San Antonio police have identified Officer Rafael Perez as the officer who fatally shot 56-year-old Gregory Boaz during a midnight disturbance call on the Northwest Side. Officers arrived to find Boaz allegedly advancing with two large knives, refusing commands to drop them before moving aggressively toward Perez. Though the initial 911 call mentioned a gun, no other armed individuals were found — raising suspicion that Boaz may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
