How the Karen Read Effect Is Shaping the Lindsay Clancy Trial (Part 2) (9/3/26) · The Epstein Chronicles

Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome back to the program. In
• 0:03
Speaker 1: this episode we're going to pick up where we left
• 0:05
Speaker 1: off talking about the Karen Reid effect. And that's why
• 0:10
Speaker 1: I have so much contempt for people who helped normalize
• 0:12
Speaker 1: this shit. They didn't merely have opinions about Karen Reid.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: Millions of people have opinions about criminal cases and managed
• 0:20
Speaker 1: to avoid building personality cults around defendants or lynch mobs
• 0:24
Speaker 1: around witnesses. And the architects of the circus are demonstrated
• 0:28
Speaker 1: that aggressive public narrative warfare could create attention, influence discourse,
• 0:33
Speaker 1: build celebrity, generate money, and provide participants with the intoxicating
• 0:37
Speaker 1: sensation of belonging to something bigger than themselves. Other cases
• 0:42
Speaker 1: were always going to attract imitators once that formula proved successful.
• 0:47
Speaker 1: Human beings copy what receives rewards. If belligerence earns followers,
• 0:51
Speaker 1: belligerence multiplies. If humiliating witnesses earns applause, Humiliation becomes programming.
• 0:59
Speaker 1: If treating a murder prosecution like professional wrestling produces enormous engagement,
• 1:04
Speaker 1: eventually every courthouse gets its own fucking Wrestlemania. And now,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: we have to live with the consequences. Every major case
• 1:12
Speaker 1: attracts armies of people who seem to arrive carrying conclusions
• 1:16
Speaker 1: before they have finished learning the names involved. Somebody becomes
• 1:20
Speaker 1: the new Karen Reid. Somebody becomes the new corrupt cop.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: Somebody becomes becomes the new persecuted outsider, and somebody becomes
• 1:28
Speaker 1: the villain required to make the mythology function. The specifics
• 1:33
Speaker 1: barely matter because the template has already been written. People
• 1:37
Speaker 1: simply change the names and keep the script. Evidence gets
• 1:40
Speaker 1: filtered through archetypes rather than analyzed on its own terms.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: A defendant cannot simply be a defendant because they must
• 1:47
Speaker 1: become either an innocent martyr or an irredeemable monster. Police
• 1:52
Speaker 1: cannot simply make an error because they must either be
• 1:55
Speaker 1: flawless heroes or members of a gigantic criminal conspiracy. The
• 2:00
Speaker 1: adult possibility that complicated cases involve messy evidence, imperfect institutions,
• 2:05
Speaker 1: flawed witnesses, legitimate uncertainty, and no cinematic explanation is treated
• 2:11
Speaker 1: like an insult. And this is where my experience covering
• 2:14
Speaker 1: Epstein has made me particularly intolerant of the bullshit. I've
• 2:19
Speaker 1: seen what general institutional protection can look like, without needing
• 2:22
Speaker 1: to invent a secret handshake behind every closed door. I've
• 2:26
Speaker 1: read enough litigation, testimony, investigative material, government findings, depositions, and
• 2:32
Speaker 1: correspondence to know the reality can be more disturbing than
• 2:36
Speaker 1: conspiracy fiction precisely because the documented failures are real. Epstein
• 2:41
Speaker 1: didn't require people to manufacture institutional deference out of thin
• 2:45
Speaker 1: air because extraordinary deference was embedded throughout parts of the
• 2:49
Speaker 1: historical record. That should teach people to respect documentation, not
• 2:53
Speaker 1: abandon it. It should teach us that powerful institutions deserve
• 2:58
Speaker 1: relentless scrutiny while simultaneously reminding us that proximity alone is
• 3:02
Speaker 1: not guilt and suspicion is not proof. It should make
• 3:05
Speaker 1: our investigative muscles stronger rather than turning our brains into
• 3:09
Speaker 1: fucking pudding. Instead, a generation of true crime fandom seems
• 3:13
Speaker 1: to have learned the opposite lesson. And they learn that
• 3:16
Speaker 1: because institutions sometimes lie whatever they personally believe must therefore
• 3:20
Speaker 1: be true. That logical collapse is catastrophic. Governments lie. Police
• 3:26
Speaker 1: officers make mistakes. Prosecutors exercise terrible judgment. Witnesses misremember things.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Experts disagree. Defense attorneys construct narratives. Journalists get stories wrong,
• 3:39
Speaker 1: and crowds can be spectacularly fucking stupid. All of those
• 3:43
Speaker 1: statements can be true simultaneously. There's no rule requiring one
• 3:48
Speaker 1: institution to possess a monopoly on error. Yet team sports
• 3:52
Speaker 1: justice demands binary thinking. Because binary thinking makes cheering easier.
• 3:58
Speaker 1: Either you trust law enforcement completely, or you believe every
• 4:01
Speaker 1: allegation of corruption. Either you support a defendant absolutely, or
• 4:05
Speaker 1: you have joined the prosecution. Either a witness is flawless,
• 4:09
Speaker 1: or everything the witness has ever said becomes worthless. Serious
• 4:14
Speaker 1: analysis lives in the uncomfortable territory between those poles. Which
• 4:19
Speaker 1: is exactly why serious analysis performs so poorly in an
• 4:23
Speaker 1: ecosystem addicted to rage. And look, the victims suffer most
• 4:27
Speaker 1: when this garbage takes over. Their deaths become branding opportunities
• 4:31
Speaker 1: for people who never knew them. Their photographs become visual assets.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: Their last moments become recurring content. And their families sometimes
• 4:39
Speaker 1: find themselves competing with internet celebrities and for ownership of
• 4:43
Speaker 1: the narrative surrounding their own fucking tragedy. Think about how
• 4:48
Speaker 1: disgusting that is for longer than five seconds. Somebody dies
• 4:52
Speaker 1: and a complete stranger begins building personal identities around theories
• 4:56
Speaker 1: about how it happened. Alliances form, enemies are selected, merchandise appears,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: live streams stretch for hours, and followers reward increasingly theatrical
• 5:07
Speaker 1: performances of outrage. Somewhere beneath all that noise is a
• 5:12
Speaker 1: dead person whose existence has been flattened into a plot device.
• 5:16
Speaker 1: Any movement claiming to care about justice while losing sight
• 5:19
Speaker 1: of that humanity has already failed whatever moral test it
• 5:23
Speaker 1: claims to be administering. And that principle is guided how
• 5:26
Speaker 1: I think about Epstein survivors as well. Their suffering cannot
• 5:30
Speaker 1: simply become ammunition used to attack whichever politician, banker, celebrity, royal, prosecutor,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: or institution somebody already hated beforehand. Their experiences matter independently
• 5:42
Speaker 1: of our ideological appetites. Their allegations deserve to be examined
• 5:48
Speaker 1: carefully because seriousness requires both listening to survivors and respecting
• 5:53
Speaker 1: what evidence can actually establish. Turning survivors into props is
• 5:57
Speaker 1: exploitation even when the person doing it insists they're advocating
• 6:01
Speaker 1: on the survivor's behalf. Now, the same principle belongs in
• 6:04
Speaker 1: every criminal case. John O'Keefe was not a prop in
• 6:08
Speaker 1: somebody's crusade against police corruption. Any more than a defendant
• 6:13
Speaker 1: should be reduced to a mascot for people who desperately
• 6:16
Speaker 1: want to believe the entire system is rigged. Human beings
• 6:19
Speaker 1: deserve more than being drafted onto teams after tragedy destroys
• 6:23
Speaker 1: their lives. And apparently that statement has become radical to
• 6:27
Speaker 1: in the carnival atmosphere we now call true crime discourse.
• 6:31
Speaker 1: And what makes the whole entire thing more disgusting is
• 6:33
Speaker 1: the smugness. People who swallowed extraordinary claims with astonishingly little
• 6:38
Speaker 1: skepticism strutted around as if they had personally broken Watergate.
• 6:42
Speaker 1: Social media detectives with no access to complete investigative records
• 6:47
Speaker 1: appointed themselves superior to every attorney, investigator, scientist, judge, and
• 6:52
Speaker 1: journalist who dared complicate their conclusions. They learned a few
• 6:56
Speaker 1: pieces of legal terminology and suddenly spoke with the confidence
• 7:00
Speaker 1: of Supreme Court justices. They watched clip testimony and denounced...
• 7:05
Speaker 1: what witnesses were thinking. They studied body language as if
• 7:08
Speaker 1: shoulder movements were admissible forensic evidence. They mapped friendships and
• 7:13
Speaker 1: acquaintances until knowing somebody became indistinguishable from conspiring with them.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: Then they accused everybody else of being cheap. Nothing quite
• 7:23
Speaker 1: captures the stupidity of modern conspiracy culture like thousands of
• 7:26
Speaker 1: people repeating identical internet talking points while proudly announcing that
• 7:31
Speaker 1: they think for themselves. So look, I'm done granting the behavior,
• 7:35
Speaker 1: the polite description, of passionate advocacy. Passion does not excuse
• 7:40
Speaker 1: intellectual dishonesty. Anger does not magically convert speculation into evidence.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: A large crowd does not transform an unsupported claim into
• 7:49
Speaker 1: a supported one. 10,000 people chanting the same thing are
• 7:53
Speaker 1: capable of being just as wrong as one person whispering it.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: Popularity has never been a burden of proof. Social media
• 8:01
Speaker 1: engagement isn't corroboration. A trending hashtag cannot survive cross-examination. And
• 8:09
Speaker 1: a courthouse surrounded by people demanding a particular outcome should
• 8:13
Speaker 1: make anybody who genuinely values an independent justice system profoundly uncomfortable,
• 8:19
Speaker 1: regardless of whether that crowd happens to support the outcome
• 8:24
Speaker 1: you personally prefer. And look, the reason that I'm angry
• 8:27
Speaker 1: about this beyond Karen Reid herself, because this was never
• 8:31
Speaker 1: going to stay contained, inside one courthouse or one Massachusetts town.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: The precedent was cultural rather than legal, and cultural precedent
• 8:40
Speaker 1: traveled faster than appellate decisions. The message was unmistakable. Build
• 8:46
Speaker 1: the movement early, control the emotional narrative, identify enemies, punish dissent,
• 8:51
Speaker 1: drown uncertainty and repetition, and force everybody covering the case
• 8:55
Speaker 1: to respond to your framing. Do that effectively enough, and
• 8:59
Speaker 1: the movement itself becomes part of the story. Journalists start
• 9:03
Speaker 1: reporting on the crowd. Lawyers start discussing the publicity. Judges
• 9:07
Speaker 1: confront questions about juror exposure. And witnesses understand that their
• 9:11
Speaker 1: testimony may unleash thousands of strangers upon their lives. Even
• 9:16
Speaker 1: when nobody can prove that a specific juror changed the
• 9:19
Speaker 1: vote because of public pressure, the environment surrounding the trial
• 9:23
Speaker 1: has already been contaminated by the spectacle. Justice should not
• 9:27
Speaker 1: have to compete with a fucking marketing campaign. Yet that's
• 9:30
Speaker 1: increasingly where we are Because too many people celebrated the
• 9:34
Speaker 1: prototype instead of recognizing the danger. And look, the solution
• 9:38
Speaker 1: is not blind faith in prosecutors, police departments, judges, or
• 9:42
Speaker 1: government institutions. Because anyone familiar with my Epstein work knows
• 9:47
Speaker 1: I would never preach something that absurd. Scrutinize every fucking
• 9:51
Speaker 1: one of them. Demand documents. Compare statements. Inspect timelines. Question
• 9:56
Speaker 1: forensic claims. Expose conflicts. Challenge convenience. explanations and make powerful
• 10:02
Speaker 1: people answer uncomfortable questions but apply that same brutality to
• 10:07
Speaker 1: your own theory ask what would prove you wrong identify
• 10:11
Speaker 1: where you're speculating separate a suspicious circumstance from evidence of
• 10:15
Speaker 1: a crime stop treating uncertainty as humiliation and corrections as
• 10:19
Speaker 1: betrayal If your argument cannot survive those requirements, it's not
• 10:24
Speaker 1: an investigation worth defending, no matter how many people are
• 10:27
Speaker 1: standing outside the courthouse chanting along with you. Because eventually
• 10:31
Speaker 1: this culture will attach itself to a case where the
• 10:34
Speaker 1: consequences become impossible to ignore. Maybe an innocent person will
• 10:39
Speaker 1: be destroyed because a sufficiently charismatic online mob decides guilt
• 10:43
Speaker 1: before trial. Maybe a guilty person will become a folk
• 10:47
Speaker 1: hero Because influencers discover an alternative narrative capable of generating
• 10:52
Speaker 1: millions of views. Maybe witnesses will refuse to cooperate because
• 10:56
Speaker 1: they watch what internet mobs do to anybody who gives
• 11:00
Speaker 1: inconvenient testimony. Maybe jurors will walk into court carrying impressions
• 11:05
Speaker 1: formed by months of supposedly unavoidable content despite every effort
• 11:10
Speaker 1: at screening. Maybe grieving families will discover that strangers have
• 11:14
Speaker 1: commandeered their loss and transformed it into a franchise. None
• 11:18
Speaker 1: of those possibilities should be remotely acceptable to people who
• 11:22
Speaker 1: claim to care about justice. Yet every fucking incentive in
• 11:26
Speaker 1: the current ecosystem pushes us closer to them. So yes,
• 11:30
Speaker 1: I have contempt for the people who built and fed
• 11:32
Speaker 1: the Karen Reid circus. And I'm no longer interested in
• 11:35
Speaker 1: sanding down that contempt to make the criticism easier to swallow.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: I have contempt for the harassment masquerading as investigation. The
• 11:44
Speaker 1: certainty masquerading as intelligence. The fandom. masquerading as advocacy, and
• 11:50
Speaker 1: the performance masquerading as journalism. I have contempt for people
• 11:55
Speaker 1: who demand impossible standards of proof from everyone except themselves.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: I have contempt for people who turn tragedy into recreation
• 12:03
Speaker 1: and then congratulated themselves for caring more than anybody else.
• 12:08
Speaker 1: After years spent looking into Epstein, I know exactly why
• 12:11
Speaker 1: powerful institutions should never receive automatic trust. But I also
• 12:16
Speaker 1: know why evidence is must remain the fucking currency of
• 12:20
Speaker 1: any serious accusation. The Karen Reid phenomenon did not teach
• 12:23
Speaker 1: America to question authority because Americans have been questioning authority
• 12:27
Speaker 1: since the country began. What it helped perfect was something
• 12:31
Speaker 1: far uglier. The weaponization of public certainty before factual certainty
• 12:36
Speaker 1: has been earned. It showed people how easily a courtroom
• 12:40
Speaker 1: could be surrounded by a parallel universe where popularity functions
• 12:43
Speaker 1: as proof and belonging matters more than truth. If that
• 12:48
Speaker 1: blueprint continues spreading from case to case, we're not democratizing justice.
• 12:53
Speaker 1: We're reducing it to another spectator sport governed by algorithms, personalities, money,
• 12:58
Speaker 1: and whichever mob can scream the loudest. And when the
• 13:02
Speaker 1: day comes that this machinery chews up somebody you believe
• 13:05
Speaker 1: is innocent, destroys somebody you know is truthful, or turns
• 13:10
Speaker 1: the death of somebody you love into somebody else's fucking
• 13:12
Speaker 1: content franchise, remember exactly where the cheering started. All the
• 13:18
Speaker 1: information that goes with this episode can be found in
• 13:22
