Sam: Hey there, and welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about 'Like' by Megan C. Reynolds. Sophie, I have to ask, have you ever caught yourself refreshing your phone to see if someone liked that post you just put up?
• 0:15
Sophie: Oh, all the time. And this book explains exactly why that itch feels so irresistible. Reynolds is asking, what does it really mean to be liked, and what are we giving up to chase that little heart icon?
• 0:28
Sam: Right. And she starts with the history of the like button itself. When Facebook introduced it in 2009, it seemed like a harmless shortcut. But she argues it turned human connection into a quantifiable metric.
• 0:42
Sophie: Exactly. Instead of having to type a response, we just click. And suddenly, every interaction becomes something you can count and compare. That shift had huge consequences we're still dealing with.
• 0:55
Sam: One of the things that hit me hardest was her concept of the 'performative present.' You know, where you're not actually living a moment, you're staging it for an invisible audience.
• 1:06
Sophie: Yes. A beautiful sunset becomes content. A family dinner becomes a photo op. She says that constant performance creates a split in our consciousness. Part of you is always wondering how this will be received.
• 1:21
Sam: And there's research she cites showing that people who post more about their lives actually report lower satisfaction with those experiences. So performing happiness might actually undermine our ability to feel it.
• 1:35
Sophie: That's the tragic irony. And then she goes into the neuroscience. Every time you get a notification, your brain gets a little hit of dopamine. The platforms are designed like slot machines, unpredictable rewards to keep you hooked.
• 1:50
Sam: Our brains didn't evolve for this. In ancestral times, approval came from a small group you knew. Now it's from hundreds of strangers based on a curated version of ourselves. We're starving for real connection while gorging on counterfeit.
• 2:05
Sophie: And she's not just blaming technology. She's really thoughtful about it. She acknowledges social media can be a lifeline for marginalized groups. The problem is the business model, engagement is what makes money, and insecurity keeps us engaging.
• 2:22
Sam: There's a section on algorithmic curation that blew my mind. The content we see isn't neutral, it's picked to provoke strong emotions. So the world starts to seem more dramatic and polarized than it actually is.
• 2:36
Sophie: We're being programmed to see the world a certain way, and the programmers are motivated by profit, not truth. That's a scary thought.
• 2:45
Sam: She also pulls back the curtain on the influencer economy. These people are working incredibly hard, but they're trapped in a system where they have to constantly perform and measure their worth in engagement.
• 2:58
Sophie: The book documents the burnout and identity crises that happen behind the scenes. It's not sustainable.
• 3:05
Sam: One part I really appreciated was where she talks to people who tried to opt out, deleted their accounts, limited screen time. They felt relief, but they also struggled because the whole culture expects you to be online.
• 3:18
Sophie: She argues that individual solutions aren't enough. We need systemic change, platforms designed to support flourishing, not addiction. And she offers a historical perspective too. The desire for approval isn't new; what's new is the scale and speed.
• 3:35
Sam: Right. In the past, social approval was slow and local. Now it's instant and global. Our brains just can't handle that mismatch.
• 3:45
Sophie: She calls for 'digital wisdom', using technology intentionally instead of being used by it. Setting boundaries, prioritizing real relationships, finding validation from within.
• 3:56
Sam: The book ends with a vision of healthier digital spaces. Platforms that reward depth over breadth, genuine connection over passive consumption. It's idealistic, but she makes you believe it's necessary.
• 4:10
Sophie: For me, the takeaway is that we're more than our likes and followers. We're complex humans who deserve better than what the attention economy offers. And if we can resist the slot machine in our pocket, we might find our way back to each other.
• 4:26
Sam: Yeah. That's the thing I'm taking away too. It's not about quitting social media cold turkey, but about waking up to how it's designed and making conscious choices.
• 4:36
Sophie: And honestly, if you want to go deeper, the whole library's over on 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, it starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 4:58
Sam: Well said, Sophie. 'Like' is a mirror held up to our digital lives, and it's both uncomfortable and liberating.
• 5:06
Sophie: It really is. We'll see you in the next one.
