- 0:01Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:08kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 24th.
- 0:14Today is United Nations Day, an annual observance that
- 0:17commemorates the founding of the United Nations on October 24th,
- 0:211945. On this day, 80 years ago, the
- 0:27UN Charter officially entered into force after being ratified
- 0:30by the majority of its signatories, including the five
- 0:35permanent members of the Security Council.
- 0:38The United Nations was born from the ashes of World War 2, when
- 0:42delegates from 51 countries gathered to create an
- 0:45international organization dedicated to maintaining peace
- 0:49and security, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian
- 0:54aid, an upholding international law.
- 0:58In 1947, the UN General Assembly declared October 24th as the day
- 1:04to make known the aims and achievements of the United
- 1:07Nations and gain support for its work.
- 1:09What makes United Nations Day significant is its reminder that
- 1:14despite our differences in language, culture and politics,
- 1:18the nations of the world can come together around shared
- 1:21values and common goals. Today, the UN consists of 193
- 1:27member states working collectively to address
- 1:30challenges that no single nation can solve alone.
- 1:34And that brings us to today's quote from former UN Secretary
- 1:38General Dag Hammerschel, who once said the UN was not created
- 1:45to take humanity to heaven, but to save it from hell.
- 1:51Hammerschuld's blunt observation captures the realistic yet
- 1:54essential mission of the United Nations.
- 1:58He understood that the UN isn't about creating a perfect world.
- 2:02It's about preventing the worst from happening.
- 2:05It's about stopping wars, preventing genocide, delivering
- 2:09food to the starving, and providing refuge for those
- 2:13fleeing violence. Think about what saving humanity
- 2:17from hell really means. It means UN peacekeepers
- 2:22standing between warring factions.
- 2:25It means refugee agencies providing shelter to millions
- 2:29displaced by conflict. It means health organizations
- 2:33coordinating responses to pandemics.
- 2:37It means diplomats working tirelessly to prevent conflicts
- 2:40from escalating. These aren't glamorous tasks,
- 2:45and they don't always succeed. But they represent humanity's
- 2:49collective commitment to preventing the kinds of
- 2:52catastrophes that marked the first half of the 20th century.
- 2:56Hamerschold himself embodied this mission.
- 2:59He died in 1961 in a plane crash while on a peace mission to the
- 3:03Congo, literally giving his life in service to preventing further
- 3:07violence. He knew the UN wasn't perfect,
- 3:11but he also knew it was necessary.
- 3:15United Nations Day reminds us that global cooperation, however
- 3:19imperfect, is preferable to the alternative.
- 3:23A world where nations act purely in self-interest, where the
- 3:28strong dominate the weak, and where there's no international
- 3:32forum for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
- 3:35So today, think about Hammerschold's wisdom and what
- 3:38the United Nations represents. How can you contribute to the
- 3:43work of preventing hell and promoting peace in your own
- 3:46sphere of influence? Maybe it's supporting
- 3:49organizations that do humanitarian work.
- 3:53Maybe it's learning about global issues and advocating for
- 3:56policies that promote peace and cooperation.
- 4:00Maybe it's simply approaching disagreements in your own life
- 4:04with the spirit of diplomacy rather than conflict.
- 4:08EU NS work reminds us that peace isn't the absence of
- 4:12disagreement. It's the presence of systems and
- 4:16commitments that help us resolve disagreements without violence.
- 4:22Every time we choose dialogue over conflict, cooperation over
- 4:27confrontation, we're embodying EU NS mission in our daily
- 4:32lives. That's it for today.
- 4:37Thanks for listening. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:40for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
