- 0:07On Sunday, October 24th, 1971, the Chicago Bears faced the Detroit Lions at Tiger Stadium for his week 6 of the 1971 NFL season.
- 0:17The Bears entered the game with a 3-2 record under head coach Jim Dooley.
- 0:21Detroit was 4-1 and were coached by Joe Schmidt, who led the team to a 10-4 record in 1970 and their first postseason game since their 1957 championship.
- 0:29This game has historical significance as it features the tragic death of Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes late in the fourth quarter.
- 0:36This audio recording is from the Detroit Radio broadcast featuring announcers Van Patrick and Bob Reynolds.
- 1:06So as we mentioned earlier, we expect to find ourselves in the middle of a real battle here today between these two ball clubs.
- 1:13Remember as we mentioned, the Bears are 3-2 still very much in contention. The Lions 4-1, seeking their fifth straight win here today.
- 1:21They have 6 in a row over the Chicago Bears over the past couple of seasons and they'd like to keep it going today.
- 1:28Man has it all set up. We're all set to go and ready to bring you all the action once again here in Van Patrick.
- 1:36Thank you Bob Reynolds and hello everybody. The defense are Cecil Turner along with Ron Smith and here's the boots.
- 1:42High end over end kick coming down to about the 3-yard line. It's taken there by Turner back to the 15, the 20, 25 to the 30.
- 1:50And he's dropped down on the 30-yard line. The tackle was made by Wayne Rasmussen.
- 1:54So it'll be first down and 10 to go for the Chicago Bears and that was a 27-yard return.
- 1:59The Bears have the ball, first and 10 on their own 30.
- 2:02Cody's the center, Cabeele all the way in the guard. Wright and Jackson the tackles and Gordon and Wallace to the end.
- 2:08Robert Douglas is the quarterback and he's a left-hander.
- 2:11Farmer's foot out wide to the right. Gordon is deployed to the left.
- 2:14They're in the I-formation now, the Chicago Bears.
- 2:17Out checked the Lions defense. Grabowski's in there as a running back and the give instead is Suzanne Shai the fullback.
- 2:24And he is to the 34-yard line and the tackle is made right there.
- 2:28Making the tackle was Mike Winger coming up for the secondary along with Dick Eadie, number 77.
- 2:33Lucci and Walker both the 16 and the ball on the 34.
- 2:36It'll be second down and six yards to go now for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:39Grabowski, Shai and Farmer in the backfield with Bobby Douglas.
- 2:43Lions have Mitchell E.V. rushing hand up front. Newbork, Lucci and Walker backing up the line.
- 2:48Bobby Williams is in there in the cornerback in place of Lynn Barney.
- 2:51It's a close set with two flackers and Douglas throws one out of the right flat.
- 2:55It's completed the Farmer but the tackle is made immediately by Bobby Williams.
- 3:00He might have moved it to the 36-yard line. We'll wait until they bring it in and mark it down.
- 3:05It'll swing fast out in the right flat and as I mentioned Bobby Douglas is a left-handed thrower.
- 3:11Number 89, number 45 coming in here. That's it.
- 3:14Gordon moving back in. He had gone out to the left side.
- 3:18And the big number 89 is Wallace, the tight end who was also on the left side.
- 3:22He's 6'3, 220.
- 3:24Now Gordon is deployed to the right side.
- 3:26It's then Farmer over on the left side in the dive formation with a third and four situation.
- 3:31Douglas with the football and the pitch back there to his running back Shai who cuts in.
- 3:35He's dropped at the 39-yard line. He's shy I believe of a first down.
- 3:40Tackle was made by Wayne Walker of the Detroit Lions.
- 3:44And also in on the tackle and giving up rather slowly there for Detroit is Jim Mitchell.
- 3:50So that brings up a fourth down and one so the defense did the job.
- 3:54Walker is hurt.
- 3:58Wayne Walker has a shoulder injury as he goes off the sideline and can't stop the trainer if it's enough.
- 4:04Bobby Joe Green, 5'11, 175 pounder is in there to do the punting.
- 4:10Dropping back for the Detroit Lions.
- 4:14Chuck Hughes is back there.
- 4:18Looks like Gibson also back there and it is.
- 4:20And here is the lead taken on the 27-yard line taken by Walton.
- 4:26And Walton is dropped on the 27-yard line.
- 4:30Dropped down on the 27th. He's a printer with a running on the tackle at the 34-yard pitch.
- 4:35They had Larry Walton back there that time with Chuck Hughes.
- 4:38Lynn Barney who usually works back there is out of the ballgame and probably will miss next week's game.
- 4:44Earl McCullough came out and has gone right back on the sidelines again.
- 4:50Paul Gibson has been moved on the taxi squad. Al Clark has been activated and so has Mel Farr.
- 4:56All right, ready to go. First down and 10 from the 26-yard line of Detroit.
- 5:00Greg Landry in the high formation with two receivers on the left side.
- 5:03Bruckus calling those defensive signals. A bit back is Alfie Taylor.
- 5:06Taylor gets a block. He's at the 25 and he finally knocks out of bounds on about the 27-yard line.
- 5:12And Jeter is the man who knocked him out of bounds. And I'll check that defense now to bear it.
- 5:17Willie Holman is playing left end. O'Gradovich is the right end.
- 5:20George Seals and Staley are the tacklers.
- 5:22And Brubacher are the linebackers. They've got Charlie Ford, Ron Smith, Jerry Moore, and Bob Jeter in that secondary for Chicago.
- 5:31So one yard on the play and out wide to the right goes Walton.
- 5:35To the left side is McCullough who's in there now.
- 5:37And in the pro set, Steve Owens and Alfie Taylor with the setbacks for Detroit.
- 5:42Greg Landry calling the signals. Look at Bruckus. He's moving around, stunning a little bit.
- 5:46Owens with the football. 35-yard line. He's got very close to the first down.
- 5:50He found the hole over the right side, Bob, with Clayton Gallagher clearing the way.
- 5:54It really looks like he was trying to there, man.
- 5:57After that, I've seen Steve move as you were mentioning Bruckus.
- 6:01I took my eye off the play, the running play, and was watching Dick.
- 6:04He keeps planning in a real go down. He keeps talking to him all the time.
- 6:08And Flanagan says every time he plays Chicago Bears, there's no problem for me to get up.
- 6:12He said I just can't anticipate meeting head on with Dick Bruckus.
- 6:17He's a little unorthodox, but he said he's all the great football player that everybody says he is.
- 6:22And indeed, he is just that.
- 6:25All right, third down and about a half a yard to go for the Lions.
- 6:28They have a tight formation with the exception of Walton who's set out about five yards to the right side.
- 6:32Steve Owens, the second leading rusher in the National Football League.
- 6:35Bruckus almost went across there.
- 6:37The game is through Owens, and he didn't make it, but there's a flag on the play.
- 6:41Bluebuckers, the man who made the tackle there.
- 6:45Bruckus started across, and then he jumped back.
- 6:48I don't know what the, I think it's going to be against the Bears to be offside Bob Early with the finger.
- 6:53That's it. It may be even longer than that.
- 6:55No, it's the five yarder.
- 6:58They're offside, as you call it, against the Bears, which lose the ball to the 41 and gives the Lions that first down.
- 7:03If they would not have had, they didn't make the yardage on the running play.
- 7:07But the penalty gives it to the first and 10 of their own 41.
- 7:10So in the opening moments of this one, no score, the Bears and the Lions.
- 7:15Greg Landry, the quarterback, he's completed 53 out of 101 this year.
- 7:20First to 10 from the Lions 41.
- 7:22Look at that defense starting around there.
- 7:24The Bears, they keep moving around.
- 7:26Landry's back to throw.
- 7:27He lets him throw.
- 7:28He's completed at the 45 yard line.
- 7:30He's at the 50 to 45, and he's out of bounds.
- 7:32And Jerry Wilde, chasing out of bounds.
- 7:34They've got another first down.
- 7:36And Landry hits Alty Taylor out on the right flat, and that's the second first down.
- 7:40Whoa, we've got some surprises on that scoreboard.
- 7:43Riverdale is leading New York 13 to 7.
- 7:45Atlanta is ahead of New Orleans 21 to nothing.
- 7:48Denver leads Cleveland 14 to nothing.
- 7:50Houston leading Pittsburgh 10 to 6, and the Jets leading Miami 7 to 3.
- 7:56Let it all in.
- 7:5915 yards made on that pass play.
- 8:01First and 10 now, the ball is on the 44 yard line of Chicago.
- 8:06Two setbacks, two flunkers.
- 8:10Owens with the ball, punching over right guard, and Owens gets down to about the 40.
- 8:15And I'm happy to have another round of tension there with working and planning.
- 8:20That's what I was just talking about, that two of them really have a great day.
- 8:24Every time they play against each other.
- 8:26And you know, then, planning it makes a lot of it, too.
- 8:30And Rutkus himself says that Burnigan does the best job as anybody in the league of flocking.
- 8:36This is really a confrontation between the center and it.
- 8:39Pretty bad, Burnigan's got his head down on every play.
- 8:42Rutkus playing almost nose to nose with him.
- 8:45It's second down and seven yards to go.
- 8:47Landry on the call.
- 8:49It's really stunning on that defense today.
- 8:51Here's Alty Taylor, 35, 30.
- 8:53He's gone to the 26 yard line before he's walked out.
- 8:57He's gone to hold over the right side and Smith made the tackle for Chicago.
- 9:02That's another first shot.
- 9:03That's not their man on that face.
- 9:04That's the one that Owens busted through for the yardage.
- 9:07And Taylor followed it beautifully.
- 9:13The ball is on the 26 yard line of Chicago.
- 9:17And Landry is doing an exceptional job of mixing up his play, Bob.
- 9:20Yes, he is.
- 9:23First and 10 from the bare 26 yard line.
- 9:27High formation now.
- 9:29Owens right through the middle.
- 9:31He's gone to the 18 yard line with that ball.
- 9:35Rutkus made the tackle, but not before Steve moved it down to the 18,
- 9:40getting about eight yards on the player.
- 9:42It'll be second down and two to go.
- 9:45Owens, second leading rusher in the conference.
- 9:50Ball is midway between the sideline strikes on the 18 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 9:55Second down and two to go.
- 9:58Walton to the right side.
- 9:59McCullough's in the slot to the right.
- 10:00Sanders is tied in on the left side.
- 10:02It's an high formation.
- 10:04Rutkus calling those defensive figures for Chicago and stunning around,
- 10:07moving around out there.
- 10:09And they go the other way and it's Owens at the 15, down to the 10.
- 10:12Owens down to the 7.
- 10:14First down, that's going.
- 10:16Lyle made the tackle.
- 10:17You know, one thing about Dick Baskin's man that we have watched over the years,
- 10:23he is a gambler.
- 10:24He likes to gamble.
- 10:25He likes to guess.
- 10:26And that time is a typical example of where the big guy gets wrong.
- 10:30He went to the outside and Landry sent the play to the other side.
- 10:35And Rutkus was out of position on it.
- 10:38They caught him looking the other way.
- 10:41Down to the 6 yard line.
- 10:43First down and goal to go.
- 10:4511 yards came down the play.
- 10:47Walton to the left side.
- 10:48McCullough to the right side.
- 10:50Landry really mixing up his plays in this drive, which started on the line in 26.
- 10:54Owens, he stopped at the 5.
- 10:56He's got a yard, that's all.
- 10:58And Rutkus again and on the tackle for Chicago along with Willie Holden,
- 11:02the defensive left in.
- 11:04And O'Bradyvich, who's been around longer than George Halleck.
- 11:08He's been this late 10 years, Ed O'Bradyvich.
- 11:16He takes mean bills too, that's what he does every day.
- 11:20Fine football player.
- 11:23The ball is just over the 6.
- 11:26Charlie Sanders on the right side, put out a few yards now.
- 11:29And Larry Walton is also outside on the right.
- 11:33Landry's back to throw.
- 11:35He's left throw incomplete.
- 11:38He threw it to Sanders in the end zone, but it's incomplete.
- 11:42He almost made up his mind to run.
- 11:44Smith got a hand on the ball and knocked it right out of Sanders' hands, Bob.
- 11:48Yes, and he threw that thing like a bullet too.
- 11:50I don't think Charlie had much of a chance on it.
- 11:53Landry, as you mentioned, could have run.
- 11:55He had some room there.
- 11:56He could have got inside the vibe on it.
- 11:58But as he said before the season started this year,
- 12:00that he was going to run only when he felt that he had a real great opportunity.
- 12:04He would run around, but he's still going to look for those pass receivers
- 12:07and try to get the ball to them.
- 12:10Here's that big third down now.
- 12:12Let's see what he does now.
- 12:14He might try it wide with Taylor on the pitch.
- 12:16Let's see.
- 12:17Or he might, it's third down, remember, and the ball is on about the 6-yard line.
- 12:22And Landry now is going back to throw.
- 12:24He gets some time.
- 12:25He throws it clean, caught out there by Owens,
- 12:28but a flag is down holding against Detroit.
- 12:31Now that's something that the Lions would like to have avoided, certainly, right there,
- 12:37although he didn't pick up enough for the first down,
- 12:39but the holding penalty will set them back.
- 12:41It'll still be third down and goal to go.
- 12:44But instead of being down there inside the 5,
- 12:46that ball will be moved out somewhere up around the neighborhood of the 20-yard line.
- 12:5621, actually the 20 with the new statistical rule that they have in the National Football League.
- 13:04The ball is over the 21-yard going the other way as the Lions are,
- 13:09why they will officially call it 20 yards.
- 13:12Owens is out of there and Mel Farr is in now,
- 13:15making his first appearance after being activated just the other day.
- 13:19So the down is the third.
- 13:21It is goal to go, and the ball, that's the 20.
- 13:23But of course, getting far in there, Bob, not only gives you a running threat,
- 13:26but he's also a fine pass receiver.
- 13:29And Triplett is in there now at the pullback spot.
- 13:34Mel Farr has been activated and can be utilized today and will be.
- 13:38That goes long to throw.
- 13:40He throws over the middle and it's in.
- 13:42It's knocked down, almost unexpected.
- 13:44He had a hand on the ball and almost intercepted it.
- 13:48So that brings in the field goal unit for Detroit.
- 13:51That 15-yard penalty moves the ball back to the 21-yard line.
- 13:55And so the Lions have Errol Mann in now to attempt.
- 13:59What's he done so far, Bob?
- 14:01Man will attempt this one from about the 28-yard line,
- 14:11and last month he was a hole.
- 14:13He's 8 out of 14.
- 14:158 out of 14 for Errol Mann.
- 14:17It's an angle at the hash mark off to the left.
- 14:23The ball is started, the kick is up, and the kick is good.
- 14:27Throw it to 28-yard field goal, and the clock is just stopped on the field
- 14:31with a score.
- 14:32Detroit 3, Chicago nothing.
- 14:34It's just hard to believe that ball came between Denver and Cleveland
- 14:37being played in Cleveland at 24-0 now.
- 14:40Denver leading Cleveland.
- 14:4228-yard field goal by Errol Mann, the Lions lead at 3-0.
- 14:48Deep man Art Turner along with Ron Smith.
- 14:51There's the whistle, here's the booze by man.
- 14:53High end overhand kick.
- 14:55Swimming down to Smith at the 2, he's back to the 5,
- 14:58at the 10, he goes to the 15, 20, 25, 30,
- 15:02and he's finally hauled down by Charlie Weaver
- 15:04after a brilliant run back of 41 yards.
- 15:08So, Weaver finally got him from behind to get him down.
- 15:12Put that ball on the 41-yard line and make it first down
- 15:15and tend to go for the Chicago Bears who have good field positions.
- 15:19And Bobby Douglas, the quarterback, left-handed thrower.
- 15:23Dick Gordon has 25 receptions for 345 yards to lead the league.
- 15:28Farmers flank to the right side, Gordon to the left.
- 15:31They're in a pro set now.
- 15:32Guy and Grabowski are the setbacks.
- 15:34Bobby Douglas waiting for it, and Douglas is going back to throw again.
- 15:37He looks, he throws, and this one is caught at the 45-yard line
- 15:41in front of Bobby Williams by Farmer.
- 15:43It'll be a first down for the Bears, and they have the rush on all right,
- 15:47but Douglas got rid of the ball.
- 15:51That run back on the kickoff up to the 41-yard line
- 15:54just emphasizes the importance of the specialty teams here in professional football.
- 15:59It gave the Bears good field position.
- 16:02Joe Smith was quoted this week as saying that the specialty teams
- 16:05are so vitally important that sometimes they can win
- 16:08three or four ball games a season for you by giving you good field position
- 16:11by running kickoffs back.
- 16:13They're very important.
- 16:1415 yards gained on that play.
- 16:16The fast farmer to the right side, Gordon to the left side.
- 16:19The pro set, Grabowski with the football, and he is down to the 41-yard line.
- 16:24Four yards.
- 16:25Raleigh Hand made the tackle for Detroit along with Mike Luchy.
- 16:30Check those linebackers out there.
- 16:32Walker went out of there with an injured shoulder, but he's back in there again.
- 16:35Ball is on the 41-yard line.
- 16:37It will be second down and about seven.
- 16:42Miami's leading the Jets now 10 to 7.
- 16:44Houston over Pittsburgh 10 to 6.
- 16:46Philadelphia leading New York 13 to 7.
- 16:49Gorse, the only flanker, is put out to the right.
- 16:51Now they're putting Farmer.
- 16:53Well, they're changing around the tight end wallets,
- 16:56moving over on the right side with a second down and about seven.
- 16:59They're in the high formation.
- 17:00It's shy with the football, good running room, and he's at the 35-yard line with it.
- 17:04Tackle is made by Newbaum at the 35-yard line.
- 17:08He's very close to the first down.
- 17:09Mike Luchy was also in on the tackle.
- 17:12And Wallace is going out.
- 17:13They're going to bring the chain in for a measurement, Robert.
- 17:17Looks from up here, let's take a guess.
- 17:19Man, he'll be about a half an inch short.
- 17:26Douglas standing right over the official shoulder.
- 17:29Right, Robert, I think it's an inch, just about an inch.
- 17:34Now coming in here for the Chicago Bears.
- 17:39Gray Ogden is coming in.
- 17:41He's from Alabama, seven years in the league.
- 17:45And he's coming in there in place of Farmer.
- 17:53Gordon is set out to the right side, doing an high formation,
- 17:56a tight formation with the exception of Gordon.
- 17:58And the pro set with Grabowski and Chai.
- 18:01Bobby Douglas in the third down, and they make contact out there.
- 18:05Lions look like they might have jumped offside.
- 18:07Let's see if they drew them off.
- 18:12The play is right on the 35-yard line.
- 18:14It was against Detroit, of course.
- 18:15It'll get them a first down.
- 18:18And the officials will walk it off against Detroit.
- 18:20They've got two costly penalties here in this first quarter.
- 18:23With five minutes and 16 seconds to go in the first quarter,
- 18:26three to nothing to point.
- 18:28The ball is moved down to the 30-yard line,
- 18:30where it's first down for the Chicago Bears.
- 18:32This is what Joe was talking about then this week, too.
- 18:35And he said, you know, we can't keep making these mistakes
- 18:37as we made in the Houston game, and the week before that,
- 18:40and the week before that, and continue to win.
- 18:43You've got to cut down on them.
- 18:44They hurt you.
- 18:46One-on-one over here, Farmer and Bobby Williams,
- 18:49although Mike Wigger is dropping off and having a look over there.
- 18:52And Douglas back throws, and it is completed.
- 18:55At the 23-yard line, out of bounds on the 21 goes Farmer.
- 18:59And they're picking on Bobby Williams over there,
- 19:01the cornerback in place there for Lynn Barney.
- 19:04Douglas is an interesting story.
- 19:06He's a youngster from Kansas who's only in his third season.
- 19:10And he threw four left-handed touchdown passes
- 19:12against Buffalo last November, his third,
- 19:14and has developed his final appearance of the season
- 19:18because very early in the game he had a fractured wrist
- 19:21and actually threw three of those four touchdowns
- 19:23with the fractured wrist.
- 19:24He didn't play after that.
- 19:26Farmer's caught three passes for 26 yards.
- 19:29He's on the right side, Gordon on the left side,
- 19:31the ball on the 21, and it's a shy 15-10-5 touchdown,
- 19:36Chicago.
- 19:38Down shy, just whipped right through there,
- 19:41and scored for Chicago, and the Bears are leading.
- 19:4559 yards in five plays.
- 19:47He went 21 yards on the touchdown runoff right back on.
- 19:54Oh, he was.
- 19:5621 yards.
- 19:57He's 6'1", a five-year man from San Diego State.
- 20:00Don's shy.
- 20:01Now we'll have the crowd support Matt Percival.
- 20:05He'll attempt the extra point Bobby Douglas will hold.
- 20:08The Bears are out in front, 6-3.
- 20:11So they came right back.
- 20:155-0-4 to go in the first quarter.
- 20:19Kick is up and good.
- 20:22The practice stopped on the field with a score,
- 20:24Chicago 7-3, on the touchdown of Don Shy.
- 20:30Percival moves forward.
- 20:32Here's the kick high and overhand kick going back forward
- 20:35is Jesse, and it goes out of the end zone.
- 20:38It'll be brought back out the 20-yard line in play there,
- 20:41first down and 10 to go.
- 20:42Both the Detroit Lions are on the short end
- 20:45of a 7-3 score to the Chicago Bears.
- 20:48They almost throw the odds right out the window
- 20:50every time these two clubs get together.
- 20:52Atlanta is still leading New Orleans 21-3.
- 20:55He had Denver ahead of Cleveland 24 to nothing.
- 21:07First and 10 Detroit from their own 20-yard line.
- 21:10Landry sends McCullough to the left,
- 21:11Walton to the right, Taylor and Owens to the setbacks.
- 21:15And here's they get to Owens.
- 21:17And Owens gets to about the 22-yard line
- 21:19and Bucks has pulled him back.
- 21:22Lubach here was also in there on the tackle.
- 21:28It'll be a gain of a couple of yards,
- 21:29second down coming up.
- 21:32Also in there was George Seale,
- 21:34defensive tackle from Missouri.
- 21:36Second and eight for Detroit from their own 22-yard line.
- 21:39The Lions break out of it with McCullough to the left,
- 21:41Walton to the right, Charlie Sanders on the right side.
- 21:44Throw set, Taylor and Owens,
- 21:46Greg Landry calling the fixers.
- 21:48But this is stationary this time.
- 21:50He is moving in motion now.
- 21:52It goes out to Taylor.
- 21:53And back goes Landry to throw.
- 21:55Stays in the pocket, looks, throws to McCullough,
- 21:57and he's whipped down.
- 21:59McCullough's whipped down on the 45-yard line.
- 22:03Bucks is down at the 10-yard line.
- 22:06It'll be a personal foul,
- 22:09against the Chicago Bears down there,
- 22:11one of the Bears a little overly aggressive with an elbow.
- 22:15Number 57 down there.
- 22:1957, or who is it?
- 22:20I can't see from here.
- 22:21The last man there talking up, George Seale.
- 22:25Throw a little elbow at the number 67.
- 22:27That's right, it's Seale.
- 22:29Who threw an elbow at Landry after he got rid of the ball.
- 22:32So of course the Lions will pick up the first down on the penalty.
- 22:35To the 37-yard line, where they'll have it first and 10.
- 22:38We've got 414 remaining here in the first quarter.
- 22:407 of 3, Chicago.
- 22:42McCullough, whoops, he was open,
- 22:45and he would have caught the ball, but he slipped, fell.
- 22:48First and 10 from the 37.
- 22:49Taylor in motion again.
- 22:51Moving to the left side, and back goes Landry.
- 22:53Throws over to the middle.
- 22:54Sanders at the 15-yard line.
- 22:55He's got down on the 43-yard line.
- 22:57Charlie Sanders, catching the reception, and forward.
- 23:00Make the pass.
- 23:01Charlie Ford from Houston, a rookie.
- 23:03At 6, first down, 44.
- 23:05They have it on the bare 43, so the Lions are coming right back.
- 23:08With 3.58 to go in the first quarter, and they're down by 4, 73.
- 23:13Flanagan at the center.
- 23:15Mccullough and Gallagher, the guards.
- 23:16Freitas and Yarborough, the tackle.
- 23:1820 yards on that play.
- 23:20McCullough and Sanders, the ends.
- 23:22It's all on the 43-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 23:25McCullough to the right side.
- 23:26Larry Walton deployed to the left, and Sanders on the left.
- 23:29Taylor and Owens, right back at the quarterback, Greg Landry.
- 23:32Three and a half minutes to play in the first quarter.
- 23:37Landry on a give to Owens, the tap up the middle, and he's down to the 37-yard line.
- 23:42With it brought down by Butchers.
- 23:44Let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 23:46This is the Detroit Lions football network.
- 23:48Brad Patrick, along with Bob Reynolds at Tiger Stadium.
- 23:52Owens in seven carries has gained 41 yards today.
- 23:55Walton to the left side.
- 23:57McCullough to the right, second and fourth.
- 23:59He's got six on that carry.
- 24:00And Landry now on a pitch to Taylor, trying to go wide, runs into a lot of traffic.
- 24:05He's down on the 41-yard line, number 63 there.
- 24:08Walton just couldn't clear him out.
- 24:10Grubacher made the tackle along with Jeter.
- 24:13So the ball is back on the 41.
- 24:14The series originated on the 43, so it's third and eight.
- 24:18And an almost obvious passing situation now for young Greg Landry.
- 24:22And coming in defensively, the Dooley shift, as they call it, in Chicago.
- 24:26He started putting in those extra defensive pats.
- 24:30And he's in.
- 24:35Yard is coming in there, making McGee out.
- 24:42McCullough to the left, Walton to the right, third down, eight.
- 24:46Landry with a long cadence count, and Landry is going back to bro.
- 24:49Bates in the pocket, gets the time.
- 24:51Finally runs out of it, but he's going to be dropped back on the 42-yard line by Willie Holden.
- 24:56You can just hold it so long, and you get in trouble.
- 24:58The Bears have the prevent defense on against Pats.
- 25:01And of course, they had only four minutes on everybody covering them.
- 25:04They knew that Landry was going to go to the air on it.
- 25:06He just couldn't get anybody loose.
- 25:08So he got trapped back there at the 42-yard line.
- 25:12And Earl Mann is in now.
- 25:13He'll put this one from the neighborhood of the midfield marker.
- 25:18And there's not much of a factor, though, I think, what there is, man.
- 25:21He's got a little bit at his back here.
- 25:23Well, I suppose if you call it a 49-yard attempt,
- 25:27grass muck will hold.
- 25:28That serves the purpose of the front if he doesn't get it in there.
- 25:31Bears drop a man back, Turner.
- 25:34The kick by Earl Mann.
- 25:36He's got the distance all right, and it's good.
- 25:3829-yard field goal by Earl Mann.
- 25:44It's 1 o'clock to stop on the field to score.
- 25:48Chicago 7 to Drake 6.
- 25:49Earl Mann, who just booted the field goal,
- 25:51sets the ball up on the 40 and is all set.
- 25:55Turner and Smith are the deep men for Chicago.
- 25:57Here's the whistle.
- 25:58Here's the boot by Mann.
- 25:59Good high and overhand kick.
- 26:01Down to the 2-yard line.
- 26:02It's taken by Smith to the 5, 10, 15, goes to the 20.
- 26:07And he has walked down on the 26-yard line.
- 26:09And Drake's gotten his man.
- 26:11Nicky Zopko made a dive for him back on the 15, Bob,
- 26:14and almost got him back there.
- 26:1524-yard return.
- 26:16The ball is on the 26-yard line.
- 26:18The man is 6'1", 28'1", 49.
- 26:21But the Lions are still on the short end of the 7 to 6 score.
- 26:24Dallas leading New England 10 to nothing in the first quarter.
- 26:27Now we'll see now whether Lions defense can shore up a little bit on those running plays.
- 26:32Gordon and Farmer are flanked.
- 26:35Gordon to the right side.
- 26:37Shy and Drabowski the setbacks.
- 26:39And here's Douglas going to give the shy.
- 26:41And Shy gets about a yard or two.
- 26:43And that's all trying the left side.
- 26:45Mike Lucey and Wayne Walker and Jim Mitchell and Jerry Rush all in there to make the tackle for Detroit.
- 26:51And they'll mark that ball on the 27.
- 26:53He got exactly 1 yard on the play.
- 26:56Coming in now is Carl Thomas replacing Bob Wallace at the tight end for Chicago.
- 27:03Bobby Williams over there.
- 27:05His job on the left side.
- 27:06And he keeps covering the man over there on the right side of Chicago.
- 27:10And it's Farmer over there now.
- 27:12And Weager dropping off a little bit to keep an eye on him also.
- 27:15And it's one-on-one LeBeau over there with Gordon to give us the shy breakthrough.
- 27:19He's at the 35.
- 27:20He's up to the 39-yard line.
- 27:23And they had him stop back there on the line of scrimmage.
- 27:25Evey and Newmont had him, but he broke through and picked up a first down on the 39-yard line.
- 27:30Now on the touchdown run of Shy, there was some shy tackling and there was some more right there.
- 27:35Once you have them contained, you better hang on to them.
- 27:38Big play there for the Bears who move with a first down to their own 39-yard line.
- 27:42Just a matter of one second left here at the end of the quarter.
- 27:45That's it.
- 27:46That's the end of the first quarter and the score.
- 27:48Chicago 7, Detroit 6.
- 27:51And it's completed out there at the 45 to Shy.
- 27:54And Shy is hit at the 45 by Wayne Walker and brought down on the 45-yard line.
- 28:00But he's got 6 yards on the play.
- 28:02Second down and 4 to go for Chicago.
- 28:05Jerry Rush was also in on the tackle.
- 28:07The way out is in there now.
- 28:32And the first down, the racing farmer, Gordon on the right side, the I-formation.
- 28:38Second down and about 4 yards to go.
- 28:40Now in the pro set, Bobby Douglas running the ball.
- 28:43Club Belong including the linebackers almost on the line of scrimmage.
- 28:45Shy with the football and he is hit at the 45.
- 28:49Trying to go off right tackle and Paul Newmont on the tackle with Mike Lucey.
- 28:53And on the bottom of the fire Jim Mitchell.
- 28:55So they'll mark that ball just over the 45-yard line, which brings up a third down.
- 29:00Now farmers coming back in and Hodgkin goes out.
- 29:03Bears are leading.
- 29:04San Francisco and St. Louis have nothing, nothing at the end of one.
- 29:08In that first period the Lions got 6 first downs.
- 29:10The Bears 4.
- 29:11Rushing, the Lions 52 and the Bears 50.
- 29:14And so the statistics are indicative of the closest to the score, 7 to 6.
- 29:19Shy of 6 carries has gained 47 yards.
- 29:23Pro set, two flankers.
- 29:24Third down, about 3, 3 and a half to go.
- 29:26Douglas on the call.
- 29:28Big play for him right here.
- 29:29He's going back to throw.
- 29:31Bears in that pocket.
- 29:32Let's go.
- 29:33Young B down.
- 29:34Look out.
- 29:35Third, 25, 25, 25.
- 29:36Farmers touchdown.
- 29:38Chicago.
- 29:39They got behind Bobby Williams over there.
- 29:42And he pulled that hamstring again.
- 29:44Williams did around the 15-yard line.
- 29:46He was limping.
- 29:47Beautifully thrown fast.
- 29:49Right on the money.
- 29:51To George Farmer.
- 29:53He's got to throw 74 and 5 and pick up the touchdown on the 45-yard fast play.
- 29:59There wasn't much Williams could do after Farmer got behind him.
- 30:03He's still bothered by that pull hamstring and the pass was right where it should have been.
- 30:09And so the Bears now have gone out in front.
- 30:1313 to 6 that are about to make it 14 on Percival's BAT.
- 30:20He really was open.
- 30:22Ball is spun.
- 30:23Kick is up and the pitch is good.
- 30:25The clock is stopped on the field with a score.
- 30:27Chicago 14, Detroit 6.
- 30:30Farmer with that catch now has caught four for 71 and the touchdown.
- 30:35And Douglas has done an exceptionally fine job.
- 30:39He is 5 for 5 for 80 yards.
- 30:44Deeth Jesse along with Al Clark and here's Percival's kick.
- 30:48High end over end kick and Jesse waits for it.
- 30:50He's got the heart, makes it in the end zone.
- 30:52He comes back to the 5, goes to the 10.
- 30:54Let's have a block at the 15.
- 30:56He's to the 40, the 45, the 30, the 35.
- 30:58He's at the 40, the 45, the 50, the 45, the 40, the 45, the 30, the 45, the 30, the 25.
- 31:0220, 15, win 5, touchdown!
- 31:05102 yards.
- 31:27Officially 102 yards as we call.
- 31:39Ron Chucky electrified this crowd and they're all standing at 5 or 6.
- 31:44That was something.
- 31:46And how the blocking formed for him over there.
- 31:49He made one good move at his own 35 yard line.
- 31:52And then picking up the blocking was gone.
- 31:55And now you see why this young man is the leading front return, kickoff return in the lead.
- 32:01Well, man, this kick is good.
- 32:03Brought the stop for the score, Chicago 14, Detroit 13.
- 32:11That was Jesse's seventh kickoff return for 297 yards.
- 32:16Here's the big bye man.
- 32:17It's a high end over end kick but short.
- 32:19Down on the 7.
- 32:20It's taken over there by Turner at the 15, 20, 25.
- 32:24He is fifth drop.
- 32:26Every week there's a 26 yard line.
- 32:29Bill Crippett is the captain of this specialty team and Bill Crippett made the tackle.
- 32:33Incidentally, there are eight clubs in the National Football Conference that have special team captains.
- 32:39Only two, however, in the American Football Conference.
- 32:42We mentioned Lem Barney is absent today.
- 32:44He's resting at home and I hope certainly he's enjoying the ball game.
- 32:48Lem, we hope you'll be back with us again real soon.
- 32:53Incidentally, missing only his third game, man, in his entire career.
- 32:57He's a great football player and a great individual.
- 33:00Pender is in there now fullback for Chicago.
- 33:03Two flankers waiting for it now as the quarterback Bobby Douglas.
- 33:07He's back to throw.
- 33:08Bill going back and batted down by Jim Mitchell.
- 33:12Mitchell moved three down, batted that ball down.
- 33:15That little pressure on Douglas Uptown.
- 33:17San Francisco leads St. Louis leading up into the second quarter.
- 33:29Al Clark has replaced Bobby Williams over there because Williams has a full drawing muscle.
- 33:35He just couldn't run at all a while ago on that touchdown that the Bears picked up.
- 33:40So Al Clark is in there, youngster from Eastern Michigan.
- 33:43He's at the cornerback.
- 33:45You can imagine he's got a few butterflies.
- 33:48Heading forward is Bobby Douglas.
- 33:50Douglas on a give, not a pender.
- 33:52Pender ripping off white tackle.
- 33:54It drops on the 30-yard line.
- 33:57Mike Lucey hitting first.
- 33:59Then Jerry Rush, the bottom of the pile, Jim Mitchell.
- 34:02So the series originating on the 26th, the ball is on the 30th, so that means third down, six Bears leading 14 to 13 with 11.58 to play in the first half.
- 34:13You know, Van, that kickoff return of Jesse is his seventh for 297.
- 34:17Gives him an average of 49 every time that he's carried the ball on a kickoff return.
- 34:22Two touchdowns.
- 34:23He's number one in the league, and Gibson of the Lions is number two.
- 34:28Third down.
- 34:29Here's the process with the two-plackers.
- 34:31Bobby Douglas with a passing situation confronting him.
- 34:34Looks over the defense.
- 34:35Now he's going back to throw.
- 34:36He throws a swing pass out in the left flap.
- 34:38It's completed for a left.
- 34:41Bobby Vaughn made the top-along throw tender back on the 27-yard line.
- 34:46And it's four to nine.
- 34:53That kickoff return was only two yards short of the all-time Lions kickoff return record held by Terry Barr.
- 35:00I was just going to guess.
- 35:02Yeah, fine.
- 35:03And let me tell you something, I would have been wrong.
- 35:06I was thinking about Bob Smith.
- 35:11Terry Barr and Gene Getman.
- 35:13I would have been wrong.
- 35:16Quick formation now.
- 35:17Bobby Joe Green is back there.
- 35:20Chuck Hughes is back here along with Larry Walton in the safety position, and they get it away.
- 35:25High foul.
- 35:26Fair catch is called for by Larry Walton on the 32-yard line.
- 35:30The Lions have the football first and 10 after that 41-yard kick from their own 32.
- 35:35Dallas leads New England 10-7 in the first quarter.
- 35:38Philadelphia ahead of New York 13-7.
- 35:40San Francisco prevailing over St. Louis 3-0.
- 35:43In the third quarter, Miami leads the Jets 13-7.
- 35:46Houston over Pittsburgh 10-6.
- 35:48Last night, San Diego beat Buffalo 20-3.
- 35:52Got a dandy coming up tomorrow night, too, man.
- 35:54And that Baltimore Vittorio.
- 35:55What a cruncher that'll be.
- 35:57Great football game that'll be.
- 35:58You won't be rooting for Baltimore, will you?
- 36:01I'd like to see him do it, you know.
- 36:03Simply because they're a moral picture, right, guys?
- 36:05With a standing for central division, I'd love to do it with you.
- 36:08Oh, my golly, that's right.
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:10Yeah.
- 36:11Well, we've got a timeout down there.
- 36:14The ball at the 32-yard line.
- 36:15When we get playing again, the Lions will have it.
- 36:18First down and 10.
- 36:20We've got 10-39 remaining here in the first half of this ballgame with the Lions failing by 1-14 to 13 in the typical Lions-vera football game.
- 36:31Lions, incidentally, speaking of Monday night, will be next in action a week from tomorrow night at Milwaukee.
- 36:38And that, too, ought to be something as we meet the Green Bay Packers up there on Monday night.
- 36:44Right ball, first and 10 on the 32-yard line of Detroit.
- 36:47Two planters, two setbacks, Taylor Nolan.
- 36:50Red Landry, the quarterback, calling the signals.
- 36:52And Landry ought to give the horns on through the middle.
- 36:54Gets only yard or two and brought down right up the middle.
- 36:57The tackle is made by Dunlop-Om, the linebacker of the Chicago Bears.
- 37:03So mark the ball on the 33-yard line.
- 37:05George Fields also on the tackle.
- 37:07And the ball is marked on the 33.
- 37:09The only yard gained by Steve in the second down.
- 37:12And nine to go for the Detroit Lions who are trailing the Chicago Bears 14 to 13.
- 37:18Walton and McCullough are both on the left side.
- 37:20The Lions are lining up in an eye formation now.
- 37:23Charlie Sanders on the right side.
- 37:25Greg Landry calling the signal.
- 37:27Landry breaks the ball, keeps it himself.
- 37:30Makes it to Owens and keeps it himself and goes through the 37 on the keeper.
- 37:34And Gary Lyle made the tackle for the Chicago Bears at that point.
- 37:38I think now, yet, Taylor trailing him around the left side,
- 37:41that he might have intended to cross it to Taylor,
- 37:44but then he thought it was a little dangerous.
- 37:46One of those defensive backs coming up to cover.
- 37:48It's an option play for Greg.
- 37:50He can take a quick look and do whichever he wants on it.
- 37:53He can pitch it out or keep it himself.
- 37:55He thought he'd spot a little running room until he kept it,
- 37:58but just slowed him up, grabbed him by the sleeve and slowed him up.
- 38:01And then the tackle was made secure by Gary Lyle.
- 38:05It's all on the 38-yard line.
- 38:07It's third down and four.
- 38:09Walton to the right side.
- 38:10McCullough to the left side.
- 38:11The pros set.
- 38:12But just standing in the middle of that line again.
- 38:14That goes Landry staying in the pocket.
- 38:16He left, he throws to Walton at the 42.
- 38:18He's out of bounds.
- 38:20On the 37-yard line, first down, McCroy.
- 38:23On the barrel, 37.
- 38:25Lyley Walton making the reception.
- 38:27That's great protection for Greg Landry, Bob.
- 38:29Indeed.
- 38:30And of course he came up with that big third down play, too,
- 38:32covering 25 yards to keep things moving.
- 38:35So the Lions now are first and 10 at the barrel, 37.
- 38:39Nine, 10 to play here in the first half.
- 38:41That's Tiger Stadium, another set-out crowd watching this way.
- 38:46Very old-ish cast day.
- 38:48Very foggy here, as it has been for a couple of days.
- 38:51To hide the right is McCullough.
- 38:53The left side is Walton.
- 38:54The Lions have a first down on the Chicago 37-yard line.
- 38:57Walton and Taylor split in the backfield behind Greg Landry.
- 39:02That goes Landry.
- 39:03He throws a little swing back out in the left flat.
- 39:06I don't know why did he hit that ball?
- 39:07I believe he tipped the ball.
- 39:08He didn't.
- 39:09Looks like he might have tipped it a little bit.
- 39:11Anyway, it's thrown a little bit behind Larry Walton.
- 39:14He had no chance to get the ball.
- 39:16It goes back to the 37-yard line, where it will be second down
- 39:19and 10 yards to go now for the Detroit Lions from that point.
- 39:22Lions are trailing by a point, 14 to 13, with nine minutes
- 39:25and seven seconds of playing time remaining.
- 39:28Nice to have you with us.
- 39:29I hope you're enjoying the ball game today wherever you are.
- 39:31It's the Bears and the Lions at Tiger Stadium, Detroit.
- 39:35Wide to the right is McCullough.
- 39:36Split out to the left is Walton.
- 39:38Greg Landry barking out the six.
- 39:42Looking over that defense.
- 39:44He gives it all to Taylor.
- 39:46Taylor off left tackle is tipped up and the flag is down.
- 39:48He got to the 35-yard line where the flag went down.
- 39:50The Bears will be called for offside on the play, man.
- 39:53The play used to be a help.
- 39:54It'll be second down and the five to go.
- 39:56A little of any yardage gained a couple on the play,
- 39:59but the offside against the Bears will make it second down
- 40:01and five and give the Lions a break in there.
- 40:04Glad to have with us today some of our fine dealers from the
- 40:08Marathon Auto Company who are enjoying the ball game up here
- 40:11with us at Tiger Stadium along with 54,000 other fans.
- 40:15That's the third penalty against the Bears for 25 yards
- 40:18and brings up, as we mentioned, the second down.
- 40:20Five to go for Detroit from the 32.
- 40:2414-13, 9-0-2 to play here in the first half.
- 40:29Dallas leading New England 17-7 now in the second quarter
- 40:32and San Francisco leading St. Louis 10 to nothing.
- 40:36High formation, two flankers.
- 40:37They've led the zone to the left side this time.
- 40:39Sanders is on the right side.
- 40:41Greg Landry with the ball.
- 40:42He gives it to Owens.
- 40:43Owens to the 30, down to the 27-yard line with it
- 40:46before he's brought down.
- 40:48Steve Orr, twisting and turning with Jerry Lyle
- 40:50and Dick Kutcher holding onto it.
- 40:53He got very close to a first down for Detroit.
- 40:57Atlanta 21, New Orleans 6 in the third quarter.
- 41:00And Denver continues to lead Cleveland 24 to nothing.
- 41:05I know a lot of those fans over at the Cleveland Stadium
- 41:07have those radios looking like ball game, Bob,
- 41:09and I know they're a little shocked over there right now.
- 41:12Craig Cotton is coming in, getting too tight in for Detroit.
- 41:15Little Triple has come in there also as Larry Welton goes out.
- 41:19On this short yardage situation, third down,
- 41:22less than a yard to go.
- 41:24A lot of excitement out here, but the Lions are still
- 41:27on the short end of the 14-13 score.
- 41:30Their old man has kicked two field goals, 28, 49 yards.
- 41:34Look at this formation.
- 41:35There's the power eye.
- 41:36All right, and we've seen that.
- 41:38And here's Landry faking it to Owen,
- 41:40picking it back here to Taylor,
- 41:42and he's got a first down on the sweep.
- 41:45Step around the right side, and Jerry Lyle
- 41:47ran him out of bounds.
- 41:49Muckus is helping to officiate down there, Van.
- 41:52He's put his finger, his foot down to the back here.
- 41:55And I think he'll say, no, up here, enough for the first down.
- 41:58So the Lions keep it going, and Cotton and Triplett
- 42:02do the job that they went in there to do.
- 42:04It'll be first and 10 Detroit now at the 27-yard line
- 42:07of the Bears with 8 minutes short.
- 42:09That's just a whistle.
- 42:13Well, off the left side, McCullough to the right side,
- 42:17first and 10 from the 27 of the Bears.
- 42:20Landry and that power eye a moment ago.
- 42:22Now he's got him back in the process.
- 42:24Here's Owen following his locker, Flanagan.
- 42:26He's down to the 20, 19.
- 42:28The phone puts him up.
- 42:29Flanagan doing a good job of leading the way for him.
- 42:32The ball is spotted on the 20-yard line.
- 42:36So a gain of 7 by Steve Owens, and he's picking up some yardage
- 42:39and 10 carries, he's gained 54 yards.
- 42:44That's a 5.4, doesn't it?
- 42:47You've got to think about it.
- 42:50Even with the new man.
- 42:53What are we going to do when they can't go in the meeting?
- 42:55Well, they'll find a way.
- 42:58Second down, coming up at 3 to go.
- 43:00Eye formation, left the zone to the left with two receivers over there.
- 43:04Sanders on the right side.
- 43:06Here's Owen, and he is down to the 16-yard line on brute strength,
- 43:13making the tackle with Buccus and Charlie Ford.
- 43:17And it's another first down for Detroit on the 16-yard line,
- 43:21and that's 9 first down.
- 43:23What a bread and butter runner he is.
- 43:25He's got to have that 2 or 3 yards.
- 43:27He'll give it to Steve every time.
- 43:29He may get stopped occasionally, but he's good for 2 or 3 most of the time.
- 43:35He's developed a couple pretty good moves, man, too,
- 43:37like he gets back that line of scum as we noticed over the last 2 or 3 ball games.
- 43:41I think probably the most surprising thing about Owens is the fact that he's one of the better blockers
- 43:45down the lead, he is.
- 43:47It's beginning to rain at Tiger Stadium.
- 43:50Double wing formation, he's used all kinds of formations today.
- 43:54He's about to go, looks close to the end of the line, and he's got to.
- 44:0515-yard touchdown, a post pattern run by Larry Wabbert.
- 44:09And Landry hit it beautifully.
- 44:11Landry moves 68 yards in 9 plays and takes the lead now in the tailgame again.
- 44:25Grassmuth will haul, and Arrowman will attempt to make it 20 to 14.
- 44:31Slap, placement, pitch, good. Clock is stopped, scored, it's twice night, 20 now, Chicago 14.
- 44:42Arrowman setting it up on the 40 now as the Lions go out in front with 6.25 remaining in the first half, 20 to 14.
- 44:49Owens in 11 carries 58 yards.
- 44:52Landry 4 out of 7 in the air for 75, and that touchdown to Walton.
- 44:57Here's the deep along with Turner, and here's the boot.
- 45:01Coming down the slip on the goal line, he's back to the 5, 10, 15, 20.
- 45:06Right through the middle, Charlie Weaver got him.
- 45:09Will he be in there?
- 45:11And that is also Jesse and Bell on the tackle for Detroit.
- 45:16So the ball will be marked on the 29-yard line, a 29-yard return.
- 45:21It'll be first and 10 to go for the Chicago Bears from their own 29.
- 45:25Still winning, but not very heavy, but enough to get up the umbrella.
- 45:29Rain was forecast.
- 45:32Shy is back in there at fullback for Chicago.
- 45:36Al Clark playing that cornerback.
- 45:39Right to the left now is Gordon, to the right is Farmer.
- 45:43High formation Bobby Douglas, breaks him into the pro set.
- 45:46And Douglas going back to throw.
- 45:48He looks downfield, he looks, he throws, and it is caught but out of bounds by Farmer.
- 45:54And let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 45:57This is the Detroit Lions football network.
- 45:59Charlie Pittsburgh, 16 to 6 in the third quarter.
- 46:03The penalty backfield in motion against Chicago was declined by Detroit,
- 46:08which makes it second and 10 with the ball on the 29-yard line of Chicago.
- 46:15Farmer to the right, Gordon to the left.
- 46:18Bobby Douglas brings him out of it.
- 46:20Lions lead 20 to 14.
- 46:23Shy is, Grabowski on the running back.
- 46:27And here is Shy, breaking into the play again, a broken popper,
- 46:31and he's finally brought down on the 42-yard line and the flag is down.
- 46:36Walker, Clark, and they're looking there as Clark.
- 46:40They had a personal foul call against the Lions on the end of that one.
- 46:43That's the second one.
- 46:45That moves the ball deep, 42-yard line.
- 46:49Personal foul call against Detroit, puts the ball at the 42,
- 46:53gives the Bears another first down.
- 46:56You know, you're talking about the rain, man, I'm over it too.
- 46:58I'll tell you, when it rains in Texas, it really rains.
- 47:01They wear umbrellas in the Astrodome down.
- 47:04Ha ha.
- 47:06Good last week.
- 47:07That did last week.
- 47:09Gordon Wides the left.
- 47:11Farmer is put out to the right.
- 47:13First down on the Lions, 42, another costly penalty.
- 47:16Lions with defensive now jobs to be done,
- 47:20and the Grabowski piled up there on the 39-yard line, trying to run off left guard.
- 47:26And there's Jerry Rush and Dick Eadie.
- 47:28He's playing against his old teammates.
- 47:30Wayne Walker also on the tackle.
- 47:34Change of tight end again is Thomas McGrady with Wallace.
- 47:37They may be calling some plays for Bobby Douglas.
- 47:39Jim Dooley, the coach, has been rooming with Douglas all week in Chicago.
- 47:45Saying that Douglas's apartment, he said he was a bad cook.
- 47:48The lousy cook, he said.
- 47:49He said, yeah, I do all the dishes.
- 47:52Two flankers now.
- 47:54Gordon to the left, Farmer to the right.
- 47:57Five minutes to play in the half.
- 47:59Douglas with a long cadence count, gives it to Schia, and the whole pair again,
- 48:02right through the middle.
- 48:03He's at the 35 and down to the 34.
- 48:06Oh, he's going to find out the running for all what he picked up today now.
- 48:10He's doing a good job.
- 48:12Now Wallace is back in at the tight end, the ball's on the 34.
- 48:15He carries 66 yards.
- 48:17I tell you something, I think he's getting some help on the right side of his offensive line, too.
- 48:20They are blocking very well.
- 48:23On the three of his runs to the right side, they've used the trap play and very effectively.
- 48:29Well, the rain is about to stop.
- 48:31Now the sun's trying to break through all this overcast here.
- 48:33Ogden has replaced Farmer.
- 48:37Now here's almost a double wing, and they give it to Schia.
- 48:40Schia again, breaks the tackle.
- 48:42He's down to the 30.
- 48:43I want to tell you something, the Lions are not tackling the way they've been tackling.
- 48:48And they're bouncing well from today, and that's a first down for Chicago on the 30,
- 48:52and the Bears are coming right back again.
- 48:54I tell you, there's nothing shy about Schia.
- 48:56He just puts his head down and rams in there.
- 48:59He got into only eight games for the Bears last year, but he had 227 yards rushing and caught 10 passes.
- 49:05He was Pittsburgh's second draft choice in 67 and was with the Steelers a couple of years
- 49:10before they traded him to New Orleans in 1969.
- 49:13This is San Diego.
- 49:15Douglas on the call from the pro set.
- 49:18On the 30, back goes Douglas.
- 49:20He lifts, he throws, and it's caught at the 15-yard line.
- 49:24Dick LeBoe makes the tackle on Gordon, but he's picked it off, the leading receiver in the conference.
- 49:29First down on the 15-yard line.
- 49:31I want to tell you, young Douglas is doing a good job for the Chicago Bears.
- 49:36He's moving his ball club well.
- 49:38Lions are leading 20 to 14 over Chicago.
- 49:41Pender comes in and Schia goes out.
- 49:44That's a change in the backfield for Chicago.
- 49:4915-yard line, first down and 10 to go for Chicago.
- 49:52They started this drive on their own, 29, and they have moved it down to 15.
- 49:58That is a guy who has played as little as Douglas.
- 50:01He's seven out of nine for 92.
- 50:03He's doing a great job for the Bears.
- 50:05Douglas with the pro set again is going back to throw once more.
- 50:08Stays in that pocket.
- 50:09He has to run out of it.
- 50:11He lifts, he throws.
- 50:12It's caught for a touchdown by Wallace.
- 50:15The tight end.
- 50:17We had all night to throw it too, I'll tell you.
- 50:20And you cannot give the quarterback that much opportunity and that much of a time element
- 50:25to take out of his receivers because somebody is going to break the pattern and get loose,
- 50:29and that's exactly what happened on that touchdown pass.
- 50:33And the Bears now have come back, moving 71 yards in sixth place to take the lead again.
- 50:40At the moment, it's Hyatt and Mack Percival.
- 50:44Plus he falls down and breaks both legs.
- 50:47We'll probably put the Bears in front right here, 21 to 20.
- 50:52Pick it up and good.
- 50:55All the Chicago Bears have taken the lead again.
- 50:58They are leading Detroit by a score of 21 to 20.
- 51:02Hyatt out-checked the other scorers.
- 51:03Dallas leads New England 17 to 7 in the second quarter.
- 51:06The Dodgers 13, New York 7 in the second quarter.
- 51:10Trans-Portisco leads St. Louis 10 to nothing in the second quarter.
- 51:13Houston 16, Pittsburgh 6.
- 51:15Miami leading New York 13 to 7.
- 51:18And Denver leading Cleveland 27 and up.
- 51:21The tight end Wallace caught the touchdown pass.
- 51:25And he has three Lions around him, too.
- 51:27I don't know how he got that one, but I'll say this,
- 51:29Douglas hit him perfectly.
- 51:31So now the Chicago Bears will pick off to Detroit,
- 51:34and Ron Jeffery will have a chance to do his thing again.
- 51:38Al Crotch is going back with Ron Jeffery.
- 51:41That first of all, who just floated the extra point
- 51:44to give the Bears the lead, 21 to 20, will kick off.
- 51:48And Douglas, with that completion for the touchdown,
- 51:51is now 8 out of 10 for 107 yards.
- 51:54I'll tell you what, if he keeps going like that,
- 51:57he's going to be a great hitter.
- 51:59He's going to be a great hitter.
- 52:01He's going to be a great hitter.
- 52:03He's going to be a great hitter.
- 52:05His game is to 7 yards.
- 52:08I'll tell you what, if he keeps going like this,
- 52:10then the Chicago fans will go to duly.
- 52:13Where has he been all the rest of his team?
- 52:15He's left-handed.
- 52:17Here's the kick.
- 52:18High floating kick.
- 52:19Jeffery in the end zone by 2 yards.
- 52:21One, ten, fifteen,
- 52:24and he's going to be dropped this time on the 17 yard line.
- 52:27Barely holding out, finally,
- 52:29making the tackle in there with그렇.
- 52:32Detroit and not particularly great field position as they have the ball on their own 17 yard
- 52:37line with a first and 10 to go from that point.
- 52:42Denver 27 Cleveland nothing.
- 52:45Bynum back in the huddle now they'd like to get back to the least in field goal position
- 52:54here with only 220 to play in the first half.
- 52:57Walton to the right side McCullough to the right side Sanders is put out on the left
- 53:02side a double ring all into the slot and it's Taylor with the football following his rockers
- 53:06at the 20 up to the 25 yard line with it and all down there on the 25 by Ed O'Tredovich
- 53:12number 87.
- 53:13And here's the two minute warning coming up exactly two minutes to play in the first
- 53:22half.
- 53:23Andrew going over to the side of the ice coach Joe Schmidt to figure out what the two minute
- 53:29build strategy will be here training as they are by one point with two minutes left to
- 53:33play.
- 53:34That last play was how do you get a carrying the ball you see that so many times Taylor
- 53:39is that those very quick feet he had Walton out in front of him he goes to the other side
- 53:44he has Gallagher out in front of him and so many times you'll see him up there with his
- 53:48hand on the blocker just to get going just a little bit move one way or the other so
- 53:52I can get a little running road that time.
- 53:55Walton made the wrong move went out to the outside and Taylor tried to go outside too
- 54:00and the tackle was made after the pick up of about eight yards on it.
- 54:05So we've got a difficult Bear Lion game here with two minutes to play in the first half
- 54:09twenty one to twenty with the Bears out in front and Bobby Douglas their Cinderella quarterback
- 54:15that's all you can call him here today because he was pressed into service strictly out of
- 54:19necessity doing a great job.
- 54:21First and 10 from the second down brother and about two or three from the twenty seven
- 54:28humble but Landry covers it.
- 54:30Aldi Taylor fumbled the ball but Greg Landry fell on the ball Willie Holman disengaged
- 54:34him from the ball.
- 54:35They lose the score to 10 to 7 San Francisco now in the second quarter.
- 54:42The ball is on the twenty one yard line series originated on the 17th so it'll be third down
- 54:47in the long six so far in this ball game.
- 54:52Herman Weaver hasn't had the punch for the Lions.
- 54:54They've been able to pick up these third down situations and they've got a big one here.
- 54:59Lions are the highest scoring team of the league.
- 55:02They had 150 points going into this one so they've got 170 points so far but they're
- 55:07failing.
- 55:0821 to 20 Landry back to throw he's going to be done and over out of it.
- 55:19They've got the laundry and stocking back on the 12 yard line and now Weaver will get
- 55:20his opportunity about first chance to punt right here.
- 55:24I wanted to see the boys exciting once he either gets a nine yards or 99 right here
- 55:31the Lions would like to see him really booted.
- 55:33There's a timeout with 113 remain.
- 55:38Philadelphia still leading with Giants and the fourth period now 16 to 7.
- 55:45They lose maybe a little closer there that game with the 49ers and seven in the second
- 55:51period.
- 55:52We mentioned earlier the Lions next game is a week from tomorrow night at Milwaukee
- 55:57where they'll take on the Green Bay Packers and the extravaganza of each Monday night.
- 56:09Weaver walking back into the end zone now getting set for the snap of that planet going
- 56:14to him.
- 56:15Weaver needs to get a foot in the ditch.
- 56:28Weaver gets his kick away and he really pulled it out of the way all the way down to the
- 56:4736 yard line.
- 56:48He's dropped down on the 48 yard line.
- 56:49Back over to the 46 yard six on the part of Herman Weaver when he needed it.
- 56:50So the ball is on the 48 yard line of Chicago first and 10 for the Bears with a minute two
- 56:51seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 56:54The Bears now would like to move down to where they can try to three leading at 21 to 20.
- 57:01Jordan and Farmer the blankers.
- 57:03Gordon on the left side.
- 57:05Bobby Douglas going back to throw.
- 57:07Let's go to swing fast to Gwipowski.
- 57:09He's at the 50th flag.
- 57:11He's down to the 41 yard line.
- 57:1340 yard line.
- 57:15And in there is Ed Mooney now making the tackle for Detroit.
- 57:18But the looks like the family is going to be against the Bears.
- 57:24Ed Mooney is in there in place of Wayne Walker.
- 57:26No he's not.
- 57:27Walker is in there.
- 57:28He's out of there.
- 57:29Well they have an extra line back there in the back.
- 57:35We saw three linebackers.
- 57:37Newmauk, Rukey and Walker and then Mooney is another linebacker.
- 57:41Four penalties, 40 yards.
- 57:43So we got four linebackers in there.
- 57:46Rock shows 42 seconds.
- 57:5415 yard penalty against the Chicago Bears pushing on the play.
- 57:57Back first down 25 from the 34.
- 58:01Douglas now with two blankers.
- 58:03Back to throw again.
- 58:04Stays in the pocket.
- 58:05Throw to swing fast to Gwipowski.
- 58:07And he is walked down by Al Clark and Paul Newmauk on the 30 yard line.
- 58:15No game on the play.
- 58:35Two or three to roll.
- 58:36We came up with three point victories.
- 58:38I asked the owner of the Lions, Bill Ford, just before the Houston game,
- 58:41I said once, you know just once, can we win one by a touchdown?
- 58:44He said, what do you want, a route?
- 58:52Paul on the 34 yard line.
- 58:55It is second down and 25 yards to go.
- 58:58That's 23 really.
- 59:01The Bears break out of it.
- 59:02They send Farmer to the left, Gordon to the right.
- 59:09Bobby Douglas, two flip backs and back he goes to throw.
- 59:13He gets all day to throw and he throws it out of bounds.
- 59:16Gordon fell down.
- 59:19That stops the clock.
- 59:21That offensive line really doing a job with the Bears.
- 59:26Giving Douglas plenty of time.
- 59:27And that happens when you've got a situation like the Bears have here with a quarterback
- 59:31pressed into service with their regulars, Ken and the Knicks out of the lineup.
- 59:35Sometimes the lineman will say, well we've got to do just a little bit more.
- 59:39We've got to put out just a little bit more to protect the kid.
- 59:42And they certainly have done it here today.
- 59:44He's had plenty of time to throw.
- 59:46He walks up that line of scrimmage with all the boys in the world.
- 59:50Two flankers in the high formation, third down, 23.
- 59:53Douglas calling.
- 59:55Douglas on the draw now gives it to Drabowski.
- 59:57He runs right in the bell.
- 59:59The flag is down.
- 1:00:01On the 35 yard line, Bell made the tackle.
- 1:00:04He's in there to tackle Scott along with Wayne Walker on Drabowski.
- 1:00:07But the flag is down.
- 1:00:13LeBow and Gordon having some words down there.
- 1:00:19Dick, the former Michigan State star, the flag was thrown down when Gordon evidently pushed LeBow.
- 1:00:26And the flag went down and the bow had some words with him about it.
- 1:00:29And they walked back toward the football together.
- 1:00:32And at the last moment, Gordon gave him a shove.
- 1:00:36But the penalty was not for that.
- 1:00:38It had been called before that for offensive pushing.
- 1:00:42And that moved the ball back inside the 20 of the Bears now, down around the 18 yard line.
- 1:00:47What the official was doing was telling LeBow, now just keep your mouth, you know,
- 1:00:52I'll be yakking it up out there.
- 1:00:5565 yards and six penalties.
- 1:00:57The end of that chain is all the way down to the 42 yard line.
- 1:01:00They're back on the 18.
- 1:01:02So that's third down.
- 1:01:03Let's call it long yard.
- 1:01:05Very long.
- 1:01:06All right.
- 1:01:09At 37, 38.
- 1:01:10Waiting for it now is Douglas.
- 1:01:12He gives it off to Shy.
- 1:01:14Shy right through the middle.
- 1:01:16Brings it up to the 28 yard line.
- 1:01:18They stop the clock with 18 seconds to go.
- 1:01:22It's fourth down coming up so the Lions will get an opportunity to get the football again.
- 1:01:28Dallas leading New England 27 to 7.
- 1:01:32New York 16 to 7.
- 1:01:35Giants failing the Eagles.
- 1:01:39The ball is on the 28 yard line and Chuck Hughes and Larry Walton are going back now
- 1:01:44in the double safety spot for Detroit with 18 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half of Tiger Stadium.
- 1:01:52Leeds from tomorrow night will be in Milwaukee County Stadium to face the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:01:58Houston leading Pittsburgh 16 to 9 in the third quarter.
- 1:02:02Bobby Joe Green back in front.
- 1:02:09Here's the kick.
- 1:02:11High spiral on back court is Larry Walton.
- 1:02:14He's got it on the 22 of their catch.
- 1:02:18Did they throw a flag?
- 1:02:19Yeah they did.
- 1:02:20Bell ran into him bad down there.
- 1:02:21He just couldn't stop his momentum.
- 1:02:22That's about the third time that the youngster has been caught with that kind of a play.
- 1:02:27He's very quick and he just cannot seem to stop when he puts the pressure on the kicker.
- 1:02:33And he definitely ran into women knocked him down.
- 1:02:35And so the penalty will be stepped off there against Detroit.
- 1:02:41Now in college football, a roughing the kicker penalty does not mean an automatic first down.
- 1:02:49But in professional football it does.
- 1:02:53And so it will be the first down for the Bears at the 34 yard line.
- 1:02:58And with 11 seconds left, it gives Douglas an opportunity of course to go for the ball.
- 1:03:05At the 34 yard line, first and 10.
- 1:03:07That's 10 first downs for the Bears today.
- 1:03:10Bobby Douglas calling the signals and Douglas is going to keep it open play.
- 1:03:14He's knocked on the 34 yard line.
- 1:03:16Time will run out.
- 1:03:17That'll be lucky to get a timeout call and they do.
- 1:03:20Five seconds of playing time remaining.
- 1:03:24Douglas on a broken play just fell on the ball.
- 1:03:29So the Bears will have another shot with the ball on the 34 yard line.
- 1:03:32It'll be second down and 10 to go.
- 1:03:35Mike Rucci calling the defensive signals.
- 1:03:37Mike was fined $300 by the commissioner.
- 1:03:41Where is the rhubarb out here against the Packers?
- 1:03:43$50 is the standard fine and the other $250 for each word that he used.
- 1:03:51Even a dollar a word.
- 1:03:54They were pretty tough words that one day.
- 1:03:57Second and 10 to go now for the Bears who are leading by one, 21 to 20.
- 1:04:04Jordan to the left side and farmers deployed to the right side.
- 1:04:07This may be the last play of this half.
- 1:04:11Bob Bell in there defensively at that tackle spot.
- 1:04:14And it is Gribowski and he is dropped on the 41 and time runs out.
- 1:04:19There's the gun.
- 1:04:20That's the end of the first half of the score.
- 1:04:22Chicago 21 to 20.
- 1:04:25You'll see Bob Clark along with Ron Jesse dropping back in the deep spots to get the final two periods of play underway.
- 1:04:32And this sellout crowd of 54,000 plus settling back in their seats.
- 1:04:36They watch another half of action.
- 1:04:39And they are ready to bring it to you.
- 1:04:41Man Patrick.
- 1:04:42All right Bob Reynolds and first of all, Booth Fallen and Booth sit high and over in deep into the end zone.
- 1:04:47It's taken him to goal post.
- 1:04:49So he'll be brought back out to 21st down and 10 to go.
- 1:04:53Philadelphia leads New York 23 to 7.
- 1:04:55Dallas rolling over to England 34 to 7.
- 1:04:59They're in the second quarter in that one.
- 1:05:01And Atlanta is leading New Orleans 28 to 6.
- 1:05:04Denver ahead of Cleveland 27 to nothing.
- 1:05:06It's Houston 16, Pittsburgh 9 and Miami leading New Jersey or New York Jets rather 27 to 14.
- 1:05:14Nothing on the Kansas City Washington game.
- 1:05:17That's one of the standout ballgames.
- 1:05:19First and 10 Detroit from their own 20.
- 1:05:21Waltham to the right side.
- 1:05:22McCullers also on the spot on the right side.
- 1:05:25The eye formation with Owens and Taylor right back at Greg Landry.
- 1:05:28And here's the game to Taylor.
- 1:05:30Following Owens gets a block, turns the corner to 25, comes up to the 29.
- 1:05:34Getting nine yards.
- 1:05:36And Dick Pupchis made the tackle for Chicago.
- 1:05:45McCullers is also on the block on that play.
- 1:05:49And so the ball will be marked on the 29.
- 1:05:51It will be a second down and one to go for the Detroit Lions.
- 1:05:55Landry with four out of seven for 75 yards in the first half.
- 1:05:59Taylor in six carries at 17.
- 1:06:01Owens in 11 carries at 57.
- 1:06:03Landry in one has five.
- 1:06:08Landry ready now with the two flankers again.
- 1:06:11McCullers to the right side.
- 1:06:12Bucke is starting a little with Owens on the top.
- 1:06:15And Owens to the 33 and the tackle is made by Willie Holman.
- 1:06:19It will be a first down for Detroit on the 33 yard line.
- 1:06:22Still in Detroit territory.
- 1:06:2411th first down for Detroit in this ballgame today.
- 1:06:38First and 10.
- 1:06:40Wide to the right now is Walton.
- 1:06:43McCullers put out to the left.
- 1:06:45Waiting for it is Red Landry, first and 10 from the Lions.
- 1:06:4833.
- 1:06:49Taylor's in motion to the left.
- 1:06:51Landry is back to throw, stays in the pocket and throws.
- 1:06:54It's completed McCullers to 50.
- 1:06:56McCullers to the 45 and is out of bounds on the 44 yard line.
- 1:07:00First down for the Bullockers, the man who knocked him out of bounds.
- 1:07:06Jeter was also in on the tackle, the ball on the 44 yard line of Chicago.
- 1:07:10Detroit's ball first and 10.
- 1:07:12McCullers is not too very big.
- 1:07:15Instead of taking the easy way out over there along the sidelines and
- 1:07:18running out of bounds, put his head down into those two defenders there
- 1:07:22and picked up an extra yard as a result of the effort.
- 1:07:2424 yards on the play.
- 1:07:26Walton to the right, McCullers to the left.
- 1:07:29First and 10 from the Bear, 44 yard line.
- 1:07:32Detroit trailing 21 to 20.
- 1:07:34Landry back to throw again.
- 1:07:36Stays in the pocket and throws one deep, deep and it is complete.
- 1:07:40Into the end zone and I'm not so sure he didn't just throw that one away Bob.
- 1:07:45If Walton was held up down there around the 25 yard line he would have been
- 1:07:48the intended receiver until Landry just threw it away.
- 1:07:531243 to go in the third quarter.
- 1:07:56The Lions are trailing 21 to 20.
- 1:08:00Green Bay is at Los Angeles today.
- 1:08:04Final score, Philadelphia beat New York.
- 1:08:09This is the last home appearance of the Lions for a couple of games.
- 1:08:12As I mentioned we've played the Green Bay Packers a week from Monday and then
- 1:08:16it's on to Denver for a game with the Broncos for coming home to play the Rams.
- 1:08:21Walton to McCullers both on the right side, a double ring,
- 1:08:24split to the left of Sanders and back goes Landry again.
- 1:08:27He's dumped one out here in the right flat, it's completed.
- 1:08:30We're 40, no 4.
- 1:08:32Miller cuts back to the 36 yard line with it.
- 1:08:35He's not very close down there to picking up that first down.
- 1:08:38Butchers and Charlie Ford made the tackle for Chicago.
- 1:08:41Let's see where they mark it.
- 1:08:42It'll be around the 35 yard line and that's where it is
- 1:08:45and it'll be third down of the yard to go for Detroit.
- 1:08:48I think that's the first time that Butchers has got a hand on how he's
- 1:08:51played here today.
- 1:08:53They had a little by play if you recall a few fans last year in Chicago
- 1:08:58when Butchers not only ran him out of bounds but practically up in his stand.
- 1:09:03Greg Cotniss in there, two tight ends.
- 1:09:06Flanagan at center, Gallagher and Walton to the guard.
- 1:09:08Jarrow and Coyote at the tackle.
- 1:09:10Walton is the only flank that's set out just a few yards outside.
- 1:09:13Craig Cotniss on the right side.
- 1:09:15Greg Landry, third and one and he's back to throw on third and one.
- 1:09:19He throws it out here to hold it, 30 out of bounds.
- 1:09:23On the 26, 24 yard line,
- 1:09:26Goldbacher knocking out of bounds on the 24.
- 1:09:28He toss them up with a third to one.
- 1:09:30Good call.
- 1:09:32Good fake and then go back and step or two and hit Taylor over there beautifully.
- 1:09:40First down on the Bear, 24 yard line.
- 1:09:44First key, first down for Detroit.
- 1:09:49That's just calling those defensive signals.
- 1:09:51Boy, they have really been stunning at moving around on defense and changing
- 1:09:54it up from a zone to man and man and they've really been moving around.
- 1:09:57The Bears.
- 1:09:59Walton wide to the right.
- 1:10:02The colors on the left side.
- 1:10:03Landry to Owens.
- 1:10:04Owens to the 20.
- 1:10:05Owens to the 15 yard line with it.
- 1:10:08Stevens just whipping through that left tackle spot and on down to the 15.
- 1:10:12Butkus made the tackle along with Jeter.
- 1:10:17Butkus is a lovely player.
- 1:10:19I've been watching him.
- 1:10:20Flanagan's doing a good job on him.
- 1:10:23They're doing well.
- 1:10:25Second and one.
- 1:10:26Steve Owens is having himself another great day.
- 1:10:28He's scored the ball 13 times and gained 69 yards.
- 1:10:36That has 100 yards rushing today.
- 1:10:39High formation, two-pointed.
- 1:10:42Owens.
- 1:10:4412 and a flag.
- 1:10:48Limitary indication will be holding.
- 1:10:51Oh my, that's right.
- 1:10:5215 yards.
- 1:10:55In the very first quarter, in the opening moments of the ball game, the Lions have driven down there deep.
- 1:11:02Have the ball inside the five and a holding penalty set them back and the Lions have to settle with that 28 yard field goal.
- 1:11:08And here's another fine drive.
- 1:11:10There's six penalty for 56 yards that has put a crimp in this one, moving the ball to 29.
- 1:11:18So the down will remain second.
- 1:11:20But it will be now 15 for the first down.
- 1:11:25And that just drives the coaches berserk.
- 1:11:29Second down with about 14 yards to go for Detroit.
- 1:11:33Wide to the left side is McCullough.
- 1:11:35The right side is Walton.
- 1:11:36So Greg needs to hit one now to pick up that yardage he just lost.
- 1:11:41That's a post-up.
- 1:11:42He's going back to throw, staying in the pocket, looks downfield, and his arm was hit as he threw it.
- 1:11:47That knocked his aim right off.
- 1:11:49Sanders was the intended receiver.
- 1:11:51And in there was George Seals, the big tackle.
- 1:11:54And his aim was off.
- 1:11:56So that makes it third down.
- 1:11:59Chicago leading 21 to 20.
- 1:12:01We've got 10 minutes and 54 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:12:06Hodgson is coming in.
- 1:12:08No question also, Van, is when the Bears go on the offense, that the Lions have got to start putting some pressure on Douglas.
- 1:12:15They have not done so here in the ball game so far.
- 1:12:18He's had all kinds of time to throw, and you simply got to get to that quarterback.
- 1:12:22You either force him out of the pocket, force him to throw quicker than he wants to, or you're in trouble.
- 1:12:27Landry is four out of seven on third down situations.
- 1:12:30He's got one right now with Taylor in motion to the right.
- 1:12:33And he's going back to throw, rolls out to the left.
- 1:12:36He looks, he's going around, he's down to 25, he's down to 21, 22, and he's all down there by Willie Holman.
- 1:12:43On the 22-yard line, Landry is seven out of 12 and passing for 117 yards, and in comes Errol Mann.
- 1:12:54The receiver is pretty well covered, so Greg did about all he could do, and that's good with it.
- 1:12:58He moved the ball well down to the 21-yard line, which will make it fourth down and seventh.
- 1:13:02And Rasmussen is kneeling on the 29-yard line, and so it will be a 29-10.
- 1:13:0728-49, and now 29-10.
- 1:13:10Mann has kicked through today, 28 yards and 49 yards.
- 1:13:14He's kicking against the wind here.
- 1:13:18Kick is up.
- 1:13:21Yeah!
- 1:13:2329-yard field goal, the Lions lead by a score of 23-21.
- 1:13:28The clock stopped on the field, Detroit 23, Chicago 21.
- 1:13:32Whenever we're up and turning deep for Chicago, Scott Patrick along with Bob Reynolds and Tiger Stadium, the Lions lead 23-21.
- 1:13:41The move by Mann, good high and overhand kick, Turner on the one.
- 1:13:45Back to the five, 10, 15, down down.
- 1:13:50And word on the play with Nicky Zasco.
- 1:13:53Nicky gets up there a little groggy, but he made the tackle.
- 1:14:03Mann has just tied Jim Martin's career field goal for the Lions, 56 field goals.
- 1:14:13Now we'll see whether that Lions front defensive unit can put some pressure on W, because they must do so.
- 1:14:21We'll get to start getting to it.
- 1:14:24Rush and Bell and Rob are in the air for Detroit.
- 1:14:29Luchy right in the middle, and the good now is through the running back, Rob Oskine, who's down from the 17.
- 1:14:35All of the noise you're hearing at Tiger Stadium, the fans are cheering the defensive unit on right now.
- 1:14:42Thomas is in, Wallace is out, second down and nine, ball on the 17-yard line.
- 1:14:55Bobby Bell is in there, defensively at that tackle, Joe Rob is in there, Larry Hans, Larry Rush.
- 1:15:06Joe's set. There's Douglas on the pitch out now to shy, and shy as he reaches the 22-yard line by Paul Newball.
- 1:15:16And Al Park over there for the Lions on the 20-yard line.
- 1:15:23They'll mark it 840 to go here in the third quarter. The Lions are leading 23 to 21.
- 1:15:29Final score, Philadelphia 23, New York 7, and the Eagles have won their first game of the season.
- 1:15:40Ball on the 23-yard line of Chicago, and it's third down and about three to go.
- 1:15:44The crowd still yelling for the defensive unit to go to work.
- 1:15:48Wide to the left is Gordon.
- 1:15:50Farmer's flip to the right side, and Bobby Douglas calling the signal.
- 1:15:56Long-chain's comp gives it off the side. He's comped with the 24.
- 1:16:00He didn't make the first down.
- 1:16:02So the defensive unit is heightened up here in the third quarter.
- 1:16:06San Francisco is leading St. Louis 13 to 7.
- 1:16:11They're all bringing up a fourth down.
- 1:16:13Mike Lucci is getting up a little wobbly right now, I want to tell you.
- 1:16:16He's playing with injuries. Paul Newball is helping him off.
- 1:16:20Mike was shaken up over there.
- 1:16:23Mike Lucci going over the bench there with Dr. Geis and Dr. Thompson.
- 1:16:28And dropping back now, Larry Walton along with Chuck Hughes and Bobby Joe Green is going to do the kicking for Chicago.
- 1:16:34The ball's on the 25 and a fourth down and two.
- 1:16:37Seven-25 to play. Lions lead by two.
- 1:16:41And here's the kick by Green, a high spiral, and it's going to bounce here on about the 45,
- 1:16:47and the Bears will let it go, and it bounce all the way upfield in the 43-yard line.
- 1:16:52So the Lions will have great field position.
- 1:16:55That was a kick of 34 yards on the part of Bobby Joe Green.
- 1:17:00We're watching Lucci over there.
- 1:17:02Lions could ill afford to lose that boy.
- 1:17:05He's walking around. He should be all right.
- 1:17:08At least he's ambledore right now.
- 1:17:11There's a timeout on the field with a score.
- 1:17:18Detroit 23, Chicago 21.
- 1:17:21Three passes to Taylor in the late flat.
- 1:17:24The phone makes the tackle.
- 1:17:26They'll mark the ball on the 46-yard line.
- 1:17:30Five yards gained on the play.
- 1:17:32Second down and five to go.
- 1:17:34They're working on Mike Lucci's ankle.
- 1:17:41So they're going to have a second and five for Detroit from their own 46-yard line.
- 1:17:45Good field position.
- 1:17:47Larry Walton stood out to the left side.
- 1:17:49Plank the right is Earl McCullough.
- 1:17:50Taylor has carried four times for 38 yards.
- 1:17:52Caught four of it for 38 yards.
- 1:17:55Waiting for it now is Greg Landry.
- 1:17:56And motion goes Taylor.
- 1:17:58And the oh, that time, Olfons ran over the quarterback, Greg Landry,
- 1:18:03and shook him up a little.
- 1:18:05That's the hardest Landry's been hit all day.
- 1:18:09Out of the hand, Steve just ran right over.
- 1:18:13Now here's that key third down situation again.
- 1:18:15Landry was four out of seven of them in the first half in picking them up.
- 1:18:19And he'll have another opportunity here.
- 1:18:21It'll be a big one on the 45-yard line.
- 1:18:23Six minutes of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:18:25The Lions lead it 23-21.
- 1:18:28Well, Pittsburgh has gone ahead of Houston 23-16.
- 1:18:33Walton to the right, McCullough to the left.
- 1:18:35Landry will probably put it in the air here with his third and five.
- 1:18:38And back he goes to throw.
- 1:18:40He looks he's in trouble back there.
- 1:18:42He's going to be brought down back on the 40-yard line.
- 1:18:45He just couldn't get rid of it.
- 1:18:46The Bears had the fast rush on.
- 1:18:49And he was brought down by Ed O'Gradovich.
- 1:18:53And so that'll bring Herman Weaver in for his second pick of the day.
- 1:18:56And Ron Smith is going back along the turner for Chicago.
- 1:19:00That's been the difference in the ballgame defensively between both clubs.
- 1:19:03The Lions have had the rush on them all day.
- 1:19:06They've been able to contain the Chicago Bear running attack fairly well.
- 1:19:09But they have not been able to put any pressure whatsoever on Douglas.
- 1:19:13On the other side of the coin, that Bear front four has done a good job.
- 1:19:18Thompson is in there at center for the Detroit Lions.
- 1:19:21Herman Weaver back in pick formation.
- 1:19:27Perfect pass from center.
- 1:19:29Weaver gets it away.
- 1:19:31Booms it high.
- 1:19:32Coming down to Ron Smith.
- 1:19:34And Smith takes it at the 15 going wide.
- 1:19:37Being chased by Jesse.
- 1:19:38And he's thrown down by Jesse.
- 1:19:40Whoo, what a throw down.
- 1:19:42Ron Jesse just gave him a swing.
- 1:19:46The ball will be down on the 15 or 16, a 45-yard kick on the 16-yard line.
- 1:19:53That at that time hadn't have been there.
- 1:19:55That Bear receiver would have been down there by the go-go super-franc tonight.
- 1:20:02Hirston from Chicago from the 16-yard line.
- 1:20:05And the crowd starts to yell for the defensive unit again.
- 1:20:10Bears have no trouble hearing the statement.
- 1:20:12Jordan wide to the left, Farmer to the right, and the throw set.
- 1:20:16Robowski is back there with Don Shy.
- 1:20:18And Douglas back to throw.
- 1:20:20What a throw that he has caught.
- 1:20:22On the 20-yard line, the tackle is made on George Farmer.
- 1:20:25Tackle made by Al Clark.
- 1:20:28On the 20, so he got four on the play.
- 1:20:30It'll be second down in six-five minutes to play in the third quarter.
- 1:20:33Detroit leading 23 to 21.
- 1:20:40Miami leading the Jets now 30 to 14.
- 1:20:45No report on Washington and Kansas City yet.
- 1:20:48Buffalo lost to San Diego.
- 1:20:51Farmer's caught five passes today for 83 yards.
- 1:20:55Throw set again.
- 1:20:56New ball moving out, spinning a little bit.
- 1:20:58Waiting for it is Douglas, second down.
- 1:21:00And he gives it off to Shy.
- 1:21:02And Shy running up the middle.
- 1:21:04Backed up on about the 23-yard line, but the middle of that line.
- 1:21:09Paul Newboff and Wayne Walker on the tackle.
- 1:21:12Larry Hand.
- 1:21:15Now Wallace is coming back in at the tight end.
- 1:21:18Thomas goes out.
- 1:21:20Change for the Bears.
- 1:21:21Reports end the goal in the third quarter.
- 1:21:28Shy and 15 carries.
- 1:21:30They've gained 91 yards.
- 1:21:32He's got a good day.
- 1:21:35Farmer to the left side.
- 1:21:37Jordan to the right side.
- 1:21:39Shy and Grabowski.
- 1:21:40They haven't utilized Grabowski very much today other than the blocker.
- 1:21:43Douglas going back.
- 1:21:46And he's rolling out to the left.
- 1:21:48He's going to run with a football.
- 1:21:49He's got a first down at the 31.
- 1:21:52Wayne Walker made the tackle long with Mike Lucey who's back in there.
- 1:21:56Got a first down.
- 1:21:57And once again that Lyon defense commuted not getting to Douglas.
- 1:22:03And he picks up the first down through the 31.
- 1:22:08That's number 12 in the way of first down for the Bears.
- 1:22:11320 to go in the third quarter.
- 1:22:14Now Jerry Rush and Bob Bell are the tackle for the short.
- 1:22:18Larry Hand and Joe Robb are the defensive ends.
- 1:22:24Bobby Douglas now with two bankers against.
- 1:22:27Go set.
- 1:22:29He waits.
- 1:22:30He takes it.
- 1:22:31Back to those who swing fast out of the right side.
- 1:22:34It's too important but the tackle is made immediately by LeBau on the 36 to 5 yard game.
- 1:22:40So it's second and five.
- 1:22:44Windsor still leading Cleveland 27 and nothing.
- 1:22:48Jim Dooley with his tight end standing in the play as to the young quarterback.
- 1:22:53Douglas almost after every series of downs.
- 1:23:01Bears come out of it with a second down and five situation from their own 36 yard line.
- 1:23:06Gordon is split to the right.
- 1:23:07And he is the only banker.
- 1:23:09Two ends are in play.
- 1:23:11Eye formation top of the eye shy and tries to take the fake and Douglas back to go.
- 1:23:17He's got a great time and goes one deep and look out.
- 1:23:26Well there's a break for the Lions and again Douglas having time to throw.
- 1:23:30Threw it out there beautifully.
- 1:23:32But Gordon they ruled caught it out of bounds.
- 1:23:34And so there's a break for the Lions brings it back to the 36.
- 1:23:38And brings up a third down and five to go.
- 1:23:43It's four out of eight on his third down.
- 1:23:48That off engine line.
- 1:23:53Well let's say you put a high school point about that if he's got all day he could roll.
- 1:24:02All on the 35 yard line where it'll be third down and five to go for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:24:08And they send Gordon out wide to the right side to the left side.
- 1:24:13And Gordon is to the left.
- 1:24:15Third down.
- 1:24:16Big play coming up for Bobby Douglas.
- 1:24:19Douglas takes it goes back to throw again.
- 1:24:21He looks he throws one deep and the ball goes back there covering this man Gordon.
- 1:24:26And it doesn't complete.
- 1:24:27Put a little pressure on him that time Bobby.
- 1:24:29That's about one of the few times that they had and Douglas let it go over the head of his intended receiver.
- 1:24:34So first that will bring up a fourth down now and bring in the punter with two oh five showing on the clock here in the third quarter.
- 1:24:40And the Lions leading at twenty three to twenty one.
- 1:24:43Next week we'll hope you'll join us on the Lion Network for the broadcast a week from the one on our at Milwaukee when the Lions take on the Green Bay Packers another of the interconference clashes with Danny Devine's club.
- 1:24:55Then the Lions after that one who traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos before returning home to play the Los Angeles Rams.
- 1:25:03Bobby Joe Green is the kicker and he was as deep of Walton for Detroit and here's the pass and center and the kick and the high wobbly kick.
- 1:25:11We often take it on the third and is it immediately.
- 1:25:14That's all made right on the third.
- 1:25:15That was almost a good place to catch one thirty four yards on the kick and the man that hit him was shaken up on the play more than Walton.
- 1:25:22And that was Brady.
- 1:25:25So.
- 1:25:27There's a timeout the Broncos stopped on the field with a score of twenty three Chicago twenty one.

- 1:26:08A champagne velvet party tonight.

- 1:26:21And with champagne velvet you can afford to make any occasion worth celebrating.
- 1:26:25Champagne velvet another fine product of Associated Brewing Company Evansville St. Paul and South Bend.
- 1:26:33First and then for Detroit from their own thirty and Landry on their gift and failure.
- 1:26:38He's going wide at the block right in the corner and he's finally forced out of bounds losing yardage.
- 1:26:45Forced out of bounds over there on the twenty five yard line and making the tackle a red over out of it.
- 1:26:52Smith also in on the tackle for Chicago back on the twenty seventh so he lost three.
- 1:26:57Meryl Manistick three field goals twenty eight forty nine twenty nine yards so far.
- 1:27:02The Lions lead the Bears twenty three to twenty one.
- 1:27:09Pittsburgh leading Houston now twenty three to sixteen.
- 1:27:12McCullough in eight carries twenty three yards.
- 1:27:16Walked wide to the right side McCullough deployed to the left with Owens and Taylor the setbacks for Detroit.
- 1:27:21Landry back to throw staying in the pocket.
- 1:27:24Flag is down it's completed the Sanders and Sanders is finally knocked out of the thirty seven but a flag is down.
- 1:27:35And let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 1:27:38This is the Detroit Lions football network.
- 1:27:40WJR Detroit.
- 1:27:46Monday at Sears a thirty three percent on all weather motor oil special entities get easy starts in winter.
- 1:27:51Ten court can only two ninety nine at Sears.
- 1:27:56Back here the penalty after the flag against Detroit another holding penalty.
- 1:28:01That nullifies the past completion of Charlie Sanders who took a good shot at the end of it from Dick Butchers.
- 1:28:06They've been proud to take notice for a moment at the seventh penalty against Detroit for seventy one yards and that's them back in the hole again inside their own fifteen at the fourteen yard line.
- 1:28:21It's a long way down to pull them out of the spot.
- 1:28:25They're back on the thirteen yard line.
- 1:28:27And Landry is back to throw staying in the pocket. He lets me throw and it is incomplete and almost intercepted by Chicago's Charlie Ford.
- 1:28:36It's better for Walter and almost intercepted.
- 1:28:39A lot of it was putting the pressure on Greg Landry.
- 1:28:46Final score Pittsburgh twenty three Houston sixteen final score Miami thirty New York yet fourteen final score Denver twenty seven Cleveland nothing.
- 1:28:56We're going to have a barbecue on these and go out of business quickly.
- 1:29:06On the thirteen yard line third down twenty six yards to go.
- 1:29:13Atlanta beat New Orleans twenty eight to six.
- 1:29:19And then to the right side of Sanders put out a little back is one of the little trouble out there.
- 1:29:26But he's going to be pulled down the line of scum by field.
- 1:29:30Well, then you can't say it out of course about the job that that defensive unit of the Bears is turning in here today.
- 1:29:37They have that pressure on Landry all day today.
- 1:29:40In contrast, the Lions have simply not been able to get the Douglas except on maybe one or two occasions. And as a result, Douglas has had good protection back there and been able to complete his passes.
- 1:29:53And on the other hand, Landry, of course, without that protection is in all kinds of trouble.
- 1:29:58A minute and twenty five remaining fourth down long yardage twenty six and we will have to boot it out of there.
- 1:30:05The other thing along with Turner, Turner is a short man and we were in the end zone.
- 1:30:11So he's got to get the foot in it again. Now, I'm moving out of there.
- 1:30:14Otherwise, the Bears are going to come up with great field position.
- 1:30:18Good pass from center. He fumbles the ball.
- 1:30:20The drop and the Bears were going to cut down, but a flag is down.
- 1:30:26The man who came up with it, we were dropped the pass from center.
- 1:30:37There's a great break.
- 1:30:39Landry fumbled the pass from center and dropped it.
- 1:30:42The kick was blocked.
- 1:30:43The Bears picked it up, took it in for a touchdown, but a holding penalty against Chicago will nullify that one.
- 1:30:51The Bears are going to fall up to the 18 yard line and it's an automatic first down for Detroit.
- 1:30:58And that's got to be probably then the biggest break of the entire ballgame for Detroit.
- 1:31:04And it's the sixth suddenly against the Bears for 71 yards.
- 1:31:07The Lions have had seven for 71.
- 1:31:11Could be the biggest break of the season.
- 1:31:13The Bears were holding at 14. We were dropped the pass from center, which is a good pass.
- 1:31:21And then it was blocked by the Bears.
- 1:31:24Drew Biker picked it up and went into the end zone with a holding penalty against Chicago.
- 1:31:28And Dooley's a little upset over there.
- 1:31:32Look at Ed Gibbons, he's a little upset too.
- 1:31:39The Lions have the football first and 10 on their own 18 yard line.
- 1:31:46The microphone down there along the sidelines right now, man, with Ed Gibbons and Jim Dooley and the rest of the Bear coaching staff.
- 1:31:55Probably giving it to that official pretty good.
- 1:31:57He better get out on the field as they attend it.
- 1:32:02Two flaggers, Walton to the right side, McCulloch to the left side.
- 1:32:05Lions lead it 23 to 21, a minute to go in the third quarter.
- 1:32:09Taylor's in motion. Owens is hit by a field, thrown down at the 15.
- 1:32:15He took the handoff and couldn't go anywhere.
- 1:32:20And Bear defense is really fighting up on the offensive line.
- 1:32:23They're doing a great job for Dutchess.
- 1:32:26The Lions have the ball on the 16.
- 1:32:28Now they have second down and 12, 40 seconds to play in the third quarter.
- 1:32:46Ready to go now with Walton wide to the right, McCulloch to the left.
- 1:32:50Dropping off that secondary now, loosening them up a bit.
- 1:32:53That goes Landry to throw. He throws and it is in complete.
- 1:32:58It was a good play by Puckett.
- 1:33:00But to strip the ball out of the hands of Larry Walton.
- 1:33:03Third down to Troy.
- 1:33:05Puckett's incidentally leads the Chicago Bears in interception.
- 1:33:08He has had four on the unseason so far.
- 1:33:11Not very much yardage after the interception,
- 1:33:14but he's been in position to pick off four of them for nine yards.
- 1:33:19He's all over that place.
- 1:33:23Ball back on the 16, it's third and 12 to go for Detroit.
- 1:33:33The Bears right now have three men up front.
- 1:33:36They've got everybody else dropping back.
- 1:33:38Look at this. They've got a three-man line up there.
- 1:33:41Now they move a couple up.
- 1:33:43Ryan Early, three rushes, waiting for it.
- 1:33:49It's Greg Landry with a third and 12.
- 1:33:51He's going back to throw.
- 1:33:53Baves in the pocket and throws one and it is intercepted by Chicago.
- 1:33:57Intercepted by...
- 1:34:00Yeah, a gun and he has finally knocked down on the 21-yard line.
- 1:34:04He's going to intercept the ball.
- 1:34:06Here we go. There's the gun.
- 1:34:08That's the end of the third quarter.
- 1:34:10Detroit 23, Chicago 21.
- 1:34:16Rob Reynolds along with Dan Patrick from Tiger Stadium up Linger going here.
- 1:34:1923-21, the Lions hanging on now with 15 minutes more to play in this ballgame.
- 1:34:24The Bears with a fine field position at the Lions 31 after the interception,
- 1:34:28as Douglas calls his club back in.
- 1:34:32Lions in their defensive huddle inside the 30.
- 1:34:37And the rush of the first line of the Bears doing a great job.
- 1:34:42And in contrast, the Lions offensive line having difficulty.
- 1:34:47Douglas is 11 out of 15 for 121 yards, so he's been having a good day.
- 1:34:53They came up the line of service once back again.
- 1:34:55We have 15 minutes now to go.
- 1:34:57We're in the final quarter here at Tiger Stadium with a two-point lead
- 1:35:00and the Bears right down on the 31-yard line.
- 1:35:04What was it that Brickhouse said, the final option for the Chicago Bears
- 1:35:07about Douglas, he said that he has a great day here today.
- 1:35:10One thing he's sure he'll be playing on is out in the game.
- 1:35:12That'll be the first of us for the break.
- 1:35:15Wide to the right now goes Gorse.
- 1:35:18He's the only friend.
- 1:35:20Farmer's in tight. Douglas waits.
- 1:35:22Douglas gives it off the shy.
- 1:35:24He's coming wide trying to turn that corner.
- 1:35:26Cutscene is bumped on the 27-yard line.
- 1:35:29He was hit by Al Farr.
- 1:35:32Bobby Mitchell is not in there, and whether Jim Mitchell is not in there
- 1:35:40for the Lions, and he's been outed, we've checked him on the bench over there.
- 1:35:43He's all right.
- 1:35:45But he has not been playing.
- 1:35:47And Ball is in there, and a tackle in place of Easey.
- 1:35:51And the ball's on the 27-yard line now.
- 1:35:53That second down coming up stands about six and a half.
- 1:35:57Farmer to the right side, the I-formation.
- 1:36:01Jordan going to the left side.
- 1:36:04Second down, one of the pros, Douglas.
- 1:36:07False timeout.
- 1:36:08They got bust up somewhere in that backfield.
- 1:36:11Douglas wasn't sure of the play and very smartly called the time to go over to the bench now
- 1:36:15to talk to Doolin and straighten it out.
- 1:36:17He wants to make very sure with the fine field position that he has that he doesn't make any mistakes.
- 1:36:22And conversely, Mike Lucey goes over to talk to defensive coordinator Jimmy David over there
- 1:36:27to see that he's got what he wants to do defensively, straighten their out.
- 1:36:33And second down, but the ball where it is, neither team, of course, wants to make a mistake.
- 1:36:40All on the 27-yard line, second down, about six and a half to go for the Chicago Bears on the Detroit 27.
- 1:37:04Bobby Douglas, 11 out of 16, 121 yards, running the ball club.
- 1:37:10And out of it he comes.
- 1:37:11Since Farmer wide to the left, Gordon is split to the right.
- 1:37:14Grabowski and Shy are the running backs.
- 1:37:17And Douglas starts out to dig.
- 1:37:21And Douglas pitches it now.
- 1:37:22Shy is going to throw the ball.
- 1:37:24He's going to run with it now and he's caught from behind.
- 1:37:27Bobby Bell caught it.
- 1:37:30Mike Lucey was winning and he was going to throw the ball.
- 1:37:33That was a play, Bob.
- 1:37:34A half-back option of a pass on the end of it.
- 1:37:37That's the first time we've seen it today, but I'm sure that the Lions had that in a playbook
- 1:37:41and expected it somewhere along the course of the ball game.
- 1:37:45At that time they came up with it and didn't make it go.
- 1:37:47So it's third down and that key down situation again.
- 1:37:51Third and about 12.
- 1:37:53Wallace is in there now at the tight end, replacing Thomas.
- 1:38:00And they put Farmer to the left, Gordon to the right.
- 1:38:04Third and 12.
- 1:38:08Douglas going back to throw.
- 1:38:10Gave him the pocket, rolled back now, looking down for him.
- 1:38:13He throws and it's caught at the 18-yard line.
- 1:38:18The tight end caught the ball.
- 1:38:21Tight end Wallace.
- 1:38:23Lucey in on the tackle, but it's the first down for the Bears and Douglas really came up with a big play, didn't he?
- 1:38:29And they again, the Lions, if they're not able to get to him,
- 1:38:33he rolled out there, had some good running room, but wisely stopped,
- 1:38:36picked out a receiver and let it fly for the big first down.
- 1:38:39So it's at the 18 now.
- 1:38:41First and 10 for the Bears who trail but fight two.
- 1:38:45That's 13 first downs with 12.50 to play in the ball game.
- 1:38:49Farmer to the right, to the left is Gordon.
- 1:38:53Douglas gives the shy.
- 1:38:55Shy is gang tackle, but he's a hard running back.
- 1:38:58He's at the 15, driving the 100-yard margin.
- 1:39:0495 yards he has gained today.
- 1:39:09So it'll be second down coming up now with the ball on the 15-yard line,
- 1:39:13second down and seven.
- 1:39:14And the clock is moving with 12.20 to play.
- 1:39:25The Dallas still leading New England 34 to seven.
- 1:39:30Gordon is wide to the right side, split off to the left is Farmer.
- 1:39:35Waiting for it is Bobby Douglas, second down,
- 1:39:37and Douglas going back to throw, stays in the pocket.
- 1:39:40Runs out of it again, a flag is down.
- 1:39:42He throws his cup, but a flag is down on the 11-yard line.
- 1:39:46Mike Weaver made the tackle on the receiver down shy, but a flag went down.
- 1:39:51Looks like it's against the Lions, Van, another one.
- 1:39:57And that one will hurt.
- 1:40:04There's discussion going on about it.
- 1:40:07We had two calls down there.
- 1:40:08They offset them.
- 1:40:11Here comes the referee.
- 1:40:15Holding against Detroit, backfield in motion against Chicago.
- 1:40:20They nullify each other.
- 1:40:24And the point is up to 11, or up to 16, whether it's second down and eight.
- 1:40:30Second and eight.
- 1:40:32Down shy was on the receiving end of that pass,
- 1:40:35and now Thomas is coming back in in place of Waller.
- 1:40:39Second down for the Chicago Bears, and the clock's still moving, 11.54.
- 1:40:45Out of the huddle they come, with Gordon to the right side
- 1:40:48and Gordon to the left side, now it's Farmer.
- 1:40:51George Farmer, UCLA.
- 1:40:55Douglas, back, throws one, completed the Farmer.
- 1:40:58Farmer's at the five and out of bounds on the four and three.
- 1:41:01Oh, he was wide open over there on that sideline pattern.
- 1:41:05Van and LeBeau ran him out of bounds, but not before they got a first down.
- 1:41:10Around the neighborhood of the two-yard line, they got a mark, he went out of three.
- 1:41:13He was placed down on the three.
- 1:41:15First and goal to go, Chicago.
- 1:41:18You know, it would almost be better to let him score right here
- 1:41:20so he could have more time on the clock, wouldn't it?
- 1:41:22He's just fine.
- 1:41:28Wallace is back in.
- 1:41:30Farmer's caught six passes today for 96 yards.
- 1:41:34They've been cheating a little on Gort to lead the league,
- 1:41:37and in place of them, Farmer's been touching the ball.
- 1:41:41He's been open.
- 1:41:43He's been double-teaming Gordon some.
- 1:41:46Tight formation, waiting for it to judge him.
- 1:41:49Shy, at the goal line, Luchi shoved him back.
- 1:41:53I don't believe he got over.
- 1:41:57Luchi and Company, topping him on about the one.
- 1:42:00Detroit leading 23 to 21, but that lead is in jeopardy right now,
- 1:42:04with the Bears right down there, inside the one-yard line.
- 1:42:08Jim Mitchell is coming back in.
- 1:42:09Evie is back in.
- 1:42:11Move off and Walker's off.
- 1:42:13Ball on the one.
- 1:42:24Now they're out of the huddle.
- 1:42:30About to see him shy, right back to the quarterback.
- 1:42:33One flanker going to the right.
- 1:42:36And a back move.
- 1:42:39One of the backs move, and let's see what happens.
- 1:42:42The backs move, the bar goes down,
- 1:42:45so the Lions made contact with him.
- 1:42:48So let's see what the officials are going to do about it.
- 1:42:53Well, the movement on the part of the Chicago running back was first.
- 1:42:58He then stopped, and then the Lions moved through and made contact.
- 1:43:04So the question becomes here, in as much as the Bears back,
- 1:43:09that's back and set without moving,
- 1:43:11but the penalty is against Detroit.
- 1:43:13It is.
- 1:43:14However, the penalty only goes about six inches,
- 1:43:17because that's about all that they have to move at half the distance to the goal,
- 1:43:21about a foot away.
- 1:43:23And that didn't make that much difference.
- 1:43:27They can't get it in from six inches back from where it is now.
- 1:43:30They're not going to get it in.
- 1:43:34That just brings them out of it.
- 1:43:35The fans are booing, but the call was right.
- 1:43:38Redwood from the streets over touchdown, Chicago.
- 1:43:46Redwood ducked it over on the quarterback's feet.
- 1:43:49The call was a good one.
- 1:43:5131 yards and 7 plays after the fast interception.
- 1:43:54The Bears lead it 27 to 23.
- 1:43:56The back will move, the back will stop.
- 1:44:00And so the Lions then moved across to make contact,
- 1:44:03and that was offside to Detroit, illegal procedure.
- 1:44:06Now Percival will attempt to make it 28-23.
- 1:44:10That puts the Lions out of field goal range.
- 1:44:13They're going to go for the big one.
- 1:44:17San Francisco still leading St. Louis 13 to 7.
- 1:44:21Bobby Douglas, who got scored, will hold,
- 1:44:23and Percival will attempt to get to the point.
- 1:44:3231-7, and here's the kick.
- 1:44:35The depth is good.
- 1:44:37The clock is stopped on the field with a score of Chicago 28 and Detroit 23.
- 1:44:4610-56 to go in the ball game, and the Bears now in front 28-23.
- 1:44:51Percival sets it up on the 40.
- 1:44:53Jesse back there along with Al Clark, and this crowd settles down,
- 1:44:57realizing the Lions in trouble here.
- 1:45:00Here's the booth now by Percival, good high and overhand kick.
- 1:45:04Jesse's going back for it in the end zone, and he's left not to run it out.
- 1:45:09And that's why, because the Bears have good coverage on that one,
- 1:45:12they'll bring it out to 20 where it'll be first down at 10 to go for Detroit.
- 1:45:16The Lions at 10-15, they fail by 28-23.
- 1:45:28St. Louis still trailing San Francisco 13 to 7, and Dallas leading New England 34-7.
- 1:45:32The other games are over that we have been passing along.
- 1:45:36Los Angeles leads Green Bay 7-0 in the first quarter,
- 1:45:40stepping on Washington and Kansas City.
- 1:45:44Two flankers to the right side.
- 1:45:46Chuck Hughes is in there now and stood out to the right.
- 1:45:48And Landry on again to Owen.
- 1:45:50Going up the middle, comes one up to the 29-yard line with it on the first right up the middle.
- 1:45:55The tackle was made by Lyle, Gary Lyle.
- 1:46:00Owen's got nine yards. It'll be second down and one.
- 1:46:05Fourth quarter now, San Francisco leads St. Louis 16 to 7.
- 1:46:12To the right is Chuck Hughes, to the left is McCullough.
- 1:46:16So Walton is out of there.
- 1:46:19Taylor and Owens are set back.
- 1:46:21Landry looking over that defense, and Landry gives it to Owen.
- 1:46:24Owen gets the first down, moving to the 33 up the middle, and feels like the tackle for Chicago.
- 1:46:31So they have a first down. They have it on the 33-yard line,
- 1:46:34but the Lions are trailing 28 to 23 and that's 15 first down.
- 1:46:43The Rams and Tommy Perlbrough are improving all the time.
- 1:46:46They're leading Green Bay 7 to nothing.
- 1:46:48One week from tomorrow night, the Lions will meet Green Bay and County Stadium in Milwaukee.
- 1:46:52Hughes flanked out to the right side, McCullough's on the right side,
- 1:46:55and Sanders defluxed to the left at the double-wing formation.
- 1:46:59The running back is Alfie Taylor.
- 1:47:02Landry gives it to Taylor.
- 1:47:05Taylor turns the corner, and he's going to be knocked out of bounds at the 33-yard line.
- 1:47:11Steele's chasing him out over there along with Buckeye.
- 1:47:15And a defense is back coming up, and that was Jeter.
- 1:47:20So they'll march that ball on the 33-yard line, no gain on the play.
- 1:47:24And the clock, and that's important now, is 9.29, and Crippa's coming in for Detroit.
- 1:47:29And going out is Steve Owens.
- 1:47:32Owens and 16 carries today have gained 80 yards.
- 1:47:44Now Hughes and McCullough are both on the right side, and Sanders has wired to the left.
- 1:47:49In the flop, the left is Crippa.
- 1:47:51There's a double-wing second down and 10 yards to go from the 33-yard line of Detroit.
- 1:47:56And Greg Landry goes back to the floor, staying in the pocket, throws one to Crippa, over to him.
- 1:48:02He had him open down the middle, Bob.
- 1:48:06And he was getting some pressure there, too, from Willie Holman, the defensive end,
- 1:48:10four-year man from South Carolina State.
- 1:48:13And Holman hit him about a second or so after Landry let it go.
- 1:48:17I don't think he could see very well on the play.
- 1:48:19He's always a big guy, and he just overthrew it.
- 1:48:23Now it's third down and perhaps the biggest third down that Landry will face here this afternoon with 9.24 to go.
- 1:48:30He's 8 out of 17 with one interception for 116 yards, and he needs a long one here.
- 1:48:38He's 5 out of 10 on the third down situation, batting 500.
- 1:48:43Both set, Owens is back in.
- 1:48:46Crippa's up there and they've brought that play in.
- 1:48:49Landry going back to the floor, staying in that pocket again.
- 1:48:52He's going to be brought down way back on the 21-yard line.
- 1:48:55That fast coverage out there for him is just gulp down.
- 1:48:59Willie Holman brought him down on the 21-yard line.
- 1:49:02Now that's the difference here as the things turned around a little bit, Van,
- 1:49:05as you had been pointing out all during the ballgame that the pressure has been on from that fair defense.
- 1:49:12And if you don't have the time to throw, there isn't much you can do about it.
- 1:49:16You're just getting the lines.
- 1:49:17You're just getting beat at the line, in the pit, as they say, where the battles are won and lost.
- 1:49:23And right now, Weaver needs a good foot, or the Bears again will have fine field position with 9.7 to go
- 1:49:30and interception of the football.
- 1:49:32Grip is deep for Chicago.
- 1:49:36Herman Weaver's waiting on the 5.
- 1:49:40Almost blocked, but he's got a beautiful kick away.
- 1:49:43Ooh, look at this, all the way to the 23-yard line, Grip going wide.
- 1:49:48Trying to get some running room.
- 1:49:51He's finally brought down by Mickey Zopto, and a flag is down.
- 1:49:57Clipping on the play.
- 1:49:5856 yards on that kick by Herman Weaver when he needed it.
- 1:50:0256 yards.
- 1:50:05There'll be a clip.
- 1:50:10He'll walk off against the Bears.
- 1:50:12Got to move him back into a little trouble with 8.42 to go.
- 1:50:16All the way back to the 14-yard line.
- 1:50:19That's the seventh penalty, 86 yards.
- 1:50:2415 all together between these two clubs here today.
- 1:50:28We're getting a timeout.
- 1:50:3112 o'clock is stepped on the field, and the score, the Bears 28, the Lions 23.
- 1:50:39Ball on the 14-yard line of Chicago, first and 10 for the Bears.
- 1:50:43Farmer to the right side, Gordon to the left side.
- 1:50:47Chai and Grobowski are the running backs for Chicago, and Bobby Douglas gives it to Chai.
- 1:50:53Chai's hit it for 15, no game, no anybody got a yard.
- 1:50:56Paul Newboff made the tackle.
- 1:50:58Joe Laff was also in there.
- 1:51:00Bobby Bell is in there for Detroit.
- 1:51:02He's been playing most of his last half.
- 1:51:04And now Cyril Fender is coming into the backfield for Chicago and lepping off a little of Chai.
- 1:51:10Took a little skip there, but I guess he's all right.
- 1:51:13He's a great backhand.
- 1:51:15What do you know?
- 1:51:16They came up with a big win yesterday, not got Purdue.
- 1:51:20And then James was upset, huh?
- 1:51:22I thought you mentioned that.
- 1:51:2428 to 14.
- 1:51:28Michigan with another big win today.
- 1:51:30Farmer and Gordon are split.
- 1:51:33Waiting now is Bobby Douglas.
- 1:51:35Got second in line, and back he goes to grow.
- 1:51:38He's doing well, doctor.
- 1:51:40And he grows it quickly.
- 1:51:42That's a 15-yard line, did you believe that?
- 1:51:45The Packers stayed on the 20.
- 1:51:47They had him finally cross back on about the 3-yard line.
- 1:51:51Unbelievable.
- 1:51:53Unbelievable.
- 1:51:54That was really about the third time all afternoon that the Lions had some pressure on Douglas.
- 1:51:59He got away from it, however, they had him way back there at the 3-yard line.
- 1:52:04Finally found the receiver, Fender, and got the ball to him up on the 20.
- 1:52:08And now it is third down and about four to go for the first down here with the class running and showing 7-21.
- 1:52:17And Douglas is a strong kid.
- 1:52:21Third down, about four from the 20.
- 1:52:25Big play right here.
- 1:52:27Seven minutes to go.
- 1:52:30Fender, a double-wing formation now.
- 1:52:34Bobby Douglas, with Gordon set out the right side, he's going back to grow.
- 1:52:38He grows one, it's complete.
- 1:52:39First down, Chicago.
- 1:52:41Completed to Gordon in the right flat.
- 1:52:43Weger made the tackle with first.
- 1:52:45And he came up with a big, big play right there, getting a first down.
- 1:52:50And so that's 16 first down for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:52:54Fender is on the 28-yard line.
- 1:52:57Six minutes, 30 seconds to play.
- 1:53:00That's all the Lions need to get their hands on the football.
- 1:53:03They're trailing 28 to 23, and the field goal will do no good.
- 1:53:08Five points down.
- 1:53:09Any question about it when they start discussing key plays in this ball game, it will be Douglas is wiggling out of that one,
- 1:53:15completing the fast defender and then throwing the short one out in the flat for the first down.
- 1:53:21High formation to give as the Fender.
- 1:53:24Fender's hit right up the 30-yard line.
- 1:53:26He got a couple of yards.
- 1:53:29Fox continues to move, and it's important now.
- 1:53:32Lucci made the tackle for Detroit, along with Larry Han.
- 1:53:36Bob, I want to thank Jerry Brusser, who was kind enough to come down to South Bend and pick us up last night
- 1:53:42and get us back here in time for a big ceremonial lay-up for a good friend of yours and mine,
- 1:53:47so the pro golfer at the Dearborn Country Club.
- 1:53:53Ball on the 30-yard line.
- 1:53:55Second down, eight yards to go for the Bears, 5.40 to play.
- 1:54:00Bears lead 28-23.
- 1:54:03Jordan to the right side.
- 1:54:05Here's Douglas.
- 1:54:06Back to throw.
- 1:54:07He's in a little trouble.
- 1:54:08He looks and he throws.
- 1:54:09They finally get to it, back on the 24-yard line.
- 1:54:12First time.
- 1:54:14Are you almost public?
- 1:54:16That's the first time that the Lions have been able to get to Douglas all day.
- 1:54:22If you don't count the one three or four plays ago when they had him hemmed in down there,
- 1:54:26that he got out of it.
- 1:54:27That time he got hit from the blind side, nearly dropped the ball, fell around to it.
- 1:54:31However, the Lions finally got to it.
- 1:54:33That's the 24, so it brings up that big third down play again with five minutes and 24 seconds in the clock running.
- 1:54:41This is a big play right here, I'll tell you.
- 1:54:45Well, the Bears are talking over the huddle.
- 1:54:47One of the biggest plays they'll call all day right here.
- 1:54:51Jordan to the right side.
- 1:54:53Farmer to the left side.
- 1:54:55Bobby Douglas in an eye formation.
- 1:54:58And he's going to run it from the eye, or call the play, and he pitches it out here to Fender who goes wide.
- 1:55:04Fender's caught at the 26-yard line.
- 1:55:08And all down there, making the tackle with Mike Lucey, and he can hardly get up,
- 1:55:13and what a ballgame he has played.
- 1:55:15He's playing with injuries.
- 1:55:17Looks like he might have that shoulder bruised again.
- 1:55:20Ball on the 26-yard line is four down and 12 yards to go.
- 1:55:25And Chuck Hughes and Al Parker back there for the score.
- 1:55:29Now the clock with four minutes and 30 seconds in movement.
- 1:55:33And the Bears lead it 28 to 23.
- 1:55:36So if you're driving your automobile, drive carefully right now.
- 1:55:40Hang on.
- 1:55:41That's right.
- 1:55:43Pass them center to green.
- 1:55:45He gets a short kick, but he comes around the 45 and gets a good bounce for him, though.
- 1:55:50He got a short kick, but if you look at the bounce he gets, a tremendous bounce all the way down to the 25-yard line.
- 1:55:57A wobbling, swift type of kick, and he's got 49 yards out of it.
- 1:56:02That's your drop shot to get a good roll in your L.O., is it?
- 1:56:06And what happens on that artificial turf, too, Van, is when you hit a line drive front,
- 1:56:12maybe about 20 yards and then you just boom right out of there.
- 1:56:16For Christopher, 16, St. Louis, 14 now on the fourth quarter.
- 1:56:23While we have the opportunity here, let's let the stations around the network identify themselves.
- 1:56:32Fifteen seconds for station identification.
- 1:56:34This is the Detroit Lions football network.
- 1:56:41Landry is 8 out of 17 for 104 yards, and he's got it what cut out now.
- 1:56:47He's 75 yards away.
- 1:56:49The 25-yard line, four minutes and nine seconds to play.
- 1:56:54Hughes is in there and flank to the left, McCullough to the right.
- 1:56:59Greg Landry going back to throw, stays in the pocket, throws one, two,
- 1:57:05hole into the 30, and he's tackled in a hard, jarring tackle by Smith.
- 1:57:10Long Smith, ball to the right of the 30-yard line.
- 1:57:13The clock is still running, and that clock is a big factor now, 28 to 23.
- 1:57:19McCullough has gone deep.
- 1:57:20He's just now getting back to the huddle with second and five for Detroit from their own 30.
- 1:57:28And now Hughes goes to the right, McCullough to the left.
- 1:57:32Greg Landry looking over that defense.
- 1:57:36Buccus and Bappone, those linebackers, jammed in there, waiting for it.
- 1:57:41It's Landry going back again to throw.
- 1:57:43He's in a little trouble.
- 1:57:44He throws, and it is incomplete.
- 1:57:47He hits Charlie Sanders, and Buccus was right there with him,
- 1:57:49but it's a glancing pass and a bounce right away from him.
- 1:57:55And so that will make it third down and five yards to go for the Detroit Lions
- 1:57:59with three minutes and 24 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 1:58:04And the Bears are leading it 28 to 23.
- 1:58:07Eddie O'Grado is breathing right down the throat of Landry that time.
- 1:58:12At the last second, he's prodded Sanders.
- 1:58:14Buccus is covering on the play, and it goes incomplete.
- 1:58:19San Francisco leads St. Louis 23 to 14.
- 1:58:24Landry with three pointers, going back to throw again.
- 1:58:28He throws one deep for McCullough.
- 1:58:30The footbreak is on, and it is very deceptive by the Chicago Bears.
- 1:58:35Intercepted at the 32-yard line by the Bears in terms of the color.
- 1:58:40So the Bears now have a great shot at them.
- 1:58:44I'm trying to get that number.
- 1:58:45It's covered with mud.
- 1:58:5129, Jeter is the man who intercepted the pass.
- 1:58:56Second interception, and the Bears are in business now, Bob.
- 1:59:02I'm just thinking about Jeter out there, and that's his first interception of the year.
- 1:59:07Comes at a very opportune time, of course, for the Chicago Bears,
- 1:59:10who now have three minutes and five seconds to kill here
- 1:59:13with a ball at their own 31 and leading 28-23.
- 1:59:17I wouldn't be surprised if he dug this with a little ball control now, for sure,
- 1:59:21with 255 showing right now.
- 1:59:24But he gives it off to Pender, and Pender runs out wide at the 40, the 45, the 50, the 45, the 40, the 35,
- 1:59:31and he's finally out of bounds.
- 1:59:33Down on the 32-yard line.
- 1:59:37Finally got out of bounds on the 32-yard line, a 37-yard run.
- 1:59:41They mark it on the 31 first down.
- 1:59:45And the Bears are now in field goal position.
- 1:59:48There's nothing else.
- 1:59:5117, first down.
- 1:59:58First and 10 from the 31-yard line.
- 2:00:02Farmer to the right side, Gordon to the left side.
- 2:00:0728-23, Chicago.
- 2:00:10Bobby Douglas calling the signals.
- 2:00:12Douglas on the give now to his running back, Pender, and he's dumped on the 32-yard line.
- 2:00:17And Joe Roth made the tackle along with Paul Newmont.
- 2:00:21So he lost the yard on the play.
- 2:00:24It'll be second down and 11 yards to go.
- 2:00:26Dallas leading 37-7.
- 2:00:28We're coming up to the two-minute mark. It's 2-20 to go.
- 2:00:34Wallace is in now, tight end, replacing Thomas.
- 2:00:38The Lions are on the verge now of their second defeat of the season.
- 2:00:42They're trailing five points here with two minutes and ten seconds play.
- 2:00:47And the Bears left the football, which is the big item.
- 2:00:50Farmer to the right, Gordon to the left. It's second down and 11.
- 2:00:54Douglas taking a lot of time, and he gives it off now to Pender.
- 2:00:58And Pender is up the nice 29-yard line.
- 2:01:02And there's the two-minute warning.
- 2:01:04So the clock is stopped on the field with the score of Chicago 28, Detroit 23.
- 2:01:09Ready to go now with the ball on the 29-yard line.
- 2:01:16It's third down and eight yards to go for the Chicago Bears with two minutes of playing time remaining.
- 2:01:22Bears lead at 28-23.
- 2:01:26Farmer to the right, to the left, Leather, and Gordon to the right.
- 2:01:31Pender and Drabowski to setback.
- 2:01:34Douglas with a third and eight.
- 2:01:36Douglas rolling out to the right.
- 2:01:38Let's roll to the end zone, and everyone is out of the lead to go.
- 2:01:42Mark was beaten on the play, but the pass was overthrown.
- 2:01:48Well, that means Percival now will get a chance to stack on three more here.
- 2:01:53It would make it 31, and it would make it 31-23.
- 2:01:58Which means then the Lions, even if they scored seven, will still be short.
- 2:02:04Field goal here was just about put it out of reach.
- 2:02:10And that's got to be the understatement.
- 2:02:13Oakland is leading Cincinnati 3-0, and Washington leads Kansas 37-0.
- 2:02:20The attempt will be made from the 36-yard line, an angle to the left of the hash mark.
- 2:02:25The kicker is in the air.
- 2:02:28It's not directed, but it looks like it's off the way, and it's no good.
- 2:02:31The Lions have a shot.
- 2:02:33It's no good, but the Lions have a shot at it now.
- 2:02:41They have the ball on their own 20.
- 2:02:43They have a minute and 46 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 2:02:47Ready to go back a few years, man, and you say, here's the body-align situation.
- 2:02:56Time running out, 80 yards away.
- 2:02:59We'll see whether the Lions offensive line can hold them out of there to give Greg time to throw,
- 2:03:05because that's what he needs.
- 2:03:07He goes to the right, to the left, with McCullough, and Landry is going back to throw.
- 2:03:10Stays in that pocket and throws one to Sanders.
- 2:03:13He's got it up the 32-yard line, first down the court.
- 2:03:17At the 32, first made the tackle.
- 2:03:19A minute and 38 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 2:03:23But you've got to remember this now.
- 2:03:26That clock is a big, big factor with only a minute and 38, and Landry calling the time out.
- 2:03:32The Lions have two timeouts remaining.
- 2:03:35They've got to try to conserve as much of that time as they possibly can to try and pull it out here at Piper Stadium.
- 2:03:42Not many of these fans are left on the 32-yard line, first down and then to go.
- 2:03:48Landry needs to come up with his big play right now.
- 2:03:58This is not a typical Chicago dismal ball game.
- 2:04:03A rough, tough affair.
- 2:04:06You take a physical beating every time you play those mad monsters from the midway in the Chicago Bears.
- 2:04:22Right to the left side is Hughes, McCullough to the right.
- 2:04:25Double wing formation, Landry is back to throw.
- 2:04:28The rush is on. He throws the Hughes at the finish.
- 2:04:31He's down to the 36-yard line.
- 2:04:34And Jair Lyle made the tackle and Chuck Hughes pulled it in on the 37-yard line.
- 2:04:40It's first down to court, and this stadium is in the bedlam.
- 2:04:43The clock is moving. Landry asking for quiet.
- 2:04:47And now the official timeout. That was a 31-yard game.
- 2:04:52The officials call timeout because the Bears were taking their time getting up there.
- 2:04:56Now Landry's going into it real quick.
- 2:04:58Landry back to throw. Throws one out of bounds to stop the clock.
- 2:05:02Now you've got to set up a play with one minute and 12 seconds.
- 2:05:06Would you call this the cliffhanger?
- 2:05:09Yeah, by a bird.
- 2:05:12What arrows you ought to put to it.
- 2:05:16The way it is seemingly at least every Sunday.
- 2:05:19Now Ryan Loss here today with dropping them back into second place in that tight central division range with the Chicago Bears.
- 2:05:26And we have some of that Minnesota Baltimore game tomorrow night.
- 2:05:32And to reaffirm what we were talking about earlier, man, I definitely will be pulling some Baltimore.
- 2:05:38Hughes wide to the right. The left side now is McCullough.
- 2:05:43One minute and 12 seconds to go in the ballgame.
- 2:05:46First down on the 37-yard line of Chicago.
- 2:05:49And most of now goes Taylor.
- 2:05:51Landry is going back to throw.
- 2:05:53He looks, he throws the throw and there's got to.
- 2:05:56Butkus has been hit.
- 2:05:58Butkus was belted by Butkus just as he caught the football.
- 2:06:02Now that makes the great Butkus play of course.
- 2:06:05And there he is, the big man and the big shot.
- 2:06:09In a very, very key play because I doubt that very much.
- 2:06:13If it had been anybody else but Butkus, but what Sanders would have held onto that one.
- 2:06:18But Butkus was right there where he belonged covering on the play.
- 2:06:21And when Sanders caught the ball, he fell at him and knocked the ball loose from him.
- 2:06:25So the clock now shows a minute and six.
- 2:06:28And the Bears now are calling time out.
- 2:06:31As Butkus goes over to the sideline to talk to Jim Dooley and Abe Gibran, who is his defensive coach.
- 2:06:38Landry going over the sidelines along with Bill Triplett as Steve Owens comes into the lineup now.
- 2:06:45And with a minute and six showing third down, 10 to go, the ball up the 37 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 2:06:53The drama and the tension continues to build here in the closing moments of this one.
- 2:07:03Now Bill Triplett is coming down.
- 2:07:05So it might be they might try to play a while ago.
- 2:07:08They almost got away with it.
- 2:07:09They threw the Triplett down the middle when Landry's vision was shaken a little as he was hit just as he delivered the ball.
- 2:07:16Butkus went over there to talk to Abe Gibran, the defensive coach.
- 2:07:19And the ball is on the 37th, third down and 10 to go for Detroit.
- 2:07:23That one and Landry over talking with Coach Smith along the sidelines.
- 2:07:28And so the Lions have Triplett in there.
- 2:07:31So let's see what they do.
- 2:07:32They might try to.
- 2:07:34What thing has he gone out? Taylor Owens went there so he went right back out again.
- 2:07:39So now let's see what they do.
- 2:07:43Gettin' them into a double win.
- 2:07:44Waiting for it is Landry and he's going back to throw.
- 2:07:47He goes to say Owens but oh his hands are thanded.
- 2:07:52Right through standards here.
- 2:07:56That's a little unusual.
- 2:07:57A lion hurt down there at the 16 yard line.
- 2:07:59He just collapsed and fell.
- 2:08:02So we'll have to wait and see.
- 2:08:04Sometimes that will stop the class for an injury.
- 2:08:09And Dr. Guise comes in along with Dr. Thompson to have a look at him.
- 2:08:14I wouldn't be surprised then either that if Charlie Sanders hadn't taken a pretty good knock on the previous play to that.
- 2:08:21And he might have been still a little shaken up when Landry drilled that one to him because it just went right through his hands.
- 2:08:28And his reaction just a slight but total blow of poor Charlie.
- 2:08:33And you have to think that he probably got a good wrap when Buck just hit him before.
- 2:08:38I can't see who the injured player is.
- 2:08:40It's you, is there, Bob.
- 2:08:41It's you, is there, Bob.
- 2:08:42It's up to you.
- 2:08:43You caught a big pass there a moment ago.
- 2:08:46Drippert is in there now bringing it a play to Landry.
- 2:08:51I didn't see what happened to you.
- 2:08:53I just saw him fall and just sort of like he collapsed.
- 2:08:58And he seems to be in a considerable amount of pain down there at the 16-yard line.
- 2:09:03We've got a minute and two seconds left in this one here.
- 2:09:08And they're treating Mr. Hughes pretty gingerly down there.
- 2:09:16Landry goes over to talk to Monson along the sidelines.
- 2:09:21With a minute and two seconds of playing time remaining in this ballgame,
- 2:09:24it is Chicago 28 and Detroit 23.
- 2:09:28The Millions have four and ten.
- 2:09:33So this is it.
- 2:09:35They're getting all righty right here.
- 2:09:39Dallas leads New England now 37-7.
- 2:09:43And San Francisco leading St. Louis 23-14.
- 2:09:46Los Angeles leading Green Bay 7-0.
- 2:09:49And Washington 7-7, Kansas City nothing in the first quarter.
- 2:09:52And Oakland leading Cincinnati 3-0 in the first quarter.
- 2:09:55Man, I don't like the looks of this injury down here at all.
- 2:10:00It appears that Chuck is really hurt.
- 2:10:09Well, we've got both trainers and both doctors out there.
- 2:10:11They may go for the stretchers.
- 2:10:14They haven't put it out yet.
- 2:10:16They're in a hush crowd here at Tiger Stadium right now.
- 2:10:26And they're still working on Hughes down around the 15-yard line.
- 2:10:29As Bob mentioned, I didn't see what happened to him.
- 2:10:32He just went down right on the 15 in the heat.
- 2:10:38Well, it's just up to Dave Pittsburgh, 23, Houston 16.
- 2:10:42That's the final now.
- 2:10:43Miami 30, New York Jets 14, Denver beat Cleveland 27-0.
- 2:10:48Final scores in Atlanta beat New Orleans 28-6.
- 2:10:52Philadelphia won their first game, 23-7 over New York.
- 2:10:55Man, there's no point, of course, to speculating on the injury,
- 2:10:58but I think they're going to call the stretcher on some oxygen here.
- 2:11:02It could be a neck injury.
- 2:11:07I just don't like the look of it at all.
- 2:11:31They're bringing the stretcher out now from the sideline.
- 2:11:37They administered oxygen to him, and I think it's a neck injury.
- 2:11:42I'm all more positive of it now.
- 2:11:44I see Dr. Thompson and Dr. Guise assigned to get something back in shape there.
- 2:11:55That doesn't look good at the moment, that's for sure.
- 2:12:25You know, the funny thing about it, Bob, he caught that pass a moment ago,
- 2:12:28and he might have been shaken up on that particular play,
- 2:12:32and then Fred Snowden who's sitting here in our booth said that he was watching him,
- 2:12:40and he said that he was downfield running the pass pattern,
- 2:12:44then turned around and started back to the huddle as when he collapsed,
- 2:12:47but he was nearly, so he might have been hit on the way prior to that.
- 2:12:52They are administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Hughes,
- 2:12:55and Dr. Guise is now pumping his chest.
- 2:13:01We may have a real serious one down here.
- 2:13:04I certainly hope not, but this young man is in serious trouble,
- 2:13:09and they are going to rush him off of there.
- 2:13:13When you have to restore to pumping the chest and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,
- 2:13:18you've got a serious injury.
- 2:13:21Everybody here in the stadium, all 54,000, hushed over this injury to Hughes.
- 2:13:30Now they are taking him off in a big hurry.
- 2:13:34I just don't like the looks of it at all.
- 2:13:38That's a shame.
- 2:13:41That casts a fall, of course, on this entire stadium here.
- 2:13:46We can only hope we'll get the word to you as soon as we find out
- 2:13:49just exactly what it is.
- 2:13:51We're back into the action with a minute and two seconds left to play.
- 2:13:57And it's 4th down and 10 for Detroit with a minute and two
- 2:14:00as Landry is going back to throw.
- 2:14:02He looks, he throws deep out here, and this one is tipped in the air, incomplete,
- 2:14:06and so the Bears will take over with a march down.
- 2:14:09So that was the play of the center for Taylor,
- 2:14:12and that was the big play right there.
- 2:14:15The Lions need it.
- 2:14:17And so the Bears leading by a score of 28 to 23 have the football
- 2:14:21on their own 37-yard line.
- 2:14:23They have it 4th down and 10 to go,
- 2:14:25and all they've got to do now is run out the clock,
- 2:14:27and they've had the Lions their second defeat of the season.
- 2:14:31Bobby Douglas.
- 2:14:39Now he'll try to run out that clock,
- 2:14:41and he's only got 56 seconds to run it out.
- 2:14:48Farmer has split out the right side.
- 2:14:50Gordon is deploying to the left.
- 2:14:56Douglas on the call.
- 2:14:57I don't imagine he'll try to do much with it.
- 2:14:59He just gives it off to Fender, who's tackled by Joel Robb,
- 2:15:02and the Lions will utilize their timeouts now to stop the clock.
- 2:15:07He lost a little yardage on that one,
- 2:15:09but they're not concerned about that.
- 2:15:12All they want to do is hold onto the ball and run out the clock.
- 2:15:16I went back, man, into the front box,
- 2:15:20and very concerned, Russ Thomas was making his way
- 2:15:24hurriedly through the dressing room.
- 2:15:25I asked him if he knew, and he just shook his head.
- 2:15:27We don't know, even if it's Miles Smith,
- 2:15:29obviously a very serious injury.
- 2:15:32Let's hope the young man is all right.
- 2:15:34You know, it almost had to be on the play of the players
- 2:15:36when he caught the pass,
- 2:15:37because nobody hit him out there when he was running the ball.
- 2:15:39He seemed to collapse.
- 2:15:44Gordon to the left side.
- 2:15:46Douglas, get him back to me.
- 2:15:48He's running that clock out,
- 2:15:51and he moves into the 38-yard line,
- 2:15:53and the Lions will utilize their timeout again to stop the clock.
- 2:15:58Although the clock has stopped now,
- 2:15:59they're evidently out of timeout,
- 2:16:00although the board chose to, but they are out of time.
- 2:16:04They are out of timeout.
- 2:16:06So the Bears now will just kill as much of it as they can,
- 2:16:10and they are going to take all the time they possibly can.
- 2:16:13Twenty-five seconds, and the clock is moving.
- 2:16:15The Lions are out of timeout.
- 2:16:17Chicago will be four and two.
- 2:16:19The Lions will be four and two.
- 2:16:21Minnesota four and one, the conference,
- 2:16:23depending upon the outcome of that game tomorrow night.
- 2:16:30Well, there's the quarterback's feet again,
- 2:16:32and time will run out now.
- 2:16:33They'll never get another play on the left.
- 2:16:35Clock is moving.
- 2:16:36Three seconds, two seconds, one second,
- 2:16:38and there is the gun.
- 2:16:40And the final score, the Chicago Bears 28 to the Tribe Lions 23.
- 2:16:45There's the game.
