[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Lorentz podcast.
0:18
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm your host David, and this is our into the West series, and with me today, our Loremaster Brian aka Brian 863, and his sister Lisa aka Red Zippy, to our community co-hosts.
0:36
[SPEAKER_02]: So, well, and today we are here to light a candle for Sam Neal,
0:45
[SPEAKER_02]: This is a little bit of a different format than we've done before for into the West.
0:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Lisa, this was sort of your idea in terms of like, hey, let's not do a big thing, but let's just acknowledge and discuss briefly.
1:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, exactly.
1:01
[SPEAKER_01]: There was such a response, both within our discord community and then just, you know, in my little world on social media and among friends and stuff.
1:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, you know, he really made an impact, you know, he's just a great guy.
1:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And so let's just chat about him.
1:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Like we said, and light a candle and just talk about, you know, his roles a bit.
1:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I would started watching Jurassic Park again.
1:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we jumped on the pod, so I don't know where were you guys when you first saw Jurassic Park in the movie theater.
1:35
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even remember when it came out.
1:37
[SPEAKER_02]: What year was it to that it was out?
1:41
[SPEAKER_05]: 93.
1:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's sound about right 93.
1:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep 93.
1:45
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
1:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
1:47
[SPEAKER_05]: So I was, I think, staying just finished grad school in history.
1:54
[SPEAKER_05]: I think I was staying with our father and he probably took me over to see the movie and we were blown away.
2:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and mid-90s, early mid-90s I was in Seattle, and that was just sort of a, I don't know what I was doing
2:18
[SPEAKER_02]: I'd come back from a big overseas trip and I think it was doing community college and just trying to figure a bunch of stuff out.
2:24
[SPEAKER_02]: So I must have seen it in the theater because that's what you did back then was you go to these things and see us.
2:31
[SPEAKER_02]: I did rewatch it recently because we had that big Jurassic Park going Jurassic that was that podcast I did with
2:39
[SPEAKER_02]: asher from heat death and tanzi from going rogue.
2:42
[SPEAKER_02]: You talked about the Jurassic franchise.
2:45
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I had recently rewatched that.
2:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, yeah, the iconic scene of him taking off his glasses is a thing that's stuck in my mind.
2:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Real quick, before we get in even further, I just want to make sure that everyone knows if you want to get in touch with us, our email for this show is into the West at thelorhounds.com.

3:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Otherwise, today, really, Brian and Lisa, this is sort of you guys driving the bus.
3:31
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's carry on talking about the Mr. Neil.
3:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Very good.
3:35
[SPEAKER_01]: So Brian, I'll let you kick it off as the historian.
3:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Tell us a little bit about Sam O'Neill.
3:41
[SPEAKER_01]: See, I see.
3:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I knew I was going to do that.
3:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Sam O'Neill.
3:45
[SPEAKER_05]: So I'm O'Neill.
3:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Sam O'Neill.
3:48
[SPEAKER_05]: Although he was born in Northern Ireland.
3:52
[SPEAKER_05]: So September 14th, 1947, he's often described as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
4:01
[SPEAKER_05]: and he had an English mother and his Zeeland father who was stationed there as an army officer interesting enough.
4:08
[SPEAKER_05]: So the family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1954 and Sam grew up mostly around Christchurch and Dundin he adopted the nickname Sam as a boy because there were too many other Nigel's around because he thought Nigel sounded a bit precocious for a New Zealand
4:31
[SPEAKER_05]: He also dealt with a stutter as a child, which is not, yeah, which is not the last or the first actor to go through that, and something he later said made him prefer listening to talking.
4:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I see that.
4:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, he has that certain quality of just silence, you know.
4:51
[SPEAKER_05]: He studied at the University of Canterbury, drifted away from intended law career and found his way into theater.
4:59
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, acting in university productions and eventually joining Wellington's Downstage Theater has a professional actor for $25 a week.
5:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, big bucks.
5:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
5:12
[SPEAKER_01]: So I know his screen career started in the early 70s with small New Zealand TV films and then he broke through internationally with sleeping dogs in 1977 and that was the first New Zealand film to get wide overseas distribution.
5:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So that led him to Australia.
5:34
[SPEAKER_01]: where my brilliant career in 1979, opposite Judy Davis, made him an international name.
5:41
[SPEAKER_01]: He was very honky in that movie, Side Note.
5:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the eighties.
5:45
[SPEAKER_02]: He's sleeping dogs right now.
5:46
[SPEAKER_02]: I've never heard of it.
5:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
5:49
[SPEAKER_02]: He's the poster art with him as, yeah, he's looking pretty honky there.
5:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
5:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
5:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
5:55
[SPEAKER_02]: That's under hand.
5:56
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
5:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody listening do yourself a favor and go go.
6:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so Steve and make sure you should do sleeping dogs Sam kneel because there's a video game apparently called sleeping dogs.
6:07
[SPEAKER_02]: So you got a good the other one But yeah, go check out a young Sam kneel.
6:10
[SPEAKER_01]: I know I was googling possession which he did in 1981 and you really have to be specific in your Google search It feels right.
6:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's right
6:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so really in the 80s, it cemented his range, um, uh, he played the grown-up, Damian Thorn, aka the devil, uh, or the devil's son, actually, in Oman 3, the final conflict in 1981.
6:33
[SPEAKER_02]: No idea about that.
6:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
6:35
[SPEAKER_01]: That's so interesting.
6:37
[SPEAKER_01]: and then he took a strange, celebrated turn in the cult film possession, which I have not yet watched.
6:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I have to be in a certain mood, you know, for that.
6:48
[SPEAKER_01]: It's long been on my list and I really do want to watch that.
6:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And then he won a Golden Globe nomination playing real life spy Sydney Riley in the mini series,
7:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was reportedly considered for the role of James Bond around this time before Timothy Dalton got the cast.
7:11
[SPEAKER_01]: That could maybe see that.
7:13
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
7:15
[SPEAKER_05]: And the question to the group is would he have made a good James Bond?
7:20
[SPEAKER_05]: And I
7:21
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I would say yes because the person that he turned it down, but they hired Pierce Brosnan, who kind of looks like him, right?
7:32
[SPEAKER_05]: They kind of, I think in a way, have that certain kind of grizzly, I don't know, grizzly, but just body.
7:38
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
7:39
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
7:39
[SPEAKER_05]: Exactly.
7:41
[SPEAKER_05]: So I could totally see him.
7:43
[SPEAKER_05]: I think, you know, just pushing Pierce Brosnan aside, like he never happened.
7:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, he would be more swath, I think, more modern, I think, than Roger Moore.
7:57
[SPEAKER_02]: I think this we do is to not also think of him as the Jurassic Park era.
8:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you got to break that, visit from your mind and put him as a younger Samuel with that sort of ruling swagger still.
8:13
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, not exactly.
8:15
[SPEAKER_02]: Not a middle-aged pudgy dad guy.
8:18
[SPEAKER_05]: That's right, exactly, good point.
8:19
[SPEAKER_05]: And if you see, you know, Damian of the Omen III, you got this very sophisticated dapper, I think you played in a bassar.
8:30
[SPEAKER_05]: So you can, it's not a big leap.
8:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's not big lead by think again, I deferred you Brian because I am, you know, don't at me, but I'm not a James Bond fan.
8:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I was, I was when Daniel Craig, you know, watched it and you were reason I watched it was because of Daniel Craig, you know, as one would do.
8:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
8:54
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I mean, I think if you go back far enough in the 007, they're kind of pulpy and comic booky.
9:01
[SPEAKER_02]: It's the middle years and especially some of the Roger more years where it's achy.
9:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's gross.
9:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, we can move on.
9:08
[SPEAKER_02]: We can move on.
9:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
9:09
[SPEAKER_05]: So he kept working steadily and it will eclectically across genres for decades like horror in the mountain of madness, event horizon to I think of the movies that discord folks talked about comedy by centennial man, the dish, and prestigious television.
9:27
[SPEAKER_05]: Merlin the tutors, piggy blinders, a little bit the tutors I've heard before, but the other two I'm a little
9:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I stepped in it I haven't not I've only watched a couple of episodes, but it's got a that show has a following so don't don't get added, Brian.
9:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, be nice to be keep behind your screen.
9:52
[SPEAKER_02]: We don't want to leave some subscribers.
9:53
[SPEAKER_05]: We don't.
9:56
[SPEAKER_05]: plus a memorable comic role in the hunt for the wilder people, 2016, and cameo's as an actor playing Odin in the Thor films.
10:09
[SPEAKER_05]: So Lisa, what is the off screen, light for him?
10:12
[SPEAKER_01]: He was definitely remembered as a very, very kind, generous, good person.
10:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I liked him because, well, for many reasons, but he did run a winery, two patents in Central Otago.
10:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, he was just known for being warm, self-deprecating public persona, including a much loved social media presence centered on his on his farm animals.
10:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, he married a makeup artist Norika Watanabe.
10:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna slaughter that name.
10:45
[SPEAKER_01]: In 1989, uh, they separated in 2017 and had children from earlier and later relationships.
10:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, in 2023, he published a memoir.
10:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Did I ever tell you this?
10:57
[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, of course, I do have it on hold at my library.
11:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good one.
11:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
11:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
11:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, written during treatment for blood cancer, uh, T cell lymphoma diagnosed in 2022.
11:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and he announced in 2026 at a clinical trial, um, of, uh, T cell therapy had left him cancer free, and I think it was really just days later.
11:20
[SPEAKER_01]: that he died.
11:23
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was, make days weeks, you know, that kind of thing was, it was very, you know, very sudden.
11:28
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, wow, I'm doing well.
11:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, no.
11:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
11:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
11:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
11:33
[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was really tough.
11:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of noted.
11:36
[SPEAKER_01]: me and Brian, our father died of blood cancer.
11:40
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I always take note, you know, when someone dies of a blood cancer cute leukemia.
11:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, exactly.
11:49
[SPEAKER_01]: So and and dad went rather quick to see dead.
11:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's right.
11:54
[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that makes Sam's career unusual is that he really transitioned seamlessly from like leading man in the late 70s and 80s to prestige character actor in the 90s and beyond, without really ever disappearing.
12:09
[SPEAKER_01]: He did, we have 74 credits between film and TV.
12:13
[SPEAKER_01]: What is, yes, more than I thought.
12:17
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
12:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Honestly.
12:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 74 credits over 50 years and he really never stopped working.
12:25
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
12:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he really just became a go-to actor for intelligent, morally complex authority figures who could be either deeply reassuring like Dr. Grant or quietly terrifying.
12:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's, it's really a remarkable consistency across 50 years.
12:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Really before Jurassic Park, he was cast as the romantically, as I noted, you know, the central dramatic protagonist, but after Jurassic Park, again, he really was like a scientist, mentor, patreon judge, senior official, you know, while occasionally playing villains.
13:10
[SPEAKER_01]: It really is just, yeah.
13:12
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a real folkrum of his career there, that particular role flipped him into a more of a warm fatherly figure.
13:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
13:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
13:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Action leading man.
13:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
13:23
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
13:23
[SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
13:24
[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that, you know, we can discuss one thing I, I like about an actor like Sam Neil is, you know, I'm sure Jurassic Park and the, the sequel movies that he did, you know, paid for his kids college.
13:40
[SPEAKER_01]: But he didn't rest on his laurels there, you know, I mean he yes he kept doing Jurassic Park movies, but you know that didn't stop him from still having a real wide variety of a career.
13:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious you guys like we've been talking about Jurassic Park, but what else Brian and Dave, what else stands out for you in terms of Sam Neal?
14:02
[SPEAKER_05]: I've have a deep respect for him.
14:04
[SPEAKER_05]: I always thought he was just great, great actor, great presence.
14:10
[SPEAKER_05]: I remember him being an untamed by wife and I saw that series, and that was 24 or 25.
14:18
[SPEAKER_05]: So just about a year before his death, and he played that mentor role to this National Park Service police law enforcement agent.
14:29
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
14:30
[SPEAKER_05]: And it's like, there he is.
14:32
[SPEAKER_05]: Yay.
14:32
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, it just brings a smile to my face or recognition.
14:35
[SPEAKER_05]: And I always anticipate it what he will do with a role.
14:39
[SPEAKER_05]: It's great.
14:40
[SPEAKER_05]: It's signature kind of voice, his accent, which is kind of a mix and match over his life.
14:47
[SPEAKER_05]: I first saw him in Omen 3 and shout out to Alicia for bringing that film up because I thought it was the
14:56
[SPEAKER_05]: But it was the Omen movie.
14:58
[SPEAKER_05]: That was 1981.
15:00
[SPEAKER_05]: That was a movie that our dad took us to.
15:04
[SPEAKER_05]: I was going to say it.
15:04
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because he looks there.
15:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
15:08
[SPEAKER_05]: So we went to the movie theater.
15:10
[SPEAKER_05]: We saw it.
15:10
[SPEAKER_05]: There was a Swav guy.
15:12
[SPEAKER_05]: First time.
15:13
[SPEAKER_05]: It's like, oh, wow.
15:14
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, pretty dapper and everything.
15:16
[SPEAKER_05]: So.
15:17
[SPEAKER_05]: but also the hunt for red october.
15:19
[SPEAKER_05]: You played the Russians second and command.
15:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Kind of that older school kind of steady hand.
15:29
[SPEAKER_05]: Is it steady hand?
15:30
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's like this is the Russian state.
15:32
[SPEAKER_05]: You're going to do as a ordered and Sean Connery is like breaking the rules and he's like, what?
15:37
[SPEAKER_05]: you know, and he was just, he was just great in that.
15:41
[SPEAKER_05]: And of course, it's Jurassic Park series.
15:44
[SPEAKER_05]: Certainly has always been a treat, because especially the first one, he just, and I think someone on Discord showed a great little snippet video of him touching the electric fence going, yeah, and he was like freaking out the kids.
15:59
[SPEAKER_05]: It's just fantastic.
16:01
[SPEAKER_05]: It was like, whoop, just a joke.
16:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually remember him before Jurassic Park, again, it was the Omen because our dad probably took us, and then it was dead calm.
16:16
[SPEAKER_01]: I was just getting into Nicole Kidman in her career and it was the one of her first films.
16:23
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was the two of them, you know, out on a boat,
16:32
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I can't remember the actor who played anyway, but they pick up a stranded, you know, person just out in the ocean and he's up not being a very good force, not not one for good.
16:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's really the, you know, the nice guy, you know, the good husband who's just put in a really crazy situation.
16:52
[SPEAKER_01]: So I definitely remember dead calm because of Nicole
16:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I also remember him for the piano in 1993, Jane Campion, directed, and I think that's where Holly Hunter won her Oscar for Best Actress, yeah, he played her husband, yeah, so yeah, so that's how I knew him leading into Jurassic Park and then of course everything else is
17:21
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, event horizon.
17:23
[SPEAKER_01]: The horse whisper for me.
17:25
[SPEAKER_01]: One of my favorite films actually, you know, I think we talked a little bit in our Robert Redford episode, but, you know, he was, I think the father of the husband there, I could be wrong, but, you know, I definitely remember him from that.
17:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was an out and all that was television.
17:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say I'm looking through the
17:47
[SPEAKER_02]: I am thinking that I have to go to hunt for Red October and his role as the Russian second in command as the first time that I could recognize him on screen.
18:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sort of scrolling through his letterboxed credit things right because they just play all the little movie thumbnails and I'm trying to see there's a lot of stuff.
18:13
[SPEAKER_02]: that I have not seen or had no idea that he would have been in.
18:17
[SPEAKER_02]: He's in the Chibi Chase movie memoirs of an invisible man like that's bizarre.
18:25
[SPEAKER_02]: The piano was a big movie I think at the time.
18:28
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
18:29
[SPEAKER_02]: I see that triggered when you said that.
18:32
[SPEAKER_02]: And Ivan Ho, that's an interesting credit, attack force Z, I could see him totally as a sort of a mercenary type.
18:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think it's, I think it's for me hunt for October, and he has that same calming quality that he carries in the Jurassic movies.
18:56
[SPEAKER_02]: of just sort of being very placid in the face of insane amounts of danger and it's very, very calm about everything and just a kind presence on screen.
19:10
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really where my furthest memories go back and seems like with you a stage actor as well.
19:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was in university as when he did stage but quickly got into TB in New Zealand.
19:29
[SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, and he didn't really do much Broadway lately.
19:33
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, he stayed in front of the camera and didn't do life theater.
19:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm, there's so many things I'm seeing on his list that I just have no idea that that wherever a movie or that he was in, he was really working, he was an actor's actor, I think.
19:50
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
19:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And that regard.
19:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Wimbledon, I remember, but I have to recall what he was in.
19:56
[SPEAKER_05]: I remember that movie.
19:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
19:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's probably a segment of people who might remember him from, you know, horror fans might really remember him for his roles there.
20:08
[SPEAKER_01]: He can do like in possession event horizon and the mouth of madness.
20:13
[SPEAKER_01]: He starts being really calm and rational, and then he just gradually gets really obsessive and frightened and completely unhinged.
20:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And so some horror fans call him a the intellectual scream king.
20:30
[SPEAKER_01]: performances.
20:31
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so he's good at men losing their minds for sure, but I think to I, it's really the villains that stand out again, Damian piggy blinders, you know, the two days.
20:44
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he was definitely.
20:45
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think I ever saw a vent horizon.
20:48
[SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting.
20:50
[SPEAKER_02]: Lawrence Fishbird and Sam Neal.
20:51
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, everyone's in that one.
20:53
[SPEAKER_02]: It's amazing.
20:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, one.
20:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Huh, okay.
20:56
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, more gaps in my filmography I can see here.
20:58
[SPEAKER_05]: That's the thing about these.
21:00
[SPEAKER_05]: You begin to realize what has been missed.
21:03
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
21:04
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
21:05
[SPEAKER_02]: So there was his passing left a bit of a wake in our community and I think you had collected some of the the conversations that were happening online about him from our community.
21:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Brian, why don't you kick that off?
21:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, absolutely.
21:19
[SPEAKER_05]: So it started discord, started conversation.
21:23
[SPEAKER_05]: So I wanted to bring the
21:30
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't see dead calm until a little later.
21:33
[SPEAKER_05]: So the first thing I remember seeing him was the hunt for Red October.
21:38
[SPEAKER_05]: And then he later says he was memorable in event horizon.
21:42
[SPEAKER_05]: So he did see that one.
21:44
[SPEAKER_05]: Dave, yeah, Davey Mac, for me it was Jurassic Park.
21:47
[SPEAKER_05]: I was 10 and he instantly became one of my favorite actors with that role alone.
21:55
[SPEAKER_05]: And I lit up every time I saw him,
21:58
[SPEAKER_05]: show up on screen ever since as well said.
22:02
[SPEAKER_05]: And then he also goes on to say many lovely stories being shared on blue sky about him as well.
22:07
[SPEAKER_05]: I love the the one about how he had the union check on the Australian flag on his character's uniform and event horizon replaced with the aboriginal flag because he thought that's what it should wood should look like in the future.
22:25
[SPEAKER_05]: And he said he's tempted to pick up his memoir as an I agree.
22:29
[SPEAKER_05]: I agree.
22:29
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm tempted to read it as well.
22:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Doug Orland said that he loved him in until the end of the world.
22:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So definitely, I need to add that to my list.
22:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Baron wrote that.
22:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I loved him so much in P.C.
22:45
[SPEAKER_01]: blinders.
22:47
[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
22:47
[SPEAKER_01]: There's one.
22:50
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm going to slaughter this handle, motorist, motorist, oh my goodness.
22:56
[SPEAKER_01]: My apologies.
22:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Going through his filmography, I can't say I particularly remember him in Hunt for Red October.
23:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's motor rider SD.
23:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
23:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Motor rider SD.
23:08
[SPEAKER_01]: But he said that Jurassic Park was definitely the first time I ever really knew who he was.
23:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Realizing that he was a memoirs of an
23:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and hunt for wilder people was so wonderful.
23:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to have to rewatch that one.
23:26
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, there's definitely some good comedic roles that I that he mentions there Brian what else did our community say.
23:34
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we have Furlisa, so many great films and TV that did calm the piano hunt for the Wilder people, Jurassic Park, the tutors, piggy blinders, to name a few, what a career, exclamation point, Eon, responding from Davey Mac about in the mouth of madness, it's great, absolutely underrated.
23:59
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I'm gonna have to check that out for sure.
24:02
[SPEAKER_05]: And Alicia, from my watch two years ago, gives the final conflict, Omen 3.5 stars.
24:11
[SPEAKER_02]: We have talked about for Spooktober doing an Omen one day that might get on the list.
24:18
[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah.
24:19
[SPEAKER_02]: There were quite a few Omen.
24:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and there was a remake recently, wasn't there?
24:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
24:24
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's what brought around the conversation a little bit.
24:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:29
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good idea.
24:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have 71 wrote that?
24:34
[SPEAKER_01]: First came across Sam Neal when he did a TV show called Riley, a subspise.
24:40
[SPEAKER_01]: He got a shot at Bond after this, and if you've seen it, he would have been a fantastic 007, definitely a... Oh, what is it?
24:59
[SPEAKER_03]: during his bond.
25:01
[SPEAKER_01]: One of those actors who just seems natural and any role he takes on be at the antichrist, a dodgy copper from bell-fast, a paleontologist, or Uncle Hector.
25:14
[SPEAKER_01]: He also seemed to be just a good guy and you can see it on the social, so many people both in business and the general public
25:26
[SPEAKER_05]: to go do, thanks.
25:28
[SPEAKER_05]: And finally, Rocky Zim, Sam Neal was always Dr. Grant to me whenever I would see him in other movie or show.
25:36
[SPEAKER_05]: I saw Jurassic Park when I was 10 and watched it many times.
25:40
[SPEAKER_05]: I was one of those kids obsessed with dinosaurs.
25:43
[SPEAKER_05]: I liked how in the movie he hated kids, but by the end, became a dad to them, laugh out loud.
25:50
[SPEAKER_05]: face.
25:51
[SPEAKER_05]: That's great.
25:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Had the same thought, it's just like, you know, just warming up to those kids was not expected, right?
25:58
[SPEAKER_05]: Because you saw the beginning with this kid with the questions, you kept asking the questions and annoyed Tim.
26:05
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
26:08
[SPEAKER_05]: This is care.
26:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, like a six foot turkey.
26:10
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm turkey.
26:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm turkey.
26:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no.
26:14
[SPEAKER_03]: OK.
26:15
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't imagine yourself.
26:16
[SPEAKER_03]: Taste this period.
26:17
[SPEAKER_03]: You get your first look at this six foot turkey, as you enter a cleric.
26:21
[SPEAKER_03]: He moves like a bird, lightly bobbing his head, and you keep still because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement, like Perex.
26:29
[SPEAKER_03]: He'll lose you if you don't move.
26:31
[SPEAKER_03]: But now, not the loss of raptor.
26:33
[SPEAKER_03]: You stare at him.
26:35
[SPEAKER_03]: And he just stares right back.
26:38
[SPEAKER_03]: That's when the attack comes, not from the front, but from the side.
26:43
[SPEAKER_03]: When the other two raptors, you just didn't even know we're there.
26:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And he can try to get into a Jeep that didn't include the kids and he finally got cornered in Jeep.
26:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, he definitely seemed to stay really good friends with a lot of, you know, the actors that he played with.
27:03
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was definitely a lot of love coming from Laura Dern and oh my gosh, how can I not know the guy who played chaos.
27:12
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, Jeffrey Goldblum.
27:13
[SPEAKER_05]: Thank you.
27:14
[SPEAKER_05]: You're welcome.
27:15
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so he's definitely in Nicole Kidman.
27:18
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I know I remember Steven Spielberg, when he, of course, he talks quite a bit over the many years about making Jurassic Park.
27:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And he really thought that it was our POV, the audience POV for that movie was Sam Neal.
27:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he really was the one, I mean, Lord earned a great job, but just the absolute awe and wonder and curiosity and amazement, he was really, Dr. Grant was our audience avatar.
27:51
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, you know, I think that's why it leaves an imprint.
27:56
[SPEAKER_02]: He was the good guy that we could hang out.
27:58
[SPEAKER_02]: We were the kids.
28:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
28:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
28:01
[SPEAKER_02]: And he was the column steady presence that we could sort of hang on to and hope that he would rescue us when the lost raptors come.
28:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Or the T-Rex comes knocking, I guess, in the first.
28:11
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
28:12
[SPEAKER_05]: That's right.
28:13
[SPEAKER_05]: Well said, well said.
28:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just recently watched.
28:16
[SPEAKER_01]: We watched, like I said, Jurassic Park.
28:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of good little nuggets in there.
28:20
[SPEAKER_04]: So Brian, anything else?
28:23
[SPEAKER_05]: No, I think so, but I think it's a good way of just tipping our hat and letting the ship go.
28:32
[SPEAKER_02]: So, what do your Samuel Watchlist recommendations coming out of this one you're going to go see Brian?
28:38
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I would see Peaky Blonders.
28:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
28:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's a series.
28:43
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's a series.
28:44
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
28:45
[SPEAKER_05]: I would include.
28:47
[SPEAKER_05]: I think I want to see maybe until the end of the world and the point about the madness and the mouth of madness in the mouth of madness, right?
28:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
28:58
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
28:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Lisa, do you got something?
28:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's on my list too in the mouth of madness.
29:02
[SPEAKER_01]: You can run it through your library via hoopla.
29:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Huplo possession is also on Huplo and then hunt for the wilder people when it was later films is on prime.
29:15
[SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
29:16
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to add a vent horizon to my watch list.
29:20
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't be a never seen that.
29:21
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like a bit of one of those sci-fi horror films.
29:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
29:25
[SPEAKER_02]: It's holding on with a reasonable 3.3 on letter box.
29:29
[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, not terrible.
29:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and I remember up this movie because I think it was early enough that there weren't a whole lot of sci-fi movies out there.
29:38
[SPEAKER_05]: So there were a lot of talk about about that movie when it came out.
29:42
[SPEAKER_05]: You got it.
29:43
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
29:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Sounds good.
29:44
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
29:45
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, thank you.
29:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And what's next on our official schedule?
29:50
[SPEAKER_02]: Catherine or Hera?
29:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
29:51
[SPEAKER_01]: We still have to get some comedy in with Catherine or Hera.
29:55
[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.
29:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
29:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Super Bowl.
29:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
29:57
[SPEAKER_02]: So once we get out of the summer season and the kids get back to school and we get on how normal rotation, we can get those scheduled and maybe get those out in September sometime.
30:10
[SPEAKER_05]: That's awesome.
30:11
[SPEAKER_05]: Excellent.
30:12
[SPEAKER_05]: Sounds great.
30:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks to all of our community volunteers to our discord server boosters and to our lore master subscribers and to all of our subscribers.
