- 2:09Speaker 5: Chili of that. Dave Rutcker is one of the folks
- 2:11Speaker 5: and he joins us now, Dave, welcome to the show.
- 2:14Speaker 7: Thanks for having me, sir.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Well, and I'm gonna go ahead. I didn't tell you
- 2:18Speaker 5: this ahead of time. We're joined in studio by Steve
- 2:20Speaker 5: Animal from ninety eight to seven the Mountain.
- 2:23Speaker 7: That's always a lively event.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Yeah, so you know, we normally run a delay, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 5: on the show anyway, and Ryan, our producers, so should
- 2:30Speaker 5: I run double delay today? Said yes, I'm.
- 2:35Speaker 7: Running live from my classroom. So I got I got
- 2:37Speaker 7: seven kids sitting here listening in on our interview today.
- 2:40Speaker 8: All right, we're family.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Calm down, then, Steve, all right, two days away, mister
- 2:46Speaker 5: Rucker from one of Saint Albans premiere events, is gonna
- 2:50Speaker 5: be a whole lot of people. Their weather is going
- 2:51Speaker 5: to be absolutely fantastic. Talk about where the proceeds go
- 2:55Speaker 5: and just talk about the day in general.
- 2:58Speaker 7: Proceeds are all sat all with Police Department Canine Unit
- 3:02Speaker 7: Bonnie and the dog and the unit itself is where
- 3:07Speaker 7: all of it initiated, and that's where our funds all
- 3:10Speaker 7: started from the beginning, we've branched out and grown a
- 3:13Speaker 7: little bit over the years. So now we're looking into
- 3:16Speaker 7: assistant youth and education programs within Saint Albans Star Club
- 3:20Speaker 7: Project graduations, you know, things that the schools need, the
- 3:24Speaker 7: students need. Trying to fill in those voids and help
- 3:27Speaker 7: out theirs as we can make sure that we have
- 3:30Speaker 7: a safe community and educated youth coming up and a
- 3:33Speaker 7: good future to lead our community in the years to come.
- 3:36Speaker 7: And moving forward, the day itself again a whole lot
- 3:41Speaker 7: of community coming together, building and with the whole purpose
- 3:45Speaker 7: of giving back out to exactly what we just mentioned.
- 3:48Speaker 7: But we do that by Chili Chili, Chilly Chili all
- 3:52Speaker 7: over down the street, up the street, Fall Beest type
- 3:55Speaker 7: of events attraction. The music will be there. We have
- 3:59Speaker 7: live starts at twelve thirty. At twelve o'clock we kick
- 4:02Speaker 7: off Mastery on Main Street where we recognize all of
- 4:05Speaker 7: our kids who achieve Mastery on the standardized testing. At
- 4:09Speaker 7: twelve thirty we have the heavy Hitter State State. At
- 4:12Speaker 7: two o'clock Anderson road Band, and at four o'clock is
- 4:15Speaker 7: the Groove Brothers who are an Alman Brothers tribute band,
- 4:19Speaker 7: so very much a funk style music that'll be playing
- 4:22Speaker 7: on Main Street lively, very much enjoyable, food vendors, all
- 4:27Speaker 7: the fun.
- 4:28Speaker 8: Yeah, it'll be a riot too. And you like beer,
- 4:33Speaker 8: you don't like I do. They'll be craft beer vendors,
- 4:36Speaker 8: all sorts of vendors on the street. Steven Keith, the
- 4:39Speaker 8: food Guy, one of our judges for the Chili Cookoff.
- 4:43Speaker 8: If you are cooking five hundred bucks first place, which
- 4:46Speaker 8: is pretty awesome, second place three hundred, third place two hundred,
- 4:50Speaker 8: and the People's Choice award will also happen of course,
- 4:55Speaker 8: ninety eight seven the Mountain. We'll be there, and I
- 4:58Speaker 8: believe Diamond, Dave and Lan all his hair will be there,
- 5:01Speaker 8: just not in your food.
- 5:02Speaker 5: So yeah, looking forward to it, kind of avoid that,
- 5:06Speaker 5: wouldn't miss it. And if somebody is listening right now,
- 5:09Speaker 5: David and they are not a chili person, there's all
- 5:11Speaker 5: kinds of other food there too, right.
- 5:14Speaker 7: Yeah, we have we have other food vendors that will
- 5:16Speaker 7: be out on the street as well, just your regular
- 5:19Speaker 7: type of food, truck style foods, and then we also
- 5:22Speaker 7: have a ton of That's the other thing I love
- 5:24Speaker 7: about this organization in this event it allows For example,
- 5:28Speaker 7: Hayes Volleyball will be out there, Saint Albans Youth Football,
- 5:32Speaker 7: Saint Alban's High School football, all these organizations will be
- 5:35Speaker 7: out there doing their own little fundraisers, but contributing to
- 5:39Speaker 7: our big event fundraiser. So they'll be out there with
- 5:42Speaker 7: all the false flavors and those tastes, you know, Pepperoni
- 5:45Speaker 7: rolls of course, but I think we got a few
- 5:47Speaker 7: grilled cheese vendors out there. Who doesn't like a grilled
- 5:50Speaker 7: cheese with their pottages? So yeah, there'll be food galore
- 5:55Speaker 7: and stuff for kids. We got have some some attractions
- 5:58Speaker 7: going on for them as well. It'll be a full
- 6:01Speaker 7: family event all the way up and down the street.
- 6:03Speaker 5: It always is, and it's always great because it's right
- 6:05Speaker 5: there on Old Main. And I'm I'm legitimately saying, I mean,
- 6:08Speaker 5: at any given time, especially with the weather as nice
- 6:11Speaker 5: as it's going to be, Marshall's off this weekend. WVU
- 6:14Speaker 5: plays on Friday night, so that that kind of worked
- 6:18Speaker 5: out in your favor a little bit. I mean, there's
- 6:19Speaker 5: legitimately five hundred thousand people there, I mean legit, Steve
- 6:23Speaker 5: would do we agree with that?
- 6:24Speaker 8: Yeah, it's going to be a packed street and if
- 6:25Speaker 8: you're looking for some fun, just get out. The weather's
- 6:27Speaker 8: going to be fabulous for the next five days. Saturday
- 6:30Speaker 8: is going to be no exception. And Saint Albans actually
- 6:33Speaker 8: offers a lot of other things for you to eat aresa.
- 6:37Speaker 8: You know, we've got the Cafe, We've got Drummis, we
- 6:39Speaker 8: have Shuckers, we have the Tap, we have Cole River Coffee,
- 6:42Speaker 8: and we have Cosmeo Mexican restaurant, just some of the
- 6:45Speaker 8: restaurants that are right there in the region.
- 6:47Speaker 5: So, yeah, a lot of good stuff. Go ahead.
- 6:50Speaker 7: Day shut down during these will be enjoyable as well.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a and so again, if chili is not
- 6:58Speaker 5: your thing, you can you can dump in over to
- 7:01Speaker 5: talk to Guy and the folks at Shuckers. Get some
- 7:03Speaker 5: of those crab stuff mushrooms, go to the cafe and
- 7:06Speaker 5: get you or get your wings dipped and grilled, which
- 7:08Speaker 5: is the way to get them there at the Camfeg.
- 7:10Speaker 8: And I'll be on tour on the street, so if
- 7:12Speaker 8: you'd like to buy me a drink and all of
- 7:13Speaker 8: these establish it, I'll be more than happy to join you.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yeah, he's easy that way. The Dave Island showing five
- 7:20Speaker 5: Adylive is broad to you part by Morgan and Morgan
- 7:22Speaker 5: with more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They believe that
- 7:24Speaker 5: when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan to Morgan, America's
- 7:26Speaker 5: the largest injury law firm. All right now, if people
- 7:28Speaker 5: want to enter the chili contest, is is it too
- 7:33Speaker 5: late for that day?
- 7:34Speaker 7: Well, if they are a chili cooker only, I would
- 7:38Speaker 7: still find a spot. Our street is pretty full right now.
- 7:41Speaker 7: But if you're cooking chili, I'll always find room to
- 7:44Speaker 7: put a chili cooker somewhere on the street. We'll fit
- 7:47Speaker 7: you in. We'll make the space because we're always looking
- 7:50Speaker 7: for that. If you do want to register for a
- 7:52Speaker 7: chili cooker so, you can go to fall y'all Chili
- 7:54Speaker 7: Cookoff dot com or Saint Albans Fallyall Festival Chili Cookoff
- 7:58Speaker 7: on Facebook and you can get to the link through
- 8:01Speaker 7: there that will take you to the registration. Like I said,
- 8:05Speaker 7: chili only. And also let me point out if you
- 8:08Speaker 7: want to be a People's choice judge, you know when
- 8:11Speaker 7: you come and taste the chili, it's one dollar a
- 8:13Speaker 7: ticket to taste of each vendor one dollar per vendor.
- 8:19Speaker 7: If you pay ten dollars, you'll get twelve tickets and
- 8:22Speaker 7: you'll get two chips and the opportunity to be the
- 8:25Speaker 7: judge one of the people's choice judges. You drop the
- 8:28Speaker 7: chip in whichever one you like and you vote for
- 8:31Speaker 7: them as your faith. So you can also have fun
- 8:34Speaker 7: in the judging aspect while walking the street as well.
- 8:37Speaker 5: And let me tell you, take the people that enter
- 8:40Speaker 5: the actual competition, they take this very seriously. And I
- 8:43Speaker 5: got an opportunity last year to be a judge or
- 8:45Speaker 5: a few of us. And I like the fact too
- 8:46Speaker 5: that you have different judges every year. You mentioned Steven
- 8:48Speaker 5: keep the food guy or Buddy from the Gazette Mail
- 8:51Speaker 5: is going to be there. One of my favorite people
- 8:52Speaker 5: in the world, Merrily mccaulliffe from WWKTV thirteen is going
- 8:56Speaker 5: to be there. Who are the other judges?
- 8:58Speaker 7: We got Walt Hall will beaudging with this. We've got
- 9:01Speaker 7: Rob Real, we'll be judging with our man Yeah, and
- 9:06Speaker 7: a guest citizen judge, and also Saint Alban's High School principal,
- 9:11Speaker 7: Jerk the Swingo will be one of our judges as well.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Nice and I'm gonna be uh. I volunteer to help
- 9:17Speaker 5: with the judging, and the reason I explained this on
- 9:19Speaker 5: the air a couple of days ago, David. One of
- 9:21Speaker 5: the reasons I volunteered to do that is because as
- 9:23Speaker 5: the judge, you know, and I'll judge a lot of
- 9:25Speaker 5: chili competitions, you only get you know, one, one or
- 9:29Speaker 5: two bites and then they just put it aside. Well,
- 9:32Speaker 5: somebody is going to have to do something, uh with
- 9:35Speaker 5: that other extra with the extra chili there. So I mean,
- 9:39Speaker 5: I'm I'm there, I'm there for it.
- 9:41Speaker 7: Okay, Well I might we can maybe share, okay, dodging.
- 9:47Speaker 5: I don't share well, but.
- 9:50Speaker 7: We can try. I'll try. I'm teaching my children how
- 9:53Speaker 7: to share, so we'll make an effort at share in
- 9:55Speaker 7: a little bit.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Of chili keep them away from animal. Then, hey, Dave,
- 9:59Speaker 5: I appreciate you would taking time out of your schedule
- 10:01Speaker 5: to call us up about the event and give us
- 10:03Speaker 5: the rundown again where people can learn.
- 10:04Speaker 7: More at fall Y'all Chili Cookoff dot com or Saint
- 10:09Speaker 7: Albans fall Y'all Chili Cookoff or St. Alban's fall Y'all
- 10:12Speaker 7: Festival Chili Cookoff on Facebook.
- 10:14Speaker 5: And again if people just want to come out and
- 10:16Speaker 5: just hang out, just to come on the streets of
- 10:18Speaker 5: Saint Albans. I mean, we're trying to raise a little
- 10:20Speaker 5: money for the canine unit there of the Saint Albans
- 10:21Speaker 5: Police Department, but just to come out on the street.
- 10:24Speaker 5: It's free, just to come hang out, hang out and
- 10:26Speaker 5: check out the music.
- 10:27Speaker 7: Yep, environment music, the great great sights and all going on.
- 10:32Speaker 7: Enjoy community, family, friends, come on out joint.
- 10:36Speaker 5: All right, Hey, Dave, we'll let you get back to it.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here. Man, Thanks a lot.
- 10:40Speaker 7: Thank kid.
- 10:45Speaker 5: All right, it is nine seventeen. We've got to get
- 10:48Speaker 5: him back there to educating those young minds.
- 10:50Speaker 8: So but terrible waste.
- 10:52Speaker 5: But yeah, because you're end up in radio so like
- 10:55Speaker 5: Steve and I. But but we have a good time
- 10:56Speaker 5: at these events. And again, I know you're very you're
- 10:58Speaker 5: mister Saint Albans, very ingrained in the community.
- 11:01Speaker 8: How long have you been in Sant Albans September seventeenth,
- 11:04Speaker 8: thirty five years. I thought i'd be here a year,
- 11:07Speaker 8: and here here I am.
- 11:08Speaker 9: Here you are.
- 11:08Speaker 8: What what do you enjoy about Saint Albans so much?
- 11:11Speaker 8: It's off the Beaten Path a little bit. You know,
- 11:13Speaker 8: it's not easy access to get to the interstate. And
- 11:16Speaker 8: I say that, but it's you know, you're five minutes away.
- 11:18Speaker 8: You go over the bridge, you go down through Nitro Institute,
- 11:22Speaker 8: you hop on and boom. I leave Saint Albans and
- 11:25Speaker 8: coming to Charleston daily orgo back and forth. It's about
- 11:28Speaker 8: a twelve to fifteen minute ride.
- 11:30Speaker 6: That's it.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Yah.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Get to listen to some music and you know, you
- 11:33Speaker 5: know there's a microphone in front of you, right, Have
- 11:35Speaker 5: you ever been behind behind a microphone before a text?
- 11:40Speaker 5: Because you are so ingrained the community. Before we let
- 11:42Speaker 5: you go, there was a text here and I wanted
- 11:45Speaker 5: to ask you about this because you're mister Saint Albans.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Somebody asking why more events aren't held at the Saint
- 11:49Speaker 5: Albans Mall lot.
- 11:51Speaker 8: I believe that's due to the ownership of the mall lot,
- 11:55Speaker 8: so they don't necessarily the liability, the insurance and other
- 11:58Speaker 8: things that would be nice if they were more community oriented,
- 12:01Speaker 8: but you know they choose not to have that issue
- 12:04Speaker 8: on their.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Lot, right, And I mean, and I don't know the
- 12:07Speaker 5: situation that sounds logical from what you're saying there, but
- 12:10Speaker 5: there is a big liability when you have events like this,
- 12:12Speaker 5: and sometimes cities you know, can can I mean, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 5: when you have it downtown, it's a little bit more
- 12:17Speaker 5: manageable for the cities. But I mean it's a good point,
- 12:19Speaker 5: would be a good a good place to do something
- 12:21Speaker 5: they had.
- 12:22Speaker 8: In the past. I think years ago when I first
- 12:25Speaker 8: got here, I was in the dunk tank for the
- 12:27Speaker 8: Saint Albans Police Department fundraiser and they did have it
- 12:31Speaker 8: like on the Kroger side lot back when right Aid
- 12:34Speaker 8: was there back in the day. But I just think,
- 12:37Speaker 8: you know, for manageability, it's private properties.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Right And one of the things I like about what
- 12:41Speaker 5: David said is that the businesses we mentioned, the coffee
- 12:45Speaker 5: shop and the cafe and Chucker, they're all going to
- 12:47Speaker 5: be open their normal hours and so you got that
- 12:50Speaker 5: many people there. Eventually people are going to go in
- 12:53Speaker 5: and they're going to go into some of those establishments
- 12:55Speaker 5: and you know, grab some other stuff maybe that's not
- 12:57Speaker 5: on the street or whatever. Relax a little bit. So
- 13:00Speaker 5: hats off to them, because sometimes businesses don't want to
- 13:02Speaker 5: open during those events, but most of most are open.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Most of them are I.
- 13:06Speaker 8: Mean it's really a neat Main Street there. A lot
- 13:09Speaker 8: of things have reopened, so come check it out Saturday.
- 13:12Speaker 8: It's gonna be a great day to get out in
- 13:13Speaker 8: a bout.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, get a plug in for tonight. You're
- 13:16Speaker 5: going to be downtown at five Street.
- 13:18Speaker 8: Right, yes, five Street brewing right there on the corners
- 13:20Speaker 8: of Fife and Summer across from city Center. There's live
- 13:23Speaker 8: music out there this evening. Of course, the weather's going
- 13:26Speaker 8: to be great, so you can sit outside. Come hungry.
- 13:28Speaker 8: I'll have Mountain merch. We'll have some gift certificates to
- 13:31Speaker 8: give away, flowers from our flowers and dunbar and just
- 13:34Speaker 8: a good time. Maybe you don't want to go to
- 13:36Speaker 8: work tomorrow, join me. I will make sure that happens.
- 13:38Speaker 8: But you have to be on the air tomorrow morning
- 13:40Speaker 8: at six. You know, realize that shut.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Your dirty mouth. Steve Animal from ninety eight to seven
- 13:45Speaker 5: a mountain and again we are going to be there,
- 13:47Speaker 5: myself an Animal, and we more than likely Shockley is
- 13:49Speaker 5: going to be there. He just kind of shows up
- 13:51Speaker 5: wherever we are. Shock Shockley and his hair will be
- 13:53Speaker 5: there as well. Will be on the streets of Saint
- 13:55Speaker 5: Albans for fall, y'all, It's not going to really feel
- 13:58Speaker 5: that much like fall, but it's okay because it beats
- 14:00Speaker 5: the alternative in here in a couple of months when
- 14:01Speaker 5: we've got snow and sleet and locusts and petulants and
- 14:05Speaker 5: you know whatever. So what are you talking about?
- 14:07Speaker 3: Well?
- 14:08Speaker 5: Enjoy it, Steve, I appreciate it, man. Thanks a lot

- 17:11Speaker 5: Something you've been in the new digs here it is.
- 17:13Speaker 14: This is super fancy. I love what you've done with

- 17:17Speaker 5: I wish I could take credit for it, but I
- 17:19Speaker 5: held the door open once when they were hoping when
- 17:21Speaker 5: bringing some stuff in there.
- 17:22Speaker 14: Is helpful as I.
- 17:23Speaker 5: That's pretty much the extent of it, all right, So
- 17:27Speaker 5: you know we have I'll always have fun on the show,
- 17:28Speaker 5: but sometimes you have to get serious for just a
- 17:30Speaker 5: little bit. So this will be some of this segment
- 17:32Speaker 5: talk about the issue with domestic violence in America.
- 17:35Speaker 14: So domestic violence, we are all of the folks in
- 17:41Speaker 14: domestic violence are really struggling right now. We're seeing cut
- 17:46Speaker 14: to all of our funding across the board. So now
- 17:50Speaker 14: we need folks support really more than ever. The victims
- 17:55Speaker 14: need that. We want to be able to provide seamless
- 18:00Speaker 14: services and everything that we've always done, and we're seeing
- 18:05Speaker 14: the numbers stay about the same, if not increase, but
- 18:09Speaker 14: with less funding than we've ever had. So it's really
- 18:13Speaker 14: really difficult and we're trying to continue to do what
- 18:17Speaker 14: we do, and what we do we do really well,
- 18:20Speaker 14: and we want to be able to continue that. So
- 18:23Speaker 14: we're seeing more and more folks that are one pay
- 18:28Speaker 14: check away from losing housing that we have helped stabilize
- 18:35Speaker 14: in the past. We're seeing more folks here in Kanall County.
- 18:39Speaker 14: We get ten percent of the state's domestic violence petitions,
- 18:43Speaker 14: so we have advocates right there frontline that are busier
- 18:48Speaker 14: than they've ever been. I wish I had to say
- 18:53Speaker 14: there were positive changes. We're not really seeing that. But
- 18:57Speaker 14: we're still out there continuing to bring awareness and do
- 19:01Speaker 14: the best we can to serve everyone that needs us.
- 19:04Speaker 5: And that's what this month is about. Because the show
- 19:08Speaker 5: several times in the past, you've talked about the different
- 19:09Speaker 5: programs that you offered. We'll talk about the funding for
- 19:12Speaker 5: a moment, and I know we want to be you know,
- 19:15Speaker 5: we want to want to do this the right way.
- 19:17Speaker 5: But but you said, you know your funds are are
- 19:20Speaker 5: are dwindling or going down a little bit wise.
- 19:22Speaker 14: Though, absolutely.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So.
- 19:26Speaker 14: We're just seeing changes under the current government, I guess,
- 19:33Speaker 14: especially in some of the funds that we receive are
- 19:37Speaker 14: commingled in with funds that are considered for our un
- 19:43Speaker 14: housed neighbors. And I guess what folks sometimes don't realize
- 19:48Speaker 14: is many of the folks that we serve through with
- 19:52Speaker 14: domestic violence, they are homeless. They have left their house
- 19:57Speaker 14: for their own safety. So when we he cuts to
- 20:01Speaker 14: homeless services, that affects us as well. So you know,
- 20:08Speaker 14: we've had news recently that we're looking at about a
- 20:11Speaker 14: nine hundred thousand dollars cut in the state for services
- 20:16Speaker 14: for homeless services, but that also affects us and that's
- 20:23Speaker 14: funding that we use to stabilize sixty families. So that's
- 20:29Speaker 14: what that means is without that funding, those folks that
- 20:34Speaker 14: move out of shelter. We are so proud of ourselves
- 20:37Speaker 14: that we've been able to move folks from shelter into
- 20:40Speaker 14: their own permanent housing and a year after our assistance ends,
- 20:44Speaker 14: eighty three percent of those are still in their houses.
- 20:48Speaker 14: So if that funding goes away, that next step for
- 20:52Speaker 14: when folks leave shelter is completely gone.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Yeah, because the shelter was never designed to stay there permit.
- 20:59Speaker 14: That's an emerge see right, And so what that means
- 21:03Speaker 14: is without that funding, folks are in our shelter for
- 21:06Speaker 14: so much longer. Which means it's harder to get in.
- 21:11Speaker 14: So it just has a trickle down effect of one
- 21:15Speaker 14: small thing affects the bigger hole, and so there are
- 21:19Speaker 14: some unintended consequences for some of these some funding.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm talking to Julie Britton again from the HYEWCA
- 21:27Speaker 5: Result program nine twenty eight at Dave Island Show on
- 21:29Speaker 5: five Any Live. Brought to you imparted by Pinnacle Consultants.

- 21:44Speaker 5: dot net. Because what you don't know can't hurt you.
- 21:46Speaker 5: You mentioned something there that I thought was interesting, and
- 21:49Speaker 5: I think sometimes we forget, you know, we all get
- 21:51Speaker 5: in our head, you know what domestic violence is, or
- 21:55Speaker 5: who the victims are or in some cases who the
- 21:57Speaker 5: perpetrators are. The right we have, we have this image.
- 22:00Speaker 5: We forget sometimes how families are involved in domestic violence.
- 22:04Speaker 5: It's just not about the lady or the man, because
- 22:07Speaker 5: it does go both ways. And we'll talk about that
- 22:09Speaker 5: and just in a bit, but it's not There are
- 22:13Speaker 5: others many many times, but probably the majority of your cases,
- 22:16Speaker 5: there's more than just that person involved.
- 22:19Speaker 14: Right, absolutely. We see we've actually seen more kids and
- 22:23Speaker 14: families this year than in my eight years at the
- 22:28Speaker 14: WHY through shelter. So we're talking about families that have
- 22:35Speaker 14: left their house with absolutely nothing and we're that safety
- 22:40Speaker 14: net and it really does it effects. So then you're
- 22:46Speaker 14: talking the effects on the school system, getting kids into
- 22:50Speaker 14: the schools where they their homeschools and than just trying
- 22:57Speaker 14: to stabilize them. Especially if you have a large family,
- 23:02Speaker 14: finding housing is always an issue.
- 23:05Speaker 5: So well, yeah, there's so many things that go along
- 23:07Speaker 5: with that. There's pets involved sometimes, you know, you've got
- 23:10Speaker 5: I mean, oh absolutely, I mean I'm an animal person
- 23:12Speaker 5: and you know me too. My animals are are are
- 23:15Speaker 5: the are part of the family, and so to go
- 23:17Speaker 5: somewhere that I can't take the animals, so right, yes, and.
- 23:20Speaker 14: That that's the thing as well. You know we're seeing
- 23:22Speaker 14: one bedroom apartments renting for one thousand dollars and no
- 23:26Speaker 14: pets allowed. That's it's a big hurdle that that we
- 23:31Speaker 14: face every day.
- 23:32Speaker 5: What's the biggest misconception about domestic violence because I said
- 23:36Speaker 5: to you earlier that we forget sometimes men are also
- 23:39Speaker 5: victims of this. What's some of the some of the
- 23:41Speaker 5: biggest misconceptions.
- 23:42Speaker 14: You say that it only happens to folks that don't
- 23:47Speaker 14: have money, and I guess the biggest conception, Well, the
- 23:55Speaker 14: biggest thing I wish that people would stop saying is
- 23:58Speaker 14: why doesn't she just leave? Because it's so incredibly difficult.
- 24:03Speaker 14: I think when you understand, asking someone to leave means
- 24:08Speaker 14: asking them to give up their home, oftentimes their pets.
- 24:14Speaker 14: Knowing that moving their kids from what some folks use
- 24:17Speaker 14: as stable home to a shelter, it's going to be
- 24:21Speaker 14: a huge red flag for let's say CPS, the school system.
- 24:29Speaker 14: There are so many questions that are issues that go
- 24:32Speaker 14: along with why didn't she just leave? You know, it's
- 24:35Speaker 14: also victim blaming, but that's that's one. And then also
- 24:42Speaker 14: believing that once they have left that everything's just magically better.
- 24:49Speaker 14: It's usually not. Things get much worse before they get better,
- 24:54Speaker 14: so that sometimes just leave isn't really helpful. Absolutely need
- 25:01Speaker 14: to have a plan unless they're escaping in the moment.
- 25:06Speaker 14: This is a plan. You need to know where you're
- 25:08Speaker 14: gonna go that you have resources so many things.
- 25:13Speaker 5: Talking again with Julie Britain the Dave Alan Show on

- 25:25Speaker 5: of the podcast menu and Julie. Sometimes there can be
- 25:28Speaker 5: a stigma, Oh yeah, with the person that leaves. I mean,
- 25:32Speaker 5: because there's always in any kind of a domestic situation,
- 25:35Speaker 5: you know, he said, she said, you know, and one
- 25:38Speaker 5: person's got one story and one person's got another. But
- 25:40Speaker 5: there's always a stigma how could this person, how could
- 25:44Speaker 5: he or she just up and leave their home? And
- 25:47Speaker 5: as you said, victim victim shaming and things like that.
- 25:50Speaker 14: Yes, absolutely, I think it's important to remember that not
- 25:55Speaker 14: only does the perpetrator groom as victim, everyone around them,
- 26:01Speaker 14: you know, they're they're usually the great person that you
- 26:04Speaker 14: work with. It's super helpful, and that's on purpose. So
- 26:09Speaker 14: when it does come to light what's happened in the house,
- 26:12Speaker 14: it makes it so easy to question, like, oh, no,
- 26:16Speaker 14: I know them they're amazing. I used to work with them.
- 26:19Speaker 14: They were, you know, the best coworker ever had. Or
- 26:23Speaker 14: that's my uncle. He's always very sweet. You may have
- 26:29Speaker 14: that relationship with them, but you're not their partner, and
- 26:32Speaker 14: that's a totally different.
- 26:33Speaker 5: Nobody really what goes on behind closed down? Absolutely, and
- 26:37Speaker 5: you see the public image. And I also thought it
- 26:39Speaker 5: was interesting that you said it's not a class thing
- 26:41Speaker 5: and it's not a money thing talking to absolutely.
- 26:43Speaker 6: Not, no, no.
- 26:45Speaker 14: And I think that folks assume that just because someone
- 26:50Speaker 14: has access or their perpetrator has access to money, that
- 26:56Speaker 14: the victim also has that same access to money, and
- 26:59Speaker 14: that's usually not the case at all. There is so
- 27:02Speaker 14: much financial abuse of involved in all of this, and
- 27:05Speaker 14: I think when we really dig down to the bottom
- 27:08Speaker 14: of the why didn't she just leave? Many many times
- 27:13Speaker 14: it's financial and it's a matter of how am I
- 27:21Speaker 14: going to recreate this level of living for my kids?
- 27:26Speaker 14: And folks get shamed for that as well, like when
- 27:30Speaker 14: you leave. That's it's a tough space because yeah, there's
- 27:35Speaker 14: a lot to think about.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Let's talk about the rest of the month of October.
- 27:40Speaker 14: Yes goes, Oh my gosh, we have amazing things happening.
- 27:43Speaker 14: So one of the big things is Dave. I am
- 27:47Speaker 14: making my stage debut uh huh with the Contemporary Youth
- 27:54Speaker 14: Arts Company. It's a play called Why We Stayed, and
- 28:00Speaker 14: it's about the forgotten victims of domestic violence. It is
- 28:03Speaker 14: If people talk about wanting to support us, this is
- 28:07Speaker 14: the way to do it. There is no ticket price,
- 28:10Speaker 14: although we are asking for donations.
- 28:14Speaker 13: It is.
- 28:16Speaker 14: So amazing. It talks about domestic violence from so many
- 28:20Speaker 14: different perspectives, from the CPS worker to the nurse who
- 28:25Speaker 14: is seeing a victim again and again and again, to
- 28:29Speaker 14: law enforcement, kids in the house. And it's called Why
- 28:35Speaker 14: We Stayed. And it's at the Cyac Playhouse on the
- 28:43Speaker 14: West Side over in Elk City and it starts October tenth,
- 28:48Speaker 14: so it's the tenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth, and the twelfth
- 28:52Speaker 14: and the nineteenth. It's on our YWCA of Charleston facebook page.
- 28:57Speaker 14: I'd love for folks to come and see because we
- 29:00Speaker 14: often say you don't know what you don't know. But
- 29:02Speaker 14: these stories. Dan Katie is the playwright and they are
- 29:07Speaker 14: absolutely amazing. He met with some folks on the team
- 29:12Speaker 14: that I work with and developed these stories and they
- 29:16Speaker 14: are absolutely moving, and I thought, you know what, I
- 29:20Speaker 14: come each year that they've put this on. It was
- 29:23Speaker 14: part of festival last year, but this year I said,
- 29:27Speaker 14: you know what, let's put our money where well, let's
- 29:30Speaker 14: put our mouth where the money may be. And so
- 29:34Speaker 14: I have a very small role in this, but I
- 29:37Speaker 14: would love for folks to come and see what we
- 29:39Speaker 14: do there. We also have our at the end of
- 29:42Speaker 14: the month on the thirtieth or Honkin' Wave, where we
- 29:45Speaker 14: are crowning our Advocate of the Year and our Volunteers
- 29:50Speaker 14: of the Year. There are so many things we have
- 29:53Speaker 14: going on, partnerships with the West Side Health Right where
- 29:56Speaker 14: we're doing a panel discussion, and on the steps of
- 29:59Speaker 14: the Capital next week on the sixth, we are going
- 30:03Speaker 14: to have a shoe display for the victims of domestic violence,
- 30:10Speaker 14: so that will be incredibly moving. There is so much happening,
- 30:15Speaker 14: and folks can catch up with that on our Facebook page.
- 30:18Speaker 14: But we'd love to see you out. Everything is free
- 30:22Speaker 14: again the play we're asking for donations and I think
- 30:25Speaker 14: once you hear and see the stories, you know nothing's
- 30:32Speaker 14: too small At this point. You know, ten dollars we
- 30:36Speaker 14: take that and turn it into dog food for our
- 30:39Speaker 14: pets over at the refuge at Hope House. So we
- 30:43Speaker 14: just want people to know what we do and hear
- 30:46Speaker 14: all of those different perspectives.
- 30:47Speaker 5: I did want to mention that Aaron Parker has a
- 30:50Speaker 5: story this morning post at Wvventurenews dot com that purplepin
- 30:53Speaker 5: wheels are lined up outside the Knaw County Public Safety
- 30:57Speaker 5: Building to bring awareness and that to prevent domestic violence
- 31:01Speaker 5: in conjunction with this. Absolutely, we got a great story
- 31:05Speaker 5: on the website about that, some comments from Knaw County
- 31:07Speaker 5: Prosecutor Deb Rusnik and others on the website.
- 31:10Speaker 14: That's fabulous. And so those those are folks, the advocates
- 31:15Speaker 14: there with the Kanaw County Sheriff's Department and the Prosecutor's office,
- 31:20Speaker 14: they are amazing. They do amazing work and we couldn't
- 31:25Speaker 14: do what we do without them as well.
- 31:29Speaker 5: Where can people learn more about it? Because we've covered
- 31:31Speaker 5: a lot of ground today. Give me your social media websites.
- 31:34Speaker 5: What do you get?
- 31:34Speaker 14: Absolutely, we've got YWCA of Charleston dot org. That's the
- 31:38Speaker 14: website and our Facebook page and our Instagram. Why there
- 31:43Speaker 14: b be CA of Charleston, all of the informations on there,

- 36:20Speaker 5: The Kanawa County Sheriff's Department say. Witnesses tell them the

- 37:55Speaker 5: a third a third woman has filed suit against the
- 37:59Speaker 5: Kanawha County bailiff. You know the story by now. Fifty
- 38:03Speaker 5: four year old cast Close was arrested in late July
- 38:06Speaker 5: after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her while
- 38:09Speaker 5: she was in custody, and then came a second lawsuit
- 38:14Speaker 5: in August, followed by another woman. Similar story there to
- 38:18Speaker 5: the first woman's story, and now a third woman has
- 38:22Speaker 5: come forward in this case. Now you can read the
- 38:24Speaker 5: exact allegations as part of Aaron Parker's story this morning.
- 38:30Speaker 5: It's supposed to at wv metronews dot com. Now the
- 38:32Speaker 5: bailiff Close was previously arraigned and his bond was set
- 38:36Speaker 5: one hundred thousand dollars. He's still locked up at South
- 38:39Speaker 5: Central programming notes tomorrow. Oh, actually not to one today.
- 38:46Speaker 5: I'm to have it a hard time with things today.
- 38:48Speaker 5: Words words are hard, Ryan, They're hard. State School Board
- 38:52Speaker 5: President Paul Hardesty will be the first guest with Wilson
- 38:55Speaker 5: Meadows on talk Line today at ten oh six, and
- 38:58Speaker 5: after his comment yesterday at the state school Board meeting.
- 39:04Speaker 5: You may want to tune in today. I know you will.
- 39:07Speaker 5: And let me say this about Paul Hardesty. I have
- 39:09Speaker 5: known Paul Hardesty my entire life. He's a good Logan
- 39:12Speaker 5: County boy. He can be very vocal, mainly because he's
- 39:16Speaker 5: a very large man, large in stature as in height.
- 39:21Speaker 5: He gave a speech during the state school Board meeting
- 39:24Speaker 5: yesterday morning and basically says school choice which he believes
- 39:30Speaker 5: in which he did reiterate he believes in school choice.
- 39:35Speaker 5: He said the school choice issue, though, is leading to
- 39:38Speaker 5: lower enrollment and historic rounds of public school consolidation. We've
- 39:43Speaker 5: seen many of them, as you'd well know here in
- 39:46Speaker 5: Kennaw County. And he said the state has lost thirty
- 39:50Speaker 5: five thousand students from public education his words now quote
- 39:54Speaker 5: all in the name of school choice, end quote. And
- 39:59Speaker 5: here's that's what I read into it. And we had
- 40:01Speaker 5: Brad mcelhaney on the show yesterday talking about it again,
- 40:03Speaker 5: mister Hardesty himself. We'll be on talk Line first guest
- 40:06Speaker 5: at ten oh sixth to day. I'm reading into it
- 40:09Speaker 5: he's putting a lot of the blame for this on
- 40:11Speaker 5: the legislature of which he used to be a member
- 40:15Speaker 5: of the legislature. And you can talk about charter schools,
- 40:19Speaker 5: you can talk about scholarship, et cetera, et cetera. And
- 40:21Speaker 5: if you go to the website and you read Brad's story,
- 40:24Speaker 5: Brad's actually included some of the audio. It was a
- 40:26Speaker 5: very impassioned speech for mister Hardesty, the head of the
- 40:30Speaker 5: school board yesterday. And Paul Hardesty is somebody who's been
- 40:33Speaker 5: around public education for a long time. He's a past
- 40:36Speaker 5: board member, pass board president of Logan County Schools. And again,
- 40:39Speaker 5: he's got a, I guess, a unique perspective because he
- 40:42Speaker 5: was a legislator at one time too. He has been
- 40:44Speaker 5: an in and around state government a lot of different
- 40:47Speaker 5: things in his career. And we kind of got an
- 40:51Speaker 5: idea that at the state school board meeting yesterday that
- 40:55Speaker 5: it was going to be a little fiery, And I
- 40:57Speaker 5: mean when I say fiery, I mean just from the
- 40:59Speaker 5: words of Paul Hartes. He basically just had a monologue
- 41:01Speaker 5: there yesterday and he's going to be on with Meadows
- 41:05Speaker 5: and Wilson at on talk Line coming up at ten
- 41:08Speaker 5: oh six this oney, So I know you definitely do
- 41:11Speaker 5: not want to miss that. Go to Metronews dot com
- 41:14Speaker 5: and you can read the story and then tune in
- 41:17Speaker 5: to Paul Hardesty Live. Now, I will say this, there
- 41:20Speaker 5: are some people, as you may expect, that have been
- 41:22Speaker 5: critical of Paul Hardnessey. One of those frequent guests of
- 41:25Speaker 5: the program Jason Huffman from Americans for Prosperity, and we're
- 41:28Speaker 5: going to have him on some future programs to talk
- 41:30Speaker 5: about that as a matter of fact. And I am
- 41:33Speaker 5: told that he is actually calling for hartnessey resignation. So
- 41:38Speaker 5: don't I can tell you right now that's not gonna happen.

- 44:56Speaker 5: has been political, yet someone has to start running their
- 44:59Speaker 5: Trump painting trap about him. First thing, Donnie really is
- 45:04Speaker 5: living rent free in some people's heads. How pathetic. Get
- 45:07Speaker 5: a life, man, says a texture. And look, I have
- 45:10Speaker 5: said this before about the text of the show and
- 45:12Speaker 5: calls the show and so on and so forth. I
- 45:15Speaker 5: very rarely, I don't. I don't get upset about text
- 45:19Speaker 5: and some things them because people are giving their opinions. Man,
- 45:21Speaker 5: that's what it's all about. And and I appreciate the taking.
- 45:25Speaker 5: The ones I don't agree with, I appreciate. But but
- 45:27Speaker 5: it does seem that I will say this, and I
- 45:31Speaker 5: say this as not a Trump supporter. Okay, I voted
- 45:35Speaker 5: for the you know my story. I've told you before.
- 45:36Speaker 5: I voted for the guy twice, did not vote for him.
- 45:41Speaker 5: This past time because I thought he was dangerous to
- 45:44Speaker 5: the country. However, however, however, he's a president of the
- 45:47Speaker 5: United States and I respect the office, and so I
- 45:50Speaker 5: want I want President Trump to do well. And I
- 45:53Speaker 5: will say this too, I do think that Trump deringement.
- 45:57Speaker 5: I just made up a word. Derangement syndrome is a
- 45:59Speaker 5: real thing, I really really do. And it looks. Look,
- 46:03Speaker 5: the President gives us all calls every now and then
- 46:07Speaker 5: to shake our head with the things untruth social and
- 46:09Speaker 5: so on and so forth. But I do think that
- 46:11Speaker 5: sometimes I'm just just saying. I think sometimes people, what's
- 46:16Speaker 5: the current term, I think they need to go out
- 46:18Speaker 5: and touch a little grass every now and then. Not
- 46:21Speaker 5: that kind. Well that's what it takes to relax. Then
- 46:24Speaker 5: go ahead, I'm talking about the kind it's in your yard.
- 46:26Speaker 5: Just relax a little bit. And it doesn't always have
- 46:30Speaker 5: to be political. We don't always have to talk. I mean,
- 46:33Speaker 5: and it's not just here. I mean there are people
- 46:36Speaker 5: here in the Kanaw Valley that if you go to
- 46:38Speaker 5: any news source, whether it's our station, whether it's the
- 46:43Speaker 5: TV station's exect mail anything, every comment that they make
- 46:50Speaker 5: one person in particular, I mean, I see I don't
- 46:53Speaker 5: even know the person, but I see them all the time.
- 46:55Speaker 5: No matter what you're talking about. There's five comments that
- 46:57Speaker 5: are anti Trump. Afterwards it's a spelling be at, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 5: at an elementary school, but they comment with things about
- 47:05Speaker 5: Trump like, uh yeah, just just just thinking, you know,
- 47:10Speaker 5: just just just chill out a little bit, all right.
- 47:13Speaker 5: And that's kind of ironical. Speaking of words I make
- 47:17Speaker 5: up from time to time. There's a story behind ironical
- 47:19Speaker 5: why I use it. But anyway, and I'm going to
- 47:22Speaker 5: file this one Ryan, you'll appreciate this. Uh, I'm going
- 47:25Speaker 5: to file this in the things that only matter to
- 47:28Speaker 5: people like me. The old the older I get, the
- 47:34Speaker 5: more that certain things bother me. Now I don't let it,
- 47:39Speaker 5: I don't let it fester, but just occasionally it bothers me.
- 47:45Speaker 5: One of those is people, and I've talked about this
- 47:47Speaker 5: on the show before, posted on the social media, people
- 47:49Speaker 5: who talk on speaker phones or do FaceTime in public.
- 47:54Speaker 5: It's like I'm at Kroger, I'm just trying to get
- 47:57Speaker 5: to the green beans, man. But we have to have
- 48:00Speaker 5: someone who feels the need to broadcast everything on speakerphone
- 48:07Speaker 5: or it's not just great in public or whatever. I
- 48:11Speaker 5: told the story in a big social media rant about
- 48:14Speaker 5: a year or so ago that my wife had a
- 48:17Speaker 5: medical appointment and I had to drive her to set.
- 48:21Speaker 5: Appointment had to take off the show and I had
- 48:22Speaker 5: to drive her there. And we're in a waiting room
- 48:24Speaker 5: that's not even half the size of the studio I'm
- 48:26Speaker 5: setting in now, and some person in there felt the
- 48:29Speaker 5: need to talk on a speaker phone while they were
- 48:32Speaker 5: in there. I'm like, I just know this. If you
- 48:35Speaker 5: talk on a speakerphone or you're doing FaceTime around me,
- 48:39Speaker 5: I'm jumping in the conversation just so you know if
- 48:42Speaker 5: you're talking about so if you're talking trash about somebody,
- 48:44Speaker 5: I'm going to jump in and go, hey, you know,
- 48:46Speaker 5: you're right, you know, because if you do that around me,
- 48:49Speaker 5: that's what I'm going to do, just so you know.
- 48:51Speaker 5: But the thing I wanted to get to this morning,
- 48:53Speaker 5: and I don't know why these things bother me from
- 48:56Speaker 5: time to time, the un needed shortening of words. Yesterday
- 49:05Speaker 5: Metro News Hotline and I don't remember whether it was
- 49:09Speaker 5: Inner Out or Question of the Day, but it's one
- 49:11Speaker 5: of the things on X that the Weekly does. He
- 49:14Speaker 5: talked about this new menu item at Wendy's, and it's
- 49:19Speaker 5: kind of a Chicken Tenders kind of thing, and they're
- 49:23Speaker 5: calling them Tendy's because you know, tenders took way too
- 49:30Speaker 5: long to say or spell, apparently, And this is from
- 49:34Speaker 5: the same school of thought of referring to chicken nuggets
- 49:39Speaker 5: as nugs or God forbid nuggies. It absolutely drives me crazy.
- 49:49Speaker 5: And I don't know why, it just does. I can
- 49:55Speaker 5: give you a few more in the world of sports,
- 49:59Speaker 5: of which I'm a sports fanatic. Sorry, I don't have
- 50:03Speaker 5: better news about my Cincinnati Reds, but nobody thought we'd
- 50:05Speaker 5: make the playoffs anyway. ESPN says we have a selli
- 50:13Speaker 5: now instead of a celebration. Check out the selli. And
- 50:18Speaker 5: when do we do the selly, We do it after
- 50:21Speaker 5: the tutty meaning touchdown. Please stop. Oh and by the way,
- 50:30Speaker 5: perfect is now PERF family is now fam. And again,
- 50:37Speaker 5: it just drives old people like me crazy. And maybe
- 50:42Speaker 5: I should take the advice that I gave people that
- 50:45Speaker 5: text the show about Trump and it's just relaxed and
- 50:48Speaker 5: just go outside and touch a little touch a little
- 50:50Speaker 5: grass or something. Knock out a couple of texts here,
- 50:56Speaker 5: check said the only deranged people are people who voted
- 50:59Speaker 5: for Trump and his bleep show says A texture text.
- 51:04Speaker 4: Says uh Dave.
- 51:06Speaker 5: Our country is in a constitutional crisis. We're about to
- 51:09Speaker 5: lose all of our freedoms. We the people need to
- 51:11Speaker 5: stand tall. It's a texture tex says uh Dave. What
- 51:15Speaker 5: about these made up words like unalive?
- 51:17Speaker 7: What is that?
- 51:19Speaker 4: Dead?
- 51:19Speaker 5: Well, I can tell you unalive came from because and
- 51:23Speaker 5: when you use it as the first time I saw
- 51:25Speaker 5: unalive was used as a verb instead of kill because
- 51:30Speaker 5: Facebook and other social media sites are very very sensitive
- 51:33Speaker 5: about certain words, so it unalives me when people do that.
- 51:37Speaker 5: You can't stay kill on social media. DJ Meadows is here,
- 51:41Speaker 5: do I just need to just stop trying, stop trying
- 51:46Speaker 5: to be so perf I'm gonna get you going on
- 51:48Speaker 5: this one.
- 51:49Speaker 20: You know, for years, for years, we were worried that
- 51:52Speaker 20: foreigners would come here and they would totally kill the
- 51:56Speaker 20: English language. We would end up speaking I don't know,
- 51:59Speaker 20: some other languae. Trent doing a pretty good job from
- 52:02Speaker 20: what I can tell based on what you just shared,
- 52:04Speaker 20: of killing the language in and of ourselves.
- 52:06Speaker 5: A tutty instead of a touch tudy, a selly instead
- 52:09Speaker 5: of a celebration who comes up with this stuff?
- 52:13Speaker 20: Somebody, the kids, I mean, somebody's sitting around saying, hey,
- 52:16Speaker 20: that tested well, let's let's make it a tuddy man
- 52:19Speaker 20: a tutty stuff.
- 52:20Speaker 5: It's perf it's anyway.
- 52:22Speaker 20: I'm always scared when I hear this stuff because I
- 52:24Speaker 20: don't know what it means, and if I repeat it,
- 52:28Speaker 20: I may be saying something that I'm not supposed to say.
- 52:30Speaker 5: To be fair, we got to close to be fair.
- 52:33Speaker 5: This is really not something new. The Internet has kind
- 52:35Speaker 5: of taken it to another level. But uh, I mean,
- 52:37Speaker 5: somebody at one point had to stay bad meaning good,
- 52:40Speaker 5: you know, and that goes back generations. Give me a
- 52:41Speaker 5: TD all right, TEXTL says, excellent, cloud yelling day. That's
- 52:45Speaker 5: what I do, all right, I've already I've already previewed
