- 1:49Speaker 4: what do you do you We are back at it today.
- 1:53Speaker 4: It is back to work for some people today, state government,
- 1:56Speaker 4: city workers. Most of those back well, I'll say summer
- 2:00Speaker 4: on the job, because you're going to find a lot
- 2:01Speaker 4: of people still aren't working today because many people took
- 2:04Speaker 4: off time for the Christmas break or into the even
- 2:09Speaker 4: into the new year, so you know, just know that, Yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 4: the government offices, if you have any business to do,
- 2:15Speaker 4: are open, but they may be a little short staff.
- 2:18Speaker 4: So a lot of folks are going to be short
- 2:19Speaker 4: staffed over the next week or so until we get
- 2:22Speaker 4: back to normal, which I guess whatever normal is is
- 2:24Speaker 4: probably going to be probably sometime January sixth or so
- 2:27Speaker 4: on that Monday. On today's show, We're going to be
- 2:30Speaker 4: joined a little bit later on by Knawa County commission
- 2:31Speaker 4: President Lance Wheeler. A little review of the year that
- 2:35Speaker 4: was twenty twenty four in Kanawha County and a preview
- 2:38Speaker 4: of twenty twenty five. Some exciting things to talk about
- 2:41Speaker 4: with commission President wheel And as always, whether I have
- 2:44Speaker 4: commission President Wheeler on Commissioner Selango or Mark Slotnik, who
- 2:49Speaker 4: is in that role for now until Natalie Tenant officially
- 2:52Speaker 4: takes over in the new year. Always open for phone calls,
- 2:55Speaker 4: always hoping for text. So if you got any questions
- 2:57Speaker 4: or comments for this time, I recommissioned President Wheeler. He's
- 3:01Speaker 4: always good about taking your phone calls with concerns or
- 3:05Speaker 4: praise or not so praiseworthy. Whatever you got, Lance will
- 3:09Speaker 4: take it coming up a little bit later on the show.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Also on the show, a little bit later on West
- 3:14Speaker 4: Virginia Broadcasting Legend, Speedy Bevans is going to join us.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I don't know whether you know this or not. And
- 3:20Speaker 4: Speedy and I talk pretty much every morning. He pointed
- 3:24Speaker 4: this out to me that with twenty twenty five coming
- 3:28Speaker 4: in next week, we are now a quarter of a
- 3:31Speaker 4: way into the twenty first century. Remember all the hooplah
- 3:35Speaker 4: and back in two thousand y two K and so
- 3:37Speaker 4: on and so forth. So we're gonna spend a little
- 3:40Speaker 4: time talking to Speedy about that. He's got some interesting
- 3:43Speaker 4: He always has interesting ideas on stuff. Some of them
- 3:46Speaker 4: are a little crazy from time to time, but that's okay.
- 3:48Speaker 4: He's my boss for twenty years, so I can say that.
- 3:50Speaker 4: But he's going to join us a little bit later
- 3:51Speaker 4: on the show. I do want to say this. I
- 3:53Speaker 4: originally had meteorologist Brian Hughes schedule for the show today
- 3:58Speaker 4: to provide a little winter wet their preview. However, as
- 4:02Speaker 4: they said on the RADI Bunch, something suddenly came up
- 4:05Speaker 4: and we're gonna have to reschedule him for another time.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I will say this though about mister Hughes. Long before
- 4:12Speaker 4: his weather man days, he was a radio guy and
- 4:15Speaker 4: for a couple of days this week he is going
- 4:19Speaker 4: to be guest hosting the Eighties Lunch that we do
- 4:22Speaker 4: on our sister station, V one hundred, So noe Brian
- 4:25Speaker 4: Hughes on the show today. We will get him on
- 4:27Speaker 4: in the near future, but again the next couple of
- 4:30Speaker 4: days you can catch him on V one hundred. Also
- 4:33Speaker 4: want to say thank you for all of the positive
- 4:35Speaker 4: feedback that we got on the annual Jewish Christmas Spectacular
- 4:40Speaker 4: that we did on Christmas Eve. If you missed it
- 4:43Speaker 4: and you like to catch it again, It's available various
- 4:45Speaker 4: locations as all of the shows are on the website
- 4:48Speaker 4: WCCHS network dot com. It's posted on all my social
- 4:51Speaker 4: media pages Dave Alan Radio on Facebook and at Dave
- 4:54Speaker 4: a seventy on x You can catch it on the
- 4:56Speaker 4: WCCHS network social media pages as well. However, you get
- 5:00Speaker 4: your podcast, go back and uh and give it to
- 5:02Speaker 4: a listen if you if you get time, because we
- 5:06Speaker 4: have a lot of fun with that show. You know.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I bring in Mike Pushkin, who is an accomplished musician,
- 5:11Speaker 4: and he brought Elisha in with him, who is a
- 5:14Speaker 4: fantastic violinist. Just a little Christmas music. We had Tony
- 5:17Speaker 4: the Taylor on the show Dale Cooper while was producing
- 5:20Speaker 4: the show that day. He spent some time on the
- 5:22Speaker 4: air with us as well. Rich Lindsay Judge Rich Lindsay
- 5:26Speaker 4: actually sponsored the show, so appreciate Rich being on it.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And Brian Hughes was on the show on Tuesday as well.
- 5:32Speaker 4: So if you didn't hear it and you'd like to
- 5:33Speaker 4: go back, and if you're not done with a holiday
- 5:36Speaker 4: cheer yet, go back and listen to it. It's available
- 5:39Speaker 4: at all of the places that I mentioned before, but
- 5:42Speaker 4: Dave Alan showing five Vidiye Live is bright to you
- 5:43Speaker 4: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds,
- 5:46Speaker 4: the Soelango lull Light. The Night is backup and running tonight.
- 5:50Speaker 4: They took last night off I understand, but that they
- 5:52Speaker 4: are back up and running through the through New Year's
- 5:54Speaker 4: Night over at Gomart Ballpark. If you're planning on going though,
- 5:57Speaker 4: get your tickets in advanced. Blightthnight dot com is the
- 6:02Speaker 4: website to get your tickets Dbatlightthnight dot com. I want
- 6:06Speaker 4: to throw this out there just briefly before we get
- 6:09Speaker 4: to Kanan County commissioned President Lance Wheeler. I was listening
- 6:13Speaker 4: last hour and Tom Payton does a great job. He
- 6:16Speaker 4: and his dad on asked the lawyer. We do it
- 6:18Speaker 4: every Thursday morning at each twenty. Dale Cooper hosted today
- 6:22Speaker 4: and Tom actually touched on this and it was after
- 6:27Speaker 4: someone called or someone Yeah, it actually was a phone call.
- 6:31Speaker 4: It wasn't a text. It was a phone calls to
- 6:32Speaker 4: the show. And we had some texts about this on
- 6:34Speaker 4: Monday's show today. And it has to do with President
- 6:40Speaker 4: Byite commuting the death sentences of several people, including Marshall
- 6:46Speaker 4: University student Samantha Burns. Now you all remember that horrific story.
- 6:51Speaker 4: And as I read the text on the air on
- 6:55Speaker 4: Monday's show, not on Tuesday. We didn't do anything serious,
- 6:58Speaker 4: you know, we just kind of kept a Christmas related
- 6:59Speaker 4: on TUESDA. But on Monday show I read the text
- 7:01Speaker 4: on the air and it was pointed out by several
- 7:04Speaker 4: textures and I read those texts. But maybe we didn't
- 7:08Speaker 4: do a good enough job of explaining it and what
- 7:12Speaker 4: is going on here? And maybe I didn't make it
- 7:14Speaker 4: clear and I didn't set it up properly whatever is.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And regardless of how you feel about the commuting of
- 7:23Speaker 4: several of these cases, and there were a bunch of
- 7:25Speaker 4: them by President Biden before President Trump takes back over,
- 7:29Speaker 4: if you will, the Oval Office, it needs to be
- 7:32Speaker 4: said that President Biden is not pardoning these people and
- 7:38Speaker 4: in effect setting them free. Far from it. They are
- 7:43Speaker 4: still going to write in prison. And I say that,
- 7:48Speaker 4: you know, maybe I should laugh about somebody writing in prison,
- 7:50Speaker 4: but you know, sometimes I don't really care. But yeah,
- 7:55Speaker 4: they're still going to write in prison. Okay, They're not
- 7:58Speaker 4: being released or anything of that nature. And I just
- 8:01Speaker 4: wanted to throw that out there because I think maybe
- 8:04Speaker 4: sometimes there was a little confusion over that, and maybe
- 8:06Speaker 4: I didn't do a good enough job when I was
- 8:08Speaker 4: talking about this story. But they are not being released,
- 8:11Speaker 4: they are not being pardoned. They're just not going to
- 8:13Speaker 4: be by what the actions of President Biden took. They're
- 8:18Speaker 4: just not going to be put to death. And and
- 8:23Speaker 4: you know, you can weigh in and you can argue
- 8:25Speaker 4: with me, or you can agree with me, whatever you
- 8:27Speaker 4: choose to do. I don't have a problem with that,
- 8:31Speaker 4: And I'll tell you why I don't have a problem
- 8:33Speaker 4: with it. I don't have a problem with it because
- 8:35Speaker 4: I think that for some of these more horrific crimes,
- 8:37Speaker 4: the death penalty if it indeed happens, which the majority
- 8:40Speaker 4: of the time it doesn't, I think that the death
- 8:43Speaker 4: penalty may be too good for some of these people.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I would prefer to see them rot in prison. And
- 8:52Speaker 4: I kind of liked, and I'm kind of paraphrasing what
- 8:54Speaker 4: Tom Payton talked about last hour. You know, it gives
- 8:56Speaker 4: you an opportunity to learn when they're in prison, what
- 8:59Speaker 4: goes on in their minds, What is it that makes
- 9:03Speaker 4: people become the animals that some humans do become at times.
- 9:11Speaker 4: So I wanted to make sure that people realize that.
- 9:13Speaker 4: And there's been a lot of back and forth, and
- 9:15Speaker 4: I'm sure in the national media and on social media
- 9:17Speaker 4: and so on and so forth with people saying, well,
- 9:19Speaker 4: Biden's letting all these people get No, he's not. And
- 9:22Speaker 4: I have not always been, you know, I'm not a
- 9:24Speaker 4: fan of President Joe Biden. Okay, However, in this case,
- 9:28Speaker 4: I don't have a problem with it. Now we may
- 9:31Speaker 4: have a bigger issue, as Hobbies talked about, with presidential
- 9:34Speaker 4: pardons and things in general, and We can have that
- 9:36Speaker 4: discussion another time, but I have no issue with him
- 9:40Speaker 4: because I don't think they should be put to death.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I think they should have to write in prison. That's
- 9:44Speaker 4: me And in most cases, if you do the research,
- 9:47Speaker 4: it's a whole lot cheaper to imprison someone for life
- 9:52Speaker 4: than it is to put them to death, especially when
- 9:55Speaker 4: you have a lot of appeals and it goes back
- 9:57Speaker 4: and forth and people spending twenty and thirty years on
- 10:00Speaker 4: death row, and that money that's used in those cases
- 10:02Speaker 4: comes from me and you, you know, on behalf of
- 10:05Speaker 4: the government. So again, as primal as that can be
- 10:11Speaker 4: at times, and I can be sometimes include myself in that, again,
- 10:16Speaker 4: I would much rather see them rot in jail as
- 10:20Speaker 4: opposed to the death penalty, because I think in many
- 10:21Speaker 4: of these cases the death penalty is quite simply it's
- 10:26Speaker 4: it's too good for it. But Dave Islands showing five
- 10:29Speaker 4: eighty Live is brought to you a part by Hustan's Pizza.
- 10:31Speaker 4: To check out the holiday pack from Huston's. A large
- 10:33Speaker 4: eighteen inch Huston's Pepperoni pizza, ten breadsticks, twelve hot wings
- 10:36Speaker 4: and a two liters of PEPSI only thirty three ninety nine.

- 10:41Speaker 4: at Huston's Pizza dot Com. Tex says yesterday, they're going
- 10:46Speaker 4: to rot in prison and joke you taxpayer are going
- 10:49Speaker 4: to pay to keep them there for the rest of
- 10:51Speaker 4: their life. I yeah, that's what I said. But go
- 10:54Speaker 4: back and do the research on how much money it
- 10:56Speaker 4: cost to keep them on death row in many cases,
- 10:59Speaker 4: if there are is a p after appeal after appeal,
- 11:02Speaker 4: that's just kind of where we are. Tex says. The
- 11:05Speaker 4: families of those victims must be devastated this Christmas. Yeah
- 11:07Speaker 4: I could. I can. I can see where where they
- 11:12Speaker 4: would be before we go to break. I do want
- 11:15Speaker 4: to throw this out there. This is the time, as
- 11:18Speaker 4: I mentioned earlier, that a lot of people are taking
- 11:20Speaker 4: off for holiday breaks and so on and so forth,
- 11:23Speaker 4: including uh in our building as well. So I'm taking
- 11:27Speaker 4: so much needed time off now. I'm going to be
- 11:30Speaker 4: in addition to doing this show today, when I leave here,
- 11:33Speaker 4: I'm going to be doing some time over on Superstar
- 11:36Speaker 4: Country ninety six to one KWS. Just after eleven this morning,
- 11:39Speaker 4: I'll be broadcasting live at downtown Ford on Patrick's Street.

- 11:44Speaker 4: I'll be there to tell you all about it. Plus
- 11:46Speaker 4: we got plenty of KWS swag to give away, so
- 11:50Speaker 4: stop buy and see me today over downtown Ford on
- 11:52Speaker 4: Patrick Street starting at eleven o'clock from eleven to one

- 11:58Speaker 4: S says, Biden abuse our justice system. I understand he
- 12:03Speaker 4: commuted and didn't pardon those thirty seven fiends, but each
- 12:06Speaker 4: of those individuals were charged and convicted by jury of
- 12:08Speaker 4: their peers to death. I would like to see the
- 12:13Speaker 4: reintroduction of the capital punishment in West Virginia again, and
- 12:18Speaker 4: we have the support to pass it. There has been
- 12:21Speaker 4: a lot of people, a lot of people that says
- 12:25Speaker 4: that that with this legislature that's coming in, that's it's
- 12:31Speaker 4: certainly going to be talked about. I don't know whether
- 12:33Speaker 4: it'll get passed or not, but it's certainly going to
- 12:35Speaker 4: be talked about. Texas, seventy four something million people voted
- 12:38Speaker 4: for Donald Trump. It's not shocking that there are dumb
- 12:41Speaker 4: folks who don't know the difference between commuting a sentence
- 12:45Speaker 4: and a pardon. Tex says riting in prison on our
- 12:49Speaker 4: dime and more considerate. Okay, wait a minute, rotting in
- 12:53Speaker 4: prison or our dime and more considerate than they gave
- 12:56Speaker 4: their more consideration than they gave their victims. Let's have

- 16:18Speaker 4: with me this morning. I said, you know what, let's
- 16:19Speaker 4: talk about that on the show. I want to get
- 16:21Speaker 4: into that a little bit later on. Tex says, even
- 16:23Speaker 4: with the overwhelming evidence that the death sentence costs more
- 16:26Speaker 4: taxpayer dollars than life in prison sentences, fiscal conservatives will
- 16:30Speaker 4: do mental gymnastics to justify state sanctioned executions. It's extra

- 16:43Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Trust
- 16:44Speaker 4: you and the family had a good, good Christmas.
- 16:46Speaker 5: We did.
- 16:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I was talking to Ron Hughes right when I was
- 16:49Speaker 3: coming in here.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Well okay, that's strike one right there, but go ahead,
- 16:51Speaker 4: and I.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Was telling him, you know, we've got my three year
- 16:54Speaker 3: old daughter, Aubrey, and this is kind of her first
- 16:56Speaker 3: Christmas that she's really realizing what Christmas is, right, but
- 16:59Speaker 3: she doesn't know about the presence that Santa Claus is bringing.
- 17:02Speaker 3: And so for the last twenty five days, this has
- 17:03Speaker 3: been about the lights, the elf on the shelf, this
- 17:06Speaker 3: has been about the tree, it's been about family, and
- 17:09Speaker 3: so I've really been absorbing that in the last twenty
- 17:11Speaker 3: five days, really, you know, taking this in because I
- 17:13Speaker 3: know when she gets about five or six, it's going
- 17:15Speaker 3: to be what Santa Claus bringing me for twenty five
- 17:18Speaker 3: days straight. But this time is something that I've you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: I realized, I want to make sure I absorb this
- 17:23Speaker 3: and take in every moment. And it's just been it's
- 17:25Speaker 3: been glorious. I love every moment.
- 17:26Speaker 4: And we were Jeff did a story on all the
- 17:29Speaker 4: light displays in the area. Of course we've got you know,
- 17:31Speaker 4: the slangled all Light the Night that's actually going to
- 17:33Speaker 4: continue through I think New Year's Night. But what's going
- 17:37Speaker 4: on at Coonskin and the Festival of Lights in Saint
- 17:40Speaker 4: Albans And I know then where I live in Putnam County,
- 17:42Speaker 4: there's been all kinds of things going on there as well.
- 17:44Speaker 4: If you want to see Christmas lights in Canal Valley
- 17:46Speaker 4: is the place to be.
- 17:47Speaker 3: It really is, you know, And we talked about that.
- 17:49Speaker 3: You know, when I was a kid growing up that
- 17:52Speaker 3: was kind of coming out of this area and Unfortunately
- 17:54Speaker 3: for a long time we didn't have those events, and
- 17:56Speaker 3: so to be able to bring those back and see
- 17:58Speaker 3: those kids have those men that I remember the very
- 18:01Speaker 3: end of it back here in Connall County, I think
- 18:04Speaker 3: it's great and I think we're going to be able
- 18:06Speaker 3: to continue to do things like that, provide those events
- 18:09Speaker 3: that people can, you know, bring their kids out and
- 18:11Speaker 3: get those memories. I think that's important to community and
- 18:13Speaker 3: I think it's important to what we're doing right now.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Talking with the Canaha County Commission President Lance Wheeler, I
- 18:19Speaker 4: want to talk about the year that was twenty twenty
- 18:21Speaker 4: four for the Canaha County Commission, some of the projects,
- 18:24Speaker 4: some of the things that were achieved by the Commission
- 18:27Speaker 4: and the county in general in twenty twenty four.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Yeah. So, you know, this is the first year that
- 18:31Speaker 3: I came on as the Kennall County Commission President, and
- 18:34Speaker 3: I wouldn't say that I'm proud of the things that
- 18:36Speaker 3: we've done. You know, we, just like everyone else, have
- 18:39Speaker 3: seen the effects of inflation, you know, the prices of
- 18:41Speaker 3: everything going up, and that really put a strain on
- 18:44Speaker 3: our budget. So we were able to go in there
- 18:46Speaker 3: be very meticulous and look at how can we save
- 18:49Speaker 3: money taxpayer money while still continuing to do the same services.
- 18:53Speaker 3: And we were able to do that. You know, we
- 18:54Speaker 3: were able to pass a flat budget. But not only
- 18:57Speaker 3: were we able to pass a flat budget, we were
- 18:59Speaker 3: able to do a multiple of projects. Whether it's water sewer,
- 19:04Speaker 3: whether it's recreation activity, whether it's our first responders. You know,
- 19:09Speaker 3: we did a lot of things to be able to
- 19:11Speaker 3: upgrade the infrastructure that was drastically needed to be upgraded,
- 19:15Speaker 3: while also being fiscally conservative, passing a balance budget and
- 19:19Speaker 3: making sure that we're using every dime appropriately of our
- 19:23Speaker 3: taxpayer money. You know, we did six water projects. That's
- 19:26Speaker 3: a lot that's over one thousand homes that we'll be
- 19:30Speaker 3: having water once we get to bid and construction because
- 19:32Speaker 3: those do take time. We just recently appropriated money for
- 19:35Speaker 3: a sewer project out in Tornado that's going to go
- 19:38Speaker 3: over to one hundred and twenty five homes and then
- 19:41Speaker 3: the second phase is going to go to an additional
- 19:43Speaker 3: four hundred homes. You know, this is these are things
- 19:46Speaker 3: that we need to be involved in, that we need
- 19:48Speaker 3: to do, but they cost money and so for us
- 19:51Speaker 3: as a count of commission with Commissioner slot and it
- 19:52Speaker 3: Commissioner slang Goo myself being able to dive deep into
- 19:56Speaker 3: a budget, find those cost savings that is taxpayer mone
- 20:00Speaker 3: money again and then be able to use that money
- 20:02Speaker 3: into services that we felt like a good a need
- 20:06Speaker 3: here in the Canall Valley. I think that it's something
- 20:08Speaker 3: important and something that you know, I want to be
- 20:10Speaker 3: proud of that we were able to do here in
- 20:12Speaker 3: twenty twenty four.
- 20:13Speaker 4: And I know something that you have been a very
- 20:16Speaker 4: big part of along with the Commission. But this has
- 20:18Speaker 4: kind of been one of the things you've been on
- 20:20Speaker 4: the show talking about a lot. That's the Hat Film
- 20:21Speaker 4: McCoy trail. Yeah, and the expansion.
- 20:23Speaker 3: You know, I think that's something that we're going to
- 20:25Speaker 3: really be hearing a lot more. Hatfil McCoy obviously partner
- 20:29Speaker 3: with the Kannall County Commission in the largest dirt bike
- 20:32Speaker 3: trail system east of the Mississippi, right here in Kannall
- 20:35Speaker 3: County in Tornado, And you know, we're going to be
- 20:38Speaker 3: marketing that we haven't even market it yet, and we're
- 20:39Speaker 3: getting hundreds and hundreds of people coming in from Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
- 20:43Speaker 3: New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, the list goes on.
- 20:47Speaker 3: You know, having these people come here, spend their hard
- 20:49Speaker 3: earned money right here in Kannall County at small businesses,
- 20:52Speaker 3: staying in the hotels. I think that's one of the
- 20:55Speaker 3: multiple facets of when you look at economic development, is
- 20:58Speaker 3: having those amenities, not just for tourism, Dave, but also
- 21:02Speaker 3: for the community. You know, we talk about here in
- 21:05Speaker 3: the state, we need to bring more people here to
- 21:06Speaker 3: West Virginia. We need we have a beautiful state. They
- 21:09Speaker 3: just need to see it well. The way to do
- 21:11Speaker 3: that is having those amenities. If you ever to think
- 21:13Speaker 3: that I'm going to move my job and take a
- 21:16Speaker 3: job somewhere else out of the area that I'm familiar with,
- 21:19Speaker 3: what's the first thing you're going to do, Dave. If
- 21:20Speaker 3: you have kids, you're going to look at things that
- 21:22Speaker 3: are doing in that area. So having the Selango Lights,
- 21:25Speaker 3: having the Coonskin Christmas at Coonskin, having the hat Film
- 21:28Speaker 3: McCoy trails. You know, when you start looking at that
- 21:31Speaker 3: and saying, you know what, that's a place I do
- 21:33Speaker 3: want to live. That's a place that I want to
- 21:35Speaker 3: grow with my children. Those are the amenities that I
- 21:38Speaker 3: think is the unseen facet of economic development. So when
- 21:42Speaker 3: we start bringing in job creators, you know, developers, businesses
- 21:47Speaker 3: and saying hey, let's market to Kanall County. We want
- 21:50Speaker 3: your business, the first thing they're going to do is
- 21:52Speaker 3: they're going to say, how can we get the workforce
- 21:55Speaker 3: to come in here. So we're not going to be
- 21:57Speaker 3: able to get a wall from Kennall County and from
- 21:59Speaker 3: the state of Westvirginia. We're going to have to bring
- 22:01Speaker 3: some of our leadership in. What will we be able
- 22:04Speaker 3: to entice them? And I think doing these little amenities though,
- 22:08Speaker 3: is a small piece of that pie, is important, and
- 22:11Speaker 3: I think we were able to do that in the
- 22:12Speaker 3: County Commission. You know, just this year we rebatalize our
- 22:15Speaker 3: Kenall County CBB Conventions Visitors Bureau. I think that's important
- 22:18Speaker 3: because we start we need to start looking at how
- 22:20Speaker 3: can we continue to advertise tourism and bringing people here.
- 22:25Speaker 3: You know, my neighbors just recently moved in Dave right
- 22:28Speaker 3: next to me, and we asked him and said, hey,
- 22:30Speaker 3: where are you from. They said, We're from out of state.
- 22:32Speaker 3: So what chose Charles so much Virginia? They said, Well,
- 22:35Speaker 3: we googled it and we loved all the things that
- 22:37Speaker 3: were available.
- 22:40Speaker 4: And I think that's part of it is too, is
- 22:42Speaker 4: because people talk about the jobs. Of course, the jobs
- 22:44Speaker 4: is what's going to bring people to any area. But
- 22:47Speaker 4: people only work so many hours a day, and if
- 22:50Speaker 4: you're a family, you're going to look into well, even
- 22:54Speaker 4: if you're not a part of a family, but just
- 22:55Speaker 4: a single person, you're going to look and say, what
- 22:58Speaker 4: else is there going on in the area area other
- 23:01Speaker 4: than just the job. Because I'm only I'm gonna get
- 23:03Speaker 4: off work at five o'clock. I don't have you know,
- 23:04Speaker 4: I don't work on weekends or something. I need something
- 23:06Speaker 4: else to do. That's where a lot of these things
- 23:08Speaker 4: that's the selling point. And I think that sometime we
- 23:11Speaker 4: as a state West Virginia, over the years, have sold
- 23:15Speaker 4: ourselves short by not really pushing those things out. Yeah
- 23:18Speaker 4: and explain it. Okay, you got the job, Okay, but
- 23:21Speaker 4: here's what else we got, and you push whether it's
- 23:24Speaker 4: the arts or whether you know things in this area
- 23:26Speaker 4: like Capital Market or you mentioned the parks or things
- 23:29Speaker 4: of that nature, the baseball team, you know, the proposed
- 23:31Speaker 4: sports complex, these other things that are also selling points.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look at what we did at Coonskin
- 23:37Speaker 3: with our uh Coonskin short course. You know, it's nine
- 23:40Speaker 3: holes part three. It's a short course obviously, and one
- 23:44Speaker 3: of the intentions of doing that and going in with
- 23:46Speaker 3: that investment was because you can have a younger kid
- 23:50Speaker 3: play and I get phone calls from friends and constituents
- 23:54Speaker 3: all the time saying thank you for putting this in.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I'm able to go on a weekend and take mine
- 23:59Speaker 3: nine year old son, my eight year old daughter out
- 24:02Speaker 3: golfing with me, and they're enjoying the sport with me,
- 24:05Speaker 3: and this is something that's very important to me, and
- 24:08Speaker 3: it's important that I have that relationship with them, and
- 24:10Speaker 3: so they're able to do this every weekend and just
- 24:12Speaker 3: have that family time. I think those are the little
- 24:15Speaker 3: things that we need to make sure we focus on.
- 24:17Speaker 3: And I think if we look back of what we
- 24:19Speaker 3: did as a kind of commission is looking at how
- 24:22Speaker 3: can we best use the taxpayer money fiscally responsible in
- 24:26Speaker 3: these actoor outdoor recreation that is focused on family. And
- 24:30Speaker 3: you know, we had Jarrett Tencher, who is the from Elkview.
- 24:35Speaker 3: He's a national champion in dirt bike racing eight years
- 24:39Speaker 3: old and he is going to the Hatful McCoy trails,
- 24:43Speaker 3: and when he came to our river cutting, he told me,
- 24:45Speaker 3: he said, this is amazing. I have this is mine.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Now I can go to Nevada and my championship race
- 24:51Speaker 3: and tell my friends and you know, the other racers.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I have this in my backyard, backyard, and I think
- 24:57Speaker 3: that that's important for those memory and also in you know,
- 25:01Speaker 3: bringing people here to West Virginia and more importantly bringing
- 25:04Speaker 3: them here to Kennack County.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Talking with Kenaw County Commission President of Lance Wheeler, do
- 25:07Speaker 4: they valance showing five any live is brought to part
- 25:09Speaker 4: by Pinnacle Consultants. Their lead paint Inspection and Risk Assessment
- 25:13Speaker 4: services are designed to identify and to assess the presence
- 25:15Speaker 4: of lead based paints and buildings and other structures using
- 25:18Speaker 4: a three phase approach of inspection, sampling, the lab analysis,
- 25:21Speaker 4: and an assessment report. Visit Pinnacle court dot net. Because
- 25:24Speaker 4: what you don't know can hurt you, Tex says, why
- 25:27Speaker 4: does the county commission only have three members? Seams should
- 25:30Speaker 4: be five or seven with the population here, smallest county
- 25:33Speaker 4: commission than any place I've ever lived before.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Well, the state has said that there are three county
- 25:38Speaker 3: commissioners about twenty years ago. I want to say my time.
- 25:42Speaker 3: It might be wrong. The state legislator said that they
- 25:44Speaker 3: county can move to five, and I think we have
- 25:46Speaker 3: two counties currently that five county commissions.
- 25:49Speaker 4: I was thinking that Wood County had five. I might
- 25:50Speaker 4: be wrong about that.
- 25:51Speaker 3: It's I believe it's monic. No, it's not money. Go
- 25:54Speaker 3: Berkeley County is one and might be Jefferson's the second line. Okay,
- 25:59Speaker 3: but you know we have three. Uh, you know there's
- 26:02Speaker 3: always something we can look into. I don't know how
- 26:04Speaker 3: many more politicians we want. I think that's the question
- 26:08Speaker 3: I would ask, as a politician, how many more elected
- 26:11Speaker 3: officials do we need? How many more races do we need?
- 26:14Speaker 4: But I'm glad to hear you say politician because I
- 26:16Speaker 4: have so many lance I have so many political figures
- 26:18Speaker 4: on the show that they'll say I'm not a politician,
- 26:21Speaker 4: Like the minute you sign your name on the dotted line,
- 26:23Speaker 4: you're a politician.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Look, I recognize that I'm a politician. I hope to
- 26:28Speaker 3: be a different type of politician than you know, one
- 26:31Speaker 3: that's perceived. I want to be one that's transparent. I
- 26:33Speaker 3: want to be one that's always has an open door.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Policy and answering questions. Honestly, just like we got from
- 26:38Speaker 3: that that Texter. Uh, you know, we'd something that if
- 26:41Speaker 3: the public would be interested in having five county commissioners,
- 26:44Speaker 3: we would obviously be you know, interested in seeing what
- 26:47Speaker 3: that would look like. But you know, having threes a
- 26:49Speaker 3: lot already. H And I'm proud to have the three
- 26:52Speaker 3: that I've been able to serve with with Commissioner Slotnik
- 26:55Speaker 3: and Commissioner Slango.
- 26:57Speaker 6: Uh.
- 26:57Speaker 3: You know, we we tend to get along, not all
- 26:59Speaker 3: the time. You know, everybody has differences, but that doesn't
- 27:02Speaker 3: mean that you're not friends. So you know, I'm proud
- 27:04Speaker 3: to be.
- 27:05Speaker 4: A Differences aren't always bad.
- 27:06Speaker 3: You know, you're supposed to have difference. I mean, why
- 27:08Speaker 3: there's three.
- 27:09Speaker 4: And you're going to be adding I want to get
- 27:10Speaker 4: into this. You're going to be adding a new county
- 27:12Speaker 4: commission Natalie Tenant was sworn in and will join you
- 27:15Speaker 4: and Commissioner Silango, the first ever female commission commissioner in
- 27:20Speaker 4: in Kanawa County. I'm sure you're welcoming her aboard as well.
- 27:22Speaker 9: Oh.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know, we had staff has been working with her.
- 27:25Speaker 3: She's really starting to understand exactly everything with the County Commission.
- 27:29Speaker 3: You know, she has a lot of experience with Secretary
- 27:30Speaker 3: of State, yeah, being there for as long as she was,
- 27:33Speaker 3: but county Commission, especially the largest county commission of the
- 27:36Speaker 3: state of West Virginia, it's like drinking water from a
- 27:38Speaker 3: fire hydrant. It's a lot of information at once, and
- 27:41Speaker 3: so she's really taken it on.
- 27:42Speaker 4: And I wanted to say a word about Commissioner Slotnik.
- 27:45Speaker 4: You know, when Can't Carper resigned, Mark was named to
- 27:48Speaker 4: the Commission and agreed to finish out the Carper term.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Did not you know, did not run for the for
- 27:53Speaker 4: the position. He made it clear I think pretty much
- 27:55Speaker 4: from day one that he he was going to serve
- 27:57Speaker 4: out the term and that was going to be it.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Uh.
- 27:59Speaker 4: But I think he should be applauded for his service
- 28:02Speaker 4: for what he did there.
- 28:03Speaker 3: You know, Mark Slotnik, Commissioner Slotnik, you know, was interested
- 28:08Speaker 3: in serving in that position. I think it was something
- 28:12Speaker 3: that Commissioner Slango and I knew immediately that that was
- 28:14Speaker 3: the person to do it. You know, he had the
- 28:16Speaker 3: experience of being there for i want to say, thirty
- 28:19Speaker 3: eight years at the County Commission, all the way from
- 28:21Speaker 3: being a polief started as an intern. You know, he
- 28:24Speaker 3: has all of the information of how things are ran.
- 28:27Speaker 3: You know, he's our county attorney before that. He knows
- 28:31Speaker 3: the decisions and the advice and we respected him for that.
- 28:35Speaker 3: So having him come in and be able to be there,
- 28:37Speaker 3: especially for the election. You know, there is nobody that
- 28:40Speaker 3: knows more about election law than Commissioner Slotnik. And so
- 28:44Speaker 3: when we had him there during the general and we
- 28:46Speaker 3: had our little snafu with the data stick, having him
- 28:50Speaker 3: next to me working with me to get us through
- 28:53Speaker 3: that was very beneficial and I was proud to have
- 28:57Speaker 3: him there and we'll keep him on. I think he
- 28:59Speaker 3: wants to continue to to be the county attorney and
- 29:03Speaker 3: we would love to have.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Them tex says Dave Big. Thanks to Kanah County and
- 29:06Speaker 4: specifically Parks and Golf Director Jeff Hutchinson for hosting the
- 29:09Speaker 4: PGA Hope Program, a free golf therapy clinic for veterans
- 29:13Speaker 4: at Coon Scan a big bed hope. The program grows
- 29:15Speaker 4: and even more veterans participate in the spring.
- 29:17Speaker 3: It's about community, It's about doing things that's going to
- 29:20Speaker 3: give back. You know, I say I'm a politician, Well,
- 29:24Speaker 3: what is the politician politician supposed to be somebody that
- 29:26Speaker 3: represents the constituents they serve and being able to give
- 29:29Speaker 3: back to them, especially those who served our country and
- 29:34Speaker 3: protected us. They deserve everything we can give back to them,
- 29:38Speaker 3: and being able to do things like that. That's just
- 29:40Speaker 3: one of those little things that you don't get to
- 29:41Speaker 3: say on a newspaper, you know, you don't get to
- 29:44Speaker 3: say that with an interview. But the fact that the
- 29:46Speaker 3: text were brought that up is weld appreciate that.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Let's talk about the year of twenty twenty five. What's
- 29:50Speaker 4: on their arrives for the Canawh County Commission.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Well, you know, politicians want to come in from a
- 29:55Speaker 3: microphone and say that we've got great things and we're
- 29:58Speaker 3: going to do everything different. Look, you know, I'm proud
- 30:01Speaker 3: of what this kind of commission's done, you know, and
- 30:03Speaker 3: we're going to continue to be efficient and have good government.
- 30:06Speaker 3: We're going to continue to look at how we can
- 30:07Speaker 3: save taxpayer money so we can shift that money into
- 30:11Speaker 3: other services that we're able to provide. But you know,
- 30:14Speaker 3: it's about infrastructure, it's about continuing what we've already started,
- 30:18Speaker 3: what we started in the year twenty twenty four, isn't over.
- 30:21Speaker 3: It's not done. We have a lot more work to do.
- 30:25Speaker 3: There's a lot more infrastructure, including sewers I mentioned previously
- 30:28Speaker 3: when your show, But we need to look at economic development.
- 30:31Speaker 3: You know, we've done a lot for the recreational but
- 30:34Speaker 3: now it's time to work with the state. I'm excited
- 30:37Speaker 3: to work with Governor elect Patrick Morsey. You know, if
- 30:40Speaker 3: there's one thing I know about Patrick Morrissey, he's a winner,
- 30:43Speaker 3: and he's going to find a way to really bring
- 30:45Speaker 3: in businesses and jobs, not just here to state of
- 30:48Speaker 3: West Virginia, but here in Karnall County. And we need
- 30:50Speaker 3: to make sure that what we've already built with our
- 30:52Speaker 3: amenities and our golf courses and our dirt bike trails
- 30:56Speaker 3: enticing those individuals to move here, we now need to
- 30:59Speaker 3: do that on the bi inside of it. So I'm
- 31:01Speaker 3: looking forward to working with him and his administration. I'm
- 31:04Speaker 3: looking forward to doing great things here in Kannall County,
- 31:06Speaker 3: saving more taxpayer money and looking at what services we
- 31:10Speaker 3: can continue to be more efficient and actually be better at.
- 31:13Speaker 3: You know, when I started in twenty twenty, the first
- 31:15Speaker 3: thing I realized was our demolition of dilapidated structures program
- 31:18Speaker 3: was abysmal. We were barely doing anything at the time,
- 31:21Speaker 3: and so we got the ARP money that came in,
- 31:24Speaker 3: found out it was eligible for demolition of dilapidated structures,
- 31:27Speaker 3: put a million dollars to it, and we have been
- 31:30Speaker 3: moving so quickly. The state has actually recognized that we
- 31:34Speaker 3: may be doing more than any other county. We're kind
- 31:37Speaker 3: of the pilot program from them, and we've been successful.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Just this year here in twenty twenty four, we've been
- 31:43Speaker 3: able to demolish over one hundred and fifty dilapidated structures
- 31:48Speaker 3: and that's a lot. And so what I wanted to
- 31:50Speaker 3: know though, was as a politician, is how is that
- 31:53Speaker 3: affecting us?
- 31:54Speaker 4: Right?
- 31:54Speaker 3: Well, one of the things that I always used to
- 31:56Speaker 3: see was vacant fire structures. How many of these vacant
- 32:01Speaker 3: buildings were catching on fire and we were using resources
- 32:04Speaker 3: with our fire department and Metro nam on one and
- 32:06Speaker 3: all of our first responders just to take out a
- 32:09Speaker 3: vacant fire of a dilapidated structure. Well, we looked back
- 32:12Speaker 3: to the numbers and we see that this year, compared
- 32:15Speaker 3: to when we first started this program, vacant fires are
- 32:18Speaker 3: down thirty percent that's significant. It is that's less resources,
- 32:23Speaker 3: that's less times that we're putting the lives of our
- 32:25Speaker 3: first responders at risk because they're going out to take
- 32:28Speaker 3: care of a vacant fire that they may get caught
- 32:30Speaker 3: up on, or a neighbor's house might catch on fire
- 32:33Speaker 3: or damage it. And so being able to do those
- 32:36Speaker 3: things and then seeing the results of them, it really
- 32:39Speaker 3: means a lot. And that just gives me the accomplishment
- 32:42Speaker 3: and the exciting factor to be able to move forward
- 32:45Speaker 3: here in twenty twenty five. Continue to do what we're doing,
- 32:48Speaker 3: look at how we can do more things. You know,
- 32:51Speaker 3: I've got one idea. Let's start cleaning up the county.
- 32:54Speaker 3: I found a vacuum cleaner that you can pull with
- 32:56Speaker 3: the trailer and it's got a big old hose on
- 32:59Speaker 3: it that you can just drive through the streets and
- 33:02Speaker 3: pick up trash. It's it's affordable, it's easy to do,
- 33:06Speaker 3: and it's something that the people can see and it's
- 33:08Speaker 3: something that we can continue to work. Now. It's not
- 33:11Speaker 3: going to be done in day one. Sure, yeah, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 3: it's going to take time. But if we're able to
- 33:15Speaker 3: do that, especially in the eastern part of the County
- 33:16Speaker 3: where I think this is needed the most. I think
- 33:19Speaker 3: that's doing good gestures like that, whether it's from the public,
- 33:22Speaker 3: the private, or the you know, the government. It just
- 33:26Speaker 3: it's contagious. And so when you start seeing that the
- 33:29Speaker 3: street that you live on is a little cleaner because
- 33:31Speaker 3: that dilapidated building isn't there anymore, you have this tendency.
- 33:35Speaker 3: You know what I think. I want to. I want
- 33:37Speaker 3: to I want to fix up my house. It's that
- 33:39Speaker 3: my neighbor's mown is grassed, so now I need to
- 33:41Speaker 3: move mine, and I.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Kind of commissioned President Lance Wheeler. I hope you and

- 38:10Speaker 4: as we prepare ahead into the new year. Believe it
- 38:12Speaker 4: or not, the twenty first century is now a quarter
- 38:15Speaker 4: of the way done. And remember all the hooplah about
- 38:18Speaker 4: Y two K that everyone panics about and turned out
- 38:20Speaker 4: to be pretty much nothing. I remember it well. So
- 38:23Speaker 4: this begs the question as old guys like me look
- 38:26Speaker 4: back and think how things used to be and how
- 38:29Speaker 4: much better things were back in my day. And by
- 38:31Speaker 4: the way, to anyone listening who's under thirty, trust me,
- 38:34Speaker 4: you will one day, like all of us, say things
- 38:38Speaker 4: were so much better back then. You will may not
- 38:39Speaker 4: be true, but you'll say it. Think you won't, but
- 38:42Speaker 4: you will. So back to where we are now and
- 38:46Speaker 4: where you were, think about how much the world has
- 38:49Speaker 4: changed since the year two thousand as opposed to today.
- 38:55Speaker 4: Speedy Bevans Award winning broadcaster. You hear him on the

- 39:09Speaker 9: The show you get Dave, thank you for having me on.
- 39:11Speaker 9: Good morning to you. You know, as I was thinking
- 39:13Speaker 9: about that, it just downed on me. When Dick Clark
- 39:16Speaker 9: was my age, how many stay up till midnight on
- 39:20Speaker 9: New Year's Eve?
- 39:21Speaker 4: I was just having a talk on his way out
- 39:23Speaker 4: door with Lance wheel Or. He said, you got any
- 39:25Speaker 4: plans for New Year's Eve? I said, yeah. My plan
- 39:27Speaker 4: is to fall asleep on the couch about nine thirty
- 39:29Speaker 4: or ten, and at about eleven fifty five look over
- 39:32Speaker 4: to my wife Elbor and say, wake up, the ball's dropping.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And that's pretty much what New Year's e will be
- 39:38Speaker 4: in my house.
- 39:40Speaker 9: That's the way it's been with me for a number
- 39:43Speaker 9: of years. So you know, when Matt, your producer, called
- 39:46Speaker 9: me uh to set up the phone call, I was wondering,
- 39:50Speaker 9: does Matt know what why to Kate is? And the
- 39:55Speaker 9: potential panic that why t K spread throughout the world.
- 40:01Speaker 4: I don't know, Murphy.
- 40:02Speaker 5: I'm a little older than I sound, so not only
- 40:05Speaker 5: do I remember, but I lived it all right.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Well, it's kind of funny because I share an office
- 40:11Speaker 4: with two people upstairs, and one of them Leah. I said,
- 40:13Speaker 4: So Leah, humor me how old were you in two thousand?
- 40:16Speaker 4: She said, I was one. I said, well, that's good,
- 40:18Speaker 4: that's that's awesome. I'm going to go now, I'm going
- 40:20Speaker 4: to go eat shards of glass. But so seedy. You
- 40:23Speaker 4: and I talked earlier today, and I guess I really
- 40:26Speaker 4: hadn't thought about it till you brought it up. But
- 40:27Speaker 4: with twenty twenty five coming then, we are now at
- 40:30Speaker 4: the quarter century mark of the twenty first century, and
- 40:34Speaker 4: you posed this question to me, what were you doing
- 40:38Speaker 4: back in two thousand that you aren't doing so much
- 40:41Speaker 4: these days? And how much has the world changed since then?
- 40:45Speaker 4: I was talking to another person in the office of there,
- 40:47Speaker 4: Ron Hughes. You know, social media, at least as we
- 40:50Speaker 4: know it now, It was around a little back then,
- 40:53Speaker 4: but it certainly was nothing like what we have now.
- 40:55Speaker 4: People were still watching DVDs at the time. You have
- 41:00Speaker 4: the idea, I'll let you kind of take it from there.
- 41:03Speaker 9: Okay, My email address was compu serve, right, yes see,
- 41:08Speaker 9: that was at coffee Serve dot com. Right right, right,
- 41:12Speaker 9: all right, let's throw this question out. Maybe producer Matt
- 41:16Speaker 9: to the weigh.
- 41:17Speaker 2: In on this.
- 41:18Speaker 9: Uh, those who still have the Aol email address like
- 41:21Speaker 9: Dave Allen DoD AOL dot com. What does the AOL
- 41:25Speaker 9: stand for?
- 41:26Speaker 4: I know it's America Online. Okay, yeah, but I don't
- 41:30Speaker 4: know how but people, some people still have AOL addresses though,
- 41:33Speaker 4: I mean I still see them from time to time.
- 41:36Speaker 9: Yes, yes, people still have the AOL address. I think
- 41:39Speaker 9: coffee serve was gobbled up by AOL at some point.
- 41:44Speaker 9: But but yeah, how many people for Christmas got a
- 41:49Speaker 9: desktop computer?
- 41:52Speaker 4: Do they even make desktop computers anymore? I mean, I
- 41:54Speaker 4: know they obviously have them for offices, I mean to
- 41:57Speaker 4: a certain extent, but even less and less of those.
- 41:59Speaker 4: I mean, you see a lot of people. I mean
- 42:01Speaker 4: I carry a laptop every day. Also I do have
- 42:03Speaker 4: a desktop computer. But how many? But that's for work?
- 42:06Speaker 4: How many people have desktop computers at home?
- 42:08Speaker 2: Now?
- 42:09Speaker 4: Like you said, not a whole lot.
- 42:11Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know if anyone a best Buy or
- 42:17Speaker 9: a Circuit City, Circuit City and advertiser, can.
- 42:20Speaker 4: I mention them they actually are going to sponsor I
- 42:22Speaker 4: think something on the show next year sort a circuit City.
- 42:24Speaker 9: Oh, very very good, very good. But you go into
- 42:28Speaker 9: a best Buy, you don't see desktop computers?
- 42:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right about and most people, or
- 42:35Speaker 4: at least a lot of people I know, their computer
- 42:38Speaker 4: is on that little thing that they keep in their pocket.
- 42:41Speaker 4: It's you see more and more people that don't, that
- 42:43Speaker 4: don't even have a computer anymore. They don't they don't
- 42:46Speaker 4: need one. You know, they use their phone for every
- 42:48Speaker 4: I know a lot of people that use the phone
- 42:50Speaker 4: for everything.
- 42:52Speaker 9: So things we were doing when we were partying, like
- 42:55Speaker 9: it's nineteen ninety nine. I'll give you an example, like
- 42:59Speaker 9: every more I saw by there's a parmar near me,
- 43:04Speaker 9: saw by parmer, I grab an AHD Media publication. I
- 43:08Speaker 9: will go to Starbucks a cup of coffee and read
- 43:12Speaker 9: the Gazette or the Herald Dispatch. Last week a gentleman
- 43:15Speaker 9: came in with his tablet, put his tablet down, got
- 43:19Speaker 9: his coffee, and he looked at me and he said,
- 43:21Speaker 9: I can't tell you the last time I followed somebody
- 43:24Speaker 9: in here reading the newspaper.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I have my Charleston Gazette mail newspaper hard copy
- 43:31Speaker 4: write to my right as we speak right now, and
- 43:35Speaker 4: as long as scaff and the folks at HD Media
- 43:39Speaker 4: are putting out a paper. This is not an endorsement
- 43:41Speaker 4: for HD Media. By the way, it's an endorsement the
- 43:43Speaker 4: fact that I love newspapers. I will still get a
- 43:45Speaker 4: hard copy of the newspaper. But that's just who I am.
- 43:49Speaker 9: Yeah, Hey, Dave's come back to nineteen ninety nine. I've
- 43:51Speaker 9: got a great idea. Why don't we get plastic bottles?
- 43:56Speaker 9: Uh huh, filled them with tapwater and sell them are
- 44:00Speaker 9: two bucks a pop?
- 44:01Speaker 2: What do you know?
- 44:04Speaker 4: Last week, two weeks ago, my wife and I were
- 44:07Speaker 4: in a local Kroger store and she was buying some
- 44:12Speaker 4: bottled water, and an older gentleman came up to her,
- 44:16Speaker 4: older like us, came up to her and said, can
- 44:19Speaker 4: you believe if anybody would have told you that, I
- 44:23Speaker 4: think he said like forty years ago, thirty or forty
- 44:25Speaker 4: years ago, that we would have been buying water in
- 44:28Speaker 4: a store, you would have thought they were crazy.
- 44:32Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 44:32Speaker 4: And now, how many different aisle if you go to
- 44:35Speaker 4: your local Kroger or big Le Pigley Wigglely, how many
- 44:38Speaker 4: different aisles? I mean, how much aisle space does bottled
- 44:40Speaker 4: water take up?
- 44:41Speaker 2: Now?
- 44:42Speaker 9: Yeah, it takes up more than typically your your cokes,
- 44:46Speaker 9: your pepsi's, although doctor pepper is still very much in demand,
- 44:51Speaker 9: it does take up a lot of space. Think about
- 44:54Speaker 9: the car that you're driving today. It's a safety feature
- 44:59Speaker 9: on that car you are driving today. Twenty five years ago,

- 48:05Speaker 4: had an answering machine in the year that was two thousand.
- 48:11Speaker 9: You know, it's interesting on the phones in two thousand
- 48:15Speaker 9: you couldn't text, right, and so just think of what
- 48:20Speaker 9: did we have on Billboard that now say don't text
- 48:24Speaker 9: and drive? Yeah, I mean what did we have on.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Don't drink and drive, which you still shouldn't do, by
- 48:28Speaker 4: the way, All right now, somebody's going to get us
- 48:31Speaker 4: on semantics here, Texas. Two thousand is the end of
- 48:34Speaker 4: the twentieth century. Two thousand and one was the new century,
- 48:38Speaker 4: and Millennium twenty twenty six is the first twenty five
- 48:42Speaker 4: years of the century.
- 48:46Speaker 9: Who am I to argue with that?
- 48:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't argue with that, Texas. My son bought
- 48:50Speaker 4: a desktop, but seems that they are largely for gaming
- 48:53Speaker 4: and video editing these days. For personal use, I can
- 48:58Speaker 4: see that absolutely, tex says November nineteen ninety nine, met
- 49:03Speaker 4: a girl in a Yahoo chat room. May of two
- 49:06Speaker 4: thousand and one, married or still have her and her kids,
- 49:09Speaker 4: but no more Yahoo chat rooms. Well you got Yahoo's
- 49:11Speaker 4: of a different kind. Now you got kids, You got
- 49:13Speaker 4: different kinds of yahoos.
- 49:16Speaker 9: We have opened up a cattle worms of yeah.
- 49:19Speaker 4: And here's the thing about it is is people don't
- 49:21Speaker 4: and I have. You know, I've had a discussion not
- 49:23Speaker 4: long ago about music with one of my neighbors and
- 49:29Speaker 4: he listens to the show every morning. But he said
- 49:31Speaker 4: to me, he said, you know, why don't why don't
- 49:33Speaker 4: radio stations play music from the fifties or sixties anymore?
- 49:37Speaker 4: And I had to explain to him. I said, there
- 49:40Speaker 4: is a time that I don't want to say you're
- 49:43Speaker 4: not relevant because I'm getting to that age now. I'm
- 49:46Speaker 4: not saying that at all. I'm just saying that true
- 49:50Speaker 4: retro right now is two thousand and four. That's what
- 49:54Speaker 4: true because it goes twenty years back. So if I
- 49:58Speaker 4: wanted to say we are going to turn this station
- 50:00Speaker 4: into a retro station, guess what I'd be playing Speedy,
- 50:04Speaker 4: I would be playing nickelback, and I would be playing
- 50:07Speaker 4: whomever else was a hit maker in two thousand and four.
- 50:11Speaker 4: That's what retro is now, my friend.
- 50:14Speaker 9: You know, I know we're running short on time, But
- 50:18Speaker 9: twenty five years ago, the iPod was not invented yet.
- 50:21Speaker 9: And if you ask a ten year old today was
- 50:23Speaker 9: an iPod, They look at you. But when steam Jobs
- 50:27Speaker 9: developed the iPod, he was able to get the music
- 50:31Speaker 9: companies to come on board. A download was ninety nine cents.
- 50:35Speaker 9: Steam Job said, I get seventy five cents. You get
- 50:38Speaker 9: twenty four cents. And they jumped all over it because
- 50:41Speaker 9: these pirate did websites Kaza and LimeWire that you were
- 50:47Speaker 9: downloading the illegal music to burn your cvs. They were
- 50:51Speaker 9: eating the record companies alive.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And now when you look at the
- 50:57Speaker 4: at the end of the year, when all the lists
- 50:58Speaker 4: of the top movies, top television shows, whatever comes out,
- 51:02Speaker 4: what is it now? It's not based on you going
- 51:04Speaker 4: down to your local record store and buying in my gym.
- 51:07Speaker 4: I'm an eighties kid, so what is it based on
- 51:09Speaker 4: me going down to buy buying a cassette or CD.
- 51:11Speaker 4: It's based on downloads. And I'll tell you I am
- 51:15Speaker 4: so old to this day, speedy that I still pay
- 51:17Speaker 4: for cat I still pay for ninety nine percent of
- 51:19Speaker 4: what I purchase in cash? Who does that except for
- 51:22Speaker 4: me and old people?
- 51:23Speaker 9: Yeah? When you go to Blockbuster to rest your video,
- 51:27Speaker 9: do you pay with cash? I do?
- 51:30Speaker 4: I actually do. They don't take crypto at the Blockbuster.
- 51:34Speaker 4: I'm at hey, Speedy. It's been fun having you on
- 51:36Speaker 4: the show today. It's always always fun to reminisce about
- 51:40Speaker 4: the good old days of two thousand. I appreciate you
- 51:44Speaker 4: being here. Have a happy end, Save holiday Sea. All right,
- 51:47Speaker 4: we'll talk again. Speedy Bevans by former boss. I worked
- 51:51Speaker 4: for that guy for twenty and a half years. I
- 51:55Speaker 4: survived it somehow. All right. My thanks to Kononkaddy Commission
- 52:00Speaker 4: President Lanceweeler, and also to Speedy Bavevans for being here.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Coming up on tomorrow's Shohannah Gardner from the Cannell Charleston
- 52:04Speaker 4: Humaine Association with our Adopt Me Please pet of the Week. Also,
- 52:08Speaker 4: we talked in the past about this big event this night,
- 52:11Speaker 4: the Shine Event that's going on in the month of
- 52:13Speaker 4: February at a Capitol high school. It is a prom
- 52:15Speaker 4: for special needs folks. Courtney els We continues her planning
- 52:18Speaker 4: for that. She's gonna join us to talk about it
- 52:20Speaker 4: on the show tomorrow, plus whatever else we can get
- 52:22Speaker 4: into as well. Invite you to join me in about
- 52:24Speaker 4: an hour. I'm gonna be broadcasting live from downtown Ford
