- 1:12Speaker 2: any of the action. Well, I tell you what, folks,
- 1:16Speaker 2: this week we have a guest who I do not
- 1:20Speaker 2: think we'll miss out in the action later on this
- 1:24Speaker 2: year in Dublin. He is the newly crowned Steelers International
- 1:29Speaker 2: Fan of the Year from Dublin. It is an honor
- 1:32Speaker 2: to bring on a guy that igen's aider, a friend
- 1:35Speaker 2: as well, Tom McCormick to this podcast and to welcome
- 1:38Speaker 2: back to the Arish to this podcast. Tom. I tell
- 1:40Speaker 2: you what, lad, I did not think last year last
- 1:43Speaker 2: week even I'd be chatting to you a week guy
- 1:46Speaker 2: from the Combine, Congratulations, how do you feel.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I'm still in a state of shop to some extent,
- 1:52Speaker 3: very excited. You saw the piece on social media Steers
- 1:56Speaker 3: Steelers Ireland and Bush me here in the house and
- 2:00Speaker 3: uh with the promise that talk about the seven game again,
- 2:04Speaker 3: and lo and behold, Stephanie pulls out the phone and
- 2:08Speaker 3: there's a record from Dan Rooney saying, I've been selected
- 2:13Speaker 3: number one and then to represent the Steelers at Global
- 2:16Speaker 3: Nation at the NFL Draft which is coming up in
- 2:19Speaker 3: Green Bay, Wisconsin. And thanks there, Lingers through Chicago. My
- 2:24Speaker 3: wife and I will look forward to meeting and greeting
- 2:26Speaker 3: lots of NFL fans and telling them to get on
- 2:29Speaker 3: an Airlis train and get back here to Dublin for
- 2:32Speaker 3: the Steelers in the autumn.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And look when I seen this year the International Fan
- 2:39Speaker 2: of the Year. Obviously it's the first it's like the
- 2:42Speaker 2: second or third year. What happened. I knew what was
- 2:45Speaker 2: coming in terms of hopefully we'll have a game. I
- 2:47Speaker 2: knew that, and I think I think we have to
- 2:50Speaker 2: give credit to this organization. Tom for people listening, I
- 2:54Speaker 2: believe you're you're definitely in the NFL. You're the first
- 2:57Speaker 2: fan from the Republic of Ireland to be given this award,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but the first fan from Ireland, from the Island of
- 3:02Speaker 2: Ireland for the Steelers to be giving this award. It's
- 3:04Speaker 2: one thing saying that somebody you know. Obviously it was
- 3:07Speaker 2: great to see Stephanie and check out socials, but when
- 3:11Speaker 2: you're sitting there in your kitchen, what does that actually
- 3:14Speaker 2: mean to you because like I could see, like I
- 3:16Speaker 2: see how emotionally we're like that. That's a really special moment. Mate.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It feels like for me, like your fandom of this
- 3:23Speaker 2: team has really culminated in this moment. And I think,
- 3:25Speaker 2: you know, there's hard days, there's great days, but when
- 3:29Speaker 2: you see something that happen, I think it really hits home.
- 3:33Speaker 3: A dream come true. Michael, you know the history. I
- 3:37Speaker 3: went to Florida in seventy nine with the UCD rugby tour.
- 3:40Speaker 3: We enjoyed watching a couple of games on the box
- 3:44Speaker 3: and then thrown around the ball. A few of us
- 3:46Speaker 3: brought a few home and played a bit of game,
- 3:48Speaker 3: a few scrimmages, et cetera, upro UCD and we started
- 3:52Speaker 3: tracking the games in the States and that was the
- 3:54Speaker 3: year the Steelers went for their fourth Super Bowl. And
- 3:57Speaker 3: just to hear and see Cherry brad Shore in action
- 4:01Speaker 3: and Lin Swan and Stalwarth all those you know landmark plays,
- 4:06Speaker 3: you know, we were almost ballet like catches of the
- 4:10Speaker 3: ball in the end zone and stuff like that. And
- 4:13Speaker 3: obviously Frank o'harris rugged rugged running back. US rugby players
- 4:18Speaker 3: could correlate with that. But not so much the passing game.
- 4:21Speaker 3: So we were we were being used and bewildered and
- 4:24Speaker 3: loved it and h then it was a question of
- 4:26Speaker 3: a few of us had developed a voracious appetite. Where
- 4:29Speaker 3: are we going to hear more about this? What can
- 4:32Speaker 3: we do? And there wasn't much there. There was no
- 4:34Speaker 3: mobile phones, no internet. We wouldn't be talking, we wouldn't
- 4:38Speaker 3: even know about each other. But there were magazines coming
- 4:41Speaker 3: in from the UK occasionally an Escence, First Down, Touchdown,
- 4:46Speaker 3: grid Iron, and Quarterback I think were the four magazines.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And you could buy NFL tapes which from the States,
- 4:53Speaker 3: but they would take weeks to get here, so there
- 4:56Speaker 3: were more compilations and things like that. So the the
- 4:59Speaker 3: mid he was scarce, and obviously the Steelers then went
- 5:03Speaker 3: on not too far after that to win two more
- 5:07Speaker 3: Super Bowls. They're fifth and sixth, and so I would
- 5:10Speaker 3: consider my quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, seeing him grow and develop
- 5:14Speaker 3: and mature both as a winning quarterback and then steering
- 5:18Speaker 3: the ship for so long and getting to see his
- 5:20Speaker 3: last game at Hydesfield as was called then was just magical.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So to see the Steelers back here in w but
- 5:26Speaker 3: this time with a regular season points on offer is
- 5:29Speaker 3: going to be something else and a full pro park,
- 5:32Speaker 3: a more modern pro park. It was seventy six thousand
- 5:36Speaker 3: people plus.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you've hit the nil on the head.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I think we have had you on this podcast before
- 5:43Speaker 2: and you've talked about your fandom. I would recommend anybody
- 5:46Speaker 2: on this podcast feed to go back over the last
- 5:48Speaker 2: eight of the episodes and jump on the podcast and
- 5:50Speaker 2: you come on Tom. We'll talk about your fan of
- 5:53Speaker 2: the year war than Louissecond. But it's something that we
- 5:55Speaker 2: haven't even on a personal level, had a chance to
- 5:58Speaker 2: chat about over the last few weeks. We met at
- 5:59Speaker 2: an event before the Super Bowl. We went out and
- 6:02Speaker 2: it was obviously announced if you think from the Steelers'
- 6:07Speaker 2: most reason super Bowl win to now and so not
- 6:10Speaker 2: just how the NFL has changed, but how the world
- 6:12Speaker 2: has changed and it's got way more close together. We
- 6:17Speaker 2: sort of mentioned it there, but the fact that we
- 6:18Speaker 2: are mere months away from a game in Dublin, how
- 6:23Speaker 2: much as a fans I cite you, but also like
- 6:26Speaker 2: as a fan myself of the NFL, I get emotional
- 6:30Speaker 2: to think how that day is going to be at
- 6:32Speaker 2: whatever point it is this year it's going to be
- 6:34Speaker 2: very very special for you. You've been a fan for
- 6:37Speaker 2: a little longer than me. It must it must be
- 6:39Speaker 2: mean an awful lot man.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yeah, forty five years, Michael, not fifty, but yeah, the NFL.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I got you in trouble over there for that. I'm sorry.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Forty five years. Forty five years.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So I'm sixty three, So yeah, I know it's huge
- 6:54Speaker 3: because you've seen the growth and development of the NFL
- 6:56Speaker 3: over the last few years with SkySports, who came on
- 6:58Speaker 3: board around twenty twenty, sky Sports NFL. Before that, we
- 7:03Speaker 3: had Channel four highlights for half an hour the week
- 7:06Speaker 3: after then the rights went to ITV and then onto BBC,
- 7:10Speaker 3: back to Channel four, and it was moving as TV
- 7:14Speaker 3: channels were bought. Bt Sport was bit bought over by TNT.
- 7:18Speaker 3: These things happen in the commercial world. So we were
- 7:21Speaker 3: just looking for regular NFL football. And then, as as
- 7:25Speaker 3: most fans do, they tend to gravitate towards their own team.
- 7:28Speaker 3: So you want to see the Steelers matches. You don't
- 7:30Speaker 3: really want to watch another game. You want to see
- 7:32Speaker 3: how your guys are doing and where the schedule is
- 7:35Speaker 3: is the first thing. The calendar that comes out. I
- 7:37Speaker 3: subscribe to the Post Gazette in Pittsburgh, so I get
- 7:40Speaker 3: all the news online for Diddley Squad every morning, and
- 7:44Speaker 3: hopefully I'll meet some of these journalists now at Green
- 7:48Speaker 3: Bay and meet the faces behind the bylines, which is great,
- 7:51Speaker 3: but from the Steelers point of view, they've done a
- 7:55Speaker 3: lot of work here in the last few years once
- 7:57Speaker 3: they were announced this global marketing program. You and I
- 7:59Speaker 3: have been at some events and crow park both announcements
- 8:03Speaker 3: and events, and then the watch parties two hundred, No
- 8:07Speaker 3: Problem sold out, eight hundred Watch Party, No Problem sold out,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and now the next step is seventy six thousand home game,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and I don't think there be a problem selling out
- 8:17Speaker 3: crow Parker could probably sell it out the following week
- 8:19Speaker 3: as well.
- 8:21Speaker 2: For anybody interested in that game. More information is coming
- 8:24Speaker 2: out soon, but we're looking at NFL dot com slash
- 8:27Speaker 2: Dublin for information on that, so do check that out. Tom,
- 8:33Speaker 2: just talk to us firstly, We're I'm actually going and
- 8:35Speaker 2: people listening to this podcast feed, I'm going to the
- 8:37Speaker 2: NFL Combine this weekend, so do statue for some information
- 8:41Speaker 2: on that there and different interviews hopefully on this podcast network.
- 8:44Speaker 2: An interesting season, the season that brought a lot of promise,
- 8:47Speaker 2: a lot of wins as well. This didn't work out
- 8:48Speaker 2: in the end of As the fan first and foremost,
- 8:51Speaker 2: how do you see the Steelers team going into twenty
- 8:52Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Well, obviously the experts on the ground are already at
- 8:56Speaker 3: the combine omark and the general manager is.
- 8:59Speaker 2: There and be there right now. I know I'll be
- 9:01Speaker 2: there at the end of the week. I promise.
- 9:04Speaker 3: He gave a good pressure earlier and he obviously described
- 9:07Speaker 3: that the main focus would be the quarterback position first
- 9:10Speaker 3: and foremost, and they I think the quote was that
- 9:12Speaker 3: he spoke to russ As people, he spoke with the
- 9:14Speaker 3: Justin Fields people, and everything's in the Harper. Obviously, the
- 9:18Speaker 3: combine is there. There's some people putting in fantastic you
- 9:22Speaker 3: know where forty forty yard dashes, you know, some great
- 9:26Speaker 3: times and stuff like that. The athletes are getting better
- 9:28Speaker 3: every year. A couple of cam Ward would he be
- 9:32Speaker 3: there or something? I don't know. But the people who
- 9:35Speaker 3: have been tracking these fellas for years are the ones
- 9:38Speaker 3: that are obviously got their finger on the pulse and
- 9:41Speaker 3: on the agent's phone to see if they can negotiate
- 9:44Speaker 3: something before Green Bay kicks up on Easter Wednesday.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Absolutely. So it's funny because like we had for for
- 9:51Speaker 2: a lot of last season, there was wins, there was wins,
- 9:54Speaker 2: there was wins, and yes, there was that sort of
- 9:58Speaker 2: ending to the season probably the best way to say it.
- 10:01Speaker 2: It just sort of ended. And I think a lot
- 10:03Speaker 2: of us going into the end of November early December
- 10:05Speaker 2: fourth called we could really be honest in here, but
- 10:07Speaker 2: it's it's having that bones of a team, and it's
- 10:10Speaker 2: having different guys in different positions. It feels like we
- 10:13Speaker 2: need small a judgments, but certainly continuity as well, and
- 10:16Speaker 2: we will get there. And how how positive or how
- 10:21Speaker 2: confident do you feel about the team right now or
- 10:23Speaker 2: do you think it's too early to tell so far
- 10:24Speaker 2: in this off season.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I think there's probably a bit early because obviously the
- 10:28Speaker 3: homework has to be done. They would have seen players
- 10:30Speaker 3: at the Senior Bowl and some of the other bowls
- 10:32Speaker 3: around the states. Now they're into Combine free agency opens up,
- 10:37Speaker 3: so it's still pretty early. They might have seventy seventy
- 10:40Speaker 3: five percent of the team, but I would imagine it's
- 10:42Speaker 3: still a good chunk of twenty twenty five percent to
- 10:45Speaker 3: be filled and as Rob Kan said on the podcast
- 10:48Speaker 3: a few weeks ago, and I obviously much closer to
- 10:51Speaker 3: the to the post than I am. O line, D line,
- 10:54Speaker 3: bigger figures, you know, replicating the Eagles type of Super Bowl,
- 11:00Speaker 3: and maybe we meet more on some some some of
- 11:03Speaker 3: those starting positions and backup positions as well. A few
- 11:08Speaker 3: picks last year got injured more or less in week
- 11:10Speaker 3: one and two when you go after all the work.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But this is what happens. It's a it's a full
- 11:14Speaker 3: contact game, and this this can happen. So I think
- 11:17Speaker 3: we're seventy five percent happy and there's a room for negotiation.
- 11:22Speaker 3: That's what omar Chan is recognized as one of the
- 11:24Speaker 3: top gms in the business, so I'll trust his wisdom
- 11:28Speaker 3: and obviously coach Tomland as well.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I think you're buying on. I think there's a lot
- 11:33Speaker 2: of teams going to Indianapolis right now with that same
- 11:35Speaker 2: optimism as well. And it's not trust to be having
- 11:37Speaker 2: the guys as well. So it's going to be interesting
- 11:39Speaker 2: to see what happens for people listening hoping to get
- 11:41Speaker 2: so I rock in the Indianapolis early on Friday, So
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm hoping it's some conversations and I'm going to hop
- 11:47Speaker 2: on a few Steelers radios, so do check it out
- 11:50Speaker 2: for that folks hopefully get a chance to meet Rob
- 11:52Speaker 2: as well. And thank you for your kind words on
- 11:53Speaker 2: that podcast as well. Tom. I remember the first time
- 11:57Speaker 2: we've done this podcast for the Steels, you show me
- 12:00Speaker 2: your ball from the game in nineteen ninety seven. I'm
- 12:04Speaker 2: not asking you to get that now, Tom, but you
- 12:06Speaker 2: know that's almost thirty years ago. And it's one thing
- 12:09Speaker 2: talking about how exciting this game is just but I
- 12:11Speaker 2: think outside of that, and this is maybe a conversation
- 12:13Speaker 2: to be had in later months this year, but Tom,
- 12:17Speaker 2: talk to us about how you feel this team is
- 12:18Speaker 2: right now in the ways that you see going forward
- 12:21Speaker 2: that are really important as we enter an off season
- 12:24Speaker 2: of change but also an off season of opportunity for
- 12:25Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh theaters.
- 12:26Speaker 3: It's going to be special. Obviously, the NFL have moved
- 12:30Speaker 3: internationally in their marketing with Brett Gosper, former CEO of
- 12:35Speaker 3: World Rugby and all the guys in the London office
- 12:37Speaker 3: that have been over to the Dublin events and the
- 12:39Speaker 3: Flag Football Championships and Limerick Lass and twenty twenty three,
- 12:44Speaker 3: but from the Steelers point of view, changed the quarterback
- 12:46Speaker 3: room big time at this time last year, and they
- 12:48Speaker 3: might do the same again this year. Again, we have
- 12:51Speaker 3: to leave that up to the people who know who
- 12:53Speaker 3: know best. I do think it's obviously a question mark,
- 12:57Speaker 3: apparently on Nagie Harris. So we've got to look at
- 12:59Speaker 3: things like salary caps and all the other things that
- 13:02Speaker 3: go on. And yet the Eagles won the Super Bowl
- 13:05Speaker 3: sick one body made it. Barkley made a huge impression
- 13:09Speaker 3: on that winning trail for the Eagles, and suddenly running
- 13:13Speaker 3: backs might be back in favor again with a more
- 13:16Speaker 3: strengthened physical game rather than a passing game, which might
- 13:19Speaker 3: have been the case a season or two prior to that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: So I think we might be going back to a
- 13:24Speaker 3: more physical game and more running backs. So let's let's
- 13:28Speaker 3: see what develops in the combine. Let's see what the
- 13:30Speaker 3: homework has been done on the senior Bowl, see who
- 13:32Speaker 3: comes into free agency, and again the all important salary cap,
- 13:36Speaker 3: who can be renegotiated, bought in or else released.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Time is going to tell you the funny thing is,
- 13:46Speaker 2: tom Time is going to fly in this offseason and
- 13:48Speaker 2: before we know it, we're going to be at the
- 13:50Speaker 2: start of the season on a mere weeks away from
- 13:52Speaker 2: this doubling game, and we're only a couple of we're
- 13:55Speaker 2: about five or six weeks away from the NFL Draft,
- 13:58Speaker 2: probably with six or seven weeks actually away from the
- 14:00Speaker 2: NFL Draft in Green Bay. First off, congratulations to you
- 14:04Speaker 2: and your family on that accolade. I think it's fitting
- 14:07Speaker 2: of the Steers organization that you've been given this award.
- 14:09Speaker 2: And I'm talking not just somebody that presents this podcast
- 14:12Speaker 2: for the Steelers in Ireland, but as that works in
- 14:15Speaker 2: the game in Ireland that loves the game. I can't
- 14:17Speaker 2: think of anybody else that deserves it as much as you,
- 14:20Speaker 2: So I hope you enjoy it. I hope you have
- 14:23Speaker 2: a great time when you get out there to the
- 14:24Speaker 2: States over the next few weeks, and I'm sure we'll
- 14:27Speaker 2: be able to meet and chat and get together and
- 14:30Speaker 2: talk about your experiences there. And certainly it's a historic
- 14:34Speaker 2: NFL draft and the fact that it's in Green Bay
- 14:36Speaker 2: as well, so it's going to be really really different
- 14:38Speaker 2: and really really fun. But just to you as well,
- 14:40Speaker 2: for people listening, I said it yesterday. For people listening,
- 14:44Speaker 2: Tom has not just been a Steelers fan for his life.
- 14:47Speaker 2: But you've been extremely supportive of events with the Steers
- 14:51Speaker 2: obviously and events that we have done outside of that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So believe me when I say it's very very much appreciated.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And I hope you realize what you have done for
- 15:01Speaker 2: the game here as well, and the support that you've
- 15:03Speaker 2: done as well. On a cold Saturday morning or a
- 15:06Speaker 2: Friday even you know, thank you, Tom for what you
- 15:09Speaker 2: have done. And this is only the beginning, you know, man,
- 15:11Speaker 2: it's going to be a really, really exciting year.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Well, thank you, Michael for your huge help in growing
- 15:18Speaker 3: and developing the game here across the thirty two counties
- 15:21Speaker 3: on this island. It's phenomenal. As I say, I've been
- 15:25Speaker 3: delighted to see it grow and develop. The amateur game
- 15:28Speaker 3: U see and the Rebels start the AFI season next Saturday.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I'll be there on the sideline and you know that's
- 15:35Speaker 3: a very good standard. People want to go and have
- 15:37Speaker 3: a look at their games. And Belfast, craig Avon, Wherever, Dublin, Blimerick, Cork,
- 15:42Speaker 3: there are teams there Westmead. So there's loads of good
- 15:45Speaker 3: American football to watch between now and the start of
- 15:47Speaker 3: the pro season. Coming up at the end of August,
- 15:52Speaker 3: beginning of September Labor Day and preseason games, and then
- 15:55Speaker 3: into the first second Sunday of September, we're back into
- 15:58Speaker 3: the NFL. I mean, Sunday nights just aren't the same
- 16:01Speaker 3: without the NFL, that's for sure.
- 16:04Speaker 2: It's either that or that or watching Dance with the Stars, Tom,
- 16:06Speaker 2: I'll tell you that, just finally, and just on that point,
- 16:12Speaker 2: go out and sport, Go out and support your local team.
- 16:14Speaker 2: And I know those Deelers will agree with that as well,
- 16:15Speaker 2: Like that's great to see the season starting up again.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And we'll just take this opportunity Tom as well, to
- 16:20Speaker 2: wish all the teams. They're very, very best love of
- 16:22Speaker 2: people that love the game. I know Alan low Masny,
- 16:25Speaker 2: who is the head of AFI, is a great friend
- 16:27Speaker 2: of this podcast, and we appreciate the work that all
- 16:30Speaker 2: you guys, everybody involved with with the domestic game dolls
- 16:32Speaker 2: as well, and it really helps. I don't think we'd
- 16:34Speaker 2: be in a position now where we are with how
- 16:36Speaker 2: people like that as well, So a massive thanks to
- 16:38Speaker 2: them as well. Tom. Just just finally, imagine it's fall,
- 16:41Speaker 2: it's autumn. You're in Crooker and you see the terrible tiles.
