- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Here's your latest national indigenous news on the Windspeaker Radio Network.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: I'm Brooklyn Britton.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: A volunteer team of military veterans, first responders, and citizens have arrived to help Manitoba's Peg was First Nation fight what is threatening to be a devastating flood.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization, arrived at the community 180 kilometers north of Winnipeg and is busy mobilizing personnel and resources to assist.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Up to 100 volunteers are expected to continue arriving through the week to support sandbagging to protect homes and infrastructure.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: The ceremony was the second part of a two-part speaker and learning series focused on indigenization, cultural health literacy, and creating a space for more elders and indigenous community members to share with students.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Elder Sheila DeCourt of Fort William First Nation, who has undertaken water walks in the city for the last eight years, explained that the ceremony was a way to honor late grandmother Water Walker from Week Wam Bekong, who previously embarked on much larger walks around Boulevard Lake for several years in the springtime.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: DeCourt says it's urgent that elders target and educate our youth because there are future generations that will hopefully be picking up this responsibility.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: She added that if we do not start educating our youth now, it will be much harder for them to want to gravitate and start caring for the water.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And in Alberta, the National Film Board of Canada will screen a new Cree language subtitled version of Foster Child at the Dream Speakers International Film Festival on Saturday, April 18th at the Landmark Cinemas in Edmonton.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Foster Child is directed by the late filmmaker Gil Cardinal.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: The film came out back in 1987 and was recently subtitled with Cree Syllabic subtitles, a collaboration between local Edmonton elders.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: The NFB will add this version of the film to its Indigenous Cinema collection on NFB.ca on April 20th, a collection which includes 60 films subtitled or dubbed in Indigenous languages.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: That is your National Indigenous News.
