- 0:00Speaker 1: Too loud here on Thursday afternoon on sports Radio AM
- 0:06Speaker 1: thirteen under his own we miss him, Toby Keith and
- 0:12Speaker 1: uh and I know the uh the University of Oklahoma
- 0:15Speaker 1: community and the athletic community miss him as well. He
- 0:18Speaker 1: was a very loyal Sooner as well. And uh, some
- 0:22Speaker 1: might apply that question, how do you like me now
- 0:26Speaker 1: to Skip Johnson? Their baseball coach and even today Brent
- 0:29Speaker 1: Dinnables they had football coach to join us in our
- 0:31Speaker 1: SEC football previews. Are a good friend. Toby Rowland, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: play by play voice of the Oklahoma Sooners, joins us. Now,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Tim raw was, you know it was all set to
- 0:40Speaker 1: jump into football and target, but you and I haven't visited, uh,
- 0:45Speaker 1: you know much since the since the national championship. And
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I would submit to you that even as long
- 0:52Speaker 1: worn fans don't want anyone but Texas to win a
- 0:55Speaker 1: national championship, and especially if it's a rival school, I
- 0:58Speaker 1: had more people happy for Skip Johnson and how this
- 1:03Speaker 1: worked out for Skip and winning his first national championship
- 1:07Speaker 1: at the College World Series as a head coach. So,
- 1:10Speaker 1: in case you didn't hear, I was saying I had
- 1:12Speaker 1: more long worn fans. Tell me how happy they were
- 1:15Speaker 1: about Skip Johnson winning the National Championships. It was almost
- 1:18Speaker 1: like a lot of Texas fans could live with that
- 1:20Speaker 1: thing because of Skip and what a good man he is.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And I know it had be a happy time for you,
- 1:27Speaker 1: for the program, for the community, and certainly for the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Johnson family.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm happy for a lot of people, and Skip
- 1:36Speaker 2: Johnson is at the top of that list for George,
- 1:39Speaker 2: just as Texas fans are well aware, as salt of
- 1:43Speaker 2: the earth, as genuine as they come.
- 1:46Speaker 3: And what a riot.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I mean, completely out of the blue. Football was not
- 1:53Speaker 2: playing good baseball going into the NCAA tournament. They weren't
- 1:56Speaker 2: getting they weren't they were sloppy defensive. There was absolutely
- 2:01Speaker 2: no reason to believe that they would even make it
- 2:04Speaker 2: out of the Atlanta Regional. And for them to win
- 2:08Speaker 2: the National Championship is I think it's the most improbable
- 2:12Speaker 2: run that any ou team in any sport has ever
- 2:16Speaker 2: had to a title, and they get They went the
- 2:21Speaker 2: hard way.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You know, they beat the greatest.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Georgia Tech team of all time, they beat the best
- 2:27Speaker 2: Kansas team that they've ever had, arguably the best Georgia
- 2:31Speaker 2: team of all time, and arguably the best North Carolina
- 2:34Speaker 2: team they've ever had, and to win it so an
- 2:38Speaker 2: incredible accomplishment.
- 2:39Speaker 1: No doubt about it. And like I said, a lot
- 2:41Speaker 1: of longer events were happy for Skipping. Myself included about that,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and I texted him that night after the national title
- 2:47Speaker 1: and the text to be right back and was really
- 2:50Speaker 1: really good. So I transitioned from that into the announcement
- 2:54Speaker 1: today for the contract extension or the new six year
- 2:58Speaker 1: deal for Brent Vinables. Now, you know, I thought that
- 3:01Speaker 1: he's he's gonna fine job there and obviously coach the
- 3:04Speaker 1: Sooners into the playoffs, but fans being fans, and it's
- 3:06Speaker 1: like this in this town. It's like this in Athens, Georgia,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and Tuscaloose, Alabama, Baton Rouge, and then obviously in Norman
- 3:14Speaker 1: there's always going to be those who wonder, who question,
- 3:17Speaker 1: who doubt, all that sort of stuff. I would imagine,
- 3:20Speaker 1: at least for a good chunk of them, this new
- 3:23Speaker 1: deal for Brent Vennable's kind of puts a little bit
- 3:26Speaker 1: of that to rest for a time. Wouldn't you think, Oh,
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's college sports, you know, I mean if they go
- 3:35Speaker 1: out and go seven and five this year or you know, worse,
- 3:40Speaker 1: then they'll be calling for his head. So it certainly
- 3:44Speaker 1: increases the buyout you would think if something bad comes along.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But I think there will be.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Some skepticism about that for sure, about this extension among
- 3:56Speaker 2: a fraction of the fan base because us you know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: two years ago they did not that that year and
- 4:06Speaker 2: last year they went to the playoff, but they lost
- 4:08Speaker 2: their first game, and the expectations around here are national championships,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and so there will be a fraction of the fan
- 4:14Speaker 2: base that looks at this sideways. But I would say
- 4:18Speaker 2: the overwhelming majority is very happy with the job that
- 4:22Speaker 2: he's done. They love Brent from the first time around
- 4:25Speaker 2: when he was a defensive coordinator. They love the culture
- 4:29Speaker 2: that he has built at OU, and the defense has
- 4:34Speaker 2: been undeniably fantastic since he took over, and it's gotten
- 4:38Speaker 2: better every year. They have searched for answers to make
- 4:42Speaker 2: the offense better, and we'll see whether or not they've
- 4:45Speaker 2: accomplished that this year. There's reason to believe they're going
- 4:48Speaker 2: to be better on that side of the ball. But
- 4:50Speaker 2: the direction the program has gone in the last couple
- 4:53Speaker 2: of years, and especially what he has turned them into defensively.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Has everyone pretty excited? Would say that the vast majority
- 5:02Speaker 2: of the Ou fan base will receive this news today.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you brought up something, and like I said,
- 5:10Speaker 1: both of us have seen this with our own eyes.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And you pointed out the expectation is for national championships
- 5:17Speaker 1: at Oklahoma. This is the same thing at Texas. The
- 5:20Speaker 1: expectations for national championships. Now you've seen it like I've
- 5:23Speaker 1: seen it on social media. There are people in places
- 5:25Speaker 1: like Athens, George and Tuscaloosa or wherever and said, why
- 5:29Speaker 1: do you guys expect so much? You know, Oklahoma had
- 5:31Speaker 1: one one since two thousand, Texas had one one since
- 5:33Speaker 1: two thousand and five. What is this quote unquote expectation.
- 5:38Speaker 1: My response has always been the expectation is to be
- 5:41Speaker 1: in the hunt and to play for it every year,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and that's the expectation in the building where they have that,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and so fans of the teams, fans of Oklahoma, fans
- 5:54Speaker 1: of Texas do come to expect that. And yes, maybe
- 6:00Speaker 1: either one of them has won one in more than
- 6:03Speaker 1: two decades, and LSU's won the one in twenty nineteen
- 6:07Speaker 1: before that, going all the way back to four, but
- 6:10Speaker 1: there hasn't been. It's not like there's been an awful
- 6:13Speaker 1: lot of national championships among all of the SEC other
- 6:17Speaker 1: than Alabama in Georgia. So expectation is a is a
- 6:22Speaker 1: standard that comes out every year, don't you think, no
- 6:24Speaker 1: matter how long the drought might be.
- 6:31Speaker 2: This is one of those places where it's never gonna
- 6:35Speaker 2: change and they don't care what conference you're in.
- 6:40Speaker 3: And I don't I'm not even disagreeing with that, you know.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I think that if you are of blue blood status
- 6:47Speaker 2: and in football Oklahoma is, then that should be the
- 6:52Speaker 2: goal every year. There has to be a realization that
- 6:55Speaker 2: goes along with it that this is a tougher conference.
- 6:58Speaker 2: But at the same time, you know, it's not like
- 7:00Speaker 2: the old days where you had to be in the
- 7:01Speaker 2: top two to have a chance anymore. You know, you could,
- 7:04Speaker 2: you just got to make the playoff. And so I
- 7:08Speaker 2: don't think whoever the head coach is, whatever conference they play,
- 7:11Speaker 2: and it's never gonna change around here, nor should it.
- 7:15Speaker 2: They want to win a title, and it's been now
- 7:19Speaker 2: twenty six years since they won their last one, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: for a lot of Sooner fans, and they've had great
- 7:24Speaker 2: teams and great players in the last twenty six years,
- 7:28Speaker 2: but they don't have that championship, and so there is
- 7:31Speaker 2: certainly a bubbling hunger.
- 7:33Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Toby Rowland, play by play voice
- 7:35Speaker 1: of the Oklahoma Sooners, joining us here to preview the
- 7:39Speaker 1: Sooners here on thirteen hunderd Zone. Let me start where
- 7:42Speaker 1: I've started with all the other guys starting at quarterback,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and I would submit to that other than John Mattier
- 7:50Speaker 1: at Oklahoma, Arch Manning at Texas, Gunner Stockton at Georgia Trinidad, Shambliss,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I guess at Ole Miss those four you get below that.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Maybe Marcell Reed could be put in there as well.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But there's question marks. Just about all of the other
- 8:05Speaker 1: play by play guys have mentioned that to me they
- 8:07Speaker 1: kind of have a question mark at their quarterback spot.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Clearly that question mark does not exist for Oklahoma, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: I would imagine it's a pretty anxious materier to take
- 8:15Speaker 1: the rains again, being healthy, to try to take it
- 8:19Speaker 1: up another notch this season.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you mentioned healthy, and that's the key word. He
- 8:25Speaker 2: played two thirds of last season with a broken thumb
- 8:28Speaker 2: on his throwing hand, and it was you know, you
- 8:33Speaker 2: could tell. And the first game he came back. Obviously
- 8:35Speaker 2: was the Texas game, and anything beyond fifteen yards fluttered
- 8:40Speaker 2: on him, and even beyond that later in the year,
- 8:44Speaker 2: he just didn't have the zip on any downfield passing.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And what it did is defenses compacted on him. They
- 8:53Speaker 2: knew that the deep threat wasn't there, and so they
- 8:57Speaker 2: were able to play all eleven guys closer to line
- 9:00Speaker 2: of scrimmage and it made moving the football very difficult.
- 9:05Speaker 2: He's healthy, that thumb is healthy, the zip is back.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You know, the first four games last year before he
- 9:11Speaker 2: got hurt were fantastic and he was being mentioned among
- 9:14Speaker 2: the early Heisman contenders. And so that is the hope
- 9:18Speaker 2: that if he could stay healthy this year, that he
- 9:21Speaker 2: could be that level of quarterback again. He's experienced, he's
- 9:25Speaker 2: played a ton of college football. He's a running threat,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and with a healthy hand again, the hope is that
- 9:33Speaker 2: that'll be one of the pieces of the puzzle to
- 9:36Speaker 2: significantly improving that offense.
- 9:38Speaker 1: You have Isaiah Setania Baker receiver, and then and then
- 9:41Speaker 1: a couple of intriguing portal additions there. Trella Harris coming
- 9:46Speaker 1: in second team all a sec of Virginia and oh,
- 9:49Speaker 1: by the way, Parker Livingston, the former love Joy Leppard
- 9:53Speaker 1: as well as as well as long worn How what
- 9:56Speaker 1: have you been able to ascertain on how those guys,
- 9:59Speaker 1: because that's always the question t Row about guys acclimating
- 10:03Speaker 1: through the portal into the system and getting comfortable and
- 10:06Speaker 1: then productive.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, where everybody's always excited to see the new guys,
- 10:11Speaker 2: for sure. Trell Harris got deemed up in the spring
- 10:15Speaker 2: and was not fully healthy to start fall camp, but
- 10:20Speaker 2: he's back now and just starting to work his way
- 10:22Speaker 2: into the offense. He was a downfield playmaker for Virginia
- 10:26Speaker 2: and one of the better wideouts in the ACC last year,
- 10:30Speaker 2: and so there's hope that he'll help stretch the field.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And certainly the same for Parker Livingston. You know better
- 10:37Speaker 2: than I do what he brings to the field. But
- 10:40Speaker 2: the size and the speed is something that Oklahoma really
- 10:45Speaker 2: didn't have last year. They had Dion Burks, who's little.
- 10:48Speaker 2: They had Isaiah Setania who's little. They had a bunch
- 10:51Speaker 2: of mighty mites running around who were pretty good pass catchers,
- 10:54Speaker 2: but there weren't a lot of big targets and they
- 10:56Speaker 2: certainly have changed that. And it's more than Parker Livingston
- 11:00Speaker 2: and many choice is six foot five.
- 11:03Speaker 3: They brought in three tight ends.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Hayden Hansen from Florida is six 's eight, Rocky Beers
- 11:10Speaker 2: is six' five From Colorado. State by the, way that's
- 11:13Speaker 2: the brother Of Reagan. Beers if you're a women's basketball.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Fan they brought In tennessee tight end who's six foot,
- 11:20Speaker 2: Four Jack Van. Dorsler so they really try to not
- 11:26Speaker 2: just add targets For, matier but add some size for
- 11:30Speaker 2: him in the passing game as, well and So livingston
- 11:33Speaker 2: is one of the examples of. THAT i think if
- 11:37Speaker 2: if you made me guess, TODAY i think your three
- 11:39Speaker 2: starting receivers would Be Setania livingston And Trell. Harris the
- 11:44Speaker 2: young man Named Elijah thomas who's a sophomore who's having
- 11:47Speaker 2: a fabulous, fall AND i think he'll push for a
- 11:50Speaker 2: starting spot as, well and maybe a couple of other.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Guys but the plan is For livingston And Trell harris
- 11:57Speaker 2: to be major impact guys for them transferring in this.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Year IF i were to say to you THAT i
- 12:02Speaker 1: Envision Parker livingston as a, bigger little faster version Of
- 12:08Speaker 1: Drake stoops with that with that great past catching, ability
- 12:13Speaker 1: that wouldn't bother you too?
- 12:14Speaker 2: Much Would it wouldn't bother me at. All any comparison
- 12:18Speaker 2: To Drake stoops is met with a smile in these.
- 12:21Speaker 2: PARTS i, mean he is one of the favorite sons for.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Sure so if he's, bringing you, know that type of
- 12:28Speaker 2: game and toughness to the, table then he will quickly
- 12:32Speaker 2: endear himself To sooner.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Fans Talking sooner football here With oklahom's played By Playboys
- 12:37Speaker 1: Tobe rowland here for a couple More brando's here on
- 12:38Speaker 1: thirteen under the. Zone let me let me jump to
- 12:41Speaker 1: the defense and get your thoughts on. There obviously some
- 12:43Speaker 1: familiar names back like A Kip lewis and The bowens
- 12:47Speaker 1: and the secondary as, well and you, know H taylor
- 12:51Speaker 1: wand you had some guys some other guys who are
- 12:54Speaker 1: who are in there as. Well how do you assess
- 12:57Speaker 1: What oklahoma will bring to the? Party?
- 12:59Speaker 2: Defend, well the direction this interview has gone is exactly
- 13:05Speaker 2: the way everything has gone in the. Preseason nobody is
- 13:10Speaker 2: really talking about the. Defense all the questions are on
- 13:13Speaker 2: the offensive side of the, ball and justifiably, so there's
- 13:17Speaker 2: just kind of an expectation that they're gonna be good,
- 13:20Speaker 2: there AND i think they're gonna. Be they were really
- 13:22Speaker 2: good last year AND i think they'll be really good.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Again the secondary on paper looks to be as good
- 13:31Speaker 2: as they've had in a, while going into a season
- 13:34Speaker 2: with The bowen brothers In, Courtland gillery And Michael boganowski at.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Linebacker Kip lewis is back who's been a big time
- 13:41Speaker 2: playmaker for. Them Owen heineke won his court case and
- 13:45Speaker 2: got a fifth year and he's back and he made
- 13:47Speaker 2: a ton of plays for him last. Year they brought
- 13:50Speaker 2: In Cole, sullivan who at five interceptions At michigan last.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Year he'll join that linebacking corps and probably play a
- 13:57Speaker 2: lot of the cheatah, position and then up. Front this
- 14:01Speaker 2: is kind of lines up to be the year That
- 14:03Speaker 2: David stone becomes a.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Star we'll.
- 14:05Speaker 2: See he was a five star recruit out of high
- 14:07Speaker 2: school who's kind of been playing back up the last
- 14:10Speaker 2: couple of years and has made a lot of. Plays
- 14:12Speaker 2: but he's going to be a starter now Alongside jade
- 14:14Speaker 2: And jackson at defensive, tackle and they look really solid
- 14:19Speaker 2: across the. Board at the starting positions ARE nfl. Guys
- 14:24Speaker 2: the question is the, depth AND i don't think they're
- 14:28Speaker 2: as deep as they were a year ago when they
- 14:31Speaker 2: had a rotation of four really good, tackles and so
- 14:36Speaker 2: staying healthy defensively is gonna be important this. Year if
- 14:40Speaker 2: those eleven and maybe thirteen guys could stay, healthy this
- 14:45Speaker 2: has a chance to be one of the best defenses
- 14:47Speaker 2: in the. Country if they absorb a few, injuries that
- 14:51Speaker 2: could be a different.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Story i've taken it down the home stretch with all
- 14:56Speaker 1: the other guys by asking about the. Schedule a couple
- 14:59Speaker 1: of different, questions and one is a more generic macro
- 15:03Speaker 1: question about the nine game conference schedule on your overview on.
- 15:07Speaker 1: That the other thing is looking at The sooner. Schedule
- 15:10Speaker 1: in some ways it almost matches The texas schedule, because
- 15:15Speaker 1: unlike several of the other, schools Both texas And oklahoma
- 15:18Speaker 1: start with the three non conference. Games both play a high, caliber,
- 15:22Speaker 1: profile high Profile Big ten. School you'll be up in
- 15:25Speaker 1: Ann arbor at The Big house for The michigan. Game
- 15:27Speaker 1: Ohio state will be here on the same. Day both
- 15:30Speaker 1: play institutions in The university Of texas system long runs OF.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Utsa The sooners HAVE, utep and then you also Have
- 15:37Speaker 1: New mexico And texas Has Texas. State So The michigan
- 15:41Speaker 1: game is obviously a huge bell, weather it's a big,
- 15:45Speaker 1: thing but yet it is still non, conference AND i
- 15:47Speaker 1: would imagine that Coach venables looks at that in a
- 15:50Speaker 1: similar way to the way That sark approaches The Ohio state. Game,
- 15:53Speaker 1: absolutely you want to win, it and it gives you
- 15:55Speaker 1: a leg up on your direction and path headed toward the.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Playoffs but if you, look, oh it's not. Suicidal it
- 16:01Speaker 1: Doesn't it doesn't kill. You just playing the game certainly.
- 16:04Speaker 1: HELPS i think it's the trump.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Card you, know if you win a big non conference,
- 16:11Speaker 2: game when you add it all up at the end
- 16:14Speaker 2: of the, year maybe that is what gets you.
- 16:17Speaker 3: In and that's what happened last year FOR.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Ou they won that non conference game Against michigan and
- 16:24Speaker 2: then went ten and, two and that was good enough
- 16:27Speaker 2: to get. In, no it's not the end of the
- 16:30Speaker 2: world if you lose, it but it puts a lot
- 16:32Speaker 2: of pressure on. You the story of THE ou schedule
- 16:36Speaker 2: is the first five games this. YEAR i, mean they they,
- 16:39Speaker 2: have Like, texas one of the tougher schedules in the,
- 16:42Speaker 2: country but it's so front. Loaded At michigan In week,
- 16:45Speaker 2: two At georgia to OPEN sec play and then the
- 16:50Speaker 2: game after that Is texas In.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Dallas so three.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Of their first five games are against teams, ranked and
- 16:59Speaker 2: two of those in the top, five and the two
- 17:02Speaker 2: top teams in the PRESEASON Sec pole and none of
- 17:05Speaker 2: them are In. Norman so the Thing i've been saying
- 17:10Speaker 2: is if they could win two of those, three AND
- 17:14Speaker 2: i don't know if it matters which, two but if
- 17:16Speaker 2: they could win two of those, three they put themselves
- 17:20Speaker 2: in a really great position for the back half of
- 17:23Speaker 2: the schedule to be a playoff. Team not that it gets,
- 17:26Speaker 2: easy there's still some land mines in. There they got
- 17:29Speaker 2: to go To, florida they Got, TEXAS a AND m And.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Norman but the.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Confidence you would have coming out of that first half
- 17:37Speaker 2: of the schedule if you could win two of those
- 17:39Speaker 2: three would be a pretty good. Catapult so but, BOY i,
- 17:45Speaker 2: mean it's they're gonna be underdogs at least right now
- 17:48Speaker 2: in all three of those. Games they're a slight underdog At,
- 17:51Speaker 2: michigan they'll be an underdog In, athens and they're an
- 17:54Speaker 2: underdog right now against The. Longhorns so they've got to
- 17:58Speaker 2: survive the first half of the, schedule and if they,
- 18:00Speaker 2: do then potentially they could be a playoff.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Team, again it's almost. Uncanny holly's schedules great because text
- 18:07Speaker 1: on the same day that The sooners are In, Athens
- 18:09Speaker 1: Long wornes are In, knoxville and then both have the
- 18:12Speaker 1: open date and then they face one. Another SO i
- 18:13Speaker 1: think it's, very very. Similar how do you feel overall
- 18:16Speaker 1: about the nine game conference?
- 18:18Speaker 2: Schedule you, KNOW i think of things as as a
- 18:21Speaker 2: fan and for, myself LIKE i love. It from an entertainment,
- 18:26Speaker 2: value good on, them you, KNOW i understand if you're
- 18:30Speaker 2: trying to do the math about trying to make a
- 18:33Speaker 2: playoff and absorbing losses and all that kind of, stuff
- 18:36Speaker 2: maybe it makes it harder and we'll figure that out
- 18:39Speaker 2: as we. Go maybe they're going to expand the playoff
- 18:41Speaker 2: and hopefully all the conferences will be on an even.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Footing but from an entertainment, aspect the MORE sec games the.
