- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:42blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:46Now, anybody might think that five episodes.
- 0:49Yeah, five episodes into a doctor who story that two fine
- 0:55gentlemen would be flagging but not this pair.
- 0:58I have here today with the Glorious.
- 1:01Fraser Gregory say hello Frasier.
- 1:03Hello Frasier. Now Fraser we should point out
- 1:06that there has been a small break between us The last
- 1:10episode and this how long has it been?
- 1:12It's been a couple of weeks and I have thoughts been stewing in
- 1:17your mind about the ambassador's of deaths in the Sin 1 or 2, 1
- 1:21or 2. But I think mostly it's going to
- 1:23be a case of crank. Think have I said this already?
- 1:26You know what every time I split these things up when I did
- 1:29Darlings master plan R square R said the same things about 16
- 1:32times you know throw that commentary.
- 1:35Well I know I'll say the same thing about 16 times in this
- 1:37one. Well we've got it.
- 1:40Yeah, I know you'll say that a lot but honestly, no bigger
- 1:44sensor in my life than you. I'm telling you you are new to
- 1:48me. But she said that a few times.
- 1:49Yeah, I know. So I'm going to, I'm going to
- 1:52start with a question for you drool.
- 1:54I like fighting. What's happened in this story so
- 1:57far? What?
- 2:00Oh, fuck off in abbas's death. Are you kidding me?
- 2:04It's such a complicated story. Okay, so there, okay, so there's
- 2:09Space shuttles have come together at the beginning.
- 2:13One was out of contact for a little while and Man Fan
- 2:18luncheons went inside and screaming his head off at
- 2:22something. Coming at him out of the other
- 2:25space shuttle. Then they managed to regain
- 2:27contact with the shuttle. Bring it down to earth secret
- 2:32government forces. Very X-Files are then attempting
- 2:35to steal the shuttle for unknown reasons it.
- 2:38That's true. Inspires that they are three
- 2:41Ambassador. Oh no, we don't know yet.
- 2:43There are three creepy space-suited people that have
- 2:48come a been taken from the shuttle are now being held in
- 2:50captivity by superbomb villain Reagan fabulous.
- 2:55Lesure was kidnapped. Got Away was kidnapped again.
- 2:59So we were obviously killing a bit of time there.
- 3:01Can a fabulous Daring Do stunts over a we're in an amazing white
- 3:06hat with to play music and Why did we end it?
- 3:10Oh, and the doctor is getting suspicious about government
- 3:14activities that are occurring. So he's doing a bit
- 3:17investigation in some quinlan's office and an ambassador comes
- 3:24into the room and starts to come towards him.
- 3:28You watch? Yes, yes.
- 3:30Thank you so much. Where we left off.
- 3:32Last time was Sir, James Quinlan, who is, who was behind
- 3:37the first capture of the earliest of the earnings are
- 3:39being captured and then captured by someone else.
- 3:41So, he was behind the first capture, and he has now been
- 3:45murdered by the ambassador's who have done that wonderful,
- 3:49Michael Ferguson thing of walking.
- 3:53Head towards the camera with a low setting sun behind them.
- 3:57They've went into his office, Zapped him under the are now
- 4:02about to zap Doctor Who I've got a question for you, then before
- 4:06we go one. Do you think?
- 4:08Because I think there's something to this, you know.
- 4:10Do you think there is something about monsters that are slow,
- 4:18but unrelenting because I think it works really well here.
- 4:22Here. Like, you know, these bastards
- 4:23are going to do some damage but they're in a hurry.
- 4:25Are they warm? Air is the mummies in pyramids
- 4:28of Mars? The robots and robots are deaf?
- 4:31Yep. Yeah.
- 4:32The sort of the ice Wario's the rock songs as well.
- 4:39You know, very again, Michael Ferguson bit of a thing, isn't
- 4:42it? But yeah, that that whole idea
- 4:44of it's like the Cybermen as well.
- 4:46That's one of the reasons I always preferred the Cybermen to
- 4:49the Daleks is because the Cybermen just keep coming and
- 4:52Anton Coleman, you know, the Daleks commit, certain shout,
- 4:55and shout and being shouted, you entered your stop.
- 4:58Them was the Cybermen. Just just kind of keep coming.
- 5:01So there's definitely there's definitely in something in that
- 5:04and I think it might be it's that idea that they're going to
- 5:08tie you out, eventually you're going to get tired and you run
- 5:11anymore, but they will keep coming and then they're going to
- 5:13get. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 5:16Wow, should we watch the ambassador's in action?
- 5:19Then we should do. Yes, so episode Add five.
- 5:22I'm ready to go on your counters in.
- 5:25So in 5 4, 3 2 1 go off we go. The Marvelous Pertwee knows like
- 5:40staring up Twin Tunnels and you're so, he said, but you're
- 5:43watching this on blue blue, yet on DVD or brick box?
- 5:48On brick box Fox. I think I watched this on brick
- 5:53box. The first record and block, but
- 5:55I've got the DVD or now. I would recommend anyone to go
- 5:58get the DVD because it has got a really superb common tree.
- 6:04Is this? The commentary where is got?
- 6:06The stunt men on one side. Yes, and that's how little these
- 6:09stories about down down the market.
- 6:11What they used to, like, get up to Mischief down the labor
- 6:14markets. It's really funny.
- 6:16It's me, but it's honest, it's got em, it's got ten sticks on
- 6:18it, it's got Nick Courtney on it, it's got Maple Ferguson on.
- 6:21It's got Kerry John on it, it's got its got so many people who
- 6:27would not go to hear a talk about Doctor Who again.
- 6:30Unfortunately, so I would highly recommend I think Toby, hey, Had
- 6:34a big hand in this company because he moderates this one,
- 6:37doesn't it? Because yes, he was talking on
- 6:40his podcast the other day about how he used to get really angry
- 6:43but the commentaries were being done, but the none of like the
- 6:47big contributors were being contacted.
- 6:49Us are well, maybe they're dead or maybe they're like, no one
- 6:53was making a lot of effort, and then he was asked to come in and
- 6:56put some of these commentaries together.
- 6:58This, I remember reading running record with.
- 7:00This is one of his all-time favorite story.
- 7:02Yes. So I bet he assembled this all
- 7:04of Alias commentary cast precisely for the of.
- 7:07Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 7:10So there is a big question that's going to come up in this
- 7:13in this story. Is it about Sergeant Benson?
- 7:16It is about Sergeant Benson who is going to make an appearance
- 7:19in regards to this chocolate on the screen now.
- 7:21Dr. Lennox on the question is who kills dr.
- 7:25Lennox. Well, why does all suspicion
- 7:28fall onto Benton? Because I know he comes in and
- 7:30he's a bit. He behaves very strangely he saw
- 7:32it goes. Yeah right sir I was Don't and
- 7:35like I've kind of sinister way I mean well I think well when we
- 7:40get to that soon will answer that question fully because
- 7:42there is a very definite answer to that.
- 7:46But here he is now making he's it's not easy dear viewers
- 7:51because he was in The Invasion first but this is the sort of
- 7:55yeah yeah. First introduction into the sort
- 7:57of the, the Pertwee era saw. So I've got a question for you
- 8:01gone. Is it Benton or you?
- 8:05It's what? Who's the better character?
- 8:08Who do you thinks the back? How do you think it was?
- 8:10Your favorite Benton? Are you?
- 8:11It I think Benson's better a more entertaining character.
- 8:16I think Yates ultimately is a more interesting character that
- 8:19might sound like a bit of a cop-out.
- 8:21I don't think they really like they do.
- 8:23Lots of fun things with Benton and he gets to go off in the
- 8:25Tardis and three doctors, and he gets to bop some, you know,
- 8:29General and the nose and he gets all the fun stuff.
- 8:32You know what I think? In terms of like a character
- 8:35Arc, might get some more interesting story.
- 8:40So, yeah, I would say that bent and gets just as good.
- 8:42A character Arc, has the, a think I think.
- 8:45Yeah. Because nobody's got a sister
- 8:47and that he goes off ballroom dancing with her.
- 8:49I mean, yeah. It's as cutoff is basically
- 8:52based around the fact that he gets introduced to hippies in
- 8:54the green death becomes a hippie invasion of the dinosaurs and
- 8:58you know, redeems himself to a certain extent.
- 9:00The planet of the spiders, I think Benton's Arc is Is very
- 9:04similar, you know, they are to essentially, you know, very
- 9:08similar characters you know brought in a take a bit of the
- 9:10Lord off the brig in bringing a bit of you know, the family,
- 9:15feel to what's going on with unit.
- 9:18You've got your tutors, the sort of flash Captain, you've got
- 9:20bent and as the very solid and dependable Soldier.
- 9:25Essentially, you know, they both go on the same Journey but, you
- 9:29know, making it scores off. In Patrice units, a very dark
- 9:34direction that know you expecting.
- 9:36Yeah, it's it's Justified. One's interested in.
- 9:40But at the same token, you in the same story Benton,
- 9:43absolutely holds his ground and stands down and says, nope, this
- 9:46is this is the right thing. So you know, you know, I think
- 9:51the most interesting Benson story is I think is Inferno
- 9:54where you see what our fucking sadist.
- 9:58He might have been under different circumstances like
- 10:01they say there's no such A sign of our congenial.
- 10:03Lovely, mr. Benson are, is it abnormal
- 10:06bully? And a sadist is horrible.
- 10:09Yeah, and you get, you get something out but a monster
- 10:12which is very bent in Centric rice, which is had to bring that
- 10:15up in you Benson in a nappy, it's just a weird from all
- 10:19angles trying to do a million things badly but it's is
- 10:29ambitious. Its ambitious but it is so Just
- 10:32we are different and you just don't know who where it's come
- 10:36from or anything. Do you know anything?
- 10:39Like we're watching the ambassador's of death.
- 10:41The time most is just a world away from the ambassador's of
- 10:45the everything in terms of everything, it's a world away
- 10:48from everything. If you watch the time monster
- 10:50and you watch the rest of every other unit story, it is
- 10:54massively different from everything else.
- 10:55I mean, even I think I mentioned previously that, you know, Klaus
- 10:59of ox Ox would fit very well in this series.
- 11:01He's, you know, you can, you know, the mind of Evil's got
- 11:05some some good elements carried over from ambassadors as well
- 11:09and all the units stories seemed, you know, all
- 11:13identifiable as units always, then watch the time on Steam,
- 11:15think this is Doctor Who done by.
- 11:19People who don't know what they're doing.
- 11:21Who've never done Doctor, Who it's very less is caving.
- 11:33He's escaping about the writing the direction, that's why they
- 11:36should be. It's just saw off kilter and
- 11:38yeah different from everything else.
- 11:40But yep, invasion of the dinosaurs is definitely Benton's
- 11:43finest moment for me because that's the point where you'll
- 11:45you ate the board made a decision yet has decided duck.
- 11:49To you know, betray everyone go with operation.
- 11:53Golden Age, Benton has has that lovely lovely scene where he's
- 11:56like literally you know, he's been told to lock up the doctor
- 12:00and he just goes this isn't right, I trust you implicitly do
- 12:04you venusian? He drew honors and that's just
- 12:07the defining moment of bending is that loyalty and that and you
- 12:11know, he just knows what's right and follows through with it, you
- 12:16could rephrase the question. If you said to me, who would I
- 12:18rather Hang wave, Bentley, nice Benson.
- 12:21By a mile. Are they makes a bloody great
- 12:23cup or as well? Oh, yes, I probably get a fine
- 12:27Chianti from my Yates. You know, that's all Gorgonzola.
- 12:33One back. The big question of who kills
- 12:35dr. Lennox is.
- 12:37It Liz sure. Because Liz Shaw sends him out.
- 12:39This short, talk them into going leaving, you know, this is
- 12:46uniquely. Yes, it's a technicality.
- 12:48Well there's quite a few caught that is we're going to say, so
- 12:52Liz is still, she doesn't send him there.
- 12:54No, he's gonna die. Obviously, I know why she
- 12:56wouldn't make that call. No, but she she pushes and
- 12:59pushes him and says, you know, you know, really goes to work
- 13:01but I'm and really, you know, gets under his skin and says,
- 13:04you know, you're working for a murder out with had the scene
- 13:06where and you know Regan's come back with the ambassadors and
- 13:11he's loving, it needs Boston. And he said, well what touch
- 13:15from these in the drop like flies and I can rob a bank, I
- 13:18could The bank of England do Fort Knox and you know Liz is
- 13:22really went to town with Lennox and said you know you are the
- 13:25only one who can get out of here, go to the unit go to
- 13:28Brigadier, you know he'll he'll look after you the sort of
- 13:31thing. So does Liz have a bit of
- 13:33culpability in the death of dr. Lennox.
- 13:36Yes, definitely. But she is not the person that
- 13:40took an isotope into his cell. No Norton.
- 13:42That is absolutely Grim. That will let you know what I
- 13:45like though. I like you don't find out who
- 13:47that was, but But the implication is someone from
- 13:51within unit is in Carrington's pocket.
- 13:54Well, and that's quite nice. That's very X-Files, isn't it?
- 13:58Yeah. What was the fellows name?
- 14:02Alex krycek when he was brought in in series 2 and he was
- 14:05supposed to be mold as new partner while stealing Anderson
- 14:07was not having a baby. Yeah.
- 14:09And and then at the end of the episode, he turned out to be a
- 14:12traitor. Maybe they could have done more
- 14:14with that mind you. That is what they do.
- 14:16In invasion of dinosaurs, isn't it?
- 14:17Yeah. It's the traitor.
- 14:19Then and I use really ghost town with that.
- 14:21You said, evasion advice, was Benton's finest hour.
- 14:24I think it's Yates is as well. I think it's just magnificently
- 14:27over underrated. Sorry - all's or definitely.
- 14:32Definitely. It's one of these ones where the
- 14:34production value is, is see, you know, what, pad busy, people's
- 14:40opinion of it, you know, cheap dinosaurs.
- 14:42And again it goes back to that receive fun wisdom, which is
- 14:45built around a couple of books that were released in the 80s
- 14:47and, you know, people Then because the haven't had the
- 14:50chance to watch it again and so on.
- 14:52And so forth is featuring such obscene, left-wing extremists,
- 14:57that are so, contentious, that even sigh Heart.
- 15:01Lost his temper, was it? He did.
- 15:06So he has the next corporate / suspect for the different
- 15:10products, the Brigadier because Lennox turns up Don't you
- 15:15Slaughter the brigadier's? They oh no, Lucy mokou on you.
- 15:19No, no because Lennox is turned up.
- 15:22He spoke to Benton, but in rings, the brigand says, quite
- 15:25clearly. There's a man here who know
- 15:26something about the missing us? You cannot a dr.
- 15:28Lennox, it wants to speak to your nearest speak only to you.
- 15:31And what does the brick do? But why would the Brigadier be
- 15:35trying to bring Carrington down? Know what does the brick do?
- 15:38The brig says, put him in a Cell.
- 15:41I've got some Security checks to do.
- 15:43Why isn't the Brigid? Yeah cool one I will come speak
- 15:46to this man straight away. Little jaw is missing.
- 15:49Do you think this script is deliberately throwing out?
- 15:51Red herrings. The script is, is deliberately
- 15:55leading us to the death of dr. Next it's a bit more padding
- 15:57because realistically Brigadier lethbridge-stewart would be like
- 16:01this man is invaluable. I'm going to be here right now.
- 16:04Ben and you go do the checks. Someone else go do the checks.
- 16:07I don't need to do the checks. I'm a brigadier.
- 16:09This man's only going to speak to me.
- 16:10I need to speak to him straight away, but he put it off and
- 16:13gives them the opportunity to You know, Murder them
- 16:21essentially but it also gives us this absolutely fantastic seat
- 16:24now, which is the doctor, the Brigadier C in B of the doctor
- 16:27which is again just one of those lovely moments that we don't get
- 16:32after. It seems very Gentile of weight
- 16:34whether or not I was all. Yeah, I've done all the tests.
- 16:36Yeah, they were, they were piece of piss.
- 16:38See, it's just, that's the look between them of this is just
- 16:41absolute, mutual respect and admiration between the two of
- 16:45them, which you don't get Again by the time.
- 16:47The next series, the doctor is making Media the book of these
- 16:50jokes and everything I got and it's just they are?
- 16:53Why did why could we not have more scenes like this and going
- 16:57back to a Lennox very quickly? Do you think like the deaths of
- 17:02guest characters or anybody in Doctor Who like they never a
- 17:05mystery? Are they, they're always know
- 17:08killed by a monster. Can do you think the reason why
- 17:11and them collectively as obsessed over?
- 17:13This particular one is because we never get an answer.
- 17:16I think it's just because We don't get a full answer but we
- 17:21do get a big clue coming up right now lovely seeing where
- 17:25he's held a gun to Liz, got the information out of our throws at
- 17:29door. He's under Lynn says look after
- 17:31take care of her and she is don't worry I won't hurt you
- 17:34which was a lovely evening then he gets on the phone.
- 17:38He gets the direct line to whoever's in charge who tells
- 17:41them that the doctors about to blast off.
- 17:43And he says rate, I'll take care of the doctor, you take care of
- 17:47Lennox. Who says that Regan Regan says,
- 17:52on the phone to whoever is on the phone to, right?
- 17:54I'll take care of the doctor, you take care of Lenox So why
- 17:59don't they tell us who it is? It?
- 18:00Why do we never find out? Because the person that was on
- 18:03the phone to is the person that's at the Cliffhanger of
- 18:05episode six, who would not supposed to know who it is?
- 18:09Who's the spiders? Could be eight years.
- 18:12If you haven't seen this, if you're watching on for the first
- 18:14time, it's coming tonight. He's on the phone-a Carrington.
- 18:20Yeah. But I think Aaron's is then he's
- 18:22got something there, someone in within unity, in his pocket
- 18:24because that's a unit facility, isn't it Carrington?
- 18:27And you can happen. Until it goes in with the
- 18:29isotope. Yeah, yeah, I mean we know
- 18:33they're working together. They absolutely reveal that
- 18:35before the end of the story. Yeah.
- 18:38Oh my God, I love all of this as he goes and runs around.
- 18:42All the pipes, I love the bit just before the papers, where
- 18:47the doctors in the rocket being very Parisian Bowman, just Blast
- 18:50Off mad, the g-force doesn't bother me.
- 18:52Pinned, good old rygel is sitting there going it'll bother
- 18:56you if the rocket blows up on the phone.
- 18:58Each part. No not mr.
- 19:00So he's ego is big enough. He'll survive, that it's popped.
- 19:05You can literally hear the pop Benny was, ah, okay.
- 19:11That's why this doctor needed this doctor needed more moments
- 19:14like this where he has his legal pot Jewel Grant does a
- 19:16beautifully, you know, from season nine and season 10.
- 19:20Yeah, onwards. But it just need more moments
- 19:22like this but and Regan. Yeah, climb through the pipes.
- 19:25Just so technically competent isn't it?
- 19:28Yeah, it's Sam, I think. So hot asked us a question,
- 19:32didn't you? And he said, why isn't Regan?
- 19:34Okay. So one more question because he
- 19:37is a very memorable character and it's no one really like
- 19:40people talk about school, be from seeds to do all the time
- 19:44who have a like well-known henchmen.
- 19:46Like what is no crack starts from?
- 19:49Yeah it's Rangers Arnie. So what is no one talked about
- 19:52this guy, honestly, don't know. I mean he he's got these.
- 19:56The full package is really Sinister.
- 19:59I'll write out. Your boy has he got the full
- 20:00package? Yeah, but he's really Charming
- 20:03with it. He's really fleshed out as well.
- 20:08And I feel you know what this you know the teaching us angles
- 20:13are Max and an industrial setting.
- 20:15This is season seven to me when I think of season seven and hold
- 20:18up lady think of his pipes and what those enormous.
- 20:21Does inferno, the gas cylinders? Yeah, you know at the sort of
- 20:25Stark location work that they do for out this season.
- 20:31It's definitely a tone, isn't it?
- 20:347, definitely. Deaf hearing here.
- 20:39So the doctors in the Regan's just switch the fuel.
- 20:44They again, fantastic bit for this series, for this story is
- 20:48the level of detail in the signs.
- 20:50It's, they've got ya. One type of few about the can
- 20:53use, which is see, if they've got an experimental one, which
- 20:55blast them off too quick, and Regan has put the experimental
- 20:59morning and you will had conversations all around this
- 21:01its proper sci-fi. But you know what, this is done
- 21:04correctly as well. Three hours, long story.
- 21:06They've got the I'm to do it have a night and it is a
- 21:09question. I want to ask you about
- 21:11long-form storytelling, because I think, within this story, we
- 21:16get a chance to have some very complex characterization, not
- 21:20science, like you say some really tasty set pieces.
- 21:25Yep. So, do you think that the new
- 21:29series lacks some of those things for telling an episode in
- 21:3545 minutes? Good because you know B by just
- 21:40the sheer amount of time you have to tell a story here to
- 21:42say, I don't know, I'll put any episode of the are the Lazarus
- 21:45experiment, you know, you do not have the time to do incredibly
- 21:49complex characterization long dialogue scenes, you couldn't do
- 21:55any of this stuff so couldn't which is which is the for you
- 22:00which is the better approach. I'm going to part like question
- 22:02for a minute because he has the scene that we've been leading up
- 22:05to which is The death of Doppler.
- 22:08Next, first thing I want to say is this is truly a horrendous
- 22:12way to handle someone. You know, this is not a quick
- 22:16death. If you, you know, give someone a
- 22:19radioactive isotope that it's not instant.
- 22:21It is very slow, very long, very painful, the way that type of
- 22:25Linux is going to die. And you can tell that by the
- 22:27fear on his his face, you know, so shops, they're just being
- 22:31absolutely magnificent. Do you know though?
- 22:33I think some of the the deaths in seven Are some of the
- 22:37scariest you go. See would remember it before we
- 22:40saw the people being buried in the gravel.
- 22:42Yeah, there's a sequence in space hyphen space where the guy
- 22:46comes off the road and his face is mangled through the screen,
- 22:49and it's a bit comical, but there's a bit in Inferno that
- 22:53chills me to the Bone, where one of the characters has the green
- 22:56slime. Yeah, literally, smeared on his
- 22:59face and he's screaming his head off.
- 23:01It's really a dull. It is the work every death for
- 23:04everything. It's worth in the series.
- 23:06Not kind like throw away. And I get becomes with, you
- 23:10know, my top Scabbard, and I would say it would have been to
- 23:13scare the little fuckers and I. Yeah, but I mean that seems to
- 23:17the soldier comes in. Gives them says, I've got some
- 23:20food and I think the reason why everyone thinks it's bent and is
- 23:22because it sounds a little bit like Sergeant Benton.
- 23:27So I don't know if they've just had John Devine doing a bit of
- 23:30extra voiceover work, or whether it's wrong.
- 23:32I'm an Aries, come in and done some You know, work and tried to
- 23:37disguise his voice a bit. But I think the reason everyone
- 23:39thinks this is bent this because it sounds a little bit like
- 23:41Benton. So just to completely dispel
- 23:44that myth, that it is not Benton, okay?
- 23:47And one it is made very, you know, unclear as to who it is.
- 23:54You know, the person that's delivering, the isotope is
- 23:56hidden for a very good reason so we don't know who it is.
- 24:00Secondly, the script tells us very clearly who it is.
- 24:03The script says, as I've said, you know, the person that Regan
- 24:06is on the It was the person that is going to run off Lennox with
- 24:09little find out. That's General coming in in the
- 24:11third and most vital bit of evidence that I'm going to
- 24:14present for the fact that this is not Sergeant Benton
- 24:16callanetics, is that Terrance dicks says, so Evan sticks in
- 24:21the comic mean, this is why you need to go and buy the DVD
- 24:23because ten sticks in the comment, me the address this
- 24:25tool Behavior, brings it up and down sticks.
- 24:27As our got notes cost is not Benton, no ten sticks.
- 24:30And makes it clear that that line of dialogue where he seen
- 24:35you You'll deal with the doctor you deal with Lennox is clear
- 24:40that person. He's talking to is the person
- 24:42that's going to go until the next and that person is coming
- 24:44and so Kevin stick says, or he will Turtle case closed.
- 24:49I want no way, I'm going to muddy the waters a little bit.
- 24:51Come on. This is going to be there is
- 24:53Benson guilty episode right to the end because I don't think
- 24:58anyone ever Ashley States. Yeah, I murdered Lennox.
- 25:03No, we're making an assumption there.
- 25:06I think that this was a script that was by a terroristic, his
- 25:10own admission, cobbled together from several previous drafts.
- 25:14So there's a bit of confusion within the writing and I
- 25:18genuinely think there is a red herring there.
- 25:23The Benton could possibly be the person I can and I think perhaps
- 25:27because Hulk is clearly. Capable of saying, one of the
- 25:30regulars can do wrong invasion of the dinosaurs.
- 25:36Yeah, so if that was even a possibility, it was just a dead
- 25:42end, the didn't go anywhere, you know, and they fought know,
- 25:44we're going to have fun with this character and we're going
- 25:45to take him elsewhere but I don't mean us a definitive.
- 25:49No he didn't. I think it's a maybe he could
- 25:52have, but nothing is ever confirmed and I think that's
- 25:56great. That's that's, that's cool.
- 25:58It's absolutely fantastic. It's pardon, you know, we
- 26:01thought this story is padded throughout, but it's padded with
- 26:05ten sticks and Michael pardon, which is the best pattern.
- 26:08You can get what we need is a big finish story.
- 26:11Now, we're on his deathbed. He goes and I killed letter
- 26:15comes along. We need that little big finish
- 26:20vignette. We're coming to indoors to
- 26:22lennox's, we do and our children and what not and to make amends.
- 26:26But all right. So I want to refine my question
- 26:28to you because Before you do that, go on before you do that.
- 26:32I just want to point out Jon Pertwee with a hair tie, your
- 26:36needs. It's hello.
- 26:37That was his idea. My folks are steady.
- 26:40No, no, it wasn't a hetero. It was an industrial.
- 26:42Don't steal blower. Yeah, it's just your father, I
- 26:44beg your pardon and Industrial blower.
- 26:47Excuse me, stop it. My book, it's worse.
- 26:51But it takes you back to make the Ferguson's previous.
- 26:54See what? For Doctor Who, which is the
- 26:56seeds of death. Yeah.
- 26:58Whoo. Whoo.
- 26:59Whoo. They were holding their faces
- 27:02like this tightrope, a Hinds and Wendy pad.
- 27:05We have to pull their faces back to Denny without affecting its,
- 27:09I just loved one how it gets away from have a bit of a tweak.
- 27:15Earning probably loves again, but we'll move away from that.
- 27:19And it's a nice sort of a field development in, you know, make
- 27:24the Ferguson's technical skills as well that we get.
- 27:27A different way of showing G-Force on TV.
- 27:30So anyhow, the question you were asking when I weighed you.
- 27:32Remember the the third example of G-Force in Doctor Who it's
- 27:36Sarah Jane in the Android Invasion episode free where
- 27:38she's going and that's the cliff, I know.
- 27:45Okay, so my refined version of the question is this is I want
- 27:47to talk about characterization because I think that's somewhere
- 27:50where the ambassador's of test scores very highly and I think
- 27:54it's long-form storytelling, it takes place over.
- 27:57Episodes it affords. The time to get us to know the
- 28:00characters and do complex things with them and to understand
- 28:03their motives and all of this. And I think the new series does
- 28:07do that. Yeah.
- 28:08But it does it very economically very briefly.
- 28:11And on the whole with a lot less depth.
- 28:16Yeah. You know, you know, I know, I
- 28:18don't know, Lazarus far less than I understand Carrington in
- 28:21this. Yeah, no, no, no, absolutely.
- 28:24And I think there's a balance to be struck to be Us because
- 28:28you're absolutely right. We have seven episodes here so
- 28:31we can go to town with things. Like I was set pieces.
- 28:34We're going to have helicopters, drop them gas bombs.
- 28:38We can have, you know, people learn along we as we can go to
- 28:42town in the characterization, we're going to have loads of
- 28:44scenes with is, you know, working and on Lennox before you
- 28:48actually does it. We can upload scenes between the
- 28:51doctor and the Brigadeiro. And I voted to scenes, you know,
- 28:54with Regan and Carrington and kind.
- 28:57You see getting to know them. And with the shorter form, what
- 29:01you need to do is if you're going to have those moments you
- 29:04need to get through them really quickly.
- 29:06So you need things like a sonic. Yeah you basically what you need
- 29:10is a sonic screwdriver that can do everything and psychic paper
- 29:15that can be psychic paper, that sort of thing.
- 29:17So you don't have the benefit of that wonderful scene in episode
- 29:19one with the doctor storm and at the Space Center control and
- 29:23having a showdown with love. Cornish, which, you know, takes
- 29:28a couple of minutes, but it's, you know, again it gives you Joy
- 29:32class of introductions to both their characters.
- 29:35So you miss that in the, in the new series, we can get those
- 29:40kind of moments. But it comes at the cost of
- 29:42things like plot, which is probably where for me, the RTD
- 29:46Ruffles down a lot is because you have a very quick open and
- 29:50you have a lot of character detail, and then you have a very
- 29:53quick ending, you know, it's you have that sort of DS ending of
- 29:57Oh, well, yeah, that's Jesus or the box is much thicker.
- 30:01Sock them all into this black hole or whatever.
- 30:04So it's, it depends on his priorities are very different.
- 30:09There is to what I think he can play extremely well and I think
- 30:14some episodes that are very underrated plot Rise, Like The
- 30:18Runaway Bride and Voyage of the Damned are ploy to the hill,
- 30:22they're very entertaining watches, but if you actually
- 30:24boiled them down to a narrative, their Potted.
- 30:27Very, very robustly. Rusty Davis.
- 30:30Is going for sentiment over plastic.
- 30:32Oh yeah, that's, that's my bag. So that's why you love it.
- 30:36You know. And that's and that's what makes
- 30:37me feel like no. Other part of those who does not
- 30:41one rosti Davis over, I don't feel a whole ton of emotions.
- 30:44I love that me exactly what the the pit, the the cost of that is
- 30:49for someone like me who was more, you know, invested in plot
- 30:53who, you know, wants to watch a good story that has a good
- 30:55beginning. Good.
- 30:57Good and go along with the plot, you know, we get a little bit
- 31:01short changed in that respect. So we have a don't get us wrong.
- 31:03I'm not, you know, sliding not something you do buzz off in the
- 31:06slightest, bit, what I'm seeing is that, that's what you like,
- 31:08it's funny. Why you, you outside, ankle
- 31:10Moore's, nothing because nothing is far, more profit is more,
- 31:13probably not do decent characterization, but I don't
- 31:17think I don't think he's as a depth making you feel and
- 31:20getting you close to people. But he man a man, he can
- 31:23assemble a plot like pretty much nobody else.
- 31:27Absolutely, in Eagan, you can turn it around, you can Loop it
- 31:29back on itself. You can, you know, you can do
- 31:32things. It's like the blowing I'm sorry,
- 31:38you know, it's so would you knock it back?
- 31:41The classic series, you have, you know, stories like this,
- 31:44which are seven episodes, long anything?
- 31:45Well, is seven episodes, you're too long for this story.
- 31:49That's going to be a lot of people out there who are
- 31:50thinking, oh yes, it's padded to the hilt and nothing is one.
- 31:54Modern-day viewer that wouldn't say this is Be double the
- 31:57length. It needs to be.
- 31:58Yeah, but we've just watched thought.
- 32:01Well, within episode 5, you know what five episodes in and out,
- 32:04and this has not let up once you know, coming in to episode 6, I
- 32:08think this is where it starts lagging.
- 32:10A little bit in episode 6. Go start to get a bit with
- 32:12repetition your things start happening again.
- 32:15And you kind of thinking of it because this is where we're
- 32:17getting bogged down a little bit.
- 32:18But I say this point notice is there's other areas Dixon
- 32:23Barrel. It's always say, you know, like
- 32:24where, you know, you can do the first four There's lots of
- 32:27insert and, you know, the plots chugging along and then you have
- 32:30to add a new element. I think that's why he's got into
- 32:32space now because they've gotta do something different.
- 32:36They can't just run around a lot of pipes and have the
- 32:38ambassador's attacking people for another three episodes.
- 32:41You know, I'll try but never mind.
- 32:43Hmm but again it's you know it's depends on how well you you put
- 32:48it out. So you know, 10 sticks of doing
- 32:51a brilliant job here of just bringing in new story elements
- 32:54and stretching out what they've got, you know.
- 32:57In a scene and, you know, you know, balloon in and out with
- 33:01with count up bits and you know, and what not, and it makes it
- 33:05much better or the stories don't do successfully other stories,
- 33:10bringing a bit of a dogleg. See how that looks sort of like,
- 33:12well, we'll have a little story than a bigger story, you know?
- 33:16If you look at something like seeds of Doom.
- 33:19Yeah, you have. That is probably the clearest
- 33:21example of, here's a little introduction of the story and
- 33:24then we'll have the full story. And going back to Dinosaur
- 33:28Invasion. That's another fantastic example
- 33:30of Matt Hulk plottin, where he has two or three plots threads
- 33:36which are running simultaneously so you have syrup in the space.
- 33:41Trip. You know, you have this
- 33:43introduction which is sort of like 20 days later of deserted
- 33:47London, you have the doctor worrying about the dinosaurs and
- 33:49then you have several up in the spaceship and David Whittaker
- 33:52does the same thing in enemy of the world, when salamander goes
- 33:54down into his secret base and then that opens up the whole
- 33:57story as well, you know? Yeah, so it can be done quite
- 34:00naturally but a lot of them need this sort of like dog wreck
- 34:03approach but it's what I will see is you know, if you're
- 34:09complaining about the length. Length of a story.
- 34:11What? You're going to cut out of this?
- 34:14Nothing, I don't know, they would lose the thing.
- 34:16In fact, I've watched you put, I probably would lock an episode
- 34:20of Inferno. And I think now, I think
- 34:24silurians has enough instant to cover it, seven episodes as
- 34:28well. I don't know if it's a whole
- 34:30episode where they're doing the test tubes and trying to stop
- 34:33the plague, but it's worth remembering as well.
- 34:36Tara sticks and he uses this word hated.
- 34:40Seven passes. Yeah and he said that it was
- 34:43torturous trying to stretch these stories to this like oh
- 34:48now I think he's talented enough and he's got whole care as well.
- 34:52The they do an intelligent job of it.
- 34:55Yeah him and him and hawk or a brilliant.
- 34:57If you look at the war games where they've done for 10
- 35:00episodes and I can totally understand why you hits doing it
- 35:03for 470, probably here to doing it for six as well.
- 35:05Although he did a lot of sex partners and I'd say, As far as
- 35:10to say like like they got away with their.
- 35:13Yeah. But this absolutely should not
- 35:15have been the norm. No, they've got away with it
- 35:17because the old that good at it. That's the thing, you know, if
- 35:20it wasn't, you know, for the had just left, left it a day over
- 35:23with like the right seven episodes or anyone else.
- 35:25I think this story would have fallen quite short, but because
- 35:29it is Terrance dicks and because it is my called can because of
- 35:34the off. So good at this, back to the
- 35:37wall, we need to fill seven episodes.
- 35:39Let's do it. Type of work.
- 35:42It's absolutely fantastic.
