- 0:03Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football.
- 0:07Speaker 3: The Insider I've covered a while.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald too cute.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Let's dial down the cube and just play football.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:19Speaker 2: and with the career r b e W Local sixty eight.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's Leggy, Yeah, yeah, yeah. On Altitude Sports Radio five.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This football season, we got the Jeff Jeff, Jeff Jeff.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I'll start Jef, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff Jeff.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:42Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers ib W Local sixty eight. Start with
- 0:46Speaker 1: the job and with the career.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I actually think Jeff should feel redeemed, though, because I
- 0:51Speaker 2: think Sean might have at least equal amount of spite
- 0:54Speaker 2: from Mike Cliffs, if not more than he does for
- 0:57Speaker 2: Jeff Legwell.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I don't know, Jeff, how's that fair? And how's that competition?
- 1:03Speaker 4: I'd say the spin level is pretty high, you know.
- 1:07Speaker 4: On my end, I'll just say that.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I gotta play you. I'm going to start at the
- 1:12Speaker 1: finish and play you to me. This was just so
- 1:18Speaker 1: appropriate and symbolic of the entire year with Sean Payne
- 1:22Speaker 1: the last minute of his press conference. We go through
- 1:25Speaker 1: a whole season, everything, and I think so much you
- 1:29Speaker 1: could sum up about this year in the last fifty
- 1:33Speaker 1: seconds of things Sean Payne had to say about this year.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Let me play it for everybody.
- 1:38Speaker 3: My question.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Oh okay, okay, what was your question? What exactly what
- 1:42Speaker 1: was your question? I'm only to play last. Okay, so
- 1:46Speaker 1: this is an answer, no, no, but what was your question?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Because it'll it'll be fun to get to this. The
- 1:51Speaker 1: nature of your question was what.
- 1:54Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You played three of the of the final four in
- 1:59Speaker 4: the AFC. When you step back, do you see a gap?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Okay, okay. This is how the year ended with Sean page.
- 2:09Speaker 5: We're not looking backwards, we're looking ahead, and it starts
- 2:12Speaker 5: with the division, you know, And there was a lot
- 2:15Speaker 5: of confidence in this team. If we could get past
- 2:19Speaker 5: that game the next game we had to play, we
- 2:24Speaker 5: felt real good about and so we're still obviously we're
- 2:32Speaker 5: still not there yet, and yet we're a lot closer
- 2:40Speaker 5: than we were at this time a year ago. That
- 2:44Speaker 5: was misery, sorrow, drudgery, give me some other adjectives there
- 2:53Speaker 5: just dah. That was well, it was brutal. Let's say that.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And then he goes, Dann, maybe you can find it.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I want the end of it too, where like he
- 3:07Speaker 1: paused and he goes, Okay, see everybody.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I tend to close them out. Sometimes.
- 3:17Speaker 4: That's why I wait for everyone to get their work done,
- 3:20Speaker 4: and then I dive in because I there's a good
- 3:23Speaker 4: chance I'm I'm ending the festivities.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Sometimes, that to me was everything. He was frustrated. He
- 3:30Speaker 1: was kind of in a miserable mood all year. There
- 3:33Speaker 1: was never any moments of real sunshine. It didn't seem
- 3:36Speaker 1: I think the happiest was when he was in West Virginia.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I have a memory of that. He says, they would
- 3:42Speaker 1: have basically beat Kansas City, like we would have taken
- 3:45Speaker 1: care of Kansas City had we got there, and he
- 3:49Speaker 1: threw punches at Russell Wilson on the way out the door.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Then it was like, okay, bye, everybody, see you later.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I mean, to me, Jeff was the combine, you know, like, if.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's not the quintessential season in a nutshell with Sean Payne,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I don't know what is. I can't imagine anything ending
- 4:09Speaker 1: more appropriately than dealing with Sean than the answer to
- 4:12Speaker 1: that question.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I guess I'm troubled by the you know, it wasn't
- 4:16Speaker 4: thirty one thirty last Sunday. I man, they lost thirty
- 4:19Speaker 4: one seven. And he's like, well, if we get by
- 4:21Speaker 4: that one, then we're gonna handle the chiefs. And I'm
- 4:25Speaker 4: I'm just not sure I'm poking the chiefs in any
- 4:28Speaker 4: fashion until till later.
- 4:31Speaker 3: But you know that's just me.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Well we'll never know.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, God so good.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, d Back and.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I were just talking about the Vance Joseph situation, and
- 4:40Speaker 2: you know, I think we're at least d Mac and
- 4:43Speaker 2: I are both at it. I do think that both
- 4:45Speaker 2: sides would happily say goodbye if there was a a
- 4:48Speaker 2: an opportunity out there for Vance Joseph to leave. But
- 4:52Speaker 2: I don't get the feeling that they would necessarily fire
- 4:54Speaker 2: Vance Joseph. Where are you at with that conversation.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I don't I don't get that vibe or that's not
- 5:01Speaker 4: been conveyed to me in any fashion. They everyone including
- 5:07Speaker 4: Sean believes he did a good job this year, a
- 5:09Speaker 4: great job this year. I mean that even Sunday, that
- 5:13Speaker 4: game's thirteen to seven with five minutes left, four minutes
- 5:16Speaker 4: left in the third quarter.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I mean, it's I'm not sure.
- 5:19Speaker 4: You can definitively say that got away from him only
- 5:23Speaker 4: on defense, and like nobody on the offensive staff should
- 5:27Speaker 4: get touched, but fire the defensive coordinator. I'm just not
- 5:31Speaker 4: sure that's you know, what you're looking for. You know,
- 5:36Speaker 4: I think Sean Payton plays the long game on things,
- 5:40Speaker 4: and that you know, Jim Leonard would probably be the
- 5:43Speaker 4: replacement if Vance moved on or was not there, But
- 5:49Speaker 4: it's not been conveyed to me right now that he's
- 5:51Speaker 4: in trouble. But you know, I always tell people John
- 5:55Speaker 4: Fox didn't go into that meeting in twenty fourteen thinking
- 5:59Speaker 4: he was getting fired. He thought he was going in
- 6:01Speaker 4: to talk about staff changes and came out fired as
- 6:06Speaker 4: the head coach of the Denver Broncos. So you don't
- 6:09Speaker 4: know how the conversations are going to go the next
- 6:12Speaker 4: couple of weeks. But the next two weeks are kind
- 6:14Speaker 4: of the staff evaluations. You know, they'll go to the
- 6:18Speaker 4: Senior Bowl and then you know, all the player you know,
- 6:22Speaker 4: they'll give the coaches a week and then they come
- 6:24Speaker 4: back and start digging in on moving forward.
- 6:27Speaker 2: So this is probably a mood point because I don't
- 6:29Speaker 2: think it would happen either way. But I was actually
- 6:31Speaker 2: just texting you about this as well, and I get
- 6:33Speaker 2: different answers on this question all the time, depending on
- 6:37Speaker 2: who I'm talking to, and the question is simply this.
- 6:41Speaker 2: If a coordinator vance Joseph in theory, is offered a
- 6:44Speaker 2: new job as a coordinator on a new team, but
- 6:47Speaker 2: they throw in assistant head coach on there, can the
- 6:50Speaker 2: current team block it? Because I've gotten radically different responses
- 6:54Speaker 2: to that by people that that I trust, and nobody
- 6:56Speaker 2: really seems to know the true answer on that.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I mean, what GMS tell me, Tyler, and what I've
- 7:02Speaker 4: always been told is you can't block a true promotion.
- 7:05Speaker 4: So if he's assistant head coach without play calling duties,
- 7:10Speaker 4: I think it's much more difficult for the new team
- 7:13Speaker 4: to say that's a promotion and avoid the just by
- 7:17Speaker 4: giving him the title. If he has less power than
- 7:22Speaker 4: he did at his current job, I think it's difficult.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Now.
- 7:25Speaker 4: I've always been told you can't block a true promotion,
- 7:28Speaker 4: but I've never actually seen it in writing.
- 7:31Speaker 3: That's what That's what I always I always say.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Okay, And I don't know of any team that's ever
- 7:35Speaker 4: blocked a true promotion.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I guess I should say that too.
- 7:38Speaker 1: What were your big takeaways hearing from Sean George and
- 7:41Speaker 1: Greg Penner yesterday.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I thought, when you'd really dig into it, they like
- 7:50Speaker 4: they obviously believe they found a quarterback they can win with,
- 7:53Speaker 4: but they were very measured in saying he's the forever
- 7:57Speaker 4: solution or whatever people want them to say about it.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And I think Sean, you know, alluded to the difficulties
- 8:09Speaker 4: bo had in his rookie year against pressure and on
- 8:12Speaker 4: third down, and the metrics are are very telling. I mean,
- 8:16Speaker 4: only the Giants in Carolina had more three and outs
- 8:20Speaker 4: than the Broncos this year, and that's just a fact.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You know that. It's interesting because I actually felt that
- 8:29Speaker 2: was unusual because all year long, Sean Payton has talked
- 8:33Speaker 2: about bo Nix in the complete opposite manner, like this
- 8:36Speaker 2: dude is the hero. He's God's gift, the second coming
- 8:39Speaker 2: to Jesus.
- 8:40Speaker 3: You're prepping for games.
- 8:42Speaker 4: You know that Tyler, he wants him to feel like
- 8:44Speaker 4: Superman when he walks out there.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Why back off?
- 8:47Speaker 1: Now?
- 8:48Speaker 3: I don't think they backed off.
- 8:50Speaker 4: I just think he had a few minutes to think
- 8:52Speaker 4: about it, and uh, you can't. I mean, they didn't
- 8:58Speaker 4: score against the good teams. I mean that's just and
- 9:01Speaker 4: it's fine. You know, the playoff a playoff return is
- 9:06Speaker 4: a success, yes, but you know they've got six of
- 9:11Speaker 4: the six of the ten wins against teams that are
- 9:14Speaker 4: picking in the top ten of the draft. I mean,
- 9:16Speaker 4: that's you feasted on. You know, you did what you
- 9:21Speaker 4: should do if you're improving, you beat the really bad teams.
- 9:25Speaker 4: But they also conversely lost to all the really good teams.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And you know that's where they're at right now.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Free agency, that's the next big thing, I suppose after
- 9:37Speaker 1: the combine and kind of I do both those things
- 9:41Speaker 1: at the same time. Who are some potential targets. What
- 9:44Speaker 1: would they have to do if they wanted, say t Higgins,
- 9:47Speaker 1: if they really wanted a thirty million dollar receiver, they
- 9:51Speaker 1: want to go crazy there, and what do you think
- 9:53Speaker 1: they're inclinations?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Maybe well, you know, it depends on you know, they
- 9:59Speaker 4: going for the you know, the nice bonus or what
- 10:04Speaker 4: they really need, you know, inside linebacker, possibly a safety,
- 10:09Speaker 4: tight end, running back.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I think those needs are greater.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Than a you know, hugely big contract on a receiver.
- 10:20Speaker 4: But it just depends where they come down and all that. Now,
- 10:22Speaker 4: they talked yesterday on both sides of the ball a
- 10:26Speaker 4: lot about what they what they in house called the
- 10:29Speaker 4: internal triangle, which is, you know, the through the middle
- 10:33Speaker 4: you know in baseball would be your you know, catcher, shortstop,
- 10:37Speaker 4: second basement, center fielder type thing. You know they're talking.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I mean, look where they've got hounded this year on
- 10:45Speaker 4: both sides of the ball. It's because they don't have
- 10:47Speaker 4: a tight end that challenges people down the hash and
- 10:50Speaker 4: they don't defend the interior of the run box very well,
- 10:55Speaker 4: and ultimately those hurt them the most against the big team.
- 11:00Speaker 4: T Higgins gives bo Nix and everybody else a lot
- 11:04Speaker 4: more options with the ball that it doesn't fix your
- 11:06Speaker 4: two main problems. So it's just how they approach that
- 11:10Speaker 4: element of it. If you do sign a player like
- 11:12Speaker 4: T Higgins, that's an awful lot of your cap space,
- 11:16Speaker 4: et cetera, et cetera. And they do have some cap space,
- 11:21Speaker 4: but they they are I like everyone just conveniently swept
- 11:24Speaker 4: under the rug yesterday that they are carrying thirty three
- 11:27Speaker 4: million dollars of dead money already and they've slapped voidable
- 11:32Speaker 4: years on almost every contract they have in house, so
- 11:36Speaker 4: their salary cap issues aren't going away anytime soon.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I thought it was interesting that it felt like he
- 11:43Speaker 2: was pretty clear that he was not satisfied with Marvin
- 11:46Speaker 2: Memes in the joker role. And I do think that
- 11:49Speaker 2: he was absolutely using Marvin Mems in a joker role.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Did you feel the same way that I felt about that?
- 11:57Speaker 4: I thought, well, ultimately they did do was it forced
- 12:00Speaker 4: them to give him snaps and then he showed them, Look,
- 12:05Speaker 4: I'm a pretty damn good receiver too, if you just
- 12:08Speaker 4: put me on the field, And I think that was
- 12:11Speaker 4: the success part of putting him at running back at times.
- 12:15Speaker 3: But yeah, he's they know he's not a.
- 12:17Speaker 4: True what Peyton would use as a joker in his offense,
- 12:23Speaker 4: but he was the closest they had. But yeah, no,
- 12:26Speaker 4: they he doesn't. He certainly doesn't think that's the future
- 12:30Speaker 4: for Marvin Mims, and I think they. I think that's
- 12:34Speaker 4: one thing they came away with that that he showed
- 12:38Speaker 4: some real promise as a receiver and it's up to
- 12:41Speaker 4: them to now push that to the next step because
- 12:46Speaker 4: it's very clear at the end of the year, bo
- 12:48Speaker 4: Nicks had the most confidence throwing the ball in a
- 12:50Speaker 4: tight window to Courtland Sutton or Marvin Mims.
- 12:54Speaker 2: If you go after a joker in the draft, is
- 12:58Speaker 2: that a first round selection or is that later on?
- 13:02Speaker 4: Well, it was rarely our first rounder when he did
- 13:04Speaker 4: it in New Orleans. You know, Reggie Bush obviously was,
- 13:07Speaker 4: but you know a lot of the other guys who've
- 13:10Speaker 4: played it through for him through the years, it's have
- 13:13Speaker 4: not been. It's more of a skill set, really a
- 13:16Speaker 4: rare skill set. I mean in this draft. In my
- 13:19Speaker 4: you know, I'm pretty well through a first couple swings
- 13:24Speaker 4: through the top four or five rounds on the board.
- 13:28Speaker 4: But you know the Warren is the best candidate. It's
- 13:32Speaker 4: just a matter of do you deem that enough value
- 13:35Speaker 4: to take it as early as you're going to have
- 13:37Speaker 4: to to get him. But he has all the the
- 13:41Speaker 4: fun things about that in addition to being a he's
- 13:46Speaker 4: not just a good athlete who can throw the ball.
- 13:49Speaker 4: He's actually a passer who understands coverages when he throws
- 13:53Speaker 4: the ball that's wild.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Is it a true six seven or is he a
- 13:58Speaker 1: little under that.
- 14:00Speaker 4: I think he'll be a true six to six or
- 14:02Speaker 4: six five and seven eighths or something like that. I
- 14:05Speaker 4: think he's right there. No, he's he's everything. He's a
- 14:10Speaker 4: real runner with the ball too. He's not just a
- 14:12Speaker 4: big guy sort of lumbering around. He's he runs with vision.
- 14:17Speaker 4: He's not quite brock powers as a receiver, but not
- 14:19Speaker 4: many people are on this planet, so I think that's
- 14:23Speaker 4: an unfair comparison. But he's he's a tremendous athlete.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I really like him as a as a prospect ya too.
- 14:31Speaker 1: But again, his hype is going to go way up
- 14:34Speaker 1: like at twenty and it's.
- 14:37Speaker 4: A thin board. This is a thin board. I've talked
- 14:39Speaker 4: to general managers, you know. I always tell people most years,
- 14:45Speaker 4: if there are twenty three, twenty four first round grades
- 14:49Speaker 4: by teams, that's a good year in a draft. There
- 14:52Speaker 4: There's never been thirty two in my entire career of
- 14:55Speaker 4: doing this, But I've had one GM tell me he
- 15:00Speaker 4: thought there was only fourteen or fifteen true first.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Round grades on this board.
- 15:04Speaker 4: So a lot of it will be a lot of
- 15:07Speaker 4: opinion but between now and then. But it's not considered
- 15:10Speaker 4: an awesome draft. But there's the ability to find players
- 15:15Speaker 4: is there.
- 15:15Speaker 3: And there are plenty of guys who can help the Broncos.
- 15:18Speaker 4: I mean Nick Benito is a second round pick, So
- 15:20Speaker 4: let's not get all frosty about first round or bust
- 15:24Speaker 4: or anything.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Hey, real quick, because they're yelling at me that we
- 15:26Speaker 2: have to break they're about to be Do you think that,
- 15:29Speaker 2: Jalen Milrow and even a Quinn yours, we'll sneak into
- 15:32Speaker 2: the first.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Round Quarterbacks, Tyler, I never leave anything off the table.
- 15:37Speaker 4: People will always overdraft quarterbacks because if you love them enough,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you want that fifth year option, no matter if that's
- 15:46Speaker 4: where you have created or not.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Jeff kod Job. On the end of
- 15:51Speaker 1: the year, it was miserable, awful. What else, Give me
- 15:56Speaker 1: some adjectives, Throw me some adjectives out there.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Okay, you just kind of drop up brutal in there
- 16:01Speaker 3: before you go brutal.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Thanks, Jeff, I talk to you later. Jeff Blagwell. Brought
- 16:08Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
