- 0:04I in my savior. I'm happy and blessed.
- 0:07Are you blessed? Are you happy in?
- 0:09Jesus, I hope you are. And if you don't know Jesus
- 0:13today, I hope that you will come to know him and we will discover
- 0:16how we can know him as we come to the gospel of Mark in chapter
- 0:214, Because we are continuing our series within a series.
- 0:30By carefully surveying the parable of the sower.
- 0:34And so let's read again from verse 1.
- 0:41And Mark for which reads again, he began to teach beside the sea
- 0:48and a very large crowd gathered about him so that he got into a
- 0:53boat and sat in it on the sea. And the whole crowd was beside
- 0:58the Sea on the land and he was teaching them, many things in
- 1:02Parables and in his teaching he said to them.
- 1:05Listen behold A sower went out to sow and as he sowed some Fell
- 1:12along the path and the birds came and devoured.
- 1:14It verse five. Other seed fell on Rocky ground
- 1:21where it did not have much soil and immediately it sprang up
- 1:26since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was
- 1:31scorched. And since it had no root it
- 1:34withered away. Other seed fell among thorns and
- 1:38the Thorns grew up and choked it and it yielded no grain and
- 1:41other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain growing up in
- 1:45increasing and yielding 30 fold and 60 fold and a hundredfold.
- 1:50And he said, he who has ears to hear, Let Him hear.
- 1:55Lord, give us those ears and we ask that as we come to the
- 1:59second soil that you have taught your people then and taught
- 2:05throughout the centuries and are intended to teach us today.
- 2:09Lord, we want to know where we are and we pray that you would
- 2:13help us by the spirit in Jesus name.
- 2:16Amen. In this Parable, the Lord, Jesus
- 2:21highlights four types of soil, that represent different heart
- 2:25conditions that respond differently to the gospel and to
- 2:29the word of God as a whole. And it's important to remember
- 2:32that the teaching that Jesus gives us here is not designed to
- 2:35describe the unchangeable condition of men's Hearts, as
- 2:40though it was sealed. In that way.
- 2:45But it aims to provoke the listeners to honestly examine
- 2:49themselves and the state of their own souls to say, which
- 2:54one am I? Where do I fit?
- 2:58In other words Jesus description of these categories is a
- 3:01challenge for us to identify which class we fit in and then
- 3:06with the Redemptive hope of making the appropriate
- 3:10repentance to be where we are. Where God wants us to be rather.
- 3:17So that we can bear fruit for his glory Spurgeon.
- 3:20Insightfully said that this Parable defines four classes of
- 3:24here's that are found in every congregation and I amen.
- 3:28That and I say Beyond these four walls, this also describes the
- 3:33types of listeners that are Waiting to receive the seed and
- 3:38we've been commissioned to plant this seed outside of these walls
- 3:41as well. And so you and I last week,
- 3:43heard about the first type of soil, which is really
- 3:47characterized by immediate rejection and disinterest and
- 3:50divine revelation like the paved paths and Jesus day that found
- 3:57themselves around Fields And even through the fields that
- 4:00have been compounded by foot traffic.
- 4:04There are some people who have hardened Hearts towards the
- 4:07truth and have zero receptivity to what God has to say to them
- 4:13the see tries to find a home. It tries to find a place to
- 4:17abide and instead it collides with a stiff ground, it bounces
- 4:22off only for Satan to take it away.
- 4:26Who is always ready to remove any potential influence of the
- 4:30truth? Seeping into your thoughts and
- 4:34your affections He is vicious. And the wicked one is most
- 4:40effective with those who have been callous by in irreverence
- 4:44and by a carelessness, towards spiritual realities.
- 4:49It's amazing when Jesus talks about the first type of soil, he
- 4:52says, in a different gospel account that men trampled,
- 4:56underfoot the seed, and Men Who Trampled Under Foot, which is
- 5:00really symbolic of being irreverent towards the word of
- 5:03God, attract, Satan's cruelty. And yet, Isaiah tells us that
- 5:10those who not trample, underfoot the seed, but who tremble at the
- 5:14word of God. Attract the mercy of God.
- 5:19The second type of soil is our Focus today.
- 5:23And as we will discover quickly, it is much different than the
- 5:25first for many reasons. This group is often referred to
- 5:29as the rocky soil in such individuals have a complex
- 5:33relationship with the truth and it might be you today.
- 5:36So here and listen. Their extreme emotional
- 5:42responses, both positively, and negatively can leave.
- 5:46Even genuine Believers perplexed of whether or not these people
- 5:51actually possess saving Faith or not.
- 5:55But Jesus is clear concerning the rocky soil.
- 5:58They share the same fate as those who have the roadside
- 6:03soil. In other words both are
- 6:05unbelievers. Both will not have eternal life,
- 6:09both are not saved and You and I by the grace of God will come to
- 6:14that conclusion. As we look at three things
- 6:19pertaining to this type of soil and the first one is how the
- 6:23rocky soil receives the seed. And from there we will look at
- 6:27how the rocky soil relates to the seed.
- 6:33And finally, we will discover why the rocky soil.
- 6:37He rejects the seed so how it is received how it is related and
- 6:44finally why it is ultimately rejected.
- 6:48And so let's come together to verse 5 of Mark, chapter 4 to
- 6:51look at the receiving of the seed from this type of heart and
- 6:55verse 5, we read other seed fell on Rocky ground where it did not
- 6:59have much soil and immediately Mark loves that word and
- 7:03immediately it sprang up since it had no depth of soil.
- 7:08Unlike the first kind of soil which was unresponsive the rocky
- 7:11ground promises a measure of openness.
- 7:15According To Jesus, his own interpretation, the presentation
- 7:18of the Gospel is met with warm exuberance.
- 7:22Such recipients do not put up a fight.
- 7:24They don't, they don't have any resistance against what is being
- 7:28said by the preacher, by the friend who is sitting them down
- 7:30to give them saving knowledge instead.
- 7:33They are quick to absorb it there, quick to act upon it.
- 7:40Whatever it Providence has brought their way, they're
- 7:42willing to nod their head. Yes, and embrace it.
- 7:46But the enthusiasm of the rocky heart is not after deep
- 7:51contemplation, of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus
- 7:54Christ. It's just a quick reaction.
- 7:58To the good news, it's good news.
- 8:00And they can recognize that it's good news and it's so good.
- 8:03They don't even hesitate to apply it to their lives.
- 8:08Scroll down with me to mark for 16.
- 8:11And these are the ones. Now, this is Jesus Exposition
- 8:14his expounding of the rocky soil.
- 8:18And these are the ones sown on Rocky ground, the ones who when
- 8:21they hear the word immediately receive it with joy.
- 8:26So both in the parable and in the explanation, the Lord
- 8:29emphasizes. How there are those who
- 8:31demonstrate a sudden, an exhilarating profession of faith
- 8:36and from the outside to both the sower and on Lookers, this, this
- 8:41kind of rapid growth would even be Dean Supernatural.
- 8:48There's an instant springing up there is this rapid acceleration
- 8:54and it can give that kind of impression just like somebody's
- 8:57immediate response to the Urgent call to being saved by Christ.
- 9:04But what would seem to be a supernatural work?
- 9:07Is in fact, the the fruit of a shallow heart Since this type of
- 9:12soil lacks the depth necessary to consider all of the
- 9:17implications of what it means to say, yes to Jesus.
- 9:22There's concern and here is where I want to say something
- 9:24extremely important that none of us can afford to forget and it
- 9:28is, this excitement is not the distinctive Mark that someone
- 9:33has been born again. That is not to say that emotions
- 9:40that are coupled with a genuine confession.
- 9:45Is always suspect of superficiality.
- 9:49But it does mean that emotionalism alone is no
- 9:53qualifier of genuine conversion. A flood of Tears or a wide
- 10:01glistening smile is no sure sign that somebody has been saved by
- 10:06Jesus. Hebrews 65 and you don't have to
- 10:09turn there. Warns us, that it is possible
- 10:12for a person to taste the goodness of the word of God and
- 10:18to Fall Away into Oblivion. To never repent again.
- 10:25You know, what's so interesting. When you look at this, this is
- 10:28really the only Parable that emphasizes emotion.
- 10:31And when you come down to verse 20 of Mark, for where Jesus
- 10:34describes the fertile soil, the good soil, the soil, that
- 10:37actually produces fruit. There's something missing look
- 10:41at verse 20 of Mark for quickly, but those that were sewn, on the
- 10:45good soil, are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear
- 10:50fruit. 30 fold and 60 fold and a hundredfold.
- 10:54Did you catch it? It, he who hears the word and
- 10:57accepts it. There's no mention of
- 10:59extravagant emotion here. There's no mention of
- 11:03overwhelming reaction. All we see here is an Earnest
- 11:08acceptance of the truth. After an honest and clear
- 11:11assessment of what they are signing up for And if emotions
- 11:16are aroused along with a genuine, exception and a sober,
- 11:22Judgment of what it means to be saved.
- 11:24Then praise God, let the tears flow, and let the laughter of
- 11:30Liberation ReSound into the heavens.
- 11:34But to look at somebody who has simply been stirred by strong
- 11:38emotion and deemed them as redeemed is dangerous, for many
- 11:43reasons, and more importantly, for that person whose foundation
- 11:47in the faith is ready to betray them.
- 11:49Eventually, There's something worth mentioning here.
- 11:54Also before we move on and it is this, although no sower can ever
- 11:59control the outcome of what happens to the CDC.
- 12:03The Sowers job is just to broadcast it and to scatter it
- 12:08and wherever it falls. It is not his duty to analyze
- 12:12where the seed will go. That's God's job.
- 12:16There is no control on the part of the deliver of the truth.
- 12:19Nonetheless, there is a responsibility that the so er,
- 12:23has particularly with this kind of heart posture.
- 12:28And it is to be careful not to do things for the sake of quick
- 12:35results. Our Evangelistic efforts as a
- 12:40church as individual. Believers must be protected from
- 12:44sharing in the guilt of those who will accept the gospel in
- 12:48the shallow way. How is that possible?
- 12:50How can I, as a sower, share the guilt of the person who receives
- 12:54the gospel in a shallow away. Very easy.
- 12:57Give it in a shallow way. Give the gospel in a shallow way
- 13:01and you share in the guilt. This soil is uniquely
- 13:07characterized by emotionalism. Then if that is the case, you
- 13:12and I have to resist the temptation of manipulating our
- 13:15presentation, for the sake of people, making a decision for
- 13:20the moment and not for a lifetime.
- 13:24And there are many ways this can be, but I think one of the most
- 13:26criminal schemes of bringing this about is by tampering with
- 13:30the substance of the seed. So that it can be more easily
- 13:34accepted. And you and I are going to learn
- 13:38in a moment. The reason why this c will be
- 13:40rejected is because of future tribulation and trials.
- 13:44So here's how the sneaky strategy goes.
- 13:47If it is going to be trials and persecution and difficulty,
- 13:53that's going to cause people to be turned off by the gospel.
- 13:56Then what do we do to make people accept it with with
- 13:59immediacy? Well, don't mention that stuff.
- 14:03Don't mention it. Don't tell people.
- 14:05They're going to suffer for Christ.
- 14:07Don't tell people. It's going to come at a cost.
- 14:10Don't tell people that they are accepting a new kind of Burden
- 14:15though. It is light is a burden, still
- 14:18don't talk about how bearing, the name of Jesus will come with
- 14:22different price. Unfortunately, this is exactly
- 14:26what many Ministries are doing. They are cancelling out, certain
- 14:30ingredients of the Gospel so that it can be more widely
- 14:34accepted to the detriment of those who accept it.
- 14:38And this is extremely dangerous. And what's the goal for it?
- 14:41Because we want to see things happen.
- 14:43Now, right now, We want to boast in the numbers of our
- 14:48attendance. We want to boast in our building
- 14:50project so that we can host. The crowds of people who come we
- 14:54want to. We want to tell people in our
- 14:55newsletters and and then and compare ourselves to other
- 14:59Ministries and look how many baptisms.
- 15:00We had over one weekend and look how many people confess Christ
- 15:03at our event and it's all manufactured Revival.
- 15:08It's man-made. What they are really doing, is
- 15:12setting up people for failure because when persecutions do
- 15:15come and they will, they won't have the root system to keep
- 15:19them grounded, and they will wither away.
- 15:23In Philippians 1:29, Paul says for it has been granted to you
- 15:27that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him
- 15:31but also suffer for his sake and Paul's mind believing in Jesus
- 15:36Christ is a very close neighbor to suffering.
- 15:40They're Inseparable. It's part of the package.
- 15:44If you are going to follow Christ and enjoy the Assurance
- 15:48of your salvation, then you also must endure suffering for Christ
- 15:53as you await your Redemption. And suffering is not something
- 15:58that we share as a scare tactic or as a reverse psychology.
- 16:02Now it is a badge of honor. It is a privilege to suffer for
- 16:07Christ because he's infinitely, worthy to not just be believed
- 16:10on but too. suffer for So if you're going to believe in
- 16:15Paul's mind, in that same sentence, you want to believe,
- 16:17well, you're going to suffer, your flesh is going to suffer.
- 16:23Different parts of your social life will suffer.
- 16:27And in the world's eyes, you will look like a fool for
- 16:29following Jesus and 2022. But he is worthy.
- 16:35So if you and I want to minimize the production of shallow
- 16:39salvations in our midst, then all we have to do is have a firm
- 16:44conviction that we will teach and preach the whole counsel of
- 16:46God. And leave the results to God
- 16:49Alone. Just leave it to The Sovereign
- 16:52working of the Holy Spirit. And if anybody would say yes to
- 16:57the gospel and then Fall Away. Then, at least we will have a
- 17:00clear conscious to know that we offer the whole counsel of God.
- 17:05Which brings me to this important aspect.
- 17:08Jesus is not teaching her. That some will have a shallow
- 17:10salvation experience because of the solar was shallow and his
- 17:13delivery. The solar receives, no blame in
- 17:18all of this Parable. He is a faithful Steward who
- 17:22gives the true seed and as you heard last week, let me
- 17:27emphasize it again. The issue here is not with the
- 17:30seed, it's with the soil. And so, what that means is, even
- 17:35if you and I preach the whole counsel of God and preach the
- 17:40pure gospel. You're still going to have
- 17:43people like this. You're still going to have
- 17:46shallow soil, to deal with. Which now brings me to the
- 17:52second Point. Not just the reception of the
- 17:54seed, but The relationship with the seed.
- 17:58What's remarkable about this group?
- 17:59Of Heroes is not just a joy that they show at the beginning?
- 18:03It's how they continue to enjoy it.
- 18:08It's possible that while I've been preaching in the past few
- 18:10minutes here that people certain individuals have come to mind
- 18:14that really fit this description.
- 18:17Maybe even people that you have brought to a service or you have
- 18:20brought to an event that, you know, and knew that was going to
- 18:23preach the gospel. And you were praying that
- 18:25something would happen to that, lost loved one and to your
- 18:28astonishment, when the call went out, here is your friend, here's
- 18:32your sibling, here's her your cousin, your father, your
- 18:35mother, here they are. And with delight.
- 18:37And Eagerness they say yes? Only to never show up to church
- 18:41again. Only to not show an iota of
- 18:44interest in growing in their faith.
- 18:46In fact, they went they went back to the very same thing.
- 18:48They were in before that evening service. and as much as that as
- 18:54a regular occurrence which is unfortunate heartbreaking, this
- 18:57is not the type of person that Jesus is primary describing in
- 19:01this Parable, and I'll prove that to you, you have to come to
- 19:04Matthews version and Matthew 13:20 to see it in Matthew 13,
- 19:08verse 20 and 21, Jesus tells us how this kind of soil relates to
- 19:16the seed. And Matthew 13:20 Matthews
- 19:24before mark. Ask for what was sown on Rocky
- 19:29ground. This is the one who hears the
- 19:31word and immediately receives it with joy.
- 19:34Very similar to Mark verse 21 yet.
- 19:37He has no root in himself but indoors for a while that's scary
- 19:43stuff that's scary stuff but indoors for a while and when
- 19:49tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word
- 19:53immediately, he falls away. Luke's version would say that
- 19:57they believe for a while. Matthew says they endure for a
- 20:02while and indoor is important because it implies something
- 20:05more than just verbal adherence. There is a level of steadfast
- 20:09commitment. That's on display with this kind
- 20:12of soil. There is a practical follow-up
- 20:16after the initial impassion 'it confession, And such people
- 20:21might get baptized. They will gladly sit under sound
- 20:26teaching, they will regularly partake of the Lord's table and
- 20:30here's here's what's even more scary.
- 20:31They can even commit to a local church and serve in different
- 20:35ways. Such people can be found leading
- 20:40teaching cleaning. Serving organizing preparing.
- 20:47And they can function in this way, for weeks, months, and even
- 20:52years, before their faulty salvation is exposed.
- 20:59What this means is that this type of unbeliever is not easily
- 21:02identifiable like the soil on the Wayside.
- 21:06Do you know how that's possible? Look back at verse 21 of Matthew
- 21:0913 before he says they endure for a while.
- 21:13Jesus gives us an important detail.
- 21:15He has no root in himself. I don't know what comes to your
- 21:20mind in terms of imagination when you hear the rocky ground.
- 21:23I'm talking about literal picturing but it's not a bunch
- 21:27of rocks that sit on a bed of dirt.
- 21:31What? Jesus has a mind here.
- 21:32What was common is they was actually sheets of Rock.
- 21:37That was beneath a thin layer of soil.
- 21:42And so it wasn't immediately perceivable.
- 21:44So what would happen is when the seed would be scattered, it
- 21:47would fall into a level of soil that was warm enough and
- 21:52contained enough moisture for it to germinate and decompose and
- 21:57naturally, The Roots would try to reach down to try to
- 22:00establish itself and something more concrete and promising for
- 22:04long-term nutrition only to be rejected by a hard service.
- 22:09But because of that energy, it Versus and goes upward and
- 22:13springs up quickly. All to say that this kind of
- 22:19unbeliever. Is concealed.
- 22:24It's not so obvious. In fact, they look like the
- 22:29legitimate thing. And here's the thing, I was
- 22:34meditating on that and I thought to myself, you know, if I teach
- 22:37this it's possible for people to apply in the wrong way.
- 22:40Those who are genuine Believers and what do I mean by that?
- 22:45We can develop the wrong attitude as a church.
- 22:49The people that we serve with, we can become suspicious about,
- 22:52because we aren't sure if they're truly rooted in Christ.
- 22:55We can even start timing. How long they will last, we can
- 22:58start robbing ourselves of joy and God of his glory, when we
- 23:02see confessions of Christ, or when people display their
- 23:06obedience to Christ through things like water, baptism, and
- 23:08we clap. But we're just like, I don't
- 23:11know, we'll see what happens here.
- 23:14That is a Temptation. We have to avoid because our job
- 23:17as a community of faith is not to prematurely judge, those who
- 23:23will be legit and who will not be legit.
- 23:25The New Testament actually calls us to the contrary to encourage
- 23:29the week to pray for them to support them to embrace them,
- 23:34and listen to this, even when they walk away from the truth.
- 23:37According to James to fetch for them.
- 23:40And to bring them back from wandering, to save, his soul
- 23:44from death. So this this Insight is not,
- 23:48it's not something to encourage us to be skeptical all the time
- 23:52to the point where we distance ourselves less, we continually
- 23:55set ourselves up for disappointment, disappointments
- 23:59will come, but it's okay to rejoice and believe because love
- 24:03hopes for the best, love believes the best.
- 24:08So, don't let this stifle with. Your excitement for God, working
- 24:14in people. And here's the thing.
- 24:18It is not your duty or mind to discern a predict someone's
- 24:21status in Christ because Jesus tells us in this Parable that it
- 24:25will eventually be revealed without your participation or
- 24:27mine. Have you ever heard of Charles
- 24:32blondin? I haven't before yesterday.
- 24:39And you won't hear of that name unless you are a passionate
- 24:44historian concerning tightrope-walking, Charles
- 24:48blondin was the greatest tightrope Walker in all of human
- 24:52history and one of his greatest achievements was in 1859 when he
- 24:57dared to be the first man to walk on a tightrope that
- 25:01stretched across the Raging Waters of the Niagara Falls.
- 25:06As you can imagine a great crowd from both Canada and the United
- 25:09States gathered to witness this. Fearless Soul effortlessly
- 25:13across the northern border, not just once but multiple times and
- 25:17death-defying fashion, blond and gave his audience a show that
- 25:21they would never forget, because he would do this several times.
- 25:24And every single time he would challenge himself further
- 25:26keeping his fans in suspense. And so at some points, he would
- 25:31blindfold himself and he would walk without being able to see
- 25:36as he suspended over. The mighty Waters of the Niagara
- 25:43Falls and other times he would do so with stilts, those wooden
- 25:46little poles that extend you above the ground and he would,
- 25:48he would balance himself with these sticks while holding on,
- 25:51and he would cross and he would get creative at one point.
- 25:54He actually put a small stove on his back, came to the center of
- 25:58the rope and he cooked an omelet.
- 26:03And you can imagine how the people watching were holding
- 26:06their breath with absolute silence in the atmosphere.
- 26:11Only to be interrupted with Applause.
- 26:14That was perhaps louder than the Falls when he would make it
- 26:17through. Finally, at one point.
- 26:22Charles decided to push a wheelbarrow across Niagara Falls
- 26:26on that rope. And as he turned to his devoted
- 26:30fans who sang his Praises Charles noticed, one particular
- 26:35man, who was, especially excited.
- 26:38And so he looks at him and he says, sir, do you believe that I
- 26:41can push someone in this wheelbarrow across the falls?
- 26:47And this man without hesitation said, yes you can do it, of
- 26:51course you can and with a prepared response Charles asked
- 26:56him then get in And what do you think the answer was from this
- 27:03crazed fan? Who expressed his great faith in
- 27:06Charles with the same speed and strengthen that?
- 27:10Yes, he gave a hearty no way. That is the quality.
- 27:21Of faith that Jesus is describing with the rocky soil.
- 27:26People in the audience who testified saying I love him, I
- 27:29believe him, I will serve him. I will follow him until a
- 27:34personal test comes their way. Like that man who was buzzing
- 27:40with admiration and couldn't keep still at the sight of this.
- 27:47Fearless individual. This tightrope walking history
- 27:51maker Everything changed the moment that he realized that his
- 27:55confession can possibly cost him something.
- 28:01Look again here at Matthew 13 to understand what it is, that
- 28:04causes rejection of the seed. Matthew 13:20, but look at verse
- 28:1021. He has no root in himself but
- 28:15indoors for a while. And when tribulation or
- 28:19persecution arises on account of the word immediately, he falls
- 28:25away. Notice immediately.
- 28:27He falls away. So, immediately he receives it
- 28:30and he is just as quick to reject it.
- 28:35And what this tells us is that and enthusiastic unbeliever can
- 28:39blend in the crowd of the children of God as long as he's
- 28:44able to exercise his shallow faith without intimidation or
- 28:49criticism. Such a man is willing to ride
- 28:53the wave of faithfulness as long as he is being supported by the
- 28:59clear, sky of social ease and favor shining upon him.
- 29:06But the moment he feels the chill of gray clouds,
- 29:09overshadowing him. and the drops of persecution touching his
- 29:15sensitive skin. He's quick to get to the shore
- 29:19of compromise and take cover. He can't help, but recant.
- 29:25He can't help but say I didn't sign up for this.
- 29:29Persecution on account of the word is the key verse.
- 29:32The key phrase persecution is, the defining moments that
- 29:37distinguish between the authentic and the almost
- 29:40authentic. And this is just one example of
- 29:44why we don't say that. Someone lost their salvation
- 29:49when after even months and years of apparently walking with them
- 29:53because this Parable is just one of many proofs that that person
- 29:56wasn't safe to begin with. It was shallow.
- 30:01It seemed to look real until the test came proving that it wasn't
- 30:07real to begin with. And that's why what we're seeing
- 30:14in history. Let me go on a little bit of a
- 30:15tangent here. What we're seeing in history
- 30:18today, the fact that our politics are becoming more and
- 30:22more about morality. The fact that our popular
- 30:27culture now is as making defining statements and
- 30:31Declarations of what is righteous and what is wrong?
- 30:36As much as it is proof of the last days, it is also a sifting
- 30:41work of The Sovereign God over his church.
- 30:45So all these things that we're seeing right, what the Supreme
- 30:47Court did with abortion and all this stuff that's happening,
- 30:51you're saying, well, why is it happening?
- 30:53And it would be it'd be wrong to just limited to the fact that
- 30:56we're headed towards a culmination of the age.
- 30:58It's more than that. The Lord is purifying those who
- 31:01profess his name. And that's what we're feeling
- 31:05the heat a little bit and workplaces that are asking you,
- 31:08you better choose your pronouns and you better write them in
- 31:11your emails and you better stand by this narrative.
- 31:15That's what we're starting to see this.
- 31:16Now, this is now coming close to home.
- 31:19And you're wondering, why is it happening?
- 31:21Well, because God is allowing it to happen.
- 31:24And it's going to reveal those who are true to him and those
- 31:27who were just excited about him when all was well.
- 31:33It was easy to be a Christian in America.
- 31:37In the 50s 60s, early or even earlier than that, it's getting
- 31:41increasingly more difficult to associate with Christ and that's
- 31:45nothing short of God. And his work to reveal.
- 31:49True faith. And to expose counterfeit
- 31:54conversions. Luke adds another detail of why.
- 32:00It is that some who have rocky soil will turn away.
- 32:03So go to Luke's version and 8:13.
- 32:09And Luke 8:13. And the ones on the Rock are
- 32:20those who when they hear the word receive it with joy.
- 32:24Notice every single Gospel writer except for John tells us
- 32:30that they receive it with joy. But these have no root they
- 32:36believe for a while. And in time of testing Fall
- 32:39Away, testing is a broader word than just persecution or
- 32:43tribulation according or because an account of the word.
- 32:47So what you have here is that Luke is saying by the spirit,
- 32:50people don't just abandon sound Doctrine.
- 32:54And discipleship, because of fear of social scorn know, there
- 32:57are people who will change course because of a variety of
- 33:02difficult trials. That are painful that persuade
- 33:05them to ultimately reject the Redeemer and say, I don't want
- 33:09this. That includes physical material.
- 33:12Emotional relational Financial affliction.
- 33:19All it takes is for some people to abandon ship is for a loved
- 33:22one to get cancer as tragic as that is or to die prematurely.
- 33:32And with the same passion that they said, yes with when it came
- 33:35to that one time, they heard the gospel.
- 33:39With the same level of intensity, they say no.
- 33:45How can this God be good? I will not give him a moment's
- 33:49more of my devotion. All it takes is for people to
- 33:52have prolonged loneliness and that ache seemingly being
- 33:58overwhelming for them. To say, he doesn't hear my
- 34:02prayers, he's not real. This isn't make sense for
- 34:05somebody who is a child of God, I'm not interested anymore.
- 34:12There's so many examples of how there are trials times of
- 34:16testing, where things don't go necessarily to your natural
- 34:23desires. For people to give up.
- 34:29Do you remember how Jesus described trials, Temptations
- 34:32and persecutions and the parable Matthew 3:16 or 1366 rather
- 34:36tells us that Jesus uses the picture of the sun.
- 34:40Now, I don't have a green thumb by any means, I'm not an expert
- 34:45in vegetation, or in planting this man is Pastor Ben has okay.
- 34:50But I know enough about gardening to understand that if
- 34:53a plant is going to grow, its going to need some exposure to
- 34:56rays of light, right? Sunlight So I do understand
- 35:01here. Jesus says that when the Sun
- 35:03rises in my limited understanding of how this works,
- 35:08it's supposed to help the plant. It's supposed to give life to
- 35:12it, but instead, we're told it scorches it until it shrivels up
- 35:17and dies. It's not really a mystery.
- 35:23It's not the son's fault, it's because the plants that grow
- 35:27with this kind of soil lack, the moisture necessary to benefit
- 35:32from the natural light. And so what was intended to grow
- 35:38them ends up killing them? And just like how the son is
- 35:43capable of both giving life or taking life.
- 35:46The same goes with the heat that comes from blazing trials.
- 35:50Over those who profess faith in Jesus.
- 35:54In other words, suffering is a divine's means by which God
- 35:58either confirms genuine Faith or cancels the fake stuff.
- 36:07Why do people suffer what's God's intention with suffering
- 36:10many things? But for the True Believer there
- 36:16in a category on their own that no one else can share.
- 36:19James 1:2 tells us count it all joy.
- 36:22My brothers, when you meet Trials of various kinds of same
- 36:25word that he used in the parable trials when you meet trials,
- 36:30when you meet tests of various kinds for, you know, that the
- 36:34testing of your faith produces steadfastness, The same word is
- 36:39used here, and you know what, the brother of Jesus is saying
- 36:42you can be joyful when you are visited by the fierce heat of
- 36:47difficult Seasons, because if you're the real thing, it's only
- 36:52going to grow you. It's only going to stretch your
- 36:56soul. It's only going to bring you
- 36:58higher. It's only going to strengthen
- 37:00you. But the same object that is
- 37:04willing to give life. Can also shrivel up unbelief,
- 37:12And shallow Faith. You know some people innocently
- 37:16say God allows suffering so that we can prove to him that we have
- 37:19faith. God knows what's already in you.
- 37:23If suffering does anything and it does a lot, it demonstrates
- 37:27to you that you have saving faith.
- 37:32That's why you could count it all joy.
- 37:36You know, I've had many conversations with people who
- 37:38doubt the Assurance of their salvation, but when I've done
- 37:42inventory, of those people who have approached me genuinely
- 37:45concerned whether or not they are saved, I realized something.
- 37:47A lot of them were young. Either young and years or young
- 37:53in their journey in faith with the Lord.
- 37:57And I think there's something there.
- 38:00Because the longer you walk with the Lord, the more you're going
- 38:03to go through. You gonna get some scars, we
- 38:07live in a cruel cold world. And if you're walking according
- 38:10to the plan of God, he will allow things to happen in your
- 38:14life that doesn't feel good. And what's incredible is.
- 38:20You pull through, don't you? Ten years walking with the Lord,
- 38:2515 years, 20 years, 30 years, and I'm sure those who are
- 38:28seasoned Believers here. You have some stories to share
- 38:32You have seen some stuff you've been through some splits in the
- 38:35church. You've probably endured some
- 38:37kind of level of physical suffering.
- 38:39You have watched a loved one die before you.
- 38:44You've lost a job. You've lost lost friends and
- 38:47just one episode after the next and yet.
- 38:50Here you are. You still love him.
- 38:55You still trust him, you still worship Him, you still want to
- 38:57serve him? You still want to meet with him.
- 39:03and so whether you realize it or not, where you are today even
- 39:07though you went through, so much is a testament, Oh, that you
- 39:12have fertile, soil. And at the faith that is in.
- 39:15You is true Faith. It's genuine.
- 39:22It has really regenerated you and kept you.
- 39:26But those who have rocky soil Faith, they don't, they don't
- 39:29have that testimony. They're out the moment that they
- 39:34feel like there is a cost to this thing.
- 39:36They're out the moment, they realize that this is no longer a
- 39:39exciting, this is actually costly.
- 39:41This is actually painful. I didn't really understand all
- 39:45of this. When I said yes, initially.
- 39:50So trials. Remove them and they withered
- 39:56away. But not for the one who has
- 39:59endured. Enduring for a while, is not the
- 40:03same as enduring until the end. But as you continue to walk with
- 40:10the Lord, something happens to your confidence in God's saving
- 40:13work in your life because you go through things and you come out,
- 40:18loving him still I can imagine how this teaching might, cause
- 40:25some people who are hearing to be more shaken to be more
- 40:29assured in their faith. Right.
- 40:30And I understand where that's coming from because when you
- 40:32look at the rocky soil, they look so similar to the genuine
- 40:37Christian. And so questions can be running
- 40:40through your mind. How do I know if my joy is the
- 40:42real thing? How do I know if my testimony
- 40:45when I when I was broken? And so overwhelmed by the love
- 40:50of God, Tailored for me on the cross.
- 40:54How do I know if that was true? How do I know if I'm going to
- 40:58actually stand firm for Christ? When the temperature gets hot,
- 41:02and I actually have to, to say yes and it might cost me this or
- 41:06that or even my own life, how do I know if I won't turn back on
- 41:10him? That's, that's a legitimate
- 41:12concern. And my answer is not
- 41:16philosophical. It's not multiple choice.
- 41:20It's really easy. If those concerns cause you to
- 41:23throw yourself at Christ and beg him to make your roots deep.
- 41:29And be encouraged or you're listening to this Parable
- 41:32correctly. You're hearing, right?
- 41:40You see the rocky soil? Christian has a public display
- 41:44of Faith. The plant is above the bed of
- 41:47soil, but there is a lack of hiddenness.
- 41:52In other words, there is the absence of private Devotion to
- 41:56God, it's just not there. And if it is, it is extremely
- 42:02shallow. There is no communion with God
- 42:06and secret. There is no love and worship for
- 42:08God when you're alone. It's just here.
- 42:13And it's exciting, and it's great.
- 42:15And it's wonderful. And you benefit from other
- 42:18people's moisture. But there isn't a sense of a
- 42:23secret investment in your relationship with God, just like
- 42:27that plant that has very little to work with beyond the naked
- 42:32eye. so, let me say this in love If you're a person here who has
- 42:41a faith that is only seen by those in public, but deep down
- 42:45inside, you know, that you have no depth in your spiritual life.
- 42:50You have. Every reason to be concerned,
- 42:53you do, I'm just being honest with you, you do You have every
- 42:58reason to be worried. That's the point of this
- 43:00parable. Are you shallow, is it real
- 43:03beyond the surface is there evidence of roots and and Roots,
- 43:08going deeper and deeper. And if not, you should be afraid
- 43:13you should. We already saw in the past few
- 43:18years. What has happened to Big Time
- 43:20pastors and churches. When the son of persecution, and
- 43:27tribulation test have arose over our nation.
- 43:32The deafening silence in the Evangelical world, when abortion
- 43:38was overturned was very concerning to me.
- 43:42Very concerning to me. and so, as we prepared to partake, I
- 43:51want to just end the way Peter ended his Second Epistle and
- 43:56just listen to these words, you don't have to turn there.
- 43:59Second Peter 3:17. You therefore beloved knowing
- 44:05this beforehand, take care of that.
- 44:07You are not carried away with the error of Lawless people and
- 44:11lose your own stability. He's talking to Christians.
- 44:18At least professing Christians beloved, don't lose your own
- 44:22stability. but look at Verse 18, but grow You want to know how
- 44:29you can minimize the risk of losing your own stability, Verse
- 44:3318, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and
- 44:36Savior, Jesus Christ. Grow to him, be the glory both
- 44:41now, and to the day of eternity. Amen.
- 44:46Amen. The rocky soil should not be
- 44:52confused with the genuine believer.
- 44:54I think I need to say this and I hope it helps. who does endure
- 44:58trials, but struggles And has intrusive thoughts that are
- 45:04contrary to thoughts of faith and love and Devotion to Christ,
- 45:07that is not the same. You and I will go through
- 45:10challenges and you, and I will have moments even like Jeremiah
- 45:15who said, am I being deceived here?
- 45:18I'm serving you and it's it's just I don't understand.
- 45:21I don't know if I really signed up for this, that's what
- 45:23Jeremiah essentially said and he was still a true servant of God.
- 45:30This kind of soil is so easy to turn on Christ is so quick to do
- 45:37it. So if you're wrestling and
- 45:40you're plowing through and you know down deep inside that he
- 45:46has the words of eternal life and there's nowhere, you can go
- 45:49even though it some nights you feel like I think I want to go.
- 45:57He's with you. And he is for you.
- 46:02And he is near you even in those dark moments.
- 46:10Lord, we thank you. For this word. and we ask that
- 46:20as we come to this table, We would realize.
- 46:25That it is not upon our works. That we have Assurance, we do
- 46:30not rest in our efforts, Lord, we look to these elements and
- 46:35remember that it is what you have done for us.
- 46:38And yes, with joy, we celebrate and yes with excitement.
- 46:45We Revive Our confession of Faith to you and our trust in
- 46:50the finished work of Jesus Christ.
- 46:53Lord help us with the right Hearts.
- 46:56Observe this and may it nourish us a fresh to be strong and
- 47:04secure. In our walk with you.
- 47:09This is our desire and our prayer in Jesus name.
- 47:12Amen.
