- 0:00Speaker 1: Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, Jake Heritta, John Lackey. Welcome back
- 0:11Speaker 1: to another episode of the Level Reunion podcast, where we're
- 0:14Speaker 1: celebrating our ten year anniversary of the iconic twenty sixteen
- 0:17Speaker 1: World Series Championship. We're with two staples of our team,
- 0:22Speaker 1: John Lackey and Jake Arita. Welcome to the program.
- 0:25Speaker 2: The Horses.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Good to be here with you, guys.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Lack, this is bro. You're for celebrated ten years. You
- 0:30Speaker 1: just celebrate a twenty year a few years Bron Yeah, Yeah,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the originator of the ABC collection of Rings.
- 0:38Speaker 4: I look a lot better than that team Bill because
- 0:40Speaker 4: I'm the young guy and that team deal this one.
- 0:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna be the you know, the gray hair, old
- 0:43Speaker 4: guy in the back.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, that's what I say about you. You all, you got
- 0:46Speaker 2: the you started the alphabet of Rings Anaheim, Boston and Chicago.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The ABC's like, it's freaking impressive when you look back.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We were on the same flight our rookie year. You
- 0:56Speaker 2: had won the World Series. Pitch in game seven and uh,
- 0:59Speaker 2: I was coming from the daughters who went to a
- 1:00Speaker 2: union meeting up and.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Lock was playing with dudes that were born playing before
- 1:06Speaker 1: I was born. He was playing with guys.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Playing in the eighties.
- 1:09Speaker 5: That's sure.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Yeah, we had a couple of dudes. Yeah, I had
- 1:11Speaker 4: some great group of beats. Man took care of me.
- 1:13Speaker 5: It was cool.
- 1:14Speaker 1: You're young to me, You're forever young for me. Thank you,
- 1:17Speaker 1: my guy.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That's actually something that I think, like some of the
- 1:20Speaker 2: themes for these things are like how people influence you, right,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and like you came up in an old school group.
- 1:27Speaker 2: You know, first of all, you had all these guys
- 1:31Speaker 2: in Anaheim. Like what have you taken from your time
- 1:36Speaker 2: winning three championships and three different real teams as the
- 1:39Speaker 2: games evolved? Like what did you learn early age from
- 1:42Speaker 2: from your veteran play teammates?
- 1:43Speaker 4: The locker room matters, man Like, chemistry in the locker
- 1:46Speaker 4: room is a big deal. Like, you got to have
- 1:48Speaker 4: the right kind of veterans in there. You got to
- 1:51Speaker 4: have a good mix, man Like, you got to have
- 1:53Speaker 4: the young, young, hungry guys, and you got to have
- 1:55Speaker 4: the old guys have kind of been.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Around and and know what to do and know.
- 1:58Speaker 4: How to kind of harness the young guys a little bit.
- 2:01Speaker 4: And I think and all three teams that I've been on,
- 2:04Speaker 4: I mean, you were on.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Two of them with me. We had we had that mix.
- 2:08Speaker 5: It was fun.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Thanks for the rings. Thanks.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you never lost fun. You never lost in the
- 2:12Speaker 1: final dance.
- 2:13Speaker 5: I mean, I told you on the plane when we when.
- 2:15Speaker 1: We were going to I have a second place ring sucks.
- 2:18Speaker 5: If you're going to get in there, you might as well.
- 2:20Speaker 5: That's what I was saying.
- 2:22Speaker 6: You know, what's most impressive, too, is the longevity, like
- 2:26Speaker 6: how long he played for and that's kind of something
- 2:28Speaker 6: that's probably not going to happen as much in this
- 2:30Speaker 6: game anymore. Sixteen years, right, yeah, I mean and as
- 2:35Speaker 6: a pitcher too or position player.
- 2:36Speaker 3: That's that's incredibly It will be harder.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I mean, guys are let's be honest, you guys are
- 2:40Speaker 4: getting bigger, faster, and stronger.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Man. These dudes are a million miles an hour.
- 2:44Speaker 1: The demand, I feel like the demand now is more
- 2:46Speaker 1: than ever as a bisball player and in general, just
- 2:49Speaker 1: to stress all the extra media, social media, all that
- 2:53Speaker 1: added pressures, I think is well, you guys.
- 2:57Speaker 5: I didn't have to worry about camera phones when I
- 2:59Speaker 5: first came up.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Now you're dating yourself.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, you guys, like seven innings was like what you like?
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'm just going out there, I'm trying to throw a
- 3:07Speaker 2: no hitter, but like seven innings is like, okay, I
- 3:10Speaker 2: feel like I did my job.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Now it's like five hundred pitches. Let's just get to
- 3:15Speaker 1: on that ninety.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I don't want a.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Success unless I want to least seven.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Well, don't you think that some of that is because
- 3:21Speaker 6: of how how good the guys in.
- 3:23Speaker 3: The bullpen are, not that they weren't before the game
- 3:26Speaker 3: is get you got seven guys down there. They can
- 3:28Speaker 3: throw mid up or nineties deeper probably.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and they've got two secondaries. Now remember there's like
- 3:34Speaker 2: one guy maybe sinker slider down there, the velocity. But
- 3:37Speaker 2: to your point, it's like, no, there's like legit stuff
- 3:40Speaker 2: down there one hundred a lot of times and two secondaries.
- 3:44Speaker 6: And obviously we wanted to go out there and keep
- 3:47Speaker 6: the ball in her hand till the game was over
- 3:48Speaker 6: every time. And I think the guys now they also
- 3:51Speaker 6: want to do that. But do you think some of
- 3:53Speaker 6: it is I want.
- 3:55Speaker 3: To keep this guy healthy and preserve some of his
- 3:59Speaker 3: stuff for later in season.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think the Dodgers blueprint right now is whatever one
- 4:03Speaker 1: should be striving or just be healthy in October, right
- 4:06Speaker 1: with the with the extra two wild card teams, it's
- 4:09Speaker 1: not as hard to get into the playoffs and wildcar
- 4:12Speaker 1: around or by you just roll.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Give guys like vacations.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's great.
- 4:16Speaker 5: They're just so they're ready at the end.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Keeping fresh.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jake, you we were talking about longevity with you, Lac,
- 4:22Speaker 1: which is you've been just so consistent throughout your entire career.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You kind of had a different path with getting drafted
- 4:29Speaker 1: to Baltimore. I remember you getting traded at thirteen, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: it was like, this guy is a dude, but he
- 4:37Speaker 1: just hasn't really figured it out yet at this level,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and arguably the best trade in Cup's history. You and
- 4:43Speaker 1: Trophy for the.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Value of that. You too, it's not about me, You're.
- 4:50Speaker 2: It comes out everything because they get it can get
- 4:53Speaker 2: on rig.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But bro, you came over. You and Strophie. You make
- 4:59Speaker 1: two stars in Iowa and then you get back to
- 5:03Speaker 1: the big leagues and then I remember John Baker always saying, dude,
- 5:06Speaker 1: Aria is nasty. This dude's don't win a scion. You
- 5:09Speaker 1: don't understand how good he is once he figures it out.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And you've obviously figured it out.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, and we've all seen guys that have incredible stuff,
- 5:18Speaker 6: and some of them just can't quite harness it and
- 5:21Speaker 6: figure it out. I was in a position where I
- 5:24Speaker 6: was trying to be somebody that I wasn't, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 6: and I was I was working really hard on making
- 5:29Speaker 6: some adjustments, and I just didn't feel like myself. And
- 5:32Speaker 6: so the first thing that I said to THEO and
- 5:34Speaker 6: to Boz when I got traded is I'm gonna come
- 5:37Speaker 6: over here and be myself and just let it all
- 5:39Speaker 6: hang out, like I know how to be an elite starter.
- 5:43Speaker 6: And I think I tweeted something like when I got traded,
- 5:46Speaker 6: or I might have got sent down from Baltimore and
- 5:50Speaker 6: I'm getting a lot of shit from from fans.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And as a young guy, you pay attention to that stuff.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, for sure.
- 5:55Speaker 6: It's hard not to sure. So I kind of tweeted
- 5:58Speaker 6: back at somebody and said, one day being a lead
- 6:00Speaker 6: starter in the big leagues, you know, I just had
- 6:02Speaker 6: that self believe it.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Man.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Well, I just I just knew what I was capable of,
- 6:07Speaker 6: you know, And it was just a matter of time
- 6:09Speaker 6: before I, you know, was able to have some success
- 6:12Speaker 6: and just build off of that, you know, and going
- 6:14Speaker 6: to Chicago and having a support system and guys that
- 6:17Speaker 6: were in my corner was was what really made the
- 6:19Speaker 6: difference for me.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I remember facing this is like before I got Chicago.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But in fourteen, you almost threw a no hitter in Boston.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I played that game. You threw me a front hit
- 6:29Speaker 2: Cutter it like ninety three, and I'm like, what was
- 6:32Speaker 2: that sit down? And I knew when Lester was getting
- 6:36Speaker 2: courted over here and just talking like, okay, well they've
- 6:40Speaker 2: got two horses because I just faced this guy and
- 6:43Speaker 2: Johnny I knew what he was capable of, and you
- 6:45Speaker 2: were still in Saint Louis, but you're talking about like, okay,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you've got two number ones at the top of a
- 6:51Speaker 2: pitching staff, Like that's that's gold for a catchup.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Well, and it was.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know, obviously, Lester had done his thing for a
- 6:59Speaker 3: number of years.
- 7:00Speaker 6: He was already that guy, and it was my job
- 7:02Speaker 6: to kind of get to that level, you know, so
- 7:05Speaker 6: we could continue to move forward and you know, stop
- 7:09Speaker 6: getting beat by Saint Louis.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It's like it's like we're talking about this with KB,
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like me, KB, I love him, but like I want
- 7:16Speaker 1: to be better than him. And it's like that inner
- 7:18Speaker 1: competition of brotherhood. That like, bro, when you guys were
- 7:21Speaker 1: rolling in sixteen, like every one of you was better
- 7:24Speaker 1: than the next. Yeah, when everyone was rolling and it
- 7:26Speaker 1: was like you you did your job, and then you
- 7:30Speaker 1: were like, fuck, I want to do better than that,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and then less you're like I want to do better
- 7:33Speaker 1: than yet. Carl and Hammill, it's like, well, it's all love.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The thing. That the thing when I look back on,
- 7:38Speaker 2: like you guys post, our staff posted like you guys
- 7:43Speaker 2: posted every fifth day. Like we didn't have any banged up,
- 7:45Speaker 2: real injuries to that staff. Like everybody stayed pretty healthy.
- 7:49Speaker 6: That year, if I remember, right, like if you yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 6: if you look at it, we'd have to check the
- 7:52Speaker 6: amount of starts. But I don't know if I don't
- 7:55Speaker 6: think you missed a start. I didn't miss a start. Hendrix.
- 7:58Speaker 2: The only start we can blame on his THEO when
- 8:00Speaker 2: he brought in the.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Madison. I feel he might have ended my career on
- 8:06Speaker 5: that one.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I had.
- 8:07Speaker 5: I had to warm up twice in the freaking bullpen.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yeah during that yeah remember that because he I remember
- 8:12Speaker 2: we actually were talking to Madden about that unless time
- 8:15Speaker 2: everybody was mad.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, outside of a cup maybe a couple spots starts.
- 8:21Speaker 3: We were out there, Yeah, every fifth day, all five
- 8:23Speaker 3: of us.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember that he did bring them up.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I want your perspective in fifteen because I tell the story.
- 8:31Speaker 1: The Cardinals were the cream of the crop. They're the
- 8:33Speaker 1: gold standard of a baseball division. Blah blah blah, fuck
- 8:36Speaker 1: the Cardinals. And they would come over when we stunk.
- 8:41Speaker 1: You probably remember this with old Wrigley. They come over
- 8:43Speaker 1: to the weight room and all their guys, Hey, ras,
- 8:45Speaker 1: what's up man? They talked to us like buddy, buddy.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And then the first half of fifteen, you guys were
- 8:51Speaker 1: beating us, but we were like, we're pesky to you,
- 8:53Speaker 1: but we didn't how to win yet. And in the
- 8:56Speaker 1: back half we started winning. You guys still won the division. Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: we were ninety seven pirates or ninety eight? What what
- 9:04Speaker 1: was that like on this of because I feel like
- 9:08Speaker 1: on our side, we knew we were winning, like we
- 9:10Speaker 1: knew we I felt like we had your guys number,
- 9:14Speaker 1: not necessarily you, But what was that on the other
- 9:16Speaker 1: side or did you not even pay attention? Oh?
- 9:20Speaker 4: I mean, you know you kind of lock into your
- 9:21Speaker 4: don't think you know, trying to do a thing. But
- 9:23Speaker 4: one hundred percent saw saw you guys on an upward trajectory,
- 9:27Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like you were getting better
- 9:30Speaker 4: and you know, obviously you know this this guy turned
- 9:33Speaker 4: into an elite dude, you know, and I knew, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 4: the big left handed that's that's my guy, I know.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I mean, I know, I've known him for a long
- 9:41Speaker 4: time and I knew what he was going to do.
- 9:43Speaker 4: He's a and this guy. You had a couple of presidents,
- 9:46Speaker 4: You had a couple of men in the room, guys
- 9:48Speaker 4: that came over and turned turned some of you young
- 9:51Speaker 4: kids and into pros.
- 9:53Speaker 5: And you guys started winning.
- 9:54Speaker 4: And that was one of the reasons I wanted to
- 9:56Speaker 4: come joined when I when I had the opportunity.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, because well, I mean fifth team. We'll go back
- 10:01Speaker 1: to basically really starting fourteen for me Boston was that
- 10:06Speaker 1: that was like I remember one snake's turning into his nest. Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and we were young, we stunk in thirteen, Like, but
- 10:14Speaker 1: we're building and you're part of that. You are especially
- 10:17Speaker 1: part of a way that's yeah, big more just started
- 10:19Speaker 1: a group like and then in fifteen we build and
- 10:23Speaker 1: you're doing your thing, especially that second half. I think
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's the best second half of baseball history.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Right literally, bro, we roll for now, We roll.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I was a part of in Atlanta. Chris Medlin had
- 10:35Speaker 2: had a run like that. Oh yeah, and I remember.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I think I was like this dude, like it was
- 10:40Speaker 2: one day. I mean for all our staff, but it
- 10:42Speaker 2: was like you guys at the top were like, oh yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 2: we're winning to day.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah he went on a pretty nice run.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I want to I want to ask a
- 10:49Speaker 2: quick just to follow up with the relationship with Lester,
- 10:52Speaker 2: like you got to give the bat that bat he
- 10:54Speaker 2: gets his first hit, right, first hit off? You pitching
- 10:58Speaker 2: mad as hell?
- 10:58Speaker 5: You're so bad man?
- 11:00Speaker 2: What was the bad?
- 11:01Speaker 4: But we had we had, you know, drinks, We're gonna
- 11:04Speaker 4: hang out. I was going to his house after the game,
- 11:06Speaker 4: no matter what, you know what I mean. So yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 4: and we had Uh I forgot the exact bed, but yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 4: we we had some action on it. But I went
- 11:15Speaker 4: over to his house and drank a nice bottle of
- 11:16Speaker 4: whiskey of this house and got it back.
- 11:18Speaker 5: So it was good.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Good first knock off? You think that made it?
- 11:23Speaker 5: Then I looked.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I looked over there and he was trying so hard
- 11:25Speaker 4: not to look at me good because I was I
- 11:27Speaker 4: was just gonna yell at him, and he was like
- 11:29Speaker 4: looking down like this. He was like, He's like, I'm
- 11:30Speaker 4: not looking at him and not because he was trying
- 11:32Speaker 4: not to laugh.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it was pretty hilarious.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We when we get in the playoffs fifteen, I want
- 11:38Speaker 1: to read this verbatim. Whatever helps keep your hopes alive,
- 11:42Speaker 1: just know it doesn't matter.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Isn't that great?
- 11:45Speaker 1: The best We're playing Pittsburgh and Snake sweets just the
- 11:49Speaker 1: day before the game, the wild card game saying basically,
- 11:51Speaker 1: all the Pirates fans, fuck you, It's over.
- 11:56Speaker 6: I was just in that in that place, you damn right,
- 12:00Speaker 6: everything was locked in dialed, you know, the the week
- 12:04Speaker 6: leading up to my start, like everything was perfect, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 6: and I was just trying to see because you know,
- 12:11Speaker 6: at some point like that's it's not gonna last forever,
- 12:14Speaker 6: right of course, but in that moment that that stretched.
- 12:18Speaker 3: But what what made you stress that?
- 12:20Speaker 6: Just ultimate confidence, you know, and did have ultimate ultimate
- 12:23Speaker 6: confidence well, and it helped help about to say that
- 12:30Speaker 6: my teammate. And it wasn't coming it was coming from
- 12:34Speaker 6: a place of of ultimate preparation too.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:37Speaker 6: I would not have done that if I didn't believe it,
- 12:41Speaker 6: you know. And so the fun the funny thing is
- 12:44Speaker 6: we're on the flight out there kind of walking up
- 12:47Speaker 6: and down the plane aisle with a glass wine and
- 12:49Speaker 6: just telling everybody, Hey, get me one.
- 12:51Speaker 2: That's what yesterday.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Give me one and the game's over. You know. That's
- 12:56Speaker 3: that's how I felt. And when s Forberd hit that
- 12:59Speaker 3: Homer was.
- 13:00Speaker 5: That was it?
- 13:01Speaker 1: That was the game.
- 13:01Speaker 2: That was it?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Bro, What about when Tony Watson hit you?
- 13:05Speaker 6: I think, you know, I haven't heard this from any
- 13:09Speaker 6: guys on their side. I think they were trying to
- 13:11Speaker 6: get me out of the game.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Of course.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I think they're trying to Bro, They're trying to cause
- 13:15Speaker 3: some sort of situation. And I knew it too.
- 13:18Speaker 6: I was fired up, yeah, but you were calling about it.
- 13:21Speaker 6: I was pretty relatively calm, and he hit me in
- 13:23Speaker 6: the belt.
- 13:23Speaker 1: So it was like probably the best spot to get
- 13:25Speaker 1: very professional, very professional.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I think that like looking back, and obviously I'm not
- 13:29Speaker 2: we're not Cubs historians here, but like as far as
- 13:32Speaker 2: like turning a franchise around and what the expectations were
- 13:35Speaker 2: and how big that moment was, like that's the biggest
- 13:37Speaker 2: game in Cubs history to Mene.
- 13:41Speaker 4: But with his confidence gave you guys confidence. You guys
- 13:44Speaker 4: kind of needed that to push because y'all were on
- 13:46Speaker 4: the edge of like are we there yet? Right in
- 13:50Speaker 4: that confidence might have pushed you guys over the edge.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, well we I mean we get uh, Joe Madden, Lester, Treyford, Dexter,
- 13:59Speaker 1: you're blossoming. We had kb all the young guys under
- 14:02Speaker 1: twenty five, twenty six years old or you know, we're
- 14:04Speaker 1: all going and our division was a gauntlet that year,
- 14:08Speaker 1: So you set the tone there and then we roll
- 14:11Speaker 1: into Saint Louis and we're like, we're gonna fuck these
- 14:13Speaker 1: guys up. And then we were under this guy who
- 14:15Speaker 1: goes what seven and a third I think maybe one
- 14:18Speaker 1: run on us and one they shove it up our ass.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Me and les I think, right, yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 1: And I remember that like after that game, we had
- 14:28Speaker 1: an off day and we all went to dinner at
- 14:30Speaker 1: Ruth Chris and Saint Louis and we were like, I
- 14:32Speaker 1: was like nervous. I'd never been in the playoffs, had
- 14:34Speaker 1: one game. I'm like, damn, like what do we do?
- 14:37Speaker 1: And like, you guys were so common, like we're type
- 14:39Speaker 1: were the next we win the next three and it's
- 14:45Speaker 1: like we just beat the Pirates who were really good
- 14:49Speaker 1: at the time, and then the gold Standard and was like,
- 14:51Speaker 1: we're winning the World Series this year.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I was heartbroken when we got swept in fifteen, but
- 14:57Speaker 1: that belief in that game was like, Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 2: That's our dude, right, like the dude that carries you easy.
- 15:03Speaker 2: We're having especially the second half, like you have that
- 15:05Speaker 2: confidence and then when the horse, when you have the
- 15:07Speaker 2: horse on the everybody's just more confident. That's why he's
- 15:11Speaker 2: starting pitching so important because you guys just set the tone.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And uh, speaking of setting tones, uh just go back
- 15:17Speaker 2: like your standard. Have you ever thrown a first pitch
- 15:20Speaker 2: of the game breaking ball or anything but a heater?
- 15:24Speaker 2: I remember talking. I remember boz or Joe coming to
- 15:27Speaker 2: you talking about, hey, Arizona, they jumped you for a
- 15:30Speaker 2: first pitch homer and uh, and they're trying to talk
- 15:33Speaker 2: to you say, hey man, you throw that fastball. They
- 15:35Speaker 2: know it's coming. You're like, I'll give me ship.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's like how but that's who you know
- 15:39Speaker 1: you're playing behind, Like you're playing behind your guy.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Here we come. Yeah, I'm not I'm not going to
- 15:44Speaker 2: show you that I'm scared of you first pitch, and
- 15:46Speaker 2: that's the mentality. The way you pitch, bro is like
- 15:49Speaker 2: it sets a tone.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Well I know for a fact, like I give up
- 15:53Speaker 4: two first pitch homers in my career.
- 15:55Speaker 3: That's it.
- 15:56Speaker 5: And ship I know because I did keep to the end.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I can't tell you how many times they got out
- 16:02Speaker 4: on the first pitch, right, yea, so I probably, I
- 16:04Speaker 4: guarantee mathematically I won that.
- 16:07Speaker 3: One.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Yeah, the leadoff guy, Kansas City. It was at home
- 16:12Speaker 6: in uh, it was in Wrigley, the little little Latin
- 16:16Speaker 6: guy leadoff.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Was it a first patch? Yeah, but still like I'm
- 16:22Speaker 3: not I'm not throwing a break the ball first patch.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Wow, I'm gonna throw you a heavy sinker and if
- 16:26Speaker 6: you want to take a chance of getting out.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Go for it.
- 16:28Speaker 6: But hey, before we get too far away from the
- 16:30Speaker 6: Pirates game, my favorite part of the game, other than
- 16:33Speaker 6: being carried by you on your shoulder at the end
- 16:35Speaker 6: of the game.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Can't punch in the ribs.
- 16:37Speaker 5: I got hit by.
- 16:37Speaker 6: Watson, I get the first base, Hyder leans over to me,
- 16:40Speaker 6: goes steal second.
- 16:42Speaker 3: No, what all right?
- 16:43Speaker 5: I love that?
- 16:44Speaker 6: Still a second base, I forgot, I I got. Having
- 16:48Speaker 6: a stolen base in the playoffs is probably.
- 16:50Speaker 5: One of my favorite things.
- 16:51Speaker 1: You have a CG shut out, a stole by pitch
- 16:55Speaker 1: CG when they were people gogs and a homer.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Well, and there was a but it wasn't even in doubt.
- 17:01Speaker 5: He was. He was sure.
- 17:03Speaker 3: We had one situation. I think there's bases load in
- 17:05Speaker 3: the fifth and then next play double play.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was huge, he said. He told the story
- 17:13Speaker 2: of like that's as nervous as loud as he's ever been.
- 17:15Speaker 2: After they booted that ball, bases loaded, one out and
- 17:18Speaker 2: you got that double play.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Well, what's the first time. That was a lot of
- 17:21Speaker 1: them when Raja hit the home run for me because
- 17:22Speaker 1: my first time ever in that first they're blacked out
- 17:25Speaker 1: there all the fans, they're screaming at us, like miserable
- 17:30Speaker 1: Pittsburgh people just screaming and went playing there went silent.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Did you see they had posters of Brittany no posters
- 17:38Speaker 6: of hers, and also from the tweet, they had the
- 17:41Speaker 6: big signs that said we do matter.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're you haunt.
- 17:47Speaker 6: That well and in those situations, you know you you
- 17:50Speaker 6: guys can probably you know speak to this too.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 17:54Speaker 6: The noise the fans didn't matter. At a certain point.
- 17:58Speaker 6: It was me and the guy at the play.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And the guy I'm throwing too. That's it. The noise
- 18:03Speaker 3: kind of the noise helped me or.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Someone like that.
- 18:06Speaker 3: You helped.
- 18:07Speaker 6: You didn't hear, Ship, Bro, you had and you can
- 18:10Speaker 6: feel the vibration from the crowd, but it's not.
- 18:15Speaker 3: It's not a negative, but it was never a negative thing.
- 18:18Speaker 1: You were always so locked into, like with what you
- 18:20Speaker 1: were doing that it was like even talking to you.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I feel like I always talked to the pictures for
- 18:25Speaker 1: the most part, not so much you lack.
- 18:27Speaker 2: But he's just the one to play behind.
- 18:31Speaker 1: He was so locked in with like, yeah, I just
- 18:34Speaker 1: threw a bad pitch. That's sucking whatever, I'm onto the
- 18:36Speaker 1: next And I was like so laser focused. Probably was
- 18:39Speaker 1: one of the most laser focused.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Well, I think it's because I had such a hard
- 18:43Speaker 6: time with that early in my career, you know, So
- 18:46Speaker 6: I was so concerned about the hit or the hit
- 18:49Speaker 6: by pitch or the walk. I'm like, oh, Ship, can't
- 18:52Speaker 6: do that again. It's like no, I mean things happened.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Let's let's toe the toe the rubber and this is the.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Only one that matters.
- 18:58Speaker 5: It's cool you flipped it.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Yeah, well, and we were talking about it before. You know,
- 19:02Speaker 6: he didn't He didn't need a lot of the mental
- 19:04Speaker 6: game stuff. He kept it super simple, like my job
- 19:08Speaker 6: is to execute this pitch.
- 19:10Speaker 3: If I don't, I'm gonna execute the next one.
- 19:12Speaker 2: For me.
- 19:13Speaker 6: And I think it had to do with kind of
- 19:15Speaker 6: the progression of my early years of my career. I
- 19:17Speaker 6: needed some of that. I needed I needed kind of
- 19:22Speaker 6: a strategy to deal with that. Yeah, And for first, first.
- 19:25Speaker 3: And foremost, it was preparation was number one, you know.
- 19:28Speaker 6: And I think what was most impressive watching you and
- 19:31Speaker 6: watching Lester is like how prepared you guys were with everything.
- 19:36Speaker 6: He had a checklist pretty much without actually having it
- 19:38Speaker 6: on paper. I gotta do ABC X y Z, throw
- 19:43Speaker 6: my bullpen, take care of my shoulder, do my routine,
- 19:46Speaker 6: and then I know when I tole the rubber on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
- 19:49Speaker 3: This is the fun part.
- 19:50Speaker 2: What was your five day I want to hear both
- 19:52Speaker 2: of you guys five day routine without without the alcohol drinking.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Oh no, I want to hear all of it.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Like day like the day after.
- 20:01Speaker 4: It would always be like a long, long cardio session
- 20:04Speaker 4: and legs like lift legs, and then uh, second second
- 20:08Speaker 4: day would be usually throw a bullpen upper body and
- 20:12Speaker 4: then like some interval work kind of deal and a
- 20:15Speaker 4: lot of shoulder like you know, gets your shoulder tight,
- 20:18Speaker 4: you know, all those you know, little weights, all that
- 20:21Speaker 4: maintenance stuff. And then uh, the third day was kind
- 20:24Speaker 4: of kind of like a full body like kind of
- 20:28Speaker 4: kind of like just a little light day light on everything,
- 20:31Speaker 4: you know, it's kind of moving around and run a
- 20:34Speaker 4: little bit. And then fourth day was mostly just sprints
- 20:37Speaker 4: and like I would do hot cold punch, especially like
- 20:39Speaker 4: my last few years when I got a little older,
- 20:42Speaker 4: I felt like the hot cold punch made my body
- 20:44Speaker 4: feel better the next day kind of stuff.
- 20:46Speaker 2: So you're bullpen second day, second day, how much alcohol
- 20:49Speaker 2: would you consume after the game?
- 20:52Speaker 4: And then well, I mean, let's be I mean, you
- 20:54Speaker 4: guys know I had a bar next to my locker
- 20:57Speaker 4: get to the but uh yeah, I mean, like, let's
- 21:02Speaker 4: be honest, I'm either going to celebrate the w or
- 21:04Speaker 4: I'm gonna drown my sorrows after the game.
- 21:06Speaker 5: When one of the dudes co Be is going down,
- 21:10Speaker 5: well that.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Throw playing behind you and beginning to be your teammate
- 21:14Speaker 1: was like so awesome because you see the laser focus,
- 21:18Speaker 1: like you see the intensity, and then you also see
- 21:21Speaker 1: the switch turn off into like the nicest human being
- 21:24Speaker 1: in the world. Where it was like in baseball. It's
- 21:27Speaker 1: really hard to do that and there's not a lot
- 21:29Speaker 1: of guys that can do that.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Tell him why, I tell him, you're honestly, Honestly, God,
- 21:34Speaker 4: I wasn't good enough to be be happy on the mountain,
- 21:37Speaker 4: like like my my freaking I was. I was decently talented,
- 21:41Speaker 4: but I didn't throw ninety eight with all the crazy
- 21:44Speaker 4: you know stuff.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I had to be a little angry and had to
- 21:47Speaker 5: be a little fu you know what I mean.
- 21:48Speaker 6: Yeah, but always telling you I got I gotta go
- 21:51Speaker 6: to a dark place.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I have to that.
- 21:53Speaker 3: But then after the game, right, he's I tried.
- 21:56Speaker 5: I tried to leave it in enough where we're going
- 21:58Speaker 5: to dinner.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeahere we're going. Let's go, I'm buying.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll bust thanks.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Let's get it.
- 22:03Speaker 1: We we after we get swept. You signing over with
- 22:06Speaker 1: us was another like momentum for us who recruited you?
- 22:11Speaker 5: Was it, oh Lester?
- 22:13Speaker 4: Was it ROSSI I didn't actually I didn't really tell
- 22:16Speaker 4: you what dude Lester called me seriously every day for
- 22:18Speaker 4: a couple of weeks like like or like tax, like, hey,
- 22:21Speaker 4: where we at? Like and obviously I feel we had
- 22:24Speaker 4: a we had a relationship from signing with Boston and
- 22:28Speaker 4: I had obviously had some other teams that are pretty
- 22:31Speaker 4: interested and ended up taking less money to come join
- 22:34Speaker 4: you guys because I had boys there and I saw
- 22:37Speaker 4: the the trajectory you guys were on that it was
- 22:40Speaker 4: a chance to win and winning beats money all day.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Well, because you came in and like instantly like we're
- 22:47Speaker 1: like part of I remember at sixteen, like we were
- 22:49Speaker 1: talking about winning the World Series right away you were
- 22:51Speaker 1: part of that.
- 22:53Speaker 5: That's not easy.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I mean we just you just we just beat you guys,
- 22:56Speaker 1: So that another's hatred.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I hated you.
- 22:59Speaker 1: They I also star. I have one hitoff lack and
- 23:02Speaker 1: I stunk off.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So, like the fact that you were able to come
- 23:06Speaker 1: in and just start breeding that championship mindset as well
- 23:09Speaker 1: was huge for our young group.
- 23:11Speaker 4: That's one thing we did in Boston too. We talked,
- 23:13Speaker 4: we talked about it from day one, and we kind
- 23:16Speaker 4: of kind of followed that that that playbook a little
- 23:18Speaker 4: bit like we'll start talking about the parade right now.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It's been it's been a theme in these conversations, like
- 23:23Speaker 2: guys that like KB and DEX that hadn't been a
- 23:25Speaker 2: lot of winnings, Like we we talked about what it
- 23:27Speaker 2: was going to look like and like foreshadowed and when
- 23:29Speaker 2: you've got you know, guys, the talent we had and
- 23:32Speaker 2: the experience that we had in the room mixed in
- 23:35Speaker 2: with good talent young guys. I mean obviously, like looking back,
- 23:40Speaker 2: like there's a so much talent in that room from
- 23:42Speaker 2: a young perspective, and the championships that that were in
- 23:46Speaker 2: that room. I think we had such a good mix.
- 23:48Speaker 2: But you you're such a you're such a good example
- 23:53Speaker 2: of piece to the puzzle, a great teammate. And then
- 23:59Speaker 2: when I go to work, I go to fucking work boys,
- 24:01Speaker 2: like it ain't we ain't fucking around now, like it's
- 24:03Speaker 2: it's you know, and I I you know, I get
- 24:06Speaker 2: I was angry on the days I played because of
- 24:08Speaker 2: like I don't want to not on my day, you
- 24:10Speaker 2: know what I mean, not on my day. I get
- 24:12Speaker 2: that you have something to Yeah, yeah, well it's like
- 24:14Speaker 2: I get to I get you know, I joke all
- 24:16Speaker 2: the time. Lester stinks I don't get my fourth at bat,
- 24:19Speaker 2: you know, I like to play the whole nine innings.
- 24:23Speaker 2: But like, yeah, it's like there is a that sense
- 24:25Speaker 2: of that sense of like, you know, I just don't
- 24:28Speaker 2: want to be the guy that lets the boys down
- 24:30Speaker 2: my day. Yeah, we don't want to win on that day.
- 24:32Speaker 1: What were you thinking? Because from a position player we
- 24:34Speaker 1: had with you know, Shobert, Addie, Hobvey, KB, we had
- 24:38Speaker 1: all these dudes, Decks Jay, we signed ja to that
- 24:41Speaker 1: off season.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Zobrist.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You were there when we stunk. You were there when
- 24:45Speaker 1: the pitching staff wasn't very good. Now we have you.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Lester carl is shoving and turns into a may young superstar.
- 24:55Speaker 1: We get lack we Hammel, like, what are you thinking
- 24:58Speaker 1: from the pitching side and.
- 24:59Speaker 6: The leader of well, you know, you look at the
- 25:03Speaker 6: front office does their job and now, hey, they gave
- 25:05Speaker 6: us all the pieces necessary to get it done, you know,
- 25:09Speaker 6: and we we've.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Talked about it a lot.
- 25:11Speaker 6: It's like we had the perfect storm of young talent,
- 25:17Speaker 6: veteran leadership.
- 25:18Speaker 3: You know, guys like myself and and Hendrix and.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Some role players, everybody performed.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Everyone.
- 25:26Speaker 2: I just can't great coaching staff.
- 25:28Speaker 6: I mean everybody, training staff, coaching staff, the support system,
- 25:33Speaker 6: the people behind the scenes that don't get recognized. Yeah,
- 25:36Speaker 6: I mean he's kind of the glue, right, Yeah, always
- 25:39Speaker 6: talk about that.
- 25:40Speaker 3: But you know, and as a starting pitcher.
- 25:43Speaker 6: We have one out of five days to show our
- 25:46Speaker 6: team why we're here and what we're capable of. And
- 25:50Speaker 6: there was so much more on the line for us
- 25:52Speaker 6: because then if I should, we shit the bed. We
- 25:54Speaker 6: got to sit here for four days, and you know,
- 25:57Speaker 6: and you're out there every day, right, and if you
- 26:01Speaker 6: go for four you're doing it again tomorrow.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:03Speaker 6: If I give up six and three innings, it's like, fuck,
- 26:06Speaker 6: I let us down. Yeah, you know, we got to
- 26:08Speaker 6: have four or five guys out of the bullpen come
- 26:10Speaker 6: in and changes the complexion of the game completely. And
- 26:13Speaker 6: if that's a loss, like I wear that. I don't
- 26:15Speaker 6: think it's pitch thirty thirty two games a year. You're
- 26:19Speaker 6: out there in one fifty five or however many so
- 26:21Speaker 6: on sixty.
- 26:21Speaker 5: One that year.
- 26:22Speaker 7: But it's not okay, fine, like the league the league,
- 26:25Speaker 7: but like that's that's that's why, that's why guys like
- 26:28Speaker 7: us went to a certain place because I'm not going
- 26:32Speaker 7: to allow any bit of being unprepared determine.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Whether we win or lose.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Yeah, Like if I get if if we lose the
- 26:39Speaker 6: game that I pitch, it's because I just wasn't. The
- 26:43Speaker 6: guys on the other side were just a little bit better,
- 26:45Speaker 6: and sometimes that happened, right, I would. I never wanted
- 26:48Speaker 6: to give the opponent too much credit. But I heard
- 26:52Speaker 6: this a long time ago. It's like, you have to
- 26:54Speaker 6: recognize that the guys on the other side get paid
- 26:56Speaker 6: a lot of money to play too, Right. That doesn't
- 26:59Speaker 6: mean hey, if I lost, like so what, No, it's
- 27:01Speaker 6: just that guy's making twenty million.
- 27:03Speaker 3: He's really good too. Right.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I learned that a great manager moment that
- 27:08Speaker 2: just pops in as you say that. It's like I
- 27:10Speaker 2: got a day game in Atlanta. I was playing for
- 27:12Speaker 2: the Braves, and I faced Roy Holiday and up there
- 27:15Speaker 2: grinding and mccamn plays Brian McCann's you know all Stars,
- 27:19Speaker 2: sick time silver Slugger. So I've got the day game
- 27:22Speaker 2: Roy Holliday. I'm over for four four punches. I'm dragging
- 27:24Speaker 2: my back back like I'm the worst player on the
- 27:25Speaker 2: planet and Bobby Cox goes, man, that guy's really good today, ROSSI,
- 27:29Speaker 2: And it was like one of those like changing the mindset,
- 27:31Speaker 2: like how your manager can like make you see stuff
- 27:32Speaker 2: a little bit different, but you're right when like we're
- 27:35Speaker 2: all out there competing. And the thing I like about
- 27:38Speaker 2: our fifteen and sixteen team, we didn't beat ourselves. Somebody
- 27:41Speaker 2: may y'll pitch us every once in a while, or
- 27:43Speaker 2: they may get the big hit we didn't get, but
- 27:45Speaker 2: I didn't never felt like we left there and Boston
- 27:47Speaker 2: was like that a lot, like we never left there thinking, man,
- 27:50Speaker 2: we gave that one away nine times out of ten.
- 27:54Speaker 2: That team just happened to get it was their day.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I think that's a credible joke. Honestly, in Joe's mindset
- 27:59Speaker 1: for us young guys like do simple better. That was
- 28:02Speaker 1: his first thing. He said, like, just make the routine play.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You didn't care if we messed up. It was a
- 28:06Speaker 1: mental defensively he would he would get mad, but then
- 28:11Speaker 1: he let everyone be himself. So you have your manager
- 28:15Speaker 1: kind of doing that and trickling down to these young
- 28:17Speaker 1: position players that like you're already established. I'm pretty much established.
- 28:22Speaker 1: You just want to sy young you're well in your career.
- 28:24Speaker 1: But these young guys, all these young guys like Joe,
- 28:27Speaker 1: let me be me that group, Hovey B Hobby, KB,
- 28:33Speaker 1: Blossom playing the utility, having Zoger. So it was like
- 28:37Speaker 1: we did simple better and that made us better.
- 28:40Speaker 2: And you noticed the evolution of Joe. You had him
- 28:42Speaker 2: and Anaheim when you yeah, that's crazy, like and see
- 28:45Speaker 2: how his journey went and the things he's learned and evolved,
- 28:48Speaker 2: like it's it's you look back on some things, man,
- 28:51Speaker 2: it's like it was a it was a special time.
- 28:55Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, you know we also did really well too,
- 28:58Speaker 6: and Joe kind of establish this.
- 29:01Speaker 3: But the older veteran players, we made the young guys.
- 29:04Speaker 6: As comfortable as possible, absolutely from day one, you know,
- 29:08Speaker 6: the old school veteran kind of bullshit, like you got
- 29:11Speaker 6: to earn your stripes, like don't you can't, shouldn't be
- 29:14Speaker 6: in the training room all all that crap.
- 29:17Speaker 3: No, Like I need KB and Schwarber and Wilson and Hobby.
- 29:21Speaker 3: I need them to be.
- 29:23Speaker 6: Comfortable, comfortable and as prepared as possible because that helps us.
- 29:27Speaker 6: It helps me, it helps you, It helps our team
- 29:30Speaker 6: win baseball game.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I feel like it takes one bad egg to to
- 29:34Speaker 1: and like, bro, you got called up an O two.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Same with you, you guys. I know for a fact
- 29:39Speaker 1: you guys were getting absolutely annihilated as probably rookies and
- 29:43Speaker 1: or or such. Some point.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I definitely had a veteran I hated, I want to kill.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Well, it's not to say there weren't. There were great
- 29:50Speaker 3: ones too.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Totally black was the old You're probably the oldest on
- 29:55Speaker 1: the team, right, and you were the nicest honestly like
- 29:59Speaker 1: you you were able to talk to guys. So I
- 30:02Speaker 1: was oestionally yeh, look.
- 30:05Speaker 2: This is way more gray, more miles on that body.
- 30:11Speaker 1: But the professionalism that you demanded was in a way
- 30:15Speaker 1: of like I almost felt like encouragement, like yeah, you
- 30:18Speaker 1: got pissed off my guys and at times like it's
- 30:20Speaker 1: stressful playing, but it's because you're demanding the best out
- 30:23Speaker 1: of us.
- 30:26Speaker 2: My thing I love the most. And this is like,
- 30:28Speaker 2: if I can sum up John Lackey in one sentence
- 30:32Speaker 2: of the example you said is like I didn't come
- 30:34Speaker 2: here for the haircut, right, Like that's an iconic moment
- 30:37Speaker 2: in sixteen that's like what are your expectations? You know?
- 30:42Speaker 2: And you got to verbade them. It's like, I came
- 30:45Speaker 2: here for jewelry. You know what is it? What it is?
- 30:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I don't think I wrote it.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I did come here for the haircut. I came here
- 30:50Speaker 2: for jewelry, right, like you know what I mean. And
- 30:52Speaker 2: and but like the simple you said earlier, like his
- 30:56Speaker 2: simple formula of like I'm gonna go out here, I'm
- 30:58Speaker 2: gonna give my all and I'm gonna try to you know,
- 31:00Speaker 2: I'm a fuck all these guys here I.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Come, and everybody in the room knew that.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, he's kind of a zipart ass response
- 31:08Speaker 4: really to a asked you what were your expectations?
- 31:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean yeah, well the hell you think we're
- 31:15Speaker 5: trying to win the whole damn thing? Yeah.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker 1: But like hearing that though from your your bulls, yeah,
- 31:20Speaker 1: as a young guy is like to another shot of
- 31:23Speaker 1: confidence that is leading to this.
- 31:25Speaker 6: It's a great point because instead of just trying to
- 31:28Speaker 6: stay in the big leagues, like no, we're trying to
- 31:31Speaker 6: I'm trying to be an All star, I'm trying to
- 31:33Speaker 6: be a World Series champion yep. And that kind of
- 31:36Speaker 6: elevates your confidence a little.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Bit, you know, and setting those goals. You don't like
- 31:40Speaker 2: relax when you get to the postseason like, oh, we
- 31:42Speaker 2: made it in or we made it to the DS
- 31:45Speaker 2: or whatever, Like no, no, no, we we saw last year,
- 31:48Speaker 2: Like what it in fifteen, what it took to get
- 31:51Speaker 2: to the Championship Series and got swept. It's like, no,
- 31:54Speaker 2: we we're going. We'll go to dance and like that's
- 31:57Speaker 2: just a product of experience and being around. But you've
- 31:59Speaker 2: got that such a young age and like the veterans
- 32:01Speaker 2: that carry that confidence and pass it around and speak
- 32:04Speaker 2: it and is real and I think it just it
- 32:07Speaker 2: bleeds into young guys and gives them, gives them more
- 32:09Speaker 2: confidence and along with letting them feel comfortable.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I like in sixteen thinking about when we knew
- 32:15Speaker 1: we were really good, which we knew from the get go.
- 32:18Speaker 1: But I always go to your first start in Arizona
- 32:22Speaker 1: and you gave up six in like I think three innings,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and we on an offensive side were like it doesn't matter,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and we ended up boat racing them. You ended up
- 32:32Speaker 1: going six innings, which is like unheard of nowadays.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the who was our pr guy?
- 32:38Speaker 4: I think it's the most rules hitter chase, most runs
- 32:40Speaker 4: I ever gave up my career and still won.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Really yeah, Oh Schwarber went down that game though, Yeah,
- 32:46Speaker 1: that's right, and like that right there was the start
- 32:50Speaker 1: of our start to that season. Really was our third
- 32:53Speaker 1: or fourth game. But I look at that game from
- 32:55Speaker 1: an offensive standpoint and just from a team standpoint, no
- 32:59Speaker 1: one flinched. Yeah, and like at all it was your
- 33:02Speaker 1: first start for us, dude.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Our lineup was we're never never out of it.
- 33:07Speaker 2: My favorite got another Lackey line, which is while we're
- 33:10Speaker 2: doing them all because I feel like this guy they
- 33:11Speaker 2: just come is like Rossy never lost with twelve and
- 33:14Speaker 2: airtight defense never Yeah you love his handle the wrist. Yeah,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'll handle hit all you guys. Give me twelve runs
- 33:21Speaker 2: an airtight defense. I've got yall problem.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I think we were good as far as like really
- 33:27Speaker 1: believing like that group.
- 33:30Speaker 6: I mean, for me, it was in the off season
- 33:32Speaker 6: of after fifteen. Yeah, knowing the guys that we have
- 33:36Speaker 6: coming in, the young players that are that had been
- 33:40Speaker 6: there and the ones that are right behind them right
- 33:42Speaker 6: right then still got it like on paper, yes, but
- 33:46Speaker 6: we had you know, I won the of fifteen, like
- 33:48Speaker 6: I knew things were continuing to move forward.
- 33:51Speaker 3: In the right direction. I knew the young players that
- 33:53Speaker 3: were coming coming up through the system. It's like, this
- 33:55Speaker 3: is this is our chance, you know.
- 33:57Speaker 1: The camaraderie was like time. Lester set the tone when
- 34:03Speaker 1: in fifteen, I feel like he came in with the
- 34:05Speaker 1: big contract. He was so generous for all of his
- 34:07Speaker 1: bost cowboy boots, all the Team Dinners. And then you
- 34:10Speaker 1: get there and it's like, I remember, I think it
- 34:12Speaker 1: was in Saint Louis or we were somewhere early and
- 34:15Speaker 1: he went to pay for the bill, but you already
- 34:17Speaker 1: pro move gave it to the hostess when we walked in.
- 34:20Speaker 5: I don't have to do that.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's but that was the first time I
- 34:23Speaker 1: had seen that done, and I was like, all right,
- 34:25Speaker 1: lock and they like our Team Dinners were the Team
- 34:28Speaker 1: Dinners because it was like we knew that it was
- 34:30Speaker 1: going to be this.
- 34:31Speaker 5: We have some good ones. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 3: It was like we didn't have to pay for any
- 34:34Speaker 3: Team Donner.
- 34:35Speaker 5: I didn't pay.
- 34:36Speaker 2: I'm still riding these guys hotel.
- 34:37Speaker 5: Yeah, well, like that's I think you're.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Just when every other one for a while is yeah, literally,
- 34:42Speaker 4: you guys will be fighting over who's paying for this.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Probably eight to ten downs.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But you but you were brought up that way.
- 34:49Speaker 5: That's the way it was. Yeah, it was not a
- 34:51Speaker 5: big deal.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got three rings. I think about sixteen and
- 34:57Speaker 2: can you look back on the championship teams you've been
- 35:00Speaker 2: on and like what stands out that's similar in each one.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Of the locker rooms, the way we got along off
- 35:11Speaker 4: the field, Like uh, like the team dinners, Like Boston
- 35:15Speaker 4: we had twenty two man team dinners, just like we
- 35:18Speaker 4: had had in Chicago Anaheim, like we had we only
- 35:23Speaker 4: had a couple of rookies there.
- 35:24Speaker 5: That was back when the game was a little different.
- 35:26Speaker 5: You know, it was more veterans and a couple.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Of rookies, right, but they they took care of us, like, man,
- 35:30Speaker 4: I didn't I didn't pay for a freaking lunch my
- 35:33Speaker 4: whole rookie year.
- 35:34Speaker 5: It'd be like kid be downstairs in fifteen, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 5: like just just.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Pros the hotel phone.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, it really loves the hotel phones exactly.
- 35:43Speaker 2: But knocking.
- 35:46Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know what really helps to the camaraderie
- 35:48Speaker 6: and chemistry is getting to know your teammates significant significant
- 35:54Speaker 6: other or girl or kids.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Right like when we walk in the club. I was like,
- 35:59Speaker 3: how's Emily or whatever? What's up with Christina and the kids?
- 36:02Speaker 3: Like that, It's like this guy cares.
- 36:04Speaker 2: You're pulling for a gun on a personal level in
- 36:06Speaker 2: the fight because you've hung out with him, You've got
- 36:09Speaker 2: drunk with him, You've guys partied all night, or we
- 36:11Speaker 2: you know, we went to a charity event that somebody
- 36:14Speaker 2: was having, and you just got to know. I think
- 36:16Speaker 2: that's the little secret of like, no, I'm lackting this
- 36:19Speaker 2: guy's at back because I care about it. Yes, yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 2: and we care like everybody cared about each other on
- 36:24Speaker 2: that team.
- 36:24Speaker 1: When you're doing that on a personal level, like you said,
- 36:27Speaker 1: that's when you went in my opinion, because there's a
- 36:29Speaker 1: lot of teammates that were just teammates that you know,
- 36:32Speaker 1: And it's really hard throughout my career, all our careers,
- 36:36Speaker 1: like how many guys do you really stay in touch
- 36:38Speaker 1: with now that you're done playing? Probably small, Like I
- 36:42Speaker 1: cannot talk to you guys for five years. As soon
- 36:44Speaker 1: as we see each other, it's picking back, right, yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 1: right back, because of that bond that we that we
- 36:49Speaker 1: put together in our investment in each.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Other and even obviously a lot of us were much
- 36:55Speaker 6: closer than some others, which is normal natural. We all
- 36:58Speaker 6: have different backgrounds. We're not going to be best friends
- 37:02Speaker 6: and get along all the time. But that's one of
- 37:05Speaker 6: my guys.
- 37:06Speaker 3: I don't. I don't.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It doesn't brother for life.
- 37:09Speaker 6: It doesn't matter if we view things differently and we
- 37:11Speaker 6: were from different continents er countries.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Like, we're in this together, you know.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Let's get into you guys's no hitter since he right, since.
- 37:21Speaker 2: The bucket list. You gave me a bucket list, bro,
- 37:23Speaker 2: that was well.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You guys are you guys are in the matching matching watches?
- 37:27Speaker 5: Yeah, check the watches. Let's go.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I saw that. I saw that he had
- 37:31Speaker 3: it on, so I had to pull it out.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I wc right here, pretty pricey area to hook man
- 37:39Speaker 2: with it. First of all to watch the amazing, but
- 37:41Speaker 2: like to play for as long as I got to
- 37:43Speaker 2: play mostly a backup and be in, I'd get to
- 37:49Speaker 2: catch a no hitter. I was so fucking nervous. We
- 37:52Speaker 2: got the game was like fifteen nothing, sixteen sixteen nothing.
- 37:55Speaker 2: It was beat down. It's a third game since the
- 37:58Speaker 2: sixth inning. I'm stressed. We got no hitters. I'm like,
- 38:01Speaker 2: don't funck this up rossly, you know. And I distinctly
- 38:04Speaker 2: remember like going to a lot of cutters and off
- 38:07Speaker 2: speed stuff and you shaking like no, I'm pumping heaters.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I'm pumping. He was like the sixth and seventh inning,
- 38:12Speaker 2: like I'm bringing heaters. I'm bringing heaters and guys are
- 38:15Speaker 2: rolling them over and popping them up, and I'm just
- 38:17Speaker 2: like like, I felt like it's funny. I've always pictured
- 38:21Speaker 2: a no hitter as this pride thing that I called
- 38:23Speaker 2: this amazing game, and I felt like he held my
- 38:25Speaker 2: hand like no, no, no, I've already got one of these.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Come with me. Don't be a big boy. Because I
- 38:30Speaker 2: had to watch a lot of people. Remember Lester, my
- 38:33Speaker 2: wife had at the time, had a emergency section. I
- 38:36Speaker 2: flew home. I wasn't in LA for the one Miggie
- 38:38Speaker 2: car that you threw there, and I was watching it
- 38:41Speaker 2: on my phone in as my you know, daughter daughter. Yeah,
- 38:47Speaker 2: but she was like a pound and a half in
- 38:49Speaker 2: this incubator and I'm like watching this and you're out
- 38:52Speaker 2: there carving in LA and then getting to experience that
- 38:54Speaker 2: was well, it was a.
- 38:55Speaker 6: Much different game than LA. Obviously we won sixteen nothing.
- 39:00Speaker 6: It didn't I mean it felt like a no hitter
- 39:02Speaker 6: as it progressed into the past the sixth, But my
- 39:05Speaker 6: stuff wasn't tremendous that night, la.
- 39:08Speaker 3: It was like video game. Wherever I wanted, it didn't
- 39:11Speaker 3: matter since it was like something that baseball game.
- 39:17Speaker 6: But so it was April twenty first, you know, in Cincinnati,
- 39:20Speaker 6: and it was just the stuff was moving like crazy,
- 39:22Speaker 6: but I couldn't command it that well. So I knew
- 39:25Speaker 6: that I'm just going to throw this sinker in the zone,
- 39:28Speaker 6: try and try and elevate it a bit. And I
- 39:30Speaker 6: think I had five punch.
- 39:31Speaker 5: Outs that I remember.
- 39:32Speaker 3: It moving wasn't a lot of punch outs.
- 39:34Speaker 6: It was just weak contact, miss hitting the ball, missing barrels,
- 39:39Speaker 6: and it happened. Dude, I got crazy crazy well, and
- 39:45Speaker 6: you know it's I was always told and how long
- 39:48Speaker 6: this has been a thing forever? Right, It's like, you
- 39:50Speaker 6: don't know, hitter, you buy it, you buy the catcher.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's a grave from the back of the
- 39:54Speaker 2: d the score where I was like, so, so it's
- 39:57Speaker 2: like this is my when I dress up, this is
- 39:59Speaker 2: the one I wear.
- 40:00Speaker 5: I've got.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I'm glad you're wearing the man lesser.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Oh I brought it for this Lessard gave me a
- 40:04Speaker 2: role like for at two hundred win and I guess
- 40:06Speaker 2: I had caught the most And it's like I wear
- 40:08Speaker 2: those the two watches I wear, it's like this one
- 40:10Speaker 2: when I dress up and his kind of mind you
- 40:12Speaker 2: free ship jewel two rings.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Guys, it's way different style, Like this is kind of
- 40:21Speaker 3: our style, right, yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 3: The one that I bought Miggy was a brightling with
- 40:25Speaker 3: a bunch of diamonds.
- 40:26Speaker 2: And was perfect to get a little Latino flare to.
- 40:29Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got a little style too, but that was
- 40:31Speaker 5: that was a.
- 40:32Speaker 2: I remember hugging you and telling you thank you at
- 40:34Speaker 2: all that and you were like.
- 40:35Speaker 5: That's a huge deal.
- 40:36Speaker 1: As a catcher, bro, Bro, I obviously guy's a picture too,
- 40:39Speaker 1: but well, the preparation that the catchers go through is probably.
- 40:45Speaker 6: More, I don't want to say more than anybody else,
- 40:47Speaker 6: but just watching the catching corps and the catching coaches
- 40:51Speaker 6: go through video and break down scouting reports, it makes
- 40:54Speaker 6: our job so much easier.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I have said this for years, and I did this
- 40:58Speaker 1: for my career. I studied catchers a lot of times
- 41:01Speaker 1: more than pictures. I knew what you guys were throwing.
- 41:03Speaker 1: But like with YACHTI with you, it's different because you're
- 41:06Speaker 1: a veteran. But with Yadi Molina catching, there's no young
- 41:09Speaker 1: guy shaking him. Yatti's calling the game.
- 41:11Speaker 5: So if you did, nobody shook.
- 41:13Speaker 1: If you did shake, I had to in my in
- 41:15Speaker 1: the box real quick start programming like okay, oh fuck,
- 41:18Speaker 1: this is rare, right. Wayne Wright never really shook YACHTI.
- 41:22Speaker 1: If it was too quick shakes, it was I knew
- 41:23Speaker 1: YACHTI was calling the fake shape. So, like studying catchers
- 41:28Speaker 1: was a huge part because bro, if you guys don't
- 41:31Speaker 1: have it that game, who's gonna help maneuver you through
- 41:33Speaker 1: that game?
- 41:34Speaker 5: Him?
- 41:34Speaker 1: What's the pitching coach? And a con say, hey, you're
- 41:36Speaker 1: doing no it's yeah, And.
- 41:39Speaker 2: That's my favor. That was my favorite part of the
- 41:40Speaker 2: game was the we had a moment in game six
- 41:44Speaker 2: the World Series where we clinched in Boston where I
- 41:48Speaker 2: threw au It was a two two breaking ball they
- 41:50Speaker 2: got by me and I think we're only up a
- 41:52Speaker 2: couple of runs and the guy went to second and
- 41:55Speaker 2: there's two outs and I went to the mouths I
- 41:58Speaker 2: hate my bad and he's like, no big deal, just
- 42:01Speaker 2: gave it a minute, went back and called heater because
- 42:04Speaker 2: I was like, he's not gonna trust me to block
- 42:05Speaker 2: this ball, and he was like, nope, threw down a
- 42:08Speaker 2: breaking ball. He's like, yep, through another one in the
- 42:10Speaker 2: dirt out block. It punched the guy out and we
- 42:11Speaker 2: get out of it, and I credit I told him
- 42:13Speaker 2: after that. I was like, Bro, I'm so glad you
- 42:15Speaker 2: shook to that. That gave me confidence in myself and
- 42:18Speaker 2: he had the confidence to trust me to do that.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Like that's the stuff that that off the field stuff
- 42:23Speaker 2: we're talking about and going to bars and to dinners
- 42:25Speaker 2: and out.
- 42:28Speaker 6: Dude, and also my guy, I knew how much effort
- 42:32Speaker 6: and time you put into the game. Yeah right, Like
- 42:37Speaker 6: if I give it a homer, you're not pissed at me,
- 42:41Speaker 6: You're just pissed that it happened.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Yeah right. I talked about the Lester relationship and what
- 42:45Speaker 2: we had was like, Bro, that was my brother. Like
- 42:48Speaker 2: when he sucked, I sucked. You know, we're in this together,
- 42:50Speaker 2: you know, so you're you love your brother, but you
- 42:53Speaker 2: get mad at your brother and do those You're you're
- 42:55Speaker 2: pushing your brother to be great because it makes me great.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Like I his success is my success.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Know.
- 43:00Speaker 2: That's that's how I took them.
- 43:01Speaker 1: That's quick no hitter story Alec Mills years later, through
- 43:05Speaker 1: a no hitter to Victor. I managed that, and I'm
- 43:09Speaker 1: giving Cartini ship like bro Mills is on a rookie deal,
- 43:12Speaker 1: like you're gonna get a fossil watch. So literally a
- 43:17Speaker 1: week later, I ordered a fossil watch and I took
- 43:19Speaker 1: like the printer label and I just put no hitter
- 43:21Speaker 1: and abled the back of the watch and I put
- 43:24Speaker 1: it Cart's locker.
- 43:25Speaker 5: That's great, That's loved it.
- 43:27Speaker 3: It's kind of a tough spot to be in, though,
- 43:29Speaker 3: you know.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I'm honestly looking back now, I do it. I should
- 43:32Speaker 1: have bought the watches from so but it's a picture
- 43:35Speaker 1: catcher thing.
- 43:35Speaker 2: But I think the Cubs gave us then after your
- 43:38Speaker 2: no hitter first one right that the Nola watched.
- 43:42Speaker 3: They gave one to the entire team. They gave me
- 43:44Speaker 3: a Cardier one year, and then a Carl Booker watch
- 43:48Speaker 3: I got.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I got a couple of one of my favorites. I
- 43:50Speaker 2: got two things that are hanging in my house. Everything
- 43:52Speaker 2: else is like in my garage, in my kind of
- 43:54Speaker 2: man room. But I've got my hundred home run jersey
- 43:57Speaker 2: that they gave me and then they gave us. You've
- 44:00Speaker 2: got the rubber from the from the no hitter. Yeah,
- 44:02Speaker 2: I've got the plate frame and it's it's like, what
- 44:04Speaker 2: a cool thing to have that it has got all
- 44:07Speaker 2: the spike marks from people the wall. Yeah.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So I gave the fucking ball back. You gave that,
- 44:15Speaker 1: kept it and sold it. Let's go back to our
- 44:19Speaker 1: locker room. M hm, do you I'm going to kind
- 44:23Speaker 1: of paint the picture where were you at? You were
- 44:25Speaker 1: you were right next to them, to.
- 44:26Speaker 5: Do you walk?
- 44:26Speaker 6: You walk through the tunnel right like you're coming back
- 44:28Speaker 6: from the game. Yeah, it's just directly on the other side.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Lesser Lackey areata? Is that right?
- 44:34Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 44:34Speaker 5: And between them.
- 44:36Speaker 1: In between them though, is an empty locker with a
- 44:38Speaker 1: beer fridge. Yes, it's a nice size fridge. Yeah, it's
- 44:42Speaker 1: it's the bar. It's basically the team bar. Like it
- 44:46Speaker 1: was fun with all that after the game, you guys
- 44:48Speaker 1: we have drinks or after your start you see you
- 44:50Speaker 1: guys having a beer and whatnot. But I feel like
- 44:53Speaker 1: the significance of that to like show young guys that,
- 44:56Speaker 1: like you can lock in and do all this hard work,
- 45:00Speaker 1: but it's also okay to just relax and enjoy life
- 45:03Speaker 1: a little bit too.
- 45:05Speaker 4: That was one of the things that I wanted to
- 45:06Speaker 4: have fun too off the field, and one of my
- 45:09Speaker 4: favorite things to do is take out young guys. You know,
- 45:11Speaker 4: we can hang out at the hotel bar, maybe shut
- 45:13Speaker 4: it down a little bit, and I try to be
- 45:15Speaker 4: the first one there, like I'd want to be sweating,
- 45:17Speaker 4: yes when they walked in, just let them know they
- 45:21Speaker 4: gonna do it on both sides.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Here, We're gonna have fun last night, but it's time
- 45:24Speaker 5: to grind.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Now, Well, what's the quoe You got to earn your party?
- 45:27Speaker 5: Yeah, you do, got to earn your party.
- 45:29Speaker 2: And I had had an old vet to leadership, bro.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're gona say hoop with the eyes, you
- 45:33Speaker 4: gotta get up sore the Eagles.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Old vet told me that.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Well, and that's that. The stuff that you're talking about.
- 45:39Speaker 2: This is what I think, like this thing that I
- 45:42Speaker 2: kind of talk about a lot is accountability. You're holding
- 45:46Speaker 2: yourself accountable by saying I'm gonna be the first motherfucker
- 45:49Speaker 2: there because I was out, I was partying as hard
- 45:51Speaker 2: as everybody else in that room. I'm gonna be the
- 45:53Speaker 2: first one there sweating. So when they walk in, I'm
- 45:55Speaker 2: like I had that with d Lo. Dlo would would
- 45:57Speaker 2: would run it hard, and you know what, six am,
- 45:59Speaker 2: he's out there in stadiums. I'm like the hell in
- 46:01Speaker 2: spring training? You know, Like that's the accountability that I
- 46:04Speaker 2: feel like. That's a good leadership example from from veterans
- 46:09Speaker 2: that goes unnoticed a lot of times.
- 46:11Speaker 6: Well, because if you if you partake in some of
- 46:13Speaker 6: the fun ship, you don't show up and do your work,
- 46:17Speaker 6: you lose the trust.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you have your of your team.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Well, the thing is when you do it together, you
- 46:21Speaker 1: show up because you know you have to fucking right.
- 46:24Speaker 1: You saw me at me, you know whatever, I was
- 46:27Speaker 1: doing something yeah right, or we were up till four
- 46:31Speaker 1: at the at the in the hotel and it's like ship, like,
- 46:35Speaker 1: these are my guys. You guys may not be playing,
- 46:37Speaker 1: but I am, and I can't be doing that and
- 46:41Speaker 1: not gaining your respect by not showing.
- 46:43Speaker 3: I don't know if there's a team that I had
- 46:44Speaker 3: more fun on.
- 46:45Speaker 1: To be honest, well, bro, like, let's talk about our
- 46:47Speaker 1: fucking trips we did in.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Season the the.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Pebble Beach, Tebble Beach, Kenny Chesney, Pebble Beach to Kenny Chesney.
- 46:55Speaker 1: That was like on vacation while playing.
- 46:58Speaker 2: We landed. We had an off day on Thursday in Oakland.
- 47:03Speaker 2: We're going to play the A's and we had a
- 47:05Speaker 2: Wednesday day game flew and we're gonna spend the off
- 47:08Speaker 2: day on the West Coast. When we landed in Oakland,
- 47:10Speaker 2: Lester had a private plane that flew us to Pebble Beach.
- 47:13Speaker 2: We all had our own room at Pebble partiall suite,
- 47:16Speaker 2: partial View loves it, he loves barls View, play golf
- 47:22Speaker 2: all day, get back on the PJ Win Friday Day
- 47:25Speaker 2: game Saturday one Saturday party bus to the job, the
- 47:31Speaker 2: forty nine Ers football Stadium, Kenny Chesney, backstage.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Hanging out, Kenny Chesney, Sammy Hagar.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Smmy Hagar. Old Dominion was there and I remember like
- 47:41Speaker 2: have a party, go back, beat the shit out of
- 47:44Speaker 2: Oakland again and head on, head on back home. It
- 47:46Speaker 2: was like one of the best trips I think we've
- 47:48Speaker 2: ever been out. We got some good photos like that.
- 47:51Speaker 2: That's that's the thing I say about Leicester, like doing
- 47:53Speaker 2: some of those things as a veteran with the perks
- 47:55Speaker 2: and the contract and the whole things like he and
- 47:58Speaker 2: Joe led us but like having that fun its pro Yeah.
- 48:01Speaker 3: Well those are opportunities.
- 48:04Speaker 6: You can't go back and do it again, you know,
- 48:06Speaker 6: Like and then Leicster was you two like we're gonna
- 48:10Speaker 6: take advantage of this opportunity.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Were looking that we played Houston and you couldn't go
- 48:15Speaker 2: because you had a pitch. But we went to TCU
- 48:17Speaker 2: watched the football game, remember that over was on TV.
- 48:21Speaker 3: That was awesome.
- 48:23Speaker 1: It was all, well, it broke up the season of
- 48:26Speaker 1: like we grind, grind, but it's like what kind of
- 48:30Speaker 1: fun we're gonna have too? Right, And it was like
- 48:32Speaker 1: that fun made playing fun because the playing fund made
- 48:35Speaker 1: the night more fun, right, And it was like, you win,
- 48:38Speaker 1: you can keep doing that. As soon as you start losing,
- 48:40Speaker 1: you could still do it, but it's a lot harder
- 48:42Speaker 1: to feel good about what you're doing because we're so
- 48:45Speaker 1: focused on winning.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Winning cures all for sure. Yeah, I'm sure we had
- 48:49Speaker 2: a lot of off the field fun in sixteen, Like
- 48:52Speaker 2: I remember vividly, and it was my last year knowing
- 48:56Speaker 2: on retiring, but playing with Dempster and Boston his last
- 48:59Speaker 2: year and watch and him experience fun, then going and
- 49:01Speaker 2: doing things in cities, taking advantage of moments like you
- 49:04Speaker 2: were that you were an outdoor to get like you
- 49:06Speaker 2: would get up and go on walks and cities and
- 49:08Speaker 2: do that every day every day. Like those things made
- 49:12Speaker 2: my end of my career a lot more fun. With
- 49:13Speaker 2: winning and also like going to New York and I
- 49:16Speaker 2: took some of the media guys on a helicopter tour
- 49:19Speaker 2: and like doing the Rocky Steps and going to get
- 49:21Speaker 2: Philly Philly's Cheese Stakes in the middle of the night
- 49:23Speaker 2: in Philadelphia. Know, just little stuff like that, And I
- 49:26Speaker 2: don't I wish I would have done that more in
- 49:28Speaker 2: my career. But the fact that I recognize that late
- 49:30Speaker 2: and and you're a lot of pressure early on is
- 49:32Speaker 2: of sure. But yeah, trying to establish yourself.
- 49:34Speaker 6: I always told young guys this, It's like, how many
- 49:37Speaker 6: times are you going to go to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee.
- 49:41Speaker 6: You know, I'm I'm not gonna just probably not going
- 49:43Speaker 6: on vacation in Milwaukee anytime soon.
- 49:45Speaker 3: No, but experience a city, get get up.
- 49:48Speaker 6: I mean, I'm not telling you to get four hours
- 49:50Speaker 6: of sleep and get up and go walk around town
- 49:52Speaker 6: and go play golf.
- 49:52Speaker 3: But see what, see what, see what it's all about.
- 49:56Speaker 2: You would go down in Pittsburgh, go to like he
- 49:57Speaker 2: would come back with these juices and I'm like, where'd
- 49:59Speaker 2: you find that?
- 50:00Speaker 3: I'm like everywhere.
- 50:01Speaker 2: He's like, bro, I'd go walk in here and I
- 50:02Speaker 2: found this spot.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Like you just like that was well because I'm not
- 50:05Speaker 3: going probably not going to Pittsburgh, you know.
- 50:07Speaker 6: Yeah right, but I love Pittsburgh. I enjoyed Cincinnati. Milwaukee
- 50:12Speaker 6: was cool, you know, and Kansas City whatever the city is, like.
- 50:15Speaker 2: I'll find your little spots right right.
- 50:17Speaker 3: Instead of sleeping in until one thirty on the field,
- 50:20Speaker 3: like figure out some things to do.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Sure, you know, sure, let's let's get rolling into the
- 50:24Speaker 1: playoffs here. And so yeah, we clinched in like August, right,
- 50:29Speaker 1: we still roll. We clinched. Early September, we clinched.
- 50:31Speaker 2: I've got a story actually about the beer fridge and
- 50:36Speaker 2: the I remember we clinched and the next day a
- 50:39Speaker 2: lot of those guys were there. Was like soon after
- 50:41Speaker 2: we had clinched, we had some of the rookies up
- 50:42Speaker 2: in September, We're playing Milwaukee. We're an extra innings and
- 50:46Speaker 2: do you remember when I came in and car washed.
- 50:48Speaker 5: The locker room.
- 50:48Speaker 2: It was it was Lester. They're at the beer fridge,
- 50:51Speaker 2: it was Lester, Sutcliffe, Lackey Areata And I'm going around.
- 50:57Speaker 2: I'm I'm human because nobody's on the bench. I'm looking around.
- 51:00Speaker 2: I'm not playing. Nobody's on the bench.
- 51:01Speaker 1: We had a great bench sixteen. Yeah, the bench was
- 51:04Speaker 1: the best part of our team.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, like nobody celebrate with these guys have been
- 51:07Speaker 2: playing all the time or back in the grind And
- 51:10Speaker 2: I walk in and I'm like scanning, and I'm getting
- 51:13Speaker 2: madder as I scanned, I was like, I can't yell
- 51:15Speaker 2: at him. I can't ye, I can't yell at him.
- 51:17Speaker 8: And then packs guy on my list was Robzi, Like Robsy,
- 51:22Speaker 8: you rooking fuck your ass out here, and cheer the
- 51:26Speaker 8: boys on. It was like I was like car washing
- 51:29Speaker 8: the whole the whole locker room, and all the boys
- 51:32Speaker 8: came out.
- 51:33Speaker 2: You guys got the picture. But it was like one
- 51:34Speaker 2: of those like supporting your teammates and all that and
- 51:36Speaker 2: me having one of my Grandpa ROSSI fucking angry moments.
- 51:40Speaker 2: But all you guys came out and we ended up
- 51:42Speaker 2: winning that It.
- 51:43Speaker 5: Was right, you guys be out there to support these
- 51:45Speaker 5: guys support.
- 51:46Speaker 2: Sun Cliffston tells me, I was like, bro, I remember
- 51:48Speaker 2: you coming out. I was scared down. I was like, well,
- 51:49Speaker 2: I was scanning the room and who I could yell at.
- 51:51Speaker 2: And the first guy came through it with Robsie.
- 51:54Speaker 3: It was great, you know the right thing.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Yeah, they were all throwing poff down or like the
- 51:58Speaker 2: eleventh it's like, hey, position.
- 52:01Speaker 1: It's hard. Like you get on the bench, you're grinding,
- 52:03Speaker 1: it's July August and no one's out there, and you're like, yeah, yeah,
- 52:05Speaker 1: these guys are like, oh it must be fucking nice.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Go throw your four, five, six seven inings and.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Right eight or nine eight or nine right elev Well.
- 52:14Speaker 1: The later in my career got shorter, but it's like
- 52:17Speaker 1: it must be nice, like we're out here grinding. But
- 52:20Speaker 1: then when the team is on.
- 52:21Speaker 2: The bench, it's like, yeah, it's been supports underrated man,
- 52:25Speaker 2: the guys panics. We were talking a little bit about
- 52:26Speaker 2: guys on ipass and all that stuff earlier. It's like
- 52:28Speaker 2: the guys paying attention on the bench is so valuable
- 52:31Speaker 2: and rooting those guys on. I think it's just like
- 52:33Speaker 2: one of those another you know thing that it goes
- 52:36Speaker 2: goes unrelated. But let's get to the playoffs.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Yeah, well we were rolling right, yeah, And for my
- 52:42Speaker 1: my vantage is like, damn we got We had the
- 52:45Speaker 1: Giants the first round, like they're on their even year, right, ten, twelve, fourteen,
- 52:49Speaker 1: Now it's sixteen, Like we're rolling through them. We go
- 52:53Speaker 1: Game one, was it? I believe it's Lester, Lester, cause you.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Pitch Game three and hit the home run a bum gardener, right,
- 53:01Speaker 2: you pitched Game two? Yeah, I've got to hear Game two.
- 53:04Speaker 2: I think it's like a little a little fuzzy seven innings,
- 53:08Speaker 2: two runs. Yeah, yeah, classes we won. We won that game,
- 53:11Speaker 2: but you you seven seven, yeah, seven and two.
- 53:16Speaker 1: But that first game at Wrigley, right, like send a
- 53:20Speaker 1: tone for us. A lot of pressure though, Like, yeah,
- 53:24Speaker 1: one hundred and eight years, we're rolling, we lose the year.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Before we win.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I think we win one nothing right on the hobby
- 53:30Speaker 1: fucking best team. Yeah, mammoth Homer.
- 53:33Speaker 5: That lands in the battle. Yeah.
- 53:34Speaker 4: That's the only thing I was worried about was the
- 53:36Speaker 4: we had that time, Like we had so much time
- 53:39Speaker 4: in between clinching and playing.
- 53:41Speaker 5: That was the only But I think Joe did a
- 53:43Speaker 5: good job. We did some scrimmages, you know, did some
- 53:45Speaker 5: stuff like that, scrimmages.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Let's get back to the scrimmage. I was so bad
- 53:50Speaker 1: off John Lackey, I owned you so bad in my
- 53:54Speaker 1: career that we're again, we're scrimmage to lock you in.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I know, we're scrimmaging before the game. He feels so
- 54:00Speaker 1: bad for me. Honestly, I was like a makeup kid
- 54:02Speaker 1: in this. He's like, here, I'm gonna throw you a
- 54:05Speaker 1: fastball down the middle, telling me what's coming, and I
- 54:07Speaker 1: still couldnt.
- 54:09Speaker 5: Even touch the ball. I think I popped it up. Yeah,
- 54:13Speaker 5: I don't know about that, but you did lock me in.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Yeah eventually.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Yeah, Oh guys, we're killing it.
- 54:17Speaker 1: We we go and one thing that sticks out is
- 54:20Speaker 1: your home run off. That was Game three, bro, we
- 54:23Speaker 1: put us up three. Nothing so good. Greatest bum guard,
- 54:28Speaker 1: the greatest postseason pitching all time.
- 54:30Speaker 5: Don't sleep on his VP. He's got sick pop.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Crazy pop I was.
- 54:34Speaker 6: I was telling David before we got in here, hitting
- 54:37Speaker 6: VP in Wrigley Field, and maybe it was monotonous to
- 54:40Speaker 6: you because you're doing it every day. It was the
- 54:42Speaker 6: most fun I had playing baseball, I think, and Bob
- 54:45Speaker 6: actually do. When those window wind was blowing and one
- 54:47Speaker 6: was going.
- 54:48Speaker 3: Out, we're trying to hit him over the street. But
- 54:51Speaker 3: Bos was awesome too.
- 54:52Speaker 6: He you know, I feel like some pitching coaches would
- 54:54Speaker 6: be like, just stop trying to hit over the fans.
- 54:57Speaker 3: Get your work in. He wanted to see how.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Far he encouraged it.
- 55:00Speaker 1: He was three times where we're waiting to hit because
- 55:05Speaker 1: they're just launching balls. All right, guys, get off. They're
- 55:08Speaker 1: having so much fun, like we're stretching next to you.
- 55:11Speaker 3: Guys liked it.
- 55:14Speaker 5: I wasn't launching.
- 55:15Speaker 4: I was I was old and sometimes didn't even hit
- 55:17Speaker 4: because I was sore. Loopers over seconds I get.
- 55:24Speaker 5: Out of here.
- 55:25Speaker 1: It was really yeah when Lester would really let it
- 55:27Speaker 1: loose and you were always letting.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Lester had juice.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he could hit the game here.
- 55:35Speaker 5: He was pretty good though he actually worked on it.
- 55:37Speaker 5: It was it was pretty good. And yeah, but that
- 55:39Speaker 5: home no man.
- 55:40Speaker 3: Well, so I tell the story a lot.
- 55:43Speaker 6: I don't remember the exact count, but he was pitching
- 55:46Speaker 6: me in like up and in, and I just happened
- 55:49Speaker 6: to I'm like he's coming up and then.
- 55:50Speaker 3: Again the heaters like heaters sold out for the angle
- 55:54Speaker 3: it's like, yeah, just sold out for the heater man
- 55:57Speaker 3: and your reaction in the dugout.
- 56:01Speaker 5: My favorite.
- 56:03Speaker 6: And I'm going around first base and I hit Hider's
- 56:07Speaker 6: hand because it was kind of a line line shot,
- 56:09Speaker 6: so I'm getting out of the box. I never knew
- 56:11Speaker 6: how to pimp a home run. I didn't hit that many,
- 56:13Speaker 6: but I wish I wish I could have, you know, I.
- 56:15Speaker 5: Wish I could have. There's a time to do it.
- 56:17Speaker 6: Stood there for a second and take a look and
- 56:19Speaker 6: then go. But Hyder hits my hand and almost spins
- 56:22Speaker 6: me around and almost fall down. But then I kind
- 56:25Speaker 6: of see you a little bit out of the corner
- 56:27Speaker 6: of my eye, and a Cubs fan actually caught it,
- 56:29Speaker 6: like the only Cubs fan.
- 56:30Speaker 3: That's sitting in that entire section, So that was pretty good.
- 56:33Speaker 6: Didn't get the ball, no, No, I mean I probably
- 56:36Speaker 6: wouldn't given it up if I was hamming either.
- 56:38Speaker 2: My story, I tell is the the old guy that's
- 56:41Speaker 2: always worrying when you hit that ball, are dugout, you
- 56:45Speaker 2: would have thought we won the World Series at.
- 56:47Speaker 5: That we did. We were on our way.
- 56:49Speaker 2: They were they were going ape shit up and down.
- 56:52Speaker 2: I'm like, oh god, come on, keep grinding, keep grinding, boy,
- 56:55Speaker 2: because it was like the third fourth inning early there
- 56:59Speaker 2: was second cat.
- 57:00Speaker 5: It was.
- 57:03Speaker 3: It was my first day.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Bro. The dugout was like so excited and like the
- 57:09Speaker 2: old school version of me was just going like they
- 57:12Speaker 2: calm down, stay focused, shut up.
- 57:14Speaker 5: Yeah, but it was we were right. We lost the game.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we did an extra well and usually was right.
- 57:20Speaker 6: I think the coolest part about it so so Bumgardner
- 57:23Speaker 6: at the time hadn't given up a run.
- 57:25Speaker 3: In the playoffs.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Bro. He was yeah, like six years or Yeah.
- 57:31Speaker 3: You couldn't believe it. I mean I couldn't really, no
- 57:33Speaker 3: one could.
- 57:34Speaker 5: Yeah, bro loud Bro.
- 57:36Speaker 1: That team who had to win. Bro. They were three
- 57:38Speaker 1: time World Series champions on that team, like they were
- 57:40Speaker 1: battle tested.
- 57:41Speaker 5: Yeah, Like the fact that.
- 57:43Speaker 1: We won in game four was like to come back.
- 57:46Speaker 1: The only weakness on that team was their bullpen, and
- 57:49Speaker 1: we exposed it, thank god, because we quato waiting in
- 57:53Speaker 1: game five if we had to go to game five,
- 57:55Speaker 1: which who knows on that, but that series set the
- 57:59Speaker 1: tone and then we got to go played the Dodgers,
- 58:00Speaker 1: who are always good.
- 58:02Speaker 3: The home run that Hobby hit was it off Quato, off.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Bomb, you pimped the fuck out of it in the basket.
- 58:09Speaker 1: In the basket beah, yeah, it barely went out, went out,
- 58:12Speaker 1: We went one nothing like. It's just like, but that's
- 58:16Speaker 1: what our team was.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Like.
- 58:17Speaker 1: I felt like our team was always we had so
- 58:19Speaker 1: much character and like swagger, like, but we never disrespected
- 58:24Speaker 1: the other team no, which is absolutely like.
- 58:27Speaker 2: I felt like our dugout was like a softball team.
- 58:29Speaker 2: We had like chance and cheers and ship, like we
- 58:31Speaker 2: talked about the hitters like remember when you get to
- 58:33Speaker 2: three two, we're like positativity on a base, on a base,
- 58:35Speaker 2: on base, like send good vibe.
- 58:37Speaker 5: Yeah, es.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Well, so we beat the Dodgers and clinching it's our
- 58:42Speaker 1: first time going to the World Series. Your guys is second,
- 58:46Speaker 1: your third, Like, where are you at emotionally like on
- 58:51Speaker 1: all of it? Well, so you're invested more. I feel
- 58:54Speaker 1: like in the Cubs being for longer.
- 58:57Speaker 6: But I think that because of the games that I
- 58:59Speaker 6: pitched previous, it didn't matter that it was the World
- 59:02Speaker 6: Series to me. I mean it did in the sense
- 59:04Speaker 6: of one hundred and eight years, everything that's on the line,
- 59:08Speaker 6: But for me, it's like I'm ready for this moment.
- 59:10Speaker 6: It's just another game for me, you know, and Hendrick's
- 59:13Speaker 6: pitch that game against Kershaw, Right, Oh yeah, game six.
- 59:18Speaker 6: I was supposed to pitch Game seven, and just being
- 59:23Speaker 6: able to celebrate and not having to play again because
- 59:25Speaker 6: then I knew that I got I would get.
- 59:27Speaker 3: To pitch because Lester was going to go in one one.
- 59:30Speaker 3: I was game two.
- 59:32Speaker 1: So not having to play that seventh game was huge
- 59:34Speaker 1: for us, especially in your own individual journey.
- 59:39Speaker 5: Well sure and.
- 59:40Speaker 6: Focused and then all of a sudden we were right
- 59:42Speaker 6: well and just I mean, the euphoria after winning that
- 59:45Speaker 6: game was just insane.
- 59:47Speaker 1: And did you guys feel that? Did you like because
- 59:49Speaker 1: the Wrigley euphoria, Because for me it was like I
- 59:53Speaker 1: was a little annoyed after just personally, like the Cubs
- 59:56Speaker 1: fans were celebrating, like we won the World Series, and
- 59:59Speaker 1: I was like my head, I was like, we didn't do.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Shiit sure, but you can see why.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Totally just getting totally I'm saying after like, looking back
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: a little bit, I was I remember in the moment
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: one of my goals, knowing it was my last year
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and the fact we were going to the World Series.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: I thought that was one step above where we went
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the year before war. So that's a bet, like you
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: just keep stacking, yeah, right, climbing the ladder. And I
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: felt like the year before we lost in this Championship series,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: So going to the World Series to me was like, oh,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: it's gravy now.
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: And also think about from that was my personal view
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: from a fans perspective, getting past the Dodgers and then
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: going to play Cleveland, No disrespective Cleveland, but beating them
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: was probably more of a challenge than having to be
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: think Cleveland, which you're thinking now turned out to be
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: more bet.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: And the Giants and Dodgers, right, they're both like road.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: The road to that Pennant was not easy, not at all,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: and then you're having to go West Coast multiple times too.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: It was just that that's another actor that doesn't get
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: really talked about at all. But then we run where
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: are you at? And that like you don't want to
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: finish second?
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: Bro?
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: You're fucking two times?
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: No, I mean, like like he said, like we were
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: both at a point in our career. I was trying
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: to enjoy everything a little bit more.
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: Like I didn't I knew I had at least one
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: more year brand you're getting towards the end of it,
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: and you know, you got your family, got kids involved.
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: Like just it's it's it was awesome to you know,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: to share those sort of things. It was it was cool.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Perspective is I mean, that's my perspective is when I
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: was still with the Yankees in twenty four, it was
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: like I told my parents that year, told Emily even later,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: I was like, enjoy this, Like I don't know what's
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: going on at this Like let's really enjoy this run. Yeah,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: we go to the world who's gonna win, But.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Like it's nice to get to that space in your
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: career too. They played long enough where you can like
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: you're not stressed by anythings, like we're just trying to win,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: but like, hey, let's let's take this all in.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: How many great players played for ten plus years never
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: played in the postseason A lot?
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I know, it's crazy.
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: So like it you know, you might like as good
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: as we were, you know, fifteen. It's like even though
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: the trajectory, like John was saying, looked like we were
- 1:02:10Speaker 6: going to go past that, you never know when you're
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: gonna get back, right, So like not being complacent but
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: also still allowing yourself to enjoy it.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: Yeah, fun.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: We did the parties Leicester, Ye dude, my dad playing
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the guitar with Eddie Vedder like four memories in his backyard,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: just partying like it's just like all the families were there.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: It's just so happy.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: And that moment, the story I tell is because I
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: was sitting with your dad and I was showing member.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: He got me the harmonica for a retirement gift, so
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: I'm showing him the chords I learned and was kind
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: of playing this thing for Uhrizz's dad, and then Eddie
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: walks in and grabs a guitar for me and starts playing.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: I'm like, I opened for Eddie better than that.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: I didn't get any freaking good, but those like throw
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: That's that's the best part about the run was the actors,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: celebrations of it and winning and the parties after we
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: went to country club. I think, yeah, a lot Lester's
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: backyard then obviously the big celebration, but.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: We're Lester did a good job. And this is like
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: side note, but Lefard did a good job, like David did.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Every time we won, he would throw a party and
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: everybody's invited. It doesn't matter we're going to bring food,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: where we have alcohol. We've got everybody's safety like cars,
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: like David Ortiz did that in Boston and it was
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: like such a like a cool thing, like I'm bringing
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: you know, friends and family to David Ortiz's house and
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: he's showing them their silver slowers. Like Leicester was like that,
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: everybody's invited.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: We're going to miss Chicago PD out. Yeah, you need
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: it right home, just like what we talked about, like
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: passing things down. He learned that from Bit and he
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: nailed it and we had a great time.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: When we go down three to one, what what what
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: gave you any belief, if anything at all that we
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: can do that?
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: Man, just come back. We were good, man.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: We had we had I knew we had enough enough
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: firepower and we had and we had dudes that could
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: that were coming up pitch and that that had been
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: there and done it. And at that point you can't
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: you just can't look too far ahead. You got to
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: win the next one. Just win the next one, get
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: to the next game, and we just all we had
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: to do just win the next one and then see
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: what happens after that.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: In the moment you said after the game I actually
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: got a quote because you're started to go well through
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: game four and you said, everything's fine, win tomorrow. Yeah,
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: everything's fine, win tomorrow. Right, And that's the veteran like
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: when you have this like he's not wallering on his
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: like it doesn't matter what I did. That's over. Yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: here we go on to the next well.
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: Because then we had Lester, myself and Hendricks, right, we
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: were lined up if.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: We won game five.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Because it was that was my favorite game.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Game five for me, it was our hardest one because
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: I knew we would roll in game six versus Timlin. Right, Yep,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: he shoved against us, but it was Tomlin. Sorry, he
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: shoved against us, but we didn't really we hadn't seen
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: him before, so like it was easier to register.
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: Was an overpowering dude.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Exactly heard of Klueber and it was like all right,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: and then we see Kluber for the third time, Like, yeah,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: I like our odds. Right, But that game five was
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: a gauntlet. I mean we won three two.
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: Well, for me, at no point did it feel like
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: we're down three one. No guys in the room, it
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: fell well, I mean maybe maybe for you.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Sure, I was selfish because I knew I got to
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: play Game five, so I was like, I can't wait
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: to start a World Series game in Wrigley. That was
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: my kind of incentive.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: On the hitting side, it was like it was it
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: was a ben Zeb's bunt in the NLCS that kind
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: of turned our entire offense around because we were grinding
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: in like the DS into this. I didn't really get
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: my I don't think I got I didn't get going
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: in that playoffs until like the third or fourth game
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: of the CS.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you started, you start to carry you and the
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: hobby started carry us in the CS, Addie too, and Addie,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I mean yeah, Addie.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: So we're you know, hitting is so hot and cold,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: and it's like we're down. We're down one nothing in
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: the fourth inning of Game five and it's like fuck
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Bowers on the mount, he's shoving, the wind's blowing in,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and then KB hits that Homer to tie it. It
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: was like all right, like yeah, and we relax and
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: then we somehow I think Chappie what it was an
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: eight out save? Who's at seven or eight out save
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: and felt like he came in game yeah, and the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: game six, you go out set the tone. We roll
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: quick I feel like you.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Shoved in the World series.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Bro Well, it was someone shove.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: I played with you, But like hold.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: Well, was it really the field contrast from game two
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: to six. Game two I remember being like in the
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: thirties or so.
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, well that's where it was. The game two
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: those freezing.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: So for me it was like, I just got to
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: keep this hand warm, and I knew if I could
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: do that, it'd be fine. Struggle with some grip issues
- 1:06:44Speaker 6: a little bit. In game six it was like sixty degrees.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: You were, you were two and up, you had two wins,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: you registered those two wins.
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but game two was rough.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Game two you were, you were good, But I remember
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: you were at a.
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: Very I think we have bases loaded at some point.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: I think it was Tyler and Naquin was at the plate.
- 1:07:02Speaker 6: Punched him out that.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Once I got through that, then then we were all right.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: I had a few walks. Was erradic, but when one
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: needed to make a big pitch, was able to.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: When it's cool, though, like I said, it's hard to
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: feel the ball.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: Hard to feel it.
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: Yeah, a little control can be an issue.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Ye. Yeah, you were cruising Game six. It felt like
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: you were in a rock and chair back, like you
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: know when you were locked in.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: You guys remember when again it's not about me, but
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: I hit the home run a little bit about you
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: a little bit late in the game, and uh Joe
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: kept Chappion for the night, and I remember the dugout
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: was like what the fuck are we doing? Like that's
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Travis would in the game, get him up because uh,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Chappie was like gassed right and we all knew it.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I just remember the dugout and it was like that
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: was the first time we the dugout kind of uproared,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: like Joe, we got to get this guy out of here,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: like get fucking bough.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Well, you hit your homework with two outs, and it
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: like I think it sped up real quick sometimes like
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: managing your like oh shit, I wasn't expecting that.
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: Yeah you got that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: It goes from four to six quick and you're like,
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: oh shit, I need to get somebody else up. There's
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: two outs. The next guy rolls over the first pitch,
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: you know, you're like kind of scrambling.
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: Yeah, we talked.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: We talked to Joe about that and he was like, yeah,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: he like looks back on that.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: What he was saying.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: He was like no.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: He was like it was it was fast. You got
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: to get to game seven all this stuff. But he
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: is so how he maneuvered that, like no one being
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: the manager of my opinion is the hardest thing because
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: no one, not everyone loves you.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: He's really accountable. But saying like I would either we
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: got to get to game seven kind of thing, and
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: then you know, obviously like Chapi out of gas and
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: all that. Like he he walked us through the whole
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: his thought process and what he was thinking, and then
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: you know, you pop that too out to run Homer.
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: It was kind of late. That mean I could get
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: pretty quick with you.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: So what so we go to game seven? What's your
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: your I know you were hot, like yeah, we made
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: stuff available.
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: Well I went, Yeah, I went into Joe's office pretty
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: early in the day and just wanted to make it
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: known like hey, I'm I've been warming up.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: Feel fine, I'm down there. You know you were down
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: I'm ready.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: Yeah, but I knew I was probably an extra inning
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: kind of guy.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: You know, we walked meet you and Lester us three
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: and Lester walked down to the bullpen together and like
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: the third or whatever, and I remember, do you guys,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: remember that. I remember walking Yeah, yeah, I was freaking.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: I think I was just security for you guys to
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: get when.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: I felt I felt like the guy because all you
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: guys are so big. I'm like walking down there, heart
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: rates going up. It's such a different view from the
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: bullpen or being in the dugout when you're trying to
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: like grind with the boys.
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: It's just at that point too, it's the last game
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: of the year. Like I whether I threw one hundred
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: of the night before, it doesn't matter, running off adrenaline.
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: It's for I'll give you what I got, everything that's
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: on the line, like counting year made me one out,
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: one inning, Yeah got you.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: When when Raj hits that home run, you guys are
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: down in the bullpen. We all are numb. We have
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: we have the rain delay. We're you guys are you
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: were down there?
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: You I came back and we think it went deep.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: I was thinking, I was thinking of things.
- 1:10:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I was just thinking at that point, like it's
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: a coin flip now, like you just you're not sure
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: which direction it's going.
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: To go because nobody expected that.
- 1:10:17Speaker 9: Nobody nobody expect there's so weird because the remember there's
- 1:10:21Speaker 9: there's like there's like fans in front of the bullpen
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: and behind you like we were like we were like
- 1:10:26Speaker 9: surrounded by Cleveland fans and they were.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: You just kind of give us the bird.
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: He just kind of like he was lacky is to
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: my left and we just kind of look at each
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: other like, oh fuck, where is this going?
- 1:10:41Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: I was catching it Yusually I can turn the page
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: really fast on the next I kept going yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: like man, like just negative.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Fact that Chap he got through the ninth inning though,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: such such balls.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: Yeah what he did? Another insane man?
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Then the raindo lag You said you were getting red.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: I was getting ready. I was kind of towards the
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: tail end of the speech.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: And then you were in the I was in there
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: and there what do you remember about that?
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: Man?
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: Obviously Jay get up and saying what he said. But
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: then I still thought there was a there was a
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: pretty good vibe with the boys. I mean, we we
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: didn't come this far just you know, to come this far,
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: were still we still had a great opportunity and and
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: I think the boys still believed.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Yeah coming out of that, coming out of there, Yeah,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: what were your thoughts Like during during that I would
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: always go to Bussy with everything. So I'm talking to
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Bussy Dexter and I had just re upped on our
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: five hour energy and would reserve cocktail Myers Speedball we
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: called it from Bill Murray, and uh, We're just like
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: no fucking way, like we're gonna fucking win this, like
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: just kind of like trying to psych ourselves out of
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: what just happened, because I remember when that happened looking
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: at our dog out getting a temperature of our guys
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: was like pale as a ghost. I remember even looking
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: at like THEO because he was kind of like in
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: our peripheral there off the dugout. He was like a ghost.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: So it was like getting through that ninth and getting
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: the reset was huge. And then obviously we all.
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: Come to reset's a good, great word.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: It was like we all come together like and and
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: and Jay Hay that gets something.
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: Guy that doesn't do a ton of.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Saying stuff, and he had people that people that don't talk.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: A lot, when they do say something, it means something sometimes.
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean he was always a guy that showed
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: up in the right moment to say the right thing.
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: He's one of the most pro guys I've ever ever
- 1:12:37Speaker 6: and not the most vocal guy, and we all know that,
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: but when something needs to be said to the group's paying,
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: he was the guy for the job he's paying.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Has got a really good feel for people in moments
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: and stuff like that.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: But I think to the fact that like that was
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: our team too, like we are so close. So the
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: fact that it almost happened organically that meeting, and then
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: he did call some guys in, but like we were
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: all there getting closer anyways too, and it just all
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: happened the right way. Dexter, he said it perfectly. He
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: was like at seventeen minute delay was the tiers of
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: all the fans, like one hundred and eight years of tears,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: just like, no, that's.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: Good, right, So that's pretty that's awesome.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: But coming out and then getting those hits and winning,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: it's like that celebration is is I've only done it once.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: I don't know if ever doing it again could match.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: The only bad part was it was in Cleveland. They
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: have such a small uh, it'd been better for it
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: to have been home Way, bigger clubhouse, to have a
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: good times, a great point and there's a million a
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: million reporters and stuff in there, like hell in there,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: they're trying to get in our way where we're trying
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: to you know, have some cold beers and stuff.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but like that the magnitude of us winning. Did
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: you your first year there, that's your second year, did
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: you guys think that that what you saw transpire afterwards
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: with Cups fans? Probably to this day you guys see
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Cups fans.
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: Well, for me, I didn't understand exactly how significant it
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: was until more time has passed.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: You guys experienced that to a little bit.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Droyd told me that we were partying in Boston and
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: we're sitting there and he's like, Ross, how you feels
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: like I don't feel anything. It's just like I'm happy.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: But he's like you won't for time has to pass,
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: and like saying like they that city treated me like
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: I was. You guys like have the backup catcher, you know,
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: and that like the carried.
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: You off the field.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Right. Well, it's not about me about me either, but
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: it's like that kind of stuff and the love you have.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: You're talking about the brothers for life, and like the
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: fact you go into restaurants and you get like standovations
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: and these things. It's like people are just so generous
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: with their love in that city. It's because of that.
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: Well, the stories right, like my great grandparents or grandparents,
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: it was their dying wish to see it, and they
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: passed away a month or two months later, like and
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: the stories continue to crazy.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: That's my favorite. When you run to fans in the
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Game seven story and then they started in on all that.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: That's my favorite part.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Was a baseball fan that year. The story of the
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: World Series was, you know, the Indians hadn't won in
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: like sixty something years. We hadn't want The fans were
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: actually like enjoyable the entire because they were so happy.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: It was not a big rivalry or anything. And the
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: fact that we came out on top and then hearing
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: all those stories is like, this is like we knew
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: it would be monumental. But then the parade five million people.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Was wow, that was nuts.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: You guys almost died. You were on that flow right
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: off my face.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: He was almost cut his head cut off.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: I was right behind him.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: We were with Lester and we had that that thing
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: hit It hit you across Remember the little the screen
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: that we walked through from the players parking garage too,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: so that netting they had a wire up top well
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: our the cameraman that was filming. It was like we
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: were on the very back, sitting on the top of
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: the bus and he's got this thing and his camera.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Nobody told us to duck. His camera hit that wire
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: and it like pulled and then it flew down and
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: that thing whipped all three of us. Lester, it missed Lester,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: hits you. You had a hat.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: I had sunglasses gone they were out on the street somewhere.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, hit me, almost ripped my not. I was like,
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: noses bleeding, get my hat a full on like whammy, right.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: It was like no skin on my nose. And I
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: think it hit Woody, missed Lester, but it hit Woody
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: too somewhere.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: It was shirtless and he was already three sheets. But yeah,
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: we went on that that parade. That wouldn't stop on us.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: We still partied. Just it's just hard in that getting
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: up on that stage. I got all the feels on
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: that stagehere. I could barely go so many five.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Million people, that's crazy. I look at videos all the time.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: It was just like people saying, I just remember people
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: like seeing like the sea of people and then the
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: tops of trees. You know what I mean. It was
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: like it was as far as you can possibly see.
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: My little daughter's been born. I was carrying my daughter
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: like it's cool.
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: But as we would continue to have blocked the block,
- 1:17:06Speaker 6: you just see the wave of people following us.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't even see the streets, right, incredible.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: When you guys look back on like the body of
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: work of your careers, where like from a leadership standpoint, right,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: we all have different styles. Where Like, what are you
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: guys proud of, Like looking back on that team, your
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: two team, you go in and play with the Phillies,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: everything you learned, you had bounced around a little bit
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: with San diego back to the Cubs, Like where what
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: are you most proud of looking back on ten years later?
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: I think I'm most proud of getting everything out of
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: my potential that I possibly could have. You know, it
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: took me a while to get going to kind of
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: hit my stride and figure things out, but I left
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: it all out there. And that's why when I get
- 1:17:51Speaker 6: asked like do I miss it?
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: I miss you guys.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: You know I do miss some of the competition, But
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: I did everything in my power to performed the best
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: that I possibly could.
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: So I think showing young guys and even even the
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: veteran players like, hey, when when I'm out there, they
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: know that I'm doing everything in my power to.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Help us win a baseball game every every fit day,
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: you know, for you definitely.
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: For twelve years, you know, and even when I wasn't
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: very good early in my career, I was still trying
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: to be you know, I just didn't I just really
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: hadn't really found my stride yet, you know, Black.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: I just really like, I think I got what I
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: could out of my out of my talent. I think
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: I I worked hard, I respected the game. Hopefully I
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: took care of people, you know, even outside the team,
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: like you know, the clubhouse guys and.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: People like that.
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: Hopefully you know, they say good things about me en up,
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: and hopefully when guys walked into the locker room they
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: saw my name on the lineup, they thought we had
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: a chance that day.
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: It's about it, well said, yeah.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: It's uh, And that's all that true.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: It's really two different career paths, honestly, because you are
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: we're a career path of like resilience of obviously. Well,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I had to face our adversities. But sure, like you
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: were close to like fringe, right, I add, there's a
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: lot of guys that are out there right now at
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: any level, any kid playing sports of like, man, am
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: I that good? Or I feel like I'm good, but
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: I can't figure it out? And it's like you did
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: figure it out, and you like figured it out to
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: the highest in a big, big way.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Well I was rusted yourself.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: Well, sure, sure, you know I did.
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: I had to do a lot of soul searching and
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: look in the mirror and conversations with with Brittany when
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: Cooper was this big and you know, close to get
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: being pregnant with Palmer, It's like do I want to
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: drag my family around minor league hotels?
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: Yeah, you know.
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: I was at a point in twenty twelve and.
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: Thirteen like I might go back to school and finish
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: my business degree, start a business, like those are real thought.
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: I was kind of at I was at that spot.
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: Bring I had a long conversation and she's like, you're
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: not done yet, and I felt that in my heart,
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: you know, but I was, you know, and and guys
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: go through that every year.
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: We said it difficult, said it sucks to suck. It
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: sucks to suck because there's so much on the line.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: I uh, well with you, you could. You were so
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: consistent for your entire career.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: But like you said, okay, I have to make a lot.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I relate to you because guys I played with, like
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: the superstars I played around, they were so much more
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: talented than me. I'd seen these dudes hitting bombs, and
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: like for me, I always thought like right here was
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: like the end, all be all right because everyone's talented.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: And then ROSSI you were you grinded for you know,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: you play everything a little bit.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, no, like you try to start and
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: you try to you want to do this. I became
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: better in Chicago, I mean in Atlanta. Back on, Brian
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: mccannon realized, like, man, I'm just gonna I love the
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: support staff role and like I want to play a lot,
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: but like I could, I couldn't handle a lot of
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: the mental side, Like I've let oh for twelves turn
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: into for twenty fours, you know what I mean, and
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: trying to hit four home runs in a bat. So
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: I'm very thankful for the teams I've been on the teammates,
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: the people that it affected me made me a better
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: person and teammate that affected me and winning teams, you know,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: and so getting to Boston and taking that to Chicago
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: and doing that with John and how he treated me
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: and all my things I've learned about what a big
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: leaguer is. I get to manage with no experience, Like
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: there's a lot of great shit that baseball has given
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: me and it's all because of my teammates and things
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: I've learned of just paying attention to Wow, this guy
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: makes me feel this way, you should treat people this way.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: Stuff like that, and trying to grind on the day
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: I played.
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: You were unbelievable and talking like kind of being where
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: those guys were, like you could talk to people, you
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: know where they were at, like you could you really
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: related to everyone.
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: Well.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: But I think the blessing looking back on being able
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: to do that because I had a bunch of different
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: roles I started for like a year and a half
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: I had. I've been in the backup. I know how
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: hard it is to pinch hit. I know what it's
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: like to suck a lot and have some success and
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: win and lose. So like being on that bounce around
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: a bunch of different teams. See good managers see bad managers,
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: is like, you know, you get perspective. Perspectives I think
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: is a powerful thing in our game. Even being a dad,
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: like you'll be able to teach Cooper and tell the kids,
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: like you're able to tell everybody, Oh no, no, I'm
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: doing my daughter right now. It's like no, no, no,
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: Like trust me, I know how hard it is mentally
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: to beat yourself up, but like you need to talk
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: good to yourself, you know, stuff like that, little little
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: things that change the game.
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: Well, and like with with ROSSI he's not having the
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: longevity of the career that he had without that sort
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: of character, right and and being that kind of.
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: A teammate right, Like that's extremely rare.
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: I've hit all of those too though, well sure sure,
- 1:22:46Speaker 6: but his ability to not say no, I should I
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: should be this this guy or that guy, like I am, oh,
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: I am sure, that's right, and I'm gonna be the
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: best at it, that's right, And you are You're.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: The best I can. Yeah, yeah, get the best out
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: to you out there in here. That's the other day.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: But as I, hey man, as I got older in
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: my career. It was like I enjoyed the cloudy days
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: more on the sunny days because like I would just
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: sit in my locker sometimes I'd laugh, like, dude, this
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: is so fucking hard. Yeah, but this is what makes
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: those sunny days so much better, no doubt. Right when
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: that sun comes out, it's a perfect day in Chicago
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: or New York. It's like, this is why you do it.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: And the struggle would really make me like embrace the
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: success more because I.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: Was like, but at the end of the day, you're
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: still one of the best undred players on the planet.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Yeah perspective, that's.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Like twelve or thirteen hundred guys a year to get
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: to play in the big leagues or whatever the number is.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but now one of them. Now I sit and
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: watch like the World Series or games with with people
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: or friends or family, and the guy takes one right
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: down the middle or fouls off heat right down the
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: They're like, why did he miss that? I'm like, easy, bro, easy, Yeah,
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: that's a lot easier.
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: I'm definitely not the one who says it to you.
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: I'm like, you guys are your I'm the same way, bro.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: I look, I'm like this is easier and not I go, no,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: let's know, way how they hit that?
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: No, yeah, they're better. Everybody throws a million.
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: Like when I first came up, there was like three
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: guys in the league that threw one hundred, right, every team,
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: that's three guys.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Ganye was like the guy and he's like ninety
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: six right now. Ninety six is a.
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: Starter and it had game over on the fence when
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: he came in.
- 1:24:23Speaker 6: Exactly on that note, I got a question for you
- 1:24:26Speaker 6: because you played played for a long time, and you
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: played when guys you saw some mid upper nineties, not
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: very many, but then towards the end of your career.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: Saw a lot of it.
- 1:24:37Speaker 6: How did you make those adjustments, like as a as
- 1:24:40Speaker 6: a hitting staff, how did you how did you guys
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: make those adjustments or was it just like you see
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: it more and it just well just hand eye coordination or.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: The league started turning in like seventeen eighteen, that's when, Yeah,
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: I started throwing a lot harder, right, but they didn't
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: know where it was going, so it would be hard
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: and down the middle. So it was like, all right,
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: you can gear up. They didn't have the secondary stuff yet,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: and then over the last six years, it was like,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: guys are not only throwing hard, but now they're doing
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: all this different pitch sequencing that like has been new,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: the upper the high fastballs that I think the Dodgers
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: started seventeen and it was like, all right, now we
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: gotta we gotta make that adjustment up top. So and
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: then the last few years it's like, dude, there's these
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: guys are all throwing one hundred miles an hour with
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: ninety three mile an hour sliders and change ups, and
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: it's and spotting it and spotting.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: And landing secondaries behind on the count. You're like, wait
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: a minute, two oh, there's no no sitch as a
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: fastball count anymore.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: So the preparation had to be you had to really
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: dive even harder into the prep. There wasn't the days
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: of two to oh fastballs were gone, right, They might
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: not see it fastball exactly, so you really had to
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: do your homework more. Actually, Shorter said this to me,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: which makes so much sense for him as a player.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: He was like, for him, he thinks hitting is a
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: lot simpler now because guys strow the ball down the
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: middle more, which is true. They don't hit their spots
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: as good as like you you relied.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: On you guys relying, and we came up.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: You had you had to power stuff, but like we
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: relied on your stuff right where He's like, guys, now
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: miss so down the middle and his eye is so good.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: He's like, I just swing it the stuff over the middle,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: which regardless of the pitch, regardless of the pitch. Yeah,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: And I'm like, well, for you, that makes sense because
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: you strike out a lot looking and like you have
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: such a good that's why he walks one hundred plus times.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: It was hard for me as a manager to start
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: buying into catcher setting up down middle because of the
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: way I was brought up in fastball command and on
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: the edges and stuff that when we were coming in so.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: Like we did that a lot, though.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: Yeah, we know because of my stuff, because your stuff,
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: because it went because it made.
- 1:26:46Speaker 6: No sense for me to have you set up on
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: the outside corner, inside corner and I missed this far off.
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: It's a ball. It's like, if my stuff's doing this,
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: take my chances.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Yeah, But the evolution of the game is evolution of
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: the game. Yeah, the numbers and the analytics and all
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: that is I think amazing if you know how to
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: use it the right way. It's great information. But like
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: anything in life, if you're oversaturated, then you're gonna be
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: you're gonna be spinning too much.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: Well, this is this is our this is our process
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: of like saying thanks to our teammates and having fun
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: and putting this in a in a series where we
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: get to tell all the stories. So it's been really fun.
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: So thank you for your time. Thank you for my ring,
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: my two rings. Wow, and why okay all of jewelry.

- 1:27:48Speaker 1: And seriously, without you, how much you both have taught me.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: I'd say ross all the time, but you have taught
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: me as a person, as a as a player, as
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a as a dad. Now I was like, I take
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: for the rest of my life.
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: So thank you awesome ultimate team game man, like you
