Push that thing... sodium intake for two days. I'm fine with that. Mm-hmm. Right on. Time to go. Let's do it. Shh.
• 0:08
  [upbeat music] Good day.
• 0:25
It's like full spectrum cycling and whatnot. This is number 226. Yeah, now finally the tech room. Yeah. Uh, teacher advisor contact- And two through 224... Ms- yes, Mr.
• 0:39
Peniston This is, this is awesome 'cause it's three weeks worth of material.
• 0:42
And he, yeah, and he would point at me with his two fingers left because he got it, his hand caught in whatever serpentine belt type thing of a car at some point when... I don't know. [laughs] Yeah.
• 0:54
I like, I like my digits. I like my digits. Yeah. And if I lost them I wouldn't keep trying to gesture with that hand. I would kinda alternate hands. I don't know. That's just- Like Bob Dole with his... 'Cause he- Yeah.
• 1:07
I'm Bob Dole. Yeah. But he had the pencil in there. And Mrs. Minch- He's like, but he had the thumb... Mrs. Minch did the same thing.
• 1:12
It, they, I don't know if they were o- just owning it and just getting on you like, "Rah, rah, rah, rah." I think the pencil was in, the thumb was in the other hand. He could do the thumb. I, uh- Bob Dole...
• 1:24
when I, when I, uh- Bob Dole loves this show... Bob Dole. He's dead. I, he, I used to hang out in his, uh, area of Kansas quite regularly. Ah. When I- The largest rural water district in the country oddly enough. Sure.
• 1:37
That's probably us now. Can you say pork? [laughs] Right. [laughs] He did well for his, uh, little piece of desert out there in Kansas, for sure. Yeah.
• 1:47
I, uh, I played clarinet as a kid and brought my clarinet in to the teacher and he looked at me, he's like, "What the hell's going on with this thing?" I'm like, "What? It's my uncle's clarinet."
• 1:56
He's like, "Does your uncle have all his fingers?" I'm like, "I don't know. I better ask my mom" [laughs] And he did not. [laughs] And- Oh, nice...
• 2:04
some of the holes were capped because he was missing fingers from being a, a meat packer, and he could still keep playing the clarinet.
• 2:09
The guy thought it was the cool- he's like, "This is the coolest way to learn how to play clarinet ever" Just put some pork in that hole You just, they brazed right over the top of the metal, the steel.
• 2:16
I mean the- Oh, wow... the fitting, it was still- silver. And you just tapped it and it closed the hole and it made a great sound. I sounded really good- Tap that hole... even though I sucked.
• 2:25
[laughs] Never had quality- A quality, a quality instrument will sound, you know, decent every once in a while even with a hack handler on it. Right. Absolutely. And vice versa too.
• 2:34
A shitty instrument can make a, professional can make sound great. That's true. I can't do either one of those. Me neither.
• 2:40
[laughs] Hey, I'm looking at some c- [laughs] I'm looking at the screen with the, the green waveform on and I'm like, "Eh" Whoa, did I hit po- did I hit record? I did hit record. Okay. Oddly enough. Cool.
• 2:51
Push the button. Push that button too. Now- Hey... you got it all going... redundancy. They're red. That means- Yeah, red, stop... stop. Wait, no, it means go.
• 2:57
Wait, I'm not wearing a W- oh, I'm wearing the anti-shirt today on accident. Damn it. [laughs] Yeah, so I- Oh... you know how- I fail... you're in the dentist chair... we donate- That's, that's that dentist-... to MSC.
• 3:09
Wendy- I'm d-... Wendy's the one that donates to Radio Milwaukee. Um, I- So we've got them covered. I also donate. Yeah, I don't, but that's not because I don't want to, it's 'cause Wendy already does. Listen.
• 3:19
There've been r- there have been Radio Milwaukee studio sessions all week this week. Yeah. Yeah. I, uh- I almost was gonna go, but I didn't. [laughs] But it's good. All right, speaking of places people didn't go. Hmm.
• 3:30
Oh, God, you're gonna give me shit? bike- Hell yeah... toberfest. Hmm. I do realize I missed a really fun event. I looked at the pictures, I felt bad, and then I got over it and had a beer. I would say,
• 3:41
so it started out at Blackbird, and like pretty much we did like at least half if not three quarters of the actual miles before the first stop. Sure.
• 3:51
It seemed like that was pretty, it was probably half of it, which was cool- Yeah... because made the first stop and then the subsequent ones were like a mile and a half, two miles apart. If that. Yeah. Yeah.
• 4:02
And I don't think, except for Blackbird, that I've been to any of those other s- places- Nope, I have not... before. Cool. Um, they were good stops. Um, and the last stop where the party was was badass.
• 4:19
[laughs] Yeah, Bad Moon, Bad Moon Saloon. Yeah. Oh, we've been there once though, weren't we? I- We did that once on a- I, well I cert-... I think... I have not been there. I don't think I've been there. Okay.
• 4:27
If I have I didn't recall the name of it. Yeah, they had, they had a, like a drag show and they, the, and the gr- Costume contest and- They make grasshoppers there. You know the drink? Oh, yeah. Nice.
• 4:36
Yeah, I hadn't had one of those in years and I'm like- Oh, that was at-... "Oh, that looks good. It's green"... that was- "Let me have one." [laughs] That was Joe K's Ranch. Oh, that was the last one, wasn't it? No.
• 4:44
That was Joe K's Ranch. That was a good one though. That's where- That was the one where the, uh, the bar had the, the seats- Oh, that wasn't where the costume part... bolted to the bar I'm getting- Ooh... like a diner.
• 4:55
It was- Am, am I mixing up two places into one? Yep. Right on. Yeah. So yeah, so they had- So you had a good time... so that's how that night went. [laughs] You said it was a chilly ride home?
• 5:05
Uh, we got rained on for, I don't know, a half hour or something, and it wasn't like- Yeah... misty, it was raining. Yeah, it was between Joe K's and Porky's on Squire in the cuddehe. Wow, you guys did a lot of riding.
• 5:17
We were s- Yeah... we were, we weren't quite south of the airport, but we were like level with the airport- Yeah, yeah... for sure. It was- Past, we went past Layton, so you know. It was a- That's, that's a trek...
• 5:27
but the real long part was just getting to Blackbird.
• 5:30
That was like- Yeah, 'cause there was like- It was like a third, a third, a third, a third to get down there, a third to do the ride, a third to come back again the other way. Yeah.
• 5:37
So it was, M- Michael said it was a marathon length. I think that's- Yeah... I think I had 28 maybe or something. Yeah.
• 5:42
But it's pretty much marar- marathon, which oddly enough- When you're doing a 20 night bar hop, that's, that's a lot of miles...
• 5:48
well, I was just thinking about my, my, uh, niece doing the Chicago Marathon a couple weeks ago. That's why the marathon was in my head- And then I was like-... and then I was like, "Well, that's"... "Did this time it?"
• 5:55
But my, it, it, so my timing gizmo on my watch, 'cause it was on for a long time just walking around, and I don't just turn it off 'cause I'll forget to turn it on. Whatever.
• 6:05
But it died at like 12:30 while we were at, um-... the palapa on the way home. [laughs] Mm. And so I don't know the entire time, but it would've been two and a half hours for the thing, which is...
• 6:18
And she did it in four, running. Four, well, 4:12, but whatever. [laughs] I'm like, damn, that's fast. You know? That's, that's cruising on feet. Right, for somebody running. Where- Run, running, running from cops.
• 6:31
[laughs] That's how you get, that's how you get that training. Is that right? Just running from cops. Yeah. [laughs] Fortunately, I've never ran from cops. I don't, no- Actually, that's not true... that's a good idea.
• 6:39
I did, once as a kid. Yeah. Kids are stupid. 'Cause we were- Kids are stupid... we had a barrel and, you know, the cops showed up and we were underage. They didn't show up at all your parties? They showed up at a few.
• 6:49
Yeah, that's- We're country kids, man... better run. Get out of that ravine, you stupid kids- All right... down there in [laughs] Lake Park. Uh, Wolski's. So according to this- What?...
• 6:58
it was three hours and 27 minutes on Steed on Saturday. Oh, okay. Right on. Not sure who... Yeah. I don't know. Seems like you should- Yeah... you should've gone farther faster. [laughs] Well, yeah.
• 7:09
Well, we could, I guess. 'Cause the, the actual ride part was, a lot of parts were kinda slow 'cause it was- Oh, yeah... through some alleys. Uh, we... It's, it was cool.
• 7:17
Again, uh, all spots I d- I don't really know down there on that side of town. Yep. That's what Billy's good for. Yep, throwing you in the rock pile- Did I, uh-... it's like, "Da, da, da, which way?"
• 7:25
Just tell me which way is north. Did I see Mr. Four Eyes, Faux Eyes with some makeup on? [laughs] Yeah. I should do him in a pic- Was he doing a Monty Python- I should do him in a picture somewhere...
• 7:35
Rocky Horror Picture Show thing? Oh. Oh. Robert Smith. Yeah. Oh, he was a perfect Bob Smith. Big Bob Smith. It was working out perfect. Oh, now that you've said that, I totally see it. [laughs] That's awesome.
• 7:52
That's, that's- Whoa. Sorry... I'm gonna go back and look at that picture again because that is so Bob Smith. [laughs] Where the hell did my doctor go? Yeah, he's, well, he's looking at his phone over there.
• 8:02
So- There, that's better... uh, other thing we could recap real quick is Wolski's- Yeah... 115th birthday party. Sunday? It was. Yeah. It has already been. Yep, yep.
• 8:12
And they are apparently the sixth oldest bar in Milwaukee. Interesting. The reason I... Well, we went- [laughs]... 'cause it was a good party, and they had The Hosts, was a pretty cool band that played there. Yeah.
• 8:23
Did, were you there for that? Part of it. 'Cause I was looking- A little bit... for you. I'm like, "Where the hell is Mike?" 'Cause it was like... Yeah, I was there for Thrift Tones. Oh, yeah.
• 8:32
And then I stepped away for a little bit just to get away from everybody. Copy. The people. And then I was like, "Yeah, I'll come back for Hosts."
• 8:40
And I did for a little bit and, but it was, the, the marathon was [laughs] affecting me, and I'm like- Oh... I kinda- Night prior, yeah. [laughs] I kinda, I kinda wanna just, uh, go home and lay down now.
• 8:52
[laughs] Awesome. Sausage and logs. I, I must have just missed you because that's a... I got down there when The Hosts were just getting going. Okay.
• 8:59
And I, or I didn't know they were up there 'cause it w- they were kinda at the top of the hill and- Yeah. This is- That's all redone and nicified. I know. And they still put- Oh, the park areas or- No, the- Oh, the-...
• 9:10
the, uh, Collin, [laughs] Eric Collin's launch ramp. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, I'll have to go by and see it. It's all right on. Hey, I know we've talked about the Milverine before. We love the Milverine.
• 9:23
Uh, JK has pictures of the Milverine. John. Uh, there's a thing. How I learned to stop worrying- Like, there's a link in the show notes from TMJ doing a thing about him, which is pretty good.
• 9:31
I was like, "Yeah, that's cool." [laughs] Talking to him and the, and the reporter takes his shirt off and stuff, and they do f- fisticuffs and whatnot and- Oh, that's awesome. We gotta have a link to that- Kinda fun...
• 9:41
in the show notes. It's in the show notes, and it's the Milverine, and somehow, I dunno, he's been doing this for an awful long time. He's finally got his 15 minutes or more from- Oh, yeah. He's squeezing it out.
• 9:51
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Good stuff. Big time. Getting a, you know- He's a-... throw the first pitch out for shit's sake. Yeah. I don't know. Right? [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] I mean, that's- What do I have to do to do that?
• 9:58
Yeah, that's like- I'll tie both my shoes correctly in the morning? [laughs] No. No doubt. That was a good one, yeah. Yeah, that's like having, like, Bijou going out there- It was right after our podcast...
• 10:06
throwing, you know, like, "Hey, you're Milwaukeean of the Year. Hey, da, da, da, da." Oh. Yeah, I- Who, who's next, Art Kumbalek? [laughs] Funny you should say that. I think Brian Ritchie and the Nobs.
• 10:15
I have, I have a, I have a vote in. He, the guy hasn't lived here for 30 years. He does not get to be an honor... Well, he could be an honorary Milwaukeean now. Oh, Ritchie? [laughs] Yeah, he doesn't live here. Yeah.
• 10:26
Yeah, he doesn't live here. Doesn't count. [laughs] Does he even live in the United States? Uh, no, not normally. I think he lives in- Tas-... New Zealand. Ta- yeah, yeah... Tasmaniaville.
• 10:35
I know 'cause he rides a, uh, bamboo bicycle. Nob. Bamboo bicycles are dumb. [laughs] The guy, the guy out in California. I'm sorry. They're not. They are. They're inconsistent. I mean, the idea is good.
• 10:47
But if you're trying to get- [laughs]... performance out of the thing, like, the Booft fat bikes were kind of all right because the frame doesn't have to be super repeatable. It just has to be strong and done.
• 10:58
So you, you don't have to tune it to do stuff like a road bike or something. But yeah, otherwise bamboo bikes are stupid. No, carbon bikes are stupid. Bamboo bikes are fine. All right, you know what's not stupid?
• 11:11
Titanium [laughs] bikes. Titanium bikes are not stupid. They're just expensive. Well- They're stupid expensive... I was noticing today that there are... Oh. Oh.
• 11:20
I gotta figure out how this works 'cause we're doing this differently. Uh-oh. My phone's, like, flashing and shit. I'm high and stuff. Hi. How are you? Oh, the... [laughs] It worked. Hey, everybody. Okay. Hey.
• 11:30
Wait, let's do this again. Hey, uh, welcome to the program, caller. Who do we [laughs] have on the line? Hi. Hi, everybody. This is Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. How are you guys doing today? Doing great, Mark.
• 11:40
How are you? Doesn't he sound fantastic? Very good. Mark always sounds great.
• 11:43
Well, I know, but we're doing this, and that's why the beginning was kinda weird because we're not doing it through the normal call screener line.
• 11:50
We're just doing it through the phone, which I think is- Making it happen... probably taking the middleman out makes it better. It might. Yes.
• 11:56
Only thing about that call screener line is more than one person could call in- Mm... and kinda listen and, and we could bring people in. It was, it was very useful when we had a popular show.
• 12:05
[laughs] When did we have a popular show? I'm not saying you were on it. Oh, okay. Well, that's good. [laughs] Maybe once or twice. All right, Mark, how's it going? Fantastic, man. It is beautiful weather out here.
• 12:18
What's it doing out there? Uh, it's, uh, today was in the mid-60s- 61... or, or low 60s. Nice. Nice Good stuff, good stuff. Yep. I think we're- Per- perfect riding weather, man... yeah, we're in the fall.
• 12:29
I- if it stayed like this for another two months, that would be sweet. [laughs] Yep. Absolutely.
• 12:35
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, you know, being the climate change denier or anything or trying to enable or anything, but, God, sometimes [laughs] when it's all shitty- Agreed... it's, I'm selfishly enjoying it.
• 12:49
[laughs] Oh, oh, you mean- Now I'm going to hell. [laughs] Yeah, you... Oh, you mean- Or I'm going to Grun- to Grunberg Hell... right here, it doesn't really affect us yet. No, we have the high ground.
• 12:59
We're like Anakin Skywalker or Obi-Wan. There was a, I think... Did we talk about this last week?
• 13:02
There was a thing in, uh, one of the things that has some stuff in it, was a, uh, survey of the best places to live when cl- when climate change really starts kicking our ass.
• 13:12
We're in, like, the, the, the 99th percentile of where you wanna be. I would say Mark's not that far off of it probably, unless that lake evaporates where you're at. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I hope so. [laughs] It's the plan.
• 13:26
Yeah. Right on. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, right on. Right on. So I saw that you guys did some events recently, uh, a couple bike rides or gathering rides. Tell me about that stuff. What did you guys go do?
• 13:36
Yeah, we kind of recapped it a little bit, but Biketober Fest is, uh, uh, it's probably the 11th, 12th, uh, 27th year. I don't know. It's been going on for quite a while. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And, and- It looks like fun...
• 13:47
yeah, and it is a, uh, you don't know where you're going until you leave the stop you're at because the- And even then you don't know... the, the... Yeah, you're not really sure.
• 13:56
You just have to follow the guy that's leading the ride, which makes it- Oh, wow... really interesting. Yeah. So it was a, it was a good time. The, the... Yeah. It sounds fun.
• 14:03
Regardless of how people try to razz, you know, it's like [laughs]... [laughs] It's like, "Come on, man." "Hey, tell me... Hey, okay, just let me know where we're going." "Yeah, you'll find out when we get there."
• 14:13
It's like, "Oh, no, but I really want- [laughs]... I need to know where we're going." "Yeah, you will find out- You'll find out when-... when we get there." [laughs] When I pull up and stop. [laughs] It's like- Yeah...
• 14:21
bless your fricking heart, bro. And it, it's through an area of town that we don't frequent, so it was great I thought. Awesome. Awesome.
• 14:27
I saw some of the pictures, and it just looked like you guys were having a great time, and I knew you guys had done it for a while. I just, uh, wanted to hear a little bit more about it. Thank you. Yeah, right.
• 14:36
Listen to the beginning of the show. You'll [laughs] get an earful. [laughs] There we go. There we go. Um, when you...
• 14:42
As you were calling in, we were talking about kind of, I, I think there's a proliferation of, uh, titanium fat bikes this year. I know there's always been a few out there.
• 14:53
There's, you know, Black Sheep, and there's custom guys and Ti Cycles. But it just seems like- Yeah, man...
• 14:58
there's several more that have just, obviously because they're going into fat bike season, but popped up, and I was just, like, thinking to myself- Myself... you know, is this, is this, like, is this just...
• 15:09
There aren't a lot of other material fat bikes out there anymore. There's not that many steel ones. There's... There are a couple carbon ones but not many. But it's, like, all these titanium ones now.
• 15:19
[laughs] And, and then I piggybacked on that, the fact that it seems like electric bikes are all moving towards cargo electric bikes. Which- Which I'm all for... that's where that makes sense. You know, it really does.
• 15:31
And, and to be fair, I think- Agreed... I think it makes sense for most fat bikes to be titanium because everyone knows carbon sucks, especially in the cold- Right... and whatever, and if it's gonna...
• 15:42
If y- I think most people that are riding fat bikes today are diehards. It... We're not letting that fad go without a fight, you know? It's like, but as, as you- It's true. I rode one today...
• 15:53
as you have been riding years and years, you kinda just keep bumping your...
• 15:57
Maybe you bump your level up a little bit, and getting a Ti frame just seems smart because as, uh, components change, the frame doesn't go away, so you can just keep retrofitting it until you die.
• 16:09
I have a- A for- forever frame. I have a- Absolutely... segue into fat bikes oddly enough. Go, Tony. So yesterday we had a, um, a breakfast or a lunch at Daniel's school, and we got seated with Daniel and his,
• 16:27
I'll just say it, possibly autistic friend at school. And for those of you that don't know, since you've never listened to me, Daniel's autistic. Um, the guy starts talking to me, and he's like... We start...
• 16:40
We, we digress from Scardina's- Mm-hmm... to the River West 24, and the guy's like, "So you got one of those fat bikes?" [laughs] And I'm like- [laughs]... "Actually, I got a couple of them." He's like,
• 16:53
"Do you by chance know Colin Ford?" Yeah. [laughs] And I'm like, "Whoa, talk about a blast from the past." I'm like, "As a matter of fact, he's been on my River West 24 team." And I'm like, "How do you know Colin?"
• 17:04
And this is where I start to feel really old. He's like, "We went to school together." I'm like, "Oh, great. You went to school with Colin, and we both have children the same age.
• 17:13
I did not go to school with Colin considering I'm, like, twice his age." [laughs] Which is readily entertaining in itself. Was that fat bike related? [laughs] It was because he said...
• 17:24
I says, "As a matter of fact, Colin just sold his fat bike- Right on... to our friend Dave Lunz, um, because they're both obsessed with green bikes for some fucking reason." Whom I saw today at lunch. Did you, now?
• 17:35
Where'd you guys have lunch? Period. [laughs] Studs. Nice. Studs. So I got a, I got a question for you guys about fat bikes and the fat bike, uh, trends right now.
• 17:43
Are you seeing any reduction in price overall in the fat bike genre? Not on the Ti frames. [laughs] Well, obviously not on Ti, but- So, um, yeah, you know, I don't... Well, I...
• 17:55
So many people have stopped making them, you know? It's like there aren't that many left. I think a lot of what's getting sold is, like, two or three-year-old stock, you know? Yeah. Sure. Sure.
• 18:07
Um, including from some of the biggest names in fat biking, fat biking, fat biking. Yeah. Not, Notsarly though. Um- [laughs]... yeah, so I d- I...
• 18:17
To be fair, I have not been keeping my hand up or finger or toe on the pulse- As of late with the moving and the bullshittery, but it's just, we're getting into fat bike.
• 18:28
I've been, I'm still on motorcycle season, and I just got my motorcycle running for the first time- Oh, nice... yesterday. What bike do you have? Oh, I g- uh, the one I just got running is an SV650 Suzuki. Oh, fun, man.
• 18:41
Oh, yeah. It's fun. I'm gonna sell it. [laughs] Not now, not now, though, 'cause guess what the worst time of year to sell a motorcycle is? Right now. Today- Yeah... is probably th- Yeah... it's probably the worst day.
• 18:52
Yep. Yep. Uh- Yeah... a- and as soon as you get past Christmas, oddly enough, people start thinking already it might be getting warmer pretty soon, so I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. I might, I might let her go.
• 19:01
But, uh, I'm having fun now, so. Now, that being said, I do see a lot more, quite frankly, cheap Chinese fat, electric fat bikes coming out. Yeah. Lots of cheap fat bikes. Yeah. Cheap, cheap E-fat bikes indeed.
• 19:14
Yeah, and you get what you pay for, cheap. You... Absolutely. Absolutely. And we have to deal with some of those, uh, products, and it, it is just a nightmare. I mean- I bet...
• 19:23
you, you barely over-tighten some- trying to torque it to spec, and it strips out. Ugh. Well, and you got unsafe battery potential and yeah. Oh, don't even touch- Oh, yeah... them. Don't even touch them.
• 19:34
Your insurance- Oh, yeah... will kill you. Uh, so at Pronghorn, Mark, w- do you guys do any boutique, quote, unquote, "boutique brands" of fat bikes? Or are you more in the mainstream of, uh, whomever is currently
• 19:47
paying the Chinese enough to make them? What was that, Craig? No, I said- Oh, oh wait. Oh, shit. Sorry, before we get into that- Oh... apparently we have a- Top Hill? We, we have to- Oh, water...
• 19:56
we have to stop for the top of the hill, mostly 'cause I just cracked this thing open. Uh- Sweet... so I... You know what? What are you guys drinking today? That's a good question.
• 20:05
I can't see the label [laughs] 'cause I- Oh, I just put mine away... I stuffed it in the cooler. [laughs] All right. So what had, so what had happened was, um, this is Lakefront's Agave Sun, Blue Agave Ale, which- Mm...
• 20:17
we had, I had first at the WMSC- Me as well... back, big backyard, blah, blah, blah.
• 20:22
But I got this particular 12-pack from Jake Newborn at the Bike Fed because I went down and swapped his throttle out on his e-bike so he could make sure that- He could use it...
• 20:31
which, which was a, a th- a faulty throttle, so. Interesting. Um, at least so far. And he's got a CYC motor. I don't know, Mark, if you're familiar with the CYCs. The guy that's- I'm not...
• 20:41
the guy that's the biggest, um, importer of them, I think, in the United States is in, I think he, uh, he might even be in Ogden, but he's somewhere out there. Might be Draper or somewhere.
• 20:50
Um, the company is called Electrify Bike. Mm. They're- And they, and they do have a retail location, but they are also a wholesaler for Bafang and, and, uh, CYC. And this- C- CYC's insane. Well, we, we carry Bafang.
• 21:04
It's a nice motor, but so far it's been a little bit on the, shall we say, unreliable side. Mm. Okay. That's where Bafang shines. Yeah, 'cause they've been around forever. Yeah. Yeah.
• 21:16
Yeah, so you know, uh- Yeah, we, we sell a lot of the cheap, uh, E-fat bikes, but the only, uh, uh, fat bike that we are carrying currently is the Wendigo. Okay. Um, I think it's the Fu- the Fuji Wendigo. Yeah, Fuji.
• 21:28
And it, it's, it's like a, a $1,000 fat bike. It's kind of... I mean, it's a decent bike. Like, it would be a great bike for anybody that isn't crazy serious about it. Right.
• 21:39
If they're just into it sorta, it'd be perfect. Right on. Hey, we... So I know that we were, I f- we forgot to say what this beer's all about, besides that we've had it a couple times before.
• 21:50
[laughs] Oh, yeah, it's- And how, and how we came by it. I, it- Yeah... the first one I had, I was like, "Eh." Yeah, I was the same way. 'Cause it's kinda citrusy, and it's...
• 21:59
But it, it's one of those, it, like in the summer it would be really great because it's light. Mm. And, uh, but as I drank a couple of them, I'm like- I-... "It's really not that bad. I kinda like that"...
• 22:07
started to really enjoy them, too. It's like rolling rock. Right? I don't really like it, but I'll drink it 'cause it's around. And then after three, they're pretty good. Right? You know? Exactly.
• 22:14
[laughs] But these are actually, I would never, ever at a grocery store looking at a front, a selection of beer would pick this out. And then I had it with you at, at the- [laughs]...
• 22:23
backyard barbecue, and I'm like, "You know, this is a pretty nice beer." Did you see the pic- Yes... did you see the picture from Walskis Fest of, uh, Lloyd with Jim and, uh, Russ Klisch? No. Ah. [laughs] And Sean.
• 22:35
Well, I was stand- I was talking- And, and your neighbor Sean. So I was talking to- Oh, God, no. Oh, yeah, yeah. Someone send me this ugly thing.
• 22:41
[laughs] No, I gotta send you this hideous picture 'cause he's giving me shit about my hair, and he hasn't washed his hair in how long? Give me, give me a break over here, bro.
• 22:47
[laughs] But anyway, so Russ- Like twice a year... so Russ and, um, Jim Klisch own Lakefront Brewery. And I was having... Yeah. Russ no longer own... Oh, wait. He may have sold. Yeah. One of them- Jim probably...
• 22:59
Jim owns it. Well, either way. Oh, wait. Yeah, anyway, go on. Whatever. It's been going for 30 years.
• 23:03
So I'm talking to Jim about how 33 years ago Marcus and I refinished his floors on his house in, uh, uh, in River West, and he's like, "I remember that. You guys helped me get a lot more money for the house."
• 23:16
[laughs] I'm like, "Sweet." Awesome. "Can I have part of the company now, please?" Yeah, right? [laughs] Where's your cut? Yeah, right? Because, uh, I feel like somehow I'm not owed it, but maybe. I don't know. Yeah.
• 23:29
All right. There's vicious rumor that, and this is just rumor, that, that Lakefront's for sale. You... The vicious rumors keep coming from you. You mention it all the time. Good God. What's Lakefront?
• 23:40
What is this picture? [laughs] Where... Are you guys- No, what's Lakefront? Lakefront is this brewery we're talking about. They're, uh- Yeah, Lakefront Brewery?
• 23:47
They're, they're, they're- That's their entire, that's their entire operation? Yeah, they're like the oldest, well, one of the oldest, uh, micro brews in- They're not micro. What? Now they- They're regional.
• 23:56
Yeah, but they were micro when they started. Right. That's true. So they never don't get micro. Don't get micro on me- Over, over 25,000 barrels a year... Italian. You want a fresh one? I don't know what that means.
• 24:06
Is that a lot? Makes you, makes you regional. Is that a lot? That's a lot. That's a lot. Don't sound like a lot. 25,000 barrels? Yeah. That's when you go from micro to regional. What about macro? Mm.
• 24:16
When do you get to macro? Macro is when you're dumb. Um, you got... Yeah. [laughs] You brew shitty beer. Mark, what are you drinking?
• 24:23
I am, uh, drinking basically a no-name, it's called Pub Beer Locker, uh, or Lager, and it's, uh, cheap fun. It's a pure white can with black lettering and no marketing on it. Nice. [laughs] So it's generic, I love it.
• 24:38
Like the old, old-timey ones- Right... that just said beer. Beer. Yeah. [laughs] Neko Man. And well, and it tastes, it tastes just like PBR. [laughs] All right. That's fair enough.
• 24:48
I, I remember something I wanted to ask Mark about. Well, ask him. Okay. In fact, I got a question for you. So you- Okay... uh, 'cause we follow you on the interwebs, on the old- Ooh... Facebook, you know. Awesome...
• 24:58
uh, I saw you're, you're working on something for the seat of your bike. Yes. A hand- Yes... is it stitched leather something something? Is it leather? Yes, sir. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 25:07
In fact, uh, w- well, um, I think I told you guys I was building a springer banana seat for my bike. Yes.
• 25:12
And, um, um, getting ready to assemble that, and I've got a new, uh, banana seat pan that is longer than the one I am currently running, and has more of a curve, so it'll be much nicer, and it is solid steel, so i- I can weld to it and stuff.
• 25:28
And so I'm going to build up my own padding on it using a very dense, harder, uh, uh, foam rubber-type stuff, and then that'll get sanded down and shaped to the perfect shape, and then it'll get covered with two or three more layers of progressively softer foam that gets thinner and thinner.
• 25:44
Now, with the leather, in doing my experiment that I did last night at 2:00 in the morning like an idiot- [laughs] Hallelujah...
• 25:52
um, I learned, I learned when you perforate leather like, like what you see in the picture, it becomes just a tear zone. It, it's gonna, it's gonna come apart right there.
• 26:00
So I've learned that when I do the actual product, I'm gonna, uh, like laminate some fabric onto the backside of the leather, and then laminate some fabric onto the foam that I'm putting on there, and then when I stitch through, it gives me this bubble appearance, like a, a poofing out of the leather.
• 26:17
A poofing. A poofing. That sounds like you're kinda almost tucking and rolling it. Poofing. Well, yeah, yeah.
• 26:23
And what I wanted to do it with my sewing machine, 'cause I have sewing machines that'll go right through this leather, but they were not doing the right thing with the foam. It wasn't acting right.
• 26:34
So I'm having to hand-sew it, so that's gonna be quite a challenge. Right on. Yeah, that seat sounds awesome. I, I, I like your, uh, your f- your foam layering technique, and, uh, where'd the pan- Yeah... come from?
• 26:46
Is that, is that something you had made, or did you get it from Alibaba? No, no. It actually, uh, uh, came along the way of how bicycle things just fall into my ownership.
• 26:56
Uh, I have no idea where it came from, it just appeared here. [laughs] You're like a bike magnet. [laughs] You have no idea.
• 27:06
[laughs] And, and it used to be a good thing, and then it became kind of a bad thing, and I was... What I didn't get to tell you guys about, or talk about last time, was that I sold four of my bikes. Whoa.
• 27:19
I'm, I'm, I'm not a guy that sells bikes, right? And so I, I chose to sell these bikes so I could get an ablation procedure. They're getting hu- hung up in the rafters, and I got decent money for them.
• 27:30
But that got me thinking, because I ended up stacking all of my bikes out on my back fence the other day, and there were 33 of them, and it almost took up the entire length of my backyard, and I realized I have a problem.
• 27:43
[laughs] A- as soon as it makes that turn into the L, you're, you're sunk. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. [laughs] So I've, I've made the commitment to sell 20 of them.
• 27:51
So if any of you guys know anybody or personally wants to acquire one of my bikes as art, you can get it at a low, low price.
• 28:00
So is that something that you have online somewhere, or do you just have a picture of them numbered 1 to 33 and say, "I'm looking... Let, let's auction off number f- seven today"? I like the way you think, man.
• 28:12
I think I will put together something along the lines of number one, two, three, four, and then get them up in a location where people can refer to them quickly.
• 28:20
Um, this is stuff that I've just been kind of digesting emotionally, and I haven't taken a whole lot of moves in any kind of physical way other than, like, a couple posts that I've put up.
• 28:29
But I'm excited for it, because even though I'm letting go of them, I, I... There's so much room for activities when they're gone, and- [laughs] Right, and more bikes.
• 28:39
[laughs] And that's the point, is I have become addicted to this new customization on the e-bike thing, and I wanna do some expensive things, and I can't do them without money.
• 28:50
Right, and that's where Snoop Dogg- Usually how it works... that's where Snoop Dogg comes in. Hell yeah. [laughs] I like the idea. I think that's...
• 28:59
You're headed in the same direction that we are here with Everyday Cycles, is that we're, we're doing custom stuff. We're not just selling a bike, 'cause I can't anymore.
• 29:10
For one, QBP won't sell to me temporarily, so- Why? 'Cause I owe 'em money. No, [laughs] it's true. Oh. [laughs] Um, but even if I... Well, when I get 'em, I'll get 'em paid off. Don't worry, guys, I'm good on that.
• 29:22
Um- [laughs]... the, the way that we are structured with the business and the location, they're like, "Well, I don't know if you're a real bike sh- kinda like a guy with a garage."
• 29:31
I'm like, "Does a guy have s- 40 bikes in there- [laughs]... and, you know, 3,500 square feet? No, he doesn't. This is a legit business." Yeah. I pay rent outside my house. Give me, give me my shit, bro. Shit. Yeah.
• 29:43
Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. But anyway, so in lieu of all that, yes, finding interesting stuff that has seen partial life and not totally gone, used wise, would be awesome. Yeah.
• 29:55
Yeah, well, and this, in fact, segues into this next kinda area that I wanted to talk to you guys about, and that's, a- and it ties into our earlier conversation about cheap [audio distorts] e-fat bikes.
• 30:07
Um, I am trying to think about what the e-bike industry is gonna look like in three or four years from now when the bikes that we sold last year come back to us. Yeah.
• 30:17
And when problems start arising and things start changing and breaking down and wearing out, I, I really wonder what that's gonna look like, what companies are gonna stand behind their products, how we're gonna deal with it, or whether it won't be any big deal at all and people will just buy new batteries and go on with their happy lives.
• 30:34
U-G-L-Y. It's gonna be ugly. It's gonna be ugly. That's one way to do it. I'm telling you right now.
• 30:40
[laughs] Yeah, I, I think- If Tony was watching me do that, I was like, "I'm just saying U-G-L-Y," 'cause I was bopping around [laughs] over here...
• 30:46
I, I think you are gonna get people that feel that they paid 1,000 or $1,500 for a generic e-bike, who when you tell them they need a new battery and it's 500 bucks, they're gonna just be like, "What the actual hell?"
• 31:01
Education- Yeah... is not- But, yeah... just for children, people. Right. I mean, it, there are definitely people that buy these having no knowledge of how to properly maintain them. Um- That's your internet at work...
• 31:12
I mean, it really is. And, and I do, I mean, they're lithium ion batteries. They take so many charges and they lo- no longer work.
• 31:21
And if they're generic cells, 18650s, whatever, one of them dies and the whole pack is gone. Yep. Yep. And, and that, that's- Do you think the Babymaker people tell the folks about this, you know?
• 31:33
No, I'm definitely guaranteeing you that FXT or FTX, whatever the fuck those Babymaker people are called, but everyone's making a Babymaker now. They just call it something else better than Babymaker.
• 31:46
But they all have that down tube battery, you know, a wide aluminum down tube that they can throw a, I don't know, 10 amp hour battery in. It's the dumbest idea I've ever seen. It's not gonna get better.
• 31:58
[laughs] "Oh, it's stealth." I'm like, "You're riding an electric bike, man. I mean, you don't need to be stealth."
• 32:06
Well, and to go to what you said a second ago, I, I truly believe that probably 90% of the people, and I'm kinda going out on a limb here, that 90% of the people that buy e-bikes don't have a fucking clue about bikes in general at all.
• 32:21
Uh, 85 to 90 I'll give you. And, and I would also go as far as saying that n- 85, 90% of that 85, 90% that you're talking about don't even ride their bikes ever. They just put them in the garage. Right, right.
• 32:32
They ride them home and never- "Oh, that's gonna be great for me," and then they never use it. So your actual amount of people that probably ride them regularly is 15 to 20%. Yeah.
• 32:41
Well- So on that, on that aspect, you may not see that many bikes coming back to the shop because [laughs] no one uses them. They're all in garages, burning them down in Indonesia somewhere. Right.
• 32:51
It, that may be the truth of it. Who knows? I'm kinda curious as to what we're gonna see. It's gonna be interesting. It's, it's gonna be an interesting couple of years, for sure.
• 32:58
[laughs] Except for Schwinn in the old days, when everybody had a Schwinn. I think if every bike company out there, if people actually used every bike that the bike company sells
• 33:10
for a reasonable amount every year, 100 days a year they're riding their bike or whatever, they would have return rates that would blow your mind. [laughs] Yeah. But they know that.
• 33:17
The marketing, the auditors, they've all done that math. They know it's not gonna happen. It's a big secret, folks. Shh. Yeah. I mean, how many bikes- Well-...
• 33:25
in the United States especially are brought home, rode a couple of times, hung in the garage, left to sit? Sold to a college student. At least 50%. Sold to a- Yeah. Yeah. That's, and that's on the low side, I agree.
• 33:37
Most definitely. I will say there's a kid on campus that has an absolutely spectacular Rockhopper that is clearly his dad's. [laughs] Who did exact, that thing. He rode it a couple of times, hung it in his garage.
• 33:51
His kid went to college. He's like, "I got the perfect bike for you." Don't care if it gets stolen anymore. It is, it is absolutely- But yeah, those are bad-ass bikes... immaculate, like never-ridden condition.
• 34:00
I've, I've seen a handful of them. I'm kinda wanting to like put a note on them like, "Hey, you know, your, your dad gave you this bike. Why don't you sell it to me for 100 bucks?" [laughs] You can buy beer with that.
• 34:10
[laughs] All right, Mark, you got any- Yeah... you got anything before we wrap this sucker up here? Oh, no. Just, just a couple minor things. I'm not gonna give you the whole spiel.
• 34:19
I just hope that everyone out there eventually makes their way into, uh, Pronghorn Bicycle in Perry, where the phone number is 435-230-3775, or in Pronghorn Syracuse, where the phone number is
• 34:36
801-820-5934. I love you guys. Thanks for having me on. Oh, I wanted to do a shout-out to Paul, uh, Components, and in particular, uh, at Paul Components, uh, Gary, Gary and Paul at Paul Components.
• 34:54
They hooked me up with some parts this year, and those guys just treat me so well, and if you don't have any Paul Components on your bikes, you need some. Yeah. Oh, I fucking love them. I'm a Paul sucker.
• 35:05
[laughs] I, I like my Paul. Paul, wait a second. I'm a Paul sucker. I'm a Paul sucker over here. [laughs] Oh, hey, now. Excuse me? That sounds, sounds kinda bad. Paul, Paul Price- Anyway, you guys have a-...
• 35:12
one of the most solid guys in the world... you guys have a great afternoon. I love you so much. I hope you have a wonderful week, and I will talk to you the next time we talk.
• 35:19
Hey, keep, just brought something up, I'm thinking, next time we talk. What? You know Paul, right? You know him a little bit. You know Paul Price a little bit. I know Paul. We should get him on the show. Yeah.
• 35:28
Ask, yeah, he should be a caller, damn it. Yeah. I think he was, he was on Weekly Dose of Fat, I believe. I'm sure we talked to him at Interbike or something. That's that show I wasn't cool enough to be on?
• 35:36
That's the one. Yeah. That's, that's the one. [laughs] I'll, I'll message him. I'll, I'll bet you he'll do it. I'll bet you he'll do it. Oh, he'll do it. Even, uh- Yeah...
• 35:41
just tell him we have well over, like three listeners, and he'll- He'll be there... I'm sure he'll be there. [laughs] All right, Mark, thanks again. Always, always a good time talking to you. Love you, brother.
• 35:49
Have fun there, K. Love you guys. Later. Peace. Well, that helped fill the, uh, the cast. Right. It was like- He's so informative... our show would've been five minutes with, [laughs] with Omar. Eight. Come on. Okay.
• 36:01
Give yourself a little credit. For sound byte. We would've gotten to eight. Yeah. He's, it's almost like at times there he's interviewing us. It kinda turns tables. I like how he thinks. Isn't that kinda weird?
• 36:11
[laughs] I like, you know, he's... Yeah. Mark's a good guy. Well, he's got a, he should have his own show. He's got a bigger following than we do. Probably. He does. Shh.
• 36:18
He, he does have the peoples on the- And he won't call into us. Shh. Oh, yeah. There's a... You know what? Okay, so there's that freaking noise again. Yeah, I know. I heard it too. I don't know why. I tested before.
• 36:30
Wasn't here. Also- Maybe your cranium's a different size... it doesn't come through on the recording for some reason. It doesn't. It's just the hum for us? Yes. That's weird.
• 36:37
Apparently it just comes through our ears, not in through our mouth holes. I don't know. What are you doing? Probably vi- What are you doing?... probably vibrating his bunghole.
• 36:44
[laughs] [laughs] It is the witching month. All right, everybody. Thank you for listening to this edition of Mark Peterson Interviews the Guys, and we'll be back, I don't know, next week, right? Think so. Yeah. Usually.
• 36:59
  [outro music]
