• 0:51
Speaker 1: come up here, Dougie, come around, come around you thinking
• 0:55
Speaker 1: about it? He's very thoughtful, Douggie comet. He only does
• 0:58
Speaker 1: what he wants to do.
• 0:59
Speaker 3: I love like on camera he just looks like a
• 1:01
Speaker 3: void moving through the rook.
• 1:03
Speaker 1: There he is that's my baby, who's my beautiful baby.
• 1:11
Speaker 4: He did get black again, like I know you had
• 1:13
Speaker 4: said it. He turned brown and now he's I feel
• 1:17
Speaker 4: that he's black again.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: Down yeah, good, down, good boy.
• 1:23
Speaker 4: And Weddy, lets you snuggle him, even though he doesn't
• 1:25
  Speaker 4: snuggle at night.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: I know. But he's getting better. He understands that there's
• 1:30
Speaker 1: a price to pay if he doesn't give me what
• 1:32
  Speaker 1: I want.
• 1:33
Speaker 3: Chelsea, let's talk about books.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: Okay, I've read a few, a bunch of books lately.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: I have some good book recommendations.
• 1:39
Speaker 3: Okay, do you want to start? Do you want to sure?
• 1:42
  Speaker 1: Sure? Yeah?
• 1:42
  Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay.
• 1:43
Speaker 4: Well, one that I have been reading that I just
• 1:46
Speaker 4: read recently that I super duper loved.
• 1:50
Speaker 3: I realized, like the three that I.
• 1:51
Speaker 4: Thought to talk about today are all set deep in
• 1:53
Speaker 4: the woods. This first one I think that you would
• 1:55
Speaker 4: actually really really love.
• 1:57
  Speaker 3: It's fiction.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: There's like a tiny bit of magical realism in it,
• 2:01
  Speaker 4: but not a.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: Ton, not not a ton.
• 2:04
Speaker 3: But it is called in there, it's called north Woods.
• 2:08
Speaker 4: It's by Daniel Mason, and it's all set in New
• 2:11
Speaker 4: England at this house that's built like sort of maybe
• 2:15
Speaker 4: in the seventeen hundreds and it's the history of this
• 2:17
Speaker 4: house and all the different people who live there throughout
• 2:20
Speaker 4: the like decades and generations. It's really cool. I really
• 2:25
Speaker 4: really loved it. It's beautifully written. It kind of like
• 2:28
Speaker 4: moves along pretty quickly. I really liked it.
• 2:30
Speaker 3: Okay, do you have.
• 2:32
Speaker 4: Fitness and wellness questions? Well, Chelsea's personal trainer Ben Bruno
• 2:36
Speaker 4: is about to guest on an episode, So right into
• 2:38
Speaker 4: Dear Chelsea podcast at gmail dot com with all your
• 2:40
Speaker 4: fitness and wellness questions.
• 2:46
  Speaker 1: What else?
• 2:47
Speaker 4: You got a couple other ones that I really loved.
• 2:49
Speaker 4: I just finished one called The Cold Vanish.
• 2:51
  Speaker 3: It's by Yeah.
• 2:53
Speaker 1: These a sound like they take place in the.
• 2:55
Speaker 3: Ely they're all in the woods.
• 2:56
Speaker 4: I think I need to like go be in the woods,
• 2:58
Speaker 4: like I think I'm finding, like think I need to
• 3:00
Speaker 4: be I need to go maybe not camping.
• 3:03
Speaker 3: I need to go to like a beautiful place.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Yeah. It's on a lake maybe Yeah yeah, yeah, I
• 3:06
Speaker 1: think with lots of trails. Yes, then you can see
• 3:09
Speaker 1: the before they see you.
• 3:11
Speaker 3: Yeah. This is called The Cold Vanish. It's by John Billman.
• 3:15
Speaker 4: And this if, like anybody likes true crime, it's perfect
• 3:18
Speaker 4: for that because it's a journalist who has written a
• 3:21
Speaker 4: ton of stuff for Outside magazine, and he follows like
• 3:23
Speaker 4: a bunch of these cases of missing persons in America's
• 3:27
Speaker 4: national parks, and he specifically works with some of the
• 3:30
Speaker 4: families to try and like find their loved ones.
• 3:32
Speaker 3: Or like as they search.
• 3:33
Speaker 4: And it's just really beautiful storytelling all true stories.
• 3:37
Speaker 3: And I really liked that.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: And then is it descriptive?
• 3:42
Speaker 4: Yes, That's what surprised me the most is I expected
• 3:45
Speaker 4: it to be a little bit drier, but it's very
• 3:49
Speaker 4: The writing is very evocative. It's it's beautiful writing, and
• 3:52
Speaker 4: it's interesting writing. And his turns of phrase are always
• 3:55
Speaker 4: kind of surprising, and I really like when a writer
• 3:57
  Speaker 4: does that.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 3:59
Speaker 4: And then the third one that I have to recommend
• 4:02
Speaker 4: is called The Stranger.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: In the Woods, God We're just in the woods.
• 4:06
Speaker 4: It's called this The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit,
• 4:10
Speaker 4: and it's by Michael Finkel. I listened to this one
• 4:12
Speaker 4: in the book on tape, which I would recommend.
• 4:14
  Speaker 3: We call that.
• 4:15
Speaker 4: Audiobooks now, but I would recommend it because the person
• 4:19
Speaker 4: in question, the hermit in question, does have this sort
• 4:20
Speaker 4: of manor accent, and it's nonfiction, so It's all about
• 4:24
Speaker 4: this guy who just like in the eighties, like wandered
• 4:27
Speaker 4: off into the woods and then just lived there for
• 4:30
Speaker 4: like twenty five years and would go into people's cabins
• 4:34
Speaker 4: in the wintertime like take stuff, but like not too much,
• 4:37
Speaker 4: and he was always very respectful. But he was like
• 4:39
Speaker 4: like they knew there was a hermit out there who
• 4:42
Speaker 4: was just like the man in the woods.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: And so eventually things come.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: To let people go and live in the woods, and
• 4:47
Speaker 1: that's either me, how does it? And then what happens
• 4:50
Speaker 1: the next day? What are they eating branches?
• 4:52
  Speaker 2: Like?
• 4:52
Speaker 1: What are they killing rabbits? Like?
• 4:54
Speaker 4: What are He like learned how to exist in the
• 4:57
Speaker 4: woods in such a secretive way that he could like
• 4:59
Speaker 4: not leave footprints. He was basically like really close to
• 5:03
Speaker 4: all these different houses and cabins and stuff, but like
• 5:05
Speaker 4: no one really knew where he was. No one ever
• 5:07
Speaker 4: found his camp. He never talked to anybody. So he
• 5:11
Speaker 4: was like a person who really truly just wanted.
• 5:13
Speaker 1: To be alone, to be alone in the woods. Yeah,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: the exact opposite. Yeah, I like the alone part, but
• 5:17
Speaker 1: not the woods part. Right, I don't want to be
• 5:20
Speaker 1: alone in the woods. I actually want a.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: Guide, a Guide out of the Woods.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: Okay, I just read. I've read three books. I read well.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: The first one is called The Correspondent, which has been
• 5:31
Speaker 1: going around. Yes, that's the one Jane Fonda signed on
• 5:34
Speaker 1: to do. It's written by Virginia Evans, and that is
• 5:38
Speaker 1: a real page. Have you read that yet?
• 5:40
  Speaker 4: No?
• 5:40
  Speaker 3: I haven't. Okay, she's writing letters.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a pistolary. Actually, that's the style of writing,
• 5:45
Speaker 1: which is letter writing.
• 5:46
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: I learned that because I saw Mindy Kaling on a
• 5:48
Speaker 1: podcast talking about it on a clip on Instagram and
• 5:52
Speaker 1: she was saying her favorite They said, what's your favorite
• 5:54
Speaker 1: type of writing? And she wrote a pistolary. That's when
• 5:56
Speaker 1: they write letters. I had no idea what that word meant.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: So I was like, wow, like that. You know how
• 6:00
Speaker 1: I love learning words. So epistolaria, Yes, so that This
• 6:04
Speaker 1: book is all about this woman and her letters to
• 6:06
Speaker 1: people and their letters back to her family members, love interests, children,
• 6:11
Speaker 1: family friends. And she's an older woman and she's got
• 6:14
Speaker 1: a lot of kutzpah, and she's got a lot of opinions,
• 6:16
Speaker 1: and she's she's got her nose in a lot of
• 6:18
  Speaker 1: people's business. I like it so I like that she's
• 6:21
Speaker 1: very much an interloper. Okay, so I identify is.
• 6:24
Speaker 3: It modern day? Is that modern day?
• 6:26
Speaker 1: Yes? It is? Oh, that's contemporary. And then this book
• 6:29
Speaker 1: my friend Juliana, she sends me all my books, Juliana
• 6:32
Speaker 1: Marguley's Life and Death and Giants by Ron Rindo. So
• 6:35
Speaker 1: this is a novel, this takes place. I don't want
• 6:38
Speaker 1: to give anything away, but this book is. This is
• 6:40
Speaker 1: what I love about books is I want to be
• 6:43
Speaker 1: introduced to things I know nothing about. And I don't
• 6:46
Speaker 1: want to only read things that are of interest to me.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: I like to read things that have nothing to do
• 6:51
Speaker 1: with me or nothing to do with any of my interests.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: This book has nothing to do with There's Amish people,
• 6:59
Speaker 1: there's farm life. There's a giant okay in the book.
• 7:03
Speaker 4: Oh wait, is this kind of about the giant that
• 7:07
Speaker 4: they found in that field? The quote unquote giant, I
• 7:10
Speaker 4: forget what it's called.
• 7:11
Speaker 1: And he was a wrestler he became it's like loosely
• 7:14
Speaker 1: based on a true story about this kid who sprang
• 7:17
Speaker 1: to become a giant and became a wrestler, like he
• 7:22
Speaker 1: was a professional wrestler. Anyway, he lives this crazy life
• 7:26
Speaker 1: because of his size and because of his strength, and
• 7:28
Speaker 1: because of his power and his physical strength and his power,
• 7:32
Speaker 1: and so he just ends up living this kind of
• 7:36
Speaker 1: crazy life. But he was born to this amish mother.
• 7:40
  Speaker 1: And then it's it's just like a world that I
• 7:44
Speaker 1: would never delve into. So in complete honesty, I it's
• 7:49
Speaker 1: not a book that I was like, oh my god,
• 7:51
Speaker 1: I've got to rip the pages open. But like the correspondent,
• 7:55
Speaker 1: I was like, I tore through that in three days.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: This took me a little bit longer. But I do
• 7:59
Speaker 1: really appreciate she ate being exposed to the things in
• 8:03
Speaker 1: life that I'm not that interested in.
• 8:05
  Speaker 3: You like naturally.
• 8:10
Speaker 1: And now this next book is called Kin by Tyri Jones.
• 8:14
Speaker 1: This is one of Oprah's book clubs. Oprah has the
• 8:17
Speaker 1: best books. She has always mary the best grades because
• 8:19
Speaker 1: they're deep, they're meaningful. And this is about two young
• 8:21
Speaker 1: girls who grew up in Louisiana. They both are motherless
• 8:25
Speaker 1: and they kind of go off in different directions. The
• 8:27
Speaker 1: one goes to college in Atlanta at Spellman and this
• 8:30
Speaker 1: other girl goes on and lives in Mississippi for a while.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: Then she moves to Tennessee anyway, these two girls just
• 8:36
Speaker 1: kind of diverge and then their lives kind of come
• 8:39
Speaker 1: back together, and you see the different shapes their lives
• 8:41
Speaker 1: have taken. This took a while for me to get into.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: It took me about like one hundred pages and then
• 8:47
Speaker 1: I was in. And there are some turns of phrase
• 8:50
Speaker 1: in here that I mean, there's a chapter in here
• 8:51
Speaker 1: that had me hysterically crying. When I went to bed
• 8:54
Speaker 1: the other night, I just was bawling. It was so
• 8:56
Speaker 1: beautifully written, and it's so profound and me and just
• 9:02
Speaker 1: this relationship and this girl's bond that they had because
• 9:06
Speaker 1: they were cradle sisters they call it, well they really were.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: They like you know, they were in the crib together,
• 9:12
Speaker 1: and just their bond and like the bond between women
• 9:16
Speaker 1: that go through life together and then kind of keep
• 9:19
Speaker 1: showing up for each other at all of the different
• 9:22
Speaker 1: turns that you can show up for each other was
• 9:25
Speaker 1: really moving. And their dedication and devotion to each other
• 9:28
Speaker 1: was really moving and powerful. And the writing is beautiful there.
• 9:31
  Speaker 1: So I mean I wrote down I underlined a bunch
• 9:33
Speaker 1: in the book because there was just such beautiful writing.
• 9:35
Speaker 1: But of course I didn't earmark any of the pages,
• 9:37
Speaker 1: so I'd have to go through it, but it's definitely
• 9:39
Speaker 1: worth reading. It's called Kin and Something. That's one of
• 9:42
Speaker 1: Oprah's books. Yeah, So those are three books I've read
• 9:44
Speaker 1: in the last couple of weeks.
• 9:45
  Speaker 3: Awesome, excellent.
• 9:48
Speaker 1: The word of the week is evocative evocative.
• 9:52
Speaker 4: Adjective intending to bring out an especially emotional response. Chelsea
