- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 4th of November and if you are in Australia, today is
- 0:19the day where we have a little horse race that stops the
- 0:22nation. Quite literally everyone stops,
- 0:24turns on the telly and cheers on some random horse that they got
- 0:28in the sweep at work. Or you might be way more
- 0:31sophisticated than I am, but what I think is brilliant is
- 0:34that not only is this this day that everyone pays attention to
- 0:37the industry of horse racing, but it's also use your common
- 0:42sense day. Isn't that a perfect
- 0:45combination? So use your common sense, folks.
- 0:48And in case you're wondering, Gee, what should I be doing?
- 0:51Well, that's why we're reading through the book of James.
- 0:54That's a pretty poor Segway, but we're going to work with it.
- 0:56We are going to read today about drawing closer to God and about
- 1:01not judging. Other peoples are being overly
- 1:02confident. So if you're wanting some good
- 1:05common sense, I reckon this is even better than common sense.
- 1:07This is godly sense. So with all that said and done,
- 1:11Holy Spirit, open up our hearts so that we can hear your word
- 1:16and be guided by your truth. Let's do it, friends.
- 1:20Let us read together James chapter 4.
- 1:33What is causing the quarrels and fights among you?
- 1:36Don't they come from the evil desire at war within you?
- 1:40You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it.
- 1:45You were jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so
- 1:48you fight and wage war to take it away from them.
- 1:52Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for
- 1:56it. And even when you ask, you don't
- 1:58get it because your motives are all wrong.
- 2:01You want only what will give you pleasure.
- 2:05You adulterers, don't you realise that friendship with the
- 2:08world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, if you want to
- 2:12be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
- 2:17Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning?
- 2:20They say that God is passionate, that the Spirit He has placed
- 2:23within us should be faithful to Him, and he gives grace
- 2:28generously, as the Scriptures say.
- 2:31God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
- 2:36So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil and he will
- 2:40flee from you. Come close to God and God will
- 2:45come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners.
- 2:49Purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God
- 2:53and the world. Let there be tears for what you
- 2:57have done. Let there be sorrow and deep
- 3:00grief. Let there be sadness instead of
- 3:02laughter and gloom instead of joy.
- 3:05Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in
- 3:10honour. Don't speak evil against each
- 3:15other. Dear brothers and sisters, if
- 3:17you criticise and judge each other, then you're criticising
- 3:20and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law,
- 3:26not to judge whether it applies to you.
- 3:28God alone, who gave the law is the judge.
- 3:32He alone has the power to save or to destroy.
- 3:36So what right do you have to judge your neighbour?
- 3:41Look here, you who say today or tomorrow we are going to a
- 3:45certain town and will stay there a year, we will do business
- 3:49there and make a profit. How do you know what your life
- 3:53will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning
- 3:56fog. It's here a little while, then
- 3:59it's gone. What you ought to say is, if the
- 4:03Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.
- 4:08Otherwise you were boasting about your own pretentious
- 4:11plans, and all such boasting is evil.
- 4:15Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do
- 4:20it. Oh Jesus, what confronting
- 4:33scripture we read today because we are confronted with the fact
- 4:38that our world is so different from your priorities and the
- 4:44constant osmosis that changes us because of the world that we
- 4:48live in. We need to push back against.
- 4:51Friendship with the world is not friendship with you.
- 4:54So Jesus, I pray that today you help us choose friendship with
- 4:58you. You help us choose that way of
- 5:02humility rather than self confidence and pride, that way
- 5:07of generosity rather than the way of criticism and judgement.
- 5:15We want to be your people, bringing about your ways in this
- 5:19broken world. Help us continually find our
- 5:23identity in you, Jesus, as your brother or sister, as a child of
- 5:30the living God, not of the citizen of the space in which we
- 5:34live, in this temporal world that will be gone like the
- 5:38morning fog disappears. You are eternal, loving,
- 5:44righteous and wonderful God. We commit ourselves to you.
- 5:47And pray all of this in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
