Transcript
- 0:00So I'm sitting here at home recording with Dr.
- 0:03Enelli and I sort of not sure where to go with this. So I'm just going to say it.
- 0:10When is, when is it the right time to say to your doctor, Hey,
- 0:17we've been together a very long time, but I think it's time that we part ways.
- 0:23You've been with me since I was 18 years old.
- 0:26And quite honestly, I think it's time that we just move in a different direction.
- 0:31That is a very difficult conversation to have. And you know what?
- 0:35I can't think of anybody else I wanna share this podcast and this topic with
- 0:39than our very own Dr. Ionelli. Have faith, let it begin.
- 0:43Talking to your doctor, letting them know how you feel starts right now.
- 0:50It's Monday and you know what that means. Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin.
- 0:57Podcast of inspiration. It's a podcast of hope. It's a podcast of faith.
- 1:04And it's a podcast of friendship.
- 1:07Here is your host, Angel Santana, and special co-host, Dr. E.
- 1:13We're a three-part time. That's it, man. Let's rock and roll. In three, two, one.
- 1:20Have Faith, Let It Begin is on the air. We're with Dr. E. Dr.
- 1:23E, let's get right into it. But first and foremost, how are you feeling?
- 1:26Because we did put a prayer out.
- 1:28We understand that you had a little fall and you reset your,
- 1:33I don't even know how to say you reset your nose, dude, dude.
- 1:36You're like, Hey, you know, Angel, I had a big fall in the house and I have
- 1:39good news for you. My face broke my fall.
- 1:42So the good news is that I'm fine.
- 1:45I did break my nose and I did set it myself.
- 1:49And my nose, as you can see, is straight as an arrow.
- 1:52Maybe with a little bump on it but i think it looks
- 1:55better you know i look tougher that's for
- 1:58sure and and i thank you for
- 2:00for your prayers and what an interesting subject
- 2:04tonight so basically you're asking me to discuss how
- 2:07to break up with your doctor yeah and i and the reason why i'm saying this is
- 2:11because to be very honest i had to do this and yeah well i gotta tell you so
- 2:17the so here's the secret everybody go into the doctor's office tell them that
- 2:22you're breaking up with them and tell them it's you. It's not them. That's.
- 2:28No, but I mean, you know, I'm just kidding aside. So let me ask you,
- 2:31so let's talk about this. This is a very, very fascinating subject.
- 2:35I agree. So if I might ask you a few questions before I can make my comments.
- 2:40So you've been with this doctor since you were 18. Yep.
- 2:44And is there now in your primary care doctor? Is that correct? Correct.
- 2:48Okay. So let's talk about that for a second. So what was the reason that made
- 2:53you think that maybe it was time for you to move on?
- 2:55Well to be very honest because i don't you know i don't
- 2:58sugarcoat here anything i and i'm not going to beat i'm not
- 3:01going to dance around the the answer number one
- 3:04age was a factor right and i don't want i'm not
- 3:07discriminating the fact that he's older what i'm getting at is you know i'm
- 3:12not getting any younger either and i felt that it was a good time to make the
- 3:17change one because he's not getting any younger i'm not getting any older and
- 3:23it's time to get a little younger but what the icing on the cake was,
- 3:27I felt that there was an opportunity to find somebody that was more.
- 3:32Innovative, more willing to, to, to try something new.
- 3:37And, and, and just to be honest, you know, it was some of the medications that I was on that, and,
- 3:44and to put it in the doctor's words is some doctors get complacent and they
- 3:49write the same scripts and I didn't know it, but now with the change of medication
- 3:54and a change of a primary care doctor,
- 3:56I'm on a medication that should have been something, in my opinion,
- 3:59I should have been on maybe five years ago, and I feel even better, even stronger.
- 4:04I love it. So, okay, so let's break this down into categories.
- 4:07You know, the way my mind works.
- 4:08So the toughest relationship that you're going to have to bust out from is with
- 4:13your primary care doctor, especially if you've been with them a long time.
- 4:17So here's the conversation.
- 4:19Angel, you said that beautifully. Number one is that you thought that you wanted
- 4:24to fit with someone who is younger and perhaps more innovative and someone maybe
- 4:29more up to date on some of the new medical techniques or some of the new modalities
- 4:35and some of the new prescriptives.
- 4:37And that's cool. When you're with a primary care physician in the old days.
- 4:44That's a tough conversation because those old timers, the Charlie Strobers out there and the Dr.
- 4:51Ues and the doctors that I love, the primary care doctors that have been gracing
- 4:58the Middletown area forever,
- 5:01they care so much about their patients that I have seen Charlie Strober get
- 5:06in fistfights with people over his patients. And I'm not sure if I'm not
- 5:11Going up to that guy and saying, I'm leaving you, Charlie, because,
- 5:14you know, you're just not my guy anymore.
- 5:16That's a tough conversation because of the fact that he gave his soul to every one of his patients.
- 5:24I've gotten calls from him in the middle of the night yelling at me for something
- 5:27he might have perceived as the wrong care for his patient, for his advocacy
- 5:32or whatever. So that's a tough conversation.
- 5:34But let's exclude that because the truth of the matter is those guys are dinosaurs.
- 5:39They don't exist anymore.
- 5:41The new primary care physician is very stressed and very overworked and has too many patients.
- 5:47And I doubt they would even miss you at all.
- 5:50Even though I always tell you guys on this podcast, do the right thing,
- 5:55have the conversation, be honest, be ethical, and explain to them,
- 5:59honestly, that you're leaving not because of them.
- 6:02They didn't do anything wrong, but you wanted, you know, basically a new,
- 6:06new, a new view, you know, for a different view, a different perspective.
- 6:11And you could even not even say you're leaving them. You could just say, Hey, listen, Dr.
- 6:15Smith, you know, we've been together since I've been 18 years old.
- 6:19You know, I don't feel that great. I'm getting into, I'm pushing,
- 6:23not only pushing middle age, I pushed middle age and now I'm 47 this week.
- 6:28And it's time for me to really get serious about my health.
- 6:31I have two young kids. I want to see them have kids.
- 6:34I want to get a couple of views. I'm going to get some second opinions.
- 6:38If the doctor is worth their salt, they're going to support you.
- 6:41And they're going to say, I think that's a great idea.
- 6:43I have a couple of ideas. If you want me to give you some names,
- 6:47otherwise I support you.
- 6:48Let me know what you want to do. And we'll exchange the records if you wish
- 6:52to, you know, transfer your care.
- 6:54That's the conversation to have. Now, that's the tough one.
- 6:58Now, let's get to the easy ones. The easy ones are your peripheral providers.
- 7:01So your cardiologist, your GIs, your endocrinologist, you know,
- 7:07your rheumatologist, your orthopedic surgeon.
- 7:10Your plastic surgeon, Angel has his own plastic surgeon, only kidding,
- 7:14you know, so these are, these are the easy ones.
- 7:17So these are your tertiary care or specialty physicians.
- 7:21You know, that's just not even a conversation. You just find who you want to
- 7:25go to and just get a record release and move over. So it's really the primary care physician.
- 7:30That's the biggest. But again, please be honest. Please be straightforward.
- 7:34Ask for another opinion. Test the waters.
- 7:38You know, judge their temperament. See if they're taking it personally.
- 7:41See if they're supportive.
- 7:43If they're as good as if you've trusted them since you've been 18 years old,
- 7:47which is 30 years, almost 30 years.
- 7:49Guess what? They should really care about you and they should want the best for you.
- 7:54Angel, how was my advice? I think it's good. And I think also to add to that,
- 7:58and I want to point out, if you're new to this podcast, we've had a lot of new viewers recently, Dr.
- 8:03Ianelli and I both have a second job in addition to our professions, and that's Dr.
- 8:09E's platform. It's called Citizens Reunited to Overcome Cancer.
- 8:13It's called The Crock Podcast.
- 8:15And I'm going to allude to a episode that you did, Know Your Doctor.
- 8:18And I think this is a great segue. I'm going to put the link in the description
- 8:21for those that are listening to today's episode that would really like to get
- 8:24more in depth. You really touch big on that episode.
- 8:28I think it's also being comfortable.
- 8:31You have to feel comfortable with your doctor.
- 8:34And if you start to feel just a little uncomfortable, that could also be an
- 8:38idea that maybe it's time to move on. Wouldn't you agree?
- 8:41100% angel. Why don't you lead us in prayer?
- 8:44Let's do that. So, you know, on behalf of every physician that has lost a patient
- 8:49and all the physicians that gained new ones, we are honoring you and you will
- 8:54always be our hero. You will always be an inspiration.
- 8:58And we know that at one point in our lives, you have done everything to your
- 9:02best of your ability to keep us at good health.
- 9:06Heavenly Father, on this Lent, 40 days and 40 nights,
- 9:11we are asking you to praise the Holy Spirit on every doctor to put your healing
- 9:17hands upon them and to thank them,
- 9:19even if it's a whisper in the ear or maybe a little breeze to the ear,
- 9:25letting them know we've got your back.
- 9:27We leave you all on one major prayer.
- 9:29Clinton, he's another co-host here on the Kroc Podcast. I just got an update today.
- 9:35He's doing better. He had the second heart transplant, as you all know,
- 9:39and it looks like everything is still on the up and up.
- 9:42It's a young, it's a younger heart and he's got a younger attitude now.
- 9:45So Clinton behave yourself.
- 9:47And the two prayers that came in rose fourth, what do you call it? Stage four cancer.
- 9:53We are praying that God takes her home. And that was something that they wanted
- 9:57us to pray for literally that way.
- 9:59And finally, we pray for Rob who's struggling.

- 10:07every one of you know this god loves you god believes in you god trusts you
