Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Laura McClure: ACT MP on the axing of the Broadcasting Standards Authority
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So BSA has gone government getting rid of it. Social
- 0:03Speaker 1: media taking over traditional media doesn't make sense to have
- 0:05Speaker 1: it anymore. So the plan now is to shift to
- 0:08Speaker 1: a self regulated model. Laura McClure, ACTMP had a member's
- 0:12Speaker 1: bill to get rid of the thing, is doing victory
- 0:14Speaker 1: laps this morning.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Laura, good morning, Hey, good morning, Ryan.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You're happy with this.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh, look, absolutely, it's a huge one for freedom of
- 0:24Speaker 2: speech here in New Zealand. But yeah, it's the BSA
- 0:27Speaker 2: was well and truly outdated and it's time that it went.
- 0:32Speaker 1: What types of things should you not be able to
- 0:35Speaker 1: say on the radio or on a podcast or on
- 0:38Speaker 1: an online streaming show.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, look, I think the point of that question is
- 0:44Speaker 2: that is absolutely up for debate and the BSA the
- 0:49Speaker 2: mechanism of the BSA was to essentially well regulate or
- 0:55Speaker 2: be the regulating body for our mainstream media, and part
- 1:01Speaker 2: of that was up to them to decide, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: uphold complaints. But it doesn't actually cover anything else from
- 1:07Speaker 2: our mainstream media. And we know that young people in
- 1:11Speaker 2: particular are consuming their media everywhere, whether it's online, whether
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's on their social media, so you know, it's look
- 1:18Speaker 2: that is that is up for debate, but I don't
- 1:20Speaker 2: believe the BSA was the right is the right platform
- 1:22Speaker 2: to be able to discuss that.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It's interesting you talk about social media a lot of
- 1:27Speaker 1: young people, that's obviously their main source of news just
- 1:31Speaker 1: of life in general. So isn't the message here really
- 1:34Speaker 1: to parents in particular that you need to school your
- 1:38Speaker 1: your children on how to understand what is right, what
- 1:43Speaker 1: is wrong, and what is fact and what is fiction.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, Look, it's definitely a parent's job. It's definitely
- 1:52Speaker 2: part of our education where young people are online, and
- 1:55Speaker 2: I believe that you know, we need to do We
- 1:57Speaker 2: need to do absolutely, but more when it comes to
- 1:59Speaker 2: teaching our it's about the online environment and you know
- 2:02Speaker 2: how to spot right wrong, disinformation, misinformation because the issue
- 2:07Speaker 2: isn't really with mainstream media, it's with you know, anything
- 2:11Speaker 2: that we can consume online.
- 2:13Speaker 1: That's a wild west out there. Laura, good to have
- 2:15Speaker 1: you on the show. Laura McLure ADMP with us this morning.
