- 0:45Speaker 2: Christ hearing buck picks over here.
- 0:47Speaker 1: He's looking at that big buck picks. Give us a
- 0:48Speaker 1: quick report, Yannis. Jannis is monitoring. This is not what
- 0:51Speaker 1: we're here to talk about, but Jannis is monitoring his
- 0:55Speaker 1: Wisconsin family.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Little place that's right, got twenty cameras set out and uh,
- 1:04Speaker 3: it's interesting, man.
- 1:05Speaker 2: These bucks.
- 1:06Speaker 3: It's like they literally crawl into a hole for a while,
- 1:08Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, there'll be a day
- 1:10Speaker 3: or two period and all three or four of the
- 1:14Speaker 3: I'm calling mature bucks there pop out, show themselves and
- 1:17Speaker 3: then crawl into a hole again, and I won't see
- 1:19Speaker 3: them for two weeks. But yeah, I've got three to
- 1:21Speaker 3: four that I'm very excited about. They're not giants, I
- 1:25Speaker 3: think in the white tail world. But if any one
- 1:28Speaker 3: of them walks underneath my stand in November, then I'll
- 1:30Speaker 3: be trying to take a shot.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Twenty cameras.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they're all the They're all the molt Tree Edge.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I believe that's the name of the model, right. All cellular.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It's great when you live in Montana and you hunt
- 1:47Speaker 3: a spot in Wisconsin.
- 1:49Speaker 1: That's fun.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Oh, the cellular.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm addicted by far way more to that than
- 1:55Speaker 3: any other little thing on my telephone, Instagram.
- 2:00Speaker 1: More than it's healthier too, is it man harder than
- 2:08Speaker 1: everything else? I'm not hacking on Instagram sayings healthier than
- 2:10Speaker 1: anything else on your phone because like, at least it's
- 2:13Speaker 1: like a sort of interaction with some kind of unknown
- 2:16Speaker 1: thing that's not man made. I just hung two and
- 2:19Speaker 1: then I didn't bring my little security boxes. And one
- 2:24Speaker 1: is so funny because like I get a picture of
- 2:26Speaker 1: a Martin I hung just like right up my at
- 2:30Speaker 1: our shack in Alaska. Uh, and I'm hanging it and
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm talking to my buddy Jeremy Romero, and he's like, man,
- 2:38Speaker 1: those bears, you know, and I've had it happen before.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It they just tear him up. But it's funny. So
- 2:42Speaker 1: I hang it up, like right at Danny's cabin and
- 2:47Speaker 1: get a Martin and then get a bear coming at
- 2:52Speaker 1: the camera. In the next picture, the camera's pointing up
- 2:56Speaker 1: into the trees, and the next picture, the camera is
- 2:58Speaker 1: pointing straight down to the slow bushes and that's where
- 3:02Speaker 1: it sits. Now, had you just had you just hung
- 3:05Speaker 1: that camera, No, it was like within twenty four hours.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I have a theory about bears and a trail. There's
- 3:12Speaker 1: like a trail we use and they use, and you're
- 3:14Speaker 1: just like, the hell's that?
- 3:16Speaker 4: But I mean I hang a lot of cameras in
- 3:18Speaker 4: bear country, and it's like, if they don't knock that
- 3:22Speaker 4: sucker down within like seventy two hours, to leave it alone.
- 3:25Speaker 4: But if it's fresh and it's so you always drop
- 3:28Speaker 4: them off, then you leave. Then you know it used
- 3:29Speaker 4: to be you'd come back six weeks later and you're like, oh,
- 3:32Speaker 4: you know, like I have no pictures because my camera's
- 3:34Speaker 4: laying on the ground. But it seems like that fresh
- 3:37Speaker 4: hand scent, like fresh messing with it is really like
- 3:40Speaker 4: the trigger that gets them to just chew them up
- 3:42Speaker 4: and bat them around.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think that's what he's queuing in on.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I don't know, but I mean, it's so consistent for
- 3:47Speaker 4: me where if a bear's gonna mess with a camera,
- 3:50Speaker 4: it's right away every time.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But if i'd have hung a hatchet in that tree,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I don't think you'd a bit that hatchet.
- 3:57Speaker 5: I've always heard it was the petroleum in the place,
- 4:00Speaker 5: stick and stuff that attracted them to it.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I don't know, man, I just know that it has
- 4:05Speaker 4: been so consistent for me. If I get one up
- 4:07Speaker 4: and they leave it alone and a bear doesn't walk
- 4:09Speaker 4: by and it's been out for a week or two,
- 4:11Speaker 4: that camera's not going to get knocked down. But when
- 4:13Speaker 4: I put them up that first bear that walked, like
- 4:16Speaker 4: you said, I have so many pictures of like the
- 4:18Speaker 4: inside of a bear's mouth or those ears like right
- 4:21Speaker 4: up to it, and they always knock it sideways or
- 4:24Speaker 4: down or tear it off.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And move on. But if it's been there a little while.
- 4:28Speaker 4: And I used to even when I used to bear hunt,
- 4:30Speaker 4: I would try to be really meticulous about sant like
- 4:32Speaker 4: wear gloves because you know, if you mess with bait,
- 4:35Speaker 4: you touch a camera. Yeah, it's over a lot of times.
- 4:38Speaker 4: And even then doing everything right. It was like if
- 4:41Speaker 4: they came in right away and they messed with it,
- 4:44Speaker 4: that that was the window when they were going to
- 4:46Speaker 4: mess with it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I ended on I got comment about that. I ended
- 4:51Speaker 1: on Seth Seth Morris and then Hansi Dirschmeyers. Here have
- 4:55Speaker 1: you been on the podcast.
- 4:56Speaker 6: For Yeah, like five years ago you've done Yeah, five
- 5:01Speaker 6: years ago?
- 5:01Speaker 2: What did you talk about five years ago?
- 5:03Speaker 6: It was like Ramsey Russell and yeah, we're talking about
- 5:07Speaker 6: duck hunting.
- 5:07Speaker 1: For a little bit, and you liked to hunt ducks.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Oh he was the guy boys call them. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Hanse's on our Hanse's on our production team and as
- 5:18Speaker 1: an editor at his video content for us. We're gonna
- 5:20Speaker 1: talk a bunch about video content a minute. I got
- 5:22Speaker 1: to return to something that I was shocked about. You
- 5:24Speaker 1: guys might know about this North Carolina. I was just
- 5:28Speaker 1: down in North Carolina. You can't use processed foods on
- 5:35Speaker 1: bear baits. They're having too much tooth decay on bears.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You're allowed to bate bears way outside of the season
- 5:42Speaker 1: because they have a long dog running season, and you're
- 5:44Speaker 1: allowed to bate bears to lure into trained dogs. And
- 5:54Speaker 1: I was talking to a game war and he's showing
- 5:56Speaker 1: me pictures of tooth decay, a bad tooth decay on bears,
- 6:03Speaker 1: skulls coming in, huge cavities in their teeth from all
- 6:08Speaker 1: of the like sugar products, really candy donuts, jolly rancher, syrup,
- 6:15Speaker 1: whatever the hell that on their stuff. And he said,
- 6:20Speaker 1: in the spring, I spend most of my time not
- 6:23Speaker 1: working illegal bait stations. He spends most of his time
- 6:27Speaker 1: working illegal bait. Wow, So what are they supposed to use?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Natural foods? Corn? No processed foods. It's like it's like
- 6:39Speaker 1: parents in America right now are like fighting processed foods
- 6:44Speaker 1: in their children's diet. And apparently they've brought that fight
- 6:48Speaker 1: to the bears of North Carolina, of bears on processed
- 6:54Speaker 1: food and they've got bears like it's to be in
- 7:00Speaker 1: an eastern deciduous forest where everything's real thick and there's
- 7:04Speaker 1: just bears around. Oh, there's a bear, there's barnet guy's field,
- 7:08Speaker 1: there's bear walk across the road, big ones. Yeah, I
- 7:11Speaker 1: didn't know that that even was a thing. I mean,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I knew there was a lot of bears, but I
- 7:15Speaker 1: know there's so many bears that it's just like there's one,
- 7:16Speaker 1: there's one, there's one, there's a bear track.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Well it's become a thing. It wasn't always like that.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And people got them all hopped up on donuts.
- 7:25Speaker 7: I wonder what a bear and a lot of donut
- 7:27Speaker 7: and jolly ranchesterrup tastes like.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah, now.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Alaskan blueberry bears, right, I just wonder, yeah, up.
- 7:43Speaker 1: His fat, his fast, the color a green apple, jolly
- 7:46Speaker 1: rancher like a star bears listen, and I bring this up.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I'm not I have not heavily investigated this. I I
- 7:53Speaker 1: I interacted with one individual on this subject. I'm conveying
- 7:57Speaker 1: you to you information delivered to me in one conversation
- 8:01Speaker 1: with one individual who was a wildlife professional. But I
- 8:06Speaker 1: didn't go talk to like there's probably someone out there
- 8:09Speaker 1: who's like ready to rip like the speaker out of
- 8:13Speaker 1: his car, because he's like, that's not true, and if
- 8:15Speaker 1: that's you, how that's not true. But he was showing
- 8:21Speaker 1: me multiple bears with like cavities that you could see
- 8:25Speaker 1: on a cell phone photo. Who are who are getting
- 8:30Speaker 1: a long term a lot of their diet from processed food,
- 8:34Speaker 1: so they are they allowed the bait for a particularly
- 8:37Speaker 1: long time because like in Arkansas, it's because they have
- 8:39Speaker 1: the dog training. Okay, so they have a big training season.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You're allowed to bait for dog training. So there's there
- 8:45Speaker 1: if they're I don't I don't remember if there's no
- 8:48Speaker 1: on off switch, or if it's just a very a
- 8:51Speaker 1: very generous period of time that you're allowed to do it.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But he works illegal bait.
- 9:00Speaker 5: It looks to me like if you had that many bears,
- 9:02Speaker 5: you wouldn't have to get them centralized trained the dogs
- 9:05Speaker 5: freaking man, did you do that on like property when
- 9:09Speaker 5: you're training?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Oh, like you can still train dogs off the bait. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I can't comment on it, you know what that might be.
- 9:17Speaker 4: So in Wisconsin where they run bears where we or
- 9:20Speaker 4: they run dogs on bears where we hunt, they will
- 9:23Speaker 4: start at a bait site because they can bait the
- 9:25Speaker 4: bears in and they can check a camera and be like,
- 9:27Speaker 4: there was a big boar here doing it right.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So that's why they're doing that.
- 9:32Speaker 4: But so they're even in the off season when you
- 9:34Speaker 4: would think they wouldn't need to that. You could just
- 9:35Speaker 4: go find a bear track to run them. They're probably
- 9:38Speaker 4: running through the real like dress rehearsal for the hunt,
- 9:41Speaker 4: you know.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Then you give them a little bears toothbrushes flooridem,
- 9:50Speaker 1: that'd be like the That's probably like what their proposal
- 9:53Speaker 1: would be, like, Okay, how about we just add fluoride?
- 9:55Speaker 5: Yeah, to the swamps pour Out of four, out of
- 9:57Speaker 5: five bear hunters approved, there's always that one.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Okay, Hans, are you ready? Yeah? Okay, Hansei's here because
- 10:07Speaker 1: he's working on Hans's working on six episodes for us
- 10:10Speaker 1: that are called me Eater rough Cuts, six hunting Trips,
- 10:14Speaker 1: yep six hunts. Some of the people on some of
- 10:16Speaker 1: these hunts. Let me think how many of these Clay's
- 10:20Speaker 1: not here, Tony's here, Seth's here, Yanni's here. Those guys
- 10:25Speaker 1: aren't and Seth's here. You're working on a project about
- 10:32Speaker 1: hunting Alaska moose Ye with me and Clay Nukeom. You're
- 10:35Speaker 1: working on a project about hunting Oklahoma white Tails of
- 10:38Speaker 1: me and Tony. You're working on a project about trapping
- 10:42Speaker 1: in Montana me and Seth. You're working on a project
- 10:45Speaker 1: about hunting COO's Dear in Mexico, Me and Yanni. You're
- 10:48Speaker 1: working on a project about hunting Mewle's in Montana with
- 10:51Speaker 1: me and Garrett, my friend Ronnie Collins, the spear fisherman.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And then you're working on Texas whitetail me and Seth.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Yeah, and Dave's with DSD.
- 11:01Speaker 1: On Dave Smith. Yeah. Yeah, Okay, So tell me the challenges.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Tell me the challenges of making something about trapping. Okay,
- 11:09Speaker 1: where do we are all the action? As my wife
- 11:11Speaker 1: points out, she doesn't like it because all the action
- 11:13Speaker 1: happens out of sight. Yeah, it's like you're not even there.
- 11:17Speaker 2: It's true.
- 11:18Speaker 1: She thinks it's cheating because you're not there.
- 11:23Speaker 6: No, it's it's true. I'm like it creates a challenge
- 11:25Speaker 6: in that it's like not all in one day, right,
- 11:27Speaker 6: there's no like there's no like through line arc natural
- 11:30Speaker 6: progression of like we climbed the mountain and then we
- 11:34Speaker 6: shot a ball and then we packed it down. It's
- 11:36Speaker 6: it's like, well, no, we we had to set the
- 11:38Speaker 6: traps first, and then we had to like give the
- 11:40Speaker 6: traps chance to work. And so you come you're coming
- 11:43Speaker 6: back days later and you're going to a whole bunch
- 11:44Speaker 6: of different locations, right, and and there's like there's there's
- 11:48Speaker 6: multiple species involved here too, right, So I mean you've
- 11:51Speaker 6: got an entirely different selection of information for each trap
- 11:56Speaker 6: different amounts of time. And now it creates kind of
- 11:59Speaker 6: a possibility I think from a from a story perspective
- 12:03Speaker 6: on like going to different places and and and learning
- 12:07Speaker 6: new things and uh sign reading. And it's gonna be
- 12:11Speaker 6: a heavily graphic treated episode because of that. So it's
- 12:15Speaker 6: gonna be something that we've we've not done before in
- 12:17Speaker 6: that regard.
- 12:18Speaker 1: No, you know, another interesting thing about trying to film
- 12:22Speaker 1: something about trapping, or in your position edit something about
- 12:25Speaker 1: trapping is uh, not only is a lot the action
- 12:29Speaker 1: occurring when you're not there in this case, the actions
- 12:33Speaker 1: occurring underneath the ice, yeah, or like sort of underground,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and when you make the set, it's obscured by dirt. Yeah,
- 12:42Speaker 1: so there's nothing clear about anything.
- 12:44Speaker 6: No, No, that's where that's like, that's where the graphics
- 12:49Speaker 6: come in.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You wouldn't know it, but that's a set. Yeah, it
- 12:51Speaker 1: just looks like dirt. Yeah. And then now we're gonna leave,
- 12:55Speaker 1: yeah and see what happens, you.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Know, there's there's a section in here where there, you know,
- 13:00Speaker 6: Seth and and Steve are talking about uh, bubble lines
- 13:03Speaker 6: in the ice, and it's like it's all this intricate detail,
- 13:07Speaker 6: but we can't see any of it. It's like, well,
- 13:09Speaker 6: in theory that's under there, like they're they're there.
- 13:12Speaker 7: You know.
- 13:12Speaker 6: And and I won't say whether or not. I guess
- 13:15Speaker 6: you guys are vindicated on your information, but yeah, it's.
- 13:18Speaker 1: In that case we were vindicating. Yeah, I want to
- 13:21Speaker 1: tell you in NAK that's one of those things where, uh,
- 13:27Speaker 1: the the bubbles don't lie. Yeah, that amount of bubbles
- 13:31Speaker 1: don't lie. Most things that are made about trapping, and
- 13:35Speaker 1: I consume like a good deal of this stuff. Most
- 13:37Speaker 1: things that are made about trap and are instructional. Yeah, right,
- 13:40Speaker 1: it's an instructional intensive Uh, it's an instructional intensive genre. Yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 1: and you're trying to make something that's sort of uh
- 13:51Speaker 1: less instructional, sort of like entertainment.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 6: And and in our case, like we have you and Seth,
- 13:59Speaker 6: we have a long history of trapping, and so over
- 14:02Speaker 6: time we're we're showing some inserts of like photographs of
- 14:05Speaker 6: of you, like kind of set allah a Wes Anderson
- 14:09Speaker 6: kind of feel stylized. Yeah, and it I mean, so
- 14:14Speaker 6: so there's some stylized elements in here that just that
- 14:17Speaker 6: just give just a new and different treatment to this.
- 14:20Speaker 6: And and yeah, it'll still be instructional, I think, as
- 14:22Speaker 6: it should be. I mean, it's it's uh, there's a
- 14:27Speaker 6: lot to learn about it.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Do you feel that that's the first one of these
- 14:30Speaker 1: that we'll release?
- 14:31Speaker 6: Oh boy, We're we're kind of in like different stages
- 14:35Speaker 6: of production right now.
- 14:36Speaker 2: So like.
- 14:38Speaker 6: Alaska Moose with with Clay is like very I think,
- 14:42Speaker 6: very far along, and then Oklahoma White Tail with Tony
- 14:45Speaker 6: is pretty far along too. And and as far as
- 14:49Speaker 6: like as far as which one's gonna come out first,
- 14:51Speaker 6: I I just don't. I just don't know. I think
- 14:53Speaker 6: I think probably the the one that we're we're still
- 14:56Speaker 6: in the most production on is that the Texas Bucks
- 14:59Speaker 6: with with You and Seth.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I mean, that's got the farthest to go.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it's farthest to go really, but but we
- 15:05Speaker 6: have we.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Have some really we like delivered gold I know you did. Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 1: how much?
- 15:10Speaker 7: How many how many buck attacks on the decoys did
- 15:13Speaker 7: we see?
- 15:14Speaker 6: Well, it's also it's also called Steven Seth Rattle in
- 15:16Speaker 6: twenty two bucks. Yeah, it's I mean, that's that's the
- 15:20Speaker 6: alter ego of the episode.
- 15:22Speaker 1: They're Likeruly.
- 15:23Speaker 6: It's really cool footage. It's amazing footage. Yeah, yeah, no,
- 15:27Speaker 6: it's it is.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It is a well, let's no, but I don't want
- 15:32Speaker 1: to move into that one yet, okay, copy. I want
- 15:34Speaker 1: to move into working on working on from an editor's perspective.
- 15:39Speaker 1: And this is the listening because I asked you something
- 15:41Speaker 1: very specific. Yeah, so you're cutting Oklahoma White Tail Hunt
- 15:45Speaker 1: with me and Tony Peterson. I want you to just
- 15:48Speaker 1: this is going to be awkward, Okay. I want you
- 15:50Speaker 1: to look Tony Peterson in the eye and tell him
- 15:52Speaker 1: about what it's like to interact with his hosting as
- 15:55Speaker 1: an editor.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Tony's already like he's already like on edge, because when
- 16:01Speaker 6: we were filming this, he was like Hans Hen He's
- 16:05Speaker 6: got like he's got like really intense eyes. I keep
- 16:07Speaker 6: looking at him in the camera and uh so, so okay,
- 16:12Speaker 6: so how is it. How is it to interact with
- 16:14Speaker 6: Tony as a host as an editor, as an editor?
- 16:17Speaker 1: Are you like, God, this guy brings it?
- 16:25Speaker 6: Uh No, it's it's Uh, okay, where where do I
- 16:28Speaker 6: start with this?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Where do I tell you what it's like? I've told
- 16:32Speaker 1: I've told his story a lot of times. It's like
- 16:33Speaker 1: with Tony, Tony is a very intense person hunt with
- 16:36Speaker 1: do you really in a good way? He there to
- 16:42Speaker 1: not get nothing? Yeah, well that's true. Yeah, I don't
- 16:46Speaker 1: like on film tags. No.
- 16:49Speaker 6: I think on that particular episode, like we've got it's
- 16:52Speaker 6: kind of a cool piece because we have we have
- 16:54Speaker 6: two different stories, which is not the only place that
- 16:57Speaker 6: that's happening in rough cuts, but we have we have
- 17:00Speaker 6: you guys on the hunt itself, which is a cool story.
- 17:03Speaker 6: There's like some some drama moments and and things like
- 17:05Speaker 6: that doesn't like all go to plan, which always makes
- 17:09Speaker 6: for great TV. But on top of that, we're coming
- 17:12Speaker 6: back to Tony like in a gym environment, talking about
- 17:17Speaker 6: the logistics and the tactics of the hunt. So we
- 17:20Speaker 6: get like two different slices of Tony a little bit.
- 17:23Speaker 1: In the gym environment. Did you debate between going with
- 17:27Speaker 1: the like suit like a retired athlete dude, or did
- 17:30Speaker 1: you do you want to know how much I want
- 17:32Speaker 1: to go like an old retired quarterback? Do I want
- 17:35Speaker 1: to go like actively.
- 17:36Speaker 6: I got like a sweater vest, like an old checked
- 17:39Speaker 6: sweater vest kind of thing.
- 17:40Speaker 4: But so you want to know how much information I
- 17:43Speaker 4: got before filming that, Sam Bates sent me an email
- 17:46Speaker 4: and she said, Hey, we need you to come out
- 17:47Speaker 4: to Montana and shoot one scene for your Oklahoma show,
- 17:51Speaker 4: and we need you to look like a pe Coach
- 17:54Speaker 4: from the nineteen eighties like Taylor, right. And I really
- 18:01Speaker 4: didn't know until right before the shoot kind of what
- 18:05Speaker 4: the idea was behind this. And then when I showed up,
- 18:09Speaker 4: you know, we went out to the YMCA and set up,
- 18:11Speaker 4: and HANSI had a whole idea in his head.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And let me tell you something.
- 18:15Speaker 4: They ran me through the ringer because I had to
- 18:19Speaker 4: do chin ups and talk like talk like I had
- 18:24Speaker 4: to think on my feet and talk while do actively
- 18:26Speaker 4: doing chin ups or like curling dumbbells and doing stuff.
- 18:32Speaker 4: And after that shoot, because like I went into that shoot,
- 18:35Speaker 4: I like, I go to the gym all the time.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I'm fine.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Like after that shoot, I was so sore because you
- 18:40Speaker 4: never did talking well. It was like fifty reps in
- 18:44Speaker 4: a row because they're like, well, we need another take,
- 18:47Speaker 4: and you're like, well, this take is another six chin
- 18:50Speaker 4: ups or you know, like imagine if you were and
- 18:53Speaker 4: it like imagine if we just handed you like a
- 18:55Speaker 4: twenty five pound dumbell. You could curl that, no problem, right,
- 18:59Speaker 4: But if you had to hawk for like forty five
- 19:01Speaker 4: seconds or a minute while curling NonStop like and kind
- 19:04Speaker 4: of exaggerating it, you'd be like, well, I just did
- 19:07Speaker 4: you know fifty three reps in a very short amount
- 19:11Speaker 4: of time. And so HANSI put me through the wringer.
- 19:14Speaker 4: And I think Hillary was loving it too. She said,
- 19:16Speaker 4: let's have him do more stuff like that.
- 19:18Speaker 1: That's great. So it was a it was the I've
- 19:21Speaker 1: never done a shoot like that some of the but
- 19:24Speaker 1: it's got to be good that we got a bunch
- 19:26Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Oh yeah, definitely definitely, Like dear.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Do you need I need? So, I mean some of
- 19:33Speaker 2: the some of the good thing.
- 19:34Speaker 1: We killed everyone that walked by us. Yeah, there's the two.
- 19:38Speaker 1: This is the thing and and uh that we used
- 19:40Speaker 1: to struggle with is the too much of a good
- 19:42Speaker 1: thing problem.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Yeah, that's exactly it. That's exactly it. And that's what
- 19:46Speaker 6: happened with we won't go into it yet, but Texas Bucks.
- 19:48Speaker 6: But but yeah, I mean.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Steve's ready to go into it too many bucks.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I'm not ready.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I'm on open. Yeah.
- 19:56Speaker 6: No, I think I think from like a from a
- 19:58Speaker 6: story element absolutely so like too much of a good thing,
- 20:01Speaker 6: and we're just trying to do something that's different. I
- 20:03Speaker 6: think one of the elements of the whole series was that,
- 20:07Speaker 6: you know, we had we had some limitations as far
- 20:09Speaker 6: as like cameras, as far as how many cameras were
- 20:13Speaker 6: on these shoots, and with with not having as many
- 20:16Speaker 6: as like a mediatter episode of the past, we didn't
- 20:19Speaker 6: have some like long lens footage, so we so we
- 20:21Speaker 6: didn't have those those those same moments captured in great
- 20:24Speaker 6: detail quite to the extent that you know we'd love.
- 20:28Speaker 6: But it also offered another opportunity to create something different entirely,
- 20:32Speaker 6: and that's and that's where we came up with these
- 20:34Speaker 6: you know, inter cutting these scenes like with with Tony
- 20:37Speaker 6: and uh and on this one is kind of like
- 20:39Speaker 6: it's it's predicated on like there's a scene in Lockstock
- 20:42Speaker 6: and Two Smoking Barrels Guy Ritchie film where they like
- 20:45Speaker 6: open up a boiling pot of water and you see
- 20:48Speaker 6: the cameras underneath this bottle of this pot of water
- 20:52Speaker 6: and he chucks in a bunch of vegetables. But he's
- 20:54Speaker 6: talking and you can hear the talking, and you see
- 20:56Speaker 6: this site. And that's kind of similar to how we
- 20:58Speaker 6: pitched some of these scenes with Tony, like on a
- 21:00Speaker 6: pull up bar coming into frame, which was you know,
- 21:03Speaker 6: probably uh hard, but like fun to be like, no,
- 21:07Speaker 6: I'll do that again, uh, you know, a little more exercise.
- 21:10Speaker 6: But but I think it. I think it worked. I
- 21:12Speaker 6: think it was cool.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And he's a good actor.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, he worked.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, we put him.
- 21:17Speaker 6: We put him to work either way, whether.
- 21:20Speaker 4: You know where I find my like source of inspiration
- 21:24Speaker 4: for that. I just always think I just got to
- 21:26Speaker 4: do a better job than Kenyon. I gotta imagine Kenyon
- 21:30Speaker 4: in this situation, and how would I just do a
- 21:32Speaker 4: little better job.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Well, he's thinned up so much because all the running,
- 21:36Speaker 1: I know.
- 21:37Speaker 3: You know, I think he hasn't. I asked him about that.
- 21:39Speaker 3: He looks it, but he hasn't. I think he's lost
- 21:42Speaker 3: it in his face a little bit.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Shave his mustache that strolls me off. Man, I've been
- 21:48Speaker 1: avoiding my neighbors. I heard he cut his mustache off. No,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I avoiding him because I'm like he's gonna look so different,
- 22:00Speaker 1: forget his name, and gave himself a mohawk. No, there's
- 22:07Speaker 1: a whole story about his mohawk. He was on like
- 22:10Speaker 1: his he's a high school teacher and an artist.
- 22:15Speaker 2: But that's it.
- 22:16Speaker 8: We don't need any more.
- 22:17Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 22:18Speaker 1: It was this thing for this thing for the high school.
- 22:21Speaker 1: He was doing this thing with the high school kids,
- 22:23Speaker 1: like this dodgeball tournament. So one thing led to do
- 22:26Speaker 1: another and he had to get like a mohawk, and
- 22:29Speaker 1: I was like, that's an interesting choice. He goes, this
- 22:30Speaker 1: is a whole story behind this mohawk, and then I
- 22:32Speaker 1: heard now his mustache. He's always since the dad I
- 22:34Speaker 1: met him. He's my like one of my best buddies.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Since the day I met him, he's always had various
- 22:39Speaker 1: like configurations of crazy ass mustaches. My wife's like they're
- 22:43Speaker 1: all gone, all the mustaches.
- 22:45Speaker 4: You don't He recognized something, So you want to know
- 22:49Speaker 4: how iconic Marx mustache was in my life, even my kids.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Last night, my kids are out Yellowstone right now, I'm
- 22:57Speaker 4: gonna meet up with him a little bit, and I
- 22:58Speaker 4: talked to him last night and they when I told
- 22:59Speaker 4: me about the they saw on all this stuff, and
- 23:01Speaker 4: I was in our room and I'm rooming with Mark,
- 23:03Speaker 4: and I made a joke so Mark could hear it,
- 23:06Speaker 4: kind of like when I was talking to one of
- 23:07Speaker 4: my daughters and she goes, are you rooming with mustache?
- 23:11Speaker 4: There's multiple people in it. This is like how deer
- 23:14Speaker 4: get derivative names, right, Like you talk about this buck
- 23:17Speaker 4: and you're like that, I saw that ten pointer that
- 23:19Speaker 4: had the dropper, and then over time he just becomes dropper,
- 23:22Speaker 4: you know what I mean? So Mark, like people will
- 23:24Speaker 4: be like, is that the guy with the mustache and
- 23:26Speaker 4: eventually he just becomes mustache mustache man?
- 23:28Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well when you want to talk about.
- 23:32Speaker 6: Next which episode?
- 23:34Speaker 7: No?
- 23:34Speaker 1: Oh, man, let's do Moose.
- 23:37Speaker 2: You got it?
- 23:38Speaker 1: That's well, what do you want to talk about?
- 23:41Speaker 6: I love I love the Moose episode. I think it's
- 23:44Speaker 6: really cool.
- 23:44Speaker 1: You like that one?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 23:45Speaker 5: I do?
- 23:46Speaker 1: You know why I like it?
- 23:47Speaker 6: I have an idea?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 23:50Speaker 7: Was your moose bigger than Klay's moose?
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yes, guess yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 6: It's it's a great story, and it's like more of
- 24:00Speaker 6: a day by day approach versus some of these others.
- 24:03Speaker 6: So we have like day markers spread throughout, and there's
- 24:07Speaker 6: been some like back and forth on voiceover narration or not,
- 24:11Speaker 6: and I like, I'm leaning toward narration right now, whatsoever, whatsoever,
- 24:17Speaker 6: because the story really speaks for itself. I think we
- 24:20Speaker 6: like allowing allowing it to breathe, you know.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Yeah cool if if someone out there is an aspiring
- 24:27Speaker 1: outdoor filmmaker or aspiring outdoor TV show maker. The way
- 24:35Speaker 1: you want to set everything up is that you try,
- 24:38Speaker 1: you go do something, you try really hard, and it
- 24:40Speaker 1: doesn't work, and then all of a sudden it works.
- 24:43Speaker 6: The hero story I mean, yeah, yeah, not that you
- 24:46Speaker 6: rattle in.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Not that it works every time the first time.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Here comes the book and comes every time. Yeah, that's great.
- 24:57Speaker 1: That's a great lived experience. Yeah, it's better if you
- 25:02Speaker 1: just can't get anything to come in. Yeah, and you
- 25:05Speaker 1: do it for days and then finally one comes in
- 25:08Speaker 1: and you get it.
- 25:09Speaker 6: That's the payoff. Yeah, that's what draft to build up
- 25:12Speaker 6: that payoff.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Editors don't want you to have a good hunt. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 1: they want you to have a nail biting. The editor
- 25:19Speaker 1: wants you to have a nail biting horrible time. Yeah. Yeah,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and then.
- 25:27Speaker 2: But that's a metaphor for life, isn't it.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh yeah. They don't make movies about like a
- 25:32Speaker 1: sports team, like sports movies. You know, they don't make
- 25:36Speaker 1: it that the movie starts and they're in they're champions. Yeah,
- 25:42Speaker 1: dog story.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Everyone loves their richest riches.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Texas White was like we were born millionaires.
- 26:01Speaker 1: So yeah, tell about your approach with the moose one.
- 26:03Speaker 1: It's quiet.
- 26:04Speaker 6: It is quiet, Yeah, relatively speaking. It's not like it's
- 26:07Speaker 6: not like a lot of chugging music like driving the
- 26:11Speaker 6: whole thing. It's a lot of it's a lot of
- 26:13Speaker 6: moments between you and Clay talking, giving each other crap,
- 26:19Speaker 6: and and and the logistics of it and and uh
- 26:23Speaker 6: little details and and scenery. I mean that's and that's
- 26:27Speaker 6: that's it. But it's it's uh it. I think it
- 26:29Speaker 6: functions in that way because this is a story that's
- 26:32Speaker 6: been like a long time in the making. You've been
- 26:33Speaker 6: on how many nine hunts for this or how many.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Times have I've done that sort of thing?
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 26:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, A bunch for just generally hunting moose in Alaska,
- 26:43Speaker 1: A bunch honey moose that way in Alaska, maybe four
- 26:46Speaker 1: or five times.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Okay, And it gives us a perspective on that that,
- 26:51Speaker 6: Like the beginning, you talk about the several different types
- 26:55Speaker 6: of hunt that that can be in Alaska, and so
- 26:58Speaker 6: we I think we really get a like a very
- 27:00Speaker 6: visceral experience of what that fly in type of hunt is.
- 27:05Speaker 6: And it can be grueling.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I mean, I try to explain in it there's we've
- 27:11Speaker 1: filmed all these kinds I think, yeah, we have over
- 27:13Speaker 1: the years. Yeah, I try to break up something that's
- 27:16Speaker 1: kind of complicated into three buckets. With moose hunting, float
- 27:19Speaker 1: hunts where you're like, hunt float down the river, hunt
- 27:23Speaker 1: float down the river, hunt float down the river. It's
- 27:25Speaker 1: very dynamic. You're eys in different spots, you're seeing cool stuff.
- 27:28Speaker 1: You're like, hey, look at there's a fish. You know,
- 27:31Speaker 1: setting up camp all damn time whatever, It's just a
- 27:33Speaker 1: lot happening. That's the pro The con is you don't
- 27:38Speaker 1: really settle in and you're not doing a long game
- 27:41Speaker 1: calling strategy because you're always in new spots. Another style
- 27:45Speaker 1: of moose hunting would be that you're cruising somehow. You're
- 27:48Speaker 1: cruising by quad runner, you're cruising by bow, you're cruising
- 27:51Speaker 1: on foot, you're cruising the horses and you're like looking
- 27:54Speaker 1: for moose that you'll make a play on. Then the
- 27:57Speaker 1: third is that you're somewhere where you can't move stock
- 28:00Speaker 1: and you have to just try to call one to you.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And that's the kind that's the most boring to do.
- 28:07Speaker 1: It's the most boring to watch, but it's psychologically the
- 28:11Speaker 1: most fulfilling. Yeah, in my view, Yo, any think's stupid, I.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Don't know about its stupid, but not on my list
- 28:22Speaker 3: of things to repeat.
- 28:23Speaker 1: He's not mature enough for it.
- 28:27Speaker 6: It's more of a gentleman's game what you're saying.
- 28:29Speaker 2: No, no, no, just an old guys game.
- 28:36Speaker 1: It's the old guy's game.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Well you said mature. Usually people mature with age.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Not like that. That spot the old guys game.
- 28:47Speaker 8: Oh guys not walking half a mile down the hill
- 28:50Speaker 8: to get water.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Pack that up.
- 28:54Speaker 1: It's a mind Uh, it's all mental.
- 28:58Speaker 6: It's patience thing, isn't it? That intrigues me about it?
- 29:01Speaker 2: For sure?
- 29:02Speaker 8: I've grown to really like that hunt. At first, I
- 29:05Speaker 8: didn't like it.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Because of what I'm talking about. Yeah, let me tell
- 29:09Speaker 1: you so. I got a way of put it. I
- 29:10Speaker 1: got a metaphor for you. Years ago, I was on
- 29:13Speaker 1: an airplane. I only had two kids at the time,
- 29:15Speaker 1: and they were real little, and I was flying with
- 29:17Speaker 1: the two little kids without my wife, and I'm struggling.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Everybody's shitting themselves, pissing themselves, crying, you know what I mean,
- 29:24Speaker 1: little kids. And the guy behind me offers me a
- 29:29Speaker 1: word of encouragement. He says, listen, right now, it's all physical.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Later it'll all be mental. And it's better when it's physical.
- 29:42Speaker 2: It's easier.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Now, let's apply that to moose hunting.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Yeah, but I think by that metaphor, you're agreeing with me.
- 29:59Speaker 2: You're saying it's better when it's physical.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Yeah, never mind that story.
- 30:05Speaker 2: That's right.
- 30:06Speaker 5: But but aren't you.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Also saying that we always view the physical stuff as
- 30:14Speaker 4: the hard part, but the mental stuff is really the
- 30:17Speaker 4: hard part.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. I put that back. Yeah, you put
- 30:20Speaker 1: it back in.
- 30:21Speaker 8: But there is some physical aspects of that hunt, because
- 30:23Speaker 8: you got to pack the thing back to the strip.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Well, but once you get good at that hunt, you
- 30:29Speaker 3: shoot them on the strip.
- 30:31Speaker 2: From what I understand, I'm not to.
- 30:33Speaker 1: That level of discipline. I'm not to that level of mental.
- 30:37Speaker 2: It'd be tough. Well, you could do it there, but
- 30:39Speaker 2: there are guys.
- 30:40Speaker 1: There are guys that I believe there are I know
- 30:44Speaker 1: this for a fact because I've just heard it from
- 30:46Speaker 1: too many people who are trustworthy sources. There are people
- 30:49Speaker 1: who will that I've known, who will be like, oh,
- 30:56Speaker 1: we could get that bowl right now, dead to rights,
- 31:00Speaker 1: but we're going to call it more toward the air strip.
- 31:02Speaker 1: That is not a place I have arrived at, nor
- 31:07Speaker 1: will I ever arrive at that place mentally.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but maybe physically.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I could see that you'd be placed there physically, That's true.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You might be placed there physically, but I will never
- 31:19Speaker 1: arrive there. Where Like, we could get it now and
- 31:21Speaker 1: just have it be gotten, or we could try to
- 31:23Speaker 1: call it up to the airstrip. There's a level of
- 31:27Speaker 1: confidence there, there's a certain swagger. Yeah, now that would
- 31:32Speaker 1: be a good episode.
- 31:33Speaker 6: Calling it to the airstrip. You know, Well, there's a
- 31:35Speaker 6: lot too calling I mean, you talked about it with
- 31:38Speaker 6: with Buck Bowden in the past, and we talked about
- 31:41Speaker 6: it a little bit in this episode, and I mean
- 31:43Speaker 6: it's it's all with your throat in your mouth, and
- 31:47Speaker 6: it's I mean, that's a pretty intriguing element to me.
- 31:50Speaker 6: I'm nodding here, like oh yeah, yeah, calling it to
- 31:53Speaker 6: the landing strip like I know what I'm talking about,
- 31:54Speaker 6: but I really I've just like watched you know, I've
- 31:56Speaker 6: watched all this transit.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Watched enough of it. Yeah, but you know what you do.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I want to ask you this, ask you this as
- 32:02Speaker 1: an editor. This was kind of our white whale. I think.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I think, yeah, you were working on me either when
- 32:07Speaker 1: we with this is the thing we wanted to do.
- 32:09Speaker 1: We wanted to make a show one day twenty two minutes. Okay,
- 32:16Speaker 1: if people wondered, why twenty minutes, because it's a show's
- 32:18Speaker 1: thirty minutes. But when you pull out the ad time,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you got twenty minutes to work with. Is that the
- 32:21Speaker 1: point you're gonna make Yanny?
- 32:24Speaker 3: Uh No, I was just gonna say, you're talking about
- 32:25Speaker 3: the one that we want. Our dream was to make
- 32:27Speaker 3: one in real time.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah. We wanted to somehow find a way to
- 32:36Speaker 1: make an episode that was just hit record.
- 32:40Speaker 7: A live stream, no.
- 32:43Speaker 1: But hit record and then after twenty two minutes, hit stop.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And we used to think that you would like go
- 32:52Speaker 1: out and sort of pick a thing like a stock,
- 32:55Speaker 1: find a stock and be like, okay, go.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I used to prep you.
- 33:01Speaker 3: I mean, there were a couple of hunts we went
- 33:02Speaker 3: on and where we were like, if we have the opportunity,
- 33:06Speaker 3: I'll be like, Steve, this is it. We're going to
- 33:08Speaker 3: try it right now, and I would prep you with
- 33:10Speaker 3: talking points that you'd have to hit in those twenty
- 33:13Speaker 3: two minutes, and the goal would be that, like the
- 33:16Speaker 3: beginning of the stock was the beginning, and then as
- 33:18Speaker 3: we went through the stock, you'd be like, you know,
- 33:21Speaker 3: keeping people along, doing your thing, and then somewhere around
- 33:25Speaker 3: the bang or soon after the bang, you would hit
- 33:28Speaker 3: stop and you'd have twenty two minutes of like literally
- 33:31Speaker 3: one shot, and you'd have this episode.
- 33:34Speaker 1: You'd be like a Robert Altman scene. We never did this, Hansy,
- 33:42Speaker 1: great edit. You should do more of the show.
- 33:49Speaker 8: In Texas.
- 33:50Speaker 7: With the twenty two bucks that got called in.
- 33:53Speaker 1: We could have made a twenty two minute bus. You
- 33:56Speaker 1: know what what made us think? What made us think
- 33:59Speaker 1: of that idea. We were in New Zealand one time
- 34:03Speaker 1: and we did like kind of a little bonus thing.
- 34:05Speaker 1: One day. This guy was going out the hunt pigs
- 34:07Speaker 1: with his dogs in New Zealand and he's like, Okay,
- 34:10Speaker 1: we'll meet at whatever place were.
- 34:12Speaker 3: You on this No, but I've often referenced this episode
- 34:16Speaker 3: because it's impressive what transpired.
- 34:18Speaker 1: We didn't know where we're going, and we're like, okay,
- 34:20Speaker 1: we'll bring all our stuff and we go out. This
- 34:23Speaker 1: guy we get there like right at daylight, his little
- 34:27Speaker 1: dogs strike a track of a pig. We're in the mountains.
- 34:32Speaker 1: And also in a while later, like the dogs, I'm
- 34:35Speaker 1: not kidding you, the dogs cease existing on his GPS.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It's because they've gone into a pig's hole. Okay, so
- 34:45Speaker 1: you just lose contact with you know where they were,
- 34:48Speaker 1: but you're not getting any feedback from m because they're
- 34:49Speaker 1: down in a hole fighting a pig in a cave hole. Okay,
- 34:53Speaker 1: like a like a hole in the ground. We eventually
- 34:58Speaker 1: find the pig. The dogs are blocking them up. We
- 35:02Speaker 1: excavate straight down and arrive at the pig's back like
- 35:08Speaker 1: dig a big hole down to the pig, find the pig,
- 35:12Speaker 1: get the pig killed, drag the pig up out of
- 35:15Speaker 1: the hole. The New Zealand dude gets a big fire going,
- 35:19Speaker 1: gets the pig all wet in the creek, burns all
- 35:21Speaker 1: the hair off it, and by this point it's like
- 35:23Speaker 1: ten in the morning and we're like, oh, that's we
- 35:26Speaker 1: just made like an episode of a TV show and
- 35:28Speaker 1: like ran it. Yeah, it was great. Yeah, all this
- 35:31Speaker 1: stuff going somewhere seven days. It's like it was like,
- 35:34Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not kidding you. Besides us cooking some
- 35:36Speaker 1: pig later, I mean, it was like eleven o'clock in
- 35:38Speaker 1: the morning and we're like, that was the most amazing
- 35:41Speaker 1: morning of the most amazing morning I've ever been involved in.
- 35:45Speaker 3: It's definitely besides maybe a cooking episode that's a totally
- 35:49Speaker 3: different animal. But as far as a hunting meter episode,
- 35:52Speaker 3: I think it's the only one that's ever been shot
- 35:54Speaker 3: in one day.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Half a day that got a sick. We should try
- 35:58Speaker 1: to do one in twenty two minutes. Uh hell are
- 36:05Speaker 1: we talking about.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Long moose?
- 36:08Speaker 1: Moose? Yeah, so the moose hunt. Yeah, No one goes anywhere.
- 36:15Speaker 6: No, you're in the same spot the whole time. I mean,
- 36:21Speaker 6: it's a it.
- 36:21Speaker 1: We shot maybe about twenty yards from where we spent
- 36:24Speaker 1: eight six days.
- 36:24Speaker 6: It's like a war of attrition, you guys just like
- 36:27Speaker 6: waiting it out.
- 36:28Speaker 3: What makes that one particularly tough and the patients is
- 36:32Speaker 3: that there are many other hunts where the same level
- 36:34Speaker 3: of patients is required.
- 36:36Speaker 2: I mean, hunting eight days in the white tail rut.
- 36:39Speaker 3: Can be that way because you're going you're like, I
- 36:41Speaker 3: want to see five bucks a day. Often you're like,
- 36:43Speaker 3: I saw a flicker of a tail, and I sat
- 36:45Speaker 3: here for ten hours, but I saw birds and squirrels
- 36:51Speaker 3: and a bobcat watch by, and there's other things happening
- 36:54Speaker 3: in the eastern deciduous force up there. The amount of wildlife,
- 37:00Speaker 3: even though Alaska is often considered this just the place of.
- 37:07Speaker 2: A lot with.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Abundance, abundance with critters, it's not. When the salmon are
- 37:11Speaker 3: there that day in the river, it's amazing, there's tens
- 37:14Speaker 3: of thousands swimming by your feet. But a month earlier
- 37:17Speaker 3: there was zero, and a month later there's zero. And
- 37:20Speaker 3: when you're sitting on that knob waiting for that moose,
- 37:23Speaker 3: there is not an abundance of wildlife, which makes it
- 37:26Speaker 3: particularly tough to entertain your mind.
- 37:28Speaker 1: That's what I've tried to raise that point. Before caribou hunting,
- 37:31Speaker 1: you're sitting there watching three hundred cariboo walk by, and
- 37:35Speaker 1: you're like, my god, like the land of plenty, and
- 37:37Speaker 1: be like, let's talk about the other eleven months in
- 37:39Speaker 1: two weeks, you can sit here and nothing walks by.
- 37:44Speaker 6: Yeah, there's all these there's all these moments that you know,
- 37:46Speaker 6: like for all of this together, all these episodes, I
- 37:49Speaker 6: want to say, there's probably like one hundred and forty
- 37:52Speaker 6: hours of a footage. Sure, yeah, so, and and all
- 37:56Speaker 6: that comes down to like a little over two hours
- 37:59Speaker 6: like of final really what you're dealing with. Yeah, so
- 38:01Speaker 6: that's that's the gross amount. But like even within this
- 38:05Speaker 6: episode with like nine days or however many long, it
- 38:08Speaker 6: was like, there's all these moments that I want to
- 38:11Speaker 6: include that like evidence exactly what you guys are talking about,
- 38:14Speaker 6: Like where the like your your mental stimulus from your
- 38:17Speaker 6: surroundings becomes so narrowed over time where you're so hyper attuned.
- 38:21Speaker 6: It seems like so hyper attuned to your surroundings and
- 38:24Speaker 6: the environment and what you're seeing. That like you've got that,
- 38:28Speaker 6: and then you've got like the mental stimulus between each other,
- 38:31Speaker 6: and then you end up creating these like and it
- 38:34Speaker 6: all kind of killed me to cut this, but there
- 38:37Speaker 6: was like this one scene where you guys create this
- 38:39Speaker 6: song about like a watermelon man on a corn stand
- 38:44Speaker 6: on a block on some block in New York city.
- 38:49Speaker 1: We were singing, and I cut it simple man. Yes, yes,
- 38:55Speaker 1: that's a simple kind. Yeah, because Clay was saying when
- 39:00Speaker 1: he retires, he wants to open up a sweet corn stand.
- 39:05Speaker 1: So we rewrote simple man as cornstan.
- 39:13Speaker 2: I forgot about that.
- 39:16Speaker 1: When I was young. Uh, build your stand, son, and
- 39:21Speaker 1: they will come plant your seeds in the morning sun.
- 39:27Speaker 7: And then we need like some outtakes because part of
- 39:34Speaker 7: his problem was he wants to be a corn stand man,
- 39:36Speaker 7: but just not grow the corn, which is not the
- 39:40Speaker 7: kind of corn stand I want to go to.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he's store man. He wants to be like I mean,
- 39:47Speaker 1: he wants to be like a like a retailer system.
- 39:54Speaker 3: I'm just guessing here, but I don't think that that
- 39:57Speaker 3: on average, the person running the corn and stand is
- 40:00Speaker 3: the farmer.
- 40:02Speaker 1: That's the kind I like to go to. That I
- 40:04Speaker 1: would have family, really, Yeah, where I mean I grew up.
- 40:08Speaker 2: They have to be out on the well.
- 40:11Speaker 4: You's like the farmer's fifteen year old daughter has to
- 40:15Speaker 4: set there all day or somebody in the in the sphere,
- 40:19Speaker 4: maybe not.
- 40:19Speaker 1: The person planting the seed and run the combine. Yeah,
- 40:22Speaker 1: when I go to a corn stand man, I do
- 40:24Speaker 1: not want to be buying no corn from some guy
- 40:26Speaker 1: that bought that corn. I will, I don't want to
- 40:32Speaker 1: that's the grocery store, right, well, that's the business Clay
- 40:35Speaker 1: wants to retire into it. Imagine that he wants to
- 40:40Speaker 1: be a simple corn stand man. He told me, you
- 40:42Speaker 1: want to be a commercial cab fisherman. When yeah, but
- 40:45Speaker 1: you can't do that, a simple commercial cat fishing man.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Too many syllables even for us. Uh so you cut
- 40:55Speaker 1: that out? Yeah, yeah, sadly I wish, because that would
- 41:01Speaker 1: have given you six minutes, right.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I know, I know, yeah it was.
- 41:04Speaker 6: It was too long.
- 41:05Speaker 2: We should make that a YouTube short.
- 41:06Speaker 6: There are so many that come out of these. I mean, yeah,
- 41:09Speaker 6: there's and uh you know we do.
- 41:11Speaker 2: We have a whole channel for that now.
- 41:12Speaker 6: So yeah, yeah, no, the YouTube clips, there's some cool
- 41:15Speaker 6: stuff happening on that, yeah for sure. But yeah, Tho's
- 41:19Speaker 6: future stuff, future projects. And you know, we've talked about
- 41:21Speaker 6: like director's cuts, you know, the equivalent with some of
- 41:24Speaker 6: these episodes too. It seems like a possibility, especially with
- 41:28Speaker 6: a couple of them.
- 41:29Speaker 1: So we talked about ratland Bucks, but have we talked
- 41:32Speaker 1: about ratland Box a ratland Box episode. I mean, we've
- 41:36Speaker 1: touched on it, but have we tackled it?
- 41:37Speaker 2: No?
- 41:37Speaker 6: No, No, we touched on it over.
- 41:39Speaker 1: We've played for again, we've played flag football.
- 41:42Speaker 6: Yeah, we're just giving stones on it over the top
- 41:44Speaker 6: of it. So go on, too many Bucks? Too Many Bucks?
- 41:48Speaker 6: Is that twenty two bucks episode? And it's just like
- 41:52Speaker 6: if I were to compare it like a like a
- 41:53Speaker 6: through line like a story. You know, most of these
- 41:55Speaker 6: stories have like a curve and it goes up and
- 41:58Speaker 6: then there's an apex and it comes down very quickly,
- 42:00Speaker 6: and then this one is just like flat line of
- 42:03Speaker 6: action for like twenty two minutes. So in trying to
- 42:06Speaker 6: like figure out what to do with that.
- 42:09Speaker 2: We were.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I mean, it's like, the footage is cool.
- 42:13Speaker 6: I shouldn't say that.
- 42:14Speaker 1: As I went into that, no one. I went into
- 42:18Speaker 1: it thinking, this is about rattling a bunch of bucks.
- 42:22Speaker 8: Yeah, you're like, I just wanted to be a montage
- 42:24Speaker 8: of us rattling a bunch of bucks.
- 42:26Speaker 2: And by the end I was like, but I think
- 42:27Speaker 2: we got that.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Yeah, you definitely got that. You definitely got that. But
- 42:32Speaker 6: on top of that, there's just like some other cool
- 42:34Speaker 6: things that I think we were able to weave in
- 42:36Speaker 6: which was this, you have a posturing deer decoy, which
- 42:41Speaker 6: I think is a pretty interesting concept just from like
- 42:44Speaker 6: a just bringing in bucks to a decoy is an
- 42:48Speaker 6: interesting concept on its own, but then rattling it in
- 42:51Speaker 6: on top of that provides another element. But with this
- 42:54Speaker 6: DSD decoy, I mean getting a little bit of background
- 42:59Speaker 6: and context for that, for that how that came about
- 43:02Speaker 6: in your relationship with Dave, and using it on this
- 43:05Speaker 6: shoot was like a whole interesting through line that that
- 43:08Speaker 6: we're gonna weave together with the with the with the action,
- 43:11Speaker 6: which is cool obviously, but but it gives you some
- 43:14Speaker 6: some context.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't mean this has any disrespect to anybody
- 43:17Speaker 1: in this room, but I like Dave by name that
- 43:19Speaker 1: I work with.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Oh, he's a he's a great person. I mean you
- 43:22Speaker 6: see that on the interview, and I don't hardly know.
- 43:26Speaker 1: You can't hear a thing anybody says.
- 43:30Speaker 3: He spoke yesterday we had a big company wide meeting.
- 43:35Speaker 3: He started off by saying very nervous to speak in
- 43:37Speaker 3: front of people, but then landed like three very good jokes.
- 43:40Speaker 3: I felt that aside had he not done his little joke,
- 43:44Speaker 3: but at all when that man starts to talk about
- 43:47Speaker 3: his craft. I mean you can just feel it from
- 43:51Speaker 3: his heart. And like I was skeoching up in my
- 43:54Speaker 3: seat being like, what else is he gonna say? I mean,
- 43:57Speaker 3: I find it very captivating when he's about his craft,
- 44:01Speaker 3: and uh yeah, he's great.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he's He's the next level. It's hard.
- 44:05Speaker 6: It was hard to like isolate and Hillary Hillary Burne,
- 44:10Speaker 6: our post production director, has provided so much for this
- 44:13Speaker 6: whole project, like idea wise, and but she was on
- 44:17Speaker 6: the she was on that shoot. And when she brought
- 44:20Speaker 6: the footage.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Back and was pulling Dave.
- 44:23Speaker 6: Yeah, and when she brought that stuff back, she was
- 44:26Speaker 6: pulling the selects, which is like the best moments of it.
- 44:28Speaker 6: And it was like I was asking her, how's it going,
- 44:30Speaker 6: and She's like, there's this just so much that's good,
- 44:32Speaker 6: like so much everything that he talks about, everything his story,
- 44:36Speaker 6: it's like so interesting and so and then it was
- 44:38Speaker 6: all of a sudden it was like, all right, well,
- 44:40Speaker 6: we can't, we don't. This is not a DSD commercial.
- 44:43Speaker 6: We don't want it to be like a marketing piece,
- 44:45Speaker 6: like necessarily, this is a this is a story profile,
- 44:49Speaker 6: it's a profile. And and but his there's so much
- 44:53Speaker 6: interesting stuff that he says. It's like we could make
- 44:55Speaker 6: a whole we could make a whole show on on Dave.
- 44:58Speaker 6: I think. I mean, he's just seems like a cool cat. Uh.
- 45:04Speaker 1: I'll tell you a funny story about day, but I
- 45:06Speaker 1: gotta give a little background on it to the listener.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Here at our company, we have this thing. I don't
- 45:11Speaker 1: know if anyone pays attention to it, but it's on
- 45:13Speaker 1: your calendar every day. There's supposed to be like a
- 45:14Speaker 1: time of day people are like, oh, I got you know,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I got two men emails. I can't focus on what
- 45:18Speaker 1: I want to focus on. So there's like this time
- 45:20Speaker 1: of day when it's supposed to be that you can't
- 45:21Speaker 1: email like company focus time.
- 45:24Speaker 2: You can't have meetings during that time.
- 45:26Speaker 1: But I never get to do it because I always
- 45:27Speaker 1: have meetings. But it's like company focus time, so it
- 45:32Speaker 1: always pops up. I don't know, fait does it? Does anybody
- 45:34Speaker 1: pay attention to Company focus Time four day? It's just
- 45:38Speaker 1: it's just built. It's like it's a it's a joke.
- 45:40Speaker 1: It's always been there and no one knows what it
- 45:42Speaker 1: is whatever, but it's there. Yeah, I'm hunting turkeys with
- 45:45Speaker 1: Dave during the week. Hey, me and Dave, we're hunting turkeys.
- 45:50Speaker 1: We're driving from one spot to the next days like
- 45:53Speaker 1: looking at his phone, he looks at me. Oh shit,
- 45:55Speaker 1: it's company focused on.
- 46:01Speaker 6: So did he observe it?
- 46:06Speaker 1: We focused on driving to our next jury?
- 46:10Speaker 2: Nice?
- 46:11Speaker 1: Okay, who's dear with Yannis? What a smart guy is?
- 46:15Speaker 6: Well, because you guys have some good ribbing back and forth.
- 46:18Speaker 6: But yeah, that's a that's that one's where like things
- 46:21Speaker 6: get weird right where we took this episode that was.
- 46:26Speaker 1: All right, all right, where's.
- 46:28Speaker 6: He going with this?
- 46:30Speaker 7: Well?
- 46:30Speaker 1: Made us go to a new spot.
- 46:31Speaker 6: Okay, Yeah, so that's what started maybe the beginning. It's
- 46:36Speaker 6: maybe the beginning.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I want to hear from your perspective, but.
- 46:39Speaker 6: Well, from what I saw, I was like, we had
- 46:41Speaker 6: this tremendously beautiful hunt in Sonora. I mean this the
- 46:45Speaker 6: scenery there is outstanding. It's incredible. I've never been, but again,
- 46:49Speaker 6: I've like just watched a lot of those footage, but
- 46:52Speaker 6: it was it was like nothing happened for seven days.
- 46:58Speaker 6: So we had we had we had all this footage
- 47:01Speaker 6: of like you know, driving around, Johnny gets stuck in
- 47:05Speaker 6: a can am or a polaris or something, and that's
- 47:07Speaker 6: like kind of an interesting moment and which is evidence
- 47:12Speaker 6: of the hard country. But like that's that's what we
- 47:15Speaker 6: have for like seven days. And then in like twenty
- 47:18Speaker 6: minutes at the end of this, like you guys both
- 47:20Speaker 6: do deer at the end of this, and it happens
- 47:24Speaker 6: so fast, and we don't have any like long lens,
- 47:28Speaker 6: so like the very zoomed in picture of the deer
- 47:33Speaker 6: and what they're doing and things like that. So we
- 47:35Speaker 6: were just limited on what we have for this episode.
- 47:37Speaker 6: And so in the process of trying to come up,
- 47:40Speaker 6: we like I cut an episode and it turned out
- 47:43Speaker 6: to be I want to say it was like fourteen
- 47:45Speaker 6: minutes or something like that, and it was it was
- 47:48Speaker 6: interesting to watch. I thought, like, once we got it
- 47:50Speaker 6: all together, it was like a it was an interesting
- 47:52Speaker 6: fourteen minute episode, but like these these have to be
- 47:55Speaker 6: twenty two. And so the idea became like, all right,
- 48:00Speaker 6: what if we what if we have you guys like
- 48:03Speaker 6: Ciskel and Ebert like in a movie theater kind of
- 48:06Speaker 6: like uh Mystery science Theater, the show where they watch
- 48:10Speaker 6: like b movies and science fiction and they have these
- 48:12Speaker 6: like little silhouetted guys in front of the movie, and
- 48:15Speaker 6: what if we have them sitting there talking about and
- 48:18Speaker 6: narrating effectively this episode. And so we had you guys
- 48:21Speaker 6: come on a to a little cinema and Livingstone and
- 48:24Speaker 6: and uh and basically reshoot the thing. So we had
- 48:28Speaker 6: a what the cinema people would call like second unit.
- 48:30Speaker 6: So we had you know, we had lighting and we
- 48:32Speaker 6: had cameras again, and then we we shot. We shot you.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Doctor Randall makes a cameo.
- 48:37Speaker 6: Doctor Randall makes a cameo. He's a he is an
- 48:40Speaker 6: annoyed an annoyed theater goer, which is which is kind
- 48:45Speaker 6: of fun. But but no, I think we get a
- 48:47Speaker 6: little bit of like extra again, extra context, extra extra background,
- 48:51Speaker 6: and uh, it is it was a giant pain in
- 48:54Speaker 6: the butt. I mean, like you're talking about a TV
- 48:56Speaker 6: show in a TV show like so, so that alone
- 48:59Speaker 6: is like got a lot of technical constraints and our
- 49:03Speaker 6: team is awesome and so like Zoe, our post production
- 49:06Speaker 6: supervisor has done some cool work and like compositing that
- 49:10Speaker 6: all together so that it just it's it looks different,
- 49:14Speaker 6: like I don't think anybody's ever done this in the
- 49:15Speaker 6: hunting space, Like I don't think that exists. So that's
- 49:18Speaker 6: that's what makes me excited about this episode.
- 49:23Speaker 1: We still haven't tackled the too many bucks. Yeah, why
- 49:29Speaker 1: why why do you think people don't? Why do people
- 49:31Speaker 1: not just want to watch awesome buck footage? I think
- 49:34Speaker 1: we're gonna just call it awesome buck footage.
- 49:36Speaker 6: I think I think we're going to get that too.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Did you see that one?
- 49:39Speaker 9: It's drooling I've seen I've seen multiple more like have
- 49:47Speaker 9: like swollen necks and just like he's drooling.
- 49:51Speaker 6: I think I think I know the shot you're talking about.
- 49:53Speaker 1: He's coming straight straight in.
- 49:54Speaker 6: Yeah, got a little bit more of a vertical set
- 49:58Speaker 6: of antlers.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Yeah, now that's the one I had to stomp ACTU
- 50:02Speaker 1: I thought he was gonna get That's that's pretty wild. Yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 1: what else am I think? Do you see the one
- 50:08Speaker 1: that you see how they what's going through their head
- 50:11Speaker 1: when they want to attack the decoy?
- 50:13Speaker 6: Oh, I mean we have we have footage of them
- 50:15Speaker 6: literally attacking the decoy. I mean that's that's cool stuff too.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I always pictured when a buck was going to attack,
- 50:21Speaker 1: like because your picture this, it's like you're giving a
- 50:24Speaker 1: buck the dream scenario as the assaulter.
- 50:29Speaker 6: Because he's going anyway, here's a buck.
- 50:32Speaker 1: He's gonna fight, but the buck is doing no defensive maneuvering.
- 50:37Speaker 1: So you're able to see like like let's say I
- 50:39Speaker 1: said to you, uh, go punch that guy right, and
- 50:43Speaker 1: you're approaching thinking like, okay, I'm gonna have to dodge
- 50:46Speaker 1: his punches, you know, but it winds up being like
- 50:49Speaker 1: power slapping. So but you can just do what you
- 50:53Speaker 1: want to do. So here you're seeing bucks who are
- 50:56Speaker 1: coming in being like, oh shit, I'm gonna need to
- 50:58Speaker 1: fight this buck. I hope I don't get hurt. And
- 51:01Speaker 1: after comments, he's like, oh it, man, this buck is
- 51:05Speaker 1: not doing any of the things that would defend it. Yeah,
- 51:11Speaker 1: so he's like, so what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna
- 51:15Speaker 1: come from behind. I'm gonna get up to him, right
- 51:19Speaker 1: alongside of him. I'm gonna stand there a long time,
- 51:24Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna bayl Ris. That's what he wants
- 51:29Speaker 1: to hit. And the.
- 51:32Speaker 6: Moment, the moment of curiosity was like it's like it
- 51:35Speaker 6: lasted so long, curious, curious, and then the moment of
- 51:39Speaker 6: aggression was like four seconds, like.
- 51:42Speaker 1: But you get to see what he would prefer to
- 51:44Speaker 1: do is hit you so hard in your ribs. He
- 51:49Speaker 1: doesn't want to hit your head. Ye, yeah, he doesn't
- 51:52Speaker 1: want to hit your your weapons are man. He wants
- 51:56Speaker 1: to punch your ribs hard death.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Do you ever have any that, because, like you said,
- 52:02Speaker 3: they figure out once they make impact that there's not
- 52:05Speaker 3: a buck. But did you ever have some so some
- 52:08Speaker 3: that were so curious or aggressive that even then they're like,
- 52:12Speaker 3: that's not.
- 52:12Speaker 2: A buck, but I can't take it. I'm gonna go
- 52:15Speaker 2: back again.
- 52:15Speaker 1: They were definitely, they definitely were like something is askew.
- 52:20Speaker 8: Well, we got one where he came in, knocked the
- 52:23Speaker 8: decoy over. I ran out there, set it back up,
- 52:25Speaker 8: and then he came back in again.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I should say there's always it's hard to know
- 52:32Speaker 1: what's going on in a deer's head. I would say
- 52:35Speaker 1: that that the handful of times, there was always like
- 52:38Speaker 1: what I read as a bit of like what yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 1: like a what.
- 52:42Speaker 2: You know not.
- 52:45Speaker 1: That he would hit and then kind of recovered from
- 52:49Speaker 1: the surprise.
- 52:50Speaker 3: It was like a gobbler, right, he just will sit
- 52:52Speaker 3: there and keep flogging that thing. You know, there's no
- 52:55Speaker 3: it sounds like plastic, it's on the ground.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Its throlling around.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Still hasn't reacted to him, but he's like whatever, I'm
- 53:01Speaker 3: waving it to you.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like, oh yeah, well now I'm gonna breathe you.
- 53:06Speaker 6: You make a really good point in that episode that
- 53:08Speaker 6: you say, like i'd like to to the effect of
- 53:11Speaker 6: like I'd like to interview I'd like to interview a deer,
- 53:15Speaker 6: but it's got to be an honest one. Yeah, Like
- 53:17Speaker 6: and that's that was.
- 53:19Speaker 1: So mister buck when you came running up here and
- 53:22Speaker 1: you saw that deer standard, what was the first thing
- 53:24Speaker 1: you thought, you.
- 53:25Speaker 6: Know, like an exit interview like this won't affect you,
- 53:29Speaker 6: but we've got to know.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I just my advice as my advice to use.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Just let people like those bucks.
- 53:39Speaker 6: It's definitely definitely not gonna tell you how to do
- 53:41Speaker 6: your job, Hansei.
- 53:42Speaker 1: But okay, it's one last one we was talked about
- 53:46Speaker 1: cutting cutting a Mule Deer episode.
- 53:49Speaker 6: Yeah, so the Mealier episode is you Ronnie Collins Garrett,
- 53:54Speaker 6: and uh, it happens like it's kind of another one
- 53:56Speaker 6: that happens quickly, like it's like a day right, too good.
- 54:01Speaker 6: It's it's just too good. And there's one and this
- 54:03Speaker 6: is like a technical consideration that's just sometimes just a bummer.
- 54:07Speaker 6: It's just it's windy, and like it's just when and
- 54:10Speaker 6: like there's no really great way to everything sounds like, yeah,
- 54:14Speaker 6: there's no really great way to like eliminate that or
- 54:17Speaker 6: or you know, clean it up afterward. And so is
- 54:20Speaker 6: that right, There's not like there's there's an extent.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Right, there's no I would think there's gotta be some
- 54:26Speaker 1: little magic trick to make all that goal away.
- 54:28Speaker 6: It's it still just sounds like you've you've treated it heavily,
- 54:32Speaker 6: and so it's like distracting. So I think it's it's
- 54:35Speaker 6: getting better like every year, but still, but I think
- 54:37Speaker 6: another another element of that is just that it's like
- 54:40Speaker 6: when it's windy, people just talk less, like on camera
- 54:43Speaker 6: when it's windy. And I don't know what that is,
- 54:46Speaker 6: but it's just an observation I've had is that it's
- 54:49Speaker 6: something I don't know if it's a just a something
- 54:52Speaker 6: very primordial or or whatnot, but like they just talk less.
- 54:56Speaker 6: And that's and that's definitely what happened. But it gave
- 54:59Speaker 6: us a kind of a cool oppera ortunity to like,
- 55:01Speaker 6: I mean, these hunts are across big expanses and long
- 55:06Speaker 6: they can be long shots. And so it kind of
- 55:08Speaker 6: gave us an example, like an instance in which to
- 55:11Speaker 6: talk about long distance shooting as it pertains to meld
- 55:17Speaker 6: your hunting yep. And so we have this episode that
- 55:20Speaker 6: was that we then shot again with Garrett and you
- 55:23Speaker 6: at the range talking about long range shooting and talk
- 55:26Speaker 6: about talking about the evolution of long range shooting as
- 55:30Speaker 6: it applies to hunting and practice. And so the other
- 55:33Speaker 6: cool thing about this is it is going to be
- 55:34Speaker 6: like graphically treated, So we're going to have graphics in
- 55:37Speaker 6: it that demonstrate and show some of the trajectory trajectories
- 55:41Speaker 6: of bullets over distance and and how that how that works,
- 55:45Speaker 6: and how practice like actually works, like how it actually
- 55:50Speaker 6: affects your hunt.
- 55:51Speaker 1: And also a thing we'll get into is that people
- 55:54Speaker 1: want to I think this will be in the final
- 55:58Speaker 1: product an observation that no one questions gravity, but shooters
- 56:06Speaker 1: want to act like the wind, that they can wish
- 56:09Speaker 1: the wind away, right.
- 56:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 56:13Speaker 1: They would never be like I'm just going to act
- 56:15Speaker 1: like gravity isn't going to pull that bullet down, But
- 56:19Speaker 1: when it's windy, they're like, I'm going to act like
- 56:21Speaker 1: the wind isn't going to blow that bullet because I
- 56:24Speaker 1: don't want to go into that hole. I don't want
- 56:26Speaker 1: to go into that whole deal, you know, So it's
- 56:30Speaker 1: gonna be like somehow it's not actually going to blow
- 56:32Speaker 1: the bullet way over to the right or left, you know,
- 56:34Speaker 1: which is the thing we talked about on the range,
- 56:37Speaker 1: like wind is as real factor. It's as real as gravity.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's easy to understand one axis, but when you
- 56:45Speaker 3: add in the second one, it gets real complicated.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Yeah, And my tendency would my tendency has been to
- 56:51Speaker 1: be like I'm just going to wish that one away,
- 56:54Speaker 1: like maybe it's only windy where I'm at. Is it
- 56:58Speaker 1: going to be blowing the bullet the whole old time,
- 57:00Speaker 1: because how could it. That's time on the range, you know,
- 57:03Speaker 1: not home on the range. Time on the range has demonstrated,
- 57:06Speaker 1: like when you one of the things about shooting extreme
- 57:08Speaker 1: dis not even extreme distances, because that means a whole
- 57:11Speaker 1: new thing. Though shooting long distances, shooting at distances greater
- 57:15Speaker 1: than I would shoot in the hunting has taught me
- 57:18Speaker 1: to accept the reality of wind. When you're shooting at
- 57:23Speaker 1: in the high wind, you're shooting at stuff six seven
- 57:25Speaker 1: hundred yards away and you're watching bullets hit the sand
- 57:30Speaker 1: several targets to the left or right. You're like, Okay,
- 57:34Speaker 1: I now agree that this has to be paid attention to.
- 57:37Speaker 6: You know, there's a moment in that where you're like,
- 57:40Speaker 6: this is like post post hunt where you're like, my
- 57:44Speaker 6: practice has paid off. Yeah, and and and it's not
- 57:47Speaker 6: just it's obvious. It's like obvious to the viewer, and
- 57:50Speaker 6: it's obvious to Garrett. And it's like you don't hardly
- 57:53Speaker 6: need to say it because we've seen it happen, but
- 57:55Speaker 6: it just it. It's yeah, it's the real deal.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, what else you want to add there?
- 58:02Speaker 6: Jordans Jordan Martin's our editor working on that one right now,
- 58:05Speaker 6: and he's doing bang up job. And uh, I think there.
- 58:10Speaker 6: The thing about these episodes that kind of ties them
- 58:12Speaker 6: all together is that we get a little bit deeper
- 58:17Speaker 6: context of you as a character, a human, a hunter.
- 58:22Speaker 6: Like we just we it's like we layer down. It's
- 58:25Speaker 6: not like a substitute for meat Eater the show, but
- 58:29Speaker 6: it's just like we get some little snippets here and
- 58:32Speaker 6: there of like seth of you, of of dirt. We
- 58:37Speaker 6: get some like camera operator moments that are that are
- 58:41Speaker 6: like just cool little little tidbits that I think add
- 58:45Speaker 6: add some humor, add some fun. And we're just psyched
- 58:49Speaker 6: about it right now.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Unless governed.
- 58:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, there's like we kind of threw the rules
- 58:53Speaker 6: out the window to an extent. And so and when
- 58:57Speaker 6: does this series drop? I think early November. I think
- 59:02Speaker 6: that is what we're looking at right now.
- 59:03Speaker 1: You better get out of this place and get up
- 59:05Speaker 1: to your little place.
- 59:06Speaker 6: I know was not at half of yesterday for that
- 59:09Speaker 6: exact reason. So, yeah, clock's ticking, I believe me, I
- 59:14Speaker 6: feel it. I feel it.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Well, stay tuned everybody for rough cuts. Thanks, It's gonna
- 59:20Speaker 1: be fun many Yeah. SE's got little moments in there.
- 59:25Speaker 1: It's cute.
- 59:27Speaker 6: John, he's got some great one liners.
- 59:29Speaker 1: And Tony's in there. Brent, you had it said, hell
- 59:32Speaker 1: a lot. You titillated.
- 59:34Speaker 5: I can't hardly wait. I want to hear the rest
- 59:39Speaker 5: of the song. Yeah, oh, but not right now. You
- 59:43Speaker 5: won a case pocket knife last night.
- 59:44Speaker 1: I did. Congratulations, I did. He gave it away he
- 59:48Speaker 1: has one.
- 59:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I gave you yeah, or three. I gave it
- 59:53Speaker 5: to Myriva Dreva Hanson, who does all the editing on
- 59:58Speaker 5: my podcast A wonderful human being.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: And real quick house this country life going. You're appreciating
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: it very much, So yeah, it's very good. I get
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: a lot, a lot of feedback.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: You know, when I started that thing, I really didn't
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: really know the direction it was going to go. I
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: thought it would just be I didn't want it to
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: just be hunting fishing stories or hauling hay stories. And
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: because I didn't think there was enough meat there to
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: do it. Because there's way more people who are a
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: lot better at hunting and fishing than I am that
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: are putting stuff out there to educate people. And the
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: about three episodes in, I got a letter or Instagram
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: message from a guy in New York City. I've told
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: this story several times, but it's just so meaningful to
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: me that I always think about it. But he said,
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: you know, I live in New York City and I
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: have never hunted or fished. My dad never took me
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: hunting or fishing. When you're dad was taking you, he said,
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: But my dad was taking me to Yankee Stadium towards
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: the Yankees play, he said. And it's I relate to
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: what you're doing because I was with my dad or
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: my family members doing the same thing. And that's he said,
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: your your show is really good and I like it,
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: and I thought, why in the world with this guy
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: like that? But then I figured it out, Well, it's
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: about the show that I'm doing is about relationships. And
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: when I when I had that focus, everything became real
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: easy for me to do. Then it could be a
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: story about anything, you know, it's just the relationship with
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: a place, or a person or a thing, even you know,
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: a case pocket knife, which has been a tangible object
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: in my family's legacy and history that started with my
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: great grandfather that's carried on now and it's something that
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: everyone in my family can is a fan of and
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: appreciates because of the history of you know, our family
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: with it just a simple thing as a as a
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: pocket knife, but it's just it's something that connects all
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: of us, even to the folks that have gone before.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: Like I never knew my great grandfather, but I got
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: a pretty good idea of when he needed a pocket knife,
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: where he was reaching forward and what he was breaking out,
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: So that that's been real meaningful for me.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I like that that you got it narrow down and
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: it's about relationships. I remember at a point trying to
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: think of all the stuff I've done and written about
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and all that like through a career. I was like,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: how do you would you define it? And I thought, well,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I guess I would define it like like I explore
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: and have explored human relationships to nature. Sure right, yeah,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: from the perspective of a hunter, perspective of biologists, whatever, whatever.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: It's always been like most of my stuff, there's people.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: This is why, hey, ann are I'm opposed to that
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: poll because there's nobody there. Because there was no people.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I asked myself, why do I hate that pole, the
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: South Pole, because it's got the nature but not the people.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Well, you know, my wife and little girl and I
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: we went out to Bradford, Pennsylvania to the case factory
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: three weeks ago, and I thought I need to since
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: I've always carried pocketknives, I wanted to carry something out
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: there that meant something to me and that might mean
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: something to them. So I found a pocket knife that
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: I had setting up on a chef that I give
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: it the first pocket knife I ever bought with my
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: own money, and I gave it to my dad as
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: a president in nineteen seventy nine and when he passed away,
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: I got that back. So I thought, I want to
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: take something with me that will that means something. So
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: and I always carry twupocket knife, so I was trying
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: to figure out what's the other pocket knife I would take.
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: And last year when someone arbitrarily sent the case folks
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: my podcast of the things that carry in my pocket,
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: and those guys appreciated it. Wy, those guys appreciated and
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: they sent me. Guy sent me a pocket knife and
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: on a case knife, you know it's got the tang
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: stamp on there, and you can tell what date it
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: was manufactured that.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I know what you're talking about it. I know
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: I told you that.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it'll tell you the year and what year
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: it was manufactured a decade in the year. So I thought, well,
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: I'm gonna take that one, the first one that they
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: sent me for a token of their appreciation of, you know,
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: my family's history with it. So we go out there
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: and when they're taking my wife Alexis and my daughter
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: Bailey and I on this tour of the factory, in
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: the first place we stopped the plant manager, the production
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: manager said, this guy over here is he's doing he's
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: weld in the first part of the pocket knife together.
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: He said, he's been doing this fifty one years, this
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: job right here in this case factory, and I'm doing
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: math in my head and I go so I reached
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: in my pocket and I pulled out this knife and
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: I go over there in a medium and I said,
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: mister Dave, would you have worked on this knife? And
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: I handed to him and he opened it up and
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: looked at it and he said, oh, yeah, I worked
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: on it.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Now and.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: Handed it back to him, and I stuck in my
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: pocket and I started telling him the story of me
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: buying it and give it to my dad, my dad
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: passing away, and me getting it back. And I got
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: about halfway through that, my wife said, here, let me
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: help you tell the rest of this, because it was
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: just a pretty emotional moment, you know, for that thing
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: to have gone full circle, yeah, and beyond full circle really,
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: because I gave it to him, I got it back
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: when he passed away, and then I took it back
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: to where it was built. So it was that that
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: is the true representation I think of what my show
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: is and ship for sure.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: You know collisions, yep.
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: Yeah, just life collisions. I was telling Kren about one
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: the other day, a collision that I'm looking forward to having. Yeah,
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: if I could never catch this guy that is stealing
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: my fish. You have fished on my brother and I
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: have have been putting we.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Eat a commercial.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: It sounds like a bear Grease episode.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: Now, yeah, I hope this guy. I'm sure this guy
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: doesn't doesn't listen to anything. But my brother and I
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: have commercial fishing licenses and we fish nets on a
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: big Arkansas river. I'm not going to say which one
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: it is, but it is a big Arkansas river.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: And when we put these nets out, there's sometimes there's
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: people around. Sometimes you can see if the water's up
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: where we have them anchor to the bank.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Uh, you can't see the strings.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: But as the dams operate and there the rivers coming
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: up and down there, they're either generating power downstream and
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: they need water, you know, the river level will go
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: up and down, and then sometimes you can see the
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: strings that hold our nets well as as locks. Keep honest,
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: people honest. If a few see If you're a fisherman
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: and you hook one of these nets, and you hook
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: or you see one of these lines, you're supposed to
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: just leave it alone. Some folks don't do that. So
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: we had some guys stealing. There they leave and there
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: they're they're running our nets, keeping our fish, and but
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: they leave our nets back out.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: I guess, so we can catch some more for them.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: So I was telling what.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: They do with the nets. They're too lazy to set
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: on themselves, exactly.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: So I was telling Karen about this the other things.
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: She said, Oh my gosh, this is a here's a
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: here's a here's a moment right here we need to
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: take advantage of. So the good folks at Moultrie and
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: I are fixing to lay a trap for.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Him, advertising the trap right now. Oh yeah, but they don't.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: They don't listen. It's going to be good. I wish
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I could tell you the best forward I ever heard
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: in my whole life, but I'll never tell you. Okay,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: why not, I'll never tell you. Okay, this is pretaining
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: to fish. If we all, if we start working together
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: and ten years goes by, you come ask me. Okay, Okay,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: that's a statue. Limitations. Keep it up, man. I hope
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: you catch those guys. Oh I do too, me too.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: You can do something bad to them.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Oh no, no, nothing like that. Shame them absolutely on.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: You canna shoot at him right? Oh no, it's no,
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: that's that's pretty serious.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Unch them or nothing.
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: No, no, no that. I just want to catch them,
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: just want to let them know I know what you're doing.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: Sometimes that's the like the old farmer that caught me
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: and my partner stealing watermelons out of his watermelon patch
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: when we were in high school. He caught us dead
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: the rights and I learned that night that my friend,
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: who was six to two could jump a five strand
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: babo our fence in one one leap, and I could
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: jump four of them.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: We had to go. Do you know there's a is
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: there a melon called the brad This is the last
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: sound I say, the Bradbury Melon.
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: I got a check for that right now.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I'm nothing familiar with that.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: I'm not either.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Uh, there's a melon.
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: Brad Bradford watermelon, the Bradford melon. Oh yeah, the heirloom
- 1:09:48Speaker 7: Bradford water.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: There used to be watermelon wars and melon theft was
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: so bad in the American South. The people were lace
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: and watermelons was strict. Nine people were going out. They
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: were so fed up with watermelon theft. They were rigging explosives.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: What on watermelon? Well, here's was this type in.
- 1:10:17Speaker 7: It looks like it's like an elongated Bradford watermelon.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I want listeners. No, this is all bonus material
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: right here. Mm hmm.
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: It looks like a foot and a half long. It's
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: like long and skinny.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Listen for a second.
- 1:10:51Speaker 10: This is the saga return of the legendary melon, the
- 1:10:54Speaker 10: Bradford watermelon. There's a problem with watermelons. A watermelon cross
- 1:11:00Speaker 10: with any cord, cucumber, pumpkin, other melon or squash in
- 1:11:06Speaker 10: the vicinity, so you have to keep a mile apart
- 1:11:09Speaker 10: from any other vegetable, or else it will form vegetable mongrels.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Anyways, goes out and telling the story of the Bradford Melon.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: That's one of my favorite videos now watermelon theft. But
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I never met a watermelon thief talking about you, I
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: thought it was all bs. I was unsuccessful. Oh okay,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: you're lucky he didn't rig dynamite underneath. Oh yeah, what
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: he did was he we'd Actually, I take that back.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: I was successful.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: Just the night before we went and got one and
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: it was really good, and we raised watermelons at home.
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: I could have gone out there and got them. But
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: there was just a little more excitement to it to
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: be running around uptown with your friends and like, ah,
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: we'll go get you a watermelon, and everybody, I'll wait
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: right here at the parking lot.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: We'll be back.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: So we go out there the second night, and then
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: under this night light in front of the barn, this
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: humongous watermelon and I don't remember seeing the night before,
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: but I mean, it's a target of opportunity, So we're going,
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: so we go. When we pick it up, my buddy
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: picks it up, and we start walking back across the fence,
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: and I turned around and somebody whistles real loud, and
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: I turn around looking there's you can see the glow
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: of a cigarette in the hall of that barn. That's
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: all you see is a big glow, red glow. Somebody
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: smoking a cigarette.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: That's the owner of the watermelon.
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: Yeah, And the next thing we heard was a shotgun boom.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: What happened to the watermelon, I don't know. It could
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: have been made out of plastic, I don't know.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: But when we headed to the fence, when I finally
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: got through it, my buddy sounded like a typewriter going
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: down that gravel road in front of me, just out
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: of sight.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: But I grew up not terribly fire from my wife
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: and uh sometimes I'll tell her things and she's like,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: you know, and I was telling her about I said, yay,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: if you get a watermelon, know you put it in
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the creek and cool it off or the creek. She's like,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I don't know, you stand out. Yeah, like how was
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: this all occurring? Like so close together? But just like
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: stuff I have, Like my wife used to like, all right,
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: take that watermelon sink in the creek. She asked me,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: She said, did you grow up on the little house
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: on the All right, thanks for.
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: Coming on, Hansei, Yeah, thank you, thanks for having me.

- 1:13:28Speaker 1: stay tuned for rough cuts coming out and that video
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I just played from the mind of a chef, but
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: this is from the mind to Hansey.
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: No, yeah, that's that's good. But it's yeah, it's a
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: good team effort. We've it's been in a pretty huge collaboration.
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: So mind mind of post production, find of mind of
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: Steve slash.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Post You're like someone receiving an oscar, so much experience
