- 0:40Speaker 1: So we are all on the same page five Minute Friday,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I offer up a story from my week, a little
- 0:46Speaker 1: thought prompt to send you into the weekend new to
- 0:50Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. I'm now going to be answering one
- 0:53Speaker 1: listener question a week here, So if you've got something
- 0:57Speaker 1: that's on your mind that you want to know, feel
- 0:59Speaker 1: free to shoot me those over dm over at Hurdle
- 1:03Speaker 1: Podcasts or at Emily a Body. And then I share
- 1:06Speaker 1: my content picks of the week, my highlights of the week,
- 1:09Speaker 1: things that I am digging that I think that you
- 1:12Speaker 1: should check out, and links to everything that gets mentioned
- 1:15Speaker 1: here always can be found in the show notes to
- 1:20Speaker 1: this episode. So if you have been following along on
- 1:26Speaker 1: social media, then you know that last week I ran
- 1:30Speaker 1: a mile time trial and I went into it with
- 1:33Speaker 1: a goal of running a sub six minute mile. To
- 1:37Speaker 1: hear exactly about how all of that went. Feel free
- 1:40Speaker 1: to click back over to your main feed wherever you
- 1:42Speaker 1: are listening to your podcasts and listen to this week's
- 1:46Speaker 1: episode of Hurdle Moment, in which I talk about running
- 1:50Speaker 1: that five fifty six mile.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It still it still doesn't feel real.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But what I really want to talk about in reference
- 1:58Speaker 1: to that day for five Minute Friday this week has
- 2:01Speaker 1: nothing to do with the mile itself, but actually about
- 2:07Speaker 1: how over the top loved and appreciated I felt leading
- 2:10Speaker 1: up to it, and during it and after it on
- 2:13Speaker 1: a week by week basis. Here with Hurdle, I am
- 2:18Speaker 1: constantly giving as much as possible as I can to
- 2:21Speaker 1: this community. It means the world to me, and that's
- 2:24Speaker 1: just kind of who I am. It definitely definitely carries
- 2:28Speaker 1: over to my real relationships with my friends and my
- 2:31Speaker 1: family because giving and acts of service, so to speak,
- 2:35Speaker 1: that is how I show the people that I care,
- 2:37Speaker 1: that I care about them. And it's been an interesting
- 2:41Speaker 1: year to be such a giver because so much time
- 2:47Speaker 1: spent alone in this apartment, I kept feeling like my
- 2:53Speaker 1: cup was empty, Like I was sitting here and I
- 2:56Speaker 1: was wondering, when is this going to come back to me?
- 2:59Speaker 1: When is someone gonna just like, come take care of me,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and I'm not really a big woe is me human?
- 3:07Speaker 1: And because I'm not a big woe is me human,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I knew that I needed to take matters into my
- 3:12Speaker 1: own hands to both stave off potential disappointment and also
- 3:18Speaker 1: just take care of myself.
- 3:20Speaker 2: With time.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Over the past seven months or so, I've come to
- 3:23Speaker 1: depend less on external sources for comfort and validation, which definitely, definitely,
- 3:31Speaker 1: definitely has not been easy. I mean, there have definitely
- 3:35Speaker 1: been tears involved. It has been hard, like physically hurting
- 3:38Speaker 1: in my gut when you're looking for someone to comfort you,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but you know that like you can find this on
- 3:44Speaker 1: your own. And it's just been tough. But through the work,
- 3:48Speaker 1: which has included like a lot of reading and a
- 3:51Speaker 1: lot of journaling and a lot of listening to podcasts
- 3:54Speaker 1: and a lot of having conversations with people that I
- 3:59Speaker 1: really trust and can and fight in. Like, through all
- 4:02Speaker 1: of this work, what I have come to find and
- 4:04Speaker 1: gain is that I am living with less expectation now
- 4:10Speaker 1: and really coming from a place of gratitude period. It's
- 4:15Speaker 1: a shift that has really enabled me truly to fully
- 4:19Speaker 1: fully appreciate in any sense when someone shows up for
- 4:23Speaker 1: me at all, which I feel like can be seen
- 4:27Speaker 1: as a little bit of a letdown. Maybe that voice
- 4:33Speaker 1: inclination is very clear that I'm unsure of how to
- 4:36Speaker 1: paint this picture. What I'm trying to say is that
- 4:39Speaker 1: I feel as though it's been a good thing because
- 4:41Speaker 1: I feel as though I am just so grateful for
- 4:43Speaker 1: what it is that I do have in my life
- 4:45Speaker 1: right now instead of focusing on the things that I
- 4:47Speaker 1: am without. And so Friday was one of those days
- 4:52Speaker 1: where I was just blown away by what I do
- 4:56Speaker 1: have in my life. And it's even better because the
- 5:00Speaker 1: mile for me was first and foremost about me showing
- 5:02Speaker 1: up for myself, me prioritizing my goals, doing the things
- 5:06Speaker 1: that I want to do, taking like a fair amount
- 5:09Speaker 1: of opportunity cost to make it happen, and like the
- 5:13Speaker 1: mile of course athletically was the culmination of a lot
- 5:16Speaker 1: of effort and work, but also for me emotionally, it
- 5:23Speaker 1: was the culmination of a lot of effort and personal work.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And the mile for me was me being able to
- 5:31Speaker 1: witness what happens when I take the time to invest
- 5:34Speaker 1: and focus on myself.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So the fact.
- 5:37Speaker 1: That that good feeling was coupled with like what felt
- 5:41Speaker 1: as though things kind of falling into place with how
- 5:43Speaker 1: they should be in my relationships, and watching people show
- 5:48Speaker 1: up for me because they knew how important this was
- 5:50Speaker 1: for me, and for me not to expect that to
- 5:53Speaker 1: happen but instead be so just overwhelmed in the best
- 5:57Speaker 1: way possible by feeling so loved it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: It's hard to put into words.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The event for me that day triggered more meaningful conversations
- 6:10Speaker 1: with some people in my life, some of which I've
- 6:13Speaker 1: been talking to regularly in twenty twenty, some who I
- 6:16Speaker 1: have not.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I mean, I'm literally.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Saying that this day prompted more positive interactions for me
- 6:25Speaker 1: than like my birthday in June, and I was thinking
- 6:29Speaker 1: a lot about this. I went after the mile with
- 6:31Speaker 1: two girlfriends of mine to like this cute cafe on
- 6:35Speaker 1: Clinton Street in the Lower East Side, and we are
- 6:37Speaker 1: sitting there and I was sipping coffee, and I was
- 6:39Speaker 1: talking all about this and getting really emotional, because when
- 6:46Speaker 1: you get to a place where you stop expecting people
- 6:49Speaker 1: to show up for you, and then people show up
- 6:51Speaker 1: for you, it's it's awesome.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's so awesome.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And I just felt so unbelievably and awesomely connected to
- 7:05Speaker 1: myself and my goals, but also to the people that
- 7:08Speaker 1: I care about. In a year that has just been
- 7:11Speaker 1: so full of change and shifts, people coming and going
- 7:17Speaker 1: like Friday felt like a genuine gift.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And it made my cup feel really full.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I prompt for you this week, when was the last
- 7:29Speaker 1: time you made it a point to show up for
- 7:31Speaker 1: someone you care about? Again, when was the last time
- 7:36Speaker 1: you made a point to show up for someone you
- 7:40Speaker 1: care about? Before I share the question of the week
- 7:43Speaker 1: and the highlights of the week, I do want to
- 7:45Speaker 1: shout out this week's sponsor, Green Chef, a USDA certified
- 7:51Speaker 1: organic company that makes eating well easy and affordable with
- 7:55Speaker 1: plans to fit every kind of lifestyle. They've got a
- 7:59Speaker 1: ton of meal including vegan, vegetarian, paleo and keto, and
- 8:04Speaker 1: the recipes they're quick and easy to follow with step
- 8:07Speaker 1: by step instructions chef tips and this is what I
- 8:11Speaker 1: think is the most key component of all photos to
- 8:14Speaker 1: guide you along. I needed to be super simple. I
- 8:18Speaker 1: have been leaning into their vegetarian their plant powered plan,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and this week on the menu it is Bananas So Good,
- 8:26Speaker 1: Butternut squash, chili, French onion veggie meltz and Teriaki Portobello
- 8:32Speaker 1: rice bowls. I cannot stress this enough. This stuff is delicious.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And I don't know about you guys, but I feel
- 8:39Speaker 1: like it's so nice to have something to look forward
- 8:43Speaker 1: to doing at the end of your workday. You know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: it's my way personally cooking to calm down. Why not
- 8:49Speaker 1: lean into a service like green Chef that does the
- 8:53Speaker 1: meal planning and the grocery shopping for you. It just
- 8:55Speaker 1: feels like a no brainer, especially also hot Tip play
- 9:01Speaker 1: some Billie Joel Pandora.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:03Speaker 1: For me, it feels like I'm back at my parents' house,
- 9:06Speaker 1: growing up in the kitchen, relaxing and having a good time.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Head on over to greenchef dot com slash hurdle eighty
- 9:15Speaker 1: and use the code hurdle eighty to get eighty dollars
- 9:17Speaker 1: off across four boxes, including free shipping on your first box. Again,
- 9:22Speaker 1: that is g R E E N C h e
- 9:26Speaker 1: f dot com slash hurdle eight zero and use the
- 9:30Speaker 1: code hurdle eighty to get eighty dollars off across four boxes,
- 9:33Speaker 1: including free shipping on your first box. Question of the week,
- 9:40Speaker 1: let's see what we got here. If you had to
- 9:42Speaker 1: choose one sneaker for your runs, what would it be?
- 9:46Speaker 1: This one actually came in from a few different people,
- 9:48Speaker 1: so thank you for this one. You know, that's a
- 9:51Speaker 1: hard question to answer, As you know, I've got a
- 9:52Speaker 1: ton of sneakers. If I had to choose one that
- 9:56Speaker 1: I would lean into for like both every day running
- 9:59Speaker 1: tempo running track workouts, I'd probably have to go Nike
- 10:06Speaker 1: Pegas's thirty seven. I've been using the peg a lot
- 10:10Speaker 1: more this year, and especially I really like the thirty
- 10:14Speaker 1: seven more than their last iteration the thirty six.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And I would say the only.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Time I might change this answer is in my long
- 10:22Speaker 1: run when I'm looking for just a little bit more
- 10:24Speaker 1: cushion throughout the whole shoe. So for the long run,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I would go either Nike Vomero or New Balance ten
- 10:34Speaker 1: to eighty or I've really been loving on the Sokany
- 10:37Speaker 1: and doorphin pro this year. Highlights of the week and
- 10:41Speaker 1: again a links to all of this goodness in the
- 10:44Speaker 1: show notes. First off, check out Pizza to the polls
- 10:47Speaker 1: is a thing I wish I was the person that
- 10:50Speaker 1: made this up. There's literally a website that you can
- 10:53Speaker 1: go to and send a pizza to individuals waiting in
- 10:57Speaker 1: line to vote.
- 10:58Speaker 2: It's brilliant.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Next listen Born or Made by my good friend Michael Cherannell.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I'm chatting with Chernell this week on his podcast called
- 11:07Speaker 1: Born or Made, and we're talking all about the nitty gritty,
- 11:11Speaker 1: really digging in to my upbringing and really digging in
- 11:15Speaker 1: to my personal weight loss journey. I get a lot
- 11:18Speaker 1: of messages about this on the regular, asking me about particulars,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and we dive into a lot of those particulars in
- 11:25Speaker 1: this episode. I think it's a really great and valuable conversation,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and I hope that you guys like it as well.
- 11:30Speaker 1: He's also had a lot of really awesome, awesome guests
- 11:34Speaker 1: on the pod. I would suggest, outside of this week's episode,
- 11:37Speaker 1: listen to my good friend Nick Dio.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You will love it.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Next up by Make America Green Again baseball hat from
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Sierra Club.
- 11:48Speaker 2: This is also great.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I mean, make America Green again, it's the least controversial
- 11:53Speaker 1: thing there is. And on over to support of the
- 11:57Speaker 1: Sierra Club's work advancing climate solutions, fighting for clean air
- 12:00Speaker 1: and water, and keeping our wild places wild by snagging
- 12:05Speaker 1: yourself one of these great hats last but not leased
