- 0:32the Doctor Randy show, where the most powerful voices in beauty
- 0:36and aesthetics come to talk business, brand and bold moves.
- 0:40I'm Doctor Randy Boyett and if it's shaping the future of the
- 0:44industry, we're talking about it right here.
- 0:47She built urban decay into a billion dollar disruptor.
- 0:51She launched Callie Rae. We're cleaning beauty meets sexy
- 0:55sustainability, and she's setting a higher bar for beauty
- 0:59without compromising performance.
- 1:01Please welcome Wendy Zomier to the show.
- 1:05Hi, thanks for having me, Doctor Randy.
- 1:07Absolutely. We're so excited to have you on
- 1:09the show. I've watched the cult following
- 1:12of your products for many years, so it's exciting to have you on
- 1:16today. And if you'd like, we can just
- 1:18jump right in. Or if you want to give an intro,
- 1:21please feel free to. Well, we can jump right in, but
- 1:24the, you know, the quick one too is I started Urban Decay before
- 1:29there was an indie beauty industry.
- 1:32So I love to, I love the fact that first sort of big brand to
- 1:38make it in the indie beauty space really open the doors for
- 1:41so many entrepreneurs. Because it has been the joy of
- 1:45my life to connect with all of these entrepreneurs and to build
- 1:49a business where, you know, you create these amazing teams that
- 1:52are like family and then you see them go out into the beauty
- 1:55space and be even more successful.
- 1:57So it's one of my favorite things about the industry is all
- 2:01the amazing connections you make.
- 2:03Well, I'm a huge fan of the beauty industry, started my
- 2:06career at Dior. So, you know, love the industry,
- 2:09could never get enough. So I'm sure you're the same way.
- 2:12It it, it once it's in your blood, you can't get it out.
- 2:15So agree. So my first question as I was
- 2:19researching, you know, doing research for the podcast and so
- 2:22excited to have you on is what was the aha moment that sparked
- 2:26your idea for Callie Ray? You know, my aha moment was I
- 2:32was out surfing with my family and we were in the middle of
- 2:36nowhere. We were surfing on a point break
- 2:38off of a uninhabited island in the Indian Ocean.
- 2:43And I decided to take a little break.
- 2:45You know, I've got two boys and a husband that are like real
- 2:48surfers. And I'm just a fair weather.
- 2:51So I'm like, I'm tired. I paddle into the shore.
- 2:54I put my board down. I'm like, I'm going to relax on
- 2:56this beautiful island that nobody's on.
- 2:58And I turn around and just pass where the sand ends and the the
- 3:02foliage begins. It's filled with plastic trash.
- 3:07And I just realized like, Oh my God, even in this place, we're
- 3:10really dealing with sustainability issues.
- 3:13And I started thinking about all those naked pallets that I
- 3:17created that are in landfills. And I, like you, love this
- 3:22business. I don't want to not be in this
- 3:24business, but I thought there must be a better way.
- 3:26We must have a way to sort of start thinking about materials
- 3:31in a different way. And I had already started doing
- 3:34that at Urban. We had looked at molding our
- 3:36single eye shadows out of a really innovative corn plastic
- 3:40like 18 years ago, and it wasn't really feasible because the
- 3:44polymer was made here. I'd have to get shipped to get
- 3:47injection molded and then shipped back.
- 3:48You lose all of this sort of sustainability savings, but it
- 3:53was the beginning of that process for me.
- 3:55And then the aha moment was that surf session.
- 3:58Wow, isn't it great how just like 1 moment can suddenly, you
- 4:02know, change the whole direction of?
- 4:04Yeah, it really does. And I had already been in love
- 4:06with clean beauty just cuz people don't know this about me.
- 4:10But I was sort of. I mean we took the parabens out
- 4:13of products at Urban Decay like 18 years ago and no one cared or
- 4:16knew what a paraben was. You know, we, we did all kinds
- 4:21of things. We had a bio dynamic garden.
- 4:23We had like a Wellness like dog program where you could bring
- 4:26your dog or foster a dog. So we had I think up to 50 dogs
- 4:30a day. We had yoga classes.
- 4:33We had, oh, I built the whole office out of non off gassing
- 4:36materials. So this whole like Wellness
- 4:39clean piece was always really, really important to me.
- 4:42And so it was really fun to be able to like have a vision where
- 4:45I could pair that with sustainability and talk more
- 4:48about the clean piece because Urban, that wasn't the messaging
- 4:51for the brand, right? That wasn't what that brand was
- 4:52about. We just is a added benefit.
- 4:55But now I get to with Callie Ray, really talk about both the
- 4:59sustainability and the performance clean formulas that
- 5:03I love creating. Well, that's I think what's
- 5:05wonderful about having your own business, right as you're able
- 5:08to plug in, you know, different passions or things that are near
- 5:12and dear to you that you couldn't do if you know you're
- 5:15working for another company, right?
- 5:16So now you can, you can do whatever your passion is.
- 5:19I think that's amazing. So what did you feel was missing
- 5:23from the clean beauty space before you launched Cali Ray?
- 5:29Well, for a lot of companies claiming clean beauty.
- 5:32Yeah, a lot of companies claim clean and a lot of companies do
- 5:34do clean beauty. It's really a very doable thing.
- 5:37Now, I think my point of view on clean beauty is it shouldn't be.
- 5:44You shouldn't have to compromise performance.
- 5:47So I'm an athlete. I'm you ask anybody, it's
- 5:50usually at least one workout a day, maybe 2, sometimes 3.
- 5:56I love to play sports. I love to like do sweaty yoga.
- 6:00I love to lift weights. Like I like you name it, I'm
- 6:02into it and I need, but I also love to like wear my makeup when
- 6:08I do it. Like I'm not one of those like
- 6:10scrub clean people. Like I love to have a little
- 6:12mascara on or have my skin tint on.
- 6:15And I wanted products that would perform at the same time.
- 6:20So you know, we really launched our first product, which was
- 6:23that tubing mascara which gives you the performance of
- 6:28waterproof without the damage to your lashes.
- 6:32So that was really kind of where it started with the performance
- 6:34clean and we just kind of kept adding into the performance
- 6:37piece. Now I've heard the craze about
- 6:40the tubing mascara. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm
- 6:42excited to try it. But it sounds like you've really
- 6:46broken the mold there. That's one of your most popular
- 6:48products, right? It's definitely our number one
- 6:50seller and it is amazing because in the past tubing mascaras have
- 6:55not given you the volume you might want.
- 6:58And that was really the nut I had to crack, right?
- 7:01Is the no compromise not is it has to be all of those things
- 7:05that tubing provides the easy removal, the no damage to
- 7:09lashes, the sort of waterproof sweat proof performance and it
- 7:15needs to volumize. And so that was really the
- 7:18challenge was finding the right brush, you know, creating a
- 7:21formula that really did create that volume that you don't get a
- 7:24lot with a tubing mascara. So funny you said that about
- 7:28taking off a tubing mascara. So the first time I tried a
- 7:30tubing mascara, I didn't even know it was a tubing mascara.
- 7:33I was traveling for business and just pulled something off the
- 7:37shelf and I was in a rush and I went to take it off and I was
- 7:41like, my eyelashes are coming out, you know, because it.
- 7:44Looks kind of like you have to you.
- 7:46Definitely. If you have not taken off a
- 7:48tubing mascara before, you may think your eyelashes are coming
- 7:51off. Ours tends to roll off a little
- 7:54more than tube off. You do get like little black
- 7:58balls versus the tubes, but a lot of them do.
- 8:01Tube off and you will feel like Oh my God my lashes are going
- 8:05down the sink but I promise they're not.
- 8:08That's amazing. That's so funny.
- 8:09I think, I think all of us have that feeling the first time when
- 8:12we're not, we're not quite ready for it.
- 8:14So the the quote sexy sustainability, is that
- 8:19something you came up with or that's just been attached to
- 8:21your brand? Oh, no, that's something like I
- 8:24came up with. I just felt like sustainability
- 8:27can be such a downer, right? If you think about like, gloom
- 8:32and doom. I remember getting like a copy
- 8:34of New York Magazine and there was like a picture of the earth
- 8:38on the front. It was a whole story about like
- 8:40global warming. And I'm, I'm interested in this
- 8:43stuff and I almost couldn't bring myself to read it.
- 8:46And it's like a passion thing for me.
- 8:49But it was, I knew it would be sad.
- 8:51And so I thought, well, with Callie Rae, sustainability
- 8:55should be like joyful and fun and sexy.
- 8:57It should be like this cool thing you do.
- 9:00It should bring joy to your life.
- 9:01And it should be. We should make it as easy as
- 9:03possible. So we partnered with Packed
- 9:05Collective. Sephora's also partnered with
- 9:07Packed Collective. It makes it really easy to
- 9:09return your beauty empties. I think what people don't
- 9:12realize about makeup, right? And I'm holding my brand new SPF
- 9:1731 gloss here. But what you don't realize about
- 9:19things like this, right? This is smaller than a yogurt
- 9:22cup. So your curbside recycling, this
- 9:25goes right through the screen and into the landfill.
- 9:28So what you need to do is take this beauty empty and drop it in
- 9:34either an envelope and I'll send you one, or you can go to a
- 9:39Sephora store and drop it in there.
- 9:41And then that is the through pack collective and they will
- 9:44properly recycle those makeup empties.
- 9:47So shampoo recycles easily in the curbside recycling.
- 9:51Some larger skin care does, but usually makeup is a tougher
- 9:55recycling story. So we try to make it easy and
- 9:58joyful for everyone. Wow, what a game changer.
- 10:01So you really are changing the industry.
- 10:04Well, the, the, I mean, if you want to talk about changing the
- 10:07industry, we're really pushing on a lot of interesting
- 10:10materials like that. So blonde primer you held up at
- 10:12the beginning, we started making that out of a non petroleum
- 10:17based plastic. It's a sugar cane based plastic.
- 10:20It's the byproducts of existing sugar cane fields that are used
- 10:24to create the polymer that we mold the tube from.
- 10:28So tubes generally they don't get recycled, but at least it's
- 10:31not a petroleum based product. But what we've done now is we've
- 10:35actually infused that existing, that existing polymer made from
- 10:40sugar cane with a, with sequester carbon, I call this
- 10:45recycled air. We basically partnered with a
- 10:47company that pulls the carbon out of the air and basically
- 10:51makes it into little plastic beads.
- 10:53And then you infuse your existing material with that and
- 10:57it gets, it makes the recycling capacity better so you can
- 11:02recycle it more easily. And if it doesn't get recycled,
- 11:05you've trapped carbon in that package.
- 11:08So even if it is sitting in a landfill, it's holding carbon in
- 11:10it. So I know this is very technical
- 11:13and crazy, but there's all these cool sustainability things that
- 11:16are happening now that I'm so excited to tap into.
- 11:19It's my like science nerd self. But it's not, you can tell how
- 11:24passionate you are about it, so it it's really nice to watch.
- 11:28So when you were launching Cali Ray, did you feel any pressure
- 11:32to try to top what you've done at Urban Decay?
- 11:35Oh yes, and I haven't, I mean, Urban's huge, right?
- 11:39It's a legacy brand now. It kind of freaked me out
- 11:42because we had a influencer party when we launched our
- 11:45Hideaway Under eye product and there were these two young women
- 11:49there that were like 20-3 years old.
- 11:52And I realized they have never known a world without urban
- 11:55decay, which was really weird to me because I'm like, it's such a
- 11:59like indie, like innovative brand.
- 12:02It broke the beauty industry, broke the mold.
- 12:05And they're kind of like, yeah, it's always been around.
- 12:07It's kind of a legacy brand. I'm like so weird.
- 12:11I know I personally have a lot of those pallets in my drawer,
- 12:15so that's great. But you'll it, it'll get there.
- 12:18It'll build. It will.
- 12:19Yes. So which just kind of, you know,
- 12:23picking your brain on this, which Cali Ray product was the
- 12:26hardest to formulate without compromising the clean
- 12:29standards? That one there's so you know,
- 12:36there's, there's a lot I would probably say maybe the cell
- 12:40blown primer it does contain, I mean, I think that's the one
- 12:44because it does contain some level of silicone, but it's a
- 12:48very inert, it's a non cyclic silicone, which a cyclic
- 12:52silicone would compromise. But you know, we really had to
- 12:56dance around that to get that smooth feel and to find exactly
- 12:59the right kind of, it's just a small amount in there to really
- 13:03give you that smoothness and blurring.
- 13:05Yes, and here it is and I was just telling you that I remember
- 13:10when this launched and it came on TikTok and all of the skin
- 13:14fluencers, right, we're talking about this and and I had to go
- 13:18grab one and now I have another one.
- 13:19So thank you. I think it's phenomenal,
- 13:21especially for those 50 and over like myself that, you know, we
- 13:25have it's good for everybody, but for me, you know, like it's
- 13:29a non negotiable, we have to fill in those lines.
- 13:31This is bit this is definitely a big product at, you know, my
- 13:35tennis clinics where you have a lot of over 50 ladies and it
- 13:39seems to be the thing they get most excited about when I bring
- 13:42little samples. They all want a piece of the so
- 13:45blown primer because if you haven't tried it, you just need
- 13:48a tiny little bit. You don't need a lot and you
- 13:51just start here and work your way out and it basically erases
- 13:55your pores. It erases these fine lines.
- 13:58It just blurs everything out. It kind of looks like a photo
- 14:02filter in a tube. And, and you're right, so I do
- 14:05think the difference between this and the other primers I've
- 14:08used is I almost have to like like use so much of the others,
- 14:13right? Like so much.
- 14:15And I didn't realize I was under using Primer until I watched an
- 14:20influencer put it on. I was like, no wonder I'm not
- 14:22getting like a full effect. But this is truly a different
- 14:25product. So Congrats.
- 14:26It's really different. Like I said, just a tiny amount.
- 14:29It's going to smooth everything out.
- 14:31I like to let it sit for about 40 to 45 seconds and then I put
- 14:36a light layer of skin tint on top of it.
- 14:39And you know, if you are 50 plus, I have to tell you, the
- 14:42last thing you want to do is use a full heavy foundation.
- 14:46And with this, you're not going to need to, it's going to blur
- 14:48out the texture. And then what I love to do is
- 14:51just take a skin tint and I just put a little on the palm of my
- 14:54hand, I warm it up, and then I dip a brush in it and I
- 14:58basically just stipple the lightest layer all over.
- 15:01That is going to give you the most natural, beautiful effect
- 15:05because you blurred out the texture with the primer and now
- 15:08all you're doing is just slightly evening out that skin
- 15:12tone. And what you don't want is heavy
- 15:15cakey makeup on A50 plus complexion.
- 15:18Correct, Correct. It sinks into those fine lines
- 15:22no matter what you do. No matter what.
- 15:24So yes, so blown will help keep it on top, but I really think
- 15:28you'll find that if you focus more on blurring versus
- 15:33covering, you're going to get a better effect.
- 15:36Yes, very true, very true. So what is you know, back to the
- 15:41clean? What is 1 ingredient that you
- 15:44absolutely refuse to use and why?
- 15:47Well, I don't use cyclic silicones, I won't use the
- 15:52sunscreens that are hormone disruptors.
- 15:55I won't use talc. I mean, I don't know if you guys
- 15:58have seen that Netflix documentary, but talc is
- 16:01basically mind alongside asbestos.
- 16:05So that's why you want to look for talc free products.
- 16:10It's not that the talc itself is that bad.
- 16:12It's just really hard to make it completely pure because of where
- 16:16it's it's found in nature. So it's a mineral and it just
- 16:21it's like it's, it grows alongside asbestos so that you
- 16:25don't want to be putting on your eyes all over your face.
- 16:28So that is why we really stay away from talc.
- 16:32That would probably be my #1. Right.
- 16:35Wow. And it's funny because we we've
- 16:36heard the stories, but I didn't really know like, you know what,
- 16:40what that is. So that's interesting.
- 16:42So what's 1 product that you might have in the pipeline that
- 16:47you're obsessed with right now? Well, I talked about blurring
- 16:50earlier and I have something new.
- 16:53Guys are well, I know if you love the so blonde, you're going
- 16:56to love this. It's coming out in August and
- 16:59it's 8th. It's more about again, blurring.
- 17:03OK, OK. So get ready super easy
- 17:06brightening and blurring or warming and blurring.
- 17:09It's going to be. It's all good.
- 17:11OK, Congrats, Congrats. And so how many skews are in the
- 17:15line right now? I'd say about 30.
- 17:18We probably have about 30. I mean we have a few more on our
- 17:20website, but I would say it's a four.
- 17:21We have about 30 to 32 skews. OK.
- 17:25One of my other favorites I love that I love with the so Blown is
- 17:30the bronzer, especially for this time of year.
- 17:33It has a full dose of Matrixil 3000, which is a super effective
- 17:37peptide, really great for your skin.
- 17:39And this runner is completely adjustable.
- 17:41So you can mix it with the so Blown and get just a basically
- 17:45really pretty blown out sun kissed look.
- 17:47You can put it all over and get a more bronzy effect.
- 17:50I love to just take it in my fingertips and tap it on those
- 17:54places where I want a bronze. And it is so hydrating.
- 17:57It almost feels like your skin is nourished from within when
- 18:00you use it. Non streaky.
- 18:02It's just one of the most flexible, pretty products that
- 18:06will give your face a just a little lift instantly.
- 18:09OK. Well, and bronzing this time of
- 18:12year is. Bronzing this time of year it's
- 18:14better than than tanning. It's funny you just brought that
- 18:17up. I had a bronzer that shall
- 18:19remain nameless, but it was a favorite of mine for the last
- 18:22several years. And I went to just order it
- 18:26about a month ago and realized it was discontinued.
- 18:29Why this happens to me, I don't know.
- 18:31Like, I have a nap for picking things.
- 18:32So I had to do go dive on the deep web, you know, trying to
- 18:38find it. And I found a place that had
- 18:40four. Yeah, and you buy them all.
- 18:43I'm playing with the the some of those Shiseido sun care products
- 18:48that are good for sport, the sports BB cream.
- 18:52I love that for when I know I'm going to be like in the sun
- 18:56playing volleyball in the summer for like 3 hours and I want
- 19:00something that basically you got to chip it off after.
- 19:03So I do have a layer. I mean, I wear sunscreen every
- 19:07day, but there are days when I wear like multiple layers of
- 19:10multiple SPFS. And I know that dermatologist
- 19:13will tell you like once you get over 30, it's diminishing
- 19:16returns. But I do think the layering with
- 19:19heavier sunscreen coverage BB and a powder and then setting
- 19:25spraying it does just give you that a thicker layer.
- 19:29Of sure agreed agreed yes and and when we find out something's
- 19:34discontinued forget it you know so then.
- 19:36Oh no, you got to go like by them all.
- 19:38So I just scored four. Good.
- 19:41Yes, I'm. Like, so excited that I found
- 19:43it. So, OK, so clean beauty, you
- 19:48know, everybody's talking about it.
- 19:49Everybody's using the word, but it's not always like an honest
- 19:54answer to things, right? So how do you feel about how the
- 19:59term is being used today? Not just by you, right, but by
- 20:02the industry, You know, what are your feelings about?
- 20:05You know, the standards of how clean beauty terms are used?
- 20:09Well, what I like is I, I like the Sephora clean program and
- 20:14I'm not just saying that because I'm there.
- 20:16I like it because it's very clear and the brands are all
- 20:20held to a common standard that the retailer or you know,
- 20:25Sephora is setting and they're doing it in a worldwide way so
- 20:29that you're, when you hear clean, you can research through
- 20:34them what their standards are and you know that all of the
- 20:37brands are subscribing to that. I also think Credo does a good
- 20:41job too. They've we've got a very clear
- 20:43list of what is Credo clean and you're clear that you can shop
- 20:48there and the brands are adhering to that list.
- 20:52So you know at Sephora we have to provide like a dossier and a
- 20:56backup for every single product. So there is a real standard and
- 21:01a real sort of accountability for saying you are clean.
- 21:06So that's why I think it's really in the absence of
- 21:10regulation which no one wants more of, I think that the
- 21:13retailer standards are really good bar for customers to sort
- 21:17of look to. Now, there definitely needs to
- 21:20be standards. I I see a lot of things saying
- 21:22it's clean, but then I'm like, what does that actually mean?
- 21:26And yeah, in the world, natural and clean aren't always the same
- 21:32thing. And organic and chemical or
- 21:36chemical like man made, whatever you want to call it, they're not
- 21:41mutually exclusive. Well, they are mutually
- 21:43exclusive. But one isn't like the organic
- 21:45like organic lemon essential oil will burn your skin, right?
- 21:53But a very inert silicone that we have in so blown will
- 21:58actually soothe your skin and calm redness.
- 22:00So you have to be really careful just because something's
- 22:03marketed as all natural or only natural ingredients.
- 22:07That's often a good starting place, but it's maybe not the
- 22:10whole story. Sure.
- 22:12Yeah, that makes sense. And we and, and consumers, a lot
- 22:15of us don't know, don't know the difference.
- 22:18So Wendy, you are one of the only founders to have built 2
- 22:24defining beauty brands. And I think our listeners and
- 22:29watchers would love to know, what is your leadership
- 22:32superpower? I would say my leadership
- 22:35superpower is I like to build families and I like to empower
- 22:40people within that family to do what they do best.
- 22:44So that's what I loved about Urban, that's what I love about
- 22:47Cali. Ray is like families, the best
- 22:50families love each other. They often disagree and they
- 22:54find a way to, if there's rupture, they find a way to
- 22:58repair. And so I feel like my leadership
- 23:00style is to always be fostering. It's fine to disagree, but
- 23:06always fostering repair because you just don't want it to get
- 23:09too far down the line where you're not in repair mode.
- 23:13And that sometimes that means sitting individually with
- 23:15people, that means cheerleading people, it means holding hands,
- 23:18it means disagreeing, It means, you know, really just being
- 23:22completely honest and building the sense that this isn't just
- 23:27work. I mean, I do want it to be work
- 23:29from a like have your boundaries, have your own life
- 23:32standpoint. I don't mean like that, but I
- 23:34mean it should feel meaningful to your soul, your work life as
- 23:39well. It shouldn't just be, oh, I have
- 23:41my personal life and this is work and I just go do this.
- 23:44It should be something that is really meaningful to you and the
- 23:47people you work with should be meaningful.
- 23:49So it's important that people on those teams are they don't have
- 23:53to be besties, but there has to be some fostering of alignment.
- 23:57I couldn't agree more. So when I see those LinkedIn
- 24:01posts about, there's a lot of negativity sometimes about how
- 24:05there's no way that you can become close to the people that
- 24:08you work with and they'll always, you know, they'll always
- 24:11choose business over the friendship they've built with
- 24:14you. I, I don't subscribe to that.
- 24:16So I, I subscribe to what you're, what you're talking
- 24:19about as well. I agree.
- 24:21Yeah, I think there are business decisions that always have to be
- 24:25made, but they there's also hard decisions that have to be made
- 24:29in a family too, so. Yes, couldn't agree more.
- 24:34So what's what is something about being a founder that no
- 24:39one prepared you for? Well, ultimately it all falls
- 24:45back on you, right? So it's that's really what it
- 24:49is. And I think as a founder, what I
- 24:54love most about it is that I get to be like that Jack of all
- 24:58trades. I'm sort of don't love being a
- 25:00specialist. So I love digging into all of
- 25:03the weeds of all the different aspects of the business.
- 25:06And so I think I wasn't prepared.
- 25:11Well, I was a curious person, but I wasn't prepared for how
- 25:15curious you really need to be all the time.
- 25:17And I think that that is something I've learned
- 25:20throughout the years is you always have to be asking
- 25:22questions and being really curious and digging in because
- 25:26you got to be involved in everything.
- 25:27You got to know everything. Yes.
- 25:29And you're right, everything is on you.
- 25:32And I'm sure you've lived through this where somebody on
- 25:34your team makes, you know, some kind of a huge mistake.
- 25:37And they're like, oh, just tell them that I did it.
- 25:40No, it doesn't matter, right? It's at the end of the day, it's
- 25:43you that's, you know, responsible for that, right?
- 25:46Yeah. That that excuse doesn't work
- 25:48anymore. OK, So what is the one Cali Ray
- 25:53product that you use every single day?
- 25:55No exception. Well, I think it's the mascara,
- 25:59but now, now I'd have to say no. You know what?
- 26:02I will go a day or two without mascara.
- 26:04This guy. This is the new Lip Guard SPF 31
- 26:08gloss. And.
- 26:10I have it on, it's in shade Big Sur, but we have 5 shades and I
- 26:14just love the idea of a gloss that you would just think of the
- 26:19text, the balmy texture and the glossy shine right of your
- 26:23favorite gloss. And then it's got SPF 31 because
- 26:27you really should be protecting your lips.
- 26:29And that is a place on your face that even if you are religious
- 26:32about putting on your sunscreen, you probably are not really
- 26:35religious about using sort of a cakey UN, you know, yucky
- 26:40tasting, thicker kind of gloss. So.
- 26:46And his packaging is so beautiful.
- 26:48I have one here. Oh yeah, you got the echo.
- 26:51It's pretty. So the packaging is beautiful.
- 26:53It's, you know, something that I've been like excited to like
- 26:57take out of my purse and use, you know, during the packaging
- 27:00is beautiful. And I picked this is like the
- 27:03other thing I love about being a founder is like everything's
- 27:05personal, right? So I picked this shade for the
- 27:09cap. It's like a sun bleached pink
- 27:12neon, right? And I had this really beautiful,
- 27:16beautiful bikini I loved and it was kind of an orangey color.
- 27:21And then I left it out in the sun and it had a whole summer's
- 27:24worth of wear on it. But by the end of the summer, I
- 27:26loved it even more because it had faded to this sun bleached
- 27:30neon color. So this is like a throwback to
- 27:34one of my favorite summers of and my favorite bikinis.
- 27:37That's so fun. So it's very near and dear to
- 27:40you so. Everything's personal in my
- 27:42line, yeah. Yeah, that's great.
- 27:45So what beauty product that might not be yours even has
- 27:49stood the test of time for you like you were just mentioning a
- 27:52few items? I would say the Skinceutical CE
- 27:57Farrillic serum has been on my morning routine for a really
- 28:04long time now, and I think the Obashi one's really good too.
- 28:08I think any of those vitamin C serums with a really high level
- 28:11of C, well, for me, I need, you know, like a 15.
- 28:15Some other people may need the 20 if you're oily or 10 if
- 28:18you're dryer. But for me, the fifteens like a
- 28:20perfect sweet spot. And I just really love both of
- 28:24those C serums, but I tend to like end up with the C for like
- 28:29more often. So that one is great.
- 28:32I also love my Kerastas. What is it there a piece serum?
- 28:39It really keeps, you know, my ends in great shape and I love
- 28:44my Maison Luin Marie #4 fragrance.
- 28:46I don't love overpaying for fragrance but that one smells
- 28:50really high end and beautiful. It's a santal based fragrance
- 28:54and it's definitely affordable. So on that topic, do you think
- 28:58Cali Ray will ever dip into skin care or hair care or anything in
- 29:04that? I mean, that was how I
- 29:06originally concepted the brand was as a lifestyle story.
- 29:10And I do have so many amazing ideas for, you know, all those
- 29:17kinds of products. But right now we're focused on
- 29:19makeup. But we might have a few
- 29:21surprises on the way, especially on our exclusive.com, our
- 29:25website where we have a few exclusives.
- 29:27OK I've been trying this the the setting spray yes and loving it.
- 29:33I was not really a setting spray girl, but not long ago I went to
- 29:39a conference, medical conference, and I knew this
- 29:43makeup that I was putting on at 7:00 in the morning was going to
- 29:46have to last me until around midnight, right?
- 29:49Because I didn't have time to do like a whole, you know, costume
- 29:52change in between. And I had bought a setting spray
- 29:56to go with me and I And then at the end of the night, I was
- 29:58like, my face still looks, you know, like it did this morning.
- 30:02And then so then I was like, now I'm diving into better ones.
- 30:05And then when I got this last week, I'm blown away by it.
- 30:08It's really great. Well, I'm glad you love it.
- 30:10We just got a clinical testing back on that and we got 24 hour
- 30:13wear on that. It's amazing.
- 30:16It's amazing and it really does set your makeup.
- 30:20But what I love most about it is I don't know if you know, but I
- 30:23invented the all nighter setting spray, which sort of launched
- 30:25the category. And you know, my setting spray
- 30:28journey is, you know, I'm a girl from Texas and I would spray my
- 30:33face with Hairspray. I would literally would take a
- 30:35deep breath, spray my face with Hairspray and keep my makeup on.
- 30:40But then it switched to finally like I was really into wearing a
- 30:44full beat and I was a busy, you know, entrepreneur.
- 30:47I needed it to last. So then we invented all nighter
- 30:50setting spray in conjunction with Scandinavia and their
- 30:53special technology they had. And then we've I've since
- 30:57evolved that into this setting spray, which has a lighter mist.
- 31:02So you're not feeling like you're getting water droplets on
- 31:04your face. You almost feel like it's in
- 31:06sort of like a misty kind of environment.
- 31:08And then it's got great skin care ingredients in it.
- 31:11So it's got niacinamide in it, it's got seawater minerals in
- 31:15it, and it's got my favorite not showing up in big spikes on the
- 31:19Google search trends. But my personal favorite is it
- 31:22has transdermal magnesium in it. And so that is great for skin
- 31:26recovery. You know how when you work out
- 31:27hard, you go take a magnesium bath with magnesium flakes or
- 31:30Epsom salt and it helps your muscles recover through your
- 31:33skin, You know, through the transdermal absorption of the
- 31:36magnesium, This is the kind of the same thing.
- 31:38It helps your skin recovery on your face.
- 31:40And it's so lightweight and hydrating that you can just, if
- 31:45your face needs a drink direct day, you can just spray it and
- 31:48it's, it's going to feel really good and it's going to rehydrate
- 31:50your skin. Wow, I did not know about all
- 31:52those ingredients but all. Those benefits and ingredients,
- 31:55yeah. I love it so.
- 31:56Thank you. I call it sprayable skin care,
- 31:58but mostly it's a setting spray. Yeah, this and this might last
- 32:02me about a year because I only really use setting spray when
- 32:05I'm going out, like, you know, I'm not wearing.
- 32:08But you might want to try using it throughout your day only
- 32:12because it's got such great ingredients.
- 32:14Why not set your makeup? Have it last?
- 32:16And my tip is if you're using setting spray, always make sure
- 32:21I call it spraying the undercarriage, right?
- 32:23Everyone does this. Right.
- 32:26OK, you got to spray up because you've got angles this way too.
- 32:30So I always like just, you know, spray up a couple of sprays to
- 32:34make sure I get my lower jawline, I get under my nose,
- 32:37right. If you have to blow your nose or
- 32:39sneeze, like that's going to get rubbed off and it's going to
- 32:41turn red. So you want your makeup to stay
- 32:43right there. So spray the great.
- 32:46Point. That's a great point.
- 32:47I love it. And I feel like it like marries
- 32:50all the makeup that you've put on.
- 32:51Like anything that's a little powdery, it just kind of blends
- 32:54everything in, so I love it so. I even love, I mean give you one
- 32:58last setting spray tip. I love to setting spray and then
- 33:01I actually will take my powder brush, which isn't I don't re
- 33:06dip, but I just re tap here and here and here where I get a
- 33:10little bit shiny. So I like set the setting spray
- 33:14again with powder in my particular problem area.
- 33:17So if you tend to be dry, you wouldn't need to do that.
- 33:19But if you tend to be oily, you might want to do sort of the
- 33:22lightest brushing ever with a little bit of setting.
- 33:26OK, I love these tips. That's great.
- 33:29So one last question before we jump into the speed round.
- 33:33If you weren't in the beauty industry, what would you be
- 33:36doing? Oh my gosh.
- 33:37I would be a broadcast journalist.
- 33:39That's what I thought I wanted to do after school and got a
- 33:43little bit derailed and ended up in beauty, which is great.
- 33:48But I really saw myself as like, you know, today you'd say Aaron
- 33:54Burnett, right? Yeah, that's great.
- 33:56Well, see, and you had an answer ready to go, I mean.
- 33:59Oh, no, I'm not making this up. I thought I was going to be news
- 34:02girl. Yeah.
- 34:03That's phenomenal. So most people don't know what
- 34:06they would do if they weren't doing that.
- 34:07So that's great. Well, Wendy, thank you so much
- 34:10for joining us today. It's been amazing.
- 34:13And is there anything else that you want to share with the
- 34:17audience about Callie Ray? Not necessarily about Cali Rae,
- 34:22but I just love giving beauty tips and I would tell you, you
- 34:27know, make sure you curl your eyelashes before you put on that
- 34:30that tubing mascara. They will, it will.
- 34:32Tubing will keep them lifted all day.
- 34:34OK, OK, I love that and I love the beauty tips We do a lot of
- 34:39we feature a lot of skin care lines and dermatologist.
- 34:42So this has been this has been great.
- 34:44We are now going to invite you to do our speed round a few more
- 34:48minutes and we're excited for our listeners to get to know you
- 34:51a little bit better. OK all.
- 34:53Right. I'm excited and scared at the
- 34:54same time. OK, don't be scared, they're
- 34:57easy questions. OK, Ready Lipstick or gloss?
- 35:01Gloss product you never leave home without.
- 35:05Gloss. Morning person or night owl?
- 35:10Oh my gosh I used to be a night owl and now I'm a morning person
- 35:14in the last like 4 years since the pandemic.
- 35:17OK, OK, cleanser you are loving right now.
- 35:21Oh I have been a fan of the Shuamura cleansing oil for years
- 35:26and years and absolutely love it.
- 35:29Cleansing oils are making like a huge.
- 35:31Renaissance right now. Oh my gosh, it's to me.
- 35:33You got a double cleanse, though.
- 35:35You got a cleansing oil and then you got to use either a Jelly or
- 35:39a surfactant cleanser depending on your skin type.
- 35:41I'm a double cleanser myself, so I think that's the key.
- 35:45OK Brand, The brand founder that you most admire.
- 35:50I would say, I would say Jane Warwent from Dermalogica and
- 36:00Laney Crawl from Say and I just, I love Jane.
- 36:05She is a real inspiration. She's a really amazing woman and
- 36:10it's gotten me involved in a lot of really cool things, like
- 36:12really sort of saw a lot in me. I felt like she really took me
- 36:16under her wing. And then I just, Laney, I met at
- 36:20a Sephora conference she started say she has really taken that
- 36:24brand from zero to hero so fast. It's really been impressive to
- 36:28watch her digital savvy and brand savvy and she's a lovely
- 36:33person too. So I would give a shout out to
- 36:36her and say Congrats and blown away by what you've
- 36:39accomplished. Yeah, I have a few of her
- 36:41products as well. OK, one app you couldn't live
- 36:45without. Park Mobile.
- 36:48I live in Newport Beach and you got to pay to park everywhere
- 36:51you go. OK, last thing that you googled.
- 36:54Gosh. What is the last thing I Oh, a
- 36:58surf hat? OK.
- 37:00Yeah, I found this really cool surf hat from a tiny little
- 37:02brand and I googled them there. You go.
- 37:05So what would you say is your superpower strength in business?
- 37:11I would say my superpower strength is that I have a lot of
- 37:15endurance and I'm very resourceful.
- 37:19What is your guilty pleasure TV show or streaming show I'm.
- 37:27Trying to think I don't watch that much TV, but I did.
- 37:34I don't know, that one's hard for me.
- 37:37That's OK, we can pass. What's a beauty?
- 37:40What did I just recently watch? Well, you know what I do love?
- 37:44Actually, I did love streaming. A little guilty pleasure, I
- 37:46guess it's the Diplomat. I really like that one.
- 37:48OK, there you go. There's one.
- 37:50OK. Oh, Handmaid's Tale, that's one.
- 37:53OK, there's I. Was thinking Netflix when you
- 37:56said streaming. I just went to Netflix but it's
- 37:57Hulu so anyway. Yeah, that's OK.
- 38:00What is a beauty trend you wish would die?
- 38:04I don't like dark lip liner. It's a thing right now again,
- 38:09but I didn't like it when it started and I don't like it now.
- 38:13OK, what is your dream collab for Cali Ray?
- 38:18Oh my gosh, I would say that's a tough one because I have so many
- 38:26brands I like. I don't know, that one's hard.
- 38:28I can't answer that one. I have so many dream collabs.
- 38:31I could just go on it. I go no, wait, that one.
- 38:34No, that one, no, that one. Like I would love to do a dream
- 38:36collab with this. The brand that makes this little
- 38:39sweater I'm wearing, it's called Stone Immaculate.
- 38:40You know, like tiny little brand.
- 38:43I mean, not tiny, but you know, really cool custom brand
- 38:46clothing brand out of Long Beach.
- 38:49That would be a really dream collab.
- 38:51OK, yeah. What is a scent that instantly
- 38:54lifts your mood? Well, I'm going to go back to my
- 38:57Maison Louis Marie. But if you're going just like
- 39:00pure sense, I love like very citrusy things like Bergamo,
- 39:05things like that in my house. Like those to me feel really
- 39:08uplifting. OK, if Callie Rae had a theme
- 39:12song, what would it be? California Love.
- 39:16OK, perfect. All right.
- 39:20Most used emoji on your phone right now?
- 39:24Oh, it's the crazy face where the thing has one eyeball bag
- 39:27and sticking its tongue out like everything's crazy.
- 39:30And that's a good one. That's a really good one.
- 39:32If you could have dinner with any woman in beauty, who would
- 39:36it be? Well, I am really lucky because
- 39:39I can't have dinner with any woman in beauty, so I can't
- 39:43answer that question. But I did just have dinner last
- 39:46week with Artemis Patrick, the CEO of Sephora.
- 39:49The week before that I had dinner with Tara Simon, the
- 39:52president of Estee Lauder, and I'm scheduled to have dinner
- 39:57with Carol Hamilton, who is the president of L'Oreal US.
- 40:01So are, you know, the luxe division.
- 40:03So I'm. I'm not meaning to name drop
- 40:06here or exclude anybody who I'm very good friends with in the
- 40:09industry, but I can have dinner with anybody you.
- 40:12Live the dream. OK, I got the dream and I'm just
- 40:16going to tell you right now, all those people I mentioned are
- 40:18amazing and I'm not just having dinner with them because of that
- 40:22job title. I'm having dinner with them
- 40:23because I adore them. Sure.
- 40:26That's great. That's good to know.
- 40:28All right. Glossy skin or matte finish?
- 40:32Well, I would say neither. Natural skin finish all the way.
- 40:36OK. Glossy is hard to wear unless
- 40:39you're 20 and Matt just feels dry and aging.
- 40:44Like why not have a beautiful natural skin finish?
- 40:48OK, what is a beauty trend that you may have fully embraced at
- 40:52one point but you cringe at now? Maybe the Hairspray on the face,
- 40:55I don't know. Yeah, Hairspray on the face or,
- 40:59you know, I would tell you it was round.
- 41:01I call it round eyeshadow. So.
- 41:03So now we go up with our shadow, right?
- 41:07We know to go up. And there's a really great
- 41:10makeup artist called Mr. Makeup Artist.
- 41:13His name's Trevor Teed. If you want great makeup tips
- 41:15for women over 40 about how to lift up, follow Trevor.
- 41:20But in the 90s and early 2000s, when I was starting Urban Decay,
- 41:26I was really into round eyeshadow.
- 41:28So it's like everything felt really.
- 41:30I look at pictures, I'm like, it's ashy and it's rounds.
- 41:33Like, how did this happen? And how was I calling myself a
- 41:36beauty expert at that time? But.
- 41:38Yeah. We live and learn and we evolve
- 41:40so. How long does it take you to get
- 41:43ready in the morning? It depends.
- 41:46If I am either big events, big TV appearance, something like
- 41:51that. It could take a while.
- 41:54If you're just saying makeup, you know, I could, I could spend
- 41:56an hour on my makeup, but I can also be out the door and looking
- 42:01fairly decent in five to seven minutes.
- 42:04Wow. Be just a very pared down like.
- 42:07We want to record that, Wendy. I can record it and show you
- 42:11watch it. Yeah.
- 42:12It's you know, you got your you got got your go to stash and you
- 42:16have it ready and your brushes and everything ready and you
- 42:19really can be out the door. Yeah.
- 42:22Pretty quickly, the key things to get out the door fast, and
- 42:26I'm again talking like over 4550 is you want to reduce redness.
- 42:32That really redness ages you. So I use a neutral shadow all
- 42:36over my lid. I don't even try to do some of
- 42:38the highlighting or you know, like shadowing.
- 42:41You just use a neutral shadow that matches your skin tone.
- 42:43You you like, run it under your eye to get rid of that under eye
- 42:47redness too. You do a black pencil on the
- 42:50upper inner waterline. You toss on some mascara, maybe
- 42:55a thin little layer of skin, tint and a gloss and go.
- 42:59That's it. Oh, and setting spray to keep it
- 43:01on. Wouldn't that be a great video
- 43:02or feature? I think it'd be great too.
- 43:04I can do 1. It's a 7 minute beauty routine.
- 43:08So yeah, you'd be great at it. I mean, you of all people like
- 43:11the beauty icon. It'd be great.
- 43:13So OK. And I, I think that's Lucy.
- 43:17We have one more question. What is in your bag that would
- 43:20surprise people in your makeup bag?
- 43:25Always it's not that surprising, but always tiny baby nail
- 43:30Clippers and a file. And it's because I have very
- 43:34thin fragile nails and since the pandemic I have not put gels
- 43:38really or even Polish on my nails.
- 43:40I have one sort of organic Polish I use for special
- 43:43occasions but it does non acetone based, non
- 43:45nitrocellulose based, and but I do tend to like chip in pretty
- 43:51easily so I always have a nail file.
