Latest / Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered / Ross & Rizzo REACT to Jose Ramirez COSTLY ERROR, Rays BEAT Guardians: ALCS tied 1-1 | MLB Playoffs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered. I'm Anthony Rizzo
- 0:03Speaker 1: with my partner, David Ross. Game two of the American
- 0:07Speaker 1: League Division Series is a wrap. Kind of the first
- 0:11Speaker 1: game of the playoffs this year is kind of ho-hum, Rossi.
- 0:14Speaker 1: 3-1 win by the Rays. They evened the series. Going
- 0:20Speaker 1: into Cleveland now. They got three games. They have to
- 0:22Speaker 1: off day tomorrow. But not the most exciting game. Air
- 0:26Speaker 1: by Jose Ramirez cost them. tough play, kind of in-between
- 0:30Speaker 1: play off that tough turf there at the Trop, but
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Rays bounce back. They win. Junior Cameron Harris said, look,
- 0:36Speaker 1: we lost one game a lot this year. It's just
- 0:39Speaker 1: one game, and they even the series up.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, we are all tied up, 1-1 going to Cleveland. Yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 2: it was a well-pitched game. I thought Parker Messick threw
- 0:49Speaker 2: well there, kind of forced the hand of Steven Vogt,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and You.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Know, Peralta lit it up. You could tell he was
- 0:57Speaker 3: juiced up, throwing absolute shit.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Dude, he's been electric, man. Yeah, he's been really good..
- 1:02Speaker 2: 81 ERA in his last seven starts. Since coming over
- 1:06Speaker 2: from the Mets, he had one little bump in the road. And,
- 1:08Speaker 2: you know, those dang guys, the Rays, they can unlock
- 1:12Speaker 2: some shit, can't they? They can unlock guys. Crazy, right?
- 1:16Speaker 1: How mad are you as a Mets fan to see
- 1:20Speaker 1: the guy that you guys trade for from Milwaukee, right?
- 1:23Speaker 1: And this isn't a straight to the Mets organization. Sometimes
- 1:26Speaker 1: guys just don't adapt right away. And then he goes
- 1:28Speaker 1: to Tampa and just starts shoving. They unlock his change-up
- 1:32Speaker 1: or his split more. He starts throwing that more, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: he's just been nasty.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he was good tonight. And he pitches.
- 1:38Speaker 2: It's funny, when I watch him pitch, it feels like
- 1:40Speaker 2: he's off. You know, it's not like pinpoint control. It's
- 1:44Speaker 2: just nasty stuff, like up and in and out of
- 1:46Speaker 2: the zone quick, up in the zone.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You know, he hit 99 in the fifth.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Hardest pitch he's ever thrown in his career.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, he was feeling good. He was feeling good. But
- 1:56Speaker 3: he's kind of that, like, effectively wild, you know, for
- 2:00Speaker 3: lack of a better term.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I don't mean that as a negative. It's just like,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know, you can't settle into one zone as a hitter.
- 2:07Speaker 2: All the stuff is filthy. Yeah, it's like he walks, guys.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah. He throws strikes. I mean, I faced him plenty
- 2:14Speaker 1: of times when he was in Milwaukee. He's nasty, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: you knew he was going to be nasty.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, he was good, man.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I mean, the Rays go out and get him at
- 2:22Speaker 1: the deadline. make a huge move for him.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Like he's, he's a frontline ace on the market and
- 2:28Speaker 1: they unlocked them. And I mean, goes out what his
- 2:32Speaker 1: last seven starts, he's had a, under a one ERA.
- 2:35Speaker 1: That's not easy. That's, that's no. So, I mean, well,
- 2:38Speaker 1: this is a scene that the, Hey, the guardians are legit.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And bro, I don't think we've given them enough credit. Right.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Because the week American league central, and they played the
- 2:50Speaker 1: white socks where it wasn't necessary. The most, um, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: popping off the chart series. But, bro, this team has grit, man.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They do not quit. Like, they're grinders. They didn't lay
- 3:02Speaker 1: down there. They were down 3-0. Stephen Kwan had a
- 3:05Speaker 1: bat there in the sixth that just, he was up 2-0. 3-0.
- 3:11Speaker 3: 3-0.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Well, I know. But he gets on the plate even more.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And I'm sure, shout out to our producer, Chris Chen,
- 3:19Speaker 1: we'll get that clipped. But the 2-0 and 3-0 pitch,
- 3:23Speaker 1: He moves even closer to the plate, not trying to
- 3:26Speaker 1: do too much, just trying to get on base, making
- 3:29Speaker 1: Kelly throw a strike. Yep. Makes him throw a strike one.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Then he takes strike two. He doesn't care about hitting
- 3:35Speaker 1: with two strikes. And then he fouls a couple pitches
- 3:37Speaker 1: off and goes the other way, and there's runners on
- 3:40Speaker 1: first and second, right? And then Chase DeLore hits the
- 3:44Speaker 1: double to put them within two. But that at-bat right there,
- 3:48Speaker 1: that's a grinder at-bat. That's bat grinding out at-bats. they're
- 3:52Speaker 1: one pitch away from tying the ball game up.
- 3:55Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 3:55Speaker 1: Joe Adele a couple of times.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Right. He's hit left. He's good. Like, yeah, you're, you're
- 4:01Speaker 3: exactly right. They are grinders.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And man, you've got to respect their bullpen, what it
- 4:05Speaker 2: continues to do. Like, you know, they come in and
- 4:07Speaker 2: just lock the game down, left them at three. They
- 4:10Speaker 2: basically gave the Rays three runs and, and were one
- 4:13Speaker 2: hit away from, from fighting back. So I agree with you.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I was thinking watching the game, like they are relentless
- 4:19Speaker 2: in the box, just.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Like you're talking about, man. You're yeah. Spot on. Spot on.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I got to give some love. Hold on.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I got to give some love to Patrick Bailey. It
- 4:28Speaker 2: is the postseason of the catchers. I just want to
- 4:30Speaker 2: say that. Like, Contreras is going on. I just need
- 4:33Speaker 2: Will Smith to get going. Will Smith's going to get
- 4:35Speaker 2: going tomorrow, and we'll be dialed in. But it's been
- 4:39Speaker 2: between Bailey and, you know, Hicks for the Rays. You know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: these guys are– these guys– Hicks with that big knock to–
- 4:50Speaker 2: Give them that two-out base hit up the middle. It's
- 4:54Speaker 2: the postseason of the catcher, bro.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right.
- 4:58Speaker 1: There's no denying it. Hey, the proof is in the pudding, right?
- 5:01Speaker 3: That's right.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But they go back tied 1-1 to Cleveland. Now Cleveland
- 5:06Speaker 1: has three games to really take care of home field advantage.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And it's not going to be an easy task for
- 5:13Speaker 1: the Rays going in there to Cleveland. That's a rowdy
- 5:16Speaker 1: fan base. It's going to be excited that their team is–
- 5:20Speaker 1: It's a whole different vibe being 1-1 than going back 2-0.
- 5:24Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And I think they're probably going to have Gavin Williams,
- 5:26Speaker 2: AL's strikeout leader, do punches out the world.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Nasty.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You know, with more of a contact group in the
- 5:32Speaker 2: Rays than was the White Sox. And Nick Martinez has
- 5:36Speaker 2: been phenomenal for the Rays this year. He's got nasty stuff.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So we've got another good matchup in two days. So
- 5:42Speaker 2: I can't wait. I can't wait for Dodgers Brewers in L.A.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Tomorrow. Bro, we've got, I mean, baseball, it doesn't end.
- 5:48Speaker 3: We just get good shit after good shit.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Rossi, who wins game three for the Guardians?
- 5:54Speaker 2: All right, game three, Rays-Guardians for my polymarket pick. Rays
- 6:00Speaker 2: are 46% to the yes, 100 gets you back 207,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and the Guardians are 54% to the yes, and 100
- 6:06Speaker 2: gets you back 180. I'm going with the money play.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I believe in Nick Martinez. The Rays are not going
- 6:13Speaker 2: to be intimidated by a loud atmosphere. They play in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the American League East in Boston, in New York.
- 6:18Speaker 3: They're not going to be phased. I am going with
- 6:20Speaker 3: the Rays.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I'd tee you up so nicely for that, huh?
- 6:25Speaker 3: You do. I'm going. It's a layup.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm going Guardians. Nice. I just.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Home field.
- 6:31Speaker 1: No, I just feel like this team has grit, man. Like,
- 6:35Speaker 1: every September, they come back. They win the division. They
- 6:38Speaker 1: beat the White Sox in five games. They were down 0-2.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I just think that the Guardians go in their home
- 6:45Speaker 1: field advantage. They take game three and they go up 2-1.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And this is the adversity that the Rays are going
- 6:51Speaker 1: to have to overcome to make it to the World Series,
- 6:53Speaker 1: be endowed 2-1.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I'm just shocked at their underdog. Like, I feel like
- 6:57Speaker 3: it's a coin flip.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Like, you know, who gets the big hit, I think,
- 7:01Speaker 2: in this series is going to continue to kind of
- 7:03Speaker 2: see how the games go.
- 7:05Speaker 3: But, you know, it's more 50-50. So if I'm a
- 7:08Speaker 3: betting man, I'm going.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm going with the Rays. Make some more money. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: love disagreeing with you.
- 7:15Speaker 2: There's something about the warm summer air and a cold
- 7:17Speaker 2: corona with Lyme that makes the roar of the crowd
- 7:20Speaker 2: sound a lot like the roar of the waves.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's because this is our playa, and the best seats
- 7:25Speaker 1: are always wherever you're sitting.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Whether it's a weeknight game under the lights or a
- 7:29Speaker 2: Sunday afternoon in the sun, you know baseball isn't about
- 7:32Speaker 2: rushing around. It's about settling in, letting the game come
- 7:35Speaker 2: to you. And nothing pairs better than an ice-cold corona.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 7:40Speaker 1: So find your seat, your Corona, and your line, because
- 7:45Speaker 1: real fans know the only thing better than nine innings
- 7:48Speaker 1: is extra innings, especially on La Playa.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Corona.
- 7:53Speaker 1: La Playa awaits.
- 7:54Speaker 2: The official cerveza of Major League Baseball. Get yours at
- 7:58Speaker 2: ordercorona.com for 21 plus, relax responsibly. Corona Extra Beer, imported
- 8:04Speaker 2: by Crown Imports, Chicago, Illinois. What's up, guys? I need
- 8:08Speaker 2: to tell you about this new prediction market called Polymarket.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's the best new way to trade in sports. In
- 8:14Speaker 2: the past, if you wanted action on the game, you'd
- 8:16Speaker 2: put some money in, and if your team was doing
- 8:18Speaker 2: well and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock the
- 8:21Speaker 2: trade and take a huge fee. But Polymarket is a
- 8:23Speaker 2: prediction market. It's a stock exchange for sports, buying in
- 8:27Speaker 2: and selling out on your terms. I've tried them all,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and Polymarket is simply the best prediction market. Better than DraftKings, FanDuel, Calshi,
- 8:35Speaker 2: you name it. They're so confident you'll never go back
- 8:38Speaker 2: to the other guys. They're giving you a free $ 25
- 8:40Speaker 2: on your first trade when you deposit just $ 10.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And now they've launched a.
- 8:44Speaker 2: New feature, Squads, a group chat where you can see
- 8:47Speaker 2: what everyone is trading. So download the Polymarket app today
- 8:51Speaker 2: and use the code ROSSRIZZO when you sign up. That's
- 8:54Speaker 2: code ROSSRIZZO and get $ 25 free after you deposit just $ 10.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Hey, how about we talked about this yesterday, but Shohei
- 9:03Speaker 1: talked to the media today about you know, feeling better,
- 9:06Speaker 1: getting to his swing in a better spot. Obviously he's
- 9:09Speaker 1: grinding through some stuff. Dave Roberts said it.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Um, and he talked to Dave and said like, no,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I feel like I'm close. You know, that's, that's what
- 9:17Speaker 2: your manager wants to hear. Like, no, I appreciate you
- 9:21Speaker 2: looking out for me and, you know, having this conversation
- 9:24Speaker 2: cause I am struggling, but I'm getting there, you know,
- 9:27Speaker 2: and you, you gotta believe in the best player in
- 9:28Speaker 2: the world.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Um, and You know, I mean, it's a no-brainer. We
- 9:33Speaker 3: were talking about it. It was a no-brainer. If the
- 9:35Speaker 3: guy wants to be in there, he's in there.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Look, Shohei's hitting a home run tomorrow, guaranteed.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Or he's going to have a big hit tomorrow. 100%
- 9:45Speaker 1: guaranteed on the record saying it. I feel like, at
- 9:48Speaker 1: least for me, whenever I was struggling bad, I would
- 9:51Speaker 1: almost want the media to come to me and make
- 9:53Speaker 1: a story out of it. So I had to talk
- 9:54Speaker 1: about it and just kind of release it. And then
- 9:57Speaker 1: for sure enough, like the next game or two, I
- 9:59Speaker 1: just went off. yeah so yeah the fact that when
- 10:02Speaker 1: it spoke to the media which he doesn't speak to
- 10:04Speaker 1: the media a lot pregame um good point bro I
- 10:08Speaker 1: just think that that's kind of watch out.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And then and then everybody the story is going to
- 10:12Speaker 2: be he's gonna get a big hit Dodgers are going
- 10:14Speaker 2: to win and the story is going to be oh
- 10:16Speaker 2: he's back and here come the Dodgers now they got
- 10:17Speaker 2: the momentum and and and Milwaukee's going to.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Have to stop that.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It's crazy how fast it can flip, right? Hey, it's
- 10:23Speaker 2: like Jose Ramirez. One day you're the hero, one day
- 10:26Speaker 2: you're the goat, man. It's baseball, and it's just part
- 10:29Speaker 2: of it. You've got to forget about it. You've got
- 10:33Speaker 2: to forget about the good and forget about the bad.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Well, the good thing with Jose is that's their guy, right?
- 10:40Speaker 1: They live and die by him. Cleveland loves him. He
- 10:44Speaker 1: gives it all for that city all the time.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Hopefully it's not like David Ross throwing one in the
- 10:50Speaker 2: crapper and almost killing his first baseman.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Hey, Kip texted me though. Kip texted me, said he
- 10:56Speaker 1: didn't think I had an Emmy to finish that marathon.
- 10:58Speaker 3: So thank you.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Thank you, Kip. I appreciated that.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Nice.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Everyone who texts me about the marathon. I'll probably talk
- 11:04Speaker 1: about it for like, at least through the world series
- 11:06Speaker 1: that I ran a marathon and then I'll have nothing
- 11:08Speaker 1: left to talk about. Cause that's every marathoner, right? I
- 11:11Speaker 1: should be wearing my medals still. You got, you should
- 11:14Speaker 1: all the way through the playoffs. That's your trophy this year.
- 11:16Speaker 1: That's your trophy. And getting to work with me every day.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That's your trophy. You're welcome.
- 11:21Speaker 1: All right. Let's get to our Tim Buss daily ball
- 11:26Speaker 1: bag questions where we take questions, the hottest questions from
- 11:29Speaker 1: our fans. You can email us at rossandrizzo at gmail.com.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Leave some comments on YouTube or via our socials. We
- 11:37Speaker 1: love the interactions. We love hearing from you. I feel
- 11:39Speaker 1: like Chris Tran, our producers, finding the best questions every night.
- 11:44Speaker 1: They're getting better and better. First one is an email
- 11:48Speaker 1: from Justin Gale. First off, before we get into this,
- 11:52Speaker 1: did you see, not an ad, wish it was, Payday.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I guess it was an ad. The low-key legend for
- 11:59Speaker 1: Danny Mueller.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Danny Mueller. I saw Danny on there.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Dude, Payday did such a good job on their marketing
- 12:08Speaker 1: campaign of honoring the low-key legends of the game. If
- 12:11Speaker 1: you haven't seen it, it's me, Nick Swisher. and Ryan Howard,
- 12:15Speaker 1: and they asked us who are guys behind the scenes
- 12:19Speaker 1: in baseball that take care of you that no one
- 12:21Speaker 1: gets recognition for. And Payday did a whole story on
- 12:24Speaker 1: them as their marketing campaign. It's awesome. You should go
- 12:26Speaker 1: check it out. They're not an ad for our podcast.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Wish it was. Wish it was. Shout out, Bob.
- 12:33Speaker 1: But anyways, first email from Justin Gale. What were a
- 12:37Speaker 1: few key moments of the marathon?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:40Speaker 1: When you had to dig deepest mentally and physically, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: what strategies did you use throughout the race to pace
- 12:46Speaker 1: yourself and get to the finish line in good shape? Well, Justin,
- 12:50Speaker 1: I did not get to the finish line in good shape.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Everything I've read... But you got there. But you got there.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That's a good point. Everything you read, you're supposed to
- 12:59Speaker 1: do negative splits, which means you run slower the first half,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and then you finish faster. Nah, wasn't happening for this
- 13:07Speaker 1: big guy. I tried it during all my training runs.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Never was able to do it. So I just went out, ran,
- 13:14Speaker 1: good pace. Honestly, that mile 18 wall that everyone talks
- 13:19Speaker 1: about is real, but at mile 22, I was really questioning. Like,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I was in hell. Like, I'm not kidding. Like, now
- 13:28Speaker 1: that I have a few days to process it, my
- 13:29Speaker 1: brain is back to, like, being scattered. I don't, like,
- 13:33Speaker 1: my brother stayed with me the entire time, and I
- 13:36Speaker 1: don't think, like, I kind of got emotional thinking about it.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Like my big brother was there. Like he was there
- 13:41Speaker 1: my whole life.
- 13:41Speaker 3: He's in all the pictures. Yeah. Right.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And it was, it's just so cool looking back like
- 13:47Speaker 1: a few days later, knowing like he trained, like we
- 13:51Speaker 1: talked all the time training, like, what are we doing?
- 13:54Speaker 1: This is, this is awful. So hard. Right. But the
- 13:58Speaker 1: fact that we crossed together, uh, you had to dig deep.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Like you just, the fans, the spectators really helped me
- 14:05Speaker 1: get through it. I mean, bro, It was just like,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I'd be at one point, I was running for 30
- 14:14Speaker 1: seconds and walking for 30 seconds at a time. I
- 14:17Speaker 1: couldn't run more than 30 seconds. I couldn't run more
- 14:20Speaker 1: than two minutes at a time at one point because
- 14:23Speaker 1: I'd start cramping everywhere. And I never cramp during training.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I never cramp ever. So we'd be running, my brother's like,
- 14:29Speaker 1: all right, let's get to that light. I'm like, all right,
- 14:30Speaker 1: let's go.
- 14:31Speaker 3: I'm juiced, ready?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Running, cramp, just start walking.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Bro, this is a whole segment on itself, bro. This
- 14:41Speaker 3: is crazy. Yeah. So what, so what did you do?
- 14:44Speaker 3: What the lady said? Like, like, how did you, is
- 14:46Speaker 3: it your, your, did your brother say, I just kept walking.
- 14:49Speaker 3: I just kept walking. Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And my brother and your, and your playlist was out
- 14:52Speaker 2: the window. Cause it out the window.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yeah. So I was, it was just, you dug deep.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And then at mile 24 there that we did the
- 15:00Speaker 1: keg stand, which was, I mean, we looked at it
- 15:03Speaker 1: and I was like, look, if I, I'm cramping ever.
- 15:05Speaker 1: If I drink beer right now, my body might go
- 15:07Speaker 1: into shock. And I was like, fuck it.
- 15:11Speaker 3: So how heavy were you to lift up your dead
- 15:14Speaker 3: ass body? So for those.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Guys soaking wet, I saw them pick you out. I'm like,
- 15:19Speaker 2: that's no light feet right there, bro.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But man, honestly, the best part was all the signs.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Like there was, you said everybody was screaming your name.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Everyone, bro. It was crazy.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And then, and then Emily told me, she was way
- 15:33Speaker 1: ahead of me. She was like, she was running and
- 15:35Speaker 1: they were all, all the MCs were like, Rizzo's coming
- 15:38Speaker 1: through soon. Yada, yada, yada. Like they heard it on
- 15:40Speaker 1: their run. And Arietta said he, how much he heard
- 15:43Speaker 1: him being called. But bro, there was a, there was
- 15:47Speaker 1: one sign and this is so bad, but probably the
- 15:49Speaker 1: one that made me laugh most. And I'm sorry to
- 15:52Speaker 1: all the Chicago fans. It was a picture of Gavin
- 15:55Speaker 1: or Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the bears when he
- 15:58Speaker 1: got hurt. And it said, how do your hamstrings feel?
- 16:03Speaker 3: Oh, man. I was like, that's tough.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's tough.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Guys catching strays at a marathon for everybody.
- 16:12Speaker 1: They're leaving their home city.
- 16:15Speaker 2: What would you say in your head? When you're the darkest,
- 16:17Speaker 2: what would you just put one foot in front of
- 16:19Speaker 2: the other? What would you say to yourself? What were
- 16:22Speaker 2: the mental battles in your brain that you were having
- 16:26Speaker 2: to fight?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Honestly, you can go through mile through mile. I think
- 16:31Speaker 1: mile 15, there was a bunch of um nuns with
- 16:34Speaker 1: a pope leo so i just did the sign of
- 16:36Speaker 1: the cross said a prayer like get me through this
- 16:40Speaker 1: um just keep going like i just wanted to keep
- 16:42Speaker 1: walking and running like i didn't want to stop right
- 16:46Speaker 1: and obviously walking isn't running but just keep going and
- 16:50Speaker 1: there's no choice there was no there was no alternate
- 16:53Speaker 1: there was no stopping.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Everybody there's watching you and you've been planning for this
- 16:57Speaker 2: you got a whole finish line full of people your
- 16:59Speaker 2: son your son across the finish line yeah Yeah. I,
- 17:03Speaker 2: at one point I was like, just, I just want
- 17:05Speaker 2: my son.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I like, I'm just yelling at my brother. So a
- 17:08Speaker 1: lot of stories. There was a, there was a, there
- 17:11Speaker 1: was a lady holding a pit bull and the sign
- 17:14Speaker 1: said pit stop and everyone was petting the pit bull.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And that made me smile. That was around mile 23,
- 17:19Speaker 1: 24 too. That made me smile. All the signs really
- 17:23Speaker 1: very awesome.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Hey, Justin Gale. Good job. Getting all that stories out.
- 17:28Speaker 3: That was a great question. I loved hearing that. That's
- 17:31Speaker 3: the first time I heard that. Good stuff. Next email
- 17:34Speaker 3: is from Jerry O'Keefe.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Over the years, I've occasionally heard the front office talk
- 17:37Speaker 2: about how the wind at Wrigley is a disadvantage to
- 17:41Speaker 2: the club over the course of a season. But I
- 17:44Speaker 2: never heard this when the team is winning. I've also
- 17:46Speaker 2: always felt that game to game, both teams are playing
- 17:49Speaker 2: in the same weather anyway. What are your thoughts on
- 17:53Speaker 2: having played.
- 17:54Speaker 3: And managed there?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Go ahead, Ross. You managed there.
- 17:59Speaker 3: The wind's a factor. You take a good analytical. The
- 18:01Speaker 3: wind's a factor. The wind's a factor.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I think that's why at Wrigley, specifically, you need to
- 18:07Speaker 2: be able to do the things that we're seeing in
- 18:09Speaker 2: the postseason right now. There's going to be days where
- 18:12Speaker 2: you have to manufacture some runs, and the wind blowing
- 18:17Speaker 2: in is a lot of those days. You're going to
- 18:19Speaker 2: have to lead off double early in the game. It's
- 18:22Speaker 2: important to get that runner over and in, however you
- 18:24Speaker 2: want to do it. If you want to bunt, The
- 18:25Speaker 2: guy gives himself up and hits a ground ball to
- 18:28Speaker 2: the right side, trying to get him over and in.
- 18:30Speaker 2: But if you're playing for the homer and the 3-1
- 18:31Speaker 2: homer on days when the wind's blowing in, you're at
- 18:34Speaker 2: a big disadvantage.
- 18:36Speaker 3: That's what I would say. That's my manager brain.
- 18:39Speaker 1: The wind at Wrigley is something that I think the
- 18:46Speaker 1: mainstream media and baseball now is getting a hold of
- 18:49Speaker 1: more than it was maybe years ago. It can play
- 18:53Speaker 1: as one of the biggest parks in baseball on any
- 18:56Speaker 1: given day.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Which is so fun.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Or it can feel like you're at the Little League
- 19:02Speaker 1: World Series watching the Little Leaguers play. That's how small
- 19:05Speaker 1: the field can get when the wind's blowing out.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I remember you saying to me, I don't know if
- 19:10Speaker 2: it was in 15 or 16, but you had like,
- 19:15Speaker 2: I don't know, the first two, three months early on
- 19:17Speaker 2: in the season, you had like 12 homers or something.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I don't know at what point in the season it
- 19:21Speaker 2: was in, but you were just shocked. I remember being
- 19:23Speaker 2: so happy. Like, I've never had as many homers this
- 19:26Speaker 2: early because the wind's always blowing in early, and it
- 19:28Speaker 2: doesn't turn to like August. You know, late July, August
- 19:31Speaker 2: is when the wind starts. It feels like it starts
- 19:32Speaker 2: blowing out in your career at Wrigley. I don't know
- 19:34Speaker 2: what the stats would say long-term, but I remember you
- 19:38Speaker 2: saying that to me either my first or second year there.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:42Speaker 1: No, no, it's Wrigley– Wrigley for a player when you're
- 19:47Speaker 1: playing there gets harder every year psychologically. because every single
- 19:53Speaker 1: hitter that comes back, just listen to the interviews. Like
- 19:57Speaker 1: anyone who's listening to this, any former player that comes
- 19:59Speaker 1: back to Wrigley that's at Wrigley Field, the first thing
- 20:03Speaker 1: they'll say in that interview is what the wind's doing.
- 20:05Speaker 1: That's how much of an effect the wind has there.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You wake up in the morning, Before you even brush
- 20:10Speaker 1: your teeth, I'm looking out the window to see what
- 20:13Speaker 1: the lake's doing, what the specific flag on the Michigan
- 20:16Speaker 1: Avenue bridge is doing, right? If it's blowing one way
- 20:20Speaker 1: or another to know, oh, it could be a good
- 20:21Speaker 1: day or going to have to shorten up and BP today.
- 20:25Speaker 3: You know? Two-strike approach early. Exactly.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So it definitely plays a factor. You have to, like
- 20:34Speaker 1: you said, Ross, you have to have a fully complete
- 20:38Speaker 1: team that can– hit the long ball, and also put
- 20:40Speaker 1: the ball in play when they need to. So it
- 20:42Speaker 1: is a huge factor. I felt like as I played
- 20:47Speaker 1: there longer and longer, it just became more of a
- 20:48Speaker 1: psych battle, but it was what it was. I remember
- 20:51Speaker 1: we were playing the Dodgers in 17 early. It was
- 20:56Speaker 1: our trophy presentation. You weren't there, or you had to
- 20:58Speaker 1: be there. We were getting our rings. And I looked up.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I might have been dancing. I might have been dancing.
- 21:05Speaker 1: They were playing me. Well, this is multiple times I
- 21:07Speaker 1: would look up, and they had the full shift They
- 21:09Speaker 1: had a roving nickel back in right field. The third
- 21:12Speaker 1: baseman is shortstop and short right. And I look up,
- 21:15Speaker 1: the wind's howling in, and I'm just like, how the
- 21:18Speaker 1: fuck am I going to get a hit?
- 21:20Speaker 2: Right?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Like, where is my hit? If I hit the ball
- 21:22Speaker 1: in the air, it's an out. If I hit the
- 21:23Speaker 1: ball on the ground, they got that whole side covered. So, oh,
- 21:26Speaker 1: just hit it to third base where no one's standing. Okay,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I'll just try to do that. So that's the mind games.
- 21:33Speaker 1: It's that easy.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Good question, Jerry. Great question. All right, last one.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Email from Jeffrey Malone. My question is for Rizzo. I
- 21:43Speaker 1: always appreciated your ability to have fun in everything you do.
- 21:46Speaker 1: How do you keep it light even in moments that
- 21:48Speaker 1: are high pressure?
- 21:50Speaker 3: You're really good at this. Great, great observation, Jeffrey.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Thank you, Jeffrey. I think that just comes with understanding
- 21:59Speaker 1: the environment we're in, how much goes into it, how
- 22:02Speaker 1: much preparation, where... you got to keep light of it.
- 22:07Speaker 1: You have to have understanding of what you're doing and
- 22:09Speaker 1: keep it in perspective. For me, perspective is everything. No
- 22:12Speaker 1: matter how much the, the going gets tough, we're playing baseball.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And when, when it's going good too, you could still
- 22:20Speaker 1: joke around, but when you're going bad, it's like, you
- 22:22Speaker 1: got to be the same person all the time. And
- 22:25Speaker 1: that's what I always try to do. Good, bad, or indifferent.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I always try to come in every single day and
- 22:30Speaker 1: treat players like they're the best player in the world
- 22:33Speaker 1: because I, I remember when I was a young player,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I maybe felt like it was my identity if I
- 22:40Speaker 1: did good or bad. And I learned quickly, like, look,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I'm trying the hardest I can do. And I know
- 22:46Speaker 1: other guys are. And I remember being a young player
- 22:49Speaker 1: and feeling like maybe the staff treated you a little
- 22:53Speaker 1: bit differently. Look, when you're playing good, everyone likes you more.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Everyone.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It's facts. You can get away with murder. You're The
- 23:01Speaker 1: coaches like you more. The front office likes you more.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Your parents love you more. That's probably a stretch. Your friends, right?
- 23:07Speaker 1: But when you're playing bad, it's the real ones. So
- 23:10Speaker 1: I always took, as I got older in my career,
- 23:12Speaker 1: if anyone was playing bad, I made sure to talk
- 23:15Speaker 1: to them all the time about just life. Just pretend
- 23:20Speaker 1: like you're the best player in the world that you are.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I would never tell them that. And that's just always
- 23:25Speaker 1: having a good time.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Let me tell you something. Two things that I know
- 23:29Speaker 3: about you.
- 23:30Speaker 2: One, you beat cancer and you've got a really good
- 23:32Speaker 2: outlook on life because of that. And two, your dad,
- 23:36Speaker 2: if anybody knows your dad, that guy is a freaking best.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And the way he lives his life is a direct
- 23:44Speaker 2: reflection of how you go about your day and the
- 23:47Speaker 2: people you're around. So he gets it honest from his parents.
- 23:50Speaker 2: As we say in the South, he gets it honest
- 23:52Speaker 2: from his dad.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Well, my mom's New Year's resolution every single year is
- 23:56Speaker 1: to live it up. So if you just live in
- 23:59Speaker 1: the moment, you know what I mean?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 3: So good stuff. Good stuff. Good stuff, bro. That may
- 24:03Speaker 3: be my favorite show we had. I love those stories.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Uh, yeah, it was great.
- 24:08Speaker 3: I love that.
- 24:08Speaker 1: The, the, the Tim bus ball bags are the best
- 24:11Speaker 1: there is. I loved it. We love answering these questions.
