Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Grades are coming back A plus to E compulsory science
- 0:03Speaker 1: in the fifth form and the government's NCAA replacement being
- 0:07Speaker 1: announced at the weekend.
- 0:08Speaker 2: What you could do before was game the system by
- 0:11Speaker 2: doing a random mix of credits that weren't put together
- 0:16Speaker 2: in a good, solid package of learning that has gone.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Today's Year nine students will be the first group to
- 0:21Speaker 1: go through the new system, and the England Darfield High
- 0:24Speaker 1: School principal with me this morning, Andy, Good morning, good money,
- 0:28Speaker 1: r Good to have you on the show. Are you
- 0:29Speaker 1: a fan of this?
- 0:31Speaker 3: I think it's okay. You know retro sort of were Yep.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Retro's good, though, isn't it? We need retro because it
- 0:37Speaker 1: worked for us, so why wouldn't it work for these
- 0:39Speaker 1: guys and their grades have been falling right on an
- 0:43Speaker 1: international scale.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, there's two big topics there, right, So if
- 0:49Speaker 3: we go to the first one, do we need retro?
- 0:52Speaker 3: I don't think we do, but I'm not a big
- 0:53Speaker 3: critic of it, so I don't want to say that
- 0:55Speaker 3: there's some okay stuff in here. Definitely and find there's
- 0:57Speaker 3: some good stuff in here and c A did need
- 0:59Speaker 3: a revamp at the very least. No issues with losing
- 1:02Speaker 3: another one excuse me, although although we do need to
- 1:06Speaker 3: keep that effort in with our year eleven students in
- 1:08Speaker 3: particular Year ten and eleven can be quite a lost time.
- 1:12Speaker 3: So my hope is that the Foundational Award can have
- 1:15Speaker 3: enough meat in it to let those students feel motivated.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I you know, I've we've talked before. I'm a big
- 1:23Speaker 3: time of the vacational pathways. I've got a particular interest there.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So I'm pleased to see that these can be integrated
- 1:27Speaker 3: with the academic pathways and to see that they're we're
- 1:30Speaker 3: getting equal status. Of course, the delivery that remains. We
- 1:34Speaker 3: seen the concernacy out de Red still being bugged into
- 1:38Speaker 3: the vacational side of things, and I think my my
- 1:42Speaker 3: concern around the whole retro thing is what we don't
- 1:46Speaker 3: need is oversimplification. The employers. I knew, yeah, some people
- 1:50Speaker 3: found it hard to get and see hey, but once
- 1:52Speaker 3: they'd looked into it themselves and they could get there.
- 1:55Speaker 3: So I don't think that's the biggest issue. But you know,
- 1:59Speaker 3: the actual system itself is okay, what about you going
- 2:02Speaker 3: forward to the exams?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Andy, what's wrong with you know, compulsory exams for every
- 2:06Speaker 1: subject as opposed to internal assessment, because how do you know, like,
- 2:10Speaker 1: how do you really know how good a student is
- 2:12Speaker 1: until you've put them in an exam with no influence
- 2:15Speaker 1: and check their knowledge.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I said, there's lots of good stuff on this.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I'm certain sitting there to bag it. The exams, on
- 2:24Speaker 3: their own line, are one way of assessing a student.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I really I loved exams when I was at school.
- 2:30Speaker 3: However that was thirty or years ago, and there are
- 2:33Speaker 3: some better ways to assess students. Too much. Internal assessment
- 2:36Speaker 3: takes away teaching time, so there's a disadvantage in that,
- 2:39Speaker 3: and so exams We've got their place, of course, but
- 2:42Speaker 3: I wouldn't want to be entirely reliant on it. Not
- 2:44Speaker 3: that everything is entirely reliant on it, and this assessment
- 2:47Speaker 3: system either. So there are some good qualities in here.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Appreciate your time this morning, Andy, Andy Ingland, Darfield High School, Principle.
