- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let me take you back for a second,
- 0:02Speaker 1: because every bad dinner decision, well, it starts way earlier
- 0:07Speaker 1: than you think. It doesn't start at the store. It
- 0:09Speaker 1: doesn't start when you're hungry. It starts with confidence. Yeah,
- 0:13Speaker 1: we'll go with confidence. It's it starts with you kind
- 0:16Speaker 1: of earlier in the day, when you're just sitting there,
- 0:18Speaker 1: maybe at your desk, or you're sitting there on the truck,
- 0:20Speaker 1: or you're sitting there on the way to practice, and
- 0:22Speaker 1: you're just like, I'll just I'll just figure it out later,
- 0:25Speaker 1: that version of you, well, that guy's got it together,
- 0:29Speaker 1: that guy's responsible, that guy thinks he's gonna have time.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's fast forward, because now it's later, that guy, well
- 0:39Speaker 1: is gone, he left, he checked out. I was just
- 0:42Speaker 1: you standing in your kitchen looking around like, all right,
- 0:47Speaker 1: what are we doing here? And then you got a
- 0:49Speaker 1: couple of kids going, I'm hungry, not you eat. Well,
- 0:57Speaker 1: that's what I decided to be a little proactive. The
- 1:00Speaker 1: time of the recording. It's Sinko to Mayo, and I said,
- 1:03Speaker 1: you know what, let's heading over to Dollar General and
- 1:06Speaker 1: let's get the best Mexican food that they offer. Sorry,
- 1:09Speaker 1: it didn't mean to laugh. But then we're gonna cook
- 1:12Speaker 1: it up. Avery's gonna give it a little bit of
- 1:13Speaker 1: a review. Of course, you won't get on camera too busy,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and I'm gonna record in between softball practice, cooking dinner,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and then on the way to a basketball game while
- 1:22Speaker 1: the wife drives the other two kids while they both
- 1:25Speaker 1: had practice at the same exact time. But at the
- 1:27Speaker 1: end of the day, we're going to have ourselves a
- 1:30Speaker 1: dollar general Sinko to Mayo. Yeah, I feel like I'm
- 1:36Speaker 1: not the only one that's been in this situation, right,
- 1:38Speaker 1: And I do have to admit that I don't know
- 1:41Speaker 1: what it is about certain days, right, I mean, sometimes
- 1:45Speaker 1: you just get caught up, or at least it's me
- 1:46Speaker 1: when you decide to pack eighteen hours of stuff into
- 1:51Speaker 1: a twenty four hour day, but time just seems to disappear.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It's like you flip the little sand time thing and
- 1:57Speaker 1: that just is gone in the blink of an eye.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Because this time of the year, it's crazy, and sometimes
- 2:03Speaker 1: I think that I've got the whole evening and then
- 2:05Speaker 1: suddenly you realize it's Tuesday and it's gone, and you
- 2:09Speaker 1: forgot the one thing. Sometimes you work a little longer.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Sometimes practice goes over. Sometimes I get a little bit chatty,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and the kids will at dust that I'm packing up,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I'm driving home, and by the time you get there,
- 2:20Speaker 1: you feel like you just lost three hours. And I'm
- 2:24Speaker 1: still thinking dinner, well, dinner didn't get the minimal dinner
- 2:28Speaker 1: is still sitting there like, yeah, you gotta deal with me,
- 2:33Speaker 1: which I don't know why it was so creepy. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: before I jump into this, I do want to let
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know that I am doing at some point bring
- 2:42Speaker 1: in my buddy Luther Grimwood, who Uho's gonna help with
- 2:47Speaker 1: the Sinko to Mio stuff, because this episode we're going
- 2:50Speaker 1: to not only talk about what we had for dinner
- 2:53Speaker 1: how it tasted, We're gonna tell you about Sinko to Mio.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But sorry, I'm jumping all over the place because I'm
- 3:00Speaker 1: really excited to talk about this dollar general Mexican food.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But uh so, listen, Yeah, if you like me, you
- 3:05Speaker 1: got kids in sports, right, you already know this isn't
- 3:08Speaker 1: even optional because you don't run your schedule softball does
- 3:13Speaker 1: Softball says, yeah, you gotta be here at this time,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you gotta leave it. This time you're gonna be here.
- 3:17Speaker 1: You're gonna be there. You're gonna be there, and it
- 3:19Speaker 1: doesn't care about your wallet. And sometimes you're gonna be
- 3:21Speaker 1: a little longer than expected. And then there's the old
- 3:24Speaker 1: weather because on the fly, a game gets changed canceled,
- 3:27Speaker 1: the practice gets added, thing gets shifted and whoo. And
- 3:34Speaker 1: I have to imagine you're like me. You just sit
- 3:36Speaker 1: at the field and you think, like, holy cow, I've
- 3:38Speaker 1: been here for a long time. I feel like this
- 3:41Speaker 1: is my home now. Like if somebody asks me sometimes
- 3:44Speaker 1: like where do you live? And I'm just gonna be
- 3:46Speaker 1: like first base side, yeah, coaching softball. But the crazy
- 3:52Speaker 1: part is I don't question it for some reason, I
- 3:55Speaker 1: just kind of I accept it. I'm like, this is
- 3:58Speaker 1: just life. This, it's just life now. So again, let
- 4:04Speaker 1: me bring in Luther real quick, see what he's up to.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And uh, you guys, you guys have heard my voice
- 4:09Speaker 1: too long. If you don't know who I am, I'm Matt,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I'm Beard Laws and uh, let's introduce him real quick. Lother,
- 4:17Speaker 1: my dude, what's happening? Welcome to the STANDU of My
- 4:19Speaker 1: Fridge podcast. My dude, hopp you single to Mayo?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Ah, my friend, it's a glorious Sinco de Mayo. The
- 4:25Speaker 2: fridge is open, but not for leftovers. Note today it's
- 4:29Speaker 2: all about those legendary Dollar General Mexican delights. We're taking
- 4:33Speaker 2: our taste buds on a budget friendly fiesta, because who
- 4:36Speaker 2: says dads can't be culinary adventurers while also surviving softball season.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Let's fiesta and maybe just maybe avoid a post taco nap.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yes, let's let's definitely avoid the posts na nacho, the
- 4:49Speaker 1: post nacho taco potato potato same thing. So when's the
- 4:54Speaker 1: last time you've kind of been to a Dollar General? Like?
- 4:56Speaker 1: I know we recently, and by we, I mean me
- 4:59Speaker 1: and a family. We did the can stuff I remember,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'll put it here. Whence the last time you've kind
- 5:03Speaker 1: of stepped into the DG.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Ah The DG the land of surprises and questionable deals
- 5:11Speaker 2: pops in not too long ago, maybe a few weeks
- 5:13Speaker 2: back when I needed a last minute random tool and
- 5:16Speaker 2: left with snacks I didn't know I needed. It's the
- 5:19Speaker 2: kind of place where you go for tears paste and
- 5:21Speaker 2: leave with the garden and apparently a fiesta worth of food.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You just never know what's in store.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You really don't and I mean, let's be honest, you
- 5:28Speaker 1: get that little clearance event going on, you walk in
- 5:30Speaker 1: and they got that table of stuff that's way cheaper
- 5:32Speaker 1: than it should and you're like, I'm not gonna do
- 5:34Speaker 1: what I have willpower. And then you walk by and
- 5:36Speaker 1: the kid sees this, and you see that, and goodbye
- 5:39Speaker 1: will power. Not really sure who you are, will but anyways.
- 5:44Speaker 2: That's a dad Joe for a willpower is like that
- 5:47Speaker 2: gym membership in January sounds great theory but disappears when
- 5:51Speaker 2: you're standing next to a discount shelf for chimney changers.
- 5:54Speaker 2: But hey, we'll call it content research. You've got a
- 5:57Speaker 2: whole podcast to justify that cart.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You aren't kidding. And so where we are at this point,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I guess we've got this night. We have sinko DeMaio,
- 6:06Speaker 1: no plan, dollar, general decisions, meat, cooking food, while one
- 6:11Speaker 1: kid showers, the other two kids and the wife are
- 6:14Speaker 1: on their you know, commute home after they're double prackys,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and hopefully they come home happy, hungry, well not hungry,
- 6:21Speaker 1: because I'll be and be honest, I live in a
- 6:23Speaker 1: house full of girls, and when they turn angry, it
- 6:25Speaker 1: is no bueno. See what I did there. But I'm
- 6:28Speaker 1: sitting here thinking I should probably, I should probably know
- 6:32Speaker 1: what this actually is because I've celebrated Sinko Tomyo, I've
- 6:35Speaker 1: eaten the food, I've done the whole thing, but I
- 6:37Speaker 1: never really stopped and went, what are we actually celebrating?
- 6:41Speaker 1: So not only are we going to get to the
- 6:43Speaker 1: Dollar General Hall, which I will insert some videos if
- 6:46Speaker 1: you haven't seen them already, me going to the DG,
- 6:49Speaker 1: what foods I got and all that good stuff, But
- 6:51Speaker 1: I thought it would be a good idea to actually
- 6:53Speaker 1: tell you what Sinko Tomayo really is. And I'll figure Luther,
- 6:57Speaker 1: you'd be my guy, Like, do you think this is
- 6:58Speaker 1: a good idea? I mean, educating the people. It's got
- 7:02Speaker 1: to be pretty cool, right. We're not just about stuff
- 7:04Speaker 1: in fridges, right, Oh?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean we can't just be out here stuff in
- 7:10Speaker 2: ourselves with Jimmy changers without some knowledge, right, educating the
- 7:14Speaker 2: people while we munch on Dollar General fines.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That's a power combo. And I am here to drop
- 7:19Speaker 3: some real deal history, no fridge required.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Let's make sure when they walk through that door and
- 7:24Speaker 2: they get a side of wit and wisdom right before
- 7:26Speaker 2: you pass them.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Mini tacos.
- 7:28Speaker 1: All right, well, let's go ahead and break down a
- 7:30Speaker 1: sinkle to mylelute. There, let's travel back to Mexico early
- 7:34Speaker 1: eighteen sixties. There's some internal conflict, right, shall we go
- 7:40Speaker 1: with that?
- 7:43Speaker 3: Oh? Absolutely, picture it. Eighteen sixty two. The French are
- 7:47Speaker 3: coming in hot, thinking they'll take over Mexico City.
- 7:50Speaker 2: But at Puebla, Mexican forces gave them a big old
- 7:53Speaker 2: Not today, Napoleon the third. It's the celebration of an
- 7:56Speaker 2: underdog victory. And who doesn't love a good underdog story?
- 7:59Speaker 1: All right, we's we're building this up, Luther, no spoilers,
- 8:03Speaker 1: all right, So again, early eighteen sixties, they're coming out
- 8:07Speaker 1: of an internal conflict, debt, it's piling up the economy,
- 8:12Speaker 1: it's struggling, not exactly in a position to deal with.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Let's go with outside pressure. And then, like Luther said,
- 8:20Speaker 1: here comes Europe. Britain, Spain, and France. They all had interest.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But France they're the one that pushed it, didn't they.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Oh they sure did.
- 8:31Speaker 2: France thought, hey, let's install a puppet emperor while we're here.
- 8:35Speaker 2: But on May fifth, eighteen sixty two, at the Battle
- 8:37Speaker 2: of Puebla, Mexican forces, said.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Au Revoir to the invaders. So Sinko demayo isn't Mexican,
- 8:43Speaker 3: right right, all.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Right, you're jumping right to the end. We got to
- 8:46Speaker 1: build it up, Luther, patience, young grasshopper.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Ah, you're right.
- 8:53Speaker 2: No good story hits the climax too early. We've got
- 8:56Speaker 2: to season it like a perfect tacker. So let's simmer
- 8:59Speaker 2: in the building. France, led by Napoleon the third was
- 9:02Speaker 2: like that one guest who overstays, But the underdog vibes
- 9:05Speaker 2: were just getting started.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We'll get to the finale just after the next bite.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Oh there we go. Take a bite, everybody, because let's
- 9:13Speaker 1: be honest, at this point you're probably eating some Senco
- 9:16Speaker 1: de Mayo leftovers. Napoleon, not the first, the second, but
- 9:20Speaker 1: the third. He wasn't just trying to collect some money.
- 9:23Speaker 1: He's trying to build influence in the Americas, which, by
- 9:26Speaker 1: the way, is a pretty big deal because the US
- 9:29Speaker 1: is dealing with a little something called civil war at
- 9:32Speaker 1: the same time.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Exactly, the US was a bit busy with their own
- 9:39Speaker 2: North versus South drama, so France thought, why not make
- 9:42Speaker 2: a move.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But that's what.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Makes the Battle of Puebla so satisfying against the odds.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Mexican defenders said, not today in Napoleon, so every leftover
- 9:51Speaker 2: bye is basically a victory snack.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Hmm, Yeah, I mean everything in the region seems to
- 9:59Speaker 1: be well, pretty unstable, and then France and then Napoleon.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Not the first or second, the third sees that and goes, yeah,
- 10:08Speaker 1: now's the time. So you kind of have the French
- 10:12Speaker 1: troops moving toward Mexico City. Have you ever been to
- 10:15Speaker 1: Mexico City.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I haven't physically been to Mexico City.
- 10:20Speaker 2: No legs are me, just words, but hey, it's a
- 10:23Speaker 2: vibrant place, rich in history, and back then it was
- 10:26Speaker 2: that shining prize.
- 10:27Speaker 3: But before the French could roll out.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Their empire plans, puedlasted strong. I'd say that's a better
- 10:33Speaker 2: blot tist than any soap opera.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I haven't been in Mexico either. I've been to Canada
- 10:37Speaker 1: a bunch because I'm on the Canadian border. Never never
- 10:39Speaker 1: went south. It's quite always turns out Canada to Mexico
- 10:43Speaker 1: pretty far from there. But so you got the French.
- 10:46Speaker 1: They're moving towards Mexico City, and as Lutherus said, like
- 10:49Speaker 1: twenty seven times, they find this little place called.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Puebla, and Puebla was where the party stopped. Frans with
- 11:00Speaker 2: General Zaragoza leading the Mexican forces. They pulled off and
- 11:04Speaker 2: excuse me, you're not invited, my man. It didn't end
- 11:08Speaker 2: the whole intervention.
- 11:10Speaker 1: We're not gonna give away. We're not gonna give away again,
- 11:12Speaker 1: all right, let me sorry, everybody. He gets so excited
- 11:16Speaker 1: about history, he just can't contain himself. Yes, led by
- 11:20Speaker 1: the generally talked about and he decided, Luther, this is
- 11:23Speaker 1: how you built the story. Take notes. He decides to
- 11:27Speaker 1: stand and fight. And again it's not supposed to go
- 11:30Speaker 1: so well. It's this whole underdog thing that Luther keeps dropping.
- 11:35Speaker 1: But this it's like showing up to a game where
- 11:38Speaker 1: the other team already has everything. They have the size,
- 11:41Speaker 1: the strength, the experience. So if you show up to
- 11:43Speaker 1: a softball field with not even some gloves a bat,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and you're just a first year team kind of like uh,
- 11:49Speaker 1: the bad news bearers. You just show up, your coach
- 11:51Speaker 1: is having a couple schmokes and some bottles of beer,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and then you're just kind of there, like we're gonna
- 11:59Speaker 1: give this a shot. And somehow just like the bad
- 12:02Speaker 1: news bears. What do they do, Luther?
- 12:07Speaker 2: They pull off the wind, No one't expected against the odds.
- 12:11Speaker 2: With grit and probably a few metaphorical bad news bare moments.
- 12:15Speaker 3: The Mexican foces send a French packing, at least for
- 12:18Speaker 3: that day.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And that's why we celebrate underdogs with tacos, make the
- 12:22Speaker 2: best stories.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah, they held them off, they pushed them back. For
- 12:26Speaker 1: that moment, everything flips. And in those moments I feel
- 12:30Speaker 1: like they matter more than an outcome sometimes because it's
- 12:35Speaker 1: not just about winning, it's about proving something. Because think
- 12:39Speaker 1: about it, we all have versions of that right moments
- 12:43Speaker 1: where you're just tired. I'm not gonna lie you right now,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I'm exhausted, don't feel great, slight headache. Think I pulled
- 12:48Speaker 1: the hamstring too old is what my body's saying, but
- 12:52Speaker 1: my brain says I'm good. And then there's you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: moments where maybe as a coach, maybe as a team,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you just walk out and you're technically outmatched. Our teams
- 13:02Speaker 1: were always prepared, but sometimes you're just not matched, but
- 13:05Speaker 1: you still show up and that's what sticks because that's
- 13:08Speaker 1: what people remember. That's what these these athletes remember, all right,
- 13:12Speaker 1: we're gonna never give up. We are gonna show up
- 13:15Speaker 1: and we're gonna give them everything that we have. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: let's be honest, people, they remember those underdog stories. They
- 13:21Speaker 1: don't remember the easy wins. How many how many sports
- 13:24Speaker 1: games do you clearly remember that was just a blowout.
- 13:28Speaker 1: But I bet you you can name five underdog victories.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, the upsets, the comeback stories.
- 13:36Speaker 2: That's where the goosebumps are. And that's exactly what Pueblo was.
- 13:40Speaker 2: You're right, those moments define us. So whether it's a game,
- 13:43Speaker 2: a podcast, or a plate of dollar general on that shows,
- 13:46Speaker 2: you show up and who knows, you just might make
- 13:49Speaker 2: history or at least a memorable meal.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Fair enough, So let's fast forward a little bit here
- 13:54Speaker 1: and uh, we're here sink He to mile us A,
- 13:58Speaker 1: which is, let's be honest, it's a completely different thing.
- 14:01Speaker 1: This is uh, this is food, that's a celebration. This
- 14:04Speaker 1: is restaurants going yehah, we're just gonna go all in
- 14:08Speaker 1: on this. And again, especially if it falls on a
- 14:10Speaker 1: tackle Tuesday like it did this year, I feel like
- 14:12Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with that, but it is. It's a
- 14:14Speaker 1: little bit funny, I guess. So something started as a
- 14:17Speaker 1: military victory turned into me standing in my kitchen with
- 14:22Speaker 1: a pile of dollar General Mexican foods. So history probably
- 14:27Speaker 1: didn't see that one come and did it.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I doubt General Zaragoza predicted Golla, General chimmy changers in
- 14:35Speaker 2: the future.
- 14:35Speaker 3: But hey, here we are. History evolve and so do
- 14:38Speaker 3: our celebrations.
- 14:40Speaker 2: As long as we remember the spirit of that underdog victory.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I maybe have a good laugh while chowing down. I'd
- 14:45Speaker 2: say we're doing it justice.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I do.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And when I was just grabbing the stuff, right, And
- 14:51Speaker 1: we'll get to the video here in a second. If
- 14:53Speaker 1: you're watching the video, if you're listening only, well, i'll
- 14:55Speaker 1: describe it all right. There was there wasn't really any
- 14:58Speaker 1: strategy in my brain. I said, all right, let's see
- 15:01Speaker 1: how much I can buy for like twenty bucks, right,
- 15:04Speaker 1: And I had Avery with me, and I was just like,
- 15:06Speaker 1: what do we think? And you know, I it was
- 15:09Speaker 1: kind of like, you know, this could work, This could
- 15:11Speaker 1: be decent. Now, this feels like dinner. This is interesting,
- 15:15Speaker 1: this might be good. That looks terrible. And I ended
- 15:19Speaker 1: up with the stuffed nachos, which actually kind of looked
- 15:23Speaker 1: like the three D doritos if you remember those at all.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I ended up with, I believe, some kind of burrito,
- 15:29Speaker 1: a couple of chimney changas mini tacos. To be exact.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I ended up with the stuffed nachos that were beef
- 15:36Speaker 1: and cheese, shredded steak and cheese burrito, a chicken, cheese
- 15:39Speaker 1: and rice Chimmy changa Jimmy Changa's just fun to say,
- 15:43Speaker 1: A shredded steak and cheese Jimmy changa mini tacos. And
- 15:46Speaker 1: then there was a chicken bacon ranch taketo. So I
- 15:51Speaker 1: guess if you were in the in the buzz, it'd
- 15:53Speaker 1: be what a dollar General Mexican sample platter with no rules?
- 16:00Speaker 3: A dollar General Mexican sampler with no rules. Now that
- 16:03Speaker 3: is a culinary adventure. Honestly, that's the spirit of this
- 16:06Speaker 3: whole thing.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Just like Quebla, We're going in without a perfect plan,
- 16:10Speaker 2: but hey, we're shoving up with nachos, burritos and sheer determination.
- 16:14Speaker 3: So let's dive into the taste test saga.
- 16:16Speaker 1: All right, let's start. Let's start with the stuff nachos.
- 16:19Speaker 1: All right, So the stuff nachos, Like I said, I'll
- 16:22Speaker 1: try to show the video right here in post at
- 16:25Speaker 1: a butt for anybody that's not watching the video, as
- 16:27Speaker 1: you can see, it is a it's like a triangle.
- 16:30Speaker 1: They're puffy, and I mean it's just a stuffed natcho.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So my brain instantly went, all right, I'm gonna picture
- 16:36Speaker 1: nachos in cheese, like I'm just dipping a tortilla chip
- 16:40Speaker 1: into some kind of like orange nacho cheese. But they're baked,
- 16:46Speaker 1: so it should have a little crisp. It's probably is
- 16:49Speaker 1: beard friendly, and you know, the every was a little
- 16:52Speaker 1: excited about this. Took a bite and be honest, had
- 16:55Speaker 1: good crunch, but it kind of tasted like just like
- 16:59Speaker 1: some bread with a little bit of nacho cheese. So
- 17:03Speaker 1: if you're like a you know, go ahead with a
- 17:05Speaker 1: chip and get a big old blob of cheese, this
- 17:07Speaker 1: might not be for you. Did a bunch of it
- 17:09Speaker 1: leak out, honestly, no, I was. I cooked them all
- 17:12Speaker 1: in the air fryar to be honest. I did the
- 17:14Speaker 1: whole sample platter four hundred took about ten minutes. I
- 17:17Speaker 1: think I had two trays. I didn't cook everything, but
- 17:20Speaker 1: it was a decent one and it was what did
- 17:24Speaker 1: the cool kids say? It was kind of mid. Avery's
- 17:26Speaker 1: rating was a five point three. Here's what she said.
- 17:29Speaker 1: She said, they're not bad, but it kind of tastes
- 17:33Speaker 1: like breading with a little nacho cheese inside it, which
- 17:35Speaker 1: is well a nacho, right, And I do agree with her.
- 17:40Speaker 1: It wasn't bad. It wasn't the best thing I've ever ate,
- 17:43Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go. The first number that the popped
- 17:45Speaker 1: in my head was a five point one.
- 17:50Speaker 3: A solid five point one. You gave it a fair shake.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I mean, if it crunches in vaguely tysted like cheese,
- 17:56Speaker 2: it's got a place at the table. Even if it's
- 17:59Speaker 2: not winning any cover May awards, onto the next die.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I mean, are no rules.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Plaza almost time for that. But the stuff nachos, they're honest,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and I respect honest food. The price, I believe was
- 18:10Speaker 1: like four to twenty five right around there. They were
- 18:13Speaker 1: just under five bucks for twenty of them. It looks
- 18:16Speaker 1: like a really small bag. But this is not a
- 18:19Speaker 1: bad buy, especially for under five bucks. I want to
- 18:22Speaker 1: say it was four twenty five. I'll have to double
- 18:24Speaker 1: check the receipt. And I mean they're not pretending to
- 18:26Speaker 1: be anything else. They're like, hey, this is what you bought.
- 18:29Speaker 1: This is what you're getting. In a weird way. It
- 18:31Speaker 1: just kind of worked, because sometimes expectations can ruin everything.
- 18:34Speaker 1: In these they don't have any And to be honest,
- 18:37Speaker 1: I took a little bit of some nacho cheese, gave
- 18:39Speaker 1: you a little dunker ru not dunk a ruse, and
- 18:41Speaker 1: be honest with you, wasn't half bad. Still five point
- 18:44Speaker 1: one for me, five point three for Avery. We'll lock
- 18:47Speaker 1: it in in a five point two between us.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Luther.
- 18:50Speaker 1: You didn't get a chance to try these, right, You
- 18:51Speaker 1: didn't get the memo till late.
- 18:52Speaker 3: That's on me.
- 18:56Speaker 2: No nat shows on my end. But I'm here living
- 18:58Speaker 2: vicariously through your crunch. Honestly, it sounds like the natchez
- 19:02Speaker 2: where as honest as a godless door receipt. So with
- 19:05Speaker 2: those expectations managed, let's see what other treasures or surprises
- 19:09Speaker 2: the next.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Yeah, let's go with the Let's go with the burrito.
- 19:12Speaker 1: How about the burrito. It seems like a good thing again.
- 19:14Speaker 1: This is going to be a shredded steak in cheese burrito.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I love a good shredded steak. From me, when I
- 19:21Speaker 1: see shredded steak kind of give and like in my brain,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm thinking like, uh, like like a Philly cheese steak.
- 19:28Speaker 1: But my before I even took a bite, I was
- 19:30Speaker 1: expecting it to be kind of like a hot pocket.
- 19:34Speaker 1: And I can't do it like that. You gotta go
- 19:35Speaker 1: hot pocket, right, Look at the commercial.
- 19:42Speaker 3: You absolutely nailed that mental image.
- 19:44Speaker 2: If it's anything like a hot cocket, hopefully it doesn't
- 19:47Speaker 2: come with molten lover or insights.
- 19:49Speaker 3: So was this Dollar General burrito a cheesy dream? More
- 19:53Speaker 3: more of a lukewarm surprise?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Oh? So, I have to be honest with you. Because
- 19:57Speaker 1: of my years of burning myself on hop, I knew
- 20:01Speaker 1: to cut it, invent it a little bit. Obviously, it
- 20:04Speaker 1: was a burrito, so it was wrapped. Wasn't exactly hot pocket,
- 20:07Speaker 1: but that's where my brain went. And to be honest
- 20:09Speaker 1: with you, it wasn't great. I had a good crunch.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean, it's a frozen They were three for five,
- 20:15Speaker 1: so the burrito and the two chimney changas, you got
- 20:18Speaker 1: three of them for five bucks. So I thought it
- 20:19Speaker 1: was a pretty decent buy. And let's be honest, for
- 20:22Speaker 1: the price point, it's not bad. It's gonna fill you up.
- 20:24Speaker 1: But I mean, if you were to go to like
- 20:26Speaker 1: a fast food place like a TV or any of
- 20:28Speaker 1: those other Mexican places. Not only is it gonna be busy,
- 20:30Speaker 1: but if you're gonna get a burrito or something like that,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I mean they're also a little bit mid, a lot
- 20:34Speaker 1: of calories, pretty filling, and I mean, for me, this
- 20:38Speaker 1: was the most middle of the road kind of thing,
- 20:40Speaker 1: potentially like the nachos that I expected. I was hoping
- 20:45Speaker 1: that I had a little bit more flavor at the
- 20:46Speaker 1: topping ratio. Not terrible, A lot of the burrito because
- 20:50Speaker 1: it's wrapped, but it was crunchy. It wasn't bad. Of course,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I took a couple of bites without it. It was
- 20:55Speaker 1: a little bit better with some salsa, some hot sauce,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and a little bit of some nacho cheese. And I mean,
- 21:01Speaker 1: it's it was kind of like it was kind of
- 21:03Speaker 1: like a movie you watch and when it ends, you go, yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I guess I saw that one coming. No strong feelings,
- 21:10Speaker 1: no momentages, just kind of happened. So again, nothing great,
- 21:14Speaker 1: nothing terrible, just kind of mid. I'm gonna I liked
- 21:17Speaker 1: it slightly more than the stuff nachos because of the
- 21:22Speaker 1: price point.
- 21:22Speaker 3: It's a little bit.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Cheaper more food, cheap, I'm cheap, I'm a sucker for it.
- 21:26Speaker 1: So for me, I'm gonna say it was like a
- 21:28Speaker 1: five point seven. Avery wasn't a fan of it. She said,
- 21:32Speaker 1: that's a hard pass for me, So you just get
- 21:34Speaker 1: my rating five point seven out of ten.
- 21:40Speaker 2: A five point seven sounds like that burrito, and it's key.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Not exactly a blockbuster, but a reliable matter today. And hey,
- 21:47Speaker 2: sometimes being just a crunchy bargain hero is all you need,
- 21:51Speaker 2: especially on a busy, angry day. What's next on the play.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Let's do Let's do the chimmy changers. Let's do it
- 21:57Speaker 1: too for let's do them both in there, because the
- 21:59Speaker 1: chimmy chan I mean, there were different. Luther will You
- 22:03Speaker 1: explained the difference between a chimmy changa and a burrito
- 22:05Speaker 1: for our less cultured Mexican dining listeners.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Absolutely imagine a burrito goes on an adventure and decides
- 22:18Speaker 2: it wants to be extra crispy.
- 22:19Speaker 3: That's a chimmy changa. It's deep fried.
- 22:22Speaker 2: So basically it's the crunchy, more rebellious cousin of a burrito.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Now I'm curious, did these dollar general chimmy changas deliver
- 22:29Speaker 2: that crispy rebellion or just a softer revelation.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Like you mentioned about underdogs. You kept saying it can say.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna say this is the underdogs of the night.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And I feel like it kind of makes sense because
- 22:41Speaker 1: I came into it. I expected nothing right and you
- 22:45Speaker 1: ever kind of noticed how you the less you expect something,
- 22:48Speaker 1: the better that it kind of hits, the better that
- 22:49Speaker 1: it is. And this was it. Now we had the
- 22:52Speaker 1: shredded steak and cheese chimmy changa. We had the chicken
- 22:56Speaker 1: cheese in rice chimmy changa. Again, both were crunchy. I
- 23:00Speaker 1: air fried them, used them right around there, maybe an
- 23:03Speaker 1: extra minute or two from what it called to be honest,
- 23:06Speaker 1: I ripped the package and I couldn't really read what
- 23:08Speaker 1: it was, so I throw it them with the rest
- 23:09Speaker 1: of the stuff. Pretty impressed at that much sample platter.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Stuff actually was able to cook so crispy and decent
- 23:15Speaker 1: and in air fryer. They know what they're doing when
- 23:17Speaker 1: they make it. Now, if I go into a Mexican
- 23:20Speaker 1: restaurant and ordered chimmy chang as a bunch, no, I
- 23:22Speaker 1: believe there's one, maybe two places that I've ever ordered
- 23:26Speaker 1: a chimmy changa that I like it, Yes, but it
- 23:28Speaker 1: was hard for me to get a base reading of
- 23:30Speaker 1: the chimy chong itself because they're usually lathered in some
- 23:34Speaker 1: kind of sauce, right, so this obviously no sauce. You
- 23:38Speaker 1: have it all the chicken, cheese and rice chimmy changa.
- 23:42Speaker 1: It was decent. The wife would definitely not eat the chicken.
- 23:45Speaker 1: It's kind of that cheaper chicken. Obviously, they're three for five.
- 23:48Speaker 1: It's not gonna be like high end chicken. So the text,
- 23:52Speaker 1: if you have a texture thing it's gonna be, it's
- 23:53Speaker 1: gonna be pretty difficult for you. Thankfully I do not.
- 23:56Speaker 1: But it's just cheaper, you know, cheaper chicken. The it
- 24:00Speaker 1: was country, a little bit of some flavor. Didn't overly
- 24:04Speaker 1: love it, but didn't hate it. It was a little
- 24:06Speaker 1: bit better with some hot sauce and salsa, for sure.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So for me, the chicken, cheese and rice chimmy changa
- 24:13Speaker 1: from Dollar General that was probably again I'm gonna go
- 24:17Speaker 1: with a I'm gonna go with a five point six,
- 24:20Speaker 1: a little bit lower than the burrito. From my personal taste,
- 24:23Speaker 1: I thought the steak was a touch better than the chicken.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But again, the shredded steak and cheese chimmy changa for me,
- 24:30Speaker 1: that's that was like a six point three territory. It was.
- 24:34Speaker 1: It was good. It was better then the burrito is
- 24:36Speaker 1: better than the chicken and rice chimmy changa. Again, was
- 24:39Speaker 1: this my underdog hit of the day? Could absolutely be.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I liked it.
- 24:43Speaker 3: It was good, all right. So the steak chimmy changa
- 24:50Speaker 3: took the crown.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Six point three note bad for an underdog from the
- 24:53Speaker 2: Frazer A, I love that you went in expecting nothing
- 24:57Speaker 2: and got a pleasant surprise.
- 24:58Speaker 3: That's the best kind of chimmy jango victory. Now what's next.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Let's are we heading into mini taco territory?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Man a daco territory mtt baby, because these are right there.
- 25:08Speaker 1: They had a shot. They needed a little bit of.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Help, all right.
- 25:10Speaker 1: So let's go with Avery's review first. She said it
- 25:15Speaker 1: has to be dipped in sour cream, tastes like cheap beef,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and it had that nice crunchy show that we talked about,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but again, obviously it's cheap beef, and it tasted like
- 25:26Speaker 1: it didn't know she was a beef expert, and it
- 25:28Speaker 1: did have some good flavor. She tried it with without
- 25:31Speaker 1: Obviously it didn't need some sauce. It says there was
- 25:34Speaker 1: some salsa in there, and like real salsa and stuff
- 25:36Speaker 1: like that in there. I don't know about it. Were
- 25:39Speaker 1: they good?
- 25:39Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:40Speaker 1: Again, price point was I want to say it was
- 25:42Speaker 1: like four to twenty five as well. Got a decent
- 25:45Speaker 1: amount of them. I mean, we've had these before. It's
- 25:48Speaker 1: a pretty quick meal. They're fairly good. The youngest il
- 25:52Speaker 1: loves them. Avery likes them. That was the first thing
- 25:54Speaker 1: that she requested when we went there on this adventure.
- 25:57Speaker 1: It's gonna have a little bit of a soft spot
- 25:58Speaker 1: for her. She rated it seven point one out of ten.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it was right about I'm gonna go
- 26:05Speaker 1: with a six point six. Very bland, but again, little salsa,
- 26:09Speaker 1: little at sauce. It kind of tastes like a little
- 26:11Speaker 1: taco their mini You you you wouldn't know that, you know,
- 26:16Speaker 1: if you were to do it blindly, you you could
- 26:19Speaker 1: maybe sneak it in from like a cheap you know,
- 26:22Speaker 1: say a TV or a cheap fast food place that
- 26:25Speaker 1: you order, drive twenty minutes home and you just kind
- 26:27Speaker 1: of reheat it and go. It's got the same kind
- 26:29Speaker 1: of vibe. So honestly, again needed sauce, needed support, They
- 26:33Speaker 1: needed a teammate on their own. They just didn't get
- 26:35Speaker 1: it done. But for me, I'm gonna go, uh so,
- 26:39Speaker 1: what's that in the middle? Six point eightish? Roughly no
- 26:41Speaker 1: notice why I didn't say six to seven.
- 26:48Speaker 3: A six point eight.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It is bland but dependable, like the reliable bench player
- 26:53Speaker 2: who steps in when you add sour cream.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Not a solo star, but hey, team, what makes the
- 26:58Speaker 3: taco way? I like that? Uh.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Then we had the chicken ranch taketos. Averyon went with
- 27:04Speaker 1: a six point four out of ten. She said it
- 27:06Speaker 1: tasted like a dollar General chicken bacon ranch pizza, which
- 27:10Speaker 1: little confusing, but at the same point, it's all the
- 27:13Speaker 1: same stuff, so it kind of does make sense. Supercuntry,
- 27:16Speaker 1: pretty filling. She went six point four. That's like a
- 27:19Speaker 1: I don't know, four point six. For me, I love it,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but I also don't love chicken ranch throwing in a taketo.
- 27:27Speaker 1: It's confusing. Didn't overly seem sinko to mio to me,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but she loves chicken bacon ranch stuff. We had to
- 27:34Speaker 1: get it, and uh yeah, I think that's that's our
- 27:38Speaker 1: that's our reviews. I don't know if anybody else has
- 27:39Speaker 1: tried them before. And let's go with this. This is
- 27:42Speaker 1: kind of the real part. This is how dinner works
- 27:44Speaker 1: sometimes because it wasn't played, it wasn't perfect. It was
- 27:48Speaker 1: just like, hey, just make whatever we can. Let's make
- 27:52Speaker 1: it happen. I debated trying to elevate them, but at
- 27:54Speaker 1: the same point, how are you gonna elevate these? I mean, yeah,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you could throw them in there, add some more sauces,
- 27:58Speaker 1: but I feel like, how are you gonna really get
- 28:00Speaker 1: the taste? How are you gonna get the pure ranking
- 28:02Speaker 1: and score just as DG without trying to elevate. Maybe
- 28:06Speaker 1: we try to elevate some stuff from DG at some point,
- 28:08Speaker 1: but again, this is just where we were at.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't want to see. That's the beauty of it.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Real life doesn't always come with a recipe. You took
- 28:19Speaker 2: what you had, you tend it into dinner, and hey,
- 28:23Speaker 2: sometimes that's exactly what you need. We've got some midscos,
- 28:26Speaker 2: some underdogs, but in the end, everyone's fed and we've
- 28:29Speaker 2: got a story, and that's a win.
- 28:30Speaker 3: In the Busy Parent playbook.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You aren't kidding, because let's be honest, there's nights where
- 28:35Speaker 1: you don't even have time to make food. You just
- 28:37Speaker 1: stand in the kitchen, you eat, You grab the first
- 28:39Speaker 1: thing you want, ramen, you want spaghettios. You're not even
- 28:41Speaker 1: gonna eat up the spaghetti's right out of the cam.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Oh cool, you got some spam, you want some Vienna sausages.
- 28:47Speaker 1: We're just going in like an exhausted raccoon some days,
- 28:50Speaker 1: no plate, no dignity, just just open something, just go
- 28:54Speaker 1: for it, right and take a bite, move on. In
- 28:57Speaker 1: the worst part, you don't even question it. You're just like,
- 29:00Speaker 1: let's get this done, let's get some showers, and let's
- 29:03Speaker 1: let's find a way to sleep, you know. And then
- 29:07Speaker 1: adding the kids to the mix, things always get a
- 29:09Speaker 1: little more interesting because now it's not just what am
- 29:11Speaker 1: I eating, it's what are they eating? And those are
- 29:14Speaker 1: two completely questions, especially with picky eaters. We have some
- 29:17Speaker 1: I don't like marin nerosogs. I want a little fraid o. No,
- 29:20Speaker 1: I want you know par you know what it is,
- 29:23Speaker 1: what it is. We can make a full meal, one
- 29:25Speaker 1: would eat three bites. One would do this in a
- 29:27Speaker 1: matter at the end of the day, they want dessert,
- 29:28Speaker 1: they want a snack. It's not a battle that I'm fighting.
- 29:31Speaker 1: It's a battle that we as parents are fighting. And
- 29:33Speaker 1: if I'm alone in this battle, that's absolutely crazy. But
- 29:37Speaker 1: then he start to talk like the money side of things,
- 29:40Speaker 1: because everything is pretty expensive now. It took almost one
- 29:43Speaker 1: hundred dollars to fill my truck the other day and
- 29:44Speaker 1: I got a little little truck, right, I mean groceries
- 29:47Speaker 1: take out all of it.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I try to do the math, like, is it smarter
- 29:50Speaker 1: for you know, the family of five just to grab
- 29:52Speaker 1: something out or go to the grocery store. It's like
- 29:55Speaker 1: it's almost I don't know, it's tough. It's very tough.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And then that's why we just kind of to look
- 30:00Speaker 1: in the middle ground. Something quick, something cheap, something that works.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And that's how you end up standing in a Dollar
- 30:05Speaker 1: General on a Sinkle to Mio, which also lands on
- 30:08Speaker 1: a taco Tuesday, building a meal out of what they
- 30:13Speaker 1: have in the frozen food sections. And that's why this
- 30:16Speaker 1: whole night actually makes sense because Sinkle to Mio, it's
- 30:19Speaker 1: not about showing up when things aren't ideal. And this
- 30:22Speaker 1: this wasn't the it wasn't that there was no plan,
- 30:26Speaker 1: no structure, just hey, let's go figure it out. And honestly,
- 30:30Speaker 1: it worked. It wasn't perfect, not something i'd recommend planning,
- 30:33Speaker 1: but it worked and sometimes I feel like me, it's
- 30:36Speaker 1: a little victory because it's enough. And if you've had
- 30:39Speaker 1: one of those nights where dinner just turns into whatever
- 30:42Speaker 1: you can make happen, I'd love to know what's your
- 30:44Speaker 1: go to because I need some more recipes because I
- 30:46Speaker 1: know I'm not the only one doing this.
- 30:52Speaker 3: You're definitely not alone.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Honestly, sometimes the no plan nights become the best stories,
- 30:57Speaker 2: just like this one.
- 30:58Speaker 3: And hey, that's a rack, just by that Jimmie Chianga.
- 31:02Speaker 1: That's a rap. So thank you for hanging out with
- 31:06Speaker 1: me and Luther Luther, thank you. If we need you again,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you can check them out on the Triple T podcast
- 31:11Speaker 1: that comes out every Tuesday and the Beard Laws Network.
- 31:14Speaker 1: And he's a big old brain. I love having a
- 31:17Speaker 1: conversation with Luther. And again, sorry Luther that hopefully I'm
- 31:22Speaker 1: able to put you on the bar burner because I
- 31:24Speaker 1: miss having the family a part of this, but again
- 31:27Speaker 1: I'm the only one home. Sometimes you just gotta make
- 31:29Speaker 1: it happen. Just like aren't be able at Dollar General.
- 31:32Speaker 1: So hopefully everybody else had a great sinkle to mile,
- 31:35Speaker 1: learned a little something, and maybe, just maybe you have
- 31:38Speaker 1: a Dollar General meal that you can send my way
- 31:40Speaker 1: that we can do on an upcoming episode. Again, from
- 31:43Speaker 1: the bottom of my beard, thank you for taking some time.
- 31:45Speaker 1: I hear a busy day, hopefully enjoyed. If you did,
- 31:48Speaker 1: do the thumbs up, the share of the or don't.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I don't know. Let's get out of here. We're all busy.
- 31:53Speaker 3: That's all I got.
- 31:53Speaker 1: We'll be back next week. Take care, everybody knocking.

- 32:09Speaker 3: Gonna be a long ride.
