Latest / Armstrong & Getty One More Thing / ...And Then The Stabbing Starts
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, we've all been there.
- 0:01Speaker 2: You're out to dinner with friends and the check comes
- 0:03Speaker 2: and you're trying to figure out how to split up
- 0:05Speaker 2: the bill, and then the stabbing starts.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's one more thing. I'm strong and Getty one more thing.
- 0:15Speaker 2: So before we get to that, update on a story
- 0:17Speaker 2: we talked about during the Armstrong and Getty radio show
- 0:20Speaker 2: the other day, I just saw so it's a second
- 0:23Speaker 2: day of Technology Week at the White House, whatever that means,
- 0:27Speaker 2: and I just saw Milania walk into the West Wing
- 0:32Speaker 2: with a robot at her side. Both came walking down
- 0:35Speaker 2: this long red carpet, and it reminded me, have any
- 0:39Speaker 2: of you yet had an interaction with one of these
- 0:41Speaker 2: really good robots? I told this story from a couple
- 0:44Speaker 2: of years ago when I did has anybody else had
- 0:46Speaker 2: an interaction with a top notch robot?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I have not, No, No.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I did it at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: this is now two to three years old, and I'm
- 0:56Speaker 2: sure it's way better now than it was then.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I don't know if it was top notch, but I
- 1:00Speaker 3: had a robot deliver my sushi not long ago.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah, did it knock on the door or were you
- 1:06Speaker 2: at a restaurant.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I was at a restaurant. It came to the table
- 1:08Speaker 3: and its little arms went out and had chopsticks in
- 1:11Speaker 3: one hand, and then this tray came out and I
- 1:13Speaker 3: took my plate and.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got a We've got a restaurant in my
- 1:16Speaker 2: town that's had a robot like that for a while.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It's an R two D two looking thing, and it's
- 1:20Speaker 2: basically a tall rumba that they put stuff on a
- 1:23Speaker 2: tray and it's it's yeah, either is.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It a look or is it like a labor saving device?
- 1:28Speaker 2: It looks it seems like a gimmick in this in
- 1:30Speaker 2: the case of mine.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, And then there was a tip line on my receipt.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I thought that was interesting anyway.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that it just it didn't do much, but it's
- 1:38Speaker 2: oh my god, they've got a robot. But the robot
- 1:41Speaker 2: that I talked to with the Sphere, I think it
- 1:42Speaker 2: was one of Tesla's well, had that very humanoid look.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I don't know why they've decided they need to make
- 1:48Speaker 2: them look like people, but it had eyes in the
- 1:50Speaker 2: mouth and it talked and it took questions and talked
- 1:52Speaker 2: to people. Crowd gathered around, where are you from, and
- 1:55Speaker 2: then you tell them and say, oh cool, I love
- 1:57Speaker 2: Oklahoma this time of year. It's kind of hot, isn't
- 1:59Speaker 2: it Botwood Sadia or whatever? And it was. It was creepy,
- 2:03Speaker 2: delicious but excellent, great plains weather knowledge.
- 2:08Speaker 3: If I'm remembering properly, you also thought it was hot.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Oh that's right, it was a chicken. It was kind
- 2:12Speaker 2: of hot. Wow, pretty shapely. And a robot just walked
- 2:18Speaker 2: out with Malania too. So I haven't encountered one recently.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I'll badly all have one in our workplace. It won't
- 2:24Speaker 2: be too long there'll be one walk in the halls
- 2:27Speaker 2: taking paperwork around, doing stuff.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So I'm sure these studies have been done, But I
- 2:32Speaker 1: find myself wondering because of the whole Uncanny Valley effect
- 2:36Speaker 1: where people are turned off freaked out by something that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: almost human, then why do we do it well right exactly?
- 2:44Speaker 1: And I remember, like going back to the Twilight Zone
- 2:47Speaker 1: would have episodes where somebody would be revealed to be
- 2:51Speaker 1: an alien or something. What freaked out? Was there? Almost
- 2:54Speaker 1: human but little twist on there. So I'm sure they've
- 2:57Speaker 1: done the studies. If I'm buying a mobile computer that
- 3:03Speaker 1: has some mechanical abilities. I don't automatically need it to
- 3:08Speaker 1: look like a human being. No where did that come from?
- 3:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I don't know why they think they need to have
- 3:13Speaker 2: them walk on two legs, which you know, some complication
- 3:17Speaker 2: to enter into it, as opposed to if you had
- 3:18Speaker 2: three legs, it'd be more stable. I don't know why
- 3:21Speaker 2: they decide to make it so human like. It must
- 3:25Speaker 2: be something with the marketing or something.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Because they're counting on us and like interacting with.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It, sexing them up.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Or is it just that in science fiction, robots have
- 3:35Speaker 1: always been portrayed as as humanoid, might be physical fight
- 3:39Speaker 1: I don't there's got to be an answer to that question, though.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'd kind of like something that's clearly not a human
- 3:46Speaker 1: like I Lost in Space robot. I mean it kind
- 3:49Speaker 1: of had a human ish look. I don't know what
- 3:53Speaker 1: that'd be the danger Will Robinson?
- 3:55Speaker 2: That one kind of like the tin Man from Wizard
- 3:57Speaker 2: of Oz, more.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Like that little bit, But yeah, this is that robot.
- 4:01Speaker 1: It had two legs, but it was on a wheelbase.
- 4:04Speaker 1: It had like hose arms that would you know, do
- 4:08Speaker 1: more or less army things. But you'd never turn around
- 4:10Speaker 1: and think oh my god, that was a I thought
- 4:12Speaker 1: that was a human right.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I don't.
- 4:15Speaker 2: No need for a face at all, No need for
- 4:17Speaker 2: a face at all, let alone two eyes.
- 4:20Speaker 1: No have a face. My toaster oven doesn't have a face,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and I'm fine. Yeah, so I don't. I don't know
- 4:26Speaker 1: the answer to that.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna do some research on it, or if there's
- 4:30Speaker 2: some smart AI person, I could get a question too,
- 4:32Speaker 2: because I would like to know why they've decided to
- 4:34Speaker 2: do that. It's obviously decision, particularly the face. That's a
- 4:37Speaker 2: good point, Katie, the other ones. Maybe you could make
- 4:40Speaker 2: the argument. I don't think it's true though, that two
- 4:43Speaker 2: legs are the If you're going to design some sort
- 4:45Speaker 2: of moveable piece of technology, I don't think you would
- 4:50Speaker 2: choose two legs as the ultimate design.
- 4:52Speaker 3: No.
- 4:54Speaker 1: It obviously has its advantages, but I think four legs
- 4:59Speaker 1: would be a lot better.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean judging a strong base with wheels, Yeah yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 3: yeah yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 1: AnyWho, more human they look, the more they creep me out.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, right, yeah, exactly, We're built that way, and so
- 5:14Speaker 2: don't give it eyes in a mouth and a nose
- 5:17Speaker 2: and boobs like the one that I saw in Las Vegas.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Because then Jack gets tempted, you know, huh.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, you can't turn off your instincts.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I should have asked that it seems from the way
- 5:26Speaker 2: your shaped that you have boobs which are generally designed
- 5:30Speaker 2: to provide milk to an infant. Are you going to
- 5:32Speaker 2: have an infant robot that feeds on your boob like structures?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Do you lactate? Yeah? I should have asked that what
- 5:40Speaker 1: cup size are you? What size would you want? And
- 5:45Speaker 1: then you say the size they get bigger exactly.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Or if I throw you some beads, will you lift
- 5:52Speaker 2: up your carbon fiber cover and.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Show me those things? Well, they'll always be firm, so
- 5:58Speaker 1: the robots have that going for them.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Okay, to wrap today this. We brought you this story
- 6:05Speaker 2: the other day. Pretty nice restaurant, trendy place in Los Angeles,
- 6:08Speaker 2: brunch on a Sunday. I've seen pictures of the place.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Nice looking neighborhood, nice looking restaurant. In fact, the chef
- 6:16Speaker 2: is ty Bree, a California native, helping blend Southern influences
- 6:20Speaker 2: with the modern high energy atmosphere.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh that's what I'm looking for.
- 6:25Speaker 2: If the high energy atmosphere includes stabbing each other with
- 6:28Speaker 2: broken bottles. I guess that's then they met that.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Well, that's not low energy. Good point.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So you had five women kind of dressed up. I
- 6:36Speaker 2: mean I've seen the pictures of them. They got skirts
- 6:38Speaker 2: on and strappy shoes like you know, middle upper class
- 6:43Speaker 2: women going out for brunch on a Sunday. We've all
- 6:45Speaker 2: seen it. And for some reason, the bill comes and
- 6:50Speaker 2: somehow an argument starts and somebody grabs a knife and
- 6:53Speaker 2: starts stabbing people. And another person, according to the La
- 6:57Speaker 2: Times account of it, broke a bottle over the the
- 7:00Speaker 2: person's head, and then there was stabbing going with the
- 7:02Speaker 2: broken bottle. As we as you do in these situations.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I call that resourcefulness. I don't have a knife within reach,
- 7:11Speaker 1: what can I utilize?
- 7:12Speaker 2: That's a clever Yeah. No information was available on the
- 7:16Speaker 2: relationships to one another. It just looked like friends to me.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Happened the police arrived around five.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That's how I am with my friends. By the way,
- 7:25Speaker 3: just one thing, we all snap and try to kill
- 7:27Speaker 3: each other.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Right, Hey, hey, things got stabby again tonight. I feel bad.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I know you feel bad, by gones, right.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Yeah right, let's try this again next weekend.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Two of the five were booked on felony charges. One
- 7:40Speaker 2: remains in custody, so she must have been the original.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I'm not paying a fifth of this. Took a knife,
- 7:46Speaker 2: stabby stabs as people do, as you do.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Hey, Jim, you stabbed me with a knife. I slashed
- 7:52Speaker 1: you with a bottle. Bill tried to take out John's
- 7:54Speaker 1: eye with a spoon. Can you two shake? Yeah?
- 7:59Speaker 2: All right again. Chef ty Bree is trying to blend
- 8:02Speaker 2: Southern influences with a modern, high energy atmosphere. Maybe the
- 8:05Speaker 2: Southern influences or the duel. I don't know what the
- 8:08Speaker 2: influences are.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Right, Maybe go with a cuisine that doesn't require knives, chef,
- 8:14Speaker 1: at least for a little while.
- 8:17Speaker 2: After the stabbings, the restaurant posted on their Instagram, we
- 8:20Speaker 2: are aware of the incident that occurred earlier today.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm sure they are.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And the situation was beyond our control. I'm sure it was.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I love the spokeshole. I love the official statement, whether
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's government or corporate or this restaurant. Oh oh oh,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it was not within your control. See I was thinking
- 8:40Speaker 1: that it was you know, statistry and get a free
- 8:42Speaker 1: dessert or something today. Thank you for that idiotic statement.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yes, I assumed that the server had come handed her
- 8:51Speaker 2: a knife and said if I were you, I'd stab her.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Turns out it was beyond there was in their control.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Zaia.
- 9:04Speaker 2: The name of the restaurant is known for its dinner
- 9:06Speaker 2: and show concept. The restaurant pairs its menu with music
- 9:09Speaker 2: and private event offerings.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Cool.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Sounds very very nice like a restaurant to me. As
- 9:14Speaker 2: long as nobody stabs you over the bill. God, there's
- 9:17Speaker 2: got to be more details of this story. If this
- 9:20Speaker 2: ends up going to quart or something, we're all going
- 9:21Speaker 2: to learn and that'll be great. Like who said, what?
- 9:25Speaker 2: How did it escalate? I need to know more about this.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I don't think it will.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Yeah, don't.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I'll bet, I'll bet we get details on this.
- 9:35Speaker 1: There's a pretty good conservative da now in LA or
- 9:39Speaker 1: County attorney, whatever his formal title is.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I got to think there was something leading up to
- 9:43Speaker 2: this event, and this is like the final straw. Probably
- 9:46Speaker 2: some drinking, although I've done a lot of drinking with
- 9:51Speaker 2: a lot of people and nobody even came close to
- 9:53Speaker 2: stabbing anybody.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Are you part of a subculture that routinely settles minor
- 9:58Speaker 1: disputes with physical vice? I am not.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Okay, there you go.
- 10:09Speaker 2: That is I would think, you know, maybe all five
- 10:11Speaker 2: weren't involved. It could have been just two or three
- 10:13Speaker 2: that were really involved. It could have been just one.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Really could have been all self defense after the one
- 10:18Speaker 2: nut job.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Right, did you see the video?
- 10:23Speaker 1: No?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Oh, they went, they were, they were, they were all
- 10:26Speaker 3: in it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Oh.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I didn't know why you been holding onto this video
- 10:32Speaker 1: and you guys.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Have been talking about it. I just figured you saw it.
- 10:35Speaker 1: No, describe it, describe it. Uh.
- 10:38Speaker 3: It is five women at this table, and you can
- 10:42Speaker 3: see that the conversation is getting heated and then it
- 10:44Speaker 3: just explodes. Okay, I'll get the video your way.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And uh then do like patrons run over or waiters
- 10:54Speaker 2: or everybody whips their phone out.
- 10:56Speaker 3: A couple of people whip the phone out, and then
- 10:58Speaker 3: you see a couple of weight like try to They're
- 11:01Speaker 3: not really sure because it was chaotic.
- 11:04Speaker 2: As it said on their Instagram page, it was beyond
- 11:06Speaker 2: their control.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Why don't we post this at armstrong ngetdy dot com
- 11:10Speaker 1: so everybody can enjoy the video goodness?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Of course, So was this video from somebody whipped their
- 11:16Speaker 2: phone out or did they have like a camera in
- 11:18Speaker 2: the ceiling in the restaurant.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Doesn't look like this was phone footage, gotcha. I'm gonna
- 11:22Speaker 3: have to find it.
- 11:23Speaker 2: There's nothing that happens in public anymore that somebody doesn't
- 11:25Speaker 2: get a video of it.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You know, you got some bully beating up a little
- 11:29Speaker 1: guy or a woman or something like that. I'm not
- 11:31Speaker 1: videotaping it. I'm gonna do whatever I can do to
- 11:34Speaker 1: help in this situation. I'm breaking out my phone. Yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 1: mutual combat between lunatics.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Probably drunk, biacious, screaming faiths at each other. Yeah, I'm
- 11:49Speaker 2: not getting involved in that. I wonder if they, when
- 11:53Speaker 2: they all settled down, if they thought, you know, that
- 11:55Speaker 2: really got out of hand, don't you think.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I think if you think that, it never would have happened,
- 12:02Speaker 1: You're probably right. If I'm the bus boy as they're fighting,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I just come up and say, excuse me, does anybody
- 12:09Speaker 1: want any more water? Yes? And then just walk away.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Do you want to see the dessert menu?
- 12:13Speaker 1: And he's still hungry?
- 12:16Speaker 3: You've got great specials.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Did you leave room? Well, I guess that's it.
