- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into
- 0:06a fairly inept sports bike rider.
- 0:08Hailing from California, he collects cars and bikes built with plenty of
- 0:12cheap and fast, and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
- 0:36Good day, good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:39It's John Summers, the motoring historian.
- 0:41Um, With, uh, his, not just one school friend, but two school friends today,
- 0:47Mark Cammie and, and Deansmore Greep.
- 0:50Um, introduce yourself, gents.
- 0:54Friend was a bit strong.
- 0:56Friend was a bit strong, yeah.
- 0:57Yeah, I don't rank above an acquaintance, I don't think.
- 1:02Yeah, no, no, but, but really, uh I, I feel like in some ways this, this pod has
- 1:09been a bit disingenuous because really it was always the three of us rather than
- 1:14just the two of us, although the two of us were always more about, more about cars.
- 1:20Hence today's episode, because Greep, you spent many years
- 1:26driving vans, did you not?
- 1:29I did indeed, yeah, yeah.
- 1:32Firstly, it started off up in Worcester, working for that, um It's
- 1:36a reclamation charity that uh, was uh, set up by the guy that owned Worcester
- 1:43Warriors rugby club and um, set up Worcester Bosch, you know, the uh,
- 1:51the boiler company over here as well.
- 1:54Um, but yeah, so that job working for this charity was to drive around
- 1:59various businesses in the West Midlands and collect stuff that would otherwise
- 2:04go to landfill that we would then like, you know, Take back to the
- 2:09warehouse and sell to schools and clubs and things so they can use them
- 2:13for various bits of arts and crafts.
- 2:16So, yeah, that was my first experience of driving vans.
- 2:20They were long wheelbase Mercedes Sprinters, which were tasty bits
- 2:26of kits as far as vans goes.
- 2:28I think, Your average white van driver will go one of two ways
- 2:36with their van aspirations, I feel.
- 2:39And that'll either be like the Volkswagen Transporter, but with alloy wheels and,
- 2:46you know, chrome and blacked out mirrors round the back and all that sort of thing.
- 2:52Or, you know, the Mercedes Sprinter for your proper working man.
- 2:59But, you can do 85 in the Sprinter.
- 3:03Yes.
- 3:04Well, okay.
- 3:05So what year Sprinter are we talking about?
- 3:07Well, when I was working there, what have I been down back,
- 3:11back here, what, 11 years now?
- 3:13So yeah, like around 2010.
- 3:19Okay.
- 3:20I mean, I couldn't, couldn't say exactly, but around that sort of era, I reckon.
- 3:25And they were, they were, they were manual transmission.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:28Manual transmission.
- 3:29Five speed.
- 3:30Five speed, just beginning to bring in, um, USB ports.
- 3:38And with that 2.
- 3:407 CDI motor that normally 2.
- 3:452 I think they were but torqued up a what sorry 2.
- 3:512 liter engines, the majority of the time, I think, I don't know, good,
- 3:57good for that single rear wheel.
- 4:01Yes.
- 4:02On the sprint and.
- 4:04And, and good for that 85 or good for better than that as the gammy was
- 4:10depending on the load, obviously, but yes, what I liked about it, it was
- 4:16my first experience of having cruise control as well, you know, where you
- 4:22could like, yeah, just set the speed.
- 4:29And what I liked about that is that wouldn't slow down, but you could
- 4:32overtake, you could put your foot down.
- 4:35And release the gas pedal and it would go back to what you set your um, cruise
- 4:40speed at but yeah If you braked it would clear your cruise speed and wouldn't
- 4:46like pick up for you again after that.
- 4:49So did it have um, Did it have a column for that?
- 4:54Yes Yeah, just a little lever on the on on the uh, the steering column now I don't
- 5:00know what you found but in my experience, this is a total hobby horse of mine This
- 5:04is one of the things that I think mercedes drivers understand and non mercedes people
- 5:09don't is There's little design things that make, make Mercedes better drive.
- 5:14And I think that cruise control being on the stalk is definitely one of them.
- 5:19I did a long journey in the Mustang, um, just recently, and it has one of
- 5:22these cruise controls where you have to like switch the button on and then
- 5:26push another button to set the speed.
- 5:29And it's not the end of the world, but it means that you don't, you, you only
- 5:33use it on the freeway, whereas a Mercedes cruise control, you can use that in the
- 5:38way that you would use an old fashioned overdrive, like cruising between traffic
- 5:42lights, because you can just flick it on as easy as knocking an indicator.
- 5:47On and, on and off.
- 5:48So that's my, that's my aside on, uh, on, on indicators.
- 5:54Yeah, as long as you didn't hit the brake, it would, like, do the pick up
- 5:58for you, you know, it would accelerate for you to your set speed and everything.
- 6:03Whereas the Mercedes Sprinter fridge vans that Sainsbury's had were slow as fuck.
- 6:09They were not, and they were autos, and they were pants.
- 6:12Uh, they were, I mean, they were usable pieces of kit, but they neutered them
- 6:16so they wouldn't do any more than 55.
- 6:18Um, I mean, I had 65, 67 out of it, but I did not get into neutral.
- 6:23Then I really love what year was this?
- 6:25What year was this?
- 6:27Like teens, 20 teens.
- 6:32It would have been a teens.
- 6:34This is a teen sprinter with, with a, with a, with another diesel with that same 2.
- 6:412 diesel with the fridge and the freezer bit on the back body.
- 6:46So really bad arrow, really bad arrow.
- 6:50Yeah.
- 6:50Um, Bad handling too?
- 6:55Well, I mean, you've got a real load full of, like, refrigerated goods
- 7:00strapped in cart crates to the side of the back of the walls of the van.
- 7:03You're not exploring the limits of grip here.
- 7:05Um, so You mean you never did?
- 7:10Not really.
- 7:10I mean, like, the thing will do 55 miles an hour and handles like a small barge.
- 7:14So, you know, it's, um But you add 65 out of it by getting
- 7:18into neutral, you were saying.
- 7:21I'm not sure about it.
- 7:22I don't think I'd wanted to hit 70 just to see.
- 7:24Um, and they said, Oh, you're not allowed to do any of that
- 7:26stuff because it's GPS tracked.
- 7:28And I thought I was, uh, yeah.
- 7:30And cowed by that.
- 7:30And then after about a bit in the van, you're thinking like, Oh, fuck off who's
- 7:34checking the GPS trails for that shit.
- 7:36Unless I have an accident.
- 7:37So, uh, that then it became a personal mission to see how
- 7:40fast I can get the band to go.
- 7:43Um, I don't think I ever got 70, but as I say, after you went past
- 7:4655, it wouldn't let you accelerate.
- 7:47The accelerator just did nothing.
- 7:48Yeah.
- 7:49So you had to accelerate hard to 55 and then hit it into neutral as you were
- 7:53going down a long hill . But with it.
- 7:58But bird, lip, bird, bird would've been the dream.
- 8:01But I didn't, that wasn't in my catchment area.
- 8:03I didn't roam to bird lip in the short period.
- 8:05I worked for them in between jobs.
- 8:07Um, but, uh, yeah.
- 8:11Um, I mean, hey, on the other hand, I looked after my vans.
- 8:15I never had any van, let's say for argument's sake, burn to the ground.
- 8:20Well, it's funny because we were talking of doing this podcast, I was
- 8:26like looking back on my time driving vans because I've always considered,
- 8:30you know, in rose tinted glasses, driving the vans for as long as I did
- 8:35made me a better driver just all round.
- 8:39You know, more aware, able to jump in any vehicle and just drive it, you
- 8:45know, and the spatial awareness is much better and that sort of thing.
- 8:50And I, you know, would pat myself on my back like, ah, you know, you know,
- 8:55I really learned from that experience.
- 8:57And, um.
- 8:58Yeah, looking back, it's, well, maybe I learnt because of how many failures I had.
- 9:05And, yes, one of the ones that you, so, uh, just referenced was, I'd been asked
- 9:11by, uh, my, uh, boss at the food firm that I was working at to go and pick
- 9:17a van up from Exeter and drop one off.
- 9:20This is from Plymouth.
- 9:23Yeah, that's from Plymouth.
- 9:24So I bombed up the, uh, A38 in the M5 motorway to Exeter, picked up this fan
- 9:30that just got a brand new reconditioned engine and then started driving it
- 9:36back to, um, a sprinter again, I think.
- 9:41Um, it might have been a transport.
- 9:44Um, not the, uh, the crafter was the Volkswagen version on the same Sprinter
- 9:50platform, so it might have been one of those, but I think it was a sprinter.
- 9:53So it was a sprint if it, so the crafter, the Volkswagen crafter
- 9:58was basically a sprinter that Volkswagen made under license.
- 10:03Yes, and then, um, So it was their motor, whose motor was it?
- 10:07It was, it was the Oh right, I don't know, but Fiat and Peugeot had the
- 10:12same sort of deal with their vans.
- 10:17They were the same platform.
- 10:19I think it might be Citroen as well, given that, um, that's another French
- 10:25car company, so I think the Citroen relay Works van was on the same
- 10:31platform as the Fiat Ducato and the Peugeot, which I forget the name of it.
- 10:38Boxer driving back, driving back from extra with this, uh, sort of van with a
- 10:48brand new reconditioned diesel engine, brand new reconditioned engine, brand
- 10:55new, yes, driving along and, um, yeah, just quite happy listening to some music.
- 11:04Putin along, then a, uh, guy in a Peugeot Bippa, you know, one of those little
- 11:13vans on a car platform came bombing past me and pulled up in front of me about
- 11:18200 metres ahead of me, and he got out and he did the signal from South Park.
- 11:24You know Yeah, the team america world police, what's the signal He got out
- 11:33of his van and was running towards me going like that I was like what what
- 11:37and as soon as my foot touched the brake pedal Like literally The smoke the cab
- 11:46filled with smoke and every light on the dashboard came up I was like, oh
- 11:53right and um So, uh yeah, but yeah, so I dived out of the van and stopped
- 12:02all the traffic coming from behind and uh, yeah, and there we were half an
- 12:07hour later the um, the van was a pit of Melted tar on the road and there was like
- 12:14about it was still in the carriageway I pulled over onto the hard shoulder.
- 12:20Oh, I should say that I'd lost Yeah, I'd lost power and I'd just gone back
- 12:27past this like parking quarter of a mile sign And so I thought, clever
- 12:32old me, I'll just coast along the hard shoulder into the parking lay by.
- 12:38So I wasn't doing, like, full speed along the motorway.
- 12:44So yeah.
- 12:44Oh, okay.
- 12:45So yeah.
- 12:45So, so when you put the brakes on, the smoke came.
- 12:48I, when was the fire?
- 12:50And when did you get stopped?
- 12:51The smoke was when you were still rolling along.
- 12:53No, there was no smoke when I was rolling along.
- 12:55As far as I was aware, I'd just lost power and was just Because it was all
- 12:59in a big comet like cone behind you.
- 13:02I was just cruising, coasting, you know, freewheeling at the side of the road.
- 13:06Ah, you're on fire!
- 13:13Like a spaceship on re entry, just like Yeah, yeah.
- 13:21I'd say I dived out of the van, um, suffered a little bit of shock, uh,
- 13:26loads of bikers that I picture in my head were all Hells Angels, but probably
- 13:30weren't given that it's the, uh, the south of England, you know, they gave
- 13:34me a couple of rollies and stuff.
- 13:37And then, um, So I called work and said, called my boss and said, Howard,
- 13:42there's a problem with the van.
- 13:43And he went, Oh, what is it?
- 13:44I went, it's no longer a van.
- 13:51It's a traffic incident.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:53Well, he, he, I didn't know it was a proper traffic incident like that,
- 13:57but at the time, but then, um, he sent another driver that had just
- 14:01finished his round to come pick me up.
- 14:04He was maybe 10 miles from where I was coming from Plymouth.
- 14:10And he said that you could see the column of smoke from , the
- 14:14marsh, the marshmallows, roundabout
- 14:20And it was on the, it was, it was on the local news, like a
- 14:2410 mile tailback on the A 38
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:33So has someone just not put oil in the fucking engine or
- 14:35something as dumb as that?
- 14:36Well, officially, the story is that it was something, uh, wrong with the engine.
- 14:42Um, unofficially, I don't know if I maybe hadn't got out of fourth.
- 14:50That shouldn't set the whole thing on fire.
- 14:52But, you know, I, I have never, uh, pilloried myself too much for that
- 15:00one, cause I'm not really certain.
- 15:03Cause you know, you can drive on autopilot and say, I had just overtaken stuff
- 15:09when the power lost and I was like, I'm in fourth, but I had just overtaken.
- 15:16So.
- 15:17You know, I might not have been in four from it.
- 15:19One way or the other, that, that should not have worked.
- 15:21One plus one in those circumstances does not equal several hours in a
- 15:25lay by, you know, by a barbecued van.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30It actually reminds me of my mate Neil from university.
- 15:32He drove, he had a Ford Orion, um, and that Ford Orion suffered
- 15:37a very similar fate to your van.
- 15:39What year?
- 15:40What year?
- 15:42Pre facelift or post facelift?
- 15:44Did it have the grill?
- 15:46I don't know.
- 15:46It was pre university.
- 15:47It was like a year or two before university.
- 15:50So it would have been like, he had it.
- 15:53So it would have been like, 91, something like that.
- 15:56If it was new, I don't think it was new.
- 15:57So it would have been like mid 80s at best.
- 16:02Anyway, I remember him telling me that he was driving along and then he stopped.
- 16:06And when he stopped at the traffic lights.
- 16:08Um, smoke poured out all of the air vents, and he drove, he was like, uh
- 16:13oh, um, drove it across to round the corner and parked it up on the side of
- 16:18the road in front of a terraced street.
- 16:20Uh, and within minutes, it was a fireball, um, and the old lady that
- 16:25lived in the house there, uh, came out, and he ended up, when the fire brigade
- 16:30arrived, he was sitting on a deck chair that she brought out for him, with a
- 16:34cup of tea, having a fact to calm his nerves, um, whilst the thing was just
- 16:41destroyed in front of him, immolated, um, before him, much like you and your van.
- 16:47Yeah.
- 17:07No, I mean, you never want to say I've never rolled a car or I've never caught
- 17:11a car on fire because you kind of, you feel like you're tempting fate.
- 17:15Don't you?
- 17:16Yeah, yeah, I'm almost on uranate in Bentham since there's a dam on the museum.
- 17:23Yeah, well, I mean, another of my I wish I'd never was driven through that dry
- 17:31stone wall outside the country estate in Cornwall in, in yet another works van.
- 17:38I think this, this was a Fiat Ducato.
- 17:42And you know, I said, um, you learn from, or I learned to be a better driver.
- 17:47So this was when I stopped eating.
- 17:50When I was driving,
- 17:54yeah.
- 17:55'cause uh, I'd, uh, was reaching into my lunchbox for one of, you know, a crabs
- 17:59stick to eat whilst driving . And then lost love the way he remembers the exact
- 18:05food that he was eating at the crabs.
- 18:07Stick the cream pot and lost the crabs.
- 18:11Crabs stick in the lunchbox.
- 18:12So then, then looked down and then the road disgustingly.
- 18:21Outrageously decided to take a corner.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:27Yeah.
- 18:27And you mentioned earlier, like, um, uh, about, uh, not exploring
- 18:33the limits with your van.
- 18:35Cause it could only do well.
- 18:36I, I did explore the limits of grip with this van at that point and,
- 18:42uh, took it through those limits and through a dry stone wall.
- 18:47Which caused the tire to blow out.
- 18:51Luckily, that was what I told the boss happened.
- 18:56So, the tire caused it, rather than the grass stick.
- 18:59Yeah, so I told the truth, but just the events maybe not in the right order.
- 19:05Yeah.
- 19:32I did explore the limits of grip on a different van, the Citroen C35
- 19:36that we had at Bombard in France.
- 19:38I once took that at full speed round the Amboise Bridge right up towards
- 19:43Limeray and got the back end of that van out, only at about 25 miles an
- 19:46hour, but I was not expecting that.
- 19:48And furthermore, did you know, I know you did because I spoke to
- 19:51you about it, you can pull away a Citroen C35 van in the middle of
- 19:55tour from traffic lights in fifth.
- 19:58If you put it in fifth, rev the nuts off it and just dump the clutching kangaroo
- 20:02down the road for about 400 yards.
- 20:05Yeah.
- 20:05He's doing it.
- 20:07Robotic vehicle.
- 20:08Those C 35 vans, the thing I always remember about them was, do you remember
- 20:11on one side the thread was clockwise on the wheels, and on the other
- 20:16side the thread was anti clockwise.
- 20:19And the story went that once it had a flat tire and people had spent like ages and
- 20:25got all these poles and all this kind of stuff, only to find that they were trying
- 20:29to turn the wheel nuts the wrong way.
- 20:31And that's why they couldn't, uh, they couldn't take the wheels off them.
- 20:34So there was always, and I'd never, I mean, and it's so crazy and so French
- 20:38that, uh, that they should, uh, that they should have them like that.
- 20:42I do remember the, the five speed.
- 20:45transmission that they had.
- 20:47I remember the fact that in one and there were a couple of those C35 vans
- 20:51weren't there and I remember in one of them, if, if you were in like second,
- 20:55you could see through past the engine onto the pavement, you know, it was,
- 21:01uh, as you, as you change gear, like the boot or, or, or moved around the
- 21:06other gear lever in fifth gear, you can move it in about a foot square
- 21:12without taking it out of fifth gear.
- 21:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:17Do you remember it had, um, the other thing that I remember about
- 21:19those C 35s was they had a grey Velia speedometer with like a sweep gauge.
- 21:26I loved the sweep gauge, it was like a ribbon, and the needle did a sweep,
- 21:32did a sweep past it, because they were, they were, that Citroen was
- 21:36the same design as the contemporary, um, Fiat Ducato, if that was the,
- 21:41the name, it was an Italian, Citroen.
- 21:43It was like an Italian French combination, if you can imagine
- 21:48anything, uh Because it's kind of ridiculous, like, the UK licenses that
- 21:51we've all got entitle us to drive.
- 21:53Isn't it up to, like, three and a half ton box vans, like, with Seven and a half.
- 21:57Seven and a half, that's right.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 21:59Um, I mean I don't think that's changed.
- 22:02Yeah, yeah, well, I mean, for good reason.
- 22:03I mean, I've driven them, but it, it's You have to be pretty on your
- 22:07case with your, uh When you met with your sort of, you know, your spatial
- 22:10awareness points because when I was a lad, um, like about Ollie's age,
- 22:15like eight or nine, um, my dad rented a BRS Ford cargo, like a box truck.
- 22:24Um, we rented it with a friend or I can't remember whether he was
- 22:27driving it, but I remember it's the first time I'd ever been in a truck.
- 22:31And it was one of those where me and my dad were on like the two
- 22:34passenger seats and, and that was, and then there was this.
- 22:37Shift in the handbrake and then, you know, the, my dad's made driving
- 22:42the truck, but that was huge.
- 22:44And I couldn't believe that you could drive it on, on a car license.
- 22:47Um, I can't, it's hard to believe now that, that in America you can, you
- 22:52know, U Haul will rent somebody who just got their driving license, you know,
- 22:56driving around the block in Wisconsin, U Haul in New York will let you rent.
- 23:02A twin wheel V 10, you know, loot and top van towing a trailer on your car license.
- 23:09But, you know, I guess, uh, as you've observed many times
- 23:13before, Mark, it's about freedom.
- 23:14It is the bombard summer passes by the bombard summer in France,
- 23:21the Mercedes three Oh eight.
- 23:23Do you remember that?
- 23:24It was slow.
- 23:26And the gearbox was a bit reluctant.
- 23:27That was like an 80s Mercedes.
- 23:29One of the ones where they had, where the, the indicators did the wrap around and
- 23:33had the little, like, streaks in them.
- 23:35But that was the first van where I had that feeling of
- 23:37independence, where it was mine.
- 23:39My domain.
- 23:40I love the fact that you could have a nap in the back of it.
- 23:43You could have a pee in the back of it.
- 23:44It was like your own private, like, private space.
- 23:48Um, I also love the fact that people got out of the way, like it was the first time
- 23:52I'd ever had that white van man experience with, uh, with, with people, uh, with
- 23:59people getting out of the way now.
- 24:01Um, that's, that's definitely a thing.
- 24:03People avoiding you.
- 24:05Definitely.
- 24:05Yeah.
- 24:06Does the van need to be white?
- 24:09No, uh, a work van either plane.
- 24:15Or in blazing.
- 24:17But if you've got like alloys on and things like that, your, your
- 24:22average driver will spot that that's, you know, not a work van
- 24:26and won't treat it the same way.
- 24:29Yeah.
- 24:30Yeah.
- 24:31Um, dense.
- 24:35I've, uh, so whilst we've, uh, whilst I've, I've got you on it, let me do
- 24:40these, uh, these questions with you now.
- 24:42What of, of the vans that you drove over the, over the years that
- 24:46you were, what was the best one?
- 24:50Well, there wasn't really.
- 24:54A best one because each had depending on what you're looking for each had
- 24:59their uh, high point Uh when I was working at olympia foods When they
- 25:06got the new fit to kato in was the one that everyone wanted to fight.
- 25:11Well, yeah That must have been like 2010, something like that, I think.
- 25:19Um, but that the torque on those meant, do you know the Big Hill just outside
- 25:25of Extra where, um, the A three 80 to go down towards Tor key splits off
- 25:32from the A 38 and you go up that hill.
- 25:35Yeah.
- 25:35Holden.
- 25:35That's Holden Hill.
- 25:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:38So, um, the Fit Dato could do that with the Olympia Foods display stand.
- 25:46Stuff and, and equipment from, you know, the, the West Country Food show up that
- 25:5265 70 without needing to drop a gear,
- 25:59whereas the sprinters couldn't, but the sprinters had the USB slot and
- 26:04the, uh, the cruise control and slight, slightly comfier driving position.
- 26:11Um,
- 26:15yeah, but then and then and then the Renault master was the smallest van, but
- 26:21it had the For your reverse parking Which, when you're a delivery driver, you know,
- 26:28trying to get into tight spots down on St.
- 26:32Ives Harbour, that was definitely a bonus, having the, uh,
- 26:36the reverse parking sensors.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39Because every other van, every other van, the sensor was,
- 26:43Oh yeah, I've hit the wall.
- 26:44I feel, I feel, given we're talking about proximity driving, you, you ought to tell
- 26:48the story of your first day in the van.
- 26:50And the fact that the GPS kind of nudged you pretty hard.
- 26:55So, yes, at Olympia Foods, I'd, um, recently got the job and I'd done my,
- 27:02like, training, which was to go out with the more experienced drivers and get
- 27:07shown various runs and things like that.
- 27:10And, um, yes, and then one day, two weeks sooner than it should have been,
- 27:16Paul, the warehouse manager, said, Oh, I'm sending you to, um, Dartmouth.
- 27:20I was like, brilliant.
- 27:21Yeah, I know where Dartmouth is and of course knowing where something is
- 27:25and actually, you know, driving in and around it looking for various businesses
- 27:30are completely different matters, you know, and I now know that Dartmouth
- 27:35is actually like a boot, you know, you come down, you go along the harbor,
- 27:41come around the one way street and then out of Dartmouth and that's it.
- 27:44That's all you have to do.
- 27:45Um, but I didn't know that because it wasn't a run that I've been shown.
- 27:49So I was in a vw crafter hired not not even owned by the company hired for
- 27:55the summer Sent out into dartmouth and the south hams run which I hadn't been
- 28:03shown and I had my dad's old Sat nav which will now call forevermore shat nav
- 28:14Driving into Dartmouth, I imagine, you know, I'm driving down the car for the
- 28:20boot and what I need to do is go down to the heel and then come along the sole.
- 28:25And then I can do all the deliveries around the Harbor and then come
- 28:29back along the toe and then up along the shin of the boot, if you
- 28:32like, to get out of Dartmouth again.
- 28:34I know my sat nav decided why it's be a much better idea if you drive through
- 28:40all the little You know 17th century fishermen's village Streets and roads to
- 28:47drop you down into the harbor that way Of course, I was like, alright, yeah, Mr.
- 28:51Shatnav, I will follow what you say.
- 28:54So, I start driving down these, um, tight ass, tight ass,
- 29:00like, little, um, uh, streets.
- 29:03It's a long wheelbase, the crafter's long wheelbase.
- 29:07Uh, this one actually wasn't because it was a hire van, so it was just,
- 29:11I mean, it, it, it wasn't a short wheelbase vehicle, you know, it's still
- 29:15like, a lot, I, anyway, I was going down these like little lanes, like
- 29:21little ginnels, back lanes, whatever, I've only done about 100 meters and I
- 29:26already decided I'm not reversing out here because, you know, some of the
- 29:30corners that I've been around, I can't physically See to reverse background.
- 29:36So I was like, it's, it's forge forward, you know?
- 29:41Um, and so forward, I went and then, uh, maybe two more meters.
- 29:48I then went down some steps.
- 29:51That was a good sign on a road, I feel.
- 29:54Two or three steps on a road and then, and that's when I
- 29:59really knew I was in trouble.
- 30:00What's that meme go?
- 30:02That's when he knew he'd fucked up.
- 30:05Yeah, so, so, and I probably would have got away with the whole experience
- 30:12if there wasn't scaffolding down this street that I was driving down.
- 30:17So, bubba dubba dubba, down some steps.
- 30:20Which you don't want to do in a work van anyway, you know, like And I've
- 30:27already had to wind down the The windows to pull in the mirrors because
- 30:32the street i'm driving down so tight And then I I like get to this little
- 30:39bit and There's scaffold, a scaffold tower up on this little cottage, but
- 30:44it's not like traditional because, you know, it's a really, really tight lane.
- 30:48So it's only sticking out about a foot, the scaffold poles, but
- 30:53on the passenger side of the van.
- 30:57So I go, no worries, I line up, you know, like this, so I can like
- 31:02judge the, uh, the distance, right?
- 31:05And drive along and clear the scaffolding.
- 31:08Absolutely brilliant.
- 31:10However, the cottage on the driver's side.
- 31:13of the road about three feet up or three feet of height.
- 31:18It's stuck out about a foot from the rest of the wall.
- 31:21A little buttress.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:26And, um, so I'm driving along.
- 31:28And of course, on the sprinters, it has the slightly Toed in nose on it, make it
- 31:35look a bit more aerodynamic, which leaves just a shoulder of your tyre exposed.
- 31:42And that got caught on the bus for us.
- 31:46But, unbeknownst to me, who couldn't see that this was sticking out, I said,
- 31:51I'll floor it, get through, you know, that'll be, that'll be the answer.
- 31:54So, and, it wasn't, I did get through.
- 31:59But, um, not without incident because the, uh, the, the two steering wheels,
- 32:08um, where they call it Dagenham Dartford.
- 32:11One of them was pointing at, like, 12 and the other was
- 32:14pointing at, like, 2 o'clock.
- 32:16So, my, my, the steering wheels are like that.
- 32:24And so, I drove down, got to a, like, a little safer area where
- 32:28I, you know, could park up and, like, not block traffic and stuff.
- 32:33And then, uh, phoned the boss up saying, uh, you know, this is my first day out
- 32:38by myself and I've ruined a hire van.
- 32:41And, um,
- 32:46I don't think I'm going to have a career here very long.
- 32:50So he sent out one of the warehouse staff to come along and, um, fit a new
- 32:55tire because it had popped obviously.
- 32:58Um, and he couldn't because there was no tire fixing, tire replacement.
- 33:07Each van is supposed to have like a kit to enable you to replace a wheel.
- 33:13But the wrench, the torque wrench handle was about nine inches long.
- 33:20Whereas if you have a professional tire fitter turn up, their torque
- 33:23wrench handles are like, you know, a meter and a half long.
- 33:27So trying to untorque a Buckled wheel with the nine inch wrench handle.
- 33:33It just bent.
- 33:34So yeah, we then had to call the RAC out, but this warehouse driver, he
- 33:39couldn't get the van out of the space that I'd parked it in, in amongst
- 33:43these garages and stuff like that.
- 33:46And for me to get out to get down onto the Harbor, call the RAC
- 33:51to come and sort the wheel out.
- 33:55The boss, but they're pointing at like 12 and 2 o'clock and he
- 33:58went, just fucking do the rub.
- 33:59So, after about a five hour delay.
- 34:05Um, I got going again and then spent the whole rest of the, uh, I think I
- 34:10drove about another six hours with that van with the steering wheel constantly
- 34:15cranked over as hard as I could manage it, just to drive in a straight line.
- 34:23Oh, man.
- 34:25Oh.
- 34:29You remember, you remember I had that transit.
- 34:32For that summer in England, this is a story that, um, my, my, my
- 34:37family know, but, but, but you don't, this is just a vignette.
- 34:42Um, I, uh, was staying in hotels and when you buy a beer.
- 34:48It's not very economical, is it, to buy like individual cans.
- 34:52It makes more sense to buy a six pack and, you know, when you go from,
- 34:57there's usually a, you know, ice making machine or a fridge or something like
- 35:02that in the room you're staying in.
- 35:04So you can chill the beer in your, well anyway, long and short, I had
- 35:09a spare can of beer in my suitcase.
- 35:13Um, when I was, uh, when I had that transit and I only had a suitcase and
- 35:20I just thought at first I tried to, like, attach it to the side of the
- 35:25van, but after a bit, I was just like, because I live in San Francisco where
- 35:29there's loads of car break ins, right?
- 35:30This van had a bulkhead.
- 35:32Uh, silver Transit, it's thumb, the thumbnail of episode two or three.
- 35:37One of those, by the way, silver Transit had a bulkhead, so you, you
- 35:40had to get in to get into the back.
- 35:42You had to get out of the cab.
- 35:43Right?
- 35:44And, and so what that meant was anything that you, any valuables
- 35:47that were in the cab were visible from the, so I put my suitcase in
- 35:51the back so it wasn't visible right.
- 35:54And it slid around a bit and I was fine with it sliding around.
- 35:58Well, I thought I was, you know, anyway, long and short, I, uh, I thought I was
- 36:03fine with it, but it split a can of beer and pissed beer all over all my stuff.
- 36:10So I had all these like nice clean shirts and jeans and things for later in the
- 36:14drip and all of them were There was that there were there were rare books
- 36:19Everything is stinking now of cheap beer and I wish I'd just gone to the hotel bar
- 36:25and not been such a fucking skinflint.
- 36:30I Can't believe we've got this far through this van episode without mentioning my
- 36:37brown Ford Econoline van And, and one.
- 36:42Teddy said love Anne.
- 36:44Absolutely.
- 36:45Yeah.
- 36:45It does.
- 36:47And, and, uh, and, and just, and I would highlight just, just one story in
- 36:52particular, um, Gammy, when you stayed and there were two streets in California,
- 36:58in San Francisco that have trams on them, California street and Powell street, and
- 37:05we were driving up California street.
- 37:08And managed to get one of the wheels.
- 37:11It was raining and we managed to get one of the wheels on, on the, and I
- 37:15remember, I remember, I can't remember whether you or I were driving, but
- 37:19I do remember the wheel spinning.
- 37:21And I remember being able to see down the hill out of one
- 37:25of the side windows of the van.
- 37:28There was tiresmoke pissing past and he was like, Nyeh, nyeh, nyeh, nyeh, nyeh.
- 37:32The whole time everyone was looking.
- 37:36My other memory of that van is that I got out, I've got a video somewhere of it
- 37:40where we were, I think we'd been to see, didn't we go and see Judas Priest in it?
- 37:45Yeah, we went to see Judas Priest in San Jose.
- 37:48Yeah, with Steel Panther supporting.
- 37:51Good guess.
- 37:52Um, um, tips for free in the crowd, who knew?
- 37:56Um, but um, that's the Steel Panther effect.
- 37:59Um, but yeah, um, we went to sit, and I remember you went in to get, you
- 38:04parked in front of a no parking sign.
- 38:06And I got out to take a photo of the van in front of the no
- 38:09parking sign, which I've still got.
- 38:11I'll send it to you.
- 38:12Um, and, uh, I did a little caned video of the sort of, the motion
- 38:17control that you had on the seat.
- 38:19I, that it only had one bolt holding the seat down.
- 38:22So you could basically rock the seat around completely all over the show.
- 38:25Yeah, because Mark's dogs had chewed up the original vinyl seat.
- 38:29So I went to a pick and pull, and I got this lovely velour seat.
- 38:35They were comfortable.
- 38:36Yeah, for, it was from the Chateau, like, you know, like, shag wagon.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41Version of the econ line, and I assumed that the seat would fit.
- 38:46Notice that assumed that the seat would fit.
- 38:49It wasn't the, the, the mounting points were different sizes.
- 38:53So I, I could only mount the seat on one side, so yeah, it did, it did swing.
- 38:58But do you remember it had an armrest?
- 38:59It was that kind of purplish purplish au, wasn't it?
- 39:03Oh, it was, it was lovely.
- 39:04It was super comfortable.
- 39:05See yeah.
- 39:08Yeah, the other thing that was striking about that van was, um, it
- 39:11was owned by Stanford before me, and so it existed, it was like a 92, so it
- 39:18did sit from like 92 to 2008 without hardly any rust, because it lived
- 39:23down on the peninsula where it's dry.
- 39:25Street parking in San Francisco with all the salt air, the bump,
- 39:30the, the leading edge of the trunk just rusted off completely.
- 39:35I mean, that's how much the rust just completely attacked.
- 39:38Do you remember?
- 39:39It had that scrape down the side and that rusted and, and ran.
- 39:43The rust streaks ran down the, the, the side.
- 39:46Had moss on the window ledge as well.
- 39:48It did, yeah.
- 39:49Which didn't blow off.
- 39:50It just stayed there and, and, and kept growing.
- 39:53You know, the other thing that I remember about that Judas Priest
- 39:56night with it was that you said, as we were walking back to the car, you
- 39:59were like, you know, I get this van.
- 40:02That van is a.
- 40:03Fuck you to everybody and it really was and that was sort of why I got rid of
- 40:09it because I wanted to To not be that it was to it was just offensive whether if
- 40:15you didn't like cars It was polluting and took up a lot of parking space When you
- 40:19parked in a parking spot people used to be annoyed because it was so big It meant
- 40:24that they couldn't open their car door to get out and people didn't want this Ugly
- 40:29van next to this molestory freaking van.
- 40:32But it didn't take up eight spots like, um, The van did on Slater's Stag Do.
- 40:39What is that eight spot story?
- 40:41I don't even know that story.
- 40:42That, I actually had that on my agenda of stories to cover.
- 40:47Mainly because I don't actually know that, that story.
- 40:50That wasn't a Sherpa that you drove on Slater's Stag Do.
- 40:54It was an LDV of some sort, I think.
- 40:59I remember the photos and it was a Dually.
- 41:01It was like a Dually Sherpa.
- 41:04Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:04But it was an LDV by then, like the later It was a horrible van to drive in anyway.
- 41:10Like, the driver and the passenger in the front seats sat right on the engine.
- 41:16And so all the hot air just comes up through the floor
- 41:19and just, yeah, chokes you.
- 41:22So I wouldn't ever Get one of those vans or drive one of those vans again, but
- 41:27yes, it was on the stag and uh, everybody got tanked up whilst I was driving along
- 41:32and it was decided to stop at a motorway services to uh, for sustenance like
- 41:40ginsters pasties and such like, yeah.
- 41:43Marvellous.
- 41:44Such high class delicacies, yeah.
- 41:48Yeah, yeah.
- 41:49So we pull into the parking area.
- 41:52It's not very busy.
- 41:55What is it, about six o'clock in the afternoon, something like
- 41:58that, on a Sunday or something?
- 42:00And, uh, I just, just to get into the spirit of things, because I wasn't
- 42:04drinking and everybody else was, I was like, right, watch this lads, and just,
- 42:08I, I pulled up on eight parking spots.
- 42:12So the van was four parking spots long A crossway and so
- 42:19yeah, and I just did a crossways.
- 42:21So I was taking up Eight spot on the gap between the two rows of space.
- 42:25Yeah, because I wasn't in the van I was driving in a different car.
- 42:28I remember arriving and seeing me parked in eight spaces Uh, what was the worst
- 42:38van you drove great that one Yeah, what was the fastest van you drove?
- 42:47The, um, the Ford, uh, transit turbos that the plumbing firm used to have.
- 42:56What, what year transit is that?
- 42:58I mean, that was when I worked at the, uh, PSS Midlands.
- 43:01So, we're talking 2000, 2002, something like that, maybe?
- 43:08All right!
- 43:10All right, but the Ford's like at the uh, the food firm Howard never would
- 43:16never buy the Ford's because they were more expensive to get than the Mercedes
- 43:23because your entry level transit had more bells and whistles and bigger engine and
- 43:28that sort of thing than the the Sprinter.
- 43:33Interesting.
- 43:35How many miles were you doing when you were van driving like that all the time?
- 43:39How many miles a year were you doing?
- 43:43A year, I don't know, but I could do Um, 1250 in a week.
- 43:50Two 50 a day.
- 43:55Yeah.
- 43:56So I'm not gonna try and do the maths on that, but Yeah.
- 43:5960,000.
- 44:00Yeah, that, yeah.
- 44:0160.
- 44:02Yeah, that is, and that's on lanes in Devon and Cornwall, isn't it?
- 44:05That's no highway miles at all.
- 44:07Uh, going to your delivery area and coming back was obviously on main roads, but then
- 44:13the rest of the time you are driving down.
- 44:16Cobble streets and to beaches and, um, across fields and things like that,
- 44:22you know, gated communities down in Cornwall that you have to radio in like,
- 44:28uh, and they'll like open the gate and then you drive a mile over a field to
- 44:34deliver to some, some hippie, um, cafe that only serves people on, that are
- 44:40walking on the coastal path out of their kitchen window, sort of crap, you know.
- 44:46Huh.
- 44:46Toils out the serpent unwashed Buried beneath your body Deep in
- 44:55the heart of the dead Spirit is black to the end People get real
- 45:08parochial about fucking bands as well.
- 45:10I mean, the amount of time I remember I was driving, like,
- 45:13somewhere around in Redding.
- 45:15No, was it Redding?
- 45:16No, it would have been Newbury.
- 45:17And I, I went up this street and I was like, oh bugger,
- 45:20I'm gonna have to turn around.
- 45:21And there was a double paved drive, like, really like two and a half drives
- 45:26wide, like, and I thought, so I, I, like, checked, no problem, reversed
- 45:32into it, only about half onto it, just enough so I could turn around
- 45:35in the road and head down the street.
- 45:37Um, guy and his wife, out of the house, running down the street after
- 45:43me, screaming at the top of his lungs.
- 45:46I stopped and was like.
- 45:47Is everything all right, mate?
- 45:48I thought I'd run over his cat or something, you know what I mean, it
- 45:50was like that, it was that sort of, you know, absolute apoplectic rage, um,
- 45:56and he just ranted at me, and I won't bore you with it, other than to say, he
- 46:01basically affronted that I'd used his drive to turn round on, that was it.
- 46:05Yeah, yeah, I know, I've turned round in driveways where they've hung on
- 46:09chains, like across the mouth of the driveway, like, please do not turn here.
- 46:15I always make a point of touching the nose of the car on that sign when I turn.
- 46:20Well, I mean, I don't think we engaged in, endeared ourselves to
- 46:23the neighbours, because didn't you, you used to do that, that geyser
- 46:25across the way in Harcourt Drive?
- 46:27Remember we used to drive into his drive, and turn around after he came out, and
- 46:31he'd look out the window every day.
- 46:32LAUGHTER We'd wave.
- 46:38And I'd have Jason just looking.
- 46:41Was it, was it Harcourt Drive, the one where we tore up?
- 46:46There was like a grass verge, and we, we had shitty cars in front of the house.
- 46:51Yeah.
- 46:52And the landlord didn't consider it, they used the garage.
- 46:55And so we had to park our drive in shit.
- 46:57We didn't know, when we rented the house, we didn't know we couldn't use the garage.
- 47:01I was like, this is perfect, we've got a garage and a drive for two cars.
- 47:04We can get stuff in there and work in the garage.
- 47:06It was only after we moved in, they were like, fuck you, can't use the garage.
- 47:10I, I didn't realize that, um, but do you remember that was when we
- 47:13had that alpha 33 on the lawn?
- 47:17Yeah, the neighbors hated us pretty quickly, um, after we moved in with
- 47:21our detritus of cars that never moved anywhere, and we didn't mow the back lawn.
- 47:27Hippies use, hippies use the rear entrance.
- 47:33Yeah, the mowing of the back lawn, I remember having my leather coat
- 47:36on backwards and going at it with Slater's two stroke streamer, like
- 47:41I would play it like it was some kind of jungle in suburban Reading.
- 47:48Well, you remember the neighbours were good mates with the landlord,
- 47:50so they rang up and grassed us up.
- 47:51Oh, I don't remember that, no.
- 47:53Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's why that biatch of us in estate agent rang us up and
- 47:56was strobing us, because the neighbours had rung the landlord, who'd rung them,
- 48:01who didn't know anything about it, and had rung us to rant at us, and we were
- 48:04like, well, we'll get the garden cut before we move out, what's the deal?
- 48:08They were like, you've gotta cover out of the grass.
- 48:11We were like, oh, it's like kneehigh now.
- 48:13I mean, it's like a meadow . Yeah.
- 48:15I remember you saying, I remember you saying that it needed to be done
- 48:18and me agreeing that it needed to be done and not doing it, and you
- 48:22being like, mate, it's gotta be done.
- 48:23And me feeling an ass for not doing it more promptly.
- 48:27Um, I do remember that.
- 48:29Well, it wouldn't have been an issue if it wasn't for the snitch neighbours.
- 48:33Well, looking back, it was out of order that it was a nice suburban house.
- 48:37And I remember some of it being above my head.
- 48:41And this was like the back garden.
- 48:42Yeah, it I mean, in these days, we just put up a little sign calling
- 48:47it an eco grove or something and Lloyd get win an award, get
- 48:50rewilding, win an award or something.
- 48:54A Titchmar should be down there doing a documentary about it, past the
- 48:58rusting Sierra and behind the Capri.
- 49:02Well, both of those would be super collectible and
- 49:04valuable now, wouldn't they?
- 49:06Yeah.
- 49:06I mean, a bloke, do you remember a bloke knocked on the door of that
- 49:08house to try and buy that Capri off?
- 49:11Me.
- 49:11I, you know, you shoulda, well, I fucking should have, shouldn't I?
- 49:14Because it probably would've lived on and now, uh, and now
- 49:18it's, it's gone to the DVLA.
- 49:20In the, uh, in, in the sky whilst we pivoted onto cars, um, uh, GRIP, you run
- 49:28that Corsa VXR in that rather lurid blue.
- 49:33How is it treating you?
- 49:35Yeah, I do.
- 49:37Well, having been driving it quite a lot just recently, cause I'm back in
- 49:42the office say about 50 percent of the time it's been treating me well.
- 49:47It is, uh, it's a.
- 49:49It's a lovely little car to drive.
- 49:52Punchy.
- 49:53All the poker that I'll ever need.
- 49:55Um, couple of decent corners both to and from work where you can like, you
- 50:01know, properly power through them.
- 50:04Exit speed.
- 50:07When you join the A 38 from, uh, Lee Mill.
- 50:12Yeah.
- 50:12You know, you come in under the bridge and then the Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:15Oh, and then up the on ramp.
- 50:16Yeah.
- 50:16Yeah.
- 50:17Yeah.
- 50:17That's a good corner that, that corner.
- 50:19We all know this bit of road really well.
- 50:24Yeah.
- 50:24That is a good bit of road.
- 50:25Yeah.
- 50:25Go on in.
- 50:27Well, and then the same coming off if you get and saying, yeah, yeah.
- 50:30Okay, cool.
- 50:30Yeah.
- 50:30If you get the traffic lights coming up, marshal, you've got
- 50:33the on-ramp up there as well.
- 50:36Yeah, if you get fortunate with it, you need to be late
- 50:38into the first one, don't you?
- 50:39So it's gone green for the next two, yeah.
- 50:45That, that climb up Marsh Mill, um, one of my, uh, salient teenage memories
- 50:52is, is doing that in, um, Remember Muir's girlfriend, Andrew Muir, his
- 50:58girlfriend, her dad had a used car lot and he had a brown Mitsubishi Starion
- 51:08off that lot one time.
- 51:10And I remember that was the first time I did more than 120 miles
- 51:13an hour in a car up Marshmills.
- 51:15Because it was, it was off the roundabout and Muir just launched
- 51:18it and I was like, fucking hell, I'd never been in a car that pulled past
- 51:22100 miles an hour like that before.
- 51:24It was a, it was a life changing.
- 51:28A life changing moment for me.
- 51:29Um, Mark, that M2, how's it treating you now?
- 51:34There, there was, we did, uh, I haven't touched it, to be honest.
- 51:38It's, it's my project for, I've got a bunch of stuff on car related
- 51:42issues I'm working on this week.
- 51:43So the batteries flatten it, because obviously with Angie's
- 51:46illnesses and stuff, I basically didn't drive it anywhere.
- 51:48So it's, um, uh, it's batteries flattening, it needs an MOT.
- 51:52So that's happening like as soon as they can book it in.
- 51:55Um, I needed to get.
- 51:56A new battery in the Zed and get the Zed running to get that out of the way
- 52:01to get it into the garage to charge it.
- 52:03Um, so that's how, that, which has now happened.
- 52:05The Zed lives again, which is great to, it was nice to hear it finally.
- 52:09I put this, I put the battery in it and it just went, no.
- 52:12I thought bollocks and I thought on set.
- 52:14I bought that battery like a few months ago, so I whacked it on
- 52:17charge and the next morning it was like, oh, yeah, yeah, no problem.
- 52:19Straight up.
- 52:20So, um, so yeah, so I'm gonna do some work on the z uh, just some fairly basic stuff.
- 52:25I've gotta get the, um, that under tray thing ordered from Nissan.
- 52:28Um, and there's a, I looked under the bonnet.
- 52:31There's loads of like, bolts on there that are just like little stubby,
- 52:34sort of like nut and washer bolts.
- 52:37That one piece jobs, they're all rusted and they look awful and they're
- 52:40all rusted and they're like nothing.
- 52:41So I'm just going to buy a load of those and get that replaced whilst I'm
- 52:44doing some other bits and bobs to it.
- 52:45But now the M2 is going to get fixed or I'm going to flog it
- 52:48because I'm not enjoying it.
- 52:49Um, and uh, then I'm getting the CBR fixed up as well because that just
- 52:56needs a, I've got a battery for that and MOT and I can start using that again.
- 53:00So, um, yeah.
- 53:03We, I will report back next, next pod on how we got on with it and
- 53:06how well BMW have serviced me with my extended warranty, whether
- 53:10they've actually fixed the thing.
- 53:11Yeah, I think, um, I do think I do feel bad for you with that
- 53:15M2 with the juddery brakes.
- 53:17That's the thing that's stuck in my mind from you moaning in the other pod.
- 53:22Well, that's the major structural problem that ruins the driving experience.
- 53:25There's loads of other tinkery issues that don't work on it that have just
- 53:29been a bottle of cake, but they'll, I'm sure they'll fix all those.
- 53:33It's will they fix the big one?
- 53:34So we'll see.
- 53:35Yeah.
- 53:36Yeah.
- 53:37Um, I'm jumping around here, Greek, but I watch these like used car channel guys,
- 53:43and they're always like, Oh, of course.
- 53:45They're timing chain.
- 53:47So is that, I mean, does it.
- 53:50How many miles does yours have on it now?
- 53:53Uh, coming up on 35.
- 53:57Oh, alright, yeah.
- 53:58Alright, yeah.
- 54:01Yeah.
- 54:01Because apparently the timing chains stretch and rattle.
- 54:05And I guess I have some empathy with you because that also happens on Suzuki GSXRs.
- 54:10And, uh I have a bike like a fairly high mile one that recently had some work
- 54:15done to it and the idea was it fixed that and it's as rattly now as it was before
- 54:20and you're like, well, that's marvelous.
- 54:22I spent thousands of dollars to get exactly the same thing
- 54:25as I, uh, as I had before.
- 54:27When I put my foot down in the, uh, the Corsa, it still gives me the, uh, the
- 54:32goose pumps that it did on the test drive.
- 54:36Which is why I bought it.
- 54:37I mean, prior to the test drive, I was, which ST am I going to have?
- 54:44Am I going to have, you know, go back to, um, I focus ST,
- 54:49you know, the, uh, the old 2.
- 54:505 cause I, um, I'd found a fairly decent, I think it was nine grand
- 54:57one up in Tavistock, but I drove it and it just felt floaty and heavy.
- 55:05Yeah, it had the, the good noise, the 2.
- 55:085 turbo engine and you know, when the, uh, when it dumped, it gives you a
- 55:13little semi every time, you know, um, and then I drove, um, Angie's not, not
- 55:21Angie's one, but the, the, um, Fiesta ST, and that felt tighter and, oh, and
- 55:27Dana's got one or you've got one as well, but I did enjoy that, but then
- 55:32when I got in the, the Corsa, so yeah.
- 55:34It just felt tighter.
- 55:36It felt more like a, um, a racehorse that you're like, it's on, it's
- 55:43on the bridle sort of thing, but it's all pumped up and ready to go.
- 55:47Alrighty,
- 56:10we've talked for over an hour now, so, uh, I'm going to go under the quick fire.
- 56:15Phase now, but but before I do that you you probably you're probably aware
- 56:20I break up episodes now when we pivot from one topic to another or when I do a
- 56:24choppy edit I break it up with a little a little bit of heavy metal I was gonna
- 56:31do only Slayer for for this episode Um, I don't need to explain to you boys.
- 56:38Why only Slayer?
- 56:40What I was going to suggest was What little clip should I use?
- 56:46I tend to use like 30 seconds.
- 56:48Um, what little clips when I say, you know, if you were going to
- 56:52theme this episode with a break up section, with a few little bits of
- 56:56Slayer, what little bits of Slayer would you boys be thinking of?
- 57:02Uh, the intro to Die by the Sword?
- 57:07Yeah.
- 57:08That's the one where it's in one ear and then the other ear and stuff, isn't it?
- 57:12No, I think that's behind the crooked cross.
- 57:13Is it?
- 57:14Okay, that one then.
- 57:15Yeah.
- 57:15That one then.
- 57:16Alright, yeah.
- 57:19Uh, what's the one that
- 57:24south of heaven?
- 57:26Yeah.
- 57:26Before you see the light, you must die.
- 57:31Yeah.
- 57:31That's it.
- 57:32Yeah.
- 57:53See?
- 58:04All right, well, that's, uh, I'll definitely, uh, be able
- 58:08to use, you, you use that bit.
- 58:10All right.
- 58:11Um, quick fire.
- 58:13My first car, that orange Cortina that I had, what's your primary memory of it?
- 58:18It had a 9.
- 58:191 liter engine.
- 58:21Definitely 9.
- 58:221.
- 58:23Yeah.
- 58:25So I guess the car was a 1.
- 58:276.
- 58:28But the badge kept falling off because the trunk lid, the boot lid had got rusty.
- 58:34So the badge where it said Cortina 1.
- 58:376, it rusted and fell off.
- 58:39So it had been stuck on with sellotape and it kept on falling, whatever.
- 58:42One time my dad suggested that I file the top of the 1 off and then matte black the
- 58:49rest of it because the badge was all black and then stick it on the wrong way up.
- 58:53So it said Cortina 9.
- 58:551.
- 59:00Can I just say I know you're on your quick fire round, but um, can
- 59:03you beat this as a first car story?
- 59:06My first car was a voxel cavalier sri.
- 59:09Do you remember this that I bought off?
- 59:12Jackie and then sold to gav I, I, I do, but it didn't work.
- 59:17There we go.
- 59:17It didn't work.
- 59:18No, no, I never drove it.
- 59:20Couldn't drive it.
- 59:21Bought it for 50 quid and sold it for Gav for, I think, 200.
- 59:25Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
- 59:28Cha ching!
- 59:29Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
- 59:32I didn't know it was an SRI.
- 59:34What color was it?
- 59:34Yeah, yeah.
- 59:35White.
- 59:37Yeah, yeah.
- 59:37White.
- 59:37I remember it being parked at the back.
- 59:38Didn't it like have a window that wouldn't go up or something?
- 59:42No, that was the um Was it 209?
- 59:45309 that I had.
- 59:48They were just randomly lower the window.
- 59:50You went Peugeot 309?
- 59:53Yeah, that was what I used to come down to visit you guys in
- 59:56when I first passed my test.
- 59:59Wasn't it red?
- 1:00:00Yeah.
- 1:00:01Yeah.
- 1:00:02Really?
- 1:00:03What motor did it have?
- 1:00:07An internal combustion engine.
- 1:00:13Didn't they have like a 1.
- 1:00:155 or something?
- 1:00:16Yeah, it wasn't.
- 1:00:20All right, next quick fire.
- 1:00:22What's your most recent moment?
- 1:00:25How am I going first?
- 1:00:26Yeah, the most recent one for me.
- 1:00:28When I went to get this K5 serviced with, with John, he was going to put
- 1:00:34lower clip ons on it, he was going to take the factory exhaust off and put the
- 1:00:38Remus one on and, and I was worried it was going to spoil the bike's character.
- 1:00:43It was going to, you know, make it.
- 1:00:45more like the other jigsaws that are too hardcore for me
- 1:00:48to feel comfortable riding.
- 1:00:49And, and, you know, I was worried it was going to spoil its, its character.
- 1:00:53So I thought, but, but it needed the valves adjusting, you know, it needed
- 1:00:57to service, it needed care and feeding.
- 1:01:00So it was, you know, it was going to go under the knife and I was worried his
- 1:01:03character was going to change afterwards.
- 1:01:05Um, so I went out for a little ride and did.
- 1:01:08Something that I've, I've not done for a long time, which is really
- 1:01:14open the throttle on it properly.
- 1:01:16And I guess because of the seasons here, you know, when it rains, you
- 1:01:21know, the sun bakes the tarmac and makes it all melt and get all bubbly.
- 1:01:26And then it rains and the people drive over either way.
- 1:01:28The surface of the roads have these sort of quite often quite large potholes.
- 1:01:33They might be like an inch deep But, you know, with a quite a rough edge on it,
- 1:01:38either way, the kind of pothole, which would have you off on a sports bike at
- 1:01:44the kind of speed that I was doing and going in between seeing two of these
- 1:01:48potholes and being like, Oh, that foot wide area in between them will be fine.
- 1:01:54And going in between them at a significant rate of speed.
- 1:01:59That was the most recent time where I was like, you know, it wasn't
- 1:02:01really a, like a sphincter clencher.
- 1:02:03It was more of a.
- 1:02:05Uh, I'm too old to to be doing this and riding in this kind of way and
- 1:02:10having to make those kind of decisions.
- 1:02:13So that's my so my mine is just harking back to what we're saying.
- 1:02:18You know, the entry onto the 38 from Marshmills roundabout, um, you're
- 1:02:23coming up the hill to join the main road, and it's only when you're
- 1:02:28about two thirds, three quarters of the way up that you can see.
- 1:02:32If there's any platform on the lanes.
- 1:02:35Because it's above you, yeah.
- 1:02:37And there's always that moment when you get there, and there's like some
- 1:02:40sort of like, 18 wheeler juggernaut.
- 1:02:43On the inside lane and he's going to come across you, but he's 200
- 1:02:47meters ahead of you, and you've only got 400 meters of the road left.
- 1:02:50What are you going to do?
- 1:02:51Ah, floor it, of course.
- 1:02:53Yeah.
- 1:02:54And the, the responsiveness of your 200 horses, um, VXR means that you swiftly
- 1:03:01undertake that, um, uh, 18 wheeling before it can come across your lane.
- 1:03:08And leaving all the other twats behind you that are coming
- 1:03:10up, struggling up the hill.
- 1:03:14My reason, my only, I haven't had any particular issues recently other
- 1:03:17than that the, uh, uh, on, on the Fiesta ST, the, uh, throttle body
- 1:03:22split when we were driving for a weekend away really annoyed me.
- 1:03:24We were going out to watch something at Stratford on, on the, uh, um,
- 1:03:28and I didn't get to see the play because I basically, it's this
- 1:03:30side going, um, um, um, um, idle.
- 1:03:34Um, and then randomly would because it wasn't holding a steady revs when you
- 1:03:40were driving along, it would just go after a bit, the fuel injection chip,
- 1:03:45which is an engine management chip, would just get confused and go, ah, and
- 1:03:48stop sending anything to the, to the, so you, you just have to coast to a stop
- 1:03:52and then pull up, turn it off, turn it back on again, and then as long as you
- 1:03:56could then get going, but with this constant fluttering accelerator and stuff.
- 1:04:01Yeah, because you're getting way too much air, wasn't it?
- 1:04:05Fuel mix at all.
- 1:04:06So I had to drive that back from basically about two thirds of the way to Stratford
- 1:04:11and it did occur to me if it had been Well, any of you, me and either of you
- 1:04:17going to that night out in Stratford, we would have made the theatre and gone and
- 1:04:21watched the show and just gone, meh, you know, very much in the, you know, writing
- 1:04:26on a piece of cardboard on the field, Ford Sierra out the back of Hammersmith Apollo.
- 1:04:30That car has broken down.
- 1:04:32I'm fetching assistance.
- 1:04:33Please do not tow.
- 1:04:34And then going in CDO, um, having gone at 55 down the hard shoulder
- 1:04:40through a massive traffic jam in the rain because the car was overheating.
- 1:04:43Uh, we would have just gone for it.
- 1:04:46It would have meant driving through the middle of Stratford.
- 1:04:48And you know what a nudgery little ass monkey the middle of Stratford is?
- 1:04:51Because the hotel was right opposite the fucking theatre.
- 1:04:53Um, it would have just been like, it would have been constantly going,
- 1:04:56Ram, Ram, Ram, like sounding like the worst kind of boy racer, Bevan.
- 1:05:00Every time he stopped.
- 1:05:03Every time he put up with the fucking And then, you know, the only thing
- 1:05:07you could do, was just turn it off.
- 1:05:08Then of course you're constantly having to get going again and turning back on it.
- 1:05:13Now these days, actually, you sort of sound like you're being eco,
- 1:05:16and having a, you know, a lot of cars do that stop start, rather
- 1:05:20than just you're driving a piece of shit and fucking do what it's told.
- 1:05:25So no, as it was, we came home instead, claimed on travel insurance.
- 1:05:28That um, D.
- 1:05:29O.
- 1:05:29night, well I remember about that D.
- 1:05:31O.
- 1:05:31night, apart from the fact that that was, I saw D.
- 1:05:33O.
- 1:05:34in San Francisco, but that night in London he was much, much better.
- 1:05:38We stayed, Ollie and I, Stay just near like with the family.
- 1:05:43Um, I, last summer when we were in, uh, in England, we stayed just near there.
- 1:05:48And the first night we were staying Dana had to work on Olly and I like
- 1:05:51strolled, we like strolled around and looked all around and I was
- 1:05:55like, Whoa, this was where I saw Dio.
- 1:05:58Um, do you remember when we came out, we bought water, drank the water, peed in
- 1:06:05the bottles and then poured it into the.
- 1:06:07radiator.
- 1:06:08I remember doing that.
- 1:06:10That's the only time I've ever literally put, put P in.
- 1:06:14The other thing I remember about that was it overheating and us being like,
- 1:06:17what the fuck are we going to do?
- 1:06:18Let's just like get over on the hard shoulder.
- 1:06:21And then we were like heater on windows down.
- 1:06:23Do you remember?
- 1:06:23It was like a rainy night and we drove up the hard shoulder with the B flashes on.
- 1:06:27And then if you got to the front The police were like, the road's open.
- 1:06:30And you were like, top stuff, drop to third and accelerate
- 1:06:34away, kind of thing, wasn't it?
- 1:06:37We were getting such evil stares from all the poor fuckers in the traffic
- 1:06:40as we just drove up the hard shoulder.
- 1:06:42Alright, um.
- 1:06:45That's Ford's.
- 1:06:45Bash it on the heater, full max, vents on, don't know why it works.
- 1:06:50Oh, no, the reason, the reason it works is that the, uh, um, the water
- 1:06:58normally goes engine to radiator, engine to radiator, engine to radiator.
- 1:07:03If you turn the heater on, it goes engine to radiator to heater
- 1:07:07matrix to engine to radiator.
- 1:07:09So it has a longer journey.
- 1:07:12Oh, so it's just taking more energy out of it before it goes back in.
- 1:07:15Oh, I got you.
- 1:07:17Uh, we mentioned your Cavalier SRI there, um, Greig.
- 1:07:22Was that the cheapest car you ever bought?
- 1:07:23That's my next question.
- 1:07:24Cheapest car you ever bought?
- 1:07:26It was.
- 1:07:27Yeah.
- 1:07:29It's 30 quid.
- 1:07:29Cavalier SRI.
- 1:07:3030 quid.
- 1:07:3150 quid.
- 1:07:3350 quid, yeah.
- 1:07:37Uh, I think the cheapest vehicle I've ever bought.
- 1:07:40Was that Honda Cub 90 that I think I bought for 190 quid.
- 1:07:47You don't even try and I paid 20 for that Kawasaki KZ that I, I bought.
- 1:07:52Um, dens.
- 1:07:56NFL or Premiership?
- 1:07:57NFL.
- 1:08:01Alright.
- 1:08:02Easily.
- 1:08:03It's the I'm not even asking you why, because I know it's NFL.
- 1:08:07It's the greatest team sport on the planet, full stop.
- 1:08:12Best movie car?
- 1:08:17Mad Max Ford Falcon.
- 1:08:20Yeah, there's a lot you can be saying for that.
- 1:08:22Only because I've been recently liking him, I'll go with that Ronin SA.
- 1:08:28Alright.
- 1:08:28After he ported it, invented it, and tweaked it and stuff.
- 1:08:32That'd be good to get.
- 1:08:33Or is it the Sucks 6000 from Robocop?
- 1:08:37Awww, it's still got the factory sticker on it!
- 1:08:42Yes!
- 1:08:43I'd buy that for a dollar.
- 1:08:446000 SUX.
- 1:08:51Favorite car of the moment?
- 1:08:56Uh, I wanna have a go in one of those, um, Yaris GRs.
- 1:09:02We don't get the Corona GRs over.
- 1:09:04I'd be interested.
- 1:09:04We don't get them here.
- 1:09:05I'd be interested in that, but you get them in the U.
- 1:09:07S.
- 1:09:07We don't get them, but like that, that is a cool looking piece, piece of kit.
- 1:09:11That Jerry Harris GR 300 horsepower in a fucking titchy
- 1:09:14ass proper homologation special.
- 1:09:17I know my mate's Tesla and I know it was my first experience of an electric car.
- 1:09:24And I just, um, it's pretty.
- 1:09:28Fucking far removed from the old definition of a car, but the performance
- 1:09:36that it could deliver was just on a level beyond anything that I'd driven in, you
- 1:09:43know, you know, when we sat in the ring taxi and that guy bond us round and like,
- 1:09:49we were like, fuck, this is like, you know, he's doing stuff we would never do.
- 1:09:53That's what the sort of step up to the Tesla.
- 1:09:57Felt like yeah, I mean I didn't like the whole rest of it like the the
- 1:10:02screen and it like telling you when you're like Not in the middle of the
- 1:10:06lane and all that crap like fuck off.
- 1:10:08I'm driving Yeah, they they are I say to people now because I had a clash with a
- 1:10:14student about five years ago where I'd said look They're just not cars to me.
- 1:10:19Tesla's are just not cars It's,
- 1:10:27it's, and I, and so in other words, at that time, I hadn't yet come to
- 1:10:31terms with just how revolutionary they were in terms of moving up, moving
- 1:10:35forward with how we define the car.
- 1:10:39What I think, what's been interesting for me is, is, um.
- 1:10:43With Tesla, the way they sort of were revolutionary and have since then
- 1:10:48have just done things like improve the build quality and tweak and improve and
- 1:10:52tweak and improve and where once they were, you know, like Ikea furniture
- 1:10:57next to a Porsche now they're in the same breath as, uh, as a Porsche.
- 1:11:05Don't you think, are you excited by any, like there's, I mean, electric hot
- 1:11:10hatches coming out now, isn't there?
- 1:11:11I do like that idea.
- 1:11:17Yeah, I saw that Renault one, that Alpine that's like the Renault
- 1:11:215 Turbo, I saw some stuff about that, we talked about that on this
- 1:11:25pod, that is an interesting car.
- 1:11:28I was going to say, my favorite, my favorite vehicle at the moment, I
- 1:11:31didn't have one when I asked you the question, and, but there is something
- 1:11:35that's popped into my mind, it's led me to be surfing on, online,
- 1:11:40these, these particular vehicles.
- 1:11:42I like this BMW CE 04 scooter.
- 1:11:47This BMW electric scooter is the first electric vehicle.
- 1:11:51I've looked down for that's bloody cool.
- 1:11:55And the driver is that around the city.
- 1:11:59Um, there's these, there's these Neo mopeds that you
- 1:12:02can rent as part of, of, um.
- 1:12:06Oh, I can't remember the name of the service now, but whatever.
- 1:12:09It's like scooter rental and they limit them.
- 1:12:11They're neo scooters.
- 1:12:11They limit them to 30 miles an hour.
- 1:12:13They're great fun for around town.
- 1:12:15It's a really good idea that, that, uh, um, to, to do these kinds of things,
- 1:12:20but 30 miles an hour is too slow.
- 1:12:22These are less.
- 1:12:22So I was looking for some cheapy little electric thing
- 1:12:26that could do 50 miles an hour.
- 1:12:27I feel like 50 miles an hour is the 50 miles an hour.
- 1:12:30And you can park easily.
- 1:12:32That seems to me to, to, to be the, the sweet spot, but those
- 1:12:35machines all seem to be about sort of 2, 000 the BMWs more than that.
- 1:12:40It's like 4, 000, but, um, I saw them when we were on holiday in Paris last summer.
- 1:12:46Um, I, I'm really interested in a moped environment, 13, 000.
- 1:12:55Oh, have I missed, looked at the price?
- 1:12:57Was it, uh, no, it's 4.
- 1:12:59I mean, I, I, I, I, I, I always thought, oh, I'll just look it up whilst we're
- 1:13:02chatting because I couldn't picture it.
- 1:13:04And I thought, oh, I have seen a picture of that.
- 1:13:05And at the top of the page, I'm on the BMW CEO for 12, 000, from 12, 850.
- 1:13:11Ah, they're not as expensive as that here, but they're still pretty expensive.
- 1:13:14They're still more expensive than I'm, than I'm going to be spending on one.
- 1:13:17I'm just saying I'm quite fascinated by them.
- 1:13:19If money was no object.
- 1:13:20Oh, look, I like the avant garde looks on them.
- 1:13:22Yeah, that's what I love.
- 1:13:23It's like you were talking about that suitcase one, Ganny, that suitcase
- 1:13:27moped that looks like a suitcase.
- 1:13:29I like that as well, but that's one of the ones that's limited to 30
- 1:13:32miles an hour, which is all right.
- 1:13:33If you've, if you've like popped out of the tube and you just
- 1:13:37need to go somewhere, that's.
- 1:13:39But but for me getting around suburbia on but you need 50 miles an hour and I'm
- 1:13:43ready to do I'm ready to do two wheels on city streets More than on a dual
- 1:13:49carriageway because the speeds are too high on a on a dual carriageway on city
- 1:13:53streets The speeds are kind of lower and I know san francisco and that's
- 1:13:57that's a a use case that I feel like I could I could use um tesla rosser or gt3
- 1:14:09Yeah, I probably would take the GT3 as well.
- 1:14:12Um, I'm really not sure.
- 1:14:18Um, on that note, gents, thanks very much for your time.
- 1:14:25Thank you.
- 1:14:27Pleasure.
