- 0:00Hey, y'all, this is friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Happy Saturday.
- 0:05I hope that y'all are having a great weekend so far.
- 0:08Thanks for joining me today. We're going to be moving into
- 0:12the book of Third John. We're going to be in verses one
- 0:15to four, and these verses are really just highlighting some
- 0:20things that have been heavy and very prevalent on my heart and
- 0:25in my prayers. So I really enjoyed learning
- 0:28through this passage today and I'm super excited to talk
- 0:31through everything. Let's go ahead and read the
- 0:34verses and then I'll get right into it.
- 0:37From the elder to my dearly loved brother Gaius, whom I
- 0:41truly love. Beloved friend, I pray that you
- 0:46are prospering in every way and that you continually enjoy good
- 0:50health just as your soul is prospering.
- 0:54I was filled with joy and delight when the brothers
- 0:57arrived and informed me of your faithfulness to the truth.
- 1:02They told me how you live continually in the truth of
- 1:05Christ. It is the greatest joy of my
- 1:08life to hear that my children are consistently living their
- 1:12lives in the ways of truth. OK, something that I really
- 1:19admire about this letter is how personal it is.
- 1:23John is writing to Gaius, someone known for his generosity
- 1:28and his hospitality and faithfulness.
- 1:31What stood out to me is how John says whom I love and truth.
- 1:37Now that phrase might just seem like another phrase, but it
- 1:43matters because their friendship and relationship was rooted in
- 1:47Jesus Christ. They were united because of the
- 1:51truth of Christ. John is speaking like a
- 1:55spiritual father here. He clearly loves and deeply
- 1:59cares for Gaius. He's praying for him, rejoicing
- 2:03over him. He wants him to flourish
- 2:05spiritually and physically. And so I think that's such a
- 2:09beautiful picture of what the body of Christ is ultimately
- 2:14supposed to look like. Because as believers, as a
- 2:18family, we are not just random individuals attending church or
- 2:23going through spiritual things. We are supposed to be united and
- 2:29unified in Christ. We are meant to pray for one
- 2:32another, encourage one another, serve each other.
- 2:36John was not only concerned about Gaius knowing the correct
- 2:41theology, he cared about his overall well-being because he
- 2:46genuinely loved him. And so I think in such an
- 2:50individualistic culture that we live in today, we've lost some
- 2:55of this. I've been thinking a lot lately
- 2:58about the aroma I leave behind after conversations or just
- 3:04interactions with friends on the day-to-day.
- 3:07Asking myself, when people leave hanging out with me, do they
- 3:11feel encouraged, refreshed, sharpened, in truth, more aware
- 3:17of Jesus? Or do I leave people drained,
- 3:21negative, critical, or consumed with comparison?
- 3:25That is sincerely become a prayer of mine.
- 3:28Because friendships, conversations, even simple
- 3:32Hangouts, they are meant to point others and ourselves
- 3:36closer to Jesus. So ask yourselves, before you
- 3:41hang out with people, before you just move into the next thing,
- 3:45How can I build someone up? When you walk into a coffee
- 3:49shop, pray that the Lord highlights someone to you or
- 3:53even the barista making your coffee.
- 3:55How can I encourage this person? How can I lovingly show them the
- 4:00truth? Proverbs talks about iron
- 4:03sharpening iron, and it also says that sweet friendships
- 4:07refresh the soul. So that is what walking in truth
- 4:12should produce, not just a Bible knowledge, but a transformed way
- 4:17of loving people. So that's why I love that John
- 4:22celebrates not just what guys believed, but how he lived it
- 4:26out consistently. Truth is not just something that
- 4:31we agree with intellectually. Truth ought to shape the way
- 4:35that we live, think, speak and even steward what God has gifted
- 4:40us. I also really enjoyed seeing how
- 4:44John prayed for guys, his physical health while also
- 4:48addressing the spiritual health. There is a connection between
- 4:52the two and this has become a huge area that God has been
- 4:56refining in me. So I want to go into this.
- 5:00Growing up, discipline around exercise, movement, even eating
- 5:06healthy. It was always instilled in me
- 5:09and I'm so thankful for those good habits.
- 5:13Movement in itself is not bad. It is actually such a blessing
- 5:17and it's a gift because God created our bodies to move, to
- 5:23work, and to serve. I believe somewhere along the
- 5:27way in my own life, what started as stewardship slowly grew into
- 5:33obsession. And instead of exercising to
- 5:36appreciate and celebrate what God created in me, I started
- 5:41doing it because I felt like I had to.
- 5:43It became kind of robotic. I wanted to perfect my
- 5:47appearance. I wanted validation, whether
- 5:50that was over myself or from other people.
- 5:53I wanted to look a certain way. And maybe some of you can relate
- 5:58to part of that too. We oftentimes hear the phrase
- 6:02your body is a temple, and that is literally from the Bible.
- 6:06So it is true, but I think sometimes we can misinterpret
- 6:10what it's actually meaning. Your body is not your identity
- 6:16and it's not going with you into eternity, but it is still a gift
- 6:21from God that you're called to steward.
- 6:23And stewardship looks very different from worship.
- 6:28You see, God created food, and it's meant to be enjoyed, but
- 6:33it's not meant to enslave you. God created exercise to
- 6:37strengthen you, to build you up, to be equipped for the tasks
- 6:42that he gives you, but it's not meant to become idolatry.
- 6:46And God created our bodies with purpose, but we are not to build
- 6:51our entire worth around our image and appearance.
- 6:56So lately what that's looked like practically for me is just
- 7:00asking this question before I workout or before I eat a meal.
- 7:05Am I doing this for the glory of God or for myself?
- 7:09Because Scripture says whether you eat or whether you drink, do
- 7:14it all for the glory of God. So that question, it exposes a
- 7:19lot asking am I moving my body out of gratitude or out of fear?
- 7:26Am I taking care of myself so I can serve God well or so I can
- 7:30control how people perceive me? Am I stewarding my health or am
- 7:36I idolizing it and worshipping it?
- 7:40I really do believe spiritual and physical health are
- 7:43connected, not in a legalistic way, not in a way that's like
- 7:48healthy people or holier, but in the sense that God created us as
- 7:53whole people. If God gave you a beating heart,
- 7:59lungs that breathe, an immune system that works, those are
- 8:05gifts. And we do live in a fallen,
- 8:09sinful world. Some people unfortunately are
- 8:12gonna face illness, disabilities, limitations and
- 8:18that is because sin fractured creation.
- 8:22But even in this reality, life itself, every single day is
- 8:27still a blessing that is worth thanking God for.
- 8:31So I think sometimes we can become so hyper focused on
- 8:35looking perfect, eating perfectly, or performing
- 8:40perfectly that we forget to actually live with a grateful
- 8:44heart. Guys, life is so much bigger
- 8:48than your physical appearance. And another thing I've been
- 8:52realizing is how much our thoughts matter.
- 8:54In this portion too. Scripture talks about being
- 8:58transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 9:00Romans 12/2. So the words that you repeatedly
- 9:05speak over yourself affect you far more than you realize.
- 9:10What your mind agrees with is gonna shape how your body
- 9:14responds. So if you are constantly tearing
- 9:17yourself down, even if that is internally in your thoughts, if
- 9:22you are obsessing over your flaws, comparing yourself, or
- 9:27living in shame, it impacts you spiritually and emotionally.
- 9:33Walking in truth means agreeing with God over yourself instead
- 9:37of every insecure thought in your head.
- 9:41So I think that's why I truly resonated and loved this passage
- 9:46so much. Guys's life reflected truth, His
- 9:51love reflected truth, his hospitality reflected truth, and
- 9:56his consistency reflected truth. Truth changed the way that he
- 10:03lived. So that is the invitation for us
- 10:07too. Not perfection, not obsession,
- 10:12but faithfulness to faithfully continue walking in truth day by
- 10:18day. So I want to leave you all with
- 10:21a few reflection questions before I move into prayer.
- 10:25First of all, what aroma are you leaving behind in your
- 10:29interactions with people? Is it refreshing?
- 10:32Is it building them up or is it tearing them down?
- 10:36Is it condescending? 2 Are you stewarding your body
- 10:41or are you worshipping it #3 What would it look like for you
- 10:46to faithfully continue walking in the truth?
- 10:50This week, let's go to move into prayer.
- 10:56Dear Jesus, thank you for calling us into your family.
- 11:02Thank you for teaching us how to walk in truth, by the way, that
- 11:07we can. Study your life in the Gospels
- 11:09and see how you lived it perfectly, but how you did it
- 11:14gracefully and transparently. I pray that you would help us to
- 11:19become people who refresh, who encourage, who love others well.
- 11:27Would you teach us to steward our minds, to honor our bodies,
- 11:32to live lives in a way that glorifies you instead of putting
- 11:37all the focus on ourselves? Would you renew our thoughts,
- 11:42deepen gratitude within us? Father, I pray that we would
- 11:48faithfully continue walking in truth every single day of our
- 11:52lives. We pray these things in Jesus
- 11:55name, Amen. OK guys, that's today's podcast
- 11:59episode. I hope that this just ministers
- 12:02to your heart in a special way that you can pray and ask the
- 12:06Lord to continue revealing things to you.
- 12:10And I will see you all on the next episode.
- 12:13Have a great Saturday.
