- 0:41Speaker 1: The f A Hey all, welcome this week's show. Probably
- 1:02actually gonna have a couple of shows this week. I
- 1:04want to wrap up our series on the Seven Virtues
- 1:08and their opposite vices. I can think I can do
- 1:11that today and then tomorrow evening I have a really
- 1:16interesting interview concerning the Catholic Land movement. So if I
- 1:22can get that recorded and that it didn't ready, hopefully
- 1:26well Wednesday or Thursday, I should have that way to go,
- 1:29So stay tuned. It should be really good. Actually I'm
- 1:32looking forward to it. Of course. Today is January twenty
- 1:37and I am grinning from ear to ear watching the inauguration.
- 1:40President Trump is finally back in office. Joe Biden, who
- 1:45stole the presidency, the illegitimate president who has done uncalculable,
- 1:50incalculable damaged our nation, is finally out of the presidency,
- 1:55but not before parting his entire family. You know, I
- 1:58guess when you take you know, fifty sixty one hundred
- 2:00billion dollars or million, I guess it would be million.
- 2:03That's one of the few things in Washington's still in
- 2:05the millions from the communist Chinese and other American enemies.
- 2:10You think maybe it sort of like a tacit admission
- 2:13that there's a little guilt there. And of course he
- 2:15pardoned the entire January sixth Committee, and some cop killers
- 2:20and all kinds of good people, real good people. So
- 2:25the long national nightmare is over, and the new era
- 2:28has begun, and God willing, we will have a very
- 2:32very Catholic JD Vance as president four years from now.
- 2:37I pray in the name of the Father and the
- 2:39Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Now returning to the
- 2:45classic book, Radio replies the questioner asks, well, the quintessential question,
- 2:51isn't it what is truth? And they answer Truth is
- 2:58the exact knowledge of things just as they are. Isn't
- 3:01that something a simple answer to what should be a
- 3:04simple question. Person replies, authority bears no relationship to truth,
- 3:10and they reply, it bears a tremendous relation of truth.
- 3:14The whole system of educating to truth supposes authority in
- 3:18a body of teachers. God is truth itself and the
- 3:21source of all truth. When God speaks, what he says
- 3:24has authority, and the authority of his works is absolute
- 3:29guarantee of the truth of what he says. Person continues,
- 3:33truth is too big a thing for one religion to quarter,
- 3:38and they answer, reason should tell you that the God
- 3:41who made both the universe and man, must know the
- 3:45truth about both. He should tell you that if God
- 3:48definitely tells man anything, the information must be sound. It
- 3:52would justify the fact that God has spoken. If you
- 3:55would but examine the credentials of the Catholic Church and
- 3:59find if it would show you, and finally, it would
- 4:04show you that the Catholic Church is big enough to
- 4:06contain all the truth revealed by God. On the subject
- 4:09of religion, the person says, dogma will not save a
- 4:13single soul, and they reply alone it will not. But
- 4:16since the Catholic Church is the true Church which Christ
- 4:18commanded us to hear, the conscious and deliberate rejection of
- 4:24her dogmas can forfeit salvation. All right, now, let's get
- 4:30on to our last chapter in Fellishpirago's section on devices
- 4:37and virtues, or I should say virtues and vices, because
- 4:40He always gives the virtue first. And we're actually nearing
- 4:45the end of this massive book. Believe it or not.
- 4:47We've spent more than a year on this and we
- 4:50are at now over five hundred pages into a seven
- 4:54hundred page book. Sofi or not, we will soon wrap
- 5:00this one up. And I honestly so much of what
- 5:04I do online in terms of social media is answer
- 5:09questions from Catholics and debate Protestants. Sometimes you get a
- 5:15legitimate question, a lot of times you get debate or
- 5:19just they tell you you're going to Hell because you're Catholic.
- 5:21And then you come back and say, well, wait to meet.
- 5:23The Bible says this is the Bible says that you
- 5:25know we're actually right in this matter. Father Spirago's exhaustive
- 5:29Catechism of the Catholic Church is, in my opinion, the
- 5:36perhaps i'll say perhaps the greatest reference when it comes
- 5:41to matters of doctrine. The modern Catechism is very good.
- 5:44I love the Catechism that was approved under Pope Saint
- 5:48John Paul. Second, you know, that's what brought me into
- 5:51the church. But I guess I wouldn't take one over
- 5:57the other. The one explains the other, and vice versa.
- 6:01It's really Father's Baraguo's work in the eighteen nineties, I
- 6:05think is essential. And when someone has a question and
- 6:09I pull up an answer and I say, well, here's
- 6:11what Father Sprague said, or I actually just copy and
- 6:13paste quote verbatim. For Catholics, that's like they're always like,
- 6:19that's the answer I was looking for. Okay, that's exact. Now,
- 6:22I understand this. For Protestants, they're like, I don't really
- 6:27understand that. And so you go into depth and you say, well,
- 6:30here's what the Bible said on this, and here's Catholic
- 6:33teaching on it, and they either accept it or not,
- 6:36and of course most times they don't accept it at all,
- 6:41you know, recently, I'm me. I think I mentioned this
- 6:44last time, but I mean, this is how, this is
- 6:47how fallible and weak. The Protestant argument is for the
- 6:52Bible alone, without sacred tradition, without the what the oral
- 6:56tradition of what Jesus told the apostles and what they
- 7:00passed on to us, and without the teaching authority of
- 7:02the church. Person is vowing and declaring that all Christians
- 7:06must go to church on the Jewish Sabbath, and anybody
- 7:09who goes to church on Sunday is a Satan worshiper.
- 7:11I mean, you get this all the time. Seven day
- 7:14adventistur observant, whatever they want to call themselves. And they said,
- 7:18where in the Bible did Jesus say that you were
- 7:21supposed to go to church on Sunday. Now we've been
- 7:23through a lot before this. We talked about, you know,
- 7:26various scriptures. The Sabbath has made for man, not man
- 7:32made for the Sabbath. The son of Man is lord
- 7:34of the Sabbath. That when Jesus was questioned about what
- 7:37was the heart of the law, he mentioned thou should
- 7:40not killed, they should not steal, they should not commit adultery.
- 7:44Love God with all your heart, love your neighbors, yourself.
- 7:46He never once mentioned the Sabbath. He continually violated the
- 7:50Sabbath over and over and over, and that's one of
- 7:53the reasons they crucified him. Actually, I mean that and
- 7:58forgiving sins. I mean he basically violated the entire mosaic
- 8:02law to keep, you know, going over and over. The
- 8:07apostles had no authority. Where did Jesus say it? Well?
- 8:11And I said to him, first of all, what does
- 8:14the Bible say is the pillar and foundation of the truth?
- 8:17You know, I was debating three processes, and not one
- 8:20single one would answer it. I gave them chapter and verse.
- 8:23Where in this chapter in verse does the Bible What
- 8:26does in this chapter verse does the Bible say is
- 8:29the pillar and foundation of the truth? Reasonly wouldn't answer
- 8:32is because it says the church. I said, Jesus said,
- 8:36if a man would not listen to the church, let
- 8:38him be to you as a heathen. One of them
- 8:40told me that verse didn't even appear in the Bible.
- 8:42And when I gave him the chapter in verse was
- 8:44from Matthew, he blocked me. I mean, that was it,
- 8:48That was the end of it. He could not accept it.
- 8:51The one that really confounded them was when I said,
- 8:57after the Resurrection and before the Ascension, after the Church
- 9:04had been established, Jesus spent about forty days with the apostles,
- 9:09teaching them everything they would need to know in establishing
- 9:12his church. What does the Bible say that he taught
- 9:15them during that period. None of them can answer my question,
- 9:21because the Bible is essentially silent on that. Jesus very
- 9:26likely told them now our day of worship is going
- 9:28to be Sunday. Why do I say very likely because
- 9:31the d do ka was written before the Bible was
- 9:35even completed. The d do Kae is the teaching of
- 9:37the twelfth and it's the original catechism, The original Manual
- 9:41of Christian Worship. It was at least written before the
- 9:44Book of Revelations or the Apocalypse of John, whatever you
- 9:47want to call it, probably even earlier than that. Certainly
- 9:51several of the Apostles were alive when it was published
- 9:54and sent to all Christian churches to be taken as doctrine.
- 9:58And it specifies Sunday worship. You know. You can then
- 10:01say well, they say, well, you know the Lord days
- 10:04the Jewish abisten. I said, no, the Lord's days, the
- 10:06day went to Jerusalem, the day rose from the dead,
- 10:09and the day of Pentecost. That's the Lord's Day. It's
- 10:13very clear, and in the in the d dot K
- 10:16they made it extra clear. And in the writings of
- 10:19the Christians of the first in second centuries, I mean
- 10:23Pope say Clement of Round, the fourth Pope ordained by
- 10:26Saint Peter, Saint Ignatius, or yeah, ordained by Saint Paul,
- 10:33and so many others that also knew the apostles. They
- 10:37write over and over and over. We no longer recognize
- 10:41the Jewish Sabbath. We are a new church that celebrates
- 10:44the Lord's Day on the day he rose from the dead,
- 10:47and the purpose of our gathering together is to receive
- 10:50the Eucharist, and not a one of them, not a
- 10:53single one of them can accept it. I mean, it's
- 10:56just absolutely amazing. I'm telling you, you pull one thread
- 11:03in Protestantism and it falls apart. And what's so because
- 11:08they are protesting as their heart at their ideology. They
- 11:12keep poking, they keep poking. Why do Catholics do this?
- 11:15You tell them, and they just they can't answer it.
- 11:17They have no answer. They blow up and that's the
- 11:20end of it. I'm telling you. Protestantism may be a
- 11:25mild wide, but it's an inch deep and it's going
- 11:28to come to an end. And we need books like
- 11:31Father Spiagos so that we can give justification for what
- 11:34we believe, so that we can bring these people into
- 11:37the church. And that's going to be very important over
- 11:40the next few decades because mainline Protestantism is dying. In
- 11:45my lifetime, the attendance of the Episcopal Church is dropped
- 11:50by almost seventy percent. Episcopal An Anglican Lutheran mainline Lutheran.
- 11:55There's also Evangelical. Mainline Lutheran has dropped by about seventy percent.
- 12:00Presbyterian has dropped by over fifty percent. Methodists has dropped
- 12:05by over forty percent. And I mean basically mainline Protestantism
- 12:10is dying post COVID. The Baptists, there's Northern Babtists, there's
- 12:17Southern Babtists, are different kind Babtists, but you take them
- 12:19as a whole, it's down about thirty percent. Basically, you know,
- 12:23the families destroyed. These you know, they approve divorce, people
- 12:26get divorced three or four times, They move all around,
- 12:28they're not connected to their roots, and they just stop
- 12:31going to church after a while. And you know, you
- 12:34can look at the big you know, evangelical superchurches say
- 12:38they're growing, but you know, actually in terms of affiliation
- 12:43and church attendance, Protestantism is dying. Meanwhile Catholicism is growing.
- 12:49So we have to be able to fill this role.
- 12:53So now let's get into the virtue. It's the last
- 12:55of them, and it starts with zeal in what is good?
- 13:00I had never heard this growing up, you know, I
- 13:02was actually long before I became Catholic confirmed in the
- 13:05Methodist Church. It was never such a thing taught to
- 13:07me as zeal in what is doing good? Well, of course,
- 13:11a base their belief so on Lutheranism, which says good,
- 13:15good works doesn't matter. Luther told what was his name, Marcion,
- 13:19another Lutheran to you know, encourage him to commit murder
- 13:23and adultery, to be the worst sinner you could, because
- 13:27you know that would prove the grace of God somehow.
- 13:32I mean, as Catholics we try to avoid sin and
- 13:35do good. But you know, Luther was a very very
- 13:40very bad guy, very very very bad guy, actually an Antichrist.
- 13:47But anyway, zeal in what is good consists in working
- 13:51out one salvation with all earnestness and fervor unless zeal springs,
- 13:56and there you see, it's the opposite of Protestant belief,
- 14:00working out one salvation with all earnestness and fervor. It
- 14:03may be the words of Saint Paul essentially, but Protestants
- 14:07do not believe that at all. They believe in faith
- 14:09alone and once saved, always saved, and grace that covers
- 14:13up all your sins. They don't tell you that they
- 14:17don't believe in mortal sin. Let's put it that way,
- 14:20or that we'll just keep reading. It must also be discreet,
- 14:25or it would do more harm than good. Unless zeal
- 14:28springs from the love of God, it is valueless. It
- 14:31must also be discreet, or it would do more harm
- 14:33than good. He whose zeal is without discretion is like
- 14:36a man who is gathering up the cockle in the field,
- 14:40roots up the wheat together with it. Matthew thirteen twenty nine.
- 14:45Blind zeal. Cockle, by the way, is weed. Okay, it's
- 14:49not cockles, which in English can mean a shellfish. So
- 14:54not that you were confused, but I just fear i'd
- 14:56clarify it. Blind zeal is only pernicious if Alexander the
- 15:01Great performs such great achievements for the sake of earthly renown.
- 15:05What ought not we to do, who aspire to eternal glory?
- 15:10We ought each day to serve God as if it
- 15:12were the first day of our consecration to his service.
- 15:16We should be like the merchant who never thinks he
- 15:19has made enough money, but is continually on watch for
- 15:21fresh gains, Or like the traveler who does not look
- 15:25back upon the way which which he has traveled or traverse,
- 15:28but only onward to the goal before him. He who
- 15:31is zealous in what is good avails himself as far
- 15:35as can, as far as he can of the means
- 15:38of grace the Church affords for his sanctification. He is
- 15:42assiduous at prayer. He frequently approaches the sacrament. He listens
- 15:47attentively to the Word of God and reads spiritual books sacraments.
- 15:51Of course, he neglects no opportunity of doing good works.
- 15:56He never refuses in alms to the poorci he innteriously
- 16:00observes the Fast of the church. He devotes his free
- 16:04time to prayer. Moreover, he who is zealous and what
- 16:07is good cheerfully makes sacrifice for God. He glad. He
- 16:11is glad when he is ridiculed or persecuted for his faith.
- 16:15He rejoices in the sufferings that come to him from God.
- 16:18He will give up anything rather than commit sin. He
- 16:22is even ready to lay down his life for Christ
- 16:25if need be. He who is zealous in what is good,
- 16:28exerts himself also for the salvation of others. He strives
- 16:32to dessure his subordinates, his friends, his relatives from sin.
- 16:35He admonishes them and prays for them. He prays besides
- 16:39for the conversion of the heretic and sinners. How much
- 16:43the saints did In this way, Zeel was like a
- 16:45fire which spreads all around, both far and near. Without
- 16:49zeal in what is good, we cannot be saved. For
- 16:53the Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence. Our Lord says, not
- 16:57everyone that saith to me, Lord Lord, turn into the
- 17:00Kingdom of Heaven Matthew eight twenty one. That alone should
- 17:05be enough to disprove the twin tenant of Protestantism, which
- 17:10is the Bible alone and faith alone. Well, not everyone
- 17:13that saith to me, Lord Lord, shall enter into the
- 17:16Kingdom of Heaven. And in another place, he says, the
- 17:19Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it
- 17:21away Matthew eleven twelve. Of those who run a race,
- 17:25he who perseveres will receive the price. One Corinthians nine
- 17:29twenty four. Let us not imagine that it is an
- 17:31easy manner matter to be saved. Eternal felicity is spoken
- 17:36of as a kingdom, the city of God, the House
- 17:39of God, paradise in a crown. All these things can
- 17:43only be acquired by a fierce battle or a large sum.
- 17:48Or for a large sum, only those who have a
- 17:51long training can obtain a high salary. Yet the Kingdom
- 17:56of Heaven is bought cheaply. The price paid for it
- 17:59comes infant short. The price paid for it comes infinitely
- 18:04short of its value. Without zeal and energy, nothing can
- 18:08be accomplished. God allows obstacles to be placed in the
- 18:12way of every good work to test our will. No
- 18:15good work can be performed without some sacrifice. No virtue
- 18:18can be gained without a struggle. The greater violence thou
- 18:22offerest to thyself, the greater progress thou wilt make. That's
- 18:27from imitation of Christ. What Thomas campus I believe, Book one,
- 18:32chapter twenty five. We cannot expect our prayer to be
- 18:35heard unless we persevere in spite of all hindrance. Remember
- 18:39the example of Saint Monica and the blind Man by
- 18:42the wayside. That's Luke, eighteen thirty five. The opposite of
- 18:49zeal is sloth. Now this one we know, we know,
- 18:52we know sloth is a vice, but I never really
- 18:56heard it contrasted in terms of zeal. I like that
- 19:02though sloth consistence shunning everything that conduces either to our
- 19:07temporal or eternal well being, provided it be toilsome. Sloth
- 19:12displays itself either by indolence, dislike of work, and the
- 19:16fulfillment even of the duties of one's calling, or by tipidity,
- 19:20in which indifference to what is good and conducive to
- 19:23one's spiritual welfare, This slothful man displays distaste for all
- 19:27good works. We find life and movement and activity in
- 19:32all nature. The celestial host lawed and magnify the most
- 19:35high continually. The heavenly bodies revolve unceasingly in space. Trees
- 19:40and herbs grow to the air appointed size. The tiny
- 19:43ant lays up a store in summer. The busy bees
- 19:46make honey, and do not suffer drones to live. And
- 19:49shall man alone be an idler, an exception to all
- 19:53creatures whom instinct teaches to abhor idles. Go to the ant,
- 19:58oh sluggard, and consider her way Proverbs six to six.
- 20:02The indolent postpone all work to a future day, and
- 20:05only pursue sensual pleasures Tomorrow tomorrow, not today, is their cry.
- 20:11The lukewarm Christian wills and does not will. He would
- 20:16fain have the wages God gives, but the will, but
- 20:19he has not the will to work for it. As
- 20:23soon as it is a question of putting force upon himself,
- 20:25he shrinks back. Yet this slothful think they do more
- 20:28than others. For a while. The fervent look at those
- 20:31who do better themselves to learn humility. They, on the contrary,
- 20:35look at the good not in others, but in themselves. Hence,
- 20:39this lawsful never attain perfection. Great sinners have been known
- 20:43to become great saints. But the lukewarm, never idonness leads
- 20:49to all kinds of vice. It brings misery into life
- 20:51and eternal damnation in the life to come. Ioness has
- 20:55taught much evil Ecclesiastis thirty three twenty nine. It is,
- 21:00in fact the source of every evil habit. Man is
- 21:04like the earth. If a filled be not sown with
- 21:06good seed, a crop of weeds spring up and grow
- 21:09in the space. So if a man has no useful occupation,
- 21:12his natural activity turns to all manner of mischief. If
- 21:16you don't believe that, visit the local housing project. I
- 21:20think you'll see very soon. Putting people on welfare and
- 21:25so they don't have to work will result in the
- 21:29crime violence, destruction. Yeah, iron, rust when is not used,
- 21:35water when stagnant, becomes foul, and a man corrupted by
- 21:39idleness becomes the abode of evil passions and falls into
- 21:43manifold temptations. The busy man is assailed by one demon,
- 21:47the unemployed by one hundred. The idle man, who does
- 21:51nothing all day is like the trunk of a tree
- 21:53without without foliage, and without fruit. Idleness springs misery in
- 21:58this life. Holy Scripture says the slothful once shall come
- 22:02upon thee in poverty. Proverbs six ' eleven. Saint John
- 22:06Christostom declares idleness to be the parent of poverty and
- 22:09the root of despair. It also brings a man to
- 22:13eternal damnation. Illness is in excess, idleness is in itself
- 22:20a sin. A servant may not steal, or drink, or
- 22:23be insolent, but if he has the fault of being lazy,
- 22:26his master will dismiss him from his service. God acts
- 22:29in the same manner. Every tree that bringeth not forth
- 22:32good fruit should be cut down and cast into the
- 22:34fire Matthew seven nineteen. The servant who refuses to trade
- 22:39with talents his Lord has confided to him shall be
- 22:43cast into the exterial darkness. There shall be weeping and
- 22:47gnashing of teeth matched through twenty five point thirty. The
- 22:51idler cannot indeed hope that heaven will be his portion.
- 22:55For our Lord, says, call the laborers and give them
- 22:59their higher God does not love those who love their
- 23:02own ease. He expressly states as those who are lukewarm,
- 23:07neither cold nor hot, he will vomit them out of
- 23:10his mouth as Apocalypse or Revelations three sixteen. That is
- 23:16to say, he is disgusted with them. Our God is
- 23:20a consuming fire, and he delights in the adoration of
- 23:23the seraphim, who are in flame with a burning love.
- 23:26An open unbeliever is less abhorrent to him than a
- 23:29tepid Christian. Those who are inclined to indolence should think
- 23:33frequently of the reward, both temporal and external, of industry,
- 23:37and thus they will overcome their distasteful work. Look not,
- 23:41o Christians, says Saint Augustine, on the labor that it
- 23:44costs thee. Look rather to the rest and the joys
- 23:47which God promises thee. See how infinitely they outweigh all
- 23:52thy toil in doing good. Let us not fail, for
- 23:55in due time we shall reap not failing Galatians six.
- 24:00All right, y'all, we will wrap it up there. I
- 24:03will talk to you next time, and the words of
- 24:06Saint Padre Pio pray, hope and don't worry. Have a
- 24:09going
