Latest / Birdland Territory / Orioles drop weekend series to Red Sox
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: All, we have been here with the Orioles before, where
- 0:10Speaker 1: they've had a couple amazing comeback wins that did not
- 0:13Speaker 1: lead to positive momentum. And then there was Friday night
- 0:18Speaker 1: when they absolutely annihilated the Red Sox, hit six on runs,
- 0:21Speaker 1: twenty hits, ten runs, and then didn't score much the
- 0:25Speaker 1: rest of the weekend. So a disappointing to say the
- 0:27Speaker 1: least series lost for the Orioles to the Red Sox.
- 0:29Speaker 1: They lose two out of three, and now the last
- 0:32Speaker 1: place Red Sox guys are only two games behind the Orioles,
- 0:35Speaker 1: who are getting further and further away from first place.
- 0:39Speaker 1: The Yankees have hit a good run here and as
- 0:42Speaker 1: of Sunday game time, the Oils were already five behind
- 0:45Speaker 1: Yankees losing at last check. So maybe it'll stay that way.
- 0:49Speaker 1: What's you take, guys? What a weekend? Friday Night looks
- 0:51Speaker 1: so positive and so uplifting and like it might leak
- 0:54Speaker 1: carry to something better and then it didn't. What do
- 0:59Speaker 1: you say, Brad?
- 1:00Speaker 2: I mean it just it seems to be the theme.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It seems to be the theme of the season to
- 1:04Speaker 2: this point. We've had this same conversation multiple times. To
- 1:08Speaker 2: get a big first game win and seems like it's
- 1:10Speaker 2: gonna lead to something bigger. And then Saturday was just
- 1:13Speaker 2: I mean, they got kind of damboozled there in the
- 1:16Speaker 2: second inning, it fell way behind, and then it just
- 1:17Speaker 2: got ugly there at the end. But yeah, you would
- 1:20Speaker 2: think that that win Friday was just gonna the offense
- 1:23Speaker 2: was gonna get going, the starting pitching was going to
- 1:24Speaker 2: start rolling. And unfortunately, last two games it kind of
- 1:27Speaker 2: did the opposite of where you thought it was going
- 1:30Speaker 2: to go, and they see themselves losing another series.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's definitely disappointing, Steve, because Friday went so
- 1:39Speaker 3: well for this club man and for the first time
- 1:41Speaker 3: they were able to put up a crooked number in
- 1:43Speaker 3: the first inning, scoring four runs. They just jumped all
- 1:47Speaker 3: over Brian Bao. They hit six home runs, and this
- 1:51Speaker 3: was a struggling club coming in and you thought that
- 1:54Speaker 3: they were going to build off of it. And like
- 1:56Speaker 3: we were saying Wednesday, I was so interested in seeing
- 2:00Speaker 3: how this starting rotation would fare this week because you
- 2:03Speaker 3: went against two struggling offenses, the Red Sox in town,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and how is Trevor Rodgers going to bounce back after
- 2:09Speaker 3: back to back poor outings. Well, he didn't even make
- 2:13Speaker 3: it out of the second inning, and it was just
- 2:15Speaker 3: an ugly game yesterday and today's Steve it was just frustrating,
- 2:21Speaker 3: and the fact that you only kept one at that
- 2:24Speaker 3: with a runner in scoring position today, the offense just
- 2:28Speaker 3: couldn't really get going and you end up losing a
- 2:32Speaker 3: series and it kind of furthers this disappointing start to
- 2:36Speaker 3: the season.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Four runs and twelve hits total after Friday night, that's
- 2:43Speaker 1: just not going to get it done. It's interesting because
- 2:45Speaker 1: we keep saying sort of message to the fans that
- 2:48Speaker 1: they're kind of feeling out the season, that they'll get
- 2:51Speaker 1: on a roll here, things will turn. But the more
- 2:54Speaker 1: it doesn't happen after some good wins, the more you
- 2:58Speaker 1: start to feel like it's gonna go this way all year.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Now we're not even thirty games in, so there's one
- 3:03Speaker 1: hundred and thirty plus to go. This tube may may pass,
- 3:08Speaker 1: but it's feeling like until it does, we can't really
- 3:11Speaker 1: say it's going to yeah, And.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I think it's you don't know, or it's we're not
- 3:17Speaker 2: getting the results we want to see and you just
- 3:19Speaker 2: don't know when it's gonna turn. And I feel like
- 3:21Speaker 2: it's been five or six series in a row now
- 3:24Speaker 2: where we're just waiting for the offense to just start
- 3:26Speaker 2: clicking and they're starting pitching to get going, like we've
- 3:28Speaker 2: talked about it, and it's just you just wonder how
- 3:31Speaker 2: long it's gonna continue going this way. And this weekend
- 3:33Speaker 2: they finally start hitting home runs, but they can't get
- 3:35Speaker 2: base runners on. So it's it just kind of seems
- 3:38Speaker 2: like they get one aspect of the offense going and
- 3:40Speaker 2: then the other aspect kind of just falls off and
- 3:43Speaker 2: they can't get enough runs to score and they're starting pitching.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yesterday with Trevor Rodgers, he was so close to getting
- 3:49Speaker 2: out of that inning. He had two strikes on multiple
- 3:51Speaker 2: batters there and just couldn't get that final pitch to
- 3:53Speaker 2: end that edenning and it kind of just led to
- 3:55Speaker 2: bad things from there. So, like you said, it just
- 3:57Speaker 2: seems like it's so close you think it's gonna turn.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But here we are still kind of talking about another
- 4:02Speaker 2: series loss.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and Steve, you brought up the point during one
- 4:07Speaker 3: of the episodes last week that this was a pivotal
- 4:09Speaker 3: stretch for this club right now that the Red Sox
- 4:12Speaker 3: were struggling coming in the Astros come to town beginning
- 4:15Speaker 3: on Tuesday. They've gotten off to a pretty rough start
- 4:18Speaker 3: to the season as well, but then the schedule really
- 4:21Speaker 3: turns up.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You head to the Bronx to take on the Yankees.
- 4:24Speaker 3: You played two series against them in a twelve day span,
- 4:29Speaker 3: I believe. So it's just been frustrating because you know
- 4:33Speaker 3: the potential that a lot of these players have that
- 4:37Speaker 3: it's just not happening. Gunner he homered again today, but
- 4:41Speaker 3: his season it's almost been a homer or a strikeout,
- 4:44Speaker 3: almost like a two years old type of thing for him.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Pete it was another over for him, is still waiting
- 4:50Speaker 3: for him to get going. And this starting rotation as well,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it has to be better. And Brad, you bring up
- 4:58Speaker 3: a point, and I feel like this has been an
- 5:01Speaker 3: issue for a lot of guys. Kyle Bradish today the
- 5:03Speaker 3: leadoff guy got on in four consecutive innings for him,
- 5:07Speaker 3: Trevor Rounder not being able to put away guys, he's
- 5:10Speaker 3: really struggled with two strikes, he's really struggled with two outs,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and you know, and Kramer going to the il now
- 5:19Speaker 3: and inserting Brandon Young. So the depth has already been
- 5:23Speaker 3: tested with this starting rotation early on in the season.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it has, it's been it's been tested, and it's
- 5:29Speaker 2: going to continue to be tested. It's kind of just
- 5:31Speaker 2: where the state of baseball is right now that you
- 5:33Speaker 2: need to have more than five arms and they've obviously
- 5:36Speaker 2: gone through seven or eight already. You hope that's all
- 5:38Speaker 2: they're gonna need from here on out, but uh yeah,
- 5:41Speaker 2: just gotta just I just want to see him get going,
- 5:44Speaker 2: get on a roll and kind of pass the ball
- 5:46Speaker 2: to the next guy. Just put together some quality starts
- 5:48Speaker 2: to give this offense ave chance to get ahead. And then,
- 5:51Speaker 2: like we keep saying, just get this bullpen with the lead.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I'm dying to see them have consecutive games with a
- 5:57Speaker 2: small lead and really see what these guys are made
- 5:59Speaker 2: up out there, because they have the potential to be
- 6:01Speaker 2: a really, really strong unit.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So Birdland, there's plenty of time for that to happen.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But each time it doesn't happen, the concern level, I
- 6:11Speaker 1: guess gets ratcheted up a little. And if you think
- 6:13Speaker 1: about this weekend, guys, such a great win, Friday, great crowd,
- 6:16Speaker 1: all of that, Rogers going down followed by Bradish Now
- 6:21Speaker 1: you're looking at a big weekend but didn't happen. What's
- 6:24Speaker 1: the concern level?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Now?
- 6:26Speaker 1: After today's game, you have Rogers record for the years
- 6:28Speaker 1: two and three, four seven five. Bradish after today gives
- 6:32Speaker 1: up three runs in five innings one in three four twenty.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I mean, if that's what it's gonna be, it's gonna
- 6:39Speaker 1: be a tough year for the Oils because they're counting
- 6:41Speaker 1: on so much better from those guys. And I'm not
- 6:43Speaker 1: putting it on just two men, obviously, so many more
- 6:46Speaker 1: are involved here, but we're expecting more from those two.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Right I want to start with Trevor Rodgers because I'm
- 6:54Speaker 3: on his Baseball Reference page and I'm looking for things
- 6:57Speaker 3: that really jump out to me, and there's a couple
- 6:59Speaker 3: of things. He's been dominant against left handed bats this year.
- 7:04Speaker 3: They're hitting just ninety one, but right he's they're finding
- 7:07Speaker 3: a lot of success off him right now, three twenty
- 7:09Speaker 3: three batting average. You can look at the seven through
- 7:13Speaker 3: nine hitters are doing the most damage against Trevor Rodgers,
- 7:17Speaker 3: which is very surprising. They're hitting three sixty four and
- 7:20Speaker 3: eight eighty seven ops. That's the highest out of any
- 7:23Speaker 3: of the thirds of the lineup. But the big thing
- 7:27Speaker 3: that sticks out to me that we touched on a
- 7:29Speaker 3: little bit, Brad. When he gets opposing batters to two strikes,
- 7:35Speaker 3: they're hitting three seventeen off of him.
- 7:38Speaker 4: He's just not.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Able to put put away guys and he's getting ahead.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But three seventeen batting average with two strikes against Trevor Rodgers,
- 7:47Speaker 3: It's it's shocking.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's that really is a shocking number. When
- 7:51Speaker 2: you get the two strikes and you know how good
- 7:52Speaker 2: he is and how much success he's had here recently.
- 7:55Speaker 2: That is it's shocking to hear it out loud and
- 7:57Speaker 2: you can read it. But when you think about three
- 7:59Speaker 2: seventeen is I mean, you're probably looking at under one
- 8:02Speaker 2: hundred with two strikes is the normal batting average in
- 8:05Speaker 2: the Major League. So yeah, just not able to put
- 8:08Speaker 2: these guys away. It's I think it's a combination of
- 8:10Speaker 2: just not having as sharp a breaking ball stuff right
- 8:13Speaker 2: now and just kind of I don't know, just these
- 8:16Speaker 2: guys are willing to kind of take the pitches that
- 8:18Speaker 2: are given to him. And I think we've talked about
- 8:20Speaker 2: this with the rotation as a whole, but the fastball
- 8:22Speaker 2: command has just been off. It's been off, not with
- 8:25Speaker 2: just Brash and Rogers, but it's just been, it's been.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It seems to be ball one a lot watching these games,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and the difference of the one to one OHO is
- 8:36Speaker 2: tolled throughout baseball and everybody knows it. It's about a
- 8:38Speaker 2: two or three hundred point difference between those two numbers,
- 8:41Speaker 2: and there's just way too many one oh starts to
- 8:43Speaker 2: these counts, and when you finally get back in these counts,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you're having to make more pitches. So when they get
- 8:48Speaker 2: to two strikes, they've seen more pitches, and maybe that
- 8:50Speaker 2: has something to do with it. It's hard to pinpoint
- 8:53Speaker 2: anything because that really is a shocking number to hear.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And if you're looking for a reason for oism when
- 9:01Speaker 3: it comes to Trevor Rodgers, I saw this stat on
- 9:04Speaker 3: Twitter heading into today, Trevor Rodgers has gotten sixty eight
- 9:08Speaker 3: chases in his last three hundred pitches, which is the
- 9:12Speaker 3: second most by a starting pitcher in the majors over
- 9:15Speaker 3: the last three hundred pitches span. For all of these guys,
- 9:19Speaker 3: the chase rate is still high for him. He's not
- 9:23Speaker 3: getting hit hard, it's just failing to close out the
- 9:28Speaker 3: at bats. It's failing to close out innings because batters
- 9:31Speaker 3: with two outs against him, they're hiding four hundred off
- 9:34Speaker 3: of them. He's given up nine runs with two outs,
- 9:37Speaker 3: which is the most as well. And then you get
- 9:40Speaker 3: to the brad ish of it all. Brad and the
- 9:44Speaker 3: walks reared its ugly head again today he had what
- 9:47Speaker 3: four walks. I think in the first four innings. A
- 9:50Speaker 3: lot of the leadoff men were getting on. It just
- 9:52Speaker 3: seems like he's pitching from behind way too often.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Yeah, today that was the three That was the biggest thing,
- 9:59Speaker 2: just to wat to almost every single hitter. It seemed like,
- 10:01Speaker 2: I know, it wasn't every single one, but one oh
- 10:04Speaker 2: to all these guys and just kind of they seem
- 10:06Speaker 2: to me like bad misses. It wasn't just be like
- 10:09Speaker 2: just missing his own. It was balls down in the
- 10:11Speaker 2: dirt on his breaking ball and his two seamer just
- 10:13Speaker 2: had so much run on it that it really wasn't
- 10:15Speaker 2: even competitive pitches to get to the one oh count.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So I think when you're a hitter, you can really
- 10:20Speaker 2: start to zero in on an area where you think
- 10:23Speaker 2: the pitch is gonna come from, and if you don't
- 10:25Speaker 2: see it there, you just leave it because you know
- 10:26Speaker 2: it's going to be a ball and he can only
- 10:28Speaker 2: you can only run away from that so often before
- 10:31Speaker 2: you're gonna get burned on. And that's what happened there
- 10:33Speaker 2: later in his out, and he got behind on these
- 10:35Speaker 2: guys and they finally made them pay for his mistakes.
- 10:37Speaker 2: He got out of the few scenarios early on in
- 10:40Speaker 2: the game, but it's just so hard to pitch out
- 10:42Speaker 2: of those situations your entire start.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Getting back to Rogers for a second. After the game Saturday,
- 10:49Speaker 1: Craig Alburn has said his fastball shape is not where
- 10:55Speaker 1: it usually is. What do you make of that comment, Brad?
- 11:00Speaker 1: And if he gets the shape he wants, is that
- 11:04Speaker 1: the fix here? What do you think Albert has Again,
- 11:07Speaker 1: none of the three of us have talked in Lund
- 11:09Speaker 1: and a skipper to get a detailed explanation exactly what
- 11:12Speaker 1: he meant. But what do you read into that sentence?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's just starting in a different spot.
- 11:17Speaker 2: To me, that's kind of what I'm what I hear,
- 11:19Speaker 2: And if I was someone came to me and said
- 11:21Speaker 2: my shape looked different, it just means that it's starting
- 11:23Speaker 2: in a different spot that he's used to. And I
- 11:25Speaker 2: think the hitters are able to recognize it better, and
- 11:28Speaker 2: I think by his shape not being where he wants
- 11:31Speaker 2: it to be, I think that's why he's unable to
- 11:33Speaker 2: get these swings and miss with two strikes, because they're
- 11:35Speaker 2: almost able to eliminate the fastball if it's coming out
- 11:38Speaker 2: of a different spot that it normally does. In a
- 11:41Speaker 2: perfect world, you want all your pitches to come out
- 11:43Speaker 2: of that same exact slot, and if it's coming out
- 11:45Speaker 2: a different spot, you can kind of eliminate the fastball,
- 11:48Speaker 2: and from there you know what his brick and balls
- 11:50Speaker 2: and off speed are going to do. So if you're
- 11:52Speaker 2: able to eliminate one pitch, these hitters are so good
- 11:54Speaker 2: these days that they're able to just pick it up
- 11:56Speaker 2: so fast. So I think that's kind of what he meant.
- 11:58Speaker 2: It's just it's starting in a different spot or it
- 12:00Speaker 2: looks different, and the hitters when they pick that up,
- 12:02Speaker 2: they're ready to pounce on it early and often in
- 12:05Speaker 2: those counts.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Is that an easy fix for a pitcher or hard
- 12:10Speaker 1: or is it hard for you to know that because
- 12:12Speaker 1: maybe twenty different guys we might have twenty different answers.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think it's kind of hard to tell.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It's a guy to guy thing. But these guys now
- 12:20Speaker 2: are so good at going on the track man or
- 12:22Speaker 2: whatever technology they have and figuring out these things so quick.
- 12:25Speaker 2: So I think for him it's going to be an
- 12:27Speaker 2: easier fix than it would have been for safe for
- 12:29Speaker 2: me because I just I didn't know what a lot
- 12:31Speaker 2: of that stuff meant, so for me it was a
- 12:33Speaker 2: little bit harder. But I think these guys they practice
- 12:35Speaker 2: with it so much and they're able to make adjustments
- 12:37Speaker 2: on the fly that I think he'll be able to
- 12:39Speaker 2: make the adjustment and it should be a fairly easy one,
- 12:41Speaker 2: especially with the fastball. I think if it was a
- 12:43Speaker 2: different pitch, maybe that's a different story. But for me,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I think the fastball is the easiest fix.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I do want to get back to the point you
- 12:49Speaker 3: brought up there, Brad, because I do wonder, and I'm
- 12:52Speaker 3: sure that that's very player by player specific when it
- 12:56Speaker 3: comes to all of these advanced numbers and the analytics,
- 13:00Speaker 3: where can that be paralysis by analysis at some point
- 13:05Speaker 3: where it's too much information. Look, I'm sure some guys
- 13:08Speaker 3: they want everything they can get on all of these guys,
- 13:11Speaker 3: but can that be overwhelming at times for a pitcher?
- 13:15Speaker 2: I think so for me towards the end of my career,
- 13:18Speaker 2: it just seemed like there were so many numbers. It's
- 13:19Speaker 2: kind of like somebody go out there and get ahead
- 13:21Speaker 2: of the guy and try to get to my off speed.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Like it's the game hasn't changed that much. But there's
- 13:25Speaker 2: a lot of guys that want that stuff now, and
- 13:27Speaker 2: they really I mean they train off of it, they
- 13:30Speaker 2: pitch off of it, they get their scattered reports off
- 13:32Speaker 2: of it, So it really is a guided guy thing.
- 13:35Speaker 2: But there, I mean, if you want something, they have it,
- 13:38Speaker 2: and I think that is the advantage of it all.
- 13:40Speaker 2: But I agree, I think at times it can be
- 13:42Speaker 2: a little bit too much to where you kind of
- 13:44Speaker 2: freeze out there and you kind of get away from
- 13:46Speaker 2: doing what you know how to do best.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So here's my amateur analysis, very much amater analysis of
- 13:54Speaker 1: Kyle Bradish as someone hasn't pitched this little league and
- 13:57Speaker 1: has no the expert piece of of like of Brad,
- 14:01Speaker 1: but been around the game a lot. When I watched
- 14:03Speaker 1: the bradish from the centerfield camera, I see him throw
- 14:06Speaker 1: pitches that I go, oh, there he is. That's the
- 14:09Speaker 1: elite guy we look and others that don't have that
- 14:13Speaker 1: and word I would use is bite or finish on
- 14:16Speaker 1: some of these pitches. Like the slider got hit out today,
- 14:20Speaker 1: A bradish slider that has the finish and the bite.
- 14:24Speaker 1: He's not going to get to that. He keeps it
- 14:26Speaker 1: low on the zone, but that one just kind of
- 14:28Speaker 1: flattened out. Am I going to anything here? And if
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm not, feel free to call me crazy? Wouldn't be
- 14:33Speaker 1: the first time.
- 14:34Speaker 2: No, I think Steve, I think it's his mechanics seem
- 14:37Speaker 2: a little inconsistent right now. It kind of seems like
- 14:40Speaker 2: the fastball come in is so out of whack for
- 14:42Speaker 2: him and what he's used to that I think it's
- 14:45Speaker 2: kind of skewing everything just a little bit where everything's
- 14:48Speaker 2: just a little bit off. Like you said, that slider
- 14:50Speaker 2: didn't finish like it always does, And I think it
- 14:52Speaker 2: has a lot to do with his fastball command just
- 14:54Speaker 2: kind of being all over the places. His four team
- 14:57Speaker 2: is cutting extra. It seems like the two seam is
- 14:59Speaker 2: running at and he just doesn't have the bite like
- 15:02Speaker 2: you're saying on the pitches, and I think it could
- 15:04Speaker 2: just be like I said, I don't every guy has
- 15:06Speaker 2: a different key of what they're trying to do, so
- 15:09Speaker 2: I don't know if that is, but I think you're
- 15:10Speaker 2: onto something with that. I think something is just a
- 15:13Speaker 2: little bit off, and he finds it every three or
- 15:15Speaker 2: four pitches as opposed to four out of four pitches
- 15:17Speaker 2: or five out of five pitches. It just seems to
- 15:19Speaker 2: be a little bit off, and he's working hard on it,
- 15:22Speaker 2: and I think they're trying to get better. But it's
- 15:24Speaker 2: once you get out in the game, it speeds up
- 15:26Speaker 2: fast on you and it can get away really quick,
- 15:28Speaker 2: like we've seen in a couple of these outings.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Much of this, Brad, do you think is him coming
- 15:35Speaker 3: off the Tommy John surgery because he was able to
- 15:37Speaker 3: get a handful of starts or so a little bit
- 15:40Speaker 3: more than that last year at the end of last
- 15:42Speaker 3: season and pitched to a great success.
- 15:44Speaker 4: He really did.
- 15:45Speaker 3: But how much do you think it is some of
- 15:49Speaker 3: the surgery coming off of that?
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's definitely a huge part of it.
- 15:53Speaker 2: April three was always the toughest month to get into
- 15:55Speaker 2: a rhythm because you don't have enough to draw back on.
- 15:59Speaker 2: When you get to July, you have enough outings under
- 16:00Speaker 2: your belt that like, okay, one outing, two outings isn't
- 16:03Speaker 2: going to kill you, you have enough to draw it
- 16:05Speaker 2: back on. Okay, this is what I'm trying to do.
- 16:06Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying to do. I think right now
- 16:09Speaker 2: he's probably frustrated. He's trying to do everything he can
- 16:12Speaker 2: to get back to the picture that he knows he is,
- 16:14Speaker 2: and a lot of that's coming off the injury. It's
- 16:16Speaker 2: tough to do it early, and I think his lack
- 16:19Speaker 2: of success here to start the season is really just
- 16:21Speaker 2: kind of frustrating, and I think he's out there trying
- 16:24Speaker 2: to get it, and I think he sees slivers of
- 16:26Speaker 2: it there. He just really wants to piece it together
- 16:29Speaker 2: and do the outings that we're used to seeing Kyle
- 16:31Speaker 2: Bradish have.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, he spoilers. When he came back last year, he
- 16:36Speaker 1: was instantly good. Yeah, and it was like, well, where
- 16:40Speaker 1: are the ups and downs coming off Tommy John? It
- 16:42Speaker 1: was all ups. So now we're seeing that. And I've
- 16:45Speaker 1: seen enough pitchers coming back from Tommy John that I've
- 16:48Speaker 1: watched him pitch and it's like, Wow, he's fully back,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and the next start he's terrible. And it's this roller
- 16:53Speaker 1: coaster you ride for a time. Maybe he's riding it
- 16:56Speaker 1: right now, but again, we're seeing enough from him that
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's gonna kick in. I just really feel it's gonna
- 17:03Speaker 1: kick in. And then it gets good for Kyle Bradish
- 17:07Speaker 1: and better for the Orioles. Now, what a crazy weekend
- 17:11Speaker 1: in the other dugout and on the other team they
- 17:14Speaker 1: get blown out Friday night, And clearly that was like
- 17:17Speaker 1: the final straw. This was probably in the works for days,
- 17:21Speaker 1: the firing of Alex Cora. Five coaches left, including all
- 17:24Speaker 1: three hitting coaches who kind of took the fall for
- 17:28Speaker 1: their bad hitting year. So then they win seventeen to one,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and it happens after that, which clearly I think if
- 17:34Speaker 1: the game had gone off at four, maybe they would
- 17:37Speaker 1: have done it before. I don't know, Newton the noone.
- 17:40Speaker 1: They just could. The logistics didn't work to do everything
- 17:43Speaker 1: when they wanted to do it, I guess. But bizarre
- 17:45Speaker 1: weekend watching Boston media chasing down guys in hotels and
- 17:50Speaker 1: righting all kinds of things, and the players today didn't
- 17:53Speaker 1: seem really too great about this move. Just reading a
- 17:56Speaker 1: few quotes, what did you guys make of the last
- 17:59Speaker 1: twenty fo to forty eight hours for the Red Sox.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Got jam No, I was just gonna say it's shocking.
- 18:08Speaker 4: It was totally shocking. I couldn't believe it.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And look, this was an organization that they entered this
- 18:16Speaker 3: season with playoff aspirations. Absolutely, but we kind of knew
- 18:20Speaker 3: the flaws of this roster, right. The biggest question mark
- 18:24Speaker 3: about this roster was the lineup, and I think that
- 18:27Speaker 3: they probably put too much pressure on their young guys
- 18:30Speaker 3: and it just hasn't happened for them. But the starting
- 18:33Speaker 3: pitching hasn't been as dominant as we thought it would be,
- 18:36Speaker 3: because you thought, Okay, they're going to pitch themselves in
- 18:40Speaker 3: the contention, but it just hasn't happened. And they started
- 18:44Speaker 3: the season ten and seventeen. I still am shocked that
- 18:48Speaker 3: they pulled the plug that early on Alex Korra and
- 18:52Speaker 3: five other position coaches. That just seems a little rash
- 18:57Speaker 3: for me, and I know Breslo, so he admitted that, look,
- 19:01Speaker 3: you know, I could have done better in building this
- 19:03Speaker 3: roster up. But you heard multiple players today really upset
- 19:09Speaker 3: with the decision.
- 19:14Speaker 4: It went down.
- 19:15Speaker 3: And I think seeing how it would turn out on
- 19:18Speaker 3: the field today, I was sort of thinking it was
- 19:20Speaker 3: gonna be one way or the other that they would
- 19:22Speaker 3: win big or lose big talking about the Red Sox.
- 19:24Speaker 4: That ended up being a competitive game, of.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Course, But Brad, I can't even imagine what it was
- 19:31Speaker 3: like in that dugout and those guys saying that they
- 19:34Speaker 3: didn't really have much input, you know, that they didn't
- 19:37Speaker 3: really talk to him that much, you know, in terms
- 19:39Speaker 3: of how this all went down, I can't even imagine
- 19:43Speaker 3: what it was like in that clubhouse today and yesterday.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Yeah, And I thankfully never went through a season where
- 19:49Speaker 2: I had the manager fired in the middle of it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And I just remember hearing teenates who I've been through it,
- 19:53Speaker 2: and they say, it's just terrible. It's like you go
- 19:56Speaker 2: through all the spring training, you get to the season,
- 19:58Speaker 2: and then it's just this seismic earthquake that goes through everything,
- 20:02Speaker 2: and it's just really hard to deal with. And I
- 20:04Speaker 2: think this is just the beginning of it. I think
- 20:06Speaker 2: it's I think today they went out there and just
- 20:08Speaker 2: played baseball and it's gonna be. It looked fine. But
- 20:12Speaker 2: I just think there's there's too many shock waves that
- 20:14Speaker 2: got sent through that that clubhouse that I don't know
- 20:16Speaker 2: what's going to be said or done here in the
- 20:19Speaker 2: weeks ahead. I just can't see this thing ending all
- 20:22Speaker 2: that great for the Red Sox can either.
- 20:25Speaker 3: But Brad, like today literally marchs one month into the season, like, does.
- 20:32Speaker 4: This feel way too early?
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah? I think so. I mean, like we've talked about
- 20:38Speaker 2: for weeks now that the American League nobody's running away.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So if you believe in your roster a month ago,
- 20:44Speaker 2: what has changed so much that you had to fire
- 20:46Speaker 2: not just the manager but six other five other coaches?
- 20:50Speaker 2: It's like, I don't I don't really know. I don't
- 20:52Speaker 2: know what the expectations were there and how it could
- 20:54Speaker 2: change so fast in a month. But obviously the front
- 20:58Speaker 2: office saw differently and they needed a new voice. And
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't know if it's because a lot of these
- 21:01Speaker 2: younger guys had played for Chad Tracy and they wanted
- 21:04Speaker 2: to see what he could do, as the Toronto Blue
- 21:07Speaker 2: Jays did a few years ago John Schneider. So I
- 21:08Speaker 2: don't know if that was their thinking with this whole thing,
- 21:11Speaker 2: But yeah, it seems extreme to me to do it now,
- 21:14Speaker 2: And I don't know. I guess we'll just have to
- 21:16Speaker 2: see where it kind of goes from there for the
- 21:18Speaker 2: Red Sox.
- 21:19Speaker 3: And Steve, I was talking with a friend last night. Obviously,
- 21:23Speaker 3: something similar happened in Baltimore last year where Brandon Hyde
- 21:27Speaker 3: was fired prior to Memorial Day.
- 21:30Speaker 4: This beat that time by.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Three or four weeks and that was a big shock
- 21:35Speaker 3: when Brandon Hyde was let go. What was it May
- 21:37Speaker 3: seventeenth or whatever.
- 21:41Speaker 1: And tim Via winning percentage. The Red Sox were playing
- 21:44Speaker 1: better firing their manager than the Orioles were. At the
- 21:48Speaker 1: time of Brandon hides firing, which was May seventeenth, the
- 21:51Speaker 1: Orools were fifteen and twenty eight, that's three forty nine.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Ball Cora April twenty fifth, they were ten and seventeen,
- 21:57Speaker 1: that's three seventy Trevor story today. Game told reporters the
- 22:02Speaker 1: explanation we got from Craig Breslow and management was not
- 22:05Speaker 1: sufficient in terms of what we wanted to know about this.
- 22:09Speaker 1: He said, it's up in the air what the true
- 22:11Speaker 1: direction of the franchise is now. Fast forward a couple
- 22:14Speaker 1: hours after he said that, Oriole reporters are tweeting that
- 22:17Speaker 1: while they're waiting to interview out and as the cheering
- 22:21Speaker 1: was loud, they could hear it through the wall and
- 22:24Speaker 1: in the interview room. Mcamban yards from the visiting clubhouse,
- 22:28Speaker 1: so they were feeling a lot better a couple hours later.
- 22:31Speaker 1: We'll see where it goes from here. I agree with
- 22:33Speaker 1: you guys, that was fast. It's everything's I think ratcheted up.
- 22:37Speaker 1: In these markets where tim it's almost like life and
- 22:40Speaker 1: death every day, and that in Red Sox Nation, that's
- 22:43Speaker 1: kind of how they live. Definitely right crazy.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Yeah, the market, And we know how Boston fans are,
- 22:51Speaker 3: and they're not exactly very tolerant of slow starts and
- 22:57Speaker 3: poor baseball. But for this man, this just seems I
- 23:03Speaker 3: would have let this play out at least another month.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Two months, like one month into the season is still
- 23:10Speaker 3: just such a small sample size to pull the plug,
- 23:13Speaker 3: and especially with how much it seems like they ticked
- 23:16Speaker 3: off the clubhouse like you just I mean, Orioles fans.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I'm sure hope it ends up being a downward spiral,
- 23:22Speaker 3: but you know, if you're a Red Sox fan, you
- 23:25Speaker 3: just hope that this isn't a downward spiral from here
- 23:28Speaker 3: and really negatively affect the team even more.
- 23:32Speaker 1: One of the players said, paraphrasing, here, management essentially told
- 23:37Speaker 1: us it's our job to play ball and make the
- 23:40Speaker 1: money and keep our mouth shut. It doesn't seem like
- 23:44Speaker 1: the best message because you're all in it together, right,
- 23:48Speaker 1: You're not wanting to get one faction here. You're all
- 23:51Speaker 1: one organization. But listen, we're knocking the Red Sox at
- 23:54Speaker 1: a time where they just beat the Oils two out
- 23:55Speaker 1: of three, so they get the last laugh this weekend,
- 23:58Speaker 1: we'll see where it goes from here. Where we go
- 24:00Speaker 1: from here is talking about the Oorls young Catcher who
- 24:03Speaker 1: had some beautiful swings today. Man, it can't all be negative.
- 24:07Speaker 1: We got some stuff that's really fun to talk about
- 24:09Speaker 1: coming up.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Big Bad Morning Show Benny and Hany Inside Access Live
- 24:16Speaker 3: on YouTube weekdays six till six.

- 24:21Speaker 3: Subscribe for daily short's right to your phone and never
- 24:24Speaker 3: miss what you missed one O five seven the Fan.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah, subscribe to Birdland Territory, follow us on YouTube and
- 24:32Speaker 1: all the podcast channels. We're glad you found us, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: keep finding against. We have three shows every week, so
- 24:38Speaker 1: we're coming at you. Off it here on Birdland Territory. Man,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I love the swings of Asaio today. Two sweeper down
- 24:45Speaker 1: and a Way pokes it into left for a single
- 24:48Speaker 1: gets one on the inner half turns and hits that
- 24:50Speaker 1: on the flag court. Nine for sixteen is last game,
- 24:54Speaker 1: the last five couple homers. Fun to watch your swing
- 24:58Speaker 1: man when he's at it going, and I think he's
- 25:01Speaker 1: about to get it going, he already has started with that.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I really started to see it in Kansas City.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I thought the swings he was taken there were the
- 25:09Speaker 2: very different than he had been doing a couple weeks
- 25:11Speaker 2: before that. He was taking the ball away and hitting
- 25:14Speaker 2: it the other side. And for me, when I see
- 25:15Speaker 2: a power hitter start doing that, I get a little
- 25:18Speaker 2: worried to try to challenge inside because I know he's
- 25:21Speaker 2: willing to take a single the other way, keep the
- 25:23Speaker 2: bat in the zone, and when you try to sneak
- 25:25Speaker 2: up to buy him on the inside, he's going to
- 25:27Speaker 2: crank it onto the flag court nine times out of ten,
- 25:29Speaker 2: it feels like. So. I just really liked the swings
- 25:32Speaker 2: in Kansas City, and he started to seem to get
- 25:34Speaker 2: a little bit of confidence going too. When we like
- 25:37Speaker 2: we talked about Badlely going down, he got more regular
- 25:39Speaker 2: at bats, and I think sometimes that's all it takes.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And this, like I said, it might end up being
- 25:43Speaker 2: the silver lining of the season was kind of getting
- 25:45Speaker 2: seeing psio going and you're really starting to see it now.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He's starting to click and the swing looks really good.
- 25:50Speaker 4: It's a great point, Brad.
- 25:52Speaker 3: You can go back to that crazy extra innings game
- 25:55Speaker 3: in Kansas City that the Orioles ended up winning in
- 25:59Speaker 3: Samuel Basillo was he was the star of the game,
- 26:02Speaker 3: not just offensively where he came up with the game
- 26:05Speaker 3: tying hit in the ninth inning and the go ahead
- 26:07Speaker 3: run in the twelfth, but defensively, you know, just all
- 26:11Speaker 3: of those blocks where that was when Bradish was thrown
- 26:13Speaker 3: breaking ball off the breaking ball in the dirt and
- 26:16Speaker 3: nothing was getting by Sam. I think he's just playing
- 26:20Speaker 3: with so much confidence right now.
- 26:21Speaker 4: And something that's so big.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Is I feel like early on in the year he
- 26:27Speaker 3: was pressing and expanding the zone and you saw the
- 26:31Speaker 3: strikeouts really elevated.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Well, you can go back to April twelfth.
- 26:35Speaker 3: He's got five strikeouts to five walks, four home runs
- 26:40Speaker 3: since April twelfth as well, the batting average is way up,
- 26:43Speaker 3: way over three hundred in that span.
- 26:47Speaker 4: He's really in a nice groove right now.
- 26:51Speaker 2: And the one thing I would I meant to say
- 26:53Speaker 2: on earlier shows was. When you think about a rookie catcher,
- 26:55Speaker 2: how much is coming on his plate. He's trying to
- 26:58Speaker 2: learn all the pictures he's getting, he's trying to learn
- 27:00Speaker 2: the opposing hitters. Oh yeah, and he's trying to hit
- 27:03Speaker 2: at the major league level. Every single one of those
- 27:05Speaker 2: aspects is hard enough as it is, but doing all
- 27:08Speaker 2: three of them, for those aspects, whatever is being thrown
- 27:11Speaker 2: at him, it's just a lot. It takes a while
- 27:13Speaker 2: for you to finally get your feet under you and
- 27:17Speaker 2: get the season go.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Brad, How would it be as a pitcher working with
- 27:22Speaker 3: a twenty one year old catcher and he you know,
- 27:26Speaker 3: he's still learning behind the dish as well. But it's funny,
- 27:30Speaker 3: you know, you think of a Chris Bassett, for example,
- 27:33Speaker 3: who's thirty seven years old, been there, done that, who's
- 27:36Speaker 3: been very complimentary about Sam Besillo when he's pitched to him.
- 27:41Speaker 3: How would that be from a pitcher's perspective working with
- 27:44Speaker 3: a rookie catcher.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, as you get older, you've learned some
- 27:47Speaker 2: tips and stuff like that. So if with the younger catcher,
- 27:50Speaker 2: I would just go and have conversations with him, not
- 27:51Speaker 2: even I mean about baseball obviously, but other stuff. Just
- 27:55Speaker 2: get to know him, so he starts to feel comfortable
- 27:57Speaker 2: and you kind of just want to make him feel
- 27:59Speaker 2: comfortable with you as a person and a player. So
- 28:02Speaker 2: when you get out there, it's kind of, hey, if
- 28:03Speaker 2: you got a suggestion, throw it down. If not, I'm
- 28:06Speaker 2: I'm going to throw what I know to make you
- 28:07Speaker 2: feel the best you can behind the play. And that's
- 28:10Speaker 2: just the way I would go about it, and I'm
- 28:11Speaker 2: sure that's what most of the guys are doing, and
- 28:14Speaker 2: starters obviously he's going to catch them a little bit
- 28:16Speaker 2: more than relievers, and it's kind of just take that
- 28:18Speaker 2: one aspect off his plate. Let him go back there
- 28:20Speaker 2: and do what he does. Block the pitches, but you
- 28:23Speaker 2: call your own game one time, or hey, if you
- 28:25Speaker 2: you know, like next outing, I'm going to go out
- 28:27Speaker 2: there and I'm working out, I want to do this.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Let's start with this, and then you don't so you
- 28:31Speaker 2: don't have to worry about me when I come in
- 28:32Speaker 2: the game type thing. If that makes any sense. You
- 28:35Speaker 2: just kind of want to take everything you can off
- 28:36Speaker 2: of young players play because there's so much going on
- 28:39Speaker 2: and when I remember when Caleb Joseph got called up
- 28:41Speaker 2: in twenty fourteen, his first time up. He's trying to
- 28:44Speaker 2: learn all this stuff, and this is before the technology
- 28:46Speaker 2: that we had to kind of take all that stuff
- 28:48Speaker 2: off his plate. He's learned how to do all this
- 28:50Speaker 2: stuff at one point, and we're on a division winning team.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So I just remember him going through it and that
- 28:56Speaker 2: it gave me a perspective of I'm going to do
- 28:58Speaker 2: everything I can to try to help my team out
- 29:00Speaker 2: during this process and have him to have one thing
- 29:03Speaker 2: less to worry about.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And I'll say two things for Brasio. And I've known
- 29:08Speaker 1: him a lot almost since the day they signed him,
- 29:10Speaker 1: interviewed him many times. Man, his English dramatically has improved
- 29:14Speaker 1: over the years. I think that's showing everybody in your organization.
- 29:17Speaker 1: He wants to communicate as effectly he can every day
- 29:21Speaker 1: that he can, whether it's media, pitchers, whatever. And last
- 29:25Speaker 1: year late I think he did enough good things to
- 29:28Speaker 1: show the staff this guy's not going to be a disaster.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Back here. We heard some things that were in you know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: who knows how he's going to be. He wants to
- 29:37Speaker 1: do it and he's working hard, and I think he
- 29:40Speaker 1: started to win them over then, which gave him a
- 29:43Speaker 1: nice jump start for this year. And we'll get into
- 29:46Speaker 1: this in a later times. We're run out of time
- 29:47Speaker 1: for today, but I want to talk to you guys
- 29:49Speaker 1: in a later episode about what his batting average might be,
- 29:53Speaker 1: because when you flick that ball and left for a
- 29:55Speaker 1: single like you did, a lot of power hitters don't
- 29:57Speaker 1: do that. Man, They rolled that ball over for a
- 30:00Speaker 1: ground out. And I'm not saying he's going to hit
- 30:02Speaker 1: three hundred because he didn't even do that in the minors.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But I'm not saying I think he's going to be
- 30:06Speaker 1: better than two twenty five or something like that. So
- 30:08Speaker 1: I mean, they've really got something special here. It's going
- 30:11Speaker 1: to be fun to watch him blossom over this seat. Guys.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Nice to end on a high note when the weekend
- 30:18Speaker 1: wasn't that. The oriole and another edition of Birdland Territory
- 30:23Speaker 1: comes almost to an end. So thanks Tim and thanks Brad.
- 30:26Speaker 1: We'll see you guys coming up this week and those
- 30:28Speaker 1: fans will see you too. Thanks for joining us today
- 30:31Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory.
