- 0:51Speaker 1: A Hey, y'all. Welcome to this week's show, and today
- 1:03we will start as usual with a couple of questions
- 1:06and answers from radio replies a Catholic classic Catholic work
- 1:12by Father's Rumboing CARDI. But before I do, I want
- 1:18to mention you know, it's Christmas season and my books
- 1:21make great Christmas gifts. Check them out. Everything's available on Amazon.
- 1:26They'll get it to your fast. I've written, I guess
- 1:29sixteen seventeen books. Well, I've written. Okay, let me put
- 1:33this way. I have sixteen books published and two more
- 1:37in the process of being published, so you can't buy
- 1:39those yet, but you could definitely buy my books. I
- 1:42got books on herbal medicine, Catholic topics, cookbooks foraging books.
- 1:47Do keep me in mind. Now let's get into the
- 1:51questions and answers. The questioner asks the priests what is
- 1:58a sacrament? Do they answer? A visible writer ceremony, which
- 2:03signifies and confers grace. Thus baptism is a visual rite.
- 2:08The pouring of water in the forehead signifies the cleansing
- 2:12of the soul by the grace which the action bestows.
- 2:16A person says, I trust in Christ and have no
- 2:19need of sacramental rights. That's super common among Protestants these days.
- 2:24Even most Baptists don't believe in baptism anymore. I don't
- 2:27know what they believe in. Actually, not much. Actually, I mean,
- 2:31having been debating with Baptists very recently, some Baptists and Lutherans,
- 2:37some Methodist predominant in seventy Adventist of course, and Orthodox
- 2:41predominantly Baptists, I can tell you they don't believe in
- 2:45much anymore, the very very denomination founded on baptism. I
- 2:54don't even know what percentage of Baptists are actually baptized anymore.
- 2:58Billy Graham said it wasn't necessary, and they all seem
- 3:01to have followed suit. If you go to Frankly Graham's
- 3:04website today, you will see it teaches specifically that baptism
- 3:09is not necessary for salvation, even though Jesus said you
- 3:13had to be baptized to be saved. I don't know what, Honestly,
- 3:16I don't know what they believe in. Sure, Samaritan's person's
- 3:19great work. I appreciate everything they did in the mountains.
- 3:21That's the hurricane. But the only person, the only entity
- 3:26that doesn't want people to be baptized is the devil.
- 3:29I mean literally, Jesus said you have to be baptized
- 3:32to be saved, and they say you don't. And I
- 3:36cannot make any sense of it whatsoever. I mean, how
- 3:40can someone say they're sole foundation for their doctrine as
- 3:44the Bible and then just absolutely teach the opposite of
- 3:48what Jesus said. I mean, he said, you have to
- 3:51be washed in water, in the blood, and you have
- 3:53to eat my flesh to have life within you, the
- 3:57divine life, the eternal life of God. They deny bad baptism,
- 4:00they deny the Eucharists, they have no confirmation, they deny
- 4:07the role of priest and reconciliation, they deny everything that
- 4:11Jesus taught. And I mean it's bizarre. It's incomprehensible, it
- 4:19really is. And honestly, I don't know where to put that.
- 4:23I mean, someone says, I'm a Christian, I believe in
- 4:24Jesus Christ, I believe in the Bible. When I say
- 4:26where the Bible says you have to be baptized, and
- 4:28they say, I don't believe that, Okay, but you believe
- 4:33in Jesus. Jesus is God, right, Yes, I believe in
- 4:36Jesus is God. Well, Jesus said, you have to be baptized.
- 4:39I don't believe that. Where do you? How? How? I mean,
- 4:44it's incomprehensible, But that's what it is. So anyway, in
- 4:51person said I trust in Christ and have no need
- 4:53of sacramental rits. And they answer the priest answer him,
- 4:57it is presumption to trust in Christ. Yet to who
- 5:00despise the means established by Him and declared by Him
- 5:03to be necessary. The Christ in whom you trust certainly
- 5:07believed in such ceremonies. He annoyed the blind man's eyes
- 5:11with saliva and earth. He instituted the various sacraments of
- 5:15the Church. If you study scripture closely, you will notice
- 5:18that the visible is again and again employed in the
- 5:22work of invisible sanctification. Your denial of sacramento and visible
- 5:26rights as opposed to the whole tenor of scripture almost
- 5:30from beginning to end. Yes, they said it better than
- 5:33I could. Person says who made the sacraments? And the answer,
- 5:36since there is no proportion between the visible action, the
- 5:40giving of interior grace, and supernatural character, is evident that
- 5:43God alone could institute a sacrament. It calls for his
- 5:47infinite power, Jesus. Therefore, at once God and Man institute
- 5:51the sacraments. The person asks, why have you seven sacraments?
- 5:55It's Christ to non institute seven. They answer, there are
- 5:58seven sacraments, sykesly because Christ did institute seven. Had he
- 6:03not done so, there would not be seven. The Catholic
- 6:06Church emphatically denies that she has the power to institute
- 6:10a sacrament. Far from instituting sacraments, she has never claimed
- 6:14the power to do so. From the very beginning, Christians
- 6:17have always had seven, receiving them from the apostles who
- 6:20received them from Christ. Protestants were deprived of several of
- 6:23these sacraments at the beginning. At the time of the Reformation.
- 6:27In the Church of England, however, many are returning to
- 6:29the Doctor of seven sacraments as instituted by Christ through
- 6:33of course, their return to the doctrine cannot make sense. Though,
- 6:38of course their return to the doctrine cannot make sense.
- 6:42Let's try it one more time. Though, of course, their
- 6:45return to the doctrine could not make the sacraments valid
- 6:48for them. I was seeing into the line as I
- 6:50was reading. I am dyslexic by the way, And of course,
- 6:54now this was written in the nineteen twenties or thirties.
- 6:59There was a great almost revival in the Anglican Episcopal
- 7:04Church at that time, and it did for a brief
- 7:08period of time code more into the line of Catholic thinking.
- 7:12By the nineteen sixties and seventies, the Anglican Episcopal churches
- 7:17they say, it's one church whatever. The Anglican Church is
- 7:19a church of England. The Episcopal Church is the Church
- 7:22of England. Outside of England. Began to deny every Christian teaching.
- 7:29I mean they now have gay and lesbian vicars. The
- 7:34Bishop of Canterbury is a woman. I don't know what
- 7:37her orientation is. They deny the sacrament of marriage because
- 7:44they accept divorce as their foundational principle. And basically their
- 7:50churches are empty. The Anglican Episcopal denomination will probably cease
- 7:54to exist within my lifetime. I mean it has lost
- 7:58especially in the United States. I said last week, over
- 8:01seventy percent of Congress since the nineteen seventies. The Anglican
- 8:08Episcopal Church was once the church that all the founding followers,
- 8:12except for Charles Carroll and Benjamin Franklin basically went to Well.
- 8:17Jefferson was more of a Unitarian, but anyway, it was
- 8:23the most powerful church in the United States. The President's
- 8:26Church is still an Anglican Episcopal Church America was essentially
- 8:32founded by Anglicans. Within my lifetime, the once many multi
- 8:42tens of millions of member strong Anglican Episcopal Church will
- 8:48probably if it still exists, be more like the Quakers
- 8:52or Mennonites. You will rarely see one, you'll rarely meet one.
- 8:58There'll probably be a few little congregations here and there,
- 9:02but they abandoned the faith. They started out on the
- 9:05wrong foot. But by nineteen seventy the Anglican and Episcopal
- 9:10denomination had ceased to be Christian at all. I mean,
- 9:15there are ministers we'll call them vicars in the Anglican
- 9:21Church in England that think they're Catholic. When I encounter one,
- 9:25I have to explain to them, you're not Catholic. You
- 9:28cannot receive the Eucharist in a Catholic church. They get
- 9:30offended and I'm like, what do you believe about the Euchrist?
- 9:33Do you think it's the true body and blood of Christ? Well?
- 9:36Not really, Okay, there you have it. Even if you
- 9:38were a Catholic, you couldn't receive the Eucharist. You're not
- 9:41part of us, you separated from us. You are protesting,
- 9:46you're a Protestant. You can certainly become Catholic. We would
- 9:50welcome you to become Catholic. You can become a Catholic
- 9:53priest even if you're married. Yes, if an Anglican or
- 9:58Episcopal minister virtus of Catholicism and is ordained and accepting
- 10:03the priesthood, he can stay married and have children. We
- 10:06make the Catholic Church makes every accommodation. But you can't
- 10:10receive the Euchrest in a Catholic church. If you're not Catholic.
- 10:14You can't receive the euchres in a Catholic church if
- 10:15you're Orthodox. That's a schism that's been around from us
- 10:19a thousand years. They cutting themselves off from the Catholic Church.
- 10:24It's a little different, yep. Some of their sacraments are valid,
- 10:28not all, but an Orthodox cannot receive the Euchrist in
- 10:34a Catholic Church. Whatsoever. Now there are Eastern right Catholic churches.
- 10:40There are you know, Catholic churches. You could not even
- 10:45differentiate between them and the Orthodox, and they are in
- 10:48communion with Rome. They acknowledge the Pope, and they can
- 10:51receive the Eucharus an Anglican even if he think calls
- 10:55himself an Anglo Catholic, and many do abs. I mean,
- 11:02there was one one time that said, why can't I
- 11:05give masson a Catholic church? Why can't I give the
- 11:07EU course? I had to tell him because you're not
- 11:09a priest. You may think you are, but you're not.
- 11:15You have no place in our church. Your church is
- 11:18a false church. You were ordained falsely. You're not a priest.
- 11:24You may think you are. You may get a nice
- 11:27paycheck from the English government every month because you're a
- 11:30member of the Church of England. You have not Catholic.
- 11:35That would be a true sacrilege if you even tried,
- 11:39and no Catholic church, no Catholic bishop, would knowingly allow it.
- 11:44You're not one of us. You cut yourself off. You're
- 11:48no longer even a member of the body of Christ
- 11:52because of the heresy, especially since the nineteen seventies of
- 11:56your church. And I mean the Due pitched a fit
- 12:00and I went to Oxford. I'm great, Okay, you can
- 12:04you've got degrees and you can quote stuff. Here's what
- 12:08the Pope said about the Anglican Church, you know, and
- 12:11here's why he wasn't happy anyway. I mean he went
- 12:17from being old the Catholics are so bigoted because they
- 12:20won't let me give Mass in a Catholic church, to
- 12:23realizing the truth, getting angry and storming away. I mean,
- 12:29it does not matter if you have a freaking English accent,
- 12:32I mean pompous English accent, and you went to freaking
- 12:36Oxford that prohibited Catholics for a few hundred years. By
- 12:40the way, even though it was started as a Catholic institution,
- 12:44you're not Catholic, dude. You do not have the power
- 12:49to turn bread and wine into the body and blood
- 12:51of Christ. That would be a sacrilege, the same as
- 12:54if a Satanist did it. You are equal to a Satanist.
- 12:59If you come into a Catholic church and try to
- 13:01act in the role of a priest. You may be
- 13:03a very well meaning person in your own denomination. You
- 13:07may read the Bible and pray and that it's not
- 13:09the point. If you come into a Catholic church and
- 13:14try to institute a sacrament of the Catholic Church. That
- 13:19is satanic, it is apostasy, it is heretical. It has
- 13:25to be condemned by everyone. You have no place in
- 13:28a Catholic church. No more than a Catholic can go
- 13:32into your church and receive your fake Eucharist. He didn't
- 13:38like that, but he couldn't argue with it. This man
- 13:41with advanced degrees in so called theology from the highest
- 13:46university in England. My simple Catholic catechises knocked him over essentially,
- 13:54and he just got pissed off and walked away. You
- 13:57know what, He's welcome and become a Catholic priest. He
- 14:00is welcome to go to the Catholic bishop in his
- 14:03diocese and say I want to convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism.
- 14:09John Henry Newman did became one of the what was
- 14:12a doctor of the church. Now there's no reason he can't,
- 14:16but he has to abandon his faults. Counterfeit, heretical, schismatic, apostate,
- 14:24fake church. Why is it a fake church because it
- 14:28says the head of the Church is the King of England.
- 14:30God never said the head of the Church was the
- 14:32King of England. It's a nationalist religion. It's actually a
- 14:35racist denomination. I mean, if you have to all peoples
- 14:40of the world have to submit to the King of England.
- 14:43You know what does that say for Africans and Japanese
- 14:47and you know Irish. You know, no, my family would
- 14:51not bend the knee to the King of England. And
- 14:55the English committed a full on genocide against Celtic people.
- 15:00The Irish are the most enslaved people on the face
- 15:03of the earth. Half of the population of Ireland was
- 15:06forcibly killed or removed because we would not accept a
- 15:10fake church. You're not gonna You're not gonna win on
- 15:15this one with me. The Anglican Church is satanic to
- 15:20its core, and the longer it goes on, the worse
- 15:23it gets with their rainbow flags and gay dancing. And yeah,
- 15:30I mean, first of all, the English are the most
- 15:32inbred people in Western Europe. I mean you're talking at
- 15:37a little island here, and everybody English is English, right,
- 15:41I mean that is inbreeding. They don't have two branches
- 15:44on their family tree, and their church is fake and satanic.
- 15:50And I say that as someone with a great deal
- 15:52of English heritage, I can say that, Yeah, I'm basically
- 15:56equal parts English, French and Irish. The Irish is of course,
- 16:00I'm a Carol, but my ancestors were kings of England,
- 16:05Catholic kings of England. I have English saints in my
- 16:09family tree, and I will tell you the so called
- 16:13current King of England is an inbred moron. He doesn't
- 16:18have I mean, if he has two functioning brain cells
- 16:24to rub together to give him accumulative IQ of thirty,
- 16:27I would be surprised. He speaks beautifully, I mean I cannot.
- 16:33I cannot. I mean absolutely, he speaks beautifully, but his
- 16:38IQ is in probably the double digits. If that it's
- 16:45a wonder. He probably has seven toes. I have no idea,
- 16:49and he has no right to rule England, much less
- 16:53be God's representative on earth to rule the Church. According
- 16:58to the Anglicans, King supposed frickin' Charles is the pope. Okay,
- 17:05he's the head of the church. Now you show me
- 17:08where in the Bible Jesus said, I'm gonna choose the
- 17:10King of England to run my church. Keep looking for
- 17:17that one. Let me know when you find it. The sooner.
- 17:20The Anglican Episcopal denomination rots on the garbageek of history
- 17:25along with the Lutherans and Presbyterians, et cetera. The better
- 17:31the better. Anyway, the person asks the priest, you connect
- 17:36baptism with original sin and they say yes, Baptism was
- 17:41instituted by Christ for the destruction of original sin and
- 17:44to restore the grace forfeited by our first parents, which
- 17:48is absolutely necessary for the attaining of our holy destiny.
- 17:51Christ himself assisted that was must be born again of
- 17:55water in the holy ghast. Person asks quite reasonably, actually,
- 17:59how can man be born again? And they answer, just
- 18:02as the soul is the life of the body, so
- 18:05grace is the life of the soul with the supernatural order. Now,
- 18:08life is attained by birth. We are born into this
- 18:12earthly existence from our earthly parents, but we are born
- 18:15without the principle of God's grace, which carries with it
- 18:18the right to a life of eternal happiness with God. Thus,
- 18:22man must be born into the life of grace by
- 18:25water and the Holy Spirit if he wishes to possess
- 18:29the birthright to eternal and supernatural happiness. I gotta get
- 18:33simple water, okay. The person then asked, do you believe
- 18:39do you insist that baptism is necessary to salvation. And
- 18:46you know, I don't ever intend to have a conversation
- 18:49with a Graham family. Again, I grew up around him
- 18:52with him. I know the Grahams. I think they're very
- 18:56well meaning, good people. But if you go to the
- 19:00website right now, they will tell you that baptism is
- 19:02not necessary for salvation. I'm sorry, that's satanic. There's only
- 19:08one entity on the face of the earth that would
- 19:09so contradict the words of Jesus. But this person says,
- 19:13do you insist that baptism is necessary for salvation? And
- 19:16the prest answer, yes. Christ came to save men, and
- 19:21he has the right to dictate the condition of salvation.
- 19:24If you offered me a fortune, provided I would go
- 19:26to London be via Suez, particularly insisting that I should
- 19:31go via Suez, it would be little use my saying, oh,
- 19:35I'll go via Panama. It's so much more sensible route.
- 19:38You would reply, but I want you to go via Suez,
- 19:40or there will be no fortune. Now Christ has sneaked
- 19:43distinctly commanded baptism as a condition of salvation, and no
- 19:49arguments of men who cannot save us are of any
- 19:53avail against the authority of Christ. It is necessary to
- 19:57be baptized, or we shall never see God go and
- 20:00rejoice in the happiness of heaven. Now that's a tough
- 20:05one because, according to what I was told growing up
- 20:11and around Boone, North Carolina, in and around the Graham family,
- 20:15in class with some of them, and like I said,
- 20:19nice people, very nice people. Billy Graham insisted that his
- 20:23wife not be baptized, and from what I was told,
- 20:29he insisted that his children and grandchildren not be baptized.
- 20:34I hope I'm wrong. I hope, I pray to God
- 20:37they have been baptized. But you know, as much respect
- 20:43as I have for Franklin Graham, who let's admit, he's
- 20:46not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he says
- 20:48a very good, very good charitable works, and I have
- 20:51a great respect for him. If he's never been baptized,
- 20:55he's never received the Holy Spirit, he's not a member
- 20:58of the Body of Christ. And as an adult fully
- 21:03rejecting baptism, he's probably going to hell. You know, Jesus said,
- 21:10many will say to me, Lord Lord, did we not
- 21:12preach in your name? And I will say, truly, I
- 21:15do not know you'd be gone from me, evil doers.
- 21:19I hate the thoughts of that. I hope if someone
- 21:23hears this and they can pass a message on to
- 21:26Franklin Graham and encourage him to get baptized, they will
- 21:32and if he has, and his kids have, and am
- 21:34the kids I went to school with. I mean, I
- 21:36went to school with the grand kids. I hope someone
- 21:40will get in touch with me and say, oh, yeah,
- 21:43we figured it out, we got baptized. I hope and
- 21:46pray that's true. They're good people, but goodness doesn't get
- 21:52you into heaven. Jesus said, you have to be baptized
- 21:54to go to heaven. If you know, a child can
- 21:58be baptized against their will without not aganser will, not
- 22:02having any means or understanding of it whatsoever. An adult
- 22:07who purposefully and God's not going to judge an infant
- 22:13because they didn't have the opportunity to be baptized, that's
- 22:16you know. Catholic doctrine has developed on that over the centuries.
- 22:20An infant, a child, an unborn child who's not had
- 22:23the opportunity baptized, cannot be judged for not being baptized.
- 22:27They go to heaven. In fact, the blessed Virgin Mary
- 22:29personally takes them to heaven and watches over them and
- 22:32cares for them. It's one of the most beautiful recent
- 22:35more recent developments in the teaching of the Catholic Church.
- 22:38And it makes perfect sense. Someone, an adult or a
- 22:43person of the age of reason who rejects baptism is
- 22:48choosing to go to hell. God will judge them on
- 22:53their understanding. If they're totally stupid, you know God's going
- 22:58to judge them based on their understand But you know,
- 23:03I'm going to say, Franklin Graham has at least an
- 23:05IQ of eighty and he can read the Bible, and
- 23:10he better get baptized where he dies. Unfortunately, from what
- 23:15I understand, a lot of his families isn't going to
- 23:17be waiting for him when he gets to the other side.
- 23:19If he gets baptized, they may be waiting on the
- 23:22other side in a place he doesn't want to go.
- 23:26Because purposefully rejecting baptism that Jesus said is necessary for
- 23:32salvation is setting yourself up as your own God. Your
- 23:35opinion has become your own God. It's a violation of
- 23:38the first commandment, thou show no other gods before me,
- 23:41and I know these are good people. I know they're
- 23:44not particularly intelligent people, unfortunately, so I'll pray for him.
- 23:49I hope you'll pray for him. I hope I am
- 23:53absolutely wrong. But as we continue to pray for the
- 23:56unity of all Christians, which the Church instructs us to
- 23:59do it, he even gives us an indulgence for doing.
- 24:03Let's pray for the baptism of all Christians. Jesus said,
- 24:09if you love me, you'll keep my commandments. If you
- 24:11don't keep his commandments, one of which is being baptized,
- 24:14how can you say you love Jesus, you love your
- 24:18own opinion, you love yourself, you love your denomination, you
- 24:22love your pride. Don't forget the devil and demons believe
- 24:27in Jesus. Fully, they have more faith in God than
- 24:31we could ever imagine, because they know exactly who He is,
- 24:34but they refuse to follow his commandments. All right, So
- 24:38now let's talk about the rather controversial subject of indulgences.
- 24:43Father Sparrago says it has already been explained that by
- 24:47the sacrament of pence, the debt of eternal punishment due
- 24:50to the sinner is remitted but not temporal, not the temporal.
- 24:54This he must discharge either in this world by sickness, adversity, temptation, persecution.
- 25:00Voluntary works of penance are like in other words, all
- 25:03suffering helps a tone for our sins, or he must
- 25:11And the fires of purgatory after death very important, very
- 25:16very important. All Christians up into the time of Martin
- 25:20Luther believed in purgatory and accepted the Books of Maccabees
- 25:24as evidence for that. Martin Luther tore the Books of
- 25:27Maccabees out of the Bible and has led millions of
- 25:30people astray. I mean, you know, you say you're a
- 25:36Protestant out there and you're thinking, oh, you know, we're right,
- 25:40we don't believe in purgatory. That's, you know, a Catholic belief. Well,
- 25:46what do you say about the writers of the very
- 25:49writers of the Bible? Who did I mean, do you
- 25:52think that fifteen hundred years of Christian history from Jesus
- 25:56Christ himself and the apostles he taught personally up to
- 26:03Martin Luther's time got it wrong? Well, if they got
- 26:07that wrong, what else did they get wrong? You? Actually,
- 26:10if you start taking out the core tenets of doctrine
- 26:13of Christianity that go back to the very foundation and
- 26:16founding of Christianity and before Ethan, I mean, the Maccabees
- 26:19are Judaism. What are you going to reject next the
- 26:24resurrection Baptism? You're going to reject baptism? Yeah, well, anyway,
- 26:32says this is exemplified by the Holy penitent Mary of Egypt,
- 26:36and she was a very interesting saint for seventeen years.
- 26:39She led a sinful life after her conversion. She did
- 26:43penance in the desert for seventeen years. Her penance consisted
- 26:47in horrible temptations, in hunger and thirst and suffering from
- 26:51exposure to cold and heat. It was the same with
- 26:54other penitents. Yes, but now, of course pros will say, oh,
- 26:58you know, I accept you Jesus Christ as my savior,
- 27:01and everything I ever did bad just went away. And
- 27:05of course, under Martin Luther's teaching, nothing more you do
- 27:08bad can jeopardize your salvation. Once saved, always saved. So
- 27:10then you can go murder thirty people and rape one
- 27:13hundred and ten and set fire to a village and
- 27:15rob a bank, and you're still going to heaven. According
- 27:17to Protestant doctrine, which has nothing to do with the
- 27:22words of the Bible at all or the teachings of
- 27:25Christ in his Church. Obviously, God is granted to the
- 27:28Church the power, after after the reconciliation of the sinner
- 27:33with God, of changing the punishments yet remaining due to
- 27:36sin into works of penance, or of remitting them altogether.
- 27:40Our Lord conferred on Saint Peter in particular, and on
- 27:43all the apostles in general, the power to remove whatever
- 27:46hindred the admission of the penitent into Heaven. To Saint
- 27:49Peter he said, whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it
- 27:53shall be loosed in Heaven Matthew sixteen nineteen. And to
- 27:57the apostles he said, whatsoever you shall loose on earth,
- 28:01shall be loose in Heaven Matthew eighteen eighteen. Now, since
- 28:06mortal sin excludes from heaven permanently, and the temporal penalty
- 28:11of sin and the temporal penalty of sin temporarily, that's
- 28:15a hard one to say. Power to remit both one
- 28:18and the other is vested in the head of the
- 28:20Church and the bishops. We read the certain Christians of
- 28:24Corinth who had been excommunicated for their vices were pardoned
- 28:28by Saint Paul in the name of Christ. Second Corinthians
- 28:31two ten. I think it was First Corinthians one to five.
- 28:34He begins to talk about these and says of the
- 28:38man who was sleeping with his father's wife, give him
- 28:43over to the devil. That means excommunication. So then we
- 28:47get into Second Corinthians, and we see that they had
- 28:50been rejoined to the Church after giving up their civil
- 28:55lifestyle and going to confession and changing their lives. When
- 28:59the Church remits temporal penalty, she does not cancel them altogether.
- 29:04She supplies what is lacking from the treasury of the
- 29:06infinite merits of Christ and of the Saints. Many members
- 29:10of the Church have performed penances over and above what
- 29:12was due for their sins, and the store of their
- 29:15merits owing to the satisfaction made by Christ is so
- 29:18vast an extent that it far exceeds the penalties do
- 29:21all the sins of the living. According to Saint Thomas Aquinas,
- 29:25in these merits all participate who belong to the community
- 29:28of Saints, and the distribution of them was entrusted by
- 29:31the Son of God to Saint Peter, who is the
- 29:33doorkeeper heaven. If you want to belong to the communic
- 29:37community of Saints, you need to get baptized and then
- 29:41can confirmed into the Catholic Church, and then you can
- 29:49What did he say? And the distribution of these graces
- 29:54is entrusted by the Son of God to Saint Peter,
- 29:57who is the doorkeeper of heaven. Remember one time Charles
- 30:02Stanley had a great deal of respect Charles Stanley, Baptist
- 30:04minister good Man, good Man. He was given a sermon
- 30:09one time and he said to talking about the pearly Gates,
- 30:13and he said, people say, Saint Peter is going to
- 30:15be there. Saint Peter ain't gonna be there. Saint Peter's
- 30:17got nothing to do with this. He got so angry.
- 30:19I mean, he had once one little aside in his
- 30:23sermon and goes on a rant about how Saint Peter
- 30:27has nothing to do with heaven. Well, did he read
- 30:30his Bible? I guess not. He just has a hatred
- 30:34for everything Catholic or he did. Unfortunately, does it will
- 30:38be seen that no one is actually exempt for the
- 30:40payment of his debt, since what is still due is
- 30:42paid out the treasury of Heaven. Let's see. Oh, actually,
- 30:49skipped a line. There, let me try again. Thus it
- 30:52will be seen that no one is actually exempt from
- 30:54the payment of his debt, since what is still due
- 30:57is paid out the treasury of the Church. Here we go.
- 31:01I got the doorkeeper of heaven and super like, I said,
- 31:05I'm dyslexic. Some things move around for me. Hents. At
- 31:08the time of the Great Persecutions, the Church used to
- 31:10lay upon repentance centers public penances for expiation of the
- 31:15temporal punishments of sin, and afterwards commute them into lesser ones,
- 31:19or remit them altogether if the penitent manifests the sincere
- 31:22intention of amendment, or a martyr interceded for him. The
- 31:26Christians of the early Ages were most recent converts from
- 31:29Heathenism and needed rigorous treatment. Public penance generally consisted in
- 31:34exclusion from the company the faithful. Jesus said, if a
- 31:37man will not listen to the Church, then be unto
- 31:39you as a heathen. Against not just excommunication, but Christians
- 31:43were not actually supposed to speak to an excommunicated person.
- 31:46They couldn't come to church, and they were supposed to
- 31:49be an outcast, much like the Jews had treated the Samaritans.
- 31:53As such, really very strong terms the excommunicants communicate. The
- 32:01excommunicated were only allowed to kneel at the vestibule of
- 32:05the church and to hear the first portion of the mess.
- 32:08That's it. They were not permitted to receive Holy communion
- 32:11and as a rule, were not absolved until the expiration
- 32:14of their term of penance. Now this is not someone
- 32:17who's a heretic who's been excommunicated. This was the normal
- 32:21penance you might get just going to your priests or
- 32:23confession saying you know, I did such and such, and
- 32:26I mean they were pretty tough in the early days,
- 32:31a lot easier these days, that's for sure. During the
- 32:34time of fixed days, they had to fast on bread
- 32:37and water. This public penance usually lasted seven years. Imagine
- 32:42that you go to your priest. I don't care what
- 32:44you did. It is probably gonna say say, you know,
- 32:46two hell Marys, and now for our father, I got
- 32:48one that you go to. I always know what the
- 32:50penance is going to be. He says, if you see
- 32:52someone who needs help this week, can you help them out? Yes, certainly, Father,
- 32:57I can. Okay, I absolve your sins and the name
- 32:59of follows on the whole spirit. I mean, imagine seven
- 33:03years of fasting on bread and water and not being
- 33:06allowed to receive communion. This public penancey, you know, seven years,
- 33:12and it was only opposed for grave offenses such as
- 33:15apostasy or giving the Holy Scriptures into the hands of pagans. Yes,
- 33:20that's another thing. You know, all these Protestant groups, like
- 33:24say the Gideons that put Bibles into every motel room.
- 33:29People are always passing out bibles. You got to have
- 33:31a Bible we got not. Actually, no. First of all,
- 33:37every Bible that isn't an authorized Catholic Bible should really
- 33:42be destroyed and burned. It's a false Bible. It has teaching,
- 33:46false doctrine. The words of Christ have been changed to
- 33:50fit the false teaching of Martin Luther, and whole books
- 33:52have been cut out of it. This idea of giving
- 33:57out Bibles and trying to encourage people read the Bible
- 34:00well meaning, of course, but the Bible must be interpreted
- 34:05by the Church that God put on earth to teach
- 34:08in his name, the church that gave us the Bible.
- 34:14It was once an excommunical offense to give a heathen
- 34:18a Bible, a pagan, a non Christian and the reason
- 34:22is because they were so often misused. In the first
- 34:25few centuries of the Church, you had the Gnostics and
- 34:28various heresies where they took the very Gospels and words
- 34:31of the Christ and the Old Testament and made false religions,
- 34:36absolutely false religions. In the Gnostic Church, which was actually
- 34:40founded by Simon the Magician who's mentioned in the Acts
- 34:44of the Apostles, they taught that Jesus and the Devil
- 34:47were brothers, and golly all kinds of really evil stuff.
- 34:53I mean, literally turning Christianity on its head, and it
- 34:57became a huge religion of the time. I mean the
- 35:03Gnostic Heretics, which were essentially Satanists, were basically to modern times.
- 35:11Let's say, the Southern Baptist Church is to the Catholic
- 35:14Church in America the second largest denomination. So yeah, and
- 35:20I mean to this day, I mean, people think it's
- 35:23the American idea that everyone should own and read a Bible.
- 35:28No one should have a Bible that isn't authorized by
- 35:30the Catholic Church and has explanatory notes like the good
- 35:34old Dewey rings or the ignacious Yeah, where's my natious?
- 35:40What version is this revised standard version. Of course Catholic addition, Now,
- 35:46that would be good for everybody to have. But I
- 35:51don't know what's this. Oh what's that guy's name sayings,
- 35:56I'm proud to be an American, Lee Greenwood. Yeah, his
- 36:00own Bible now and in it's the Decoration of Independence
- 36:04of the Constitution of the United States. Now, I'm a
- 36:08patriotic American. I have no nothing against Lee Greenwood. I
- 36:13support Donald Trump one hundred percent. But I don't agree
- 36:17at all with putting secular documents like the Constitution and
- 36:23the Declaration in with the Holy Word of God. That
- 36:27is heresy. That's that's horrible. That should never be allowed.
- 36:33Donald Trump even has a Trump Bible. For a while
- 36:36he stopped doing it, thank God. I mean his you know,
- 36:40his wife was raised Catholic, I believe you know, she
- 36:43married a divorced man. There's some probably some issue with
- 36:46the church. But just yesterday was the Feast of the
- 36:50Medical Conception. Donald Trump went out and did a speech
- 36:55honoring the blessed Virgin Mary and closed with a Hell Mary.
- 36:59Maybe some might told him, you know what, that Trump
- 37:03Bible not such a good idea. If you want to
- 37:06hand out the Dewey ringms, We'll be fine with that,
- 37:10but maybe not the Trump Bible anyway. I know this is,
- 37:16you know, very controversial. People think everybody should own and
- 37:19read a Bible. Not everybody can understand the Bible. If
- 37:24they did, there wouldn't be fifty thousand Protestant denominations, each
- 37:28of which disagrees with the other about the meaning of
- 37:30the words of the Bible. That's you know, Satan's the
- 37:35father of lies. Satan's the father of confusion. Jesus prayed
- 37:39that we all be one, one church, one doctrine, one Bible,
- 37:42and one belief. It's fine to have it translated into
- 37:45various languages. The Catholic Bible was the very first book
- 37:50printed by Gutenberg on the Gutenberg Press authorized by the
- 37:54Catholic Church. Before that, for centuries it had been translated
- 37:57into English, French, Irish. Some of the most beautiful Bibles
- 38:03ever written were done by Irish monks, with all kinds
- 38:05of illustrations and all that. The Catholic Church never tried
- 38:09to forbid people from having a Bible. They tried to
- 38:11ensure that it was a correct, accurate, and complete Bible
- 38:15and that people could actually understand it. Jesus left us
- 38:19a church to teach his name. He did not leave
- 38:21a Bible. The Bible didn't come around to about four
- 38:24hundred years after the resurrection, I mean seriously, and then
- 38:28it had to be copied by hand. I mean, it
- 38:31was literally hundreds of years before the average Christian ever
- 38:34saw a Bible. Well, they had was the teaching of
- 38:37the apostles. Well anyway. It was also these stiff penances
- 38:44were given for heinous crimes such as murder, and the
- 38:46period was longer for that for lesser transgressions. Fast of
- 38:50forty days was ordinary penance forty days. That's pretty tough.
- 38:55That's lent, you know, but this is bread and water.
- 39:00But the Church knew that the design of God is
- 39:02not so much to chastise as a sinner as to
- 39:05detach him from earthly afflictions and lead him to a men.
- 39:09Another common one was walk to Jerusalem barefoot. Wow, huh, yeah,
- 39:15I'm not walking to Jerusalem. I mean, if if I
- 39:19had to repentance, I'd have to take a boat or
- 39:22something to get to the next continent and then I
- 39:25could walk. But you know, the early Christians took Christianity very,
- 39:30very seriously and they didn't even have a Bible, but anyway,
- 39:37the point was to lead him to a men. Thus,
- 39:39if the penitent showed by his conduct that his conversion
- 39:43was not superficial but real, it was deemed unnecessary for
- 39:46him to do further penance. Consequently, the penitential works were
- 39:50in some cases partially or wholly remitted. Now, since Christians
- 39:54form one body among themselves, the Communion of Saints, they
- 39:57can make satisfaction for one another. Hence the martyrs pleaded
- 40:01on behalf of the penitents. Saint Thomas Aquinas says that
- 40:04what friends do for us, we do in measure for ourselves.
- 40:08Since my reciprocity of affection, two are made one. That's
- 40:16a very difficult way of saying. I can pray for you,
- 40:19and you can pray for me. I can do penance
- 40:22for you, and you can do penance for me. And
- 40:24if you're a much more holy person than i am,
- 40:28or if you're actually martyred for the faith, your penance
- 40:31is going to help me a lot more than my
- 40:33own on my own behalf. In later times, when public
- 40:38penances were abrogated, the Church permitted the Contrite Center to
- 40:43discharge the debt of temporal punishments due to sin by
- 40:46means of alms, deeds, crusades, or pilgrimages. Jesus said, giving
- 40:50alms covers the multitude sins. Protest is, Oh, you buy indulgences,
- 40:54you buy forgiveness. Jesus said, giving alms covers a multitude
- 40:59of sins. Protestants sin, say, well, what does it matter.
- 41:02We're all forgiven anyway, and you don't have to do penance. Well,
- 41:05if that be the case, what the hell do you
- 41:06have against indulgences? I mean, really think about it. If
- 41:11it doesn't even matter in the first place to the Protestant,
- 41:13why are they complaining in the first place. I mean,
- 41:18that was one of the ridiculous aspects of Martin Luther's argument. Oh,
- 41:23they're paying for indulgences. Meanwhile, he said, it doesn't matter
- 41:27what a Christian does, it matters what he believes. No
- 41:30sin he could commit would jeopardize his salvation. Those are
- 41:33direct quotes from Martin Luther. So what was his point?
- 41:37What was his point? He said, sin boldly, Sin boldly,
- 41:42because you can't jeopardition he committed. He said, he encourage
- 41:45his followers to commit adultery and murder. And theft and
- 41:48lying encouraged them to do that. Now again is Protestantism
- 41:54of God or of the devil. Anyway, Formerly the penant
- 41:59had to apply for disipensation or mitigation. Later on it
- 42:03was offered by the church to the faithful. In the
- 42:05Middle Ages, there were good reasons for emitting penances on
- 42:08the payment of a sum of money, for in those
- 42:10days greed and avarice prevailed. That is true, and we
- 42:14know that every vice is best extirpated by its opposite virtue.
- 42:20The money thus collected was expended on the erection of
- 42:23churches and cathedrals. For the most part. This is how
- 42:27the funds were raised to build Saint Peter's in Rome.
- 42:30So when people were very greedy, the church said, hey,
- 42:32is your penance. You got to give the church money.
- 42:34There's nothing wrong with that. It built the churches, it
- 42:37built the orphanages, it built the hospitals. Jesus said, the
- 42:41giving of alms cover sins. At the Council of Claremont,
- 42:49Council Claremont in you know what, I don't even know
- 42:55what the sense means. At the Council of Claremont, inn
- 42:58must be omitted or altered and all they're saying. He's saying.
- 43:03At the Council of Claremont, it was said that penances
- 43:06could be altered or omitted, and the prescription as the
- 43:10time of place, et cetera, must be strictly observed. It's
- 43:15just very poor, confusedly written. But the indulgence is not
- 43:19lost on account of some trifling mistake. The indulgence attached
- 43:23to some prayers may be gained each time they are repeated.
- 43:26That's true. I pray, I don't know a dozen indulgence
- 43:29prayers every day. One of those is for the unity
- 43:32of all Christians. Some of them are so easy, like
- 43:37my Jesus Mercy's. That's an indulgence prayer, I mean really,
- 43:43in the case of others, only once a day. An
- 43:46instance of places where indulgences may be granted, we may
- 43:49mention the Via Crusus and Jerusalem, and the stations wherever
- 43:52they are canonically erected, the stations of the Cross at
- 43:55your local parish, the Skyla Santa and Roma. The stairway
- 44:00that is in Pilot's house up and down which our
- 44:03Lord was dragged. It consists of twenty eight marble steps
- 44:07and was brought from Jerusalem to Rome by the Empress
- 44:10Alena in three twenty six by snding this staircase on
- 44:14one's knees, meditating. Meanwhile, in our Lord's passion, an indulgence
- 44:18of nine years for every step may be granted. Large
- 44:21indulgences are also granted for visiting the tomb of Holy Apostles.
- 44:25I think it needs to be pointed out. I think
- 44:27I said this last week. When you say in an indulgence
- 44:30of nine years, what does that mean? Well, it's been
- 44:33clarified in recent years by the church. It comes down
- 44:36to like when they would give a penance, they would
- 44:39say you need to fast for nine years. Well, praying
- 44:44on the steps there every step counts for nine years
- 44:50of penance. It doesn't mean you can get nine years
- 44:52off of purgatory because purgatory exists outside of time. It's
- 44:56an eternity. So the Church has had to make that
- 44:58clear a lot of times. Now you won't see certain
- 45:02numbers of years, like the prayer to the Sacred Shoulder wind.
- 45:06I believe the prayer card says seven years indulgence. Well, people,
- 45:11you know I obviously believe that mant that's seven years
- 45:14off o purgatory. No, it doesn't really work that way.
- 45:17It means this praying, this prayer is the equivalent of
- 45:20doing seven years of penance. So however that works out
- 45:24at Attornity, I have no idea. Large indulgences are also
- 45:29granted for visiting the tomb of the Holy Apostles, the
- 45:31stations in Rome churches where remarkable relics are preserved, the
- 45:36chapel of I have trouble with this word poor to
- 45:40poor to umcula. I'm sure my Italian friend is laughing
- 45:46at me right now. She's from Umbria and lives in Rome.
- 45:50She would tell me it's not pronounced the way I
- 45:53just said it. Anyway. In a CSI and there's a
- 45:56poulture of Saint James and Compostella, besides many other an
- 46:01instance of holy things and sacred As instances of holy
- 46:04things and sacred objects to which indulgences may be attached,
- 46:08we may mention crucifixes, metals, rosaries, pictures, statues, provided they
- 46:13are not made of very fragile material. Your miraculous metal,
- 46:16your crucifix, your scalpular, these are all things we should
- 46:20have and use, along with holy water and blessed oil
- 46:23and blessed salt. These objects must be blessed by the
- 46:27sovereign pontiff or some priests possessing the powers. The indulgence
- 46:31is lost at the object to which it is attached
- 46:33is more than half destroyed. You do have to change
- 46:36out your scapular every now and then. Unfortunately, if that
- 46:40is to say, the greater part of the beads of
- 46:41a rosary or worn away, or more than half of
- 46:44the cross has fallen off from a set of stations,
- 46:47or also if a blessed object is sold or lent
- 46:50to another person for the sake of gaining indulgence, but
- 46:53not if it is given away after being blessed. More
- 46:57than one indulgence may be attached to the same rosary
- 47:00crucifix can likewise be indulgence for the hour of death
- 47:03and for the stations, but not one in the same
- 47:06prayer will avail to gain all indulgences attached to one object.
- 47:10Partial indulgences may be gained daily a plenary indulgence that
- 47:14means plinari is full this Latin for full very frequently.
- 47:18If the usual conditions are fulfilled, all crosses or rosaries
- 47:22brought from the Palestine which have been touched by the
- 47:24holy which have touched the only places have the papal
- 47:27blessing attached to them. The members of confraternities and some
- 47:31secular priests have personal indulgences granted to them, and indulgences
- 47:35see either pleinary when a full and entire emission of
- 47:38all temporal punishment due to sin is gained, or partial
- 47:41when only a portion of the temporal punishment is remitted.
- 47:45Indulgences are ordinarily greater or less in proportion to the
- 47:48prescribed works. For a small work of small indulgence, for
- 47:51a work of difficulty, a large indulgence is granted. Let
- 47:54no one imagine that it is easy, an easy thing,
- 47:57to gain a plenary indulgence. So he who retains any
- 48:01undue attachment to all earthly things is not altogether free
- 48:05from the guilt of sin. In other words, in order
- 48:07to get the indulgence one you have to be in
- 48:09the community of the church. You have to have gone
- 48:11to confession, and you have to have completely reformed your
- 48:15life and given up that sin that you need the
- 48:17indulgence for. It doesn't work if you're not contrite and
- 48:23haven't reformed your life. More consequently, from the penalty of
- 48:27sins than he yet needs purification by suffering. Only in
- 48:30as far as the offense against God is hateful to
- 48:33the penitent, does God remit the chastisement due to his justice.
- 48:38In other words, you have to be very sorry for
- 48:41that sin because you've offended God and resolved not to
- 48:44do it again, and then you can receive the indulgence.
- 48:47Plenary indulgence are granted by the Church provided that we
- 48:49apply the sacraments and pray for the Holy Father's intentions
- 48:52besides performing the prescribed work. Sometimes the condition of visiting
- 48:57a church is at it. For instance, for daily acts
- 49:00three theological virtues, faith, hope, and Love, a plenary indulgence
- 49:04may be gained at any one day in the month
- 49:06on the usual conditions. Another one the every evening I
- 49:11do the I cannot remember the name of the other
- 49:15prayers that it'll come to me in a minute, but yeah,
- 49:19the three faith, Hope and Love prayers. The same privilege
- 49:25is attached to other prayers, such as Sweetest Heart of Jesus,
- 49:27I implore that I may love the more and more.
- 49:30That's one usually taught children. It's the one you say
- 49:32every day throughout your life, into your ninety nine or
- 49:34hundred and ten. It's just as simple it can be
- 49:37to gain an indulgence. Those who are in the habit
- 49:39of going to confession every week contain any can gain
- 49:42any indulgence in the course of the week without going
- 49:45again to confession. Except the Jubilee indulgence. More than one
- 49:49plenary indulgence may be gained at one and the same communion,
- 49:54provided that the works prescribed for each severally may be accomplished.
- 49:58If a visit to a church or a public chech
- 50:00apple was enjoined, it must be made on a separate occasion.
- 50:04In foreign persons are only required to get a confession
- 50:06instead of receiving communion and visiting a church. If these
- 50:09be the conditions, they can gain the indulgence by performing
- 50:12some other work prescribed by their confessor. All who, by
- 50:16illness or other unavoidable circumstances are prevented from visiting a
- 50:20church do not lose the indulgence if they fulfill all
- 50:23the conditions within their power prayer for the intentions of
- 50:26the church, or left to everyone's discretion. In general, five
- 50:30our Fathers and five Hill Marys are considered sufficient. They
- 50:34must be repeated audibly either before or after communion, and
- 50:38offered up for the peace of Christian princes and the
- 50:43extirpation of heresy and exaltation of the Church. Remember when
- 50:48Father Spirago wrote this in eighteen ninety, there were still
- 50:51Christian kings and princes. We don't have many of those anymore.
- 50:55There may be a few left, maybe hungry, I don't know,
- 51:02somewhere in the Balkans. Probably we don't have many Christian
- 51:07kings or princes anymore. We do pray for the end
- 51:11of heresy, in the unity of all Christians, and of
- 51:13course the exultation of the Church. The most important plenary
- 51:17indulgences are the Jubilee indulgence, the indulgence of poor tiuncula
- 51:25por do you got it? I am so not good
- 51:28at Italian And that of the papal benediction. If it's food,
- 51:32I know it. You know, ask me any shape of
- 51:34pasta or you know I got that? But portiun you
- 51:39know PORTI, I forget it. The Jubilee indulgence is granted
- 51:44every twenty five years to the whole church and lasts
- 51:48for the whole year. The Jews kept the fifteenth years
- 51:51the year of Jubilee or rejoicing fifteenth or fiftieth. I'm
- 51:56sorry fiftieth. I know I've misread that. We have already
- 51:59explained how custom was introduced to the Church. The conditions
- 52:02for gaining it are the reception of the sacrament sacraments.
- 52:06You've got to go to confession and receive the ucurs,
- 52:08and the visit to a church. Besides at least one
- 52:11day of fasting an alms in the jubilee year. All
- 52:15other indulgences for the living are suspended except that of
- 52:18the Angelus and for the hour of death. Angelus is
- 52:21Angel of claud declared them to marry, you know, and
- 52:25praying for people the hour of death or the hour
- 52:27of your own death. But if applied to the dead,
- 52:29they can continue in force. As a rule, the jubilee
- 52:32indulgences can be gained only begained once, and that for oneself,
- 52:37but sometimes it is otherwise. Occasionally an extra jubilee is
- 52:41proclaimed by the sovereign pontiff under special circumstances, so this
- 52:45is his accession to the papal throne, the opening of
- 52:48a council, etc. And of course we just recently had
- 52:50a jubilee year. I hope you took advantage of it.
- 52:53I hope I did as well. Hard to remember right now.
- 52:56The indulgence of poor to Gula can be gained repeatedly
- 53:02on the second of August and on the evening before,
- 53:06as often, in fact, as anyone who has been to
- 53:09Confession and Communion visits the Poortiugila chapel or any other
- 53:16public chapel of the Franciscans or Poor Claires. That's good
- 53:20because I'm obviously not going to a chapel in Italy.
- 53:24Considering that I don't fly, there aren't that many ships going. No,
- 53:28I don't fly commercial. I absolutely love to fly small planes.
- 53:33My great uncle taught me to fly when I was
- 53:34a child. I love to fly. I hate flying commercial.
- 53:38I despise getting on a public aircraft. Not gonna happen.
- 53:44If I could take a boat to Italy, I'd give
- 53:47it a shot. But anyway, any chapel of the Franciscans
- 53:51or Poor Claires and praise for the intention of the
- 53:53Holy Father. The indulgences originated in this wise when Saint
- 53:57Francis was praying in his favorite church near our Lord
- 54:01appeared to him with his blessed mother and several saints.
- 54:04Francis entreated our Lord to grant plenary indulgences to all who,
- 54:08after approaching the sacrament, should visit that church. Our Lord
- 54:12considered consented, bidding him go to the Pope who would ratify.
- 54:20And the prescription as the time, of place, etc. Could
- 54:22be admitted or altered, but must be strictly observed. But
- 54:26the indulgence is not lost on account of some trifling mistake.
- 54:28The indulgence attached to some prayers may be gained each
- 54:31time they repeated, in the case of others, only once
- 54:34a day. As instances of places where indulgence may be gained,
- 54:38we may mention the via cruses in Jerusalem, and the
- 54:40stations the Scalusanta and Rome, the stations across in any
- 54:45Catholic church by the way, or a public in Catholic country.
- 54:49Sometimes they have them beside the road. Uh this there? Okay,
- 54:55you know what, I just started reading the same page
- 54:58over again, So let me where did I mess that up? Okay?
- 55:05So Francis went to Rome, and there we go. The
- 55:09Holy Father granted the indulgence, fixing it the second of August. Later,
- 55:13Pontus extended it to all public chapels of the Franciscan
- 55:16Order and to some others. These indulgence can be gained
- 55:19once for oneself. If gained more often, they must be
- 55:22applied to someone else, so you can go get indulgence
- 55:24for someone else. The communion need not be necessarily made
- 55:28In a church of the Order. A plenary indulgence may
- 55:31be gained by all who, after confession and communion and
- 55:35prayer for the intention of the church, receive the papal benediction.
- 55:38Previously the year eighteen seventy, this used to be solemnly
- 55:41given after High Mass on Great Festivals from the balcony
- 55:44of Saint Peter's. Bishops and priests are now again authorized
- 55:47to give papal blessings to their flocks on special occasions,
- 55:52such as the clothes of a mission get a sip
- 55:54of water. Here, a plenary or a give full indulgence
- 56:00may be gained the hour of death by those who,
- 56:02having received the sacraments and invoked the Holy Name, receive
- 56:07the papal blessing, or keep beside them some blessed object
- 56:11blessed by the Holy Father. Also by members of confraternities.
- 56:15Most confraternities, he said, we'll get in confraternities. Later, very
- 56:18good reason to join a confraternity. Okay, I'm a member
- 56:21of the two confraternities. Let us think the well, the
- 56:27Miraculous Medal and the Rosary. Obviously you need to check
- 56:32into that. And when we get into that, you'll understand
- 56:34it's very important to be a member of a confraternity.
- 56:37And by all who have daily recited the three acts
- 56:40of faith, Hope and charity or some other similarly indulgence
- 56:45prayer if a sick man. And by the way, I
- 56:48mean Saint Teresa Villa. It was going back very long ago.
- 56:53What was she eleven something I can remember when she
- 56:55were fifteen, fifteen, eleven hundred, I think it was eleven hundred.
- 57:00She said that very often, you know, the nuns of
- 57:04her order had to go to purgatory and they would
- 57:07appear to her and she would pray for them and everything.
- 57:11You know, people in religious life, you are held a
- 57:14much higher standard. But God willing, will all get that chance.
- 57:18But there was one that prayed the acts of faith,
- 57:22Hope and charity, and gosh, what is the name of
- 57:26that prayer? It's through the Sacred Heart of Jesus. You're
- 57:30asking the Father to perfect, forgive, forgive the sins you've
- 57:36done this day, perfect what you should have done, you know,
- 57:39make up for what you failed to do. I cannot
- 57:42remember the name of that prayer or the exact words,
- 57:44even though I say it every night. Then you say
- 57:46the three acts of faith, Hope, and charity, and said
- 57:50that one nun, who she probably thought was going to
- 57:55have a harder time than others, went straight to heaven
- 57:58because she had prayed that prayer every night. She got
- 58:00the indulgences from that prayer so very important. I have
- 58:04an old missile from nineteen forty that had it in
- 58:08there and said, pray this daily. So I started praying it.
- 58:11Didn't even know why I was praying it. The missile
- 58:13said pray it, so I prayed it. Now I'm really
- 58:15glad I did. After reading Saint Theresa a Villa. If
- 58:20a sick man desires of gaining a plenary indulgence should
- 58:24find it impossible to receive the sacraments, he may at
- 58:27least make an act of contrition. If he cannot utter
- 58:29the name of Jesus with his lips, he can at
- 58:32any rate invoke it in his heart. In any case,
- 58:35perfect conformity to the will of God isil is essential.
- 58:38The majority of priests are empowered to give the papal
- 58:41benediction to the dying. Those who have received the necessary
- 58:44faculties can indulgence, crosses, metals and the like for the
- 58:49hour of death. It is enough if the fates will
- 58:52keep the objects thus blessed in their houses to enable
- 58:55them to gain the indulgence. Indulgence for the hour of
- 58:58death are also attached to membership of various confraternities. They
- 59:02may also be gained by making acts of faith, hope
- 59:04and shary daily and one's own words and otherwise. The
- 59:07same applies to several other short prayers, such as Angel
- 59:10of God et cetera, that the one we said earlier,
- 59:14Angel of God my guardian, dear to who his love
- 59:16comments we have over the state side of the light
- 59:18and guard to ruin God. There we go Indulgence is
- 59:22obtained the hour of death are purely personal. They cannot
- 59:25even be applied to the soul's in purgatory. As the
- 59:28dying cannot, with the best of wills, perform works of penance,
- 59:31the Church almost entirely exempts them from the obligation of
- 59:34trying to discharge the temporal debt of punishment to their sins.
- 59:38The partial aduldness is granted by the Church are generally
- 59:42a quadrina or forty days or a period of one
- 59:46hundred days a year, five or seven years, fairly rarely
- 59:50for thirty or one hundred years. And again we don't
- 59:53really do that so much anymore because it caused so
- 59:55much confusion. But if you understand the reason, you'll understand
- 59:59the old cards, which I really like. Those fixed periods
- 1:00:04do not mark the number of days or years by
- 1:00:06which the purgatory fires are abridge. They do but indicate
- 1:00:10that as much of the temporal punishment of sin is
- 1:00:13remitted as would have been remitted by a corresponding period
- 1:00:16of the canonical penances formally imposed on penances penitence. Very
- 1:00:22complicated way of saying that counts for say, seven years
- 1:00:26of penance, not seven years of purgatory, because, as I said,
- 1:00:30purgatories outside of time. The Pope alone has the power
- 1:00:33to grant indulgences which are for the whole church, for
- 1:00:36in him alone jurisdiction over the whole church is vested,
- 1:00:40and he is a steward of the church's treasures. Bishops
- 1:00:43have the power to grant partial indulgences, but only for
- 1:00:46those in their own dioceses, just as secular magistrates can
- 1:00:49only judge cases which come within the sphere of their
- 1:00:52jurisdictional bishops are sometimes authorized by the Holy Seat of
- 1:00:56grant indulgences of a year or forty days. On such occasions,
- 1:01:00the dedication of a church. Indulgences may also be applied
- 1:01:03by way of suffrage to the suffering souls in purgatory,
- 1:01:06if these to be expressly stated respecting the indulgence, a
- 1:01:10plenary indulgence is gained for them every time the Holy Mass,
- 1:01:14the Holy Sacrifice of Mass is offered on a privileged altar.
- 1:01:18The Communist Saints enables us to assist the holy souls
- 1:01:21in purgatory by applying to them are good works, those
- 1:01:24good works, that is to which the remission of temporal
- 1:01:28punishment is attached. If we desire to gain an indulgence
- 1:01:32for the faithful departed, we must see that we are
- 1:01:34ourselves in a state of grace. Let him who would
- 1:01:38help deliver the holy souls from purgatory, as Saint Francis Xavior,
- 1:01:42first see that he delivers his own soul from hell.
- 1:01:45The application of indulgences to the souls that departed is
- 1:01:49by way of suffrage, not of absolution. It is by
- 1:01:52no means certain that the individual for whom a plenary
- 1:01:54indulgence is gained will be forthwith release from purgatory. The
- 1:01:58amount of punishment there I remitted to him rests entirely
- 1:02:02with God. To determine the indulgence of the privileged altar
- 1:02:05consists in this that whatever mass is celebrated from that
- 1:02:09particular altar, a plenary indulgence is given from the treasures
- 1:02:12of the church to one of the soul's in purgatory.
- 1:02:15In every cathedral there is one such altar, and in
- 1:02:18many parish churches or churches of an order, the altars
- 1:02:22thus privileged are generally indicated by the inscription altare privilegantum
- 1:02:32privileged altar. In other words, and a black vestment must
- 1:02:36be used when Mass is said at one of them,
- 1:02:38if the rubrics allow it. Of the day, the privilege
- 1:02:41must be renewed, in other words, that the priests can't
- 1:02:44wear black that day, he doesn't have to. The indulgences
- 1:02:48can be gained for one individual only, and for that
- 1:02:50one the mass must be offered, but the priests may
- 1:02:53include his intention for other persons to cease. The intention
- 1:02:57of the priests is not necessary to the gaining of indulgence.
- 1:03:00It will be seen that by no other means as
- 1:03:02a plenary indulgence so surely gained as by this, since
- 1:03:06it depends entirely upon the offering of the holy sacrifice,
- 1:03:09not upon the spiritual state of any individual. So if
- 1:03:12you have an indulgence a privileged altar, if you can
- 1:03:16get to one, and you can offer a mass for
- 1:03:19someone who has passed away, you should absolutely do so.
- 1:03:22Hope someone will for me, I doubt it. When very
- 1:03:28soon I have no family left, so I think I'll
- 1:03:31probably be entirely forgotten. But whether the mass is celebrated
- 1:03:34at the privileged altar affects that the complete deliverance of
- 1:03:38the soul from the pains of purgatory cannot be known,
- 1:03:41as it depends solely on the mergency of God. Priests
- 1:03:44who have made the heroic active charity for holy souls
- 1:03:47have the same privilege in their own person. The gaining
- 1:03:50of indulgences is most salutary, according to the Council of Trent,
- 1:03:54because we thereby keep far from us temporal evils, and
- 1:03:57are simulated to the accomplishment of good works. The indulgences
- 1:04:01we gain avert us from sickness, calamities, teptations, etc. Which,
- 1:04:05if no indulgence be gained, come upon us as a
- 1:04:08temporal punishment of sin. Thus, those who neglect this practice
- 1:04:12may be compared to a traveler who, although he might
- 1:04:15reach his destination by a short and easy route, prefers
- 1:04:18to take some long and toilsome road. Here's his own
- 1:04:21worst enemy. Some people take exception to the doctrine of indulgences,
- 1:04:25but this is because they don't understand it. Others condemn
- 1:04:28it because of the abuses of the Middle Ages. Was
- 1:04:32there ever a good and holy thing which was not
- 1:04:34misused by the wicked? The abuse of a thing does
- 1:04:37not disminish it diminish its usefulness. The abuse of a
- 1:04:40thing does not diminish its usefulness. Beautifully stated. Actually, that's
- 1:04:44quite well stated. Therefore, did not despise indulgences, for by
- 1:04:49despising them many have fallen into error and perdition. Well, yes, fathers,
- 1:04:56Spirago put a good period on the end of that sin.
- 1:05:00I think we'll wrap it up here you'll have a
- 1:05:03great week, and I'll talk to you next time.
