- 0:08Speaker 1: Scoop is back two days in a row for Scoop,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Little Scoop. We'd like to call him and Fox Fox
- 0:13Speaker 1: one little Scoop. Ken Rosenthal's here, KP. What do you
- 0:16Speaker 1: got for us today, Little Scoop?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Uh? Never heard him better? Never heard him better? You're muted? Ken, No,
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Oh, I couldn't hear you hear me A J I
- 0:31Speaker 1: do Now that wasn't muted. So I have nothing for you.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You have no Scoop, you have no scoop.
- 0:39Speaker 1: A what do you, Dick Castianos? We have to ask
- 0:41Speaker 1: you questions out and give us answers. That's not like
- 0:43Speaker 1: you can at all. All right, all right, Speaking of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Padres and Nick Casianos, what does the Padres sale
- 0:50Speaker 1: takeover mean for not only the Padres.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But for for the rest of baseball.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Well, it's supposed to become official on Monday, that's when
- 0:57Speaker 3: the owners vote on it. And I'm not sure what
- 1:00Speaker 3: it means for the operation of the team. Now, we
- 1:03Speaker 3: did see them take on at the deadline with miz
- 1:06Speaker 3: and Robbie Ray almost five million in salary, So it
- 1:09Speaker 3: seems that to some extent the financial restrictions that the
- 1:13Speaker 3: Baseball operation staff have been under for the last couple
- 1:15Speaker 3: of years. With the ownership kind of in question, it
- 1:19Speaker 3: seems they've been listed to some extent. Now, how far
- 1:22Speaker 3: they go in the future, that is a question that
- 1:25Speaker 3: we're probably not going to get the answer to, and
- 1:27Speaker 3: it will only be told by the actions now. As
- 1:31Speaker 3: for what it means for the sport, it's clearly a
- 1:33Speaker 3: healthy number for a team that I don't know, ten
- 1:37Speaker 3: years ago, before Peter Sidler bought them, was considered small market,
- 1:41Speaker 3: not all that much of a factor in the sport.
- 1:46Speaker 3: They transform themselves into a factor in the sport with
- 1:50Speaker 3: the way they spent, and they made the team relevant.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Not every move has worked out. We all know that
- 1:55Speaker 3: they still don't want a World Series. We know that,
- 1:57Speaker 3: but for years now they've been competitive. They been packing
- 2:00Speaker 3: that ballpark and that is why, in part they commanded
- 2:04Speaker 3: the value it did. Another part of it is it's
- 2:06Speaker 3: a California franchise. There are a lot of wealthy people
- 2:09Speaker 3: in California and there aren't many franchises available for sale.
- 2:12Speaker 3: So from that perspective too, it's still a healthy number
- 2:18Speaker 3: for a team like the Padres. And we saw the
- 2:21Speaker 3: Yankees valued at ten million yesterday with the private equity investment,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and I know what MLB people are thinking this morning
- 2:28Speaker 3: with the Lakers sale coming out and the valuation being
- 2:30Speaker 3: twelve point five billion, why can't we be like that?
- 2:34Speaker 3: And that's kind of the whole driving force behind the
- 2:37Speaker 3: salary cap argument for the owners, it would increase franchise values.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Can do you.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Think that there are some of these other small market
- 2:46Speaker 4: teams that see this number? And I do you believe
- 2:48Speaker 4: that we'll see some more teams potentially sell in the future,
- 2:52Speaker 4: like the near future?
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know about the near future, Kevin,
- 2:56Speaker 3: because they want to see people buying the teams, whether
- 3:01Speaker 3: the labor negotiations go toward a cap or toward a
- 3:05Speaker 3: current system with revisions. So I would want answers to
- 3:09Speaker 3: that if I was a person interested in buying a
- 3:11Speaker 3: team now, once there is an agreement, and particularly if
- 3:16Speaker 3: there is a cap, Yes, I believe a number of
- 3:19Speaker 3: owners will get out and try to take advantage of
- 3:21Speaker 3: the enhanced franchise values. But I still believe that a
- 3:25Speaker 3: cap is going to be a difficult thing for the
- 3:28Speaker 3: owners to achieve if they ever achieve it, And there
- 3:31Speaker 3: are ways, as I've said, and written about many times before,
- 3:35Speaker 3: to affect change in the economic system of the sport
- 3:39Speaker 3: without imposing a cap and therefore allowing this renaissance to continue.
- 3:43Speaker 3: The owners don't see it that way. They are cap
- 3:46Speaker 3: or nothing, but there has to be in my view,
- 3:49Speaker 3: some middle grounds.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Ken Well, the putter has changed the way they do
- 3:53Speaker 1: business at all now that the Seidler family is officially
- 3:56Speaker 1: being getting out by selling the team, because that was
- 3:59Speaker 1: one one of the great things about Peter Siler. He
- 4:02Speaker 1: even though they're considered a small market, they get forty
- 4:04Speaker 1: thousand plus fans a game. He was signing the stars,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the people were coming out, they were making it seem
- 4:09Speaker 1: like they're making money. I know they're saying they're losing money,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but I feel like there's somehow, some way the team
- 4:13Speaker 1: wouldn't Someone wouldn't come in and buy the team for
- 4:15Speaker 1: this much if they were losing their butts every time
- 4:18Speaker 1: they took the field.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So will they change the way they do business?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Meaning will Aj Preller be handcuffed and tied down and
- 4:24Speaker 1: not be able to go out and do what he does.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I don't know Aj that will ever see them operate
- 4:30Speaker 3: the way they did under Peter Seiler. He was aggressive
- 4:33Speaker 3: in a way that most owners considered too aggressive, and
- 4:37Speaker 3: perhaps that is a fair assessment. They have some deals
- 4:40Speaker 3: on their books now that are going to age badly.
- 4:42Speaker 3: We know that. I do expect though that, as I
- 4:46Speaker 3: said earlier, they'll be less restrained than they've been the
- 4:50Speaker 3: last couple of years. So I don't know what that
- 4:53Speaker 3: means for them going forward. They've got a lot of
- 4:55Speaker 3: money on the books already, obviously, so it's going to
- 4:59Speaker 3: be a delicate balance, I would say. But at the
- 5:01Speaker 3: same time, generally speaking, when new ownership comes in, they
- 5:06Speaker 3: want to make a splash. They want to show the
- 5:09Speaker 3: fans that hey, we're here, We're serious, we want to
- 5:12Speaker 3: be good owners, good stewards of the franchise. I would
- 5:15Speaker 3: expect they're not going to go backwards in payroll.
- 5:19Speaker 4: And speaking of another team that there's probably a lot
- 5:23Speaker 4: of baseball fans out there wishing what sell the Angels.
- 5:26Speaker 4: What do you make of the firing of Mike Maddox,
- 5:29Speaker 4: and what do you make of the job that John
- 5:30Speaker 4: Mazelex done, And do you give him a lot of
- 5:33Speaker 4: credit for kind of getting Artie's attention and actually making
- 5:38Speaker 4: some moves during the trade deadline and do you believe
- 5:40Speaker 4: that they keep them long term.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It's a lot of questions, but I'll try to answer. Sorry,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and if I forget them, Kevin, you can remind me.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I do believe he's going to stay long term. I
- 5:51Speaker 3: do believe he did a good job at the deadline.
- 5:53Speaker 3: And yes, it was a different direction for them. They
- 5:55Speaker 3: have not sold in the past and they sold here
- 5:59Speaker 3: and they seemingly did fairly well and it was impactful.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So from that perspective, yeah, that's a healthy thing. And
- 6:07Speaker 3: if John Mizelak has the confidence of Artie Moreno to
- 6:10Speaker 3: make those kinds of moves, that's a healthy thing. They
- 6:14Speaker 3: need someone with some gravitas running the ship. He from
- 6:18Speaker 3: everything I've heard, wants to stay in the job. He
- 6:21Speaker 3: hasn't actually said that, but all the people around baseball,
- 6:25Speaker 3: his colleagues, think that he definitely wants it now. As
- 6:29Speaker 3: for the pitching coach and the other two coaches that
- 6:31Speaker 3: were fired Maddox, Dom Chidy and Darryl Scott, what Miszelac
- 6:37Speaker 3: said is telling. He said they weren't using the technology
- 6:41Speaker 3: available to them, and that's something that he's not going
- 6:43Speaker 3: to tolerate, quite clearly, because he took their jobs away
- 6:46Speaker 3: from them, and Miszaelac in the past has shown that
- 6:51Speaker 3: if you don't do it the way he thinks you
- 6:53Speaker 3: should be doing it, he is the boss. He may
- 6:55Speaker 3: make a change. Mike Schilt remember Saint Louis Cardinals, they
- 6:59Speaker 3: make the playoffs, had this amazing run to end the season,
- 7:02Speaker 3: and he loses his job because him and Mizelocke were
- 7:05Speaker 3: not on the same page. So this is a team
- 7:08Speaker 3: clearly that needs a lot of help. They recognize that.
- 7:12Speaker 3: That is kind of step one. Recognize the problem and
- 7:16Speaker 3: then step two act on it. It seems that they
- 7:19Speaker 3: are doing that. And obviously, when you change coaches after
- 7:23Speaker 3: saying you wouldn't, something that resulted in friction happened. And
- 7:28Speaker 3: that is what happened.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Here science experiment for the one minute, we have to
- 7:34Speaker 5: tell you about why we love Quint's electrolytes including watermelon salt,
- 7:38Speaker 5: raspberry salt. And I'm holding a citrus salt, just opened
- 7:41Speaker 5: it and pours some powder into my water, Shake it up,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and AJ, why do you love it?
- 7:45Speaker 1: I love Quints because after a long night out, a
- 7:48Speaker 1: long day at the gym, a long walk in this
- 7:50Speaker 1: Florida humidity, it tastes great and it gives me all
- 7:52Speaker 1: the electrolytes I need. Why sugar free, Stevia free, Keto
- 7:57Speaker 1: approve and taste sweet because of that fermented rice.
- 8:03Speaker 5: It does taste really good. I'm drinking in right now
- 8:06Speaker 5: while we talking about it. It's also made in the USA,
- 8:08Speaker 5: rigorously third party tested. Give your body what it really
- 8:12Speaker 5: needs to stay hydrated. Go to quins dot com slash

- 8:26Speaker 5: product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent
- 8:29Speaker 5: any disease.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I mean, I listen again. I love John Mosallic. I
- 8:34Speaker 1: played for under him at the Cardinals. I know Mike
- 8:36Speaker 1: Maddox I played for him under the Texas Rangers. They're
- 8:39Speaker 1: both great.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I know.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I've known Dom Chidy for thirty years since I was
- 8:42Speaker 2: in high school. Okay, what I.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Find ironic is that John Mosallic isn't this one of
- 8:47Speaker 1: the big things they had about him in Saint Louis
- 8:49Speaker 1: was that he didn't use the technology and he didn't
- 8:51Speaker 1: use all the analytics, and now he got rid of great.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Uh jeez, Mike Maddics, not Greg Madics, Mike Maddics because
- 8:58Speaker 1: he didn't use the technology.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Isn't this kind of weird thing?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Hey, j That wasn't the issue in Saint Louis. The
- 9:03Speaker 3: issue was they kind of let the player development system.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Oh Okay, wither Away and Katie Wu reported extensively on
- 9:10Speaker 3: this at the time. For the athletic they didn't hire
- 9:13Speaker 3: enough people. They were short. It wasn't an analytics based thing. Now,
- 9:18Speaker 3: if you want to say in Mike, yeah, Mike Mannix's
- 9:22Speaker 3: defense that they had some really good things happen with
- 9:25Speaker 3: they're pitching this year. That is true, Deptbur's and Soriano
- 9:29Speaker 3: the way they've pitched, Irana the way he is pitched.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I watched Sammy and Natara last night close out the
- 9:34Speaker 3: game against the Rangers pretty good. So I know from
- 9:38Speaker 3: an ERA standpoint, they ranked twenty third or so, and
- 9:41Speaker 3: they lead the league in walks. Okay, but they did
- 9:44Speaker 3: have some good things happen. This was clearly as it
- 9:47Speaker 3: was with shild years back, a philosophical difference, and that
- 9:51Speaker 3: is why the move.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Happened, staying in the division. Can what do you make
- 9:56Speaker 4: of the Seattle Mariners? And you've been covering the game
- 9:59Speaker 4: a long time, have you ever seen a bigger drop
- 10:01Speaker 4: off from what cal Rawly did last year to what
- 10:04Speaker 4: he's doing this season?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Kevin, Off the top of my head, probably not, And
- 10:10Speaker 3: certainly if I had time to think about it and
- 10:13Speaker 3: took some time to think about it, I would imagine
- 10:15Speaker 3: that if I calculated biggest drop offs since I've been
- 10:19Speaker 3: covering the game, this would be one of the biggest.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You don't go from sixty home runs to where he
- 10:23Speaker 3: is right now. And he took accountability for it last
- 10:26Speaker 3: night speaking to reporters in New York. He said, listen,
- 10:29Speaker 3: I haven't been very good, but their team hasn't been
- 10:32Speaker 3: very good, and it's so surprising to me. They were
- 10:35Speaker 3: tied for ninth in runs last year. Now they are thirtieth.
- 10:40Speaker 3: They are last with on their club Randy Rose, Arena,
- 10:44Speaker 3: Julia Rodriguez, cal Raley, Josh Naylor, Cole Young is a
- 10:49Speaker 3: pretty good player. Cole Emerson, of course, has struggled a
- 10:52Speaker 3: little bit. JP Crawford. They have on this team a
- 10:56Speaker 3: number of quality offensive players and it just isn't happening
- 11:00Speaker 3: for them. I don't know the reason for that. It's
- 11:03Speaker 3: kind of curious, and sometimes if your number one guy
- 11:06Speaker 3: falls off, as Rally has, that can have this kind
- 11:08Speaker 3: of effect.
- 11:09Speaker 6: But I don't know.
- 11:11Speaker 3: That's an awful lot to put on cal Raley. The
- 11:14Speaker 3: other guys have not performed either, and it's a team
- 11:17Speaker 3: wide thing.
- 11:19Speaker 1: By the way, they did fire their third hitting coach Ken,
- 11:22Speaker 1: just so you know that they should definitely get a
- 11:26Speaker 1: huge difference huge They've done nothing but score ten runs
- 11:28Speaker 1: every game since they did that.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Ken. What about cal Rawley?
- 11:30Speaker 1: I know we're going to get into this a little
- 11:32Speaker 1: bit later, but cal Rawley came out instead of Dan
- 11:35Speaker 1: Wilson or someone out coming out to answer the questions,
- 11:37Speaker 1: it was cal Rawley. Do you does that mean anything
- 11:40Speaker 1: to the Mariners team organization or was it just kind
- 11:44Speaker 1: of something to do.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Dan Wilson answers questions every night, so it's not like
- 11:49Speaker 3: he's ducking them. But cal Raley is the best player
- 11:53Speaker 3: on the team, or the most accomplished player I guess
- 11:55Speaker 3: in certain ways on the team, and they're in New
- 11:58Speaker 3: York last night, and there are more reporters in New
- 12:01Speaker 3: York and there were probably more questions being asked. So
- 12:05Speaker 3: he stood there, he answered the questions, and yeah, he
- 12:09Speaker 3: took a broad approach in saying that the team is
- 12:12Speaker 3: not performed and they've got to get it together and
- 12:14Speaker 3: they've got to put yesterday behind them and go forward
- 12:17Speaker 3: all of the things that you might expect him to say.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So I don't see it as Dan Wilson shirking his responsibilities. Now,
- 12:24Speaker 3: Dan Wilson might be held accountable for all this if
- 12:27Speaker 3: they missed the playoffs, different story. But Raley was simply
- 12:31Speaker 3: doing what often players do when they are considered the
- 12:35Speaker 3: leaders of the team, kind of giving a team wide assessment.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm gonna transition to the Blue Jays because talking
- 12:42Speaker 4: Mariners blue Jays, both teams, you know, went really deep
- 12:45Speaker 4: in the postseason last year. Blue Jays have been playing
- 12:49Speaker 4: better baseball recently. They've done a great job keeping themselves
- 12:53Speaker 4: relevant and they're three and a half games back as
- 12:56Speaker 4: we sit today. But as a Trey Ya Savage injury
- 13:00Speaker 4: and the uncertainty coming back just too much for this
- 13:02Speaker 4: team to overcome.
- 13:04Speaker 3: It might be Kevin and they have played better. They've
- 13:07Speaker 3: gotten an injection of talent from the young guys that
- 13:11Speaker 3: they have. Brett Bateman, Charles McAdoo. Bateman came over, and
- 13:15Speaker 3: the Gosspan trade has made an immediate impact. Kind of
- 13:18Speaker 3: shocking to see it happen this quickly. And all that
- 13:21Speaker 3: is good, but pitching injuries, rotation injuries have kind of
- 13:25Speaker 3: been the story of their season, along with Lad's power
- 13:29Speaker 3: outage and all of that. It might be difficult, yes,
- 13:33Speaker 3: with You Savage going out for them to sustain it,
- 13:36Speaker 3: but they have played better, and that race for the
- 13:39Speaker 3: third American League wild card is sort of wide open.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Pretty much every team is in it. So I don't
- 13:46Speaker 3: rule them out because they are too good. They are
- 13:49Speaker 3: a team that we saw last year what they could
- 13:51Speaker 3: do when they are clicking, and they really haven't clicked
- 13:54Speaker 3: offensively the same way. But the pitching thing, it's going
- 13:58Speaker 3: to be tough to overcome. Now they have Cese who
- 14:01Speaker 3: was good last night, Schureser Bieber, They're not bereft of
- 14:05Speaker 3: starting pitching, but obviously You Savage was a big part
- 14:08Speaker 3: of that mix.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah, the AA least is tough this year Ken because
- 14:13Speaker 1: of the rays. The rays won't lose. They won eight
- 14:15Speaker 1: in a row. Nick Martinez CG in Sacramento. Or it's
- 14:19Speaker 1: impossible to pitch last night, right, he's thirty six years old.
- 14:23Speaker 2: He's doing it.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Have the Rays now officially put enough distance between themselves?
- 14:27Speaker 1: I think it's six games now between them and the Yankees?
- 14:29Speaker 1: Or we can say the Raiser probably going to win
- 14:33Speaker 1: this division.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Yes, we probably can say that, and the odds would
- 14:37Speaker 3: indicate that six games on August twelfth is not inconsequential.
- 14:41Speaker 3: It's also not insurmountable. We've seen teams blow leads of
- 14:45Speaker 3: this nature Detroit Tigers last year, and it can happen.
- 14:50Speaker 3: The Rays have been quite consistent. The only thing that
- 14:53Speaker 3: perhaps can stop them is if they slow down a
- 14:57Speaker 3: little bit. They've been playing some weaker competition lately, and
- 15:00Speaker 3: then the Yankees get healthy and get hot. Can that happen? Absolutely,
- 15:04Speaker 3: it can happen. But the Rays are for real. We've
- 15:07Speaker 3: seen that, and last night Taylor Walls home runs from
- 15:11Speaker 3: both sides of the plate. He's the one guy, the
- 15:13Speaker 3: shortstop who hasn't hit. Actually, they've had a few guys
- 15:16Speaker 3: who haven't hit, but they have the three big pillars
- 15:19Speaker 3: in their offense. It's Ronda, it's Kemenero, and it's Yondi Diaz.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Those three guys plus now Liam Hicks. It's an interesting
- 15:29Speaker 3: Rays team for sure.
- 15:31Speaker 1: No doubt, no doubt. Can All right, this weekend, you're working?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Which game are you working?
- 15:36Speaker 3: And I'm working Dodgers at Brewers. I'm sorry, Brewers at Dodgers,
- 15:39Speaker 3: Dodgers State.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Thank God, Thank goodness for me that I am not
- 15:43Speaker 1: in LA this weekend, because two weeks with you is
- 15:46Speaker 1: enough ken for me. So if I would have had
- 15:47Speaker 1: to go three weeks in a row, I would have
- 15:50Speaker 1: had to think about calling in sick this weekend.
- 15:52Speaker 2: So thank you. How worried are you about the Brewers
- 15:55Speaker 2: and their injuries? Now?
- 15:56Speaker 1: With Terang Joey Ortiz, they're starting to pile up a
- 15:58Speaker 1: little bit here.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Well, ij First of all, I always enjoy working with you.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I'm sorry the feeling is not mutual. But anyway, the Brewers, Yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 3: Pratt is on the injured list and they've got also
- 16:09Speaker 3: Joey or Tis out right now, so it's a little
- 16:12Speaker 3: bit of a concern than Terrang. Pat Murphy last night
- 16:15Speaker 3: revealed he's been playing with the spring thumb. None of
- 16:17Speaker 3: this is great, none of this is also devastating. So
- 16:22Speaker 3: they've had an interesting week. They've moved Yellich and Contrasts
- 16:25Speaker 3: down in the order, and the Padres have beaten them
- 16:28Speaker 3: around a little bit the last couple of nights. Kyle
- 16:30Speaker 3: Harrison wasn't very good last night. But against the Dodgers,
- 16:34Speaker 3: it's going to be a measure a test for them,
- 16:36Speaker 3: and it'll be interesting to see how that turns out.
- 16:39Speaker 3: The Brewers have been the better team overall this year
- 16:42Speaker 3: than the Dodgers. Right now, while the Dodgers aren't playing
- 16:46Speaker 3: particularly great, they might be catching the Brewers at the
- 16:48Speaker 3: right time because of these physical things that the Brewers
- 16:51Speaker 3: are dealing with.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Makes sense, Kenn, Why did you not get a Pope
- 16:55Speaker 2: at on Saturday? That's what I want to know.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Well, Aj, the Hats didn't do them much good last night,
- 17:00Speaker 3: did they.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I know, I cannot believe they lost last night. They
- 17:03Speaker 1: had a four to nothing lead and I was thinking
- 17:06Speaker 1: to myself. I was like, man, the number one lock
- 17:08Speaker 1: in my life should have been the White Sox winning
- 17:10Speaker 1: on Pope night, and then they blew it.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I was like, don't thank goodness, but I still lost
- 17:14Speaker 2: my luck. But anyways, Ken, I.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Mean they won on a night. They did win on
- 17:17Speaker 3: that night. They came from behind, but Pope night not great.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I know, I know, Ken, that's that's sacrilegious of you
- 17:25Speaker 1: to say, Ken, So I'm gonna not hold it against you.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Okay, all right, anyways.
- 17:28Speaker 1: If you want to see if you want to see

- 18:13Speaker 5: What else do you love about it?
- 18:14Speaker 6: Krats, Well, I have it on right now and I'm
- 18:17Speaker 6: all about quality.
- 18:18Speaker 2: But you know what.
- 18:19Speaker 6: You know how good your clothes are when you're a
- 18:21Speaker 6: parent and your kids keep stealing all of it. My
- 18:25Speaker 6: daughter stole the sweatshirt, my son sole one of my

- 19:07Speaker 1: All right, let's welcome on Seattle Times. Be reporter for
- 19:11Speaker 1: the Seattle Mariners that cannot seem to win a game,
- 19:14Speaker 1: Ryan Davis. Check out his great articles in the Seattle Times. Hey, Ryan,
- 19:18Speaker 1: looks like you're in a hotel. You must be in
- 19:20Speaker 1: New York City. This ain't Montana. Even though your shirt
- 19:22Speaker 1: says Montana Till I Die. New York City is a
- 19:25Speaker 1: little bit different than Montana.
- 19:28Speaker 7: Yeah, just kind of slightly. I mean, my hometown has
- 19:30Speaker 7: got about seven thousand people. They're probably more than that
- 19:34Speaker 7: in Central Park today when I was out walking around.
- 19:36Speaker 7: So it is a little bit of a culture shock.
- 19:38Speaker 7: I've been coming here for twenty years and it still
- 19:41Speaker 7: gets to be a little overwhelming. You put me in
- 19:43Speaker 7: the mountains, I'll find my way out. I can tell
- 19:46Speaker 7: you which way is north. You put me in a
- 19:48Speaker 7: city and I end up getting lost in Central Park
- 19:50Speaker 7: and ending up in Harlem wandering around going where the
- 19:52Speaker 7: hell am I? So it's always fun coming to New York,
- 19:56Speaker 7: but it's just it's a little bit culture shock for me.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And I don't know if you know this or not,
- 20:01Speaker 1: but the streets are numbered, so you can just count.
- 20:03Speaker 1: I'm just just throwing that up.
- 20:05Speaker 8: I have to wear my glasses and I can't be
- 20:08Speaker 8: doing in public.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Question for you, is this season over for the Seattle
- 20:15Speaker 4: Manners or do they have any fight left in them?
- 20:20Speaker 8: It's certainly circling the drain.
- 20:23Speaker 7: You guys were talking about the Rays, and you know,
- 20:25Speaker 7: the Mariners just got swept by the Rays before coming here,
- 20:28Speaker 7: and I was I've covered Bowl series, but absolutely impressed
- 20:32Speaker 7: with how the Rays do everything, and the Mariners are
- 20:35Speaker 7: just doing all the opposite things of that. They're not
- 20:37Speaker 7: playing well, they're not hitting with runners in the scoring positions,
- 20:40Speaker 7: they're not hitting for any power to make little mistakes
- 20:44Speaker 7: in the field.
- 20:46Speaker 8: And you know, their their middle relief is pretty bad.
- 20:48Speaker 7: But really they just they can't put together a complete
- 20:51Speaker 7: nine innings right now to save their lives. I mean,
- 20:54Speaker 7: like you watch them play and it's just kind of
- 20:57Speaker 7: like mind numbing to see what's going to go wrong.
- 21:00Speaker 7: They take an early lead, they give it right back.
- 21:02Speaker 7: There's no shutdown innings, you know, or they they have
- 21:05Speaker 7: a close player. They need to make a play in
- 21:07Speaker 7: the field. It doesn't necessarily have to be like a
- 21:09Speaker 7: highlight reel play, but it needs to be a winning play.
- 21:11Speaker 7: They aren't making it, you know, things like that. And
- 21:14Speaker 7: like even last night when they gave up two runs early.
- 21:18Speaker 7: They hit a ball Grisham, it's with Christian Wore maybe
- 21:22Speaker 7: it's Hedges hits the ball, or well it's hits the
- 21:24Speaker 7: ball into the triangle and right field. They don't make
- 21:27Speaker 7: the play. You know, Taylor Word's playing too deep, doesn't
- 21:29Speaker 7: get a read on it. Cul Young can't get back
- 21:31Speaker 7: Julio is playing the other way. They came back. You know,
- 21:34Speaker 7: the ball drops, it loads the bases again, another single
- 21:37Speaker 7: on a ground ball through. So it's like all the
- 21:39Speaker 7: things you need to do to be a winning team,
- 21:41Speaker 7: they're just not doing it. And that you know, I
- 21:44Speaker 7: have seen nothing that says they're going to come out
- 21:47Speaker 7: of this. You know, this is trip is pretty brutal.
- 21:49Speaker 7: It's New York all by three in Houston, all by
- 21:52Speaker 7: three in Milwaukee. You know, you can get away with
- 21:55Speaker 7: going four and five or even three and six if
- 21:57Speaker 7: you win a couple against Houston. You know, if they
- 22:01Speaker 7: if they go three and six but leaves two to Houston,
- 22:04Speaker 7: I think that, you know, mathematically'd be pretty difficult.
- 22:06Speaker 8: Even with the easiest their schedule is in September.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't ease up after that.
- 22:12Speaker 1: They go they play the Cubs at home and the
- 22:13Speaker 1: Phillies at home, two teams that are really I mean,
- 22:16Speaker 1: it must get reallyas in September because the end of
- 22:19Speaker 1: August is a is a bastard to get through. Well,
- 22:22Speaker 1: how much blame falls on Dan Wilson for this, And
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm not advocating for Dan Wilson to lose his job,
- 22:28Speaker 1: So please don't don't confuse this at all. But when
- 22:30Speaker 1: you're the manager and you're Jerry Depoto and you look
- 22:33Speaker 1: at it and you say, man, we made this. We
- 22:34Speaker 1: were two innings away from going to the first ever
- 22:37Speaker 1: time to the World Series last year, and now this
- 22:39Speaker 1: year we can't get out of our own way. How
- 22:42Speaker 1: much of this, unfortunately falls on the manager.
- 22:47Speaker 7: I mean, if you ask the fan base one, but
- 22:51Speaker 7: it comes with the territory of the job. I don't
- 22:53Speaker 7: think anybody believes that Alex Cora is a bad manager.
- 22:56Speaker 7: But you know what, the Red Sox were just in
- 22:59Speaker 7: a position where it wasn't working. Nothing was working. It
- 23:02Speaker 7: didn't seem to be like anything he could do to
- 23:04Speaker 7: make it better.
- 23:04Speaker 8: So they moved on.
- 23:05Speaker 7: And Rob Thompson had taken the Phillies to a ton
- 23:08Speaker 7: of success, but it just wasn't working. You know, in
- 23:11Speaker 7: any other scenario, I think the Mariners probably would have
- 23:15Speaker 7: moved on from from the manager.
- 23:17Speaker 8: I mean, you look at how they're playing.
- 23:19Speaker 7: I mean, I think they have one of the worst
- 23:21Speaker 7: records in baseball since July first. They're playing like three
- 23:26Speaker 7: thirty three baseball. But I don't know, given who Dan
- 23:30Speaker 7: Wilson is within the organization. I don't know that they're
- 23:32Speaker 7: going to go down that road. I do think there
- 23:34Speaker 7: is some lame on him in the sense that, like
- 23:37Speaker 7: so much of what he's done about ceding power to
- 23:40Speaker 7: the players and allowing the players to police themselves and
- 23:44Speaker 7: kind of turning the clubhouse over the players, that's all
- 23:47Speaker 7: well and good, but like when you're seeing these mistakes,
- 23:50Speaker 7: the lack of focus or the lack of attention to detail,
- 23:54Speaker 7: then that falls upon you to make some changes and
- 23:56Speaker 7: take some of that power away and say, hey, look now,
- 23:59Speaker 7: this isn't working. And you know what, we've given you
- 24:02Speaker 7: the privilege, you've abused it, so we're going to take
- 24:04Speaker 7: some of it back. And whether that's you know, calling
- 24:06Speaker 7: out a player publicly or benching a player or doing
- 24:09Speaker 7: something different, I think you have to look at that.
- 24:12Speaker 7: So you know, it all falls on the manager because
- 24:15Speaker 7: he's the one who's overseeing it all, and he's overseeing
- 24:18Speaker 7: the player's police in the clubous, he's overseeing his assistant
- 24:20Speaker 7: coaches and how they handle stuff, and then also some
- 24:23Speaker 7: of the endgame decisions.
- 24:24Speaker 8: They're just kind of curious.
- 24:25Speaker 7: I know they rely heavily on data points, and which
- 24:29Speaker 7: is funny because he was more of a managed by
- 24:31Speaker 7: the gut guy last year, which is why we saw
- 24:33Speaker 7: Bizardo in Game seven of the LCS, And this year
- 24:37Speaker 7: he's kind of got regressed to the other side, and
- 24:40Speaker 7: it feels like he's sticking very rigidly to some of
- 24:43Speaker 7: the data points or some of the pregame planning that
- 24:46Speaker 7: they have and not really adjusting with what he's seeing
- 24:49Speaker 7: within the game.
- 24:51Speaker 4: And no matter what offensive statistic you look at, the
- 24:54Speaker 4: Mariner's rank near the bottom in it. My question is,
- 25:00Speaker 4: with so many teams in the American League still being competitive,
- 25:04Speaker 4: do you believe the Mariners missed an opportunity to potentially
- 25:07Speaker 4: trade one of their starting pitchers in order to help
- 25:11Speaker 4: this offense long term?
- 25:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think so, just because the value
- 25:17Speaker 7: of this starting pitcher is probably never higher than it
- 25:19Speaker 7: was going to be.
- 25:20Speaker 8: You know, like George.
- 25:21Speaker 7: Kirby, if you put them out there, there are a
- 25:23Speaker 7: lot of teams that are very interested in George Kirby.
- 25:26Speaker 8: I'm wondering though, you know, they went.
- 25:28Speaker 7: And got Taylor Ward, who was one of the better
- 25:30Speaker 7: bats available on the market as a rental, but I'm
- 25:33Speaker 7: wondering what.
- 25:33Speaker 8: The hitters market truly was.
- 25:37Speaker 7: You know, in terms of who was available, maybe somebody
- 25:40Speaker 7: that's got some club control moving forward. You know, there
- 25:43Speaker 7: just wasn't a lot of teams selling. You know, like
- 25:45Speaker 7: even like when Miami was dangling.
- 25:47Speaker 8: Otto Lopez out there, You're like, okay, well, why are
- 25:49Speaker 8: they doing that and what's what's it going to cost.
- 25:53Speaker 7: I do think that they if they don't do it now,
- 25:57Speaker 7: since they didn't do it at the trade that line,
- 25:58Speaker 7: it's something they have to look at going into the
- 26:02Speaker 7: off season before that, you know, before the expected lockout,
- 26:05Speaker 7: make a trade, because you're gonna you saw have Kate
- 26:07Speaker 7: Anderson there waiting to come up.
- 26:09Speaker 8: You have five stars. Now he's Ryan Sloan. I mean, like,
- 26:12Speaker 8: I think you do have.
- 26:13Speaker 7: To look at that and say, okay, George Kirby Willing,
- 26:17Speaker 7: is he somebody's gonna sign an extension? Is he's somebody
- 26:19Speaker 7: they want to sign to an extension? If not, maybe
- 26:22Speaker 7: you dangle him out there and see what you can get.
- 26:24Speaker 7: I tell you, like the way hitting is right now,
- 26:28Speaker 7: like Randy or Roserena couldn't have picked better walk her
- 26:31Speaker 7: performance than he has because like the lack of right
- 26:35Speaker 7: handed hitting and competent right handed hitting available and what
- 26:39Speaker 7: it's going to be available on the market. Randy's gonna
- 26:41Speaker 7: get a hundred million dollars, no doubt in my mind.
- 26:44Speaker 7: And that's upped considerably to where he was when the
- 26:48Speaker 7: Mariners acquired him a couple of years ago, and it
- 26:50Speaker 7: was trending downward with the Rays.
- 26:53Speaker 8: He's he's made himself some money this year.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Dude. They did trade a starting pitcher.
- 26:58Speaker 1: They traded Luis Castio to the White Sox, So thank
- 27:00Speaker 1: you very much, I think thank you.
- 27:03Speaker 7: I mean, honestly, like when when Jerry was able to
- 27:06Speaker 7: trade Luis and they took on all that money and
- 27:08Speaker 7: they even got money back on that, and they got
- 27:11Speaker 7: a really good prospect, and they got some guys like
- 27:15Speaker 7: I'm like, okay, this is you know, I was like, man,
- 27:18Speaker 7: this is almost as impressive when he was able to
- 27:20Speaker 7: trade Robinson Cano's contract a few years ago. So yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 7: I mean, I don't think that was you know, it
- 27:27Speaker 7: was tough seeing Castile go and he was a guy
- 27:30Speaker 7: that really had a lot of a lot of presence
- 27:33Speaker 7: in the clubhouse, in a calmbing presence, but you know,
- 27:36Speaker 7: they had to make that move.
- 27:37Speaker 8: It was just getting kind of counterproductive having six stars.
- 27:40Speaker 5: This is that time of year, aj it is Baseball's
- 27:43Speaker 5: time to shine, and it is sea Geek's time to
- 27:46Speaker 5: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing, seating
- 27:51Speaker 5: and games that are even sold out available on sea geek.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 27:58Speaker 1: coming up.
- 27:59Speaker 2: We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's Yankee's red Sox?
- 28:01Speaker 2: That means stuff.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Again, there's some big moments that are coming up here
- 28:04Speaker 1: and the as the penachases really heat up, go to
- 28:08Speaker 1: seke can find those green tickets with the best deals
- 28:11Speaker 1: and get yourself out to an MLB game.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 28:16Speaker 5: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 28:19Speaker 5: feel is your best.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Look.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Green dot means very good code for you. It's Territory
- 28:26Speaker 5: ten ten percent off your next set of MLB tickets

- 28:37Speaker 5: and have the code automatically added to your account so
- 28:40Speaker 5: you can use it later.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I know, I wish, I wish you would have had
- 28:43Speaker 1: you on I don't think we did when they were
- 28:45Speaker 1: doing the piggyback thing, because we all said it was
- 28:47Speaker 1: a terrible idea, and they were Everyone was saying, Oh,
- 28:49Speaker 1: they're so happy doing this, Like I know they're not happy.
- 28:52Speaker 1: These guys want to pitch every fifth day. So I
- 28:54Speaker 1: don't even want to get into that because it was
- 28:56Speaker 1: so long ago. But anyways, I want to go to
- 28:58Speaker 1: Caloraly what happened last night. Cal Rawly was the first
- 29:01Speaker 1: one out, not Brian Wu finally pitched ball on the road, right,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Not Dan Wilson.
- 29:05Speaker 2: It was Cal Rawly.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Was this just him trying to step up for the
- 29:08Speaker 1: team and just put all the pressure on him and
- 29:10Speaker 1: take it off the rest of the team.
- 29:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so.
- 29:14Speaker 7: I think Cal's very aware of what his performance is
- 29:18Speaker 7: and how much he's struggling.
- 29:19Speaker 8: And you know, I wrote on Monday.
- 29:22Speaker 7: Just kind of about the prospects of firing Dan Wilson,
- 29:25Speaker 7: how I didn't think it was going to happen based
- 29:27Speaker 7: on who he was within the organization, that maybe they'd
- 29:29Speaker 7: make a decision after the season.
- 29:31Speaker 8: But yeah, Cal walked out there. We weren't expecting it.
- 29:34Speaker 8: He still had his spikes on.
- 29:36Speaker 7: I think he had just taken the tape off, but
- 29:37Speaker 7: like he's sweating, and he just basically had struck out
- 29:41Speaker 7: tend the game and went in, dropped his stuff off,
- 29:43Speaker 7: and came out and told the PR person that he
- 29:46Speaker 7: I'm going to go talk to these guys. And it's
- 29:48Speaker 7: it's kind of an old school thing, you know, something
- 29:51Speaker 7: he probably picked up from Deeger or Mitch Hannagher when
- 29:53Speaker 7: he was when he was a rookie. They would do
- 29:56Speaker 7: that at times, stand there and kind of wear it.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Nelson Cruiz and did it a lot. And I think
- 30:02Speaker 7: I think he wants to take some accountability for how
- 30:04Speaker 7: he's playing, how this team's played, and maybe deflect a
- 30:07Speaker 7: little bit of some of the pressure off the ban
- 30:09Speaker 7: or his teammates, you know.
- 30:10Speaker 8: And as he said, he's been awful.
- 30:13Speaker 7: Like if cal Rawley is even a cal Rawley of
- 30:16Speaker 7: twenty four where he's hitting thirty five bombs, you know,
- 30:20Speaker 7: driving in ninety or whatever, they're not seven games or
- 30:24Speaker 7: eight games under five hundred, they're right or probably above
- 30:27Speaker 7: five hundred. I mean, like the production that you know
- 30:30Speaker 7: so much was built around him, and he to be worse.
- 30:33Speaker 8: That even his worst year is a huge issue for
- 30:37Speaker 8: the team and I think he understands it. I think
- 30:39Speaker 8: he's frustrated that he can't find his way out of it.
- 30:42Speaker 8: And I think what you're seeing at times is he's
- 30:44Speaker 8: trying too.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Hard to find his way out of it because he
- 30:46Speaker 7: knows that so much of the issues kind of stem
- 30:51Speaker 7: from him and move outward. You know, whether that's fair
- 30:53Speaker 7: or not, because there's been a lot of failures on
- 30:55Speaker 7: his team, but like you know, he's kind of what
- 30:59Speaker 7: makes them go. You know, last year they had some
- 31:02Speaker 7: issues offensively, but when you have a guy that hit
- 31:04Speaker 7: sixty bombs and drives in one forty, it covers.
- 31:07Speaker 8: Up a lot of your warts. And that's what happened.
- 31:09Speaker 7: Like when they needed a big hit, they're down too,
- 31:12Speaker 7: he'd hit a three run homer. They're just not kidding
- 31:14Speaker 7: that they're not getting anything from him, And I think
- 31:17Speaker 7: he just felt like he better step up and say something.
- 31:19Speaker 8: He's done this one other time this year.
- 31:21Speaker 7: It was in Miami, I believe they were really scuffling,
- 31:25Speaker 7: and he got up kind of just talked about it.
- 31:27Speaker 7: But in that situation too, they had played unbelievably sloppy
- 31:31Speaker 7: baseball and all the speed and the pressure that Miami
- 31:34Speaker 7: puts on teams made them look just slow and kind
- 31:36Speaker 7: of out of it, and they made a bunch of
- 31:38Speaker 7: mental mistakes.
- 31:38Speaker 8: So he kind of stepped forward and said, hey, we
- 31:40Speaker 8: can't play like this.
- 31:41Speaker 7: But this one was just basically him laying so much
- 31:44Speaker 7: of the blame for everything that's gone wrong on himself
- 31:47Speaker 7: and promising that he would do better. I mean, like,
- 31:51Speaker 7: you weren't expecting it. I'm not surprised, but you weren't
- 31:54Speaker 7: expecting it. But that's kind of who Cal is as
- 31:57Speaker 7: a player and a person. You know, he's a coach's kid,
- 31:59Speaker 7: and he understands and he knows how to read the
- 32:01Speaker 7: room pretty well.
- 32:03Speaker 4: All Right, last one for me, because you're speaking of,
- 32:06Speaker 4: you know, taking the blame. I was, and I don't
- 32:09Speaker 4: want to bring up a source subject. I was in
- 32:11Speaker 4: the building game seven last year when George Springer hit
- 32:14Speaker 4: that home run.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Is part of.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Cow struggles and this team struggles a hangover effect from
- 32:20Speaker 4: that going deep into the postseason, losing in that dramatic way,
- 32:24Speaker 4: and Cal specifically the amount of work he did last
- 32:28Speaker 4: year in order for this team to get to that position,
- 32:32Speaker 4: how many games he caught, never taking off day. Do
- 32:34Speaker 4: you believe this is all catching up to not only Cal,
- 32:37Speaker 4: but the Seattle Marinerds as well.
- 32:40Speaker 7: I don't think you're wrong in thinking that, Like with
- 32:43Speaker 7: Cal specifically, you know, he caught a ton last year
- 32:46Speaker 7: and he always used the word the phrase motion is lotion,
- 32:50Speaker 7: and that he felt less so the more he played
- 32:53Speaker 7: that he accumulated a lot of games, a lot of
- 32:55Speaker 7: it bats. Then you know, he didn't take a ton
- 32:59Speaker 7: of time off this offseason because.
- 33:01Speaker 8: He wanted to ramp up for the World Baseball Classic.
- 33:04Speaker 7: He changed up, he started his training earlier, He started
- 33:07Speaker 7: doing stuff earlier because he wanted to be ready for
- 33:09Speaker 7: the World Baseball Classic. Obviously that didn't go as planned,
- 33:12Speaker 7: you know, and I think he found out like how
- 33:14Speaker 7: difficult it was to stay prepared during the WBC when
- 33:17Speaker 7: you don't have hours upon hours of time at the
- 33:20Speaker 7: park to do your routine because there's other teams playing.
- 33:24Speaker 7: It's like a travel ball tournament where you go it's
- 33:26Speaker 7: almost like a show and go every day. I think
- 33:29Speaker 7: that was an issue and like he just and what
- 33:33Speaker 7: happened was I think with all that the WBC and
- 33:35Speaker 7: kind of the truncated schedule, he tried to cram everything
- 33:38Speaker 7: that he missed into four or five days leading into
- 33:40Speaker 7: the season, and I think that's what set him up
- 33:43Speaker 7: a little bit for that oblique injury that held just
- 33:45Speaker 7: kind of wore his body down so quickly trying to
- 33:48Speaker 7: get ready for this season, trying to get everything back,
- 33:51Speaker 7: you know. I talked with him right before the All
- 33:53Speaker 7: Star break, and he talked about understanding that they can't
- 33:59Speaker 7: make what happened, can't find the magic that they had
- 34:02Speaker 7: last year, and just expected like everything that they did
- 34:05Speaker 7: last year isn't just going to happen because a lot
- 34:08Speaker 7: of the same guys are back this year. It's a
- 34:10Speaker 7: different team, and you can't just fast forward to the
- 34:13Speaker 7: postseason because you're good or because you believe you're.
- 34:15Speaker 8: Better, you know.
- 34:16Speaker 7: And I think that's what he realized, that it was
- 34:18Speaker 7: even harder to get back to doing to where they
- 34:21Speaker 7: were before, given you know, all they accomplished and all
- 34:25Speaker 7: the expectations, and they talked about it, they talked about
- 34:27Speaker 7: going the World Series, and what they found out is
- 34:30Speaker 7: like you just can't.
- 34:32Speaker 8: You can't start your season in the postseason.
- 34:35Speaker 7: The games and April May, April May and June matter,
- 34:39Speaker 7: and they started playing poorly. And I think it's just
- 34:42Speaker 7: kind of snowballed on them, and they spent so long
- 34:45Speaker 7: trying to get back and saying, Okay, we can do this.
- 34:47Speaker 7: We've done this last year, and maybe it's got to
- 34:50Speaker 7: be a different thinking because just because they did it
- 34:53Speaker 7: last year doesn't mean they can do it this year.
- 34:55Speaker 8: Aja.
- 34:55Speaker 7: You remember when we were down in Atlanta, I think,
- 34:57Speaker 7: and they were bad down there, Sal shubbed on and
- 35:00Speaker 7: then Julio made a couple of ridiculous plays. The next
- 35:02Speaker 7: day they scored eighteen after that, and then they want
- 35:04Speaker 7: a heater. I don't know that the team is capable
- 35:07Speaker 7: of doing that, and nothing we've seen it from them
- 35:09Speaker 7: says they are. The talent is certainly there, but like
- 35:12Speaker 7: to sit there and say, Okay, we did this last year,
- 35:14Speaker 7: we got on a heater late, and we're able to
- 35:17Speaker 7: get there. I don't think that's logical to say it
- 35:19Speaker 7: now because it's a different team, a different makeup, and
- 35:22Speaker 7: a different set of issues than they had a year ago.
- 35:26Speaker 1: That's why making the playoffs is such a big deal
- 35:28Speaker 1: ryan for teams, and that's why it's so hard to
- 35:31Speaker 1: make the playoffs on baseball. We'll see what happens with
- 35:34Speaker 1: the Mariners, though we know we're all rooting for him,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and good thing they got rid of Bobby Maggie On
- 35:38Speaker 1: that's just saying.
- 35:39Speaker 2: It's such a mean spirited fellow. So thanks Ryan, don't
- 35:42Speaker 1: Forget to Thanks guys, don't forget to check out more
- 35:44Speaker 1: of his work at the Seattle Times.
