- 0:46Speaker 2: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. So let's talk with Carl Lee
- 0:49Speaker 2: and my co host Hollis Lewis's back. He's been out
- 0:52Speaker 2: for a couple of weeks and he is the West
- 0:54Speaker 2: Virginia Project director of Crisis Intervention Team and in community
- 1:01Speaker 2: programming or I guess that's actually just programs, right, Yeah,
- 1:05Speaker 2: And you did give us a little bit of a
- 1:06Speaker 2: brief information about that, and I'm going to ask one
- 1:09Speaker 2: quick question about it to your to the degree of
- 1:16Speaker 2: when you say crisis intervention, like tell us a little
- 1:19Speaker 2: bit like how what is that and how deep is
- 1:21Speaker 2: that in in your position? Actually?
- 1:26Speaker 4: Okay, well, Crisis Intervention Teams Project director for West Virginia. Basically,
- 1:31Speaker 4: what we do is we bring together first responders that
- 1:34Speaker 4: includes law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, behavior health, a community advocate
- 1:41Speaker 4: whether it's mental health, SUD and we train them on
- 1:46Speaker 4: having a better response to persons in crisis. So essentially,
- 1:50Speaker 4: we want to redirect those individuals who aren't necessarily doing
- 1:55Speaker 4: anything criminal justice related in order to get them help.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Because a lot of times, if somebody's in crisis, law
- 2:01Speaker 4: enforcement would get called and there's no other you know,
- 2:05Speaker 4: there's no other choice but either I'm going to let
- 2:08Speaker 4: this person go or maybe apprehend them. So what we
- 2:11Speaker 4: try to do is connect law enforcement, firefighters and whomever
- 2:15Speaker 4: two community resources in which they know are available to
- 2:18Speaker 4: help these individuals who aren't necessarily doing anything criminal justice
- 2:22Speaker 4: related persone other than maybe just being a nuisance, so
- 2:25Speaker 4: not necessarily so in light of.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Law enforcement or something like that, it's you're trying to
- 2:33Speaker 2: get an individual who could actually work maybe one on
- 2:36Speaker 2: one with that individual. Well, yes, we want to do that.
- 2:41Speaker 4: For example, if there was a call somebody's having you know,
- 2:45Speaker 4: some sort of mental health crisis and law enforcement arrives
- 2:47Speaker 4: to the scene, law enforcement can possibly call yeah, because
- 2:50Speaker 4: normally that's that's the point of contact. So law enforcement
- 2:53Speaker 4: could call somebody in behavioral health or call somebody who's
- 2:56Speaker 4: an you know, advocate for SUD and try to get
- 2:59Speaker 4: that person help. And in addition, law enforcement, through our
- 3:02Speaker 4: training and through other you know, things that we have,
- 3:05Speaker 4: law enforcems would know Okay, this person again maybe not
- 3:08Speaker 4: being an expert, but they know, hey, this person is
- 3:10Speaker 4: suffering from you know, this, this or that, and they
- 3:14Speaker 4: would know how to adequately deal with that person.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So you would be actually hand in hand in a
- 3:21Speaker 2: sense with the police officer trying to handle that particular
- 3:26Speaker 2: side of it compared to you know, so if I'm
- 3:29Speaker 2: the cop, I'm kind of sitting there and trying to
- 3:30Speaker 2: let you kind.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Of work out well, not me necessarily, but but what
- 3:34Speaker 4: we do is a team. Yeah, what we do is
- 3:36Speaker 4: help facilitate all that. So we help facilitate those trainings.
- 3:39Speaker 4: And the best thing I like about it and the
- 3:41Speaker 4: best way of these playing we connect those community resources
- 3:44Speaker 4: because a lot of times you have these resources that
- 3:46Speaker 4: are out in the community. But you know, this is
- 3:50Speaker 4: kind of like the right hand is not knowing what
- 3:52Speaker 4: the left hand is doing, although they're kind of naturally
- 3:55Speaker 4: in partnership with one another. So we can make connect
- 3:57Speaker 4: those dots, facilitate trainings in the informational and targeting some
- 4:02Speaker 4: of the similar people exact because there's all the sale,
- 4:05Speaker 4: all those Yeah, when we look at you know, you
- 4:07Speaker 4: go downtown, downtown Charlton, you have a lot of people
- 4:09Speaker 4: whoselfer houselessness, who have sud A substance use disorder issues,
- 4:13Speaker 4: or have some sort of IDD or mental health crisis
- 4:16Speaker 4: happening currently.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And I we'll go we'll go on after this. But
- 4:22Speaker 2: but but just traveling over the last couple of weeks,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I've been actually downtown quite a bit, driving around in downtown,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and I mean it's challenging to you know. I mean,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, pretty much every corner there's somebody on a corner,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and you know, you know, it's kind of and I'm
- 4:42Speaker 2: sure everybody feels kind of like should I give them money?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Should I not? You know what, you know, what are
- 4:46Speaker 2: they going to do with the money once I give
- 4:48Speaker 2: them the money? Like to me, like I'm just trying
- 4:51Speaker 2: to figure out, like what do we do with that?
- 4:53Speaker 2: That's not really a question to you. But you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I mean, well, here's the here's the issue.
- 4:57Speaker 4: It's not that Charleston, if you look at Charleston, it's
- 5:01Speaker 4: not that Charleston has necessarily a houselessness problem. It's just
- 5:05Speaker 4: that Charleston has the resources. So if you're coming from
- 5:08Speaker 4: a community that's a little bit more desolate, a little
- 5:11Speaker 4: bit more rule and you and you're you know, you
- 5:14Speaker 4: don't have a house, you don't have anything. You're coming
- 5:16Speaker 4: to Charleston. You're going to Parkersborg, You're going to Huntington,
- 5:18Speaker 4: You're going to Morgantown. You're going to the communities in
- 5:21Speaker 4: the cities with resources that could you know, possibly help
- 5:24Speaker 4: you sustain you while you're on the street. So that's
- 5:27Speaker 4: kind of the so, you know, being in the city
- 5:30Speaker 4: and having a plethora of resources, you know, it's a
- 5:32Speaker 4: catch twenty.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Two because you're going to have those individuals. Makes sense,
- 5:36Speaker 2: all right. Let's Talk is presented by turning Frank Walker.

- 6:15Speaker 2: opening up, opening football season, the first game. The interesting
- 6:22Speaker 2: component is and and you know this, and I'm and
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'm thinking that when when I say this, that almost
- 6:29Speaker 2: everybody who loves football gets this. So everybody dies for
- 6:35Speaker 2: first for the opening week, can't wait, especially especially collegiate football.
- 6:42Speaker 2: So we're gonna we're gonna focus right there on collegiate football. First.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Usually what you find in collegiate football opening week is
- 6:55Speaker 2: usually not your best game because you because you either
- 6:59Speaker 2: you either are playing somebody who's invited you in because
- 7:04Speaker 2: they think they're gonna beat you. Yeah, or you're the
- 7:07Speaker 2: team that somebody is probably likely going to beat but
- 7:11Speaker 2: you're but usually you're going you're gonna be on a
- 7:15Speaker 2: You're gonna be on away game. You're not gonna be
- 7:17Speaker 2: at home. You're playing up or down. Yes, you're playing
- 7:19Speaker 2: Marshall played at home. They played Stony Brook.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And and that's sort of and and that's changed in
- 7:24Speaker 4: the last couple of years. I think so too, Yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 4: because I mean I think teams now are with the
- 7:29Speaker 4: thought process. Hey, let's start hot, let's try to get
- 7:32Speaker 4: us weekend. Yeah, and take a shot at take a
- 7:35Speaker 4: shot now. You called Stony Brooks, Marshall, you called that
- 7:39Speaker 4: game this weekend? So how was that for you? What
- 7:40Speaker 4: did you see from Marshall?
- 7:42Speaker 2: It was, it was it was actually interesting. And believe
- 7:45Speaker 2: it or not, I wasn't. I wasn't overly impressed with Marshall,
- 7:50Speaker 2: especially early on and and and again first game, everybody
- 7:56Speaker 2: getting the field, and I think the second half, I
- 7:59Speaker 2: think it was clear that they were it was clear
- 8:01Speaker 2: they were the best team. But I felt like there
- 8:03Speaker 2: was a back and forth punt punt, punt punt with
- 8:07Speaker 2: a team that I'm thinking, like, no, you you know,
- 8:09Speaker 2: Like I was in my mind, I had envisioned right
- 8:13Speaker 2: down the field, score, you know, three plays and out
- 8:18Speaker 2: right back down the field and score. I kind of
- 8:20Speaker 2: had that in my mind. And it and and it
- 8:23Speaker 2: was maybe a quarter or so that that didn't happen,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and I was like, what is going on? You know?
- 8:29Speaker 2: And and I'm and I thought to myself, like, you know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and and then doing and thinking and and calling the
- 8:37Speaker 2: game and doing the color for the game is kind
- 8:40Speaker 2: of a easy kind of thing because I'm sitting there
- 8:43Speaker 2: thinking to myself, like, what if this is, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 2: a major team, what if they're playing a major team.
- 8:49Speaker 2: It's kind of hardest s I agree. And again, first game,
- 8:53Speaker 2: first game, and you're playing first game conference, you're not
- 8:57Speaker 2: playing the conference, and you already have all week long,
- 9:02Speaker 2: you're I'm sure coach Huffins was saying, don't take this
- 9:06Speaker 2: team for a second, don't take it. And you're watching
- 9:11Speaker 2: film and you're thinking to yourself and the ain't you
- 9:14Speaker 2: know they they haven't won many games, and you know
- 9:18Speaker 2: we're supposed to be good. There's no way that this
- 9:22Speaker 2: team can beat us, which that's how you end up
- 9:25Speaker 2: getting beat. But so I think when they started out,
- 9:29Speaker 2: I think they were they were they weren't ready. I
- 9:33Speaker 2: don't think they were mentally ready. All the hype is
- 9:35Speaker 2: coming forward to being the first game. You're out on
- 9:38Speaker 2: the field, you're playing and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:40Speaker 2: The crowd's there and you're just excited behind that, but
- 9:44Speaker 2: on the field, it just didn't It didn't show until later.
- 9:47Speaker 4: And it may And again, playing a team that you
- 9:50Speaker 4: you know you're supposed to beat. It may take a
- 9:52Speaker 4: week or two for you to actually, you know, being
- 9:55Speaker 4: at this first game, so it may take a little
- 9:57Speaker 4: while for you to actually get in your rhythm and
- 9:58Speaker 4: get in your mod I.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Think and I think that the coaches coordinate this position. Coaches.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I think they talked. They probably were heavy, kind of
- 10:10Speaker 2: a heavy tone in the early part of the game,
- 10:13Speaker 2: talking about down the road, We're not gonna be able
- 10:15Speaker 2: to play like this in the first half, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: so there probably got that and it was one of
- 10:20Speaker 2: those kind of games that I think that game was
- 10:22Speaker 2: one of those type that you know, the coaches get
- 10:24Speaker 2: to make an example of not playing hard even though
- 10:28Speaker 2: you won. Yeah, you got to go off on them
- 10:32Speaker 2: because you know that they didn't play their best, especially
- 10:35Speaker 2: early on.
- 10:36Speaker 4: And that's always a tricky spot as a coach. You know,
- 10:39Speaker 4: when you clearly beat a team handedly, but you know
- 10:42Speaker 4: there's a lot to break down in film, and it's
- 10:44Speaker 4: not insially a quote unquote great performance even though you
- 10:47Speaker 4: won decisively.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And I'll say this late later on in the game,
- 10:55Speaker 2: they looked really good. But the interesting component is you're
- 10:58Speaker 2: you're talking about a three quarter back situation there. You
- 11:02Speaker 2: got three three guys that you're trying to figure out
- 11:04Speaker 2: who's the guy. I don't know who the guy is
- 11:08Speaker 2: at this point, but there's no way you're going to
- 11:10Speaker 2: be able to go into this game this week with
- 11:15Speaker 2: three guys.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Yes, I'm sure they were kind of testing some waters.
- 11:19Speaker 4: So I probably, I would say probably the coaches know
- 11:22Speaker 4: who that guy is.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna I wouldn't make a guess, but I will
- 11:28Speaker 2: say this, you have to be mobile in today's game.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I would If you're going to throw the ball, you've
- 11:34Speaker 2: got to be mobile. I don't care how well you
- 11:36Speaker 2: throw the ball. Well, no, no, I care about that.
- 11:39Speaker 2: You got to throw the ball to be accurate. Yes, yeah,
- 11:42Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, if you can throw the ball
- 11:45Speaker 2: really well, you better be Tom Brady. If you can't run, okay,
- 11:49Speaker 2: got you? You know what I'm saying, because because because
- 11:52Speaker 2: the day's game, man, it's it's that pocket is not
- 11:56Speaker 2: staying there long and you're gonna have to get out
- 11:58Speaker 2: of it. All right.
- 11:59Speaker 4: So now now in Marshall play WVU. WVU lost the
- 12:03Speaker 4: pen again. I don't know what the expectations of the
- 12:08Speaker 4: fan base were or the pundits, but in my mind,
- 12:13Speaker 4: this was a game that had to be won again.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Not to say they were better or worse whatever, but
- 12:19Speaker 4: I think as a statement piece, I think to come
- 12:21Speaker 4: out the gate strong, and I think for the program
- 12:24Speaker 4: to take that next level, you know, particularly like in
- 12:28Speaker 4: light that there is a twelve team playoff this year
- 12:31Speaker 4: and you got one of twelve opportunities to win a
- 12:34Speaker 4: national championship, unlike any other time in college football history.
- 12:38Speaker 2: So this was one you had to get for me. Okay,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and we and we and we talked about this prior
- 12:44Speaker 2: to prior to I don't know if I mean Penn
- 12:52Speaker 2: State has I think they put I think I said
- 12:54Speaker 2: sixty games, sixty sixty something like sixty games, and I
- 12:58Speaker 2: think Penn State is only one. Maybe I mean West
- 13:01Speaker 2: Virginia is only one, six or eight of them, and
- 13:05Speaker 2: it's lopside of lopside of like yeah, like forty fifty
- 13:09Speaker 2: to eight or something some crazy number like that. I'm
- 13:14Speaker 2: I don't when you say Penn State and WVU, see,
- 13:19Speaker 2: I'm I'm go way back. I'm way older than you,
- 13:23Speaker 2: and I'm thinking I don't remember them winning beating Penn State.
- 13:29Speaker 2: The moment you say Penn State and w it's an L.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's l for you. I mean, I just don't and
- 13:36Speaker 2: what what what's amazing to me, which I guess it
- 13:39Speaker 2: shouldn't be, is like the fan base was upset. You
- 13:43Speaker 2: gotta be upset.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I mean, if you if you look at Georgia Tech,
- 13:48Speaker 4: Florida State, Georgia Tech just made a statement again, we
- 13:51Speaker 4: don't Florida State may not be any good this year, right,
- 13:54Speaker 4: Penn State might not be any good the right.
- 13:57Speaker 2: But but you gotta make But again, you're on the
- 14:01Speaker 2: field with the team that's ranked eight, top team. Yes,
- 14:05Speaker 2: So now when you start talking about eight and you
- 14:08Speaker 2: have nothing behind your name, you got nothing nothing. My
- 14:13Speaker 2: issue isn't really with the team or the coach. My
- 14:16Speaker 2: issue is with the fan base. But I think the
- 14:20Speaker 2: base is right. I'm with the fan base on this one.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I don't think like you gotta win this. I know
- 14:25Speaker 2: you gotta you know you want to win this. No,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I think you want to win. I'm saying this is
- 14:34Speaker 2: a to me. This was again you know, game's over,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you gotta move on with your season, blah blah blah.
- 14:38Speaker 2: But this that game that day was a must win
- 14:42Speaker 2: for me. That's the number eight team in the country
- 14:45Speaker 2: w VU. If you want to take the step to
- 14:47Speaker 2: get yourself in a national playoffs, in the national spotlight,
- 14:51Speaker 2: that's a game you gotta win, because I don't know,
- 14:54Speaker 2: you talking about, you know, maybe jumping into a top
- 14:56Speaker 2: fifteen rank. Not only you talking about having a trajectory
- 14:59Speaker 2: that's gonna take you to the playoffs, but also that's
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to leave recruits transfers that's gonna put a different
- 15:04Speaker 2: spotlight on you. And I get all that. And and
- 15:08Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not mountaineer hating because I'm a Marshall,
- 15:12Speaker 2: No really, I'm not. I'm just thinking, like if i'm
- 15:16Speaker 2: if I'm looking at this game, and I'm looking at history,
- 15:23Speaker 2: WU has not beat them at ten, at least at
- 15:26Speaker 2: a max at less than ten. Okay, but they've been playing.
- 15:32Speaker 2: This is a different era now, you know, year to year,
- 15:36Speaker 2: if you get if you get five good transfers in,
- 15:38Speaker 2: that might take you from from from no rank again
- 15:41Speaker 2: to the college football playoffs. So it's a different it's
- 15:43Speaker 2: it's a different era now. But I think it happened.
- 15:46Speaker 2: But and again I'm not always into the rankings either. Yes,
- 15:50Speaker 2: but I don't know I don't know really how you
- 15:53Speaker 2: picked that. But in this particular situation, a non ranked
- 15:58Speaker 2: team with a ranked team, a top ten ranked team,
- 16:02Speaker 2: top ten, that makes volumes to me that that ain't
- 16:06Speaker 2: gonna that ain't gonna turn out good.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Normally I'm not in most cases, maybe not, but I
- 16:11Speaker 4: just think.
- 16:12Speaker 2: But but you're saying most cases, it did happen in
- 16:14Speaker 2: this and it did.
- 16:15Speaker 4: You're right, You're right. Like I said, I can't necessarily
- 16:17Speaker 4: dispute that. I can't even necessarily dispute this historical significance. Although,
- 16:22Speaker 4: like I said, it's a different era. But I'm just saying,
- 16:25Speaker 4: like and again, even to lose the game, you know,
- 16:30Speaker 4: maybe if it was overtime or you took them down
- 16:32Speaker 4: to the wire in the fourth quarter, that's different than
- 16:34Speaker 4: just kind of just you know, just getting beat up.
- 16:37Speaker 4: You know, you didn't get beat horribly thirty four to twelve,
- 16:40Speaker 4: but you ain't really compete that much neither.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, because because twelve twelve points against an eight an
- 16:49Speaker 2: eight ranked team, Yeah, and you're now thirty four. Yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 2: and you gave up thirty four, I mean, which ain't terrible.
- 16:56Speaker 2: It's not really terrible. You know, if that was any
- 16:58Speaker 2: other two teams. You know, we wouldn't we wouldn't even
- 17:01Speaker 2: be having this conversation probably, but because this is this
- 17:06Speaker 2: is what we have called a rivalry, and and I
- 17:12Speaker 2: was gonna make something I do. I do think that's
- 17:16Speaker 2: where it's at. I do think that. I think it's
- 17:18Speaker 2: that old school, you know. And again, Pitt's right close
- 17:22Speaker 2: to us, penn State, you know, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is right,
- 17:27Speaker 2: you know, it's just just just right up the street
- 17:29Speaker 2: from w U. So it's a rival. It's a rival
- 17:34Speaker 2: in that in that kind of mind, because the statistics
- 17:36Speaker 2: on wins and lasses are not. This ain't pitt w U.
- 17:41Speaker 4: No, I don't think. I don't think Virginia Tech. So
- 17:45Speaker 4: staying with college football, Dabbo Swing. Dabbo Swing, he's acclaimed
- 17:50Speaker 4: coach at Clemson UH national Championships, had a stellar program
- 17:55Speaker 4: up until this current era of n I A on
- 17:58Speaker 4: transfer and Dabbo is one of the few coaches. I
- 18:02Speaker 4: think it's Dabbo Sweeney and Clemson, Navy Army, the military
- 18:07Speaker 4: academies that don't take transfers, and I don't think they
- 18:11Speaker 4: pay do too much with NIL He's basically refused to
- 18:14Speaker 4: do that and he just got. You know, last season
- 18:18Speaker 4: didn't go great. This opening season again, now mind you
- 18:22Speaker 4: they played Georgia, which is kind of like maybe a
- 18:27Speaker 4: semi pro football team at the NFL level talent. They
- 18:30Speaker 4: got beat up on. But I guess the story is
- 18:33Speaker 4: that does he continue down this road or does he adapt?
- 18:40Speaker 2: I think he's going to continue down that road for
- 18:43Speaker 2: two reasons. I think I think he buys it. I
- 18:47Speaker 2: think that he's bought into that belief that, you know,
- 18:51Speaker 2: college football should be the college football that he remembers. Yeah.
- 18:59Speaker 2: And then on the other side, I don't think that
- 19:01Speaker 2: he is concerned about being fired.
- 19:05Speaker 4: I can say he got a sixty million reasons why.
- 19:10Speaker 2: So, Yeah, so I can do it the way that
- 19:13Speaker 2: I want. I'm setting the example because for the people
- 19:16Speaker 2: who sit and sit in a meeting room talking about
- 19:19Speaker 2: this sounds like a great idea, and him, being a
- 19:22Speaker 2: great Hall of Fame, first ballot Hall of Fame coach,
- 19:27Speaker 2: is likely gonna take these ls just to prove that
- 19:32Speaker 2: y'all do what y'all want. I'm gonna recruit. I'm gonna
- 19:35Speaker 2: recruit my guys. If they leave, they leave, we'll play
- 19:39Speaker 2: who we got. See that's I love it.
- 19:42Speaker 4: No, I know you, I love it, but I think
- 19:45Speaker 4: that's terrible and I think it say it's a terrible
- 19:47Speaker 4: precedent because number one, you're not doing as a coach.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Number One, you're not doing what you need to do
- 19:54Speaker 4: to succeed and win, which is your job. Number two,
- 19:58Speaker 4: number two, number two, it's hypocritical because again, don't worry
- 20:03Speaker 4: about the players. You, whether you fire, whatever, whatever.
- 20:06Speaker 2: The biot it.
- 20:07Speaker 4: You got sixty million dollars in a bio, So it
- 20:09Speaker 4: don't matter what happened, you win or lose. They let
- 20:12Speaker 4: you go, you walk whatever. You got sixty million dollars
- 20:15Speaker 4: waiting on you, unlike them players. So what I'm saying
- 20:18Speaker 4: is that you have an obligation to that university. You
- 20:22Speaker 4: have an obligation to those players to do what's necessary
- 20:25Speaker 4: to win. This ain't about proving no point.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I like. I liked that stance. You know that that's
- 20:33Speaker 2: a lawyer kind of stance. I think I think you
- 20:35Speaker 2: did a good job of presenting that. But I'm gonna
- 20:38Speaker 2: make the case that at some point when the system
- 20:44Speaker 2: is broken, and I'm gonna use a horrible one right now.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But if you thought there's a whole lot of people
- 20:52Speaker 2: who thought slavery was right. Oh, come on, I'm just
- 20:55Speaker 2: saying I said, I said it was a bad one.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I said it was a bad one. It's horrible, but
- 21:01Speaker 2: it was the first dedicative of mouth, right, And I'm
- 21:04Speaker 2: and so they and some people didn't necessarily maybe didn't
- 21:07Speaker 2: necessarily do it for the fact of color or anything.
- 21:10Speaker 2: They just did it. They need help whatever, whatever excuse
- 21:12Speaker 2: you use. But I think what he's doing is he's saying, like,
- 21:18Speaker 2: this is how it's supposed to be. I'll take I'll
- 21:22Speaker 2: take my risk because the kids who are not going
- 21:25Speaker 2: to leave, they're gonna get what they're supposed to get
- 21:28Speaker 2: out of that sport. Because see, sports is not what
- 21:32Speaker 2: we've done. What we've done is we've turned sports into
- 21:35Speaker 2: winning and losing. Who's winning is that you get all
- 21:38Speaker 2: the great accolades because you win. Sports is not really
- 21:42Speaker 2: at the ground level, at its core. There are more
- 21:46Speaker 2: kids who play it who get nothing out of it
- 21:48Speaker 2: other than teamwork, discipline, and the things that it's supposed
- 21:53Speaker 2: to bring. And that's what Sweeney is. I think that's
- 21:58Speaker 2: what he's after. He's after the core values of what
- 22:02Speaker 2: it used to be about. No, because because for the
- 22:06Speaker 2: kid that's leaving for ni O money because he only
- 22:12Speaker 2: got twenty thousand there and somebody's gonna give him one
- 22:16Speaker 2: hundred thousand. He's leaving only because of the money. He's
- 22:23Speaker 2: leaving only because of the money. So money, and again
- 22:26Speaker 2: I get all the money that's in sports, especially in
- 22:29Speaker 2: what used to be amateur sports. Yeah, I think it's terrible.
- 22:35Speaker 4: See, I don't think Dabbosweeney Bison in any of those ideas.
- 22:39Speaker 4: I think number one, this is a national championship coach,
- 22:43Speaker 4: so he's about winning, but he's also about which may
- 22:48Speaker 4: be higher than winning. It's not a moral stance, it's
- 22:51Speaker 4: a control stance. And he is at a point, just
- 22:54Speaker 4: like Nick Saban, where now you don't control, you don't
- 22:58Speaker 4: you don't have at least a one hundred percent control.
- 23:01Speaker 4: As we know coaches in the past. Did a football
- 23:04Speaker 4: coach at like, particularly at a major level program, Oh,
- 23:07Speaker 4: you controlled one hundred percent of pretty much everything. This
- 23:12Speaker 4: is this is a control issue. And now that you
- 23:15Speaker 4: don't have control, now it's out of your control. All
- 23:17Speaker 4: these other moving parts now boosters can come in kind
- 23:20Speaker 4: of in and out freely, and it's and it's more
- 23:23Speaker 4: to it, although probably some of This has always been
- 23:25Speaker 4: there in college sports, but it's being more. More's added
- 23:28Speaker 4: on to it. And now that I don't have to control,
- 23:31Speaker 4: I don't want to adapt to what's going on because
- 23:34Speaker 4: if I'm if I'm a recruit number one, if I can,
- 23:37Speaker 4: and I'm sure they give out some sort of nil, right,
- 23:40Speaker 4: but if but now I know that I'm going there
- 23:44Speaker 4: and I'm not going to play with the best players possible.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Because when we talk about transfers, you don't necessarily need
- 23:50Speaker 4: to do like Dion because when you look at the Georgia's,
- 23:53Speaker 4: the Alabama's, the Michigan most of sixty seven percent of
- 23:56Speaker 4: their talent is homegrown. But it's that you may need
- 23:59Speaker 4: that that tackle that you may have to go find,
- 24:02Speaker 4: You may have to find that free safety, You may
- 24:03Speaker 4: have to find that quarterback to come in and fill
- 24:06Speaker 4: a gap. That's really how the transferred porters is supposed
- 24:09Speaker 4: to be used. You're not supposed to do like Dion
- 24:10Speaker 4: necessarily have a whole team every year unless that's what
- 24:13Speaker 4: you just have to do. So I think his failure
- 24:17Speaker 4: to adapt is going to cost not only him, but
- 24:20Speaker 4: it costs the kids in the university as well. And
- 24:23Speaker 4: they got to if I was the university. I'm looking
- 24:25Speaker 4: in a way to get rid of him and say
- 24:26Speaker 4: myself sixty million, I'm trying to figure out.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Sorry, we're gonna take a quick break and I'm gonna
- 24:32Speaker 2: come back and respond to that. All right, We'll be

- 25:34Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
- 25:37Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back. And I'm I
- 25:42Speaker 2: have to respond to Hollis's reality of how he sees,
- 25:49Speaker 2: how he is, how it is yeah, versus how it
- 25:54Speaker 2: should be okay, because I truly believe that there's there's
- 25:58Speaker 2: a there's an actual way that it's should be. And
- 26:01Speaker 2: I think it's I'm again, I'm gonna go old school
- 26:04Speaker 2: on you. I'm gonna I'm gonna stay in the old school.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I'm okay with you paying. Okay, I'm okay with you paying.
- 26:13Speaker 2: But the movement should not because what made you, what
- 26:17Speaker 2: made you go to Colorado? What made you go to
- 26:21Speaker 2: Notre Dame? Coach recruits you and then you the opportunity
- 26:27Speaker 2: of you getting more money or maybe to a different
- 26:31Speaker 2: team just for the sake that your team didn't win.
- 26:37Speaker 2: What lessons? What lessons? What true life lessons are they
- 26:40Speaker 2: getting in this? Because because the reality of this is
- 26:43Speaker 2: not once they get done, so they let's say they
- 26:47Speaker 2: don't they don't show up and not all these guys
- 26:50Speaker 2: that are making money are not making They're not gonna
- 26:52Speaker 2: make any more money going to the pros, and a
- 26:56Speaker 2: lot of them may not even be in the draft.
- 26:59Speaker 2: So so I mean, you you lean college rich, you
- 27:08Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. I mean in some case and
- 27:10Speaker 2: in some cases with a good fresh start. Yeah, in
- 27:14Speaker 2: the life. Yeah, if you're a major program, you're power five.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I just don't. I just don't. I can't.
- 27:22Speaker 4: But I think that's over with all the life lessons.
- 27:24Speaker 4: That stuff is done. I believe that this is business now.
- 27:29Speaker 4: So when we're talking about business, are we talking about
- 27:32Speaker 4: you're gonna do good business or you or you just not?
- 27:35Speaker 4: Are you gonna do business or you're not? And with
- 27:37Speaker 4: Dabbo Sweeney, it's like he's choosing just not to do
- 27:39Speaker 4: business because to your point, Okay, you're paying whatever, that's cool.
- 27:43Speaker 4: And I'm not telling you again, as as I said earlier,
- 27:45Speaker 4: you don't have to bring in a whole new roster.
- 27:47Speaker 4: But if you know you don't have a quarterback, go
- 27:50Speaker 4: find you a quarterback. If you know you don't have
- 27:52Speaker 4: a d line, what's wrong?
- 27:53Speaker 2: But what's wrong with what's wrong with going and recruiting
- 27:58Speaker 2: that guy may not be ready to play, you know
- 28:01Speaker 2: what I'm saying. But then whose fault is that that
- 28:03Speaker 2: you're stuck in that position because you you you thought
- 28:07Speaker 2: that guy, but you thought that guy was gonna be great,
- 28:10Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, now he's not as good
- 28:11Speaker 2: as what you thought he was.
- 28:13Speaker 4: I mean, no, no, not necessarily good as what he
- 28:17Speaker 4: may not just be ready to play at that point.
- 28:19Speaker 4: He made a guy that needs a set for two
- 28:21Speaker 4: or three years. But in that two or three years
- 28:23Speaker 4: of him setting, right now, you got a team that's
- 28:26Speaker 4: ready to go. What I'm saying is like, if you
- 28:28Speaker 4: got a team that's ready to go, but you know,
- 28:30Speaker 4: you need about four to five positions, And I'm saying again,
- 28:34Speaker 4: you ain't gotta go get out the whole the whole roster,
- 28:36Speaker 4: but go fill those four or five position with positions
- 28:39Speaker 4: would experienced guys who are ready to plug and play.
- 28:43Speaker 4: That's what teams are doing. It's like, that's pretty a
- 28:45Speaker 4: pretty simple concept to me. And like I said to me,
- 28:49Speaker 4: he's doing a disservice to the university and his team.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Franklin, I I don't. I just don't see it. And again,
- 29:01Speaker 2: I'm quite a bit older than you, and mindset's probably
- 29:05Speaker 2: stuck in old school. I just I don't I don't
- 29:12Speaker 2: want I don't like it.
- 29:13Speaker 4: I don't like it, you know, I don't like it
- 29:15Speaker 4: because we don't we're not having those those college Saturday
- 29:19Speaker 4: morning heroes like we used to have, like Tim Tebow
- 29:22Speaker 4: being in Florida for four years. That's like awesome, that's
- 29:25Speaker 4: great memories. But that's just not okay. So let's go
- 29:29Speaker 4: to that point.
- 29:31Speaker 2: So here's a here's a guy that is great, a
- 29:34Speaker 2: great college athlete, great, I mean just great, and just
- 29:39Speaker 2: considered the best player in his class. And yet he
- 29:44Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily he doesn't necessarily transit transition very well into
- 29:51Speaker 2: the league. Yeah, and so to me, I see that
- 29:57Speaker 2: as today that guy is making all kinds of money
- 30:05Speaker 2: that for for collegiate football, which is amateur sports. Was was,
- 30:11Speaker 2: but it is that they call it that. And so
- 30:15Speaker 2: now all of a sudden, you could you imagine him
- 30:18Speaker 2: in these days right now? I mean, but see, that's
- 30:22Speaker 2: see I'm thinking that's the difference in collegiate football and
- 30:28Speaker 2: professional football and the judgment or how good you can
- 30:32Speaker 2: be in in collegiate football and still not be able
- 30:35Speaker 2: to make it in the Pros and you're making money
- 30:38Speaker 2: nearly like some of the guys that are in the Pros.
- 30:41Speaker 2: For some guys, for some guys, he would have been
- 30:44Speaker 2: that guy. He would have been that guy. And so
- 30:47Speaker 2: I just I just don't see. I just don't see
- 30:50Speaker 2: how how that becomes something acceptable. And I don't even know.
- 30:58Speaker 2: And again I blame it on the suits.
- 31:02Speaker 4: No, I'm blaming on the suits and the coaches, because
- 31:05Speaker 4: the fact of the matter is players weren't asking for this.
- 31:08Speaker 4: That That's what we gotta remember. If the NC double A,
- 31:12Speaker 4: if the coaches, if they had any scruples about them,
- 31:15Speaker 4: ten to fifteen years ago, all these guys were asking
- 31:18Speaker 4: forth was a couple thousand a month. They were literally asking, hey, man,
- 31:22Speaker 4: can I get twenty five five thousand dollars a month?
- 31:25Speaker 2: They weren't asking for all this. But but you but
- 31:27Speaker 2: but you know, like I know, the moment that you make,
- 31:30Speaker 2: the moment you make two hundred dollars. Yeah, And I'm thinking, well,
- 31:34Speaker 2: wait a minute. You know, I've been here for three years,
- 31:39Speaker 2: and I've been playing my whole three years, and I
- 31:41Speaker 2: deserve four hunts.
- 31:44Speaker 4: But that's and then you know what that might be true,
- 31:46Speaker 4: But the NC double A had the opportunity to set
- 31:49Speaker 4: all they they could have captained, they could have started through.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Now there's no capital now because you're not necessarily going back.
- 31:55Speaker 4: I mean, I guess you could possibly, but I think
- 31:57Speaker 4: at this point some schools will rebel and just doing
- 32:00Speaker 4: what n Cuba totally. And I'm saying they had the
- 32:03Speaker 4: opportunity to say, okay, if you if you're here, you
- 32:05Speaker 4: make this. If you're there, you make this, and it's
- 32:07Speaker 4: just across the board and it's what everybody get. They
- 32:09Speaker 4: had the opportunity to do that, and they didn't. They
- 32:11Speaker 4: fumbled it. Now the result is this, So this is
- 32:15Speaker 4: what happens when you don't, When you don't, when you're
- 32:18Speaker 4: not equitable in the money that you're bringing in, this
- 32:22Speaker 4: is what happens.
- 32:24Speaker 2: All right, So is there going to be is there
- 32:29Speaker 2: even a possibility of a solution? Are we are we
- 32:31Speaker 2: sitting in the room, sitting down and trying to have
- 32:34Speaker 2: this discussion and try to figure.
- 32:35Speaker 4: Out how do we come back? How do we reverse it?
- 32:38Speaker 4: What I mean, it's just a Now. I think now
- 32:41Speaker 4: a lot of a lot of entities have to agree.
- 32:44Speaker 4: So I think if you had the the way I pictured.
- 32:47Speaker 4: It is the for example, the n C double A,
- 32:49Speaker 4: the collegiate presidents, the eighties, and the coaches. They all
- 32:53Speaker 4: have to sit and agree on kind of what's what's
- 32:56Speaker 4: going to be good and what's going to be not good.
- 32:58Speaker 4: And then you're gonna have to your point the argument, well,
- 33:00Speaker 4: we should be able to do this because we we
- 33:02Speaker 4: have these resources.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And then, for.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Example, if if if everybody that I just mentioned agreed totally,
- 33:09Speaker 4: then you got the players you gotta deal with, because
- 33:11Speaker 4: it now they used to getting this, and I can
- 33:13Speaker 4: see a point where players unionize, and once that happened.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Is over absolutely, because because my first thought is so
- 33:20Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a freshman, I'm coming in, I'm getting
- 33:25Speaker 2: you know, five hundred thousand dollars, you know, because I'm
- 33:30Speaker 2: because my future is promising. And lo and behold second semester. Yeah,
- 33:37Speaker 2: the rule change, the rule changes, and now you capping
- 33:40Speaker 2: me at one hundred thousand. That's what I'm trying to say.
- 33:44Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not interested in There's.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Gonna be a lot of guys who ain't gonna be
- 33:47Speaker 4: interested in it. Then you got your boosters. You gotta
- 33:50Speaker 4: can continue who are a wild card of all.
- 33:52Speaker 2: This and and I'll make this case. Yeah, you're right,
- 33:55Speaker 2: this this is this is great for the for the
- 33:58Speaker 2: for the booster who loves his school, is a whole
- 34:00Speaker 2: lot of money in his pocket. Yes, he them up.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Get whoever you want, get whoever you want. And but
- 34:08Speaker 2: I I just don't understand, like I just don't understand
- 34:13Speaker 2: the idea of why why did this, like why did
- 34:19Speaker 2: we really go there? Why did we end up going
- 34:21Speaker 2: down this road so deep.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Again because the NCAA did not make any provisions for players.
- 34:30Speaker 4: They I think what happened is like the pendulum swung
- 34:33Speaker 4: the opposite that they were so stringent, so tight with everything.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Somebody if you buy a player man back in the day,
- 34:40Speaker 4: somebody buy a player a happy meal, or you're intended
- 34:43Speaker 4: the whole programs.
- 34:44Speaker 2: You're done.
- 34:45Speaker 4: We're taking Reggie Bushes all that they went so far right,
- 34:49Speaker 4: now that we're going way far left. And again, I
- 34:52Speaker 4: think it can come back to a middle ground, but
- 34:55Speaker 4: it's gonna take some time, and it's gonna take a
- 34:57Speaker 4: well thought out process to make sure that that you know,
- 35:00Speaker 4: once we come back to that middle ground that we
- 35:03Speaker 4: almost got to almost either, everybody's got to be unhappy
- 35:07Speaker 4: or everybody's got to be a piece to a certain point.
- 35:10Speaker 2: All right, So let's say I'm I'm a suit in
- 35:13Speaker 2: the room and we're sitting around, we're having a conversation
- 35:16Speaker 2: about what we think we can do. My first my
- 35:21Speaker 2: first place is going to be my first comment is
- 35:24Speaker 2: going to be like, Okay, well, one, you can't have
- 35:28Speaker 2: players on your team, collegiate players one year, two years
- 35:34Speaker 2: out of high school making more money than the coaches
- 35:40Speaker 2: who've been coaching for thirty years, you know, and this
- 35:44Speaker 2: is their livelihood. They work all day every day trying
- 35:48Speaker 2: to get the team better. You can't. You can't pay
- 35:52Speaker 2: players greater than collegiate coaches, can you.
- 35:57Speaker 4: I mean, I mean that kind of tricky. I mean,
- 36:01Speaker 4: I see where you're going with that. I mean, that's it,
- 36:03Speaker 4: and that's I think that's a fair point. But I
- 36:05Speaker 4: don't think you. I think the way you phrase stuff
- 36:07Speaker 4: is important too. I just think I think you do
- 36:09Speaker 4: what the NFL did and just have caps like you
- 36:12Speaker 4: Just like I said, you have caps, and I think like,
- 36:15Speaker 4: if you're coming in, this is what you get, and
- 36:17Speaker 4: if you hear, this is what you get. And then
- 36:19Speaker 4: you have caps on movement like man, you don't get
- 36:21Speaker 4: to transfer five and six times, you get one transfer.
- 36:24Speaker 4: So say a freshman comes in, he's and and he's
- 36:29Speaker 4: does every freshman get paid or are we paying just
- 36:32Speaker 4: the top you? You you have a cap, so this
- 36:35Speaker 4: is what you can get paid here, or you can
- 36:36Speaker 4: go zero, just like the NFL. The NFL has a
- 36:40Speaker 4: rookie cap.
- 36:40Speaker 2: So so if I've got so if my cap is
- 36:42Speaker 2: ten dollars, so I got ten dollars as a cap,
- 36:45Speaker 2: and I'm coaching ten buck two right, so I got
- 36:49Speaker 2: ten bucks. So my ten bucks is gonna spread out
- 36:51Speaker 2: through you manage it however you want so, and I
- 36:55Speaker 2: gave it all the one guy. Yeah that's and like
- 36:58Speaker 2: I said, you you got what. I'm not even saying
- 37:00Speaker 2: that I would just try that.
- 37:01Speaker 4: I'm just saying, like this, you can't make more than
- 37:03Speaker 4: this coming in and you're a freshman. You're not signing
- 37:05Speaker 4: for half a mill or a million dollars. In your
- 37:08Speaker 4: freshman you get one hundred thousand dollars. And as you
- 37:11Speaker 4: move up to scale, this is what it is. Number
- 37:13Speaker 4: one is going. I think it could encourage athletes to
- 37:16Speaker 4: stay in college longer, which I think nil kind of
- 37:18Speaker 4: does or maybe does it in some instances. And then
- 37:22Speaker 4: unless you're not, unless you're sure you're going to be
- 37:24Speaker 4: productive in the NFL, or you're going to go first,
- 37:27Speaker 4: you might as well stay there. And again, and what
- 37:29Speaker 4: we're saying, everybody ain't getting paid like this anyway.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Like even now we're talking about we're talking about the
- 37:34Speaker 2: elite to guys, you know what I'm saying. And see,
- 37:37Speaker 2: I don't like the fact that that let's say the
- 37:40Speaker 2: roster is one hundred, one hundred kids on the college program.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I understand that one should not one shouldn't have to
- 37:53Speaker 2: be let's say a hundred. The guy who's the one
- 37:57Speaker 2: hundred player on that team cannot make the money that
- 38:00Speaker 2: the number one guy makes. But it should not be
- 38:06Speaker 2: that big of a difference. If you recruited me here
- 38:10Speaker 2: and brought me here to play here.
- 38:12Speaker 4: And you are what you're worth, man, I mean, you
- 38:14Speaker 4: can't necessarily say that personal okay.
- 38:15Speaker 2: So so again, so if we're saying it's okay, so
- 38:18Speaker 2: it's five hundred dollars for the for the whole roster,
- 38:20Speaker 2: you got five hundred dollars for the whole roster, and
- 38:24Speaker 2: you got you got bo Jackson. Okay, he's your running
- 38:29Speaker 2: back and he's a junior, right he gonna he basically
- 38:34Speaker 2: could eat up.
- 38:36Speaker 4: You know, I guess the model in Wich. I'm saying
- 38:38Speaker 4: is that number? And I think what And when I
- 38:41Speaker 4: say cap, I don't mean as cap as though this
- 38:44Speaker 4: is the total bank that you're working with.
- 38:46Speaker 2: See that's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking. I mean, I
- 38:49Speaker 2: think that you put a cap on it, and.
- 38:51Speaker 4: You mean can't buy like a classification. So like if
- 38:55Speaker 4: you're a freshman, you make this, if you're so, and
- 38:58Speaker 4: again and again i'm this is what you made, This
- 39:02Speaker 4: is what you made, and again I can go. And
- 39:05Speaker 4: then you have incentives built into that. So we make
- 39:07Speaker 4: the playoffs, you get this bump. If you break this
- 39:09Speaker 4: recor you get this bump, you win the highs and
- 39:11Speaker 4: win the double War, you get this bumah. So I'm saying,
- 39:14Speaker 4: I'm saying like that, like you're not We're not. If
- 39:16Speaker 4: you're Alabama, Georgia, you're not coming in. You're not you're
- 39:19Speaker 4: not making peanuts. We're still gonna pay you a good amount,
- 39:21Speaker 4: but it's like we're not gonna have it. So where
- 39:24Speaker 4: it's it's it's it's it's so up and down between
- 39:27Speaker 4: programs and speaking of suits, So I want to so
- 39:31Speaker 4: in addition to Marshall, you actually called the Hontington and
- 39:34Speaker 4: Hurricane game. And I don't know what it was about
- 39:38Speaker 4: this week, all these gathers like it was just lightning.
- 39:41Speaker 4: It was a lightning and rain fest all last week
- 39:44Speaker 4: and these games ended up starting at like nine thirty
- 39:47Speaker 4: ten o'clock. I mean, in addition to what we seen
- 39:51Speaker 4: with the West Virginia and we talked Westernion high school sports,
- 39:54Speaker 4: in addition what we've seen as far as the classification debacle,
- 39:58Speaker 4: and then these games last week so late. I mean,
- 40:02Speaker 4: what kind of what was your thoughts on that? I mean,
- 40:05Speaker 4: do we just hey, we're gonna play tomorrow? I mean,
- 40:08Speaker 4: do we do we need to start games at ten o'clock?
- 40:12Speaker 2: We got through about a quarter and some before they
- 40:21Speaker 2: went off the field, and when they came back, I
- 40:23Speaker 2: think they had like maybe about six or seven minutes left.
- 40:30Speaker 2: My first concern was like, because that had never happened.
- 40:35Speaker 2: I mean I had actually not, you know, we didn't
- 40:37Speaker 2: have that issue. You know, I never as much rain
- 40:40Speaker 2: as I played in. I never been in a rain
- 40:45Speaker 2: or thunder and lightning delay. Yeah, I don't think I'm
- 40:48Speaker 2: not not to that not that long. I'm not a couple,
- 40:51Speaker 2: but not that long. I don't even remember at all. Okay,
- 40:54Speaker 2: So I'm trying to figure out what is going on
- 40:57Speaker 2: in the locker room, Like how do you you know?
- 41:02Speaker 2: What do you do? I mean, you know, you hype
- 41:05Speaker 2: for the game, You get out there, and you get
- 41:07Speaker 2: a quarter in a little bit of minutes, and then
- 41:10Speaker 2: now you you you're sitting and you have no idea
- 41:14Speaker 2: how long it's gonna take. And every time you hear
- 41:17Speaker 2: thunder you have to assume it's thunder and lightning. So minutes,
- 41:20Speaker 2: another thirty minutes. I don't know how you come back
- 41:24Speaker 2: out and be ready to go. I just don't know
- 41:28Speaker 2: what that does mentally. But I'll say this, both of
- 41:34Speaker 2: those teams did come out as almost as if they
- 41:38Speaker 2: had not left the field.
- 41:40Speaker 4: And I say, in West Virginia High School for butall
- 41:43Speaker 4: those are elite programs, Yes, those are.
- 41:46Speaker 2: You would make the case that those are some of
- 41:47Speaker 2: the top programs, you know, And and and they got
- 41:51Speaker 2: to start.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I'm saying, like GW Capital, I went to South Charleston game,
- 41:56Speaker 4: they didn't start until like ten, nine thirty ten the clock.
- 42:00Speaker 2: That's when they.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Because it was delays in the beginning, so they started later.
- 42:04Speaker 4: So I'm just like, at some point, like, why aren't
- 42:07Speaker 4: we just say, hey, we'll just we'll play this thing tomorrow.
- 42:10Speaker 4: I don't understand the logic in that.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I guess it's it's like if you don't want like
- 42:18Speaker 2: everybody to go home and come back. But like the
- 42:21Speaker 2: Marshall game, man, like where it was before the lightning,
- 42:27Speaker 2: it never got back to that in the stands, those
- 42:29Speaker 2: folks they were there was not a lot of I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 2: it was a decent amount that came back, but not
- 42:35Speaker 2: merely what was there prior to. Yeah, I was.
- 42:38Speaker 4: I was at GW in South Charles and I tried
- 42:40Speaker 4: to stay and I left both Yeah I want to
- 42:43Speaker 4: wait two hours?
- 42:44Speaker 2: Yeah, because you because now you're sitting there thinking, one
- 42:47Speaker 2: you got to go back to your car. Yeah, sitting
- 42:49Speaker 2: in your car. You're watching it rain, rain, rain, rain.
- 42:52Speaker 2: You're almost to a point like, man, I ain't even
- 42:54Speaker 2: gonna go back in See, I couldn't imagine, you know,
- 42:57Speaker 2: I couldn't if I'd have gone to my car. Man,
- 42:59Speaker 2: I'm going home. You know what I'm saying. It was,
- 43:02Speaker 2: It was.
- 43:02Speaker 4: It was a tough opening weekend for high school sports
- 43:04Speaker 4: around here, for football that is.
- 43:06Speaker 2: But that was but fortunately the game was you know,
- 43:11Speaker 2: let me, I'm going back. I'm going to Huntington and
- 43:14Speaker 2: and and Hurricane game. It was a good game, Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 2: it was. It was interesting to me because what what
- 43:25Speaker 2: what you could tell. What you could tell was, you know,
- 43:29Speaker 2: Mays was mas is really a good offensive really good
- 43:33Speaker 2: offensive coach, you know, because but I don't think either
- 43:36Speaker 2: team had played very good defense early on, and it
- 43:41Speaker 2: was first week, you know, but so so it was
- 43:47Speaker 2: just interesting to me to watch those two teams play
- 43:50Speaker 2: and try to figure out, you know, who's who's coming
- 43:55Speaker 2: out of there, who's going to be the team that's
- 43:57Speaker 2: gonna come out of there with with the best mind set,
- 44:00Speaker 2: you know, because it's because it was close. Game could
- 44:02Speaker 2: have gone and could have been could have easily gone
- 44:05Speaker 2: overtime and anybody could have won. So now both teams
- 44:13Speaker 2: just got to have the conversation and saying to the
- 44:17Speaker 2: both teams coaches talking to their teams, we're gonna see
- 44:21Speaker 2: this team again, and we got to do better, you know,
- 44:26Speaker 2: because you barely want, I mean, you're the block of
- 44:28Speaker 2: kid to to win the game, you know, and I'll
- 44:32Speaker 2: say this, you know. One of the things that I
- 44:37Speaker 2: think if there's anything that, if there's anything negative, if
- 44:40Speaker 2: you want to call it negative for Maze, is I
- 44:44Speaker 2: think he's such a focused offensive guy that I'm not
- 44:49Speaker 2: sure and I can't and I can't prove this or not,
- 44:52Speaker 2: but it just I'm not sure, Like, you know, everything
- 44:56Speaker 2: like that should have been you know, that kick should
- 45:00Speaker 2: have got off to me, you know what I'm saying,
- 45:03Speaker 2: because man, I'm talking about there was a lot of
- 45:05Speaker 2: guys through there. H and yeah and that and and
- 45:09Speaker 2: that ended up hurting bad. Yes, yes, And I just
- 45:13Speaker 2: think you know, just if if if that if fieldbow
- 45:19Speaker 2: Block team is better, we'ren overtime and got a chance
- 45:22Speaker 2: to win. Yeah, it was tough, man.
- 45:24Speaker 4: I Like I watched the game on the app and
- 45:27Speaker 4: it's just like Huntington's running attack was because I mean
- 45:32Speaker 4: they had almost like a thunder and lightning approach with
- 45:34Speaker 4: Keg and Sacks and Zi Jackson, who was actually the
- 45:37Speaker 4: Carl Lee winner last year. So like it's gonna be
- 45:41Speaker 4: it's gonna be interesting to watching them throughout the season.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Because one and to your point is they're gonna get better,
- 45:48Speaker 2: you know, and if they If they and again I'll
- 45:51Speaker 2: say this, any anybody who can run the football, man,
- 45:59Speaker 2: you got you, you gotta, you got a problem to
- 46:01Speaker 2: deal with. Because it's easy to tackle. Receiver catches the ball,
- 46:05Speaker 2: you tackle him. That that's cool, that's easy to do.
- 46:08Speaker 2: But that dude, that's that's a hard runner. And you
- 46:12Speaker 2: got to see him down after down after down, and
- 46:15Speaker 2: he's getting to the secondary. The secondary guys don't want
- 46:18Speaker 2: to get him. That that can cause some problems and
- 46:23Speaker 2: clock killing the clock possessions just running the football, running
- 46:28Speaker 2: the football, chewing the clock up. I think I think
- 46:34Speaker 2: it's gonna be a tough if Huntington gets even better,
- 46:38Speaker 2: if they continually get better in the running game, and
- 46:43Speaker 2: and and to whatever degree they want to throw the ball. Man,
- 46:47Speaker 2: I think I think they're gonna be tough.
- 46:48Speaker 4: They got athletes, all are black Eagles.
- 46:52Speaker 2: They scored.
- 46:53Speaker 4: Hey, look we we lost, but we scored nineteen points.
- 46:56Speaker 4: So that was the most of scoring the game in
- 46:58Speaker 4: a couple of years. I'd be about that. I scored
- 47:02Speaker 4: nineteen Baby.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I was getting ready, I was getting ready to say
- 47:04Speaker 2: that you know that that amount of points is is
- 47:09Speaker 2: is progress? Progress? Sure?
- 47:11Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 47:12Speaker 2: This is this?
- 47:12Speaker 4: This was a I mean again, it was a loss,
- 47:14Speaker 4: but you know it was positive. We got a kid,
- 47:17Speaker 4: Malcolm Brown. He scored all three of the touchdown. He's
- 47:19Speaker 4: a kid transferred from Virginia. It's from here. He moved
- 47:22Speaker 4: to Virginia to move back home. Uh it got him
- 47:25Speaker 4: a receiver, dB, running back and plays a little bit
- 47:27Speaker 4: of everything. So he he he definitely showed some promise
- 47:30Speaker 4: and uh, it was it was. It was fun to
- 47:32Speaker 4: see the black Eagle was on the board.
- 47:34Speaker 2: If you if you've got that type of guy number one,
- 47:37Speaker 2: you gotta keep him. Yeah, you know, I think he's
- 47:39Speaker 2: the scene. I want to say he's the scene. Okay.
- 47:41Speaker 2: And the thing about it is you've you've got it
- 47:45Speaker 2: focused on him. Yeah, you know, you you got it.
- 47:50Speaker 2: If he's if he can be a receiver, you got
- 47:52Speaker 2: to get him the ball in space. If he's a
- 47:54Speaker 2: running back, you gotta get him on the edge. You
- 47:56Speaker 2: gotta get him some draws and screens, you gotta you
- 47:58Speaker 2: gotta give him opportunity where he can actually use his talent.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Because and I think that's what they tried to do.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Like I said, they had him playing a running back,
- 48:07Speaker 4: they had him playing a receiver. I think when you
- 48:09Speaker 4: work with a team like that, who's you know, South
- 48:11Speaker 4: Charles and is rebuilding that if you have a guy
- 48:14Speaker 4: who who can make some things happen, you got to
- 48:17Speaker 4: move him all over, you know, because you don't want
- 48:19Speaker 4: him to get a double team and people can focus
- 48:22Speaker 4: on him. Like I said, he even took an interception
- 48:23Speaker 4: to the house. So it was good to see.
- 48:25Speaker 2: And it's interesting too because you know, and I'm curious
- 48:28Speaker 2: about what your response to this is. You know, in
- 48:30Speaker 2: today's game, you know, people look at that type of
- 48:33Speaker 2: an athlete all over the field playing different positions. They're like, man,
- 48:38Speaker 2: they're playing him too many positions. They need to you know,
- 48:41Speaker 2: he needs to be you know, he needs to go
- 48:43Speaker 2: somewhere else where he can just be this. I'm going
- 48:46Speaker 2: to make the case that, man, if you have that
- 48:49Speaker 2: kind of skill set and you're being able to go
- 48:52Speaker 2: all over the field, playing different positions and playing them
- 48:56Speaker 2: at a high level, what's that scout looking at. Yeah,
- 48:59Speaker 2: I'm to me, I'm like, I'm loving that because scouts,
- 49:05Speaker 2: you're going to see him in all kinds of different
- 49:07Speaker 2: situations compared to one position which he might not physically fit. Yeah,
- 49:14Speaker 2: one just because of size. I mean I would, I
- 49:17Speaker 2: would kind of agree and disagree.
- 49:19Speaker 4: I think that again, when you have an athlete like that,
- 49:23Speaker 4: you're going to naturally move him around because you don't
- 49:25Speaker 4: want to get targeted, double team, different things in that nature.
- 49:28Speaker 4: And then when you working on a you know, on
- 49:31Speaker 4: a team like South charlest and who is rebuilding, you're
- 49:34Speaker 4: gonna have to because you got to find creative ways
- 49:36Speaker 4: to get in the ball. Far as scouting in college recruiting,
- 49:39Speaker 4: I think that again, depending on the type of athlete
- 49:43Speaker 4: that you are, you may find some benefit to just
- 49:45Speaker 4: being stable and playing at one position because they can
- 49:48Speaker 4: kind of assess where you know, where you're good, where
- 49:50Speaker 4: you're bad, deficiency and everything like that. Although it could
- 49:54Speaker 4: be beneficial because now they could sort of see where
- 49:57Speaker 4: they could pitch you, but again that may open up
- 50:01Speaker 4: situations once you go to the next level where you
- 50:03Speaker 4: may not be right for that particular system and different
- 50:06Speaker 4: things of that nature. So it's one of those things
- 50:09Speaker 4: that again depending on where you at, depending on where
- 50:13Speaker 4: the program's at, you got to use guys how you
- 50:15Speaker 4: can use them, and you got to figure out a
- 50:16Speaker 4: way to win.
- 50:17Speaker 2: And I think I think that's the most important. I
- 50:20Speaker 2: think that's the most important thing. But hats off to
- 50:25Speaker 2: him simply because he he's you. Sometimes you have to
- 50:33Speaker 2: know that you're you're making an impact there. Yeah, you know,
- 50:37Speaker 2: just in that first game, he already knows that that
- 50:40Speaker 2: he's he's the lead horse there.
- 50:43Speaker 4: And I hope we can keep it up because, like
- 50:44Speaker 4: I said, I think that from watching the game, watching
- 50:47Speaker 4: the amount of game that I watched, I think that,
- 50:49Speaker 4: you know, we South Cheulest can win some games this year.
- 50:52Speaker 2: So is there is there anybody you know that you
- 50:57Speaker 2: could say looked okay in week one but could be
- 51:03Speaker 2: somewhere else by week five.
- 51:05Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's hard to say. Like I said,
- 51:08Speaker 4: I mean, you look at the team, like Martin's Bird
- 51:10Speaker 4: they beat a DC team sixty six and none. Again,
- 51:12Speaker 4: we don't know how good the DC team is. Hurricane
- 51:15Speaker 4: South Chele excuse me, Hurricane and the Huntington they both
- 51:17Speaker 4: look good to me. So I could see them both,
- 51:20Speaker 4: you know, going deep playoff runs. GW look solid again.
- 51:26Speaker 4: South Charleston Ripley. Okay, we'll see what they have. So
- 51:28Speaker 4: it's kind of hard to tell. Nitro look great, but
- 51:31Speaker 4: you know it's gonna be hard to tell.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Well, I you know, one of one of the interesting
- 51:39Speaker 2: components for me is as as you go down, as
- 51:43Speaker 2: you go down to week two, week six, week seven,
- 51:50Speaker 2: there's always gonna be somebody's name is gonna jump out
- 51:55Speaker 2: there that nobody knew that the expectation was not not
- 52:01Speaker 2: I don't know if I want to say not there,
- 52:03Speaker 2: but just maybe unexpected of how good that particular player is.
- 52:08Speaker 2: And I think that's one of the special things about
- 52:13Speaker 2: football and the development of it and the advancement of it.
- 52:19Speaker 2: And and I'll give We've got we've got a little
- 52:23Speaker 2: kid that's that's on you football that a couple of
- 52:29Speaker 2: years a couple of years ago. I mean, he would
- 52:32Speaker 2: he would literally, you know, just sit down on the field,
- 52:36Speaker 2: wouldn't do anything. We call him Bear, and I've probably
- 52:41Speaker 2: given him a shout out before, but you should. You
- 52:45Speaker 2: would if you came to if you came and watch
- 52:47Speaker 2: one of our practices or want to go come to
- 52:50Speaker 2: one of the games, and you'd see this little kid
- 52:57Speaker 2: three foot fours, you know, I mean, a little kid
- 53:02Speaker 2: and bro like he is legitimately tackling, running like he
- 53:06Speaker 2: broke a he broke a big run last week and
- 53:12Speaker 2: it's like just his just in a couple of years,
- 53:16Speaker 2: just him, his whole football mindset changed. And I use
- 53:24Speaker 2: that as an example because man, when you start to
- 53:26Speaker 2: talk about that guy from tenth eleven gets the twelve
- 53:34Speaker 2: you know, or that that ninth grade, tenth grader that
- 53:40Speaker 2: nobody's really thinking about, and all of a sudden we
- 53:42Speaker 2: get in the week five, somebody goes down, he goes
- 53:45Speaker 2: in and all of a sudden, how many times have
- 53:49Speaker 2: you said, why wouldn't he playing in the beginning? You
- 53:51Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, because you didn't see it.
- 53:55Speaker 4: And I think that becomes even harder to assess when
- 53:57Speaker 4: we talk about the transfer and the movement of players. Yes,
- 54:00Speaker 4: because it may take you a while to jail. That's
- 54:03Speaker 4: all I was saying that like the kick and sas
- 54:04Speaker 4: kid from Huntington, he was a GW kid and he
- 54:07Speaker 4: almost had a media impact first game at the like
- 54:10Speaker 4: the power running back position. So like I said, it's
- 54:13Speaker 4: it's definitely going to be interesting to see. I think
- 54:15Speaker 4: by probably week three, week four, who who's who's starting
- 54:20Speaker 4: to peak out?
- 54:21Speaker 2: What would what would mean you as an athlete and
- 54:26Speaker 2: you're at you're at g Yeah, what's going to make
- 54:31Speaker 2: you trans.
- 54:32Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know. I think I mean, maybe
- 54:35Speaker 4: if there's a coaching change. Maybe if we're going to
- 54:37Speaker 4: your team, coaching change. Yeah, Like if I'm at GW
- 54:40Speaker 4: and there was some like coaching change, and it doesn't
- 54:42Speaker 4: necessarily have to be the head coach, maybe have a
- 54:44Speaker 4: new offense or defensive coordinators coming in with a different philosophy.
- 54:49Speaker 4: It may be, you know, I want to win a championship.
- 54:52Speaker 4: I don't think I can maybe win it there. Or
- 54:55Speaker 4: maybe it's a situation in which I just want to
- 54:57Speaker 4: play with the best athletes in the area to see
- 54:59Speaker 4: where I'm at, you know. So it could be a
- 55:01Speaker 4: variety of things that would that you know, at a
- 55:04Speaker 4: high school level that you maybe want to transfer.
- 55:07Speaker 2: See, because I haven't really I haven't really found I
- 55:10Speaker 2: haven't really found one that that sticks for me.
- 55:13Speaker 4: I mean, I think because to me, it's the nature
- 55:16Speaker 4: of the position that you played too. I mean, it
- 55:20Speaker 4: wasn't Again, if you're playing safety a corner, you want
- 55:23Speaker 4: to have good linebackers in a good d line. It's
- 55:25Speaker 4: going to help you far as getting pressure on a quarterback.
- 55:27Speaker 4: You don't have to make all the tackles. But at
- 55:29Speaker 4: the end of the day, you still out on the
- 55:31Speaker 4: island by yourself. It's almost like playing like an outfield
- 55:35Speaker 4: position in baseball.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Right, And yeah, and I and I and I and
- 55:38Speaker 2: I still have some impact on how I play that
- 55:43Speaker 2: position in spite of in spite of everybody and in
- 55:46Speaker 2: spite of everybody else. And I thought, and I think,
- 55:48Speaker 2: once you move closer, it becomes like, man, I gotta
- 55:52Speaker 2: even even like a receiver on the offensive side, his
- 55:55Speaker 2: whole stat book, everything that he's going to accomplish is
- 55:58Speaker 2: is predicated on that court it back and that offensive line,
- 56:02Speaker 2: and then some degree to that running back. So but
- 56:04Speaker 2: I think playing a defensive back position, it's just kind
- 56:06Speaker 2: of a different world. It's a different mindset. I guess.
- 56:11Speaker 2: I guess because like I said, man, like I was
- 56:15Speaker 2: at Marshall when we weren't like there was never a
- 56:17Speaker 2: season when we were thinking that we were maybe we
- 56:19Speaker 2: were hoping maybe to get the five hundred my last season.
- 56:22Speaker 2: But but I got a great example.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Kid went to Capitol he played, he played defensive back
- 56:30Speaker 4: his junior year, they go five to five. He makes
- 56:32Speaker 4: All State. Why because he's got a he's on every
- 56:36Speaker 4: tackle he making. He got a hundred tackles that year
- 56:38Speaker 4: at the d back position. The next year they win
- 56:40Speaker 4: a championship. He literally gets no accolades because he had
- 56:43Speaker 4: to do nothing because the defensive line and the linebackers
- 56:46Speaker 4: was so stacked. Ain't nothing coming his way. So it's
- 56:49Speaker 4: a little different mindset for you. I made a bunch
- 56:52Speaker 4: of tackles I made.
- 56:53Speaker 2: I was a safety that Marshall made tackles led the
- 56:57Speaker 2: team three to four years, and that ain't supposed to
- 57:00Speaker 2: I ain't supposed to have, you know, and and you know,
- 57:04Speaker 2: so that does draw some attention, and I get the
- 57:07Speaker 2: benefit of saying though I was never looked at as
- 57:10Speaker 2: a safety, as a pro as a pro athlete, as
- 57:13Speaker 2: a potential pro athlete, I was always looked at as
- 57:16Speaker 2: a corner. That was kind of when the new the
- 57:19Speaker 2: new size and length and stuff of corners. But I'm
- 57:22Speaker 2: gonna get one more shout out here to our sponsor,
- 57:26Speaker 2: Let's Talk with carly A sponsored by Frank Walker Law.

- 57:37Speaker 2: gonna close. I'm gonna close with this and I don't
- 57:40Speaker 2: I'll give you a chance maybe even to say anything.
- 57:43Speaker 2: I I see, I see a Hurricane Huntington game somewhere
- 57:52Speaker 2: down the line. I don't I don't know if it's
- 57:56Speaker 2: even possible that it could be in the championship. If
- 58:00Speaker 2: it could be, but I feel like I don't know
- 58:02Speaker 2: if it's a playoff game, I don't know, championship game.
- 58:05Speaker 2: But I if I see that game again, I'm not
- 58:09Speaker 2: sure that it stays that way. I don't know. I
- 58:13Speaker 2: don't think it's gonna be I wouldn't. I don't think
- 58:15Speaker 2: it's gonna be that close. And I'm gonna give the
- 58:17Speaker 2: edge to Huntingtons.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Yes, well, I don't know, man, that's one of those
- 58:22Speaker 4: I gotta see it, man, because I think it's just
- 58:25Speaker 4: like I said, just like Honeyson stacked with the athletes,
- 58:27Speaker 4: so it's Hurricane. They got the Largo's kid. They gotta
- 58:30Speaker 4: kid the Villa Tommy. So they got a bunch of
- 58:32Speaker 4: players on that squad that could you know, and that's
- 58:35Speaker 4: only gonna get better.
- 58:36Speaker 2: And Bella me, I hadn't seen him really really play.
- 58:41Speaker 2: He's about that. He can. He can. He's really good,
- 58:46Speaker 2: really play. Man.
- 58:47Speaker 4: Like I said, I'm maybe I'm biased, but I think
- 58:50Speaker 4: I don't know. I see quarterback at the next level,
- 58:52Speaker 4: but that's just me. I don't know he can run
- 58:54Speaker 4: the ball as well, you know. But that's what you
- 58:55Speaker 4: said we needed true true. All Right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 58:58Speaker 4: we appreciate you check in with us, and we will
