- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, the News Radio 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief
- 0:05Speaker 1: Husker Buzz Edition. Jim Rose out for a few days.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm Scott Voorhees welcoming Sean Callahan back to Big Red Radio. Sean,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we talked yesterday and I said I want to talk
- 0:14Speaker 1: to you tomorrow. And tomorrow is now today. Or did
- 0:16Speaker 1: I just blow your mind about recruiting? It wasn't a
- 0:21Speaker 1: huge recruiting weekend in the bye week. Obviously, the Husker
- 0:25Speaker 1: coach is still working on recruiting. their current team ahead
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the Washington game, but they did get out and
- 0:30Speaker 1: do a few things this past weekend. What happened?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, they spent the better part of the week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 0:37Speaker 2: on the road, including head coach Matt Rule. And Ahmaud
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hudson was still the biggest storyline, in my opinion. The
- 0:44Speaker 2: five-star tight end out of Ruston, Louisiana, Matt Rule went
- 0:47Speaker 2: out there and visited him. He's committed to LSU, but
- 0:51Speaker 2: Nebraska continues to make a push on him this weekend,
- 0:56Speaker 2: or this season, hoping to flip him. He visited Lincoln
- 0:59Speaker 2: a couple weeks back for the Maryland game on his
- 1:02Speaker 2: own dime, and they hope that that's going to continue
- 1:05Speaker 2: to push here, and they have a chance to flip him. Now,
- 1:09Speaker 2: this weekend is huge. This will probably be their best
- 1:12Speaker 2: recruiting weekend. They're going to have several of the commits
- 1:14Speaker 2: in town that are already in the class, but then
- 1:18Speaker 2: in the class of 2028, you're going to have some
- 1:20Speaker 2: other big-name targets that make their way into Lincoln. So
- 1:26Speaker 2: you'll have a good majority, eight commits at least, if
- 1:29Speaker 2: not more than that, maybe 10 to 12 of their
- 1:31Speaker 2: actual recruited commits will be here. But then your 20-28s,
- 1:36Speaker 2: the younger guys that are juniors in high school, that
- 1:38Speaker 2: will be kind of your last opportunity to get a
- 1:40Speaker 2: lot of these kids here almost until the spring when
- 1:44Speaker 2: the recruiting process really kind of resets itself.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Now, in terms of who will be throwing to that
- 1:50Speaker 1: next tight end, the next Luke Lindenmeier, or if you
- 1:53Speaker 1: want to go back to Johnny Mitchell, Trey Taylor and
- 1:56Speaker 1: Miller South finally lost a game. Westside beat them. How
- 2:01Speaker 1: did Trey play? And for those who have only seen
- 2:05Speaker 1: Miller South steamroll everybody, how did the Patriots end up
- 2:09Speaker 1: losing this one?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a 17-17 game. I want to say
- 2:12Speaker 2: it was late third quarter at that point. And Miller
- 2:16Speaker 2: South was actually driving to take a lead. And Trey
- 2:21Speaker 2: Taylor threw a pick. Micah Benning, actually the son of
- 2:23Speaker 2: Caleb Benning, or the son of David Benning, came up
- 2:27Speaker 2: with the interception. And that play kind of really turned
- 2:30Speaker 2: the tide. And Westside went on a scoring run to win.
- 2:35Speaker 2: and get the victory and lock up that number one seed.
- 2:41Speaker 2: If you are following the high school football season casually,
- 2:44Speaker 2: the one seed is in a pretty good position because
- 2:46Speaker 2: you avoid Millard South, you avoid Millard North, who are
- 2:50Speaker 2: probably the second and third best teams all the way
- 2:52Speaker 2: until now, the championship, and you have Bennington as the
- 2:55Speaker 2: four and Millard North. B. Bennington, I believe it was
- 2:59Speaker 2: 42 or 35-0 this weekend. So a pretty good path
- 3:03Speaker 2: now for Westside to get back to Memorial Stadium, where
- 3:07Speaker 2: they haven't been in a couple of years. And Millard
- 3:10Speaker 2: South's going to have to go through some pretty good
- 3:11Speaker 2: teams to get there and play in that championship game.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But it was one of the better high school football
- 3:18Speaker 2: games you'll see. Eli Drinkowitz, the Missouri head coach, was
- 3:21Speaker 2: seen on the sidelines today. watching you know his quarterback
- 3:25Speaker 2: commit Braylon Warren earlier in the week Matt Campbell the
- 3:28Speaker 2: Iowa State or not Iowa's Penn State head coach was
- 3:31Speaker 2: in Omaha he offered Braylon Warren so Warren is definitely
- 3:37Speaker 2: still being recruited by others but committed to Missouri and
- 3:40Speaker 2: you know Drinkowitz was in Omaha for that game in
- 3:43Speaker 2: person to watch him on the.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Sidelines regarding this year's team at Memorial Stadium Saturday night
- 3:49Speaker 1: here we have any running backs left to play in
- 3:51Speaker 1: this game You know.
- 3:53Speaker 2: The bye week did come at a good time. Jamal
- 3:55Speaker 2: Rule should get healthy and be ready to go. Mekhi
- 3:59Speaker 2: Nelson had been playing on a bad ankle, too, and
- 4:02Speaker 2: I think the bye week helps him in that cause
- 4:05Speaker 2: moving forward. Isaiah Mosey, I thought it looked worse or
- 4:09Speaker 2: sounded worse. It sounds like he could be back this week.
- 4:11Speaker 2: We'll get that first Big Ten injury report on Wednesday.
- 4:16Speaker 2: kind of what the outlook is for those running back spots.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Vince Genitone, though, out for the season with a torn
- 4:23Speaker 2: pectoral muscle, which is going to take him out for
- 4:26Speaker 2: about four months.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That's tough to hear. Man, he was a great story
- 4:31Speaker 1: in this year's Husker team thus far.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was probably going to play, especially with
- 4:37Speaker 2: what's going on now. He was in a position to
- 4:40Speaker 2: Maybe up the carry number to four or five carries
- 4:42Speaker 2: in a game and just contribute in even a bigger
- 4:45Speaker 2: role than he had been. So yeah, you hate to
- 4:47Speaker 2: see a guy like that. He could be done. I
- 4:50Speaker 2: think there's an outside chance he could get another year
- 4:52Speaker 2: of eligibility back because he did not play at all
- 4:55Speaker 2: his first season at Montana. No four-game registry. He completely
- 5:00Speaker 2: sat out that first year there. There's an outside shot
- 5:03Speaker 2: he could apply to get a year back, but it
- 5:06Speaker 2: could be done for Vince, or we'll see him one
- 5:09Speaker 2: more year.
- 5:09Speaker 1: All right, Sean, great reporting. As always, we'll talk again tomorrow.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Thanks, Scott.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Here on Big Red Radio, that is our Husker insider,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Sean Callahan.
