- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Alex.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'm the guitar one of the guitarists of Necro Goblicon.
- 0:04Speaker 2: We'll be touring with Alestorm in Australia at the end
- 0:08Speaker 2: of February through the beginning of March.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Yatifer Mike, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Thanks for having me.
- 0:15Speaker 3: My pleasure science you say.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Necro goblic On tour Australia for the first time ever
- 0:20Speaker 4: next to year, supporting Olstorm Burana shows starting on February
- 0:23Speaker 4: twenty fifth in Freemantle, then going to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney
- 0:26Speaker 4: and finishing.
- 0:27Speaker 3: In Brisbane on March of all.
- 0:28Speaker 4: So the first point of order, I guess made his
- 0:31Speaker 4: wife you need to neglected us for so long.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's not on purpose.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I promise that we you know, we've been talking about
- 0:38Speaker 2: it forever is and you know, it's been something that
- 0:40Speaker 2: we've tried to make happen. We there were there's been
- 0:45Speaker 2: a few times, there were tentative plans and then some
- 0:47Speaker 2: kind of logistical nightmare occurd or something you know it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You know, so luckily this time we finally our team
- 0:55Speaker 2: was persistent this time like we have to get you
- 0:57Speaker 2: guys out there, and so they were touch with the
- 1:00Speaker 2: promoter in Australia and promoter already had Ailstorm coming in
- 1:05Speaker 2: and it was like, you guys want to play with
- 1:06Speaker 2: Ulso we're like, yes, that's perfect. We played with those
- 1:08Speaker 2: guys before, we know those shows go well, and yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's a perfect way for us to do Australia for
- 1:14Speaker 2: the first time is with another kind of a fun,
- 1:16Speaker 2: like minded band.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So yeah, very excited.
- 1:19Speaker 2: But we already like I already I already feel like
- 1:23Speaker 2: we'll be coming back more often after this.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I think we have to kind.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Of come and show promoters that that people in Australia
- 1:29Speaker 2: really want to.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Come see some goblin metal hell he is I.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Mean, first time in a new country with something like
- 1:36Speaker 4: this might like do you do your research and what
- 1:38Speaker 4: do you expect?
- 1:38Speaker 3: You talk to other bands? Did it been here? Or
- 1:40Speaker 3: do you'd rather come in cold and just see what happens.
- 1:43Speaker 2: A little bit of Colin I a little call and
- 1:45Speaker 2: me I feel like I sometimes, yeah, look look at
- 1:47Speaker 2: online at stuff that's you know, in if it's a
- 1:49Speaker 2: country I've never been to, kind of look at you.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Know, what stuff is around.
- 1:53Speaker 2: But then I kind of sop myself and then just
- 1:56Speaker 2: you know, partially due to add and partially do partially
- 2:02Speaker 2: due to I do kind of like just jumping into
- 2:03Speaker 2: something fresh. At the same time, I do kind of
- 2:05Speaker 2: like I like not being prepared to a certain extent
- 2:09Speaker 2: when it comes to kind of experiencing things for the
- 2:11Speaker 2: first time. I like to kind of just just let
- 2:15Speaker 2: it happen, you know, see, you know, be surprised.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Yeah, what about from Australian fans and Australian crowns. Do
- 2:21Speaker 4: you coping with any expectations?
- 2:24Speaker 1: So our drummers played.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Our drummer Eric also has an act called it was
- 2:28Speaker 2: a one man act called Rainbow Dragonize and that he
- 2:31Speaker 2: toured with Ailstorm in Australia before and he he has
- 2:36Speaker 2: us hyped on it.
- 2:37Speaker 1: He's he's mentioned that you know, the crowds.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Are energetic and fun and and it's every show is
- 2:44Speaker 2: a party, is how he described it, and that's I'm
- 2:47Speaker 2: very excited for that as someone who's never been to
- 2:49Speaker 2: the country before myself.
- 2:51Speaker 1: We're excited to play. The shows had a couple of
- 2:54Speaker 1: other interviews mentioned.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Interviewers mentioned we should check out the beaches and the wildlife,
- 2:59Speaker 2: so if there's any time to in between shows to
- 3:02Speaker 2: go check that out. We definitely want to make that
- 3:03Speaker 2: a priority.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Straight And I'm on the flip side of that, bro, Like,
- 3:08Speaker 4: we got no idea what do we expect from you either?
- 3:10Speaker 3: So what do we expect from a necro goblet on
- 3:13Speaker 3: live show?
- 3:14Speaker 4: Uh?
- 3:15Speaker 1: One, there will be a goblin there? Yeah?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Cool stop it's uh you know.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Uh I think you know.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Dicky, our vocalists mentioned he when people he said when
- 3:28Speaker 2: people asked him when he joined the band, like what
- 3:30Speaker 2: what what is neck? What's what's the neckro goblicon show?
- 3:32Speaker 2: Like he said, it's like death metal, but it's a party.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And then I felt like that was a really good
- 3:39Speaker 2: that was a really.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Good uh sum up of it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You know, it's where it's it's high energy, has all
- 3:46Speaker 2: the things you want from metal. It's got you know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: it's got the blast beats, got the rolling double kicks,
- 3:50Speaker 2: got shredding, got screaming.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But we we we make everything fun.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It's like it's we we equally make it like a
- 3:58Speaker 2: dance party and it's you know, we a lot of
- 4:00Speaker 2: crowd participation, a lot of just yeah like uh yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 2: it's it's half party, half metal band.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Essentially.
- 4:08Speaker 4: That sounds good to you know, you sort of mention
- 4:10Speaker 4: this before, but like I was still mind known as
- 4:12Speaker 4: a bit of a party band and you guys known
- 4:15Speaker 4: as a good time band.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So how important is it to get that right on tour?
- 4:19Speaker 4: You know, like you don't want a too serious band
- 4:21Speaker 4: going on with the party band, I guess, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 4: like you gotta that that dynamics off stage and on
- 4:25Speaker 4: stage has got to coexist on it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Ideally, when you can pair up fun bands together, it's
- 4:32Speaker 2: always great because then it's just one big fund show.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But I you know, I've also because there's not as
- 4:36Speaker 2: many fun bands of serious bands. We've done most of
- 4:38Speaker 2: our touring with serious bands, and it still goes over
- 4:41Speaker 2: great because you know, we're we're still that like bit
- 4:44Speaker 2: of a refreshment in the middle of the show, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: when we were when we were coming up and opening
- 4:48Speaker 2: a lot of shows or being in the middle of
- 4:50Speaker 2: packages and stuff.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You know, we're kind of we're this little like all right,
- 4:54Speaker 1: it's getting really serious and metal.
- 4:55Speaker 2: And then and then there's the fun band and then
- 4:57Speaker 2: back to the you know, it kind of sparses the
- 4:59Speaker 2: evening up a lit little bit.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:04Speaker 2: A necro goblicn live show is uh you know, it's
- 5:08Speaker 2: it's it's it's a it's a it's one part metal
- 5:12Speaker 2: show on one part fucking party.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Is is the show?
- 5:17Speaker 2: It's you know, we're we're we're doing everything a metal
- 5:20Speaker 2: band does. We're playing our parts, we're actually playing him
- 5:24Speaker 2: and uh uh are and but and along with that,
- 5:28Speaker 2: we have our our bodacious front man John goble con
- 5:33Speaker 2: uh you know uh now on the mic, along with
- 5:37Speaker 2: Dicky Allen leading a whole a goblin party throughout the
- 5:41Speaker 2: entire show, you know, And that's and that's it's it's
- 5:45Speaker 2: it's equal parts both you know where you know we're
- 5:49Speaker 2: just as much as we want you to mosh, we
- 5:51Speaker 2: also want you to dance. And you know, it's it's
- 5:54Speaker 2: we have every part of a metal show still part
- 5:56Speaker 2: of it, but every part of it is just a
- 5:59Speaker 2: wild celebration of being fucking weirdos is is how I
- 6:04Speaker 2: how would.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I call it.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Through?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Then?
- 6:08Speaker 4: And as I suggest, goblins do probably a large part
- 6:11Speaker 4: in the show.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Run us run us through that.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I mean a lot of people that are not familiar
- 6:14Speaker 4: with the music might just see the film clips and
- 6:17Speaker 4: the goblins here and there, but it's actually a massive
- 6:19Speaker 4: part of.
- 6:19Speaker 3: What you do.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's you know, and it's it's all you know.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And this all stemmed, you know, from back in two
- 6:25Speaker 2: thousand and six, just starting a band with the pure
- 6:30Speaker 2: attention like how funny would be to make a band
- 6:32Speaker 2: that's only about goblins, right, And then it was no
- 6:35Speaker 2: one had any idea that there was no attempt at
- 6:39Speaker 2: least at the time.
- 6:40Speaker 1: In that, you know, to make this a career or
- 6:43Speaker 1: anything like that. It was just it was made.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And again it was like the idea that the funny idea,
- 6:49Speaker 2: Like we wanted to to have fun doing it, but
- 6:52Speaker 2: we never lost seriousness as musicians, you know, we always like, well, no,
- 6:56Speaker 2: we want this to be like really good, and we
- 6:57Speaker 2: wanted to be fun and weird, but like we want
- 7:00Speaker 2: to like we're gonna put a like the straight faced
- 7:04Speaker 2: effort into this as any serious metal band would you.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Know, they're they're they're putting the same amount hours. We're
- 7:10Speaker 1: not like a.
- 7:12Speaker 2: We didn't service the funny part of it harder than
- 7:16Speaker 2: we serviced the musician side of it, and and that
- 7:19Speaker 2: was really important to us in the beginning. And uh,
- 7:22Speaker 2: and then fast forward to two thousand and twelve and
- 7:27Speaker 2: we're we've moved to La and we, uh, we played
- 7:32Speaker 2: a show and we're still not a big band. We
- 7:34Speaker 2: had a little bit of MySpace Buzz played a show,
- 7:37Speaker 2: you know, and my coworker came and he brought his
- 7:39Speaker 2: friend named Brandon Dermer, who was at that time just
- 7:43Speaker 2: just started up and coming director who saw the show
- 7:46Speaker 2: and there's maybe like ten people there and he like
- 7:48Speaker 2: came up to me afterwards and we're like, this is
- 7:50Speaker 2: the fucking greatest thing I've ever seen.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I don't see how this is not packed.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I love that you guys are just normal guys and
- 7:57Speaker 2: just like having fun and like, I have to do
- 7:59Speaker 2: some kind of video you And that's when John Goblecon
- 8:03Speaker 2: was born, a specific character that's played by Davis Spoley.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And so that you know, like we've made that video.
- 8:13Speaker 2: We pulled every favor we could to make this video happen,
- 8:16Speaker 2: like every single we've used our own money. Was like, oh,
- 8:19Speaker 2: got really scrappy with it, and everyone who was on
- 8:22Speaker 2: board believed in it. And that video, you know, it
- 8:25Speaker 2: depicts a day in the life goblin, not a goblin
- 8:29Speaker 2: in a fantastical world, but he's just a goblin who's
- 8:33Speaker 2: just another guy with a job who smokes weed and
- 8:36Speaker 2: drinks a little too much and hates his job and
- 8:40Speaker 2: is nervous at work, doesn't feel like he fits in
- 8:42Speaker 2: with anyone else there, has a little crush on a girl.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And but he's this goblin and that's he's seeing the
- 8:47Speaker 1: world through these eyes.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And that video took off and suddenly we're like, this
- 8:50Speaker 2: is this is what we're about.
- 8:52Speaker 1: We're about this.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Both that feeling that that being being an outcast character,
- 8:58Speaker 2: being weird, a goblin having humor to it, but having
- 9:01Speaker 2: but having this not just fantastical element, but like it's
- 9:05Speaker 2: a goblin living in our world. It's a it's he's
- 9:08Speaker 2: he's outside of what makes him comfortable. He's like he's
- 9:11Speaker 2: had to create places that make him comfortable, like like
- 9:14Speaker 2: the now a podcast we have and now we have
- 9:17Speaker 2: like and he's seen he's this goblin has seen success
- 9:19Speaker 2: from this video and is now has a bit of
- 9:22Speaker 2: an ego and it's stoked to be a singer. But
- 9:24Speaker 2: it's it's really it's on top of being about goblins,
- 9:27Speaker 2: it's become about this goblin specifically in his view of
- 9:30Speaker 2: of reality. And we're and the band hit through the band,
- 9:34Speaker 2: we express that music through the podcast and through film
- 9:39Speaker 2: and whatnot. We expressed that through video, but it's all
- 9:42Speaker 2: it all comes back to that that one that character.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Very good, but now it's now it's a global succession.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Have you sent the feelings out to try and find
- 9:52Speaker 3: a real goblin to come in?
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean we're We've said it.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean we we were Our door is always open
- 9:58Speaker 2: for a real goblin to come in. But you know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: I think you know it's uh uh John Goble Coon
- 10:05Speaker 2: is as far as we know, the only goblin that
- 10:08Speaker 2: exists on Earth, and he's he's dying to find more,
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But your music and it's very tongue in shaking, light hearted,
- 10:19Speaker 4: it's it. It's it's refreshing in the one nights and
- 10:22Speaker 4: music that's, in my opinion, becoming way too sanitarized. You know,
- 10:25Speaker 4: Like have you the years, have you had to adjust
- 10:29Speaker 4: what you do say you don't offend people?
- 10:33Speaker 2: If anything, I think we've only gotten more offensive, like
- 10:37Speaker 2: you know, honestly, like yeah, we've we've all, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and obviously we want to be tasteful, so we never
- 10:43Speaker 2: want to be offensive for the sake of being offensive.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But if something's.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Really really funny, we're and like it's like, yeah, that's
- 10:50Speaker 2: just that's fucking hilarious.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Like we all agree it's funny, Like we're doing it, you.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Know, like people can get offended by anything. We know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: we know we're not full of hate. We're know where
- 11:00Speaker 2: and we don't and we don't really we don't.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we're not.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we're not ever trying to be fringe humor in
- 11:05Speaker 2: any way. We we just we do what makes us laugh,
- 11:08Speaker 2: and that's that's the most important thing, is like we
- 11:10Speaker 2: find this funny. So we're doing it, and it's like
- 11:13Speaker 2: for the shows and we're on tour, like you know,
- 11:15Speaker 2: it's you know, John's out there, he's saying he's saying
- 11:20Speaker 2: what he finds funny at every moment, and and there's
- 11:23Speaker 2: no like official script for the show. You know, we
- 11:26Speaker 2: have some things we say, but like it's a lot
- 11:28Speaker 2: of stuff that we'll see something silly in a city
- 11:31Speaker 2: on our way in and suddenly that that is the
- 11:34Speaker 2: only thing.
- 11:34Speaker 1: We'll talk about.
- 11:35Speaker 2: The whole show is is you know, and we like
- 11:38Speaker 2: to make this show like specific to this. So we're
- 11:40Speaker 2: gonna come out to Australia in just just over a
- 11:43Speaker 2: month and like month and a half and yeah, so.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I'm we're gonna we're we're gonna roast your country for sure.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Consonant sorry check black and.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah no no, see that's we have no interest in
- 12:02Speaker 2: talking politics. That's it's overdone anyways. It's it's not even
- 12:06Speaker 2: something we we care about to talk about. That's like, no, no,
- 12:10Speaker 2: we're we're keeping it, keeping it clean, but keeping it biting,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you know, like, yeah, a lot.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Of people do focus on the live show and the
- 12:20Speaker 4: goblin aspect of it. But musically, like you're blending melody crop,
- 12:25Speaker 4: there's death metal, there's DM in there. Like it's stuff
- 12:27Speaker 4: that really, on paper should not work together. Like how
- 12:32Speaker 4: do you get it all together to make it work?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Uh, you know, it's it's honestly, it's it comes from
- 12:39Speaker 2: us liking all those genres, all these different genres, all
- 12:41Speaker 2: these different genres of metal by itself on top of
- 12:44Speaker 2: the d M and everything else and some pop even
- 12:46Speaker 2: and uh, ultimately at this point it's kind of been established,
- 12:50Speaker 2: but you know it kind of in the beginning, it
- 12:52Speaker 2: was just organic and it was it like it if
- 12:56Speaker 2: it didn't fit, we wouldn't do it.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But it worked. There was a desire to put it
- 12:59Speaker 1: in there.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It's still the songs always have a still a strong
- 13:03Speaker 2: melodic structure. So no matter what genre we're invoking with
- 13:08Speaker 2: the part, we're keeping it within parameters of a song
- 13:12Speaker 2: that like, we don't do random tempo changes. Our key
- 13:15Speaker 2: changes are meticulously crafted, you know.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We we we we we do. We want that.
- 13:21Speaker 2: We want every part going into it to each other
- 13:23Speaker 2: to feel seamless and be like and have it be
- 13:26Speaker 2: like what like wow, why does that work? And we
- 13:29Speaker 2: put a lot of effort into making that work, into
- 13:31Speaker 2: making it, making it so you're not like you're so
- 13:33Speaker 2: bobbing your head, You're not like scratching what are they
- 13:36Speaker 2: doing now?
- 13:36Speaker 1: You know, it's like.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Maybe a little a lot of surprises like whoa what
- 13:41Speaker 2: they do there?
- 13:41Speaker 1: But nothing nothing.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That we we we would not want everything to pass
- 13:46Speaker 2: the head bob tests, you know, like it like it,
- 13:49Speaker 2: you gotta still be rocking with it. If if we're
- 13:51Speaker 2: if we're working on a song, we're listening and then
- 13:53Speaker 2: the head bobbing stops or like we're just kind of
- 13:56Speaker 2: like and then it's like, all right, this one's this
- 13:57Speaker 2: one's not making the cut, you know.
- 13:59Speaker 4: It's that's the Monday in that creating process, like, how
- 14:05Speaker 4: do you decide when you've gone too far in one
- 14:06Speaker 4: direction and not far enough and the other.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Is it just a head bump thing and just watching people's.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Heads, you know, a lot of it's yeah, it's a
- 14:12Speaker 2: lot of it's going with your gut. It's it's that
- 14:14Speaker 2: feels right, I love it, you know, And it's it's
- 14:16Speaker 2: not thinking too hard. The biggest thing we don't want
- 14:19Speaker 2: to think about is like is this metal enough or
- 14:21Speaker 2: is this fitting of some genre enough? You know, that's
- 14:25Speaker 2: that's not even what our fans want from us anyways.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Like they like what we're doing, so we're like, let's
- 14:30Speaker 2: like when we like what we're doing, so let's keep
- 14:32Speaker 2: doing that, you know. And it naturally is evolving, but
- 14:35Speaker 2: it's not really like intentional, it's it's just, you know,
- 14:39Speaker 2: it's what we feel like doing. And we seem to
- 14:41Speaker 2: agree on what, yeah, what what parts are strong and
- 14:44Speaker 2: what parts need work, and then when part needs work,
- 14:47Speaker 2: we get to work on it, and you know, and
- 14:50Speaker 2: and if the song's good enough, then it sees the
- 14:52Speaker 2: light of day, and if it's not, it doesn't, you know,
- 14:54Speaker 2: And that's it.
- 14:55Speaker 1: That's that's the process.
- 14:57Speaker 3: But now what wish slot is that simple?
- 15:01Speaker 2: Oh, honestly, yeah, it's it's I mean, it gets complex sometimes,
- 15:04Speaker 2: but yeah, it it compared to the rest of life. Uh,
- 15:08Speaker 2: just making a weird goblin music is actually pretty simple.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Music.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Might like your last album, The Fundamental Slimes and Humans,
- 15:20Speaker 4: came out in twenty twenty.
