- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome to Mini Scroll everyone. This new setup, I'm still
- 0:22getting used to it very much so as you can tell my mini scroll
- 0:26sign behind me is currently sitting on 2 candles.
- 0:30Really just trying to figure it out.
- 0:32It's a bit makeshift right now, but we're getting there.
- 0:35So today I am bringing you the Met Gala recap.
- 0:40Let's see if we can do this in a mini scroll sized episode.
- 0:46I am not confident because I love to waffle and there is so
- 0:51much to talk about, so many looks to go through.
- 0:53But let's get into it. So every year on the first
- 0:56Monday of May, Hollywood's elite rushed to the Metropolitan
- 0:59Museum of Art for Fashion's biggest night out AKA the Met
- 1:03Gala. Hosting this year's affair was
- 1:06Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya.
- 1:10As ambassadors of the event, they were responsible for
- 1:13curating the aesthetics of the night and embracing the theme.
- 1:16As Vogue notes quote, the role of a Co chair also expands into
- 1:20the guest list the food, the decor, and the general feel of
- 1:24the evening. While Internet users often treat
- 1:26the Met Gala as a fashion show, it is an annual fundraiser event
- 1:30for the Anna Wintour Costume Center at the New York City's
- 1:33Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute.
- 1:36That is a serious mouthful. That said, this year Soiree
- 1:40celebrated the opening of a new exhibit, Sleeping Beauty's
- 1:43Reawakening Fashion quote. The forthcoming show has not to
- 1:47do with the Brothers Grimm or Disney, but rather the
- 1:49celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can't
- 1:53ever be worn again, Lila Ramsey writes.
- 1:56For Vogue, the exhibition was paired with a specific dress
- 1:59code. This year, the theme was The
- 2:01Garden of Time, inspired by a short story by JG Ballard
- 2:05published in 1962. For those unfamiliar with
- 2:09Ballard's work, the story follows Count Axel and his wife
- 2:12as an unruly mob draws closer to the couple's tranquil villa.
- 2:15Ultimately, the story is a dystopian take on modern entity,
- 2:19pointing to the adverse effects of opulence, consumption and
- 2:22destruction. Quote The story ends with the
- 2:25unthinking mob descending onto the villa, now a derelict
- 2:28property with a neglected garden.
- 2:30Boiled down, the dress code as well as the exhibition is about
- 2:33fleeting beauty. OK, so with that in mind, I'm
- 2:37going to go through some of the looks.
- 2:39This is not a comprehensive list at all.
- 2:41I just had to pick and choose. And there are some key
- 2:45celebrities and some key looks that I just did not have the
- 2:49ability to put into these notes. I just didn't have time or I
- 2:52just didn't really care about them, you know?
- 2:53Like, I wanted to pick the ones that at least kind of gave me
- 2:57something, whether I liked it, whether I didn't like it.
- 3:00First off the bat, I wanted to say there was so much like
- 3:02ethereal fantasy going on, which I really like.
- 3:06I love that kind of aesthetic. But when it came to like the
- 3:09Garden of Time, people really embraced garden and not so much
- 3:14time. Annabelle was saying before
- 3:16there was such a missed opportunity for someone to come
- 3:19with like a million watches, like all up their sleeves or you
- 3:23know, anything that was like more signifying of time.
- 3:27I know that Tyler did have that hourglass purse which was so
- 3:31sick, but other than that, like there wasn't a ton of, like time
- 3:35imagery going on. And I feel like that was
- 3:37absolutely a missed opportunity. Lots of garden.
- 3:41OK, so first up, Emma Chamberlain.
- 3:43She was wearing Jean Paul Gaultier and I really liked her
- 3:47look. She felt very like gothic garden
- 3:50fairy. I loved how ethereal and Drapey
- 3:54it all was, but that was all black and Lacy.
- 3:56I loved it. I actually one of my favorite
- 3:59looks of the night. Her makeup was amazing, that
- 4:02Smokey eye. I find her makeup, the Mechala
- 4:04is always so stunning, and I don't know if that's just
- 4:07because we don't see Emma and makeup very often.
- 4:10I loved it. The only thing, there's one
- 4:13little thing that I just immediately clocked and I could
- 4:16not Unsee. Her foundation didn't quite
- 4:20match her body. It didn't quite match, just
- 4:23marginally, but I could not Unsee it.
- 4:25But I loved that she embraced her natural skin tone like she
- 4:29didn't have a spray tan. And actually, a lot of the
- 4:33attendees really rocked like kind of a paler skin look, like
- 4:37they're natural skin. And I loved that.
- 4:40OK, the next one that I wanted to talk about is Madeleine
- 4:44Klein. So she was wearing Tommy
- 4:46Hilfiger. I hated this dress.
- 4:51It looked like it didn't fit. First of all, I thought it was a
- 4:54really bad color on her. It reminded me of like a
- 4:59student, like a fashion student's first draft at what GJ
- 5:06had Jujit, Jujit Hadid, Gigi Hadid's dress actually was, and
- 5:12I'm going to talk about Gigi's in a bit, but that's what it
- 5:15reminded me of. It felt like unfinished.
- 5:18It felt like it was trying to do something that it just wasn't
- 5:21quite achieving. And I really liked her makeup.
- 5:24I love the white eyeliner, white eyeshadow.
- 5:27I loved her makeup, but it felt like her makeup, her hair and
- 5:32the dress they all belonged to, different looks like it wasn't
- 5:35cohesive at all and it just felt very disjointed and off base.
- 5:42And it was very upsetting to me because I love Madeline Klein
- 5:45and I feel like she usually kind of shows out for this kind of
- 5:48stuff. She's always a bit understated.
- 5:49She's never like the most costumey on at the Met Gala or
- 5:53on any red carpet, but she always, I feel like, does pretty
- 5:56well and this was just a huge miss for me.
- 5:58So next we have Zendaya. She was wearing Mason Margiela's
- 6:02Jean Galliano, and this was such a powerful look.
- 6:08Like, even look aside, anytime Zendaya shows up on a red
- 6:13carpet, I'm like, Oh yeah, you were born to be famous.
- 6:16The star power that just oozes out of her, it like, radiates
- 6:23off of her, like she has fame. You know that girl in TikTok
- 6:26that talks about how fame is like a resource, Like Zendaya
- 6:30has that resource more than fucking anybody in the world.
- 6:33It's actually unreal to watch her do a photo shoot on the red
- 6:38carpet, do interviews. Like it's it's unreal.
- 6:40Like she was meant to be famous. So anything she wears or does,
- 6:44even if it's like the ugliest thing ever, she just absolutely
- 6:47slays because she's just like amazing in her element in these
- 6:50moments. I did love the vibe and like her
- 6:54makeup was so sick. I didn't quite love the stripes
- 6:59at the bottom. I just like fucking hate
- 7:00stripes. Like there's just something
- 7:02about stripes that like, feel really juvenile and like
- 7:04clownish to me. So I really did not like the
- 7:07stripes. I felt like it kind of cheapened
- 7:10the look a bit. And then she had a second look,
- 7:14like after the red carpet kind of finished, maybe 30-40 minutes
- 7:16later she came back out and she was wearing this very like Pride
- 7:21and Prejudice, like Jet Black dress, which I really liked.
- 7:24But she was also wearing this hat.
- 7:27And I don't know if this was on purpose, but it looked like a
- 7:31giant fish was on her head, filled with flowers.
- 7:35And I don't know if it was supposed to be like a fish or if
- 7:38that's just what it ended up looking like.
- 7:40But to me, all I could see was that she was wearing a fish on
- 7:42her head. Next, Ariana Grande, she was
- 7:44wearing lueve. I think that's how you say it.
- 7:47I've seen some people call it low, but I think it's lueve.
- 7:50So this look, to me, it was unsurprising.
- 7:58I feel like it looks like everything that Ariana Grande
- 8:00has been wearing in this era of her career since she, you know,
- 8:03bleached her hair and is going for like a Manic Pixie Dream
- 8:07Girl. And we've seen this makeup look
- 8:08on her before, in my opinion. Like, she had these, I don't
- 8:13know, I guess they were supposed to be like little wings, like
- 8:16almost like fairy wings, kind of like off her eyes.
- 8:19And it just reminded me of so many of the makeup looks we've
- 8:21seen kind of in this era. Like I said, her dress had this.
- 8:26I mean, I loved the dress, like it was a beautiful look.
- 8:28It was just unsurprising and uninspired in my opinion.
- 8:33I liked how it had this dropped waist kind of toga inspired
- 8:38skirt that we saw a little bit of.
- 8:41We saw a little bit of like this toga vibe going on on the red
- 8:44carpet. But yeah, all together,
- 8:46obviously. Beautiful look.
- 8:47I think she looked like healthy and glowing.
- 8:49She looked the best. She's looked in a really long
- 8:51time in my opinion on this red carpet, but we have seen this
- 8:55from her many times before, in my opinion, over the last couple
- 9:00of years. OK, Gigi Hadid obsessed,
- 9:03obsessed. OK, so she was wearing Tom Brown
- 9:06and it was so Tom Brown. Like, it was so obvious.
- 9:08I'm not even a fashion girly. And I was like, that's got to be
- 9:10Tom Brown. I loved this.
- 9:13I could not stop looking at it. And I have no idea if that's
- 9:16like a popular opinion or not. I haven't really seen anyone
- 9:18talking about Gigi's look, but I freaking loved it.
- 9:22I thought it was So it was exactly.
- 9:24In my opinion, it wasn't necessarily Gigi, but it was
- 9:28very Tom Brown. It was exactly how like I would
- 9:30picture that designer interpreting this theme the way
- 9:34that I perceived it. It was like, you know, Gigi
- 9:36shedding this kind of more masculine energy and emerging as
- 9:42this, you know, beautiful feminine flower.
- 9:45And it was just the symbolism was so spot on.
- 9:49Like, I mean I I don't even know if you could call it symbolism,
- 9:52like it was just like handed to us on a plate.
- 9:54But I loved it. Like, I loved looking at her
- 9:56dress. It was so interesting to look
- 9:57at. And that's what I want from the
- 9:59Met Gala, right? Like, it doesn't necessarily
- 10:01need to be the most beautiful thing.
- 10:03It doesn't need to necessarily be like the most fashion forward
- 10:06thing. I just want it to be cool to
- 10:07look at. And that for me, like Gigi's
- 10:09look for me was that someone else I loved looking at was Lil
- 10:12Nas X. He was wearing Lore and he had
- 10:1550,000 Swarovski crystals all over this white suit and he had
- 10:21these sick nails like honestly, OK, this is gonna sound so
- 10:25unhinge, but they did remind me of Trisha Paytas's nails when
- 10:29she used to get like Bejeweled nails all the time.
- 10:32When she first started ASMR like 8 years ago, they did kind of
- 10:36remind me of Trisha Paytas's nails, but loved them.
- 10:39Very cool. I don't know if this was
- 10:41necessarily on theme, but I thought it was so sick to look
- 10:45at. It was so interesting.
- 10:46And he did have the flower, like he had a flower brooch thing.
- 10:50And I don't know, it was sick. OK, Dua Lipa, I hate to say it.
- 10:56So she was in Marc Jacobs. But I really did not like this.
- 11:00Somehow this look was both not boring at all and like the most
- 11:05boring thing that I've seen on the red carpet.
- 11:06Like if you asked me to describe what Dua Lipa wore on the red
- 11:10carpet, even though I have literally looked at so many
- 11:13photos of the Michaela in preparation for this episode, I,
- 11:16you know, wrote this. I put her photo in.
- 11:18I couldn't even tell you what she wore.
- 11:19Like it was so not memorable and I don't quite know why.
- 11:23And I know year after year we watch celebrities come on the
- 11:28Met Gala red carpet and we're like, that is not on theme, but
- 11:32I like it anyways or whatever. For me, being on theme is so
- 11:37important to the Met Gala. Like that's one of the major
- 11:40things that I look at. If it's interesting to look at
- 11:42and if it's on theme, those two things I care about a lot.
- 11:45And if it's not like, so obviously on theme, like if I'm
- 11:48having a hard time understanding if it's on theme, then to me
- 11:50it's not on theme. So it could be on theme, but for
- 11:52me it's not. Next we have Kylie Jenner.
- 11:55She was wearing Oscar de la Renta.
- 11:57And I mean, this was incredibly boring.
- 11:59I know it was based off of like a statue, but wow, this was so
- 12:04boring. The only thing that I think we
- 12:06haven't really seen Kylie do that she did in this look was
- 12:09the cone bra. But this literally just looks
- 12:11like every really chic, elegant look that we've seen Kylie do on
- 12:15a red carpet. I don't know, we've seen it 100
- 12:18times before. The problem with Kylie and also
- 12:21Kendall, and actually I would also argue Khloe Kardashian, but
- 12:25Khloe wasn't at the red carpet at the Met Gala.
- 12:27I'll talk about Kendall in a second, But the problem is that
- 12:30they care the most about looking hot, and I think that impacts
- 12:36the looks that they actually could pull off.
- 12:39And when it comes to Kylie, it's so disappointing because we've
- 12:42seen Kylie let her guard down and like, rough it up and be
- 12:46like, quote UN quote, like ugly in a photo shoot.
- 12:48Like, you know what I mean? Like really be like artistic and
- 12:50avant-garde and really cool, like this edgy grittiness.
- 12:54We've seen that from her in photo shoots before and in her
- 12:57modeling. But anytime she steps out in
- 13:00public or does a red carpet or does a Fashion Week or whatever,
- 13:03she cannot let her guard down. We never see that energy from
- 13:07her. She has to put this guard right
- 13:09back up where she's just like this stonewalled hot Kardashian.
- 13:13And it's such a shame because she has so much potential.
- 13:16Like we've seen the modeling shots.
- 13:18She should have been the model in the family.
- 13:21OK, Speaking of Kendall, she's wearing Shivanshi and same thing
- 13:27as I said with Kylie, just too much of A guard up, you know,
- 13:31her whole priority seems to always just being like looking
- 13:34hot in chic. And she did.
- 13:36She looked like a really hot brunette legless.
- 13:39She really went for that like elf vibe.
- 13:41It was a little bit more costume than I think we've seen her in
- 13:44recent years, which I appreciate because this is like literally
- 13:47the Costume Institute, but, you know, still pretty boring.
- 13:51Someone else who went elf vibes was Carol G went as, like an
- 13:55actual elf with, like, elf prosthetic ears, which actually
- 13:59appreciated. Like, if you're going to go for
- 14:00a vibe, like, go for a vibe like if you're going to go for like,
- 14:03this costume, just wear the fucking costume.
- 14:06And yeah, she looked exactly like, legless.
- 14:08So loved it. All right, Kim Kardashian.
- 14:11She was wearing Mason Margiela by John Galliano.
- 14:14I actually loved this. I loved the dress.
- 14:18Oh my God, I loved the dress. If you are going to do like
- 14:21ethereal garden vibes, this is how I want it to be.
- 14:24I feel like we saw a lot of dresses like Karlie Kloss's
- 14:27comes to mind. I'm not going to talk about her
- 14:29because I found it quite boring, but her dress for the red carpet
- 14:32comes to mind where everybody kind of did.
- 14:35If you're if they're going to go for like full on florals, they
- 14:37did what she did, which is kind of like sparkly flowers all over
- 14:41on like a mash or like nude dress.
- 14:43So it looks like you're naked but you're wearing flowers.
- 14:45Like everybody went for that vibe.
- 14:47And this was such a unique take on it because it was like
- 14:51similar, but it was like silver and just, I don't know, just the
- 14:54way it was executed. I don't know the right words
- 14:56because I'm not a fashion girly, but it was perfection.
- 14:59I fucking loved the dress. And I know the shawl sweater
- 15:03thing was kind of controversial, but I didn't mind it.
- 15:06Like I thought it made the look really interesting and it didn't
- 15:10take away from it. I think sometimes when
- 15:13celebrities add things to their looks, like this, like costumey
- 15:16things to their looks, it can take away from the dress.
- 15:19I don't think it did that at all.
- 15:20I don't think it necessarily needed the shawl, but I
- 15:24understood where the vision was, I think.
- 15:27I think. But everyone of course is
- 15:29talking about Kim's waist because it is literally this
- 15:33big, literally the smallest waist that we've ever seen.
- 15:36I mean, that's always her thing, OK, right.
- 15:38So she always makes a body part, part of her outfits or
- 15:43aesthetic. So for years it was her butt,
- 15:45and now it is her waist and her arms.
- 15:48And her obsession with her tiny waist started at the Met Gala,
- 15:52if you guys remember when she wore that dress, I don't
- 15:54remember. Was it also the same designer?
- 15:57I don't remember who designed it, but it was that dress where
- 16:01she was, like dripping. Like it looked like she was
- 16:03dripping in water and Kanye was there as well.
- 16:05And she had like, that slicked wet black hair.
- 16:08So good. I loved that look.
- 16:10So yes, that was, I believe the beginning of her obsession with
- 16:13her tiny little waist and everybody's like, did she get
- 16:16ribs removed? How is she doing this?
- 16:19I think we forget how tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny Kim
- 16:23Kardashian is. Like she's very curvy.
- 16:25So she looks I think like bigger than she actually is on our
- 16:30screens. But she herself, she's like 5
- 16:33foot, like she is like a tiny little Polly pocket.
- 16:36And her hip to waist ratio has always been quite extreme.
- 16:40And I think over the years with her BBLS and things like that,
- 16:43you know, that's only become more exaggerated.
- 16:45So I do believe this is her real waist and it is wild because
- 16:49it's so small. But she is so small.
- 16:50Like she is like a tiny person. I think if you saw her in
- 16:53person, you would be shocked at how tiny she actually is.
- 16:56I don't think she's had like, ribs removed or anything like
- 16:59that. I think she's wearing like a
- 17:00really aggressive corset. And her hip to waist ratio is so
- 17:06extreme that it looks so much smaller.
- 17:09Someone else who is a tiny little Polly pocket is Sabrina
- 17:12Carpenter. She was wearing Oscar de la
- 17:14Renta and to me, this look was so underwhelming, so unfortunate
- 17:21because she is literally the pop star of the moment.
- 17:25And yeah, it was just boring. She could have worn this on any
- 17:29red carpet. The glam I feel like she could
- 17:32have just done if she did like a lighter brow, even like a bleach
- 17:35brow. I don't know, maybe we're over
- 17:36bleach brows. But if she did a lighter brow or
- 17:39something more interesting with her makeup, she just did her
- 17:41pretty much regular glam and it's like if she had just done
- 17:45something more interesting, I think it could have helped.
- 17:49But this all together was just so nothing, unfortunately.
- 17:54But I did love, like I said about Emma Chamberlain, I loved
- 17:57her pale skin, like her skin really was to me the standout of
- 18:01this whole look, just how youthful and hydrated and
- 18:04luminous it looked. And I loved that.
- 18:07It didn't look like she had a spray tan and she was rocking
- 18:09kind of like her natural pale skin.
- 18:11It was very elegant and I loved that vibe.
- 18:14But yes, disappointed for sure. Taylor Russell was in Lavey and
- 18:19she had a drop toga waist like Ariana Grande and she had this
- 18:24like wooden shield almost as the top with florals kind of painted
- 18:30on it. Just very minimal, like two big
- 18:32flowers on either like top and bottom.
- 18:35And it was very cool. It was very interesting to look
- 18:38at And Morgan Stewart said that this was real fashion.
- 18:43So I'm going to believe it and I'm going to say that this was a
- 18:46win because I believe Morgan Stewart and then Lana Del Rey.
- 18:50She was wearing Alexander McQueen by Sean Mcgear.
- 18:54I loved this. She was wrapped in twigs and
- 18:56like draped in fabric, and she looked exactly like the antler
- 19:00queen from yellow Jackets. That's like the first thing I
- 19:03thought of. But it was so sick.
- 19:06I think it was such an interesting twist, like a unique
- 19:08twist on the theme. We didn't see anything else like
- 19:12it, as far as I could tell from anyone else, and it felt just so
- 19:16right. And so on theme, it didn't feel
- 19:18over the top, it didn't overpower her, but it still felt
- 19:21like a Met Gala costume, quote, UN quote, right?
- 19:24Like something you would want to see on the Met Gala.
- 19:26Because for me, the marker of a Met Gala outfit is like
- 19:28something you couldn't wear on another red carpet.
- 19:31So to me, perfect. OK, Sydney Sweeney, she was in
- 19:36mew mew. Oh my God, this was such a miss
- 19:39for me. Unfortunately.
- 19:41First of all, I thought it was Billie Eilish and I don't know
- 19:43why, but if it was Billie Eilish I probably would have liked it
- 19:46more. I don't know, it was just
- 19:48something. It felt so off.
- 19:51This look completely overpowered her, especially the wig.
- 19:55The wig was like too big for her head, almost too big for her
- 19:59face. And it felt like a kid playing
- 20:02dress up in a wig store, like a costume store, as opposed to
- 20:06somebody stepping out for the Mechala, like one of the biggest
- 20:08actresses in the world going to the Mechala.
- 20:11It just overpowered her, like she was not wearing this look.
- 20:14This look was wearing her Mindy Kaling, She was wearing Gaurav
- 20:19Gupta. And I loved the back of her
- 20:21dress. This is another one that I
- 20:23haven't seen a lot of people talk about or mentioned.
- 20:26So I don't know if this is, I don't know, a popular opinion or
- 20:29not, but I really fucking love this.
- 20:31I thought it was so sick. I loved the back of it and I
- 20:35loved how it like twisted up to the front over her head, like I
- 20:37thought it was so cool. It was one of the coolest
- 20:39dresses that I think I've ever seen anybody wear.
- 20:42It was sick. It felt like a look worthy of
- 20:44the Met Gala. And then we have Cardi B and she
- 20:46was the last one to arrive on the red carpet.
- 20:49Zendaya went on the red carpet again after with her second
- 20:51look, but as far as I know, Cardi waited until everyone was
- 20:55off the red carpet and then she went on.
- 20:58She was wearing window sin and it was this massive like giant
- 21:04beautiful black tulle dress. I don't know if it was on theme,
- 21:12but I don't know if it matters because it was so cool, like it
- 21:15was ginormous, despite how ginormous it was.
- 21:19It did not overpower her like she was fucking wearing that
- 21:22look. She really has these amazing
- 21:25high fashion moments. I fucking love it.
- 21:27It almost looks like the embodiment of, you know, when
- 21:31you're watching a kids movie. I don't know how to explain this
- 21:33well. And they're in like a forest or
- 21:36a jungle or something. And then this bad presence
- 21:40starts to seep in to the nature and it like, overwhelms it.
- 21:44And it's almost like this, like smoky, like black smoky fog or
- 21:48like sludge or something. That's what it reminds me of.
- 21:51Like it reminds me of an ethereal fairy forest that is
- 21:54getting like contaminated with bad vibes, which is actually
- 21:58kind of the theme. So I take it back.
- 22:01She was on theme, OK? And my best dressed, finally, my
- 22:06best best dressed was Mona Patel.
- 22:09So Mona is actually a fashion entrepreneur, and she's not
- 22:13super famous. She only have 15,000 Instagram
- 22:16followers when she went on the red carpet.
- 22:18She's like a philanthropist. She like combines her business,
- 22:21combines philanthropy and fashion.
- 22:22And I think she does a lot of other things in fashion as well.
- 22:25But it was her first Met Gala. She was styled by La Roche and
- 22:29she was wearing Iris Van Herpen and her dress.
- 22:33I just thought it was perfect. It was ethereal, but it was also
- 22:37like armor almost. It was it was it like combined
- 22:40the theme perfectly. It was like she was wearing this
- 22:42coat of arms almost to protect herself, but it was so ethereal
- 22:47and beautiful. It kind of did feel a bit like
- 22:48elfish. But then on her arms this is
- 22:52like what did it for me. She had all of these butterflies
- 22:56and they moved when she walked and it was so beautiful, like
- 23:01stunning. I feel like this is the perfect
- 23:04way to do something that's really feminine and beautiful
- 23:07and ethereal while also being really interesting and different
- 23:12to me. It was just exactly what the Met
- 23:15is about. So that's that, guys.
- 23:17I hope that this episode wasn't too long, but I'm sure you guys
- 23:19won't mind. Thank you so much for listening
- 23:22to Mini Scroll. I love you guys and I will talk
- 23:24to you tomorrow. Bye.
