- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast, Powered by the Nation, Part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, what is going on, brother?
- 0:49SPEAKER_07: You didn't say it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_07: You didn't say we're back, because we're back for the third time within a month.
- 0:53SPEAKER_07: You know, this is this is a this is a tough scene from the Talking Tech Podcast, man.
- 1:00SPEAKER_07: The about times we're like, oh, it's it's a comeback.
- 1:03SPEAKER_07: You know, whatever.
- 1:05SPEAKER_07: We're just very busy.
- 1:06SPEAKER_07: We both run very important companies, and as is as you can see, you know, sometimes the uh the private world must take like must take precedence over the microphone.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: I have an excuse.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: I was at the Super Bowl.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: So I we have an excuse here, okay.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: By the way, your Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes won another Super Bowl.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Congratulations to the GOAT.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: And I I just feel good because that means Texas Tech won another Super Bowl.
- 1:33SPEAKER_07: That's how it works.
- 1:34SPEAKER_07: And I'm very, I'm very happy for him, man.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: That's it's so awesome to see.
- 1:38SPEAKER_07: I was there was never any doubt at any point in the game that they weren't gonna win that game in my head.
- 1:42SPEAKER_07: So that was awesome to see him rack up another one because I am booking it that he's gonna be the next GOAT.
- 1:49SPEAKER_07: All right, he's going to at least match Tom Brady when it's all said and done.
- 1:54SPEAKER_07: I'm saying it now.
- 1:55SPEAKER_07: I know whenever we're doing episode uh 2056, um, in the year of uh 2040, whenever uh you and I uh have uh Alzheimer's and can't remember anything.
- 2:07SPEAKER_07: Um, I will be saying that I see I was right this entire time.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Well, at the rate we're releasing episodes at episode 2056, we may be like 250 years old.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, no big deal.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: Uh yes, Patrick Mahomes rules, we all understand.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Arizona was crazy.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Um, I I wasn't at the game, but I was in the presence.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: I was at the Super Bowl parties, I was at tailgates, it was really fun.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: Does that count?
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: It counts.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: You can say you were there.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, but the thing about Phoenix, like having the Super Bowl in Phoenix, they have everything so spread out.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: So it's like you're kind of at the Super Bowl, but you're also like a 45-minute drive from the stadium over there in Scottsdale.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: You have like Scottsdale, Phoenix, Glendale, and everything.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: And it was, I was at I was at Shaq's funhouse Friday night before the Super Bowl.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Like Shaq Shaq.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Like DJ Diesel.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Oh, like performed, you know, local Lubbock legend, Shaquille O'Neal.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, local DJ.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: And Snoop Dogg performed, and it was fantastic.
- 3:11SPEAKER_07: Well, that's wow, this this turned into much more than I was aware of.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: It was great.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: I I I mean, I was there for work, but that night it was kind of work, and it was a ball.
- 3:20SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 3:20SPEAKER_07: Well, stop making us all jealous.
- 3:22SPEAKER_07: Let's let's drop the small talk, let's get to it here.
- 3:24SPEAKER_07: Let's uh have some bad takes about Texas Tech Sports.
- 3:27SPEAKER_07: Let's get started.
- 3:27SPEAKER_07: What we what are we beginning with here?
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Well, you mentioned the Super Bowl.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: We won another Super Bowl this past Monday night.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Um, against Texas Longhorns, Texas Tech basketball, dare I say, is back.
- 3:42SPEAKER_07: I would be very confident in saying that we're back.
- 3:44SPEAKER_07: And I don't mean we're back in the UT sense.
- 3:46SPEAKER_07: I think we're back in the uh Texas Tech basketball sense, which I think everyone knows what that means.
- 3:51SPEAKER_07: I think that's a precedent that's been set.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: Now we gotta we gotta kind of you know take it easy for a second.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: We're still three and ten in conference.
- 3:58SPEAKER_07: But why you gotta mess with the vibes?
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: But three straight wins against top 15 teams at home, you have five games left in the Big 12 season, you are, I believe, 14 and 12 right now.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: It's gonna take a lot, okay, to get back into it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: But you have a chance at this point in the season.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: And five games ago, we were not thinking that way.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: So this win's huge.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: I'm excited.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, this team is playing its best basketball that they have all year, and uh this is good.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: This is really good.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: You just beat your rival at home, it was a great atmosphere.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: Uh the guys played great.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: I I mean, you you gotta be excited.
- 4:43SPEAKER_07: UT just can't stop holding these L's in Lubbock, you know, it's just it's a it's commonplace for them.
- 4:49SPEAKER_07: Um, did that win in Baton Rouge wake us up?
- 4:52SPEAKER_07: Did something happen over there?
- 4:54SPEAKER_07: Did we eat just some really great gumbo that knocks somebody's hat off?
- 4:57SPEAKER_07: And we just decided to really turn things on.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: No, but there's something to that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: There's like something to what you're saying because you know the gumbo.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Well, the gumbo's fantastic.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: If you haven't been, come on down.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: We can show you a good gumbo spot.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: But no, you get that wind under your belt, you get that monkey off your back, like what we mentioned a million times in last episode.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: Um, I think you come back.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: No, we're not gonna do the bit, not anymore.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Um, you you come back against a really good Iowa State team at home from the largest comeback, I think, in Texas Tech basketball history.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: Um, so you get some momentum.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you lost two away games at Baylor and then at Oklahoma State, but you come back and respond, you beat two straight top 15 teams in Kansas State and Texas at home.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: Um, and you're rolling, you're playing really well, which is something we've been inconsistent, but now you're finally seeing a little bit of consistency with the offense.
- 5:55SPEAKER_07: So, yeah, kind of building that confidence back.
- 5:57SPEAKER_07: And you know, I like how you talk about saying how we were gonna get back into it here that there's actually a chance that we could, you know, maybe somehow put us into back into the conversation, dare we say, you know, March Madness.
- 6:09SPEAKER_07: And you know, it's not that bad looking ahead of us here.
- 6:12SPEAKER_07: You got West Virginia, you're at West Virginia, it's not an easy place to go to.
- 6:16SPEAKER_07: You're at Oklahoma.
- 6:17SPEAKER_07: That's a you know, that's not necessarily an overly difficult time right now in Norman.
- 6:21SPEAKER_07: And then you're hosting TCU, number 15, but obviously, you know what you're you're knocking off Giants in the USA.
- 6:27SPEAKER_07: Um, then you're off to Lawrence, probably an L, but you know, the maybe we can find some magic there.
- 6:32SPEAKER_07: And then you're hosting Oklahoma State at the this new uh ruckusy USA once more.
- 6:38SPEAKER_07: I'm saying, like, if there's a time if there's a schedule that allows you that offers you the chance to get back in the conversation, I think this is it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_07: I think this is the opportunity to do that.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, what I we don't have the worst schedule down the stretch.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Um, you're still you're three and ten in conference.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: If you win those five games, which is the best case scenario here, you're eight and ten, and you're probably in the NCA tournament, in my opinion.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Um, going eight and ten in this league is uh and especially down the stretch, you would have been gone seven and oh.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, that's a huge indication of you getting in the tournament.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: I don't think you're gonna go five and oh.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: Um, there's gonna be a game here that you drop.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: This team has been way too inconsistent for uh us to believe we're gonna go five and oh down the stretch.
- 7:24SPEAKER_07: And it's a big 12.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it's a big 12.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Every game stinks, it's really hard to win in this league, as we've very well seen this year.
- 7:32SPEAKER_07: As we proved to the them horns of Texas, that's for sure.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: But if you could have two away games this year, you would want them to be West Virginia and Oklahoma.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Two of the other worst teams in this conference.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: Um, you also play Oklahoma State at home, which is a very winnable game.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Um, TCU could potentially be without Mike Miles.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he's back, he's their best player.
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: And you do go to Kansas.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: And I don't know if anybody watched the game last night.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: Kevin McCullough got hurt.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: Um, he twisted his ankle.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: I don't know how long, you know, the worst Kevin.
- 8:05SPEAKER_07: As he's oh, okay, yes.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, worse Kevin.
- 8:08SPEAKER_04: Um, he did get hurt.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, obviously, hope he's all right.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: You know, we don't wish injuries on anybody, but um in Lawrence, I I, you know, it's uh it's a tough one.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: But Kansas has shown some inconsistencies, so I don't know.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Uh there's potential here.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: There's potential.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: Your best shot is still winning the Big 12 tournament and then getting that bid that way.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: But I, you know, it's it's not the most far off thing to go four and one to end the year, the way we've been playing.
- 8:38SPEAKER_07: No, not at all.
- 8:39SPEAKER_07: And do you do you think we're still kind of in this?
- 8:41SPEAKER_07: I know no fan base wants to even go here, but are we still kind of in that?
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: Are we at least in the conversation for perhaps the NIT, at least some sort of postseason conversation uh participation?
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, yeah, especially if you go four and one, three and one, barely miss the NCA tournament, and you know, you'll get an NIT bid, but um, you know, how do you feel about that?
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: What's what's it's hard to get behind it?
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, it is a postseason birth, and you still want to win a tournament, you're still watching your team, which is cool, but uh it's not the NCA tournament.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: No, of course not.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: And at what point, you know, we are as a program at Texas Tech, uh, the NIT is pretty unacceptable.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: 100% so it would be a downer, but you know, you still want to win a tournament.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: It's not like you just blow it off, but right, those are kind of my facts.
- 9:26SPEAKER_07: Hey, let's but let's forget that now.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:29SPEAKER_07: Eyes are on the prize, eyes are on the prize.
- 9:31SPEAKER_04: We're playing our best basketball we have all year.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: So that those are the facts right now.
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: Davion Harman is playing great, Kevin O'Banner's playing awesome.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: You got Fardos back.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, uh Jalen Tyson has been stepping it up like crazy.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're finally getting a little bit of bench production.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Demarion Williams is playing good defense.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Kerwin's playing good defense.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: Elijah Fisher's finally showing a little bit more of what you want to see.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: Um, Jennings, Lamar Washington was a huge reason.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: You beat Kansas State.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, you you finally got some guys that are stepping up in the right positions, and it was gonna take some time for this team.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: You're still missing pop.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, you know, you're still missing bocho.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: So these are these are key pieces for you, even though I have some thoughts about Daniel Boccia, but we can get to that later.
- 10:18SPEAKER_07: All right, man.
- 10:19SPEAKER_07: Uh I almost just don't even want to ramble on here, but uh yeah, dude, if there's ever a time for things to start co becoming cohesive and coming together, this is your last shot to do it.
- 10:30SPEAKER_07: So I'm glad it's it's kind of a better late than never scenario right now for us.
- 10:35SPEAKER_07: Um, so I'm glad to see some, you know, fight in this, you know, there's always been fight, but I'm glad to see some real results actually happening.
- 10:44SPEAKER_07: And as you kind of said, you're kind of like kind of voicing the general opinion of the Tex Tech fan base that, you know, in it would be unacceptable and really not making the tournament right now is kind of pretty unacceptable in our eyes.
- 10:53SPEAKER_07: Um, we just kind of become spoiled, or at least uh built that exp built that cult.
- 10:56SPEAKER_07: I you know what I don't even want to say spoiled, I want to say like we've built the culture to the point where we see ourselves as a team that can expect that every single year now.
- 11:06SPEAKER_07: So I I I'm with you.
- 11:08SPEAKER_07: I think that these guys are in the locker room thinking that they can still do it, they're playing like they think they still do it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_07: So I hope they keep going on with that and do something crazy.
- 11:15SPEAKER_07: And like you said, I think if we win these next five games, then you are absolutely in that conversation once again.
- 11:21SPEAKER_07: I think everyone's gonna be talking about you again.
- 11:23SPEAKER_07: Um, because that is a tough five to rattle off in the toughest uh conference in the country, and it's not even close.
- 11:28SPEAKER_07: Like every talking head seems to be agreeing with it at this point.
- 11:31SPEAKER_07: Um, and obviously got the Big 12 championship to bolster it up from there.
- 11:35SPEAKER_07: Um, but I mean, any other thought?
- 11:37SPEAKER_07: I mean, we kind of just blew past the UT game.
- 11:39SPEAKER_07: I mean, I know it is little brother, you beat them, it's their Super Bowl that you you kind of blocked them from doing so.
- 11:44SPEAKER_07: Um, but uh any any thoughts on that game of the guy who uh shall not be spoken for, uh couldn't even return to?
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I think it's it's kind of a I it's kind of a downer to think this way, but imagine if we had Fardos all year, a healthy Fardos AMAC, because he was a really, really key role down the stretch for us to win this game.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: He made two great passes to Kevin O'Banner.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: He blocked or he affected at least uh uh that Brock Cunningham layup that he smoked.
- 12:13SPEAKER_07: I thought Brock just sucked.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, he's not very good.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I think that was on full display uh on Monday night.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: But um, you're just getting a different level of confidence from this team.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: Davion Harman had 21 points in the first half.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: I mean, his career high was 23.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: He had he he beat his career high this game with 25 points.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: He was obviously a huge factor in your win.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: KO down the stretch was fantastic.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Um, but just having a big presence like Fardos changes the game for you.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: He's obviously still not in the best of shape.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Um, he's still, you know, missing some assignments defensively.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: He's slow.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: We understand, but he affects the game offensively so much.
- 12:53SPEAKER_04: He gives you that other weapon, and he's such a good passer for a big man that it frees up guys like Kevin O'Banner to have a good night.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: So um, and like we mentioned earlier, you're getting some bench production, which is really, really good to see.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: Lamar Washington in that Kansas State game was electric defensively.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, the guy was fantastic.
- 13:13SPEAKER_04: He looked like he was a fifth-year senior out there against Kansas State.
- 13:17SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, I think you're just getting a different player that's stepping up every night, which is what we needed with this team.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Somebody different.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: You know, it's not always gonna be O'Banner that's gonna go for 17 or 20 points.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: You know, it's gonna have to be Tyson one night, it's gonna have to be Fardos going for 12 and 9.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be Davion Harmon who's played out of his mind the last few games.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, I I'm thrilled with how we played against Texas.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: If we can uh the whole thing with this team has been consistency, if we can do this night in and night out, I mean you're obviously a tournament team.
- 13:49SPEAKER_07: Absolutely, man.
- 13:50SPEAKER_07: And obviously with the the the Raider riot, you can feel the fans last night.
- 13:54SPEAKER_07: It that's not you don't even have to, it's not even needed to be stated.
- 13:57SPEAKER_07: And I hope that we can pop out for the last two games that we get to host there in the USA for the season, um, and really show out and make a difference.
- 14:04SPEAKER_07: So because we're gonna need it all we can get against the frogs.
- 14:07SPEAKER_07: So uh, dude, I love it, man.
- 14:09SPEAKER_07: And seriously, this is one of the that's uh this is funny enough, this is one of the very last times that we may ever see the Longhorns in the USA.
- 14:18SPEAKER_07: It's kind of weird to be talking about it that way, and to be able to get that from underneath them um again in Lubbock, like we did in football the last time they'll ever they'll come to Lubbock for a long time.
- 14:27SPEAKER_07: We got that, and just keep that kind of keep that trend going.
- 14:30SPEAKER_07: And it's uh hopefully we'll send them off the same way in baseball.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: What a segue.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: 2024, Texas and Oklahoma are bouncing for the SEC.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: It is confirmed.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: Uh they worked out a deal with Fox and ESPN um that UT and OU are officially gonna leave in the summer of 2024.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: That means we get a one more football season, we get one more basketball season.
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm not sure.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: I think one more, two more baseball seasons technically.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Because we get this one as it started in the next season.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then uh they will be in the SEC and we will have our Big 12 back to 12.
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: Um or potentially more, but let's talk about what's guaranteed right now.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: How do you feel about UTO you leaving early?
- 15:16SPEAKER_07: Dude, I'm really happy about it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_07: Uh I I think it's I think it's a really good thing for the Big 12, um, because it's really added some concrete uh footing underneath your feet, you know, because now you know what's happening, you know what's gonna be happening going forward because for a while there we're in this weird sort of limbo with uh U U T and O U.
- 15:37SPEAKER_07: Like when are they gonna leave?
- 15:38SPEAKER_07: Are they actually gonna wait till 2025?
- 15:40SPEAKER_07: Um, is there gonna be a deal struck?
- 15:42SPEAKER_07: Are we gonna get screwed?
- 15:42SPEAKER_07: Are they gonna get screwed kind of thing?
- 15:44SPEAKER_07: And um, not that I would have been upset about that, but dude, I I think this is good.
- 15:48SPEAKER_07: I really do.
- 15:49SPEAKER_07: I think it's overall a very positive thing for the Big 12, and it's nice to know that this is gonna be the send-off season for them.
- 15:55SPEAKER_07: Um, so that'll that'll kind of add some drama to the season.
- 15:58SPEAKER_07: It'll be a really weird Big 12 season overall.
- 16:00SPEAKER_07: But you know, part of me is like is really happy that the Big 12 can look forward to the future because we can talk about it later whenever we talk about the Pac-12 uh situation.
- 16:08SPEAKER_07: But the other part of me is obviously, you know, uh it's it's great to give them the middle finger and say, I'm so tired of dealing with this with you.
- 16:16SPEAKER_07: Um, but at the same time, you know, like last night was a lot of fun, and it does suck to see that go away.
- 16:23SPEAKER_07: I mean, I I don't care, I don't care how fan how how uh prideful fans want to be about it, you know, we're like we don't need you, we don't we don't need you either, kind of thing.
- 16:31SPEAKER_07: But you know, there just won't be another team on the schedule like Texas to us.
- 16:38SPEAKER_07: Um, it's just not gonna be that way.
- 16:40SPEAKER_07: Um, that the goals of the season shift once they leave.
- 16:43SPEAKER_07: I mean, I I know, I know we always we we wanted to win the Big 12 and stuff, but beating UT is absolutely a big deal for any coach at Tex Tech, and that just won't be a factor anymore.
- 16:52SPEAKER_07: And they for the fans as well.
- 16:54SPEAKER_07: So a part of me is sad to see those moments go because some of the some of Tex Tech's biggest moments are whenever we make UT cry.
- 17:01SPEAKER_07: And I just we don't have that, we won't have that opportunity anymore.
- 17:04SPEAKER_07: And that bumps me out how this is the last time we can do it, but man, is a storybook for the what's gonna be set up for this season, how the last game on in and at least on the gridiron, UT's ever gonna play with a Big 12 logo on their pad on their shirts against us.
- 17:16SPEAKER_07: And it's gonna just I'm I'm probably going too long on this, and I want to hear your thoughts on it as well.
- 17:21SPEAKER_07: But it's really bittersweet, and I mean I I think that's probably the best way to put it.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I don't know if anything's gonna match the level of energy that we bring as a fan base when UT comes to town, and that's not you know, uh a shining store on UT, that's just the rivalry, and that is what it is.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: It's fun to play your rival, it's fun to beat your rival.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: That's when you get the highest of high and the lowest of low when you lose or win against your rival.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, whatever UT fans say on Twitter, uh they're always gonna say it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_04: It's it, you know, they're entitled, they haven't accomplished anything, you know, to be to have the ego that they have as UT fans.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: But what we can take some solace in, we beat UT and OU in Lubbock for the foreseeable future.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the last game ever in Lubbock, we beat both those teams, and we could not say that for you know the past 10 plus years.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: I you know, our program is on such a good trajectory right now, football-wise, that it does not matter if UT or OU we play them in 2025 or beyond.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: We're in a really good spot as a as a football team.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: And I think we need to recognize that whether we play UT or not, we're on we're in a really good spot at Texas Tech.
- 18:37SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, obviously OU leaving the conference, especially is a weight off your shoulder.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, you're playing, you're having four teams that we're happy to welcome into the conference, but are, you know, obviously less of a challenge than Oklahoma.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: They're G5 teams.
- 18:56SPEAKER_04: They're as of right now.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you know, but they're obviously cut above, but you know what I'm saying.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: It's not like they're gonna be breezes, but it gives you a good chance to have these four versus an OU.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Um, so for that, I'm excited.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: I'm excited that we're finally out of their shadow.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: I'm excited that we can finally make our own path because we've just been living in the shadow of UT.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: We're the Big 12 Texas team now.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, us, Baylor, TCU, and Houston, obviously, but you know, Texas Tech is the big state school, right?
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, of the of the bunch.
- 19:29SPEAKER_07: So I like I like that.
- 19:31SPEAKER_07: I like, I mean, I like that you set it up that way.
- 19:33SPEAKER_07: Um, I I think I think where the hype shifts.
- 19:37SPEAKER_07: It's just doesn't just go from oh man, we got we got uh UT in October, bank, we're gonna pack the Jones, it's gonna be great.
- 19:43SPEAKER_07: Now the the hype as a fan base is gonna shift to now that we I would because of the culture shifting in football, we're going from okay, I don't know if this is a hot take, and I I don't want to upset any tech tech loyal here.
- 19:56SPEAKER_07: I hope that y'all agree with me on this.
- 19:58SPEAKER_07: Is we've embraced playing the spoiler for way too long.
- 20:03SPEAKER_07: Like that's kind of been like our role is we're the spoiler, you know, we're the we're the ones that, yeah, we don't have the conference hopes, but we're gonna make sure we beat a lot of teams and upset a lot of people.
- 20:14SPEAKER_07: I I hope we see the shifts go from that, which is a fun, it's a fun role, don't get me wrong.
- 20:20SPEAKER_07: We shift from that to no, we're gonna win this.
- 20:24SPEAKER_07: We're gonna we're gonna we're gonna win every game we can.
- 20:26SPEAKER_07: We're gonna wanna win a win a uh Big 12 title.
- 20:28SPEAKER_07: And now with the expansion of the playoffs, we can have real playoff aims now.
- 20:32SPEAKER_07: And we can be that highly ranked team that people want to beat rather than be the plucky team that wants to beat them.
- 20:38SPEAKER_07: And I just I just think that we need to see that culture shift along with the success that we're experiencing in football and hopefully push it forward rather than just being like, Oh, I can't wait.
- 20:47SPEAKER_07: We I hope we upset UT and OU or whoever else is ranked in the Big 12 this year.
- 20:51SPEAKER_07: You know what I mean?
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, and I think that culture is shift with McGuire.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, you've seen it in interviews, players in the past, under Wells and under Kingsbury, have thought, hey, you know, C T O U, we're kind of expecting to lose.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: If we don't lose, awesome.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: But if we do lose, it's kind of what it is.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: This is different, you know, to what Joey says, to what all the coaching staff says, what the players say, we should beat these teams.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: Yes, we should we should compete for Big 12 championships.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: That should be the culture of what you have, and I think that's what you have with Joey McGuire.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: So, um, yes, football-wise, I think we are set up for future success.
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: I think we're set up for future success in in a lot of sports, right?
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 21:32SPEAKER_07: So yes, yes.
- 21:34SPEAKER_07: I mean, basketball and baseball, we've already shifted away from what I was just describing in football, and all it took was experiencing that success and maintaining it.
- 21:45SPEAKER_07: So as soon as we start doing that in football, like I think we're already off to a great start in doing so.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: Um, I think you'll start seeing that role shift change in the minds of the fans.
- 21:54SPEAKER_07: So I I I I'm just saying, like, I'm really happy about it.
- 21:57SPEAKER_07: Like, I like we already said in the Big 12 is going to be.
- 22:00SPEAKER_07: Uh, very financially bolstered because of this deal.
- 22:03SPEAKER_07: Brett Yormark did a fantastic job making sure the Big 12 wasn't screwed coming out of this.
- 22:08SPEAKER_07: So you see, I don't know if y'all know how it works, but UTNOU have foregone any uh money coming in through the Big 12 to their schools this season um for the next couple seasons, and it's going towards the conference instead.
- 22:21SPEAKER_07: So um there's talk of what the Big 12 is going to decide to do with this money ultimately.
- 22:27SPEAKER_07: Is it gonna go just flat out be spread out amongst the eight legacy schools, or are they gonna try to do something else to enhance the conference?
- 22:34SPEAKER_07: And that's kind of where we'll talk about the pack in a bit with that.
- 22:37SPEAKER_07: And uh it's just it's an interesting conversation.
- 22:40SPEAKER_07: I think Brad more, but I think Brett Yormark has been an absolute G about all of this.
- 22:45SPEAKER_07: I think he's been a home run higher, and I really don't he hasn't done a single thing wrong in my eyes yet.
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I there's a huge difference from Brad Yormark and uh the last guy, oh Bulls.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, one guy is thinking ahead, thinking to the future, and one guy was just thinking and trying to maintain what we got.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: Um this what your mark's done has been great.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: He's talking all different sorts of things.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: He's got a media deal locked down already, he's got uh potential schools that are rumored to be joining the conference, whether it's just you know certain sports only or whether it's rating another certain league.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: So obviously nothing has come of that yet.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's it's rumored, it's in the works, it's talks, there's something there for us to grasp onto there's smoke, and where there's smoke, there's fire.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, I'm I'm excited for the conference because we're trending upwards.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: Meanwhile, you're seeing the Pac-12 trending very downwards right now in the news.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: And I don't know if you had any thoughts on that.
- 23:56SPEAKER_07: No, I absolutely do.
- 23:57SPEAKER_07: Um, just one more step.
- 23:58SPEAKER_07: Well, I just want to uh step on Brett real quick.
- 24:00SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 24:01SPEAKER_07: Um, because I like that you you brought up Bob Bolesby, and I wasn't necessarily a Bob Bowlesby hater, um, in the sense that I just think he got blindsided.
- 24:11SPEAKER_07: I think uh a lot of people at least come these commissioners just don't know what's going on when that happens.
- 24:16SPEAKER_07: They do like this is like covert black ops operations, I think whatever what they do at UTNO you did.
- 24:21SPEAKER_07: I really do.
- 24:22SPEAKER_07: Um, and I'm I'm not just letting him off the hook, but I'm glad we went and got a guy that is so separated from the college world that he just came in thinking about thinking this all differently.
- 24:34SPEAKER_07: Like he came in with a vision, like a real vision.
- 24:36SPEAKER_07: That's probably what that's probably why you want his interview.
- 24:38SPEAKER_07: He was like, This is exactly what I'm gonna do.
- 24:40SPEAKER_07: This is the business plan.
- 24:42SPEAKER_07: And the thing about Bob Bolsby and the vast majority of any commissioners I've ever been a the commissioner of any conference is it's a good old boys' club, and that's how I always hear it described.
- 24:53SPEAKER_07: Oh, it's just this guy that worked his way through the college bureaucracy, it's just this circle of you know guys that have been in it long enough and it's their turn, sort of idea.
- 25:02SPEAKER_07: It's kind of it's kind of political.
- 25:04SPEAKER_07: I mean, a lot of a lot of politics works that way, unfortunately.
- 25:07SPEAKER_07: And just to go out and get this guy that had nothing to do with any institution in the Big 12 or any instant or any college in general, I think that's where we won.
- 25:16SPEAKER_07: I think we got a guy that understands how to sell a brand, and that's what the Big 12 has always had an issue with.
- 25:23SPEAKER_07: We have struggled so hard with branding that it's just now making a U-turn and it's been because it's under his watch.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: No, I think I think what you said is correct.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: I what Brett Yormark does is and how you be successful in any business, not just college sports, any business, is you try to be progressive, you try to look ahead, you try to see how you can improve.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: What Bullsby didn't do is that he was he was very comfortable with where we were at.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: He was fine with what we had in the Big 12 with Texas and OU being the big money makers.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: We're fine with that.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: He never looked to improve the conference in a way.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: What Sankey has done a good job of in the SEC, what Warren did a good job in the big in the Big Ten is they looked to improve the conference, they look to take over college sports.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: And unfortunately, that is what it is.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: Would we like it better if it was back in 2005 and everybody was, you know, in those conferences?
- 26:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we would all like it.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: I think we've all agreed that the fans would like it if we were back to that, but also there's a reason it's not that way, and it's because two guys were looking ahead and trying to improve what they had, and the other three were not.
- 26:38SPEAKER_04: And so, you know, I we have a guy who's looking ahead and trying to improve what we have.
- 26:43SPEAKER_07: We have a guy that's being pro, like you said, we have a guy being proactive, not reactive.
- 26:47SPEAKER_07: Uh, the history of the Big 12 has been nothing but reactions, and we're finally being proactive.
- 26:51SPEAKER_07: We're kind of doing like a counterattack, you know.
- 26:53SPEAKER_07: Whenever uh whenever UT and OU bailed, Brett, you know, and we we went ahead and added these four, the easily the four best uh free agent schools without question.
- 27:03SPEAKER_07: And obviously, you know, people are still gonna sit there and laugh at us, saying, like, oh, they had to add G5 teams to survive.
- 27:08SPEAKER_07: But that's we're starting to kind of turn that U-turn that these obviously these are the four best choices, and it's starting to hurt other uh conferences that are losing teams as well.
- 27:17SPEAKER_07: And whenever we're talking about that, obviously talk about the Pac-12.
- 27:19SPEAKER_07: So we can go ahead and start talking about the talking about the Pac-12.
- 27:22SPEAKER_07: Um, I think this is probably indirectly Brett Yormark's best thing he's done so far is he outmaneuvered the the Pac-12.
- 27:31SPEAKER_07: I know I'm kind of sound like I'm sound like a whole bunch of writers out there uh that have been giving props to him, but it's absolutely true.
- 27:37SPEAKER_07: The biggest thing being set not only well, not only did we add the poor best options outside of the power five, um, he we he went ahead and built a ceiling in the media rights for the pac-12.
- 27:50SPEAKER_07: He artificially set the maximum for the pac-12.
- 27:53SPEAKER_07: And I can't imagine how infuriating that must be for uh Kleikov because you know he was telling his schools they're gonna be making way more than that, like at least$10 million more than that.
- 28:04SPEAKER_07: And after Brett Yormark's uh pinned in that deal with uh with traditional sports powers and ESPN and Fox, you know, those are those are the vast majority of where games are gonna be no matter what, uh no matter what conference you are in, if you're obviously programmed by them, um he set the price limit.
- 28:21SPEAKER_07: And so now the best they can do is match that, but the odds are there's no need to anymore.
- 28:28SPEAKER_07: So uh it seems that the the ESPN and Fox have kind of made their college football portfolio and they're set in stone and happy about it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_07: And so if it's either going to be at this point in time with the Pac-12 now that CBA officially CBS and uh Warner uh Turner Warner is out, um, it appears their only option is to probably take what is likely a low ball deal from Fox.
- 28:52SPEAKER_07: Oh, Fox is apparently out as well.
- 28:53SPEAKER_07: Sorry, a low ball deal from ESPN, or go to becoming a street or become a streaming experiment.
- 29:00SPEAKER_07: And neither seems ideal for your legacy pack teams.
- 29:05SPEAKER_07: It really doesn't, and especially over you're talking about how Kalyakov was apparently making not so secret visits to SMU and uh South Dakota State.
- 29:13SPEAKER_07: That once again reiterates that the Big 12 took the best there was the options there.
- 29:18SPEAKER_07: So I know I I kind of I kind of went long there, so I want to get you let you get your thoughts in so before we continue.
- 29:23SPEAKER_04: No, I think you're right.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, from everything that's been said, Fox is out on a Pac-12 deal, Turner and CBS are out on a Pac-12 deal.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, Amazon, I don't think, wants a lot of rights to this.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: I think they just want something minimal.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: Um, so that leaves ESPN.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: And from what Bob Iger has just said, who has recently retaken the reins over at Disney, he doesn't he wants to start making cutbacks on certain things, you know, because Disney's lost a lot of money lately.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: And you know, that's not good for what the Pac-12 wants to do right now.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: And we locked something down before that happened.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: And to your streaming point, now I did this is a bigger conversation, obviously, than just college sports.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: But if you've noticed, I have HBO Max, I have um uh I have Hulu, uh, you know, I have Netflix, but specifically with HBO Max, and I even have Peacock, I got Peacock for some strange reason.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: I think I wanted to watch The Office for something, and it was like$5.99, so I was like, okay.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Steven, I know I know, I know, I'm a sucker.
- 30:29SPEAKER_04: Peacock and HBO Max recently have instituted ads into their system, they didn't have that before.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: There's a reason for that, it's because they're losing money.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: Streaming is losing money in a huge way, and Disney realizes that they're throwing so much money into Disney Plus right now and are losing so much money from that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_04: If you're going into the streaming services right now, if you're the Pac-12, you are in a really bad position because streaming is not gonna be what it is in a year, it just isn't.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: And so the Pac-12 is in a really bad spot.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: And what does that mean for the Pac-12 teams?
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: They have to put out a statement that says, hey, we're aligned, they're consummating their marriage, everything is not as bad as it seems, so that's why I'm putting out this statement.
- 31:18SPEAKER_04: That is bad.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: Yes, that is real a really bad look for the Pac-12 right now, and even worse, they use the word consummate.
- 31:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and what the Big 12 has a chance to do right now is take a conference that is in absolute shambles right now and rate it and better yourself.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: And it's a it's a war right now between college sports conferences, but it's what you gotta do.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: And if anybody is gonna raid the Pac-12, it's gonna be Brett Yormark.
- 31:49SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 31:50SPEAKER_07: I like that.
- 31:51SPEAKER_07: I like that you kind of went into streaming there.
- 31:52SPEAKER_07: That was a really good point.
- 31:54SPEAKER_07: Um, I mean, uh, you and I are obviously aren't economic experts, but something that's kind of been seen whenever there's about to be a bit of a you know an economic downturn, tech usually goes first.
- 32:05SPEAKER_07: And what's what's streaming connected to?
- 32:07SPEAKER_07: And that's tech.
- 32:08SPEAKER_07: And it's just not a great time to be involved with any of that right now, and especially with the the economy on the rocks in general, it's just it's not it's not a great time to be throwing in your future on a risk like that.
- 32:21SPEAKER_07: And the thing about being on ESPN and Fox, um, one obviously you're on the you're on the workhorses, you're on the name in sports, but two, those both of those networks have streaming arms.
- 32:35SPEAKER_07: Like the the ESPN now on the on ESPN Plus, I mean a big 12 now on ESPN Plus, I love it, it's great.
- 32:41SPEAKER_07: And I I I'm paying ESPN a little more to watch more of my own team, and now I'll be able to watch them on ESPN cable as well.
- 32:50SPEAKER_07: So it's it's it's more of an extension, it's more of a bonus rather than the whole damn thing.
- 32:55SPEAKER_07: So it's it's just it's it sucks for packs fans right now.
- 32:59SPEAKER_07: I get it, but it's great for Big 12 fans to know that we the Big 12 is mostly responsible for the downfall of the Pac-12 right now.
- 33:08SPEAKER_07: Um, yes, the Big Ten obviously threw in their their the the the death blow into them, but they weren't able to react and save themselves because of the Big 12.
- 33:18SPEAKER_07: But at the same time, the the Pac-12 wasn't able to react and save themselves because of hubris not that long ago.
- 33:25SPEAKER_07: They thought they were way too good for them for middle America.
- 33:29SPEAKER_07: They could have killed the Big 12, they could have had Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and anyone else that could have and could have could have wanted to get into the central time zone and into this fertile fan and uh recruit land.
- 33:41SPEAKER_07: But no, they're they were too good for us, and it's just it's truly a reaping what you sow scenario, so you don't feel that bad about the administration of that conference.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, and obviously a lot's gonna change.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: Kevin Warren uh leaving the Big Ten uh commissioner role, he's gonna go to the Chicago Bears, depending on who takes that job.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, is gonna depend on the futures of Oregon, the futures of Washington, those other top priority schools right now.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: And obviously it's like a blow-for-blow situation.
- 34:15SPEAKER_04: So if the SEC goes and tries to get Clemson, the Big Ten has to react and try to get Washington in Oregon, then that leaves the Pac-12 in even more shambles for the Big 12 to potentially raid the four corner schools, like we want to do.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: So there's a lot at play here, there's a lot at risk.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna act like I know what's gonna happen next because I don't think anybody does.
- 34:35SPEAKER_04: But if anybody I'm gonna trust in to for the future of this conference, it's Brett Yormark right now.
- 34:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, me too.
- 34:42SPEAKER_07: Um, I I I understand why you'd bring up the ACC schools because obviously the football-oriented schools are probably getting antsy that they're in a basketball conference, you know.
- 34:53SPEAKER_07: Um, and that that's been the case before as well.
- 34:56SPEAKER_07: Um, but the thing about that is they're locked, they're apparently locked into a media contract until 2035.
- 35:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and it's not a good one, like payout-wise.
- 35:05SPEAKER_07: No, but are they kind of geniuses for locking in the conference future for at least a decade or no?
- 35:12SPEAKER_04: No, no, especially well, like you're a genius if you're boss in college, you know.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: So you're not you're not a genius if you're Clemson because now you're stuck in it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, and it's like with all this conference realignment, you know Clemson Florida State would have bounced.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: You know if they had the if they had the right or if they had the availability to bounce to the SEC or Big Ten, they would have done it.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: So I mean it's a given tech.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's yeah, Miami would have been, you know, they're a hot name.
- 35:40SPEAKER_04: So um, I don't know what it's gonna take.
- 35:42SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna pretend like I'm an expert in those contract negotiations and when they can leave and everything of that nature, but it it's definitely a tough situation right now if you are a Clemson or a Miami, because you would bounce with all this stuff going on.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: And what the Pac-12 has done is they have not locked down a media contract, and these schools are available.
- 36:07SPEAKER_04: And they eventually, after they see more of this conference being inept and not being able to lock down a media rights deal or getting something terrible with the streaming service or Amazon or something of that nature, you know, they're gonna want something more reliable and something to survive in college sports.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: And the Big 12 is a survival ground right now.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 36:27SPEAKER_04: Like the Big 12 is a really good position to be in.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: You are clearly third, but you are a third right now.
- 36:36SPEAKER_07: At least you're placing, you know, at this point.
- 36:38SPEAKER_07: At least you're placing.
- 36:39SPEAKER_07: And the whole idea is, you know, most of us don't have a shot to get into the Big Ten or SEC in this in the current landscape.
- 36:47SPEAKER_07: Um uh, but you can go to the but you can go to the Big 12.
- 36:51SPEAKER_07: You know, that's that's the thing about the Pac-12 right now.
- 36:53SPEAKER_07: And it just kind of makes me wonder if if their future is who their future is tied to.
- 36:59SPEAKER_07: Like, I I I wonder if it's a cohesive, like unified movement to try to make it work, or if it's just everyone's watching a certain pair of programs and seeing what they're gonna do first.
- 37:11SPEAKER_04: Like, I I that's absolutely what it is.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: They're looking to see what Washington and Oregon are going to do.
- 37:16SPEAKER_07: Well, but what about like Stanford and Cal?
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Stanford and Cal might be, I don't know, the whole situation with USC and UCLA.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: They might, if the Pac-12 absolutely disperses, you might see Stanford and Cal get grandfathered into the Big Ten.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, I don't know if that's a thing they have with USC and UCLA going on, but right now it's kind of an eat or be eaten situation.
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: And for me, and for I think the Big 12, you have to be the eaters right now.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: And you gotta get some, you gotta get some big time programs in here.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: Now, do I think you're gonna get Oregon and Washington?
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: Probably not, but you're you have a chance to get Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, and Colorado.
- 37:56SPEAKER_04: And that's huge right now.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: Especially gigantic, yep.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, especially with the upswing of some of these schools.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, I think it's kind of a it's not really a wait-and-see situation for the Big 12.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: You have to go all in.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: And right now, I mean, he's doing some good things, trying to get some basketball powerhouses to officially make yourself as the Big 12 the basketball conference, even if you TNO you leave, you still you're gonna have Houston, you're gonna have Texas Tech, you're gonna have Baylor, you're gonna have, you know, all the Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, yeah, exactly.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: So you're the you're the premier basketball conference.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: How do you feel about potentially adding Gonzaga and maybe another basketball-only school?
- 38:37SPEAKER_04: Have we not talked about this?
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: I don't think so.
- 38:40SPEAKER_07: Wow, wow, you know, uh okay, so yeah, they kind of puts a bow on the on the pack there.
- 38:43SPEAKER_07: But yeah, uh, we'll get there.
- 38:45SPEAKER_07: Well, I'll go and give my thoughts on Gizaga once we wrap the bell on it.
- 38:47SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 38:48SPEAKER_07: I would love to have the fourth corner schools in the Big 12, and I think they'd be a pretty good cultural fit as well.
- 38:54SPEAKER_07: And I think having Utah BYU as a conference game would rule.
- 38:57SPEAKER_07: I think the Holy War as a Big 12 game is awesome.
- 38:59SPEAKER_07: Same with the war, uh, the battle in the desert, and bringing Colorado back to familiar old conference space that they've had before and a lot of history with.
- 39:07SPEAKER_07: So I would love that so much.
- 39:09SPEAKER_07: I and I I hope they get nervous enough to just actually do something crazy and do it.
- 39:13SPEAKER_07: Um, I really hope that this Pac-12 deal sucks ass just so I could selfishly have these teams in the in the conference.
- 39:20SPEAKER_07: I really do.
- 39:20SPEAKER_07: So um it's about time that we were the freaking poachers and not the poached.
- 39:24SPEAKER_07: So it's just we've had this unfair uh disadvantages of a being associated with schools like UT and B being in the middle of America, so anybody can look at us.
- 39:34SPEAKER_07: So um, yeah, let's get to Gonzaga real quick.
- 39:37SPEAKER_07: Um, dude, I'm I'm kind of down with it.
- 39:41SPEAKER_07: I know a lot of people have some like righteous, like no, like I'm not righteous is the wrong word, valid reasons to be against uh adding a member like that, but I am so for it.
- 39:52SPEAKER_07: Why not bring them in as a bas uh a men's and women's and uh men's women's and basketball team and probably baseball as well?
- 39:58SPEAKER_07: I think they have a solid baseball program too.
- 40:00SPEAKER_07: So why not?
- 40:01SPEAKER_07: Why not?
- 40:02SPEAKER_07: You know, especially if they get a junior affiliation deal.
- 40:05SPEAKER_07: We do it for so many non-money-making sports.
- 40:08SPEAKER_07: Why not do it for the money for a money-making sport for a program that is clearly the best free agent that uh out there for the for the for basketball?
- 40:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the problem I see is you need to add two.
- 40:20SPEAKER_04: You can't just add Gonzaga.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Why not?
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Why, why?
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: Why uh problem with that?
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: But like what uh so what your 13 teams with one being just a basketball only?
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: I feel like you could add two basketballs, you could add a Creighton, you could add a Villanova, you could add, I don't know, somebody else.
- 40:40SPEAKER_07: Do those have the same sort of draw as the Gonzaga?
- 40:42SPEAKER_07: I mean, they think Creighton does.
- 40:44SPEAKER_07: I like I can see a Creighton doing that, but would Creighton lead the Big East to join the Big 12?
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: If you could get Gonzaga to join the Big 12, you can get Creighton to join the Big Two.
- 40:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you could Creighton Creighton would probably jump on it because I mean you get you a drive down the road to Kansas, you know, in Kansas State and stuff like that, right?
- 41:00SPEAKER_07: So, no, I mean I I'm down I just don't want to get crazy with it though.
- 41:05SPEAKER_07: Like, I'm down with it.
- 41:06SPEAKER_07: I see I see where you're going with this.
- 41:08SPEAKER_07: Um, I don't want you to be scared of an odd number, though.
- 41:11SPEAKER_07: We're about to enter a time when we're not gonna be doing divisions, the Big 12 will not be doing divisions, yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: But also you got to think about logistically now Gonzaga's gonna be the only West Coast team in the Big 12, and they are gonna have to go a long ways.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: Hopefully not, it could be some some four-quarter schools, or you could even potentially look at adding like a St.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Mary's or something for basketball only.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: Maybe give them somebody to come with.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: I like I don't know.
- 41:37SPEAKER_04: Craight's not too far from everybody, but you're getting a school that's way out there.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Like BYU is pretty out there, but Gonzaga's way out there.
- 41:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, that they are, but at the same time, if you're adding them as just that sport, you know, just a handful of sports, it's not really a big deal, you know.
- 41:54SPEAKER_07: But um true.
- 41:56SPEAKER_07: Some people have pointed out that, you know, A, you don't want a big East issue.
- 42:00SPEAKER_07: I don't think that'd be the case.
- 42:02SPEAKER_07: Um, and two, what happens when their head coach leaves?
- 42:06SPEAKER_07: You know, because apparently he's been the story of I don't know enough about Gonzaga's basketball history, yeah.
- 42:11SPEAKER_07: But apparently he's been the guy that like that's done this to them.
- 42:15SPEAKER_04: Well, it's not like they it's not like they weren't good before Mark Few, but yeah, he's definitely been there forever.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: And but imagine the conference, a basketball league with Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's stupid.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: That is the that is as as far away.
- 42:36SPEAKER_07: Well, Cincinnati's decent, but like the power of the but apparently Cincinnati's like one of the greatest historical.
- 42:41SPEAKER_07: They've made a couple final fours, yeah, definitely.
- 42:43SPEAKER_07: I mean but like win win count and everything.
- 42:45SPEAKER_07: I think they've won a couple national championships.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but like you're having that is far and away the best basketball conference.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: It is insane.
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: So I'm all for Gonzaga if we're just adding them for basketball.
- 42:56SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm with it too.
- 42:57SPEAKER_07: And especially like I said, I think I think it's a solid baseball program as well.
- 43:01SPEAKER_07: So because I mean we're we're gonna need to get kind of hopefully.
- 43:05SPEAKER_07: I hope the baseball pedigree stays together.
- 43:07SPEAKER_07: I don't know enough about the they have a decent baseball program.
- 43:11SPEAKER_07: I I don't know enough about the new four coming in in their baseball, you know, because hey, tech fans, baseball starts soon.
- 43:18SPEAKER_07: I love baseball time at TechSech.
- 43:19SPEAKER_07: It's such a great thing to throw on a weeknight.
- 43:22SPEAKER_07: Um uh I I I I don't know how great their programs are, and it kind of, you know, with UT going, that's a bit of a blow.
- 43:30SPEAKER_07: They're really great at baseball.
- 43:32SPEAKER_07: Um so I I but didn't Oklahoma make the final?
- 43:36SPEAKER_07: They did.
- 43:37SPEAKER_07: You know, baseball Oklahoma does have a solid baseball program as well, but Oklahoma State's actually the darling in the state when it comes to baseball.
- 43:42SPEAKER_07: Oh, sure, sure.
- 43:43SPEAKER_07: Overall.
- 43:43SPEAKER_07: Um but um I at the same time, I think baseball is one of those sports where you don't really need uh a phenomenal conference to be a true winner.
- 43:52SPEAKER_07: Because whenever you look at some of the national champions when it comes to baseball, you know, you're looking at like some of these random California schools that are nothing conference.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: Differences and such.
- 44:01SPEAKER_07: So it doesn't worry me too much.
- 44:02SPEAKER_07: But I obviously I want to see us play good teams.
- 44:03SPEAKER_07: And I think because I think Tip Todd Tadlock has made a team that's his team.
- 44:07SPEAKER_07: It's not like a Big 12 team.
- 44:09SPEAKER_07: So I just want to see some good teams there.
- 44:11SPEAKER_07: Slight that was just a slight detour on that Gonzaga topic.
- 44:15SPEAKER_07: So I that'd be that'd be cool too.
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: Well, we could end the I don't know.
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: Do you have anything else on expansion?
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: Big 12, Pac-12, Brett Yormark, what you got?
- 44:24SPEAKER_07: Look, it's always fun to talk about it, especially now that uh the Big 12 may be in a driver's seat.
- 44:29SPEAKER_07: We may have the upper hand here.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: And to have Coach Prime in his Colorado buffs back in the Big 12, I think it'd be pretty damn fun.
- 44:37SPEAKER_04: So a trip to Boulder and then a trip to Tempe and all that.
- 44:42SPEAKER_04: That would be so I after spending five days in Arizona, that state rules.
- 44:46SPEAKER_04: It is so much fun.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, obviously it's dry and it's hot and you get sunburned real easily, but it is a fun time.
- 44:53SPEAKER_07: I really think it'd be a great cultural fit.
- 44:55SPEAKER_07: I feel like a Arizona State would have more fun in a Big 12 than a Pac-12.
- 44:59SPEAKER_07: I really do.
- 45:00SPEAKER_07: I just think that because I here in the heartland and in the South and all that, we just care a little more about college sports than they do in those truly professional markets like the West Coast.
- 45:10SPEAKER_07: So I it'll be a lot of fun.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: Let's move on.
- 45:15SPEAKER_04: Speaking of Gonzaga and baseball, Texas Tech Baseball opens their season against Gonzaga.
- 45:22SPEAKER_04: No way! Are you kidding me?
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: It's uh three-game series.
- 45:26SPEAKER_07: They're gonna make an announcement.
- 45:27SPEAKER_04: Um, it is it, it's so I I think Coach Tadlock had an interview today, uh kind of opening up the year and you know, saying who's who and everything.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: He announced uh Friday starter for the pitching stack or for the pitching squad.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: Kyle Robinson's gonna start your Friday night games.
- 45:47SPEAKER_04: Mason Molina, who started uh a good amount last year, is gonna be your Saturday starter.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: And then Bo Blessy, who has the most baseball pitcher name of all time, is gonna be your closer on Sunday.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Not your closer, but your closing starting pitcher on Sundays.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: Um, how are you feeling about baseball?
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: We're not gonna really have kind of a preview, an in-depth look because we're not really baseball guys, but we do love watching Texas Tech baseball.
- 46:11SPEAKER_04: How are you feeling about this year's team?
- 46:13SPEAKER_07: You can never count out a tadlock team.
- 46:15SPEAKER_07: I mean, aren't we coming into the season ranked?
- 46:17SPEAKER_07: Uh we I feel like we always are.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: So there's so many different like ranking systems for baseball.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: Yes, I'm pretty sure we're ranked in most of them.
- 46:25SPEAKER_07: And from what I've read so far, uh, people feel a lot more confident about our pitching situation.
- 46:30SPEAKER_07: And that was that's been an issue for the past couple years, a lot of it due to injury more than anything.
- 46:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so I I I hope to see you know healthy bullpen.
- 46:38SPEAKER_07: Um, and I just gotta say, with well, you you brought up this young man, was it Blissy?
- 46:46SPEAKER_07: Blessy Blessy.
- 46:47SPEAKER_07: Can I just say that Texas Tech, there's no better school in the world than who recruits better names than than Texas Tech University.
- 46:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you know, we always have the best names no matter the sport.
- 46:59SPEAKER_07: Um, but dude, I I like I said, it's just with tadlock, you know you're gonna get a good season no matter what, it'll always be good.
- 47:06SPEAKER_07: And but just now, obviously, the expectation is are you gonna make it to Omaha?
- 47:09SPEAKER_07: And the fun it's always funny when you're talking about like the expectations when it comes to baseball because Omaha is the elite eight, you know, that you're talking about making it to the to the last run in March Madness whenever you're talking about our baseball expectations.
- 47:21SPEAKER_07: So will we get there?
- 47:23SPEAKER_07: I hope so.
- 47:25SPEAKER_07: Um, but obviously we gotta watch the season uh uh unwind from here and see where it goes.
- 47:29SPEAKER_07: And I'm just I'm just really glad because there's really no support to kick back, and uh, especially whenever you're alive to and drinking a beer watching.
- 47:37SPEAKER_07: So I hope Tadlock's got the boys on the diamond ready to go because I know he does.
- 47:41SPEAKER_07: What about what about you?
- 47:42SPEAKER_07: What what are your thoughts whenever you first look at it?
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: You got some fun returners, you got Dylan Carter coming back, you got Hudson White, who was fantastic.
- 47:49SPEAKER_04: He's a preseason all Big 12 player, Ty Coleman, who has been a staple for this team the last few years, he's coming back.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: Um, Mason Molina, obviously, Owen Washburn, who was a kind of a star freshman last year.
- 48:01SPEAKER_04: Um, and you got a you got some pitchers.
- 48:04SPEAKER_04: Now, do I have the most confidence in the pitching core after watching last year?
- 48:10SPEAKER_04: I need to see it to believe it.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: And uh could it happen?
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 48:15SPEAKER_04: Uh Coach Tadlock said he has about six guys that could have started this first weekend for Texas Tech.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: So that's always that.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, you got some you got some inexperience here.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: You got guys coming into their second year, their first year, that type of stuff.
- 48:30SPEAKER_04: But I think for this baseball team to do what they've been doing, you need to have some younger guys step up, which could absolutely happen, but I you know, you don't have Jace Young anymore.
- 48:45SPEAKER_07: I was about to say this is a youngless year.
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: You know, this is a youngless year.
- 48:49SPEAKER_04: This is your first year without a young, and it hurts to not see that last name on the back of the jersey.
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Sure does.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: But you have some guys that can absolutely step up into that role.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: Hudson White is absolutely a guy to watch this year.
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: Um, I think Owen Washburn is kind of going under the radar.
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: He had some moments last year where you were like, oh my god, this is gonna be the next guy.
- 49:08SPEAKER_04: And so um, having him, having Hudson White, having Dylan Carter, who's a guy who can blast it.
- 49:14SPEAKER_04: Um, Ty Coleman, obviously, very consistent at the plate.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: He's always gonna get on base.
- 49:20SPEAKER_04: And you have a pitching staff who I think is pretty deep when you look at it.
- 49:23SPEAKER_04: There's some names here that could absolutely um, you know, lead to a very consistent bunch.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: So um it's just really the fact of just seeing it um before I say absolutely I'm fired up about this team.
- 49:37SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 49:38SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's kind of what baseball goes, man.
- 49:39SPEAKER_07: Like you can you can have the best team on paper and shoot, it just doesn't translate onto the diamond.
- 49:43SPEAKER_07: I obviously can say that about any sport, but baseball is just such a a weird game in that sense.
- 49:48SPEAKER_07: Like you can have a loaded roster, but this team of nobodies can still put it together where they're just better, you know.
- 49:54SPEAKER_07: That's why there's so many wins and uh so many different wins and losses ratios in this in this sport.
- 49:59SPEAKER_07: So, I mean, I'm excited, man.
- 50:00SPEAKER_07: I love when baseball season rolls around.
- 50:02SPEAKER_07: It's just it's it obviously it's an indicator that all this cold weather's going away and America's pastime is about to hit the diamond.
- 50:07SPEAKER_07: We could go drink some cold beer at the minor league park and watch TechSech on the diamond, dude.
- 50:11SPEAKER_07: I'm really excited about it.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: Me too.
- 50:13SPEAKER_04: You still have Tim Tadlock and you still got J Bob.
- 50:16SPEAKER_07: Okay, so you're in it.
- 50:18SPEAKER_07: You're in it, you're into it, you are in the Big 12 champion conversation, and you are in the talk of the greatest show on dirt.
- 50:25SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be fun.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: Baseball season always a good time.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: Um, softball starting three and two, brand new coaching staff.
- 50:32SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, you got you got hopefully a new kind of set of program going um under Coach Craig Snyder.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: And uh they're yeah, three and two to start off.
- 50:42SPEAKER_04: I think we already had a no-no this year, so that's awesome.
- 50:45SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, keep supporting the ladies over there on the softball field, uh, keep supporting the women's basketball team and coach Gurlich.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: They've hit kind of a uh a spurt here, but you know, Big 12 plays tough, and uh hopefully they can rail off a couple wins here to potentially make the tournament, if not, you know, do something in the postseason.
- 51:02SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, uh, two things about these lady programs here.
- 51:05SPEAKER_07: A, I really like the energy that this new softball program has.
- 51:09SPEAKER_07: Like, I really like the hire, I like their presence on social media.
- 51:12SPEAKER_07: I that's I feel like that's so underrated now.
- 51:14SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's in social media isn't new anymore, it's not, and I I just appreciate a coach that tries to engage the fans on social media and tries to get them involved with it and all that because I've been way more invested in the softball program than I think I've ever been as a Texas Tech fan, simply just because of his presence on online.
- 51:32SPEAKER_07: And uh obviously, Krista Gerlik's a queen, and she's got this program on the right path.
- 51:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah, um, we are making huge progress here, like big steps going forward here because Texas Tech women's basketball was down bad.
- 51:47SPEAKER_07: And to see us actually starting to be a threat in a tough conference again is great.
- 51:54SPEAKER_07: I really think that we need to obviously throw all of our support behind her and keep it and just commit to this and keep this going.
- 52:00SPEAKER_07: Um, so I I I'm overall I'm satisfied with uh with the women's programs right now, and I and obviously year one, we haven't even come close to entering conference playing softball, so we have a lot to see before we get going on that.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're on the upswing.
- 52:14SPEAKER_04: You have some really, really good freshmen.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: Bailey Maupin is a star.
- 52:19SPEAKER_04: She's uh she's somebody who I can see going down as one of the best Texas Tech women's basketball players ever.
- 52:25SPEAKER_07: So for her to be as good as she is, we got some we got some good uh names in that list too.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 52:32SPEAKER_07: You know, you gotta literally the goat.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, somebody, you know, named Cheryl Swoops.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: She was pretty good back in the day.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: Um, super excited for the women's programs.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: I think they're both on the upswing uh volleyball as well.
- 52:45SPEAKER_04: Um, but we'll see that come fall.
- 52:47SPEAKER_04: Um but man, good time, good time to be a red raider.
- 52:50SPEAKER_04: A lot of good stuff.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: Zach Thomas in the Hall of Fame.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he finally made it.
- 52:54SPEAKER_04: Good for him.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: Patrick Mahomes, two-time Super Bowl champion.
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: Good times.
- 52:59SPEAKER_07: I mean, uh dude, I saw something kind of crazy as we're winding down the episode here.
- 53:02SPEAKER_07: Let's just kind of talk about bull crab here.
- 53:04SPEAKER_07: Um Patrick Mahomes apparently is the very first Big 12 quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: He's the first Big 12 quarterback to win a playoff game.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: That is unbelievable.
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: He is the first big he was the first Big 12 quarterback to win a playoff game back in whenever his second year in the NFL.
- 53:23SPEAKER_04: In a league.
- 53:24SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, yeah.
- 53:25SPEAKER_07: No, that's I mean, that's it.
- 53:27SPEAKER_07: That's nuts.
- 53:28SPEAKER_07: In a league that has lived and died by the quarterback for at least 15 years, you know, that is unbelievable.
- 53:36SPEAKER_07: The amount of Heisman's that have come out of this league for quarterback, you know, and it's I'm not even just talking about the you know, the typical UTO user.
- 53:43SPEAKER_07: You're talking about like Robert Griffin and all that, like it's a lot of dudes.
- 53:46SPEAKER_04: No, you're seeing you're seeing a real upswing with the Big 12 in the pros, which is huge for the state of the conference that we are in right now.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: We needed this.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: We brought Patrick Mahomes, we needed a Jalen Hurts, we needed a Brock Purdy.
- 53:59SPEAKER_04: You had three guys in the final four teams of the NFL uh playoffs this year that were from the Big 12, and now you can argue Jalen Hurts, Alabama, OU, whatever.
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: He was in the Big 12, as was Patrick Mahomes, as was Brock Purdy.
- 54:12SPEAKER_04: So you really have a good setup right now.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Jordan Brooks is killing it right now in the in the NFL.
- 54:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously, you know, torn ACL, hope he gets back to 100%.
- 54:22SPEAKER_04: Tyree Wilson is going to be a top 10 pick in this year's NFL draft.
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, Texas Tech is trending very much upwards right now.
- 54:31SPEAKER_07: We're going up, dude.
- 54:33SPEAKER_07: We're going up, man.
- 54:34SPEAKER_07: Um no, it it's it's it's awesome to see because I I think it's totally put to bed this whole I haven't seen it in forever, actually.
- 54:42SPEAKER_07: This I remember the a time there was a time and it throw it gets to the retro Big 12 where the words system quarterback were used, and and I think that is dead.
- 54:54SPEAKER_07: I think that term is totally dead.
- 54:56SPEAKER_07: I really just don't see it like anywhere anymore.
- 54:58SPEAKER_07: And I think this this uh Patrick Mahomes just if that was the case, just blew a bazooka hole through whatever the hell that statement was.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, if you don't if you doubt Patrick Mahomes at this point, I don't know what to tell you, man.
- 55:12SPEAKER_07: So were you wearing it?
- 55:14SPEAKER_07: Were you wearing the jersey in in Arizona?
- 55:16SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 55:17SPEAKER_04: We were on we were on event day, we were at the players' tailgate, and I had to represent Stella Artois, and I'm I'm sporting the Patty Mahomes jersey because I had to.
- 55:26SPEAKER_07: Yes, of course.
- 55:27SPEAKER_07: Uh Eagles fans be damned.
- 55:29SPEAKER_07: I mean, and most Texans will be like, yeah, Eagles fans be damned.
- 55:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, there was a ton, uh the definitely majority Eagles fans there.
- 55:38SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 55:38SPEAKER_04: I will say, yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_07: They they probably have a much larger fan base.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: They they show out, they show out, and I mean Kansas City's uh well, it's not like Philadelphia hasn't been there before, they won one in 18.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: So um, but yeah, definitely more Eagles fans than Chiefs fans there.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, last last bit.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: What'd you think of the halftime show?
- 55:57SPEAKER_07: I I I mean, I I was at a party.
- 55:59SPEAKER_07: Uh I was like at a coworker party.
- 56:01SPEAKER_07: It's like it was it was fine.
- 56:03SPEAKER_07: I mean, like, I don't really have a strong opinion about the halftime shows, honestly.
- 56:07SPEAKER_04: Kristen Kristen was very upset with the halftime show.
- 56:10SPEAKER_04: She just she wanted more, she wanted more from Rihanna.
- 56:14SPEAKER_04: She was pregnant.
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: I know, I know, but but if you're pregnant, why are you agreeing to the halftime show?
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: That's kind of the whole deal.
- 56:20SPEAKER_04: I actually love the halftime show, I really do.
- 56:23SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: I just enjoy it when there's when there's big name artists and then.
- 56:27SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, no, I enjoy it.
- 56:28SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's just but I I'm just saying, I don't, I'm like, I'm not like, oh, that sucked.
- 56:31SPEAKER_07: Well, that was awesome.
- 56:32SPEAKER_07: Like, it's no, uh see, when you if I had the choice, it'd be like instead of Chris Ableton doing the national anthem, you would have been doing the halftime show.
- 56:39SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, yeah, but he's but Chris Stapleton's not gonna put on the fireworks show, you know, like crazy.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: So there's like last year's halftime show was unbelievable.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: You get those five guys, like Snoop and Dr.
- 56:51SPEAKER_04: Dre and Kendrick and Eminem.
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: Like, that was hard to beat, but I wanted more from Rihanna because she's coming back.
- 56:58SPEAKER_04: Like, this is her, like, she hasn't made music in a while, she's done a bunch of other things, but I was wanting a little bit more.
- 57:05SPEAKER_04: Obviously, she's pregnant, she can't do all the moves and everything.
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: I wanted some guests, I wanted some like special stuff.
- 57:11SPEAKER_04: There wasn't any guests, I wanted a guest, and it was funny.
- 57:14SPEAKER_07: Like, I asked my students who are uh you know 15 and 16.
- 57:17SPEAKER_07: I was like, Is Riri is Riri still big with y'all?
- 57:20SPEAKER_07: And no uh only one girl raised her hand.
- 57:22SPEAKER_07: She was like, Oh, she's the me.
- 57:24SPEAKER_07: But really, yeah, but everyone else was like, Who are you talking about?
- 57:28SPEAKER_04: Basically, she was huge when you get in like our age range, you get like the 25 to 35 or something, like Rihanna goes hard.
- 57:36SPEAKER_04: Like, I forget how many hits she has until that halftime show, and you're like, Oh shit, okay, yeah, yeah.
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: No, I I remember that one, but no, I I thought it was I thought it was mid, very mid, as the kids say.
- 57:49SPEAKER_04: Well, the game was not, so game ruled.
- 57:53SPEAKER_04: Patty Mahomes.
- 57:54SPEAKER_04: All right, speaking of halftime shows and songs, we're gonna end it off right here with a song of the week.
- 58:01SPEAKER_04: Tristan, what you got?
- 58:03SPEAKER_07: We need this like perfectly an hour, man.
- 58:05SPEAKER_07: Um, all right.
- 58:07SPEAKER_07: So, dude, I'm gonna now that we're back back, tech talking tech's back, and my boy's getting married next week, so maybe it's not quite back.
- 58:14SPEAKER_07: We might be busy.
- 58:16SPEAKER_07: We so maybe we'll have another episode.
- 58:19SPEAKER_07: Back back.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: We're gonna be back eventually.
- 58:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 58:25SPEAKER_07: Um, a lot of career changes between the two of you, you and me.
- 58:28SPEAKER_07: We both got married in this academic year.
- 58:30SPEAKER_07: Um, so but this one is gonna be harkering back to the early stages of the the the podcast when we were when we were basically read a script and didn't know what we were doing.
- 58:40SPEAKER_07: We still don't, we're still stupid, but at least we're doing it more naturally.
- 58:44SPEAKER_07: So, what I'm doing on this is uh I'm gonna go with Rob Baird, a guy you're very familiar with.
- 58:50SPEAKER_07: And crazy enough, this guy has done a really fun project lately.
- 58:54SPEAKER_07: And he this this he's originally from Memphis.
- 58:56SPEAKER_07: Memphis, Tennessee is a wonderful town full of music and great food.
- 58:59SPEAKER_07: I love that place, it's a great place.
- 59:01SPEAKER_07: Um, he's from Memphis, and he did a he's he recorded a record there and influen and mixed in the Memphis sound.
- 59:08SPEAKER_07: And for whenever anyone that doesn't really know what that means, that means blues.
- 59:11SPEAKER_07: That means a little blues rock country uh sound to it.
- 59:14SPEAKER_07: So he redid us all of his a lot of his uh popular old songs into it, including the song he originally did for the very first uh song of the week, Mercy Me, uh, is on this album.
- 59:25SPEAKER_07: I'm not gonna go with that one though.
- 59:26SPEAKER_07: Uh, but I'm it is on this album.
- 59:28SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna go with Dreams and Gasoline.
- 59:31SPEAKER_07: His one of his probably more breakout songs, if you can call him breaking out at all.
- 59:35SPEAKER_07: Um, I love that song.
- 59:36SPEAKER_07: The original version is very good, but this Dreams and Gasoline Memphis Sessions version is awesome.
- 59:41SPEAKER_07: Usually it's a like a it's like a rock and roll twist on it, and it's fantastic.
- 59:45SPEAKER_07: Dreams and gasoline memphis sessions.
- 59:49SPEAKER_06: Will you know we'll be burning dreams and gas only dreams and gasoline.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_04: Rob Baird, a great choice.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_04: He's fantastic.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_04: You introduced me to him.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_04: I think I think it was when you were living in North Austin.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, awesome, awesome pick.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, Rob Baird rules.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_04: If y'all know who he is, he's fantastic.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: Go.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm excited to get a little Memphis twist on it.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: You know, I love the blues.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: Anything that gets a little jazzy, a little bluesy, I am there for it.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: So I'm excited to hear this one.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_04: Um, my song of the week is kind of fitting the theme a little bit, what we're what you're doing a little bit.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: Um, my song of the week.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_04: So I'm going back to San Antonio.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: I am getting married here in the next week and a half.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: I'm extremely excited going back to San Antonio.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, you'll be there, unfortunately.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, but no, um, I I'm feeling a little homesick back in San Antonio.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_04: Uh, my song of the week is homesick by Marcus King Band.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Fantastic jam, really, really bluesy, really jazzy.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: It is a bop, absolute bop.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_04: If you have not heard it, go listen to it right now.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_04: That's homesick, Marcus King Band.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_07: I know you were raving about this band when you saw them live before.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they they opened up to Stapleton.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: They opened up the Stapleton.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_04: I saw them in Biloxi.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_04: They were fantastic.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_04: Have you featured them on this podcast yet?
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: I have.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: I have.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_04: I did their song.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_04: Uh I did Rita Is Gone.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: That's another banger by them.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_04: That was my first one by them, but my second one.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_04: They're fantastic.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: And Marcus King does his own solo stuff, but when he's with his band, he definitely brings up the jazz, brings up the blues a little bit, and it's really, really good live.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_07: All right, man.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_07: I like that we actually had a theme for once rather than me doing this like really twangy country and you going like full-blown hip-hop.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_04: I gotta switch it up a little bit because you do country every time.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_07: But I know, I know.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_04: I gotta I gotta switch it up.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_04: But no, this is a good one.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_07: I don't have any good recommendations otherwise.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_04: These are gonna be the same vibes.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_04: So, uh, for people that like country bluesy, you know, some a little bit of rocky vibes, you'll like these.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_07: By the way, the playlist has been updated.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: Yes, finally, and we'll do it tonight.
