- 0:32Speaker 1: are you?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm doing great, Matt. How are you, buddy?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm doing awesome. I'm going to start with what happened
- 0:39Speaker 1: in the Meadowlands on Sunday. The Saints got down 10.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They scored 34 unanswered. And then they have to hold
- 0:48Speaker 1: on and hold their breath despite being up 24 in
- 0:50Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, should I feel good because they won
- 0:55Speaker 1: a game in the NFL? Or should I be really,
- 0:59Speaker 1: really concerned because of how that thing ended?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I think you need to put this in layers, my man.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Get down early 10 to nothing. Turn it around, what
- 1:11Speaker 2: was it, just before halftime, I think, when they got
- 1:14Speaker 2: the special teams to tie it at 10. the turnover
- 1:18Speaker 2: going in score, say your thing in momentum changes. And
- 1:21Speaker 2: then you go on that, obviously what was a 34
- 1:24Speaker 2: unanswered points or whatever it was. And then as a
- 1:28Speaker 2: team still trying to learn, and I know people think, well,
- 1:31Speaker 2: do you really need that to learn to win? You do.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And this is a group, I mean, that hasn't been
- 1:36Speaker 2: together long and it was on the road, right? I mean,
- 1:41Speaker 2: it is a, it is a lot to gather from it,
- 1:44Speaker 2: but when you, You know, hang 34. You look at
- 1:47Speaker 2: that part of it and say, look what we did.
- 1:48Speaker 2: 34 and answer. We put our foot down. We ran
- 1:50Speaker 2: the ball pretty effectively. Our quarterback protected it for the
- 1:54Speaker 2: most part. We did a lot of good things, special teams.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden, bam, you decide to
- 2:00Speaker 2: get comfortable. Matt, how often do we see this in
- 2:02Speaker 2: the league? We see it all the frigging time where
- 2:06Speaker 2: a team will go up and then they'll get a
- 2:08Speaker 2: little bit protective of the football, protective of the play calling,
- 2:11Speaker 2: less aggressive. And you're really playing not to lose at
- 2:14Speaker 2: that point. And then you get a quarterback who comes
- 2:17Speaker 2: in that played unconscious and didn't need to do anything
- 2:20Speaker 2: because he knew that he had nothing to lose. He's
- 2:22Speaker 2: coming off the bench. He's been traded. He doesn't know
- 2:26Speaker 2: what the future holds. And all the talk on him is,
- 2:28Speaker 2: was he a first-round bust? You're down. So you just
- 2:31Speaker 2: drop back and let it rip. He needs to take that,
- 2:33Speaker 2: meaning McCarthy, to another level in his own game for him.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But I digress. So I think you walk away saying,
- 2:40Speaker 2: look around the league, Matt. Look on Saturdays. I know
- 2:42Speaker 2: which we'll get to it on Sundays. And I know
- 2:45Speaker 2: you do this. look at all the stuff. The charges
- 2:48Speaker 2: can't get a win. Buffalo was taken to the brink
- 2:50Speaker 2: by the Raiders. The 49ers take care of this. The
- 2:53Speaker 2: Rams lose Arizona. I mean, it's a weekly thing. Cleveland
- 2:57Speaker 2: Browns are in first place. So while it doesn't make
- 3:00Speaker 2: it any better for the saints, the truth is it's
- 3:02Speaker 2: hard to win, man. It is. And it's hard to
- 3:05Speaker 2: win consistently. And they are, I believe still learning how
- 3:08Speaker 2: to win. It looked like a very, should I say
- 3:13Speaker 2: energetic team to take care of their business at the beginning.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And it looked like a immature team that didn't know
- 3:20Speaker 2: how to handle the success that they were taking, you know,
- 3:24Speaker 2: that they were taking care of in that game. And
- 3:26Speaker 2: this is a league where boom, boom, boom, right back
- 3:28Speaker 2: to it, 17 straight points. And they're back in it
- 3:31Speaker 2: before you know it, you got to get a stop
- 3:33Speaker 2: late in the game. So there, I think there's, if
- 3:35Speaker 2: you compartmentalize and go almost quarter by quarter, but half
- 3:39Speaker 2: by half an area, you know, certain parts of the game,
- 3:43Speaker 2: I think you've come away with the same hard to win.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You'll take it anytime. You can get it when you
- 3:46Speaker 2: do it like that on the road, but you on
- 3:50Speaker 2: the flight home, you're looking at the tape and you're
- 3:51Speaker 2: also getting right back in because there is a lot
- 3:54Speaker 2: not to like, but there was quite a bit to like,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and listen, I'd rather have an ugly win, which it was,
- 4:03Speaker 2: and the hold on win, then I would, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: Hey man, we scored 41, but we lost 44, 41.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Nobody feels good about that coming home. So, I'll take it.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And I thought it was a good win, one they needed,
- 4:15Speaker 2: but it was far from a perfect game. But right
- 4:18Speaker 2: now the Saints are just trying to scrap together wins.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Perfect doesn't matter because they're not going to see that
- 4:22Speaker 2: much this year.
- 4:23Speaker 1: The other interesting conversation, talking point so far in the
- 4:28Speaker 1: past 48 hours, Sean, has been Kellen Moore's decision to
- 4:31Speaker 1: pull some of the starters with 11 minutes to go.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Now we're up 24, and McCarthy had gone in for Jameis,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and so the Saints responded by pulling Shuck and putting
- 4:41Speaker 1: in Spencer Rattler and a few other players. Look, it's
- 4:43Speaker 1: the NFL. There's only 53. It's not like there's wholesale changes.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But they pulled Shuck and some others. What's your thought
- 4:49Speaker 1: on that decision with 11 minutes to go to make
- 4:52Speaker 1: those changes?
- 4:54Speaker 2: I get the one part of it that I get
- 4:57Speaker 2: where you're thinking, okay, we're not extremely deep in some positions.
- 5:04Speaker 2: and we're winning this game. I'm going to trust my
- 5:06Speaker 2: defense to get us off the damn field when it matters,
- 5:09Speaker 2: even though it started. I'm sure at some point, you're like, damn,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know what happens if it gets tied or what
- 5:14Speaker 2: have you. We go to overtime. It's like, well, you
- 5:16Speaker 2: know who's coming back in the game. But I'm sure
- 5:19Speaker 2: that that starts to kick in as you're rolling along
- 5:22Speaker 2: to finish it out. There's a part of the defense
- 5:26Speaker 2: and the team saying, okay, you believe in us, but
- 5:28Speaker 2: there's also that built-in casual that happens. Now the backups
- 5:31Speaker 2: are coming in playing like, with their hair on fire
- 5:34Speaker 2: because they want to make an impression. But even with
- 5:36Speaker 2: that lead, you're like, well, really, what kind of impression
- 5:39Speaker 2: can I make? I can't really make one because I'm
- 5:43Speaker 2: expected to go in there and hold it down, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: they didn't, so it almost became a negative for them.
- 5:48Speaker 2: But I see you're trying attrition. You don't want injuries
- 5:52Speaker 2: to take place. But I'm under the belief that they're
- 5:57Speaker 2: not good enough to be resting starters. I understand they're
- 6:00Speaker 2: in harm's way, but that's the way it is every game. Now,
- 6:03Speaker 2: if there's four minutes to go, Matt, and you're up 24,
- 6:06Speaker 2: I get it. Hand the ball off, get out of
- 6:08Speaker 2: the damn building, and go home. But I still think that,
- 6:11Speaker 2: to me, felt a little... And after they went through,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know, they go score, and all of a sudden
- 6:15Speaker 2: you say, okay, is there a little bit of a
- 6:17Speaker 2: momentum switch? We're starting to see complacency. And I know
- 6:19Speaker 2: it's hard to put guys back in, and that's the
- 6:22Speaker 2: challenge if you're the head coach. Like, when do I
- 6:25Speaker 2: put them back in, or when do I make this decision?
- 6:27Speaker 2: So for me... I usually lean towards this. Isn't the
- 6:31Speaker 2: Rams and Stepford and miles, Garrett banged up and Aaron
- 6:34Speaker 2: Donald come back out of retirement. We're up 24. Very
- 6:38Speaker 2: good right now. Anyway, I'll give them a little rest,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but on a Saints team, I still think they're learning
- 6:42Speaker 2: how to play. Hell, I would, for me, I would
- 6:45Speaker 2: have left them in and tried to extend the lead.
- 6:48Speaker 2: So on that plane flight, or when you're coming home
- 6:50Speaker 2: or when you're, when you take care of that and
- 6:52Speaker 2: you're watching tape, you're like, okay, They not only knew
- 6:54Speaker 2: how to win, they knew how to put their foot
- 6:55Speaker 2: on the gas pedal and choke them out. But I
- 6:57Speaker 2: do get the understanding of this league. Injuries ruin a season.
- 7:02Speaker 2: A quarterback, a wide receiver, I get it. But I
- 7:06Speaker 2: still lean towards, Matty, of teams that don't know how
- 7:10Speaker 2: to win yet. I can guarantee you if it happened
- 7:14Speaker 2: again this week, he ain't pulling his starter. He would
- 7:17Speaker 2: not do that. I think that the message was sent.
- 7:20Speaker 2: It's too precious. The leads are too precious and it's
- 7:23Speaker 2: too hard to win. keep those guys in there inside
- 7:26Speaker 2: of five minutes. I get it with a whole quarter
- 7:28Speaker 2: to go. I don't think because your backups aren't taking
- 7:30Speaker 2: you to where you want to go. And maybe the
- 7:32Speaker 2: starters aren't either, but you got a better chance. I
- 7:34Speaker 2: would have left them.
- 7:35Speaker 1: In one more on, on the saints giant, Sean. I'm
- 7:39Speaker 1: glad you mentioned McCarthy who came in with 11 minutes
- 7:42Speaker 1: to go, as we just talked about and threw for
- 7:44Speaker 1: 242 yards in 11 minutes of game time.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yep.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's hard. It That's pacing for 1,000 yards if he
- 7:55Speaker 1: plays the whole game. Now, obviously, that's ridiculous in the circumstances.
- 7:59Speaker 1: But what should I make of that? We're talking so
- 8:03Speaker 1: much about the offense, but what do you make of that?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Inexcusable. It just is. And I know that the Homer fans,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and I get it, are going to say, well, come on,
- 8:15Speaker 2: you're in mop-up time. Well, mop-up time became uh-oh time
- 8:19Speaker 2: as the game went on. What you do, you try
- 8:22Speaker 2: to not allow that to creep in, get a few
- 8:24Speaker 2: three and outs early, and then he can throw for
- 8:27Speaker 2: 140 yards in the last six minutes, fine. But what happens, again,
- 8:30Speaker 2: back to casual, is you don't get your hands on
- 8:33Speaker 2: guys enough. You're a little casual in your tackling. You're
- 8:36Speaker 2: not breaking down in the secondary. And as we know,
- 8:40Speaker 2: if you're playing soft coverage at times, then average quarterbacks
- 8:46Speaker 2: will beat you in this league if you don't pressure them.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Average quarterbacks will. Good ones will beat you up. Great
- 8:52Speaker 2: ones will destroy you and steal your soul. And McCarthy's
- 8:55Speaker 2: trying to find himself and going in. I've been in
- 8:58Speaker 2: those situations now where you go in and your career
- 9:00Speaker 2: like early and you're like, well, I got to lose, man.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm just going to go in here and let it rip.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And so the ball's coming out on time. McCarthy looked
- 9:07Speaker 2: like a starter in the league. Now I get the
- 9:09Speaker 2: lead and the rest of it, but we might've, you know, I,
- 9:12Speaker 2: if I'm the giants, I'm starting him now. Cause I
- 9:14Speaker 2: know who Jamis is, but I, I, I understand, but
- 9:18Speaker 2: you can't build in the excuse, this is a time
- 9:20Speaker 2: you can't go out there and say, it goes back
- 9:22Speaker 2: to your original, like, am I supposed to feel good?
- 9:24Speaker 2: If you're a defensive player on that game, now you're
- 9:26Speaker 2: grateful you got the last stop and the game is over.
- 9:29Speaker 2: But you're watching that tape and you're embarrassed. And as
- 9:32Speaker 2: a starter, you're talking to the guys who backed you
- 9:34Speaker 2: up saying, we can't do that. As a coach or
- 9:36Speaker 2: a coordinator, you're in the group making sure they understand
- 9:40Speaker 2: the importance because every single time that you're auditioning, it's
- 9:43Speaker 2: your resume. and to allow that to happen to a
- 9:47Speaker 2: guy that most people wondered how he could throw, if
- 9:49Speaker 2: he could throw up in the league because of his
- 9:50Speaker 2: struggles in Minnesota, and they quit on him too quickly.
- 9:53Speaker 2: that those are the times you got to get a
- 9:56Speaker 2: pick six. You got to pressure them. You got to
- 9:58Speaker 2: do all you can. I didn't like it. And so
- 10:00Speaker 2: I walked away at the same feeling, man, it's a
- 10:02Speaker 2: big win. You need it down the road. It's a really,
- 10:11Speaker 2: but if you're really on that plane home, looking at
- 10:13Speaker 2: your surface and you're watching it and you're a hard
- 10:15Speaker 2: judge of yourself and you're a defensive player, let alone
- 10:19Speaker 2: he said that for the last 11, you let them
- 10:21Speaker 2: come back and jump back into it. You're really disappointed
- 10:24Speaker 2: with the overall, I don't even want to say effort,
- 10:26Speaker 2: the result. You just can't have it. I don't care
- 10:28Speaker 2: who it is. I don't care if it's Matt Stafford.
- 10:30Speaker 2: You don't allow a guy like that to throw for
- 10:32Speaker 2: 250 yards in less than a quarter because that'll stick
- 10:35Speaker 2: with you. What do you think the rest of the
- 10:37Speaker 2: league is going to do? Even though it was late,
- 10:39Speaker 2: and if you're playing like that, the thought process is, well,
- 10:43Speaker 2: we'll find some blood and water when we play them.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I just thought it was a very poor execution and
- 10:50Speaker 2: way too casual in the fourth quarter for the entire
- 10:53Speaker 2: football team, probably the coaching staff included.
