- 0:11Hello, friends, It's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 11th of June and we've hit the middle of the week.
- 0:18It's hump day and I hope, I hope this week is going well for you.
- 0:22And oh boy, I don't know about you, but this time of year, as
- 0:26things kind of reach this dark point, we are heading toward the
- 0:29winter solstice here and things really do slow down and people
- 0:33tend to start to hibernate. And boy, we live in a world that
- 0:36is so type A. So go, go, go that we feel
- 0:39guilty when we stop and guilty when we take a bit of time just
- 0:43to be. Let us put away that craziness
- 0:47and actually give ourselves a little bit of permission just to
- 0:50stop and just to be. And particularly as we read this
- 0:55week, as the the speed of our reading slows down and we just
- 0:59spend this time unpacking and revelling in God's intention for
- 1:05us to focus on Him and Him alone as our God.
- 1:10Maybe this is a good time for us in our life just to slow down
- 1:14and take stock and focus on placing God at the number one
- 1:19spot. Wonder what that looks like for
- 1:21you, friend? Wonder what that looks like for
- 1:23me? Not a bad thing to contemplate.
- 1:25And as we do that, let's continue to hear how God wants
- 1:29that to shape the lives of His people as they enter this land.
- 1:33As we read together Deuteronomy Chapter 7,
- 1:48when the Lord your God brings you into the land you're about
- 1:51to enter and occupy, He will clear away many nations ahead of
- 1:55you, The Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites,
- 2:00Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
- 2:04These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you.
- 2:09When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and
- 2:12you conquer them, you must completely destroy them.
- 2:16Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy.
- 2:21You must not intermarry with them.
- 2:23Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and
- 2:26daughters, for they will lead your children away from Me to
- 2:30worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will
- 2:34burn against you, and He will quickly destroy you.
- 2:38This is what you must do. You must break down their Pagan
- 2:42altars and shatter their sacred pillars.
- 2:45Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols, for you are a
- 2:51holy people who belong to the Lord your God.
- 2:55Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to
- 3:00be His own special treasure. The Lord did not set his heart
- 3:05on you and choose you because you were more numerous than
- 3:08other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations.
- 3:12Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and He was
- 3:17keeping the oath He had sworn to your ancestors.
- 3:21That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from
- 3:24your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king
- 3:28of Egypt. Understand, therefore, that the
- 3:31Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps
- 3:37His covenant for 1000 generations and lavishes His
- 3:42unfailing love on those who love Him and obey His commands.
- 3:47But He does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who
- 3:50reject Him. Therefore, you must obey all
- 3:54these commands, decrees, and regulations I'm giving you
- 3:57today. Have you listened to these
- 4:00regulations and faithfully obey them?
- 4:03The Lord your God will keep His covenant of unfailing love with
- 4:07you, as He promised with an oath to your ancestors.
- 4:11He will love you and bless you, and He will give you many
- 4:15children. He will give fertility to your
- 4:18land and your animals. When you arrive in the land He
- 4:22swore to give you ancestors, you will have large harvests of
- 4:26grain, new wine and olive oil, and great herds of cattle,
- 4:31sheep, and goats. You will be blessed above all
- 4:34the nations of the earth. None of your men or women will
- 4:38be childless, and all your livestock will bear young, and
- 4:43the Lord will protect you from all sickness.
- 4:46He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew
- 4:49in Egypt, but He will inflict them on all your enemies.
- 4:54You must destroy all the nations the Lord your God hands over to
- 4:58you. Show them no mercy, and do not
- 5:01worship their gods, or they will trap you.
- 5:06Perhaps you will think to yourselves, how can we even
- 5:09conquer these nations that are so much more powerful than we
- 5:12are? But don't be afraid of them.
- 5:16Just remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all
- 5:20the land of Egypt. Remember the great terrors the
- 5:23Lord your God sent against them. You saw it all with your own
- 5:27eyes. And remember the miraculous
- 5:30signs and wonders, and the strong hand and powerful arm
- 5:35with which he brought you out of Egypt.
- 5:38The Lord your God will use this same power against all the
- 5:42people you fear, and then the Lord your God will send terror
- 5:46to drive out the few survivors still hiding from you.
- 5:50No, do not be afraid of those nations, for the Lord your God
- 5:55is among you, and He is a great and awesome God.
- 5:59The Lord your God will drive those nations out ahead of you
- 6:03little by little. You will not clear them away all
- 6:06at once, otherwise the wild animals would multiply too
- 6:10quickly for you. But the Lord your God will hand
- 6:13them over to you. He will throw them into complete
- 6:16confusion until they are destroyed.
- 6:20He will put their kings in your power, and you will erase their
- 6:24names from the face of the earth.
- 6:27No one will be able to stand against you, and you will
- 6:30destroy them all. You must burn their idols in
- 6:34fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them.
- 6:39You must not take it, or it will become a trap for you, for it is
- 6:43detestable to the Lord your God. Do not bring any detestable
- 6:48objects into your home, for then you will be destroyed just like
- 6:52them. You must utterly detest such
- 6:55things, for they are set apart for destruction.
- 7:11Oh Jesus, in your generosity, in your love, you have set us
- 7:14apart. You have given us that gift of
- 7:18faith and counted it as righteousness to us, our Lord,
- 7:24as you set us apart. And you claim us as your own
- 7:27special possession, just like God told his people all those
- 7:32years ago. But I pray that we would be
- 7:36transformed and that we would choose day by day to live as
- 7:42your people and as Moses urges the Israelites as they enter
- 7:47that foreign land, that they would not be seduced by worship
- 7:51of the gods of that place. And Lord, I pray that for us
- 7:56that we are not seduced by the gods of our world, by the gods
- 8:01of success and wealth and fame and popularity, but Lord, that
- 8:08we can rest in you and our identity as your beloved
- 8:13children, and that that is so much more than enough.
- 8:18Lord, I thank you for the good things you give us.
- 8:21They are just such a blessing to us.
- 8:23But I pray that they always stand below you in importance to
- 8:27us. So we recommit ourselves to you
- 8:32as your special people, chosen and loved by you, and will you
- 8:38worship you, our mighty God and our wonderful Saviour.
- 8:44And we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
