- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16And today we are in James chapter 5 and verses 7 through
- 0:2012, James 5, seven through 12, the pastor of the Church of
- 0:25Jerusalem and the half brother of Jesus, James.
- 0:29He is writing to some people that used to be a part of his
- 0:32congregation. Now they're all across the Roman
- 0:34Empire as a result of persecution.
- 0:37And here at the end of the book, he is encouraging them to be
- 0:42patient, both with their circumstances and he's
- 0:45encouraging them to be patient and loving and kind with each
- 0:50other. And so let's read through our
- 0:52verses for today and I believe it'll be an encouragement to
- 0:55you. And I'm looking forward to this
- 0:57time together in verse #7. Therefore, brothers and sisters,
- 1:02be patient until the Lord's coming.
- 1:04See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and
- 1:08his patient with it until it receives the early and the late
- 1:12rains. You also must be patient.
- 1:15Strengthen your hearts because the Lord's coming is near.
- 1:19Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another so
- 1:23that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the
- 1:28door. Brothers and sisters, take the
- 1:31prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of suffering
- 1:35and patience. See, we count as blessed those
- 1:39who have endured. You have heard of Job's
- 1:42endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought
- 1:45about. The Lord is compassionate and
- 1:48merciful above all. My brothers and sisters, do not
- 1:52swear neither by heaven or by earth or with any other oath,
- 1:57but let your yes mean yes and your no mean no so that you
- 2:02won't fall under judgment. All right?
- 2:07There's a couple of different things that play that we're
- 2:08going to see together. And first of these is in verse
- 2:12#7 where James encourages the believers to be patient.
- 2:17And he says with one specific end goal in mind.
- 2:20It's not just be patient for the sake of patients, but we are
- 2:25patient. We, we deal with, we endure
- 2:28hardship. We don't bring down the hammer
- 2:33for a reason, and it is because Jesus is coming back and he says
- 2:38be patient until the Lord's coming.
- 2:41There is a day when your patience with other people, your
- 2:45patience with your spouse, your patience with your neighbors,
- 2:48your patience at your job, it is going to pay off.
- 2:53And he gives the example here of a farmer that a farmer plants
- 2:58some seeds and he waters it. He might weed, you know, he'll,
- 3:03he'll do different irrigation things.
- 3:05He's maybe putting up some fences or some wire or something
- 3:10to try and or a scarecrow to try and keep away birds or animals
- 3:14that would want to try and get to this planted fruit until he's
- 3:21trying to guard it. So that, but it's it survives.
- 3:25And he says the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth
- 3:30and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late
- 3:34rains. So he says this just as a farmer
- 3:39is planting and he's waiting and he's protecting, looking forward
- 3:44to a specific time. So you and I, when we are
- 3:48patient here on this earth, we do so planting a seed that is
- 3:53going to come to fruition when Jesus returns, that we will be
- 3:57rewarded for our obedience to the Lord in this area.
- 4:02That he will say, well done, you good and faithful servant.
- 4:05You didn't fly off the handle. You didn't react with harshness.
- 4:10You didn't react in a unspiritual, wrathful, angry,
- 4:16bitter way. Instead, you patiently endured
- 4:20what you were going through. I know I've got some of my
- 4:23friends that listen to this and you have some health struggles.
- 4:26And I want you to know that the patience that you are exercising
- 4:31right now, that you are still choosing to believe in Jesus and
- 4:35to trust in Him even through your physical hardships, God
- 4:39sees that. And either when Jesus returns or
- 4:43when you go to meet the Lord, there is going to be a heavenly
- 4:48reward from the King of kings for the patience that you have
- 4:52shown. And if you will from this verse,
- 4:55the patience that you have sown SOWN, God views that as
- 5:02valuable. And it's because patience is a
- 5:06fruit of the Holy Spirit taking up residence within your heart
- 5:10and life. And so when you allow the Holy
- 5:12Spirit to work, God will bless that.
- 5:16So want to encourage you, whether it's in circumstances,
- 5:19keep on going through, don't give up.
- 5:21Don't give up on the Lord. Don't give up on exercising your
- 5:24faith. Keep on doing it because the
- 5:29harvest time is coming. So keep on watering.
- 5:33Keep on wedding. It's worth it.
- 5:35Keep on going. Verse #8 James says.
- 5:38You also must be patient, strengthen your hearts because
- 5:43the Lord's coming is near. So we're commanded to be
- 5:47patient. It's not an option.
- 5:49And he says to strengthen your hearts, this would be to take
- 5:53courage. It it means that you need to
- 5:56have a firm resolve in light of Jesus's return and in spite of
- 6:03trying circumstances. He says this you will naturally
- 6:07want to give up. Don't allow what is natural to
- 6:11you to be what determines your actions.
- 6:14Instead, volitionally choose. I'm going to take courage.
- 6:18I think of David when, well, we don't have time to go into the
- 6:22whole story, but at one point all of his, his wives, his kids,
- 6:29his stuff, his men's wives and kids and all of their stuff, it
- 6:35was all taken away from their city.
- 6:37Their city was burned down and the men wanted to kill David.
- 6:41And Scripture says that David encouraged himself in the Lord
- 6:46his God, recognizing that Jesus is going to come back,
- 6:50recognizing that one day you're going to be in front of him.
- 6:55Make that affect how you act today.
- 6:58Let that strengthen your resolve, give you courage to
- 7:02face whatever it is that you are facing today and whatever's
- 7:05coming tomorrow, because you know, it's not going to be long.
- 7:10I, I've got some of my friends on here.
- 7:12I know that are, I think I've got at least one friend who's in
- 7:16his 80s right now. And I know he has told me
- 7:20before, like, man, life goes by so quick.
- 7:22You know, one day you're just starting off and maybe you're
- 7:27getting married, maybe you're having kids.
- 7:29And then just a blink of an eye and you turn around and your
- 7:34whole life is behind you and you are that much closer to being in
- 7:39the presence of Jesus. So allow that to encourage you
- 7:42that when you have that resolve of patience, you're not giving
- 7:46up, you're not going to lash out, you're not going to quit.
- 7:51Realize, OK, reward day is coming.
- 7:55I was one that I love getting good grades in school.
- 8:00And so I was always working as hard as I possibly could so that
- 8:05when there was, you know, a, a grading of a test or of a
- 8:09project, that that there would be an A on that for me.
- 8:13And I wanted to get as close to perfect as I could.
- 8:16And so as I approach the day where I'm reunited with my
- 8:19Savior, I want that passing grade.
- 8:21I want to hear well done you good and faithful servant.
- 8:25Then James takes kind of a a different aspect of this in
- 8:29verse 9. He says brothers and sisters do
- 8:32not complain about one another so that you will not be judged.
- 8:37Look, the judge stands at the door, or as the new Living
- 8:42Translation puts it, don't grumble about each other,
- 8:47brothers and sisters, or you will be judged for Look, the
- 8:50judge is standing at the door here.
- 8:55James says this. A lot of times we think if we
- 9:00are rude to someone's face that that would be maybe a sin.
- 9:06Although I know some people, that's well, I know human
- 9:11nature. I'm not saying I know an
- 9:12individual that would do this. I know human nature.
- 9:15Very rarely do we ever take ownership for the words that we
- 9:21say. And it's like, oh, no, that
- 9:23wasn't gossip. I was just sharing a concern
- 9:27with someone that could not do anything about it.
- 9:29Or we might say, you know, maybe when we were rude to someone's
- 9:32face, be like, oh, no, I'm just direct.
- 9:36And I, I just don't beat around the Bush.
- 9:39I'm just up front. It's like, all right, it is that
- 9:43that's not how it really works here.
- 9:45James commands us, don't complain about one another.
- 9:52This can be so easy here. He's writing in a church
- 9:56context. It can be easy within the local
- 9:58church. All of us have people that we
- 9:59kind of naturally gravitate to that we've got a similar
- 10:03personality to, and so we just get along fantastically with
- 10:07them as opposed to sometimes there are people that our
- 10:11personalities don't really match up, but God has placed us within
- 10:15in the same church body and we can have an opportunity in those
- 10:20moments to go this person, she's always complaining and you're
- 10:25complaining about the other person's complaining.
- 10:27We can be like, oh man, this person just drives me nuts.
- 10:30I'd never say anything to him about it, but this person just
- 10:34drive me, drives me nuts. Let's not do that.
- 10:37That is sin. That is wrong and and I'll just
- 10:41like, you know, kind of pull the curtain back a little bit on on
- 10:44the pastoral side of things for you guys.
- 10:48A temptation that Satan wants me to embrace is complain about
- 10:54your like your church members complain about them, just become
- 10:59embittered at them. Because here's the deal.
- 11:02As a pastor, there's sometimes where people say or do things
- 11:07that are not godly. And in those moments, Satan
- 11:12wants to twist that, that instead of me getting the heart
- 11:15of Jesus, of I'm going to love and care for and try and like
- 11:20shepherd and correct and restore and put back on the right path
- 11:24and bring people back together. Satan wants me to go, oh, well,
- 11:30you should just like despise them and wish they were gone.
- 11:35And you should even complain about that person to another
- 11:39person in the church. And you can be the source of it.
- 11:42And you can just be like, oh, this is just a like quote, UN
- 11:45quote, pastoral concern, but you're not bringing it to that
- 11:48person. You're just bringing it to some
- 11:49other random person in the body. And that's not right.
- 11:53And when Satan wants me to do that, I've got to say, no,
- 11:57absolutely not. I'm not going to complain about
- 11:59my brothers and sisters. If I've got an issue, I'm going
- 12:03to go to them. I'm going to love them and I'm
- 12:06going to choose to be thankful that God placed them within this
- 12:11church because God has a reason for every single member of a
- 12:16church that is there. That's what we read in First
- 12:18Corinthians 12. The nose can't say to the ear.
- 12:21Oh, I don't need you. Paul goes at length about that
- 12:26in First Corinthians 12. So don't complain about one
- 12:30another. If we complain about each other,
- 12:32God will judge us and he James kind of puts the the pedal to
- 12:38the metal a little bit on this so that we would realize the
- 12:41seriousness of this. He says you're not just going to
- 12:43be judged by humans. In fact, the judge stands at the
- 12:48door that is Jesus, this one that is coming.
- 12:51He will not only reward patients, he will judge your
- 12:55complaining about that other person at church that you don't
- 12:59really like. So let us not complain about one
- 13:03another. Let us love one another.
- 13:05Let's be patient with each other.
- 13:08Whenever Satan wants to bring up a spirit of complaining in you
- 13:11or an I, let's say no, absolutely not.
- 13:15Like Jesus loves me and I know who I am.
- 13:18I know my faults. And so I'm going to choose to
- 13:21love others even when they have faults because Jesus does.
- 13:24And that's how Jesus has treated me and that's how I'm going to
- 13:27treat them. Verse #10 Brothers and sisters,
- 13:30take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of
- 13:35suffering and patience. When you look at the Old
- 13:37Testament and you see how the prophets of the Lord were
- 13:41treated many times they were killed, they were not listened
- 13:45to, they were harmed, they were driven out.
- 13:49Like it was not a popular thing to be a true prophet of Yahweh
- 13:55in the Old Testament. And James calls to mind for
- 13:59these believers who grew up reading the Old Testament.
- 14:03He says when it comes to suffering and patience and being
- 14:06treated wrong and how you respond to it, respond like the
- 14:11Old Testament prophets did. And then he gives an example of
- 14:16someone, and I believe this would be, oh, I, I don't
- 14:21remember how the exact breakdown of the Hebrew Old Testament, how
- 14:26they had it at this time where what they called the Tanakh,
- 14:28that is the Torah, which is the first five books of the Old
- 14:32Testament. Then they had the Nevaeem, which
- 14:35they called the the prophets. And that was the former and
- 14:41latter prophets, which was kind of from, if you will, about
- 14:45judges to second kings and then from Isaiah through the end of
- 14:54the minor prophets, more or less.
- 14:55And then you had the the Ketuvim, which was a smattering
- 15:00of the books of poetry, as well as a couple different prophets
- 15:04like Daniel and some of that. So here Job would be one that
- 15:09though he's not one we normally think of as a prophet, he was
- 15:13one that communicated with God and prayed for others and
- 15:17communicated with them. And so James here calls to mind
- 15:21Job. He says, see, we count as
- 15:23blessed those who have endured, or again, as the New Living
- 15:27Translation puts it, we give great honor to those who endure
- 15:31suffering. For instance, you know about
- 15:34Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was
- 15:39kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and
- 15:44mercy. And so James says, look at Job's
- 15:47life. And even though Job went through
- 15:49crazy hardship unlike anything that we will ever experience,
- 15:56even in his story, God was compassionate and merciful and
- 16:00kind to him. And so we can believe that we
- 16:03serve this same God who even in our hardships, he allows us to
- 16:09have endurance so that our faith is made mature, so that we can
- 16:13then experience the reward of the goodness of God at the end
- 16:18of our time of suffering. So he says, don't give up.
- 16:21Look at Job. Look at what Job received after
- 16:24suffering. So we can go through suffering
- 16:26as well, knowing that we serve the God of Job.
- 16:30And then last verse for today's verse 12.
- 16:33Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear neither by
- 16:35heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes
- 16:39mean yes and your no mean no so that you won't fall under
- 16:43judgement. This is a command to honesty and
- 16:47to forthrightness. So here's what would happen
- 16:49during this time. Jesus deals with this in the
- 16:52Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, verses 33 to 37.
- 16:57So someone would say, Oh yeah, you know, I'll, I'll get that
- 17:00done. I'll, I'll get this, you know,
- 17:02work, job done. I'll, I'll build that cabinet
- 17:06by, you know, Thursday. You know, I, I swear it by
- 17:10heaven. There was a command in the Old
- 17:15Testament where God's people were specifically told like,
- 17:20hey, whatever promises that you say, listen, God, I, I, I, I
- 17:26promise to God, I swear to God that I'm going to do this.
- 17:30Moses told them, whatever you swear to God, you have to do
- 17:36that or God will judge you. Like if you say God is my
- 17:40witness, you are then held accountable to God.
- 17:43This isn't something you can do flippantly.
- 17:45This is something that actually means something.
- 17:47So then people would find ways to kind of circumvent that.
- 17:51So they would, instead of saying like, oh, I swear by God, I'll
- 17:54have it done by Thursday because then they knew they'd be in
- 17:57condemnation. They would just say, Oh, yeah, I
- 17:59swear by heaven. And then, you know, Friday
- 18:01morning rolls around. They're like, hey, you said this
- 18:03would be done by Thursday, and you promised by God.
- 18:06And they're like, oh, no, no, I promised by heaven.
- 18:09Or they would say like, oh, I swear by the temple.
- 18:13Kind of same thing. It was a way to circumvent being
- 18:16honest and forthright and being held accountable to your
- 18:20actions. It was just finding ways to be
- 18:23dishonest or skirt around it or why you really didn't mean what
- 18:28you said and you actually meant something different.
- 18:30It it's just not being forthright with others.
- 18:33And so here James says the same thing Jesus says in the Sermon
- 18:37on the Mount, which was don't, don't play those games.
- 18:40Just when you say yes, I'm going to have that done by Thursday
- 18:44actually mean I'm going to have it done by Thursday says let
- 18:48your yes mean yes and your no mean no so that you won't fall
- 18:53under judgement. So from the beginning of these
- 18:57verses, we have be patient. Be patient in your circumstances
- 19:01and in your relationships. Don't complain about other
- 19:05believers and be forthright. Be truthful in your
- 19:10communication with other people. Don't kind of hedge.
- 19:14Don't kind of hedge and, and, and make it so that you can
- 19:17have, you know, somewhat plausible deniability at the end
- 19:21of it and be like, oh, I never said that.
- 19:24I actually said this thing that could easily be misconstrued,
- 19:28misconstrued as having said that.
- 19:31Let us be forthright, honest, patient, loving people.
- 19:36And as we do so, we recognize Jesus is coming back and He will
- 19:40reward us for that faithfulness. Thanks for tuning in, have a
- 19:44great day.
