- 0:04Speaker 1: Yes, it's the inside scoop with that f T senior
- 0:06Speaker 1: insider Ken Rosenthal, and you can crack open his notes,
- 0:09Speaker 1: call him in the Athletic.
- 0:10Speaker 2: There's a fresh one for you to check out.
- 0:12Speaker 1: So Ken, let's start with the headliner here, the guy
- 0:14Speaker 1: that we're going to talk about every day up to
- 0:16Speaker 1: the trade deadline unless the Tigers suddenly win twenty in
- 0:19Speaker 1: a row, Trek Scougle. So the latest wrinkle here I
- 0:22Speaker 1: think that I'm trying to understand is who the front
- 0:25Speaker 1: runners can be. Can you explain who might be the
- 0:27Speaker 1: front runners in this case based on their standings?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yes. What I wrote about today, Scott was just the
- 0:33Speaker 3: idea that if you think you have a chance at
- 0:35Speaker 3: winning the World Series, you're going to be more likely
- 0:38Speaker 3: to perhaps part with the prospects necessary and of course
- 0:42Speaker 3: take on the financial burden necessary to get Schooble. So
- 0:47Speaker 3: this stems from a conversation Jed Hoyer, club's president baseball operations,
- 0:52Speaker 3: had with reporters a couple of weeks ago, and he
- 0:55Speaker 3: said that teams that are in position to get the
- 0:58Speaker 3: buy skip the first round, get the weaker opponent in
- 1:01Speaker 3: the next round because that team has already played are
- 1:04Speaker 3: really the best suited to make splashes for rentals at
- 1:08Speaker 3: the deadline. That's paraphrasing what he said, but that was
- 1:11Speaker 3: the gist of it, and that's true. Obviously, if you
- 1:14Speaker 3: think you have a good chance of winning the World Series,
- 1:17Speaker 3: you're going to be more inclined than a team that says, say,
- 1:20Speaker 3: is on the fringes of the wildcard race and we
- 1:23Speaker 3: just want to get into the playoffs because the road
- 1:26Speaker 3: it's that much more difficult. So who are the teams
- 1:28Speaker 3: we're talking about? The teams currently holding the buys are
- 1:32Speaker 3: the Dodgers and Braves. In the National League, Brewers are
- 1:34Speaker 3: right there with the Braves, and then in the American
- 1:37Speaker 3: League gets the Yankees and the Al Central leader, which
- 1:41Speaker 3: right now is both the White Sox and Guardians. Doesn't
- 1:45Speaker 3: mean those teams will stay there, of course, but that's
- 1:48Speaker 3: the kind of thing that makes sense to me that
- 1:50Speaker 3: if you think you have a chance of winning the
- 1:51Speaker 3: World Series, yes, then you part with the prospects and
- 1:55Speaker 3: you part with the money that is necessary to do
- 1:58Speaker 3: this deal. You might do it anyway. You might for
- 2:02Speaker 3: some reason be in a particular position where maybe you
- 2:04Speaker 3: haven't made the playoffs in a long time. Maybe you
- 2:07Speaker 3: have a great system where you can pull this off
- 2:10Speaker 3: and not dent it that badly. There are all kinds
- 2:13Speaker 3: of factors that are evolved, but that was the gist
- 2:16Speaker 3: of it.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Let me ask you this, so a trade gets pulled off,
- 2:21Speaker 4: what do you think from some of these teams, what
- 2:24Speaker 4: do you think the Tigers are going to be looking for?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Is it?
- 2:27Speaker 4: You know three prospects and you know picks. I mean,
- 2:31Speaker 4: what do you think the boatload could be for a
- 2:33Speaker 4: guy like this if you had a thought right now
- 2:35Speaker 4: in your mind.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Tod It's a really interesting question because he is a rental,
- 2:40Speaker 3: and he is a rental who will cost almost ten
- 2:43Speaker 3: million at the deadline in remaining salary. That is a
- 2:48Speaker 3: high price right there, that amount of money for two
- 2:51Speaker 3: months maybe three of a pitcher. And then you add that,
- 2:54Speaker 3: of course to the prospect hall. And yes, they'll be
- 2:58Speaker 3: looking for top one hundred, There's no question about it.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It's Tarek Scooble. They're gonna want a lot and maybe
- 3:04Speaker 3: they'll be realistic, maybe they won't. They probably will be
- 3:07Speaker 3: less realistic earlier than they will later. But it is
- 3:11Speaker 3: a mammoth undertaking. Now I'm giving you the negatives, all
- 3:15Speaker 3: the money you have to spend, the prospects you have
- 3:18Speaker 3: to give up. You are getting Trek Scooble, and presuming
- 3:22Speaker 3: he is healthy and he pitches again today or tonight,
- 3:25Speaker 3: then you're getting one of the top three or four
- 3:28Speaker 3: pitchers in the sport. So there's going to be incentive.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Some team is going to do this. We just don't
- 3:34Speaker 3: know who yet.
- 3:36Speaker 5: You're talking about what jeded Hoyer was alluding to, basically
- 3:39Speaker 5: about you know, you know you just don't want him
- 3:41Speaker 5: for one start? Is that the permeated like thought throughout
- 3:46Speaker 5: the league that if we only have one shot, we
- 3:49Speaker 5: don't want to really push all in because the fans
- 3:52Speaker 5: don't want that from our team, do they? Because we're
- 3:55Speaker 5: all about the fans.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Well, let's face it, you trade for schoobl you do
- 4:00Speaker 3: what I just said, You trade those prospects and you
- 4:03Speaker 3: pay him that money. Those are opportunity costs that you
- 4:06Speaker 3: could devote elsewhere. And if you're going to trade for
- 4:09Speaker 3: Schooble and possibly even miss the playoffs, you're really taking
- 4:13Speaker 3: a chance. If you're going to trade for him, and
- 4:15Speaker 3: you're the kind of team that maybe sneaks in or
- 4:19Speaker 3: gets in even pretty well, but it's not really kind
- 4:22Speaker 3: of ready to go far in the playoffs. We know
- 4:25Speaker 3: who those kinds of teams generally are the things gonna
- 4:28Speaker 3: happen that surprise us. Then maybe you don't do it either.
- 4:31Speaker 3: So that's why I wrote what I did that if
- 4:34Speaker 3: you're a team with World Series aspirations and realistic World
- 4:38Speaker 3: Series possibilities, you're going to be more inclined to make
- 4:42Speaker 3: this final push for a guy who can clearly put
- 4:46Speaker 3: you over the top.
- 4:48Speaker 5: I would say, look at the Tigers and look at
- 4:50Speaker 5: their offense. They almost made the World Series and they
- 4:53Speaker 5: had Trek scouble. But I hear what you're saying, Ken,
- 4:55Speaker 5: I get it, But I want teams to all of them,
- 4:58Speaker 5: to push all in and everybody because I know the
- 5:00Speaker 5: players are pushing one team.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Tigers haven't even gotten to an ALCS with schoobl so yes,
- 5:07Speaker 3: they've had good runs, but that's not far enough. Okay, Okay,
- 5:13Speaker 3: I get it.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I get it, and I'm too biased to the player
- 5:16Speaker 5: who is pushing all in every single day. But I
- 5:19Speaker 5: understand the long term for teams. A team that is
- 5:22Speaker 5: pushed all in and has pushed all in for a
- 5:24Speaker 5: few years with some long term contracts to their players.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Are the Braves what is their outlook looking like? I
- 5:31Speaker 5: get it they had a little, tiny, little move just
- 5:33Speaker 5: here last night, But what does that outlook for them
- 5:37Speaker 5: need to look like? And what do you feel like
- 5:39Speaker 5: alex Anthopolis's history of being a GM there has been
- 5:44Speaker 5: to make those moves good?
- 5:46Speaker 3: Question, Eric, and I'll answer it in a couple of
- 5:48Speaker 3: different ways. First, I believe I said on Fair Territory
- 5:52Speaker 3: maybe a week or so ago, that the Brave system
- 5:55Speaker 3: is not rated very highly. That is true. It is
- 5:58Speaker 3: not rated very highly by the outside publications, by fangrafts,
- 6:01Speaker 3: by MLB dot com, by the Athletic. A fan, though,
- 6:05Speaker 3: jumped me into comments this often happens and said, u
- 6:08Speaker 3: uh uh, our system is really good right now. Now
- 6:11Speaker 3: that's a fan talking. So I actually thought, well, you
- 6:14Speaker 3: know what, maybe I should check see what the Braves
- 6:16Speaker 3: think of their own guys. Now, teams always think their
- 6:20Speaker 3: systems are better than the outside might believe. That's fine,
- 6:23Speaker 3: that's the way it should be. But the Braves generally
- 6:27Speaker 3: do believe that their system is on the rise. Some
- 6:30Speaker 3: of the people think it might even be a top
- 6:32Speaker 3: ten system right now, So they would seemingly have enough
- 6:36Speaker 3: to get Trek Scoogle. That's number one. That was the
- 6:39Speaker 3: first question and the first question for every team that
- 6:43Speaker 3: has to be answered, do you have enough? Can you
- 6:45Speaker 3: make this kind of deal? Okay? Now, Alex Anthopolis as
- 6:51Speaker 3: the present based operations for the Atlanta Braves, has not
- 6:54Speaker 3: generally made huge moves for rentals, expensive rentals. Remember the
- 6:59Speaker 3: year they won, he got all kinds of rentals and
- 7:02Speaker 3: they were kind of piecemeal guys, so Laire and Jack
- 7:05Speaker 3: Peterson coming from all over the place. He hasn't done
- 7:08Speaker 3: this kind of move. He did do it though in Toronto,
- 7:11Speaker 3: if you remember, they traded for David Price, and that
- 7:15Speaker 3: was a big move at the time, and that was
- 7:18Speaker 3: something that they did under Alexanthropolis. So to suggest that
- 7:22Speaker 3: he wouldn't do this, he probably wouldn't necessarily be the
- 7:26Speaker 3: most inclined of the teams that we mentioned, But I
- 7:30Speaker 3: don't know that you can rule him out simply because
- 7:32Speaker 3: their system is stronger and they are a team that
- 7:37Speaker 3: has legitimate World Series aspirations with a rotation that beyond
- 7:42Speaker 3: Chris Sale has a lot of questions.
- 7:45Speaker 1: With over thirty five million downloads, Seakeeek is the number
- 7:48Speaker 1: one rated.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Ticketing app and Kratz.
- 7:50Speaker 1: There are many many baseball games on the inventory to
- 7:55Speaker 1: check out all summer long. This is the season now,
- 7:57Speaker 1: it is baseball baseball season. Not many other options for
- 8:00Speaker 1: you sports wise. I know you can go anywhere you
- 8:02Speaker 1: want to go with Seakeek. There's so many tickets to
- 8:04Speaker 1: choose from. But baseball's center stage now for the next
- 8:07Speaker 1: couple months.
- 8:08Speaker 5: School's out, I'm going to watch some baseball games, some
- 8:11Speaker 5: big league games, all in my area, and I want
- 8:14Speaker 5: to know exactly what it looks like. And I also
- 8:16Speaker 5: want the best deal, so I'm looking for the green,
- 8:19Speaker 5: not the red.
- 8:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 8:20Speaker 1: The green hooks you up with the best deals on
- 8:22Speaker 1: the app. Of course, we have the code it's Territory
- 8:25Speaker 1: ten for ten percent off your next set of tickets
- 8:28Speaker 1: at Sea gek. That's ten percent off any MLB tickets
- 8:31Speaker 1: with the promo code Territory one zero. Make sure you
- 8:35Speaker 1: click the link in the description of this episode that'll
- 8:38Speaker 1: download the app if you don't have it already, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: you'll have the code automatically added to your account so
- 8:42Speaker 1: that you can use that code later. Thank you, see geek.
- 8:45Speaker 5: All right, well then that is what makes me really
- 8:48Speaker 5: intrigued about the Braves. They have young guys on their
- 8:51Speaker 5: big league team, on their big league roster that are
- 8:54Speaker 5: extended for a long time. You talk about the Mets
- 8:56Speaker 5: and possibly Freddy Peralta. The Mets aren't like the Tigers
- 9:00Speaker 5: where they get rid of Schooble. All right, we got
- 9:02Speaker 5: to get prospects and whatever. Is it possible that the
- 9:05Speaker 5: Braves trade from their big league controlled roster to add
- 9:10Speaker 5: a Freddie Peralta to the Mets, who are like, hey,
- 9:13Speaker 5: we want to win in the next three years, We'll
- 9:15Speaker 5: take a I mean Alby's is now a free agent,
- 9:18Speaker 5: but like somebody like an Austin Riley will take a
- 9:21Speaker 5: player that's controlled, which is what David Sterns likes. Or
- 9:25Speaker 5: do you think the Braves keep their entire roster intact
- 9:28Speaker 5: that way and just go to the minor leagues.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Austin Riley's on a big contract and he's been in decline,
- 9:34Speaker 3: So I don't know if that's the best example, but
- 9:37Speaker 3: could something along those lines happen? Yes, except for this
- 9:42Speaker 3: Eric that Peralta is still a rental, and teams generally
- 9:47Speaker 3: like giving up years of proving control for a rental.
- 9:50Speaker 3: We'll give up prospects and they'll kind of do it reluctantly.
- 9:57Speaker 3: But to think that they would give up on it,
- 10:00Speaker 3: don't know, name a Brave. Let's just use Austin Rodley
- 10:02Speaker 3: as an example. It would clear the contract for the
- 10:05Speaker 3: Braves great, but I don't know that that's something that
- 10:09Speaker 3: the Mets would want to do. I'm not sure that
- 10:12Speaker 3: it's something the Braves would want to do either. It's
- 10:14Speaker 3: not the kind of trade we usually see. Not to
- 10:17Speaker 3: say that it can't happen because the one thing I
- 10:19Speaker 3: always say at the deadline. Haven't said it this year
- 10:21Speaker 3: because we're still six weeks away. But things will happen
- 10:25Speaker 3: at the deadline that will make our head spin that
- 10:27Speaker 3: will completely unanticipated. So I'm not going to rule it out.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It's just generally not the way these things go.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Understood, understood totally. Now, I want to talk about the
- 10:39Speaker 4: Blue Jays a little bit. I want you to dive
- 10:41Speaker 4: deep into this team, like I do you think this team,
- 10:44Speaker 4: for one, has an opportunity to get going, to get
- 10:47Speaker 4: back in his playoff picture, to make a run. And
- 10:49Speaker 4: for two, do you see them not being afraid to
- 10:52Speaker 4: go out and get a little more offense As we
- 10:54Speaker 4: move forward here, Todd.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I definitely see them as a team that can go
- 10:57Speaker 3: in and run. And my understanding is they're telling teams,
- 11:01Speaker 3: even though they're over the highest luxury tax threshold, that
- 11:04Speaker 3: they're willing to still take on money. So if that's
- 11:07Speaker 3: the case, okay, how do you take this team, which
- 11:10Speaker 3: has been really mediocre so far and make it better.
- 11:14Speaker 3: The first thing that has to happen is vlad Junior's
- 11:16Speaker 3: got to start hitting for power again. Had the home
- 11:18Speaker 3: run at Fenway yesterday. I know the wind was blown out,
- 11:21Speaker 3: but it was a home run, So that's number one.
- 11:24Speaker 3: When I asked yesterday what their biggest needs were talk
- 11:28Speaker 3: to a few people, I was told a high contact hitter,
- 11:31Speaker 3: kind of someone who would fit into their system right
- 11:34Speaker 3: and obviously a right handed hitting outfielder. Their outfield is
- 11:37Speaker 3: pretty much all left handed, excluding Springer, who really is
- 11:41Speaker 3: more of a DH at this point, so those are
- 11:44Speaker 3: two editions they could make on the offensive side. They also,
- 11:49Speaker 3: much to the surprise of everyone, although I guess we
- 11:51Speaker 3: shouldn't be surprised whenever something like this happens, they need
- 11:55Speaker 3: rotation help. They started the year with like seven or
- 11:57Speaker 3: eight and now they're down, so a rotation piece would
- 12:03Speaker 3: be helpful. And their bullpen is kind of worn out,
- 12:06Speaker 3: so they're gonna need bullpen help as well. But because
- 12:09Speaker 3: they got a taste of it last year, it's my
- 12:12Speaker 3: expectation that they're gonna want to keep going and keep
- 12:16Speaker 3: trying to win with this group.
- 12:18Speaker 5: All right, let's go across to the other side of
- 12:21Speaker 5: the coast and go to the Mariners.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Are you going to start.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Saying everybody wants bullpen help and a right handed platoon bat,
- 12:28Speaker 5: because I feel like if the Mariners can add that
- 12:30Speaker 5: with Canzone and Rally that it would take place of
- 12:35Speaker 5: what Reschneider was supposed to be brought in to do.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Eric, we are going to say that every team does
- 12:40Speaker 3: need bullpen help at every team seemingly is looking for
- 12:43Speaker 3: right handed hitting, and the Mariners are a classic case. Now,
- 12:48Speaker 3: Muno's has been up and down. His stuff's good, but
- 12:51Speaker 3: his results haven't been great. They could use one more
- 12:55Speaker 3: high leverage reliever who couldn't and you mentioned it not hit.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Robles is not a great offensive player, so a right
- 13:05Speaker 3: handed platoon type would be helpful to them, because, as
- 13:08Speaker 3: you said, Raley and Canzone are doing it from the
- 13:11Speaker 3: left side. They believe they can win, and they are
- 13:15Speaker 3: a team that right now is going to a piggyback
- 13:18Speaker 3: rotation because they've got six starters they want to keep
- 13:21Speaker 3: stretched out. They also have a guy dominating doublea Kate Anderson,
- 13:26Speaker 3: number three pick in the draft last year, who effectively
- 13:29Speaker 3: could be their seventh starter. So they have the pitching,
- 13:33Speaker 3: or at least the starting pitching, they just need to
- 13:36Speaker 3: round out the rest of the team. And also, most
- 13:39Speaker 3: importantly for the Mariners right now, they need to get healthy.
- 13:43Speaker 3: They've had guys going in and out of the lineup
- 13:45Speaker 3: for weeks now, and Ros Rain is on the il.
- 13:48Speaker 3: They're waiting to get Brandon Donovan back, so that's got
- 13:51Speaker 3: to be paramount for them as well. And if they
- 13:54Speaker 3: do have at the deadline, and again we're six weeks away,
- 13:58Speaker 3: if they have injuries to certain players that they need
- 14:01Speaker 3: to effectively replace, that's going to drive what they do
- 14:05Speaker 3: as well.
- 14:07Speaker 4: So we talked, we had a conversation about trading draft picks,
- 14:11Speaker 4: first round picks.
- 14:12Speaker 2: It was good. I thought it was intriguing.
- 14:14Speaker 4: But now, another team that you've talked about and we've
- 14:17Speaker 4: all talked about is the Pittsburgh Pirates. They have a
- 14:19Speaker 4: compensation pick, and from what you're hearing down the road,
- 14:22Speaker 4: they're not afraid to trade that thirty fourth pick to
- 14:24Speaker 4: get something special or is that nonsense?
- 14:28Speaker 3: No, that's true, Todd, and that ex exactly what I'm hearing.
- 14:32Speaker 3: And we've seen this kind of trade the last couple
- 14:34Speaker 3: of deadlines, where teams will trade their compick for anything
- 14:38Speaker 3: that they might desire. And it's happened a couple of
- 14:40Speaker 3: times with relievers. It's how the Royals got Hunter Harvey
- 14:43Speaker 3: two years ago, It's how the Rays got Brian Baker
- 14:46Speaker 3: last year. So it would not shock me at all
- 14:48Speaker 3: to see the Pirates make this kind of deal. Follow
- 14:51Speaker 3: this kind of framework doesn't have to be for a reliever.
- 14:54Speaker 3: They traded for one last night, Joey Barr to Atlanta,
- 14:58Speaker 3: Hunter Stratton going back to pitts Burg. But they're looking
- 15:01Speaker 3: for better than that, And yes, the pick could come
- 15:04Speaker 3: into play for anything that they might be looking for.
- 15:07Speaker 3: It would be all on the pitching side, and I
- 15:09Speaker 3: would expect bullpen as their priority.
- 15:12Speaker 5: When you were talking to the Phillies who all wanted
- 15:15Speaker 5: to chime in on the whole, Miseraski and his meteoric
- 15:20Speaker 5: rise to what he's doing this year? Was it Don
- 15:22Speaker 5: Mattingly Wheeler And what were the unique comments that they
- 15:26Speaker 5: made about what they're seeing from the MIS?
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I really liked hearing about this and writing about
- 15:33Speaker 3: it today. So last Friday night, MIS had that incredible game, right,
- 15:38Speaker 3: fifteen strikeouts, one hit, ninety five pitch, complete game shut out,
- 15:42Speaker 3: one of the best games any of us will ever
- 15:44Speaker 3: see pitched. It's against the Phillies. And in the middle
- 15:47Speaker 3: of the game, Manningly turns to Wheeler and says, you
- 15:50Speaker 3: know what this is like what it used to be
- 15:52Speaker 3: when you guys would come into Miami with you and
- 15:55Speaker 3: de Gram and dominate us. Manningly was the manager of
- 15:59Speaker 3: the Marlins for quite some time, and Wheeler effectively or
- 16:02Speaker 3: essentially said, I wish my body moved like that when
- 16:07Speaker 3: I was that age. I wish I had what this
- 16:09Speaker 3: kid has, that fluidity. And even now Wheeler says he
- 16:14Speaker 3: sometimes watches Missrowski into ground for that matter, because at
- 16:20Speaker 3: times he believes he can get too robotic in his delivery.
- 16:23Speaker 3: And those two pictures in particular, they have this unique
- 16:26Speaker 3: flow to them and flow to their deliveries, and it
- 16:29Speaker 3: works obviously extremely well. And Wheeler also mentioned Miserowski's extension,
- 16:35Speaker 3: which is ridiculous. It's the longest extension really of any
- 16:39Speaker 3: picture in the Majors. He is six foot seven. He
- 16:42Speaker 3: gets out there seven feet six inches down the mound,
- 16:46Speaker 3: so that one oh one when it's one oh one
- 16:49Speaker 3: plays up to maybe one oh three, and vice versa,
- 16:52Speaker 3: and all these different equations makes it that much more
- 16:55Speaker 3: difficult for the hitter. Now, Wheeler has great extension two.
- 16:58Speaker 3: He's like top five percent of the league, and he
- 17:01Speaker 3: noticed obviously this is something that helps the miz as well.
- 17:04Speaker 3: But the real takeaway was really saying, I wish I'd
- 17:08Speaker 3: moved like that when I was that age.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got
- 17:14Speaker 1: big news. During squares Biannual Releases event, they launched a
- 17:17Speaker 1: wave of innovative new tools to help local businesses run faster, smarter,

- 17:24Speaker 1: I live, we go to the farmers' markets around town.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I go to the one near Lake Iola. It's awesome.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I use Square to pay with my phone. I get
- 17:31Speaker 1: the receipt right away.
- 17:32Speaker 2: It's great.
- 17:33Speaker 6: And so many businesses, not just small businesses, uses so
- 17:35Speaker 6: many restaurants and businesses I walk into, not only in Orlando,
- 17:38Speaker 6: but all over the country have these and you just
- 17:42Speaker 6: use your credit card, pops out, a receipt, emails it
- 17:45Speaker 6: right to you. It's so fast, it's so efficient, it's
- 17:47Speaker 6: so hassle free. It's one of the great things that
- 17:49Speaker 6: you have going.

- 18:09Speaker 2: Get started today. I want to go to the Yankees
- 18:12Speaker 2: for a second.
- 18:14Speaker 4: You know a lot of talks about their bullpen, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 4: world if they're going to be a World Series team,
- 18:19Speaker 4: this bullpen's got to be better.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Yeah, understandable. I get that. We have.
- 18:23Speaker 4: There's there's some injuries. Aaron Judge is not there. You know,
- 18:28Speaker 4: guys are just getting back off the injuries. What do
- 18:31Speaker 4: you think too, For the Yankees to get over that
- 18:34Speaker 4: hump to win a World Series, they're gonna need at
- 18:36Speaker 4: the trade down, and we talked about school boll Don't
- 18:38Speaker 4: get me wrong, that would be great, But what do
- 18:40Speaker 4: you think their biggest need is as they move forward
- 18:42Speaker 4: into the six weeks?
- 18:44Speaker 3: Right hand, the hitting catcher. We've all talked about that.
- 18:46Speaker 3: There's no question that is something that they are seeking.
- 18:49Speaker 3: You've heard Ryan Jeffers name a lot. He's with the Twins.
- 18:52Speaker 3: He's going to be healthy soon. He would be ideal. Bullpen,
- 18:56Speaker 3: as you mentioned, Todd might be the even bigger priority
- 19:00Speaker 3: because they've got to get it straight. Their bullpen is
- 19:03Speaker 3: not bad and there's talent there, but they need more now.
- 19:07Speaker 3: The one thing outside of a tray they might do
- 19:10Speaker 3: is promote one of their top pitching prospects, Carlos le Grande,
- 19:14Speaker 3: who is pitching in relief in Triple A right now.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Le Grandjey is a guy with one of these amazing arms,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and they believe that he could come up and impact
- 19:26Speaker 3: their bullpen in a big way. Maybe could he even
- 19:30Speaker 3: be what Frankie Rodriguez was to the Angels in two
- 19:32Speaker 3: thousand and two, David Price was to the Rays in
- 19:35Speaker 3: two thousand and eight. The guy who comes up out
- 19:39Speaker 3: of nowhere makes his major League debut when it's suddenly
- 19:41Speaker 3: pitching in the late innings. That's probably a stretch, but
- 19:45Speaker 3: they could dream and certainly he has that kind of ability.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I'm a big believer that if you've got elite arm
- 19:52Speaker 1: talent and teams haven't seen you, you can make an
- 19:55Speaker 1: even bigger impact than the playoffs. We saw that from
- 19:57Speaker 1: Treya Savage last year. That's definitely a thing, So I'm
- 20:00Speaker 1: into it. I'll follow that storyline. Ken last one for you,
- 20:03Speaker 1: we'll take a different turn here. Your thoughts on anything
- 20:05Speaker 1: that was put out there with the latest CBA proposal,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Because we can talk money all day, but these were
- 20:12Speaker 1: some significant changes from MLB that would impact the way
- 20:15Speaker 1: that we watched the sport. You wouldn't have nineteen year
- 20:17Speaker 1: old rookies anymore, right, You'd get rid of that. You'd
- 20:19Speaker 1: have guys come out of I guess you could be
- 20:21Speaker 1: a nineteen year old rookie international but not domestic with
- 20:23Speaker 1: JJ was pissed about and I'd love to hear the
- 20:25Speaker 1: explanation there from the league at some point, But there
- 20:27Speaker 1: were a number of changes that were proposed. Thoughts on
- 20:30Speaker 1: anything that you saw yesterday that stood out.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Scott, you said it's not about money. It's all about money.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It's all about saving money, cutting what they paid draft picks,
- 20:41Speaker 3: cutting the amount of players drafted. The whole thing is
- 20:44Speaker 3: about that. Yes, the international draft would result in those
- 20:49Speaker 3: players getting a higher aggregate, perhaps, but it's all about
- 20:53Speaker 3: cost control. Every proposal they're making is about cost control.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I didn't like what I heard. High school players are obviously,
- 21:02Speaker 3: in many cases risk your draft picks, but some of
- 21:05Speaker 3: the great players in the game are high school players
- 21:07Speaker 3: and international players who are signed not at eighteen, but
- 21:11Speaker 3: at sixteen. And then you're asking the colleges to essentially
- 21:14Speaker 3: become the feeder system for Major League Baseball, to take
- 21:18Speaker 3: over development in many ways, because you're obviously funneling players
- 21:22Speaker 3: to college. And as many people have pointed out, and
- 21:25Speaker 3: this is a great point, college baseball is not about development.
- 21:29Speaker 3: College baseball is about winning. Those coaches are under increasing
- 21:33Speaker 3: pressure all the time to win. Freshmen don't play for
- 21:37Speaker 3: that reason, so you lose a year of development. There
- 21:41Speaker 3: are going to be a lot of proposals, obviously coming
- 21:44Speaker 3: back and forth over the next month, several months really
- 21:49Speaker 3: until next spring training. Some of them can be taken
- 21:53Speaker 3: more seriously than others. I just can't imagine this ever
- 21:56Speaker 3: being adopted in a meaningful way. You might see of this,
- 22:00Speaker 3: you might see some kind of compromise, But it seems
- 22:04Speaker 3: to me and this will happen with the union's proposals too.
- 22:08Speaker 3: They aim here and maybe they get back to here
- 22:11Speaker 3: at some point, And actually it's going to have to
- 22:14Speaker 3: happen with all the proposals that we've seen from both
- 22:16Speaker 3: sides so far, they're going to have to eventually come
- 22:19Speaker 3: down from what they're asking. And what bothers me is
- 22:24Speaker 3: these proposals that the owners are making, it's almost as
- 22:26Speaker 3: if they're operating like the sport is broke. Sport's not broke,
- 22:30Speaker 3: not even close.
- 22:32Speaker 5: How can the owners spin this to be something positive
- 22:36Speaker 5: for the game, because I'm missing it and maybe I
- 22:39Speaker 5: just have one day of the feeling of wait a minute,
- 22:42Speaker 5: you're taking this away. You're taking this away. I get
- 22:44Speaker 5: the money costs, but how are the owners going How
- 22:47Speaker 5: does this enhance the game?
- 22:50Speaker 3: Their point is that college baseball is really good right now. True,
- 22:54Speaker 3: no one would dispute that. Their point also is the
- 22:56Speaker 3: college baseball many of the tools that exist in the
- 22:59Speaker 3: Major and even the miners exist at the college level,
- 23:03Speaker 3: and I'm talking about the advanced analytical and technological tools.
- 23:07Speaker 3: So what they're saying is players can develop better that way.
- 23:10Speaker 3: This will help college baseball. And as for high school kids,
- 23:14Speaker 3: they get a college education more likely than not because
- 23:17Speaker 3: they can't be a major leaguer or even in a
- 23:19Speaker 3: major league organization until they're twenty years old. Okay, but
- 23:25Speaker 3: there's always the other side of it. And the other
- 23:27Speaker 3: side of it here is they want international players to
- 23:30Speaker 3: begin their careers later. They want high school kids to
- 23:34Speaker 3: begin their careers later. And what does that do. It
- 23:37Speaker 3: pushes them further down the line in the age cycle
- 23:40Speaker 3: for free agency.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Bingo.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Oh, and just to take this back to my question
- 23:47Speaker 1: to kick this off to Ken, Oh, it is all
- 23:51Speaker 1: about the money. I just get fatigue from talking about
- 23:54Speaker 1: the money component and say, hey, how can we relate
- 23:57Speaker 1: to this to the sport.
- 23:58Speaker 3: But yeah, it is no saying Scott, I know you're asking,
- 24:02Speaker 3: but it is all about the money. And remember when
- 24:05Speaker 3: they made the initial salary cap proposal, the owners that
- 24:08Speaker 3: the players were like, whoa, whoa, whoa, this doesn't add up.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Something has to be coming out of the amateur side. Bingo.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Something's coming out of the amateur side.
- 24:19Speaker 2: There you go.
- 24:20Speaker 1: There you have the people and thanks for the time.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Have a great weekend the two guys. Thanks
