- 0:05SPEAKER_03: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: Welcome to yet another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor, and this is our show about the intersection between sports and money.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Now, y'all know how we get down.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: We like to start every show with a number.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: This week's number, 200K in drove.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: And that, my friends, can you believe this?
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Floyd Money Mayweather wrote a hot check.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: Now, first of all, I don't even know if people wrote checks anymore, but he wrote a hot check for 200K for some role extra watches.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: And this to me is a sign that the end is near for Floyd.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: It is for a guy who touts himself as Floyd, as you said, Floyd Money Mayweather.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: This is this is this is just it's sad considering how much money this guy made in his career.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: And now he's he's floating bad checks out there for Rolexis.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: My goodness.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's it's but again, it's it's again not it's indicative of the fact that athletes in many cases get bad advice or shouldn't you or all of a sudden come into huge sums of money, don't know what to do with it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Well, I think his runs deeper than that, man.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, there's always been this underlying thing, and I and I'm not taking shots, I'm just keeping it real.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, because he just he got sued today.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: This and we're taking this on Thursday.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I saw that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Uh he got sued today for dropping dropping out of the Tyson exhibition or something else.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: But I really think the issue with him is, and this again, this has been kind of an underground current for a long time, that he's functionally illiterate.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Um, and so is that yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, I don't know what I mean.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: And when I say functionally, like, you know, you can you may he can, I'm sure you can read a menu, but what happens is if you have as much money coming in as he did, you know, hundreds of millions, and you have no clue what the paperwork says, it doesn't take people who are who have a dishonest side to them very long to figure out that, oh, you can't understand the paperwork.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: So I'm just going to shift.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: You I'm gonna make sure you get enough that you're not going to notice, but I'm gonna shift who knows how much over here to this account you're not paying attention to, or I'm gonna spend this.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: And so I think he got caught up in a lot of that.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: That's why he's talking about, you know, he's supposed to have this much money and all of his gone, or or a big chunk of his guns because I think they just stole it right out from up under him because he wasn't, you know, he wasn't looking at the contracts, he wasn't reading them.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: And every wealthy person I know, and they're all athletes that I've covered for the most part, uh, although I know a couple other wealthy people, people who have that kind of eight-digit wealth, and even some people who have seven, they typically have their accountants and their team, and then every once a year or so, they bring in an independent to look at to audit it.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right, to make sure that you, Mr.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Smith, are doing exactly what you're supposed to do.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: And if you're not, we caught it after year one, not after year five, six, or seven.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: And if any if any accounting company ever had a problem with being audited, then they weren't worth having anyway.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Well, it's it's one of the it's one of the rules that you should live by, which is if you if you're if you're making that kind of money or you're really doing anything, signing a lease or whatever it is that you're doing, read the contract.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: That's the most critical piece.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Read the contract, read whatever deal you've signed and you've negotiated.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And if he's in a position where he functionally can't do that, then he's at a tremendous disadvantage.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: He also then probably chose, and sounds like he did choose, just the wrong people to surround himself with.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Because there's a way to mitigate that as a problem if you find people who you can trust to help you or people that you know, but it sounds like he he also didn't do that either, which is which is which is terrible, which is it's and you see this happen over and over and over with athletes, not necessarily the functional literate, functional illiterate piece, but the fact that they entrust somebody to handle their business, and they're betrayed by that person.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And then they also, to your point, they also don't audit it or check up on it, you know, and that is that's a whole Ronald Reagan trust but verify quote from years and years ago.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: You know, he also lives an extraordinarily flashy lifestyle, yeah.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Like, I mean, I would say of the athletes to a prominent, he probably has the flashiest lifestyle.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: And to me, now this is just me, that's always an indication of some sort of insecurity because everybody knows you're rich.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: You don't have to walk around with a suitcase full of five million dollars and bring out stacks of money and go, hey, hey, look at me.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: I got this, or you know, have 12 Rolexes or it's the old cars.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: It's the old sort of Herm Edwards quote.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: If you remember this, Herm Edwards tells everybody who makes money, you know, they come into the NFL or or or he advises people, or I've heard him say this.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: He said, just have one of everything.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Have one house, have one car, have one girlfriend, just have one of everything.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: You don't need two or three of anything else, you just need one of everything.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And I think that goes exactly to your point, which is yeah, you got some money, you should enjoy it, but be careful with how you enjoy it.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And and uh, you know, what's the difference between having one fancy car and three fancy cars?
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: You only need one, you're only driving one at a time.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Um, real quick, along the same thing, I just saw today J.R.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: Smith on uh he was doing some interview somewhere, and he was saying, and he's probably about 43, 44 now.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Maybe he's a little bit older, but is he that?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he probably is.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's probably probably and he was literally saying, I look back now at my age, and I can't believe how dumb I was.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: He goes, I had seven cars living in Cleveland.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Why did I have seven cars?
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: He said, let alone when I was living in Cleveland, you know, and he's like, I had a bunch of Rolexes, like why?
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: And he said, just what you just said right there.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: He literally said, I can only wear them one at a time.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: And he goes, I look back at how much money I wasted and I just shake my head.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Um now, you know, I don't know what his situation is now, but you know, it's uh you have an opportunity to really set yourself up for life.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: And uh some guys do it, uh, but a whole lot of guys don't.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, JR, you know, JR is a Jersey guy, you know, uh went went to high school, you know, not too far from where I live, and he's an Ohio guy.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we're we're you know, we're we're the same.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, I love J.R.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Smith.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: You know, he was he was I he was one of the most entertaining players to watch.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Um, my thing is, no, he's only 40.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Um here's the thing about um Floyd Mayweather.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, I think this is just the beginning.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be seeing a lot of stories over the next couple of years about him getting sued.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Because it's because even you know, even if he's got some money, it may be a situation where he's not liquid.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: You know, he's got to tie it up in buildings or cars or this or jewelry or whatever.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Um and here, you know, I thought this when it first came out, like, why is Floyd Floyd Mayweather fighting?
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Like, for what?
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: And you know what's gonna happen is that's the only way you can make money.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: And so your debt is going to be such that one or two fights will clear it up for me and I can kind of start again or whatever, you know.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: But you know, he's now at a point where he's his age is such that some young whippersnapper with something to prove can catch you now where they could never catch you before.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: But the other other thing, too, is that I mean, I love boxing.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, watching a Mayweather fight is one of the most painful things to watch, you know.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So you the last thing, a the last thing I want to do is watch a Floyd Mayweather fight, even though he's a great fighter.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I just think his style is excruciating to watch.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: But to watch an older uh to watch an older Mayweather fight, it would just be brutal.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: You know, we'd be brutal to watch from from my from my perspective as a fan only.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Uh bottom line for me, the end is near for Floyd Mayweather, and that's a sad story.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, stormy weather for Floyd Mayweather.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: That's what's happening soon.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, I like how you did that.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I can see that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about something positive.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: They're still celebrating, drinking champagne and popping bottles in the city.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, you live 15 minutes from the city, uh, so I do see some champagne dripping.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Well, you know where I was?
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I watched, I was in LA this weekend.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I watched the Knicks game with my two kids who are both uh working in LA right now.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: We watched the Knicks game in LA.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I mean you all the time, except I wasn't here for the for the Knicks game.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Did you guys have a good time watching it?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was great.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: It was great.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: They're huge Knicks fans because they grew up here and they they they are huge Knicks fans.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Now uh one of my friends who's a who was born in the city, uh lives here, one of my best friends.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Um, he went to a Knicks bar and watched it and said it was the next best thing to be in at the garden because it was full of Knicks fans, and he said we were all acting a fool.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: And so uh good for the Knicks.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, you know where we went for Mother's Day at my wife's request.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: We went to go watch the game.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: We went to watch one of the Knicks playoff games at a bar in the East Village, which for those of you not in New York is like downtown and kind of a very it's a one, it's like a great, it's a we're kind of a cool young area.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: We watch a Knicks game at a bar in the East Village, and this is I think the second round of the playoffs.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: That's what we did for Mother's Day.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: It was great, you know.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: You can't you can't ask for more than that, you know.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Now, when Ohio State, especially the I'm trying to think.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: I I do this, I am that guy.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: When Ohio State won in 2014, uh, I went as soon as they won, and I went online and I bought a couple t-shirts and sweatshirts.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: I mean sweatshirts for me, bought a couple for my son, and we had a good time.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: When they won this last one, I was so hyped.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: I think I bought a hoodie, but I also bought a jacket.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: And it was it was a nice jacket, so it wasn't over the top.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it's still a jacket, though.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: And so uh I understand that Knicks fans, I mean, I spent probably, I ain't gonna lie to you, I spent probably 500 bucks when they won the last one.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: I think I did I didn't I think I did the same.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I think I did the same.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: I have sweatshirts and hats and I have coffee mugs and everything.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: If you're not this is just me now.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: At that particular time when Ohio State has won, you expect an Alabama to win it every year.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: And so Ohio State is always in the hunt.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: But Ohio State won a title in 2002, 2014, and 200, what, 24?
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like okay, so I mean that ain't like every year.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: So when they win it, I celebrate and indulge it and enjoy it because it happens every decade.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: So I don't have any shame in spending some cash.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: But the Knicks fans are blowing everybody out the water by how much money they're spending.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, it is so so Fanatics is like the big, the big retailer, you know, that sells a lot of, I think it's the NBA license, biggest license license.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: I like Fanatics.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and um they uh the story came out that they amount of money spent on merchandise is the most ever for a championship team, and it's already, and this is a couple of days ago, had already doubled that of their best-selling NBA finals champion, which were the Lakers in 2020.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So this is just this is the most it the top selling uh across all sports within the first 24 hours in Fanatics history.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: So that's remarkable, you know.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: And I'm not even surprised, man, because you have an iconic franchise, you have a star franchise base, fan base, and you have the excitement of winning a title, and you have the internet and credit cards, which just makes everything I mean, I could do it like right now.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't have to wait.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And then the TV rate, the television ratings for this thing were insane.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: They were insane.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: They were they even even game uh you know, game five, I think at one point had 33 million viewers, which for for these days is an enormous amount, you know.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: That's that's an incredible number of viewers.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: So it is it is a it is it is absolutely remarkable, but the the merch is is selling incredibly well.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I think even more so than I you knew it would sell well.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: I think to this kind of degree, I find just kind of shocking that it is like the best selling thing in history in terms of a you know a champion team championship.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, and I'm curious.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know that you have the answer, and so I'll just ask you a personal choice.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: What is your personal merch of choice?
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Like Ohio State wins, you're buying what?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: First thing that I buy is a hat, no question about it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, so you're a ball cap guy.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: I I have about 8,000 hats.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Uh and that's that's the first thing that I buy.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: The second thing that I buy is a t-shirt.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Those are the two things that I buy.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: How about you?
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: I buy a hoodie one, and then I buy another one.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: I am a hoodie guy.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: I love them.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: I probably have um I probably have about 10 to 12 Ohio State hoodies.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Some of them are zipped up, some are pullover.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Most of, I mean, they're all they got red, they got black.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: I got them in all every color you can name.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: Um, I just like hoodies.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Um in part because uh I go work out in the morning, and whether it's the winter time or even now, when it's summer, it's still you know 60 degrees when I leave the house in the morning.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: So putting a hoodie on is not a problem.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: So I get enough wear out of it.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: And I like the zip-up hoodies too.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: So they don't have to be pullover.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: So I like them because they're functional and flexible, and I can never have enough hoodies.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: I hear you.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: I I I tend to wear uh I don't wear hoodies very often.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: I wear the crew neck switch.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: In fact, I'm wearing a USC Trojans uh I saw that.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I noticed which I by the way I bought on Fanatics.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh I I love the USC merch.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I think it's like the greatest merch.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: You know, it's I like the colors, I like the styles, everything about it.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: I think it's great.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And my daughter, my daughter goes to USC, which is why I can wear it.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: I'm not opposed to to SC.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Matter of fact, I had some SC gear at a certain point for that reason.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: I like the Trojan, I like the colors, but you know, at some point I felt like I was cheating on Ohio State.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Um I can get away with it because my daughter goes here.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I used to like TCU stuff because they were black and purple, and I like that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: And then I really used to like Carolina stuff was my favorite because I like Carolina blue.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I hate Carolina stuff, you know that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: So uh well, you're a Dukeie, but yeah, but the but the color scheme I love.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: And so uh I could I could live with them because they weren't a football school, so I didn't feel bad wearing.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't uh I I would still so so even though I went to both Duke and Ohio State, if Ohio State played Duke in basketball, I would still root for Ohio State.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Not even it wouldn't even be I wouldn't.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're not even telling you.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't even think twice about it.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: So I think that's good.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: I think undergrad, if you went to a real undergrad, where undergrad played, you know, division one power of five sports, power four sports, I think that's really who you are.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: And then 100% agreement, yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: And then if you go to graduate school, if they got a good program, well, you can cheer for them too.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: But undergrad is where you go, you're drinking beer with your boys.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's not the same girls.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Undergrad's totally pool.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not only undergrad, but I grew up in Columbus.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: So I've been, you know, uh I've been inundated with this since I was five years old.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and we'll talk later.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: This is this is a preview of our Ohio State 7 later.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk later about the best running backs in Ohio State history because we talked about the best receivers last week.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: So since the Archie Griffin era.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, since Archie Griffin, which was 74, 75.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: No Vic Janowitz, okay?
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Oh no okay, no Vic Janowitz.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: All right, let me let me get okay.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: Hey, why don't we take a very brief break?
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Remember, let me get my words right.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: Remember to subscribe, rate, review.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: We can always use your help.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Five stars only.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: You give us four stars.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: We may send somebody to your crib.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: So so you looking at Knicks merch, it's selling incredibly well.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: I think it'll continue to sell well.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Do the Knicks repeat next year?
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: No.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: But I mean, I don't think there's any great shame in it.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: I think uh the win the East.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, it's it's uh I'm I'm going to pull my football card.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: It's way too early to say we haven't even had uh, you know, I mean people are betting on it now.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: I would uh I would say no.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: But that's just because we haven't had a repeat champion.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: If you had a bet$100 today, and you got let's say let's say I give you 10 to 1, you know, to pick the fine the NBA finals matchup next year, who would you pick?
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Just you had it, you got you got 10 uh whatever whatever you got.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: You had it, you had a bet a hundred bucks.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: What would you what would you bet on?
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Uh Boston and San Antonio.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: And it's not that uh, I just think it's here's the deal.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: And this is why to me, especially for the Knicks, it's going to be hard to repeat.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: For the next, let's see, they go to training camp in September.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: July, August, so for the next three months, half of this month, half September, they're going to be told how wonderful they are, how great they are, champagne and caviar wherever they go.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: And when they start off training camp next year, their bellies will be full.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: There's not a there's not this, we got to get it.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: There's no hunger city isn't a good thing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: There's not that championship hunger.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: You don't have it, you can't make it up.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: And not only that, the thing that comes along with expectations from fans and from media, all of a sudden now is you do, you're the champs.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: So now you get everybody's best game.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: You weren't getting everybody's best game this year, you just weren't because you weren't the champs.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Now the champs are coming to town, you get everybody's big best game, and uh they'll still win a lot of games, but that's a that's a lot to uh to carry to me, and so that that just makes it hard, doesn't mean they can't do it, just means it's hard, and I don't think they're a great team.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Um, meaning they're a great team, but it's not like they got Shaq and Kobe, they got Jalen Brunson, and as good as Jalen Brunson is, to me, he's still an outlier.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: So can can he continue to be Mr.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: Fourth Quarter, Mr.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Clutch, Mr.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: This, Mr.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: That.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, I hope so.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I I heard somebody, and this is not my I I forget who said this.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Um, somebody can somebody compared Jalen Brunson to Russell Wilson.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: And I thought that was pretty good comparison.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: You know, so Russell Wilson had this incredible year, and they almost they almost repeated the second year, but he had this incredible year, but he had an incredible team behind him.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: He was an outlier in terms of size, you know.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Same with Jalen Brunson.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: It's it's a pretty good analogy.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: I it wasn't mine, I forget who said it.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: No, I heard the same thing.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: When I said they don't have a great team, what I mean is like I was going over this with one of my friends who's a Knicks fan.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, Carl Ashton Thompson's great.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: I said, No, he's not.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: He scored two points in the last game, dog.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: That's not great.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: He's a really good player, but he disappeared the last two games.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: I go, you know, so they don't have that.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Jalen Brunson is that dude.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: He is, but the other guys, they come and they go, and that makes them vulnerable.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: You know, OG looked like he uh is that his name?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: OG OG Ananobi from Indiana Ananobi.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: I didn't know he went to Indiana, but you know, he was quiet early in the series and showed up late in the series, and so you know, Josh Hart is a glue guy, character guy, role player, and so that makes for a very good team.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: And sometimes the team is good enough, but you know, typically in the NBA, you need stars to win, yeah, and so they're kind of an outlier team that won.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: And so good for them.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, their task is to see if they can do it again.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: The good thing is, you know, Jalen Brunson's amazing.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Um, that's really the only words you can say for it because he's got a unique uh herky jerky game that allows him at 6'1 to go in the lane and create.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: And you know, for me, man, every championship team, uh, you gotta have that dude who's not afraid of the moment.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: And clearly, some you know the best point somebody made about the championship series?
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: I thought this was the best point I heard.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: They said the Knicks at winning time, last two or three minutes of the game, the Knicks know exactly what to do with the ball.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Get it to Jalen Bronson and let him create either a bucket or he'll drive and kick it to you and we hope you make the shot.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: They know exactly what they're doing at winning time.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: The Spurs were like, hey, I'm Dylan Harper.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: Am I supposed to do it?
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Or is Wimby supposed to do it?
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Is Castle supposed to do it?
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Which one of us is supposed to get down and get off?
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Well, and that's uh that's the you know, that's the problem of being young.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Well, but I thought the only player who wasn't scared of the moment was Dylan Harper, who's 20 years old, you know?
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: So I don't think he was scared.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: No, I think he would not.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: See, I don't think any of them were scared.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: I think it was just a decision because they had to do it.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: Like check this out.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Like when LeBron and Dwayne Wade first got together in the heat, it was at the end of the game, I don't want to piss you off, so should I take it?
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Should we take turns doing it?
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: And then finally they just said, Hey, LeBron, just do what you do, man.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: And by doing what you do, you'll create it for me if it's not there for you.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Which it took them time to figure that out.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: That's why they lost to the Mavericks in the first year.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: And then after that, you couldn't deal with them.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: And so I think the same thing with the Spurs, they'll now figure out what to do because the Knicks, their greatest strength was they knew exactly what to do at winning time.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: Give it to Brunson and get out the way.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, no.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: The Spurs clearly had more talent and better players.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, and you know, if they age a year, they'll they'll do better.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: I still think OKC is gonna win next year.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: Okay, I'm not I'm not opposed to that.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I still think OKC.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And out of the East, I think we're gonna have a surprise team in the East next year.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Detroit, maybe.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, I wouldn't count out Indiana um because they've got Halliburton coming back.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm telling you that he's he's one of those guys.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's about who can who can uh who can be the guy in the playoffs, and he can.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: He's one of the only guys in the east who can do who can do it.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Uh I don't trust the Sixers' health.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, I'd say the Sixers, but I don't trust them.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: And I think if Boston keeps their team together, they got two stars.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: They can't win, they can't win again with Brown and Tatum.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: They're not that's not gonna happen.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: So I think they'll they'll trade Jalen Brown for somebody.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And I think they'll and I hope they get Giannis.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: Uh it looks like Miami might get Giannis, but that's the the big rumor now is Giannis to the to the Yeah, I think he's still one of those two teams.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what it looks like.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Um, but I hope I hope it goes to the Celtics because I think if he goes to the Heat, it'll be like he's on the bucks.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: You know, it'll be a really good player on a team with you know that doesn't have enough doesn't have enough support for him.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: But but I if I but if I had a bet next year, if I I would I would agree with you on Boston, I would say Boston OKC next year is what I would say.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: That'd be fine with that.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: I I like the NBA.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: NBA's got a lot of storylines, they got a lot of interesting, intriguing teams, and uh I thought the playoffs were were fun for the most part.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Um I think Oklahoma City is gonna be and San Antonio is gonna be a great rivalry for the next five, six, seven years.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: And then we'll see uh how the rivalries develop in the east.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: You know, whether the Knicks can uh be more than a one-hitter quitter, um, you know, or uh you know what's gonna happen with them.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Uh bottom line.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: But the Knicks made the Eastern Conference finals last year, and you know, they they made it this year.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: So I think they're they're they'll definitely be in the mix next year for sure.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, no doubt.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: They'll be in the mix.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: It'll just be can they get over the hump?
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Um and you know, again, they got a guy who they know can deliver at the clutch.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: And that's hard to do in the NBA.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Once you get that guy, um, you know, if if you got a guy who can win it, you know, that's what made the Maveric so dangerous when they went to the finals with Luca two years ago.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: You can do whatever you want to, man.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: They know exactly what to do with the ball at the end of the game.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: And Luca can either bust you himself or create a wide open shot.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: It's just a matter of whether you hit it or not.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Because it's gonna be wide open, it's just a matter of whether you hit it or not.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: And uh, when you got those kind of creators like him and Brunson and a few others, I mean you're really just at the mercy of you know whether they make the shot or miss the shot.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: All right, so what's the bottom line?
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Nick's merchandise for you.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: Get a Nick's sweatshirt, it'll last you longer than a ball cat.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh but but bottom bottom line for me, we when you have a big event, you can still get a huge number of people to watch it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: And when you get a huge number of people to watch it, you got a huge number of people buying the merch.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: Um, as we move on to the next step, I find this interesting because uh both our kids played youth sports.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Uh yours played basketball.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: Mine played uh mine actually ended up playing three years of AAU basketball.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: Um he spent most of his time playing football.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, and while we spent money, it's really funny, and it was money well spent because let me tell you something, man.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: My kid always loves this what this was this was this is the uh snapshot of my kid when it came to athletics.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Always love sports, always loved playing, chubby, borderline fat, unathletic, but a grinder.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: Like if you told him, hey, this is what we need to do to get you better, he'd be like, okay.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Even if he didn't really want to go, he'd go and and do it.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: And so, man, going into his junior year, because I can't I used to take pictures and do videos and stuff.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: I went back and found some video of the first time he did one of those drills in football where you go up and go up and come back and you know, back for, back for I showed it from like this fifth grade and showed it when he was like a junior in high school, and it was like two different humans.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: And that to me was the beauty of whatever money I spent trying to get him in training and trying to get him to be a better athlete.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: Because sometimes, and for me, sometimes it's about it's not like this for everybody.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Sometimes your kids will do just as much for you as they'll do for a trainer, and sometimes they moan and groan and cry if you're pushing them.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: And when you say, Hey, here's Coach Pink over here for$20 an hour, they go, Oh, yes, sir, Coach Pink, whatever you say, Coach Pink.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Like, I just tried to get to get you to do this yesterday, and you you went crying to your mama.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: I was being too hard on you.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: So he was a Coach Pink kind of guy, and so um, you know, so we spent some money like that, but I never felt like I was spending a ton of money, and I always saw results, and so I didn't mind it as long as he was really active and into whatever I was spending money on.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we were we were we were similar.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: I just had a rule with our kids, which was yeah, you if you if you are on a team, you gotta show up for practice.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: You can't like, oh, I don't feel like going.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Or if you're on a team, you gotta show up for for the games.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: You just gotta be just almost as not as a lesson, but almost as like, look, when you do something, you do it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: You don't you don't do it halfway, you know?
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: That first time he had to miss trick-or-treating for football practice.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's tough.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: That's tough.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: But what what I think what we so we spent we spent money on it.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: My kids were were pretty decent players.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Um we didn't spend crazy money, but we spent money on it.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: But they went to everything.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: They also played all the time.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: They didn't really sit on the bench a lot, you know, and that's also helpful.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and I also think there's something great about being involved in a sport, it and being involved in the team and all of that.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: But what I think is both of my kids tell me, which I think is sort of a byproduct and something I wasn't anticipating, is they both really credit uh playing basketball as really helping develop who they are, because it was not like around this, you know, it wasn't around the area where we live.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: They play with the kids from all these different places.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: You know, they went and met all these kids from different places.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Um friends from all over the all over the place now.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And they really think it shaped a lot of who they are, you know, because of, you know, and we were like, you know, I would sometimes go to the games and I sometimes wouldn't.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: So we would sometimes, like my daughter was playing on a pretty decent AAU team where we would, she would go into her her coach was coach was a fantastic coach, one of these guys.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: You know, he was, you know, it was it was her and like, you know, six kids, four boys and two girls, loaded up in his truck.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: He's a six foot seven, former, uh six, probably six seven, got to be 350, you know, former, I think he played in Europe or he played professionally.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Big, big Jamaican dude with long braids.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: We were just like, you know, just go, you know, go with him.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: And she would go with him, and we would be, you know, I would be because I had to travel a lot for the weekends for a lot of when I worked.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: And my wife would have to be with my our son.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: And we, you know, we knew the coaches named Ozzie, and we knew Ozzie really well.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: So Karina, just go with Ozzie and just, you know, hang out with him, and you know, we'll we'll go to some of your games, you know.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was things like that that you know they credit for for how they've developed.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: But what I would say is one of the things we were talking about what for for for this is that you sent me a uh a text or a story that showed the average person is spending a thousand the average family spending like a thousand dollars on youth sports a year.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of money for a lot of people.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And it's largely to chase a dream.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: And I can tell you right now, my kids were good basketball players.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: My kids were never gonna play division one, and they were better than most players, and they're never gonna play division one.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: You want me to tell you the thing, okay, take me this.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: The thing that most parents don't understand is that to play college athletics for the most part, yeah, you have to be talented.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: But if you don't fit the height weight requirements, it doesn't matter.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: It doesn't matter.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like there's an occasional Jalen Brunson outlier.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: But for the most part, if you don't fit, if you're if your kid plays linebacker and he's not 6'2, 230 in high school, I don't care if he's getting 190 tackles a game.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: He's not going to play.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Now, did you know did you know that Aiden played AAU basketball on the same team as Cody Simon for a while?
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Why do I know Cody Simon?
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: He was a linebacker for Ohio State when you said linebacker.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: He's now he's now he's now a linebacker for the Cardinals.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Is that right?
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: How big is he?
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: I think he's the reason you said it, I think he's exactly that size, you know.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, there's there's just measurables.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Like I had a friend of mine, he's an acquaintance, great guy.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: He sent me a text the other day.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Hey, can you like my daughter's uh post on Twitter because she's starting her recruiting journey?
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: And I liked it because I'm a nice guy, but your post has zero to do with my post, your post, anybody's post, now highlight my grasp on attention.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: A post has nothing to do with whether you get a scholarship or not.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: And and what your mother, my mother, what every coach will tell you is if you can play in an elite level, they'll find you.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Trust me, they'll find you.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: No question.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: You ain't gotta go look for them.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: No question.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: They will and think about all the guys on college that come from some little small town, and you're like, well, that's the only, I mean, for better for lack of a better example, let's use Troy Aikman from Henrietta, Oklahoma.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Hey, check this out, people.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: There's been one professional athlete.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: I'm serious, from Henrietta, Oklahoma, of course, in 40 years.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Of course, yeah, there's been like three or four Division I scholarship athletes from Henrietta in four or five years, I mean in 40 or 50 years, because that's not what those kids are.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: And so if you become a star in Henrietta High School in nowhere, Oklahoma, they'll find you.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: But but by the same token, it's you you see a lot of parents out there whose kids have no chance at playing Division I basketball.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: And a lot of it's changed a little bit, but because they're there the goal was always to get your kid a college scholarship, now it's oh, maybe I can get NIL money too.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: But it's still largely to get, it doesn't really shrink, it doesn't really change the universe of kids who are going to become D1 players.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: Here's a question.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: What was your did you have a goal for your kids?
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Um, I thought, no, I I thought they needed to figure it out on their own.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: If they wanted to play at a higher level, they had to, they had to say they wanted to they wanted to pursue it on their own.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: I would say that I would, it's like anything else.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: It's like what I with our kids or any employee, I would try to put them in a position to succeed.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: And I would say, you know, if you really want to pursue basketball, you got to play it like you got to play with players who are like better than you.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: You got to play against players who are better than you.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: So that's how you get better.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: You know, so if you want to do that, I'm happy to support that.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: If you don't, that's also okay, you know.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my uh I was always just about uh, and that's why I said we've worked a lot with trainers because just be the best athlete you can be.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: And if you're willing to grind, I mean, I don't know how good you'll be, I just know you'll be the best you can be.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: Um, and whatever that is, that'll be fine.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but but it's but a lot of it is there's a lot of kids with a lot of talent.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but there's very few who are gonna really work at it.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: You know, one of my daughter's friends, uh, you know, she she she played basketball with uh a couple of a couple of girls who were really, really great players.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Like the three of them were really, really great players when they were young.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And Karina played, you know, she did pretty well in high school.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: She was a thousand-point scorer in high school.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: One of her friends was like practicing all the time.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: And she's a really good, I mean, very good athlete, great player, but she practiced and she pursued it, and that's what she liked, and she ended up playing D1.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: And then there was another another one of her friends who was just a phenomenal athlete.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: She's a she was a great high school player, but she didn't, you know, she just played because she was a great athlete and she liked it.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: But, you know, had any number, her and other, you know, other of my my son's friends or whoever, you know, had they grinded it out, some of them probably could have made it to the next level.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: But the reality is you still need the size, especially in bat, especially in basketball and football, where the big money is.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: You just you just need it.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: You even in tennis now, you need size, otherwise you're gonna get blown off the court.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: So what what I was what I did though was I I would go to some of these tournaments and I would look around and I go, God, you're spending 200 bucks or 300 bucks a month, you know, every other week on a hotel.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm going, God, your kids never never gonna make it.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: You're doing this because you think they're gonna get a scholarship, they're not.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and so then I I started so so then I started doing, then I just did an exercise today.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: So if the average, according to the what the story that you sent me, people are spending$1,000 a year on their kids for their specific use sport.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: And I think it's probably a lot more in some cases, but on average it's a thousand bucks.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: If you did this, if in June 1st of 2008, I just picked June because you know we're in June right now, if you put a thousand bucks into a uh S P 500 ETF and you put a thousand bucks every June 1st from June 2008 to June 2025, and some of this has to do with timing because you bought really low at the beginning, but whatever, you would end up with about$80,000.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: And then I looked at the cost of Ohio, and then if you do it based on like an 11% return, I think it's like, you know, you can get$60,000, but whatever it is, you're gonna get a lot of money, right?
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Then I looked at the cost of Ohio State for four years, room and board and tuition, and then assumed what you know, the average person gets$12,000 to$15,000 a year in financial aid.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: And if you had just put that$1,000 in and you sent your kid to a state school, your kid would have gone to school probably for free, you know, probably with that money.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: And it was the equivalent of a scholarship.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: So I would always be my obnoxious self and tell people who were there.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you should put this.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Are you putting money into a college fund for your kid?
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Just the the hundred bucks that you're you're saving for the hotel.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't do that.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: I'd take the hundred bucks and put it into a fund for your kid.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: And and so, you know, it's it's great, and there's there's a huge benefit to being part of a team and traveling with a team and doing all that.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: I think there's a huge benefit, certainly for my kids, but you have to also, as a parent, give that cost-benefit analysis and go, if I can afford 200 bucks, 300 bucks a month on you know, a hotel to travel with my kid, maybe I should also put two to 300 bucks in a college fund for him because that might be long term and invest it.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: That might be long-term better.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I think the uh the biggest problem with youth sports is uh what you allude to.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: The biggest problem is not the kids, it's not even the money that you spend.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: It's when you spend the money thinking that your kid is going to be some hot shot superstar athlete, because the number of kids who make it are so small.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: And when you see those kids who are elite um division one athletes, you you have to take a reality check and go like, oh, so that's what they look like.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: All right, my kid's probably not there.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I played so I played in a league at Duke.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: It was a great league.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: We played in a league as a graduate school league, and there were a lot of former Division I athletes in graduate school at Duke, right?
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Uh and we had a league where they would you put like two Division I athletes per team, and then they would then they would draft like the, you know, they they draft the lousy players like me, and they'd have a draft in every round, right?
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: And I remember playing against Division I players, and I I was a relatively decent player.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: They're so much better than me.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: And I I remember we I was playing a game and I had a really good first half, and I scored like 20 points or 15 points or something in the first half, and then they decided to put a division one player on me in the second half, right?
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, I shook him the first time, shot a three, and missed it.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Jacques, I didn't touch the ball the rest of the game.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: I couldn't move.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was so much better than me, and I couldn't move, you know, and it's just such a it's such a reality, and you know what?
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: He wasn't even a very good Division I player, and he was so much better than me.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: You know, it's um it's even like that once you're uh depending on what kind of athlete you are, once your kids move up to AAU and they turn 13, 14, and they're they're really practicing their handles, and and even then it'd be your own kids or the kids that they grew up with playing, and you just go, Oh, I think they've already surpassed me.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: But the the other thing with the other thing with you sports is, and this is particularly for for boys, is that the boys who are good at age 8, 9, 10, and 11 will still be good when they're older, but the best kids generally are the ones who start to get better when they're 13, 14, 15.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: You know, just because they it that they get taller, they get more coordinated, what whatever it is.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: And yeah, yeah, it's it's it's a very very different um when you in when you see it, yeah.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: I think uh the thing about youth sports is you just got to keep a handle on it.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: And the hardest thing, man, is to be honest about what kind of talent your kid has.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: You know, the funniest thing on Twitter right now, to me, Twitter, which is a suspool for evil, but there are some funny pockets in there.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: I don't even know what this guy's Twitter handle is.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: I should go find it.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: His whole bit is letters, text messages to a youth coach.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: So he reads text messages.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so funny.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: That he's that I don't know whether they're real or not.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: What happens is he's probably gotten it now, so that people are just sending them all to him.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: And these these these letters that these parents send are insane.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: Hey, I know you won the district championship today, and we won by 30, but my kid only played seven minutes.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: Can can you explain why he didn't play more?
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: I know he's one of the best players on the team.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: And I'm just like, no, I bet he's not.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, you know what, you know what I think is is really good.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: I one of our friends here is a uh high school track coach.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: He's a very, very he's an excellent high school track coach.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: And he says, when he talks to parents, he says the following, and this is you know unique to track, well, not unique to track, but it's helpful to track.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: He says, Okay, here are the times that people ran.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Your son ran the fourth fastest time, and I can run the top three.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: Tell me what I should do.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: You know, and you it and so it's very objective that in it's it's sports that are more subjective that it's it's it's a lot.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: So what's the bottom line for you on the bottom line for me, man, is uh keep a hand on that youth sports, have fun, but don't go crazy.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me on youth sports is as following is as follows.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Assume your kid's not going to make D1 and assume they're not gonna get a college scholarship.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Every dollar that you spend on travel sports, you should put an equivalent dollar into a 529 plan.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: That's what I would that's what I would say.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: If you can afford it, and if you can't afford it, put at least half of what you spend on that, but make it a priority to.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: if the goal is to get your kid a scholar scholarship your concurrent goal should figure out you should try to figure out how do you pay for college uh without that scholarship and that's what that's what I would suggest happens.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: That works for me.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah uh I tried to keep uh I tried to keep it under under wraps uh for my kid and his uh and his deal so let's uh let's go to the favorite uh topic of the of the week concerning ohio state now you pulled this one at the last minute I did about um we did receivers last week yeah so now you wanted to talk about the best running backs since Archie Griffin for Ohio State uh now this is not going to be simply who had the most yards or whatever um and I'm not even sure you know and I'm not gonna lie to you I you know I didn't see Archie Griffin play and I didn't grow up in Columbus so it's not like I grew up I saw him play watching his highlights yeah yeah um so that being said we're going to start and go backwards from uh five to one okay what what do you what do you got let's see all right let me let me I didn't write my I know who mine are uh I'm going to start with um uh you know what this may this may be a bit of a shocker to you at number five let me let me make sure I got this order right okay uh I'm probably gonna get yelled at but you know it be what it be man okay uh number five for me Heisman trophy winner Eddie George wow wow okay okay now that's because Eddie George while he wasn't a Heisman is a tremendous run player even at Ohio State he was still the big bruising not flashy breakaway kind of guy and so that's why he's uh he's my boy I mean I get a bruh hug every time I see him but he's still number five for me wow wow okay who do you got who do you have as for no we should go with your five okay my five this is a very controversial one is Maurice Claret wow yeah okay yeah did he play one year or played one year he I mean it was a hell of a year now they won the national title he was by far the most talented player he's the reason they won a national title and as you said earlier in the show three national titles in the 2000s Maurice Claret was the reason why best one of the best most exciting backs at Iowa State I'm not going to uh I'm not gonna complain about that at all uh number four for me and he could have been higher but I I just couldn't I thought he and he may be underrated I don't know I'll just from your reaction number four for me JK Dobbins that's who I have as number four JK Dobbins was one bad 12 at a game he had you know he's the single season yardage record holder at Ohio State no but I mean that dude was phenomenal he's a little bitty town in Texas i i i gotta tell you I thought about I thought about pushing him higher that's I said I mean I thought about putting him higher yeah me too I thought I thought about him higher but uh um he's phenomenal I have him at four all right who who do you have at three arch who archie griffin oh archie griffin oh okay I have him number three out of respect um oh okay sorry sorry if that's the case then okay um I would have okay I I I didn't realize we're having Archie number one okay I did five after archie okay okay um okay so number I would still have Dobbins at four I wouldn't have Maurice Clorette I would have uh I would have Keith Byers at five really yeah I'd have Keith Byers at five Dobbins at four so Clorette's off my list if Archie's one so I have Byers at five Dobbins at four I got Archie at three I think a lot of that was uh I don't uh you know what I'm uh I said I'm disrespecting him and I'm not trying to um it feels a lot of like what people would say about him and Smith he's an outstanding runner and had the best offensive line and they didn't throw the ball and it was all it was his world everything was built for him right well that's true and then he took advantage of it that's true.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: So this is no shade no shade.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah so okay so I've you got so so I've got so look okay so let me let's recap here you've got who do you you who you have at five you have Eddie George Eddie George at five JK Dobbins at four R.J.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: Griffin at three I have Keith Myers at five JK Dobbins at four I have Eddie George at three.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: All right number two this was a tough one for me but he was either going to be one or he was going to be two and it just so happened that any thoughts I had I saw some highlights on Twitter this morning and I was just like oh my god Zeke Elliott number two I have Zeke I have Zeke at two also I mean if you go back and look at them highlights from the Alabama game when they beat him in the semifinal oh my God I'm not just talking about 85 yards through the heart of the South I'm talking about that one where he took the pitch and on the sideline he just hurdled somebody and went 50 yards yeah you you forget you forget just the explosiveness of man he was and then he did that same thing his first four years in the NFL and then he fell off a cliff but those first four years in the NFL and those those first two years I was gonna say his rookie season in the NFL was he was untouched yeah it was amazing.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: So two is Zeke Elliott for me.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: I have Zeke at number two also and who do you who do you have at one you're going to be shocked and surprised Keith Byers oh you do have Keith Byers at one 1700 yards at 6'2 and 250 I love 74 yards against Illinois with one shoe keep I know Keith Byers was well okay Keith Byers was at Ohio State the same time I was you know he was there my freshman year yeah and so he was 83 8045 something like that right something I think he was hurt my actually he was hurt my freshman year yeah and so he didn't play but he he broke his foot I remember right his fifth metatarsal he was oh very even even more impressive I thought he broke his toe but he broke his metatarsal the uh even he was one of he was my favorite runner my favorite guy to watch without question he's he was unbelievable he was a lefty he threw you know he threw the he threw some of the halfback options he was he was a great player he really was and he was he was a bruising player too yeah you know and he still has the speed to go 74 yards with one shoot yeah he's he was great but I have archie at number one I do but but again I grew up when I was really young I would watch Archie Griffin and it was really exciting and he was he was a great but he's tiny back he's tiny back he's like five nine and I remember being I remember being a kid and I couldn't understand why he wasn't going to be the first pick in the NFL draft and he didn't I don't even know if he was in the first round he was he was that was like a fourth round yeah and I couldn't and then then you saw him in the and you you saw him in the NFL and you realized boy he's really small you know I had the same reaction to was uh and I consider putting him in the top I he wasn't in the top five but I you know one of the backs I considered is is Beanie Wells.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: It was a great Beanie Wells was really really good great back but you watch him in the pro and you watch him in college he looked great you watch him in the pros he looked tiny um you know I think Treyvon Henderson was really good but he had a uh he had one year that his sophomore year was just kind of eh yeah and then he had a strong junior year but then you know Judkins uh he just wasn't around enough uh for one year well Henderson Henderson in terms of talent I think Zeke Elliott and Henderson are the two most talented backs at Ohio State maybe Clarette is up there too but those those two are the two just just incredible talent both of those both of those backs but I Judkins the longer he's out of Ohio State the more I appreciate him.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah like last year if either one of those guys had been the dude last year I think we'd have won it because I totally agree on the ball I totally agree and I was reading Ryan Day was talking specifically about what he's looking for from saying this this year is he's got to make some plays with his legs you know and so and then I read somewhere and I I remember I'm calling this as the Ohio State quarterback controversy this year with Tavian St.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: Clair I read somewhere that there is thought that once he be once St.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: Clair becomes a full-time ohio state quarterback he's being considered as a potential future number one pick that's how because of his size and his you know he's like I think he's like 6'4 230 you know almost like the perfect size you know and I'm I'm telling you when ohio state stumbles this year St.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: Clair's gonna get in the game we're gonna have a we're gonna have a quarterback controversy this year I'm telling you telling you got to watch out for it I don't uh I'm not disputing you you know I think uh um you know Tavyan St.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Clair 6'4230 yeah he's a big boy yeah he's and he could probably run a little bit but man I'll tell you Keith Byers I hadn't thought about Keith Byers for a long time until today when I was like thinking I I was looking him up and I said Keith Byers has got to be in the top you know five and I probably had him too low.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: It was either him or Zeke for me.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah yeah I think those are those are great backs um but and you didn't really see Archie so it's hard to say but uh but yeah archie in college was just you know and for that time I mean he was you know running backs were were everything at that you know in the 70s in college football and he was he was he was a he was a great back just a great back so so there's uh to recap one more time uh for me the top five backs are Eddie George JK Dobbins Archie Griffin Zeke Elliott and at number one Keith Byers well you know we had all five the same as in the top we didn't even plan this yeah yeah but just just different orders I had uh Byers fifth and I you know I I'm gonna change my no I'm not buyers fifth JK Dobbins fourth eddie George third Zeke two and Archie one for me uh bottom line Ohio state will not win a championship if they don't get another running back like one of these cats tote the rock but bottom line for me is uh but Bo Jackson from Ohio State will not crack this top five list yeah hey we appreciate you hanging out don't forget to subscribe rate and review we appreciate you and uh we'll talk to you next week all right thanks everybody we'll see you next week
