- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Happy Wednesday, hump day.
- 0:05We are midway through the week, and I'm really glad that you're
- 0:08joining me on today's podcast episode on In the Stillness.
- 0:12Today's passage is one that does not sugarcoat anything.
- 0:17It is very straightforward, it's convicting, and it calls out
- 0:22what needs to be called out, but in the best way because it
- 0:26points us to real freedom. So with that, let's go ahead and
- 0:30read today's scripture. In first John chapter 3, verses
- 0:344 through 6, anyone who indulges in sin lives in moral anarchy.
- 0:41For the definition of sin is breaking God's law.
- 0:46And you know without a doubt that Jesus was revealed to
- 0:50eradicate sins and there is no sin in Him.
- 0:55Anyone who continues to live in union with him will not sin.
- 1:01But the one who continues sinning hasn't seen him with
- 1:05discernment or known him by intimate experience.
- 1:10OK, these are super weighty and John is direct.
- 1:16There is no Gray area in what he is saying.
- 1:20But something super important to understand is this, that there
- 1:24is a difference between committing a sin and continuing
- 1:28in sin. Committing sin is when you fall,
- 1:33but ultimately it leads you to conviction, confession, and
- 1:38repentance. You turn from it.
- 1:40There is a real fight in you. But continuing in sin is
- 1:46choosing it persistently, habitually, with no real
- 1:50intention or desire to turn away from it.
- 1:54And this is where it gets super, super convicting.
- 1:59You're either killing sin or sin is killing you.
- 2:04There is no neutral ground. Sin is not something that you
- 2:08just manage and control long term.
- 2:11That is the lie and trap. I want us to think about the
- 2:15enemy Satan. He was originally an Angel of
- 2:19light. He had access to God's presence,
- 2:23but he wanted more. He was greedy.
- 2:27He wanted God's glory for himself and pride was his
- 2:31downfall. Proverbs 16 verse 18 says pride
- 2:35comes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
- 2:40So now Satan as the ultimate deceiver.
- 2:43Today He sells us the same lie that you can have both, that you
- 2:49can have your sin and God's blessings at the same time, your
- 2:54flesh and His presence, your way and His grace.
- 2:59But y'all, that is not truth. Sin is like a cancer.
- 3:05It starts on the internal and it spreads.
- 3:09It erodes and hardens your heart.
- 3:12It consumes you. The more that you feed it,
- 3:15because your craving for it actually grows, the more that
- 3:19you give in to that simple desire.
- 3:22So what do we have to do then? We must starve our sin.
- 3:29Just like you wouldn't feed your body something that fuels an
- 3:32illness or disease like a cancer, you wouldn't give it
- 3:36more sugar. You should not feed your life
- 3:39with what fuels sin. And that implies being honest
- 3:43about your environments, your habits, even people that may
- 3:48tempt you to fall. This is not about restriction,
- 3:53guys. It's so much more about
- 3:55protection and about our freedom.
- 3:59Now, here's where that last line of the passage really takes
- 4:03weight. John says that the one who
- 4:06continues sinning has not seen him with discernment or known
- 4:11him by intimate experience. Those words are clearly
- 4:17intentional because it's not just about knowing about Jesus.
- 4:23You can know the truth. You can know right from wrong,
- 4:27good versus evil. Honestly, even people who aren't
- 4:30Christians can have this general sense.
- 4:34But that is different from discernment.
- 4:37Discernment is spiritually seeing Jesus clearly for who He
- 4:41is, and it's also different from intimate experience actually
- 4:47knowing him in a real and personal relationship.
- 4:51That's where everything changes. We see in second Peter one verse
- 4:573, it says that God has already given us everything we need for
- 5:02life and godliness through the knowledge of him.
- 5:07So it's through truly knowing the person of Jesus, not just
- 5:12receiving information but investing in a relationship,
- 5:16that we are truly given the ability to live differently.
- 5:21Meaning Christian living is not just a higher standard that
- 5:25we're trying to reach in our own strength.
- 5:28It is a transformed life that flows from truly seeing him and
- 5:33truly knowing him. So if someone is just continuing
- 5:38in sin without authentic conviction, without repentance,
- 5:44John is saying that the issue is not just behavior, it's a heart
- 5:49issue. Because when you fully see Jesus
- 5:53and know Him, when you really encounter Him, you don't want to
- 5:59stay the same. And that ties into everything
- 6:02else. It translates because God's law
- 6:06and His commands, they were never meant to save us.
- 6:09They actually reveal how incapable we are and how
- 6:13desperately we need a Savior. That is why Jesus came.
- 6:18John says He was revealed to eradicate sins.
- 6:22So not just some of your sin, all of your sin.
- 6:26He is the perfect sacrificial lamb who fulfilled everything
- 6:31that the Old Covenant in the Old Testament pointed to.
- 6:36Because of Jesus, we are brought near to the Father by His blood.
- 6:42So you are not stuck in your sin.
- 6:46There is available freedom and healing for absolutely anything,
- 6:52whether that is addiction, mental and emotional struggles,
- 6:56emotional wounds, whatever it is.
- 7:00The lie is that this is just how I am.
- 7:04But that is not what Jesus died for.
- 7:07You are either free or you're not.
- 7:13I felt this so strongly because as I was thinking about that,
- 7:18think about a person who has been set free.
- 7:22They do not go back to the prison that they were rescued
- 7:25from just to hang out there for fun.
- 7:29Why would they? They know what it actually felt
- 7:34like. They know the darkness.
- 7:36They know the hopelessness. So why do we sometimes try to go
- 7:42back to the very pit that Jesus pulled us out of?
- 7:46Psalm 40 talks about how the Lord lifts us out of the miry
- 7:50pit and sets our feet on solid ground.
- 7:54So why do we return? John connects us back to abiding
- 8:00remaining in Christ, and we've been talking a lot about that in
- 8:04previous episodes. He says if in him there is no
- 8:08sin, so abiding in him means that we are not continuing in
- 8:15sin. And let me just say this
- 8:17clearly. You cannot continue in sin and
- 8:21continue in Christ simultaneously.
- 8:25Now, that doesn't mean we'll never mess up.
- 8:28Grace is real and forgiveness is real.
- 8:32But there is a distinction between falling and living in
- 8:37it. When you stay in sin, you stay
- 8:42in a cycle of conviction that eventually turns into
- 8:46condemnation, and condemnation distorts how you see God.
- 8:51It affects your prayer life because you stop approaching him
- 8:55with that same confidence. It affects your time reading the
- 8:59Bible because the Bible is living and active and it
- 9:04corrects you and rebukes you so you're not going to want to face
- 9:08it. And it affects how you love
- 9:10others because you're so preoccupied in your own cycle of
- 9:14sin, you start justifying it instead of walking in freedom.
- 9:21But Romans 81 says there is therefore no condemnation for
- 9:27those who are in Christ Jesus. And when you truly see Jesus for
- 9:32who he is and you understand, you come to a revelation of what
- 9:36he has done. You begin to know him
- 9:39personally. That is what leads to
- 9:41repentance. Not just saying sorry, but
- 9:45actually turning wanting to live in a way that authentically
- 9:50honors Him. So let's just pause and ask
- 9:54ourselves honestly, do I truly see Jesus?
- 9:59Do I actually know Jesus? And if you want to stay in sin,
- 10:06it's worth asking why. Let's get to the bottom of it.
- 10:12Don't just avoid it. Do you want life or do you want
- 10:17death? Do you want reconciliation with
- 10:20God or do you want to live in opposition to Him?
- 10:25Have you truly received a revelation of His grace and does
- 10:29your life actually reflect it? The bottom line is, what matters
- 10:36more to you? Living for God and for freedom,
- 10:41or living for yourself and really in bondage?
- 10:46These are real questions, but they are ones that are necessary
- 10:52in order to reach real freedom. So let's go ahead and close out
- 10:56in prayer. Dear God, thank you for your
- 11:02truth, even when it hits hard and it is direct.
- 11:08Thank you that you don't just leave us where we are, but you
- 11:12call us into a real relationship with you.
- 11:16I pray that we would not just know about you, but that we
- 11:21would truly see you with discernment and know you through
- 11:26intimate experience. God, reveal anything in our
- 11:31hearts that is not from you and would you supply us with
- 11:35strength to turn from sin? Remind us that we up everything
- 11:42we need through knowing you to live a godly life.
- 11:46As it says in Second Peter 13. Would you help us to walk in the
- 11:51freedom that you have freely given us?
- 11:54We are yours and we are here. We exist to honor you God.
- 12:02We pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 12:06OK y'all, that's today's episode.
- 12:08I know it was a lot. There's a lot to sit with, but I
- 12:12pray that the Lord would just continue teaching you things,
- 12:15revealing things to your heart, and that you would grow in
- 12:19deeper intimacy with the Father. I will see y'all on the next
- 12:23episode.
