- 0:00Thank you. Well, hello there and welcome to another
- 0:06episode of Abby the Podcast Lady. If you are
- 0:10watching the YouTube version of this, you can
- 0:12probably see that I am once again sitting at
- 0:14the end of the dock recording a podcast from
- 0:16the lake and I'm batch recording, practicing
- 0:19what I preach. I am batch recording my show,
- 0:21doing multiple at a time, but I am on my own
- 0:24version of a vacation right now, just taking
- 0:26a few days to work from the lake instead of working
- 0:28from my house or my studio. And it has been just
- 0:31absolutely magical. I mean, look at this view
- 0:33behind me. That's our owl. His name is Yellerbelly.
- 0:37Not the point of the podcast. Welcome to the
- 0:39show. Thank you for being here. Today, I want
- 0:40to talk about how you can podcast truly from
- 0:43anywhere with how technology has advanced even
- 0:46in the past few years. And prime example of that,
- 0:48I'm sitting at the end of my dock making a podcast
- 0:50right now. You can truly podcast from anywhere.
- 0:52Some of the craziest places I've actually podcasted
- 0:55from, I have podcasted from the back room at
- 0:58a sports bar. I have podcasted from a over 100
- 1:02-year -old grandstand. county fairgrounds. I
- 1:05have podcasted from a flower field. There's been
- 1:08a lot of different places that I have drug my
- 1:10equipment to and set up and it has gotten easier
- 1:12than ever. When I first started podcasting, I
- 1:15was using a PodTrack P4 recorder, which I still
- 1:19have. I still love my PodTrack P4. It is so incredibly
- 1:22convenient and it's just so easy to take with
- 1:25you everywhere. And it's battery operated, so
- 1:28you can just like shove batteries in it. That's
- 1:30how I could record from a grandstand at a county
- 1:31fair, like no power needed. It's all in the PodTrack
- 1:34P4 and I'll put a little picture of it right
- 1:36here too. But I was using that. I was using two
- 1:38Zoom microphones, which I think are actually
- 1:41really good microphones. The best of both our
- 1:43worlds. Hannah Montana Rewatch Podcast has been
- 1:45using those lately. I think they're great quality
- 1:47for a really great price point. They are XLR
- 1:50microphones. So you do need to have a special
- 1:52cable and a special converter to use those. But
- 1:55I was starting my podcasting business. Oh gosh,
- 1:58we're creeping up on four years ago now. And
- 2:01that was the technology. was using then and my
- 2:03kit has totally changed to now so right now I
- 2:06am actually recording this podcast on a extra
- 2:08muse camera which is a gimbal camera kind of
- 2:12like the dji osmo pocket that's what this is
- 2:15it's just a different company I love my extra
- 2:18muse camera I actually love the whole extra brand
- 2:20of cameras I think they're fantastic and I would
- 2:23point anyone in the direction of buying one of
- 2:25those and then for a microphone I just have my
- 2:27dji mic mini clipped onto my shirt right here
- 2:30and it actually connects wirelessly to the extra
- 2:33Muse camera. So this is my current on the go
- 2:36podcast kit. And this is actually what I used
- 2:38when I was at Podfest. I recorded a bunch of
- 2:41client content at Podfest because my clients
- 2:43from across the country were all conveniently
- 2:45in one place. We were doing some batching content
- 2:47there. But what I would do is I would set up
- 2:49this extra Muse camera and then wirelessly connect
- 2:51my wireless microphones, give them each a microphone,
- 2:54and then they would record their shows. And it
- 2:56was so simple, so convenient. This whole kit
- 2:59fit into my purse. Like this camera, this extra
- 3:02muse camera, it's only about this big. Well,
- 3:04they're itty bitty. They're teeny tiny little
- 3:05microphones, but they pack a big punch. And so
- 3:07it was just so convenient to every morning, wake
- 3:10up, throw my camera, throw my microphones into
- 3:12my purse, and we could record podcasts anywhere
- 3:14that we were at. That's what I love about how
- 3:17technology is changing with podcasting and doing
- 3:20it on the go. You can truly do it from anywhere
- 3:22with almost anything. I've been recently watching
- 3:25the latest season of Only Murders in the Building,
- 3:27which is the Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena
- 3:29Gomez. Gomez show about a group of friends running
- 3:32a podcast about murders that happen in their
- 3:35building. And as I was watching the show, I was
- 3:37kind of clocking it for what equipment they're
- 3:39using to run their podcast. I know it's a show.
- 3:41I know it's fake. I know Selena Gomez was moving
- 3:43the wrong sliders on the road podcaster and the
- 3:46power wasn't even on. But I was just kind of
- 3:49clocking, like, how are they portraying making
- 3:51a podcast in this TV show? And for the bulk of
- 3:53it, they were using a cell phone. They were holding
- 3:55their phone like this, talking into it, using
- 3:57probably the voice memo. app. I think when I
- 4:00screenshotted Meryl Streep holding it and recording
- 4:02into it, it just looked like the voice memo app
- 4:04that comes preloaded on all iPhones. And that's
- 4:07what they were using to record their show. And
- 4:09in that universe, they are like a top whatever
- 4:11podcast. So truly, you can do almost everything
- 4:15just from having a cell phone. Fancy gear is
- 4:17fun. I love it. I am a gear junkie. I think my
- 4:20number one hobby is just buying microphones and
- 4:23cameras. Like I truly, I truly love buying cameras
- 4:26off the TikTok shop. But you don't need more
- 4:28than just your cell phone to get started. I believe
- 4:30it was Jenna Kutcher. She is a coaching influencer
- 4:33person. She lives in Minnesota. But I think she
- 4:36started her podcast with just her phone. Maybe
- 4:38she had a simple microphone too. And her Gold
- 4:40Digger podcast is like a huge show. And she started
- 4:43very simply. I have a client who records onto
- 4:46her cell phone and just sits in her kid's closet
- 4:49to absorb some of the noise. It's nice and quiet.
- 4:51It sounds like a studio. You would never know
- 4:53she's just using her cell phone to record her
- 4:55show. And then on the flip side, I have the moxie
- 4:58crew from moxie creative we record their podcast
- 5:01once a month with every piece of gear i've ever
- 5:03owned it's a three camera setup four lights and
- 5:06a board and cables running absolutely everywhere
- 5:09but that's what works for them and in all reality
- 5:13the best setup for your podcast is the one that's
- 5:16easiest for you to record on for me today having
- 5:19my extra muse camera and my dji mic mini that's
- 5:22the easiest thing i can do to start cranking
- 5:24out some content and batching while i'm on vacation
- 5:26if have your cell phone on you constantly and
- 5:28you are in your car a lot maybe you drive a lot
- 5:31for work open up the voice memo app and just
- 5:33record on your phone in the car surprisingly
- 5:35cars are one of the best places to record audio
- 5:39and video just because it's like a contained
- 5:41fabric rich environment so you don't get the
- 5:44echo it's nice and enclosed and for the most
- 5:47part it's pretty private if you're driving around
- 5:48like with just you in the car it's your own time
- 5:52you might as well use it to create something
- 5:54and what's beautiful about that is you can just
- 5:56open up the voice memo app and just start rambling
- 5:58and then edit out everything you don't want everyone
- 6:00to hear. It's not like you're live streaming
- 6:02your consciousness. So that's another really
- 6:04great way to podcast on the go and truly from
- 6:07anywhere. Another awesome thing to use is if
- 6:11you have a GoPro. GoPros work great because they
- 6:13are so tiny and so portable. Like they're meant
- 6:15to be taken absolutely everywhere. And GoPro
- 6:18audio has come a long way in a lot of years.
- 6:21I remember I had the GoPro Hero 1, I think. This
- 6:24was like 10. years ago and the audio on that
- 6:27thing was just trash i was supposed to make a
- 6:29youtube video every single week for my work and
- 6:32the audio was just so bad on it and then i got
- 6:35the gopro session which didn't have that like
- 6:38hard shell case on the outside of it and i thought
- 6:40the audio would get better and it really didn't
- 6:42because it was waterproof like they needed to
- 6:44like seal everything up and it was just bad but
- 6:46it's come a long way because i just got the extra
- 6:48edge pro which is like a gopro dupe i guess you
- 6:51could say it's an action camera but the audio
- 6:53on it is much better and you can connect wireless
- 6:56microphones to gopros now so you can just set
- 7:00it up wherever you get a nice wide angle so you
- 7:02can fit yourself in there maybe you have a guest
- 7:03in there that you're interviewing you get a nice
- 7:05field of view on it and you get crystal clear
- 7:07audio if you're hooking up a microphone to it
- 7:09and they are so great for just grabbing going
- 7:12sticking in your purse sticking in your pocket
- 7:14they're meant to be taken with you so make a
- 7:16podcast with them why not truly you can make
- 7:19a podcast from anywhere these days and if you
- 7:21have a cell phone there's absolutely absolutely
- 7:24nothing stopping you from doing this other than
- 7:26yourself. So take a bet on yourself and start
- 7:28recording. Hit record and see what happens. You
- 7:30truly never know where this is going to take
- 7:33you. So make that bet. Chances are you'll win
- 7:35it. And if you need help figuring out what gear
- 7:37to use, how to get started, guidance for your
- 7:40show, anything like that, I'm here to help. I'm
