- 0:00Back on the Yukonacky Coaches Show, Bob Joyce, Adam Jordino, Mike Kavanaugh
- 0:03here at Bear Smoke House Barbecue and Hartford. We've got action for you this
- 0:07week. No, not hockey, We've got hoops Tomorrow night the men in
- 0:10North Carolina at the Garden is part of the Jimmy V Classic. Eight thirty
- 0:14for Mike and Wayne from MSG. And then I'll be with dev on Wednesday
- 0:18when the women take on Ball States. That is a battle of the Mules
- 0:21sisters. Nika plays for Yukon, Hannah plays for Ball State. Mom and
- 0:24Dad from Croatia to see their kids play for the first time. Six thirty
- 0:28on the radio for that one from Stores Mike. The line of Joey Muldowney,
- 0:34Ryan Taddle and Tristan Fraser, they got all sorts of confidence in that
- 0:38first game at BC against the Leonard Perrot Smith line, and they have just
- 0:43picked up and gone hell bent for leather. Of the last four games,
- 0:46they've been really good getting after it, particularly on the fore check. Yeah,
- 0:50and the whole thing kind of happened organically because uh, I think there
- 0:54was I think they were out there in the ice a puck and Greg Brown
- 0:59put that line out there against him and they you know, because he's thinking
- 1:04that that was a good matchup for them, and as it turned out,
- 1:07Fraser's line won the drawer and went down and actually had a really good shift
- 1:11against them. So I was like, maybe we'll try this again, so
- 1:15I tried to get it so that Fraser's line went out there again against Smith
- 1:19and they had another good shift. So we wound up playing them against him
- 1:23that night, that Friday night, and that was about halfway through the first
- 1:26period, and that's when the game started to turn for us. Fraser got
- 1:32a goal and we turned that game around. And then the next night we
- 1:37played him against him and they did a commendable job. Again, they were
- 1:42outstanding. So it's hard to do it when you're on the road because the
- 1:46other team gets the final change. But they've been you know, a line
- 1:49that they skate really well, they compete, they work, you know,
- 1:56all three of them just play with tremendous So when you play like that,
- 2:02the one thing that you very rarely give up is odd man rushers because they
- 2:07skate so well that they can catch a lot of people. So and then
- 2:10they four check the tenacious four checkers. So when you're getting turnovers and you're
- 2:15playing in the other you're making the other team play defense. It's hard for
- 2:20them to have the energy to go play offense, and that's what they've been
- 2:22doing really well. Joey Muldowney is a product for the San Jose Sharks.
- 2:27He's a freshman forward from Lakeview and New York hadn't scored yet. Are you
- 2:30sensing any sort of urgency from him in that department or is he just playing
- 2:35well and he's good with what's going on. I hope so. I mean,
- 2:38he's a kid that scored goals, and goal scorers should feel the urgency
- 2:44to score goals. I hope it's not just him, Like there's other guys
- 2:46on the team that you know, the best goal scorers are driven to score
- 2:51goals. They just won't have a nose for the net. They want to
- 2:54shoot pucks. They you know, some people call him selfish. I just
- 2:59I think every good goal scorer is selfish in some way, because you're not
- 3:04going to score if you don't shoot. And I want that, you know,
- 3:07the mentality from our players. So, but he has been doing things
- 3:13really well. Uh five on five and last night, he actually killed a
- 3:15couple of penalties and did a good job. So hopefully, you know,
- 3:20I'm seeing his role expand more in the second half. Chase has really taken
- 3:23off Chase Bradley. And how of the epistol two goals at BC, what
- 3:28he had two against Starteth, I guess was it? Yeah, yeah,
- 3:30I think so. And so it's four in his last like five or six
- 3:32games, and he just seems to have raised his level of playing. And
- 3:37playing with Matthew and Hudson obviously will help that too. But Chase Chase might
- 3:40be when it might be your best all around player. Arguably he certainly our
- 3:45most physical. I think he's actually the most physical player in the country.
- 3:49I saw a stat last week where I think he averages the most hits per
- 3:53game out of anybody in the country. He had a good clean one against
- 3:55Lowell. Oh yeah yeah, even though one he got a penalty on.
- 3:59I don't think a penalty, I think, oh yeah yeah. And the
- 4:05thing I tell our players all the time that you know, will kill penalties
- 4:09at a boarding and charging and hitting too hard, you know those are fine.
- 4:13You know you want to stay away from the slash and the trip and
- 4:15the stick penalties, the lazy hooking penalties. So you can stomach a lot
- 4:20of chases penalties sometimes, you know, like all good tough, physical power
- 4:27forwards, he does take it a little bit too far. And we've been
- 4:29working on that and I think he's he's actually matured in that area as well.
- 4:35But yeah, he brings an element. He's your prototypical power forward.
- 4:41And when he when he's playing well, which is most of the time,
- 4:47there's very rare occasion Chase isn't on his game. It certainly helps our team.
- 4:53When a guy goes into the penalty box and in a situation like you
- 4:57described, where hey, that probably wasn't a penalty that got against you.
- 5:00Players hot in the box for two minutes. When they get back onto the
- 5:03bench, do you do you have a conversation and say, hey, you
- 5:08know, we saw it the way you saw it. Keep going out there,
- 5:11keep playing hard. How did that conversation work? It depends. Sometimes
- 5:15you don't have to I mean, I shouldn't have to have that conversation all
- 5:18the time. Like, penalties are part of the game, They're going to
- 5:20happen. You know, you don't see many teams that you know whin the
- 5:28least penalized team in the in the conference, usually winning conferences. It's that
- 5:33doesn't happen often. It has happened on occasion, but you know, usually
- 5:39the more physical teams are your teams that are pretty successful as well, especially
- 5:44like you look in the NHL playoffs. I mean, they build those teams
- 5:49for physicality because that's how you got to win. Yeah, and I think
- 5:53the same is true in college. So kids are going to get hot sometimes
- 5:59and they think I might be mad at them because they took a penalty,
- 6:01and that's very rarely the case. The only time I get upset is if
- 6:04it's a lazy penalty or a retaliation penalty. Mike, we're through sixteen games
- 6:11or seventeen games of the season, plus one hundred and eight shots on goal.
- 6:15My question is not so much where the shots are coming from on the
- 6:17ice, what about the shots that are actually going on goal. I know
- 6:20you missed team misses the net a decent amount here, but are you okay
- 6:25with the quality of shots that are actually going in on target where they should
- 6:28be or are they going to a lot of them going right at the goalie?
- 6:30And obviously you got to give the goalies some credit to for coming out
- 6:32taking some angles away in this game. Yeah, no, that's a great
- 6:35question. You know. The one thing I think early on in the year,
- 6:39Bob, I think we were taken too many shots just to shoot it
- 6:44on net that really doesn't have a chance to go in like a point shot
- 6:47without a screen, and not many goalies are going to get beat by that.
- 6:50Right, If you're shooting from outside the dots without a guy driving the
- 6:55net, I think you're better off just carrying the puck in lower and looking
- 7:00at you know, curl up and maybe find a late guy. You'll have
- 7:03a better chance of scoring than you will just throw in a muffin from outside
- 7:08the dots just to get a shot on net. Now, if it's a
- 7:10guy driving the net, that's a whole different story. But uh, that's
- 7:14something that you know, I alluded to, you know, I think last
- 7:17week or two weeks ago in our in our weekly call that we're working on
- 7:23our spacing in the offensive zone, and that was one area. But the
- 7:26other thing we're working on is the quality of shots. We want to make
- 7:30sure that when we're putting a pucket to the net that there's either someone driving
- 7:33the net or there's a body at the net Okay good answer, thank you,
- 7:38well, come back with more with calv Later it's Ryan Taddle and Tristan
- 7:41Fraser as the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show continues live from Bears and Hartford. In
- 7:45a moment here on Learfield
