Transcript
- 0:15In the vibrant world of Brisbane's progressive metal scene, one name stands out Caligilla's
- 0:19Horse. Since their inception in twenty eleven, they've not only captivated audiences across
- 0:24Australia, but also garnered international attention, with previous releases gaining recognition on the
- 0:29ARIA Chants. The band is now unleashed their sixth studio album, Charcoal Grace.
- 0:34Recently, members Jim, Josh and Dale took a moment to sit down
- 0:38with Heavy to discuss the album and their upcoming is Coast tour. I'm es
- 0:42and you're tuned into the Heavy podcast, Join me as I dive into a
- 0:46conversation with the legendary talents of Caligila's Horse. It's a full house in here.
- 0:58This is exactly wasn't told. I was just like, am I going
- 1:00to get one member? Am I going to get all members? And what
- 1:03am I going to get? You get the first members, you get all
- 1:06three of the worst members you've got. Is if there was like a meat
- 1:10and potatoes of Horse, you have the potatoes. As someone who constantly refers
- 1:18to themselves as a potato, I am part of the club now on a
- 1:25potato for five minutes. So what what is your favorite kind of potato?
- 1:34Look, here's the thing. It's for me. It is a crisp baked
- 1:38potato. But it's been treated well. Okay, you've got to part boil
- 1:42the ship. You've got to sort of rough up the edges a little bit,
- 1:44give it a bit of the crunch. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:46What do you what do you had to said? Baked potato? That's that
- 1:49is also my mouth and that's it. You're not like no sour cream,
- 1:57no bacon, and Jip hasn't got time for that. We're in a progressive
- 2:04metal band. Mate, Do you think I'm made of money? Do you
- 2:07think this is off to a good start? And considering I've really got ten
- 2:14minutes with you guys tonight, you know why why not talk about potatoes straight?
- 2:21The correct answer is roast potatoes won't have anything? Next question, let's
- 2:23go well anyway, thank you all so much for joining me tonight on the
- 2:30Heavy Podcast. Exciting times for Caligula's Horse. You got new music, You've
- 2:35got a tour announcement, and just for listeners that aren't in the know,
- 2:38you guys are releasing your sixth studio album on January twenty sixth. Is the
- 2:44sixth, isn't it? It is the sex sweet I did my job properly,
- 2:49and you guys have already given us a taste of what's to come with
- 2:52two singles released recently. I saw your post on social media when The World
- 2:58Breeds with Me was released, and I really love that small blurb that you
- 3:02posted about the theme of the song. Do you mind expanding on that for
- 3:06listeners? Yeah? Sure. This one's kind of like if there was kind
- 3:10of a snapshot of the themes of the album. I feel like the World
- 3:14Breaths with Me is that because Shark or Grace is essentially like a you know,
- 3:17it's it's full of motifs and stories of things that we experienced or saw
- 3:22during the pandemic, things that we learned from it, and then some some
- 3:23of that is fictional and some of it is deeply personal. But The World
- 3:28Breeze with Me is kind of a zoomed out view of that. So it's
- 3:31sort of taking the whole journey from from the like the loss and utter despondence
- 3:36and the loss of faith in humanity at the beginning of it, and the
- 3:38kind of bitterness of that through to kind of like understanding that we carry this
- 3:43weight together and that you know, I'm as guilty of selfishness as everyone else
- 3:46in our own ways, and then finally realizing at the end that it's you
- 3:50know, the positive takeaway is that it's you know, we're all like irrevocably
- 3:54connected by breath if nothing else, you know, and sort of we're connected
- 3:59to the world through each other, and that that kind of journey is its
- 4:02essentially what we've been on because you know, during the COVID years, we
- 4:06didn't want to do this anymore. I didn't want to write anymore. I
- 4:10had nothing left to say, you know, I had, and I was
- 4:13afraid that that was going to be forever. And coming back and having that
- 4:15realization as a group has kind of led us to chuck or grace as a
- 4:17whole. One of the things, Yeah, one of the things that I
- 4:20love about the world Breeze with Me is that that was just the power phrase
- 4:24that I think you've chucked out at one point as well. I breathe in
- 4:27the world Breeze with Me, Yeah, And that was like the origins of
- 4:30a very simple idea I think at the beginning. That's so cool and this.
- 4:34Sometimes the simplest of ideas are the ones that like, are born into
- 4:39much bigger monsters. I suppose. Yeah, the ones where you know,
- 4:45like I'm trying to write something or I'm trying to sleep. Actually usually I'm
- 4:47trying to sleep, and then I have to go and write something because the
- 4:50idea is there and I have to go into it, which is so unfortunate.
- 4:53But yeah, it was one of those. I don't ever, don't
- 4:56ever ever fall into that trap of thinking that you'll remember it in the morning,
- 4:59you know, I get a yeah, get a pen or convince yourself
- 5:02it's not a very good idea memory has already written. No, I think
- 5:10it's a really beautiful song and such a great sort of snapshot of what a
- 5:15fantastic progressive metal song should be. Too. Like it takes you on a
- 5:19bit of a journey, so is Charcoal Grace. Then is it a concept
- 5:25album or, like you said, just a selection of snapshots about as specific
- 5:31time period. I would say it's not necessarily a concept album. I like,
- 5:35I sort of back and forth over this one, and Sam doesn't think
- 5:39it is, and for a bit I did. But it doesn't fucking matter.
- 5:43But there are definitely like Charcoal Grace, the four part suite in the
- 5:47center of the entire thing is fundamentally a concept song because you know, it's
- 5:51characters and story as well as motifs and themes that carry through everything else.
- 5:56But because of the really deeply honest and personal nature of the other songs,
- 6:00would say that it's basically an album that's just a collection of themes. I
- 6:03think we've anard about that couple of times over the like going, yeah,
- 6:09it's say concept album, and then like more we think about it, like
- 6:13yeah, nah, perhaps you can call it a concept album, but each
- 6:19song stands alone. Yeah, just as well. You can write, you
- 6:26write all the ad copy for this, and that's fine for me. Okay,
- 6:31Oh, just put it on the pile with all the other ones.
- 6:36So do you have Do you have any more singles coming out before the album
- 6:43actually drops? Yeah, we do. We in very early January, we're
- 6:48going to be dropping single number three, which is the Storm Chaser. I
- 6:54went I went blank there for a second, not because I forgot the name
- 6:57of the song, forgot I forgot where I was. It's much worse.
- 7:02It's much worse than it seemed. The thing is you didn't have to say
- 7:05I could. I could so edit that just to make it sound so seem
- 7:09really no, no, no, never edit always always handed. But no,
- 7:14we've yeah, we've got the third one there, it's going to be
- 7:15the last little exciting little tidbit before the album comes out. And then Kaboo
- 7:20January twenty sixth. There it is, yeah, seek and then you've got
- 7:25an East Coaster that you've just announced, which is happening off the back of
- 7:28like a ton of overseas dates as well. So twenty twenty four is already
- 7:30looking like stacked for you guys. Yes it is, Josh, lots lots
- 7:35of time. You're ready to get Are you ready to get fat with me
- 7:39in America? Dude? Oh my god, we're in a lot of trouble,
- 7:41you and me, baby Potato, a lot of trouble. Oh it's
- 7:44it's not it's it's all the high for address corn syrup. But I'm likely
- 7:47to consume without realizing it or knowingly doing it. Yeah, I really am
- 7:54going to eat my way around the country and hopefully burn it off at the
- 7:58shows. Otherwise, Yeah, coming back a different person. What's actually kind
- 8:01of funny about that is that, like While it's a very silly thing to
- 8:03say, it kind of does reflect kind of the nature of what we love
- 8:07to do when we're touring that we haven't been able to do for so long,
- 8:09and that is that, like, you know, we're a bunch of
- 8:13nerds who like to travel. And yes, we play a lot of shows,
- 8:16and yes we don't have a lot of time, but with the time
- 8:18that we do have to spend, we like to do it doing cultural stuff
- 8:20or like walking around and seeing what it's like to be in a place.
- 8:24Sometimes do a little tourism, but a lot of the time it's food and
- 8:26it's you know, just like being in a location. So yeah, we're
- 8:30all really excited about that. I guess people don't don't understand either. The
- 8:33touring schedules are so hectic sometimes you don't get the chance to really do tourist
- 8:37things. So I guess the next closest thing you can do to experiencing a
- 8:41culture is food. It's just stick it in your gob just like that's going
- 8:48to be the headline for this interview. Just stick it in your gobour for
- 8:54this The subtitle for this podcast is can I Eat this? Well? I
- 9:01do want to say as well on behalf of Ossie Heavy fans. Thank you
- 9:05for bringing me all on board. Yes as well, because they are such
- 9:09an underrated band and I cannot wait to see them thanks to you. Yeah,
- 9:13we haven't had a chance to see them live either, like we've we've
- 9:16met the lads online, but yeah, oh you haven't. I was going
- 9:20to ask have you have you performed with them before or anything like that,
- 9:24but no, we've had we've had digital contact. I long I yearned to
- 9:28touch them. That's about it. Yeah. No, it's cool to have
- 9:35an international band here in support and to have that like really strong package going
- 9:39around. I think people are pretty amped as you are about bringing Riddle along
- 9:43as well. I think it's going to be really exciting. And do you
- 9:46have any local supports on as well or I don't think so. I think
- 9:50that the package is just the two bands down. Am I right about that,
- 9:52buddy? It's up in the air. We well, I think I
- 10:01think just having the two is just exciting enough. So oh yeah, yeah,
- 10:05And I did want to say while we're still talking about food, and
- 10:07this is completely not to do, like not going to be in the interview
- 10:11at all. I will edit it out, but I can't look at your
- 10:13band name anymore without because I'm friends with Chris the Malco, and now I
- 10:18cannot look at your band name without the meme that he made of Caligula's sauce.
- 10:26So you can thank him for ruining your name. Not even like a
- 10:28good it's a master foods tomato sauce pot You know what I mean? You
- 10:33mean, the greatest source in existence? How have we not monetized this into
- 10:41a hot source? Gip? What are you doing with your time? Do
- 10:46it? Boys? Keeping? I'm keeping that in now. If someone wants
- 10:50to get on board and help fund this, it's time to sleep experimenting with
- 10:54some recipes. Boys, I'll see it soon wrecked, Let's go dick it
- 11:01on a baked potato. I just got aul of beer and that I think
- 11:13that that is a really good note to end on, since our time is
- 11:16already up. That was that felt like I went so quick? Oh sorry,
- 11:22that's okay. I know you've got a bunch of interviews to do,
- 11:26so no, that's you know, this has been the most fun. If
- 11:28I laugh more than I actually speak in an interview, that's generally a sign
- 11:31that's a good one. Yeah, we covered all of the big topics.
- 11:35Of course we did it home runs. Thank you so much, guys,
- 11:43smash out another interview. We'll see you see you in Melbourne in February.
- 11:50February. No, not February. When is it April to go? Yeah?
- 11:58Please get me the just come down in February anyway. No, you
- 12:01guys will be overseas. Man. I can't. I'm just I'm sorry.
- 12:05You can't can't attend alright. I better let you get to your next one.
- 12:11Thanks, all right, see by. Okay, So what did we
- 12:16learn from this eye opening conversation? Something about an album and lots of rambling
- 12:22about potatoes and hot sauce. The newest release by Kaligilla's Horse is titled Chuck
- 12:26Old Grace and it's out now waiting for you to listen to it in its
- 12:31entirety. The band will be on tour in April, playing the following dates
- 12:35and venues. Thursday April twenty five at Max Watts in Melbourne, Friday April
- 12:39twenty sixth at the Manning Bar in Sydney and Saturday April twenty seven at the
- 12:45Trippet in Brisbane. As mentioned, prog metal band Wheel hailing from Helsinki,
- 12:50Finland will be supporting the Boys on those dates their first time playing in Australia,
- 12:54so these are definitely shows not to be missed. This has been another
- 12:58episode of the Heavy Podcast. Until next time, keep life Heavy. Sh
