- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Chino Morino is the lead singer of Deftones, the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Sacramento band experiencing resurgence as a new generation discovers their
- 0:27Speaker 1: nineties hits on social media. This year, Deftones have been
- 0:31Speaker 1: selling out arenas while putting the finishing touches on their
- 0:33Speaker 1: latest album, Private Music. During the recording sessions, guitarist Stephen
- 0:38Speaker 1: Carpenter's health took a turn when he was diagnosed with
- 0:40Speaker 1: type two diabetes. Chino stepped in to handle more of
- 0:43Speaker 1: the guitar parts, approaching the album with newfound clarity after
- 0:47Speaker 1: getting sober. On today's episode, Lea Rose talks with Chino
- 0:50Speaker 1: about the band's early days living with their late bassist
- 0:53Speaker 1: Chee Chang. He reflects on the story of their Around
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Fur album cover, and shares his post show ritual,
- 0:59Speaker 1: which often includes winding down with rom coms and his
- 1:02Speaker 1: tour bus bunk. This is broken record, real musicians conversation.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Here's Leo Rose with Gino Moreno.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I was just listening to Private Music, and I was curious,
- 1:20Speaker 2: Like the album starts so.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Hard, so fast.
- 1:24Speaker 2: It's got like that sledgy riff right off the top,
- 1:27Speaker 2: Like how important is that first Like three seconds when
- 1:31Speaker 2: you're sequencing the album.
- 1:33Speaker 4: It's pretty important.
- 1:34Speaker 5: I mean when we wrote that song, I kind of
- 1:37Speaker 5: knew right away that that wanted that to be the
- 1:39Speaker 5: first song on the record because I think the like
- 1:42Speaker 5: you said, it's kind of this bombastic sort of sledge
- 1:44Speaker 5: riff that yeah, and I loved Abes drumming on the song.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I think it's really created what he does in the
- 1:49Speaker 5: verses and the staccato intro as well. It's just like
- 1:53Speaker 5: it kind of has a lot of elements that we're
- 1:56Speaker 5: sort of known for, so it's familiar, I think in
- 1:59Speaker 5: the beginning for the first thing to introduce the record,
- 2:03Speaker 5: but I also think it's powerful and then the just
- 2:06Speaker 5: you know, the song itself sort of has this like
- 2:09Speaker 5: just great introductory phil I think too, like what's to come.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 5: You know what's crazy is that we we wrote the
- 2:16Speaker 5: record in different sessions, like just getting together playing one
- 2:21Speaker 5: we did in the desert, which was we probably wrote
- 2:23Speaker 5: like five or six songs there, went to Shangri La,
- 2:26Speaker 5: did another five or six songs, wrote them there, didn't
- 2:29Speaker 5: record anything there but recorded what we were doing, but
- 2:32Speaker 5: it wasn't.
- 2:33Speaker 4: The actual you know, recording. We went actually after that
- 2:35Speaker 4: we tracked it.
- 2:35Speaker 5: So when we started tracking it, though, I already had
- 2:38Speaker 5: a sequence in mind once we had of the songs,
- 2:40Speaker 5: So we actually tracked the album in the sequence of
- 2:45Speaker 5: the record, which was cool. So's that's something that I
- 2:48Speaker 5: kind of like figured out early, Like I really had
- 2:51Speaker 5: this mindset of like creating an album, the kind of
- 2:54Speaker 5: that started in one place, went somewhere, and ended somewhere.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I kind of liked that idea of doing that.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, have you guys ever done like a hidden track
- 3:03Speaker 2: or anything like that, like any like special.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Yeah, we did.
- 3:06Speaker 5: That was like real popular in the nineties, I think
- 3:08Speaker 5: yes on CD. So we we had one on our
- 3:12Speaker 5: second record around the fir and it was pretty funny
- 3:16Speaker 5: because it's like it has to be a part of
- 3:19Speaker 5: the last song on the record, so the last song
- 3:21Speaker 5: on the record, that being like thirty something minutes long
- 3:23Speaker 5: or whatever, because we had like there was like a
- 3:25Speaker 5: twenty minute like break of silence. It's pretty funny we
- 3:28Speaker 5: we had. That was back when answering machines were still
- 3:31Speaker 5: people still had answering machines in their in their apartments
- 3:34Speaker 5: or whatever.
- 3:34Speaker 4: So we were staying in this apartment in Seattle.
- 3:37Speaker 5: We were recording, and Stephan Abe and myself shared an apartment,
- 3:42Speaker 5: so we had our answer machine and our it was
- 3:46Speaker 5: attached also to the intercom too, so like when friends
- 3:48Speaker 5: came over, they'd pressed the intercom to call us, and
- 3:51Speaker 5: then they'd leave the messages from either downstairs in the
- 3:55Speaker 5: you know, in the intercom to our our answer machine
- 3:57Speaker 5: or if someone called whatever, but we had our greeting
- 4:00Speaker 5: on there. Was like super funny, Like it was like
- 4:02Speaker 5: Stephan was like taking a bong hit and like, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 5: call us back, you know what I mean, well over night,
- 4:08Speaker 5: but we actually took that tape and we put that
- 4:11Speaker 5: on there so that our little message thing was on
- 4:13Speaker 5: as part of the hidden track. And then like a
- 4:15Speaker 5: couple of minutes later, a bonus song pops in out
- 4:18Speaker 5: of nowhere.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Oh that's so cool.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember Alanis Morissette had one of those, and
- 4:23Speaker 2: it came in like twenty minutes after. So if like
- 4:25Speaker 2: you left the CD on, yeah totally, just like all
- 4:28Speaker 2: of a sudden it started playing, you were like, whoa
- 4:30Speaker 2: who is it.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Was that on the Jagged Little Bit of album. Yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 5: that was a great record. I mean it's crazy because
- 4:36Speaker 5: that was also Maverick Records, which was where we were
- 4:39Speaker 5: at at the time, So our records came out pretty
- 4:42Speaker 5: close to each other, our first record and her record.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, we had a kind of a close thing with
- 4:48Speaker 4: that record. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Okay, that's so cool. Yeah, that was an awesome era.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So speaking of you guys living together, I know that
- 4:56Speaker 2: I think like right after or maybe while you were
- 4:58Speaker 2: still in high school, you lived with Chi right.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Yep, right out of my parents' house. I was still seventeen.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I kind of just stopped going to school. It was
- 5:07Speaker 5: a senior quote unquot senior the normal high school I
- 5:11Speaker 5: went to, and ended up going to a continuation high school,
- 5:14Speaker 5: which is like sort of just where you go and
- 5:17Speaker 5: make up credits and whatever, still get a diploma about
- 5:19Speaker 5: you like, you know, you just kind of do textbook work.
- 5:22Speaker 5: There's not really teachers and they're teaching. You're just kind
- 5:24Speaker 5: of like going through textbooks and whatever. But we started
- 5:27Speaker 5: playing shows actually, and we started taking little trips from
- 5:30Speaker 5: Sacramento to like Oakland and San Francisco and just like
- 5:34Speaker 5: d outskirts of a town and playing shows. So we'd
- 5:37Speaker 5: get back from playing shows like you know, three in
- 5:40Speaker 5: the morning, and then like and then I would just
- 5:42Speaker 5: like end up saying over cheese house, and then I'd
- 5:45Speaker 5: wake up in the morning and.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Be like, I'm not going to school today.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Like I kind of already had my mind made up that, like,
- 5:50Speaker 5: you know, not that I would be successful with the band,
- 5:52Speaker 5: but like I just was like that was kind of
- 5:54Speaker 5: like my priority. And my parents were supportive. I mean,
- 5:59Speaker 5: they were bummed I think that I like stopped going
- 6:01Speaker 5: to school, but they were also a little preoccupied. My
- 6:04Speaker 5: parents were actually going through divorce at that time too,
- 6:06Speaker 5: so it was like I kind of slipped through the
- 6:08Speaker 5: cracks a little bit. Like normally my parents were pretty
- 6:10Speaker 5: strict about stuff, but like they were kind of dealing
- 6:13Speaker 5: with their own things, so like I kind of just
- 6:14Speaker 5: like was able to do what I wanted for the
- 6:16Speaker 5: most part, wow, and really like checking up on me
- 6:18Speaker 5: like are.
- 6:19Speaker 4: You doing this, are you doing that? Are you doing
- 6:20Speaker 4: this or whatever.
- 6:21Speaker 5: So in a way, it was kind of I guess
- 6:24Speaker 5: I got lucky in a way because I got just
- 6:27Speaker 5: dived deep into music as opposed to like trying to
- 6:30Speaker 5: do school and that. Yeah, I was able to really
- 6:33Speaker 5: like focus on music stuff. But it was weird, you
- 6:35Speaker 5: know what I mean. It wasn't like, you know, I
- 6:37Speaker 5: was still kind of it was a bummer, you know
- 6:39Speaker 5: what I mean. I was like one of the only
- 6:40Speaker 5: kids at that point. We had a lot of friends
- 6:42Speaker 5: whose parents were divorced, like when you grow up whatever,
- 6:44Speaker 5: and I was always so proud, like my parents are
- 6:46Speaker 5: still married, blah blah blah.
- 6:48Speaker 4: And then right like you know, your high school league divorce.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It wasn't like something you saw coming.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Not really, no, no, Yeah, did.
- 6:58Speaker 2: You guys sound like Deftones in the beginning, like when
- 7:00Speaker 2: the band first started playing together, Like what did you
- 7:03Speaker 2: sound like?
- 7:04Speaker 4: I think, yeah, some of the DNAs there.
- 7:05Speaker 5: I mean, obviously we were trying to figure out, like
- 7:08Speaker 5: we were trying to figure out how to play our
- 7:10Speaker 5: own instruments. I was, I was emulating a lot of
- 7:13Speaker 5: what I liked, so like, you know, some songs, I
- 7:16Speaker 5: would try to sound like Morrissey and sound like Danzing
- 7:20Speaker 5: and like those things don't match. But like in a way,
- 7:23Speaker 5: like I kind of came up with my own sound
- 7:25Speaker 5: maybe because those things don't match.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And I just liked what I liked and I was.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Trying to take I was just taking influence from the
- 7:31Speaker 5: things that I like enjoyed. Yeah, Also, like I listened
- 7:34Speaker 5: to a lot of rap music back then, so I
- 7:37Speaker 5: used to like to try to rap as well. And
- 7:40Speaker 5: to me, I didn't think it was that weird to
- 7:42Speaker 5: like put like rhythmic singing over some of the stuff.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 7:45Speaker 5: My lyrics weren't really like I guess rap oriented lyrics
- 7:49Speaker 5: where I wasn't like, you know, talking about things that
- 7:51Speaker 5: I didn't really do. But I think just the format
- 7:54Speaker 5: of like like the Cadences and things like that like
- 7:56Speaker 5: that were inspiring to me. So I put like all
- 7:58Speaker 5: those things together screaming from like I loved Pantera and
- 8:03Speaker 5: Bad Brains and and so like just I guess all
- 8:06Speaker 5: those little elements whatever, I was just kind of you know,
- 8:10Speaker 5: emulating maybe each one at certain points, like a little
- 8:13Speaker 5: bit more like where you can really tell, oh, he's
- 8:16Speaker 5: trying to do this. And I think over the time,
- 8:18Speaker 5: I've been able to, like, I guess, find myself within
- 8:22Speaker 5: all those things and kind of have my own voice.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I guess, I hope.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, when did you find your voice?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Like when do you feel like you were squarely standing
- 8:30Speaker 2: in your own sound.
- 8:31Speaker 5: I mean it would probably be I think definitely after
- 8:34Speaker 5: our first record, because our first record is still hard
- 8:36Speaker 5: for you to listen to because I can hear like
- 8:39Speaker 5: myself not still like not being confident and not really
- 8:43Speaker 5: knowing what.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I was doing.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I mean, I was so nervous on our first record
- 8:48Speaker 5: that I didn't even write a lot of lyrics, like
- 8:50Speaker 5: a lot of it's just like freestyling syllables and whatever.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Like and then so like if you notice, like inside
- 8:56Speaker 5: there's not lyrics in the record, there's some scribbled notes
- 8:59Speaker 5: of me that I wrote whatever. So there's some words
- 9:01Speaker 5: in there, but like some of it's not because I
- 9:04Speaker 5: was so scared to commit to like what I was
- 9:07Speaker 5: going to say.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yeah, just kind of like used my voice as an
- 9:10Speaker 4: instrument more.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Yeah, so that record's hard for us too because I
- 9:14Speaker 5: can see exactly where I was whatever, just kind of
- 9:18Speaker 5: non confident, like sort of still figuring out. Whereas maybe
- 9:23Speaker 5: our second record, I think, you know, touring a lot
- 9:26Speaker 5: from our first record and just like actually getting the
- 9:28Speaker 5: opportunity to make a second record, which a lot of
- 9:32Speaker 5: bands don't even get that chance, right, we got to
- 9:34Speaker 5: signed to a pretty big label and yeah, and you know,
- 9:37Speaker 5: we didn't sell anything close to like what Atlantis sold, right,
- 9:40Speaker 5: so who's our label made? So like I mean honestly,
- 9:43Speaker 5: that probably helped because I think our label was making
- 9:46Speaker 5: so much money from Atlantis. Yeah that like they probably
- 9:50Speaker 5: lost a lot of money on our first record, but
- 9:52Speaker 5: allowed us to go and make a second record.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Reallyant honestly, did.
- 9:56Speaker 2: You have to like show and prove at that point
- 9:58Speaker 2: to the label, Like, was there anything that you had
- 10:00Speaker 2: to in a way promise them that we're going to
- 10:03Speaker 2: bring next time to make the next album do even better.
- 10:06Speaker 4: I don't think that there was early ever thatscussion, but
- 10:10Speaker 4: I think within ourselves, I think we wanted to. I
- 10:13Speaker 4: know I wanted to.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I wanted to show and prove, like, wow, we can
- 10:15Speaker 5: do so much better, because even if our first record
- 10:17Speaker 5: was done, I knew that it wasn't as good as
- 10:20Speaker 5: the band that we were becoming. So with the second record,
- 10:24Speaker 5: I really think that we made a statement. I think
- 10:27Speaker 5: it's probably still one of our strongest records to the state.
- 10:30Speaker 5: And then after that we made the White Pony record,
- 10:32Speaker 5: which was like a pretty big left turn to like
- 10:37Speaker 5: where music was sort of at that point, where like
- 10:40Speaker 5: a lot of new metal music what they were calling
- 10:42Speaker 5: it at the time, which I guess they still call
- 10:44Speaker 5: it that, but it was like kind of that was
- 10:46Speaker 5: like kind of pop like on the Raino all day long,
- 10:50Speaker 5: and we steered like far left of that and made
- 10:53Speaker 5: the White Pony album. And the label wasn't actually really
- 10:57Speaker 5: that stoked on it because of that, but they did
- 11:01Speaker 5: support us a lot because they knew that it was
- 11:03Speaker 5: still a good record. And honestly, that was probably one
- 11:06Speaker 5: of the best decisions we ever made doing that, because
- 11:08Speaker 5: I think it help with our longevity for sure.
- 11:11Speaker 2: How hands on, was Madonna with a label because it
- 11:13Speaker 2: was her label?
- 11:14Speaker 4: Right? Yes? Yes?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Was she involved with like the artist sound? Would she
- 11:20Speaker 2: sort of be in like an executive producer position? Did
- 11:22Speaker 2: you have any conversations with her, like creative conversations about
- 11:25Speaker 2: what you were putting out?
- 11:26Speaker 5: No, you know, no, not really, And I can only
- 11:30Speaker 5: speak for us. Maybe she did with some other artists,
- 11:32Speaker 5: but I mean, I remember the first time that we
- 11:36Speaker 5: when we very first got signed. I went to the
- 11:38Speaker 5: office and I didn't even know she was there. I
- 11:41Speaker 5: went to go sit in my an r's office, the
- 11:44Speaker 5: guy who signed his name's guy, And I was sitting
- 11:48Speaker 5: talking to him and like staring at like, you know,
- 11:51Speaker 5: face to face with him. The doors behind me, and
- 11:52Speaker 5: the door opens and he starts talking to her. I
- 11:55Speaker 5: just hear a female voice and I look over and
- 11:57Speaker 5: I look up and it's her. And then she he's like.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Oh, this is new artist, blah blah blah.
- 12:00Speaker 5: And I was just freaking out because as like a
- 12:03Speaker 5: ten year old and myself was just like.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 12:05Speaker 5: And then she ended up coming to a few of
- 12:07Speaker 5: our shows, and like I remember one time we were
- 12:10Speaker 5: backstage and we were about to go on stage and
- 12:13Speaker 5: she was like looking me up and down. She's like,
- 12:15Speaker 5: are you going to get ready? I looked down at
- 12:17Speaker 5: my clothes. I was like, yeah, I'm ready. She's like,
- 12:19Speaker 5: that's what you're gonna wear? And I think I just
- 12:21Speaker 5: had a prayer like Dicky's and a T shirt or
- 12:23Speaker 5: something on whatever, and she was like, that's what you're
- 12:25Speaker 5: gonna wear, like kind of like and I.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Was like, whoa, she's a come here.
- 12:30Speaker 5: And then she like helped me like pulled my pants
- 12:31Speaker 5: up a little bit, like help me fix my belt
- 12:33Speaker 5: and whatever. And it was just like this is like
- 12:35Speaker 5: surreal right now, But those kind of things are like,
- 12:38Speaker 5: you know, like like a story like until today that
- 12:40Speaker 5: still like brings joy to me totally.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So I was going to ask you about like back
- 12:44Speaker 2: when we were talking about you living with Chi. Since
- 12:47Speaker 2: you've known the guys for so long, I feel like
- 12:50Speaker 2: you can tell a lot about a person by the
- 12:53Speaker 2: way their bedroom is. Do you remember, like growing up,
- 12:56Speaker 2: what people's bedrooms were.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Like, I totally do.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yeah, like Abes or Chi or.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yes, Abe.
- 13:02Speaker 5: I mean, so I'll use Abe as an example because
- 13:05Speaker 5: this is great. I went to Abe's house for the
- 13:07Speaker 5: first time. I think we were in seven, in maybe
- 13:10Speaker 5: eighth grade. We're in junior high school, and I go
- 13:13Speaker 5: to his house after school A skateboard over there, and
- 13:16Speaker 5: I go into his room and he's got a little
- 13:18Speaker 5: tiny room. I mean it's, you know, pretty small, but
- 13:21Speaker 5: his drum set takes up his whole room.
- 13:23Speaker 4: And it was his dad's drum set.
- 13:25Speaker 5: His dad passed away when he was a couple of
- 13:28Speaker 5: years before that actually, and he was in a band.
- 13:31Speaker 5: He inherited the drum set from him, and he had
- 13:33Speaker 5: so his room was just the drum set. And then
- 13:36Speaker 5: he had a little tiny like mattress on the like
- 13:39Speaker 5: in the corner, like where he slept. I don't even
- 13:41Speaker 5: know if it was a mattress. I want to say,
- 13:42Speaker 5: it was just like the blanket, started sleeping bag whatever.
- 13:44Speaker 5: But he sacrifices like comfort. So it's like his room
- 13:46Speaker 5: was just like his drum set. And then back then
- 13:49Speaker 5: as when we had cassettes, so we have a whole
- 13:50Speaker 5: wall of just like cassettes and a lot of like
- 13:53Speaker 5: dub cassettes because that's what we used to be back
- 13:54Speaker 5: in the day, like dub cassettes. And then like do
- 13:57Speaker 5: our own artwork on him whatever, So whole wall of cassettes,
- 14:00Speaker 5: you know. So I was just enamorated by his cassette
- 14:02Speaker 5: collecting and it's just music, like his music ruled his life,
- 14:06Speaker 5: so like that was his little world, right. That was
- 14:09Speaker 5: awesome now now cheese. So we shared a bedroom when
- 14:12Speaker 5: I moved in. It was a one bedroom apartment that
- 14:14Speaker 5: we lived in, and he lived in there actually with
- 14:16Speaker 5: his girlfriend at the time. When I would go stay
- 14:18Speaker 5: the night over there, and then him and his girlfriend
- 14:20Speaker 5: broke up and it could have had something to do
- 14:23Speaker 5: with that. I was always asleep on the couch in
- 14:25Speaker 5: the other room whatever, but she was finding like, yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 5: it's either him or me or kind of thing whatever.
- 14:29Speaker 5: But yeah, but she ended up moving out and then
- 14:32Speaker 5: so I moved in officially and then we both shared room,
- 14:35Speaker 5: so we had two like twin mattresses on each side
- 14:37Speaker 5: of the room. But our room was a fucking mess.
- 14:40Speaker 5: I mean, our whole apartment was. But it was like
- 14:42Speaker 5: college off and it was actually on the college campus
- 14:45Speaker 5: because he still went to school. The deal was his
- 14:48Speaker 5: dad would pay half the rent as long as he
- 14:50Speaker 5: was in school.
- 14:51Speaker 4: So his dad paid half.
- 14:53Speaker 5: The rent and then she and I split the other half.
- 14:55Speaker 5: With the rent was so it was like the rent
- 14:56Speaker 5: was like nothing. It was like it was like one
- 14:57Speaker 5: hundred and fifty bucks a month, and it was in
- 14:59Speaker 5: an apartment on kind of off campus a Sex State University.
- 15:03Speaker 5: And I worked at the dining comments there, like the
- 15:06Speaker 5: where they served the kids in the dorms stay lunches
- 15:09Speaker 5: and dinners whatever, the dining home whatever, so.
- 15:12Speaker 3: You could take food.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Yes, so we used to like come home with food. Yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 5: that's how we lived. But it was mostly just like beer.
- 15:18Speaker 5: We just drank beer. And like she was, he's a
- 15:21Speaker 5: couple of years older than then the rest of us actually,
- 15:24Speaker 5: so so he was old enough to buy beer at
- 15:26Speaker 5: that point.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I was still young and he might not even been
- 15:29Speaker 4: twenty one yet.
- 15:30Speaker 5: But there was a store across the street that we
- 15:32Speaker 5: could buy beer from so like, and it was cheap beer,
- 15:35Speaker 5: like the cheapest beer you can buy.
- 15:36Speaker 4: So like.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Our whole balcony was just full of beer cans and
- 15:39Speaker 5: it was like a total like I don't know, I
- 15:41Speaker 5: guess what I would expect a front house to kind
- 15:43Speaker 5: of write. It was just like us too, And then
- 15:46Speaker 5: all our friends.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Were there all the time, the hangout spot.
- 15:49Speaker 4: It was just the hangout spot. Yeah, but it was awesome.
- 15:51Speaker 3: So you must have been over high school.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Like, I don't know, you seemed like you were beyond
- 15:55Speaker 2: high school at that point, Like, I know, you're going
- 15:57Speaker 2: to the continuation school, but mentally, it seems like you
- 15:59Speaker 2: were already like graduated.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah, So yeah I did. I just stopped going to school.
- 16:03Speaker 5: I stopped even going to the continuation school. And it
- 16:06Speaker 5: was probably almost towards the end of the school year anyway.
- 16:09Speaker 5: So I was kind of bummed that I didn't graduate.
- 16:12Speaker 5: My parents were bummed that I didn't graduate. But other
- 16:14Speaker 5: than that, I was just like, yeah, I was already.
- 16:16Speaker 5: Like we started playing shows, and you know, we started
- 16:19Speaker 5: to guard a small following even around Sacramento at the time,
- 16:24Speaker 5: and we practiced almost every day and we just had fun.
- 16:29Speaker 5: We were wrapped by the river, so we swam, like
- 16:30Speaker 5: all summer, we're just swimming and like, yeah, it was
- 16:34Speaker 5: like the time of our lives, really like making music.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and who came Did Abe come up with the
- 16:39Speaker 3: name deftones?
- 16:41Speaker 4: Stephan did? Oh?
- 16:42Speaker 3: Stephan did yeah, And we.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Were going to play one of our first shows and
- 16:47Speaker 5: we had to buy tickets too. It was like one
- 16:49Speaker 5: of the things pay to play kind of thing, but
- 16:51Speaker 5: where we buy all the tickets and then we can
- 16:53Speaker 5: We bought the tickets for a dollar apiece from the
- 16:56Speaker 5: promoter and then we can sell them for three dollars
- 16:59Speaker 5: so we can make a cop books up each ticket.
- 17:00Speaker 4: But we did end up doing that.
- 17:01Speaker 5: We ended up just giving away to our friends at
- 17:03Speaker 5: school and whatever so we can have a pact for
- 17:06Speaker 5: a show. And we were like, well, we need a
- 17:08Speaker 5: band of we're gonna play a show. So Stephan said, oh,
- 17:10Speaker 5: we're going to be called deaf Tones and I was
- 17:12Speaker 5: like okay. So then Abe wrote it on the ticket,
- 17:14Speaker 5: but he didn't even know how to spell it, so
- 17:15Speaker 5: we spelled it like me a F tone whatever. Right, Oh,
- 17:20Speaker 5: So we gave all the tickets away and he's like no,
- 17:22Speaker 5: that's not how you spell it whatever.
- 17:24Speaker 4: So it's like deaf, like you know, like the rap.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Like yeah, like jamar or whatever.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yes, So I was like okay, so like yeah, it
- 17:31Speaker 5: wasn't anything that was like well thought out or other
- 17:34Speaker 5: than just you know, Stephan said, that's the name of
- 17:36Speaker 5: our band.
- 17:36Speaker 4: We said, okay, it's a great name. I mean, do
- 17:39Speaker 4: you like it now? I don't know. I mean it's worked.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I guess it's like you probably can't even think of it,
- 17:45Speaker 3: like yeah, objective.
- 17:46Speaker 4: It's silly.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I mean most band names are silly. There's a lot
- 17:51Speaker 5: of silly band names. But you kind of like the
- 17:53Speaker 5: name takes on its own thing after a while, right,
- 17:55Speaker 5: the music is kind of like whatever, and then you
- 17:57Speaker 5: don't really think so much about the name itself.
- 18:01Speaker 1: We'll be back with more from China Moreno after the break.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Who in the band and is in charge of like
- 18:11Speaker 2: the aesthetics? Like is there somebody who sort of keeps
- 18:14Speaker 2: an eye on that or is it a collective thing?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Like as far as the final album covers, the actual
- 18:20Speaker 2: font of the band name has always been super cool.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Is there one of you who is kind of like
- 18:25Speaker 2: that guy?
- 18:26Speaker 5: I'm pretty much the one that is like in the
- 18:28Speaker 5: trenches with all that stuff. But everybody he's it, you know.
- 18:31Speaker 5: I always I never do anything without everybody at least
- 18:34Speaker 5: likes seeing, Hey, what do you guys think about this?
- 18:35Speaker 5: And then there everybody's pretty easy going and they trust me,
- 18:38Speaker 5: which is rad cool.
- 18:39Speaker 4: But it's myself.
- 18:40Speaker 5: And then there's a guy at Warner Brothers who has
- 18:43Speaker 5: been working with us since the White Pony album by
- 18:46Speaker 5: the name of Frank Maddox. So him and I like
- 18:48Speaker 5: get together and brainstorm and like he's really good with
- 18:51Speaker 5: graphic art and photography and so yeah, we just come
- 18:56Speaker 5: up with random stuff and then we just sort of
- 18:58Speaker 5: sort of start like brainstorming.
- 19:00Speaker 3: And do you enjoy that part of it?
- 19:02Speaker 4: I do? I really do.
- 19:04Speaker 5: From everything from our T shirt designs to our like
- 19:08Speaker 5: our so when we play our live shows now we
- 19:11Speaker 5: have like these huge led screens behind us whatever, so
- 19:14Speaker 5: there's like different content that goes on between during the songs,
- 19:18Speaker 5: and then like some of it's imag which is basically
- 19:21Speaker 5: like the live feed of us on stage in the crowd.
- 19:25Speaker 5: But but I've been but like we throw filters on
- 19:27Speaker 5: that kind of stuff whatever, and just the color palettes
- 19:30Speaker 5: everything like I'm just like, really, that's kind of stuff
- 19:32Speaker 5: is fun for.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Me to do.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I've seen like still shots of it and there's
- 19:36Speaker 2: like pink like a woman's face.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Yeah, and I.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Saw people on Reddit trying to figure out where those
- 19:42Speaker 2: images come from.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of stuff I research and find, like
- 19:47Speaker 5: archive dot org is one one site that I've been
- 19:49Speaker 5: going on for years and years, and it's just like
- 19:51Speaker 5: all this like old archival footage of stuff whatever, some
- 19:55Speaker 5: old movies like I like to find like old like
- 19:58Speaker 5: rare you know stuff, And yeah, imagery and like sonics
- 20:03Speaker 5: like those two things to me, Like, I love marrying
- 20:06Speaker 5: those things together, whether it's like I mean, when I
- 20:09Speaker 5: listened to music a lot of times, I'll see images
- 20:11Speaker 5: and vice versa. I'll like look at the image sometimes
- 20:14Speaker 5: and I'll kind of hear music. So really marrying those
- 20:16Speaker 5: two things is always fun.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Wow.
- 20:19Speaker 3: And you've done some scoring recently, right, some movie scoring
- 20:22Speaker 3: or show scoring.
- 20:24Speaker 5: I've done some of it. Some I did, like this
- 20:26Speaker 5: Hulu thing once I've done. Yeah, but it's something that
- 20:30Speaker 5: I want to do more of. I haven't done anything recently,
- 20:33Speaker 5: but I love I'm really into soundscapes and Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 3: That seems like something that you'd be really really good at.
- 20:41Speaker 4: It still takes I mean, you have to know what
- 20:43Speaker 4: you're doing. It's hard.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Like coming up with the ideas, to me, that's the
- 20:47Speaker 5: easy part, but like actually doing it. I like, I
- 20:50Speaker 5: definitely help with that kind of the technical side of things.
- 20:53Speaker 5: And then again it's like musically, I'm not trained professionally.
- 20:57Speaker 5: I don't stand theory. I understand some. I'm trying to
- 21:01Speaker 5: learn more. But that's kind of been my goal lately actually,
- 21:03Speaker 5: as especially as I get older, is just working on piano,
- 21:07Speaker 5: playing piano, taking less and playing guitar, learning chords, tunings, everything.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Just that's kind of where I find fun now. Yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 5: learning stuff like that.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I heard Steffan saying that, I guess while making private
- 21:24Speaker 2: music he he has type two diabetes and he started
- 21:28Speaker 2: talking about it. But because of the illness, you had
- 21:31Speaker 2: to do more of the guitar parts.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, and honestly, it's crazy because I didn't
- 21:38Speaker 5: I knew something. We all knew that something was going
- 21:40Speaker 5: on with him at the time.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 21:42Speaker 5: He was like very lethargic, Like during the writing sessions
- 21:46Speaker 5: where he was there, he was present, but he was
- 21:49Speaker 5: just like he just seemed run down, and like we'd
- 21:53Speaker 5: start working on stuff and he'd kind of come in
- 21:55Speaker 5: and he'd like, he just seemed like very slow. And
- 21:58Speaker 5: it was hard sometimes because I would take it as like,
- 22:01Speaker 5: like we got in a couple of arguments a couple
- 22:02Speaker 5: of times where I was like, dude, look, what's wrong
- 22:04Speaker 5: with you? Do you like not want to be here?
- 22:05Speaker 5: Like I would just ask him, and then you get
- 22:07Speaker 5: mad at me. You're like, what are you talking about?
- 22:09Speaker 5: And I'd be like, how could you ask me if
- 22:11Speaker 5: I want to be here? I'm here, and I'm like, yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 5: I know you're here, but like you don't seem interested
- 22:15Speaker 5: in what's going on. He's like, and he would get
- 22:17Speaker 5: mad at me for asking that, but everybody else was
- 22:19Speaker 5: thinking it, but no one else was asking this, So
- 22:21Speaker 5: then he'd get mad at me for like confronting him
- 22:23Speaker 5: about it. But we soon realized that, man, maybe something's
- 22:27Speaker 5: going off to health. And then we were playing Coachella
- 22:30Speaker 5: maybe I don't know, a few months after that after
- 22:32Speaker 5: that one of those sessions and and we got a
- 22:35Speaker 5: stage and he just like came up to all of
- 22:37Speaker 5: us and he was like, you guys, I'm really sorry that,
- 22:39Speaker 5: Like I played so bad, and honestly, I didn't really
- 22:43Speaker 5: realize it. I noticed that he was a little sloppier
- 22:45Speaker 5: than usual, but he was like, yo, he's like I
- 22:49Speaker 5: was like having a heart standing up. He's like in
- 22:51Speaker 5: my my hand wasn't like doing what, wasn't like responding
- 22:55Speaker 5: to like playing these songs.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Wow.
- 22:58Speaker 5: And so I was like, yo, I was like, you
- 22:59Speaker 5: need to go figure out what's going on with you.
- 23:02Speaker 5: And he's been one of those people who I've always
- 23:07Speaker 5: tried to self diagnose himself, like our golf YouTube and
- 23:10Speaker 5: like be like, oh, well, this is what's wrong with me.
- 23:11Speaker 5: And I'm like, dude, no, you need to go to
- 23:13Speaker 5: the doctor. And no one really likes to go to
- 23:15Speaker 5: the doctor. I get it, right. It's like, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 5: sometimes it's like scary, right, especially if you feel like
- 23:20Speaker 5: something's wrong with you.
- 23:22Speaker 4: You don't want to hear do you know what I mean?
- 23:24Speaker 4: But you you gotta know, right.
- 23:26Speaker 5: So, so eventually he faced up and he went and
- 23:29Speaker 5: then like and then I just like you just watched
- 23:32Speaker 5: his whole like he just changes, like once he knew
- 23:35Speaker 5: what was wrong with him, then he was like okay,
- 23:37Speaker 5: and then he started to figure out the tools of
- 23:39Speaker 5: it to deal with it. And now he's like he's
- 23:40Speaker 5: an obsessive person where it's like anything he gets to do,
- 23:43Speaker 5: whether it's like anything, just like he gets into he
- 23:46Speaker 5: gets obsessed with it.
- 23:47Speaker 4: So like how it's his health that he's obsessed with.
- 23:49Speaker 5: So, like we share a bus together and he every
- 23:53Speaker 5: night he's just like he's like, has this like his.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Sugar mon like thing on.
- 23:56Speaker 5: He's just like, look numbers and he's like, oh, look
- 23:59Speaker 5: at my thing is spike here and it's blah blah blah,
- 24:01Speaker 5: and I know so if I eat this, if I
- 24:02Speaker 5: you know, and this whatever. So he's just like he's
- 24:04Speaker 5: excited about it, and so like I just engage with
- 24:07Speaker 5: him about it, and it's like I'm just seeing him
- 24:09Speaker 5: like his like life come back into him, like physically
- 24:12Speaker 5: and mentally. Like he's just like awakening because he you know,
- 24:15Speaker 5: it's a it's a real positive thing that I'm happy with.
- 24:17Speaker 4: But that's awesome.
- 24:18Speaker 5: Back to what we were saying about as far as
- 24:19Speaker 5: the writing stuff, so like during that time, I didn't
- 24:23Speaker 5: realize that I was doing that. It was more or
- 24:25Speaker 5: less like Okay, well we're here and we're just going
- 24:29Speaker 5: to keep busy. So if he wasn't engaging. I would
- 24:33Speaker 5: just be like, Okay, here's an idea, kamany, let's go
- 24:35Speaker 5: boo boo boom, and then we'd just start working on stuff.
- 24:36Speaker 5: But before you knew it, we had like almost the
- 24:39Speaker 5: albums worth the material that where a lot of it.
- 24:42Speaker 5: He didn't spearhead because of what he was going through whatever.
- 24:45Speaker 5: So so in hindsight, yes, there was a lot more
- 24:49Speaker 5: I think where I picked up the slack on whatever.
- 24:50Speaker 4: But I enjoyed doing it too.
- 24:52Speaker 5: I mean, I love writing music and I love playing
- 24:55Speaker 5: with Abe and the other guy. So and it wasn't
- 24:58Speaker 5: like a thing where I wasn't mad about it and
- 25:01Speaker 5: he wasn't. Now I mean I obvious see it took
- 25:03Speaker 5: him a while because he was I think before he
- 25:06Speaker 5: knew what was going on and whatever, he was like
- 25:09Speaker 5: and he's always going to maybe have been away where
- 25:11Speaker 5: he's never really told me that. But it was weird
- 25:14Speaker 5: when we did the Zanelow interview. He in the middle
- 25:17Speaker 5: of the interview, he's like, I just want to say that,
- 25:19Speaker 5: you know, Gino like really stepped up and he really
- 25:21Speaker 5: like came through and blah blah, and he's like and
- 25:23Speaker 5: that was the first time he ever like like complimented
- 25:26Speaker 5: me or like our knowledge that, like you know, all
- 25:28Speaker 5: the hard work that I put into the to the
- 25:31Speaker 5: writing and stuff like that whatever. So like like I
- 25:33Speaker 5: kind of got like a little you know, teared up
- 25:36Speaker 5: a little bit. I mean funny the camera panned away
- 25:38Speaker 5: from you because you can't see, but I'm there with
- 25:40Speaker 5: my mouth open, just like whoa, like thank you for
- 25:43Speaker 5: technowledging that.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Oh that's so sweet?
- 25:45Speaker 5: Right, yeah, I mean I was just it was it
- 25:48Speaker 5: was like a you know, sentimental moment between friends.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a cool interview.
- 25:51Speaker 4: I liked.
- 25:51Speaker 2: That was just cool seeing you all together when you're
- 25:54Speaker 2: in the studio, are you sort of I don't know
- 25:57Speaker 2: if you saw the Beatles Get Back documentary, Oh yeah great.
- 26:02Speaker 5: It was long, but it was like worth watching, especially
- 26:04Speaker 5: if you're a musician. Like watching how they work and
- 26:07Speaker 5: their dynamic between the guys, it was like.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It turned them into real people for me, Like I
- 26:12Speaker 2: didn't think of them as real people. It's like I
- 26:15Speaker 2: understood their personalities and how they worked together and I
- 26:18Speaker 2: had no idea, Like seeing Paul's roll, how he stepped
- 26:22Speaker 2: up and he totally was like the task master and
- 26:25Speaker 2: he's like the band leader.
- 26:27Speaker 5: It's Orecm there like like George and they're just like
- 26:30Speaker 5: showing his rifts and stuff too, and you're just yeah, WHOA,
- 26:33Speaker 5: Like I don't know, I just love watching it because
- 26:35Speaker 5: it's it's pretty funny because like most bands are the same,
- 26:39Speaker 5: Like we all like there's so many cliches, like we
- 26:41Speaker 5: all do the same shit, and like relationship wise, and
- 26:44Speaker 5: like the kind of fight for you know this like
- 26:47Speaker 5: underlying fight for like you know, who's kind of steering
- 26:50Speaker 5: the ship sometimes, right, yes, And there's like with the
- 26:54Speaker 5: Beatles especially, there's like there's a lot of great songwriting
- 26:57Speaker 5: amongst all of them individually, right, So it's like how
- 27:00Speaker 5: they made that work and how like you got to
- 27:02Speaker 5: pick your battles and then you have to sometimes like
- 27:04Speaker 5: not say what you're thinking and then sometimes also like
- 27:07Speaker 5: tiptoe around certain things because as you know, that might
- 27:10Speaker 5: trigger somebody or this or that whatever. Try to get
- 27:12Speaker 5: your ideas heard, but like not take you know, not
- 27:15Speaker 5: dictate what everybody should be doing. Let people come up
- 27:17Speaker 5: with their own parts. And it's a part of being
- 27:19Speaker 5: in a band. It's like you know, it's like, yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 5: it's definitely like psychological like work.
- 27:26Speaker 2: You know what I mean, but I was thinking about that,
- 27:29Speaker 2: like picturing you now in the sessions for this new album,
- 27:33Speaker 2: Like are you sort of like the Paul McCartney of
- 27:35Speaker 2: the group. I don't know about that, Like as far
- 27:38Speaker 2: as you're like getting everybody in order, like organizing the chaos.
- 27:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess so.
- 27:45Speaker 5: I mean, we have a producer there that, especially with
- 27:48Speaker 5: this with this record, Nick Rasky Lenox, who did this record.
- 27:51Speaker 4: He also did a couple of workers.
- 27:52Speaker 5: But one of the main reasons why aside from him
- 27:54Speaker 5: being a great producer, but one of the main reasons
- 27:57Speaker 5: for hiring him for this, for this record specifically, was
- 28:00Speaker 5: for him to take on that role, you know, kind
- 28:04Speaker 5: of take some of that off my plate, because you know,
- 28:08Speaker 5: as much the band does trust me on certain things whatever,
- 28:13Speaker 5: I still don't want to be the person that that's
- 28:15Speaker 5: always kind of dictating like where we're going, what we're doing,
- 28:18Speaker 5: and Okay, we're working on this song now or whatever,
- 28:20Speaker 5: blah blah, and a lot of times they just like
- 28:23Speaker 5: when we even were at sound checks, like Okay, what song
- 28:25Speaker 5: are we playing, I'm.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Like, I don't know what song you want to play?
- 28:28Speaker 5: Like like I don't don't ask me all the time, right,
- 28:30Speaker 5: I don't want to and I don't get mad about it,
- 28:33Speaker 5: but it's just like, but it is very helpful to
- 28:36Speaker 5: have someone else there in the room that sort of
- 28:38Speaker 5: can just like be the sort of ring leader, right,
- 28:42Speaker 5: and I can just work on my part.
- 28:44Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean I think especially.
- 28:46Speaker 5: To like I've had like three years of sobriety and
- 28:49Speaker 5: just like a very clear minded now and focus, so
- 28:52Speaker 5: like it feels natural for me sometimes to like make
- 28:56Speaker 5: an order of things and like kind of keep track
- 28:58Speaker 5: of what's going on whatever. Like my memory is like
- 29:01Speaker 5: really crisp right now, you know what I mean. Sharp,
- 29:04Speaker 5: And so I'm able to remember things really well. And
- 29:07Speaker 5: like if I'm working with a a drum part whatever,
- 29:10Speaker 5: like like I can like literally like three minutes ago
- 29:13Speaker 5: you played this, but whatever, blah blah, and He'll be
- 29:15Speaker 5: like and I'll remember, you know things like or maybe
- 29:18Speaker 5: you know five years ago I would have not remembered.
- 29:21Speaker 5: So it's cool to use those things, right, especially when
- 29:26Speaker 5: we're working in work mode.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. And it keeps you it keeps you sharp.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I mean, that kind of stuff is just important for
- 29:32Speaker 2: overall health, for brain.
- 29:34Speaker 4: Health as we get older, totally.
- 29:36Speaker 2: You know, now that you're sober, you strike me as
- 29:41Speaker 2: someone who's sort of romantic and dreamy and emotional. And
- 29:46Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm just saying that because of
- 29:48Speaker 2: the type of music I know that you were into
- 29:50Speaker 2: as a kid, But.
- 29:51Speaker 4: That's actually a lot of it. I mean honestly.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I mean, I'm just like a sucker for like all
- 29:55Speaker 5: the stuff that I loved when I was a teenager. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 5: and I still like look back to that time in
- 30:03Speaker 5: my life as being like I can smell you know,
- 30:05Speaker 5: what the air was like and what like. I'm just
- 30:08Speaker 5: like really in tune with that time of my life
- 30:10Speaker 5: and I reflect upon that time of my life a lot.
- 30:12Speaker 5: And you know what's when I fell in love with music.
- 30:15Speaker 5: That's when I love That's probably one of the first
- 30:17Speaker 5: times I had a crush or this or that whatever.
- 30:19Speaker 5: All those things are like really like milestones of like
- 30:22Speaker 5: the human experience, So like I always draw from that.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Would it help you with the substances to like get
- 30:28Speaker 3: deeper into those feelings or can you still go there now?
- 30:31Speaker 3: Being sober?
- 30:32Speaker 5: Well, you know what I thought, I was like a
- 30:34Speaker 5: big lie. I think I kind of fooled myself into
- 30:36Speaker 5: believing that it was right. But yeah, but just created
- 30:39Speaker 5: being creative in general, Like you soon figure out that like, yeah,
- 30:43Speaker 5: I didn't need all that. I mean, not that I
- 30:44Speaker 5: didn't make good music, like you know, being altered here
- 30:48Speaker 5: and there, but and a lot of great music has
- 30:51Speaker 5: been made that way or with being influenced by mine,
- 30:54Speaker 5: altering substance whatever, but the fact that you know, you
- 30:58Speaker 5: go through your whole life because I was pretty much
- 31:00Speaker 5: since high school, I've been you know, like I was
- 31:02Speaker 5: telling her, really just drinking beers and whatever. I never
- 31:05Speaker 5: made music, you know, without that. So it was scary
- 31:08Speaker 5: at first, right to think can I do this? Is
- 31:10Speaker 5: it possible? And then once you do it, you're like.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Oh, of course it is, and yeah that's good.
- 31:14Speaker 5: All the clarity like I was talking about earlier comes
- 31:17Speaker 5: along and then it's like, oh well, I'm even like
- 31:19Speaker 5: I can do this, and I can do this, and
- 31:21Speaker 5: you just start to get it's it's everything's more in focus,
- 31:24Speaker 5: and then you can make sense of things a lot easier.
- 31:26Speaker 5: And but yeah, I mean I still get lost though, too.
- 31:29Speaker 5: I got I get I get lost in a good
- 31:31Speaker 5: melody and a good you know story. I mean, I
- 31:35Speaker 5: watch rom coms. That's that's one thing I do still
- 31:37Speaker 5: like on the bus every night when I go whatever.
- 31:40Speaker 4: I just like like romantic stories too.
- 31:45Speaker 3: What's the last rom com you've seen that's really good?
- 31:47Speaker 5: I mean I like dumb movies too, I like h
- 31:50Speaker 5: like Proposal stuff like that. Like I love some j
- 31:54Speaker 5: Lo movies. I love Yeah and Hathaway movies. I'll watch
- 31:58Speaker 5: like all this like I don't know, yeah, I don't
- 32:00Speaker 5: know why. I just like like those movies. I kind
- 32:02Speaker 5: of like like turn off part of my brain. I
- 32:04Speaker 5: guess whatever, and just like I don't know.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh, I want to ask you because I I know,
- 32:09Speaker 2: like as when you were a kid growing up, it
- 32:12Speaker 2: seems like with the band, you all of a sudden
- 32:13Speaker 2: just made the jump and became a singer. Did you
- 32:17Speaker 2: sing at all as a kid? Like were you inquire?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Were you like singing around the house, Like was it unexpected?
- 32:24Speaker 2: Like were your parents surprised at all of a sudden
- 32:26Speaker 2: you were a singer in a band?
- 32:28Speaker 5: I think so, yeah, especially because I was shy too,
- 32:30Speaker 5: like pretty shy when I was young, So like I
- 32:33Speaker 5: would sing along to records, but just to myself, right,
- 32:38Speaker 5: not in front of people. So it was kind of
- 32:40Speaker 5: out of nowhere, and really I wanted to I wanted
- 32:43Speaker 5: to play the drums. To me, that seemed like the
- 32:45Speaker 5: funnest thing ever, just like bang on these drums. I
- 32:48Speaker 5: really loved rhythm that I still do. But yeah, I
- 32:50Speaker 5: met Ad when I was in junior high school and
- 32:52Speaker 5: he was already like a brilliant drummer, like you know.
- 32:55Speaker 4: At twelve years older. I don't know what you were.
- 32:57Speaker 5: So so I needed to find something to do if
- 33:00Speaker 5: I wanted to be in the band with everybody. So yeah,
- 33:02Speaker 5: Stephan actually he's the one who's like, oh, You're gonna
- 33:04Speaker 5: be the singer and I was like okay, and he
- 33:07Speaker 5: said he actually said that, He's like I heard you.
- 33:09Speaker 5: How are you singing along with Danzig record or something whatever?
- 33:13Speaker 5: Before he day you could sing? And I was like
- 33:14Speaker 5: like like yeah, I was like okay. So it was
- 33:17Speaker 5: like kind of cool that, like, you know, he made
- 33:19Speaker 5: me believe that I could sing, and I really couldn't.
- 33:22Speaker 5: I mean, it was really like trial by error a
- 33:24Speaker 5: lot of it, you know, And it's kind of still is.
- 33:26Speaker 5: I mean, I still don't really know what I'm doing.
- 33:29Speaker 5: I just kind of I don't know, I guess just
- 33:31Speaker 5: figured out as I'm going still to this day.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Have you ever taken any lessons, like vocal lessons or
- 33:36Speaker 3: anything like that.
- 33:37Speaker 5: I did try at one point, and it was it
- 33:39Speaker 5: was it was just super awkward. I probably should have
- 33:42Speaker 5: stuck with it, but I but it was most things
- 33:44Speaker 5: where like I didn't like the and maybe it was
- 33:46Speaker 5: the teacher because like, you know, just probably like therapy,
- 33:48Speaker 5: it's like, you know, you have one bad experience and
- 33:50Speaker 5: then you can't say that it's all bad.
- 33:53Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Maybe it was just the actual thing, but it was
- 33:56Speaker 5: like it just felt really awkward to me. It was
- 33:59Speaker 5: like it's like they were trying to teach me how
- 34:01Speaker 5: to sing a certain way that just didn't feel like
- 34:04Speaker 5: natural to me. Yeah, I've always sort of just just
- 34:08Speaker 5: respond did, like sonically to what the music is kind
- 34:13Speaker 5: of you know, dishing out of me, and this is
- 34:15Speaker 5: what I'm w I'm responding with this sound. So like
- 34:18Speaker 5: if I was thinking too hard about it, I'd be like, well,
- 34:20Speaker 5: this doesn't even it's not even fun. It doesn't I
- 34:22Speaker 5: don't feel like I'm I'm naturally wanting to do. So
- 34:25Speaker 5: that was my excuse for not going back whatever, But
- 34:27Speaker 5: I'm sure there are techniques that I should.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Probably not not too old to learn. I mean I
- 34:32Speaker 4: did take from that.
- 34:34Speaker 5: I did take a lot of these like kind of
- 34:36Speaker 5: warm up exercises and things like that that are important
- 34:38Speaker 5: that I still use.
- 34:39Speaker 3: What do you do to protect your voice?
- 34:40Speaker 2: I know at one point you had like some serious
- 34:43Speaker 2: vocal issues just from screaming on stage, Like, well.
- 34:46Speaker 4: It could be transparent.
- 34:47Speaker 5: I think it was some scream but a lot of
- 34:49Speaker 5: just like living wild too, like you know, drugs and
- 34:52Speaker 5: alcohol and whatever and like not sleeping and you know,
- 34:56Speaker 5: and so I think I just liked whatever. But I've
- 34:59Speaker 5: noticed like the biggest thing for me is like proper sleep,
- 35:03Speaker 5: lots of fluids. I drink a lot of water, tea,
- 35:06Speaker 5: And there's really nothing I can do as far as
- 35:09Speaker 5: because I do scream and I do sing, and I
- 35:13Speaker 5: do it straight for you know, an hour and a
- 35:15Speaker 5: half two hours, you know, at night, and physically like
- 35:19Speaker 5: you have to rest. So it's like that's the main thing.
- 35:22Speaker 5: It's like after the show, I'm usually quiet. I usually
- 35:24Speaker 5: go on the bus and I don't talk much. Yeah,
- 35:26Speaker 5: And I'm really like I really love getting good I sleep.
- 35:29Speaker 5: And now that I don't drink, like I sleep really well,
- 35:31Speaker 5: and so yeah, waking up and feeling invigorated and then
- 35:34Speaker 5: kind of just like you know, do a little little
- 35:36Speaker 5: warm up.
- 35:37Speaker 4: I warm up in the shower.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 2: What do you do to sort of like get yourself
- 35:43Speaker 2: in the headspace and just like physically get ready to
- 35:46Speaker 2: be on stage and just to give all that energy.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Yeah. So music is always something that's like like gears
- 35:53Speaker 4: me up. So I listen.
- 35:54Speaker 5: I listen to music, and then I also make playlists
- 35:56Speaker 5: every day, which is really fun. So there's like a
- 35:59Speaker 5: thirty five minute time where they change over from the
- 36:03Speaker 5: band before us to when we go on. So so
- 36:05Speaker 5: I make a thirty five minute playlist that plays in
- 36:09Speaker 5: my dressing room, but it also plays in the in
- 36:12Speaker 5: the venue, and so the crowd here is what I'm
- 36:14Speaker 5: hearing backstage.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Oh that's cool.
- 36:16Speaker 5: It's kind of neat because I kind of feel like
- 36:17Speaker 5: it maybe puts us all in the same sort of
- 36:19Speaker 5: frame of mind before like the show show totally it
- 36:23Speaker 5: and it changes.
- 36:23Speaker 4: It's always like a pretty wild mix of stuff whatever.
- 36:26Speaker 5: But they tell me like three two one play, I'll
- 36:29Speaker 5: play it in my dressing room and it'll be playing
- 36:32Speaker 5: in the in the venue. And then I get in
- 36:34Speaker 5: the shower. Right then, the shower sort of just like
- 36:37Speaker 5: regenerates me. I think a little bit the steam helped
- 36:39Speaker 5: with my voice. Yeah, and then I get dressed, brush
- 36:42Speaker 5: my teeth, and then I'll do maybe I'll do some
- 36:45Speaker 5: push ups or whatever. I have a little rolling a
- 36:48Speaker 5: pham roller.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, stretch on that nice.
- 36:52Speaker 5: Yeah, just kind of maybe some jumping jacks and just
- 36:54Speaker 5: kind of like hide myself up. That's pretty much it.
- 36:56Speaker 3: And then what do you do when you get off stage?
- 36:58Speaker 3: Like how do you come down?
- 37:00Speaker 4: Same thing?
- 37:01Speaker 5: Shower right away. I think the shower in vigorates before
- 37:03Speaker 5: the show. And then obviously when I got stage, I'm
- 37:05Speaker 5: soaking wet. Usually just get in the shower and then
- 37:07Speaker 5: you know, put on dry clothes. And usually they bring
- 37:11Speaker 5: me food in because I don't eat usually like I
- 37:15Speaker 5: don't know, four to five hours before we go on stage,
- 37:17Speaker 5: because that's weird. But I'm never hungry when I get
- 37:19Speaker 5: off stage too, So yeah, get me fooded, and I'm
- 37:22Speaker 5: always just like just take it to the bus. I'll
- 37:23Speaker 5: eat it later. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but
- 37:26Speaker 5: but yeah, I usually call home and check in and
- 37:29Speaker 5: then I've been going to pretty much straight you know,
- 37:32Speaker 5: to the bus. I'm pretty boring, man, I don't like
- 37:34Speaker 5: it's not as crazy as at least it was at
- 37:37Speaker 5: one time, right, Yeah. I don't drink anymore, so it's like,
- 37:40Speaker 5: you know, I don't have the need to like go
- 37:42Speaker 5: out and socialize too much.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Yes, Are you like peopled out at that point? Like
- 37:47Speaker 2: do you want to be by yourself?
- 37:49Speaker 4: Kind of?
- 37:50Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 37:50Speaker 5: I mean I really do enjoy like the silence of
- 37:52Speaker 5: just like you know, being on the bus and it's
- 37:56Speaker 5: just on our bus now it's just myself stuff and
- 37:59Speaker 5: then our assistant and our photographer, so it's just four
- 38:03Speaker 5: of us on there.
- 38:03Speaker 4: So it's really quiet.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Nice.
- 38:05Speaker 5: Yeah, watch movies, play video games, kind of just really
- 38:09Speaker 5: really relax.
- 38:10Speaker 2: When you call home and you talk to family, Like
- 38:13Speaker 2: if you talk to your wife or whatever, like do
- 38:14Speaker 2: you tell her about the show or do you just
- 38:16Speaker 2: talk about regular stuff?
- 38:18Speaker 4: Yeah? I mean she always asked me how was your show?
- 38:20Speaker 5: And like, my it's like, you know, when somebody ask
- 38:22Speaker 5: how are you always say oh, fine, you know, at
- 38:24Speaker 5: the show, whether there's stuff going on, I always.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Just say, oh it was fine. Yeah. I won't get
- 38:27Speaker 4: into too many details of it. The show's happened.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Great, But but you know, sometimes there'll be a little
- 38:32Speaker 5: like an audio thing or something will go haywire. Like
- 38:35Speaker 5: last night we were playing a show and there's a
- 38:37Speaker 5: few songs that I played guitar on that I use
- 38:40Speaker 5: the RF mic on, and it wasn't turned on, so
- 38:43Speaker 5: like the first verse, I'm like singing into it, and
- 38:45Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, there's nothing coming out of this. So
- 38:47Speaker 5: that you know, Tech runs on stage and he goes
- 38:49Speaker 5: and he like turns the mic on. Okay, there you go.
- 38:51Speaker 5: It wasn't turned on, but so like.
- 38:54Speaker 3: It's like, come on, dude, one oh one, yeah, turn
- 38:56Speaker 3: it on.
- 38:57Speaker 4: You know.
- 38:57Speaker 5: It's one of the things where like I think years
- 38:59Speaker 5: and years ago, I probably would have like lost it,
- 39:01Speaker 5: you know, where Yeah, I think my patience is like
- 39:04Speaker 5: a little better these days where I'm just like, Okay,
- 39:06Speaker 5: shit happens, and and uh just laugh it off, and
- 39:10Speaker 5: you know, I think people understand. I think I think
- 39:12Speaker 5: probably back in the day, I would have like maybe
- 39:14Speaker 5: felt embarrassed or like just Matt exactly like that's one
- 39:17Speaker 5: on one, What the hell I got mad about it? Whatever,
- 39:20Speaker 5: But it's like it's a mistake, and yeah, it was
- 39:22Speaker 5: like the first half of the verse was.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Not there, but yeah, and it's probably like so loud
- 39:27Speaker 2: in there anyway, Like maybe people don't really notice, you know,
- 39:30Speaker 2: Oh I.
- 39:31Speaker 4: Think they realized. Oh really yeah, yeah, I think they
- 39:35Speaker 4: definitely realized.
- 39:35Speaker 2: But yeah, that's part of the live experience though. It's
- 39:39Speaker 2: nice to see, like, you know, bloopers and stuff like.
- 39:43Speaker 4: That that we don't you know, use playback. How about that?
- 39:46Speaker 1: Well, let's break when we're back with Lea Rose's conversation
- 39:49Speaker 1: with Gina Moreno.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Going back to the Deftones album covers, what are your
- 39:58Speaker 2: would you say or your top five favorite album covers
- 40:01Speaker 2: from Deaftones?
- 40:02Speaker 5: From Deaftones, I like the Quino Yo Kan cover, which
- 40:06Speaker 5: is a photo taken by the the artist Futura.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 40:11Speaker 5: Yeah, it was like he we had talked with him
- 40:14Speaker 5: about designing an album cover for us, and then we
- 40:17Speaker 5: did a couple of different things, but ended up just
- 40:20Speaker 5: gravitating towards this photo of his, which was like he
- 40:23Speaker 5: took it in this hotel somewhere in China or something.
- 40:26Speaker 4: But the picture itself, like you can't really tell. It
- 40:29Speaker 4: almost looks like outer space.
- 40:30Speaker 5: It's just like it's really like you got there at
- 40:32Speaker 5: it whatever and kind of figure out what if it's
- 40:34Speaker 5: the actual place and it's like I think it's a
- 40:36Speaker 5: view through this class through towards the elevator or something.
- 40:39Speaker 5: But I just it looks kind of otherworldly and and
- 40:42Speaker 5: it's just like it's pretty and I like that cover
- 40:44Speaker 5: a lot.
- 40:46Speaker 4: What else? What are the album cover do? I like?
- 40:49Speaker 3: What about around the fur Man?
- 40:51Speaker 4: Honestly, like.
- 40:54Speaker 5: Now I can appreciate it whatever, but like you know,
- 40:57Speaker 5: and it's so weird that like even like as far
- 41:00Speaker 5: as like our merchandise goes, like that T shirt with
- 41:02Speaker 5: that album cover on it, like it is like one
- 41:04Speaker 5: of the biggest sellers, like so many, but it's such
- 41:06Speaker 5: a random photo and it makes no sense at all.
- 41:08Speaker 5: And it was, honestly just like we were our photographer.
- 41:10Speaker 5: The guy who was doing all our photos for that record,
- 41:13Speaker 5: this guy named Rick Cassick, and he was from this
- 41:17Speaker 5: magazine big brother from It was a skate magazine, and
- 41:20Speaker 5: he and they ended up going out to do like
- 41:22Speaker 5: Jackass and all that stuff whatever.
- 41:23Speaker 4: So he's like in all the Jackasses stuff like that.
- 41:25Speaker 5: But he was like the videographer photographer, and he was
- 41:27Speaker 5: a good friend of ours, and he came to Seattle
- 41:30Speaker 5: when we were recording that record, and he took all
- 41:33Speaker 5: the a bunch of photos of us and then just
- 41:36Speaker 5: photos of us hanging out like outside of the studio.
- 41:39Speaker 5: So that record we were like all like twenty two,
- 41:43Speaker 5: maybe we were still pretty young, and like when I
- 41:46Speaker 5: look back at that record, it was like I don't
- 41:48Speaker 5: remember hardly any of actually like recording the record, I
- 41:51Speaker 5: remember everything.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Outside of it, Like just like we were just like wild, like.
- 41:55Speaker 5: Out every night, partying, driving around, listening to the roughs
- 41:58Speaker 5: from the day and like that album cover was like
- 42:03Speaker 5: after the we had like this jacuzzi at our apartment,
- 42:06Speaker 5: the same one that were me and Haven and stuff,
- 42:09Speaker 5: and we have the answer machine. Think there was a yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 5: a hot tub downstairs.
- 42:14Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 42:14Speaker 5: So every night we'd like, you know, after at the
- 42:16Speaker 5: end of the night, after all our bar happened, we'd
- 42:18Speaker 5: go with everybody we'd meet from the bar, let's go
- 42:20Speaker 5: back to our players.
- 42:21Speaker 4: We're gonna gota.
- 42:22Speaker 5: And that photo was just like from a random night
- 42:24Speaker 5: there or whatever, and it was like it got mixed
- 42:26Speaker 5: in with all the other photos from the thing. So
- 42:29Speaker 5: when they came and spreading all the photos out for
- 42:30Speaker 5: the album cover, that picture was there and like it
- 42:34Speaker 5: was literally just like everybody pointed at that one.
- 42:37Speaker 3: It's such a cool photo.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's very nineties too, so nineties, so
- 42:43Speaker 4: it like really represents that time. It's kind of funny.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Do you know who that girl is?
- 42:47Speaker 4: I mean kind of she was.
- 42:50Speaker 5: She was a friend who we befriended while we were
- 42:53Speaker 5: there in Seattle, and I did see a thing the
- 42:55Speaker 5: other day.
- 42:56Speaker 4: It was cool that she was.
- 42:57Speaker 5: They showed like you know then and now, so it
- 42:59Speaker 5: was her Like now, she's probably our age now too,
- 43:01Speaker 5: like you know, maybe late forties, early fifties, and she's
- 43:05Speaker 5: holding up the album cover and she's like smiling, this
- 43:07Speaker 5: is me, you know what I mean? Whatever when she
- 43:09Speaker 5: when she was young as well, but who knew, right,
- 43:12Speaker 5: It's like that like even when she was asked, hey,
- 43:14Speaker 5: we want to use this for the album cover, but
- 43:15Speaker 5: then thinking that like thirty something years later whenever, whatever,
- 43:19Speaker 5: it is that like that would be such an iconic
- 43:23Speaker 5: photo with like T shirts and all these like teenagers
- 43:26Speaker 5: now wearing that picture on their T shirt.
- 43:29Speaker 3: It is very nineties. That's such a good call.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Like it's kind of like has like that kids like
- 43:33Speaker 2: the movie Kids that asthetic or even like pre American apparel.
- 43:38Speaker 5: Totally, and it has but like like the fish eye
- 43:40Speaker 5: kind of lens of fact whatever. So it's like, you know,
- 43:43Speaker 5: it's very like kind of like Beastie Boys. He kind
- 43:45Speaker 5: of like go to like nineties kind of like.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Flair, do you ever think back on those times,
- 43:51Speaker 2: like the debaucherous times are just like, oh my god,
- 43:53Speaker 2: I can't believe I survived that.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Totally. I had a lot of good time. I mean
- 43:57Speaker 5: we had fun. Yeah, we were kids. We were probably
- 44:00Speaker 5: doing what we should have been doing, right. I mean,
- 44:02Speaker 5: for the most point, we were like in a rock band,
- 44:05Speaker 5: like you know, touring the world, like going places and
- 44:08Speaker 5: doing different things like all out like walking the streets
- 44:12Speaker 5: Paris or whatever at three o'clock in the morning, going
- 44:14Speaker 5: into you know, different bars and meeting random people.
- 44:17Speaker 4: And doing whatever.
- 44:18Speaker 5: Was like yeah, I mean like you know, let's have fun.
- 44:21Speaker 5: And it was my youth and whatever. But uh, you know,
- 44:23Speaker 5: at some point, yeah, it's like I realized that I'm
- 44:27Speaker 5: not once people that can just like just like have
- 44:29Speaker 5: a little bit of fun and then just like you know,
- 44:32Speaker 5: go to sleep, Like.
- 44:32Speaker 4: I just like I'm having fun, Let's keep going.
- 44:35Speaker 5: And that's I think what like the definition of like
- 44:37Speaker 5: someone who's an alcoholic, right, So I had to learn
- 44:40Speaker 5: that I don't denounce like a. I think a is
- 44:43Speaker 5: great for people who especially works for I don't do it,
- 44:45Speaker 5: but I don't live under the pretense of that, like
- 44:49Speaker 5: you know, I'll never have a drink again either. I
- 44:50Speaker 5: think that's kind of helped me stay sober too, is
- 44:52Speaker 5: because like I don't feel like, oh my god, I'm
- 44:55Speaker 5: never gonna have a drinking Like I honestly like want
- 44:58Speaker 5: to be in my seventies sitting on my porch, you know,
- 45:02Speaker 5: as an older man drinking a beer, petting my dog
- 45:05Speaker 5: or whatever.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Like I can foresee that at some point in my future.
- 45:08Speaker 5: But I just like, like, right now where I'm at, I
- 45:11Speaker 5: feel good. I'm on tour, I'm out here, like I
- 45:13Speaker 5: like doing this sober. I like this part of life
- 45:15Speaker 5: and doing it. But so I don't look at it
- 45:17Speaker 5: as like and I'll be all thing and you know whatever,
- 45:20Speaker 5: this and that whatever. But I just know it works
- 45:21Speaker 5: now and I feel good, so I'm just gonna keep
- 45:23Speaker 5: doing it.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes sense. Living through what you've lived through,
- 45:27Speaker 3: experience what you've experienced.
- 45:29Speaker 2: As a father, were you like extra protective because you
- 45:32Speaker 2: know what's out there, or were you sort of like
- 45:36Speaker 2: let your kids experience things the way that you experience things.
- 45:40Speaker 4: I mean, you know, luckily that my kids haven't tested
- 45:43Speaker 4: me that bad. I mean, I have good kids. I'm
- 45:46Speaker 4: so lucky for that, especially my two older sons, who
- 45:49Speaker 4: you know, they like, you know, and everyone.
- 45:53Speaker 5: If you talk about like like the parts that I
- 45:56Speaker 5: was probably that I'm probably ashamed about now is whatever
- 45:58Speaker 5: is like you know, when my kids were coming of age,
- 46:01Speaker 5: like when I used to live in Soccer, when I
- 46:03Speaker 5: used to have like a I had a bar in
- 46:04Speaker 5: Myles had a tiki bar downstairs, which was awesome.
- 46:06Speaker 4: I loved it. Yeah, but it was.
- 46:08Speaker 5: Like, you know, every night, like my friends would be
- 46:10Speaker 5: there playing records, you know, sitting at the bar just
- 46:13Speaker 5: drink or whatever, and my kids would be upstairs, you know,
- 46:16Speaker 5: and I would like, you know, what do you guys
- 46:18Speaker 5: want for dinner?
- 46:18Speaker 1: Oh?
- 46:18Speaker 4: We want Chinese food? Okay, I order them Chinese food.
- 46:22Speaker 5: They want a new video game, Just buy a new
- 46:23Speaker 5: video game kind of whatever, and they just kind of
- 46:25Speaker 5: like you know, spent a lot of hours like on
- 46:28Speaker 5: their own, just like you know, doing the same thing
- 46:30Speaker 5: as I like upstairs, hanging out with their friends, playing
- 46:32Speaker 5: video games, eating, you know, whatever they wanted and whatever.
- 46:35Speaker 5: And now in retrospect, it's being like, man, it's like
- 46:38Speaker 5: and I was busy with my friends downstairs, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 5: still like living like I was on tour kind of thing.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 46:44Speaker 5: So now in retrospect, I can't get those times back
- 46:47Speaker 5: with my kids when they were at a certain age
- 46:49Speaker 5: where I wish I had spent more time with them, right.
- 46:51Speaker 3: But you were young though, when you've I watched it.
- 46:53Speaker 5: I mean when I was twenty years old, when my
- 46:55Speaker 5: son was personal was more so I was pretty young myself. Yeah,
- 46:59Speaker 5: but even in spite of that, like, I'm so lucky
- 47:02Speaker 5: that my kids like have grown up and have been
- 47:05Speaker 5: very responsible and are like upstanding sins and you know,
- 47:09Speaker 5: they they work and they they hustle still and they
- 47:14Speaker 5: don't expect like you know, just they're good. They're a
- 47:17Speaker 5: good hearted kid. And yeah, my daughter is super smart.
- 47:21Speaker 5: She's like she she's in college and she she's in college. Yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 5: she's she's a junior in Calle. She's going to be
- 47:27Speaker 5: twenty one next month. Too, So like, oh, now they're gone,
- 47:30Speaker 5: you know, because everybody's like, oh, you're empty nests. I'm like,
- 47:33Speaker 5: Nicks do all dogs like you can't. I can't just
- 47:35Speaker 5: do whatever I want whenever I want. Like, the dogs
- 47:37Speaker 5: are like a lot.
- 47:38Speaker 3: How many dogs you have?
- 47:39Speaker 5: So I have two, you know, little pugs and their
- 47:41Speaker 5: rescues and they're they're they're awesome. But yeah, they're like
- 47:44Speaker 5: a lot of work in there. But I love it.
- 47:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:47Speaker 5: Maybe deep down I don't want to be an empty nester.
- 47:49Speaker 5: I think that I have something to be responsible for,
- 47:52Speaker 5: like all the time. It's like something that I need.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Yeah, have you guys started working on the next album yet?
- 47:58Speaker 4: Oh? I don't know.
- 47:59Speaker 5: No, I don't really I feel I mean the record
- 48:01Speaker 5: just came out like three weeks ago, two weeks ago.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Yeah, well, sometimes there's like stuff left over, and no.
- 48:07Speaker 4: We do. We do have some luck.
- 48:09Speaker 5: And my idea would be maybe if there's like a
- 48:12Speaker 5: soundtrack opportunity or something like that, I think it'd be
- 48:14Speaker 5: fun to go back and finish those things up, if
- 48:16Speaker 5: for a specific thing or something like that. But but
- 48:19Speaker 5: as far as I going in to make like a
- 48:20Speaker 5: complete new record, I mean that's like at the long process. Yeah, yeah,
- 48:25Speaker 5: I'm going to enjoy, like, yeah, just like not doing
- 48:28Speaker 5: music and playing I started playing video games again, which
- 48:31Speaker 5: is kind of Yeah. I didn't allow myself to play
- 48:33Speaker 5: video games while I was working on music because I
- 48:36Speaker 5: just feel like, if I have time to do this,
- 48:38Speaker 5: I should definitely have time.
- 48:39Speaker 4: To do it. My job is, so what games do
- 48:41Speaker 4: you play right now? I'm just I'm playing these Star Wars.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Like there's this platform game Falling Order. I think it's
- 48:48Speaker 4: about for a while.
- 48:48Speaker 5: There's a new one now that I but I want
- 48:50Speaker 5: to play the beat the first one first.
- 48:52Speaker 4: So it's just kind of like an adventure game. You going.
- 48:54Speaker 5: There's like puzzles and stuff and I got to figure out,
- 48:56Speaker 5: which is kind of cool because I feel like I'm
- 48:58Speaker 5: still using my brain and figuring out.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:01Speaker 5: But at the same time, it's like I'm just like
- 49:03Speaker 5: getting to be a little kidding in and just like it's
- 49:05Speaker 5: not music. As much as I love doing music, sometimes
- 49:09Speaker 5: it's like it's kind of healthy, I think, to like
- 49:10Speaker 5: do something.
- 49:11Speaker 4: That's not music.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I was watching an old interview with you, I think
- 49:15Speaker 2: it was from ninety eight, and it was from some
- 49:17Speaker 2: like Dutch TV show.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Anyway, you were in a.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Pool hall and you were talking about the thing that
- 49:22Speaker 2: was most important to you was that the band had longevity,
- 49:28Speaker 2: and you were like, you didn't care about the sound
- 49:30Speaker 2: or the genre that you were placed in. The only
- 49:32Speaker 2: thing that was important was longevity. And I was thinking,
- 49:35Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, so you achieved it, Like here you are.
- 49:38Speaker 2: How many years later it's twenty twenty five and you
- 49:41Speaker 2: guys are bigger than ever. Does that feel like a
- 49:45Speaker 2: miracle in your mind? Or does it feel like it
- 49:48Speaker 2: was written? Like no, wonder.
- 49:51Speaker 5: It definitely feels I don't know, a mirror. It's crazy
- 49:56Speaker 5: to think about it, really is. I mean, it all
- 49:58Speaker 5: happened so gradual, though, I mean obviously a lot more
- 50:02Speaker 5: happened over the last few years kind of without our doing,
- 50:04Speaker 5: you know, But like our career itself, like we were
- 50:08Speaker 5: never like one day just kind of going and the
- 50:10Speaker 5: next day we were the biggest band in the world.
- 50:12Speaker 5: We've always started gradually growing as a band. Yes, we've
- 50:15Speaker 5: had some like lulls in our career, for sure, But
- 50:18Speaker 5: to look in retrospect now, for sure, it's like whoa Like,
- 50:21Speaker 5: you know, last night we're playing a soult out arena
- 50:23Speaker 5: and I'm looking out there and everybody's holding up their
- 50:26Speaker 5: camera lights, are their their phone lights whatever, And just
- 50:29Speaker 5: I'm like mesmerized by how many because you really get
- 50:32Speaker 5: to notice when they do that, like how many people
- 50:34Speaker 5: are up yeah, two hundred yards away, like you know,
- 50:37Speaker 5: in a top back seat at a concert. And it's
- 50:40Speaker 5: just like this is insane and seeing the demographic could
- 50:44Speaker 5: be all over the board, across the board, parents and
- 50:47Speaker 5: their kids and you know, so no, even if I
- 50:51Speaker 5: did say that back then, I definitely didn't expect it
- 50:53Speaker 5: to go to fruition.
- 50:55Speaker 4: So I'm like bugged out by it for sure.
- 50:57Speaker 3: It's awesome though, Yeah, awesome.
- 50:59Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much for doing this. I appreciate it.
