Speaker 1: Introduction of Chronicles of Crime and Criminals Number one, full
• 0:05
Speaker 1: and authentic account of the murder by Henry Wainwright of
• 0:08
Speaker 1: his mistress Harriet Lane, and an extended account of the
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Whitechapel murders by the infamous Jack the Ripper. Introduction. Crime
• 0:18
Speaker 1: is the transgression by individuals of laws made for the
• 0:22
Speaker 1: protection and good of the community. Every country, civilized and uncivilized,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: The whole world at large and in all ages, has
• 0:30
Speaker 1: been cursed with crime, from Cain, the first murderer, to
• 0:33
Speaker 1: the last case reported in the daily newspaper. For years,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: this country has been flooded with literature professing to be
• 0:41
Speaker 1: chronicles of crime, but in reality mere sensational products of
• 0:46
Speaker 1: the imagination. In plain words, the crimes have been manufactured
• 0:50
Speaker 1: for the occasion. In these volumes, however, the truth will
• 0:54
Speaker 1: be strictly adhered to, and every story given can be
• 0:57
Speaker 1: relied upon as strictly authentic, thus confirming the old maxim
• 1:02
Speaker 1: that truth is stranger than fiction. An extended list of
• 1:06
Speaker 1: the subjects to be dealt with in future volumes will
• 1:09
Speaker 1: be found on page three of cover end of introduction.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: An account of the murder of Harriet Lane and arrest
• 1:18
Speaker 1: trial and execution of Henry Wainwright in the East end
• 1:22
Speaker 1: of London, in a busy and populous region. The subject
• 1:26
Speaker 1: of our sketch had done a large business as a
• 1:29
Speaker 1: brushmaker at number two fifteen Whitechapel Road. Up to the
• 1:33
Speaker 1: time of his arrest, nothing was known against his character,
• 1:37
Speaker 1: and he was looked upon as an honest, upright and
• 1:40
Speaker 1: industrious citizen. The deed for which he was tried and
• 1:45
Speaker 1: afterwards executed was very deliberately planned and diabolically carried out,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: but the precautions taken to ensure concealment, although elaborate, were unsuccessful,
• 1:57
Speaker 1: partly through his own carelessness, partly through the ill luck
• 2:01
Speaker 1: that will often mar the best combinations. There was no
• 2:05
Speaker 1: sort of suspicion against Wainwright, although a woman with whom
• 2:09
Speaker 1: he was on intimate terms had been missing for about
• 2:12
Speaker 1: a year. Her disappearance had been explained without the slightest
• 2:16
Speaker 1: suspicion that a dastardly murder had been done. Just at
• 2:20
Speaker 1: this time, September eighteen ninety five, Wainwright had taken new
• 2:24
Speaker 1: premises across the river at Southwark, he having met with
• 2:28
Speaker 1: reverses in business and bankruptcy, and it was when he
• 2:32
Speaker 1: sought the assistance of a fellow workman once in his
• 2:35
Speaker 1: own employ to help him in a small job at
• 2:38
Speaker 1: his old premises that the fact of foul play was
• 2:42
Speaker 1: first brought to light. This man, Stokes by name, accompanied
• 2:47
Speaker 1: Wainwright to two fifteen Whitechapel Road and entered the workshop
• 2:51
Speaker 1: on the ground floor. The job for Stokes was to
• 2:54
Speaker 1: help carry out a couple of heavy parcels that lay
• 2:56
Speaker 1: on the floor, wrapped up in black American cloth and
• 3:00
Speaker 1: covered with strong rope. Pick him up, will you, said Wainwright.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Only just wait while I see if the land is clear.
• 3:07
Speaker 1: There's that magging old Johnson in the court. I don't
• 3:10
Speaker 1: want to see him. Stokes tied the parcels, but protested
• 3:14
Speaker 1: they were too heavy. Wainwright lent him a hand, and
• 3:17
Speaker 1: the pair carried them into the street as far as
• 3:20
Speaker 1: the church in the Whitechapel Road. Stop you hold on
• 3:24
Speaker 1: here while I hail a cab, said Wainwright, and left
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Stokes alone with the parcels. Long afterwards, just before Wainwright's execution,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Stokes wrote him a curious letter detailing his sensations. While
• 3:37
Speaker 1: waiting by the church. Something within him, he declared, some
• 3:41
Speaker 1: mysterious voice, some hidden but imperious impulse, urged him to
• 3:46
Speaker 1: examine the parcels. He was not satisfied about them. Wainwright
• 3:50
Speaker 1: had said they contained hair bristles for brush making, had
• 3:54
Speaker 1: cautioned him not to drop them lest they should break.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: How could bristles break? They gave off off a strong smell,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: a peculiar offensive odor. Wainwright had said this was done
• 4:05
Speaker 1: due to their having been so long under the straw,
• 4:08
Speaker 1: But bristles could never smell this way again. Another suspicious
• 4:13
Speaker 1: circumstance occurred to him before leaving the workshop in Whitechapel Road.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: Wainwright had given him a spade, a hammer, and chopper
• 4:22
Speaker 1: and told him to sell them for what they would fetch.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: There was suspicious stuff on the chopper, a sticky sort
• 4:28
Speaker 1: of dirt which smelt badly. A shudder went through him.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: Was it blood? As he stood there, irresolute and unhappy,
• 4:37
Speaker 1: the voice kept constantly saying, open that parcel, Open it,
• 4:41
Speaker 1: open it, open it. He yielded. He could not help himself.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: He pulled all the wrappers aside and saw a human head,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: the first crop of light hair, then the entire head.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: It must be murder. Nothing less than cruel, bloody murder.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: This was Stoke's immediate conclusion, and he was so terrified
• 5:03
Speaker 1: by his shocking discovery that so he said his hair
• 5:07
Speaker 1: stood on end and his hat fell off. After the
• 5:11
Speaker 1: first glimpse, he could not resist making a closer scrutiny
• 5:14
Speaker 1: of the contents. He saw the head again, and more
• 5:17
Speaker 1: plainly a severed head. The short hair was much matted
• 5:22
Speaker 1: and encrusted with earth and dirt. Nor was the head
• 5:25
Speaker 1: the only horror within the parcel. Looking a little further,
• 5:29
Speaker 1: he came upon a human hand, and then a human arm.
• 5:33
Speaker 1: Then Wainwright returned, bringing a cab. Quite without suspicion. He
• 5:38
Speaker 1: told Stokes to put the parcels into the cab and
• 5:40
Speaker 1: got in himself, saying sharply to the driver, now cabby
• 5:44
Speaker 1: to the commercial road, all you know, and you, Stokes,
• 5:48
Speaker 1: I'll come round to your place tonight. Stokes had missed
• 5:51
Speaker 1: his chance. He should have called for the police and
• 5:55
Speaker 1: at once given Wainwright into custody. When, afterwards asked by
• 6:00
Speaker 1: by the corner why he did not do so, he
• 6:02
Speaker 1: confessed he was afraid of Wainwright, who he knew to
• 6:05
Speaker 1: be a dangerous man. Now, Stokes still, urged by the small,
• 6:10
Speaker 1: still voice within, decided to pursue the cab. He ran
• 6:14
Speaker 1: after it at full speed and once gained a little
• 6:17
Speaker 1: as it stopped at Greenfield Street to pick up a
• 6:20
Speaker 1: woman who was waiting there. This woman, Alice Day, was
• 6:24
Speaker 1: afterwards arrested as an accomplice, but soon discharged, there being
• 6:28
Speaker 1: nothing to connect her with the crime. Again, the cab
• 6:32
Speaker 1: drove on Stokes, growing more and more breathless, behind down
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Aldgate Street, then towards Fenchurch Street, onto Leadenhall Street, and
• 6:41
Speaker 1: there it branched off to London Bridge and crossed the river.
• 6:45
Speaker 1: Stokes was taken for a lunatic as he raced along.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: Two policemen whom he met only laughed at him derisively.
• 6:53
Speaker 1: As he pointed to the cab ahead and gasped, what
• 6:55
Speaker 1: cab there ahead? Stop it? Murder parcels? Two parcels. He
• 7:01
Speaker 1: was now all but distanced, but once more the cab
• 7:04
Speaker 1: stopped at the Hop Exchange in the Borough. Stokes got
• 7:08
Speaker 1: within ten yards of it. Here there were two more policemen,
• 7:12
Speaker 1: and their sense of duty was stronger than that of
• 7:14
Speaker 1: their colleagues before mentioned. When Stokes appealed to them, they
• 7:19
Speaker 1: listened and were prepared to act. See that man, said Stokes.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: He pointed to Wainwright, who had alighted from the cab
• 7:26
Speaker 1: and with one parcel, had walked some thirty or forty
• 7:29
Speaker 1: yards in the direction of a shop still known as
• 7:32
Speaker 1: the Hen and Chickens. See him, hurry after him, Stop him.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: He's a murderer. See what he does with it. Stokes
• 7:41
Speaker 1: had done his part. It now was for the police
• 7:44
Speaker 1: to act. One constable followed promptly. The other took post
• 7:48
Speaker 1: and watched the cab. When Wainwright entered the Hen and Chickens,
• 7:52
Speaker 1: the first constable came back and rejoined the second at
• 7:56
Speaker 1: the cab. Presently Wainwright returned, smoking a cigar. He did
• 8:00
Speaker 1: not appear to notice the policeman, but, lifting out the
• 8:03
Speaker 1: second parcel, walked off again to the Hen and Chickens.
• 8:07
Speaker 1: The constables were now at his heels, and one asked,
• 8:10
Speaker 1: do you live in there? No, have you possession of
• 8:13
Speaker 1: the premises? I have and you haven't, answered Wainwright, with
• 8:18
Speaker 1: much effrontery, What is in that parcel? What have you
• 8:21
Speaker 1: done with the other? You go into the housemate and
• 8:24
Speaker 1: see if it's there. While I look at this went
• 8:26
Speaker 1: on the policeman. Don't touch it, cried Wainwright. Ask no questions,
• 8:31
Speaker 1: let me alone, let me go. I'll give fifty pounds,
• 8:35
Speaker 1: a hundred pounds, two hundred pounds, anything, and plank down
• 8:39
Speaker 1: the money at once. Only let me go. To offer
• 8:43
Speaker 1: a policeman a bribe is perhaps the safest way to
• 8:46
Speaker 1: encourage his suspicion. Yes, the murderer's time had come. Within
• 8:52
Speaker 1: a few seconds, the parcel was torn open and the
• 8:55
Speaker 1: ghastly contents exposed. Wainwright's arrest followed then and there, and
• 9:01
Speaker 1: the parcels were taken to the police station. On examination,
• 9:05
Speaker 1: one was found to contain the trunk of a human body,
• 9:08
Speaker 1: and the other the remaining parts the whole, forming a
• 9:12
Speaker 1: ghastly spectacle and gruesome evidence of a cruel and dastardly murder.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: The remains were those of a female. Two bullet holes
• 9:21
Speaker 1: were found in the brain and a third at the
• 9:24
Speaker 1: back of the head. The throat had also been cut.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: It was a severe wound inflicted with great violence. Meanwhile,
• 9:32
Speaker 1: the search of Wainwright's Whitechapel premises had been actively prosecuted.
• 9:37
Speaker 1: With one of the keys taken from his pocket, the
• 9:40
Speaker 1: back door was opened and the theater of his crime
• 9:43
Speaker 1: entered about twenty feet from the door. It was at
• 9:46
Speaker 1: once seen that a part of the flooring had been
• 9:49
Speaker 1: taken up recently, roughly and hastily replaced. The boards were
• 9:53
Speaker 1: speedily again removed. An open grave, but lately used yawned
• 9:58
Speaker 1: beneath the earth was largely mixed with chloride of lime.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: The murderer had made a fatal mistake. He expected chloride
• 10:07
Speaker 1: of lime to have quickly eaten up the evidence of
• 10:10
Speaker 1: his revolting crime, but it had just the contrary effect.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: The dismembered parts were effectually preserved. The murderer, by his
• 10:19
Speaker 1: stupidity and want of knowledge, had forged the change of
• 10:22
Speaker 1: guilt around him, and had compassed his own destruction. Various
• 10:27
Speaker 1: murderous implements were found on the spot, a new spade
• 10:31
Speaker 1: recently used, an open pocket knife, a chopper or cleaver
• 10:35
Speaker 1: on which was much sticky, fleshy matter undoubtedly congealed blood
• 10:40
Speaker 1: in the corner just behind the back door. On removing
• 10:44
Speaker 1: the rubbish, many splotches of blood were found, and every
• 10:47
Speaker 1: evidence went to prove the certainty and enormity of a
• 10:51
Speaker 1: great crime. But who was the woman who was the victim?
• 10:55
Speaker 1: Of this foul fiend. A man named Taylor gave the
• 10:59
Speaker 1: first clue to the mystery. He thought the remains might
• 11:02
Speaker 1: be those of his sister in law, Harriet Lane. She
• 11:06
Speaker 1: had been missing about twelve months. She had been intimate
• 11:09
Speaker 1: with Wainwright. His description of her was minute and particular.
• 11:14
Speaker 1: The police, without hesitation, allowed him to view the remains
• 11:18
Speaker 1: at once. He identified them as those of Harriet Lane.
• 11:23
Speaker 1: He also identified various articles of dress found in the
• 11:27
Speaker 1: grave and in the house. Harriet Lane had worn ear rings,
• 11:32
Speaker 1: and two of these ornaments were picked out of the
• 11:34
Speaker 1: grate in the fireplace. She wore a redding ring and keeper.
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Both of these were found in the grave. A number
• 11:41
Speaker 1: of Harriet Lane's relatives soon gave corroborative testimony. Now to
• 11:46
Speaker 1: prove the connection between the murderer and his victim, the
• 11:50
Speaker 1: chain of identity was complete. It was proved beyond doubt
• 11:54
Speaker 1: that Wainwright had been intimate with her for a long time,
• 11:58
Speaker 1: and that she had left her last life lodgings in
• 12:00
Speaker 1: Sydney Square Mile End, with the avowed intention of going
• 12:04
Speaker 1: to live with Wainwright at two fifteen Whitechapel Road. This
• 12:09
Speaker 1: was on eleventh September eighteen seventy four. She was never
• 12:13
Speaker 1: seen alive after that day. Nothing had been heard of
• 12:17
Speaker 1: her since, although on good terms with her relatives, she
• 12:21
Speaker 1: had entirely disappeared. After a time, missus Taylor went to
• 12:25
Speaker 1: Wainwright and asked after her sister. He said that he
• 12:29
Speaker 1: had given her money to go to the seaside for
• 12:31
Speaker 1: a holiday. Two months later she went again. Wainwright said
• 12:35
Speaker 1: Harriet had gone off with a gentleman who had come
• 12:38
Speaker 1: into a fortune. Old Laane, her father had also been
• 12:42
Speaker 1: to Wainwright demanding his daughter dead or alive. Wainwright put
• 12:47
Speaker 1: him off with another story. He produced telegrams to prove
• 12:50
Speaker 1: his story, but he read them out himself. All these
• 12:54
Speaker 1: were lies in plain English, most damnable lies. The poor
• 12:59
Speaker 1: victim had long lane in her lonely grave. The telegrams
• 13:03
Speaker 1: mentioned were proved to have been written by Wainwright's brother Thomas,
• 13:08
Speaker 1: who was afterwards tried and sent to penal servitude as
• 13:11
Speaker 1: an accomplice of this cruel murder. The web was tightening
• 13:16
Speaker 1: long before the trial. It had been woven around Henry Wainwright.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: Justice was about to be done, and that right speedily.
• 13:24
Speaker 1: There was proof that he bought a quantity of chloride
• 13:27
Speaker 1: of lime on tenth September, the night previous to the crime,
• 13:31
Speaker 1: also an axe and spade. A man working in a
• 13:35
Speaker 1: shed next to two fifteen Whitechapel Road could swear to
• 13:38
Speaker 1: hearing reports of pistol shots. On the evening of eleventh
• 13:42
Speaker 1: of September. Two shots were fired in rapid succession. The
• 13:46
Speaker 1: few hares found on the spade were found to correspond
• 13:50
Speaker 1: with those of the poor victim's head, and the sticky
• 13:53
Speaker 1: matter found on the chopper or cleaver was blood, yes,
• 13:57
Speaker 1: human blood. A strange story came out of the course
• 14:01
Speaker 1: of the investigation, which also told against Wainwright, and is
• 14:05
Speaker 1: another evidence of the keen instinct or great sagacity of
• 14:09
Speaker 1: a dog. On October eighteen seventy four, while Wainwright still
• 14:14
Speaker 1: occupied two fifteen Whitechapel Road for business purposes, his manager
• 14:19
Speaker 1: owned a dog who was in a state of continued restlessness.
• 14:23
Speaker 1: While in the workshop, he was forever scratching at the
• 14:26
Speaker 1: boards of the flooring just above the place where the
• 14:29
Speaker 1: grave had been made. It was supposed the dog was
• 14:32
Speaker 1: after rats. At last, the dog disappeared. The manager and
• 14:37
Speaker 1: his wife went out one evening leaving the dog with Wainwright,
• 14:41
Speaker 1: who without doubt made away with it. It was never
• 14:45
Speaker 1: seen again. Wainwright, when first arrested by the police, showed
• 14:49
Speaker 1: great self possession. There were no signs of apprehension about him.
• 14:53
Speaker 1: His features showed only a sort of half awakened attention.
• 14:57
Speaker 1: He occasionally bit his lips and unconsciously rubbed one hand
• 15:02
Speaker 1: over the other. At his final arraignment, his appearance had
• 15:05
Speaker 1: totally changed. He had grown haggard and careworn, and was
• 15:09
Speaker 1: unmistakably anxious for the result. His trial commenced at the
• 15:14
Speaker 1: Old Bailey on the twenty second of November and was
• 15:17
Speaker 1: finished December first, eighteen seventy five. His guilt was proved
• 15:21
Speaker 1: to the satisfaction of the court, and the jury had
• 15:24
Speaker 1: no hesitation as to their verdict. They unanimously found him guilty,
• 15:29
Speaker 1: and Lord Chief Justice Cockburn sentenced him to be hanged
• 15:33
Speaker 1: December twenty second, on which date this miss Cretan met
• 15:37
Speaker 1: the fate he so richly deserved. Wainwright solemnly declared that
• 15:42
Speaker 1: he was innocent. He used strong and remarkable language. I
• 15:46
Speaker 1: will only say, standing as I do now upon the
• 15:49
Speaker 1: brink of eternity, that I swear I am not the
• 15:53
Speaker 1: murderer of the remains found in my possession. I swear
• 15:57
Speaker 1: I have never fired a pistol shot in my life.
• 16:00
Speaker 1: I swear also that I did not bury the mutilated remains,
• 16:05
Speaker 1: nor did I exume them. He persisted in this denial
• 16:09
Speaker 1: almost to the last. Just before going to the scaffold,
• 16:13
Speaker 1: he confessed he deserved his fate, but still he would
• 16:17
Speaker 1: not admit that he was to the fullest extent guilty
• 16:20
Speaker 1: of the murder. It was supposed at the time, and
• 16:24
Speaker 1: the impression has survived that the crime was not his
• 16:27
Speaker 1: handiwork alone, that his brother Thomas, who stood with him
• 16:31
Speaker 1: in the dock, and who was sentenced as an accessory
• 16:34
Speaker 1: to seven years penal servitude, had taken an active part
• 16:38
Speaker 1: in the murder, had perhaps been the principle in committing
• 16:42
Speaker 1: the deed. One curious feature in the Wainwright case was
• 16:46
Speaker 1: the outward respectability of the accused. He was shown in
• 16:50
Speaker 1: the course of his trial to be a man of
• 16:52
Speaker 1: notorious immoral life, Yet for years he had posed as
• 16:56
Speaker 1: a prominent Christian and member of many religious lisas societies
• 17:00
Speaker 1: in the East End of London, and was popular in
• 17:03
Speaker 1: that district for his recitations and amateur performances on their
• 17:08
Speaker 1: behalf in the interest of religion. Thus perished one of
• 17:12
Speaker 1: the greatest scoundrels that ever existed, and one who had
• 17:16
Speaker 1: long lived the life of a profound hypocrite. In this case,
• 17:20
Speaker 1: as we see, the murder was brought to light almost
• 17:23
Speaker 1: by chance, and the guilty scoundrel punished. But many crimes
• 17:27
Speaker 1: are committed in the great cities of the world for
• 17:30
Speaker 1: which no one is ever brought to account, and they
• 17:33
Speaker 1: pass on as mysteries. In the great field of crime,
• 17:37
Speaker 1: many cases have happened where criminals have sought concealment of
• 17:40
Speaker 1: their victim's remains by burial and other modes of disposal,
• 17:45
Speaker 1: And wonderful cases of the defeat of such attempts have transpired.
• 17:49
Speaker 1: Just here. Perhaps it will be interesting to note one
• 17:53
Speaker 1: or two most remarkable cases, not only in London, but
• 17:57
Speaker 1: in Paris and elsewhere. Many years ago, in London, two
• 18:01
Speaker 1: boys rowing a boat up the rither Thames came upon
• 18:04
Speaker 1: a carpet bag lying caught upon one of the buttresses
• 18:08
Speaker 1: of Waterloo Bridge. The carpet bag was hanging just above
• 18:12
Speaker 1: the water. It had been placed there overnight or someone
• 18:15
Speaker 1: from above had thrown the bag down and it had
• 18:19
Speaker 1: lodged on the buttress of the bridge. The boys got
• 18:22
Speaker 1: possession of it, thinking they had got a prize. It
• 18:25
Speaker 1: was locked and corded, the rope, having been trailing in
• 18:28
Speaker 1: the water when first seen. The cord was cut, the
• 18:31
Speaker 1: lock forced, and the contents of the bag laid bare.
• 18:35
Speaker 1: These were the mutilated fragments of a human body. They
• 18:38
Speaker 1: were chopped up into a number of pieces. The police
• 18:42
Speaker 1: were called, who took the fine to the police station.
• 18:45
Speaker 1: On examination by a medical man, it was found that
• 18:49
Speaker 1: the parts belonged, all of them to the same body.
• 18:52
Speaker 1: There were twenty three pieces in all, mostly bones with
• 18:56
Speaker 1: flesh adhering to them. They had been sawn or chocknp
• 19:00
Speaker 1: into small pieces. Without doubt the mutilation was done to
• 19:04
Speaker 1: destroy identification. The hands, feet, and head were missing. There
• 19:09
Speaker 1: was nothing left that could well assist identification, no marks
• 19:13
Speaker 1: or peculiarities, nothing beyond the fact that the deceased was
• 19:17
Speaker 1: a dark and hairy man. There was, however, plainly visible
• 19:22
Speaker 1: a knife stab between the fourth and fifth ribs, undoubtedly
• 19:27
Speaker 1: the cause of death, its direction plainly showing that it
• 19:30
Speaker 1: must have entered the heart. It was further prooved that
• 19:33
Speaker 1: the remains had been partially boiled and subsequently salted or
• 19:37
Speaker 1: placed in brine. The clothes were those of a foreigner.
• 19:41
Speaker 1: They were much cut and horn and were all more
• 19:44
Speaker 1: or less blood stained. Most of the blood stains were
• 19:47
Speaker 1: on the inside. The knife had penetrated clean through the
• 19:51
Speaker 1: clothes while on the body and into the heart. A
• 19:54
Speaker 1: reward of three hundred pounds was offered for the discovery
• 19:58
Speaker 1: of the murderer, but it was white without effect. The
• 20:01
Speaker 1: crime was never brought home to anyone. The police had
• 20:05
Speaker 1: reason to believe that the man murdered was a sailor
• 20:08
Speaker 1: belonging to some ship then lying in the Thames. Nothing
• 20:12
Speaker 1: that could lead to identification was forthcoming, and failing this,
• 20:16
Speaker 1: the mystery was never solved. Another case in London, known
• 20:20
Speaker 1: as the Battersea mystery, happened just prior to the Wainwright murder.
• 20:25
Speaker 1: A package containing human remains was found upon the mud
• 20:28
Speaker 1: banks of the Thames near Battersea water Works. It was
• 20:32
Speaker 1: pronounced by the doctors to be the mutilated trunk of
• 20:35
Speaker 1: a female and to have been barely twelve hours in
• 20:38
Speaker 1: the water. More discoveries rapidly followed. The lungs were found
• 20:43
Speaker 1: one under Old Battersea Bridge, the other near the Battersea
• 20:47
Speaker 1: Railway pier. These all corresponded and were easily pieced together
• 20:52
Speaker 1: as parts of the same body. The head had been severed,
• 20:56
Speaker 1: a sharp knife and saw had been used. The face
• 21:00
Speaker 1: of half the head had floated down below Limehouse and
• 21:03
Speaker 1: was there picked up. It was mutilated beyond all recognition.
• 21:08
Speaker 1: Other fragments, limbs and parts of limbs were found further
• 21:12
Speaker 1: down the river near the albert embankment, Rotherhithe, Greenwich, and
• 21:17
Speaker 1: near Woolwich. The body was put together by doctor Hayden
• 21:22
Speaker 1: and pronounced that of a female. The face, although much battered,
• 21:26
Speaker 1: bore the trace of a wound on the right temple.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: It had crushed in the skull and must have caused
• 21:32
Speaker 1: instantaneous death. The body had evidently been cut up and
• 21:37
Speaker 1: piece by piece thrown into the river. From that day
• 21:40
Speaker 1: to this no one has been suspected, much less arrested,
• 21:45
Speaker 1: for this most undoubted crime, and it adds one more
• 21:49
Speaker 1: to the long list of murder mysteries. In April eighteen
• 21:53
Speaker 1: seventy eight, human remains were found in a bedroom of
• 21:56
Speaker 1: the Hotel Janson Paris and in the room Polivo two
• 22:01
Speaker 1: legs and arms, a woman's wrapped in black glazed paper.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: Other articles were with them, a black petticoat and three
• 22:10
Speaker 1: shirts in red and blue stripes. The parcel was tied
• 22:13
Speaker 1: up with thread and old binding. These remains had been
• 22:17
Speaker 1: hidden in a cupboard and lay there just a fortnight.
• 22:21
Speaker 1: The fragments and articles were taken to the morgue and
• 22:24
Speaker 1: viewed day after day by the public. They were never identified,
• 22:29
Speaker 1: and the episode has long been forgotten. One evening in September,
• 22:34
Speaker 1: Madame Terrie, a respectable housewife in the Rue de la Chapelle, Paris,
• 22:39
Speaker 1: was seated at her doorway enjoying the cool evening, when
• 22:43
Speaker 1: she observed a man on the other side of the
• 22:45
Speaker 1: street very oddly engaged. He was strewing the roadway with
• 22:49
Speaker 1: scraps of meat. At the opening of a sewer, he
• 22:53
Speaker 1: threw down a larger piece which looked like a whole joint.
• 22:57
Speaker 1: Her suspicions were aroused, and seeking and acquaintance, they went
• 23:01
Speaker 1: together to report the circumstance to the Commissary of Police.
• 23:05
Speaker 1: Search was at once instituted. The result was the discovery
• 23:09
Speaker 1: of many fragments, all undoubtedly human remains, enough nearly to
• 23:14
Speaker 1: form the body the had alone been still wanting. Now
• 23:19
Speaker 1: Madame Terrie came forward with a strange statement. She had
• 23:22
Speaker 1: dreamt of nothing but the strange incident and had been
• 23:26
Speaker 1: haunted perpetually with the shadowy resemblance of the man with
• 23:30
Speaker 1: someone she knew. It was a police officer, a former
• 23:34
Speaker 1: neighbor of hers in the Rue de Royee. He lived
• 23:37
Speaker 1: next door, she said, a tall, stout man, a police
• 23:41
Speaker 1: sergeant who went in plain clothes. Was uncommonly like the
• 23:45
Speaker 1: man I saw the other night. Now it was remembered
• 23:48
Speaker 1: that a stout police officer named Provost was attached to
• 23:52
Speaker 1: the division which included the Rue de Royee. Provost was
• 23:56
Speaker 1: summoned from the police at the very moment. He was
• 23:59
Speaker 1: discussing the recent discovery and was saying, I would never
• 24:02
Speaker 1: allow myself be caught if I did it. If I
• 24:05
Speaker 1: killed a man, I would disfigure him so that no
• 24:08
Speaker 1: one would identify him. I'd cut him up and get
• 24:12
Speaker 1: rid of him in such a way that no one
• 24:14
Speaker 1: would find the pieces. He said, to cover up a
• 24:17
Speaker 1: crime was very easy, and truly that many murders were
• 24:21
Speaker 1: never discovered. He was confronted by Madame Teree, who at
• 24:26
Speaker 1: once identified him. Further inquiry brought to light the fact
• 24:30
Speaker 1: that Prevost was absent from duty the night missus Terree
• 24:34
Speaker 1: had seen the man distributing the scraps of meat. All
• 24:37
Speaker 1: his assurance left him then, and he confessed a crime.
• 24:41
Speaker 1: His victim was a jeweler's traveler named Lenobyl, and he
• 24:45
Speaker 1: killed him for a watch and chain and some glittering
• 24:48
Speaker 1: baubles which Lenobyl had offered for sale. The head was
• 24:52
Speaker 1: the sole portion of the murdered man's remains that was
• 24:55
Speaker 1: still undiscovered. Prevost was pressed to say what he had
• 24:59
Speaker 1: done with it. After a pause, he pointed silently to
• 25:03
Speaker 1: the fireplace. The head had been stuffed up the chimney.
• 25:06
Speaker 1: When it was dragged down, it is said to have
• 25:08
Speaker 1: looked exactly like a barber's block. The face was handsome,
• 25:13
Speaker 1: the features were perfectly regular, the complexion was as clear
• 25:17
Speaker 1: as wax. To complete the resemblance, the dark mustachios were
• 25:22
Speaker 1: carefully trimmed, and the deep toned chestnut hair was curled
• 25:26
Speaker 1: closely around the head. Prevost confessed that he had intended
• 25:30
Speaker 1: to boil the head so as to render it quite unrecognizable,
• 25:35
Speaker 1: but his prompt arrest prevented this extreme surprise was expressed
• 25:39
Speaker 1: by the police authorities at Prevost's confession. Till now he
• 25:43
Speaker 1: had borne an exemplary character, but now other suspicions were aroused.
• 25:49
Speaker 1: It was remembered that a woman with whom Provost was intimate,
• 25:53
Speaker 1: had disappeared soon after paying him a visit. By his confession,
• 25:57
Speaker 1: it was proved Prevost murdered her. The details of dismemberment
• 26:02
Speaker 1: are much the same as in Lenobyle's case. The fragments
• 26:06
Speaker 1: were distributed in the same way. The head, when severed
• 26:09
Speaker 1: from the body, was buried in the glacis of the
• 26:12
Speaker 1: old fortifications. Prevost obliterated the blood stains made in the
• 26:17
Speaker 1: process of cutting up by pouring ink on them. There's
• 26:21
Speaker 1: no doubt that Prevost would have enjoyed absolute immunity over
• 26:25
Speaker 1: his first crime had he not been so easily led
• 26:28
Speaker 1: into the second. No doubt, but for the chance recognition
• 26:32
Speaker 1: of Madame Terry, he would again have escaped scot free
• 26:37
Speaker 1: by an inscrutable providence. However, he was detected and paid
• 26:41
Speaker 1: the penalty of his crime under the guillotine. In Norwich, England,
• 26:46
Speaker 1: many years ago, a murder was committed which would have
• 26:49
Speaker 1: remained a mystery forever unsolved but for the voluntary confession
• 26:54
Speaker 1: of the criminal. In the year eighteen fifty one, a
• 26:58
Speaker 1: tailor resided in Norwich. A man named Sheward married to
• 27:02
Speaker 1: a woman older than himself, and they were somewhat strained
• 27:05
Speaker 1: in their relations. In the month of June, Missus Sheward disappeared.
• 27:10
Speaker 1: Sheward gave out that she had left him of her
• 27:13
Speaker 1: own accord, elope to London. This was not accepted as
• 27:17
Speaker 1: a final explanation by her relatives, yet no steps were
• 27:21
Speaker 1: taken against Sheward for the reasons to be now set forth.
• 27:25
Speaker 1: Very soon after Missus Sheward's disappearance, a quantity of human
• 27:30
Speaker 1: remains were found in the road leading to Lakenham, now
• 27:34
Speaker 1: a suburb of Norwich. First a hand, then a foot
• 27:38
Speaker 1: were found, and on several succeeding days bones and fragments
• 27:42
Speaker 1: of flesh were picked up. In the city and near Norwich.
• 27:46
Speaker 1: A number of portions were found, and it was presently
• 27:49
Speaker 1: possible to reconstitute the body for medical examination. The doctors
• 27:54
Speaker 1: gave their verdict without hesitation. It was the body of
• 27:58
Speaker 1: a young woman about twenty six years of age. The
• 28:01
Speaker 1: grounds on which this decision was made were published long afterwards.
• 28:06
Speaker 1: A surgeon disposed that the well defined understructures of the
• 28:10
Speaker 1: skin its delicacy, the neatness of the foot that of
• 28:14
Speaker 1: a person not accustomed to toil or to wear coarse,
• 28:17
Speaker 1: heavy shoes. The clean, well trimmed nails of both hands
• 28:21
Speaker 1: and feet led him to fix her age between sixteen
• 28:24
Speaker 1: and twenty six. Yet this same surgeon admitted at the
• 28:29
Speaker 1: assizes eighteen years afterwards that these appearances were not inconsistent
• 28:34
Speaker 1: with much greater age fifty four, even the age of
• 28:38
Speaker 1: Missus Sheeward, in fact, at the time she was first missed.
• 28:43
Speaker 1: Had the medical evidence been more accurate at that early date,
• 28:47
Speaker 1: the man Sheward would hardly have escaped stronger suspicion. It
• 28:51
Speaker 1: seems a little strange that a closer investigation was not made,
• 28:55
Speaker 1: seeing that the disappearance of Missus Sheeward and the discovery
• 28:59
Speaker 1: of the remains were so nearly coincident in time. But
• 29:03
Speaker 1: she Ward was esteemed as a mild, inoffensive creature, and
• 29:07
Speaker 1: his explanation of his wife's departure looked natural and plausible enough.
• 29:12
Speaker 1: So the murderer was left with his guilt, unharnessed and unmolested,
• 29:17
Speaker 1: but no doubt continually tormented by his own conscience, and
• 29:21
Speaker 1: reminded of his crime. Only a couple of years after
• 29:24
Speaker 1: the deed, his wife came into some money and he
• 29:27
Speaker 1: was called upon to produce her. It is easy to
• 29:30
Speaker 1: realize his terror, lest the old lame excuse of her
• 29:33
Speaker 1: elopement should not be accepted by the relatives and co beneficiaries.
• 29:39
Speaker 1: Still he held his ground in Norwich. By and by
• 29:42
Speaker 1: he married again, but still pursued his old trade. But
• 29:46
Speaker 1: it was observed that he grew more and more depressed,
• 29:49
Speaker 1: that he took to drinking, that he talked of leaving
• 29:52
Speaker 1: Norwich for good. And at the last he went to
• 29:55
Speaker 1: London and was led by imperious impulse to the very
• 29:59
Speaker 1: spot in wall Ulworth where it first made the acquaintance
• 30:02
Speaker 1: of his murdered wife. Then his crime was so forcibly
• 30:06
Speaker 1: brought home to him that he resolved to take his
• 30:09
Speaker 1: own wife. But the Almighty would not let him do it,
• 30:12
Speaker 1: So he told the authorities. For now he went and
• 30:15
Speaker 1: gave himself up to the authorities. Just eighteen years had
• 30:19
Speaker 1: elapsed since the crime. At the time of his surrender
• 30:23
Speaker 1: he had a razor in his pocket, but had not
• 30:25
Speaker 1: dared to commit suicide. His confession was not at first credited.
• 30:30
Speaker 1: He was thought to be deranged, but he persisted in
• 30:33
Speaker 1: his statements, indicted on his own confession, which he afterwards withdrew.
• 30:39
Speaker 1: But he was found guilty and in due course executed.
• 30:42
Speaker 1: When in his condemned cell, he made a clean breast
• 30:45
Speaker 1: of his crime and described exactly what had occurred. There
• 30:49
Speaker 1: had been an altercation about money matters. Sheward had grown
• 30:53
Speaker 1: wild with passion and attacked her with a razor, which
• 30:56
Speaker 1: he ran into her throat. She never spoke again, he said,
• 31:01
Speaker 1: I then threw an apron over her head and went out.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: That night, he slept in the house. Next morning he
• 31:08
Speaker 1: commenced his horrible task. For several days he worked hard
• 31:12
Speaker 1: at his gruesome task of preparing for the disposal of
• 31:15
Speaker 1: the body. His proceedings were akin to those of other
• 31:18
Speaker 1: murderers of his class, and he tried the various processes
• 31:23
Speaker 1: detailed in other cases. On the fifth day, he had
• 31:27
Speaker 1: completed the dismemberment, and had almost entirely disposed of the
• 31:31
Speaker 1: remains by throwing them down the sewers or burying them
• 31:35
Speaker 1: in the suburbs. He burnt all the clothes and bed linen.
• 31:39
Speaker 1: Last of all the long hair. It was light, auburn hair,
• 31:43
Speaker 1: and plentiful. I cut it up with a pair of
• 31:46
Speaker 1: scissors into small pieces, and they blew away as I
• 31:49
Speaker 1: walked along. The mutilation had been so complete that even
• 31:54
Speaker 1: the ring finger had been cut off. In this case
• 31:57
Speaker 1: we see another instance of many where medical evidence has
• 32:01
Speaker 1: been completely astray. Yet the incontestable fact remains that murder
• 32:06
Speaker 1: will out, and the cases are comparatively few where the
• 32:10
Speaker 1: murderer escapes detection and his just reward. End of Chapter one,
• 32:17
Speaker 1: full and authentic account of the Whitechapel murders. Never in
• 32:22
Speaker 1: the record of criminal history were the police of any
• 32:25
Speaker 1: country called upon to unravel a mystery so complete as
• 32:29
Speaker 1: that which enshrouds the famous murders in Whitechapel, London. Nine
• 32:34
Speaker 1: victims have fallen under the skillful knife of an unknown fiend,
• 32:39
Speaker 1: and there remains not a particle of a clue on
• 32:42
Speaker 1: which to hang a hope of discovery of the murderer.
• 32:45
Speaker 1: From beginning to end, the tragedies have been marked by
• 32:48
Speaker 1: many circumstances and mysterious details which fill all with horror
• 32:53
Speaker 1: and dismay. The clubmen in his club, the lady in
• 32:57
Speaker 1: her boudoir, the housewife life in her kitchen, the working
• 33:02
Speaker 1: girl in the shop and factory, the whispering, gin soaked
• 33:05
Speaker 1: public woman on the thoroughfare alike were stirred by these
• 33:09
Speaker 1: dreadful tidings of heartless and bloody crime. The Government of
• 33:14
Speaker 1: Her Majesty was questioned about them in open parliament. The
• 33:18
Speaker 1: detectives of Scotland Yard put their heads together, plotted, schemed, devised,
• 33:24
Speaker 1: but all to no purpose. The ensanguined book of dastardly
• 33:29
Speaker 1: Murder is a sealed book, one after the other. The
• 33:33
Speaker 1: mutilated victims of this mysterious demon were picked up on
• 33:37
Speaker 1: the highways of a great city. But no one has
• 33:40
Speaker 1: seen the murderer, no one suspects who he is, and
• 33:44
Speaker 1: no one has found him. A great wave of nervous, feverish,
• 33:48
Speaker 1: alarm and terror swept over the metropolis of Great Britain.
• 33:52
Speaker 1: In every case the unmistakable work of the same fiend
• 33:56
Speaker 1: was too painfully apparent to admit of a doubt that
• 34:00
Speaker 1: these murders in Whitechapel were wrought by one fell hand.
• 34:04
Speaker 1: Madman he probably was, but with all his boldness he
• 34:09
Speaker 1: possessed a cruel cunning which allowed him to stalk abroad
• 34:12
Speaker 1: on the public streets, striking down his victims as he pleased,
• 34:16
Speaker 1: leaving not the faintest clue to his personality. No conception
• 34:21
Speaker 1: can be formed of the motives of his horrible crimes,
• 34:25
Speaker 1: unless it is reasonable to suppose it was the work
• 34:28
Speaker 1: of a maniac. Did the fiend experiment on the corpses
• 34:31
Speaker 1: for anatomical purposes? Did he seek revenge on the class
• 34:36
Speaker 1: of public women because some injury he had himself received
• 34:40
Speaker 1: from one of them? Was he a madman, irresponsible, bloodthirsty,
• 34:45
Speaker 1: craving supernatural excitements. These are some of the questions that
• 34:50
Speaker 1: may resolve themselves when you have read a detailed account
• 34:53
Speaker 1: of these murders. Perpetuated in one of the oldest and
• 34:57
Speaker 1: presumably one of the most civilized cities in the modern world.
• 35:02
Speaker 1: The first of the Whitechapel murder series attracted little public attention.
• 35:06
Speaker 1: It was perpetrated on April third, eighteen eighty eight. The
• 35:11
Speaker 1: victim was Emma Elizabeth Smith. As the policeman stooped over her,
• 35:16
Speaker 1: looked into her bloodless face in the light of bullseye,
• 35:20
Speaker 1: gazed into her blear eyes, smelt her gin soaked breath,
• 35:25
Speaker 1: examined her bloodstained clothes. He reported the case to headquarters.
• 35:30
Speaker 1: The officials did not bother much about it. Only a
• 35:33
Speaker 1: woman of the lowest class, they thought, murdered in a
• 35:36
Speaker 1: drunken brawl. What else can you expect in Whitechapel, with
• 35:41
Speaker 1: its floating population of criminals and fallen women. The press
• 35:45
Speaker 1: commented a little on the incident. The clubman yawned after
• 35:49
Speaker 1: he read about it at his supper. The fine lady
• 35:52
Speaker 1: remarked it was shocking as she buttered her muffins at breakfast,
• 35:57
Speaker 1: and then the disagreeable subject was dismissed. Martha Turner was
• 36:01
Speaker 1: a poor hawker in Whitechapel. On Tuesday August seventh, eighteen
• 36:06
Speaker 1: eighty eight, this Martha Turner was found lying on her back,
• 36:10
Speaker 1: her clothing disarrayed, on the first floor landing of the
• 36:13
Speaker 1: buildings known as George Yard Buildings, Commercial Street, Spittlefield's Whitechapel.
• 36:20
Speaker 1: Her throat was cut, her breasts were amputated and laid
• 36:23
Speaker 1: beside her. Her legs were lacerated with knife gashes, and
• 36:28
Speaker 1: the blood stained the floor with clotted red. The day
• 36:31
Speaker 1: previous to the second murder had been what is known
• 36:34
Speaker 1: as Bank Holiday, and it was late in the evening
• 36:37
Speaker 1: that day that the murder had been perpetrated. Martha Turner
• 36:41
Speaker 1: had evidently met her fate by the same hand that
• 36:44
Speaker 1: struck down Emma Elizabeth Smith. The same mutilation of the
• 36:49
Speaker 1: same parts was visible. The same rapid work was traceable
• 36:53
Speaker 1: in the assassin's onslaught. As nearly as the police could determine,
• 36:57
Speaker 1: both women had been seized suddenly, unexpectedly by a powerful
• 37:02
Speaker 1: arm from behind, and their throats cut swiftly by the
• 37:05
Speaker 1: rapid stroke of a razor edged knife. Such was the
• 37:10
Speaker 1: force of the murderer's death blow, and such the keenness
• 37:13
Speaker 1: of his devilish weapon, that the head was almost severed
• 37:17
Speaker 1: from the body, hung loose, and the knife had left
• 37:20
Speaker 1: its imprint upon the bone at the back of the neck.
• 37:23
Speaker 1: But more remarkable than the ghastly work at the throat
• 37:27
Speaker 1: was the discovery that the woman had received no less
• 37:30
Speaker 1: than thirty nine distinct, deep and clear cut stabs upon
• 37:34
Speaker 1: various parts of her body. From these wounds, the blood
• 37:38
Speaker 1: had poured forth, saturating her clothes and covering the steps
• 37:42
Speaker 1: on which she lay with a slipery coating of coagulated blood.
• 37:47
Speaker 1: Examination of the body revealed the same horrible, indescribable mutilation
• 37:52
Speaker 1: of the uterus that had marked the first murder. The
• 37:56
Speaker 1: underclothing of coarse material had been thrown roughly up over
• 38:00
Speaker 1: the victim's head, and a jagged wound crossed the bowels,
• 38:04
Speaker 1: laying bare the intestines. Below this, a portion of the
• 38:08
Speaker 1: woman's body had been cut out with the nicety and
• 38:11
Speaker 1: skill of a surgeon's knife, leaving only a blood, oozing
• 38:15
Speaker 1: and quivering aperture. The organ had been removed, as in
• 38:20
Speaker 1: the case of the first murder. Horror seized the police
• 38:23
Speaker 1: authorities on seeing this sight. Several friends of the victim
• 38:27
Speaker 1: were arrested and held by the coroner, but little was
• 38:31
Speaker 1: found that cast light on the crime. At the inquest,
• 38:35
Speaker 1: Mary Ann Connolly, known in Whitechapel as Pearly Paul, was
• 38:39
Speaker 1: a witness who was expected to give valuable information. Inspector
• 38:44
Speaker 1: Reid asked that she might be cautioned prior to being sworn,
• 38:48
Speaker 1: and the coroner complied with this request. I am a
• 38:52
Speaker 1: single woman, testified Pearly Paul. I've been lodging in a
• 38:56
Speaker 1: lodging house in Dorset Street. I have gained my lifelihood
• 39:00
Speaker 1: on the streets. I've known the murdered woman for four
• 39:03
Speaker 1: or five months. We called her Emma. The last time
• 39:07
Speaker 1: I saw her alive was on Bank Holiday at the
• 39:10
Speaker 1: corner of Georgyard Whychapel. We went to a public house
• 39:14
Speaker 1: together and parted at eleven forty five. We were accompanied
• 39:18
Speaker 1: by two soldiers, one a private and one a corporal.
• 39:22
Speaker 1: I don't know to what regiment they belonged, but they
• 39:25
Speaker 1: had little white bands around their caps. I don't remember
• 39:29
Speaker 1: whether the corporal had side arms or not. We picked
• 39:32
Speaker 1: up with the soldiers together and entered several public houses.
• 39:37
Speaker 1: We drank at each of the houses. When we separated,
• 39:40
Speaker 1: Emma went away with the private. They went up to Georgyard,
• 39:45
Speaker 1: and I and my fellow went to angel Alley. Before
• 39:48
Speaker 1: I went away from my fellow, I had a quarrel
• 39:51
Speaker 1: and he hit me with a stick. I didn't hear
• 39:53
Speaker 1: Emma have a quarrel. I never saw her alive again.
• 39:57
Speaker 1: Emma wasn't given to drink. I tried to pick out
• 40:01
Speaker 1: the two men who were with us. I tried at
• 40:04
Speaker 1: Willington Barracks. The men were paraded before me. But though
• 40:08
Speaker 1: I saw two men something like those who were with
• 40:11
Speaker 1: us on the night of the murder. I couldn't be sure.
• 40:14
Speaker 1: I left my fellow, the corporal, at five or ten
• 40:18
Speaker 1: minutes past twelve that morning, and afterwards went along Commercial
• 40:22
  Speaker 1: Street towards Whitechapel. I didn't hear no screams. I didn't
• 40:27
Speaker 1: hear of the murder till Tuesday. Pearly Paul was the
• 40:30
Speaker 1: only witness who could give any news at all about
• 40:33
Speaker 1: Martha Turner. And that news, as you see, was scant enough.
• 40:38
Speaker 1: The authorities were baffled. The public was beginning to be aroused.
• 40:43
Speaker 1: Scarcely had aristocratic West End of London recovered from the
• 40:47
Speaker 1: second murder in low life East End. When the city
• 40:51
Speaker 1: and the world were cast into new spasms by the
• 40:54
Speaker 1: flash of news that a third crime had been committed
• 40:57
Speaker 1: in the cursed Crime Staying precinct of Whitechapel, everybody asked
• 41:03
Speaker 1: who is it? And the answer came swifter than death.
• 41:07
Speaker 1: Another woman. This time it was Mary Anne Nichols, aged
• 41:12
Speaker 1: forty two, a woman of the lowest class. She had
• 41:15
Speaker 1: been killed and mutilated. Her body was found in the
• 41:19
Speaker 1: street in bucks Row, Whitechapel in the early morning of Friday,
• 41:23
Speaker 1: August thirty first. Mary Anne Nicholls had evidently not been
• 41:27
Speaker 1: killed on the spot where her body lay dead. She
• 41:30
Speaker 1: had evidently been killed at another spot and dragged to
• 41:34
Speaker 1: where she lay. There was little blood around the corpse.
• 41:39
Speaker 1: Bucks Row is a short street, half occupied by factories,
• 41:43
Speaker 1: half by dwelling houses. Half down this street is the
• 41:46
Speaker 1: house of Missus Green. Next to this house is a
• 41:50
Speaker 1: large stable yard, whose wide, closed gateway is next to
• 41:53
Speaker 1: the house. In front of the gateway, Mary Anne Nichols
• 41:57
Speaker 1: was found. The brutality of the murder is beyond conception
• 42:02
Speaker 1: and beyond description. The throat was cut in two gashes,
• 42:07
Speaker 1: the instrument of crime having been a sharp one, but
• 42:10
Speaker 1: used in a most ferocious and reckless way. There was
• 42:14
Speaker 1: a gash under the left ear, reaching nearly to the
• 42:17
Speaker 1: center of the throat along half its length. However, it
• 42:21
Speaker 1: was accompanied by another one which reached around under the
• 42:24
Speaker 1: other ear, making a wide and horrible hole and nearly
• 42:28
Speaker 1: severing the head from the body. No murder was ever
• 42:32
Speaker 1: more ferociously or more brutally done. The knife, which must
• 42:36
Speaker 1: have been a large and sharp one, was jabbed into
• 42:39
Speaker 1: the deceased at the lower part of the abdomen, and
• 42:43
Speaker 1: then drawn upward twice. A sickening sight truly such as unmanned.
• 42:49
Speaker 1: The most hardened official, Constable O'Neill, who discovered the lifeless
• 42:54
Speaker 1: body immediately wrapped at the house of Missus Green. Have
• 42:58
Speaker 1: you heard any unusual noise? He asked, wiping the perspiration
• 43:02
Speaker 1: from his brow. Then he pointed out the body. Missus
• 43:07
Speaker 1: Green almost fainted when she saw the ghastly spectacle. Constable
• 43:11
Speaker 1: O'Neill put his hand on the woman's shoulder and repeated
• 43:14
Speaker 1: the question. Missus Green, as though demented, shook her head
• 43:19
Speaker 1: in the negative. Then Constable O'Neill questioned the son and
• 43:23
Speaker 1: daughter of Missus Green. We have heard no outcry, said they.
• 43:28
Speaker 1: The night was unusually quiet, said Missus Green. Finally, I
• 43:32
Speaker 1: should have heard a noise if there had been any,
• 43:35
Speaker 1: for I have trouble with my heart and am a
• 43:38
Speaker 1: very light sleeper. Then Constable O'Neill questioned mister Perkins, an
• 43:43
Speaker 1: opposite neighbor to the Greens, but he also denied having
• 43:47
Speaker 1: heard a noise in the still air of night. Several people, however,
• 43:51
Speaker 1: remembered strange sounds. I was awakened Friday morning, testified Missus Perkins,
• 43:57
Speaker 1: a neighbor by my little girl, who you said someone
• 44:00
Speaker 1: was trying to get into the house. I listened and
• 44:03
Speaker 1: heard screams. They were in a woman's voice, and though frightened,
• 44:07
Speaker 1: were faintlike, as would be natural if she was running.
• 44:12
Speaker 1: She was screaming murder, Police, murder. She seemed to be
• 44:17
Speaker 1: all alone. I think I would have heard the steps
• 44:19
Speaker 1: if anybody had been running after her, unless he were
• 44:23
Speaker 1: running on tiptoe. The detectives of Scotland Yard, thoroughly aroused
• 44:28
Speaker 1: by this third murder, at once searched everywhere in the
• 44:31
Speaker 1: vicinity in the hope of discovering some clue. None was found.
• 44:37
Speaker 1: Everything pointed to the fact that the murder was committed
• 44:41
Speaker 1: at some distance from where the body lay. There were
• 44:44
Speaker 1: drops of blood all along the sidewalks, but there was
• 44:47
Speaker 1: a mystery even here. The police were puzzled by the
• 44:50
Speaker 1: fact that there were blood stains on both sides of
• 44:53
Speaker 1: the street. Amid a gaping, tear stricken crowd, the blood
• 44:58
Speaker 1: clotted body of Maryanne Neckkeles was lifted on a stretcher
• 45:01
Speaker 1: and conveyed to the death house. A cordon of police
• 45:05
Speaker 1: had to keep the crowd back. It took some time
• 45:09
Speaker 1: to identify her positively. The clothing wore a workhouse stamp,
• 45:14
Speaker 1: a comb and a piece of looking glass were found
• 45:17
Speaker 1: in one of the pockets. Finally, four women identified her.
• 45:21
Speaker 1: Said they knew her by the name of Polly. We
• 45:24
Speaker 1: have lived with her at eighteenth Thrall Street, Spittlefields, said they.
• 45:29
Speaker 1: We lived there in a room. We paid fourpence a night.
• 45:33
Speaker 1: On the night of the murder, it appears Mary Ann
• 45:35
Speaker 1: Nichols alias Polly, was turned out of this house because
• 45:39
Speaker 1: she hadn't money to pay for her lodgings. She was
• 45:43
Speaker 1: then a little the worse for drink and said as
• 45:46
Speaker 1: she was turned away, I'll soon get my doss money.
• 45:49
Speaker 1: See what a jolly bonnet I've got now. The lodging
• 45:53
Speaker 1: house people only knew her as Polly, but later a
• 45:56
Speaker 1: woman from Lambeth workhouse identified her as Mary Anne Nichols.
• 46:01
Speaker 1: The deceased woman had been an inmate of the workhouse
• 46:04
Speaker 1: and left it to take a situation as a servant,
• 46:07
Speaker 1: but after a short time she absconded with three pounds
• 46:11
Speaker 1: of her employer's money. From that time forth she was
• 46:15
Speaker 1: an outcast. The police theory was at the time that
• 46:19
Speaker 1: a sort of high rip gang existed in the neighborhood,
• 46:23
Speaker 1: which blackmailing women of the unfortunate class takes vengeance on
• 46:27
Speaker 1: those who do not find money for them. They base
• 46:31
Speaker 1: that surmise on the fact that within twelve months two
• 46:34
Speaker 1: other women have been murdered in the district by almost
• 46:38
Speaker 1: similar means, one as recently as the sixth of August
• 46:42
Speaker 1: last and left in the gutter of the street in
• 46:44
Speaker 1: the early hours of the morning. At the coroner's inquest,
• 46:48
Speaker 1: no testimony was adduced that tended to cast any light
• 46:52
Speaker 1: on the horrible mystery. The deceased woman's husband, who was
• 46:56
Speaker 1: a printer's machinist, testified that he had lived upon a
• 47:00
Speaker 1: hard from his wife for over eight years, and the
• 47:03
Speaker 1: last time he saw her alive was three years ago.
• 47:06
Speaker 1: His wife had left him of her own accord, and
• 47:09
Speaker 1: her drinking habits had led her into a dissolute life.
• 47:13
Speaker 1: A week after the killing of Mary Anne Nichols, another
• 47:16
Speaker 1: fallen woman, Annie Chapman, aged forty five, was found killed
• 47:21
Speaker 1: and hacked like the rest, this making the fourth murder.
• 47:25
Speaker 1: Her body was discovered in Buck's Row, Whitechapel. John Davies,
• 47:30
Speaker 1: living on top floor of twenty nine Hanbury Street, stumbled
• 47:34
Speaker 1: across it on the morning of Friday, August thirty first,
• 47:37
Speaker 1: and yelled for the police at a spot a very
• 47:41
Speaker 1: few hundred yards from where the mangled body of the
• 47:44
Speaker 1: poor woman Nichols was found just a week before. Lay
• 47:47
Speaker 1: this body of another woman, mutilated and horribly disfigured. She
• 47:53
Speaker 1: was found at five thirty on Sunday morning, lying in
• 47:56
Speaker 1: the back yard of number twenty Hanbury Street, Spittlefield, a
• 48:00
Speaker 1: house occupied by mister Richardson, a packing case maker, As
• 48:05
Speaker 1: late as five o'clock on Saturday morning. It is said
• 48:08
Speaker 1: the woman was drinking in a public house near at hand,
• 48:12
Speaker 1: called the Ten Bells. Near the body was discovered a
• 48:15
Speaker 1: rough piece of iron sharpened like a knife. The wounds
• 48:19
Speaker 1: upon the poor woman were more fearful than those found
• 48:22
Speaker 1: upon the body of the woman Nichols, who was buried
• 48:25
Speaker 1: on Thursday. The throat was cut in a most horrible manner,
• 48:29
Speaker 1: and the stomach terribly mutilated. The bowels were ripped open,
• 48:34
Speaker 1: the intestines hung out. The place was a pool of blood.
• 48:39
Speaker 1: While Davies cried for the police. Missus Richardson, an old
• 48:43
Speaker 1: lady sleeping on the first floor front, was aroused by
• 48:47
Speaker 1: her grandson, Charles Cooksley, who looked out of one of
• 48:51
Speaker 1: the back windows and screamed that there was a dead
• 48:54
Speaker 1: body on the corner. Missus Richardson's description makes this murder
• 48:58
Speaker 1: even more horrible than any of its predecessors. The victim
• 49:03
Speaker 1: was lying on her back, with her legs outstretched. Her
• 49:07
Speaker 1: throat was cut from ear to ear. Her clothes were
• 49:11
Speaker 1: pushed up above her waist and her legs bare. The
• 49:14
Speaker 1: abdomen was exposed, the woman having been ripped up from
• 49:18
Speaker 1: growing to breastbone. As in the preceding cases. Not only this,
• 49:24
Speaker 1: but the viscera had been pulled out and scattered in
• 49:27
Speaker 1: all directions, the heart and liver being placed behind her head,
• 49:32
Speaker 1: and the remainder along her side. No more horrible sight
• 49:36
Speaker 1: ever met a human eye, for she was covered with
• 49:40
Speaker 1: blood and lying in a pool of it. The throat
• 49:43
Speaker 1: had been cut open in a fearful manner, so deep,
• 49:46
Speaker 1: in fact, that the murderer, evidently thinking that he had
• 49:50
Speaker 1: severed the head from the body, tied a handkerchief around
• 49:54
Speaker 1: it so as to keep it on. There was no
• 49:56
Speaker 1: blood on the clothes. Hanbury Street is a long street
• 50:00
Speaker 1: which runs from Baker's Road to Commercial Street. It consists
• 50:04
Speaker 1: partly of shops and partly of private houses. In the
• 50:08
Speaker 1: house in question. In the front room on the ground floor,
• 50:12
Speaker 1: mister Harderman carries on the business of a seller of
• 50:15
Speaker 1: cat's meat. At the back of the premises are those
• 50:19
Speaker 1: of mister Richardson, who is a packing case maker. The
• 50:23
Speaker 1: other occupants of the house are lodgers. One of the lodgers,
• 50:26
Speaker 1: named Robert Thompson, who is a carman, went out of
• 50:30
Speaker 1: the house at three thirty in the morning, but heard
• 50:32
Speaker 1: no noise. Two girls, who also live in the house
• 50:36
Speaker 1: were talking in the passage until twelve thirty with young men,
• 50:40
Speaker 1: and it is believed that they were the last occupants
• 50:42
Speaker 1: of the house to retire to rest. It seems that
• 50:46
Speaker 1: the crime was committed soon after five. At that hour,
• 50:50
Speaker 1: the woman and the man, who in all probability was
• 50:53
Speaker 1: her murderer, were seen drinking together in the bells Brick lane.
• 50:58
Speaker 1: But though the murder was committed at the late hour,
• 51:01
Speaker 1: the murderer, acting as in the other case, silently and steathily,
• 51:06
Speaker 1: managed to make his escape. On the wall near where
• 51:10
Speaker 1: the body was found, there was, according to one reporter,
• 51:14
Speaker 1: discovered written in chalk five fifteen more and then I
• 51:18
Speaker 1: give myself up Jack the ripper Davies, the lodger who
• 51:24
Speaker 1: discovered the body, immediately communicated with the police at the
• 51:28
Speaker 1: Commercial Street station, and Inspector Chandler and several constables arrived
• 51:33
Speaker 1: on the scene in a short time. When they found
• 51:36
Speaker 1: the woman in the condition described, an excited crowd gathered
• 51:40
Speaker 1: in front of Missus Richardson's house and also around the
• 51:44
Speaker 1: martuary in Old Montague Street, to which place the body
• 51:48
Speaker 1: was quickly removed. Several persons who were lodging in the
• 51:52
Speaker 1: house and who were seen in the vicinity when the
• 51:54
Speaker 1: body was found, were taken to the Commercial Street station
• 51:58
Speaker 1: and closely examined, especially the women last with the deceased.
• 52:03
Speaker 1: Inquiries led to the discovery that the woman was known
• 52:06
Speaker 1: by several names. Her real name was Annie Chapman, but
• 52:11
Speaker 1: she had latterly passed as Annie Seevie and rejoiced in
• 52:15
Speaker 1: the nickname of Dark Annie. Her age was about forty five.
• 52:19
Speaker 1: She was five feet high, had fair brown, wavy hair,
• 52:23
Speaker 1: blue eyes, and, like Mary Anne Nichols, had two teeth missing.
• 52:28
Speaker 1: One peculiarity of her features was a large, flat kind
• 52:32
Speaker 1: of nose. Her clothing was old and dirty, and nothing
• 52:36
Speaker 1: was found in her pockets except part of an envelope
• 52:39
Speaker 1: bearing the seal of the Sussex Regiment. For the last
• 52:43
Speaker 1: nine months she had been sleeping at a lodging house
• 52:46
Speaker 1: thirty five Dorset Street, Spittlefields, and she was there as
• 52:50
Speaker 1: recently as two o'clock on Saturday morning, eating some potatoes.
• 52:54
Speaker 1: She had, not, however, the money to pay for her bed,
• 52:57
Speaker 1: and at two o'clock she left with the room remarked
• 53:00
Speaker 1: to the keeper of the place, I'll soon be back again.
• 53:03
Speaker 1: I'll soon get money for my doss, Almost the very
• 53:07
Speaker 1: words Mary Anne Nichols used to the companion she met
• 53:10
Speaker 1: in Whitechapel Road at two thirty on the morning of
• 53:14
Speaker 1: her death. A companion identified her soon after she had
• 53:18
Speaker 1: been taken to the martuary as Dark Annie, and as
• 53:21
Speaker 1: she came from the marchuary gate, bitterly crying, said between
• 53:25
Speaker 1: her tears, I knowed her. I kissed her poor cold face.
• 53:30
Speaker 1: The large, flat kind of nose of the deceased was
• 53:33
Speaker 1: so striking a peculiarity that the police hoped to be
• 53:37
Speaker 1: able to fully trace the movements of the deceased by
• 53:40
Speaker 1: means of it. The clothing of the dead woman, like
• 53:43
Speaker 1: that of most of her class, who ply their trade
• 53:46
Speaker 1: in this quarter of London was old and dirty. In
• 53:50
Speaker 1: the dress of the dead woman, two farthings were found
• 53:53
Speaker 1: so brightly polished as to lead to the belief that
• 53:56
Speaker 1: they were intended to be passed as half sovereigns, and
• 54:00
Speaker 1: it is probable that they were given to her by
• 54:02
Speaker 1: the murderer as an inducement for her to accompany him.
• 54:06
Speaker 1: Late on Saturday, after the deceased had been formally identified
• 54:10
Speaker 1: as Annie Sevie, a witness came forward and stated that
• 54:14
Speaker 1: her real name was Annie Chapman. She came from Windsor
• 54:18
Speaker 1: and had friends residing at vaux Hall. She had been married,
• 54:23
Speaker 1: her husband being an army pensioner who had allowed her
• 54:27
Speaker 1: ten shillings a week, but he died a twelve month ago,
• 54:31
Speaker 1: and the pension ceasing. She became one of the hideous
• 54:34
Speaker 1: women infesting Whitechapel. She lived for a time with the
• 54:39
Speaker 1: sieve maker in Dorset Street, and was known to her
• 54:42
Speaker 1: acquaintances as Annie Sevie, a nickname derived from her paramour's trade.
• 54:48
Speaker 1: Missus Fittemont, wife of the proprietor of the Prince Albert
• 54:51
Speaker 1: Public House, better known as the clean House at the
• 54:54
Speaker 1: corner of Brushfield and Stuart Streets, half a mile from
• 54:58
Speaker 1: the scene of the murder. Told Polly that at seven
• 55:00
Speaker 1: o'clock on Saturday morning, she was standing in the bar
• 55:04
Speaker 1: talking with another woman. A friend in the first compartment
• 55:08
Speaker 1: suddenly came into the middle compartment, a man whose rough
• 55:11
Speaker 1: appearance frightened her. He had a brown stiff hat, a
• 55:15
Speaker 1: dark coat, and no waistcoat. He came in with his
• 55:18
Speaker 1: hat down over his eyes and with his face partly concealed,
• 55:23
Speaker 1: asked for a half pint of ale. She drew the
• 55:26
Speaker 1: ale and meanwhile looked at him through the mirror at
• 55:29
Speaker 1: the back of the bar. As soon as he saw
• 55:32
Speaker 1: the woman in the other compartment watching him, he turned
• 55:35
Speaker 1: his back and got the partition between himself and her.
• 55:39
Speaker 1: The thing that struck missus Fittymont particularly was the fact
• 55:43
Speaker 1: that there were blood spots on the back of his
• 55:45
Speaker 1: right hand. This, taken in connection with his appearance, caused
• 55:50
Speaker 1: her uneasiness. She also noticed that his shirt was torn.
• 55:54
Speaker 1: As soon as he had drank the ale, which he
• 55:57
Speaker 1: swallowed at a gulp, he went out. Her friend went
• 56:00
Speaker 1: out also to watch the man. Her friend was Mary Chappell,
• 56:05
Speaker 1: who lives at number twenty eight Stuart Street nearby. Her
• 56:09
Speaker 1: story coroborates Missus Fittemont's. When the man came in, the
• 56:14
Speaker 1: expression of his eyes caught her attention. His look was
• 56:17
Speaker 1: so startling and terrifying it frightened Missus Fittemont so that
• 56:22
Speaker 1: she requested her to stay. He wore a light blue
• 56:25
Speaker 1: checked shirt which was torn badly into rags. In fact,
• 56:29
Speaker 1: on the right shoulder there was a narrow streak of
• 56:33
Speaker 1: blood under his right ear, parallel with the edge of
• 56:36
Speaker 1: his shirt. There was also dried blood between the fingers
• 56:39
Speaker 1: of his hand. When he went out, she slipped out
• 56:43
Speaker 1: the other door and watched him as he went toward
• 56:45
Speaker 1: Bishopsgate Street. She called Joseph Taylor's attention to him, and
• 56:50
Speaker 1: he followed him. Taylor is a builder at number twenty
• 56:54
Speaker 1: two Stuart Street, and said that as soon as his
• 56:57
Speaker 1: attention was attracted to the man, he followed him. He
• 57:00
Speaker 1: walked rapidly and came alongside him, but did not speak
• 57:04
Speaker 1: to him. The man was rather thin, about five feet
• 57:08
Speaker 1: eight inches high and apparently between forty and fifty years
• 57:12
Speaker 1: of age. He had a shabby, genteel look, pepper and
• 57:16
Speaker 1: salt trousers which fitted badly and dark coat. When Taylor
• 57:21
Speaker 1: came alongside him, the man glanced at him, and Taylor's
• 57:25
Speaker 1: description of the look was his eyes were as wild
• 57:28
Speaker 1: as a hawk's. Was this man with the sharp eye?
• 57:32
Speaker 1: Also the man with the sharp knife? Was he the
• 57:35
Speaker 1: Whitechapel murderer? Time perhaps will tell Jack the Ripper had
• 57:41
Speaker 1: got to be a thing of flesh and blood in
• 57:43
Speaker 1: the households of England. The man of Whitechapel inspired the
• 57:48
Speaker 1: fear once inspired by Guy Fawkes. Mothers hushed their unruly
• 57:53
Speaker 1: children by saying, be quiet, or Jack the Ripper will come.
• 57:58
Speaker 1: The police were still at work. The officials of Scotland
• 58:01
Speaker 1: Yard were more than usually busy. A cordon of constables
• 58:05
Speaker 1: surrounded Whitechapel. Bloodhounds were called into use and sniffed the
• 58:10
Speaker 1: dirty pavements. The women of the quarter did without food
• 58:14
Speaker 1: and drink, dared not venture into the streets. Every man
• 58:18
Speaker 1: they saw seemed to them the demon. Every man loomed
• 58:22
Speaker 1: up as Jack the Ripper, the fiend who would be
• 58:25
Speaker 1: satisfied with no less than fifteen victims. It was on Sunday,
• 58:30
Speaker 1: September twenty third, a calm, quiet, autuminal day of rest
• 58:35
Speaker 1: the churches and cathedrals of England were full of devout worshipers.
• 58:40
Speaker 1: Suddenly there flashed across the wires that a murder had
• 58:43
Speaker 1: been committed at Gateshead, near Newcastle on Tyne in the
• 58:47
Speaker 1: north of England. Again a feeling of apprehension seized all classes.
• 58:53
Speaker 1: A young woman disemboweled, mangled, mutilated, unrecognizable, lay cold in
• 59:00
Speaker 1: death on the roadside. Who did the dastly deed? Everything
• 59:05
Speaker 1: pointed to the conclusion that this murder at Gateshead was
• 59:09
Speaker 1: the fell stroke of Jack the Ripper of Whitechapel, his
• 59:13
Speaker 1: fifth murder. The epidemic of fear in London now became
• 59:17
Speaker 1: more horrible than before. The most callous elegance of the
• 59:21
Speaker 1: West End now became thoroughly alarmed. But Jack the Ripper
• 59:26
Speaker 1: merely grinned with fiendish glee and kept from the sleuth
• 59:29
Speaker 1: hounds of the public. He hadn't killed his fifteen yet.
• 59:34
Speaker 1: On the night of September thirtieth, the streets of London
• 59:37
Speaker 1: were echoing with shrieks of murder. Two more unfortunate women
• 59:41
Speaker 1: had been added to the list of the butchered in Whitechapel,
• 59:45
Speaker 1: being the sixth and seventh victims. Elizabeth Stride, nicknamed Hippi Lipanni,
• 59:52
Speaker 1: forty years of age, was found murdered in Berner Street
• 59:55
Speaker 1: at one o'clock in the morning. Her throat was cut,
• 59:58
Speaker 1: but there was no slash of the remains. The body
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: was warm when found, and the murderer had evidently been
• 1:00:05
Speaker 1: frightened away. Now, fifteen minutes after the discovery of the
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: dead body of Hippy lip Annie, the mutilated body of
• 1:00:13
Speaker 1: another victim, a degraded woman of the Whitechapel district named
• 1:00:18
Speaker 1: Catherine Edoes, was found in the northeast corner of Miter Square.
• 1:00:23
Speaker 1: The older portion of London abounds with these cul de sacs,
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: inaccessible to wagons and to be reached only by footpaths
• 1:00:30
Speaker 1: through private property. A stranger in London would never think
• 1:00:34
Speaker 1: of entering one of them, but the old Londoner knows
• 1:00:38
Speaker 1: them well as convenient short cuts. There were two street
• 1:00:42
Speaker 1: lamps in Miter Square and they were burning brightly at
• 1:00:45
Speaker 1: one o'clock this morning. A large tea house in the
• 1:00:48
Speaker 1: square hires a private watchman, and he was on duty
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: last night with lights blazing from five windows. He is
• 1:00:56
Speaker 1: a veteran policeman and looks like a wide awake, trustworthy man.
• 1:01:01
Speaker 1: Less than two hundred feet from the tea house are
• 1:01:03
Speaker 1: three or four dwelling houses with bedroom windows facing the square,
• 1:01:08
Speaker 1: and at least twenty people sleeping in them. The policeman
• 1:01:11
Speaker 1: on the beat goes through the square every fifteen minutes
• 1:01:15
Speaker 1: throughout the night, searching corners with a dark lantern and
• 1:01:19
Speaker 1: rousing out homeless people who fall asleep on the area railings.
• 1:01:23
Speaker 1: The policeman who was on the beat at one o'clock
• 1:01:26
Speaker 1: this morning was a stalwart, honest looking fellow. At one
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: thirty this morning, he passed through the square, searching all
• 1:01:33
Speaker 1: corners with his lantern, and stopping for at least a
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: half a minute in one particular corner right under the
• 1:01:40
Speaker 1: bedroom window of a dwelling house. Everything was silent and
• 1:01:44
Speaker 1: dark except the windows of the tea house, where the
• 1:01:47
Speaker 1: watchman was awake reading. Fifteen minutes afterward, the policeman passed
• 1:01:52
Speaker 1: the same corner again. This time he found a woman
• 1:01:56
Speaker 1: stretched dead upon the pavement in a pool of blood,
• 1:01:59
Speaker 1: her throat cut, her nose torn from the face, the
• 1:02:03
Speaker 1: clothes thrown back over the body, the abdomen gashed into pieces,
• 1:02:08
Speaker 1: and the intestines wretched from the stomach. The policeman started.
• 1:02:13
Speaker 1: He ran over to the tea house and hammered on
• 1:02:15
Speaker 1: the door. What's the matter, shouted the watchman. For God's sake,
• 1:02:20
Speaker 1: said the policeman. Come out and assist me. Another woman
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: has been ripped open. Not as sound had the watchman heard.
• 1:02:28
Speaker 1: The slumbers of the people in the dwelling houses had
• 1:02:30
Speaker 1: not been disturbed. Within fifteen minutes, a merciless murder had
• 1:02:35
Speaker 1: been committed, and the murder had disappeared in the darkness
• 1:02:39
Speaker 1: without the slightest clue for the police to follow. It
• 1:02:43
Speaker 1: was a horrible sight. Every sweep of the assassin's night
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: had been made to tell it was a woman about
• 1:02:50
Speaker 1: forty five years old, poorly nourished, shabbily dressed, undoubtedly and unfortunate,
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: who picked up a living on the streets. In this case,
• 1:03:00
Speaker 1: no organs were missing, as in the bodies of the
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: women previously murdered. The cuts on the stomach were almost
• 1:03:06
Speaker 1: in the shape of the letter T, the upward cut
• 1:03:10
Speaker 1: stretching from the uterus to the breast, and a cross
• 1:03:13
Speaker 1: cut slanting from the lower part of the left ribs
• 1:03:16
Speaker 1: to the right hip. The deed must have been done
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: with a heavy knife, and by someone skilled in the
• 1:03:23
Speaker 1: use of it. No jagged hacking, but clean cuts scientifically made.
• 1:03:29
Speaker 1: Several doctors arrived and examined the body. They found a
• 1:03:33
Speaker 1: prodigious quantity of blood which had flowed chiefly from the throat,
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: but the murderer had so carefully avoided it that not
• 1:03:41
Speaker 1: a single footmark could be traced. The body was removed
• 1:03:45
Speaker 1: to the martuary, where a careful Porsch mortem examination took place.
• 1:03:50
Speaker 1: There was a tattoo mark of a figure four on
• 1:03:53
Speaker 1: the woman's left forearm. Throngs of noisy men, desolute women,
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: and squalid children sur rounded the localities where the murders
• 1:04:02
Speaker 1: were committed and the places where the bodies await the coroner.
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: They struggled and fought with each other to gain admittance
• 1:04:09
Speaker 1: to the Dead House, and the police had to use
• 1:04:12
Speaker 1: brute force to drive them back. It was a panic
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: of fear and frenzy that those who witnessed will never forget.
• 1:04:20
Speaker 1: Early in the day, people were allowed in the Dead
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: House to see the woman found on Berner Street and
• 1:04:25
Speaker 1: to try and identify her. As soon as she was identified,
• 1:04:29
Speaker 1: the doors were closed to all except persons having business there.
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: Those living in the neighborhood who did get a chance
• 1:04:36
Speaker 1: to approach the corpse, paraded the streets all day with
• 1:04:39
Speaker 1: blood stains of the victim on their fingers, and describe
• 1:04:43
Speaker 1: the appearance of the body over and over again to
• 1:04:46
Speaker 1: all the people who would listen to them. London was
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: now thoroughly alarmed. Sir Charles Warren issued a proclamation. The
• 1:04:54
Speaker 1: Lord Mayor offered a big reward for the capture of
• 1:04:57
Speaker 1: the murderer. Even the swell in the West End stopped
• 1:05:01
Speaker 1: sucking the end of his cane and showed considerable animation
• 1:05:05
Speaker 1: over the horror that took place. With such startling successive rapidity,
• 1:05:10
Speaker 1: everybody felt that the condition of the lost women in
• 1:05:14
Speaker 1: London ought to be investigated. Everybody felt there was much
• 1:05:18
Speaker 1: rottenness in the existing state of things. Is it a
• 1:05:21
Speaker 1: wonder there so many degraded women in London? If the
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: West End is full of iniquity and injustice, can you
• 1:05:29
Speaker 1: marvel at dissipation and debauch in the East End. London
• 1:05:33
Speaker 1: was soon stirred by another sensation. On October second, eighteen
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: eighty eight, the highly decomposed remains of a woman were
• 1:05:42
Speaker 1: found on the site of the projected Metropolitan opera house
• 1:05:45
Speaker 1: on the Thames Embankment. The spot is near charing Cross,
• 1:05:50
Speaker 1: three miles west of Whitechapel. But the state of the body,
• 1:05:54
Speaker 1: the gashes, the mutilations, the cuts, the holes in the flesh,
• 1:05:58
Speaker 1: proved plainly that the murderer was the old fiend, that
• 1:06:02
Speaker 1: this was his eighth victim. He had evidently attacked his
• 1:06:07
Speaker 1: victim from behind, cut her throat from ear to ear,
• 1:06:10
Speaker 1: dug his knife into her breasts. Then he raised her
• 1:06:14
Speaker 1: poor dishelf clothing, slit the body right and left, and
• 1:06:19
Speaker 1: left the intestines exposed in a clotted pool of blood.
• 1:06:23
Speaker 1: There had evidently been a hard fight. Spots of gore
• 1:06:26
Speaker 1: were splattered all over the pavement, but the victim, in
• 1:06:30
Speaker 1: spite of her struggles, had succumbed to the hellish adroitness
• 1:06:34
Speaker 1: and diabolical strength of her foul assailant. There she lay
• 1:06:39
Speaker 1: in the moonlight, stiff, stark, dead, and the murderer escaped.
• 1:06:45
Speaker 1: Newsboys hawked about the dreadful news London at its breakfast
• 1:06:49
Speaker 1: read of a new tragedy. The calls for the resignation
• 1:06:53
Speaker 1: of Sir Charles Warren, chief of Metropolitan Police, already loud
• 1:06:58
Speaker 1: grow louder old man told the story of crimes in
• 1:07:01
Speaker 1: the olden times terrible as this eighth murder was. Whitechapel
• 1:07:06
Speaker 1: had been the scene of mysterious murders before close upon
• 1:07:10
Speaker 1: eighty years since it, and indeed the whole country was
• 1:07:14
Speaker 1: startled by the perpetration of a series of most revolting murders,
• 1:07:18
Speaker 1: the seen being Ratcliff Highway. The malefactor, whoever he was,
• 1:07:24
Speaker 1: for it was never definitely decided, although there was a
• 1:07:27
Speaker 1: case of strong circumstantial evidence almost amounting to certainty against
• 1:07:32
Speaker 1: an Irish sailor named Williams or Murphy did not in
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: these instances seek out and mark down unfortunate women of
• 1:07:41
Speaker 1: the lowest class, but looked for his victims in the
• 1:07:44
Speaker 1: persons of respectable tradespeople and their families. Slaughtered without mercy,
• 1:07:48
Speaker 1: every human being within the four walls, sparing not even
• 1:07:52
Speaker 1: the defenseless, innocent babe in the cradle. The two distinct
• 1:07:57
Speaker 1: crimes in which seven lives were taken occurred within the
• 1:08:01
Speaker 1: space of a fortnight. The first the murder of the
• 1:08:05
Speaker 1: whole household of the Mars at number twenty nine Ratcliffe Highway,
• 1:08:10
Speaker 1: soon after midnight of Saturday, December eighth, eighteen eleven, and
• 1:08:15
Speaker 1: the second a similar massacre of the Williamsons at number
• 1:08:19
Speaker 1: eighty one New Gravel Lane, Ratcliffe Highway, between eleven and
• 1:08:24
Speaker 1: twelve o'clock on the night of the nineteenth of the
• 1:08:27
Speaker 1: same month. In the first case, four persons in all
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: were the victims of the outrage. They were mister and
• 1:08:34
Speaker 1: Missus Marr, each of whom were under twenty five years
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: of age, their infant four months old, and James Gahan,
• 1:08:42
Speaker 1: the apprentice, fourteen years of age. The servant girl would
• 1:08:46
Speaker 1: doubtless have shared the same fate, but that she had
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: been sent out on an errand, and on her return,
• 1:08:52
Speaker 1: having been absent less than twenty minutes, found the house
• 1:08:55
Speaker 1: in darkness, and subsequently the bodies were discovered lying in
• 1:09:00
Speaker 1: various parts of the ground floor and upon the staircase.
• 1:09:03
Speaker 1: Three persons perished. In the second case, they were mister
• 1:09:07
Speaker 1: and missus Williamson, the landlord and Landlady of the King's Arms,
• 1:09:12
Speaker 1: and their maid servant, who was found in like manner
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: at the bottom front of the house. A deliriument panic
• 1:09:19
Speaker 1: seized Londoners in general, and those living in the East End,
• 1:09:23
Speaker 1: especially as had seldom or never been known before. People
• 1:09:28
Speaker 1: barricaded their doors and windows, as if in momentary expectation
• 1:09:32
Speaker 1: of a siege, and there were some who even died
• 1:09:35
Speaker 1: of fright as they heard their shutters or doors tried
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: by persons who, at the worst were probably meditating nothing
• 1:09:43
Speaker 1: more serious than burglary. Nor was the alarm confined to
• 1:09:47
Speaker 1: the metropolis. A notion had somehow got abroad that the murderer,
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: whoever he was, had left London, and a state of
• 1:09:56
Speaker 1: the wildest terror prevailed all over the country. It is
• 1:09:59
Speaker 1: an ill wind that blows nobody good. And those were
• 1:10:03
Speaker 1: fine times for locksmith's, ironmongers, carpenters and the like. Everybody
• 1:10:08
Speaker 1: was having new shutters, doors, bolts, bars and locks. Indeed,
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: the door chain, which upon old doors is so often
• 1:10:16
Speaker 1: of tremendous strength and weight, owes its origin to the
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: prevailing alarm, which existed for many months afterward. He would
• 1:10:25
Speaker 1: be in truth of bold, and his neighbors would say
• 1:10:28
Speaker 1: a rash man who answered a knock at the door
• 1:10:31
Speaker 1: or a ring at the bell before peering cautiously through
• 1:10:34
Speaker 1: the slit, which the chain permitted. Even the caricaturists of
• 1:10:38
Speaker 1: the day ready enough as a rule to ceize hold
• 1:10:41
Speaker 1: of anything which excited the public mind, seemed to have
• 1:10:45
Speaker 1: been too frightened to make capital out of the murders
• 1:10:48
Speaker 1: and the political cartoons which introduced hammers and razors. The
• 1:10:52
Speaker 1: instruments with which the crimes were committed are but one
• 1:10:56
Speaker 1: or two. Then, as now, in this particular district, the
• 1:11:01
Speaker 1: shopkeepers were in the habit of keeping open until midnight
• 1:11:04
Speaker 1: and later on Saturday, and mister Marr, who was described
• 1:11:08
Speaker 1: as a man mercer or a hosier as the modern
• 1:11:12
Speaker 1: term has it, at a few minutes before twelve, his
• 1:11:15
Speaker 1: shop still being open, gave his servant, Margaret Jewel, a
• 1:11:19
Speaker 1: one pound note, instructing her to pay the baker's bill
• 1:11:23
Speaker 1: and to bring in some oysters, which was no doubt
• 1:11:26
Speaker 1: a Saturday night or Sunday morning, to be more accurate treat.
• 1:11:30
Speaker 1: After the labors of the week, Margaret went to the
• 1:11:33
Speaker 1: baker's and, finding it shut, returned past the shop which
• 1:11:38
Speaker 1: was yet open and her master was still behind the counter.
• 1:11:41
Speaker 1: She then went to get the oysters, but finding the
• 1:11:44
Speaker 1: shop shut up, also returned after a brief absence of
• 1:11:48
Speaker 1: twenty minutes in all, finding the shop closed and everything
• 1:11:52
Speaker 1: in darkness. Upon knocking, she was unable to gain admittance. Presently,
• 1:11:58
Speaker 1: a watchman passed on the other side of the street
• 1:12:00
Speaker 1: with a person in charge, and soon after another watchman
• 1:12:04
Speaker 1: came up, calling the hour of one, who told her
• 1:12:07
Speaker 1: to move on. She explained who she was, and the
• 1:12:11
Speaker 1: watchman knocked and rang, and then was joined by a
• 1:12:14
Speaker 1: neighbor who got in through the back and opened the
• 1:12:17
Speaker 1: door when they together entered the house. This was the
• 1:12:21
Speaker 1: girl's evidence at the inquest, and at this point she
• 1:12:25
Speaker 1: fainted away. A sorry spectacle met their gaze as soon
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: as a light could be procured. There lay the apprentice
• 1:12:33
Speaker 1: upon his face on the staircase, with a great hole
• 1:12:36
Speaker 1: in his skull where his brains had been knocked out,
• 1:12:39
Speaker 1: And with such force had this been done, that portions
• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: thereof were bespattered over the walls and ceiling. Missus Marr
• 1:12:47
Speaker 1: was next found lying on the floor near the street door,
• 1:12:51
Speaker 1: quite dead, her head wounded in a like terrible manner,
• 1:12:55
Speaker 1: and mister Marr's body, without any sign of life, was
• 1:12:59
Speaker 1: discovered behind the counter with exactly similar injuries. The only
• 1:13:04
Speaker 1: other occupant of the house, an infant four months old
• 1:13:08
Speaker 1: whose innocence had not been sufficient to protect it, was
• 1:13:11
Speaker 1: in its cradle, with its throat cut from ear to ear.
• 1:13:15
Speaker 1: Its head lay almost severed from its body. Nothing was
• 1:13:19
Speaker 1: missing from the house, although there were one hundred and
• 1:13:23
Speaker 1: fifty two pounds in the cash box, and the ill
• 1:13:26
Speaker 1: fated Mar had nearly five pounds in his pockets. The assassin,
• 1:13:31
Speaker 1: whoever he was, had disappeared, leaving behind him a large
• 1:13:35
Speaker 1: shipwright mallet which was covered in blood, weighing two or
• 1:13:39
Speaker 1: three pounds, with a handle three feet long, a ripping
• 1:13:44
Speaker 1: chisel eighteen inches long, and a wooden mallet about four
• 1:13:47
Speaker 1: inches square with a handle eighteen inches in length. Mister Murray,
• 1:13:53
Speaker 1: the neighbor, stated that at about ten minutes past twelve,
• 1:13:57
Speaker 1: he heard a noise in Mar's house, like the pushing
• 1:14:00
Speaker 1: of a chair, and the watchman said that soon after
• 1:14:03
Speaker 1: twelve he had called out that the window was unfastened
• 1:14:07
Speaker 1: and had been answered from within. We know it. The
• 1:14:10
Speaker 1: girl gave evidence that while she was waiting, she heard
• 1:14:14
Speaker 1: a child cry, and then someone came downstairs. Prince of
• 1:14:19
Speaker 1: bloodstained footsteps of at least two persons were, it was said,
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: discovered in the rear of the premises, and several people
• 1:14:27
Speaker 1: were taken up on suspicion but were discharged. The churchwardens
• 1:14:31
Speaker 1: of the parish offered a reward of fifty pounds, and
• 1:14:35
Speaker 1: this was supplemented by twenty pounds from the Thames Police Office,
• 1:14:39
Speaker 1: but nothing came of it. End of Chapter two, Part one,
• 1:14:45
Speaker 1: Full and Ethnic Account of the Whitechapel Murders, Part two.
• 1:14:50
Speaker 1: Whilst London was ringing with the news, the terror which
• 1:14:53
Speaker 1: already existed was heightened by the intelligence of a crime
• 1:14:57
Speaker 1: which was equally barbarous and almost most equally inexplicable. The
• 1:15:02
Speaker 1: unfortunate sufferers by the first outrage were buried in the
• 1:15:06
Speaker 1: presence of a large number of people on the Sunday
• 1:15:09
Speaker 1: following and on the Thursday after the twelfth night from
• 1:15:13
Speaker 1: their death, the entire household of Williamson's, with one exception,
• 1:15:18
Speaker 1: was slaughtered. As already stated, on that night between eleven
• 1:15:22
Speaker 1: and twelve, the passers by in New Gravel Lane were
• 1:15:26
Speaker 1: alarmed by a cry of murder which came from a
• 1:15:29
Speaker 1: man clothed in nothing but his shirt, who was hanging
• 1:15:32
Speaker 1: by the sheets of his bed, which he had knotted
• 1:15:35
Speaker 1: together from a second floor window at number eighty one
• 1:15:38
Speaker 1: in that thoroughfare. He contrived to reach the ground and
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: then told those who had hurried upon hearing his cry
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: of murder, that murderers were in the house, slaughtering everyone within.
• 1:15:50
Speaker 1: A couple of men thereupon burst open the door when
• 1:15:53
Speaker 1: they found the mistress and maidservant lying by the kitchen
• 1:15:56
Speaker 1: fire with their throats cut from ear to ear. In
• 1:15:59
Speaker 1: the cellar was the master of the house, also with
• 1:16:03
Speaker 1: his head nearly severed from his body and one of
• 1:16:06
Speaker 1: his legs broken. The grandchild of the murdered man, a
• 1:16:10
Speaker 1: little girl, was happily found alive. But there were evidences
• 1:16:15
Speaker 1: that the murderer had entered the room, doubtless with the
• 1:16:18
Speaker 1: intention of slaying it also, for he was eventually shown
• 1:16:22
Speaker 1: pretty clearly to have been the more murderer, and no
• 1:16:26
Speaker 1: doubt his fiendish instincts were equally strong on each occasion.
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: The noise of the breaking door and the persons entering
• 1:16:33
Speaker 1: the house, however, prevented his carrying his diabolical purpose into effect.
• 1:16:39
Speaker 1: Rushing upstairs, the crowd found the door of a room locked.
• 1:16:43
Speaker 1: As they burst it open, they heard the crash of glass.
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: The murderer had sprung through the window, and in the
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: fog which prevailed, was lost to sight. Then the man
• 1:16:53
Speaker 1: in the shirt found an opportunity to speak. It appeared
• 1:16:58
Speaker 1: that he was a lodger in the house and had
• 1:17:00
Speaker 1: gone to bed, but was awoke by a cry of
• 1:17:03
Speaker 1: we shall be murdered. Out of bed he sprang, and
• 1:17:07
Speaker 1: looking over the stairs, saw through the window of the
• 1:17:10
Speaker 1: tap room a powerful, well made man, six feet high,
• 1:17:14
Speaker 1: dressed in drab, shaggy bearskin coat, stooping over the body
• 1:17:18
Speaker 1: of Missus Williamson, rifling her pockets. Then, upon his terrified
• 1:17:23
Speaker 1: ears came the sounds of the size of a person
• 1:17:25
Speaker 1: in the agonies of death. Frightened half out of his life,
• 1:17:30
Speaker 1: he ran to the top of the house, but could
• 1:17:32
Speaker 1: not find the trap door whereby to escape. Then he
• 1:17:35
Speaker 1: crept back to his room and escaped, as stated through
• 1:17:38
Speaker 1: the window. Rewards were now offered amounting to fifteen hundred pounds,
• 1:17:44
Speaker 1: and a great number of persons were taken up on suspicion.
• 1:17:48
Speaker 1: Amongst them was a John Williams or Murphy, for he
• 1:17:52
Speaker 1: went by either name, an Irish sailor lodging at the
• 1:17:56
Speaker 1: Pear Tree Public House not far off the wall. Billet
• 1:18:00
Speaker 1: which had been left behind was marked with the initials
• 1:18:03
Speaker 1: j P, and a wallet so marked was missing from
• 1:18:06
Speaker 1: a tool chest which had been felt at the Pear
• 1:18:09
Speaker 1: Tree by John Peterson, a ship's carpenter. Mister Vermeili, the
• 1:18:14
Speaker 1: landlord who was at the time of the murderers in
• 1:18:17
Speaker 1: Newgate for debt, was shown the wallet. Murphy's washer woman
• 1:18:22
Speaker 1: stated that there was blood on a shirt and some
• 1:18:24
Speaker 1: on stockings. He had sent to her. More than one
• 1:18:27
Speaker 1: person had seen him near Williamson's house on the night
• 1:18:30
Speaker 1: of the murder, and others proved that he was well
• 1:18:33
Speaker 1: acquainted with both mar and Williamson. Then, with that fatal
• 1:18:38
Speaker 1: stupidity that so often characterizes the guilty, Murphy, when told
• 1:18:43
Speaker 1: on Friday morning of the murder, and being yet in bed,
• 1:18:46
Speaker 1: replied surly, I know it in his dreams too. He
• 1:18:51
Speaker 1: had muttered words sufficient to implicate him, and so he
• 1:18:54
Speaker 1: was apprehended on the same day and committed for trial
• 1:18:57
Speaker 1: on the Saturday, as strong a sq gourt being provided
• 1:19:01
Speaker 1: to guard him on his way to Coldbathfield's prison. Nor
• 1:19:05
Speaker 1: was the caution ill judged. All along the route he
• 1:19:08
Speaker 1: was attended by a howling, roaring mob, anxious to tear
• 1:19:12
Speaker 1: him limb from limb and hurl his quivering flesh to
• 1:19:15
Speaker 1: the four winds. Escort and prisoner were only too thankful
• 1:19:20
Speaker 1: to get safely to the prison. Murphy managed, however, to
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: cheat the hangman, and two days after Christmas, his lifeless
• 1:19:28
Speaker 1: body was discovered hanging by his handkerchief from the iron
• 1:19:31
Speaker 1: grating of his cell. In accordance with the barbaro's custom
• 1:19:35
Speaker 1: of the period, the suicide was buried in the dead
• 1:19:39
Speaker 1: of night at four Crossroads, with a stake driven through
• 1:19:42
Speaker 1: his body. Not many months ago, Messrs Aird and Lucas,
• 1:19:47
Speaker 1: workmen digging a trench for the purpose of lane a
• 1:19:51
Speaker 1: main for the Commercial Gas Company, at a point where
• 1:19:54
Speaker 1: the Cannon Street Road and Cable Street in Saint George's
• 1:19:58
Speaker 1: in the East intersect one another, discovered a skeleton supposed
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: to be that of Murphy, with a stake driven through it,
• 1:20:06
Speaker 1: and some portions of a chain were lying close to
• 1:20:09
Speaker 1: the bones. The death of Murphy did not do much
• 1:20:12
Speaker 1: toward allaying the public panic. A general motion prevailed that
• 1:20:17
Speaker 1: he had been assisted by accomplices, and two of his
• 1:20:20
Speaker 1: friends named Albrass and Hart, were apprehended, but after several
• 1:20:25
Speaker 1: examinations they were discharged. The excitement took a long time
• 1:20:30
Speaker 1: to subside, but eventually the occurrences faded out of recollection,
• 1:20:35
Speaker 1: and now, with the exception of the journals of the period,
• 1:20:39
Speaker 1: there's nothing to keep alive their memory but the innocent
• 1:20:42
Speaker 1: door chain, with which not one in a hundred of
• 1:20:45
Speaker 1: the modern jerry built villas is furnished. Such is the
• 1:20:49
Speaker 1: yarn that old people in London tell young people of
• 1:20:52
Speaker 1: famous murders in Whitechapel. Meanwhile, though the old mystery was solved,
• 1:20:58
Speaker 1: the new is as deep and dire and enigma as ever.
• 1:21:02
Speaker 1: Dorset Street is one of the narrowest, dirtiest little alleys
• 1:21:06
Speaker 1: of all those that go to make up the labyrinth
• 1:21:09
Speaker 1: known as the East End of London. To get there,
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: a cabin had to ask questions, a rare thing, while
• 1:21:16
Speaker 1: his passengers on the journey loses all idea of location
• 1:21:20
Speaker 1: and wonders whether the CAB's horses head or tail is
• 1:21:23
Speaker 1: pointing toward the north. Until today, only a few out
• 1:21:28
Speaker 1: of many million landowners knew that Dorset Street in the
• 1:21:31
Speaker 1: East End existed, But they know it now and will
• 1:21:35
Speaker 1: with all other Englishmen talk about it for weeks. On
• 1:21:39
Speaker 1: the day of the Lord Mayor's Show November ninth, all
• 1:21:43
Speaker 1: interest was taken from that senseless pageant by ragged boys
• 1:21:46
Speaker 1: struggling through the crowds with bundles of newspapers and yelling
• 1:21:50
Speaker 1: that another horrible Whitechapel murder had occurred in Dorset Street.
• 1:21:55
Speaker 1: You've read about these Whitechapel murders, and you know how
• 1:21:59
Speaker 1: the cutting up of some some wretched woman is a
• 1:22:01
Speaker 1: happening which the average Britisher has come to look for
• 1:22:04
Speaker 1: as one of the regular incidents of metropolitan life. It
• 1:22:09
Speaker 1: has got to such a point that those murders can
• 1:22:11
Speaker 1: almost be written up after the methodical fashion which characterizes
• 1:22:15
Speaker 1: the minutes of some school board meeting. Each time a
• 1:22:19
Speaker 1: miserable creature belonging to the most degraded class of women
• 1:22:23
Speaker 1: is mutilated in a most inconceivably horrible fashion, the murderer
• 1:22:27
Speaker 1: has disappeared. The police do nothing but observe secrecy. The
• 1:22:32
Speaker 1: general public theorizes as to whether the murderer is mad
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: or sane, short or tall, English or foreign, et cetera.
• 1:22:40
Speaker 1: The Whitechapel women shiver in bunches, wondering whose turn will
• 1:22:44
Speaker 1: come next, And after a while the terror in the
• 1:22:47
Speaker 1: East End and the curiosity in the West End subside
• 1:22:50
Speaker 1: together until a fresh murder renews them. The last and
• 1:22:55
Speaker 1: ninth Whitechapel murder was not committed in Dorset Street. Properly speaking,
• 1:23:00
Speaker 1: out of Dorset Street, there opens an arched passage, low
• 1:23:04
Speaker 1: and narrow. A big man walking through it would bend
• 1:23:07
Speaker 1: his head and turned sideways to keep his shoulders from
• 1:23:10
Speaker 1: rubbing against the dirty bricks. At the end of the
• 1:23:13
Speaker 1: passage is a high court not ten feet broad and
• 1:23:16
Speaker 1: thirty long, thickly whitewashed all round for sanitary reasons, to
• 1:23:21
Speaker 1: a height of ten feet that is Miller Court. Misery
• 1:23:26
Speaker 1: is written all over the place, the worst kind of
• 1:23:29
Speaker 1: London misery, such as those who have lived their lives
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: in America can have no idea of The first door
• 1:23:36
Speaker 1: at the end, on the right of the passage opens
• 1:23:39
Speaker 1: into a tiny damp room on level with the pavement.
• 1:23:43
Speaker 1: The landlord of this and neighboring rooms is a John McCarthy,
• 1:23:47
Speaker 1: who keeps a little shop on Dorset Street on the
• 1:23:50
Speaker 1: side of the passage. About a year ago he rented
• 1:23:53
Speaker 1: it to a woman who looked about thirty. She was
• 1:23:56
Speaker 1: popular among the females of the neighborhood, who sheared her
• 1:24:00
Speaker 1: beer generously. As I've been tearfully informed and went under
• 1:24:04
Speaker 1: the title of Mary Jane McCarthy. Her landlord knew that
• 1:24:08
Speaker 1: she had another name, Kelly, but her friends had not
• 1:24:12
Speaker 1: heard of it. It seems there had been a mister
• 1:24:14
Speaker 1: Kelly whom Mary Jane had married in the manner which
• 1:24:18
Speaker 1: is considered satisfactory in Whitechapel. They had not gone to
• 1:24:22
Speaker 1: the expense of a license, but published the fact of
• 1:24:25
Speaker 1: matrimony by living in one small room and sharing joy
• 1:24:29
Speaker 1: and sorrow and drunkenness there together. Mary Jane took up
• 1:24:34
Speaker 1: her residence in the little room in Miller Court when
• 1:24:36
Speaker 1: Kelly went away. Since then her life had been that
• 1:24:40
Speaker 1: of all the women around her, her drunkenness and the
• 1:24:44
Speaker 1: number of strange men she brought to her little room
• 1:24:46
Speaker 1: being the gauges by which her sister's in wretchedness measured
• 1:24:50
Speaker 1: her prosperity. On November eighth, she went out as usual
• 1:24:55
Speaker 1: and was seen at various times up to half past eleven,
• 1:24:59
Speaker 1: drinking at various low beer shops in Commercial Street. In
• 1:25:03
Speaker 1: those resorts, she was known not as Mary Jane, her
• 1:25:06
Speaker 1: own name, but as fair Emma, a title bestowed in
• 1:25:10
Speaker 1: complimentary allusion to her appearance at last just before midnight
• 1:25:16
Speaker 1: she went home with some man who appears to have
• 1:25:19
Speaker 1: dissuaded her from making a good night visit, as was
• 1:25:22
Speaker 1: her custom at the drinking place nearest her room. No
• 1:25:26
Speaker 1: description whatever can be obtained of this man. Right opposite
• 1:25:31
Speaker 1: the passage leading to Mary Jane's room is a big
• 1:25:34
Speaker 1: and very pretentious lodging house, where the charge is fourpence.
• 1:25:39
Speaker 1: Some gentlemen congregated about the door at midnight are sure
• 1:25:43
Speaker 1: they saw a man and a woman, the latter being
• 1:25:46
Speaker 1: Mary Jane, stop to laugh at a poster on one
• 1:25:49
Speaker 1: side of the passage which offers one hundred pounds reward
• 1:25:53
Speaker 1: for the Whitechapel murderer. The man must have enjoyed the joke,
• 1:25:58
Speaker 1: for he himself was the White Chapel murder. Beyond all doubt,
• 1:26:02
Speaker 1: this picture from real life of a murderer reading an
• 1:26:05
Speaker 1: advertised reward for his capture with the woman who is
• 1:26:09
Speaker 1: about to butcher is not a usual one. A great
• 1:26:13
Speaker 1: deal of speculation will be done as to whether he
• 1:26:15
Speaker 1: was a cold blooded monster trembling at his own danger
• 1:26:19
Speaker 1: as he read, or a madman defiant of everything and
• 1:26:23
Speaker 1: with difficulty restraining his impulse to kill at once the
• 1:26:28
Speaker 1: men who saw him can only say that he did
• 1:26:30
Speaker 1: not look remarkable. At ten o'clock in the morning, just
• 1:26:34
Speaker 1: as the Lord Mayor was climbing into his golden carriage,
• 1:26:37
Speaker 1: three horrified policemen, who had first looked in through Mary
• 1:26:41
Speaker 1: Jane's window and then drunk big glasses of brandy to
• 1:26:44
Speaker 1: steady themselves, were breaking in her door with a pickaxe.
• 1:26:49
Speaker 1: The Whitechapel murderer had done his work with more horrible
• 1:26:52
Speaker 1: thornness than ever before. The miserable woman's body was literally
• 1:26:57
Speaker 1: scattered all over her little room. A description of such
• 1:27:02
Speaker 1: butchery is unpleasant to write, but is necessary to understand
• 1:27:06
Speaker 1: London's state of terror and to form an opinion as
• 1:27:10
Speaker 1: to this remarkable murderer. Almost every conceivable mutilation has been
• 1:27:15
Speaker 1: practiced on the body. MacCarthy, the shopkeeper and landlord, had
• 1:27:20
Speaker 1: seen the body first. He had gone, as he had
• 1:27:23
Speaker 1: daily for a long time past, to ask for several
• 1:27:27
Speaker 1: weeks arrears of rent amounting in all to thirty shillings.
• 1:27:31
Speaker 1: Though not an imaginative man, McCarthy at once expressed the
• 1:27:36
Speaker 1: conviction that a devil and not a man, had been
• 1:27:39
Speaker 1: at work. This, by the way, is a new theory
• 1:27:42
Speaker 1: in regard to the murderer's identity. The woman's nose was
• 1:27:46
Speaker 1: cut off and her face gashed. She had been completely disemboweled,
• 1:27:51
Speaker 1: as had all the murderer's former victims, and all the
• 1:27:55
Speaker 1: intestines had been placed upon a little table, which, with
• 1:27:58
Speaker 1: a chair and the bed co instituted all the furniture
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: in the room. Both the woman's breasts had been removed
• 1:28:05
Speaker 1: and placed also on the table. Large portions of the
• 1:28:08
Speaker 1: thighs had been cut away, and the head was almost
• 1:28:11
Speaker 1: completely severed from the body. One leg was almost completely
• 1:28:16
Speaker 1: cut off. The mutilation was so frightful that more than
• 1:28:20
Speaker 1: an hour was spent by the doctors in endeavoring to
• 1:28:23
Speaker 1: reconstruct the woman's body from the pieces so as to
• 1:28:27
Speaker 1: place it in a coffin and have it photographed. On
• 1:28:30
Speaker 1: the eighth of November, at midnight, Dorset Street and all
• 1:28:34
Speaker 1: the neighborhood was swarming with such a degraded whitechapel throng
• 1:28:38
Speaker 1: as have already been described in these columns. Those with
• 1:28:42
Speaker 1: any money were getting drunk very fast. The drunkenness of
• 1:28:46
Speaker 1: the poor of London is amazing. Many sober women and
• 1:28:50
Speaker 1: all the drunken ones were crying from terror, while the
• 1:28:53
Speaker 1: men lounged about, singing or fighting and chafing the women.
• 1:28:58
Speaker 1: According to their ideas of humor, gallantry is not rampant
• 1:29:02
Speaker 1: among these whitechapel men. The police were doing nothing of importance.
• 1:29:07
Speaker 1: The woman's poor fragments, put together as skillfully as possible,
• 1:29:12
Speaker 1: were lying in the hounds Ditch marchuary in a scratched
• 1:29:15
Speaker 1: and dirty shell of a coffin often used before the
• 1:29:19
Speaker 1: martuary is in a graveyard back of the gloomy old
• 1:29:22
Speaker 1: hounds Ditch Church, and not a pleasant spot. Late at night,
• 1:29:26
Speaker 1: while the body was being carried from the scene of
• 1:29:29
Speaker 1: the murder, thousands crowded as near as the police would allow,
• 1:29:33
Speaker 1: and gazed with lifted caps and pitying faces at the
• 1:29:36
Speaker 1: latest victim. The police did nothing but pushed the crowd
• 1:29:40
Speaker 1: about and be officious. This to such an extent that
• 1:29:43
Speaker 1: even those whose duty led them to the place found
• 1:29:46
Speaker 1: it necessary to place frequent softening half crowns in policemen's poems.
• 1:29:51
Speaker 1: The most interesting individual in Millercourt was a woman who
• 1:29:55
Speaker 1: had known the dead woman, Mary Jane's Powell. She called herself.
• 1:30:00
Speaker 1: Room was directly opposite the murdered woman's, and its agitated
• 1:30:04
Speaker 1: proprietor stood in the doorway, urging a young girl with
• 1:30:07
Speaker 1: straggling wisps of red hair who had started forbear. Not
• 1:30:12
Speaker 1: to be gone a minute. She assured a reporter that
• 1:30:16
Speaker 1: she would be glad to talk to him while Kate
• 1:30:18
Speaker 1: was away, just to forget the horrors. This woman spoke
• 1:30:22
Speaker 1: well of the dead. Her name was Mary. She had
• 1:30:26
Speaker 1: not always been on peaceable terms with the murdered Mary Jane,
• 1:30:30
Speaker 1: though quarrelsome. Mary Jane was pretty before she was cut up,
• 1:30:34
Speaker 1: she said, and she was only twenty four, not thirty
• 1:30:38
Speaker 1: as she looked. But she would fight and did not
• 1:30:41
Speaker 1: care what sort of place she lived in. Mary's was
• 1:30:44
Speaker 1: about as big as a horse car. Sleeping and cooking
• 1:30:48
Speaker 1: were both done in it. On a clothes line stretched
• 1:30:51
Speaker 1: across it. A night dress was drying. There was a
• 1:30:54
Speaker 1: bed one foot above the floor, a stool, and a
• 1:30:58
Speaker 1: nondescript piece of furniture to hold things. There was milk
• 1:31:02
Speaker 1: and a saucer on the floor, showing that vile air
• 1:31:05
Speaker 1: and worse drainage had brought the kitten down without the
• 1:31:08
Speaker 1: help of hunger. When the girl with the red hair
• 1:31:11
Speaker 1: came back, the woman who had been a friend of
• 1:31:14
Speaker 1: Mary Jane drank in a few minutes a quart of beer,
• 1:31:17
Speaker 1: relating at the same time many incidents in the lives
• 1:31:21
Speaker 1: of herself and her dead friend. At last, with a
• 1:31:25
Speaker 1: flood of drunken tears, she declared that she would never
• 1:31:29
Speaker 1: dare go out on the streets again to earn a living.
• 1:31:32
Speaker 1: Observed somewhat inconsistently that lightning never struck twice in the
• 1:31:36
Speaker 1: same place, meaning that the murderer would never come back
• 1:31:40
Speaker 1: to Miller Court. Made the red haired girl swear an
• 1:31:43
Speaker 1: oath to stay all night, and went to sleep on
• 1:31:46
Speaker 1: the bed with her head the wrong way up. Those
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: who think they have a working plan for reforming society
• 1:31:53
Speaker 1: should take a careful look through Whychapel and see the
• 1:31:56
Speaker 1: things they have got to reform. The girl with the
• 1:31:59
Speaker 1: red hair did not think it wonderful that no one
• 1:32:02
Speaker 1: had heard any sound of the murder. Someone was always
• 1:32:05
Speaker 1: drunk and yelling in Miller Court, and she rightly guessed
• 1:32:09
Speaker 1: that a woman being beaten would make as much noise
• 1:32:12
Speaker 1: as one cut up, so that the murder would not
• 1:32:15
Speaker 1: be noticed. For her part, she was sure to imagine
• 1:32:18
Speaker 1: murder in every direction. Now she had a strong mind. However,
• 1:32:23
Speaker 1: had not had any beer, and did not cry. She
• 1:32:27
Speaker 1: knew positively that Mary Jane was alive at one o'clock,
• 1:32:31
Speaker 1: and for that hour she had heard her singing sweet
• 1:32:34
Speaker 1: violets to whoever was in her room. This fact and
• 1:32:38
Speaker 1: the name of the tune has been solemnly entered in
• 1:32:40
Speaker 1: the police account of the case. It is useless to
• 1:32:44
Speaker 1: theorize any further concerning the murderer. He proved himself a
• 1:32:48
Speaker 1: man of wonderfully cool nerve or most utter recklessness. There
• 1:32:53
Speaker 1: is little prospect of anything resulting from the English detective's efforts.
• 1:32:58
Speaker 1: London has resigned us to wait till the murderer shall
• 1:33:02
Speaker 1: betray himself. The question faces us who was the man
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: who committed these herowing murders. Many explanations have been given.
• 1:33:11
Speaker 1: A suicidal maniac, says one. A crank afflicted with insane
• 1:33:16
Speaker 1: desire for notoriety, says another. A man who has been
• 1:33:20
Speaker 1: injured in some mysterious way by a woman of the
• 1:33:23
Speaker 1: unfortunate class, and who thus wreaks his vengeance. One of
• 1:33:27
Speaker 1: the most palpable explanations given as to the identity of
• 1:33:31
Speaker 1: the murderer was that advanced by John Paul Bocock in
• 1:33:35
Speaker 1: the New York World, ascribing the murders to Nicholas Vasili,
• 1:33:40
Speaker 1: a Russian who committed a series of murders in Paris
• 1:33:43
Speaker 1: some years ago, and who, according to the journalist, now
• 1:33:47
Speaker 1: repeats his fell work in London. Here is the story
• 1:33:51
Speaker 1: of Vasili's crimes. Even if he should not prove to
• 1:33:55
Speaker 1: be the Whitechapel murderer, the story is interesting. No stronger
• 1:34:00
Speaker 1: story of love, crime, fanaticism, and mania has ever been told.
• 1:34:05
Speaker 1: The ferocious stamp of a savage realism marks the history
• 1:34:09
Speaker 1: of Nicholas Vasili from the first as that of a
• 1:34:12
Speaker 1: man unfettered from human restriction, a law, a creed, a
• 1:34:17
Speaker 1: passion unto himself. He was born in eighteen forty seven
• 1:34:22
Speaker 1: at Tispol, in the province of Cherson. At that time,
• 1:34:26
Speaker 1: a religious reform was just beginning to stir from the
• 1:34:29
Speaker 1: time worn ruts of their creed the peasantry and middle
• 1:34:33
Speaker 1: classes of southern Russia. Nicholas grew up to feel its
• 1:34:37
Speaker 1: influence to the depth of his strange nature. He grew
• 1:34:40
Speaker 1: up to be a tall, stern youth, broad shoulders, strong
• 1:34:45
Speaker 1: beyond the common power of his peers, dark eyed, pale faced.
• 1:34:50
Speaker 1: His family were well to do. He did not have
• 1:34:53
Speaker 1: to work, but studied, pondered, and came before his majority
• 1:34:57
Speaker 1: an ascetic in body as in mind. At the beginning
• 1:35:01
Speaker 1: of the year eighteen seventy two, the Russian Church made
• 1:35:04
Speaker 1: a vigorous effort to repress the spread of this fanatical
• 1:35:08
Speaker 1: asceticism in Cherson, of which Vasili was now a leading exponent,
• 1:35:13
Speaker 1: and which seemed to be running havoc among the peasantry
• 1:35:17
Speaker 1: and middle classes. The sect of which he was the
• 1:35:20
Speaker 1: rising apostle was that of the Shorn. When the Russian
• 1:35:25
Speaker 1: patriarchs began to persecute them, some of the Shorn were
• 1:35:28
Speaker 1: for a resort to arms, others went into voluntary exile,
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: and among the latter was Nicholas Vasili. He was now
• 1:35:37
Speaker 1: twenty five years of age and a notable looking man
• 1:35:40
Speaker 1: in any assemblage. He had been well educated at Terespol
• 1:35:45
Speaker 1: and at the University at Odessa, and he had inherited
• 1:35:49
Speaker 1: from his parents an income sufficient to his own frugal needs.
• 1:35:53
Speaker 1: So fierce had been his denunciations of the oppressors of
• 1:35:57
Speaker 1: the Shorn, so vindictive his assents, that he had already
• 1:36:02
Speaker 1: come to be recognized as the young leader of this
• 1:36:05
Speaker 1: peculiar sect of the proscribed through him, was crystallized and
• 1:36:10
Speaker 1: commanded for rigid discipline and observance of the main dogma,
• 1:36:15
Speaker 1: the cardinal principle of the creed of the Shorn, which
• 1:36:18
Speaker 1: was the total abnegation of all fleshy, especially sexual pleasures.
• 1:36:23
Speaker 1: To this creed, he deemed it his duty to convert
• 1:36:26
Speaker 1: the world. He gladly went into banishment, since it gave
• 1:36:30
Speaker 1: him the opportunity to make proselytes. The strength of his
• 1:36:34
Speaker 1: zeal had eaten up his human affiliations. He was no
• 1:36:38
Speaker 1: longer able to agree with even his fellow sectmen. He
• 1:36:43
Speaker 1: went to Paris and made himself known through the letters
• 1:36:45
Speaker 1: of introduction to several members of the Russian colony there.
• 1:36:49
Speaker 1: He did not desire new friends among them, but the
• 1:36:53
Speaker 1: opportunity through them of becoming acquainted with the city, with
• 1:36:56
Speaker 1: the people, and with the Cocottes. He had already devoted
• 1:37:01
Speaker 1: himself to the salvation of Lise amperde. He was now
• 1:37:05
Speaker 1: der selain vetter. In a month or two, his new
• 1:37:09
Speaker 1: Russian friend saw him no more. He could now find
• 1:37:12
Speaker 1: his way about alone. He took bachelor lodgings in room
• 1:37:16
Speaker 1: of Starde. Here his tall, lean, brawny form, his pale,
• 1:37:21
Speaker 1: waxy face, his burning black eyes soon attracted attention. He
• 1:37:26
Speaker 1: got to be known as an enigma. Amid piles of books,
• 1:37:30
Speaker 1: he worked away all day, and when night came, went
• 1:37:33
Speaker 1: out into the streets to wander about until dawn. His
• 1:37:37
Speaker 1: new mission was big within him, but he had not
• 1:37:40
Speaker 1: yet revealed it. Often his concierge would find him in
• 1:37:44
Speaker 1: the morning, bent over his study table where she had
• 1:37:47
Speaker 1: left him the evening before. By and by people begin
• 1:37:51
Speaker 1: to talk of the savior of the lost souls. He
• 1:37:55
Speaker 1: would be seen in the bright light of a cafe entrance,
• 1:37:58
Speaker 1: beneath the street lamps, in the slough ums, at the
• 1:38:01
Speaker 1: edge of a dim cul de sac, wherever the nypstupava
• 1:38:05
Speaker 1: congregated or could be found by painstaking search, pleading with them,
• 1:38:10
Speaker 1: weeping over them, extorting them to repent, lead a new life,
• 1:38:15
Speaker 1: save their souls, and join the sect of the Shorn
• 1:38:19
Speaker 1: from entreaty, he passed on to malediction, and he would,
• 1:38:23
Speaker 1: in strange burning words and with uncouth gestures, draw pictures
• 1:38:28
Speaker 1: of the perdition to which they were hastening, and from
• 1:38:31
Speaker 1: which he begged them to permit him to save them
• 1:38:34
Speaker 1: where they showed a sincere interest in his words and
• 1:38:37
Speaker 1: promised to try to reform. He gave them money from
• 1:38:41
Speaker 1: his own purse, but his hopes for the reformation were
• 1:38:44
Speaker 1: uniformly disappointed. A few nights would elapse, and the same
• 1:38:49
Speaker 1: painted faces and mocking eyes he had pleaded with, and
• 1:38:53
Speaker 1: he thought partially reformed, would present themselves to him under
• 1:38:57
Speaker 1: the gaslight and laugh at the handsome, god utter preacher.
• 1:39:01
Speaker 1: Whether they had cried or fled, frightened, or only laughed
• 1:39:04
Speaker 1: at his earnest exhortations, the result was the same. He
• 1:39:09
Speaker 1: was unable to reform them. He next made the acquaintance
• 1:39:13
Speaker 1: of a young lady who worked in a lace making establishment.
• 1:39:17
Speaker 1: Finally he realized that he, the leader of the Shorn,
• 1:39:20
Speaker 1: had fallen in love. Then he tried to reconcile faith
• 1:39:24
Speaker 1: with passion, and besought Madeleine to become of his sect,
• 1:39:28
Speaker 1: to renounce the world and live for the conversion of
• 1:39:31
Speaker 1: her fellow sinners. She might even become his wife in
• 1:39:35
Speaker 1: a spiritual sense only, and live and work with him,
• 1:39:39
Speaker 1: she demured. He coaxed, Then he threatened and carried his point.
• 1:39:44
Speaker 1: But no woman was ever won by threats, and half
• 1:39:48
Speaker 1: Ashamed of his own violence, Nicholas kept away from Madeleine
• 1:39:51
Speaker 1: for three days. He had never kissed her, only a
• 1:39:55
Speaker 1: hand clasp had sanctified the betrothal. The fourth day he
• 1:40:00
Speaker 1: went to the apartment he engaged for her in the
• 1:40:03
Speaker 1: Rue Serroudlier. The door was locked. When he had knocked violently.
• 1:40:08
Speaker 1: Madame Guida, half frightened, opened her own door and asked him,
• 1:40:12
Speaker 1: what was the matter? I don't know I where is Madeline?
• 1:40:18
Speaker 1: Was all he could stammer out. His face was frightfully
• 1:40:21
Speaker 1: distorted with a terrible presentment. Madeleine went away. Madame Guidra
• 1:40:27
Speaker 1: replied the day you were last here, she said, you
• 1:40:30
Speaker 1: and she had got a home of your own. Did
• 1:40:33
Speaker 1: she deceive me? Nicholas said nothing to this, but demanded
• 1:40:37
Speaker 1: that the apartment be opened. You see, went on Madame Guida.
• 1:40:42
Speaker 1: She removed only a part of her wardrobe. She said
• 1:40:46
Speaker 1: you would come and take the remainder away for her.
• 1:40:49
Speaker 1: Vassili fell into a chair and groaned. Leaping up like
• 1:40:52
Speaker 1: a madman, he forced open the little desk he had
• 1:40:55
Speaker 1: given Madeleine, and ransacking his strawers, finally found what he
• 1:40:59
Speaker 1: had said suspected, a note in Madeleine's handwriting addressed to himself.
• 1:41:05
Speaker 1: He stuffed her other letters into his pockets and sat
• 1:41:08
Speaker 1: down and read out to Madame Guidah Madeleine's last words,
• 1:41:12
Speaker 1: which made a fiend of him. I thank you a
• 1:41:15
Speaker 1: thousand times for all your kindness. I respect, but cannot
• 1:41:19
Speaker 1: love you. I am grateful, but why should I sacrifice
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: my life to my gratitude? That which brought us together
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: separates us. You save me, but you ought not to
• 1:41:30
Speaker 1: ask me as a reward. I cannot reconcile your roles
• 1:41:34
Speaker 1: of gutter, preacher and lover. Forgive me and forget me.
• 1:41:39
Speaker 1: From that time on, Nicholas gave up his proselyting and
• 1:41:43
Speaker 1: devoted his knights to a search for Madeleine. His dagger
• 1:41:47
Speaker 1: in his bosom warmed his heart and promised him revenge
• 1:41:50
Speaker 1: for her scorn. The only woman he had ever loved
• 1:41:54
Speaker 1: could not betray him with impunity. After eight weeks, he
• 1:41:58
Speaker 1: found her where he had first seen her, in the
• 1:42:01
Speaker 1: Rue Richelieu. Without a word, he stabbed her in the back.
• 1:42:05
Speaker 1: She fell at his feet with a scream. He rushed off, mumbling,
• 1:42:10
Speaker 1: she saved forever. She's sure of heaven. She can send
• 1:42:13
Speaker 1: no more now than the gutter preacher disappeared. The Parisian
• 1:42:18
Speaker 1: police looked for him in Vain. A few days afterwards,
• 1:42:22
Speaker 1: a Cocotte was found in a quiet street of Faubourg
• 1:42:25
Speaker 1: Saint Germain, stabbed from behind, dead and mutilated. Three days
• 1:42:31
Speaker 1: later another was found wallowing in blood with the same
• 1:42:34
Speaker 1: wounds in the cortill Muftardne. Tremendous excitement followed the discovery.
• 1:42:41
Speaker 1: In a week another was found hacked and slaughtered in
• 1:42:44
Speaker 1: the same way. Their money, pursed, jewels, et cetera were intact.
• 1:42:49
Speaker 1: In all cases. A panic such as that now in
• 1:42:52
Speaker 1: Whitechapel followed among the fallen women of Paris. Nicholas, as
• 1:42:57
Speaker 1: he afterwards confessed, killed five of them in fourteen days.
• 1:43:02
Speaker 1: On the night of the Arrondissement of the Pantheon, a
• 1:43:05
Speaker 1: dark figure crept up behind a young girl, stabbed her
• 1:43:09
Speaker 1: and started to fly. As she fell, she turned and
• 1:43:12
Speaker 1: shrieked out so that the police heard her Nicholas Vassili.
• 1:43:18
Speaker 1: Then she died in Nicholas's arms, for he too had
• 1:43:21
Speaker 1: recognized her too late. He was seized, dragged to prison,
• 1:43:25
Speaker 1: and tried for murder. His lawyer got him a fifteen
• 1:43:29
Speaker 1: year sentence on the ground of insanity. He confessed his
• 1:43:33
Speaker 1: murders to the jury and told them of his mission
• 1:43:36
Speaker 1: on earth. He regretted that he had not killed Madeline
• 1:43:40
Speaker 1: when he first stabbed her, and when he left her
• 1:43:43
Speaker 1: as he supposed, dying at his feet. The Bloody Monster
• 1:43:47
Speaker 1: was released from the asylum in Terespol on January first,
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: eighteen eighty eight. He was on his way to London
• 1:43:54
Speaker 1: when last seen in January. The Whitechapel murders began in
• 1:43:59
Speaker 1: April eighteen eighty eight. Meanwhile, Jack the Ripper still lurks undiscovered.
• 1:44:06
Speaker 1: After the ninth murder, he sent out the following letter,
• 1:44:09
Speaker 1: Dear Boss, it is no good for you to look
• 1:44:12
Speaker 1: for me in London because I'm not there. Don't trouble
• 1:44:15
Speaker 1: yourself about me till I return, which will not be
• 1:44:19
Speaker 1: very long. I like the work too well to leave
• 1:44:22
Speaker 1: it long. Oh, that was such a jolly job. The
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: last one I had plenty of time to do it properly.
• 1:44:29
Speaker 1: Ha ha. The next lot I mean to do with
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: a vengeance, to cut off their heads and arms. You
• 1:44:36
Speaker 1: think it is a man with a black mustache, ha
• 1:44:39
Speaker 1: ha ha. When I have done another, you can catch
• 1:44:42
Speaker 1: me so good bye, dear Boss till I return yours.
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: Jack the Ripper, if he were the creature of a
• 1:44:50
Speaker 1: romance on the stage, the one immortalized by Stevenson as
• 1:44:54
Speaker 1: Doctor Jekyll and mister Hyde, the Murder of Whitechapel, could

Speaker 1: not play his double game to more diabolical effect. End
