- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Moodey. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick, it was
- 0:17Speaker 1: a crazy atmosphere on the South Side. The White Sox
- 0:21Speaker 1: take two or three. The Cubs won the first one
- 0:25Speaker 1: pretty They pretty much had that one, but the atmosphere
- 0:30Speaker 1: was wild. It seemed like I was not there for
- 0:32Speaker 1: that one, but it seemed like even watching it on
- 0:35Speaker 1: TV that there was that the fans were into it.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Saturday they got out of hand pretty quickly. White Sox
- 0:43Speaker 1: power kind of took over right away, and then Sunday
- 0:47Speaker 1: was just one of those classic games and the fans
- 0:50Speaker 1: were into it the entire time. And let's start there
- 0:54Speaker 1: with some fan interaction, like a pretty big moment Miguel
- 1:00Speaker 1: Argus two men on two outs, Peek Armstrong nearly makes
- 1:04Speaker 1: a play.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I think it's important to.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Set that up with saying like he had no business
- 1:10Speaker 1: making any play on that ball, where it was hit,
- 1:13Speaker 1: how hard it was hit. It was like that he
- 1:17Speaker 1: was even close and had a chance to get a
- 1:20Speaker 1: glove on. It just shows how talented he is and
- 1:23Speaker 1: how good he is, but he nearly made the play,
- 1:26Speaker 1: didn't double for Miguel Vargus. Two runs, score four to
- 1:30Speaker 1: four game, and he's kind of sitting there back to
- 1:36Speaker 1: the you know, to the infield, and and it's it's
- 1:40Speaker 1: right there where like in the outfield the White Sox
- 1:42Speaker 1: have fans. It's I think it's like the dugout bar,
- 1:45Speaker 1: or not the dugout bar.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The bullpen bar.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And and a fan, a woman who I believe was
- 1:54Speaker 1: like like it was an engagement party or something. Some
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think some people had reports on that, uh starts
- 2:01Speaker 1: screaming at him. Uh, and and he had some choice
- 2:05Speaker 1: words back at her. Afterwards after the game, he said
- 2:11Speaker 1: he said she was talking, she was talking stuff and
- 2:13Speaker 1: and he decided to talk back.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Uh.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I mean that that was that was probably the moment
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the series as far as like what what stands
- 2:23Speaker 1: out as as far as like an image from that series.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Oh, without a doubt, I think that is going to
- 2:30Speaker 4: be the the shorthand from this weekend. That will just
- 2:35Speaker 4: kind of go into everyone's uh, you know notebooks.
- 2:40Speaker 2: As kind of a.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Catchphrase to describe the Crosstown series, whether it's you know,
- 2:49Speaker 4: Ozzie Geean Rippin' Wrigley Fields Loopanella going off on Steve Stone,
- 2:57Speaker 4: what was it big Z going after to Derek Lee
- 3:00Speaker 4: in the dugout? Obviously our colleague Aj Persinski was involved
- 3:06Speaker 4: in one of them. And I think Pete versus this
- 3:09Speaker 4: fan will just be part of that sort of endless
- 3:14Speaker 4: loop now. And I was curious what was Pete's demeanor
- 3:17Speaker 4: in the clubhouse afterwards, because he can be unpredictable when
- 3:23Speaker 4: you approach his locker.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, at first he was a little short
- 3:28Speaker 1: with his answers, but I think he you know, he
- 3:31Speaker 1: did not like back away from the questions. He eventually
- 3:35Speaker 1: answered them a little longer form, and and yeah he
- 3:39Speaker 1: was I don't think he was thrilled that they lost
- 3:43Speaker 1: the game. I think that was his primary frustration. He
- 3:48Speaker 1: believed he should have caught that ball, Like I said,
- 3:51Speaker 1: like he, I think we really need to recalibrate how
- 3:55Speaker 1: we watched defense with Pete crow Armstrong out there there
- 3:58Speaker 1: are balls he gets too, he comes close to making
- 4:01Speaker 1: that just shouldn't he shouldn't be close to them, like
- 4:05Speaker 1: it just shouldn't be a play. But he has high
- 4:08Speaker 1: expectations for himself which is great. That's what you want
- 4:10Speaker 1: from a guy like him, And he was disappointed that
- 4:14Speaker 1: he didn't make that play. He didn't like the fans stuff.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We didn't get too deep into. It was just one question,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but I think I think in the moment he was
- 4:26Speaker 1: just like he didn't want to hear that. And he's
- 4:28Speaker 1: not the title like he's gonna say stuff back. That's
- 4:31Speaker 1: just how Pete is. He's not afraid to talk, so
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, I think the other thing that he said
- 4:41Speaker 1: is like he was very he was full of praise
- 4:43Speaker 1: for the White Sox, and I heard that a lot
- 4:46Speaker 1: this weekend, a lot of praise for that team.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Jameson Taiwan, who.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Will talk about later, had a great quote on Murakami
- 4:53Speaker 1: just basically saying, you know, I don't know how twenty
- 4:56Speaker 1: nine other teams passed.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It seems like the.
- 4:58Speaker 1: League just passed him up, like that's a that's a
- 5:01Speaker 1: miss by the league. Certainly seemed that way watching him
- 5:05Speaker 1: this weekend. The rest of it, like, in general, this
- 5:10Speaker 1: offense looks legit, This White Sox offense a lot of
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, there's obviously there's ways you can get him
- 5:15Speaker 1: out and it's a high strikeout group. But between Montgomery, Murakami,
- 5:22Speaker 1: Miguel Vargas, who I mean that trade looks great now
- 5:26Speaker 1: for the White Sox. He looks legit. I mean, of
- 5:32Speaker 1: the three, he's the one that I see like doesn't
- 5:34Speaker 1: strike out, he walks a ton and now is hitting
- 5:37Speaker 1: for power and it plays their base like yeah, like
- 5:42Speaker 1: he seems like this is this is impressive. This is
- 5:45Speaker 1: this is a guy that you know, you can kind
- 5:48Speaker 1: of build around or build with at at minimum some
- 5:52Speaker 1: nice pieces there. And and they they took it to
- 5:54Speaker 1: the Cubs for a couple of games there. They did
- 5:56Speaker 1: not have trouble scoring runs, and I think, uh, open
- 6:02Speaker 1: some eyes for some fan like for some players in
- 6:05Speaker 1: that Cubs clubhouse where they were like, yeah, this team,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, not easy to pitch to, not not easy
- 6:11Speaker 1: to work around in any way. And Pete said he
- 6:14Speaker 1: kind of relates to the group, the bunch of young
- 6:16Speaker 1: guys that are trying to get after it and hungry,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and he understands that mentality and and uh seems like
- 6:23Speaker 1: there's a lot of respect for that group in the
- 6:25Speaker 1: Cubs clubhouse.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 4: If I if I'm following the White Sox, I want
- 6:30Speaker 4: to see how those position players hold up over the
- 6:34Speaker 4: course of one hundred and sixty two games. Can they
- 6:37Speaker 4: keep their pitching like healthy and viable over six months?
- 6:43Speaker 4: You know, can their front office meet the moment at
- 6:46Speaker 4: the trade deadline should it come to that. And then
- 6:50Speaker 4: obviously long term, like this ownership situation is sort of murky,
- 6:56Speaker 4: and I guess you know, it's unconventional, and like will
- 7:01Speaker 4: they eventually like spend to augment what looks like a
- 7:04Speaker 4: pretty nice score, But yeah, they play in the right division.
- 7:09Speaker 2: To hang around.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I think you and I and most people who've interacted
- 7:14Speaker 4: with Will Venable, even somewhat briefly during this time with
- 7:17Speaker 4: the Cubs, have a lot of respect obviously for his resume,
- 7:21Speaker 4: his demeanor, his humble nature, his intelligence, all of those things.
- 7:26Speaker 4: So definitely a big time weekend that felt like the
- 7:32Speaker 4: City Series was back, and I think it was a
- 7:36Speaker 4: you know a little bit of a I don't know
- 7:39Speaker 4: if wake up call a reality check is too strong
- 7:42Speaker 4: a word, but looking at this group of Cubs position players,
- 7:45Speaker 4: obviously very solid one through nine, but right now they're
- 7:48Speaker 4: kind of going through. I mean, Pete has not really
- 7:51Speaker 4: fully launched yet offensively. Alex Regman's fine player, but hasn't
- 7:57Speaker 4: really been a huge difference maker. You know, Dansby Swanson
- 8:01Speaker 4: seems to be going through one of his you're really
- 8:05Speaker 4: cold spells as a as a streaky hitter in general.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I'm assuming you're not too concerned about the offense, but
- 8:13Speaker 4: it doesn't overall, it doesn't look like great at this
- 8:16Speaker 4: particular moment.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, No, they're they're going through it, especially this road
- 8:20Speaker 1: trip at three and six road trip. Outside of the
- 8:26Speaker 1: games that they won, and even in those there were
- 8:31Speaker 1: some there were some moments that you know, they didn't
- 8:35Speaker 1: come through, but like the offense just did not come
- 8:37Speaker 1: through in with runners in scoring position. Uh. I tend
- 8:43Speaker 1: to believe and I've said, probably said this a dozen
- 8:45Speaker 1: times on the podcast. Uh and and Craig Counsel will agree, like, well,
- 8:50Speaker 1: will emphasize this as well. Look, you're those things kind
- 8:54Speaker 1: of go in cycles sometimes and it seems to come
- 8:57Speaker 1: in bunches.
- 8:59Speaker 2: That's what I that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: That's the one weird thing to me about the runners
- 9:02Speaker 1: in scoring position things. It'll go well for like two
- 9:06Speaker 1: weeks and you'll be like, wow, this team just knows
- 9:08Speaker 1: how to come through, and then it just craters. They're
- 9:11Speaker 1: hitting like one eighty something with runners in scoring position,
- 9:14Speaker 1: or they did on this nine game trip, just not
- 9:18Speaker 1: coming through a lot of opportunities and not coming through
- 9:23Speaker 1: in those moments. I think they were two for fifteen
- 9:26Speaker 1: on Sunday, they scored eight runs, you know, and they
- 9:32Speaker 1: lose that game. You're not talking about that if they
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, somehow pull that game off.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You're talking about Michael Gonfordo's clutch hit.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I think there was a game, I want to say
- 9:43Speaker 1: the Saturday in Texas that was just like you can't
- 9:48Speaker 1: like I want to say they were like Oho for
- 9:49Speaker 1: thirteen or something like that. It was like, those are
- 9:52Speaker 1: the types of games that just eat at a team
- 9:55Speaker 1: and drive fans nuts. But I do think that they
- 9:59Speaker 1: have a good enough offense to kind of come through
- 10:02Speaker 1: in those moments. They have players that know how to
- 10:04Speaker 1: come through. I do think Bregman's starting to turn it around.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But the Bush is starting to turn it around. Dansby
- 10:09Speaker 1: Swanson is in a funk deep one Moist is by
- 10:13Speaker 1: a steros. The league is adjusted, He's got he's got
- 10:16Speaker 1: to adjust back. Nico's kind of struggling lately now. I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 1: he was off to such a hot start. May has
- 10:24Speaker 1: been a little bit of a struggle for him. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't think anybody really doubts that Nico's gonna come through
- 10:31Speaker 1: and and and figure it out and get back to
- 10:33Speaker 1: being Nico. But there are some you know, it's just
- 10:38Speaker 1: been a it's been a slog on this road trip.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I don't think the offense is something to be freaked
- 10:45Speaker 1: out about, but you know that's not gonna stop fans
- 10:49Speaker 1: from focusing on the runners and scoring position stuff. Again,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna say like they I think these things swing
- 10:57Speaker 1: wildly over the course of a season, and it tends
- 10:59Speaker 1: to even out. The one weird thing, like I said
- 11:03Speaker 1: to me, is like, it's weird that it sometimes happens
- 11:05Speaker 1: in bunches, and that's when you really focus on it.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Maybe it's a mental thing too, when it does happen
- 11:11Speaker 1: in bunches you get that one hit. Like you know,
- 11:16Speaker 1: the game feels very different if say Suzuki is someone
- 11:19Speaker 1: that's also been in a little bit of a funk.
- 11:21Speaker 1: If say it comes through with two outs in the
- 11:23Speaker 1: bases loaded in the tenth inning, gets a base hit,
- 11:27Speaker 1: kind of blows that game open. We're probably talking about
- 11:30Speaker 1: a different situation as well.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Or if the Cubs execute a pitch here or there,
- 11:36Speaker 4: which we'll get into.
- 11:37Speaker 2: In the next two segments.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, let's take a break and talk a
- 11:41Speaker 1: little bit about some pitching and what's going on there.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 11:49Speaker 5: little bit off the charts expensive. Mint Mobile can get
- 11:54Speaker 5: you started with three months of premium wireless four fifteen
- 11:58Speaker 5: bucks a month.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Are it pretty good like that? The way gas prices
- 12:02Speaker 3: are going up, Scott, We've got to keep more mobile
- 12:04Speaker 3: plan down and mint mobile is your location to keep
- 12:07Speaker 3: your mobile plan down, can add family members. You can
- 12:10Speaker 3: do all that for just fifteen bucks a month.

- 12:16Speaker 5: if you like bougie drinks. All plans come with high
- 12:19Speaker 5: speed data and unlimited talk and text delivered on the
- 12:21Speaker 5: nation's largest five G network. If you like your money,
- 12:24Speaker 5: mint mobile is for you. Shot plans at mintmobile dot

- 12:38Speaker 5: offer for first three months only, then full price plan
- 12:41Speaker 5: options available taxes and fees extra see mint Mobile for details.
- 12:49Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, pitching injuries have obviously piled up, and
- 12:55Speaker 1: that's that's led to a lot of questions. And the
- 12:58Speaker 1: Cubs have done a pretty arkable job of staying afloat.
- 13:01Speaker 1: But I think it's catching up to them right now
- 13:04Speaker 1: and their depth is being tested. And it's not even
- 13:09Speaker 1: the injured players, like the replacements that are causing issues now.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Guys that you thought you could rely on just are
- 13:18Speaker 1: not performing. And one one in particular, who was on
- 13:21Speaker 1: the il. You thought him getting healthy could maybe shake
- 13:24Speaker 1: things up and get him back to being his twenty
- 13:27Speaker 1: twenty five self.
- 13:28Speaker 2: But Phil Mayton, I know, fans quickly.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You know will oh No, they get a guy that
- 13:36Speaker 1: used to be with the Astros, it's you know, it's
- 13:38Speaker 1: a disaster.
- 13:39Speaker 2: It never works for them.
- 13:40Speaker 1: No relievers from the Astros work for them. Mayton's searching
- 13:46Speaker 1: for it right now. He's had some moments where it
- 13:49Speaker 1: looked like he was getting back to, you know, his
- 13:52Speaker 1: best self, but it's not there.
- 13:54Speaker 2: It's there was a.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Really rough game on the road at some point, I believe,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I mean during the Atlanta or Texas series one of those,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and then obviously, a three run shot to Tristan Peters.
- 14:09Speaker 2: His first long ball.
- 14:10Speaker 1: This is not a guy that you know, you expect
- 14:12Speaker 1: to hit home runs, but that was that was a
- 14:15Speaker 1: big blow in this game, obviously, and Mayton was kind
- 14:21Speaker 1: of dejected in the clubhouse, kind of one of those
- 14:24Speaker 1: moments where he's just staring in his locker the whole
- 14:27Speaker 1: time media is in the room. Didn't feel like talking,
- 14:31Speaker 1: which is his right. He's usually very very accessible and
- 14:35Speaker 1: willing to talk. But I think he probably needs a
- 14:38Speaker 1: day to kind of think over these things. And Craig
- 14:40Speaker 1: Council even said like, we're gonna have to put our
- 14:43Speaker 1: heads together and kind of figure it out because they
- 14:45Speaker 1: need it.
- 14:45Speaker 2: They need phil Maton to be good.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you mentioned that off the air. I was kind
- 14:51Speaker 4: of surprised to hear that that he declined to comment
- 14:55Speaker 4: someone who's been a veteran and successful for a very
- 15:00Speaker 4: long time. Yeah, I got. I mean, I gotta say,
- 15:06Speaker 4: like we are usually, you know, covering the offseason, kind
- 15:10Speaker 4: of rolling our eyes with some of the Cubs bargain
- 15:14Speaker 4: bin signings, but maybe they're just like not good at
- 15:21Speaker 4: you know, kind of identifying the relievers giving them the
- 15:26Speaker 4: two year deals. I think in the worst way possible,
- 15:30Speaker 4: they're proving their own points. So I'm sure there's not
- 15:32Speaker 4: a whole lot of satisfaction in that regard. But I
- 15:36Speaker 4: go back to you know, Andrew Kittridge's I think it
- 15:39Speaker 4: was a nine million dollar option. I was asked about
- 15:41Speaker 4: that actually during the playoffs, because we didn't know when
- 15:43Speaker 4: the season would end. It just didn't want to save
- 15:46Speaker 4: it all till the end. And it was kind of like,
- 15:48Speaker 4: well that nine million dollars. Maybe we signed like nine
- 15:53Speaker 4: guys for potentially nine million dollars and if one of
- 15:57Speaker 4: them's right, we're geniuses, and that's it's a pretty effective strategy,
- 16:05Speaker 4: you know. Or you could also say maybe the Cubs
- 16:09Speaker 4: sort of well, that was a large contract by their standards.
- 16:13Speaker 4: It was not really kind of a market rate for
- 16:15Speaker 4: some of these closer types who are moving and a
- 16:18Speaker 4: lot of them moved to you know, National League teams
- 16:24Speaker 4: in the playoff hunt. I want to say his reliever
- 16:28Speaker 4: or contract was maybe top fifteen in terms of overall value.
- 16:34Speaker 4: It was not, you know, close to the top end.
- 16:38Speaker 4: And you're right, you know, one or two outings really
- 16:42Speaker 4: blow up a reliever's profile, his stat line and maybe
- 16:47Speaker 4: they can get them back, but just a really rough
- 16:51Speaker 4: start in an area where the Cubs have are reluctant
- 16:55Speaker 4: to invest money, and you know, Maytons showing them why
- 16:59Speaker 4: right now?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean sorry, excuse me.
- 17:02Speaker 1: That pitch to Peters, if I remember correctly, was like
- 17:08Speaker 1: center cut, like it was not a good pitch. It was, yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 1: right down the middle. I'm looking at it now, just
- 17:15Speaker 1: a hanging sweeper.
- 17:18Speaker 2: He's clearly you.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Know, there's something off, whether it's the knees still bothering him,
- 17:24Speaker 1: whether he's trying to get his mechanics right, whatever it is.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I don't like to suggest that relievers are just completely
- 17:32Speaker 1: done when when stuff like this happens, because I felt
- 17:36Speaker 1: like with Hector Narris and Ryan Presley was a little
- 17:38Speaker 1: more obvious that this is going to be tough. These
- 17:41Speaker 1: guys don't have the same stuff anymore. There's I think
- 17:45Speaker 1: the stuff may still be there for film Aton, but
- 17:49Speaker 1: there's something else off and he needs to get right.
- 17:54Speaker 1: You're not at the point where you're running out of time,
- 17:56Speaker 1: so to say, you know, it's still may so you
- 17:59Speaker 1: can get him right. But they I think it's it's
- 18:02Speaker 1: really important. The injuries and and the ineffectiveness are going
- 18:08Speaker 1: to cost the Cubs in the bullpen if they don't
- 18:10Speaker 1: get get some of these guys right. And may Ton
- 18:13Speaker 1: is obviously big cale Thielbar is probably coming back today.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We're recording on a Monday. He's probably coming back today.
- 18:19Speaker 1: That that's important.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I think.
- 18:23Speaker 1: You mentioned Andrew Kittridge Patrick uh eleven oh five r
- 18:28Speaker 1: not striking guys out, and uh, and I think he
- 18:32Speaker 1: just he just came off the I L with a
- 18:35Speaker 1: shoulder issue.
- 18:36Speaker 2: So you know, they made the right call.
- 18:39Speaker 1: There, I guess, but but uh didn't didn't spend that
- 18:43Speaker 1: money perfectly. It's hard. It's hard to rebuild a bullpen.
- 18:46Speaker 1: You never know, these things are go up and down.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You think you have this consistent guy that that every
- 18:54Speaker 1: year performs, and then I mean, and it's not like
- 18:59Speaker 1: he was not on a down trend.
- 19:00Speaker 2: He was.
- 19:01Speaker 1: He had an optic last year. It's a it's not
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's an imperfect science. And and I you know, uh,
- 19:08Speaker 1: it's got to be frustrating for those involved, uh trying
- 19:13Speaker 1: to figure this out. And and and you know kind
- 19:16Speaker 1: of like what did what what did you do wrong?
- 19:19Speaker 1: You finally spend on someone that you think is is
- 19:23Speaker 1: not like at the end of their career and and
- 19:25Speaker 1: it leads to this, I don't know.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I think confidence has got to be kind of part
- 19:31Speaker 4: of this at this point. The way you described the
- 19:33Speaker 4: scene and the visiting clubhouse at Rayfield midtime has a
- 19:38Speaker 4: really good reputation as a you know, buttoned up personality,
- 19:42Speaker 4: someone who's really curious about pitching. Has I think councils said,
- 19:49Speaker 4: you know, a great pitching mind, is how he described
- 19:51Speaker 4: it in spring training, and so that certainly a turnaround
- 19:58Speaker 4: is not totally out of the cour question. And I
- 20:01Speaker 4: think probably could use some lower leverage moments to work
- 20:04Speaker 4: through whatever this is. And I still the back of
- 20:07Speaker 4: my head, I don't know if the knee is still
- 20:10Speaker 4: a thing. But the way he described it as he
- 20:13Speaker 4: was kind of close to coming off the injured list
- 20:16Speaker 4: was like in April he was feeling like how he
- 20:19Speaker 4: felt last September with the knee, and that is that
- 20:24Speaker 4: to me was sounding an alarm bell of like, Okay,
- 20:28Speaker 4: this is just gonna have to me manage the whole time.
- 20:30Speaker 4: And obviously, when you're talking about the knee generating power
- 20:36Speaker 4: and balance and consistency, like that's not not gonna help if.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You have like a chronic knee issue. Yeah, absolutely so.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I mean this could just be like an injury related
- 20:47Speaker 1: thing where and not even injury, just pain tolerance and
- 20:52Speaker 1: not being able to fully do your you know, do
- 20:54Speaker 1: what you need to do on the mound. So we'll
- 20:57Speaker 1: see how they how they move forward with that. Let's
- 21:01Speaker 1: talk about another pitcher that had a day to forget
- 21:05Speaker 1: at the rate.

- 22:09Speaker 1: Patrick. We know Jamison Tyne is a flyball pitcher. He
- 22:13Speaker 1: gives up home runs. This is not a surprise. And
- 22:19Speaker 1: the White Sox hit home runs. They're one of the
- 22:20Speaker 1: better home run hitting teams in baseball, and they teed
- 22:24Speaker 1: off on Jamison Tyn on Saturday. Five home runs. Yeah,
- 22:30Speaker 1: five home runs. Just a really rough performance, and they didn't.
- 22:38Speaker 1: He made mistakes and they did not miss them. This
- 22:40Speaker 1: was not a situation where they were fouling them back.
- 22:43Speaker 1: They popped them up. No, they sent every single mistake
- 22:47Speaker 1: that he made. Maybe the one that wasn't a mistake
- 22:51Speaker 1: was was the first We're a COMI home run. He
- 22:54Speaker 1: probably wanted it a little lower, but still it was
- 22:57Speaker 1: off the plate. Other than that, like that, they just
- 23:01Speaker 1: kind of took advantage of Tyne not having his best command.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I believe it was eight runs and all on Tyne
- 23:12Speaker 1: and all coming via the home run. Just just a
- 23:16Speaker 1: rough day and now he's like his overall season numbers
- 23:20Speaker 1: are up. He leads all baseball and home runs allowed.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Not not an ideal situation. And Tyne is you know,
- 23:31Speaker 1: we know he's a pro and he's going to put
- 23:32Speaker 1: in the work to get back to get right. But
- 23:35Speaker 1: that that was a rough rough day for him.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Yeah, And I mean his previous start he was matching
- 23:42Speaker 4: up well against Jacob du Gram in Texas. He's been
- 23:48Speaker 4: pretty good on balance after that really rough spring training.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I'm not super worried.
- 23:56Speaker 2: About ty On.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I think it's just like he's alluded to earlier, so
- 24:01Speaker 4: hot of like the pitching injuries just seemed to be
- 24:05Speaker 4: catching up to them. Of just like if there's any
- 24:08Speaker 4: sort well this is more than a slight down tick.
- 24:10Speaker 4: But you know, Edward Cabrera hasn't been great. He's been
- 24:15Speaker 4: like fine, Tiwn's been pretty good. Shoda has been great,
- 24:21Speaker 4: but he's probably due for a little bit of regression.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Like do you think Ben Brown's gonna you know, have
- 24:28Speaker 4: a zero er and the rotation the rest of the year.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 24:31Speaker 4: And you see the cracks in the bullpen. I think
- 24:35Speaker 4: just all of it kind of reinforces what we've been
- 24:41Speaker 4: talking about the Cubs need to go out and get
- 24:43Speaker 4: more pitching. Eventually, they need to stabilize the group. They
- 24:47Speaker 4: need certain pitchers to get healthy. But it was kind
- 24:52Speaker 4: of jarring just seeing the White Sox just teeing off
- 24:56Speaker 4: after you know, several years there were they were just,
- 25:01Speaker 4: you know, one of the worst baseball organizations of all time.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 1: The home run Colson Montgomery hit was one of those
- 25:12Speaker 1: whoa home runs, So you know, one of the ones
- 25:15Speaker 1: where you see it live and you're like, I haven't
- 25:17Speaker 1: seen many hit that far or you know in that area. Yeah, Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: that guy's got some legit pop.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 1: So I'm seeing a lot of people like complain I
- 25:31Speaker 1: saw I was seeing a lot of people complain about
- 25:33Speaker 1: ty Owne. I just feel like, this is this happens.
- 25:38Speaker 1: He's not an ace. He's a fourth or fifth starter
- 25:42Speaker 1: on a good team, and that's what he should be, uh,
- 25:45Speaker 1: fourth or like even on the best of teams. These
- 25:48Speaker 1: those guys, those back of your rotation guys have blow
- 25:52Speaker 1: up outings. He's going to have a handful of these
- 25:56Speaker 1: every year, and.
- 25:57Speaker 2: I feel like we go through this a lot.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Obviously, the first three months of his first season here,
- 26:02Speaker 1: it was far too often I but since then he's
- 26:08Speaker 1: been really strong, and then this was a disaster outing,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and I like what Tyne has been great at is
- 26:15Speaker 1: kind of punching back, figuring out what he did wrong,
- 26:18Speaker 1: what's going wrong, adjusting in some way and giving them
- 26:25Speaker 1: sometimes great but mostly just like good enough. That's what like,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you need to keep your team in the game, give
- 26:31Speaker 1: your offense a chance to win, and set your team
- 26:35Speaker 1: up for an opportunity to.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Get a W. But that's mostly what he does.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I I don't like there's like it's either a lot
- 26:44Speaker 1: of times the reaction I see is like it's black
- 26:46Speaker 1: or white. It's like this guy's awesome, where this guy stinks.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Like they don't have a lot of options.
- 26:53Speaker 1: First of all, so Jameson Tyne's like spot in the rotation,
- 26:58Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, jab Rasad got sent down to stretched
- 27:00Speaker 1: out that. It doesn't mean he's taking over Jameson Tyon's
- 27:04Speaker 1: rotation spot. They don't have They can't do that. They
- 27:08Speaker 1: just need depth. They needed to send Tavirasad down because
- 27:11Speaker 1: they need someone in the minors to call upon if
- 27:15Speaker 1: there's another injury or if you know, if something happens.
- 27:19Speaker 1: They need that. They can't have no starting pitching depth.
- 27:25Speaker 1: So I get the frustration, I get the reactions at times,
- 27:30Speaker 1: but also I think people need a little perspective. He's
- 27:33Speaker 1: been pretty good for the most part, and you cannot
- 27:38Speaker 1: expect perfection from the back end rotation guy. He needs
- 27:42Speaker 1: to be better than he was on Saturday. He'll tell
- 27:44Speaker 1: you that. But I just think like it. The Cubs
- 27:49Speaker 1: don't have a lot of options. This is a trustworthy veteran,
- 27:53Speaker 1: and you kind of know that he's going to put
- 27:55Speaker 1: in the work to try and get back. It may
- 27:57Speaker 1: take a start or two. There may be more bad
- 27:59Speaker 1: starts coming. It wouldn't be shocked by that, but also
- 28:04Speaker 1: I'd be surprised if he doesn't put together, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: a good stretch in the near future as well.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it's funny how it lines up here with the
- 28:15Speaker 4: Brewers coming into town. That the Cubs probably caught the
- 28:18Speaker 4: Mets and Phillies at good times, and we'll see if
- 28:21Speaker 4: the Brewers are catching the Cubs at a good time.
- 28:25Speaker 4: But it should be a very interesting matchup against the Brewers.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Curious to see if there are any sort of viral
- 28:37Speaker 4: rivalry moments, if one team separates itself, or if we
- 28:44Speaker 4: just kind of get more the same of these sort
- 28:46Speaker 4: of like one run games going going back and forth.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you should. You should absolutely be fun.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Obviously a fun series on this outside fun hopefully fun
- 28:57Speaker 1: set coming up here at Wrigal.
- 29:02Speaker 2: First time.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The Cubs are facing the Brewers this year, and the
- 29:05Speaker 1: Brewers are not a power hitting team. But the wind
- 29:07Speaker 1: is blowing out, I believe, on Monday, and I think
- 29:09Speaker 1: we're getting some decent weather this week, so it should
- 29:14Speaker 1: be fun at Wrigley. All right, Thanks so much for
